Notes: John started the year at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23. In the first round, he lost a supercharger, and his 6.00/200.89 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.99/238. He qualified #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.73/256.41. A first-round 5.76/253 beat Jody Smart, but another 5.76/258 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.74/252 in round two. | At the Sacramento Raceway Winter Classic 4 Car Funny Car show, Force ran 5.69/247.94 in Round 1 & the Low ET 5.65/244.57 in Round 2 & then was the Runner Up to Rick Johnson where Force ran a 5.81/245.91 losing effort to Johnson's 5.72/254.24. | He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76. He lasted until round two when a spark plug blew out of the cylinder, and he had to shut off, giving Dale Pulde a solo into the semifinals. At the Gatornationals, John again qualified #3, this time with a 5.71/254.66. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.55/204.26 loss to Prudhomme's 5.78/251. John won the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza over Paul Smith in the Custom Body car, 6.29/229.88 to a tractionless 7.36/125.87. National Dragster indicated that "Force was batting about .735 at Raceway Park and had an impressive big-buck operation with the Coke-backed 'Vette." Force ran a 5.85/254.09 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals to qualify #5. A 6.01/251.25 in the first round, lost to Smart's 5.95/224. His next stop was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. He made it into the final against Tom Hoover but was forced to shut off on the line with a water leak. On May 19, he was at Alamo Dragway for an eight-car show. John ran 5.91/237.46 to qualify first and then beat Doc Halladay in the first round with a 5.90/240.64. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.84/250.69 take and took out Johnny West. In the final, he met up with Ron Correnti driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo. John made his worst run of the meet, a 6.00/236.22, but it was enough to beat Ron's off-pace 6.45/191. His speed of 250 was the Top Speed of the meet, beating out eight Top Fuel dragsters, including Dick LaHaie and Chris Karamesines. He got a semifinal finish at the Cajun Nationals after qualifying #4 with a 5.85/241.54. He beat John Lombardo in the "Blue Max" with a 5.97/240.58 in the first round, and a 5.97/244 beat Rick Johnson in round two. But he smoked the tires in the semis and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #3, but he lost early. A 5.75/245.76 qualified #2 at National Trail for the Springnationals. He beat Mark Oswald in round one with a 5.89/247.38 but fell victim to tire smoke in round two, and his 6.29/223.32 was lost to Billy Meyer's 5.81/242. He ran at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Meet in June but had an oil pump break in the first round against Joe Amato's Mustang. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car show at the Grandnationals in Canada, so Force didn't push it in qualifying, running a 6.02/239.36 for the last spot in the field. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.50/179.49 and lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/246 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Summernationals, John qualified #3 with a 5.708/257.28. He beat Prudhomme and Jim Head in the first two rounds before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Bernstein. Kenny went to Denver for NHRA's next event, the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.84/233.16. He beat John Collins in the first round with a 5.88/235.60, and in round two, his 5.95/243.24 beat Meyer's 5.99/222. This put him up against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. Dale had been running well, hitting 5.83 in his second-round win, so crew chief Austin Coil dialed in a little too much power for their race, and Force smoked the tires while Pulde ran another 5.83 to advance into the final. John skipped the NHRA Northstar Nationals but was back on tour for the US Nationals at Indy. Before the big race, he was one of the eight qualifiers for the Big Bud Shootout. Unfortunately, he was paired against Bernstein in his first-round race, and Kenny's 5.69 beat John's 5.78. The following day, John ran a strong 5.705/255.24 for the actual race to qualify #3. The field was tough, as attested by his first-round win. Force cut a good light, and his 5.83/253.52 held off Graeme Cowin's better 5.81/253. Head had problems and shut off in the second round, while John advanced with a 5.79/246.30. He and Pulde had a good race in the semifinals, but Dale's 5.79/249 outmuscled John's close 5.82/257.58. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He lost a blower on a 5.72/232.55 pass on his last qualifying attempt. The time was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. He earlier had run 240.51. A first-round 5.97/230.88 advanced when Roy Harris lost fire. But in round two, his ailing 6.03/198.35 lost to Pulde's 5.72/246. He went to Englishtown for the following week (September 15) for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final of the ten-car show. Force qualified for the final with a 5.89, and Bruce Larson made the other half of the final with a 5.85. John won with a 5.91/248.56 (Top Speed) over Larson's 6.06/210. John also ran 5.825/243 in winning the ADRL Kansas City International Raceway event in 8/85. John's best NHRA ET was 5.705 at Indy. Did John run 5.65 somewhere this year (ADRA or IHRA)? 1985 ADRA Champion. Confirmed 5.89/245.23, 5.89/248.61, and 5.87/252.10 in winning ADRA Spokane. The best NHRA national event times were 5.705 at Indy and 258.17 at Pomona. |

Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3. In the first round, he faced Bernstein, and both cars ran 5.84 (5.843/244 to Tim's 5.847/243.63), but Kenny got the win light. His next stop was Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He only qualified #10, but he beat Mark Oswald in the first round and worked his way into the final against Pulde. A good 5.85/233.16 finished runner-up to Dale's 5.78/252. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.669 at 242.06 to qualify #2 behind Bernstein's 5.62. A first-round 5.776/239.10 beat Billy Meyer, and in round two, his 5.825/240.00 took out John Collins. Grose slowed to 5.900/247.38 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." He was up against Bernstein in the final. It was a good, close race, but Kenny's 5.77/249 got the victory over Tim's 5.805/250.13. Tim qualified #10 at Bandimere at 6.056/225.00. In round one, he lost to Bernstein, 5.79/245 to 5.957/237.46. He qualified #13 at Brainerd at 5.927/240.64. In round one, he beat Billy Meyer, 6.008/239.36 to 6.48/239, but lost to John Collins in round two, 5.87/246 to 5.905/246.57. Tim qualified #10 at Indy at 5.754/258.17. Nemesis Bernstein got him in round one, again, 5.70/255 to 5.954/255.24. Tim broke through at Maple Grove, winning the inaugural NHRA Keystones. He qualified #8 at 5.745/234.78. In round one, he beat Bobby Lagana, 5.751/230.71 to 6.71/173. He beat Rick Johson in round two, 5.739/237.46 to 5.91/241. In round three, he beat Dale Pulde, 5.802/244.83, to a 13-second shut-off. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein. Tim finally broke the curse, driving around a Bernstein holeshot to take a 5.821/237.96 to 5.887/234.74 win. Tim qualified #14 at Phoenix at 6.012/227.27. In round one, he lost a close one to Al Segrni, 6.00/244 to 6.036/248.28. At the World Finals, Tim qualified #13 at 5.857/248.34. In round one, he upset Dale Pulde, 5.849/243.11 to 5.88/250. Tim did not show up for his second-round race against Kenny Bernstein. His best times were the 5.669 at Englishtown and 258.17 at Indy. |

Notes: Hoover failed to qualify at Pomona for the season-opening Winternationals. His best of 6.25/218.55 was a bit short of the 6.08 "bump." Tom ran much better at the Gatornationals after having a top-end fire during qualifying. Gene Snow helped tune the car, and Hoover ran a 5.86/247.93 to qualify #13. When Rick Johnson fouled, he took it easy with a 7.23/126.19 in the first round. But in the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein. He qualified last (#16) in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 6.06/234.49, and his 6.12/224.66 in the opening round fell to Billy Meyer's 5.99/250. Shortly after that, Tom was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and he reached the finals, where he would face John Force. John had to shut down with a water leak, and Hoover soloed for the victory. In June, he went to Brainerd for the Crown Auto Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.94/240 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo, who was driving the "Blue Max." He improved to 5.88/251.31 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to beat Mark Oswald's 5.84/247 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He came back out later to run a consolation race against Tom McEwen. Hoover's 5.87/252.45 beat the "Mongoose's" quicker 5.84/250. Tom ran 6.157/239.36 at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway in August. The best times of the year were 5.740/258.17 at Indy (#7 qualifier). |

