Notes: The car was built in 1968 to replace the scary Dart. Snow's first Logghe car. I think this started with a B&M Torqueflite, but by the end of summer, it had a Crowerglide and began running 200 mph. I know this car ran in the 7's; we need to check the best time. The 205 at OCIR was at the Mfg. Meet, so it is accurate. - Bill McLauchlan | On August 17, at Houston, Snow hit 200.88 for the first 200 MPH funny. At Wichita, 202.70 was the new mark. In October at Irwindale, a 196.50 was good enough for a new track record. - Ron Howard 7.65 at San Antonio in Dart or Charger? - Danny White; Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (Sep. 2007): p. 33 - MB

Notes: Coors was so happy with McEwen in '80 that they stepped up with more cash and a tractor-trailer for '81. Tom was the fourth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 6.31/230.76. He did better at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.368/226.70 qualified #7. An opening round 6.42/216.86 beat Bryan Raines' 6.47/220. Unfortunately, a 6.32 in round two lost to Bob Pickett's 6.27. The following week (March 15), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 6.29/232.55 (Top Speed) qualified #3. But in round one, the car went into hard tire shake and he shut down to a 13.11 in a loss to Raines' 6.34. He was back at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional in May. It was another eight-car field and Tom's 6.41/218.97 qualified #6. He beat Tom Ridings in round one, with a 6.47/231.36, but in the semifinals he had problems and shut off against Craig Epperly. Things went his way on May 30 at NHRA Western Regional at Bandimere. He ran 6.55/214.79 and 6.36/223.88 to beat Clint Miller and Rob Williams to reach the final where he faced Gary Densham. McEwen's 6.35/229.00 got the victory over Densham's 6.48/209.

Notes: Kelly Brown did really well driving this car at its first major event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.904/208.33 and an opening-round 6.89/212.26 beat Leonard Hughes. In round two, he made an easy pass when Bobby Rowe failed to fire. In the semifinals, Brown set Top Speed at 218.97 (6.81) while defeating Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's now Chrysler-powered Mustang at a close 6.96/213. He faced low qualifier Don Schumacher in the final. Don had been running quicker in eliminations, but the final was close. Kelly stepped it up to 6.81 in a runner-up finish to Schumacher's 6.76/218. Early in July, he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. He ran his remarkable 227.27 in qualifying, at the time, the fastest run ever. In the first round, he beat Bob Pickett with a 6.91/213.27, but he fouled against Stan Shiroma in round two. A couple of weeks later, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Only ten cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue, and Brown got the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in the first round, and slowed to a 7.35/153 loss to Gene Snow's 7.05/196. Apparently, Kelly had some extra time on his hands on August 19 when he went to OCIR to test the new "Blue Max" Mustang for Harry Schmidt. Ed Pink was also there to see what the car would do. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.731/221.67 qualified #6, but a troubled 7.32/212.76 in the first round, lost to Jim Dunn's 6.97/200. His next stop was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, the following week (September 10) for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All nineteen cars made just one pass, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Brown ran 6.93/220 to beat Dave Condit's 7.03/214 in the "LA Hooker." His time was the fourth lowest overall. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Amarillo's NHRA Division 4 final. Not long after this, Don Schumacher and then Pat Foster replaced him behind the wheel. Kelly drove the Mr. Ed Charger at NHRA Ontario. We formerly listed a 6.70 for Kelly. Removing that until we get confirmation.

Notes: Third Woody Gilmore car. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 6.47 at 221 for this car in 1973. | We ran back to back 6.30s at 235 at Englishtown 1973, match racing Jungle Jim. This was just the 426 Ramchargers motor, not the 475 inch Ed Pink stroker. We could not make that bigger motor run as well as the smaller Rams motor, although the Snake, Ray Beadle, Pat Foster, and others had luck with it. We had two Ed Pink motors, but ran a tenth and a half slower than the 426. We ran high 6.30s at NY National. We ran 6.39 at Detroit. Then the Ramchargers came out and ran 6.38 to get the track record back. Then we came out and ran 6.36 to take it back again. I stopped racing at the end of 1973. I had developed some ulcer problems and that ended my deal. Too much living out a suitcase and not eating right, etc. Had a chance to race for Mazmanian a year later when Danny Ongais went IndyCar racing, but was having too much fun with my young son and stayed out. Ended up driving display rigs for Mr. Gasket and Bob Glidden, but that was as close as I got to the action again. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15 | Best NHRA national event times of 6.699/214.28 at the 1973 Supernationals.

