Notes: This was definitely, 24-year-old Epperly's best season in fuel FC racing. The rookie was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Craig qualified #11 with a 6.22/233.16. His off-pace 7.20/132.74 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.15/224 in the first round. The team then went to Elroy Airport Drag Strip. This was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was poor. Craig qualified #1 with a 6.99/211.76. He beat Richard Day in the first round with a 7.27/205.46. Rod Hynes got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, so Epperly's 7.65 advanced. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, but Craig smoked the tires and shut off to 9.86 while Jim got the win with a 7.01/216. Craig qualified #4 at Bakersfield at 6.324/231.95 and, in round one, beat Ed Moore with a 6.16/227.84. In round two, he advanced with an off-pace 6.59/202.24 when Gary Ritter had problems, but in the semifinals, something in the driveline broke, and Dale Armstrong got the win. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 6.20/225.56 left him as the third alternate for the show. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.42/215.31 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but a 6.52/221.67 in the first round lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.17/238. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Another Western Regional race was run at OCIR on May 9. Craig qualified #4 with a 6.30/229.79. He made it to the final by beating John Lombardo with a 6.47/220.04 and Tom McEwen with a 6.17/227.27. Unfortunately, crew chief Amos Satterlee dialed in too much power in the final, and Epperly smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.01/167.91 that lost to final-round opponent Prudhomme's 6.56/227. His next race was on May 30 at Bandimere Speedway for another NHRA Western Regional event. In the opening round, his 6.64/151.51 beat Dan Lexa, but in the semifinal, his 6.62/220.58 fell to Gary Densham's 6.60/207. Then came his big win at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He had never even run there before. A 6.22/231.36 qualified #8, and he beat Tripp Shumake's 6.36/222 in the first round with a 6.27/224. He caught a good light in round two, and his 6.35/227 held on to win over Tom Anderson's better 6.32/228. In the semifinals, John Collins' 6.34/232 fell to 6.29/210. That put him into the final against the defending winner of this race, Raymond Beadle, who was driving the "Blue Max." Both ran 6.21 in the final (Craig at 231.95), but the win light came on in Epperly's lane. It was an amazing upset. After such a great race, he was surprised himself when he failed to qualify on June 27 at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. He was the first alternate at 6.61/217.92. The bad luck stayed with him the following week (July 4) when he was the first alternate for the eight-car field at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. His 6.48/215.31 missed the 6.42 "bump." Craig did finish in the NHRA top 10.

Notes: At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tripp qualified on the "bump" with a 6.28/238.06. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round before breaking in round two and losing to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he ran 6.10/242.58 to qualify #14. A 6.11/238.72 in round one beat a tire-shaking Tim Grose, while in round two, his 6.27/237.46 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.31/230 in the "Blue Max." He fell off to a 6.75/174.75 in the semifinals that lost to Pulde's 6.33/223. He was at Green Valley on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional, where he qualified #5 in the eight-car field. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Jim Dunn. Jim smoked the tires and shut off while Tripp advanced with a 6.92/221.67. In the semifinals, his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.25. Tripp won the Southern Nationals. His 5.989/226.70 in Atlanta was the 8th and final entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club for funny cars. It qualified him #2 behind Beadle's 5.96/230. His 6.10/233.76 beat Paul Smith, who shut down early in the "Entertainer" in the opening round. His opponent, Shirl Greer, smoked the tires in the semifinal, and Tripp ran 6.20/226.59 to advance. He faced Kenny Bernstein in the final, and Shumake's 6.07/233.76 got the victory over Bernstein's 6.08/243. Tripp qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.26/224.43. In round one, his 6.36/222.22 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.27/224. Shortly after that (June 27), he was in Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. A 6.55/214.80 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.34/229.60 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Tom Ridings' 6.28/225. The best NHRA national event speed was 242.58 at the Gatornationals.

Notes: Pulde always ran well at Pomona and continued to do so at the '86 NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 5.848/250.69 and improved to a 5.691/250.00 in the first round while beating Ed McCulloch's 5.827/240.64. A 5.777/244.56 advanced into the semifinals when Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian" for the first time, crossed the center line and ran 6.313/159.85. Dale smoked the tires in the semifinals and shut off to a 13.096/61.09 loss to John Force's 5.756/255.68. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.794/255.97 qualified #4. Rain came and postponed the race from March 16 to the 23rd, but Pulde was scheduled to run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and left Gainesville to run the IHRA event. He was probably happy that he did as he won the race. He qualified #2 and made his way to the final against Paul Smith, whom he beat with a 5.68/254.23 (Low ET and Top Speed). Dale was the number one qualifier at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.747/257.14. At the NHRA Winston Finals with the RATT War Eagle, Pulde Qualified #9 with a 5.737/260.56. Pulde would face #1 Qualifier Johnny West in Round 1, running 5.809/250.62 to defeat West's 5.909/248.89. Pulde faced #13 Qualifier Jim Head in round 2, where Pulde won with a 5.868/248.27 while Head drifted toward the retaining wall and lost at 7.676/106.87. In the semis, Pulde faced #7 qualifier Billy Meyer, where Pulde Smoked the tires & watched the eventual runner-up Meyer streak away to the win at 5/712/246.71 as Dale's 10.096/76.69 followed. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Finished #3 in NHRA points in '85. - Mark York

