Notes: Started year in the Trans Am, which had best times of 5.374 at 276.49. Best times for the Thunderbird body were 5.369 at 266.74. Keeping only one entry for this team in 1989 with combined times. Art started his '89 season by qualifying his Firebird #4 in the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event with a 5.49. He made it all the way to the final before losing to Ed McCulloch. At Pomona, he qualified #15 with a 5.51/266.27 for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 5.54/260.94 beat Scott Kalitta's 5.78/218, but he lost to Jim White in the second round. At the second NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals a 5.37 qualified #8 and this time he made it into the semifinals, after getting around Kenny Bernstein who broke a rear end in round two, where he ran Scott Kalitta, but smoked the tires and lost. He qualified #7 with a 5.40 at the Gatornationals on March 19. Once again he made it into the semifinals after stopping Mark Oswald in the second round with a 5.45/270. In the semifinal, Art broke on the line against Ed McCulloch. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in early April and Art qualified #6 in the eight-car field. The track was damp from rain and all cars were only allowed one shot to make the show. Hendey got in with a 6.94/185.51. Not to bad for the conditions considering that McCulloch and Mark Oswald failed to qualify and only got in as alternates. Art lost to John Force in round one. He was in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals where he qualified #2 with a 5.39/268.97, but he lost to Force in the first round, again. The NHRA tour's next stop was at Memphis for the Mid South Nationals. Art used a 5.47/242.65 to qualify #10, but lost to Don Prudhomme in the second round. Art then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified #8 in the eight-car field with a 5.74/257.57. He faced McCulloch in the first round, and he crossed the centerline. The following week he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.56/262.54 qualified #7, but he lost in the first round. He took another first-round loss at the NHRA Springnationals where after qualifying #10 with a 5.50/263.75 he lost to Bruce Larson's 5.25/271 with a 5.75/193.88. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.65/256.11 qualified #12, and he beat McCulloch in the first round, with a 5.63/260.79. In round two, both he and Kalitta fought for traction and Hendey's 6.95/163.51 came out on top. This matched him up against Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" car in the semifinals. Art ran a 5.85/250 that lost to Oswald's 5.60/238. Next stop was at Milan Dragway for IHRA's Northern Nationals. Art qualified #4 there, but he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round. His bad luck continued at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Although he qualified #11 with a 5.45/269.62 he once again lost early. This time it was eventual winner Bernstein who stopped him in the first round. On July 23,Art showed up in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in his T-Bird. His 5.83/239.80 qualified #9, and he lost to low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, again. He made it past the first-round at the NHRA California Nationals. Art's 5.47/271.16 qualified #8 and in round one, his 5.53/270.10 beat a tire-smoking Richard Hartman. In round two, both he and Oswald smoked the tires with Mark's 6.49/239 getting the win light over his 6.87/201.34. | At the IHRA Loctite/Nationwise World Nationals, Hendey qualified #3 in the 8 Car field with a 5.632/267.06 & Faced #6 qualifier Whit Bazemore in round 1. Hendey ran 5.845/247.93 in his losing effort to Bazemore's 5.756/252.81. |

Notes: Won Epping Funny Car Nats in late 73 at 6.51/201.79. Also ran 6.44 at NED Epping. Prock qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.599/222.22. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.889/170.77 fell to Leroy Goldstein's 6.58/222 in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. He won over an eight-car field at Atco in April for an NHRA Funny Car Pro circuit race. Times were way off at this race. In round one, his 7.75/202.24 beat a tire-smoking David Ray at 10.40. In the semifinal, he won a coasting contest with Al Hanna when both cars broke. Tom's 8.78/150.50 beat the "Eastern Raider's" 14.33. He faced Roy Harris in the final, and both cars made troubled runs, but Prock got the victory with an 8.43/205.01 over Harris' 12.56/70 in the "Frantic Ford." Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for another eight-car show. He didn't stay long as his 7.08/181.08 in the opening round fell to Al Segrini's 6.68/219. He competed at the Atco Funny Car Factory Showdown race at the end of the month (April 29). His 7.36/154.90 advanced when Richard Tharp had a rear-end break in the "Blue Max" in the first round. But the car lost fire in the semifinal against eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. On May 6, he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Division One opener. A 6.96/204.42 defeated Hanna's 7.70 in round one, but in the semifinal, Dale Emery's 6.48/222 beat his 6.85/198.67. In June, Prock was at Cayuga, Ontario, for the Canadian All-Pro Championships. