Notes: The car that broke the Corvette curse. Also 6.14/233.76 at 77 US Nats. Won IHRA Winternationals 1977. Ran 6.11 at Milan, 6.37 at Gainesville, 6.18 at Columbus, 6.14 at Englishtown, and 6.14 at Indy. | Tom debuted his Corvette at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The car failed to qualify, but it was awarded "Best Appearing Professional Car." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #6, but broke on the line in round two, advancing Roger Lindamood. Things went a little better for the "Goose" the following week (March 20) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and the field was "weak,", but Tom's Corvette ran well. He qualified #2 with a 6.79/216 behind Shirl Greer, but he soloed with a 9.47 when Wilfred Boutilier was shut off on the line with an oil leak. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.62/216.86 that beat Pete Miner's 7.48 in his Duster. In the final, he ran Greer. Shirl had problems and slowed while McEwen ran a 6.65/216.86 for the victory. A week later (March 27), he was in another final. This time it was at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. He lost in the final, but it wasn't too bad as how many cars were outrunning Don Prudhomme at the time? His 6.33/229.59 lost to the "Snake's" 6.20/240. On May 1, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to Dick Bourgeois driving the Creasy Brothers car in the first round. He was runner-up to Dale Pulde at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 21. On the Memorial Day weekend of May 29 and 30, Tom was at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. All cars ran the first-round with the four lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. McEwen's 6.28 made the semis where he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" with a 6.16/227.27. In the final, he faced Tommy Ivo and McEwen got the victory with a 6.26/190.67. The next day, they did it again and once again Tom qualified for the semifinals, this time with a 6.36. He met Prudhomme in his semifinal race and lost to Don's 6.15/205. The following weekend (June 5), he was at Amarillo for the IHRA World Nationals. He beat Shirl Greer before losing to Ray Sherman in the semifinals. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.18 qualified #5. Tom failed to reach the finals. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove of July 4. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET), and advanced past the first-round with a 6.55/171.75 when Ken Safford fouled in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the semifinals, he beat Tom Prock's 6.52/206 with a 6.34/214.28. In the all Corvette final, Tom ran Jerry Boldenow's "Moby Dick." McEwen's 6.28/218.97 came out on top over Jerry's 6.47/225. That was Tom's first win ever in IHRA competition. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, qualifying #2 to Prudhomme with a 6.14/233.16. His only other pass in qualifying was a 6.23. He beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a tire smoking 7.13, but he lost to Sherman in round two when he smoked the tires again to a 7.45. McEwen ran at York US 30 on July 16 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified #1 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.13. In the first round, a 6.24 beat Boldenow's 6.38. In the semifinals, Tom stepped up to a strong 6.11 and still lost to Gary Burgin's 6.13. On July 31, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.31/224 qualified #2 behind Tom Hoover. In the first round his 6.31/214.79 beat Gene Snow's 6.68/185. Unfortunately, McEwen broke and was unable to run in the semifinals, so Snow got reinstated. He competed at Atco for its Fuel Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs with the two lowest ETs coming back for the final. Tom lost his first race to Les Cassidy's 6.63 with an off pace 8.93. He won his second race with a 6.68/174 over Arnie Swensen's 6.78/193. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. On August 21, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #2 with a 6.29, but in round one, his fuel pump broke and opponent Bill Leavitt advanced. At the US Nationals at Indy, McEwen qualified #6 with a 6.14/230.17. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.45/200 in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 6.20/228. In the second round, his 6.24/233.76 lost to Burgin's 6.08/236. He went to Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals on September 18. A 6.48 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he slipped to a 6.60 that lost to Tom Prock's 6.44. He did not go to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. |

Notes: This team was tough and was able to surprise with a big number from time to time. Pott failed to qualify the "Mr. Norm" car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.411 (speed unknown) was the second alternate. In June, Pott was in Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. He had problems in the first round, but his 8.28 advanced as opponent Al Bergler shut off on the line. In the semifinals, his 6.64/209.78 beat Tom Prock's 6.70/200 in the "Detroit Tiger." He faced Tom McEwen in the final, and the "Goose" blew his engine while Pott picked up the victory with a 6.66. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, his 6.29 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He beat low qualifier Billy Meyer in the first round with a 6.27, but in the semifinals, his 6.95 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.57. The team qualified for the PHR Championships, which was pretty good considering that Bernstein, Dale Pulde, Tripp Shumake, Ron Colson, and others failed to make the show. Unfortunately, John lost early. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Pott ran 6.19 early in qualifying, but, figuring that wasn't enough, he came back out and ran 6.139/231.36. That still wasn't enough, as he ended up as the first alternate for the field. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Where did they run 236.22? | This car changed hands many times, eventually landing in Jim Wemett's garage. - Tim Simplot |

