Notes: First funny car over 300 MPH and ninth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club (including Top Fuel) on October 3/1993, with a 300.40 at Topeka, Ka Epler started the season driving this Daytona at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.19/288.46. Unfortunately, in round one, he had a rear slick blow out and damage the car. He crossed the finish with a 5.80/178.25, but lost to Jack Wyatt's 5.52/249. He had the car fixed and was at the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona. A 5.24/282.48 qualified #6 and once again he met Wyatt in the first round. This time he had no problems and his 5.41/261.02 beat Wyatt's 5.48/246. Jim took it easy in round two when Gordon Mineo broke and in the semifinals, he advanced with a 25.90-40.76 when his opposition, Al Hofmann, was unable to show after destroying his car while winning his second-round race. This moved Jim into the final against Cruz Pedregon. He was faced with a lot of boos and jeers since he had not made any hard runs in the last two rounds and the crowd was against him for it. In his defense, he was running wounded and was just trying to keep the engine together and through luck, made his way into the final. He lost to Pedregon in the final, but it was not one of his better days as the crowd really got to him. Nothing was said, but his wife wrote a letter to National Dragster explaining their side of the story. Things returned to normal at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. Epler qualified #3 with a career-best (to this point) 5.12/281.77. He smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to an 8.55/91.95 that lost to Brent Fanning's 5.82/231. The team didn't run very well at the NHRA Gatornationals, qualifying on the "bump" with a 5.50/221.13 and losing to low qualifier Hofmann in round one. Things were even worse at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show and Jim ended up as the third alternate with a 5.61/254.59 best. Epler had no problems qualifying at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.28/266.11 placed him #9 in the field. Eliminations were a different story as he lost to Whit Bazemore in round one. The sixth race of the season was the NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. A 5.56/275.31 qualified #12. The Daytona broke in the first round, against Gordie Bonin. More problems kept him out of the show at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals. The best he could run in qualifying was a 9.09/95.90. At the NHRA Springnationals, he was driving the Cutlass bodied car.

Notes: The first Fever Vette, which was red, crashed at US 30. It was the first time we had run it with a new high-compression stroker motor I had been working on. The run previous someone oiled down the track, and, as was the custom at 30, they just sprinkled some rice hulls on the oil, waved some brooms at it, and told us to fire up. I objected, but they said we had to either run or pull the car off the starting line. So we did. When Ed crossed the rice hulls, the car got loose, he got in the dirt, the left-front spindle and kingpin assembly broke off the axle, the car dug in, and went end over end. The best pass for Fever in '74 was 6.61/227 at US 30. - Paul Stenquist

Notes: First year for Castrol, and first year for NHRA National event wins. Photo from Columbus 1987. Also ran 5.453 at same Ennis race. | John started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing race at Firebird Raceway on January 18. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.79, a tenth behind Kenny Bernstein. In the first round his 5.87/244.56 beat Gary Densham, who went into tire shake and shut off. In the semifinals, he improved to 5.73/247.93 to beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen. This put him into the final against Bernstein. Kenny had run 5.72 in his semifinal race and had lane choice. The two had a good race, but Force ran his best of the meet, a 5.70/252.80 to win, while Bernstein made his worse run, a 5.78/243. Things did not go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. John blew up two superchargers in qualifying, finally getting a 5.67/260.94 run in for the #9 spot in the field. He faced low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, and lost when his third supercharger exploded. Things looked to be going in the same direction at the NHRA Gatornationals when once again a blower exploded in qualifying, but crew chief Austin Coil got it figured out and John qualified #6 with a 5.66/254.59. A first-round 5.62/261.24 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two, his 5.69/257.58 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.58/265.

