Notes: Direct Drive backed Tirend Activity Booster. For the 1969 season, Tom bought the Candies and Hughes '68 Barracuda (yes, a Logghe car - C&H would go to Don Hardy for '69), installed a Tim Beebe 392 with direct drive, and qualified no. 1 at the Winternationals. At '69 Springnationals, he was runner up to Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mach 1. He only ran this car one year. The next year would see the Hot Wheels saga begin. | At the AHRA Winternationals, Tom failed to qualify, running a best of 7.97/193. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.79/193.96 (Low ET) but lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.60 in the first round, with an 8.96. At Bakersfield, Tom ran a first-round 7.78/196.93 (Top Speed) over Ray Alley (8.18/187.50), but a second 7.78/196.73 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.70/195.65 in the semifinal. He failed to qualify at Lions on March 22. On May 4 at Aquasco, he lost to Tommy Grove's 7.91/191.08 in the first round, with an 8.23/164.53. On May 11, he lost a match race against Charlie Allen at Suffolk. At the AHRA Springnationals, a 7.82 qualified him fifth, and he made it to the semifinal before Leonard Hughes ran a 7.52/202.70 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Tom's 7.70/188. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified third with a 7.78/184.04 and ran 7.63/185.56 over Gas Ronda, a 7.67 over Sid Foster's quicker 7.60, and a semifinal 7.57 over Fritz Callier. A broken rear end ended his chances against Ongais in the final. On June 22 at Aquasco, he lost to Lew Arrington's 8.07/187.88 in the first round, when he smoked the tires to an 8.71/152.28 loss. On July 9 at Atco's fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Frank Oglesby's 7.76/194.80 beat him in the first round. At Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 16, a first-round 8.07/181.44 failed to beat Jim Liberman's 7.50/177.86 (Low ET). On August 2, Tom singled in the first round, over Ron Rivero at the PHR Championships, who shut off in the K&G Mustang. But in the second round, he broke, giving Dick Loehr a solo into the semis. At the US Nationals, Tom qualified in both Top Fuel and Funny Car with his 'Cuda qualified tenth with a 7.478/206.42. But when good friend John Mulligan had his crash, Tom left to be at the hospital with him. - Ron Howard

Notes: Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars racer. Jack Chrisman's new 118" Fletcher-built Mustang was a thing of beauty. The Shedlik built body was painted a light metallic red. The stock bore and stroke 427 SOHC used M/T rods supporting Ansen 6:1 pistons. Crane cams were used. A four-port Hilborn Injector sat on the Don Hampton-built blower. It sat on a stock Ford intake manifold for blower applications. The blower drive came from Delta. Doug's Headers were also used. The transmission was a B&M reworked C-6. A Detroit Locker rear with 3.50 gears put the power to the ground. | The car could win at car shows, but Jack had a rough year at the track. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. On March 22, he again failed to make the field at Lions for an eight-car show. Twenty-two cars attempted to make the show. On April 20, Chrisman faced Fred Goeske at Gary, Indiana, for a best of three match. He had a bad day as he lost three straight. In their first race, Fred's 7.70/173 beat his 8.14/160. Both got quicker in the second race, where Fred's 7.63/193 got the better of Jack's 7.94/181. Both ran their best times in the last race, with Fred's 7.60/197 leading Chrisman's 7.87/188 through the traps. Amarillo, Texas, held a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race on April 27, but Jack failed to make the final round. Another Cavalcade race was held at Epping on June 15, and he lost all three of his races, running a best of only 8.96/139.50. In June, he was at Maple Grove for another Cavalcade race but again failed to make the final. On August 17, for National Trail's Cavalcade event, Jack won his first race with an 8.20 over Marv Eldridge's 8.26. He broke at half-track in the second race but won when Goeske fouled away a 7.97. He lost his third-round race to Kelly Chadwick's 8.78 with an ailing 9.40. On September 7 at Shelby International Raceway for the Memphis Funny Car 500, Chrisman won his first-round race when Roger Lindamood broke. But Lindamood got in with the break rule in effect and was matched against Chrisman again in the second round. This time Roger set a 7.44 track record in beating Jack. The highlight of his season had to be at Indy, where Jack qualified #13 for the US Nationals with a 7.520 and had a Top Speed at 206.42. A first-round 7.663/200 beat Dick Loehr's quicker 7.56/193, but in the second round, his 7.72/196 wasn't enough to beat Leonard Hughes's 7.25/201. On October 18, a Cavalcade race was held at Lions, but in the first round, he ran a blower-popping 8.13/177.51 that lost to Marv Eldridge's 7.84/180. | The Coke circuit ad from 1969 listed Jack's best times at 7.57/193.91.