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Pete Hill. He then won the third NHRA Division One race held at Maple Grove on June 24. He got a solo in round one, when Lew Arrington broke. Tom advanced with a 6.69/203.16. He got another solo in the semifinal when Arnie Swensen's Mustang broke. This time Prock "cooled it" with a 9.41/83.17. He faced Joe Jacono in the final, and Prock's 6.89/216.86 scored the win over Jacono's 7.05/209 runner-up effort. His next stop was at Connecticut for its Summer Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, he beat the "Shark" with a 6.68/219.51. Tom continued to look strong in round two, where his 6.60/221.67 took out Fred Goeske's ailing Vega. An even better 6.55/221.67 defeated Hill in the semifinal. But in the final, he faced Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse" Mustang. Larry kept strides with him in eliminations and even ran a quicker 6.54 in his semifinal win. The two had a great final round race that saw Fullerton get out on Prock and lead all the way with his 6.51/221 beating Prock's 6.45/223.88. Larry's car exploded into flames just past the finish line to make the race even more exciting. Prock's times were good enough to reset both ends of the track record. On July 4, he was at Englishtown for its Funny Car Spectacular. He lost to eventual winner Arrington in the opening round. But he returned for a consolation race against Fullerton, which he won with a 6.56/222.22 as Larry shut off early. Not long after (July 15), he was back at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A great 6.441/226.13 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.40/230. But he smoked the tires hard in the first round, and his 7.10/207.85 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.57/210. Prock got another win shortly after that at Lebanon Valley's Northeast Funny Car Nationals. His "Custom Body" Dodge was flying there as no one was anywhere close to his times. In round one, his 6.39/225 beat Liberman's 6.65/219. The closest anyone else came to his time in winning the first-round was 6.76! Prock just got quicker in the semifinal, running 6.37/226.40 over Hill's 6.78/204. In the final, Prock ran a track record 6.35 at 227.60 (Top Speed) to beat Tim Kushi's 6.86/209. He then won the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where his final round 6.74/218 beat Arrington's 6.91/210. Earlier, Prock had set Top Speed at 221.13. Things didn't go so well for him at the Atco World Funny Car Championships. He shut down on the line with problems in the opening round. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.812, but he didn't run in eliminations as alternate Stan Bowman took his place in the field. Another win came his way at the NHRA Division One race at Pittsburgh International. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.55/204.08 to beat David Ray in Mike Burkhart's Vega. Earlier in the race, he also ran 215.82 for Top Speed. He also won the New England Grand American Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he ran 6.48/211 in qualifying. Wayne Oxner fell to his 6.62/218 in the opening round, and in round two, Tom ran 6.49/226 to beat Ken Poffenberger. Arrington fried his tires against him in the semifinal, and he advanced with a 6.54/225. But Prock saved his best for the final, where he reset both ends of the track record with a 6.37/226.70 in stopping Liberman's 6.47/220. Prock had problems at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships. The car was acting up, and he was unable to run it in eliminations. After missing the show, he got the car sorted out and made a pass. His 6.63/220.04 was good enough for Low ET and Top Speed honors. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, Prock's 6.452/228.42 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round encounter with low qualifier Prudhomme. In their race, Tom ran career-best numbers of 6.301/229.00. Unfortunately, even that wasn't good enough to beat the "Snake's" 6.27/226. At the Amarillo World Finals, Tom qualified #2 for the Eastern Team and #5 overall with a 6.79. He beat Leroy Goldstein in round one, 6.64/218.96 to 6.69/191. In round two, Don Cain got to him with a holeshot, 6.66/207 to Tom's 6.60/221.67. The team did not run at the Ontario Supernationals. |