Notes: Gordie was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang. Unfortunately, Bonin's engine let go, and he had a major fire just off the line. He was OK. The damage was minimal, and the team repaired it in time to make it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Gordie ran 6.410/233.16 (Top Speed) to qualify #11. A first-round 6.545/227.84 lost to Mike Miller's 6.43/220 in the "Green Elephant." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Bonin qualified #2 with a 6.30/233.76 behind Don Prudhomme's amazing 6.08/235. A 6.46/223.88 in the first round lost to Jake Johnston's 6.29/225. On March 16, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin continued to qualify well, running 6.437/230.17 for the #4 spot in the field. A first-round 6.678/225.00 lost to Tom Prock's 6.62/224. At the Seattle Opener, Bonin beat Jerry Ruth's Mustang in the first round, with a 6.56/220.58, but in his second race, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch's 6.27/218. Bonin was back in Seattle in June for the second Olympia All-Pro Series race. An opening round 6.54/224.43 beat Bill Spevacek's off-pace 7.87/138, and in the semifinals, Gordie ran 6.66/227.27 to beat Mike Miller's 6.84/211 in the "Green Elephant" car. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and Bonin took the victory with a track record speed of 230.17 coupled with an ET of 6.32 over Twig's 6.56/229 runner-up effort. Gordie qualified #3 at NHRA Columbus with a 6.472/220.04. He beat Bob Pickett in round one, 6.990/216.34 to 10.35/68. Shirl Greer beat him in round two, 6.53/206 to a 9.59 shut-off. On June 29, he was at Edmonton International for the NHRA Division Six race. Things did not go well there as he lost fire on his burnout in the first round, giving Ken McLean a solo. Things went better at Bremerton for the next NHRA Division Six race. A 6.69 qualified #1; in round one, his 6.82 beat Larry Palmer. He smoked the tires in the semifinals, but his 7.14 was still enough to beat Don Rae's 7.86. He faced Miller in the final and got a 6.61 victory over the "Elephant's" 6.97. He was running a new Schiefer clutch setup rather than the conventional Crower glide. He ran a 6.432/217 best at the PHR US 131 race, losing to Denny Savage. At NHRA Sanair, Gordie qualified #6 at 6.62/213.27 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.54/216 to 6.67/217.39. Gordie was the seventh alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.560/227.27. He qualified #14 at Seattle at 6.980/195.22 and lost to John Lombardo in round one, 6.86/196 to 7.255/216.34. Gordie ended the year with a fourth alternate effort at Ontario. We don't have those times, but the third alternate was Paul Smith at 6.439. |

Notes: The "Goose" had one of his best seasons in '84. It didn't start so well at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #8 in an eight-car show with a 6.52 and lost to Mike Dunn's 6.28/230 in the first round, with another 6.52/214. But at the next event, the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway, he finished runner up to Kenny Bernstein's 5.98/248 with a 6.07/236.84. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he lost to John Lombardo in the first round. He then ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.83 at 247.25 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals. Another 5.83/253.52 in the first round, beat Bob Gottschalk, but in the second round, the Corvette broke, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He clicked at the next race, the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, although he only ran a 5.98 to qualify #6. He eased past the first-round but then picked up the pace with a 5.87/245 in the second round that beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.04/245. In the semifinals, a 5.89 beat Billy Meyer's 5.88. In the final, he ran his old teammate, Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems while Tom motored to a 5.91/248.61 victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.86/252.10. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but broke on the line in the second round, advancing Bernstein. He ran well at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but failed to reach the finals. Tom ran several 5.80s at 250 plus this year, but his best times came in qualifying at Indy with a 5.804/254.23. Photo from IHRA Milan, MI, 1984. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore | At the World Finals, Sherm Gunn's 5.89 in late Sat. qualifying beat McEwen's '95-'97 to the finish line. ND after-report said Tom Prock was trying different gear ratios in the 'Goose's Coors Corvette. - Joe Moore |

Notes: John qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but in the first round, his blower exploded while running eventual winner Al Segrini. Things went much better at Gainesville, where he qualified #5 for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.849/249.30. He ran an easy 6.05/231.36 to advance in round one, when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems, and in round two, another "easy" 6.09/231.36 got around John Force in round two. Both he and his opponent, Billy Meyer, smoked the tires in the semifinals, but Collins' 6.45/216 tripped the win light over Meyer's 6.44/239. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein, and John had a ringside seat as he watched Kenny run the sport's first 260 (5.80/260.11) while his 5.92/245.90 got him the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, John's 5.93/247.93 qualified #12. Unfortunately, in the first round, an off-pace 6.19/243.24 lost to Tim Grose's 5.94/241. He failed to qualify for the eight-car show at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge after crashing with Ed McCulloch during qualifying. Both cars were destroyed, but the drivers were alright. John rebuilt the Camaro after the Baton Rouge crash. Photo from US Nationals. |