Notes: Hoover's first funny car. Woody Gilmore chassis, Fiberglass Trends Challenger body. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. | After running a SOHC Ford-powered Top Fuel dragster for the last couple of seasons, Tom switched to FC's for '70. It was definitely a learning experience. His first time out with the car came at Irwindale shortly before the NHRA Winternationals. The first time they lowered the body, he was claustrophobic; he "got over that weird feeling after a few runs." He failed to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals but had transmission trouble in the first round and lost to Frank Federici in the "Shark." Tom had one of only two FCs that showed up at NHRA's third Division 5 race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD. Unfortunately, in their run for the money, his 8.13/187.50 lost to Art Ward's 8.05/175. He competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where all cars were to run three rounds. He fouled (8.16) in his first race, but a 7.47 in his second race beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car. He also won his third race with a strong 7.28/206.42. He had a bad day in August at Minnesota Dragways. It was a four-car race, and he soloed in his first race with a 7.55/197.36 when John Collins, who was now driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car lost fire. Hoover was to race Bryan Teal in the "Super Chief" in his second race, but while backing up from his burnout, Tom's brakes failed. He tried to stop the car by swerving it into the sand that ran alongside the track. Everyone got out of the way except for one boy who escaped with just some bruises. He repaired the brakes in time to make a final run against Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. Safford lost a rod on their run, and Tom's 7.34/200.89 got the win. His next stop was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. An opening round 7.99/164.23 got past Bob Sullivan's ailing Camaro, and in round two, his 7.67/187.10 beat Dick Harrell's 7.94/184. In the semifinals, Don Prudhomme's 7.18/204 sent Hoover's 7.56/198.96 packing. Hoover ran a career-best since joining the Funny Car ranks of 7.048/209 in qualifying #7 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A first-round 7.209/204.54 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.22/206 in the "Super Duster." A National Dragster article stated that he had run a best of 6.90 this season. Tom's known best IHRA ET was a 7.04 at Rockingham. |

Notes: Warren was at Irwindale on January 1 for its New Year's Day race. He failed to qualify but got into the show when Fred Goeske's Road Runner broke. Unfortunately, the car developed problems in the first round, and opponent Gordon Mineo soloed into the second round. On March 28, Warren was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.01/177.86 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 7.74/157. Gunter was back at OCIR on May 2 for its Big Four Championships. It was not a good outing. Warren stuffed it into the guardrail just past the finish line during qualifying. He was ok, not so much the car. | Very early picture of the first chassis under the original body. C&O TorqueFlite and Chrysler rear end. It was a real handful and ended up along the fence at OCIR, and new chassis was built. The original car weighed less than 1800 lbs. Even with the new lower and stronger chassis, the car still wanted to make a quick "jog" at about half-track. Every run was a surprise. I spent two years on tour back east and will never forget the good times. - Warren Gunter |

Notes: Larry qualified this car #10 at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 7.12. Unfortunately, a 7.18/209 in the first round, lost to Leroy Goldstein's 6.85/210 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. | Larry's best NHRA time was 7.136, but need to confirm which car that was. |

Notes: Lew got a new car after running the same Firebird in '68, '69, and '70. He also changed engines from the early 392 Hemi to the newer 426 style Hemi. He must have taken a liking to the new Mustang as not only did the sleek body cloak his chassis, but he also went through the added effort of welding up a pair of valve covers to look like he was running a Boss 429 Ford engine. In April, Lew faced Jim Liberman in a best-of-three match race at Connecticut. Liberman won the first race with a 7.19/197 over Lew's 7.32/195.65. In the second race, Liberman went into a wheelstand and shut off, giving "Brutus" the win at 7.17/196.50. Jim could not run in the final race due to a blown transmission, so Arrington soloed for the match race win. He set a 7.02 track record at 203.61 on the final pass. Lew was at the Super Stock Nationals on May 9 at York US 30, but a first-round 7.35/208.33 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.88/199. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet. Also, 6.77 at New England Dragway on October 11, 1971. He crossed the country to race at Fremont in late October 1971 (6.75). Lew's best 1971 times are courtesy of Dennis Doubleday. |