Notes: In mid-January, Gene won the Lions Grand Premiere when he beat Bobby Rowe (Hawaiian) 6.54/222.77 to a losing 6.55/226.13. 1972 was also the first full year that plastic model company Revell was involved with drag racing. Gene's Logghe chassis was used as the template by Revell for all their newly designed funny car model kits. This chassis design, with slight variations, has been in constant production by Revell for almost forty years. Also ran 6.782/184.42 at Tulsa PRA race. Used a Crowerglide. Gene's '72 season started at Fremont for their New Year's race where he qualified second with a 6.82 and ran a first-round 6.87 over Kelly Brown (Mr. Ed). In the semis a broken trans let eventual winner Bill Leavitt (6.76) advance to the final. At the AHRA Winternats a 6.77 qualified him #5, but he failed to reach the finals. As mentioned above, he won the Lions Grand Premiere on January 28 with his Low ET charge of 6.54. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.57/223.88 at OCIR while winning the second All-Pro event over Ray Alley. On March 5 at Bakersfield for the March Meet he qualified #1 with a 7.03/209.30, but Kelly Brown's 7.00/201 beat him in the first round. Snow qualified second at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA Nationals and beat Tom Hoover in the first round, before setting Low ET at 6.66 in the semis over a crossed up Leroy Goldstein. In the final Bill Leavitt's 6.70/210 beat his 6.82/180.36 and he had to settle for runner-up. In May at OCIR for the Hang Ten meet he ran a first-round 6.79/215.82 over Tom Ferraro and a second round 6.68/222.22 (Top Speed) over Sush Matsubara. In the semis he got out of shape and lost to Pat Foster's 6.64/207. On May 26 at Union Grove for the Olympics of drag racing event, Shirley Muldowney's 6.76/207 beat Gene in the semis. The next day (27), he runner-upped to a strong running Al Marshall (6.66/218) still at the Drag Racing Olympics. In June at St. Louis for the Dick Harrell Benefit race-12 cars showed and all ran the first-round with the two Low ETs meeting for the title. The Super Duster (6.66) and Snow (6.80) had the Low ETs and met in the final with Gene winning. At the NHRA Springnats on June 11, Jake Johnston's 6.94 beat his boss in the first round. Also in June at Bristol for the IHRA Springnats, Gene's 7.25 qualified #5. He advanced past the first-round when Dale Pulde lost a blower belt. A second round 7.29 beat Johnny Valadez's Chevy-powered car, but a tire smoking 7.58 failed to get past Jim Paoli's 6.97/212 in the semi's. On June 18 Rockford held their East/West meet and 24 cars showed for 12 spots. Snow qualified third with a 6.98, but lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.82/220 in the final with a quicker 6.74/227.27 (Top Speed). The NHRA Summernats on July 16 was next stop for Gene and a 6.60/219.51 qualified him fourth. A first-round 6.77 beat Al Marshall (6.85), and Leonard Hughes failed to show in the second round advancing Snow into the semis where an off pace 7.06/161 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.67/213. Qualified at 6.782/184.42 at Tulsa PRA in August. He made it into the semifinals again at the IHRA Summernationals at Dragway 42 on August 20 where he ran a first-round 6.70/216.84 over Ron Colson's 6.76/222, a second round 6.68/218.97 advanced when Leavitt broke a rear and a 6.83/189.47 lost to Clare Sanders thundering 6.55/228.42. A big win came over Charlie Therwhanger at Amarillo for the Division 4 final. A 6.78/184.42 qualified #19 at Tulsa for AHRA's National Challenge race, but he lost to Mart Higginbotham in the first frame. On to Dallas for the IHRA Nationals where he again qualified with a 6.78 good for eleventh. A first-round 6.72 beat a sideways Richard Tharp in the first round, and he failed to fire for round two. He was reinstated when Shirl Greer broke a trans. In the semis against Don Schumacher, he again failed to fire. On September 18 at the IHRA US Open he was shut down on the line with an oil leak in the first round. An interesting win came his way at the AHRA Grand Am Finals where his 7.36/131 lost to Tommy Grove's 6.68/213, but it was claimed that Grove crossed the centerline. Gene was said to have given the prize money to Tommy, but kept the race win for his sponsors. On October 22 at Amarillo for the NHRA World Finals, Preston Davis' 6.61/212 beat Gene's 6.70/212.79 in the first round.

