Notes: First paint of 73. Qualified in a field of Top Fuel cars at OCIR on 5/12/73 with a 6.72. Moved to Fresno in 74? Ran a 6.40 runner-up at Indy US Nationals on 9/73 Ran 6.37 at Portland. | After his tremendous '72 season, McCulloch hoped for more success for '73. It wasn't to be. The year was good for him, but it was hard to top such a winning season as he had the year before. Ed started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran well, but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona, he barely made the show, qualifying on the "bump" spot. The track was not good, and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 7.25/204. But in the second round, his 7.82/136 lost to Jim Murphy's 7.35/176. He did not qualify well at the Bakersfield March Meet either (#10), but he advanced past round one when Bill Leavitt fouled against him. A 7.48 in round two beat Gerry Glenn in John Lombardo's car and in the semifinals, his 7.42 beat Mike Van Sant in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He was the underdog in the final against Tom Hoover who had run 7.15 and 7.17 in the last two rounds and sure enough, Tom's 7.14/218 in the final gave Ed the runner-up spot with a 7.57/196. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran 6.46/219.51 to qualify #3, and he beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round. Gene Snow shut off against him in round two and McCulloch advanced with a 6.63, but he hurt his motor while winning. He ran out of time to repair for his semifinal race so Don Schumacher soloed into the final. Ed then won a sixteen-car show at Miami near the end of March. He qualified #2 with a 6.76 and in the final, he beat Al Marshall driving Dale Creasy's Mustang. Another win came in early April at Seattle's Northwest Open. He qualified #1, set both ends of the track record, and went on to beat Kenney Goodell in the final. On April 21, McCulloch was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. It was a 32 car field and Ed set Low ET in round two with a 6.56. In the third round, his 6.81/211 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.73/218 in the "Vel's Parnelli Jones" Cuda. Seattle held its first Funny Car event in April, and Ed set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.52/218, but in the final, he was a little slow off the line and his 6.56/218 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.58/217. As noted, at OCIR's Constructor's Championships, Ed was the only Funny Car to qualify in a field of dragsters. His 6.72 qualified #23 in the 32 car show. He lost to John Stewart in the first round.

Notes: Followers of the Funny Car class noticed that the Donovan-powered FC's failed to turn in the big MPH numbers. That was maybe true, except for this car. It could mph with the best. At the NHRA's soggy Winternationals, traction was poor, but Garten still was able to qualify the car #12 at 7.633/173.07. That was better than the 42 cars that failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, an opening-round 7.588/202.54 lost to Jim Murphy's 7.40. Roger was at an eight-car show at Lions in March. He qualified #4 with a 6.80 and set Top Speed at 215.31. A 7.01 beat Mike Halloran in the first round, and in the semifinals, he got around an out-of-shape Shan Shiroma driving the "Pacemaker" Vega. He won the event with a final round 7.39/191.08 over John Lombardo. He competed at the Las Vegas Opener, where a first-round 7.10 beat Jim Adolph, but in the semifinals, his 6.91 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 6.89 in the "Mr. Ed" car. Roger finished runner-up to Gerry Glenn in an all-Donovan-powered Funny Car final at Irwindale's Memorial Day Championships. Both smoked the tires in the final, and Garten's 9.34/94.38 lost to Glenn's 7.06/191. As the season progressed, the "Warhorse" got stronger. Roger really flexed his muscles at the OCIR Championships in June. It was an eight-car field, and Garten only ran 7.02 to qualify. But in the first round, he opened some eyes with a 6.80/225.56 that beat Gervase O'Neil. A semifinal 6.61 at a whomping 227.84 beat Joe Lee's 6.91/207. No other Funny Car broke 210 during eliminations, and his speed tied the Top Fuel dragsters as tops of the meet. A final round 6.84/223.32 got him the victory over Mert Littlefield's 7.07. He was back at OCIR in July for the PDA Championships, where although he lost to Lee in the second round, he did come away with Top Speed of the meet for FC's at 218.97. Also ran 6.76 at OCIR. Roger's performance was a little "off" at the Irwindale Grand Prix. He "only" qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 7.03, and in round one, his 6.96 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.88. He ran much better at Fremont a couple of weeks later (Oct. 14) for the AHRA World Championships, where his 6.55 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car show. But he lost to Ongais in the opening round once again. Where did Roger run 6.48?

