Notes: Photo from Indy 1991. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Chuck qualified #6 for the show and in the first round, beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.65/266.11. He picked up to a 5.55/260.34 in round two, but it wasn't enough as he lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.41/253. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #13 and lost in the first round. Things didn't look much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where his 5.55 qualified on the "bump" spot. But he got around low qualified Jim White and in round two his 10.66/71.63 advanced when Richard Hartman broke. In the semifinals, he ran 5.40/267.61, but lost to eventual winner Force's 5.32/270. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals where Chuck qualified #9. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. |

Notes: Raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. Confirmed 7.68 at OCIR Also 7.90/194.80 Low ET and Top Speed at OCIR Funny Car Championships. Dave was driving the "Beebe and Fedak" Top Fuel car until the end of July. On August 17, he showed up at Irwindale behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's "Super Chief" Dodge Charger FC. The race was between FC's and Fuel Altereds. In the first round, he ran an 8.21/186.72 that lost to Leon Fitzgerald's 8.11/184 in the "Pure Heaven." In the second round, he picked up to a winning 7.80/191.88 over a crossed up Gary Reed in the "Groundshaker." In the third race, he ran 8.32/190.66 that lost to Sush Matsubara's 7.78/192. It was obvious that the car could run. On August 31, he went to OCIR for a sixteen-car show. Dave set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 7.74/187.88 over Larry Barker's "Psycho" Mustang. In the semifinals, a 7.81/184.80 beat Gene Conway in the "Destroyer" Jeep at 8.27. Unfortunately, in the final, the transmission let go and Gas Ronda soloed for the victory. OCIR held a Fuel Altered vs. Funny Car race on September 21. Once again, Beebe was there. He beat Willie Borsch in the first round, with an 8.35/187.50. A second round 7.95/183.20 beat Matsubara's 8.09/197. And in round three, he made it a clean sweep by beating Fitzgerald's 8.17/189 with an 8.11/191.48. On October 5, OCIR held a 10 car round-robin race. Beebe won two of his three races with a best of 7.95/189.06 while beating Fred Goeske. |

Notes: Doug Thorley's Corvair is one of the best-remembered funny cars of the Sixties. It was known both for its performance and its looks. The Corvair replaced his "Chevy 2 Much" '65 Chevy II. The new Pat Foster, Ron Scrima-built piece had tinted Plexiglas windows, a lace paint job, and gold painted Halibrand mags. The car was the poster child of late Sixties fads. Thorley had one of the great weekends of his career at Indy '67. The Doug's Headers Corvair ran 7.693 to win the race over several Hemi-powered machines. He also set Top Speed at 192.30. The 7.69 run and Indy win were the high point of Thorley's funny driving career. The notoriety from the win led to Thorley getting a deal with American Motors to build a rear-engine funny car, but the AMC machines never reached the success of the Chevy. | On August 6/1967, Doug Thorley and his supercharged Corvair ran the quickest pass to date by a Funny Car, a 7.86/184 mph. That day at Lions, he also backed it up with a superb 7.91. At the Indy Nationals of that year, he also ran a nice 7.83, winning the race as well. - BS | Components: 490 cubes (stroked 427 Chev), GMC 6/71 blower, Enderle "bug catcher" injection, Art Carr TorqueFlite-9" Ford rear with 3.90 cogs, exhibition Engineering (Pat Foster and Ron Scrima) chassis, coil-over shocks. He was featured in 9/67 Car Craft. - RT | Doug debuted this car at Irwindale on May 20. On its maiden run, it ran 8.50/172. Thorley was back at Irwindale on May 27 for a best-of-three-match race against Gas Ronda's SOHC Mustang. His car had nothing but problems, and Doug lost three straight. His ailing 12.17 lost to Ronda's 8.72 in their first race. A slightly better 11.01/136.98, lost to the Mustang's 8.67/165 in the second race. And Doug shut the car off early in their last race giving Ronda three straight wins. Doug was at Fremont on June 26 for a best of three match race against Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-'Cuda." Thorley had a lot of problems on this day. Doug broke a couple of valves in their first race and lost to Fred's 8.65/185. Doug could not run after that, and Goeske made a solo run for the match race win. Also ran 191.89 at Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67. |