Notes: The car ran 6.16 under the Care-Free banner. Won the infamous PRO race at NY National with an all-time best of 6.19. Also ran 6.23 at NHRA Summers and 231.95. The 6.01/235 was at a Lebanon Valley match race. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Prudhomme drove this car to Funny Car win at '74 Gators, was upset by Snow at Springs, and defeated Billy Meyer at Indy for back-to-back Indy Funny Car wins. | Regarding Prudhomme at Lebanon Valley in '74. I wasn't there the August night he ran 6.01. I was there a month earlier when he ran 6.16, which was quicker than the national record by a few hundredths, as I recall. So everyone was talking about the great ETs at Lebanon (Mineo had run in the 6.20s with the Coke Circuit that year - unheard-of numbers for him). But then, in '75, Prudhomme's Monza could not go below 6.40. He never ran a 6.0 there again, not with his Monzas, not with his Arrows (he did run in the 'twenties' with the Arrow, maybe the 'teens' once or twice). I asked Tommy Ivo about it, and he said that back in 1974, the track's starting line beams were positioned too high for FCs, and the cars were staging with their fenders, and the clocks weren't starting until after the entire car had left the line and cleared the beams. I don't know if or how this is true, but it's what Ivo told me. Many northeast Funny Car racers were unaware of this explanation, so I don't know why Ivo had the dirt, and the others didn't. - David Hapgood | Prudhomme set the NHRA National Record at E-town with a 6.26. - Danny White | Prudhomme started the year with a new sponsor. The Army sponsorship lasted through the '80 season. The '74 season started at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race on January 12. It was a sixteen-car field, and Don set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.37. He got to the final by running 6.49 in the first round, over John Lombardo, who broke, a 6.51 beat Danny Ongais in round two while a semifinal 6.52/193.96 advanced when Sush Matsubara broke. His final-round opponent was Gordie Bonin in Roland Leong's "Hawaiian." Prudhomme had problems and shut down to 8.19/111.24 in a runner-up finish to Bonin's 6.61/207. He debuted a new John Buttera built Vega at the AHRA Winternationals, which he ran for just two events. Even with the runner-up finish at Beeline, he parked the car after the NHRA Winternationals and went back to his trusty 'Cuda. He had it running at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #2 with a 6.45, but he failed to reach the finals. Don returned to winning ways at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he again qualified #2 with a 6.52/201.34. It was interesting that Prudhomme had been a long-time Goodyear supporter, but he showed up running M&H rubber there. He beat Al Hanna, Dale Emery, and Paul Smith to reach the final against Don Schumacher. In the final, the "Snake" set Low ET with a 6.38 at 225 to win over Schumacher's 6.74. At Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, Prudhomme qualified #4 and then slept on the line in the first round, where his 6.42/217.51 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.55/210. A week later (April 6), he was at OCIR for another AHRA Grand American race. A 6.51/225.66 in qualifying was good for both Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. It was a sixteen-car show, and Don beat Dave Condit in the first round, with a 6.51/220.58, but in round two, he got out of shape against Ed McCulloch and shut off. Another win came at the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at Irwindale. It was supposed to be a 32 car show, but only 30 cars ran. Prudhomme got stronger as the race progressed. He ran 6.67, 6.45, 6.40, and a 6.31 in the semifinals over Schumacher. In the final, he faced Dunn. Don ran a track record 6.28 at 228.42 (Top Speed) for the victory. He also won the AHRA Grand American Nationals at Green Valley Raceway on May 8. The race was supposed to run on May 5, but rain halted the show. The "Snake" qualified #1 with a 6.36. But in round two, he improved to 6.23 while beating Gene Snow. A 6.31 in the semifinals stopped Charlie Therwhanger and advanced Don to the final against Jim Nicoll. Jim ran a good 6.43, but it wasn't even close as Don ran another 6.23 at 234 to win. At the Seattle Northwest Open, Don was running strong again. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.43/191.08. In the first round, he was upset by McCulloch when Don crossed the centerline. Somehow he was reinstated for the semifinals, where the "Snake" beat Mike Miller with a 6.48/175. He faced McCulloch a second time for the final round. Ed had also been running strong with a track record 6.37. In the final, Ed got out of shape and shut off while Don got the win with a 6.55/192. He took home another AHRA trophy at Dragway 42 on May 19. He qualified #1 and then ran 6.39/214.28 in the semifinal over Richard Tharp driving for Schumacher. In the final, Snow fouled against him, and Don set a track record 6.32 for the win. He didn't qualify very well (#8) for the sixteen-car show at the AHRA Springnationals. The race was run at the brand-new Spokane track. This was its first event. But on race day, Don came through. He beat Mert Littlefield and Henry Harrison before dropping Danny Ongais' 6.41 in the semifinals with a 6.36 (Low ET). A final round 6.40/213.76 defeated Tom Hoover, who was now driving Don's former Vega. The next week (June 9) found Don at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.39/224.40. A 6.42/215.82 beat Therwhanger and in round two, a 6.45/193.54 beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen. Another 6.45/216.87 in the semifinals beat Kosty Ivanof, who also smoked the tires. This put Prudhomme in the final against Snow. Gene also ran 6.45 in the semifinals, so it looked to be a good race. But in the final, Don made his worst run of eliminations, a 6.68/215.31 that lost to Snow's 6.46/201. After that, Prudhomme went out and won the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet.

