Notes: If there was one thing you could say about the "Candies and Hughes" team: it was high class all the way. Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes had been running a Barracuda Funny Car for quite a while prior to the '72 season. Their '71 car held the NHRA national record at 6.80. They hired Leroy Goldstein to drive, and he continued into the '72. The team had Woody Gilmore of Race Car Engineering build them two cars for '72 with a few differences in Leroy's car compared to the second machine driven by Hughes. Goldstein's car was supposed to run in match race competition, while Hughes ran the major events. They were not cheap, costing Candies $25,000 each. Goldstein's car had a 122" wheelbase and a Keith Black Hemi with a two-speed Lenco transmission. The car weighed 1,900 lbs. Leroy qualified fourteenth at the 1972 NHRA Supernationals with a 6.517/218.91. In the first round, he improved to 6.470/218.97, beating John Lombardo. He lost in the second round to Ed McCulloch's 6.37/225.56 with a respectable 6.59/189.87. Leroy ran this car on his own for Paul Candies & Leonard Hughes in 1972. He was the driver and crew chief. Leroy qualified at 6.707/206.89 at Tulsa PRA. | Leroy began to drive for C&H at the World Finals in 1971, where he was the #1 qualifier and runner-up to Phil Castronovo (almost the world champ)! But I only show him running at Pomona (6.82/209.79), Gainesville (6.72/221.67), and Ontario (6.47/218.97) in 1972. According to my records, Leonard Hughes drove at Columbus, Englishtown, Sanair, Indy, and Amarillo. Leroy drove for the entire tour in 1973, including Indy. We need to confirm the 228.42 speed, which did not occur on the NHRA trail. - BP | Bill, in 1972, Leroy mainly match-raced. We went to Tulsa for the PRA race, along with many others, instead of Indy, but we didn’t do the NHRA big events except the few you mentioned. We raced the AHRA races, and Leroy ended up being FC Champion in 1972 in C&H car. - Chris Carlton (Goldstein), 1/28/23

Notes: Summernationals Champ one year, runner-up the other. Confirm photo is from 1974 or 1975 (note says 1974 at York). | Liberman started his '75 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He didn't get very far as in the first round, his ailing 8.17 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.48. Jim qualified #1 with a 6.30 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He made it into the second round before smoking his tires and losing to Jim Dunn. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified fifth, but lost early. A 6.33 at Pomona qualified him seventh for the NHRA Winternationals and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, before smoking his tires on a 7.11/166 loss to Mike Miller's 6.50/217. Qualified at 6.306/227.27 at Ontario Finals. Was that in the Vega or the Monza?

Notes: Second Fever car. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. | The second Vette, the yellow one, was a handful as well. It would make it to the end of the track with a stock stroke motor, but was way up on the tires. I remember looking at the black tracks: They were only about three inches wide at the finish line. Both of the Vettes always had handling problems - they got up way too high on the tires. They didn't have enough downforce, due to how close the spoiler was to the rear of the roof - I think. That did produce big mph. We ran over 230 a number of times, with a best ET of 6.37, running a stock stroke motor built - I believe - to approximately the same combination as those that Dale Pulde and Cliff Brown were running. Jungle watched the car run somewhere one day, shook his head and said you guys gotta put a lot more spoiler on that thing. Finally, I asked the guys who owned the car - Tollstam, Trybula, and Marrone - to make a new spoiler for the rear, at least ten inches taller with air dams on the side. I was working on the car by myself at the time, and I had all I could do to get the motor and clutch ready. I dropped the body off at Frank's boneyard, and he said he'd try to get it done. He didn't. Our next race was at Martin. I had another stroker motor in the car, and Ed went backwards into the guardrail at about half track when the car got totally loose. That was the last of the Corvette experiment. When McEwen premiered his Vette the next year (with the newer body style) it had a tall spoiler with air dams. And yes, somewhere in between the US 30 crash and the Martin crash, the car got turned around at Detroit Dragway and slid through the traps backwards. And that's the whole Fever Vette story. - Paul Stenquist

Notes: Hoover started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.22/277.69 qualified #7. Both he and his opponent, Kenji Okazaki, smoked their tires hard in the opening round, and Hoover recovered first with an 8.45/150.72 over Kenji's 11.42. He again smoked the tires in round two and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.16/281. He qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.73, and he lost to low qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Tom ran much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where his 5.24/252.24 qualified #7. Wyatt Radke broke against him in the first round, and Tom ran 5.91/150 to advance. In the second round, his 6.07/160 lost to Hofmann's 5.18/285. Tom had another solid season with consistent runs, elimination wins, and an event victory at the Autolite Nationals. His best times of 5.146/291.35 came at the World Finals.