Notes: Jim started the season at Pomona, where he qualified #11 with a 5.29/282.48. Another 5.29 at 288.27 advanced in round one, when his opponent, Ray Higley, broke. In round two, an off pace of 5.61/225.16 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.38/281. Epler qualified #2 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.19/290.97 behind Hofmann's 5.14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.26/288.73 beat Dean Skuza's 5.38/272. In the second round, Jack Wyatt fouled against him, and Jim's 5.81/180.46 advanced. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinal. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Jim's 5.32/280.51 "only" qualified #11. He had a close race in the opening round that saw his 5.31/289.85 beat Tony Pedregon's 5.32/282, but he lost to the eventual winner Hofmann, in round two. The NHRA Gatornationals was not a memorable outing for Epler. He only qualified #15 with a 5.35/285.26, and he lost to Skuza in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held in mid-April. His 5.31/286.98 qualified #9, and in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Chuck Etchells. Shortly after that, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There he ran 5.38/287.90 to qualify #11. An easy 6.34/150.40 advanced in round one, when Whit Bazemore got out of shape and shut down, but in round two, his 5.31/288.36 fell to Etchells' 5.20/293. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1988 (same paint). NHRA mandated a new 3.20 rear end gear rule in the fuel classes. One team that was happy about the rule was this one. Ed McCulloch and Bernie Fedderly had been running the 3.20 gear since late in the '89 season. They were at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January, where Ed came off the truck and reset the track record with a 5.29 at 242.45. The next day, he returned to run 5.26/265.95 before smoking the tires to a 12.27/96.54 on a follow-up run. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, McCulloch's 5.29/266.42 qualified #2 behind John Force's 5.28/275. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 5.27 (Low ET and a track record) at 262.39 to beat Jim White's 5.50/258 in the "Hawaiian." In round two, Glenn Mikres' 5.63/257 lost to Ed's 5.38/258.99. Things continued to go his way in the semifinals, where a tire-hazing 5.89/235.78 beat Dale Pulde, who smoked the tires hard. In the final, he faced newcomer K.C. Spurlock, the last qualifier in the field who had beaten Force in the opening round. But Fedderly dialed in too much power, and Ed smoked the tires helplessly to a 21.37/31.07 while K.C. ran 5.78/186 for his first victory. The team's next stop was back at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. They didn't run nearly as well there as the month before; a 5.40/264.62 qualified #9. In the first round, he and Mark Oswald, who was driving for "Candies and Hughes," had a great race that saw both drivers run 5.37 (Ed at 265.48), but Oswald got to the stripe first. Qualifying did not go very well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch only qualified #14 with a 5.63/260.64. Fedderly stepped the car up in the first round, with a 5.31/274.13, taking out White's 5.73/188. A consistent 5.32/270.67 beat R.C. Sherman's 5.41/271 in the second round, but Ed smoked the tires against Bruce Larson in the semifinal. The next event on the NHRA calendar was the Gatornationals at Gainesville. McCulloch qualified #5 at 5.41/261.93. He almost lost in the first round, when he and his opponent, Johnny West, smoked the tires. Ed recovered first and won with a 6.69/245.63. Lane choice was not his for round two. He didn't need it as a 5.35/265.95 was enough to knock Oswald out of the show. Larson got out of shape and shut off in the semifinal, so Ed advanced with a 5.44/265.09. The final was a rematch of Pomona, with Spurlock not being as much of an underdog now. He even carried lane choice with him. But this time, Ed reversed the finish with his 5.33/267.37 getting the victory over K.C.'s 5.40/273. The next stop was Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car field and a 5.34/265.33 qualified #4. He improved to a great 5.28/271.16 to beat Spurlock's close 5.29/275 in round one, but a wheelstanding 7.46/110.63 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.44/265 in the semifinal. It didn't take Ed long to get back in the winner's circle as he won the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His 5.26/272.47 qualified #3. He then ran 5.35/267.30 to beat Oswald's 5.48/268. A second-round 5.44/258.84 beat Richard Hartman's 5.56/242. Larson smoked the tires against him in the semifinal and a 5.34/263.85 advanced. He went up against Paul Smith, who was driving Chuck Etchells Beretta in the final. Surprisingly enough, of the two, Smith had run the best number of eliminations, a 5.29 in round one. His semifinal 5.35 was nothing to sneeze at either. But he smoked the tires in the final, and Ed got his second win of the year with a 5.31/258.91. |