Notes: Is the photo from '75 or '76? - JB | Tom ran really well in his Duster in '75, especially on the AHRA Grand American Series. It didn't start so well when he failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but at Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.32 to qualify #5. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.61/206.89 over Ed's 6.72/197. He lost to Bill Leavitt in the second round. At the Bakersfield March Meet on March second, only 12 Funny Car's showed. Tom qualified #9 with a 6.46/203.16. He fell off to a 6.88 at 164.23 in the first round, and lost to McCulloch. Tom went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American in March. He ran 6.57 (Low ET) to qualify first. In the first round, a 6.62/216.86 beat Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. In the semifinals, he beat Neil Leffler with a 6.58/210.77. The final saw him facing Jake Johnston in the "Pisano & Matsubara" car. It was a close race, but Tom's 6.77/213.27 won over Jake's 6.78/220. He did not enter the NHRA Gatornationals as it was run on the same weekend as the AHRA race. McEwen was at Irwindale in April for the National Funny Car Championships. He beat Gary Southern in the first round, but then failed to appear for his second-round call and was replaced by Southern. In May, McEwen was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show. He and his opponent, Tripp Shumake, smoked the tires in the first round, but Tom's 6.98 came out on top. In the second round, his 6.84/199.11 lost to Dick Custy's 6.74. The AHRA Springnationals was held at St. Louis, and Tom was there running 6.60/201.35 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. A 6.55/203.16 qualified #10 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he went into heavy tire smoke and lost to McCulloch. Tom was the second alternate at Ontario on 10/12/75 at 6.406/230.76. Ran 6.365 205.47 at the US 131 PHR Championships. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/01/75

Notes: The C&O Jeep used a fiberglass body from Fibercraft Co. It used a 392 Hemi that was overbored .030. It also ran a 1/2 stroker crank from Reath. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as a Schneider cam. Syverson ported and polished the heads and both the intake and exhaust valves from Donovan measured 2 1/8 inches. An M/T intake manifold held the 30% overdriven blower in place. A Hilborn injection unit topped it off. The engine was run on 70% nitro. The hp was claimed to be 1,000. A C&O built TorqueFlite was used. The tube frame had a 110" wheelbase and the car weighed in at 2,200 Lbs. Early runs produced an 8.23/177.62. Gene was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in early April, but his first-round 9.22/166.66 lost to Fred Goeske's 8.70/181 in the first round, of the 2400 lb. Funny Car class. On April 15, he competed at an eight-car show at Lions. He qualified #3 with a 9.14 and another 9.14 in the first round, beat Rusty Delling's "Fiberglass Trends" Corvair. He lost to the race's eventual winner Hayden Proffitt in the semifinals. Irwindale held an eight-car show on August 26 and Gene was there. A first-round 8.24/176.12 beat Don Williamson in the "Hairy Canary", but in the semifinals, he fouled away an 8.53/171.10 against Marv Eldridge's 9.53/169. Conway won over an eight-car field at Lions on September 30. He beat Eldridge's Corvette in the first round, with an 8.39/172.74 and in the semifinals, his 8.31/172.08 beat Steve Barrett's 8.45/171 in the "New Breed." The final found Conway running Frank Pisano's Camaro. Frank ran a personal best of 8.19/170, but lost to Conway's holeshot-aided 8.25/175.78. On December 17, he was at OCIR's final race of '67. He led the eight-car field in qualifying with an 8.07/177 and went on to win, beating Ray Alley in the final. Also ran 8.13 at Fremont in late 1967.