Notes: Anderson was the full-time driver for Jim Wemett in 1982. He moonlighted as the interim Custom Body driver in midseason after Bobby Hilton's departure and before Paul Smith's tenure in the car. Anderson qualified the Custom Body #3 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 5.935 at 245.90 mph and defeated Ken Veney in round one, with a 6.341 to Veney's 6.362. He lost to Gary Burgin in round 2. - David Hapgood | Tom was also driving this car in August when he won the Englishtown Race of Champions event. A quick leaving 6.03 in the final beat Burgin's 5.97. Notes: Photo from Popular Hot Rodding Championships, Martin, MI, 1982. | This team picked up the pace in 1982. John drove Larry Coogle's "Sting" at both NHRA and IHRA events during the year and did quite well. The team missed the season opening NHRA Winternationals, but in March they showed up at Gainesville and qualified #3 with a 6.01/234.37. John beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.17/229.00. In the second round, he fell off to a 6.95/181.45 that lost to Tim Grose's 6.31/234. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he made it into the final before losing to Dale Pulde's 6.26/238 with an off pace 7.92/134. Atlanta held an eight-car show in early April and Pott was there. Unfortunately, he lost to Kosty Ivanof in the first round. John was back at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show and his 6.27/231.36 failed to make the field (fifth alternate). On May 2, at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, John made it into the final at the second IHRA race in a row. The "Sting" set Top Speed at 245.90 and beat low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the first round, when the "Blue Max" driver got out of shape. In the semifinals, he got around a tire shaking Billy Meyer, putting him in the final against Kenny Bernstein. Pott got his second runner-up finish when Bernstein beat him with a 6.21. He was pretty disappointed when he failed to qualify at the next IHRA race, the Springnationals at Bristol. NHRA held its Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge at the end of May and it was a tough field to crack as there were only eight spots available. John qualified #5 with a 6.14 which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. It wasn't much of a race as John lost a rod shortly after leaving the line, and fell to Don's 6.10/242. At Columbus, the team's best of 6.34/226.13 was good for the fourth alternate spot at the NHRA Springnationals. Things went better the following week (June 20) at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 5.98 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he lost to Beadle who set a 5.88 track record in beating him in the first round. During the early part of the season, the team was still running the Firebird body. Not sure when they changed over to the Omni body, but at Maple Grove on June 27 they were running the Omni at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Once again, John made it into the final and once again he was denied the win. This time Pulde got him with a 6.33 as John got crossed up and shut off to 10.65. In July, Pott was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Beadle’s 6.02/246 stopped his 6.22/220.58 from advancing. |

Notes: 1968 Charger designed by Gary Dyer with a dragster-type roll cage, built by Race Car Specialties. Campaigned during '68 season and burned to the ground in late '68 at US 30 (Gary, Ind.) due to oil filter coming off the engine, catching fire, and injuring Gary Dyer. Ran 7.47/196 on that pass. Also ran 7.46/195.87 at NY National 68. | Norm Kraus and driver Gary Dyer were a tough act to beat in the early years of Funny Car racing. The '65, '66, and '67 seasons saw the team beat every superstar at one time or another. Then came '68. It was not a good year for the "Mr. Norm" team. It started well enough with Dyer driving the new Charger into the high sevens with ease. It looked like the start of another successful season. Then came the trouble. While racing in Texas, the motor blew and Gary got the car stopped and got out OK, but then for no known reason, the car caught fire. It burned to the ground as once the magnesium caught fire, there was no putting it out. All that was left was the bare chassis. So, while Dyer set about rebuilding the car, they hired a local driver to drive the '67 mount. That didn't go so well when the driver lost control of the car at Cordova and smacked it into a telephone pole. The driver was seriously injured and the car was totaled. After this, the team was out of racing for a short while as they had no car. Then came the oil filter incident at Gary US 30 mentioned above. |

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94/249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89/244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round, he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87/243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first-round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02/248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98/246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93/245 beat Ron Correnti, putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93/248.48 for the victory. Things reverted back to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen-car show with a 5.98, but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95/234.13, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83/251.53 and lost early. Jim went on to win NHRA Brainerd. His best NHRA times were 5.718/254.66 at the Keystone Nationals. Did Jim run 261 on the IHRA tour this year or was that from another year? |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Jim was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His best of 6.42 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. He also failed to make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where his 5.87/245.96 best was good for the fourth alternate. He was back at Firebird Raceway on April 11 where ten FCs each made two runs and the two lowest ETs met in the final. Jim's first race had his 6.22/231.95 beat Johnny West's 6.23/186 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race, his 6.33/176.81 lost to Gary Densham's 6.13/234. His ETs were not good enough to get into the final. Later that month, he was at Sacramento for similarly run show. Dunn won his first race over a broken Wally Giavia with a 6.08/245.91. In his second race, he ran 5.96/247.84 to beat Jim Murphy's 6.06/228. Unfortunately, once again, his times were not good enough to make the final. Dunn failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals where his 5.92/253.09 was the fifth alternate. Going into the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona, Jim's best ET had been 5.74. But before the race, a new lock-up clutch was installed as well as dual magnetos and fuel pumps. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 5.71/253.59. The next run was 5.67/258.54 and a final 5.60/267.45 qualified #13. He upset a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein in the opening round with yet another career-best of 5.55 at 266.98, but he lost to Mark Oswald in round two. |