Notes: Comet roadster with Cammer, C-6 combo. Jack Chrisman got one of four original Logghe-built Comets in 1966. Jack took his proven blown 427 SOHC out of the Chrisman’s Comet to run in the new flip-top car, unlike Nicholson and Schartman, who ran injected Cammers. In 1966, it seemed that the four lightweight Comets dominated the funny car competition like no other cars. Car burned to the ground at New York National mid-1966. Repurchased the old Comet from Dee Keaton to finish the season. Chrisman ran a quickest-ever 8.71 and 184 mph at Riverside during the year. We need to confirm which combo ran that number. | This car would have been just at home at a car show as a race track. The Shedlik built fiberglass body weighed 200 lbs. and the whole car was just 1,870 lbs. Chrisman was experimenting with running direct-drive and C-6 automatic transmission. Jack was at Pomona on April 24 in his Comet roadster, making exhibition passes with a best of 9.06 at 171. At the end of May, he beat Emery Cook driving Don Garlits' Dart two straight at Cecil County. He ran times of 9.35/163.04 and 9.36/168 to win the match. He was still using his old '65 engine from the previous year's car, but he installed a new engine with aluminum heads shortly after. Chrisman won Funny Car at Riverside for the HRM Championships. He beat a fouling Al Vanderwoude in the first round, with an 8.72/184.42 (Top Speed). His 8.74/182.18 beat Bob Davis in the semifinals, while a final round 8.71/179.28 got the victory over Jim Liberman driving the "Brutus" car. On July 2, Jack was at Detroit in his Comet roadster to face Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" car in a best two out of three match race. Jack attempted to warm up before the match but had some problems with his supercharger. He got it straightened out in time for the first race as his 8.59/177.51 beat Dyer, who blew his transmission. Dyer could not repair his car, so Chrisman soloed to win the match, but what a solo it was. He set a new track record 8.50/178.57 for the win. On July 9, he was at Capitol for a best of three match against Dick Landy. Dick was late arriving as his truck had blown a rear end on the way to the match. So, in the first race, Hubert Platt subbed for him in his Mustang. Platt's words were, "maybe he'll foul." Chrisman didn't foul in their race, and he ran an 8.82/181.44 to beat Platt's wheelstanding 9.86/136. Landy arrived with some help in the form of Malcolm Durham's transporter. So, the two lined up for round two of the match. They were having a good race until half-track when Chrisman exploded a supercharger. Landy won with a 9.33/137. Jack was done for the day, and once again, Platt was called in to race Landy in the final race. Platt lost, so Dick was declared the winner of the match. Jack was at York, PA, on July 17 for the NHRA Division One race. He set the S/XS speed record to 175.43. He was supposed to run off against Ed Schartman in the S/XS final, but Chrisman had bearing problems, and Schartman soloed for the win. Notes: John started the 1986 season with the Corvette at the NHRA Winternationals but converted to a new Cavalier by the Gatornationals. But he ran his best ET with the Corvette, qualifying #2 at Pomona at 5.643/260.86. He ran 5.704/252.10 in round one, to beat Ray Higley's 6.35/152. He took out Mike Dunn in round two, 5.750/252.10 to 5.90/250. John beat Dale Pulde in the semis, 5.756/255.68 to a 13-second shutoff. Tim Grose continued a 5.60 pace in the final with a 5.69/236.22 win over John's consistent but losing 5.757/254.95. John got the holeshot, but Dale drove around him by .022 seconds - about eight feet.