Notes: The "Hawaiian" did not have a perfect season performance-wise early in '75. Wilcox started the season at the New Year's Day race at Fremont. He failed to make the final but had an interesting first-round race with Don Prudhomme when both smoked the tires. Don won with a 7.41 to Norm's 7.59. At the Irwindale Grand Premiere, he qualified #11 in the sixteen-car field but broke on the line in the first round, giving Bob Pickett the win. Norm failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with best times of 6.77/178.21. At the Irwindale Funny Car Championships, Wilcox won his first-round race easily, and in round two of the 32 car show, his 6.76 beat Bob Pickett in the "Lil' Demon." He lost to Gary Burgin in round three when he shut down with problems. The team ventured to Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and Wilcox qualified in the bottom half of the field (#11), but once eliminations started, they did alright. Norm's 7.08 in the first round beat Vic Cecelia's 7.97. In the second round, a 7.12 advanced over a troubled John Luna at 19.29, but he lost to eventual winner “Jungle Jim" Liberman in the semifinals. Tri-City Dragway held its seventh annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships, and the "Hawaiian" was there. All eight cars were to make three runs. It was not a good day for Norm. An off-pace 7.97 in his first race lost to Vic Cecelia’s 6.96. In round two, he blew the tires off of it in a loss to Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse," and he lost to Denny Savage, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," when he smoked the tires once again. Shortly after that, the team was at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show. Eventual winner Jim Nicoll beat Wilcox in the first round when the "Hawaiian" got out of shape, and Norm clicked it off to a 9.40-73.40. The next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where Norm qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show and lasted until round two before losing to Tom Hoover's 6.56/199 with a 6.62/208. The team ran 6.58/208.33 bests there. In July, the team was also at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, but Norm failed to reach the finals. Late in July, things started to improve. They were at Portland for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Wilcox ran a great 6.35/213 in his opening race over Roger Lindamood's 6.91. This was a race where all cars ran three races, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. His ET got him into the final against Jerry Ruth, but those gremlins crept in - the Monza broke on the line giving Ruth a single for the win. The Funny Car Spectacular followed up that race in Edmonton, Alberta. Once again, all cars made three runs. Norm beat Twig Zeigler in his first race before the car failed to start for his match with Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round two. But he was able to come back and win his third race over a tire-smoking Terry Capp. The team reverted to the wrong direction in performance at the Seafair Funny Car Championships in Seattle. It was a 32-car field with the two Low ET cars from three rounds of racing meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" went up in smoke in its first race while losing to Zeigler, and in round two, the car broke on the line against John Collins. An 11:00 pm curfew kept the team from running a third race. We needless to say, Wilcox failed to make the final. It was disappointing to many to see Norm's name among the non-qualifiers at the PHR Championships, but the car just wasn't running as it should have been. Just how far off the team was shown at the IHRA Nationals run at Dragway 42 in West Salem in mid-August. It was a sixteen-car field, and Norm qualified #13. But sitting ahead of him were some surprising names: Donny Plunkett, Rodger Hamrick, and Jackie Price, just to name a few. Not to take anything away from these guys, but their budget was next to nothing compared to that of car owner Roland Leong. Norm lost in round one to Dale Pulde. The following week (August 24), Wilcox finished runner-up to Gene Snow at the IHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis. At the NHRA US Nationals, Norm's 6.429/226.70 qualified on the "bump." He ran a nice 6.279/218.44 to upset Gary Cochran's 6.95/216 in round one, but he fell off to an 11-second run in round two that lost to Bob Pickett's 6.39/229. However, the team got it figured out by the World Finals in Ontario. Wilcox was the number two qualifier at 6.179/232.55, right after Don Prudhomme's 6.15/241.53. He improved to a sterling 6.164/218.97 to defeat Jake Johnston's 6.31/220 in the first round. Unfortunately, the team did not show for round two [I think having suffered a horrendous fire - BP], sending Denny Savage and the Chi-Town team on to an eventual final round finish.

Notes: After starting the year driving the Super Duster, Bobby took the seat in the Hawaiian, replacing Butch Maas. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet, Bobby lead the Dodge team (6.78) in qualifying and eventually set Top Speed of the meet with 6.75/224.43 run. He won 2 of the 3 rounds contested, losing only to Jim Dunn's Low ET of the meet 6.70 while running a very respectable 6.76.

Notes: Jody ran 5.86/256.84 to qualify #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He might have qualified higher, but he had a blower explosion on his last attempt. He lost to John Force in the opening round of eliminations. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.773/247.93 qualified #7. A off-pace 7.35/116.36 in the opening round lost to John Collins. The following week (March 24), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field but lost in round one. In April, he was one of twenty FC drivers attempting to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.99/246.44 qualified #13. In round one, he improved to 5.95/224.32 to beat John Force's 6.01/251. He got a little quicker in round two with a 5.92/241.41, but it wasn't enough to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.80/249. Best NHRA national event times for 1985 were 5.773 at Gainesville and 256.84 at Pomona Winters. Did Jody run 5.68/258.62 away from the NHRA trail this year?

Notes: Low qualifier at Sonoma 1993 (setting a new track record). | Mineo, 61, and four others, including three members of his family, died in September 2006 as the result of a high-speed boating accident on a Texas lake. News accounts reported Mineo's craft collided with another boat during a 100-mph poker run. - RT | Photo from Ennis 93. - RO | Mineo started the '93 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.88/187.57 was good for the second alternate spot. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, he qualified #14 with a 5.55/253.95. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with an off-pace 6.14/163.01. He broke in round two, giving Jim Epler a free ride into the semifinals. Gordon qualified #6 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.20/257.06. A troubled 6.14/166.29 beat an equally troubled Gary Densham at 7.40/104 in round one, but in round two he lost a motor against Brent Fanning and the resulting fire destroyed the Firebird body. He was OK. He had a new body installed in time for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.28/282.04 qualified #7. In the first round, Paul Smith fouled against him and Mineo advanced with a 5.68/222.99. He lost to Freddie Neely in round two.

But in the first round, Dave's 6.44/223.32 lost to John Lombardo's 6.41/214. At the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race, a 6.47 qualified #4. But the car had issues and was unable to run in eliminations.