Notes: Harrison competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.08/243.24 qualified #3 for the eight-car field. An opening round 6.10/240.64 beat Mert Littlefield, and in the semifinal, his 6.14/240.64 defeated Tim Grose's 6.26/223. In the final, he went up against the "Hawaiian" driven by Mike Dunn. Henry had trouble and shut down at 9.23 in a runner-up finish to Dunn's 6.04. Shortly after that, he was at OCIR for its first of two 64 car shows held in April. All cars were to make two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Harrison ran good, but his ETs were not good enough to make the final. He had run 6.06/238.72 to beat John Force in his first race. His opponent, Littlefield, tagged the guardrail in the second race, and Henry's 6.10/241.28 won their race. The following week (April 9), they did it again at OCIR. Once again, he failed to run well enough to make the final, but his 6.11/238.09 in the first round easily beat Mike Van Sant. In his second race, he fouled against Jim Dunn and shut down to 7.39. Lidtke made one of the first twin pump setups. Henry ran one NHRA national event, the World Finals. He qualified #7 at 5.887/248.61. Sherm Gunn pulled off a slight upset by defeating Harry in round one, 6.04/234.98 to 6.10/242.58.

Notes: Tom started the '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. There was not a lot of traction available as Low ET of the meet was 6.80. McEwen qualified #7 in the eight-car field with an 8.53. He lasted until the semifinals, beating Johnny West before losing to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.03/241.93 qualified #4. He beat Ken Veney in round one, with a 6.04/235.60, while in round two, Tom only needed a 6.21 to get around a tire-smoking John Lombardo. In the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to a 7.18 that lost to Frank Hawley's 5.93 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He lost early at the NHRA Gatornationals after qualifying #13 with a 6.01/247.35, but a first-round 6.21/234.37 lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at 5.89/246. The following week (March 20), Tom was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #5 for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the first round. In April, he was at OCIR for the 64 car Funny Car race. He lost to Prudhomme's 6.28 in round two with an off pace 6.99. On April 17, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Tom ran a great 5.93/245.23 to qualify third. To show how tough the field was, drivers such as Bernstein, Beadle, Billy Meyer, Gary Burgin, and Dale Pulde failed to qualify! In eliminations, however, McEwen lost to Al Segrini in the first round. On May 2, he scored a win at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.44 behind Prudhomme's 6.29. Tom became the favorite of the two heading towards the final when he beat Mike Dunn in the first round, with a 6.22/236.84 and, in the semifinals, set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.18/239.36 (track record). In the final, it was the "Snake" vs. The "Mongoose," and the "Goose" prevailed with a 6.20/238.72, stopping Don's 6.51/194. He continued to qualify well when the NHRA tour showed up at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. Tom qualified #2, but he failed to reach the finals. His next showing was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals on June 5. Tom qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Mark beat McEwen and went on to win the event. The next NHRA race was the Springnationals. He didn't qualify so well there, running 6.11/241.28 for the #14 spot. In the first round, Tom picked up to a 6.06/234.98 but lost to Pulde's quick-leaving 6.07/243. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, McEwen and Prudhomme reversed their finish of the last AHRA race. Once again, Tom qualified #2 with a 6.13/223.33 behind the "Snake's" track record 6.05/244. Tom ran 6.11/227.28 over a tire-smoking John Collins and a 6.57/195.66 over John Force (who also smoked his tires) to meet Prudhomme in the final. Don had been running 6.0s in his races, and in the final, he slowed to a 6.13/243, but it was still enough to beat the "Mongoose's" 6.68/155.18. In early July, the NHRA tour was in Canada for the Grandnationals, and Tom made the trek there. He qualified last in the eight-car show and lost to Veney in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the "Coors" Corvette qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.00/242.58. He faced low qualifier Oswald in the first round, and stepped up to a 5.93/247.93, but it wasn't enough to overcome Mark's 5.88/248. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, preferring to go to Kansa City for the AHRA Summernationals. It was another "Snake vs. Mongoose" finish there. Tom qualified #3 with a 6.16/238.09 behind Mike Dunn and Prudhomme. McEwen improved to 6.11/229 in round one, to beat Tom Hoover. Dunn lost in that round, and the "Snake" slowed to a 6.40 win. McEwen ran even better in the semifinals, hitting 6.06/237 to send Ron Correnti's 6.29/236 home. But Prudhomme then ran 6.05 (Low ET) in his semifinal win. So once again, the two would race for all the marbles. They had a great race that saw Don's 6.07/239 win over the "Goose's" 6.10/222.