Notes: Goldstein was at Pomona for the twice rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals. 58 Funny Cars were attempting to qualify, and the track was terrible. Leroy ran a 7.4 and was the #5 qualifier. A first-round 7.82 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.47. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #5 again with a more respectable 6.49. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, before losing to Don Schumacher's 6.34 in round two with a 6.61. Goldstein won the Division 4 Opener at LaPlace, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.73/217.39 before beating Paul Smith in Fred Wells'Charger in the final with a 6.74/216.86. In late April at Dallas for the IHRA Longhorn Nationals, Leroy qualified both the team's Top Fuel car and the Funny Car first in both classes. A 6.48 qualified the "Cuda #1. He also won both classes as well as he won Top Fuel and ran 6.60 in the first round, of Funny Car over Beebe in Larry Huff's car, a 6.52 beat Shirl Greer in round two, and a semifinal 6.57 beat Preston Davis. He met up with Mike Snively driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite in the final. Unfortunately, the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda broke, and Snively soloed for the win. He was runner-up at Lubbock Dragway in Texas for the Division 4 race held there. He smoked the tires in the final and lost to Jim Nicoll. At the NHRA Springnationals, Leroy qualified #10 but lost to Beebe's 6.69/210 in the first round, with a 6.91/213.77. In July, the team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.59 qualified #12. A first-round 6.61/222 beat Gene Snow's 6.81/173. In round two, Leroy advanced with a 6.64/178.57 over Tom Crevasse. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.51/224.43 when Dale Emery broke. In the final, he met Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer owned Vega. Leroy got the victory with a 6.74/214.79, beating Pat's 6.78/223. Goldstein was in Canada on August 3 for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.74. In the first round, he got a single when Ken Achs broke in the "Pacemaker" Vega. Leroy ran 6.96 to move into the semifinal. He ran a 6.70/218.44 but lost to Emery's quick-leaving 6.71/215. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.49/228.42 qualified #15 (tough field)! A first-round 6.373/229.00 beat Clare Sanders' 6.52/225 in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In round two, he advanced with a 6.66 when Schumacher had a bad vibration and shut off early. Both he and Don Prudhomme ran 6.52's in the semifinals, Leroy at 229, but the "Snake" got the win. |

Notes: Pedregon started the season by qualifying low at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a track record 5.01 at 297.02 (Low ET and Top Speed). In round one, his 5.28/264.23 beat Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, in round two, his 5.25/283.01 lost to Dean Skuza's fireballing 5.22/285. He "only" qualified #12 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.35/273.30. The car "woke up" in eliminations by running 5.20/279.06 over Jim Epler's 5.61/190 in the opening round. He then shaved off another tenth in round two, where his 5.10/287.72 stopped Hoover. Cruz had a close race with Chuck Etchells in the semi-final that saw Pedregon's 5.18/278.63 get the better of Etchells' 5.20/247. He faced John Force in the final, which was another good race, but Force's 5.18/288 won over Cruz's 5.19/253.68. |

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis, and a 426 Chrysler Hemi powered the car on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy James Ibusuki). | Reyes raced Ed Schartman on March 3 at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race. He took the win by winning the first two races with 8.22 and 8.27 times. In the last race, Schartman won with an 8.35. On April 7, Reyes had a tough best of three match against Tommy Grove at Kingston. Both cars were strong runners in early '68, with Grove's Mustang being the "killer car" on the match race circuit. Grove went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Reyes won with an 8.12 at a track record speed of 187.50. Tommy got a holeshot win in the second race with his 7.99 beating Reyes' track record 7.98. These were the first sevens even turned by an Funny Car at Kingston. In the final race, the "Super 'Cuda" got the holeshot, and its 8.10 beat Grove's 7.98. On April 13, Larry beat Terry Hedrick in a best of three match at Houston, and the following day (April 14), he downed Kelly Chadwick three straight, running a track record 7.94. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for an eight-car show. A first-round 8.02/167.28 beat Bob Sullivan's 8.30/181, while in the semifinals, he soloed with a 9.54/104.40 when Ted Detar's new car broke. In the final, he faced Dick Harrell. The two had a good race, with Reyes' 7.92 (Low ET) at 177.16, beating out Harrell's 8.03/182. Early in June, Reyes took on "Dyno Don" Nicholson in a best of three match at Milan. In their first race, Don's 7.81/175 beat Larry's 7.88/183.66, but the "Super 'Cuda" came back to win the next two races for the match race with runs of 7.84/178.57 and 7.78/182.92. He won the Norwood, New England, 1/8 mile Funny Car Championships on June 21. Going into this race, the track record was held by Grove at 5.08. It was an eight-car show, and Reyes ran 5.12/146.34 in the opening round to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 5.23/142. He broke the track record in the semifinals with a 5.03/149 over Lew Arrington's 5.86/115 in the "Brutus" Firebird. He faced Dick Loehr in the final. Dick's Mustang had engine trouble and slowed to 10.4 while Reyes lowered the track mark ever further with a 4.99 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was back at Milan for another match race with Schartman. Reyes won the first race with an 8.02/181 over Eddie, who blew a transmission. But the Comet was strong on that day and, after fixing the trans, beat Larry in the last two races. In the second race, Larry's 7.99/179.79 lost to Schartman's 7.81/181, and in the last race, Ed reset the track record with a 7.73 at 184 over Reyes' 7.87/189.64. Near the end of June, he went to Detroit for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he opened up eliminations by running 8.07/176.81 over Tom Smallwood's 8.24/159 in the "Kingfish." But a second-round 8.13/177.51 lost to Hedrick's 7.83/179. Another win came at the Supercharged Invitational at Capitol on July 13. There he ran 7.77/191.88 to beat Lyle Fisher's 7.88/188 in the first round. In round two, his 8.07/185.94 advanced when Fred Goeske blew a transmission. A semifinal 7.68/189.06 beat Arrington, who got out of shape and shut down. He faced Nicholson in the final, and he covered him easily with a 7.54/192.03 (Top Speed and Low ET), taking the win over "Dyno's" 8.05/181. By this time, the "Super 'Cuda" was considered one of the top FCs to beat as it was almost always setting top times everywhere it ran. Yet another win came at the Super Stock Nationals. There a final round 7.53 beat a blower exploding Schartman in the final. Reyes had set Top Speed of the meet at 193.12. | Confirmed 7.54/192.03 at Fremont 1968 - Mick Coyne |

Notes: Rick was the second alternate at NHRA Gainesville at 6.270/208.81. He qualified #1 with a 6.07/230.17 at Englishtown on May 4 for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. Rick lasted until the semifinals, where he shut off to an 8.54 that lost to Bruce Larson's 6.71. The following week (May 10), he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic. Six cars made two runs each, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race against Al Segrini, he got out of shape and shut off. He again got crossed up in his second race and lost to Gary Burgin. At the NHRA Springnationals, he ran a 6.24/225.56 to qualify #12. He beat John Force in the first round, 6.19/236.22 to 6.29/235.60, but in round two, his 6.25/236.22 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.22/227.84. Rick qualified #2 with a 6.12/222.77 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Rick lasted until the semifinals, where the Mustang broke against Roy Harris. He qualified #10 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals at 6.129/241.28, but his 6.251/234.98 in the first round lost to Burgin's 6.12/238.09. In August, he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.28/234.37 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He lost to Force in the first round, 6.158/239.36 to 6.205/231.36. Johnson ran really well in New England for the NHRA Division 1 final on August 17. His 6.13/237.46 qualified #2 behind Burgin's 6.04. These two would work their way to the final. Rick beat Kosty Ivanof in round one with a 6.16/232.55, and in the semifinals, his 6.10/235.60 took out John Speelman. On his way to the final, Gary had run a best of 6.01 (Low ET). The two had an interesting final, with Burgin shutting off to 11.33/71, but Rick thinking he had the win wrapped up, got out of shape and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. Rick was the 13th alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.33/231.36. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. (This was the former Gary Burgin "Pete Rose" car). Photo from 1980 US Nationals. | If they ran the Omni, it was at the very end of '80. The Ford was a silver car with all the colorful stripes at the rear half of the body and on the hood. The Omni "brightened up" the scheme while still on a silver background. - John Kilburg |

Notes: John qualified #4 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.18/238.72 but lost to Rick Johnson in the first round. He also qualified (#6) at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but his first-round 6.73/193.96 lost to Rob Williams' 6.29/232. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.67/207.85. After a one-week rain delay, John improved to 6.15 in the first round, to beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.12 that lost to Dale Armstrong's 6.15. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Force ran 6.065/240.64 to qualify #8. But a 6.283/241.28 in the opening round lost to Len Imbrogno's 6.20/230. He failed to qualify at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. |