Notes: After running a Pontiac for the last few seasons, Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes got the Ford deal when Kenny Bernstein went to Buick for '87. The team started the year with Oswald driving the car to a 5.52/268.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he won a close one over Tom Hoover when both recorded 5.76 (Oswald at 256.33). But in round two, the car overpowered the track, and Mark smoked the tires to 9.51/90.68, losing John Martin's 5.83/209. At Darlington, the team got a lot of photo coverage during qualifying when a blower exploded and lifted the body off the chassis. We needless to say, they failed to qualify. By the NHRA Gatornationals, a week later, a new body was installed. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.59/266.98 (Top Speed). But in the opening round, Mark was surprised by Bruce Larson, who ran a career-best 5.68/261 to beat his 5.74/265.17. More disappointment came at the April NHRA Winston All-Star event held at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show. Oswald ran 5.67/262 twice during qualifying and failed to make the cut (first alternate). The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.73/263.08 qualified #5 and an easy 5.97/250.00 in the first round beat Steve Hodkinson. But in round two, his 5.68/263.26 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.61/264. The following week (May 3), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. On one unofficial qualifying pass, Mark ran 263.62, which would have been good enough for Top Speed of the meet regardless of class if it was official. In the first round, his 5.74/251.39 beat Hoover, but bad luck in the form of a broken blower belt cost the team in the semifinal against Jim Head. The next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.82/256.26, but then it rained, and the race was delayed one week. The team decided to go to Bristol instead for the IHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.64 at 263.15. A first-round 5.80/252 beat Scott Kalitta, while in the semifinals, his 5.77/260 took out Hoover. This put the team in their first final round of '87. Mark's final round opponent was Mike Dunn driving Joe Pisano's car, who had ripped off a 270 mph run in eliminations. Unfortunately, Mark spun the tires in the final and shut off, giving Dunn the win at 5.78/257. A week later (June 7), the Candies and Hughes team was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Finally, things "clicked" for them. Mark qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.75/263.92. Darrell Amberson broke on the line against him in the opening round, and Oswald advanced with a 5.73/247.25. A semifinal 5.57/263.92 beat a tire-smoking Doc Halladay and put the T-Bird into another final. This time, Mark faced veteran Ed McCulloch who had set a 5.51 track record earlier. The two had a great close race, with Oswald's 5.60/265.48 (Top Speed) winning over McCulloch's 5.60. With this win, Oswald led the IHRA Funny Car points standings over second-place Halladay. The team needed a little luck on the NHRA side of things. It didn't happen at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There Mark "only" qualified #10 with a 5.80/252.18. He improved to 5.76/256.33 in the first round to beat John Force's 5.75/250, but a tire-smoking shut-off 12.42/65.82 lost to D. A. Santucci's 5.80/253. The team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Oswald took it easy in qualifying, running 6.04/248.07 for the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Bernstein. Mark was up for it, and his 5.88/238.24 put Bernstein's 5.95/245 on the trailer. Mark improved by two-tenths in round two, where his 5.68/260.26 (Top Speed) beat Al Hofmann. Unfortunately, he lost to McCulloch in the semifinals. In the first week of July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He set Top Speed during qualifying at 266.27. Oswald reached the final by running 5.75/254.23 in the first round over Jim White, who broke, and then he beat Darrel Amberson in the semifinal. This put him into the final against low qualifier Bernstein. The two had a great race, but Bernstein's 5.67/260 beat Oswald's 5.76/254 runner-up effort. RH | Also ran 5.428 and 5.449 at Ennis 10/87 and 5.492 at 87 Keystones. Confirmed 270.43 at Pomona Finals 87. Did the team run 276 somewhere this year? Direct drive or two-speed? Notes: On August 14, Tommy was at Englishtown for its Race of Champions. His car failed to fire for his race against Gene Snow in the first round. He came back out later for a consolation race where he ran 6.42/228.42 (Top Speed) to beat Billy Meyer. In September, Grove was at Maryland International for a best of three match race against Al Segrini, who was driving the "Black Magic" Vega. Unfortunately, Grove lost two straight. The car went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Tommy shut down. In the second race, his 6.61/224.42 lost to Segrini's 6.57/220. At the Eighth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals, Grove looked like he was on his way to the win over the 32 car field. In the opening round, his 6.45/225 defeated Arnie Swensen's 6.76/201. In round two, he set Top Speed with his 6.33/228.42 beating Tom Prock's 6.86/193 in the "Custom Body" car. The third round saw Grove set a new track record with his 6.31/225 taking out Kosty Ivanof's 6.48. Unfortunately, the run came at a cost as Grove burned a few pistons. He could not return for the semifinal, and Ivanof replaced him in the field. Shortly after that, he was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, the rear end broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. He also raced at the Irwindale Team Funny Car Championships late in October. All cars there were to make three runs, with the two Low ET cars scheduled to mee in the final. Grove did not run quick enough to reach the final. Tommy also ran 6.54 at Englishtown and 6.55/229 at the Epping Grande American event.