Notes: Gordon was at Pomona for the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.44/272.72 to qualify #15. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Mineo skipped the second NHRA event of the season, the Arizona Nationals, but he was back on tour at Houston for the Supernationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.31/282.57 and a first-round 5.33/276.92, taking out Gary Clapshaw's 5.37/267. In the second round, a 5.37/248.41 advanced over Jerry Caminito. In the semifinal, his 5.34/250.20 beat Tom Hoover's off pace 5.78/183. In the final, he faced another first-time finalist in Cruz Pedregon. Unfortunately, Gordon had problems and shut off to a 17.43/54.59 loss to Pedregon's 5.14/284. The next NHRA event was the Gatornationals on March 22. A 5.38/283.37 qualified #10, but Mark Oswald's 5.24/283 in the first round beat his 5.40/252.52. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Gordon had little trouble qualifying, running a 5.31/246.64 for the #7 spot. In the first round, his 5.42/209.71 fell to Paul Smith's 5.33/236. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Mineo opened some eyes when he qualified #3 with a 5.31/283.55 (Top Speed). He improved to a Low ET of the meet 5.24 at 259.59 in the first round while beating Gary Litton. In the second round, he slowed to a 5.46/266.19 that lost to John Force's 5.43/271. He qualified #5 with a 5.32/280.46 at the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.43/268.97 got past Gary Bolger in the first round, but in round two, he fouled away a 5.48/272.31 against Hofmann's 5.31/274. Mineo did not follow the tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, but he was at Englishtown for NHRA's ninth race of the season, the Summernationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.25/284.36 and a first-round 5.34/262.31 beat Caminito, but he was again stopped in round two. This time Chuck Etchells got him with a 5.25/277 beating Mineo's 5.44/236.65. Gordon had a great year with 5.20s at 280 plus at many events, including best times of 5.172 at the Finals and 285.35 at Indy. He was runner up at the 1992 Houston Supernationals and the low qualifier at Sonoma in 1992.

Notes: Kenji started the season by pushing Jim Dunn's car to a 5.25/278.46 to qualify #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires in the first round, with Hoover's 8.45/150 beating Okazaki's shut off 11.42/73.87. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.29/280.46 qualified #9. He beat Whit Bazemore in the first round, with a 5.30/268.09, but an even better 5.27/267.05 in round two lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.13/289. The NHRA Supernationals at Houston was not a good outing for Dunn and Okazaki. They qualified #8 with a 5.30/267.45. Kenji went back out to try to better his time and had a motor blow. The resulting fire wrecked the body and they were unable to run in eliminations. The team was unable to repair in time for the NHRA Gatornationals, but they were back in action at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. Unfortunately, a best of 6.16/155.44 failed to qualify. Kenji qualified at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in May. His 5.43/261.62 qualified #9. More bad luck set in when he broke in the first round, against Gordon Mineo. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenji ran 5.27/262.92 to qualify #10. A 5.23/269.13 advanced past the first-round when Bazemore broke(?). He lost to Chuck Etchells in round two.

Notes: Pulde qualified #8 at Pomona for NHRA Winternationals with 5.24/281.07. He improved to 5.11/285.53 in the opening to defeat Gary Bolger. In round two, his 5.12/284.27 beat Cruz Pedregon's 5.20/287. But despite running a consistent 5.13/283.37 in the semi-final, he got left on by John Force, and Force's 5.15/288 held on to win. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.18/282.84 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he shut down early with problems in the first round and lost to Gordon Mineo's 6.14/163. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 there at 5.12/289.76. But he went home early again as his off-pace 5.82/240.77 fell to Bolger's 5.35/262 in the first round. Dale's best times were 5.088 at Ennis and 289.76 at Gainesville.