Notes: Prudhomme started the year with his venerable Arrow but debuted this Plymouth Horizon in April at OCIR for the 64 car show. In the opening round, Don ran a track record 5.96 at 238 to beat John Force. He made it into the final against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." The "Snake" got crossed up and shut off while Colson ran 6.48 for the win. On April 20, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.94/238.72, but rain interrupted the race, and Don could not run on the rain date since he chose to go to Baton Rouge instead for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He would've been better off at Fremont since his best of 6.21/235.60 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge. On May 17, he was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.03/238.09. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.18. He then went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. Prudhomme ran well, hitting a 6.04 in the semifinals over Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the final, he set Low ET with a 5.97 at 235.60 over Colson's 6.70/229. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.21/231.95 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Colson. Don improved to 6.08/222.77 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round two, advancing Billy Meyer into the semifinals. He did not compete at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, choosing to run the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas instead. Don qualified #1 with a questionable 5.92. He then ran 6.19 and 6.28 over Kenny Bernstein and Tom McEwen to reach the final, where he faced John Collins. A final 6.18/229 gave him the victory over an up-in-smoke Collins at 7.24. He was back on the NHRA tour for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown in July. Don qualified #3 with a 6.02/237.46. An opening round 5.99/240.64 beat Bernstein, and he made an easy single in the second round when Dale Pulde was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Prudhomme faced Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max" in the semifinals, and Don's 6.05 beat the "Max's" ailing 6.85. Once again, he found himself in the final. There he faced and beat Meyer's 6.58/192 with a 6.10/238.05. Prudhomme was back at Union Grove in July for the NHRA Division 3 race. While he didn't reach the final, he did set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.15. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42. This time, the "Snake" really had to work for it. He qualified #2 with a 6.20 behind Pulde's 6.12 in the "War Eagle." A first-round 6.23 beat Gary Burgin's 6.44, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Len Imbrogno could not show. The final came down to Pulde and Prudhomme. Don got the win with a 6.26, stopping Pulde's out-of-shape run. August started with Prudhomme winning the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. The "Snake" did not have the quickest car (Tom Hoover did at 6.05), but he was the most consistent, running 6.15 and 6.14 (at 232.55) to reach the final. There, he faced Billy Graham, and a 6.13/231.93 gave him yet another win over Graham's 6.25/219. He did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was runner-up to McEwen at the Funny Car Nationals at US 131. There, his final round, 6.31/206.89 lost to the "Mongoose's" 6.17/233. On August 18, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Don was the only 5-second qualifier with a 5.95 (Low ET). In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover's 6.52 in the "Pacemaker" Firebird. Don was reinstated when officials found out that Hoover was driving two cars. It didn't do Prudhomme much good as he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bill Spevacek. He had problems with his race car transporter on the way to Indianapolis and had to be towed in. He was still able to run a 6.07/234.37 to qualify #10. In round one, he beat Colson with a 6.12/234.98, but a second-round 6.27/226.75 lost to Meyer's 6.18/234. Ran 6.07/236.22 NHRA Indianapolis 9/80.

Notes: Don started the '80 season by winning the OCIR Super Bowl race. He beat Kenny Bernstein in the final. At the AHRA Winternationals, he again reached the final, but this time, he finished runner-up as Tom Hoover beat him. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.10/240.64 qualified #5. Prudhomme suffered a rare first-round loss to Gordie Bonin. On March 9, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Prudhomme set Low ET in qualifying #1, and he ran another 6.04 at 233.16 in the semifinals while beating Dale Pulde. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, and the "Snake" boiled the hides while Jim took the victory with a 6.35/231. Everything went Don's way at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #1 at 5.98/238, then ran 6.12/235.60 over Roy Harris, a 5.94/234.98 over Al Segrini, and a semifinal 5.93/239.36 single when Pulde developed an oil leak and shut off on the line. Don's 5.93 set a new NHRA record. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." It was the "Snake's day as his 5.98/238.09 beat Beadle's 6.17/231. His new Horizon debuted soon after this in April at OCIR.

Notes: Colson qualified #2 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a career-best 6.00/240.64. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. At the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, a 6.14/234.98 qualified #5, but he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Nick Harmon. His season ended on a high note when he won the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. He had announced his retirement shortly before the race and then went out and qualified #1 with a 6.11/238.09 (Top Speed). He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round. In round two, his 6.21 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.30, while a 6.41/231.36 advanced in the semifinals when Roy Harris crossed the center line. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was running well, setting Low ET at 6.06. But in the final, he had trouble and shut off, giving Colson's 6.28/230.17 the victory. Ron did well in the NHRA points standings, finishing third for the season.

Notes: This car debuted at the Epping WWCS in August 1980. Its maiden pass was during Saturday night qualifying on a racing surface that had been wet for an hour while the rain was still falling. Classic Roy Harris! Photo from Indy 9/80, where Roy qualified #9 with a 6.067/238.72. He faced low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max in the first round." Luck was on his side, though, as Beadle smoked the tires in their race, and Harris advanced into the second round with a 6.28/236.22. Tim Grose smoked the tires in his second-round race, and Roy ran 6.31/233 for the win. His luck ran out in the semifinals when he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open on September 14. Roy qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.40 lost to Dick Rosberg's 6.19 in the "Fighting Irish" Firebird in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals. In October, he was at Fremont for the Winston Record Challenge race. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Prudhomme in the semifinal, where his 6.35/214.28 fell to the "Snake's" 6.08/220. Harris ended his season at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #7. He beat Tom Ridings in round one, and in the second round, his 6.21 beat Rob Williams' 6.29. He got out of shape in the semifinals and crossed the centerline while racing Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." Roy's Indy 6.06 was his best NHRA national event ET of the year, and an earlier 240.64 from Pomona was his best speed in the Arrow).

