Notes: Woody built Doug Thorley RE Javelin. Started with an AMC engine, then a 392, finally a late model 426, as shown in the photo. On May 3, Bob was the first qualifier at 8.42/172.28 for the AM team at the OCIR Manufacturer's Funny Car Open. Unfortunately, the car broke and was unable to race. The car was a total loss after getting airborne and crashing down at 200 mph at Irwindale on May 17. Bob was OK. |

Notes: Jim was the first alternate at NHRA Pomona with a 6.39 (no speed reported). He ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.40/224.32 in round two over low qualifier Dave Condit who got out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, the car broke against eventual winner Simon Menzies in the semi-final. At OCIR's 12 annual Nitro Championships in July, Jim qualified #1 with a 6.22. He went to the final, beating Pat Foster when both had sub-par runs, but Dunn won. Jim's next national event was Seattle, where he had a great race. He qualified #4 at 6.10/236.84. In round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein with another 6.100/238.98 to 6.24/238.09. Round two saw Jim take a 6.14/232.55 decision over Tom Ridings at 6.49/184. He upset Don Prudhomme in the semis, 6.17/223.32 to 6.26/223. Jim shut off to a troubled 12.11/64 in the final, giving the win to Raymond Beadle at 6.22/230. Jim was the 7th alternate at Ontario (times not reported). Photo from Indy 1980. | At a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race, John Force beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Tom Ridings got the Joe Pisano ride for 1979. The team qualified #13 at the Winternationals with a 6.368/231.36 and then lost a close first-round race to the team's former driver, Pat Foster, in the Super Shops car, 6.251/234.37 to 6.383/226.70. In April, Tom was at OCIR for its big 64 car show. He set Low ET at 6.15, but in the final, his 6.88 fell to Raymond Beadle's 6.28 in the "Blue Max." Their next NHRA event was Seattle, where Ridings claimed the bump spot at 6.30 with a booming 238.09 mph. He won a thrilling 6.240/235.60 to 6.240/238.72 first-round battle over Tom McEwen but fell to Jim Dunn in round two, 6.140/232.55 to 6.490/184.80. The team qualified #10 at the Ontario Finals at 6.415/224.43 and claimed a 6.679/223.32 to 6.723/230.76 upset over Kenny Bernstein in round one. In round two, John Force won a close but off-pace battle to put them out, 7.238/217.39 to 7.271/205.01. We need confirmation of a 6.00 ET the team reportedly ran this year. Where did that occur? I recall hearing about it but do not know where it was run. |

Notes: Tom had a great season in '86. The season started on a bad note when his 5.93/212.26 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He wasn't at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he made sure he was noticed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.82/253.52. A 5.86/247.93 beat Ray Higley in the first round, and in round two, a 5.86/249.03 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. He faced low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, and McEwen was up to the task. He left on time and beat Bernstein's quicker 5.65/255 with a 5.677/256.11. That put him into the final with Ed McCulloch. Unfortunately, Tom's Corvette broke, and the "Ace" soloed for the victory. He qualified #2 at the IHRA Bayou Nationals but failed to reach the finals. He didn't have a very good outing for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His best of 6.11/238.47 in qualifying put him in the #15 spot, and he lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. McEwen qualified second to Mark Oswald, and in the opening round, his 5.78/255.68 advanced over Scott Kalitta, who crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, his 5.77/257.87 lost to Kenny Bernstein's track record 5.58 at 246. He sure ran well at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, where he found himself in the winner’s circle. It started with a 5.70/257.87 that qualified #3. An easy 5.99/242.06 advanced past the first round when John Martin failed to show. In the second round, his 5.78/249.16 beat Tim Grose's 5.89/239. In the semifinals, a 5.85/236.71 beat Oswald's 5.94/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. That put him into the final against Billy Meyer. Meyer smoked the tires and Tom roared to a 5.78/249.16 for the victory. He continued to run well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where after qualifying #4 with a 5.77/252.17, he made his way to the semifinals before having problems and shutting off to a 6.43/143.28 loss to Bernstein's 5.72/255. The following week (June 22), he was runner-up to Oswald at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 29. McEwen qualified #6 with a 5.85/240.77 and a first-round 5.82/233.28 beat Jim Head, but in the second round, he went up in smoke and lost to Johnny West's 5.79/259 in the "Hawaiian." Milan, Michigan, was his next stop on July 6 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.99/227.27, and once again, he smoked the tires, losing to McCulloch in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.69/254.66. He got payback by beating McCulloch in the first round, but in round two, he had problems and shut off against Oswald. A week later (July 20), he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He ran well, qualifying #2 for the show, but failed to reach the finals. His best NHRA times were the 5.677 from Gainesville and 257.87 at the Cajuns. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Photo from Milan, Mich., 1986. |

Notes: Dean started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9 with a 5.20/282.04. He beat Richard Hartman in the first round, with a 5.24/283.01. Things didn't go as planned in round two. He beat his opponent Cruz Pedregon as planned with a 5.22/285.26 beating Pedregon's 5.25/283, but in the shut down area, Dean had trouble getting his car stopped and he ended up hitting the hay bails at the end of the track and wrecking the Firebird body. For the semifinals, they installed their old Probe body. Unfortunately, a 5.25/283.46 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.11/278. At the Quality Care Nationals, Skuza qualified #10 with a 5.28/280.63, but he fouled away a 5.34/261.32 in the first round, against eventual winner John Force's 5.24/282. |

Notes: Custom piece. Rear engine futuristic funny car. Car was based on AMT's anticipated entry into the world of small mass-produced cars for the public. Basically, a kit car was planned, but it never got off the ground beyond the Piranha prototype. In essence, the car was a Catch 22 - too radical to be deemed a funny car and too slow as a top fuel dragster. The car was ill-handling. Astute match racers would rely on their water-cooled entries to burn the car down, resulting in its loss. However, when all went well, no flopper, even the Nicholson Comet, could touch it. Per Chris Martin, Walt Stevens went a confirmed 8.71/187 at Irwindale. Also, 182.64 per Drag News. Was the 8.295 Walt or Connie Swingle (who did run an 8.29 in October 1966)? | Walt was at Tulsa on July 3 for the NHRA Division Four race. He ran a series of exhibition runs, with the best pass being an 8.93/180.58. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Drag Racing List has 5.845/250.69 times from Maple Grove national event. | Larson attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.31/168.53 failed to make the field. In March he faced off with Dominic Santucci for a best of three match race at Englishtown. Larson won two straight running times of 6.28/230.76 and 6.17/238.09. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.28/225.79 failed to qualify. He competed at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.00 before losing in the semifinals. Bruce got into the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.25/220.26 held the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 6.02/237.21 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Magazine Nationals and Larson was there, running a 6.03/233.76 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier (5.62) Kenny Bernstein. Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.00/144.69 that lost to Kenny's 5.75/254. In late June he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car show so qualifying wasn't a problem. Bruce ran a 6.12/240.12 to qualify #11. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Billy Meyer's ailing 9.22/91. On July 2, Englishtown held its Funny Car Spectacular. Larson lost to West's 5.78/258 in the first round, with a 6.31/184.04, but he got back in on the "break rule." So in round two he ran Roy Harris, but Bruce had problems and shut off to a 9.10-86.04 that lost to Roy's 6.39/180. He was back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals where he ran a 5.99/243.11 to qualify on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover. On August 3, he competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #8 with a 6.20 in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. The following week (August 9), he was at the US Funny Car Nationals where he ran a 6.19/236.22 to qualify #6 in the six car show. He lost early. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 6.07/237.59 was good for the sixth alternate spot. He also attempted to make the show at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he had problems and failed to qualify with a 7.32/118.18 best. In the season long NHRA points chase he finished #19. |