Notes: John qualified #2 at the AHRA Winternationals, but lost in the first round. Things were even worse at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he failed to qualify. If that wasn't bad enough, he went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, and while attempting to qualify, crashed into the guardrail. The Datsun Z body flew off and the car caught fire. John was OK, but the fire totaled what was left of the car. John got the first Datsun body out of the mold, which was originally supposed to be Gary Densham's. Densham had to wait for the second one. |

Notes: George Johnson was at Warner Robins late in March for the NHRA Division 2 Opener. He had his share of problems as the best run he got in during qualifying was 10.30. That was OK because only seven cars turned up for the eight-car show. In the first round, his 7.36/127.84 lost to Larry Fullerton's 6.56/211 in the "Trojan Horse.” Shortly after that, (April 4), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals, but he had bad luck there as the car broke against Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in the opening round. In April, the team was at Maple Grove for the Spring All-Pro Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show and Johnson was running strong as he set Low ET at 6.29 in the first round, of eliminations. But Gary Burgin got the win with a 6.48/210.77 over George's 6.59/218. The team was at Englishtown for the NHRA Division 1 Opener. Johnson beat Arne Swensen in the first round, with a 6.41/221.67 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, the car broke against Pee Wee Wallace in the semifinals. On May 23, George was at Cayuga for the Division 1 race held there. Both he and Bruce Larson smoked the tires in their first-round race, but Johnson's 7.44/208.81 came out on top over Larson's quicker 7.37/208. Wallace broke a rod on his burnout in the semifinals so George soloed for the win. In the final he faced Stan Bowman. George once again smoked the tires and his 7.78/201.34 finished runner-up to Bowman's 6.69/191. |

Notes: Tripp started the '83 season at Pomona. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.206/244.56. It was unlucky because by qualifying in that spot you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Shumake ran low qualifier Tom Anderson, and sure enough, Tom's 5.960/242.58 put the Camaro's 6.158/245.90 on the trailer. Back on the match race trail, the team ran an ungodly 5.749 at the 64 Funny Cars event at Orange County in April. They also competed at the Fuel Wars event in Fremont, but failed to impress with three straight losses due to tire shake and other maladies. The team’s next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus, where Tripp did not qualify at 6.267/222.22. The team also failed to qualify at the US Nationals where their 6.017/243.90 was the fifth alternate. The team recovered at the Golden Gate Nationals, where a stout 5.858/250.00 grabbed the fourth slot in the eight-car field. Tripp defeated Dale Pulde in round one, 5.901/249.30 to 6.038/240.64, but fell to Billy Meyer in round two, 5.843/229.59 to 6.240/208.81. The team finished their NHRA season by qualifying #11 at the World Finals with a 5.932/247.25. Emerging star John Force got them in the first round, however, 5.809/247.25 to 6.174/179.64. Notes: Photo from the 1994 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 5.080 at Englishtown 94 and 296.34 at Brainerd 94. Where was the 5.069 run? (We had an archived speed of 296.73 from Brainerd 94 - need to confirm). | Bonin started the '94 season on a sour note as his "Smokin' Joe's" Mustang failed to qualify at Pomona and at Arizona. At the NHRA Winternationals his best of 5.52/261.39 was good for the second alternate and at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals, he was first alternate with a 5.58/241.15. |

Notes: Al started the '85 season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.86/245.23. A first-round 5.82 beat Tim Grose's quicker 5.78. He beat Tom McEwen's 5.95 with a 5.94 in round two, and in the semifinals, a strong 5.79/253 beat Rick Johnson's 5.92/249 in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he faced Dale Pulde. Al ran his best time of the meet, a 5.78/227.96, to win over Pulde's 6.02/233. At the Gatornationals, Al qualified #8 with a 5.78/257.43. He slowed to a 6.16/203.16 in the first round, that lost to McEwen's 5.94/246. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Segrini ran 5.90/251.25 to qualify #6. He lost to John Collins in the first round. In May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.99/242.58 but lost when he smoked the tires against Mark Oswald. | Purchased from Lombardo, who ran it at the '84 Finals (JP-1 initial testing?) to a tire- hazing 6.12 best on Saturday, not sure if that was his event best. A Venolia ad in ND after the Winternationals stated that the JP 1 had been tested beforehand. - Joe Moore |