Notes: LOW and mean. The OCIR 6.01 made Beadle the second quickest Funny Car in the sport after Prudhomme's 5.98 at Ontario 1975 and 5.97 at Indy 1976. | Beadle started the season at the OCIR Opener in January. The car ran great, hitting 6.18/228 in the first round, over Tommy Ivo and a semifinal 6.13 to advance to the final. There he beat Ed McCulloch with his track record 6.01 at 234.37. It was an excellent start to the year. He then went to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 with a 7.61. The track was terrible, and Tom Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.73. But the "Blue Max" crew got "her tuned up" in the first round, where his 6.52/223.88 beat Jim West. Beadle set Low ET in round two with a 6.48 to beat Steve Harris, but in the semifinals, the rear-end let go, and Beadle lost to eventual winner John Collins. Then it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18/232.55 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.14. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, with a 6.15/231.95, and a round two 6.27 beat Hoover's quicker 6.19. Another good light in the semifinals made his 6.41 a winner over Gordie Bonin's 6.40. This put Beadle into the final against Prudhomme. It looked like the "Blue Max" faltered in the final, but it was really just the "Snake" running a great 6.03/247 for the win while Beadle had to settle for the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Raymond ran 6.31 to qualify #3. He improved to 6.28/228 on a second-round solo when Al Bergler broke, but he lost to Bonin in the semifinals. The team did not run the IHRA Winternationals, and while the "Max" did not reach the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals, Beadle was the low qualifier. Raymond was also the low qualifier at the AHRA Springnationals with a 6.57/218.44. He beat Jim White and Tom Hovland before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinals. The team was at Union Grove for the Drag Racing Olympics race on May 29 and 30. The show was run with 22 cars running the first-round, with the four lowest ET's advancing into the semifinals. Beadle's 6.33 was good enough to advance, but he lost to McEwen in the semis. The following day (May 30), they did it again, but the "Max" failed to qualify for the semifinals this time. Surprisingly, they skipped running the NHRA Cajun Nationals in favor of the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, as the races were run on the same weekend (June 5). It was an eight-car field, and Beadle qualified on the "bump" with a 6.59/220.59. But the car came alive during eliminations, running 6.35/229.01 in the first round, to beat Graham and a 6.46/210.78 over Prock's 6.53/213 in the semifinals. He faced Collins in the finals, and Raymond's 6.53/223.52 got the victory over John's tire-smoking 7.13/181. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 and lost to Prudhomme in the first round. Beadle won the second PDA race held at Fremont on June 23. There he stopped John Lombardo in the final. He then won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. He qualified #2 with a 6.31 and a final round 6.43/191 beat Gordon Mineo's off-pace 7.95/103. The team skipped the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown as the weekend before the team used up three aluminum engines. The team got things sorted out, and they ended the month of July by winning Portland's 32 car show on the 31st. Beadle had set Low ET, and in the final, his 6.35 beat Mike Miller's 6.39. Beadle could not get the "Max" to run a number at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. He smoked the tires and shut off in both his races losing to Bonin and Hank Johnson. A week later (August 19), the car ran right as Beadle won the Division 6 final at Portland. He beat Rich Rogers, driving the "Green Elephant" in the opening round with a 6.43/211.76. A semifinal 6.39/209.30 beat Jim Dunn, and he faced the Low ET car of Bonin in the final. Beadle got out first, and his 6.34/227.84 hung on to win over Bonin's slightly quicker 6.33/225. He then went to Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Beadle qualified #3 in the eight-car field and then proceeded to run 6.45/212.26 over Bob Pickett and a motor-saving 7.29/141.06 solo when Bonin failed to hear the call for the semifinals. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Beadle's 6.53/214.73 finished runner-up to Hoover's 6.40/215. After the team's northern swing, they returned to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where a 6.22/226.13 qualified a disappointing #14. A first-round 6.20/228 by Tom McEwen sent the 6.45/200.44 of Beadle packing for home.