Notes: Won 1971 Gators in a dominant performance. Quickest and fastest funny car run in history at the time, but by the end of the year, Bill Leavitt lowered the mark to 6.48. | Goldstein was tough to beat driving the "Ramchargers" car in '71. He started the season at Lions on January 10 for the AHRA Grand American. He was the low qualifier of the "seeded" entries with a 7.16. In the first round, he improved to a 6.96/207.85 that beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's late 6.89/206. Another 7.16 at 201.79 advanced when Don Prudhomme broke a rear end. Unfortunately, Leroy broke in the semifinals against eventual winner Gene Snow. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 7.22/205 qualified #11. Goldstein's 7.16/208.81 beat a Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max in the opening round.” In round two, he ran 7.14 to beat Mike Snively in Jim Annin's car. He improved to a 7.09 in the semifinals to trailer Jake Johnston driving Snow's second car. He went up against Butch Maas, driving the "Hawaiian" in the final, and despite running his best time of the weekend, a 7.08, he lost to Maas, who stepped up with a 6.93 for the victory. The AHRA Winternationals was held at Beeline Dragway in Arizona, and it featured a 32 car show. Goldstein was one of AHRA's seeded cars (guaranteed a spot in the show), and his 7.19 qualified #4 among that group. A 7.03 beat Ron Sutherland in the first round, but an off-pace 7.39/209.30 in round two lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.28/195. LaPlace held a four-car show before the Gatornationals, and Goldstein was declared the winner by winning all three of his races. He ran 7.09/192.71 to beat Chris Karamesines' new Mustang, a 7.07/189.47 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster," and he was to race in the final. Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Minick blew his engine on the burnout, and Leroy made an easy pass for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Goldstein dominated the race. He qualified #1 with a 6.80/219.51 and then opened eliminations with a 6.71/220.58 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Larry Reyes. In round two, another strong 6.75/220.44 dropped Dick Rosberg's 6.96/190 in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro. He then ran 13.96/59.32 to win in the semifinals when Phil Castronovo had his throttle stick open and crashed into the guardrail. He went up against Rowe in the final. The "Super Duster” had broken in the semifinals and was unable to make the call. So, Leroy ran 9.28 to pick up the win. In April, he won over an eight-car field at Aquasco. There he ran 7.04/199.10 and 7.09 over Tom Sneden and Pete Hill to reach the final, where he faced Sneden again, who had gotten back into the show on the "break rule." Once again, Leroy beat the "Bob Banning" Challenger. The finals times were 7.06/176.12 to Tom's 7.40/183. The "Ramchargers" were at Edgewater for a best of three match against the track record holder, Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the first race, Leroy ran the track's first "six" while beating Minick. He reset his own record with a strong 6.79 to win two straight. Leroy made a third solo pass when Pat could not run after burning a couple of pistons in their second race. Another win came at Capitol Raceway on April 17. There he came away with a 6.81 track record, and in the final, he beat Tommy Grove's Ford-powered car. The following day (April 18), he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 among the "seeded" cars with a 6.93/207.36. Goldstein got a solo in the first round, but he fouled away a 6.89 against Snow in round two. Goldstein was at US 131 in May for an eight-car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he did reset his own 7.03 track record with his 6.81/210 defeat of Tharp in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Grand American. Leroy beat Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered car in the first round, with a 6.98/190.26, but the Challenger got out of shape in the second round while facing Cecil Lankford. Leroy corrected, and the rear end housing ripped free of the chassis. The body flew off, and the car skidded down the track on its chassis. Things weren't right with the car when it showed up at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Southern Nationals. The new rear end wasn't properly aligned, and the car was torn down and rebuilt in the pits. The work paid off with a first-round win over Paul Gordon driving the "Red Baron" with a 7.01/210.77, but in the second round, the car went up in tire smoke and lost to Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. It was then off to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. Goldstein had won the race the previous year, but he lost to Rowe in the opening round this time. More bad luck hit the team at Martin, Michigan, on July 3 when they had an engine let go, and the car caught fire. The body started to break up, and the air got inside, lifting the entire car off the track for a short distance before the body broke free. Leroy still went through the lights with a 6.93/213! But the team was already mounting their third Challenger body since the start of the '71 season. The team wasn't down for long as on July 18, Goldstein set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.80/215.32 in qualifying #1 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A first-round 6.88/208 beat a fireballing Sam Miller, and in round two, he made an easy solo as the field was short. In the semifinals, Leroy’s 7.02/208 lost to his future employer Leonard Hughes' 6.89/211. Two days later (July 20), the team