Notes: Shumake started the season at OCIR's Super Bowl, where he ran second Low ET with a 6.77 and was supposed to face John Lombardo for the title, but breakage kept him from running, and Raymond Beadle took his place in the final. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.58. As attested by his first-round win over Tom Hoover, Traction was poor with a 7.08/211 beating Tom's 7.23/202. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Tripp qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.157 (at 234.37) held for Low ET. A first-round 6.59/218 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.33/212. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. A 6.23 (Low ET) at 232.55 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he raced Simon Menzies' alcohol burner and beat his 7.37 by almost a second with a 6.40/226.13. A second-round 6.46/224.43 beat a crossed-up Bob Pickett, and in the semifinals, he ran 6.36/231.36 over a tire-smoking John Collins. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and, for a change, the "Snake" was the underdog as Tripp's times in eliminations were about a tenth better. Sure enough, Don tried too hard, and he smoked the tires and shut off in the final while Tripp ran 6.75/218.44 for the victory. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.37/237.46. A first-round 6.40/232.55 beat Ed McCulloch, but in round two, his 6.44 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.37. A week after that (March 19), Tripp was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. His 6.52/207.37 qualified #1, and as the field was short, he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with a 9.89/91.64. Tripp was late off the line in his semifinal race against Tom Hoover. He tried so hard to catch Tom he set speed with his 6.78/224.43 losing to Hoover's 6.80/205. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he did not get a speed on his qualifying run, but his 6.07 was second only to Prudhomme's 6.00. A 6.23/227.84 defeated Gary Cochran, who lost a blower belt in the opening round. Bryan Raines ailing 6.70/200 in the second round, lost to his 6.44/223.88. He got another easy pass in the semifinal when Dave Condit broke. Tripp still ran 6.22/230.76. He faced Denny Savage in the final, and Savage was tough. He had also won his semifinal race with a 6.22 and qualified #3 with a 6.09. Savage came through in the final, running 6.21/214 to win over Shumake's 6.30/226.70. In April, he competed at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.50/222.77, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the opening round of eliminations. Both smoked the tires, and John's 6.51/231 lost to Shumake's 6.54/226.70. Another tire-smoking 6.92/200.44 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.52/227. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.74 and another 6.74 at 219.50 beat Randy Lackey in the first round. Tripp then set Low ET with a 6.71/218.76 in the semifinals to beat Hoover's close 6.73/216. He faced Gene Snow in the final, and a 6.79/218.44 won the race over the "Snowman's" 6.90/217. On May 13, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.23 qualified #5, which meant he had to run low qualifier Prudhomme in the opening round. It wasn't much of a race as the "Snake's" 6.04/240 easily covered Tripp's 6.38/231.95. He made up for that by winning the NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater on May 21. It wasn't much of a race, as only two FCs showed. His final round 6.48/223.32 (Top Speed) beat Steve Stephens there. Tripp had earlier run 6.44 in qualifying for Low ET as well. His next stop was at Bandimere on June 3 for the NHRA Division Five race. His 6.72/213.27 in qualifying stood for Low ET and Top Speed. With the field being short, he got a solo in round one. He crossed the centerline and was disqualified in his race against Danny Pickett in the semifinal. I loved his words after the fact, "After the third time I crossed the centerline, I figured that they must have saw me, so I shut off." At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.22/226.70 qualified #7. He improved to 6.15/232.55 in the opening round to beat Al Segrini's 6.29/223, and a 6.22/226.13 trailered Burgin's 6.40/230 in round two. But despite running a strong 6.17/230.76 in the semifinals, he lost to Prudhomme's Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.07/241. The following week (June 18), found Tripp at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He had some bad luck qualifying when he had a blower explode, a two-speed transmission fail, and a rear-end break. After getting everything straightened out, he ran a 6.35/234.37 to qualify #3. After all that work, he popped another blower in the first round and lost to Roger Lindamood. Shumake did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Johnny Loper took delivery of a new Sarte-built Arrow on August 8. They ran the old car at Beeline Dragway for the Gold Cup Funny Car Championships. Tripp won his final race in the "old car," running a best of 6.60/220 and stopping Henry Harrison in the final. The new car debuted at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Things didn't start too well, as, on one qualifying attempt, the new car turned into a fireball when the motor blew. The team got things going and managed to qualify #6 with a 6.09/237.46. An opening round 6.22/229.59 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.34/228. But he faced Prudhomme in round two, and once again, it was like hitting a wall; his 6.32/193.13 lost to Don's 6.04/243. The following week (September 10), he was back at Beeline for the NHRA Division Seven final. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.68 and a shutoff 9.56/96.96 in the opening round lost to Billy Meyer's 7.03/214. The team had another bad outing at OCIR for the Dr. Pepper Funny Car Championships. All cars were to make two passes, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. Tripp's troubled 7.08 beat Pulde's equally troubled 7.11 in his first race, and he was not even able to race John Force in the second race as his 'chute fell out on the line. Confirmed NHRA bests of 6.097 at Indy and 237.46 at the Gators and Indy.

Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64 car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division Six opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: Tim had gotten his fuel FC license at the Texas Motorplex early in the year. He ran 5.50 and 5.47 on his licensing runs. He bought K.C. Spurlock's Avenger and went FC racing. He made his FC National debut at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Only sixteen cowed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, he ran 5.34 and 5.29/282.84. The 5.29 got him the #15 spot in the field. He improved to 5.14/275.14 in the opening round wasn't enough as he lost to Richard Hartman's 5.11/282. Wilkerson really showed them at Houston, where his 5.08/276.32 qualified #2 behind John Force's 4.97/298 for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. A 5.45/258.69 was all that was needed in the first round to beat Gary Bolger, but he had problems in round two and shut down to 10.08/80.81 in a loss to Del Worsham's 7.35/121. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 5th at 5.06/297. Defeated Dean Skuza in round one before falling to Cruz Pedregon's holeshot in Round 2. Became the seventh member of the Castrol Four Second Club a month later (October 26) with a 4.945 at Pomona, Calif.

Notes: Tony had a great NHRA season, qualifying nearly everywhere and running some stout numbers. He drove a Thunderbird through Columbus, where a blower explosion destroyed that body. Was the Daytona just a new body? It probably debuted at Englishtown, where Tony qualified with a 5.429/243.27 and lost to Don Prudhomme in round one. | At the IHRA Loctite Nationwise World Nationals in Norwalk, McCallum qualified #4 for the 8 car field with a 5.568/238.73 & Faced #5 qualifier Doc Halladay in Round 1 where McCallum would lose. | Tony died in a car crash (later this year?) Notes: Mark was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.41/284.90. He did not race at Arizona but was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. He qualified #1 at 5.05/295.85 and, in round one, ran 5.15/297.22 over Tom Hoover's 5.86/178. Whit Bazemore had problems in the second round, and Oswald ran 5.23/249.72 to advance. In the semi-final, a 5.18/292.77 dropped Del Worsham. He faced Al Hofmann in the final, and Mark ran his slowest run of eliminations, a 5.31/284.53 that finished runner-up to Hofmann's 5.20/293. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Mark qualified #4 at 5.21/250.97. Unfortunately, he lost to Bazemore in the opening round. He did not go to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Confirmed best NHRA times at 5.053/297.22 at Houston Spring.

Notes: Harrison was probably best known for setting Low ET (6.54) at Indianapolis way back in '71, driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He was a hired driver driving many cars. In June, he drove John Martin's Corvette at Fremont for an eight-car show. Harrison set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 at 6.24/234.37. Only seven cars showed, so he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with an easy pass. He got another solo in the semifinals when his would-be opponent, Rodney Flournoy, had no car. Rodney had won his first-round race, but the car went up in flames and burnt to the ground. Henry's 7.08/142.63 advanced. He faced Sherm Gunn in the final, and his 6.44/225.99 got the victory over Gunn's off-pace 7.06/193. He was also at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and considering that drivers such as Tom McEwen, John Force, and Gordie Bonin failed to qualify, Henry's #6 qualifying 6.33/209.33 looked pretty good. Unfortunately, another 6.33/209 in the first round, lost to Raymond Beadle's close 6.32/230 in the "Blue Max." In August, he was at Bonneville Raceway for the AHRA Western Nationals. In the first round, an off-pace 6.78/212.77 lost to eventual winner John Collins' 6.40/211. Harrison qualified #1 at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 23 with a 5.98. Spokane's elapsed time and speed clocks were said to be automatically adjusted for the track's 2,430-foot elevation. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Mike Miller. A week later (August 31), he was again a low qualifier with a 6.09 at Portland International for the AHRA Northwest Nationals. The car broke in the first round, and he lost to Bonin. At Fremont, he again out-qualified some "name" drivers at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.13/233.76. Some "names" that failed to qualify included Don Prudhomme, Kenny Bernstein, Force, and McEwen. Eventual winner Mike Dunn, driving the "Hawaiian," stopped Harrison's 6.24/233.76 in the first round with a 6.16/230. The car continued to show it had power at the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Harrison continued to out-qualify the favorites, running 6.11/239.36 for the #13 spot in the field. In the first round, he improved to 5.983/241.93, but he was late and lost to Beadle's 6.00/224. | That 5.98 loss to the Blue Max was something to see. In the same round Dale Armstrong went 5.89 in the Speed Racer. Lidtke and Harrison would throw in again in '83 on the 5.8- second Lidtke-Harrison-Lidtke Trans Am. The Jam-Air, with Gary Southern, was absent at the '82 Winters. - Joe Moore