Notes: At the second NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater in May, Dick qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.25/230.76 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, he broke in the first round, advancing Tom Motry. Rosberg attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.29/227.84 failed to make the show. On July 20, the "Fighting Irish" team was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.11 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Raymond Beadle's 6.02 in the "Blue Max." Rosberg beat Dale Armstrong in the first round, and in the semifinals he beat John Pott in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the finals he ran Billy Meyer and both ran 6.12 (Rosberg at 230.17) with Billy getting the win. Dick qualified #3 at the 1980 AHRA GrandNationals, Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio, but redlighted to John Collins in round one. He was at the PHR Championships where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.27/228.42, but his 6.53 in the first round, lost to Tom Hoover's 6.25. He made it into the final at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. There he qualified #2 with a 6.17/241.95 (Top Speed) and then ran 6.19 over Roy Harris' 6.40. A semifinal 6.20/239.17 beat John Speelman's 6.42/224. In the final he faced Gary Burgin and Dick ran his worst pass on the day, a 6.28/239.36 that lost to Burgin's 6.26/237. |

Notes: Kenny's first year with Budweiser sponsorship. He crashed the brand new car at the press conference. Kenny started the '80 season with a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme at the OCIR Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #2 with a 6.06/233.16. He lost to Dale Pulde when he hit the guardrail in the first round. He got out of shape, crossed the centerline, and hit the rail. He was OK, but the Arrow body was wrecked. Bernstein went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the finals. A 6.06 qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but he slept in the first round, and his 6.18/232.55 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.24/229. A week later (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He was at Rockingham on April 20 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.12/228 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. In his first-round race against Billy Meyer, Bernstein accidentally shirted back into low gear, and he lost to Meyer's 6.15. The following week, he qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, running 6.11/241.93 for the spot. It was an eight-car show, and by qualifying #5, it set up a first-round race with low qualifier Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting" Firebird. Paul won the race when Bernstein smoked the tires and shut off. On May 4, he was runner-up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the rain-delayed IHRA Dixie Nationals. At Bristol for another rain-delayed event, the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.21. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.59 lost to eventual winner Meyer's 6.44. The "Budweiser King" wasn't running that well at the NHRA Springnationals, only qualifying #10 with a 6.22/232.55. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He also lost in the first round at the next NHRA race, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Kenny qualified #7 in the eight-car show, but his 6.57/225.00 in the first round lost to Beadle's 6.29/226. He then went to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.33 qualified #5, setting up a first-round encounter with low qualifier Prudhomme. It was a close race, but the "Snake's" 6.19 beat Kenny's 6.20. He won the NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney, beating John Speelman in the final with a 6.43/233.16 (Top Speed and a new track record). He earlier had set Low ET at 6.37. At Englishtown, he qualified poorly, only running 6.14/237.46 for the #11 spot, and in the first round, he lost to Prudhomme. Early in August, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.52, but in round one, he smoked the tires to a shut-off 12.40 that lost to Roy Harris' 6.30/236. Kenny was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division 1 race. He ran well, making it into the final against future crew chief Dale Armstrong, but he had problems and shut off, giving Dale's 6.20/231 the victory. Kenny was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, where his 6.15 best failed to qualify for the race that had a 6.10 "bump." Ray Alley then came on board to help with the car for the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle. Kenny was the first to tell you that Alley "knew his stuff" as the car responded by running a career-best 6.002 at 239.36 to qualify low for the field. However, things didn't go so rosy in eliminations, as Bernstein's 6.61/214.28 in the first round lost to Armstrong's 6.62/180. Kenny wrapped up the year at the NHRA Finals in Ontario. He qualified #13 at 6.251/224.90 (243.90?) and bat Dale Pulde in round one, 6.585/220.04 to 6.79/207. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Ron Colson, 6.21/233 to 6.304/227.84. |

