Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Kosty was the #1 qualifier at the Gatornationals with a 6.51, but lost in the first round, when he launched the body off his car high into the air at the top end of the track. Ran 6.44 at Columbus, 6.44 at Indy. | Kosty was at New England in July for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with a 6.60/207, but he broke against Fred Bickford in the first round. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he failed to qualify. His next stop was at Maple Grove for it's All-American series race. It was a sixteen-car show and in the opening round his 6.61/165 beat Dodger Glenn's 6.66/195 in the "Frantic Ford." A 6.50/197.80 beat Jimmy King's 6.81/202 in round two, and he got an easy single in the semifinals when Ed McCulloch broke a brake caliper and was unable to stage. This put him in the final against Bill Leavitt. The two had a good race with Kosty's 6.45/217.91 getting the victory over Leavitt's 6.55/200. Then he went to York's US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. Unfortunately, an off-pace 7.03/193.93 lost to Tom Prock's 6.95/213 in the first round. The following week (August 4) he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 6.65/210.77 qualified #3 for the eight-car show. In round one, Billy Meyer had problems and shut off while Ivanof advanced with a 6.61/208.81. In the semifinals he got a good leave and his 6.78/215.31 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.71/214. The final saw the "Boston Shaker" break and Shirl Greer won his first NHRA National event with a single. New York National hosted the PRO National Challenge race on August 18. Only 21 cars showed for the 32 car field and Kosty was one of them. But in the first round, he lost to a quick-leaving Charles Lee who's 7.10/197 beat his quicker 7.06/212.76. He qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.44/207.37. A 6.48 in the first round, beat Smith's 6.58, but the car failed to fire in round two for his race against Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." Ivanof was back at New England for the Eighth Annual Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car field and a first-round 6.65/188 advanced when Al Hanna driving the "Eastern Raider" failed to fire. In round two, his 6.44/214 beat Glenn's badly crossed, up Mustang II. But in round three, Tommy Grove set a track record 6.31 while beating Kosty's 6.48. Ivanof got a second shot at it when Grove suffered some burnt pistons and was unable to return for the semifinal. Ivanof replaced him, but he wasn't able to capitalize on it as he was shut off on the line with an oil leak giving his opponent, Al Segrini, a solo into the final.

Notes: Gordie started the year in the Hawaiian, but started driving the Pacemaker Vega in March. His first NHRA national event was the Grandnational at Sanair. He qualified #8 on the bump with a 6.813/212.76. Al Segrini beat him in round one, 6.65/218 to 6.809/215.82. Gordie qualified #9 at Indy with a 6.446/227.84. He lost to Billy Meyer in round one, 6.22/217 to 6.597/212.26. Bonin qualified #13 at the Ontario Supernationals at 6.482/220.04. He lost to Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.42/216 to 6.558/226.13. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1974. Also ran 6.49 at Tri-City. We formerly listed a 6.425. We need to validate that Gordie ran that time in 1974.

Notes: Al won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lebanon in July. He ran a strong 6.52/218 in the semifinals to beat Gordon Mineo and a final round 6.53/219.50 got the victory over Mineo who returned under the "break rule" when David Ray crashed in the semifinals. Also ran 6.52 Maple Grove.

Notes: Don Schumacher yellow Cuda. Car 1 of 3 car team. Don ran really well in '72. His season started at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until round two, where he got out of shape and clicked it off in a loss to Gene Snow. His next stop was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.89, but he had problems in the opening round and lost to Roger Lindamood. Schumacher was at Lakeland early in March for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #5 with a 6.91. He beat Paul Aray's Maverick in the first round, with a 7.14, but in round two, the 'Cuda broke a rear-end giving eventual winner Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" a solo into the semifinals. The following week (March 12) found the team at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, the gremlins persisted, and he broke in the first round, against Henry Harrison, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Vega. It was then off to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's 6.80 qualified #5 and a first-round 6.79/196 beat Lindamood. In the second round, he smoked the tires to a 7.09/161 loss to Pat Foster's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.52/225 in the Barry Setzer Vega. Another round two loss came at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham, where he lost to Dale Pulde driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. The trend continued at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. He only qualified #13 with a 7.41. Schumacher stopped a blower-popping Charlie Therwhanger in the first round, but his off-pace 7.72 in round two lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, it was more of the same. A 6.80 qualified #4, and he beat Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" in the opening round with a 6.88/198, but as usual, a second-round 7.16/168 lost to Butch Maas' 6.74/203. Finally, the following week (June 18), he won at Bristol. Traction wasn't great as 26 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and none got into the "sixes." Don's 7.24 qualified #4, and he picked up to 7.09/211.76 in the first round, to beat Fritz Callier in the "CKC" Vega. It was probably a relief when he beat Dave Mudrack driving the "Warhorse" in round two with a 7.12/204.54. He cracked the "sixes" in the semifinals with a 6.99/214.28 over Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. But final round opponent Jim Paoli driving the "Ramchargers" car, had run a 6.97 in his semifinal race, so it was close. Sure enough, the two had a good race down to the wire with the "Shoe's" 7.01/206.42 getting the victory over the "Rams'" 7.07/215. A few days later, he won over an eight-car field at Union Grove, where he set both ends of the track record with a 6.47/227 (I hope I got this right as reporters often saw Schumacher's name on the side of the car and assumed that it was him. Bobby Rowe liked to drive it out the back door, but the report claimed it was Schumacher). Another win followed this one at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Don qualified #5 with a 6.64 and an improved 6.57 beat the "Ramchargers" car, which Clare Sanders was now driving. In round two, Ron Potter fouled against him, and in the semifinals, he beat 1972's "killer car," the "Trojan Horse" driven by Larry Fullerton. In the first two rounds, the car had just run 6.40/228 and 6.56/225. But Larry's off-pace 7.37/212 lost to Don's 6.63/214.79. In the final, he faced another "killer car" of the '72 season, the Demon of Ed McCulloch. Ed "slowed" to a 6.84/217 in the final after earlier running as quick as 6.51, and Schumacher picked up the win with a 6.63/213.76. The following weekend (July 22), he was at Martin Michigan for an eight-car show. McCulloch got a bit of payback there as he beat Schumacher in the first round. The next day they were at Rockford for the Manufacturer's Meet. Don had run some good times, such as 6.72 (over Fullerton) and 6.78 (over Tommy Grove), and the final came down to McCulloch and him. Once again, McCulloch got the measure of Don with a 6.87/217 beating his 7.01/215.82. Don ran 6.657/219.51 at the Tulsa PRA race. Formerly listed 220.00 for Don's best speed, if it turns out that the Union Grove 227 was Rowe.