Notes: John started the '90 season by qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.28/275.48. He lost to eventual winner K.C. Spurlock in the first round, with a 5.42/278.98 losing to Spurlock's 5.32/272. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #3 with a 5.33/273.30. He beat Al Hofmann in the first round, and in round two, his 5.26/279.15 (Top Speed) beat Jim White's 5.41/270 in the "Hawaiian."In the semifinals, he again lost to the eventual winner when both he and Dale Pulde ran 5.33 (Force at 274.64), but Pulde got the win. The next stop was at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. John qualified #1 with a 5.25/272.39. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.23/273.88 single when Dal Denton failed to show. In round two a 5.28/279.32 advanced when opponent Mark Sievers went into a wheelstand and shut off. In the semifinals, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" Probe. A 5.28/278.37 did the trick, putting Mark's 5.41/283 on the trailer. In the final, he met the '89 NHRA Funny Car Champion, Bruce Larson. Unfortunately for Larson, he smoked the tires and shut off while Force motored to his sixth NHRA National Event victory with a 5.36/272.39. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.30/272.64 qualified #2. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a 5.55/257 beat Jerry Caminito in round two, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Spurlock. The fifth race of the NHRA season was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. John qualified #4 with a 5.29/274.89. He beat Johnny West in round one, and a 5.38/264 advanced in round two when Hofmann's T-Bird broke. In the semifinals, he got beat by a strong running Paul Smith. Smith's 5.35 beat John's close 5.37. Only 14 cars showed at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Force set a track record 5.27 at 277.26 in qualifying #1. He lasted until the semifinals where crew chief, Austin Coil dialed in too much power and he smoked the tires and lost to Ed McCulloch. It took a while, but John got his second win of '90 at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There, he set a track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.36 at 272.39. He beat Kalitta and a 5.42/268 advanced past round two when White broke on the line. In the semifinals, McCulloch smoked the tires and Force made his way into the final with a 5.50/265. There he beat Richard Hartman for the win. He didn't have to wait nearly as long for his next victory as it came at the next event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.30 (Low ET) and beat Wyatt Radke in round one. In round two, Art Hendey fouled against him and his 5.51/254 advanced. In the semifinals, he ran a 5.46/257 over a tire-smoking Spurlock. In the final, he ran the "Hawaiian."White ran 5.49/261 in the final, but it finished second best to John's 5.37/275.48. The trend continued into Canada where NHRA held it's Grandnationals. John won his third event in a row. A 5.42/268.17 qualified #3 and another 5.42 in the first round, beat Gary Densham. In the second round, his 5.40/255 beat Spurlock's 5.45/260. He slowed to 5.46/267.06 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat White's 5.64/236. That put him into the final with Oswald. Oswald had problems and shut off while Force ran 5.40/267.93 for the win. A lot of eyes were on Force at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals to see if he would win his fourth race in a row. It was not to be. He qualified #4 with a 5.28/275.31, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the first round, when both ran 5.38's (Force at 270.67). He made a stop at Kansas City for its Summernationals race. Six FCs were in attendance. John set a track record at 5.42 in the semifinals on a solo run, but in the final, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires losing to Densham. Back on the NHRA trail, he was at the Mile High Nationals where he ran a 5.55/255.60 to qualify first. A first-round 5.62/265.99 (Top Speed) beat Freddie Neely. In round two, John showed he could drive, running a 5.59/254 to beat Larson's quicker 5.56. Unfortunately, a semifinal 5.56/259.74 lost to McCulloch's 5.53/257. The twelfth NHRA race of the season was the California Nationals. There John returned to his winning ways. A 5.35/274.05 qualified #2. He beat Radke in the first round, and in round two, a 5.46/272 beat Glenn Mikres. In the semifinals, he stopped McCulloch with a 5.54 and that put him in the final against Larson. Larson had set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying so it was a good race. John had the power to win though, running 5.44/270.35 over Bruce's 5.47/268. This was Force's fifth win of the season on the NHRA tour. |