was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, Goldstein failed to reach the final. The last weekend of July meant just one thing, the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. Goldstein won all three of his races, but his times were not good enough to get him into the final round. He started with a 7.01/204.54 over Gary Bolger's 7.03/209 in the "Golddigger." A second-round 6.91/209.30 beat the only GM-powered car at the meet, Dean LaPole's "King Camaro," and a third-round 6.92/198.67 got around Tom McEwen, who broke. August started with a runner-up finish to Tom Hoover at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A week later (August 7), the team was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Thirteen cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car show. All ran the first-round, with the low eight ETs advancing into round two. Goldstein just made the show with his 7.29 getting him the #8 spot. It did him little good as the car came up ailing in the first round, and lost to "Flash Gordon" Mineo's 7.39. On August 15, Leroy was at York US 30 for the AHRA Nationals. He set the Top Speed of the meet on Saturday night during qualifying with a 6.87/220.58. On Sunday, he began eliminations by beating Johnny Roderiques. But in the second round, the team overpowered the track and smoked the tires, losing to Mart Higginbotham. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for a four-car show on August 22, but he and his opponent, Dale Pulde driving the M/T Pinto, probably made the track promotor cry on their first run. Both had their rear ends break free from the chassis. Then came the AHRA Grandnationals at Marion County, Ohio, on August 29. A 6.97/214 qualified #1, and Leroy lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to Lankford. If the team didn't already have enough bad luck, the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis had more in store. During qualifying, Leroy was making a run with Tom Prock driving Al Bergler's Vega. Prock lost a wheel, veered into Goldstein's lane, and clipped the right rear of the Challenger. The "Ramchargers" team thrashed all night to get the car ready for eliminations, as they had already qualified #8 in the show. All the hard work went for naught as in the opening round, Richard Tharp drove the "Blue Max" to a 6.72/216 to beat Goldstein's 6.93/214. After the Indy race, the team stopped at US 30, Gary, Indiana, for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All cars were to run one race, with the lowest ET car being declared the winner. Goldstein smoked the tires to a 7.51/203 in a loss to Dick Harrell's 6.99/217. Dick would lose his life two days later in a racing accident in Toronto, Canada. We needless to say, Goldstein did not win that race. Before the month was out, Arnie Behling replaced Goldstein as the driver for this car.

Notes: At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at Firebird Raceway, John qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.87/245.23. That was the quickest time he ran that day on his way to winning. A first-round 8.76 advanced when John Martin crossed the centerline and, in the semifinals, an even slower 9.13 got the win when Don Prudhomme also crossed the centerline. In the final, he faced Kenny Bernstein, and after Kenny did his burnout, his reverser failed, giving Collins a solo for the win. John ran 6.66/149.50 to claim his first title of the new year. Collins started his NHRA season at Pomona for the Winternationals. He ran a 5.85/248.48 to qualify #9. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." Collins smoked the tires and lost to Lombardo's 5.66/254. He attempted to qualify for an eight-car show in Atlanta on March 10 but was the first alternate. At the Gatornationals, a 5.89/249.03 qualified #15, and in the first round, he picked up to a 5.76/246.71 to beat Jody Smart. In round two, he ran a 5.74/256.11 to beat a tire-smoking Prudhomme. But in the semifinals, Collins had to shut off to a 10.15 due to severe tire shake. He lost to Bernstein. In April at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, John qualified #14 with a 5.99/243.11. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.02/238.47 before losing to Ed McCulloch in round two. He qualified #15 at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals with a 6.01/243.50. John beat Tom McEwen in the first round with a 5.95/231.60 before losing to Ron Correnti's 5.96/242 with a 6.06/221.45 in round two. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #8 with a 5.83/244. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 5.79/246 before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in round two. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John's 5.97/244.29 qualified #12. A first-round 5.93/241 beat Rick Johnson's quicker 5.90/249, and in the second round, another holeshot 5.98/240.51 beat McEwen's 5.91/245. But in the semifinals, his 5.94/244.96 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.82/241. A week later (June 23), he was at Brainerd for the Crown Auto US Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Collins' 5.82/240.32 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.82/237 in a close one. Later in a consolation race, John returned and ran another 5.82 at 252.80 to beat Lombardo's 6.08/218. John made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #11 with a 5.86/252.38. Both he and McEwen ran 5.86 (Collins at 246.84) in round one, but McEwen got the win light. John set Low ET and Top Speed at NHRA Brainerd at 5.712/257.14 to qualify #1. He finished as a runner-up to John Force at that event. Those were his best times of the year. John went on to win the NHRA Fallnationals at Phoenix.