Notes: Won IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas International Motor Speedway in early June by defeating Pat Foster. Richard ran 6.37/225.00 against Pat's 6.40/227.27. Came out with flamed paint job later in the year. Ran 6.671/213.27 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge 8/72. | Tharp won the Miami Funny Car race on Jan 9. It was a sixteen-car field and in the final, the "Max" dropped Jerry Jokerst's Firebird. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, almost 40 cars showed for the sixteen spots and Tharp headed the list of qualifiers with a 6.70. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.57 beating Jerry Ruth. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the second round and crossed the centerline while racing Gene Snow. The team did a lot of match racing for a cash guarantee, but when they showed up at the national events, they were a team worth watching. On March 6 they were at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Harry Schmidt and Tharp woke up to find that someone had "borrowed" their transporter. The police found it in time for the team to race, but a complete engine plus an extra blower and injector were gone. They had to borrow parts to race. After piecing together an engine, Richard goes out and runs a 6.62, good enough for the pole. A first-round 6.81 beat Jake Johnston's 6.87. In round two the "Max" got a solo when Don Schumacher broke a rear end. In the semifinals, a 6.61 (Low ET) beat a crossed up Arnie Behling in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In the final, Tharp grabbed the victory with a 6.86 over Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto.

Notes: Liberman was known for putting a bunch of mix-matched engine parts together and making it run. He was running in a race and hurt something and not have the parts. Another racer might have this or that, and Liberman would throw it together and go win the race! Other times it would just blow up, but he was always a positive individual. The glass was always half full. His house was always open for other racers to stay, and they often did. His '72 season started with a win in February at the Miami-Hollywood Winter Championships. Gary Henderson, driving the "Super Duster," broke against him in the final. He competed at the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland, where he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.72/213.27. He beat Wayne Mahaffey in the first round, with a 6.91/213.27, but in round two, he got crossed up and shut down against Dale Pulde, driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Early in April, Jim was at Englishtown for a four-car show. He won all three of his races, running a 6.85/199.11 over Sammy Miller, a 6.78/215.31 over a motor blowing Jimmy King, and a 6.69/216 over Butch Maas driving the "Motown Shaker." An Atco match race time of 6.59/237.46 from July 12, 1972, would have been the fastest of the year and is pretty dubious. That date also would have been the Thursday before Englishtown, which is pretty suspect (the NHRA event ran from July 13 to July 16, 1972). The next fastest car in 1972 was Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer machine, who went 6.29/235.64 at the Supernationals in the fall and is recognized as the actual speed winner this year. (Info taken from an article on ATCO's 7th Annual Funny Car Championships, January 1973 issue of Rodder and Super Stock magazine. - Tom). Jim qualified #10 at the NHRA Summernationals with the Camaro at 6.745/214.79 but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, 6.89/205 to 7.92/110. At some point after Englishtown, he switched to a new Palamides-built Vega. He qualified #14 (#9 for the East) at NHRA Amarillo (no time), and Jim won the first round over Twig Ziegler, 7.01/200.89 to 8.23/109. But Jim fell off to the eights in round two and lost to Jake Johnston, 6.61/220 to 8.03/195.22. He ran a confirmed 6.74/227 at Epping Grand American 1972 and won the Epping Funny Car Nats in late 1972 at 6.54/218.97. We need to validate whether Jim ran the post-Summernationals events in the Camaro or the new Vega. Jim ran the Vega at NHRA Ontario.

Notes: Cecil Lankford and David Sien had raced a Hardy-built Camaro in '71. For the '72 season, they switched to a 120" Don Hardy chassised Mustang. The body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. Brand X #2. Dragway 42 hosted the IHRA Summernationals on August 20, and Lankford qualified for the show, but he fouled against Shirley Muldowney in the first round. Cecil was at Rockingham on September 18 for the IHRA US Open Championships. In the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 7.09/206.42 lost to Ron Potter's 6.95/195.