Notes: Mike qualified #5 at Pomona with a 6.15/234.98. and in round one, he beat Gary Burgin's 6.47/229 with a 6.21/236.22. In round two, he was on the receiving end of Raymond Beadle's track record 5.93 in the "Blue Max." Mike lost with a 6.38/231.95. The team did not go to Bakersfield for the March Meet, choosing to run at Sacramento instead. Mike really opened some eyes when the car made a tire hazing 5.84 pass. This was the quickest time ever for a flopper, and it backed up the run Mike's dad, Jim, made in January at OCIR when Jim had driven the "Hawaiian" to a 5.85 while covering for his son behind the wheel. Mike's next pass at Sacramento was 6.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.10/231.95. His first-round 6.064/233.76 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/238. The team did not compete at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, and all the Funny Car teams boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals that year. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.12/229.00 qualified #4. In the opening round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.41 that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.31. Mike qualified #6 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.02/243.24. Roy Harris smoked the tires against him in round one, and he advanced with a 6.04/241.28. In the second round, both he and Beadle smoked the tires hard, and Mike recovered first to win with a 6.56/231.95. Dunn blazed the tires again in the semifinal and shut off to a 9.48/79 loss against Dale Armstrong's 6.18/231. Shortly after that, he won the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, where his 6.28/227.28 stopped Burgin's 6.36/228 in the final. Yet another win followed at Brainerd Raceway for the fifth NHRA Western Regional. Mike qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/233.76. In the opening round, he then improved to 6.23/234.98 to defeat Glenn Mikres in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, a consistent 6.24/236.84 covered Tom Hoover's 6.75/222. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and Pickett had troubles and shut down while Dunn ran 6.50/234.37 for the victory. Martin, Michigan, held its U.S. 131 Funny Car Championships that had all cars make two runs and the two quickest cars meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" was strong, running 6.12/238.72 (Top Speed) to beat Frank Hawley's 6.13/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the second race, Mike set Low ET with a 6.09/236.22 over Mikres. He ran Hawley again in the final, but the "Hawaiian" broke and slowed to an 11.00 in a runner-up effort to Hawley's 6.15/216. Mike won the Golden Gate Nationals. His best NHRA times were 5.933 at Indy and 243.24 at the Summernationals. |

Notes: I saw a picture of the NW-local Korzan Monza Bonin drove in the early 80s when SIR and Portland were AHRA from '81 to '83. I was in SoCal at the time, thinking those rainy mooks have to wait till April for nitro, and Orange County jumps off the first Saturday in January. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1989. | Richard qualified #15 at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 6.08/246.84. He lost to John Force in the first round. He then went to Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals where his 5.69/263.85 qualified on the "bump.” In the opening round, he smoked the tires and shut down to 17.74 while opponent Art Hendey advanced with a 5.53/270. NHRA's next stop was at Seattle International for the Seafair Nationals. Hartman ran a career-best (to this point) 5.55/266.74 to qualify #14. In the first round, he lost to Force. Richard did not go to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. There, he improved to 5.51 during early qualifying. Later that was bettered by a 5.39/276.58 which was run on only his ninth pass since switching to fuel. But after that, run, the team switched from a two-speed transmission to a three-speed. They also changed the rear end from a 3.20 to a 2.90. After the changes, Hartman made another qualifying pass and ran 5.42. His 5.39 got him the #9 spot in the show, forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. The "Snake" run 5.26/273 to trailer Hartman's off-pace 6.05/178.50. |