Notes: Gave the car away at Ontario 78. | Dave qualified #7 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.00/205 beat Ezra Boggs in the first round, but in the second round, his 7.08/211 lost to John Collins' 6.90/216. Times were a little more normal at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.367/226.70 qualified #10 on 2/04/78. Dave's 6.47/216 in the first round, lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.38/220. His next stop was at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was a sixteen car field and his 6.35/231.36 qualified #4. He was upset in the first round where his off-pace 7.05/228.42 lost to Gene Modlin's 7.09/195. He also lost early at the Bakersfield March Meet where his tire-smoking 6.55/217.91 lost to John Force's 6.39/212 in round one.Dave was at Fremont on April 2 for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.34/223.32, and another 6.34/223.32 beat Pat Foster in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, the "Super Shops" car broke against the eventual winner John Lombardo. Shortly after(May 13), he was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.19/229.00 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.05/235.60 in the opening round to beat Foster. But a semifinal 6.35/230.17 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.00/242. Notes: Ed McCulloch was especially strong in '75. He had really shown his hand in '72 as the dominant FC of the season, but the '73 and '74 seasons were nowhere near as good. He started the '75 season at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car meet. He and Raymond Beadle had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Ed's 7.21 advancing over the "Blue Max's" 7.44. Unfortunately for McCulloch, he broke on the line against Jim Dunn in the second round. McCulloch was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, and although he qualified, he blew the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.44, but in the first round, his 6.72/197.36 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.61/206. The next stop came at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a twelve-car field, and McCulloch's 6.31/210.77 qualified #3. He got some payback over McEwen in the opening round, where his 6.40/219.51 beat the "Goose's" 6.86/164, but in the second round, the car broke on the line against John Lombardo. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals but then came back stronger than ever. At Irwindale's big Coca-Cola 32 car show, Ed was running well. A 6.62 in the first round advanced easily, and in round two, his 6.47/223.88 beat Clarence Bailey. He improved in round three, where his 6.33/217.91 beat Gary Southern driving the "Voodoo" Pinto. But due to it getting late, track management decided that whoever ran the best ET in winning their semifinal race was declared the winner. The trouble was, as well as Ed had been running, one car had been running a bit stronger - the Monza of Don Prudhomme. So, while Ed won his semifinal race with a 6.44/225.00 (Top Speed), Prudhomme was declared the winner with his track-record 6.25, beating Gary Burgin. Things got better fast; McCulloch then went to Seattle for its opening show of '75 and won. Not only did he win, but he also reset the track record twice, first with a 6.27 (at 218.97) and then again in the final with a 6.24/226.13 (Top Speed) in the final over Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." He then made a stop at Portland, where he won again. Ed had held the track record at 6.37 before the race, but once again, he reset it a couple of times. Not many cars could run three 6.2s in a row at this time, but Ed did it here. A first-round 6.25 (at 218.97) beat Ken McLean, and in round two, he really wowed them with a 6.22 at 217.91 to beat Jerry Ruth. For the second straight race, he faced Miller in the final, and the results were the same: Ed's 6.27/218.97 beat Miller who smoked the tires. Another win came at the Ignitor Funny Car Championships at Firebird Raceway. There he set low et at 6.77 and beat McEwen and Prudhomme on his way to a final round showdown with Ruth. It was a close final with both running 6.82 (Ed at 211.68), but Ed got the win light. On April 27, he scored yet another big victory, winning the Oregon National Open at Portland. He had Low ET at 6.28 in qualifying #1, and he stopped Prudhomme in the final. The month of May started with McCulloch in the victory circle at Fremont's Northern Nationals. There he stopped Jake Johnston and Neil Leffler (on a holeshot) before beating Dunn in the final with a 6.27/224.43. He was back in Seattle on May 31 for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. A 6.52/211.76 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.76/191 stopped Nick Harmon, while a strong 6.39/205.01 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.61/226 in the semifinals. The 6.39 came at a price as he broke the rear end and could not race Prudhomme in the final. He had more problems at Portland for the Rose Festival Drags, where he again broke in the final against Kenny Goodell. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, Prudhomme out qualified him (6.29), but Ed's 6.41/223.88 got the #2 spot. In the first round, McEwen smoked the tires against him, and Ed's 6.45 moved on. In round two, he ran another 6.45 at 205.47 to beat Burgin's 6.58/221. His ride ended in the semifinals, where Beadle's 6.44/223 beat his 6.51/202. The following week, he was at Byron for its Manufacturer's Meet. All twelve cars made two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Gene Snow returned to driving for the first time since his back surgery and made his return a winning one by stopping McCulloch's 6.95/181.81 in the first round with a 6.84/214. Ed won his second race with a 6.90/183.67 over Pat Foster driving the "Chicago Patrol," but his ETs failed to get him into the final. It was then on to Connecticut, where Ed set Low ET at 6.42 before breaking in the final against Bill Leavitt. He was in another final round, this time at Maple Grove's Fourth of July race. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires against Jim Liberman. | Ed turned a 6.25/225.00 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT

Notes: Dennis Fowler was one of the first to run the new Monza bodies in Funny Car competition. Driver Russell Long had it out in January at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where the team failed to qualify. They also failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, running best times of 6.58/199.11. The car took some time to sort out, but it ran well at an eight-car show at Irwindale in March. Long drove it to a 6.59/220.04 to beat Gordie Bonin in the first round, and he soloed in round two with a 6.52/219.51. This race had all cars run two rounds, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. As good as his runs were, they were not good enough to make the runoff. Sundance was one of the cars chosen to run on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour. At the Englishtown Cavalcade race, Long’s 7.23/179.28 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 6.97/211 in the first round. In July, Atco held a Cavalcade race, and Russell's troubled 9.17 lost to Bourgeois' 7.20/221 in the opening round. Portland held its big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, and all the members of the Coke Cavalcade drivers raced there. The format was three rounds, and then the two lowest ET cars met in the final. Russell ran 6.52/217.39 in his first race to beat Richard Rogers' 6.98/203, but after that, the car broke, and he could not make any more runs. He followed the Northwest swing to Edmonton, Alberta, for the Funny Car Spectacular event. In the first round of racing, his 6.95/182 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.56/200 in the "Blue Max." A 6.96/142 got him a win in round two when Roger Lindamood shut off early, and in the last round, he ran an easy solo when Al Bergler's Mustang II broke. The following week found the "Sundance" team at Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was another 32-car show with the two Low ET cars going to the final. In Russell's first race, the car got completely sideways, and he shut off to a 10.86 loss against Fred Goeske's 7.03. An off-pace 7.39 lost to Mike Miller's 6.48 in the "Green Elephant" in his second race, and the track's 11:00 pm curfew kept him from making a third run. On the Cavalcade tour, Fremont held a Coke race that had Long run 6.60/191.48 over Gordon Mineo and 6.80/194 over Paul Radici to reach the finals. There he went up against Gary Bolger, driving the "Tyrant" Mustang of Dale Creasy. Unfortunately, Long crossed the centerline and had to lift while Gary picked up the victory with a 6.60. It should be noted that while the car wasn't consistent, it did show signs of strength with occasional 6.50s, which were very good for the time. At OCIR's Anniversary race, Russell lasted until the second round before losing to eventual winner Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Vega. His second NHRA national event of the year was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, and he qualified #11 with a 6.639/215.31. He got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Tom McEwen. At OCIR's East-West Championships, Russell beat Don Prudhomme in his first race with a 6.74/212.26, but his engine blew on the line against McEwen in his second race. More problems came for the team at Irwindale's 32 car show in October. Long broke in the first round, giving Tom Prock a solo. The team was a DNQ at the NHRA World Finals in Ontario (times not available). Dennis was from Alaska, but he housed the car in Phoenix. | I distinctly remember Russell and this car being credited with a 6.30/230 early in the 1975 season. We talked about it when he raced at the Thompson, Ohio, Coke Cavalcade race (which he lost in the final to Gordon Mineo). The team was cool, allowing my then 10-year-old brother Tim to polish the car. Who can validate my old memory? - BP