Notes: Condit was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. His 6.68/207.37 qualified #14 in the 32 car field. He improved to 6.53/213.27 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Mike Burkhart. His 6.57/216.34 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.96/205 in the "Trojan Horse" in the second round. But despite running another 6.53 at 217.91 in round three, he lost to Richard Tharp's 6.50/218 in the "Blue Max."The team failed to qualify at Pomona, but it wasn't for lack of power. The track was horrible, and a high seven-second time could get you a spot in the show. Dave qualified on the bump in Gainesville with a 6.607/215.34. He beat Harlan Thompson in round one, 6.789/187.89, when Harlan lost fire. He lost to eventual winner Pat Foster in round two, 6.36/223 to a 10-second shutoff. Dave was at Beech Bend in June for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He ran 6.78/197.80 in the qualifying round, and in the semifinal, his 6.96/206.89 beat Ron O'Donnell. He faced David Ray, driving Mike Burkhart's Vega in the final. Condit had problems and shut down to 8.28/106.37 while Ray picked up the victory with a 6.83/208. He was one of three dozen DNQs at NHRA Indy with a best attempt of 6.75/218.44. Dave was at Ontario Motor Speedway in November for the NHRA Supernationals. He qualified #14 with a 6.506/216.34, but in the first round, he got crossed-up against eventual winner Tom McEwen, and he shut down at 9.65. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.506 at Ontario and 218.44 at Indy. Dave ran 6.53 at Phoenix and 6.55/227.40 at Lebanon Valley Coke race 1973. Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.51/227. Did Dave run 6.46/231 this year?

Notes: A great-looking machine that was lost in a spectacular top end crash at the '77 Nationals in Indy. Dale broke his arm in that crash. Formerly listed 6.085/236 best, but Cars Magazine article cited 6.07/237. | I also have those numbers from GVR for '77, but wasn't sure if the whole 'timing' thing at GVR was legit now. If those numbers were still considered sketchy, I found a 6.18 at Union Grove and a 234.98 at Indy in '77. - Dennis Doubleday | Ran 6.33/209.79 at PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. Also legit 6.192 at the NHRA Winters. On May 15, Dale won the NHRA Division 4 race at Houston. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49. Due to his low qualifying run, he got the odd-lot solo in round one, and ran 6.58. A 6.56/208 beat Billy Meyer in the semifinals. Emery faced Gordon Mineo in the final and he got the victory with another 6.49 at only 183.67 over "Flash Gordon's" 6.60.

Notes: On April 2, Gary faced off against Jay Howell, who was driving the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair. Dyer won all three races as Howell was having all sorts of problems with the newly installed Supercharger on his engine. Gary made runs of 8.47/170.75, 8.28/174.75, and a solo 8.26/174.75 to win the match. Shortly after that, he was at Capitol Raceway for a best of three match against arch-rival Don Gay. Gay's GTO broke a rear end in their first race, and Gary soloed with an 8.47/173.74. In the second race, the big Hemi in the "Mr. Norm" car broke a rod and slowed to a 9.13 loss to Don's 8.63/163. Dyer was done for the day, and Gay made another solo run to win the match race. On April 30, he was up against Arnie "the Farmer" Beswick for a best of three at Gary, Indiana. He won the match by winning the first two races with times of 8.39/166.67 and 8.23/176.14. On May 20, Dyer faced off against Eddie Schartman at York US 30. The factory-backed Comets were tough to beat, and on this day, Gary didn't. In their first race, Eddie's 8.20/169 beat Dyer's similar 8.20/171.42. The Dodge blew the motor in the second race, and Schartman's 8.28/167 won the match. Also 8.01/185.56 in the third round of 1967 OCIR Manufacturer's Meet and 8.02 Minnesota.