Notes: The 1969 Chi-Town Hustler Dodge Charger was legendary for its long smoking burnouts and tough performance. The team claimed that the car had a 90 percent win-loss record in 1969. Minick did the driving, Austin Coil tuned the engine, and John Farkonas was the behind-the-scenes engineer. The car was built with an offset roll cage for the driver, one of the last funny cars built in that configuration. The Hustler ran a best of 6.96 in 1970 and ran 206 in 1969. US 30 ad claimed a 6.99/219 in 1970. Previously listed 198.23 in 1970. As tough as the car was in 1969, it became outdated by 1971, and a new car had to be built. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com). | A drag racing magazine dated from '70 (due to magazine lead time) claimed that by early '70, Minick had run a best ET of 7.02. The car used a homemade 120" chassis with a 1,600 hp 426 Hemi. American Racing Engines got the credit for building the motor. It used M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons along with an Engle cam. American Racing did the heads as well as the crankshaft. The transmission was a TorqueFlite, and the rear axle ratio was 3.54. The Charger body came from Fiberglass Ltd. | The "Chi-Town Hustler" team started the '70 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. The race featured six Funny Car's running round-robin style. Pat won all three of his races, first getting around a broken Kip Brundage in the "Parts Mart" Camaro with a 7.48/194.80 and then another 7.48 in a solo after Don Schumacher had blown a rear end in his first race and was unable to repair. In his third and final run, Minick really laid one down, running a 7.26/203.60 over a crossed-up Jim Liberman. Minick failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. But he rebounded nicely on February 14, where he competed at Lions. Thirty cars tried to make the eight-car show. Pat not only made the show, but he also won the race with a final round 7.19/204.54 over Don Prudhomme. Earlier, he had beaten Dick Bourgeois in the first round, with a 7.32/201.79 and a 7.37/200.88 beat Liberman in the semifinals. Minick won the Fremont Northern Nationals the next day (February 15). He ran 7.34/200.88 and 7.41/200.88 in the first two rounds before setting Low ET with a 7.18 in the semifinal over Bourgeois' 7.39. In the final, he defeated Liberman's 7.39/200 with a 7.27/205.46. In April, he met Bobby Rowe in the Super Duster for a best two out of three match race at Miami-Hollywood. He beat Rowe in the first two races with times of 7.42/199.55 and 7.38/199.55, but a broken blower drive in the final race kept him from taking a clean sweep. Another match race was run at Capitol on April 17 against Johnny Wright in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. A track record 7.25/199.54 beat Wright in the first race, who fouled on a 7.66/181 run. Minick reset the track record to a 7.19 in his second race and tied the track speed record of 203.60 held by Tommy Grove as Wright fouled again. Johnny got a 7.85/175 win in the final race when Minick's transmission let go. In May, the team traveled way up North to Keystone Dragways near Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he ran a match race against Liberman. Pat beat Jim three straight, setting both ends of the track records with a 7.45/196.92. Shortly after this, the team stopped at Marion, South Dakota, for a best of three match against Marc Susman. Pat won all three races and ran a best of 7.65/188.66. The ET was a new track record. Minick beat Clare Sanders in the final at the UDRA Springnationals. He also won at Epping on June 30 over a 16-car field. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.39/199.10 before running an 8.48/180 in the final to win when Schumacher lost a trans. Pat competed at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car Invitational on July 11, but he fouled away a 7.25/201.34 in the first round. He then won an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat Sanders in the "Super Camaro" in the first round, with a 7.40/194.80, and another 7.40 at 200.00 beat Randy Walls in the semifinal. He saved his best for last when he ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.32/201.46 blast to beat Bryan Teal in Nelson Carter's Charger. Pat won his first race at the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet by out driving Ron Rivero's quicker 7.48 with a 7.52/198.67, but he fouled out in his next two races. On August 2, Minick faced Leonard Hughes in a best two out of three match race at Atco. Pat won two straight with times of 7.44/195.65 and 7.18/199.11 to wrap up the match. The following weekend he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran the first-round, with the eight lowest ET's advancing to the second round. Pat's 7.16/200.44 was the lowest ET in the first round, and he ran 199.11 in the second round over Teal. In the semifinal, he had some luck on his side when Gene Snow fouled away a Low ET and Top Speed 7.06/210.77. Still, Pat's 7.12/185.95 was strong. Larry Arnold lost fire in the final, and Pat motored to a 7.23/199.11 for the victory. Another victory came on August 30 at the Cordova World Series. Pat tied the track record there with a 7.11 Low ET run over Fred Goeske in the semifinals. The next day (August 31), he was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, where he beat Kenny Safford two straight in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Minick's best was a 7.17/218. On September 1, he won an eight-car show at Saginaw. He ran 7.17/204 over Clare Sanders, who lost fire. A 7.23 in the semifinals beat Terry Hedrick's 7.26 in the "Super Shaker." In the final, a 7.13 (Low ET) at 200 took the victory when Connie Kalitta lost a clutch in his Mustang.

Notes: Gene Snow was one of the top '60s funny car stars in his "Rambunctious" Dodges. Snow went through the ranks of Super Stocks, F/Xs, and flip-top funny cars. Even though Gene won the US Nationals twice in a row in '66 and '67 with his Dodge, it was his '69 Mini-Charger was considered one of the top ten funnies of the '60s. The second Charger, the mini-version, replaced the full sized one he debuted at the end of '68. Snow had been working on the direct drive Crowerglide setup and perfected it with the '69 Charger. Snow has never been known to shy away from a new idea. The Mini-Charger ran a best ET of 7.13 at 213.27 mph. With the Crowerglide direct drive unit, the car would leave the line behind the automatic transmission funny cars of the day and charge by them on the big end. The car was one of the first funny cars to top the 200 mph barrier and Snow did it on a regular basis. The chassis for Snow's killer top end direct drive Mini-Charger was built by R&B race Cars of Kenosha, Wisconsin (John Buttera and Dennis Rollain). NOTE: This photo is actually the '68 Logghe car with a new Fiberglass Ltd., molded in red metal flake, '69 Mini-Charger body that Gene ran throughout 1969. This is the car that ran 7.13 at Rockingham, NC. The R&B car was driven by Jake Johnston (see the photo in item 4013). Ran 213.78 at Rockingham NC on 9/69. | A 7.65/199.54 qualified third at the AHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 8. He beat Malcolm Durham with an even better 7.55/202.24 in the first round, but he burned two pistons doing it and was unable to return for the second round. He then went to Dallas on June 15 for the NHRA Springnationals where he made a 7.70/200 qualifying pass and was then told by NHRA officials that the car was disqualified for being too narrow. He ran a best of three match race against Jim Maybeck's Corvair at LaPlace on June 22. He won all three races with runs of 7.79/193.12, and 8.69/196.96 when Maybeck broke. He soloed in the final race, running 7.57 at a track speed record of 204.08. Snow won an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20. He beat Mart Higginbotham in the first round, with a 7.55/163. In the semifinal, a 7.29/204.54 beat Kelly Chadwick's 7.48/194. In the final, he set both ends of the track record with a 7.24/206.88 over Cogo Eads. The following week (September 28) came the AHRA US Open at Rockingham. He won the event over Higginbotham with a 7.13 track record.