Notes: Won INDY. Silver and Black Vette. Also 6,264 232.55 at 78 Winters and 231.95 at 78 Springnationals. Ran 6.05/235.60 in big Indy win over Prudhomme. This car was sold to Dick Moritz then to Jamie Hopheimer/Whit Bazemore and to Donnie Holbrook and to Troy Ray. | McEwen started his season at the OCIR Super Bowl event in February Unfortunately, he had problems against Raymond Beadle driving the Blue Max" and shut down to a 10.54 loss in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's 6.26/232.55 qualified #5. He beat Dave Condit's 6.45/216 in the first round, with a 6.32/220 and in round two his 6.42/216 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. It was a good old "Snake vs. Mongoose" semifinal that saw the "Goose" have problems and slow to 7.63/137 loss to Don Prudhomme's 6.41/229. He then laid low and the "English Leather" Corvette was not seen again until early May when he showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a eight-car field and his 6.29/194.80 qualified #3. He improved by a tenth in round one where his 6.19/216.86 defeated Jim Moore's 6.79/164. He blasted low qualifier,Gordie Bonin in the emi-final with a 6.22/221.67 that put the Firebird's 6.41/230 on the trailer. He faced the "Snake" in the final and the two old pals had a great race that saw Don get the victory with a 6.11/238 over Tom's 6.18/217.91.The following week(May 13), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race.A 6.20 qualified #4 but in the opening round, he extremely late 6.07/217.91 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.29/229.Shortly after that, he was at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was supposed to be a eight-car show but a field was a couple cars short.McEwen got to solo in the first round and he did, running 6.19/206.89.For some reason, he was given another solo in the semifinal and this time he shut down at 6.95. Once again he was up against Prudhomme in the final. This time the two didn't get a chance to race as Tom had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure so the "Snake" solo'ed with a 10.17 for the win. His next stop was Detroit Dragway for the UDRA North American Grandnationals. All cars ran the first round "qualifying" that had the eight lowest ET cars reguardless of winning or losing advance in the first round of actual competition.Tom set low Et with a 6.23. In the first round of actual competition, he advanced with a 6.34/194.38. In the semifinal, the car again lost oil pressure and the "Goose" had to shut it down on the line against Tom Prock. He ended the month of May at the three day Drag Racing Olympics at Union Grove. He made sure everyone knew that he was there. On Friday, May 27, he qualified for the final four with a 6.36. In the semifinal, he dropped the Pete Williams driven, "Chi-Town Hustler's" 6.32 with a 6.29. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the results were the same.Don's 6.14/229 beat his 6.19/221.67. On Saturday, he qualified for the final four with a 6.23.There were eighteen cars attempting to qualify.Tom's time was the third best. But this time the "Snake" got to him in the semifinal.Don's 6.10/236 trailed the Corvette's 6.22/223.32. On Sunday, the field swelled to twenty four cars.Tom qualified for the final four with a second quickest 6.24. He beat Bob Pickett's 6.43/225 in the semifinal with a 6.32/201.34.Low and behold, he faced Prudhomme in yet another final round. But this time, the "Snake" got out of shape and had to shut off while McEwen ran 6.28/222.22 for the victory. It was then off to St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.A 6.41/211.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat a tire smoking Gene Snow in the opening round with a 6.48/212.76. In the semifinal, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires but the "Goose's" 7.16 came out on top. He faced his protege, John Collins in the final. The two had a good race with the student getting the better of the teacher.Collins' 6.46 took the win over McEwen's 6.67 runner-up effort. That was followed by a trip to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The car got the award for best appearing. This car was more than just show though, and Tom proved it by qualifying second with a 6.16/217.91 behind Prudhomme's 6.07/240.These two would meet in the final(what else is new).McEwen opened up eliminations with a 6.31/216.86 over Bonin's 6.49/223.A second round 6.25/215.31 dispatched Billy Meyer's ailing ride.John Lombardo's 6.26/233 fell to his 6.17/230.76 in the semifinal.Problem was,Prudhomme had won his semifinal heat with a 6.07/241.Tom needed to pick up a tenth for his final round race. He didn't.The two ran almost exactly the same times they had run in the semifinals, with Don's 6.07/240 getting the win over Tom's 6.17/231.95.By this time, McEwen must have been tired of playing second fiddle to the "Snake".The week following the Springnationals(June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. There was no Prudhomme in site as he was racig elsewhere.Tom's 6.36/219 qualified second for the eight-car field behind Snow's 6.26/216.After that, McEwen was unstoppable. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.73 in the "Blue Max" in the first round with a 6.36/219.Like a bracket racer, he ran another 6.36 in the semifinal to beat Hoover's 6.42. He went up against Johh White in the final, and even though he slowed a bit,to a 6.39/210, he won easily as White had problems and shut down. Both the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" were at Martin, Michigan on June 24 for the NHRA Division Three race.Tom's 6.18/217.91 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.09/237.But the two would never run each other.Tom's easy 6.31 in the first round beat alternate,Paul Radici. In the semifinal, his 6.22/216.86 got back by Tom Anderson's 6.20/215.The "Snake" would go on to win. Best NHRA speed was 236.84 at Ontario. Formerly listed 241.28. We need to confirm if the Goose ran that speed in 1978 and where.