Notes: Won 1980 Cajuns over Paul Smith. | Meyer qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/233.32, but failed to make the finals. Baton Rouge hosted the Division 4 Opener on March 9 and there finished runner-up to Raymond Beadle in a close 6.24/233 to 6.27/230.17 final. The following week (March 16) at Gainesville for the Gatornationals he qualified #6 with a 6.09, but crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He was runner-up again in April at the Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins when he broke in the final after setting Low ET at 6.21. At the fifth annual Cajun Nationals, Billy qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.08. He beat Henry Harrison in the first round, with a 6.51/227 and in the semifinal a 6.32/226 beat Tripp Shumake. In the final he beat Paul Smith with a 6.66/215.31 for the victory. Meyer continued to run well, posting another victory on May 18 at Bristol in the IHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #5 and met low qualifier Beadle in the first round. A 6.13/239.36 (Top Speed), dispatched the "Blue Max's" smoky run. In the semifinals, a 6.44 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.59. In the final, he met and beat Roy Harris' 6.53/226 with a 6.20/234.37. Things looked good for Billy heading into the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. A 6.18/226.70 qualified #5 and a first-round 6.09 beat Bob Pickett. In the second round, he got a single when Don Prudhomme was shut off with an oil leak on the line. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, Meyer's reverser locked up after his burnout, and he could only watch as Beadle singled into the final. He qualified #1 with a 6.23/238.09 (Top Speed) at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first-round 6.35/225.56 beat Roy Harris's 6.66/198. In the semifinal, Beadle's 6.20/231 beat his 6.29/201.79. The Summernationals at Englishtown was the next national event on the NHRA schedule and Meyer qualified #4 with a 6.043. He made his way to the final to meet with Prudhomme. In the final an off pace 6.58/192.71 gave him a runner-up spot to Don's 6.10/238. A week later (July 20), he was back in the winner's circle at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern National. At first things didn't look so good when he only qualified #7 in the eight-car field. But he beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a surprisingly strong Len Imbrogno in the semifinals before meeting Dick Rosberg in the final. His final round 6.12/227.27 beat Rosberg's right there 6.12/230. He was back at Bristol on August 3 for the IHRA Summernationals and hoping for a sweep at Bristol after winning the Springnationals earlier in the year. Billy qualified #1 with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 221.67. He beat Al Baldwin in the first round, with a 6.26/224.43 and a 6.21/231.95 in the semis took out Roy Harris. In the final, a 6.65/227.27 was a tenth off of Paul Smith's winning 6.55/221 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He was the first alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.36/218.97, but when Tom Motry crashed in qualifying, Billy got in as an alternate. He showed what he could do by setting Low ET of the first-round with a 6.12 that beat Harris' 6.26, but in the semifinals, his reverser broke after his burnout, giving Gary Burgin a solo into the final. On August 17, Meyer got another runner-up finish at the Division 3 race at Beech Bend. A first-round 6.26/235.60 beat Ron Colson's quicker 6.17/236 in the "Hawaiian." In the semifinals, his 6.14/204.54 beat Beadle's 6.20/235 to move into the finals against Dale Armstrong. Meyer ran a strong 6.20/238.72 (Top Speed), but finished second best to Armstrong's 6.16/236. Meyer skipped running the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.044/236.84 and in round one, his 6.13/229.00 beat Armstrong's 6.39/220. In round two, a 6.18/234.37 got around Prudhomme's 6.27/226. In the semifinals, a tire shaking 6.46/188 lost to upstart Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow at 6.12/236. He continued to run well in IHRA competition as well, qualifying #1 with a 6.12/217.91 at Rockingham for the US Open. Dale Pulde did beat him in the first round, however and Meyer went on to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.21 qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal when Beadle beat him with a 6.01. The same song and dance happened at the season ending NHRA World Finals when Meyer was beaten again by Beadle in the semifinals, this time Raymond's 6.11 beat Meyer's off pace 6.88. In NHRA's season long points chase, Meyer finished second to Beadle. - RH |