Notes: This car was a Bad Hombre, way ahead of its time. We were always trying something new every time it went to the starting line. - Denny Savage | Best times of 6.09/239 cited in ad to sell the car. 1978 IHRA Champion. - Danny White | Savage started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.277/209.79 qualified #6. In the opening round of competition, his 6.39/214 beat John Collins' 6.55/217. But in round two, an off-pace 6.62/230 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.48/226. The team then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. There Denny's 6.57/230.17 qualified #8. He beat Jim Adolph in the first round, with a 6.54/233.76. In round two, his opponent, Gene Modlin, broke on the line and the "Powers-Steel" car advanced with a 6.79/231.95. In the semifinals, he faced Don Prudhomme, and both smoked the tires. The "Snake" recovered first, and his 6.86/213 beat Denny's 7.75/134.00 to the stripe. Gainesville was their next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. The team continued to qualify well, with a 6.38/216.34 getting the #8 spot in the field. But a troubled 7.55/134.73 in the first round, lost to Shirl Greer's 6.35/230. Traction wasn't the best at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Savage's 7.16/196.50 qualified #2 behind Dale Pulde's 6.88/221. In round one, he improved a lot, where his 6.65/202 beat Pete Williams' 6.89/213 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Frank Oglesby got off the line a little quicker in the semifinals, and his 6.60/218 hung on to win over Denny's 6.59/218. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a great 6.09/212.26 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show. Dennis Geisler broke on the line in the first round, and Savage ran 6.17/215.31 to advance. In round two, a 6.18/217.91 beat Bob Pickett's slightly quicker 6.16/230. He got another solo in the semifinals when Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker," had the car lock up in gear. A 6.22/230.76 advanced to the final. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but the Camaro had a bit more in it than the Arrow, and Savage's 6.21/214.79 got the win over Tripp's hard-charging 6.30/226. From hero to zero. The following week (April 2), Denny failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Division Seven race at Fremont. What's more surprising was that it only took a 6.59 to make the field. The roller-coaster ride continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 with a 6.36/204. A 6.75/201 beat Greer's troubled 13.05 in round one. In round two, Les Cassidy also had problems against him, and Savage advanced with a 6.49/216. Even his semifinal opponent, Williams, could not get in a good run against him, and Denny ran 6.56/225 to meet low-qualifier, Pulde in the final. When it's your day, it's your day as Pulde broke, and Savage got the victory with a 7.12/223. On May 21, the IHRA held its Dixie Nationals at Atlanta. Savage qualified poorly, down in the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Pulde. Crew Chief Dan Geare must have set the car on "kill" as Savage cracked off a 6.26 to beat Dale's 6.35. Denny set Low ET in round two with a 6.24 that sent Greer packing. He had a good race with Dave Settles in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. Savage's 6.34 came out on top over Settle's 6.37. He faced the "Chi-Town" bunch in the final. Savage had the edge in terms of their ET's in competition. But Williams pulled out a squeaker, running 6.45/215 to get the win over Denny's 6.47/226.13. Savage was also credited with Top Speed at 228.42. Savage was in Milan in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.50 but improved to 6.11/229.5 (Low ET and Top Speed) in the opening round over Pete Williams, who had shut the "Chi-Town Hustler" off on the line. Another 6.11 at 217.91 beat Roger Lindamood in the semifinals, and he went up against Tom Anderson in the final. Anderson was no slouch as he had won his semifinal race with a 6.12. But in the final, Tom had a wheelie bar break and went into a huge wheelstand while Savage ran a motor-blowing, on fire, 7.28/134.94 for the victory. Best NHRA ET of 6.120 236 at the Summernationals, which Denny won over Ed McCulloch. | We need to confirm the 6.02 from OCIR. |