Notes: Began the year with the Monza but later switched to the Corvette. They ran 6.382/222.77 to qualify #12 at NHRA Pomona, CA but hit the guardrail in round one. A 6.668/222.77 was the first alternate at the Gatornationals. The team stepped up to the #5 qualifier at NHRA Columbus with a 6.200/235.60 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.33/229 to 6.43/229.59. Ron also qualified #5 at Englishtown at 6.130/236.84. He beat Kenny Bernstein in round one, 6.23/236.22 to 6.52/205. In round two, Ron laid a massive holeshot on Don Prudhomme and took a 6.33/236.22 to 6.17/241 victory. However, Ed McCulloch got to him in the semis, 6.13/236 to 6.65/230.76. We think the Corvette debuted at Indy. | R/U to the resurgent Blue Max at the '78 SIR 64 FC meet, then the Fallnationals over the War Eagle, who won the rain-delayed SIR opener that April over Ivo. - Joe Moore

Notes: "Jungle Jim" had a pretty good season in '73. His new Vega had been running well. He went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.58/214.79 to qualify #5 in the 32 car field. That was impressive considering there were 75 funny cars at the meet. He didn't just qualify well, he ran well in eliminations as well. An opening round 6.49/225.00 beat Frank Huff's 6.93/212 in the "King Cobra" and in round two his quick-leaving 6.60/211.76 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.59/217. Jim had another close race in round three that saw his 6.57/221.13 beat Mart Higginbotham's 6.62/218. His easiest run on his way to the final came in the semifinals where Jim Paoli smoked the tires against him. Liberman advanced with a 6.61/212.76. He faced Don Schumacher in the final and the "Shoe" had the edge. He had been running quicker and quicker in every round. His semifinal win came with a 6.42. Sure enough, Jim tried to get the power to the ground in the final and smoked the tires while Schumacher ran 6.44/220 or the win. Jim then went to Miami-Hollywood for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show and Jim once again qualified #5, this time with a 6.86. He improved to 6.65/220.58 in the first round, to beat Pee Wee Wallace and in round two he beat Paul Smith in the "Fireball Vega", but Jim wounded his engine on the run and was unable to make it back for the semifinals. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona was a mess. The track was horrible and it was rained out twice. Still, even with the tricky track conditions that kept a lot of strong teams from qualifying, Jim showed that he knew how to "read" the track and managed to qualify #14. Unfortunately, with the rain delay, Jim was unable to stay for eliminations and alternate Tom McEwen took his place in the field. He was back at Miami for its Winter Funny Car Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.86 behind Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." He never ran that slow again during eliminations. He opened with a 6.72/197.80 to beat Al Marshall's 6.91/210 in the "Tyrant." Liberman had to race Marshall again in the semifinals when he got back in on the "break rule" and the results were the same. Jim’s 6.78/207.37 beat Al's 6.82/209. This put Jim in the final against Tharp. It was a close race, but JJ set Low ET and Top Speed in winning with a 6.65/216.80 over Tharp's 6.70/215. He then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 with a 6.74/209.30. He dropped his ET by over two tenths in the first round, when he ran 6.50 to advance over a fouling Paul Radici. He took an easy second round win and then lost to Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega in the semifinals. Jim’s 6.90/212.26 lost to Kelly's motor-blowing 6.88. Brown was unable to return to run in the final so Liberman was reinstated. It was a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, right down to the winner. Schumacher’s 6.55/215 beat JJ's 6.81/216.86 for the victory. In April he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He had a bit of luck in the first round, where his smoky 7.74/130.81 advanced when his competition, Harlan Thompson, had his transmission stick in low gear. After that, Jim ran strong. He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.44/215.31 that beat Al Segrini. In the final, he faced Jake Crimmins driving the "Swensen & Lani" Mustang. Liberman picked up the win with a 6.48/215.31 over Jake's 7.03/167. On April 28, he was at Capitol, where although he failed to reach the final, he was one of four cars that ran 6.5's. The next day he won at Atco. He then won an Funny Car show at Aquasco in early May before going to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field and in the first round, he beat McEwen's 6.94 with a 6.82. A second round 6.70/205 advanced when Jim Nicoll broke and he shot to a 6.64/214.28 in the semifinals to beat Dean LaPole's Chevy powered car at 6.81. This put him into the final against Gene Snow. Gene had trouble and slowed to 14.11 while JJ picked up yet another win with a 6.86/200.44. Another win came in June over a sixteen-car field at Connecticut. There Jim ran his old friend Lew Arrington in the final. Jim was running too strong for Arrington on this day as JJ set Low ET in the final with a 6.59/213.27 that easily covered "Brutus" at 7.00/205. Liberman didn't fare so well at a best of three match race against Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega at Englishtown. In their first race Foster's 6.27/226 beat Jim's 6.55/220.58. In the second race, JJ's throttle linkage broke and he shut down on the line. No ET's were recorded in their third race, but Foster led them through at 227 while Jim crossed the line second at 218.44. It was a minor setback as then Jim went to Cayuga for the Canadian All-Pro Championships where he beat Bobby Rowe in the final with a 6.95/200.89. He lost early on July 4 at an eight-car show at Englishtown where Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" Demon beat him in the first round. He was back at Englishtown a couple of weeks later for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.59, but a first-round 6.84/210 lost to Foster's 6.66/208. In Nov, Jim set Atco record at 6.45.