Notes: Beat four "high dollar" cars, messed up the points chase, and won the NHRA World Finals - all in one day. Photo from Indy 1984. | Sherm did not qualify at the NHRA Winters (times not reported). He qualified #14 at Atlanta with a 6.021/241.28 but shut off and lost to Dale Pulde's 5.90 in round one. He next ran at the NHRA Cajun Nationals and qualified #10 at 6.049/240.64. Pulde got him again in round one, but it was closer, 5.92 to 6.27/205. Sherm found the fives at the Springnationals, running 5.989/236.22 to qualify #12. He surprised Kenny Bernstein in round one, 6.14/226, to a 12-second shutoff. Raymond Beadle ended Sherm's day in round two, 5.93 to 6.28/191. Sherm qualified #13 at Brainerd at 6.017/239.36. Mark Oswald got around him in round one, but Sherm was competitive, 5.83/226 to 6.012/241.93. Sherm qualified #15 at Indy with a nice 5.931/250.00, but Bernstein got revenge in round one, 5.91, to Sherm's 10-second shutoff. Sherm's next race was the season-ending NHRA World Finals at Pomona. It was his finest hour. Sherm qualified #11 at 5.898/250.69. He started his day of giant-killing with a first-round 5.959/239.36 to 5.898/249.30 holeshot to defeat Kenny Bernstein by .005 seconds. Round two placed Sherm against legend Don Prudhomme, but Sherm bit the Snake with a consistent 5.980/224.43 as Prudhomme shut off at 11 seconds. Sherm was up against Billy Meyer in the semi-finals. This time, he had to drive around a holeshot as Meyer got out first. But Sherm stayed consistent to win at 5.915/243.90 to Meyer's close 5.991/221.67. In the final, Gunn lined up against yet another monster, Mark Oswald, in the mighty Candies and Hughes Firebird, which had leveraged 5.70s all day. But this was Sherm Gunn's day in the sun, as he ran an even quicker 5.877/248.61 as the C&H car lost a motor and faded to an 11-second shutoff. | Sherm Gunn/Mark Dentler Funny Car took the win. Dentler was the CC of Mike Miller's Mustang II in the late 70s. The 5.89 in late Saturday qualifying beat McEwen's 5.97 to the finish line. ND after-report said Tom Prock was trying different gear ratios in the 'Goose's Coors Corvette. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Paul started the year in the Jerome Bradford Corvette, which was destroyed in Gainesville. Smith was driving the "Custom Body" Daytona at Rockingham on May 6 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.21/233 qualified #10, and although he improved to 6.00/223 in the opening round, he lost to Mark Oswald's 5.92/233 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In early June, he was still driving this car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #14 with a 5.96/243. But in the opening round, he fouled against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Shortly after that, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where his 6.13 qualified #8. Unfortunately, he lost early. It gets confusing at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals as the car was now a Camaro, and "Custom Body" was still listed in the entry sheet. Nevertheless, his 5.98/238.09 qualified #13, and a 6.12/215.31 fell in the first round to Don Prudhomme's 5.87/246. Was the Camaro a typo? Because at Englishtown, the "Custom Body car was definitely a Daytona as pictures from the event show. He ran 5.887 to qualify #13 for the NHRA Summernationals. Smith lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. Paul did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He definitely was in the Daytona by Brainerd (and PHR Martin, as evidenced in the photo). He qualified #14 at Brainerd at 6.038/243.24 but fell off to a 6.77/130 that lost to Frank Hawley in round one. AKA Utica Flash. Danny saw Smith run. Formerly listed 5.91/252.10, but we need to validate the car in which Paul ran those times. |

He qualified #13 at Englishtown as well at 5.887/250.69 with a first-round loss to Kenny Bernstein, 5.84/238 to 5.985/247.93. His last NHRA national event of the year was Brainerd in August, but he was driving the Custom Body car there. The question is: whose car was Paul driving at Columbus and Englishtown? We are listing those times with this car until we can confirm. |