He did pretty well with it at Pomona. Don qualified #1 with a 6.14/240.64. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round with a 6.07/225.00. A second-round 6.14 at just 203.61 beat John Collins in Tom McEwen's second car. He got a single in the semifinals when Gary Burgin's car caught fire; Don ran 6.29/216.34. In the final, he ran Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Prudhomme wrapped up the weekend by winning the race with a Low ET and Top Speed run of 6.034/247.25. Despite a great year, these was Don's best NHRA numbers for 1977. The speed was a track record. In March, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Again, he qualified #1, this time with a 6.19/231.36. A first-round 6.38 beat Leon Cain, but in round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Eddie Pauling's 6.09 in Johnny Loper's Monza. The following week (March 13), Prudhomme qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.32. He easily got past the first round and then ran 6.34/228 to beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett in Mickey Thompson's Starfire in round two. In the semifinals, Don faced Roger Lindamood's "Color Me Gone" Monza. Don had him covered performance-wise, as Lindamood qualified #10 and had run 6.51 the round before, but for some reason, Don fouled, giving Roger a free ride into the final. On March 27, the "Snake" beat the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen in the final at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. Irwindale held a big Funny Car show on April 9, and Don was there. He lost before the final and again to Pauling, who was debuting a new Arrow for Johnny Loper. The story here was the times: Pauling won with a 5.97 over Don's 6.31. He made it into the final at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event but lost to Gary Burgin. In mid-June, the "Snake" was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.15. He beat Beadle, Gordie Bonin, and Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" to get into the final, where he faced Pickett. Bob outran Prudhomme's 6.26/236.84 with a 6.22/231, and Don had to settle for the runner-up spot. He got it all together at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with 6.09/238.09 times. He took out Tom Prock in the first round, and a 6.26/227 stopped Ed McCulloch in round two. In the semifinals, a 6.31/220 advanced over a shutting-off Tom Hoover, and in the finals, he was to run Billy Meyer. Meyer broke, and Prudhomme won with a 6.42/186.33 pass. Shortly after that (July 23), he stopped off at Maple Grove for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.17/231.95 and won the race, beating Norm Wilcox driving Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega in the final with a 6.22/222.77. He made a stop at Atco for their Fuel Funny Car Championships. It was a race with all cars making two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Don's first race saw him turn a 6.26/228 (Top Speed) to beat Al Hanna's 6.72 in the "Eastern Raider," while in his second race, he beat R.C. Sherman in the "Black Magic" Vega with a Low ET of the meet 6.22. The other car that made the final was Bruce Larson, whose 6.51 was the second-best time. Based on times, you know the "Snake" was the favorite, but Larson got the jump and won, holding off Prudhomme for the title. Another runner-up effort came at the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7. It featured an eight-car field, and Don set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.17/236.22. The 6.17 tied his own track record. A 6.21/234 in the first round beat Bonin's 6.29/227, and in the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.17 solo pass when Burgin had a fuel pump break. In the final, he ran Hoover and his "Showtime" Monza. Tom won his first NHRA National event with a 6.24/226 over Prudhomme's troubled 6.76/172.08. A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for the PHR Championships. Don singled in the first round, with a 6.11, but in the second round, his 6.22 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.18. He returned to the winner's circle at the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. He was the quickest in qualifying with a 6.06/241.93. In eliminations, he ran 6.14/234.37 in the first round to beat Meyer's 6.28/218. In round two, he ran his best of eliminations, a 6.10/228 to beat Tripp Shumake in John Powers' Camaro. Prock fouled against him in the semifinals, and Don ran 6.13/225 to move into the finals. The car facing him in the final was a bit of a surprise. It was Richard Rogers driving the "Green Elephant." Richard's best time had been a 6.21 in qualifying, so he was at a bit of a disadvantage. Sure enough, Don won the race with a final round 6.24/236.22 to beat Richard's 6.58/205. Another win came soon after when he won the Irwindale Back to School Race by beating Dave Hough's 6.09 in the final with a 6.05/230. He was in Seattle on September 25 for the NHRA Fallnationals, but rain postponed the event, and he did not return for the "rain date." Don had only qualified #7 with a 6.33, very unusual for him. He ran more "normal" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.05. He then made like a bracket racer, running three straight 6.06s to enter the final against Bonin. He faltered in the final, slowing to a 6.36 that lost to Gordie's 6.31. | Did Don run 5.95 somewhere this year? We originally listed 5.955, but the Pomona 6.034 is his quickest confirmed ET. Let us know if you have alternate info.

Notes: Captured top honors at the famed Manufacturers Meet at Orange County International Raceway, where Johnston ran the lowest elapsed time in class history, 6.72, and, in the final, beat Rich Siroonian in Big John Mazmanian's Barracuda on a holeshot, 6.89 to 6.88. Also, Top Speed at the 1970 Winternationals at 203.61. - Phil Burgess, NHRA | Jake started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals on January 25. He made it into the finals by beating Dick Harrell's 7.92 with a 7.70. In round two, Don Schumacher broke a transmission and the "Max" advanced with a 7.77. He got another break in the semifinals when Gene Snow's car started leaking oil and was shut off on the line. Johnston soloed with a 9.16. In the final he was matched against Tommy Grove's strong Cammer powered Mustang. Jake ran a 7.67/198.23 that finished runner-up to Grove's 7.54/196. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.55/201.34 qualified #3. He lasted until round two where Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car dropped him with a 7.44 to Jake's quicker 7.40/203.61 (Top Speed). On February 15 he was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. A first-round 7.32 beat Dick Bourgeois' 7.42 in Don Cook's Corvette. But in round two he fouled against Jim Liberman. The following week (February 22), he won the third OCIR All-Pro event. Johnston actually lost to Gene Conway's 7.33/200 in the first round, with a quicker 7.28/181.08, but he got back in on the "break rule" as Low ET loser when Dave Beebe broke. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 7.26/170.77 over a fouling Clyde Morgan. In the final, he ran Conway again and a 7.37/189.47 took the win over Gene's quicker 7.35/201. | Best NHRA times were 7.361/201.34. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/70