Notes: Grove showed up at Beeline with his still unfinished Mustang for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.91/202.24 to qualify #29 in the 32 car field, but an opening round 7.05/196.50 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.49/220. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the eleventh alternate. He also could not qualify for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ended up as the first alternate. Jim Adolph qualified, but his car broke, and he was unable to run in eliminations, so Grove got into the field. Mert Littlefield shut down early into his run in the opening round, and Tommy advanced with a 7.69. In round two, his 7.56 lost to Dave Uyehara's 7.18 in Larry Huff's car. On April 28, he was a Capitol for an eight-car show that had all the cars run two rounds of racing, with the two Low ET's cars meeting in the final. Grove's 6.56/216 defeated Clare Sanders' quicker 6.54/189 in the "Ramchargers" car in his first race. In his second race, he faced Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max. Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand, and he backed out of it while Tharp ran 6.62/195 to win. Grove ran really well at the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway in May. It was a sixteen-car show, and Grove made it into the semifinal where Jim Nicoll fouled against him. Unfortunately, Grove hurt some valvetrain parts and repaired them for his final round showdown with Don Prudhomme. Those repairs did not work out as the car failed to fire for the final, and Tom had to watch as the "Snake" made an easy solo for the win. He qualified #12 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he damaged his engine and could not compete in eliminations. Near the end of June, he went to US 13, Delmar, for a best-of-three-match race against Shirley Muldowney. He won all three of their races, running a best of 7.09/202.24. In July, he was in New England for a sixteen-car show. The car got out of shape in the first round, and the rear almost hit the guardrail. After he straightened it out, he took off in hot pursuit of Dale Pulde, who was running 7.03/172 in the other lane. Grove lost with an 8.61/202. He came back out later for a consolation race with Fred Goeske. Fred broke in their race, and Grove ran 6.82/207. Grove was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56 qualified #8. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.79 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.50. Grove ended his '73 season at Beeline for its sixth annual Funny Car Nationals held on December 2. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.78/213.76 qualified #4. He improved to 6.68 as just 192.30 in the opening round to beat Roger Garten's 7.28/156 in the "Warhorse." But an even better 6.65/217.38 fell to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.53/210 in the second round. Several DNQs at NHRA national events with best times of 6.888/211.76 in qualifying #12 at Columbus. We remember the 6.42/227 but need to validate track and year.

Notes: Phillips and Shores spent $35,000 to build this car. It used a 118" Logghe chassis, and the engine was a 426 Hemi built by Ed Pink. It used a half-inch Moldex stroker crank as well as M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons. Crower supplied the cam. The blower drive and manifold were from Cragar, and Marc Danekas prepared the GMC 6/71. The 87% nitro mix was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. A Lenco two-speed transmitted the power back to a Dana rear with 3.90 gears. The Vega body came from J&E Fiberglass. | Early in the season, Paul Smith drove this car before moving into the seat of the "Sir Wells" car. After that, Tom Crevasse jumped behind the wheel. To say that the car ran well was an understatement. He won the Warner Robins National Open in May. Tom had a close first-round race where both he and Frank Oglesby ran 6.81, but the "Fireball Vega" got the win. Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" broke in the semifinals, and Tom ran an easy single. In the final, he faced Smith. Tom was up to the task, running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.61/218.44 while Smith slowed to 8.72/86.77 after losing his blower belt. Things didn't go too well at the NHRA Springnationals. The car went into a ball of flame during qualifying. Tom was OK, but the car was badly damaged. Atlanta held a 14 car show later in the month, and Crevasse was there. He soloed in the first round, when Ed O'Brien had a leak on the line. But shortly after that, it rained, and the race was canceled. On July 29, he was at Tri-City Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division Three race. In the first round, he defeated Steve Tansy with a 6.75/212.76, but his late 6.68/219.51 in the semifinal lost to Dale Emery's 6.74/218. Tom did not race at Indy for the NHRA Nationals; instead, he was at Connecticut for its East Coast Mini-Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he lost to Lew Arrington in the opening round. Shortly after that, Crevasse raced at another eight-car show at Atco. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.56/225.00 that beat a tire-smoking, Pete Hill. In the semifinal, a 6.59/217.91 beat Roy Harris in the "Frantic Ford." He faced Arrington in the final. But there was a major screw-up, as the light went green as soon as Arrington staged. Crevasse had not even had a chance to stage the "Fireball Vega." The two drivers split the purse. Tom won the final NHRA Division One race at Atco on September 15. In the opening round, his 6.65/221.13 beat Dave Condit's 6.98/192 in the "LA Hooker." He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinal, where his 6.48/227.27 beat Arnie Swensen's Mustang. He faced Charlie Therwhanger, who was driving Mike Burkhart's Vega in the final. Tom's 6.59/223 got the win. The following day, he was at New England Dragway for its Funny Car Nationals. This was a 32 car show, and after winning the first-round easily, his 6.54 in round two lost to Pee Wee Wallace's 6.55. Shortly after that, Tom was at Suffolk for the Dixie Classic. In round one, his 6.69/216 defeated Joe Jacono's 6.99/202. In round two, his 6.64/215 lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.55/201.