Notes: Woody Gilmore chassis and Don Kirby body. The 6.44 was a Maple Grove track record set in June. Ran 6.57 at Gainesville, 6.67 at Columbus, 6.60 at Englishtown. Al debuted the "Black Magic" Vega at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. It created quite a stir as it was awarded the "Best Appearing Car" and the crew was awarded "Best Appearing Crew." The car could run as well as Segrini proved when he ran 6.77 to qualify #7. He improved to 6.56 in his first-round win over Gene Snow, but in the second round against Don Schumacher, the car went into a wheelstand and Al shut off. He was at Charlotte Speedway on March 31 for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Al qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show on the 1/8 mile track with a 5.05. He set Low ET with a 4.41/163.93 to win in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Kenny Safford driving the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he qualified #2 with a 6.69/201.34 behind Ron Colson's 6.62/214.79 in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He did reach the final at Englishtown's Super Sunday race in May, but he lost to Raymond Beadle. At the NHRA Springnationals, he just made the show qualifying in the #15 spot. He advanced past round one when Leroy Goldstein shut off in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. A second round 6.67/209.79 lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.56/207. The following week (June 16), Segrini was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There, he qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.56. He soloed to a 6.48/216.34 in round one, when Frank Oglesby was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In the second round, his 6.45/221.13 covered Bob Parmer's 6.59/219. He picked up to 6.38 in the semifinals to beat Bill Leavitt. This put him into the final against Billy Meyer. A final round 6.43/228.42 (Top Speed and a new track record) finished runner-up to Meyer's 6.34/223. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 22. Al qualified #2 in the eight-car show behind Ivanof. He beat Tom Prock in round one, with a 6.54, and he advanced easily in the semifinals. His final round opponent was Jimmy King in the "King and Marshall" Satellite. Segrini set Low ET with a track record 6.44 at 221.67 (Top Speed) in the final to win over King's 6.62/201. |

Notes: Short 118" wheelbase to fit in panel truck hauler, ran 5.90s everywhere, 5.80s everywhere else, won NHRA championship first year trying. His 5.969 at the Winters was half of the quickest side-by-side race in history (Ray Beadle, 5.975). He also ran 247.25 at Brainerd (half of the fastest side by side in history with Al Segrini's 240.64). Ran 5.95 at Martin, MI, PHR race. Ran the 5.82/247 in the "Big Bud Shootout" at Indy (we need confirmation of the third digit on the ET). The best confirmed NHRA national event times were 5.823 Low ET at the Golden Gate Nats and 247.25 in the final round while winning at Brainerd. Photo from 1983. |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, Michigan, Popular Hot Rodding event in 1982. Kenny started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best of 6.20/236.22 failed to qualify, and he was third alternate for the show. He continued to have problems at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where he was second alternate with a 6.18/221.12 best. He qualified #5 with a 6.26 in the eight-car field at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but he failed to reach the finals. The next NHRA meet was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta that had an eight-car field. Kenny and crew chief Dale Armstrong had nothing, but problems and the best they could get the LN-7 to run was 12.19. Obviously, they failed to qualify. As bad as they were doing in NHRA events at the time, in IHRA, they scored a victory at the Pro-Am Championships on May 2. Kenny still didn't qualify so well, running a 6.21 for the final spot in the eight-car field, but he advanced past the first-round when Dale Pulde lost an engine on the line. In the semifinals, Bernstein picked up to a 6.06 to beat Al Segrini and move into the final where he faced John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting" car. Kenny repeated his qualifying time with a 6.21 to take the win. At the end of May, he showed at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show and once again he failed to qualify. He qualified for his first NHRA event of the year at the Springnationals in June. His 6.04/236.84 got the #5 spot in the sixteen-car field. He almost made it to the finals as well, by stopping Tom McEwen in round one, with a 6.24 and in round two, beating Don Prudhomme. But his 6.32/223.88 in the semifinals lost to Segrini's 6.27/236. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.98 in the eight-car show, but he lost in the first round, to Gary Burgin. On June 27, Bernstein was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. He beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round, with a 6.17/226.13, but in the semifinals, he got out of shape, hit the guardrail, and coasted across the center line. He was OK. Things started going a bit better for the team by July when they showed up at Sanair in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 6.01 qualified #1, and he ran 6.08 and 5.99 to reach the finals against Prudhomme. The "Snake" won with a 6.03/245 over Kenny's runner-up 6.13/233.16 effort. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.93 qualified #4, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Prudhomme again. The next race on the NHRA tour was the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere. The "Budweiser King" qualified #3 in the eight-car show and in round one, he beat Garth Widdison. In the semifinals, he was late off the line and Billy Meyer's 6.19/223 beat his quicker 6.17/233.76. Kenny set a track record at US 131, Martin, Michigan, when he qualified #1 with a 5.90 at 247.25 for the PHR Championships. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Brainerd was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Segrini. Al won their race with a 5.97/238 over the "Budweiser King's" 6.25/196.30. |

Notes: Craig Epperly began driving for Joe Pisano in May. At the second Division 6 race at Baylands, they set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.01/223.88. Craig lost early, falling to Tom McEwen in the first round. Epperly qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.13/229.00. He lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. At the Mile High Nationals, the team qualified #2 with a 6.205/231.36. Epperly defeated Tom McEwen in Round 1, 6.275/230.17 to 6.412/234.37, but fell to a Raymond Beadle holeshot in Round 2, 6.251/226.69 (.548 RT) to 6.192/230.17 (.619 RT) – a mathematical difference of four feet at the stripe! The team then entered a rough patch in NHRA competition with DNQs at Brainerd, Indy, and Fremont (6.126/229.00, 6.130/238.09, and No Time, respectively). Epperly bounced back at the NHRA World Finals at Orange County with a 6.002 at 247.25 (Top Speed). He lost in round one to Don Prudhomme, 6.03/241 to a shut off 11.19/66. Epperly drove the HB Gold car one last time at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, and Al Segrini drove for Joe there. Gorgeous candy apple red, black car. Details from Joe Moore. Notes: Dick Harrell, known to his many fans as Mr. Chevrolet, was forced to abandon his trusty semi-hemi and adopt Chrysler elephant power for his final season. He had stayed with Chevy through 1970, knowing he would not be able to win any major meets, just because he thought his fans expected brand loyalty. In the short 1971 season that followed, that turned out not to be a problem. The fans stayed with him. Harrell was killed on September 12/1971 on a strip in Toronto, Ontario, when a lightweight front tire came apart at over 200 mph, sending him into a utility pole. Just two days earlier at US 30 Dragstrip (Gary IN) he had participated in a benefit race to defray hospital bills for racer Larry Reyes, who was himself seriously injured in an earlier crash caused by the failure of a front tire. - RT | In July at Deer Park, Harrell set a 6.95 track record. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Shumake started the season at OCIR's Super Bowl, where he ran second Low ET with a 6.77 and was supposed to face John Lombardo for the title, but breakage kept him from running, and Raymond Beadle took his place in the final. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.58. As attested by his first-round win over Tom Hoover, Traction was poor with a 7.08/211 beating Tom's 7.23/202. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Tripp qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.157 (at 234.37) held for Low ET. A first-round 6.59/218 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.33/212. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. A 6.23 (Low ET) at 232.55 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he raced Simon Menzies' alcohol burner and beat his 7.37 by almost a second with a 6.40/226.13. A second-round 6.46/224.43 beat a crossed-up Bob Pickett, and in the semifinals, he ran 6.36/231.36 over a tire-smoking John Collins. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and, for a change, the "Snake" was the underdog as Tripp's times in eliminations were about a tenth better. Sure enough, Don tried too hard, and he smoked the tires and shut off in the final while Tripp ran 6.75/218.44 for the victory. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.37/237.46. A first-round 6.40/232.55 beat Ed McCulloch, but in round two, his 6.44 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.37. A week after that (March 19), Tripp was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. His 6.52/207.37 qualified #1, and as the field was short, he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with a 9.89/91.64. Tripp was late off the line in his semifinal race against Tom Hoover. He tried so hard to catch Tom he set speed with his 6.78/224.43 losing to Hoover's 6.80/205. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he did not get a speed on his qualifying run, but his 6.07 was second only to Prudhomme's 6.00. A 6.23/227.84 defeated Gary Cochran, who lost a blower belt in the opening round. Bryan Raines ailing 6.70/200 in the second round, lost to his 6.44/223.88. He got another easy pass in the semifinal when Dave Condit broke. Tripp still ran 6.22/230.76. He faced Denny Savage in the final, and Savage was tough. He had also won his semifinal race with a 6.22 and qualified #3 with a 6.09. Savage came through in the final, running 6.21/214 to win over Shumake's 6.30/226.70. In April, he competed at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.50/222.77, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the opening round of eliminations. Both smoked the tires, and John's 6.51/231 lost to Shumake's 6.54/226.70. Another tire-smoking 6.92/200.44 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.52/227. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.74 and another 6.74 at 219.50 beat Randy Lackey in the first round. Tripp then set Low ET with a 6.71/218.76 in the semifinals to beat Hoover's close 6.73/216. He faced Gene Snow in the final, and a 6.79/218.44 won the race over the "Snowman's" 6.90/217. On May 13, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.23 qualified #5, which meant he had to run low qualifier Prudhomme in the opening round. It wasn't much of a race as the "Snake's" 6.04/240 easily covered Tripp's 6.38/231.95. He made up for that by winning the NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater on May 21. It wasn't much of a race, as only two FCs showed. His final round 6.48/223.32 (Top Speed) beat Steve Stephens there. Tripp had earlier run 6.44 in qualifying for Low ET as well. His next stop was at Bandimere on June 3 for the NHRA Division Five race. His 6.72/213.27 in qualifying stood for Low ET and Top Speed. With the field being short, he got a solo in round one. He crossed the centerline and was disqualified in his race against Danny Pickett in the semifinal. I loved his words after the fact, "After the third time I crossed the centerline, I figured that they must have saw me, so I shut off." At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.22/226.70 qualified #7. He improved to 6.15/232.55 in the opening round to beat Al Segrini's 6.29/223, and a 6.22/226.13 trailered Burgin's 6.40/230 in round two. But despite running a strong 6.17/230.76 in the semifinals, he lost to Prudhomme's Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.07/241. The following week (June 18), found Tripp at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He had some bad luck qualifying when he had a blower explode, a two-speed transmission fail, and a rear-end break. After getting everything straightened out, he ran a 6.35/234.37 to qualify #3. After all that work, he popped another blower in the first round and lost to Roger Lindamood. Shumake did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Johnny Loper took delivery of a new Sarte-built Arrow on August 8. They ran the old car at Beeline Dragway for the Gold Cup Funny Car Championships. Tripp won his final race in the "old car," running a best of 6.60/220 and stopping Henry Harrison in the final. The new car debuted at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Things didn't start too well, as, on one qualifying attempt, the new car turned into a fireball when the motor blew. The team got things going and managed to qualify #6 with a 6.09/237.46. An opening round 6.22/229.59 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.34/228. But he faced Prudhomme in round two, and once again, it was like hitting a wall; his 6.32/193.13 lost to Don's 6.04/243. The following week (September 10), he was back at Beeline for the NHRA Division Seven final. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.68 and a shutoff 9.56/96.96 in the opening round lost to Billy Meyer's 7.03/214. The team had another bad outing at OCIR for the Dr. Pepper Funny Car Championships. All cars were to make two passes, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. Tripp's troubled 7.08 beat Pulde's equally troubled 7.11 in his first race, and he was not even able to race John Force in the second race as his 'chute fell out on the line. Confirmed NHRA bests of 6.097 at Indy and 237.46 at the Gators and Indy. |

Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64 car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division Six opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: Richard attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.82/247.11 was good for the third alternate spot. His luck wasn't much better at the NHRA Arizona Nationals when his 5.58 best failed to qualify. Richard didn't go to the NHRA Supernationals, but he showed up at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals the following week (March 11). He qualified on the pole with a 5.45/242.42 in the eight-car field. A first-round 5.63/263.54 beat a tire-smoking Freddie Neely, but he lost to eventual winner Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. He qualified well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.49/266.74 (#9), but he lost in round one. Hartman ran a career-best of 5.37 at 271.90 to qualify #6 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in round two, his 5.56 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.44. He bettered his previous best at the very next NHRA race, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Only 14 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so drivers could take it easy in qualifying. Not so for Hartman, as he belted out a 5.36 career-best for the #6 spot. He lasted until round two when his reverser failed, and he gave Bruce Larson a solo into the semifinals. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.56/266.27 qualified #7. He then beat Jerry Caminito in the opening round with a 5.49. Another 5.49 at 263 defeated Tom Hoover in round two. Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car against him in the semi-final, and Hartman advanced with a 5.51/265. In the final, he faced low qualifier John Force, and Richard's 5.44/266.42 finished runner-up to Force's 5.35/268. One week later (May 27), the car wascome history at Bristol. He was there for the IHRA Springnationals. During qualifying, a rod broke, and oil got under his tires. The car caught fire a the flaming mess crashed into the guardrail hard. The car was a total loss, but Hartman walked away. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: This is the car that Don began the 1970 season with, it was replaced in August by the Buttera built Cuda that won Indy. - TN | Schumacher had his new 'Cuda at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. Things didn't go so well as in his first-round race against Dick Bourgeois he broke a rear end and was done for the rest of the day. On Jan 4 he was at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He ran two cars at the meet, his old 'Cuda with Arnie Behling driving, and his new car driven by himself. The new car failed to qualify, but eighth qualifier Gas Ronda had blown a transmission and was unable to run so Don replaced him in the show. Unfortunately, in the first round, he broke a driveshaft and lost to Charlie Allen. The Behling driven car lasted until the semifinals, but did set Low ET at 7.43. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals on January 25, Don qualified with a 7.64. He beat Tom Prock's 7.72 in the first round, with a 7.70, but in round two, a transmission let go and Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" advanced. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but due to a tricky track surface, he failed to qualify even though the "bump" was only a 7.74. |

Notes: Team car for extra bookings. Pete was at Martin, Michigan, on May 9 for the Chevy Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 7.56/192.71 beat Jim Kirby's 7.71/189. He was late off the line in the semifinal, and his 7.57/194.80 lost to Terry Hedrick's 7.61/194. |

Notes: Johnny Wright drove Mickey Thompson`s `mule car` for `70. This car was run to break in the Boss 429 for nitro Funny Car racing. Johnny started the season with a win at Irwindale's New Years Day Race. He qualified #15 in the sixteen-car field and a 7.95/187.77 beat a crossed-up Ray Alley in the first round. In the second round, Gas Ronda went into a wheelstand and shut off against him. Johnny moved on with a 7.87/182.92. It was Mickey Thompson vs Mickey Thompson in the semifinals and Wright's white Mustang got the win with a 7.65/193.12 over Danny Ongais driving the blue car that had an engine explode. In the final he raced Clyde Morgan. His 7.84/189.86 got the victory over the Javelin's 7.92/186. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, he advanced past the first-round when Larry Reyes driving the "Hawaiian" fouled against him, but in the semifinal he lost to Tommy Grove. At the AHRA Winternationals Wright qualified well, but met the Ramchargers in the first round, and lost. |