Notes: 1984 was not Tom's most successful year. He qualified #3 for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.25 but fouled against Bryan Raines in the first round. He failed to qualify at Pomona (#4 alternate at 6.15/236.84), and things didn't go much better at Gainesville, where he was the sixth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 6.362/233.16. He also missed the field in Atlanta, finishing as the #2 alternate at 6.217/238.09. Early in May, Tom was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.53/168 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round of eliminations. He also lost in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships after qualifying #9. Hoover qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a booming 6.057/250.00, but that resulted in a first-round loss to Jim Head, 5.84/254 to 6.98/138. Indy also was disappointing as he failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals with a #5 alternate 6.070/239.36 effort. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: At Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, Hoover ran 5.84/241.93 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 5.86/245.23 beat Jim Head's 5.93/257, and in the semifinals, his 5.94/233.16 beat a tire-smoking John Martin. This put Tom into the final, where he ran John Force. A 5.91/240.00 wasn't enough to overcome John's 5.80/254. Tom qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.84/246.57. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.60-98 that lost to John Collins' 5.80/210. Atlanta held an eight-car Funny Car show early in the year, and Hoover qualified on the pole with a 5.99/243.90. He beat a tire-smoking Steve Hodkinson in the first round, with a 6.00/236.84, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.86/236.22 when Mark Oswald broke against him in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. In the final, he faced John Martin, and unfortunately for Tom, he smoked the tires to an 11.17 and watched as Martin roared to the win with a 6.02/243. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.88/250.69 qualified #9. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein. Hoover stepped it up to a 5.766/254.23, but it wasn't enough to overcome Kenny's 5.64/255. Back at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Tom qualified #11 with a 5.93/245.76. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Photo from Indy 1986. Tom's best times were 5.766 in the first round, at NHRA Gainesville and 261.62 Top Speed of the Meet at NHRA Brainerd. |

Notes: Mark was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.21/287.90. In the first round, his 5.28/270.92 lost to Gary Clapshaw's 5.11/292. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.23/266.07 qualified #9. An opening round 5.24/278.89 beat Dale Pulde, but in round two, Oswald's 5.21/287.53 lost to John Force's 5.10/258. The next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Mark ran 5.21/261.09 to qualify #12. He beat Tony Pedregon in round one with a 5.32/282.57, but it was Force who stopped him again in round two. This time his 5.22/278.98 lost to John's 5.12/295. The next stop for the team was Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 5.21/262.62 qualified #11, and in the opening round, he improved to 5.13/287.81 to defeat Chuck Etchells' 5.20/244. In round two, his 5.21/283.19 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.09/296. He did not compete at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.15/289.01. The team used a new injector from Don Hampton with a 15 percent bigger frontal area than the Enderle unit they previously used. Both he and Tom Hoover had problems in round one, but Oswald's 5.76/259.74 came top on top. In round two, his 5.28/276.15 beat an early-lifting Kenji Okazaki at 10.57. Force's 5.13/298 got him in the semi-final, where Mark smoked the tires and shut off to 15.41/76.80. He Also ran 299.50 at Topeka in 1996. |

Notes: January 1971: John Mazmanian clocked the first official, backed-up 220-mph run in a Funny Car at Orange County Int'l Raceway (OCIR). - NHRA | Rich was at OCIR for its opening All-Pro race. He had problems in the first round, and his 8.80 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 7.08. Shortly after that, he was at Lions for the first AHRA Grand American race. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Siroonian easily made the show and his opening round 6.78/215.82 beat Tom Hoover. But in round two, he was disqualified for crossing the centerline while racing Gene Snow. On January 24, he made history at the second OCIR race. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.85. In the first round his 6.77/220.58 (first 220 mph FC) beat Jake Johnston. In the semifinals, he ran 6.81/213.77 to beat Stan Shiroma. He went up against Gene Conway in the final and it was no contest. Rich's 6.83/218.97 won when Conway saw that it was pointless and shut down to 8.22/114. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, John Mazmanian had two cars in the field. Larry Reyes drove the other car and qualified it #4 while Siroonian's 7.19/195.65 got the #8 spot. He improved to 7.03/205.41 in the first round, to beat Don Schumacher, but in round two, his 7.11 lost to Johnston's 7.03. The third OCIR All-Pro race was run on February 13. Rich was there and ran over 220 again, but that wasn’t the big news as Don Prudhomme had blasted over 226! Rich ran well, stopping Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" car in the first round, with a 6.85/220.04. He beat Dunn in the semifinals with an engine blowing 6.87/221.13, but was unable to return for his final round showing with Prudhomme. The team did not run at the AHRA Winternationals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, Siroonian’s 6.95 qualified #1. He then improved to 6.93 (Low ET) before losing to Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" in the semifinal. Rich shut off to 7.20/168.88 while Condit advanced with a 7.13. They also did not make the trip to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but they were at OCIR the following week (March 27) for the final All-Pro race. Rich’s 6.87/216.86 qualified #2, but in the opening round against Gary Burgin, he had problems and shut down to 11.21/62.32. We need to confirm the 6.64. |