Notes: Number four qualifier at the 1978 Winters at 6.224/234.98. | As mentioned, he qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.39/229 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." But in the second round, both he and Tom Prock smoked the tires with Prock's 7.36/217 beating his 7.30/222 to the stripe. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He had won the race in '77 and was hoping to repeat—a 6.30/238.72 qualified #4. In the first round, his 6.43/233.76 beat Prock's 6.46/226. He got no time slip in round two but still won his race against Shirl Greer. His speed on that pass was 234.37. The car failed to fire for his semifinal race against Billy Meyer. It was later diagnosed to a broken lead from the magneto. He was at Bakersfield for the March Meet, where his first-round 6.29/229.00 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.37/232. On April 8th, he was at Seattle for its Funny Car Opener. But once again, he lost in the opening round. This time, his 6.75/222.22 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.41/214. The NHRA Division Six Opener was held in Seattle on May 7. Bonin qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.19/234.98. That was impressive, considering that he out-qualified Don Prudhomme, Tom McEwen, McCulloch, and others. In round one, his 6.44/231.95 beat Jim Dunn's troubled 11.31. But in the semifinal, his 6.41/230.76 lost to McEwen's 6.22/216. Firebird Raceway hosted the next NHRA Division Six race on May 21. Once again, Bonin qualified well, running 6.46 to get the #2 position behind Prudhomme's 6.24. But an off-pace 6.61/223.24 in the first round, lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.48/214. Shortly after that, he was at Edmonton International for its season opener. Eight cars ran two rounds of racing that had the two Low ET cars come back and race for the title. Gordie's 6.56/219.51 over Zeigler held for a final round birth. He faced McCulloch, whose 6.62 was the second-lowest time. The final was close, but McCulloch's 6.54/220 got the victory over Bonin's 6.60/214.28. In June, Bonin was at Cayuga for a best of three match race against Prudhomme. Being on his home turf didn't seem to help as he lost all three races to the "Snake." Don ran 6.3's on every pass while Gordie's best was 6.55/227.84. The other two runs were 6.86/161.29 and 6.84/218.97. He ran much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.29/233.76 qualified #10. But a first-round 6.49/223.32 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/216. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 1st, and a week later (July 9), he won the fourth NHRA Division Six race held at Woodburn. There he qualified #1 with a 6.45. An easy 6.73/229.00 beat alternate Paul Luppy in round one, was followed by a 6.43/231.36 in the semifinal that beat Mike Miller's 6.65/213. He set Low ET and a Top Speed in the final with a 6.40/231.95 that beat Nick Harmon. He barely made the field at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.30/234.37 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, Gary Burgin slowed to 6.40/231, and Bonin's 6.29/236.22 slipped past. But despite running his best time of the weekend, a 6.18/238.72 in round two, he lost to Lombardo's 6.12/236. Portland held its big 32 car show in August. All cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Bonin made a good account of himself, running 6.36 and 6.32 (both at 231)to beat Bryan Raines and Jim Moore. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. He did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals. Bonin qualified #15 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.24/235.60. A quick-leaving 6.28/234.37 beat John Force's 6.22/227 in the opening round, and in round two, opponent Billy Meyer lost a blower on the line, and Bonin's 6.41/233.16 advanced. He was stopped by Tom McEwen's 6.22/234 in the semifinals that beat his 6.29/236.22. |

Notes: In 1972, Bobby was part of a two car team owned by Don Schumacher. Both Don and Bobby drove blue "Stardust" Cudas. Ran 6.648/218.97 at 1972 Tulsa PRA National Challenge. Ran 6.43 at Tri-City. Rowe kicked, butt in '72 when he signed on to drive Don Schumacher's second car. He was busy running 60 dates by the time the US Nationals was run. He set 24 track records along the way. Bobby ran 20 races at Gary, Indiana's US 30 track and won all, but two races. He was a member of the Coke team and won the Coca Coca Cavalcade race at Miami, Florida, on May 13. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.70/222.22 and beat Roger Lindamood in the final. On May 24 he was at Capitol for an Funny Car race and he ran the best times ever for a Funny Car with a 6.38/228.42. He failed to reach the finals there, but did win at Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics two days later (May 26). He set a track record 6.50 at 216.86 in the first round, and in the semifinals, a 6.65/202.04 beat the "Ramchargers." In the final, he ran a 6.68/193.96 to take the victory over Shirley Muldowney. |