Notes: Oglesby was at Darlington attempting to qualify for the eight-car field for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.83/205 best was good for the first alternate. He got into the show when #8 qualifier Murf McKinney had some problems and could not race. Frank took his place in the show and nearly pulled off the upset. In the opening round, Oglesby's 6.96/211 beat Bob Gottschalk's 7.18. A semifinal 6.60/218 beat Denny Savage's 6.59/218. He went up against Dale Pulde in the final. It wasn't much of a race between the two as while Frank was slipping and sliding to 12.39/65, Dale was winning with a Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.35/229. At the AHRA Ozark Nationals, Frank's 7.34/172.08 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He improved to a 6.95/197 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get past John Collins, who beat him with a 6.87/191. Shortly after that (July 23), he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, his 6.62 best (first alternate) failed to qualify for the eight-car with a 6.59 "bump." Frank was in Atlanta in October for the IHRA Winston Nationals. He lost to eventual winner Pete Williams driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. Frank did not race in any NHRA national events in 1975. We need confirmation of the 6.40/238 times. | Spring 1977 SS&DI: John H. Johnson, Jr., son of Ebony Magazine Publisher John Johnson, temporarily threw in with Oglesby on his car. No national tour or even updating the car, probably local expenses, but this is still a highly unlikely venture. I saw a picture of the car. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.48/272.14 qualified #7. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.50/274.55 and a second-round 5.45/273.63 beat Jim White's 5.50/272 in the "Hawaiian." But in the semifinals, his 5.41/273.22 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.31/272. He qualified #3 with a 5.33/274.64 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and an opening-round 5.27/282.57 stopped Jim Murphy. But he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Del Worsham. He ran really well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 5.28/282.39 qualified #3, and he beat Gary Densham in round one. In round two, Mike Dunn's 5.46/251 lost to Ed's 5.30/278.29. He fell off to 5.40/276.32 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Oswald. He faced Force in the final for the money. Unfortunately, McCulloch smoked the tires and shut off to 6.11/159.37 while John picked up the win with a 5.21/278. Ed continued to qualify well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.29/272.06 got the #3 spot. He beat Gary Bolger in round one, with a 5.40/270.43, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the second round. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Once again, Ed qualified #3, this time with a 5.31/276.24. He beat Freddie Neely in round one before smoking the tires and losing to White in round two. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Ed slipped to #4 in qualifying with a 5.32/276.07. In the first round, Paula Martin lost an engine against him, and Ed advanced with a 5.54/256.70. A second round 5.52/267.77 beat Al Hofmann. But 5.5s were not going to get the job done, and, in the semifinal, Ed's 5.56/273.05 lost to Hoover's 5.48. The seventh race of the season was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. McCulloch returned to his #3 qualifying spot with a 5.34/272.06. He beat Murphy in round one, with a 5.48/271.73, but a round two 5.41/259.44 lost to Force's 5.35/267. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he "only" qualified #7 with a 5.48/265.01. In the opening round, he beat Martin's 5.69/245 with a 5.57/258.69, but he lost to eventual winner White in round two. He then made a stop at Kansas City International for its Summernationals. Ed set Low ET there at 5.62, and he reached the final against Force. The two had a good race, but John's 5.68/261 beat Ed's late leaving 5.65/257.50. Back on the NHRA trail at Englishtown for the Summernationals. McCulloch ran 5.26/271.82 to qualify #4. He stopped Martin again in round one, with a 5.40/266.58. But a second-round 5.47/263.08 lost to Worsham's 5.34/272. Worsham would go on to win the race. McCulloch was way overdue for a win. It almost came at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43. His speed on the run was 257.80. He beat rookie Len Seroka in round one, with a 5.82/252.31, and a second-round 5.55/256.19 beat Densham's 5.69/218. In the semifinals, his 5.59/257.14 trailered Hofmann at 5.76/253. This put Ed in his second NHRA final of the year. He faced Mike Dunn, who had been running just about a tenth quicker than Ed was throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Mike's 5.47/257 got the victory over Ed, who tried to make up the difference and fouled away a 5.54/255.82. Ed's best NHRA times were 5.237 from Maple Grove and the 282.57 from Phoenix.

Notes: Frank started the year by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #2 with a 5.976/241.28. He ran his slowest time of eliminations in the first round, a 6.08/236.84, but it was still enough to beat Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. In round two, Hawley picked up to a 5.93/239.36 to beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme, while another 5.93 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced low qualifier Tom Anderson in the final, and the "Chi-Town" car churned out yet another 5.93 at 249.30 (Top Speed) to get the victory. Tom lost with a 6.02/241. In March, he won the next NHRA race as well, the Gatornationals. Frank qualified #9 with a 5.93/208.81, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Mark smoked his tires in their race, and Hawley advanced with a 5.90/245.90. In round two, his 5.93/241.93 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.19/213 in the "Blue Max." In the semifinals, Frank ran 5.94/240.65 to beat Mike Dunn's 6.06/233 in the "Hawaiian." The final was between him and Dale Pulde. Dale ran a good 5.98/242 but lost to Frank's 5.92/242.58. The "Chi-Town Hustler" team won its third NHRA race in a row when Frank won the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.95/243.90, but in the first round, Oswald fouled against him, and he advanced with a 5.99. He got past Ken Veney in the semifinals and met with Al Segrini in the final. Hawley got the victory with a 5.99/240.64 over Segrini's 6.07/214. The team then went to a UDRA meet at Byron and won that as well, setting a track record 6.02. They did not compete at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but the "Chi-Town" car was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.95/234.98 qualified #3, but in the opening round, Hawley's 6.03/235.60 lost to Anderson's 5.97/240. The team then traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Hawley qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.98/238.09. In round one, a controversial 5.716 beat Segrini, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Don Prudhomme. It should be noted that NHRA listed Prudhomme's 5.91 from qualifying at Low ET. (Event winner Mark Oswald actually got a 5.621 in round one, quicker than Top Fuel Low ET of 5.662 by Richard Tharp). Photo from booked in Funny Car show at GVRC WWCS meet in April of 1983. Hawley won the show and set Low ET at 6.03. | The car was repainted in Team Strange colors in mid 1983. - Danny White