Notes: Kosty started the '80 season strong. At the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.050/240.64. He beat Tom Ridings and Gordie Bonin in the first two rounds before getting out of shape in the semifinals and running a 7.21 that lost to Ron Colson's 6.34 in the "Hawaiian." In March, he won the Englishtown FC opener by beating Roy Harris in the final with a 6.08. In April, he won the Spring Funny Car Bonanza at Englishtown. It was an eight-car show, and his first-round 6.35/229.00 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.84/204. In the semifinals, his 6.25/233.76 beat Stan Bowman's 6.82/214. In the final, he ran Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" Mustang that had set Low ET and Top Speed. They both smoked the tires, and Ivanof's 7.76/223.32 got the victory. Kosty was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round of competition. He ran 6.11/240.00 to qualify #9 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max."Beadle's 6.14/241 sent Kosty's 6.29/236.22 packing for home. The final NHRA Division One race was held in New England on August 17, and Ivanof qualified #6 with a 6.23/217.39. In the first round, an off-pace 6.51/205.01 lost to Rick Johnson's 6.16/232. He was back at Englishtown shortly after that for the US All-Pro Championships. It was an eight-car show, and Kosty's 6.61/210.77 in the first round lost to Harris' 6.19/200. He won his fourth Englishtown race of the season at its FC final in October. He made runs of 6.51 and 6.38 to make the final. In the final, his 6.43/232.55 stopped Al Hofmann. Where did Kosty run 241.93? |

Notes: Roy started the '80 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/240.64. He beat Doc Halladay in the first round, with a 6.13. In the second round, he lost to Kenny Bernstein. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Roy qualified well with a 6.12, but he lost in the first round. He continued to run well at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he ran 6.14 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. Roy ran a good 6.19/231.95 in that race, but he lost to the "Snake's" even better 6.12/235. Roy won the Spring All-Pro race at Maple Grove in May over an eight-car field. In the first round, R.C. Sherman lost fire against him and his 6.35/230.76 advanced. In the semifinals, he set Low ET and a new track speed record with a 6.12/241.93 that beat Al Bergler's 6.41/219. The final saw a 6.41/229.59 wrap up the win over Bob Seifert's 6.53/200. At the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 4, Roy qualified #2 with a 6.14/241.28 (Top Speed) in his Arrow. In the first round, he lost to Al Hofmann when he crossed the centerline. He was runner-up to Dale Pulde at the Jungle Jim Memorial race at Maple Grove. He won his first-round race over Bruce Larson with a strong 6.13/233.76 (Low ET and Top Speed). On May 18, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #4 in the eight-car show. He beat Paul Smith's 6.37 in the first round, with a 6.30 and in the semifinals, a 6.44 advanced when Rick Johnson broke in the "Custom Body" Mustang. In the final, he met up with Billy Meyer and Roy's off pace 6.53/226.12 had to settle for the runner-up spot against Billy's 6.20/234. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals in June, Harris qualified on the "bump" with a 6.27/236.22. He lost to Tom Hoover in the first round. In the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he qualified #5 with a 6.36. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.66/198.67 lost to Meyer's 6.35/225. He was not among the qualifiers at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and the following week (July 20), his 6.32 best failed to qualify at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Things went better at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals where Harris qualified #3 with a 6.37/236.84. An opening round 6.30/236.84 (Top Speed) beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein, but in the semifinals he went up in smoke and shut off to 14.40 in a loss to Meyer's 6.21. At Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, Roy qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.26/228.42. But another 6.26 in the first round, lost to Meyer's 6.12. The following week (August 17), he was at New England for the NHRA Division 1 final. Once again, he qualified #4 with a 6.19/236.84. He was upset in the first round, when John Speelman picked up to 6.30/223 to beat his 6.36/231.95. At the end of August he debuted a new Omni. |