Notes: Bobby won the AHRA Southern Nationals at Memphis on May 31, running a 7.74/191.31 in the final. On June 28, at Miami-Hollywood, he met Paula Murphy for a best two out of three match race. In the first race, he set a 7.65 track record at 194.38 over Paula, who fouled on an 8.17/189 pass. Wood won all three races with second and third runs of 7.78/191.88 and 7.73/190.66. On July 6, he was runner-up to Arnie Behling when they both ran 7.72 in the final of US 30's Grand Prix of Drag Racing. Bobby's speed was 204. The following day, they ran again at US 30, and this time Wood won with a 7.58/207 (Top Speed) after earlier setting Low ET at 7.49. On July 11, he faced a tough match race against Leonard Hughes at Memphis. The first race went to Wood's 7.59/191 when Hughes got out of shape. He won the second race as well with a 7.61/191.92, beating Hughes' 7.65/202. In the third race, Leonard's 7.71/195 beat Wood's 7.78, but his two wins had already won Bobby the match. On August 3 at Shelby Raceway, he set a new NHRA record at 7.58 while beating Ed Schartman three straight. His times were 7.58/194, 7.54/191, and 7.58/190. Ed's best was a 7.97/181. Still, on the match race trail, he met Sid Foster on August 9 at Palmetto and won three straight with a 7.56/198, winning the first race when Foster fouled on a 7.72/194 pass. Foster's Torino broke and couldn't make the final two races, so Wood ran a 7.54/180 while breaking a blower drive and a track record 7.39 at 201. On September 7, he went back to Shelby Raceway for the Memphis Funny Car 500. He ran a first-round 7.62 when Frank Oglesby's Cougar broke. A 7.50 beat Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norm Charger in the second round. In the final, his 7.45 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.50. He qualified eighth at the NHRA Nationals at Indy with a 7.45/199.89. In the first round, Kelly Chadwick's 7.38/196 beat his 7.55/199.11. At the 900 foot track at Southeastern Dragstrip, they held an eight-car show on September 28. Bobby ran a first-round 6.20 over Scottie Sharp. In the semifinal, a 6.53 beat Paul Aray's Cuda. But a final round 6.15 by Curtis Wasson gave Wood the runner-up spot. Atlanta held its big $20,000 meet on October 12, and Bobby won it all when a final round 7.79/207.38 beat a fouling Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. On October 19, he was at Courtland for a best of three match against Schartman's Cougar driven by Arnie Behling. Wood won all three races with 7.62, 7.64, and 7.66 times. He ran a match race at Dallas on October 26 against Don Garlits' dragster. There was no handicap as the cars ran heads-up. Although Wood got out first on every run, he still lost all three races. As the season ended, he took another win at the Turkey Trot Nationals at Gainesville on November 30. He set Low ET in the final when his 7.30/193.76 beat Joe Petruccelli. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed 7.155/215 in this car, which is highly suspect for this year. Removing those times until further confirmation comes in. | Kendall GT-1 "Rebel." Held NHRA record with this car. - Danny White | Confirmed 7.45 at Memphis.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1993 US Nats (Big Bud Shootout), Indy. Qualified 13th at 5.29/280.72 for Monday eliminations. Improved to 5.24/281.60, but lost to Al Hofmann in round one. (Qualified on the bump 8th spot in the Big Bud Shootout. Lost to John Force in round one). | Bazemore first drove for Johnny West on July 10 at the Parts Plus Nationals at US 131 Martin, Michigan. Four Funny Cars ran at the meet and Whit was declared the overall winner when he beat Jerry Caminito with a 5.65 and Gary Bolger with a 5.61 at a track speed record of 264.90. His next outing was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.77/247.38 qualified #14, but a first-round 5.86/195.99 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.69/248. NHRA's next stop was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. There a 5.51/269.54 qualified #13. Whit lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Bazemore qualified #10 at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.27/284.09. A first-round 5.28/285.17 failed to get past Gordie Bonin's 5.24/281. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen spots available so qualifying was not a problem. Still, Whit ran 5.61/266.98 to qualify #12. A first-round 5.53/270.83 beat Hoover's 5.63/203. In the second round, Bazemore showed his driving skills when his 5.31/275.22 beat Hofmann's quicker and faster 5.26/280. His run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to Cruz Pedregon.