Notes: Tom set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.880/238.09. He had been driving the other Funny Car drivers nuts during qualifying. Anderson had run a 6.17/206.89 on Thursday, which was only second to Gary Burgin's 6.09/238. Then he came out Friday morning and ran his great 5.88/238. No one else was able to break into the "fives' until Frank Hawley finally ripped off a 5.97/241 late in qualifying. That was the only other car to run a "five" during Pomona's qualifying. He made it into the final by beating Tripp Shumake's 6.15/245 in the first round, with a 5.96/242.58. In the second round, a 6.11/242.58 beat John Force, and in the semifinals, he ran 5.97/236.84 to beat Gary Burgin's 6.18/234. Tom came up against the "Chi-Town Hustler" with Hawley behind the wheel in the final. Anderson ran a 6.02/241.28 that lost to Hawley's 5.93/249. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Anderson had a bad fire during qualifying. The team stripped the car down to the bare chassis and made repairs. He then went out and ran 6.01/240.69 to qualify #14. In round one, he ran a 6.04/239.36 to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.19/209. Burgin had problems and shut off in the second round, and Tom advanced with a 6.00/235.60. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Dale Pulde's tire-smoking 7.95. Atlanta held an eight-car show later in March, and Tom was there. He qualified #3 with a 6.37/177.16 and picked up to a 6.14/226.70 in the first round over Shirl Greer. He lost in the semifinals. A month later (April 17), he was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, it was an eight-car field, and this time he qualified #5 with a 5.94/239.99. He lost to low qualifier John Lombardo in the first round, where he fouled and shut down to 8.95. Things didn't go very well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A best of only 6.39/170.13 failed to qualify for the eight-car show. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tom qualified #11 with a 6.07/206.89. An opening round 5.97/240.64 stopped Hawley's 6.03/235, but in round two, he slowed to a 6.29/243.24 that lost to Burgin's 6.26/233. Anderson followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 6.04/239.36 qualified #5. The problem is that qualifying fifth in an eight-car show means you had to run the low qualifier in the first round. Prudhomme qualified #1, and the "Snake" defeated him in the opening round. Considering the budget, these guys had compared to everyone else. This team was more than impressive. The NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown was a perfect example. With all the "high-dollar" sponsored cars around them, Tom's 5.91/244.56 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and slowed to a 6.19 in the first round that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.85/249, but the team was able to qualify and run so well against much more heavily funded teams was noticed by all. Anderson went to Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals at the end of July. It was an eight-car field; his 6.14/230.76 qualified #6. He cut a great light in the first round that saw his 6.11/238.72 hold off Ken Veney's quicker 6.08/221. In the semifinal, a 6.16/220.58 beat John Force's 6.40/193. He went up against Hawley in the final. Frank was the only Funny Car here that had run in the "fives." Anderson hoped for the best, but his 6.34/177.51 lost to the "Hustler's" Low ET and Top Speed setting 5.91/244 in the final. Hawley continued to upstage the team at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. Tom's 5.91/237.46 qualified second to Frank's 5.86/247. In round one, Paul Smith broke, so Tom made an easy solo. But in round two, his troubled,8.19 lost to Mike Dunn's 6.25 in the "Hawaiian." Tom's best times of the year happened at Indy at 5.829/249.30, and a runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Notes: Lombardo began the year at Pomona in the Number 8 spot with a 6.140 240.84. John defeated John Force to win the 1983 NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Force smoked the tires almost immediately in the final but recovered and went after Lombardo, who began to spin the tires about 200 feet down the track. The two raced to the finish line together, with Lombardo taking a narrow 6.32 to 6.32 victory. - NHRA | Best ET of the year at 5.880 at the World Finals at a best NHRA national event speed of 243.24. Where did John run 249.30? Set Low ET and #1 qualifier at NHRA Atlanta at 5.933. | As mentioned, John qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.12/232.55 beat Tom Hoover's 6.33/220. In round two, he smoked the tires to a 6.21 that lost to Tom McEwen. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, John's 5.93/238.72 qualified #8. in the opening round, his 6.01/236.84 beat Tim Grose's 6.05/235. But in the second round, his 6.05/239.36 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.02/241. He qualified #1 at Atlanta for the eight-car field at the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.93/232.55. He then beat Tom Anderson before losing to Al Segrini in the semifinal. Lombardo failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.17/231.93 failed to crack the 6.08 bump. Things went better at Columbus, where his 6.08/238.72 qualified #13. Still, a first-round 6.10/236.22 fell to Segrini's 6.03/241. He also suffered a first-round loss at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where Don Prudhomme got him in round one. John qualified #10 there with a 6.02/240.64. Shortly after that, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Those eight-car fields were tough to qualify at, and this one was no different. He ended up as the second alternate with a 6.31/227.27 best. He was disappointed at Indy, where his 6.02/234.37 best failed to qualify for the all-five second show at the NHRA US Nationals.

Notes: Ron set both ends of the NHRA national record in July when he ran 6.41/227.84 at Tri-City Dragway, Saginaw, Michigan. Although her name doesn't appear on the car, several period publications mention Myrna Gelfand as the owner. On the front spoiler of the L&M photo that I've included you'll notice it reads "Super Jewess presents the Kosher-Kuda," which is a reference to her. Also, Ron had a Division 7 competition number for much of 1972. He moved back to the Midwest by the end of the year and had a Division 3 comp number in 1973. Myrna Gelfand was Don Cook's sister. She was the money behind his funny cars. Gelfand was her married name. She was portrayed as a mystery woman handing out money to funny car teams at the time. The Cuda disappeared in Chicago. There was a repainting no one wanted to discuss. It turned up in Australia with a crushed roof, never to be seen again. - Norman Hechtkoff | Ron had been driving Funny Cars since they began. This was probably his best ride. His season in the car started in Jan at the second OCIR All-Pro race. It was a tough eight-car field to qualify in and O'Donnell made the show. Unfortunately, he lost to Leroy Chadderton driving the “Hawaiian" in the first round. Things went better at the third OCIR All-Pro where his 6.75 qualified #2 and he beat Sush Matsubara driving the "Pisano-Matsubara" Vega in the first round, with a 6.78. In the semifinals, he used a 6.71 to beat Dave Beebe's 6.84 who was driving Ray Alley's car. He went up against Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega in the final and Pat unleased Low ET and Top Speed to win with a 6.58/224 over Ron's 6.72/218.97. Another runner-up finish came at OCIR on March 11. There both he and Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse" had run 6.78 in their semifinal races. The final looked like it was a close one, but the "Damn Yankee" broke a rear giving Fullerton an easy victory. He competed at the final OCIR All-Pro where a sixteen-car field was featured. An opening round 6.92 beat the "King Rat" and in round two he got around Fullerton. But a 6.87/220.04 in the semifinal lost to Gary Burgin's 6.66/220. In April, Ron set Low ET at OCIR's Funny Car Bash with a 6.75, but he failed to reach the finals. He was at the NHRA Division 3 Opener where he qualified #4 in the eight-car field. An off-pace 7.33/191 lost to eventual winner Al Marshall's 6.63-in the first round.