Notes: Leroy started the year at the wheel of the Ramchargers Challenger. He was runner-up to Butch Maas at the NHRA Winternationals before winning the NHRA Gatornationals. He switched to the team of Candies & Hughes in the Fall of 71 and promptly reset the NHRA National Record at Amarillo during the NHRA World Finals with an altitude corrected 6.80. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet he ran a very competitive 6.74 at 221.13 narrowly missing the final round which pitted the two lowest ET cars. |

Notes: Worsham started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.36/284.18. A 5.31/284.81 in round one, beat Gary Densham's 5.44/249, but in round two, his 5.47/254.30 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.29/262. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.37/279.93 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he lost to Richard Hartman in round one. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Supernationals. Del's 5.29/280.02 qualified #4. Paul Smith broke against him in the first round, and Del advanced with a 5.27/280.28. In round two, he lost to Al Hofmann. Worsham's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He ran 5.68/254.30 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. A 5.72/240.77 in round one, advanced when Paula Martin's Probe broke. In the semifinals, his 5.66/261.39 (Top Speed) beat Freddie Neely's 5.80/247. This put him into the final against Tom Hoover. This became an expensive pass for Del. About 700 feet into the run, the crankshaft broke. This caused a massive fireball. The engine explosion was so bad that it bent the upper main frame rail. The only thing holding the remains of the JP-1 in the car was the oil lines. Del was OK, but the car was totaled. Del recovered to have a pretty good NHRA national event season. He was runner up at Atlanta, Englishtown, and Indy and made it to round 3 at Memphis and Denver. He Ran NHRA best times of 5.194/286.89 at Ennis Fall, but he practically lived in the low 5.20s at 280 plus for the second half of the season. He set Top Speed at Sonoma at 280.89. |

Notes: The team sold their '78 car and borrowed the '77 car to run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, the team failed to qualify. The new car was ready for the NHRA Gatornationals, where it was awarded the "Best Appearing." It didn't run too bad either, as Pulde qualified #13 with a 6.39/228.42. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and shut off to 16.30-42.69 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 6.35/239. The following week, the team was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Pulde "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked the tires in their race, and Dale ran 6.32 to advance. He improved to 6.21 in the semi-final to beat Tripp Shumake's 6.82. He faced Paul Smith in the final, and Pulde got his first win of the year with his 6.73/230.17 beating Smith's 6.72/221. He also made it into the final at the next IHRA race, the Dixie Nationals held in Atlanta. There he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the final. He did not compete at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bernstein stopped him again at the next IHRA race, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. This time it happened in the first round. Pulde overpowered the track, and his 6.72/232.55 lost to Bernstein's 6.19/232. He qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.17/231.95. An off-pace 6.80/190.67 in the first round lost to Ron Colson's 6.49/228 in the "Hawaiian." Dale was much happier at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.27 "only" qualified #4. Both he and Frank Oglesby smoked the tires in round one, but Pulde's 6.85 came out on top. He beat Beadle's 6.87 in the semi-final with a 6.49. In the final, he faced Bernstein. Kenny slept, and his 6.31/223 lost to Pulde's 6.47/234.98. At the end of June, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein. This time Kenny fouled against him. Pulde then lost in the semi-final. A good year with a lot of qualifying success and some round wins. Best times at NHRA Indy in qualifying at 6.084/239.36. Stock Stroke motor. | 6.11 NHRA Englishtown NJ 7/79 lost to Beadles 6.08 quickest side by side FC race |