Notes: Mike debuted the Camaro at Oklahoma City Raceway in April. He was supposed to run against John Wiebe's Top Fuel car with a one-second handicap, but the cars were only allowed solo passes due to high winds. Burkhart ran a best of 8.37/184.00. Mike was at Green Valley Raceway in June for an eight-car show. He made an easy solo in the first round of the competition when Al Vanderwoude failed to fire, and in the semifinals, his 8.05/166.66 advanced when Charlie Therwhanger fouled. The final was supposed to be between him and Gene Snow, but rain canceled it. He was back at Green Valley on August 7 for an eight-car show. Mike set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, where he ran 7.89/189.92 to beat the "Bear-A-Cuda." But in the semifinal, the Camaro got out of shape, and Burkhart shut off against eventual winner Ronnie Runyan. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the AHRA All-American Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.86/175 defeated Bob Fulp's 8.36/175 in the "Limefire." He was late off the line in the second round, and his 8.06/180.36 lost to Runyan's 8.25/169. Confirmed 7.86 at 180.36 at 1968 Bristol All American Funny Car Championships and 7.81 Irwindale. Had real doors. Ran as an alternate at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 16th at 5.18/295.76 but had the misfortune of running against John Force in round one. Would eventually be the sixth member of the Castrol Four Second Club (October 26/1996) with a 4.932 at Pomona Calif. | Richard Hartman had the only Chevy-bodied car to qualify in Funny Car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.51/218.49 got him the #15 spot in the field. He shocked Tony Pedregon in the opening round when his 5.04/297.42 beat the #2 qualifier's 5.11/300. Tony was so surprised that he thought his car had broken the way Richard had pulled away. But in round two, Hartman lost to Gary Clapshaw in a Camaro versus Mustang run. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Richard's 5.15/293.82 qualified #3. But this time, it was he who was upset in the first round. Gary Bolger, who qualified #14, stepped up to 5.24 to eliminate him in the opening round. Hartman continued to qualify strongly at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 5.08/293.73 qualified #2 behind Al Hofmann's 5.06/287. He had a close first-round race that saw his 5.11/282.57 beat Tim Wilkerson's 5.14/275. But in round two, an off-pace 5.54/221.02 lost to Del Worsham's 5.41/215. It was then off to Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 5.13/288.83 qualified #5. But he lost to Tony Pedregon in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Richard ran 4.932/304.05 to lead qualifying at the NHRA World Finals. Unfortunately, he lost to Ray Higley in round one, when he shut off to a 12-second pass. |

Notes: Kenji qualified second at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.02/292.58 followed Cruz Pedregon's 5.01/297. In the first round, his 5.23/273.39 beat John Force's 5.26/287. Del Worsham broke against him in round two, and Okazaki lost his second engine of the weekend with a 5.94/179.39. He lost to eventual winner K.C. Spurlock's 5.40/260. He qualified #8 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.15/275.48. He improved to 5.05/297.42 in the opening round to beat Gary Bolger's 5.33/282. Notes: Jungle Jim had a great 1976 season. He started in Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Jim was running the Monza, and a 6.44/224.67 qualified #1. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.78 lost to Shirl Greer's 6.69. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he was the second alternate with a 6.370/227.27 best. Jim ran really well at the Bakersfield March Meet, winning the event. An opening round 6.38/219 beat Tom McEwen, and in the semifinals, his 6.42/208 beat Jim Dunn. He beat Gordie Bonin in the final. Shortly after that, Jim was at OCIR for its Fox Hunt race. He qualified with a 6.63 and lasted until the second round before losing to Chris Lane. Jim ran 6.19 twice (at 233.16) at Fremont WCS in March en route to a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim led the field with a 6.04, followed by Tom Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Tom Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Later in April, Jim was at Kansas City International for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. There, he lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.26 beat his 6.55. Another victory came at the Dutch Classic held in May at Maple Grove. A final round 6.30/226.13 (track record speed) beat Dodger Glenn. Earlier, Jim had reset the track ET record to 6.29. At Atco Dragway for the CAR'S Magazine Championships, he lost to Pete Hill's 6.82/209 with an off-pace 7.56/197.36 in the first round. Jim qualified #5 at the NHRA Summernationals at 6.412/226.70. He lost in the first round to Gene Snow via redlight. That was Jim's last NHRA national event for the year. He also ran 6.21/229.59 at another Englishtown event. Jim ran 6.24/222.22 at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet late in the year. The times at Green Valley were widely disputed in the sport, but they came up on the boards. After Tom Prock's 5.974 in March at the second series event, NHRA intervened and demanded that none of the Green Valley five-second runs counted toward the Cragar Five-Second Club. Notes: Hoover had his new Monza at Martin, Michigan, in mid-August for the PHR Championships. Twenty-one cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field, and his 6.34 qualified #3. He improved to 6.31/222.77 in the opening round to beat Jake Crimmins, but an even better 6.26/229 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.24/219. He also qualified #9 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.176/228.42. His 6.206/223.32 in the first round lost to low qualifier Prudhomme's 6.056/234.37. Tom qualified #7 at Seattle at 6.286/227.27. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, 6.38/220.58 to 6.70/178.92. In round two, he did not start, sending Dave Uyehara on to a 19-second win. At the World Finals in Ontario, Tom qualified #15 at 6.44/221.13. He lost to Bob Pickett in round one, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42. |