Notes: Powder blue. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1982. Mike qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/239.36. In the first round, he and opponent Dale Pulde smoked the tires with Mike's 7.48/225.56 getting the win light over Dale's 7.66/110. In the second round, he again went up in smoke, and he shut off to an 8.38/115.23 that lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/238 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Dunn qualified #4 with a 6.04/238.99. In the first round, his 6.31/232.55 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.29/237. Mike was at OCIR in April for the Coor's 64-car show. He set Low ET there, with a 5.96, but in the opening round, he got out of shape in his race with Kenny Bernstein and ended up smacking the guardrail. In May, he won the NHRA Division Six race at Baylands. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #3 with a 6.15/235.60 (Top Speed). in the opening round, he beat Sherm Gunn and a 6.21/230.17 beat Tom McEwen in the semifinal. His final-round opponent was Gary Densham. Mike easily took the victory with a 6.28/234.37 as Densham slowed to 6.61/215. The "Hawaiian" team showed that they were making some serious horsepower at Columbus when Dunn ran 246.93 in qualifying. But the power wasn't hitting the ground, as the ET was only 6.14. That gave him the #15 spot in the field, and he lost to Dale Pulde in round one. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Although Mike only qualified #13, he beat John Lombardo, a tire-smoking Billy Meyer, and Gary Burgin, who broke, to reach the final. There he went up against Don Prudhomme. His final round, 6.15/237.46, finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.00/241. | 6.18 251.18 AHRA US 30 1982

Notes: The "Hawaiian" team started their '84 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. The car was using a Ford EXP body after the Charger exploded at the '83 NHRA World Finals. This was the first and only time the "Hawaiian" was Ford bodied. He qualified with a 6.19, but he lost to John Force in the opening round. The car was still wearing the Ford body at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Dunn qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.35. He improved to 6.28/230 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 6.52/214. In the semifinals, he lost to Henry Harrison. By Pomona, car owner Roland Leong had enough time to put a Mopar body back on the car. Dunn qualified #14 for the NHRA Winternationals at 5.989/242.58, but he went out early, losing to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, of eliminations, 5.93/251 to 6.09/239. The car didn't respond too well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mike's 6.183/230.17 best failed to qualify. Things weren't much better at Atlanta, but at least he qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Southern Nationals sixteen-car show with a 6.051/243.24. He lost to Al Segrini in the opening round, 5.90/240 to a 10-second shut-off. The big Bakersfield Meet was held in May, and the "Hawaiian" always made a showing there. Only ten cars showed for the eight-car field, so qualifying was relativity easy. Mike's 5.93 qualified #4, but in the first round, he hurt some parts while beating Denny Savage. He was unable to return for the semifinals. Getting past that first-round was becoming quite the chore, and it continued at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. The team qualified #5 at 5.954/249.30, but Dunn's 6.08/249 in the first round, lost to Tim Grose's 6.00/239. That was still better than their performance at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a stuck throttle sent the car off the end of the track on a 6.102/236.84 qualifying attempt. The Daytona body was destroyed. By July 1, a new body was on, and the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mike ran a great 5.859/250.00 to qualify #4. He also got to go a few rounds, running 5.90s at 240 plus, finally losing to the eventual winner Billy Meyer, in the semifinal when they broke. The following week(July 8) saw them go one round farther at the AHRA Grand American race at Gary, Indiana's US 30. A final round 5.94/252 gave Dunn the runner-up spot to Frank Hawley's 5.85/250 in the "Chi-Town Hustler."At the NHRA Summernationals, Mike qualified #8 with a 5.833/252.10. He beat Segrini in the opening round (5.884/250.69 to 5.99/246), but his off-pace 6.15/218 in round two lost to Meyer's 5.88. A 6.05/241 qualified #11 at Denver, but Mike lost round one to Don Prudhomme, 5.99/234 to 6.07/243. That was Mike Dunn's last NHRA national event for 1984. By Brainerd, Mike had been injured and couldn't drive. Rick Johnson took over driving the Hawaiian.

Notes: At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Anderson ran 6.38/226.70 to qualify #11. He had problems in the first round against Tom Hoover and shut off to 9.83. Tom was the second alternate for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.51/227.27 best. At NHRA Columbus, he hit 6.38 again (speed unavailable) but was the third alternate. In July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11 (Low ET), but he smoked the tires in the first round he shut down to a losing 11.90. A 6.34 (speed unavailable) made him the second alternate at Sanair. The team took a massive jump in performance with a 6.088/236.84 #11 qualifying effort at Indy. Unfortunately, Tom lost a close 6.15/236 to 6.185/237.46 decision in round one to Raymond Beadle. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the season. Was he in the Omni by Indy?