Notes: Larry qualified third at the 1972 NHRA Summernationals and in the first round, ran the then quickest and fastest pass in NHRA history a 6.405/228.42 that beat Tom Sneden. In the second round, he beat Sam Miller with a 6.56/225. He lost in the third round to Don Schumacher who won the event. Ran 6.575/218.97 at Indy 9/72. Ran 6.58/222.22 in winning the 1972 World Finals (and thus, the 1972 NHRA Championship). Ran 6.42/222.04 at Gainesville 12/72. This was a beautiful car with purple anodized aluminum interior. Ran one of the first Milodon aluminum motors. Fullerton ran a 6.54 at Sanair. | Every so often, a team gets a dream season. This is what Doheny and Fullerton had in '72. Their early efforts used the SOHC Ford engines before going to the early Hemi. Then when they switched to the 426 they really started to run. The addition of an Ed Pink motor had them able to set at least one end of the track record everywhere they raced from June to August. Their season got off to a slow start and I will pick them up at the Bakersfield March Meet where Fullerton lost to Gerry Glenn in the opening round. They then went to OCIR where Larry set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.78/220.04 in winning the eight-car show over Ron O'Donnell who broke a rear end in the final. Near the end of March, he picked up another win at the Race of Champions event at Fresno. The final OCIR All-Pro event featured a sixteen-car field and in round one, Larry beat Gordon Swearingen, but he lost to O'Donnell in round two. In April, they were back at OCIR for another Funny Car show, but they failed to reach the finals. They did set Top Speed again at over 220. It was late in June when they really got on a roll. On the 25 they were at Warner Robins for the National Open and while they failed to make the final, Fullerton did reset the NHRA ET record at 6.56. After qualifying #3 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.57, as noted above they ran the quickest and fastest speed in NHRA before slowing to an off-pace 7.37/212 losing pass in the semifinals. Of course, his 6.40/228.42 were Englishtown track records. The following week they were at Rockford for the Manufacturer's Meet where one again Fullerton broke both track records., the speed was 221.13. Unfortunately, he failed to make the final round. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, Larry qualified #1 with a 6.54 (Low ET and track record), but in round one, the rear end let go and he slowed to a 6.86 loss to Don Cain's 6.65. They returned to Englishtown for a ten car show in August where Larry's 6.69/216.34 beat Lew Arrington in the opening round and a late off the line 6.62/214.28 drove around Gary Bolger in the "Golddigger" in the semifinal. He faced one of the strongest cars of '72 in the final, Ed McCulloch's Demon. The two had a great race, but Fullerton won with a 6.57 (Low ET) at 218.44 over Ed's 6.62/219. It was then off to Salem, Ohio’s Quaker City for an eight-car show. Larry lasted until the semifinals where Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" laid a track record 6.59 on him that stopped his 6.86. They went to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals and qualified #10 with a 6.57/218.97, but lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. It looked like a sure bet that they would win over an eight-car field at Warner Robins. Larry beat Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 6.77 and he set Low ET in the semis with a 6.60/223 conquest of Roger Lindamood. But facing O'Donnell in the final, the car's transmission got stuck. Ron shut his car down to give Doheny and Fullerton time to get it fixed, but it didn't happen. O’Donnell was awarded the victory. He won the NHRA World Finals at Amarillo, but with the high elevation the times were nothing special. An opening round 6.91/183 beat Robbie Williams and in round two his 6.64 beat Paul Radici. In the semifinals, Larry’s 6.82 took out Preston Davis and moved him into the final against Jake Johnston who had earlier set Low ET at 6.51 in Gene Snow's Charger. Fullerton saved his best for last and his 6.58/222.32 got him the victory over Jake's 6.69/216. The traction was horrible at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet and Larry failed to qualify for the eight-car Ford team even though the "bump" was just a 7.39. He was actually the second alternate for the team. The team was expecting big numbers at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals, but while everyone else stepped up, their times remained the same and Larry only qualified #7. In the first round, he lost a blower belt while doing his burnout allowing Bobby Rowe a single into round two. It was weirder still when the team failed to qualify for the Miami National Open's eight-car show in December. They rebounded nicely the following week at Gainesville for the Turkey Trot race. Fullerton qualified #1 with a 6.68 and then improved to 6.64 in the first round, over Shirl Greer. In the semifinals, a 6.75 stopped Cliff Brown and in the final, he really picked it up to a 6.42/222.04 to stop Paul Smith's 6.60/216 in the "Fireball Vega." That was by far the best season this team had. |