Notes: Pat drove the car at the Fallnationals and the World Finals. He ran 6.274/234.98 at Seattle to qualify #6 (setting Top Speed). In round one, he beat Tripp Shumake, 6.72 to 7.16 (speeds unavailable). In round two, Mike Miller broke on the line, sending Pat forward, but he fouled against Ed McCulloch in the semis, tossing out a 7.63/79 as the Ace motored to a 12-second win. Pat ran 6.244/230.17 for the #4 slot at the World Finals. He beat a broken Raymond Beadle in round one, with a shutoff 8.31/100. In round two, he beat Rick Johnson, 6.396/224.42 to 6.44/228. He had a heartbreaking loss in the semis. McCulloch broke on the line, but Pat crossed the centerline in taking his single and was disqualified. That reinstated McCulloch, who broke again in the final, giving Don Prudhomme the win. We need to confirm the 6.21. |

Notes: Al didn't start the season the way he would have liked as he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.98/239.36 but lost to John Force in the first round. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and Al qualified #1 with a 5.95 (Low ET) at 237.46. A 6.03/233 in the first round, beat Ron Correnti, and he got past the semifinals to meet Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car for the title. Al got the victory. He was back in Atlanta on April 17 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Segrini qualified #7 with a 5.96/243.90. He made his way into the final by beating Tom McEwen and John Lombardo. There he was to face Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Al ran a good 6.07/214.28, but he lost to Hawley's better 5.99/240. The next NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals held at Baton Rouge. It was another eight-car show, and Al ran 6.04/238.84 to qualify #6. An opening round 6.07/240.00 took out McEwen's 6.11/234, and in the semifinal, a 6.00/241.28 stopped Kenny Bernstein at 6.26/226. He went up against Oswald in the final, and Segrini had things in hand as his 6.11/243.90 got the victory over Mark's 6.17/241. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, the car broke on his burnout in the first round, giving his opponent, Raymond Beadle, in the "Blue Max," a free ride into the semifinal. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.97/239.36 qualified #5. In round one, Al's 6.03/241.28 beat Lombardo's 6.10/236. But he had trouble in round two and shut down against eventual winner Beadle. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Hawley, who ran a controversial 5.71. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Segrini qualified #5 there with a 5.94/246.57. In round one, he ran 5.96/247.93 to beat Dale Pulde's 6.16, but a 6.11/243 in round two lost to Oswald's 5.92/249. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His first-round 5.91/234.98 beat Dominic Santucci, but he was shut off on the line in round two with an oil leak. That advanced Prudhomme to the semifinals with a solo. The best times were 5.870 at the World Finals and 250.69 at Indy. |

Notes: Lived up to the Corvette Curse, but set Top Speed at OCIR. On December 6, Pat drove this car to a 7.46/204.08 (Top Speed) at OCIR in qualifying fourth in an eight-car field. He advanced past the first-round with an 8.92 single when Frank Pisano had a rod go through the side of the block on his burnout and shut down. He advanced again with a solo in the semifinal when Gene Conway broke on the line. In the final, he had problems and a 10.14/110.70 was no match for Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian at 7.34/200. |