Notes: This is Don's first Buttera Cuda that made its debut in late 1970 replacing his Ron Scrima built car. This car was originally painted yellow using the same design that was on Don's first Hot Wheels car. Don was low qualifier at the 1970 NHRA Hot Wheels Supernationals with a 7.044/200.00, losing to Richard Tharp in the first round, (Don's Top Fuel car also qualified number 1 with Butch Maas at the wheel). At the 1970 OCIR Manufacturer's Championships Don ran consistent 6 second ETs (6.93/6.91/6.89) and had Top Speed of the meet (217.91 mph) while helping Plymouth win the overall team championship. Don also won the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on 12/12/70, running a track record 6.92 ET at 192.70. This car was painted white with red flames for the start of the 1971 season and ran successfully for almost two years.

Notes: rnrnHenry's first NHRA national event with the M/T car was the Springnationals in Dallas, where he ran 6.929/211.26 for the #6 spot. He won round one with a 6.98/206.42 when Mat Higgenbotham crossed the centerline. Henry defeated Richard Tharp in round two, 6.84/214.29 to 6.94/206.42. In round three, he lost a close one to Kelly Brown, 6.81/218.97 to 6.86/213.27. At Indy, he was the number one qualifier at 6.541/226.70, which stood as the Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. In round one, Henry won at 7.03/209.30 when Shirley Muldowney smoked the tires. He took a 10.81 single in round two when Don Schumacher could not start on time. In round three, M/T teammate Dale Pulde took a 6.86/205.94 to 7.26/143.43 win. That was Henry's last NHRA national event of the year. | In 1971, Henry Harrison was the number one qualifier, set low elapsed time and Top Speed at the US Nationals in one of Mickey Thompson's cars. His 6.541 was the quickest run to date in a Funny Car and his 226.70 miles per hour blast was simply unheard of. - Bob Frey | The Setzer/Kelly Brown Vega went 227.27 earlier that year; it was even a cover story in HRM. - Joe Moore

Notes: Long Nose 85/86. Photo from Milan, MI, IHRA Northern Nats 85. Set NHRA ET records at 5.646 at 85 Gators and 5.569 at 1985 Maple Grove. Low qualifier at 1985 Gators with a 5.672. Ran 258.76 at 85 World Finals. | Kenny started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing in January. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a new track record 5.74 at 248.61 (Top Speed). Kenny made his way into the final by beating Tom McEwen with a 5.84/248.61 and a tire-smoking single in the semifinals when Paul Smith was unable to run after a first-round fire. He met John Collins in the final and the "Budweiser King's" reverser failed so Collins got to solo for the victory. The following week, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.74/254.09 qualified #4 and in round one, a 5.80/259 beat Jim Head. Bernstein ran a career-best (to this point) 5.67 at 235.60 in round two, but he lost to Rick Johnson who was running a 5.58/263 in the "Hawaiian." He was in Atlanta for an eight-car show in March where his 5.81/250.00 qualified in the #2 spot. In the first round, Mark Oswald stepped up from a qualifying 5.91 to a 5.72/248 in the "Candies and Hughes" car to beat his 5.85/249.30. Things clicked for the team at the NHRA Gatornationals. Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.67/261.78 (Top Speed). Frank Hawley broke a transmission in the first round, in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and Bernstein advanced with a 6.25/226.92. In round two, his 5.71/251.81 beat Tom Hoover and a semifinal NHRA record-setting 5.64 at 256.70 took out Collins' tire shaking Camaro. He faced John Lombardo driving Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" in the final. John had problems and shut down while Kenny ran 5.70/254.09 for the win. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Once again, he ran well, lasting until the semifinals where his 5.80/247 lost to Oswald's 5.78/260. Another NHRA title came at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals in April. Kenny's 5.72/254.09 qualified #1, and he worked his way to the final by stopping a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.81/249.03. In round two, a 5.80/249.58 ended Jody Smart's chances and a 5.75/254.66 got around Don Prudhomme's off-pace 6.12/204 in the semifinals. His final-round opponent was Ed "the Ace" McCulloch. There was no stopping Bernstein on this day as his track record 5.69 at 252.95 got the victory over Ed's 5.81/247. While he was running strong in NHRA, he was still not able to reach the final in IHRA competition. At the second race of the season, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, he got another semifinal finish when Billy Meyer's 5.88/250 beat his 5.95/243. Bernstein's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. His 5.74/247.93 qualified #2 behind Pulde's similar 5.74/251. He beat McCulloch in round one, with a 5.83/243.90. In round two, a 5.76/245.49 beat Oswald, but in the semifinals, Kenny lost an engine on a 6.09/185 pass that beat a tire-smoking John Force. The team replaced the engine for the final where he ran Head. Something wasn't, buttoned up right as the "Budweiser King" broke on the line and Head soloed for the race win. His IHRA semifinal streak continued at Bristol for the Springnationals. There, he set Low ET in the semifinals with a 5.66 at 258, but he lost to eventual winner Pulde whose quick-leaving 5.69/257 won. Things were better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 at 5.75/248.48, and then a track record 5.73 at 251 beat Al Segrini and in round two, his 5.74/249.03 got around a tire spinning Pulde. Another 5.74 at 248.48 beat an out of shape Prudhomme in the semifinals. This matched Kenny up against Texas neighbor Meyer in the final. Billy overpowered the track and went up in smoke while Bernstein won his third NHRA race of the season with a 5.81/251.25. The team's next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kenny's 5.67/249.30 (Top Speed) qualified #2 behind Pulde's 5.66/249. In the first round, Bernstein set Low ET with a track record 5.65 at 249.30 to beat Chuck Etchells. A semifinal 5.78/243.24 advanced over Tim Grose. This paired him up against Pulde in the final. Kenny had traction issues and Pulde won with a 5.90/247. Another runner-up finish came at the NHRA Grandnationals. There, he only ran 5.85/246.94 to qualify #10. Both he and Grose ran 5.84 (the Bud car at 244.96), but Kenny got the win light. In round two, Oswald fouled against him and Kenny blew an engine while advancing with a 5.85/240.12. The team swapped out a new engine for the semifinal and it improved the car to a 5.69/252.52 to beat Prudhomme's 5.80/256. He faced Johnson in the final and despite running a 5.79/250.13, Rick picked up his first NHRA National event victory with a 5.72/260. The following week (July 7), he had some bad luck at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #4 for the show, but attempted another run. Something let go and the car turned into a fireball. Kenny got it stopped and was OK, but the car was damaged badly and was unable to run in eliminations. With a team this strong, they didn't miss a beat, showing up at Englishtown the next week for the NHRA Summernationals. Bernstein set Low ET with a track record 5.62 at 234 in qualifying number one. He then ran 5.90, 5.85, and 5.76 at 249.58 to beat McEwen, Pulde, and John Force (in that order). In the final, he went up against Grose, and Bernstein's 5.77/249.58 scored the win over Grose's 5.80/250. Best NHRA times were the 5.569 at Maple Grove and 261.78 at the Gators. Ran 5.714/250.69 in winning IHRA Cincinnati over Dale Pulde, snapping Dale's four-win streak.