Notes: Frank's first event this year was Indy, where he was the seventh alternate at 6.57/227.84. At the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo, Texas, Frank ran well. He started that race by qualifying #2 for the West at 6.67 and then ran 7.10/142.63 in round one when Joe Jacono did not show. In round two, Al Bergler broke against him, and Frank claimed a 6.72/207.85 victory. He improved to 6.42/225.56 in the semis to beat Shirl Greer's 6.64. He became the 1973 NHRA World Champion by running a 6.39/224.43 to beat Bobby Rowe's 6.38/228.42 on a holeshot. Frank qualified #7 at the Ontario SUpernationals at 6.441/223.32. He beat Billy Meyer in round one at 6.48/219.51 when Meyer lost fire. In round two, his otherwise excellent 6.37/224.43 lost to Dale Emery's killer 6.28/229.59. Where did Frank run 6.29/228.42? Notes: Dean was driving one of at least six Chevy-powered FCs attempting to qualify at Beeline Dragway's 32 car field for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, none of them made the show. LaPole ran well at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified #6, and in the first round, his 6.77/199.11 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.03/177. He came out and ran 6.78/193.96 over Dale Emery's 7.12/162 in round two to show it was no fluke. He still ran well in the semifinals, but his 6.81 lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.64. In July, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. His 7.17/160.42 in the opening round beat Pee Wee Wallace but as the speed on the pass shows, he hurt the engine and was unable to return for the semifinal. The quickest pure Chevy in history. Also 6.40 at St. Louis 1973, but a long-forgotten 6.36 at 217.28 from OCIR. The car broke on the pass and did not make eliminations, so the 6.36 time did not make the press. David Ray provided us with the time slip for proof.

Notes: After driving for Mike Burkhart in '72, Raymond Beadle jumped behind the wheel of one of Don Schumacher's ‘Cudas in '73. He was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals where he qualified #17 in the 32 car field with a 6.71/222.22. A first-round 6.94/176.81 lost to Pat Foster's 6.57/231. Things didn't go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There were 58 cars trying to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Raymond's best was good for the tenth alternate. Early in June he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.85 and in the opening round, beat Charlie Therwhanger with a 6.83/207.85. A second round 6.82 took out Larry Christopherson, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Dale Pulde driving Mickey Thompson's Grand Am, in the semifinals. He went to Tri-City soon after that, for a best of three match with the "King Cobra" which saw Beadle win three straight with times of 7.15/199.55, 6.84/206.42, and a solo 6.76/217.39. Early in July he won the AHRA Grand American race at Kansas City. He qualified #3 with a 6.70 then ran 6.88 to beat Gene Snow. In round two he stopped Cogo Eads with a 6.67. In the semifinals, he was matched against Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" lost oil pressure and had to shut off so Beadle soloed into the final. There he ran Jim Nicoll and both had traction problems, but Raymond's 7.39/223.88 got the victory over Jim's 7.59/189. | He ran 6.67/224.70 at the Lebanon Valley Coke race.