Notes: Danny Ongais had gained fame as a top-ranked dragster driver. Mickey Thompson was well-known as a racer, track operator, and car owner. In 1969, the pair debuted a new lightweight transition style chassis Mustang. Pat Foster built the blue 427 SOHC-powered Mustang and a red twin that he drove himself. The team was awesome that year. They won many national events with the car, and Ongais ran a 6.96/204.73 at Kansas City. The team only lasted two years. Foster crashed in Dallas, and Ongais went on to different rides by the end of 1970. The state-of-the-art Mustang was outdated by 1970 due to the new, lighter, dragster-style chassis other teams were debuting. Confirmed 7.264/203.61 at Indy for the best NHRA National event times. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Dennis Doubleday). Video link cites 6.96/207 bests for 1969. Confirmed 7.22 at Rockingham. | This was the car to beat in '69. Ford money, one of the best crew chiefs/mechanics ever in Amos Satterlee who knew his way around the complex SOHC Ford motor, and master handler Ongais behind the wheel. This was the second car in a two-car team put together by Mickey Thompson. This was the blue car while Pat Foster handled the red one. The cars debuted at the AHRA Winternationals in primer wearing only a large Mickey Thompson decal on the doors. The cars showed promise right off the bat, with Ongais qualifying ninth and beating Don Schumacher in the first round, and Ray Alley in the second before losing to Dick Harrell's 7.75 in the semifinal. At the NHRA Winternationals, the tricky Pomona track gave the team some problems, failing to qualify. Ongais rebounded nicely by qualifying third with a 7.62/176.47 at the second OCIR All-Pro on February 9. He was on his way to a sub 7.4 run in the first round, when his engine let go at the first MPH light. Still, his 7.60 at a coasting 160.42 beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.69/191. The team was unable to run the semifinals, and Jim was reinstated. The first win came the following week, on February 16, in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. He beat Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 7.59/189.47, and in the semis, a 7.88/193.96 beat Schumacher. He was paired up against his teammate Pat Foster in the other MT car in the final. He set both ends of the track record in the final with a 7.51/199.11 taking the victory. Then came the Bakersfield March Meet, where a 7.63 qualified #1. His first-round 7.80/196.07 beat Dave Beebe's 7.97/185 in the Super Chief. Tom McEwen set Top Speed while losing to Danny in the semifinal, with a 7.78/196.73 losing to the Mustang's 7.70/195.65. In the final, he met Rich Siroonian and won again with a 7.56 (Low ET) at 193.54. Another win came the following week on March 9 at the Sears Point National Open, where he again had Low ET (7.62) and Top Speed (195.64). This time the team gained fans due to Mickey Thompson's sportsmanship. Ongais was to face Marv Eldridge in the final, but Marv's Corvette lost fire on the line. Thompson signaled to Danny to kill the engine in his Mustang. So, while Ongais waited, Mickey helped Eldridge's crew refire the Corvette. Once it started, Danny refired and promptly beat him for the victory. The crowd roared their approval. He again ran well at the HRM Championships on March 16 at Riverside by qualifying #1 with a 7.60. He improved to a Low ET of the meet 7.50/180.00 over Roger Wolford in the first round, but the car broke a blower manifold while taking the win. The team tried hard to repair for round two, but time ran out. Wolford was reinstated with the break rule in effect. At the final OCIR All-Pro race on March 29, a 7.58/193.96 qualified #1. An even better 7.53/192.70 beat Randy Walls in the first round. In the semifinal, both he and Schumacher ran 7.71, but Don had crossed the centerline, advancing Ongais into the final against Charlie Allen. A blown transmission ended Danny's chances for a win. On April 13, Irwindale held an eight-car show, and once again, Ongais qualified on top of the heap with a 7.48 that held for Low ET. A first-round 7.63/184.80 beat Walls and Clyde Morgan lost a transmission against him in the semis, giving Danny a single into the final. A 7.88/191.08 beat Steve Bovan's 8.19/182 Camaro in the final. A sixteen-car show was held at Irwindale on April 26, where Ongais qualified #1 with a 7.48/181.08. He set a 7.30 track record at just 177.86 over Bob Pickett in the first round. A 7.47/191.48 beat Ray Alley in round two, and another 7.47 over Morgan put him in the final. In the final, a 7.37/193.54 beat Mike Van Sant's 8.01/181 in the Invader. At the second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open at OCIR on May 3, a 7.45/191.88 qualified #1 on the four-car Ford team. The 7.45 was also good for Low ET of the meet. In the first round, a 7.55/192.30 beat Siroonian's 7.61/194. Mike Van Sant took a win over the Mustang when Ongais lost a motor on the line in round two. With a new engine in place, a third-round 8.20/161 beat the Psycho. The two lowest ET cars raced for the overall win at this meet. In the final, he faced Siroonian again, and a 7.88/188 took the win as Rich's 'Cuda broke. Drag News reported that Ongais drove to 7.10 and backed it up with a 7.12 in California. This was done using a new kind of oxygen injection system that had caused the team to go through 37 engines. It was not reported at what track these times were run, but it was in early May. On May 18, he was at Kansas City for a four-car, round-robin race. Danny won by setting a 7.37 track record at 196 to beat Ron O'Donnell in Don Schumacher's 'Cuda in the first race while a 7.42 beat Norm Weekly driving Chris Karamesines' new car. He beat the "Assassination" in his last race with a 7.52. Ongais finished runner-up to Gas Ronda at an Funny Car show at Fremont in May. On June 8, he qualified second with a 7.64 at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He