He lost in the semifinals to Don Prudhomme when he went up in smoke. AKA Chain Lightning. - TN | Turned a 6.48/221.67 at Englishtown, NJ, in August '75. - RT | Ran 6.47/213.27 at Indy US Nationals 9/75. | Greer started the '75 season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.53 to qualify #4. A first-round 6.47/224.42 beat Richard Tharp in Mike Burkhart's Satellite. In the second round, a 6.66/223.32 beat Jim Dunn's ailing car. He the semifinals, he received a single when Mike Miller was unable to fire the "Green Elephant." Shirl ran 6.91/161.87 to advance into the final, where he met up with Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's low qualifying Mustang (at 6.32). Both cars had problems hooking up, and Greer got the victory with a 7.03/218.96 over Neil's 7.08/220. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and failed to qualify. On March 2, he was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified on the "bump." In the first round, Greer ran a 6.90, but lost to Tom Prock's 6.67. Things went better at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #7 with a 6.48/230.17. A first-round 6.68/222.22 beat Miller, while in round two, a 6.469 got around Gary Burgin. But in the semifinals, he got out of shape and lost to Prudhomme. He won the first NHRA Division 2 race at Warner Robins, where he qualified #1 with a 6.61 and then set Low ET in the final with a 6.40/219.51 over runner-up Paul Smith's 6.41/229. He was runner-up at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. Luck played a big part in his finish as a first-round 7.06 beat Rodger Hamrick's 9.61. In round two, a 7.12 beat Dale Emery's 10.42 in Gene Snow's car. All that was needed to win in the semifinals was a 9.30 when Tharp lost a rear end. But in the final, Greer's luck ran out as his 9.31/93.00 lost to Raymond Beadle's Low ET shot of 6.58 at 214 in the "Blue Max." Greer won another Division 2 race when he beat Dennis Lockaby's 6.83/199 in the final at Suffolk with a 6.66/201. Shirl lost to Denny Savage in the first round, at the IHRA Springnationals, but he set Top Speed of the meet at 224.43. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.50. He easily got past the first-round and then ran a 6.53 to beat Gordie Bonin's 6.59 in round two. In the semifinals, he met Prudhomme, and both went up in smoke, but the "Snake" recovered first for the win. He was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals, but failed to reach the finals. Shirl set Top Speed of the Meet at the NHRA Grandnationals at 225.00. 6.533 216.34 losing to Prudhomme at the PHR US 131 race.

Notes: This is the Snake's Buttera 'Cuda, built in late '72. Ran in black gel coat for a few races, including the Last Drag Race at Lions (where he was runner-up to Tom McEwen) and the NHRA Supernationals in Ontario. Don qualified #4 at the Lions last drag race with a 6.51. He beat Dale Pulde in M/T's broken Grand Am in round one with another 6.51. In round two, Don went 6.66 to beat Dave Condit's 6.73 in the LA Hooker. In round three, Don ran a consistent 6.67 to defeat Omer Carruthers 6.74. The Tentmaker, the Low ET loser of the second round, replaced Billy Meyer, who was late getting to the line. In the final, McEwen's great 6.39 beat Don's 6.97 in another Snake vs. Mongoose showdown. | The car was eventually painted yellow with Carefree Gum as the primary sponsor. He won Funny Car Eliminator at Indy in '73, running a 6.27 best. In '74, he painted it in US Army colors and won Indy again. - TN

Notes: Dave Braskett and Gary Burgin had raced a Camaro in '71. For the '72 season, they changed to this 116" Buttera-built Vega. Not only did they change the body, but for the '72 season, they also changed from the 392 to a stock-sized, Keith Black built 426. It retained the independent front suspension the Camaro had used and, out back, a Detroit Locker carrying 5.43 gears. Gary was at OCIR in January for the All-Pro Opener. He won the eight-car show by beating Jim Dunn's 6.94/212 in the final with a 6.82/213.27. He didn't do quite as well at the second OCIR All-Pro event, as he lost to Ray Alley's 6.85/209 in the first round, with a 6.94/210.28. Things went bad at the Lions Grand Premiere on January 28. He qualified #2 with a 6.72, but he crashed into Joe Winters' car in the first round, and Burgin's car flipped. He was OK; the car, not so much. The team attempted to qualify at the Pomona Winternationals but was a DNQ (times unavailable). Gary was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He qualified #5 with a 6.87, but a first-round 7.06 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.67. Another loss to Ruth came not in the first round but in the final at the Las Vegas National Open on March 5. Burgin's final round 7.11/207.84 lost to Ruth's 6.97/207. Gary qualified #9 at NHRA Indy at 6.569/225.00 but lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.46/229.59 with a 6.605/217.39. We need to validate the 6.50/226 numbers; were those just the abbreviated Indy numbers? Gary was an NHRA record holder for a short while. Also, 6.66 at 222.22 in winning the All-Pro Series in 1972 and ran 6.61 at OCIR.