Notes: Tripp was at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Traction was horrible as Low ET of the meet was 6.21 (and that was a track record). Shumake didn't run quite that well, but in the first round, he advanced with a 6.48/224.42 when John Force fouled. In the semifinals, he ran 6.30, but lost to Don Prudhomme's holeshot aided 6.34. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.058/238.09. A 6.147/243.24 beat Frank Hall in the first round, and in round two, he set Top Speed of the meet on a 6.068/246.57 pass, losing run to Raymond Beadle's 6.02/239 in the "Blue Max." At the Bakersfield March Meet, Tripp qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 6.28. He beat Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang in the first round, while in the semifinals, his 6.24/230.17 beat Tom McEwen's 6.44/223 to advance into the final. There, he lost to Tom Ridings. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals. His best of 6.201/242.58 was good for the third alternate. He also failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals when the car broke. By the time the team rolled into Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals on May 30, the Arrow had become a Dodge Omni. It was an eight-car field and Tripp ran 6.239/236.84 to qualify #7. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round, 6.09/244 to 6.216/235.60. At the next NHRA event, the Springnationals, Shumake qualified on the "bump" with a 6.192/225.56. He lost to Force in the first round, on a holehot, 6.30/235.60 to Tripp's 6.242/235.60. That was Tripp's last national event in this car. He raced a car for Billy Meyer for the last two events of the year. Photo from OCIR 1982.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Hoover entered the '89 season with a new carbon fiber body on his McKinney chassis. He continued to run the AFT clutch that had served him so well in late '88. His 82 year old father, George, continued to serve as crew chief. Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42/268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round, and beat him with a 5.39/260.11 to Force's 5.46/275. In the second round, be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43/264.23 and once again, met Force in the first round. Again, Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round, for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time, he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60/150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45/264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49/244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where a 5.36/264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round, but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round, after qualifying #11 with a 5.57/263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44/252.66, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67/183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55/242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42/275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79/135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54/256.77 qualified #5, and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.57/251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47/270 beat Tom's 5.68/211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5, and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76/248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round, be beat Gary Ritter, but in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47/256.70. But once again, McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66/261.55 and in the first round, he improved to a 5.54/265.48, but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49/261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55/259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In all, he made four qualifying runs; the times were 5.72, 5.69, 5.55, and 5.58. In the first round, he improved to a 5.42/238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80/111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (September 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 5.54/265.01, but in the first round, he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41/253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Roland got the sponsor, but no money ever changed hands. That is why Roland parked the car after this race. The team switched between two beautiful bodies on this car in '93: a purple one and the aqua, blue one pictured here at Columbus 1993. One half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at Houston Slick 50 Nats with John Force, Gordie 5.131, and Force 5.156. This team made its NHRA debut at the Supernationals. Car owner Roland Leong turned the wrenches over to Leonard Hughes, and he hired "240 MPH" Gordie Bonin to drive. Things started slowly when they failed to qualify at Houston, but things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin qualified #9 with a 5.36/286.35. He improved to 5.28/281.86 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Chuck Etchells' 5.21/274. NHRA's next event was the non-points Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.37/276.32 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.42/268.01 advanced when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gordie had a bit more luck when Wyatt Radke broke against him, and his 5.33/237.34 advanced into the final. There he met Al Hofmann, and this time Bonin had problems and slowed to a 10.14/80.97 while Al got the victory with a 5.18/288. The team really picked up the pace at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Gordie's 5.14/286.53 qualified #3. Unfortunately, the throttle linkage broke in the first round, and his 6.58/134.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/195. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. A 5.30/282.22 qualified #5. Bonin picked up to a 5.23/279.76 in the first round to beat Jim Epler, and in round two, his 5.26/285.89 got around Etchells close 5.27/274. In the semifinals, Bonin slowed to 5.53/242.71, which lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.27/284. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, a great 5.08 at 285.80 qualified #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in round one, with a 5.23/277.60, but in the second round, he lost to Hoover. It had been twelve years since Bonin's last NHRA victory, but at the Springnationals, he got another. In qualifying, a 5.23/289.48 (Top Speed) had placed him #4 on the grid. A first-round 5.27/282.39 took out Gary Densham, while in round two, his 5.24/288.73 beat Hofmann's 5.25/281 in a close one. Bonin had to do a bit of driving in the semifinals as his 5.31/284.90 beat Radke's slightly quicker 5.30/278. He beat Mineo in the final with a 5.60/194.34. He almost made it two in a row when he reached the final at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 5.27/282.75. A first-round 5.40/280.46 beat Densham. He lost a blower belt in round two, and the car slowed to 6.48/144.92, but it was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Hoover who registered a 9.80 in losing. Gordie had a close semifinal race with Cruz Pedregon, where his 5.37/271.98 narrowly beat Pedregon's 5.39/268. This set up a final-round meeting with Force. This was Force's race as he qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed, and in the final, his 5.25/283 got the victory over Bonin's troubled, shut off 9.97/82.16. Another final round appearance came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Hughes tuned the car to a 5.45/259.44 in qualifying #4 in the thin air. Bonin made his way to the finals by stopping Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.52/265.33 and a second-round 5.45/273.55 beat Bruce Nilson. Etchells smoked his tires against him in the semifinals, and Bonin's 5.60/240.96 got him into the final. He faced Pedregon, and Gordie's 5.71/253.23 was no match for Cruz at 5.48/263. After all those good runs, Sonoma was a bit of a disappointment. The team qualified #8 for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.35/281.51, but Hofmann beat them in the first round.