Notes: First funny car in the fours. First member of the Castrol 4-Second Club for Funny Cars on October 1/1993, with a 4.987 at the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals in Topeka, Kan. Terrible & terrific year in 1993: crew chief Yingst died during NHRA Slick 50 Nats in Spring, rebounded to make historic pass in Fall. Photo from Columbus 1993. | Chuck started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.14/285.44, but in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Del Worsham. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, his 5.41/265.01 qualified #10. He improved to 5.22/272.39 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.15/287. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Slick 50 Nationals. Etchells qualified #5 with a 5.16/270.59 and in round one, his 5.14/286.35 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.46/275. In the second round, both he and Cruz Pedregon ran 5.22 (Chuck at 276.83), but Cruz crossed the finish line first. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, Chuck ran 5.30/277.86 to qualify #8. His 5.21/274.30 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.28/281 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, but he broke against Hofmann in round two. He went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational and qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.27/266.03. But in the first round, while faced Bonin, Chuck did his burnout and then was unable to back up after his reverser failed. After having such a rough time in the first few events, things went a little more his way at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.09 at 291.07. In the first round Caminito fouled against him and Etchells advanced with a 6.05/167.09. Round two saw Whit Bazemore fail to show and Chuck soloed to a 5.26/271.41. In the semifinals, he and his opponent, Freddie Neely smoked the tires with Chuck recovering first with a 5.49/265.95 over Freddie's 5.69/262. This put him into the final against Force. Unfortunately, John got the victory. The sixth NHRA race of the season was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Etchells qualified #4 for the show with a 5.29/277.60. An easy 5.66/207.75 in round one, beat Brent Fanning, but in round two he lost a close race to Bonin. Gordie's 5.26/285 nipped his 5.27/274.97. At the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, Chuck qualified #2 with a 5.04/288.46 just behind Force's 5.01/289. Etchells beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.18/281.69 while in round two his 5.22/279.32 took out Kenji Okazaki. A semifinal 5.27/265.17 topped Tom Hoover's close 5.30/283 and moved him into the final against Force. Once again, John stopped him in the final. Force won with a 5.14/290 while Etchells was busy smoking his tires to an 8.01/104.69 for the runner-up spot. On May 28 these two faced off in a best of three match race at the 1/8 mile Lancaster track. Things didn't go well for Etchells as he lost two straight with times of 4.13/170 and 3.92/178 while Force ran a best of 3.73. Repeated his 299.50 from Topeka at when he set Top Speed at Ennis Fall 1993.

He knew his stuff as he qualified #11 with a 6.05. Unfortunately, he slowed to a 6.36 in the first round, that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.34. In August, he was at US 131 Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He lasted until the semifinals when his quicker 6.03 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.07 in the "Blue Max."