Notes: Crowerglide. In 1971, Snow fielded one of the first multicar teams in the sport, running a pair of mini-Chargers with longtime crew chief Jake Johnston as the other driver. Highlights of the season included the Super Stock Magazine Championships in York, Pa., a runner-up finish at the Summernationals, a win at the OCIR All Pro Series, and a Drag News Driver of the Year award. Ran 6.71 at Lions Drag Strip 10/71. Ran 6.71 Low ET at AHRA St. Louis. | Snow debuted his new Charger at a four-car race at Southland in March. The car was still in primer, and on Gene's first-ever pass in the car, his 8.19/128.20 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.35/187. In the second round, he singled, running a track record 7.03 at 194.38. A follow-up run of 6.94 showed that the new car was tough. The car's national event debut came at the NHRA Gatornationals, where Snow qualified #3 with a 6.85/204. He beat Tom Prock's 7.02 in the opening round with a 6.89, but in round two, he smoked the tires to an 8.13 loss to Phil Castronovo's 6.93. He dominated the final OCIR All-Pro race run the following week (March 27). There he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.82/217.39. He then went on to win by running 7.02/201.79 over Dean LaPole, and an easy 6.9/210 advanced in round two when Dave Condit lost fire in the "L. A. Hooker." He eased past the semifinals to meet with Jim Dunn in the final. Dunn broke, and Snow ran 7.89/120.34 for the victory. The next day he jumped on a plane and went to Amarillo to drive his old Challenger, and he won there too. In April, he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final against Mart Higginbotham only to have his Charger break. He then won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas. A final round 7.36 stopped Charlie Smith. Then came his big win at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30. Gene qualified #1 with a 6.93 but ran nothing but 6.8's in eliminations. He started with a 6.88/199.11 over Lew Arrington. Low ET came in round two, where his 6.85/209.79 stopped McCulloch's 6.97/214. Another 6.85 at 214.79 in the semifinals beat Leonard Hughes' 6.97/201. In the final, he faced newcomer Tim Kushi, and Snow stormed (pun intended) to a 6.88/219.51 (Top Speed) to beat Tim's 7.37/199. After that, he won an eight-car show at Epping, stopping Terry Hedrick in the final. He also won the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway on May 23. He ran times of 6.93 (Low ET) at 201.34, 6.97/192.70 over Dick Harrell, and 6.98/203.60 over Higginbotham to reach the final. For the money, he raced Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. Snow's 6.99/169.81 got him the victory. June started with Snow bagging another win, this time at the Baton Rouge AHRA Grand American race. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.79 over a fouling Hughes. The next week (June 13), he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.89/215.31 qualified #3, and he beat Dunn in the first round, but he fouled against Sush Matsubara in round two. His next win came at the AHRA Springnationals held at Denver on June 27. There he beat John Dekker in the final. Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.92. A first-round 7.05/196 beat Kelly Brown who lost an engine in Barry Setzer's Vega. He got to solo in the next two rounds when Casey Powell was unable to run, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals faced Hughes in the final, and Snow was just a bit late off the line, and his 6.95/207.37 lost to Hughes' 6.96/211. He won over an eight-car field at Union Grove two days later, setting Low ET at 6.71. Another runner-up finish came at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where despite setting track records of 6.73/220.58 in the final, he lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.77/217. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinals at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.

Notes: On this car's very first run, we set a new track record at Detroit for ET and MPH. We raced at 14 events in 1971 and set track records at 11 of the 14 events. Later that year, I had the worst funny car fire in the history of drag racing to that point at Lebanon Valley, NY. I was burned over 60 percent of my body. I needed skin grafts, etc. I was laid up for a year. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15

Notes: Phil was at Miami-Hollywood in March for its Winter Championships. An 8.24/166.35 advanced in round one, while in the second round, he set both ends of the track record with a 6.97/211.26 over Mike Burkhart who broke. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 7.03/194.80. He faced Curtis Wasson's Chevy-powered Camaro in the final. Wasson's best in eliminations had been 7.59, but in the final, the Charger broke and slowed to 9.78/73.95 while Curtis got the victory with an 8.77/186. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the car was extensively damaged when the throttle stuck and Phil intentionally drove the car into the guardrail. He qualified #7 with a 7.05 and ran a best of 6.93 in eliminations before the crash in the semifinals. With the repaired and repainted car, he went to Maple Grove in May for an eight-car show. A 7.28/193.54 beat Pete Hill's 7.80/195 in the first round, but he broke against Bob Cain in the semifinals. He made the finals at the inaugural NHRA Grandnationals. During that final race against Sam Miller, Phil had a two-car length lead when he lost traction and skidded on the grease-sweep that was still in his lane after the cleanup of a Ray Motes blown engine during the Top Gas final. After losing the race in the manner that he did Phil was understandably upset at NHRA for what he thought was an insufficient effort in cleaning the track. He said "Another ten minutes of sweeping would have made all the difference. I don't plan to run any more NHRA events ever - I could have killed myself." That off the cuff remark cost him entry into the years biggest race, the NHRA Nationals at IRP over Labor Day weekend. The NHRA pulled out and rejected his previously approved entry for Indy. Cooler heads prevailed later in the year, and he was allowed to enter the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo. In that race, he used consistent low to mid-7-second ETs and opponents' breakage to become the NHRA World Champion. His 7.15 at 210.28 was good enough in the final to beat a broken Jake Johnson. Ironic that the man that said he would never run another NHRA event became world champion. And the association that denied him entry into their biggest race now had to honor him. Phil ran the Charger until November when a new Woody Gilmore built Challenger made its debut.