Notes: This is the second car of 1969, the mini Charger. After crashing the car at the Winternationals, Roland Leong had Logghe build a new Charger, and he debuted on May 24 at an eight-car show at Lions. The car was still a little too new, and his best of 7.90 failed to qualify. On May 30, Reyes was at Irwindale for another eight-car show, but the team had the "bugs" worked out this time. He set Low ET at 7.47 but lost his first-round race when Mike Van Sant's 7.55/196 in the Invader beat his 7.65/184.80. But Reyes got back in with the break rule in effect when Johnny Wright, who won his first-round race, broke and couldn't return for the semifinal. The Hawaiian had the lowest ET of the first-round losers, so the team was brought back into the show to race Mike Van Sant again, only this time in the semis. The Invader lost fire on the line, and Reyes advanced to the finals, where he ran a 7.64/184.80 to win over Ron Leslie. The next day (May 31), he raced at OCIR for the Funny Car 500. A 7.40/200.06 qualified #1, and a better 7.38 (Low ET) at 199.55 got past the first-round, and another 7.38/199.11 beat Gordon Mineo in the second round. Larry got a free ride into the final when Manuel Herrera blew his motor on the line. In the final, a 7.63/200.07 (Top Speed) beat Randy Walls for another win. Larry was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for a best-of-three-match race against Charlie Allen on July 12. Things didn't go well for Reyes on this day as his 7.78/182.54 lost the first race to Allen's 7.68/185. In the second race, the big Charger was shut off on the line with an oil leak, and Allen soloed with an 8.49 for the match race victory. On July 20, the "Hawaiian" was at Suffolk for a best of three against Della Woods and her "Funny Honey" Charger. A 7.65/181.44 beat her 7.97/178 in the first race, and in the second race, Della's car lost a rear end, and Larry's 8.36/137.82 won the match. Reyes made a third run of 7.86/158.45. On October 11, the "Hawaiian" was at Irwindale for a best of three match race against the Fuel altered of Sush Matsubara. Reyes won the match by winning the first two races with a 7.53/190.26, beating Sush's 7.78/194 in the first race, and his 7.72/176.81 beat the out of shape roadster in the second race. Matsubara did win the last race with a 7.78/194 when the Charger lost a transmission. Larry finished the year by winning on December 14 at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified second with a 7.45 but improved to a 7.38/193.96 in the first round, over Johnny Wright's 7.59/179. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.27/199.10 over Ray Alley's 7.74/194. In the final, a 7.35/199.54 beat Dave Beebe. By the end of the season, Reyes had racked up an 80% win record for '69. |

Notes: One of the brightest, prettiest cars ever painted. Rob was at Bandimere on June 25 for the NHRA Division 5 race. He set Low ET at 6.31 and went on to win, running 6.35/231.95 (Top Speed) to beat Garth Widdison's 6.59/210 in the final. The best NHRA national event times were 6.328/230.76 at the Mile Highs. The team did not follow the Western tour in 1982. | Won NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley, TX, over Dale Pulde in the War Eagle, 6.36/222.22 to 6.51/155. National Dragster indicated it was a brand-new car and that he almost lost it on an early qualifying pass but gathered it up and returned to win the event. | I have 5.92/248 in '82. Sorry, don't have locations. - Curt Swartz |