Notes: In January, Gary debuted his new Mustang at OCIR for the Grand Premiere event. Unfortunately, in the car's first run in the competition, it smoked the tires to 7.94 in a first-round loss to eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was in Tucson later in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme, but in the first round, he was upset by eventual winner Ed Moore with his 6.53/223.32 losing to Ed's 6.37/225. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.10/237.46 to qualify #12. A 6.11/243.24 beat Prudhomme's 6.31/185 in the first round, but in round two, Segrini left first and hung on to record a 6.30/233 victory over Gary's 6.29/227.27. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.08/238.72. In the first round, he had problems and slowed to a 6.77/194.38 that lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.32/229. After that, Burgin stopped at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, but he lost to John Pott in the first round. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in April. Gary was there, but he took a little nap in the first round, and his 6.04 lost to Frank Hawley's 6.10 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was back in Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he ran 6.09/240.00 to qualify #7. In the first round, he smoked the tires against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" and shut off to a 10.56 while Beadle advanced with a 5.88. He was at Rockingham on May 2 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he lost in the first round. This time, Segrini took him out. Gary made it past the first round at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified last in the eight-car show with a 6.24/237.46. In the first round, he advanced with a 6.19/243 when Dale Pulde had problems on the line and shut off. He faced Beadle in the semifinals and fouled against him. The following week (June 6), St. Louis hosted the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Burgin went all the way, winning this one. He qualified #3 with a 6.17 and a 6.24/237.47 beat Ron Correnti in round one. In the semifinals, his 6.29/231.96 beat Tom Hovland, and in the final, a 6.34/230.77 beat Tom Hoover's 6.49/215. After his first big win of the year, it was strange to see his name among the non-qualifiers at the NHRA Springnationals. His best of 6.30/236.22 was good for the third alternate. He did make the field at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on June 20. His 6.06 qualified on the "bump" spot of the eight-car show. Burgin lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Tom Anderson. He was runner-up to Beadle on June 27 for Brainerd's US Funny Car Championships. Another win came at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.02/239.36 behind Prudhomme's track record 5.97. He beat John Force in round one with a 6.19/229.00. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.14/233.16 when Hovland broke. In the final, he faced Prudhomme and the "Snake" shut off with problems while Burgin won with a 5.99/234.98. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.00/244.56 qualified #7, and he ran well, lasting until the semifinals. Burgin won the US Funny Car Nationals at Maple Grove. He reset the track record to 5.93 and had Top Speed of the meet at 235.60. A final round 6.004/227.27 narrowly beat Segrini's 6.010/232.55. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Gary ran 5.91/244.56 to qualify #3. He beat Beadle in the first round with a 5.97/246.57, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Segrini. He then made the trip to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Gary's 5.88/248.61 qualified #6. He beat Mike Dunn driving the "Hawaiian" and Anderson in the first two rounds, and a semifinal 5.93/243 beat a tire-smoking Ken Veney in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and Meyer's semifinal win came with a 5.94, so it was expected to be close. Unfortunately, Burgin overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Billy ran 5.91 for the victory. After a great runner-up finish at Indy, it was surprising to see his name among the non-qualifiers at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. It was an eight-car field, but Gary was definitely having problems as the best he could run in qualifying was 6.12/234. It took a 6.04 to make the show. Things went better at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, but not by much. He qualified #15 with a 6.10/235.60 and an opening-round 6.11/237.46, lost to Beadle's 6.05/238. He was back at OCIR for its Manufacturer's Meet in November. Burgin made a warm-up pass and ran 5.99 but lost to Dunn and Billy Meyer in his first two races. Photo from 1982 GVRC match race. | Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore | 6.005 253.15 in the first round, beat Mike Dunn in the semis and ran 6.061 falling to Don Prudhomme at AHRA US 30 1982 (Runner Up) (Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds)

Notes: Bob Pickett debuted Mickey Thompson's newly painted Grand Am at the Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The car was still unlettered for the race. The team had trouble getting the car to "stick" as Pickett smoked the tires in all three of his runs. He won his first race where his 8.56/148.27 beat Raymond Beadle's even more smoked in 10.40 in the "Blue Max." A second-round 8.32 lost to Norm Wilcox's 6.51 in the "Hawaiian," and a 7.09 in his last race lost to Gary Burgin's 6.63. The team skipped both the AHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Winter Classic, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.301/187.50 qualified #10. But an opening-round 6.655/209.79 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.411/210.77. Shortly after that (February 21), he was at OCIR for its East/West meet. Six cars were competing that were to make three runs each. In Pickett's first race, his 6.38/214.28 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.48/232. The Grand Am broke in the second race and lost to Don Prudhomme. He won his third race easily as his opponent, Tommy Ivo, crossed the centerline. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob's 6.521/230.17 qualified #11, and in the first round, his 6.57/225.00 beat Beadle, who smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 (see linked video). A second-round 6.65/221.13 beat Tom Hoover's 6.74/220.04, but tire smoke did him in in the semifinals, where his 7.09/193.96 lost to Shirl Greer's 6.50/206.42. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Bob's next stop was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He qualified #1 at 6.40/240.37 (Top Speed). The 240 may not have been totally legit, but Bob ran 230/235 several times during the year. Pickett lasted until round two before his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.31. The following weekend, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. It was supposed to be a 32-car show, but only 30 cars showed. All were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. A 6.62/196.50 beat Bryan Raines in the first race, and he ran a decent 6.38/225.56 in the second race, but he lost to Gary Densham's 6.31/202. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. Early in May, he stopped off at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.40 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.20. He improved to 6.26/225.56 in the opening round over John Collins' 6.49/202. Unfortunately, he fouled to McCulloch in the semifinal. The next day (May 9), Bob was in Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56/215.82 qualified #5. An easy 6.89/209.30 beat Nick Harmon in the first round. He was a tad late in round two, and his 6.46/223.32 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.52/216. The M/T car was at St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals in the first week of June. He qualified #5 for the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Bob's 6.60/191.82 lost to McEwen's 6.33/221. The following week, Pickett was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.500/226.70 qualified #5. His 6.485/229.00 in the first round beat Larry Arnold's 6.506/196.07. Prudhomme stopped him again in round two; the "Snake's" 6.378/206.42 dropped his 6.411/222.22. Bob qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.598/206.89. He lost a close one to Dodger Glenn in round one, 6.837/213 to 6.879/217. He was the first alternate at Indy at 6.295/220.04 but was the fifth qualifier at Seattle at 6.269/199.55. Tom McEwen upset him in round one, 6.40/213.27 to 6.41/229.00. Bob qualified #3 at the World Finals at 6.214/233.76. He beat McEwen in round one, 6.195/233.16 to 6.698/158.73. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42. Don Prudhomme nipped him in the semis with a 6.251/220.04 to 6.326/230.17 decision. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner.