Notes: Won NHRA Winternats in 1992 (fifth race on nitro). Photo from 1992 Winternationals. Jim drove Jim West's car and his own in 1992. We need to confirm which car ran which event. Check DragStats for best times after this is determined. | Jim qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.23/275.73. He went on to win the event by running steady 5.2's and then taking on John Force in the final. His final round 5.26/273.80, beat Force's 5.32/275. At NHRA's second race of the season, the Arizona Nationals, Jim qualified #2 with a 5.28/271.90. A first-round 5.32/268.41 beat Gary Clapshaw, but he slowed to a 5.40/268.17 in round two that lost to Gary Densham's holeshot aided 5.43/267. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. Jim again qualified well, ripping off a 5.22/272.72 for the #2 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Jerry Caminito in the first round. Jim made it into another final round at the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.25/275.81, and in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.02/167.09 but still won when Caminito smoked his tires even worse to a 6.69/140. In round two, he improved to a 5.20/279.85 to beat Paul Smith. In the semifinals, another consistent 5.22/270.51 beat Gary Bolger's 5.27/273 to advance into the final. Once again, he faced Force in the final, but their roles were reversed from the Winternationals. Here John set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.15/289 in the final to stop Jim's 5.27/275.39. These runs were all made with Epler's own car. Set Top Speed at Denver at 273.72. |

Notes: Undefeated at SIR until McCulloch beat them on 8/05/72. Despite the loss, set 6.49/224 track records at SIR Seafair Funny Car Nats (14,000 fans watched.) Won the 1972 OCIR PDA Championships, beating Gary Burgin in the final. Also #1 qualifier, Low ET and Top Speed (6.551/223.32) at Tulsa PRA race. Ran 6.49 at Seattle on August 15/1972. Featured in the 2/73 issue of Hi-Performance Cars. - RT | Art Whipple teamed up with Ed Wills for the '72 season. Wills was still the owner of the car, but Art came on board with his mechanical skills. The 118" Don Long car cost Ed $25,000 to build. It used a 1,700 hp Keith Black Hemi. The crank rods, and pistons all came from KB's shop. Engle supplied the cam. The blower was the work of Marc Danekas and an Enderle injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed with a Crowerglide flywheel and clutch was used. Wills built the Satellite body and Kenny Youngblood painted the realistic-looking grill. The lettering was done by Neil Aveill while the candy red and gold paint was sprayed on by Ron Schramek. The car weighed 1,800 lbs. and according to the January '73 Drag Racing USA issue, it had run a best of 6.40/225 up until that time (the magazine had three month lead time). Confirmed 6.48 at Lions. Notes: Qualified number 3 at Indy '72 with a 6.529 and finished runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Ran 6.769 at NHRA Amarillo 72. | Bonin debuted the "Pacemaker" Vega in April at the Seattle season opener. He qualified for the eight-car field and, in round one, beat Rich Rogers. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinal. He did better at the Northwest National Open, also held in Seattle. It was another eight-car show, and Bonin ran 6.92/185.56 to advance over a broken Kenny Martin in the opening round. In the semifinals, his 6.89/207.36 beat Twig Zeigler's quicker 6.85/213. This put him into the final against Kenney Goodell. Gordie tried hard, but his 6.91/206.42 finished runner-up to Goodell's 6.68/207. Gordie qualified #9 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown but between 6.63 and 6.68). He lost a 7.10 to 7.10 decision to first alternate Omer Carruthers in round one. |

Notes: McEwen showed up at OCIR on March 20 with his new Duster. The paint differed from the '75 cars. He was at OCIR for its Fox Hunt race and was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He made the show, qualifying #13, but he lost to Chris Lane in the opening round. Shortly after, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven opener. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 6.53/217.91 qualified #9. An off-pace 7.48 in the first round lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.14. In April, he was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He lasted until the semi-finals before losing to Tom Hoover. Near the middle of the month, Irwindale held the Coca-Cola FC Championships. This was a big 32-car show that had all cars run two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Tom's 6.61/177.51 in his first race beat Bill Bailey, but he shut down to an 8.86 loss to Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in his second race. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. Early in May, he was back at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.40/223 qualified #3.McEwen beat Lane in round one, but in the semi-final, his 6.50/206 fell to Jake Johnston's 6.42/223. He competed at the AHRA Okie Nationals held in Tulsa. He qualified with a 6.78, and after an easy first-round win, he ran 6.95/219.30 over Johnny White's late 6.80/206 in round two. A tire-smoking 7.78/116.12 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Dale Emery's 6.58/211. Tom did not set the world on fire on the NHRA national event tour, although he was runner-up at Columbus and Englishtown. He ran best times in the 6.30s, hitting 230.17 at the Winters and 230.76 at the World Finals. We need to confirm where he ran 6.13/231.95. We need to verify if the photo is from 1975 or 1976. |