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and the car was powered by a 426 Chrysler Hemi on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. - BS (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Notes: Gary went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the show with a 5.55/272.47. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the opening round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.55/221.23 was the second alternate. But he got into the field when #7 qualifier Paul Smith could not race. The first two alternates were not ready, so Densham got in. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Beal. Only sixteen cars showed up to qualify at Gainesville, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Gary ran 5.25/284.36 to take the #14 spot. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 5.21/290.32 lost to Chuck Etchell's 5.18/294. He really stepped up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where his career-best 5.13/293.63 qualified #4. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.20/290.88 but his off-pace 5.38/244.43 in round two lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.12/300. Rick Howard photo from 1996 NHRA US Nats, Indy. Failed to qualify for the main show with a 17th best 5.24/292. Did qualify for Big Bud Shootout and improved to 5.05/301 in round one, but lost to Cruz Pedregon.

Notes: Howell was at Rockingham on April 19 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was the third AHRA Grand American race. He was the low qualifier for AHRA's "seeded" entries with a 7.35. His 7.52 defeated Malcolm Durham in round two, and in the semifinal, his 7.57 stopped Clyde Morgan. In the final, he faced Gene Snow, and Snow had run 7.16 while winning his semifinal race. Jay really needed to pick it up. However, it was not in the cards as Snow got the victory with a 7.14 with an early shut-off speed of 168 while Howell ran 7.45/193.54 for the runner-up honors. Jay drove this car at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.82/170 and in round two a 7.69/185.56 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.84/181. The "Snake" got back in on the "break rule." The two were to race again in the semifinal, but Howell blew his transmission on the burnout. Prudhomme advanced and went on to win the event. Jay was the Shop Foreman at Logghe Stamping Co. AKA Warhorse. Ran 7.15/199.87 in win at AHRA Detroit race.

Notes: Bryan was at Minnesota Dragway on May 31 for an eight-car show. He lost to Tommy Grove's 7.32/196 in the first round, with a 7.60/181.45, but got back into the show on the "break rule." He made it into the final, facing Grove's Mustang again. Once again, the results were the same, but it was a little closer, with his 7.47/196.06 finishing runner-up to Grove's 7.44/193. The following week (June 7), he was at Tri-City for another eight-car show. He pulled a wheelstand in the first round and lost. He ran a strong 7.21/202.70 in his second race to beat Charlie Allen's 7.40/199. Teal didn't have a very good day at the Funny Car Championships at Martin, Michigan. All the cars there made three runs. In his first race, he crossed the centerline and lost to Pat Foster, driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick. He got out of shape in his second race and clicked it early to a 9.94 loss to Grove's 7.35/205. In his third race, he lost to Larry Arnold. In July, Teal was at Suffolk for the Tidewater Funny Car Meet. The car still had handling problems, as in the first round, he crossed the centerline against Phil Castronovo. In his second race, his 7.62/168.85 lost to Lew Arrington's "Brutus" at 7.53/190. He got it squared away enough to run a 7.54/175.78 in his third race to beat Malcolm Durham's 8.03/182. Bryan made it into the final at an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.58/180 in the first round, with a 7.46/182.18, and in the semifinals, Grove got out of shape and had to shut down while Teal ran 7.60/154.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Teal smoked the tires while Minick set Low ET and Top Speed, winning at 7.32/201.46. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All eighteen cars ran the first round as qualifiers, with the lowest eight ETs getting to run in round two. Bryan's 7.32/206.89 qualified, but in round two, his 7.41/180.00 lost to eventual winner Minick's 7.26/199. Late in August, he was at Minnesota Dragways for a four-car show. A first-round 7.58/181.08 lost to Kenny Safford's 7.17/207 in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the second race, Teal soloed with a 7.54/168.22 when Tom Hoover lost his brakes. In his last race, he made his best pass, a 7.38/210.28, but he was slow off the line and lost to John Collins' 7.41/209 (Atlas Oil Tool Special). In early September, Tri-City held an eight-car show that had Teal's 7.47/161.57 lose to Roger Lindamood's 7.26/202 in the first round. He then went to Iowa for the Humboldt County Funny Car Championships. It was a 1,000-foot track. He lost to eventual winner Mike Burkhart in the first round, then returned on the "break rule" only to lose with a 6.29 to Paula Murphy's 6.21. He frequented US 131 at Martin, Michigan, quite a bit as he was back there for another eight-car show. He ran really well, beating Gary Bolger with a 7.42/199.11, and in the second round, his 7.33/199.55 beat Larry Reyes' 7.51/199 in the "Hawaiian." He went up against Leroy Goldstein, driving the "Ramchargers" Challenger in the final. Unfortunately, it wasn't close; Goldstein's 7.04/206 got the money over Teal's 7.51/170.77. Minnesota held a Labor Day Funny Car race, and Bryan was there, but an off-pace 8.63/144 in the opening round lost to Terry Hedrick's 8.34/131 in the "Super Shaker." At Suffolk for the Dixie Drag Classic, he ran a best of 7.38/208.80 but failed to reach the final. He went up against Fred Goeske on September 19 at Maple Grove for a best-of-three-match race. He won the first race with a 7.30/204.30 over Fred's 7.64/196, but in the second race, Goeske won, but he blew the engine, and the car turned into a fireball. Fred ended up with some burns around his neck, and he and the car were done for the day. Teal soloed with a 7.33/205.96 for the match win. The speed was a new track record. Notes: Roy won the NHRA Division 4 race at Southland Dragway on May 24. Opponent Jake Johnston fouled away a 7.57 in the final and Gay's 7.97 got the victory. Only ten funny cars showed up at Dallas for the NHRA World Finals on October 15. Roy qualified #8 with a 7.41. In the opening round, he fouled away a 7.43 against eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.14/185.