Notes: John made his driving debut in the "Blue Max" at Pomona by qualifying #1 for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.68/255.68. He improved to a 5.66/254 in the first round, to beat John Collins. The 5.66 held up for a new NHRA record. He slipped to a 5.76/253 in the second round that lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.73/252. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.71/253.66. A first-round 5.77/251.81 beat Tim Grose and in round two, his 5.80/251 took out Tom McEwen. He advanced into the final by beating Dale Pulde in the semifinal with a 5.76/255. He met Kenny Bernstein in the final and John had trouble and shut off to a 13.10-67.17 while Kenny got the victory with a 5.70/254. It was at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta that car owner Raymond Beadle debuted his new aerodynamic Mustang. The car ran well; John qualified it #4 with a 5.85/248.75. He made it all the way to the semifinals before losing a rod just off the line in his race against McCulloch. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lombardo's best of 5.96/241.02 only qualified #12. He lost to John Force in the first round. Things went even worse at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where the best he could run in qualifying was a 6.01/242.06 for the #14 spot on the grid. Billy Meyer took him out in the first round. At the end of June, the "Blue Max" team went up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. They qualified better running a 5.82/255.82 for the #8 spot. But Lombardo lost early. The next NHRA race was the Summernationals at Englishtown in mid-July. John qualified on the "bump" with a 5.97/239, but he lost in the first round, to Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." They made the trip to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals in early August and qualified #5. A first-round 5.92/252.10 advanced, but Lombardo lost to Meyer in the second round. John lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round, at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He ran 6.10/241.93 to qualify #12 there. At Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, he lost to Collins in the first round, after qualifying #9 with a 5.88/247.93. He made enough points to qualify for the Big Bud Shootout, but in the first round, of the eight-car event run in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals, he had problems and shut off against McCulloch. After having such a bad year, Indy turned things around for the team. Lombardo qualified #8 with a 5.74/256.99. In the first round, he recorded a 5.78/252 while beating Jim White. In the second round, his 5.77/250.55 beat Johnson, and another 5.77 at 252.66 beat Bernstein's 5.82/257 in the semifinals. In the final, they faced a tough competitor in Pulde. Dale was having one of his best seasons ever driving his new Buick Regal FC. But in the final, the "Max" prevailed with a 5.78/252.38 getting the victory over Pulde's 5.83/213. That was the highlight of the year for the team. After that, they went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships, where John qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. The team didn't go to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but did go to Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. John qualified #4 with a 5.72/247 and beat McCulloch in the first round. A great 5.68/249.30 in the second round lost to Pulde's 5.67/250. On September 29, Lombardo made it into the final at the IHRA World Nationals. He got there after winning a semifinal race with Jim Head where both ran 5.80 (Lombardo at 251). Unfortunately, the "Max" broke in the final, giving Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car an easy win. On October 6, the team elected to run at Darlington for the IHRA Stroh's Nationals rather than at the NHRA Fallnationals that was being run the same day. John qualified #2 behind Bernstein and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Paul Smith. At Pomona for the season ending NHRA World Finals, Lombardo qualified #9 with a 5.78/233.40. He lost to Bernstein in the first round.