Notes: "Flash Gordon" Mineo had Mike Kase build him a new Vega for the '73 season. It used a 117" wheelbase chassis and cost Mineo approximately $15,000 to build. Gordon built his own engines, and the 490-incher that powered this car used a National Crane Service Crank along with M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons. Howards supplied the cam. A Weiand Manifold supported the Byron Blair-built blower, and an Enderle injection unit flowed the 90% nitro mix. HP was estimated at 1,800. A Lenco two-speed transmitted the power back to a Detroit Locker rear carrying 4.30 gears. Mineo was at St. Paul, Minnesota, for a best-of-three-match race against Doc Halladay, driving Bill Schifsky's Pinto in May. Gordon's 6.93/207.85 beat Doc's 7.00/189 in their first race, and a 6.90/211.76 beat the Pinto's quicker 6.77/209 in the second. Mineo made it three for three in the final race when Halladay had a fuel pump break in their final race, and Gordon ran a solo 7.26/179.35 for the match race win. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All fourteen cars ran the first round, with the eight Low ET cars advancing. Mineo's time failed to advance. Shortly after, he was at Edgewater for its FC Manufacturer's Championships. In the first round, his 6.81/206.42 beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the second round, he lost a header in the lights while running 6.82 in a loss to Tom Hoover's 6.70. He also ran 6.60 at Gary 1973. Notes: At the AHRA Green Valley race, Gordon ran 6.13/234 while fouling against Jim Liberman. He also ran 228.42 at AHRA Green Valley on 4/04/76. Photo from 4th of July weekend 1976. | When the ’76 AHRA Nationals started on Friday, July 2, Gordon Mineo led the sixteen-car FC field at 6.09/225.56, followed by Dale Emery in the new Burkhart Monza at 6.21/214. On Saturday, rain left teams with only one more session, and Mineo remained on top with few changes in the field. On Sunday, hot weather kept Mineo still the leader at 6.09. Prock moved to second ahead of Emery, and Hoover moved to fourth, followed by Snow and Paul Gordon. On Monday, Prock beat Larry Gould, Snow, and Hoover to face McEwen in the final. Prock won with a 6.12/236.84. Prock ran Low ET and Top Speed of 6.08/236.84 against Snow. - Bret Kepner | SS&DI November 1976 issue has a Jim Kelly photo captioned: Gordon Mineo racing Jungle Jim at Green Valley, TX in 1976 at the AHRA Nationals. Notes: Dale failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was one of 45 funny cars to try to qualify. Armstrong ran really well at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #2 with a 6.251/236.22. A first-round 6.27/231.95 beat Dave Condit's 6.45/228. In round two, a consistent 6.25 beat Gary Densham, who shut off, and in the semifinals, he improved to a 6.17/242.58 (Top Speed) over Craig Epperly, who broke. In the final, he lost to Dale Pulde, but it was still a strong showing. From there, he went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran his first-ever "five," a 5.981/241.93, to qualify #4 and to become the sixth member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. A first-round 6.047/234.37 took out John Force, but he hurt some parts and could not show for his second-round match against Pulde. Dale was the first alternate at NHRA Atlanta with a 6.175 (speed not reported). In May, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Eastern Regional, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did get Top Speed with a 234.99. On June 21, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.253/229.59 qualified #13 in the field. He lost to future employer Kenny Bernstein in the first round, 6.18/238 to 6.238/226.70. He made it into the final at the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.995/231.95. In the first round, opponent Rick Johnson broke, and Dale ran an easy 6.235/209.78 to advance. In round two, a 6.148/229.59 beat Fuzz Miller's 6.32/224. In the semifinal, a 6.180/231.36 beat a tire-smoking Mike Dunn. In the final, he had lane choice over Don Prudhomme, but Armstrong blew an engine, and his 7.082/125.52 finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.07/241. At the NHRA Grandnationals in August, Dale qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.059/236.22. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Armstrong advanced with a 6.256/231.36. He lost to Dom Prudhomme in the semifinals, 6.33/227 to a 10-second shutoff. Dale qualified #5 with a 6.22 in the eight-car show at the PHR Championships. He beat a fouling Mike Dunn with a 6.08/231.36 and Tom Hoover in the semis with a 6.19/225.56. So again, Bernstein and Armstrong ran against one another, this time in the final. Unfortunately, Dale hurt his engine in his semifinal win and could not run, so Kenny soloed for the win. Dale was the third alternate at Indy with a 6.124/232.88. He qualified #15 at Fremont for the Golden Gate Nationals at 6.134/233.16 but shut off against Craig Epperly in round one. He had an excellent World Finals performance, however. Dale qualified #1 at 5.939/238.72. In found one, he ran 5.937/230.17 to be Al Segrini's 9.94 shutoff. He set Low ET of the Meet in round two with a 5.891/235.60 over Raymond Beadle, who shut off to a 12.31. Gary Burgin ended Dale's day in the semis with a 6.05/234 when Dale broke. The 5.891 was one of the first 5.80 passes in the sport and garnered plenty of notoriety.