Notes: John started the year at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23. In the first round, he lost a supercharger, and his 6.00/200.89 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.99/238. He qualified #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.73/256.41. A first-round 5.76/253 beat Jody Smart, but another 5.76/258 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.74/252 in round two. | At the Sacramento Raceway Winter Classic 4 Car Funny Car show, Force ran 5.69/247.94 in Round 1 & the Low ET 5.65/244.57 in Round 2 & then was the Runner Up to Rick Johnson where Force ran a 5.81/245.91 losing effort to Johnson's 5.72/254.24. | He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76. He lasted until round two when a spark plug blew out of the cylinder, and he had to shut off, giving Dale Pulde a solo into the semifinals. At the Gatornationals, John again qualified #3, this time with a 5.71/254.66. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.55/204.26 loss to Prudhomme's 5.78/251. John won the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza over Paul Smith in the Custom Body car, 6.29/229.88 to a tractionless 7.36/125.87. National Dragster indicated that "Force was batting about .735 at Raceway Park and had an impressive big-buck operation with the Coke-backed 'Vette." Force ran a 5.85/254.09 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals to qualify #5. A 6.01/251.25 in the first round, lost to Smart's 5.95/224. His next stop was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. He made it into the final against Tom Hoover but was forced to shut off on the line with a water leak. On May 19, he was at Alamo Dragway for an eight-car show. John ran 5.91/237.46 to qualify first and then beat Doc Halladay in the first round with a 5.90/240.64. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.84/250.69 take and took out Johnny West. In the final, he met up with Ron Correnti driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo. John made his worst run of the meet, a 6.00/236.22, but it was enough to beat Ron's off-pace 6.45/191. His speed of 250 was the Top Speed of the meet, beating out eight Top Fuel dragsters, including Dick LaHaie and Chris Karamesines. He got a semifinal finish at the Cajun Nationals after qualifying #4 with a 5.85/241.54. He beat John Lombardo in the "Blue Max" with a 5.97/240.58 in the first round, and a 5.97/244 beat Rick Johnson in round two. But he smoked the tires in the semis and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #3, but he lost early. A 5.75/245.76 qualified #2 at National Trail for the Springnationals. He beat Mark Oswald in round one with a 5.89/247.38 but fell victim to tire smoke in round two, and his 6.29/223.32 was lost to Billy Meyer's 5.81/242. He ran at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Meet in June but had an oil pump break in the first round against Joe Amato's Mustang. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car show at the Grandnationals in Canada, so Force didn't push it in qualifying, running a 6.02/239.36 for the last spot in the field. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.50/179.49 and lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/246 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Summernationals, John qualified #3 with a 5.708/257.28. He beat Prudhomme and Jim Head in the first two rounds before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Bernstein. Kenny went to Denver for NHRA's next event, the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.84/233.16. He beat John Collins in the first round with a 5.88/235.60, and in round two, his 5.95/243.24 beat Meyer's 5.99/222. This put him up against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. Dale had been running well, hitting 5.83 in his second-round win, so crew chief Austin Coil dialed in a little too much power for their race, and Force smoked the tires while Pulde ran another 5.83 to advance into the final. John skipped the NHRA Northstar Nationals but was back on tour for the US Nationals at Indy. Before the big race, he was one of the eight qualifiers for the Big Bud Shootout. Unfortunately, he was paired against Bernstein in his first-round race, and Kenny's 5.69 beat John's 5.78. The following day, John ran a strong 5.705/255.24 for the actual race to qualify #3. The field was tough, as attested by his first-round win. Force cut a good light, and his 5.83/253.52 held off Graeme Cowin's better 5.81/253. Head had problems and shut off in the second round, while John advanced with a 5.79/246.30. He and Pulde had a good race in the semifinals, but Dale's 5.79/249 outmuscled John's close 5.82/257.58. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He lost a blower on a 5.72/232.55 pass on his last qualifying attempt. The time was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. He earlier had run 240.51. A first-round 5.97/230.88 advanced when Roy Harris lost fire. But in round two, his ailing 6.03/198.35 lost to Pulde's 5.72/246. He went to Englishtown for the following week (September 15) for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final of the ten-car show. Force qualified for the final with a 5.89, and Bruce Larson made the other half of the final with a 5.85. John won with a 5.91/248.56 (Top Speed) over Larson's 6.06/210. John also ran 5.825/243 in winning the ADRL Kansas City International Raceway event in 8/85. John's best NHRA ET was 5.705 at Indy. Did John run 5.65 somewhere this year (ADRA or IHRA)? 1985 ADRA Champion. Confirmed 5.89/245.23, 5.89/248.61, and 5.87/252.10 in winning ADRA Spokane. The best NHRA national event times were 5.705 at Indy and 258.17 at Pomona. |

Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3.