Notes: Denny's first time driving the Chi-Town car came on March 2 at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Runner up to Gene Snow at IHRA Bristol June 1975 (6.46/224.43 bests). His 6.33/230.17 lost to Prudhomme in the semis at the PHR 131 race. Denny qualified #14 at 6.358/226.13 at Ontario, the team's only NHRA event. He beat Dave Condit in round one when Dave lost fire, hitting 6.452/199.11. Norm Wilcox did not show in round two, and Denny got a 6.660/184.80 bye run. Austin Coil really turned up the wick in the semis, and Denny ran a season-best 6.210/231.36 to defeat John Lombardo's decent 6.344/225.00. Prudhomme could not back up his amazing 5.987/241.53 numbers, but a 6.158/240.64 made Denny's 6.937/155.44 a runner-up in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Gene Snow). Hometown confirmed 1975. 787 or 781? Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975.

Notes: At the Irwindale Grand Premiere, Halloran qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, his 6.59/221.12 lost to Jim Liberman's 6.51/207. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Mike won the OCIR Nitro Championships in July. He ran 6.36 and 6.52 on his way to the final where he met and beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang for the title. It wasn't long after that, he won again at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a twelve car show, and he ran a best of 6.56/222.22 (Top Speed) on the way to the final where he met with Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker." Both drivers had trouble in the final, but Mike's 8.46/171.42 got the victory over Dave's 9.07/123.

Notes: Dave was at Irwindale on June 5 for the NHRA Division Seven race. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.67/214.28 lost to eventual winner John Lombardo's 6.61. Condit and the Hooker set Low ET at the Orange County PDA Meet in August at 6.51. Fifth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.49/219.51. Qualified #6 with a 6.271/231.36 at Ontario 10/11/75. Lost fire in round one, and lost to Denny Savage. Hometown confirmed. Did this car go 6.21 somewhere this year? We previously listed that.

Notes: Qualified 5th at the 1975 NHRA Summernationals (Englishtown) with a 6.38/231.36 pass. Speed held up as "Top Speed of the Event." - TN | Ran a 6.32/228.42 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT | Ran 6.36/230.76 at Indy US Nationals 9/75 and 6.345/229.59 in qualifying at Ontario 10/12/75. | After driving Pete Everett’s "Lil’ Demon" for the first part of the year, Bob Pickett showed up at the Byron Manufacturer's Meet on June 15 behind the wheel of Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. It was a successful outing as all twelve cars ran round one, with the eight lowest ETs running in round two. Pickett’s 6.88/198.23 beat Shirl Greer's close 6.89/200 in the first round, and both advanced to round two. In this round, the two Low ET cars would then advance to the final. Bob faced Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems and shut down to a 7.64 loss (his first loss in eight years at this event) while Bob's 6.51/222.77 (Top Speed) was enough to reach the final against Gene Snow, who also ran a 6.51 in his win. Snow had just returned to driving after having back surgery. Both cars came to the line for the final, and the starter noticed an oil leak on Snow's car and shut him down. Pickett was signaled to run a single for the win, but he chose to shut down and wait for Snow's crew to fix the leak. After the leak was repaired, they lined up again, and they had a close race with Gene's 6.57/197 edging Bob's 6.58/175.35 for the win. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where a 6.44/199 qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field behind Raymond Beadle's 6.42 in the "Blue Max." Pickett beat Jim Nicoll in the first round, before losing to Denny Savage, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The team also went to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals but failed to reach the finals. Shortly after that, Pickett was at Cayuga Dragway in Canada for the Gold Cup Championships. One thing about this car, the body was bigger than any other Funny Car competing on the track at this time, yet it constantly got Top Speed honors almost everywhere it was raced. At Cayuga, Bob’s first-round 6.59/221.67 set Top Speed while beating Bill Leavitt. He reached the finals against Beadle, but his 6.71/206.42 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.61/182. The car also showed its top-end horsepower in qualifying at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Pickett’s 6.38/231.36 (Top Speed) qualified the car #5. Unfortunately, he got out of shape and shut off in the opening round against Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. It was then off to York's US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where Pickett picked up the win with a final round 6.51 over Al Segrini's 6.89. The team was back at Englishtown for a four-car show that saw Pickett run 6.56/225 over Prock in his first race, but then the Grand Am got sideways in the second round and lost to Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford.” It was back to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in early August. Pickett qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.51/207.37. Another 6.51 in the first round, beat Paul Smith's 6.61, but in the semifinals, he slowed down a tenth to a 6.61/218.97 that lost to eventual winner Prudhomme’s 6.59/222.