Notes: We are not listing seperate times for the three bodies that Jerry ran this year (a Trans Am, a Mustang, and then this Finals-winning Corvette). It was the same car and combo except for the bodies. We are keeping the Trans Am and Mustang entries but blanking the ETs. If we get more info that changes this, we will make adjustments. - BP

Notes: Flip-Up Funny Car. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation. Larry Reyes met Bill Taylor in '66, and Taylor let him drive his new Funny Car. Reyes liked it as the team won some races. He continued to drive for Taylor for the next two years. He drove the "Kingfish" part-time during the '67 season as he held a full-time job at Jones Imports in Memphis. The team went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Larry ran 8.52/172. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car field, and Reyes won his first-round race but could not race in the semifinal when the car lost oil pressure. In mid-April, Reyes beat Bob Sullivan's "Pandamonium" Camaro in a best of three match race at Alton Dragway. On April 16, the "Kingfish" was at Memphis for a best of three against Bobby Woods Chevelle. In their first race, the Chevelle got out of shape and was all over the track, so Woods shut down, and Reyes ran 9.12 to win. They both left the line together in the second race before both lost traction. Reyes recovered first, and he ran 9.27/151.60 for the win. Woods had blown both head gaskets, so Joe Lunati filled in with his Camaro for the last race. It made no difference to Reyes as he reset both ends of the track record with an 8.41/172.50. Reyes was also driving at Cecil County for the three-day Super Stock Nationals. He was in the "unlimited" class for blown cars only. On Friday, he shut off to 8.64/156.25 in a loss to Roger Wolford's 8.46/166 in the opening round. On Saturday, the "Kingfish" beat Al Vanderwoulde in the opening round, but a blown rear end prevented further competition. The car was repaired for Sunday, and this time Larry's 8.19/179.56 lost to Jack Chrisman's 8.07/184 in the first round. A Super eliminator was also run on Sunday to have sixteen fuel-burning cars and sixteen gas-burning cars run separately until there was one left of each to run against each other for the title. A handicap was given based on the times run by the cars over the weekend. Reyes continued to have problems in the first round, and this time his 8.18/174.41 could not overcome Tom Grove's .5 second handicap. Grove's unblown Mustang beat him with an 8.36/166. Reyes ran 7.97/189.08 at the OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67.

Notes: Tom was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.53 and had an easy first-round win. In the second round, both he and opponent Gene Snow had difficulties getting traction, and Hoover's 6.92 got the win over Snow's 7.13. In the semifinals, Hoover's "Showtime" once again smoked the times, and this time, his 7.52 lost to eventual winner Mike Van Sant's 6.82 in the "Invader." Tom did not race at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified #9 with a 6.300/211.26. But again, he went up in smoke, and his opening round 8.187/104.04 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.062/219.51. Tom then went to Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.444/214.79 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 6.47/209.30 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.57/207.37. He lost to Bob Pickett's 6.65/221.13 in round two with a 6.74/220.04. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Later in April, Hoover was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. He reached the final at that event by stopping Wilfred Boutilier in the first round with a 6.41. A 6.39 in round two took out Dick Custy, and a 6.35 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced Snow in the final. Snow had been running just a little quicker throughout eliminations with a 6.26 best, but the race never came off as Hoover lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Gene a solo for the victory. In May, he was in Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.81 and lasted until round two, where Dale Emery's 6.65/208 beat his 6.71/217.88. Later in the month, he was runner-up to Snow again at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. He grabbed a victory at St. Louis on June 6 for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his opening round 6.65/217.40 advanced over Jerry Messer's broken Mustang II at 14.24. In the semifinals, his 6.73/210.86 beat Emery, who smoked the tires. For the third time that season, Hoover would face Snow in the final. Once again, Gene had been running quicker during eliminations with a 6.56 best. But this time, Snow overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover ran his best, a 6.53/209.86, to pick up the win. The following week (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.635/207.85. He lost a close race against Gary Burgin in the first round, with his 6.604/218.97 falling to Burgin's 6.591/214.79. He was still driving the Vega in July at the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. He was quick off the line in his first-round race with Custy as Tom's 6.24 beat Dick's slightly quicker 6.23. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.19 lost to Tom Prock's 6.09. Tom's 5.999/232.55 times were among several questionable numbers recorded at Green Valley Race City events. Tom came out with a new Monza at Martin, Michigan, in mid-August for the PHR Championships and raced it throughout the end of the season. | Former Don Prudhomme Vega that Tom Hoover ran from Spring 1974 through mid-Summer 1976 with three different paint schemes.