Notes: Jim qualified #13 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.23. He lost in the first round. He was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he again qualified #13 with a 6.01/246.57. He lost to Tom McEwen in the first round. Early in May, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Head's 6.02/241 qualified #7. In the opening round, he defeated Eric Caskey's BB/FC with a 6.03/250.00. Raymond Beadle smoked the tires in the "Blue Max" in round two, and Jim advanced with a 6.09/250.69. In the semifinal, his off-pace,6.30/240, fell to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.73/252. As mentioned, he did well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3, and in round one, his 6.02/246 beat Frank Hawley's 6.01/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He then beat Al Segrini in the second round with a 5.99/245. In the semifinals, a 6.08/245 beat a tire-smoking Mark Oswald. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and despite a good 6.01/245.90 run, he lost to Meyer's better 5.92/249. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen car field, and his 5.98/243 qualified #15. Unfortunately, his 6.07/240.00 in the first round lost to Denny Savage's 5.97/248. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan's US 131, Jim ran a 5.77 track record to qualify first in the sixteen-car show. He stayed strong with a first-round 5.78 over Tom Hoover. In round two, a 6.06 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.13. His 6.10 in the semifinal fell to eventual winner Hawley's." He went from top qualifier to the last qualifier when he ran 6.00/247.25 to qualify #16 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 6.07/243.90 lost to Beadle's 5.97/238. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Nationals on June 24, and Jim qualified #4 for the eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30. But in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, he qualified #9 with a 5.92/250.00. He failed to reach the finals. The following weekend (July 8), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Jim was running really well here as his 5.73/257.87 (#4) in qualifying attests. In the first round, his 5.76/250 beat Bob Gottschalk's 6.09/247. He turned some heads in round two, where his 5.68/260.86 beat Tom McEwen's 5.81/235. In the semifinal, he slowed to 5.80/257.87, which lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.81/255. After such a great performance, Englishtown was not so great. His 5.91/250.69 qualified #14 for the NHRA Summernationals, and he lost to Hawley in the first round. Jim surprised everyone by winning the prestigious US Nationals over Kenny Bernstein. His best NHRA times were 5.844 at Brainerd and 255.68 at Indy. Notes: This is the Snake's first Buttera car, first raced at '70 Ontario Supernationals. Painted yellow for the remainder of 1970, the white paint job followed in early '71. (This is the car that flew through the lights in Seattle on fire). The white car ran 6.62 at 226 at OCIR in early '71, all-time bests for FCs to that point. Also ran then second quickest ever ET at 6.67 at the Northwest National Open 71. Said to be trying for the sport's first 6.5 when he flew it through the lights on fire. | Don started the '71 season with a runner-up finish at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He worked his way to the final by beating Charlie Proite's "Telstar" in the first round, with a 7.34/189.06. In round two, a 7.06/214.78 beat Paula Murphy's 7.40/204. The semifinals saw him dip into the sixes with a 6.98/206.42 over Kenney Goodell. In the finals, he ran Gene Snow and Snow set Low ET with a 6.83/212 to take the victory over the "Snake's" 6.99/214.78. On January 10 he was at Lions for the AHRA Grand American. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Don's 6.78 was third among the "unseeded" entries. A first-round 6.88/212.26 beat Mart Higginbotham's 7.19/205. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in the second round and let Leroy Goldstein advance. Prudhomme was at the second OCIR All-Pro event and where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.70. An opening round 6.94/187.89 beat Jim Dunn, but in the semifinals, his transmission locked in reverse giving Gene Conway a solo into the final. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Don qualified pretty far down the list with a 7.28/187.47 (#14). He broke in the first round, and lost to Stan Shiroma in the "Midnight Skulker." The third OCIR All-Pro event was run on February 13. Prudhomme turned in an amazing performance to win. He qualified for the eight-car field with a 6.96/223.88. In the first round, he improved to 6.82/223.88 to beat Dunn. A semifinal 6.71/225.00 beat Gene Snow's 7.10/169. He ran Dunn again in the final who had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" twice! There was no denying the "Snake" on this day as in the final he ran an unheard of 6.62/226.13 to win. Around this time, Prudhomme had been driving his Top Fuel car as well as the Funny. At a lot of meets, he ran either one or the other. At Bakersfield for the March Meet, he ran his dragster. On March 21 he was at Fresno for a best of three match race against the "Hawaiian," driven by Butch Maas. Butch won the first race with a 7.08/211 over Don's 7.23/214.28, but Prudhomme came back to even things up by winning the second race with a 6.93/211.26 over the "Hawaiian's" 6.99. In the deciding race, Maas won the match with a 6.88 over the "Snake's" quicker 6.85. Due to this match race being run on the same day as the Gatornationals, Prudhomme was obviously not at Gainesville. Everyone remembers the pictures of Don's 'Cuda on fire on two wheels going through the traps at Seattle. That was on April 11 for the Northwest National Open. Don qualified third behind Maas and Jerry Ruth. He blew a clutch in the semifinals while setting Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.67/221.66 over the "Hawaiian." In the final, he again had problems (to put it mildly), and went through the traps on fire to win with a 6.94 over Dave Condit's 6.98 in the "L. A. Hooker." In May, Prudhomme won the Continental Divide Spring Funny Car race. He beat Art Ward in the final with a new track record 7.470. Martin, Michigan, held an eight-car show over the Memorial Day Weekend and Prudhomme ran well. All eight-cars were to make three runs with the winner being determined by the car that got the most wins. Don had problems and was unable to make his first race, but he came back to win his second with a 7.13/200.89 over Richard Tharp's 7.15/198 in the "Blue Max." He really raised some eyebrows in the third race where he beat Gary Dyer with a 6.62/220.58 (Low ET and Top Speed).