won the race when the Low ET and Top Speed of the meet (7.52/202.70) car of Leonard Hughes fouled against him in the final. Danny motored to a 7.78 for the win. The team had a major blow at the NHRA Springnationals; the MT teams qualified one and two with Pat Foster's amazing 7.35 (track record) at 199.55 leading while Ongais followed with a 7.47/189. Foster's car veered into Gerry Schwartz's car in the first round, and crashed, killing Gerry and totaling both cars. Ongais went on to win the race running 7.77/173.07 and 7.64/190.27 in the first two rounds. In the semis, Ray Alley fouled, and Ongais ran a 7.57 to advance to the final against Tom McEwen. McEwen broke a rear end in the final, and a 7.63/191.89 gave Danny another win. On June 21, it was on to Lions for the AHRA Grand American Championships. Ongais reset the AHRA Funny Car record to a 7.35 in qualifying, as well as Top Speed of the meet at 198.97. He beat Larry Fullerton in the first round, with a 7.36/196.07 and a 7.40/193.96 beat Gordon Mineo in the semifinal. He was to meet Mike Van Sant for the money, but the race was never run due to the late hour. At Irwindale's Fourth of July race, a 7.44 qualified #1, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.39/198.66 over Van Sant's 7.60/194 in the Invader. In the final, he beat Fullerton with a 7.43/192.70. The next day (July 5), he went to OCIR for the second annual Nitro Championships, where he qualified #1 with a 7.52, ran a first-round 7.40, beat Ronda's 7.84/195 with a 7.49/191.48 in round two, and in the semis a 7.62/200.00 beat Clyde Morgan's 7.78/187. In the final, he met Fullerton again. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet (7.35/200.44) won the race over Larry's 7.88/183. The following week saw more of the same for the competition. At Irwindale's Race with a Reason on July 12, Ongais won again. About the only new news was that he didn't qualify first. He ran a first-round 7.50/178.75 solo pass when Leroy Hales broke on the line. A 7.42 (Low ET) at 192.72 beat Van Sant in the semifinal. Dave Beebe, driving John Mazmanian's 'Cuda, broke in the final, and Danny ran a 7.78/188.66 for the win. Right around this time, the Mustang was reworked with the SOHC motor moved back farther in the chassis and raised slightly. The first time out with the new configuration was on July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Championships. A 7.63 qualified the team second to Beebe's 7.56. Both cars made their way to the final, with Beebe hitting a meet's best of 7.38 along the way. Danny was running 7.60s, with the best being a 7.61. In the final, Ongais picked it up to a 7.55/193.54 but lost to Beebe's 7.45/205. This was the first time the Mustang was outrun in competition since the Winternationals. On July 26, the team ran at the Irwindale Funny Car Open, and Danny got beat again. He qualified second and beat Warren Gunter, who had driveline problems in the first round. But in the semifinal, Ongais shut off with handling problems, and Gas Ronda's 7.76/192 advanced to the final. At the three-day Super Stock Nationals, Danny won Saturday's Funny Car race (even though the last rounds were run on Sunday). He beat Ed Schartman with a 7.75/193. He ran a match race against Bob Manion at Kansas City on August 17 and won all three races with a 7.56/191.08 best. AHRA held their World Championships at Green Valley on August 24. The MT team was there, running a first-round 7.65 over Fritz Callier's 7.82. In the second round, he lost a motor in the eyes while losing to Siroonian, who was back in uncle John's 'Cuda. Siroonian's chute failed on the run, and his car was damaged. At Bristol for the All-American race, AHRA held an Funny Car race in qualifying for the actual show that was to be run the next day. In that race, Danny singled with a 7.68/171.75 in the first round, before beating Jim Maybeck with a 7.93 in the second round. He fouled against Ronnie Runyan in the semis. The next day for the actual race, he again made it as far as the semis where both he and Jim Maybeck ran 7.89, but Jim got there first. Ongais took his biggest win of the year at the US Nationals. The team went through three engines in qualifying before getting in a 7.306/201.79 for #4. He followed the 'Cudas of Hughes, Schumacher, and Siroonian. He improved on his time with a first-round 7.264/201.34. In the second round, a 7.380/191.08 beat Kelly Chadwick, and in the most crowd-pleasing race of the Funny Car Eliminator, met Bruce Larson in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Bruce fouled away a 7.420/201.78 while Danny's 7.276/203.61 got into the final against Siroonian. In the final, Siroonian fouled away a 7.246/204.08 to let the Mustang take a 7.476/195.65 victory pass. The following week, on September 14, at a match race at Kansas City, Danny made four runs: a 7.21, 7.11 twice, and a 6.96 to become the first Funny Car in the sixes. It was controversial, though, because it was run at Kansas (later known for questionable times), and the fact that the car never again got near the sixes. The car usually ran 7.20s as best times. On September 20, Danny showed up at OCIR during the Division 7 points race and reset the NHRA Funny Car records to 7.37/198.67. Two other funny cars were also trying for the record, Siroonian and Charlie Allen. A week later (September 27), the team was at Rockingham for the AHRA US Open. On Saturday, AHRA decided to hold an eight-car preliminary Funny Car show. In the opening round, Danny's 7.28 defeated Butch Hicks, driving the "King 'Cuda." He then won his semifinal match to meet with Gene Snow in the final. If there had been a question of had the rest of the Funny Car troops caught up with the MT team, it was answered here as Snow's 7.13/213 easily covered Ongais' 7.22/201.34. The next day, Ongais ran 7.28 in the opening round for the actual race before his 7.34/195.65 lost to Mart Higginbotham's 7.33/199 in round two.