Notes: Cogo was at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals in May. I wish I knew the ET he qualified with as he got the #7 spot in the sixteen-car field ahead of drivers such as Don Prudhomme, Don Schumacher, Tom McEwen, etc. But Cogo lost to McEwen in the opening round. Maybe the qualifying order was reversed and he qualified #15 and McEwen was in at #7. I will see what I can dig up.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. Also 5.335 at Seattle 1988. Won 1988 Englishtown Summernationals. | Don started his '88 season by competing at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. An eight-car Funny Car show was run and the "Snake" qualified #4 with a 5.62. He beat Chris Lane in the first round, with a 5.69/257.14, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.38/104 loss to Ed McCulloch's 5.73/255. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.60. Kenny Bernstein beat him in the first round. Things went better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where a 5.48/262 qualified #6. He beat Darrell Amberson in the first round, and in round two, a 5.42/264 got past Scott Kalitta. But in the semifinals against Mark Oswald, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. Prudhomme didn't run any of the IHRA races this year, so the next big event he was at was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where in the second round, his 5.78 lost to Bernstein's 5.73. In mid-May, Don was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He was a bit off as he only qualified #15 with a 5.80 and he lost to Bernstein in the first round. Bernstein seemed to have Prudhomme's number as at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, Kenny stopped Don in the second round. It wasn't Bernstein that kept him from victory at the NHRA Springnationals; it was tire smoke. After qualifying #6 with a 5.56, he smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Mike Dunn in Joe Pisano's car. Things had to get better for the "Snake" and they did in a big way at the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.54/261.70. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.50 and another 5.50/262 beat Bruce Larson in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.55/267 beat Johnny West's 5.68 in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he was up against Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Don prevailed, running a 5.44/260 for the win. So after that, he went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, and wins that as well. There he qualified #2 with a 5.47/257.36. A first-round 5.47/255 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" while in round two, a 5.54/254 beat Oswald. In the semifinals, he dropped back into the 5.4's with a 5.49/257 over Dale Pulde. In the final, he met with long time Funny Car racer Bruce Larson. Bruce had been running 5.5's and in the final he slipped to a 5.63/260 that finished runner-up to Don's track record 5.41 at 257. On August 7, he was at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. The track was great with no less than six cars qualifying with 5.3 times. Leading them all was Prudhomme's 5.30/268.33. Don backed up the ET for a new NHRA record. Unfortunately, after beating John Martin in the first round, the "Snake" smoked the tires in the second round and lost to Tharp.

Notes: Hoover started the '81 season by qualifying #6 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.03/215. This was his first race since his accident in June '80. He lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.56/211 in the first round, with a 6.85/209. As you can tell by the times, traction was marginal. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.28/213.27 best was the first alternate. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #2 with a 5.954/234.37. This was his first five-second run and the 5th entry into the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. His car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." On March 22, he faced Don Prudhomme in a best-of-three-match race at State Capitol Raceway. He lost the match-turning a best of 6.45/201 compared to the "Snake's" 6.25/211. Tom was at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional Opener, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.69/212.26. He really picked it up in the first round when he beat Craig Epperly with a 6.17/238.09. In the semifinals, he beat Tripp Shumake with a 6.25/240.64 (Top Speed), and in the final, he faced Beadle. Hoover won with a 6.32/231.95 over the "Max's" 6.45/231. Hoover's next good showing came at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He even beat Prudhomme in the semifinals before losing in the final to upstart Tom Hovland. Hoover's 6.94/213 finished runner-up to Hovland's 6.85/218. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.31/226.71. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.36/228.43 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.28/235. Back in the NHRA competition on June 21 for the Springnationals, Tom ran 6.12/233.16 to qualify #3. Another 6.12/226 stopped Shirl Greer in Larry Coogle's "Sting" in the first round. His 6.17/224 beat Roy Harris in round two, but in the semifinals, he slowed to 6.36 at 202.24 in a loss to Raymond Beadle's 6.15/227 in the "Blue Max."He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or Englishtown for the Summernationals, but he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. A 6.30/229.06 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.18/235. Tom's 6.45/229.59 beat Brian Conway in round one, but he had to shut down on the line with an oil leak in the semifinals. John Collins was given a solo into the final. On July 26, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Western Regional race. He ran a solo 6.37/233.76 in the opening round after opponent Doc Halladay could not run due to a fire he had during qualifying. In the semifinal, his off-pace 6.75/222.22 lost to the eventual winner Mike Dunn's 6.24/236.

Notes: Paul's season started with this car late in April at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was only an eight-car field and Smith's 6.13 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, and shut down against eventual winner Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. He also qualified #6 at Rockingham's eight-car show for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Sadly, he once again had problems and shut down on the line in the first round, against Kenny Bernstein. Two weeks later (May 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.31 qualified on the "bump"(#8). An opening round 6.30 beat Shirl Greer's 6.47 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In the semifinals, he lost to a quick-leaving Billy Meyer whose 6.48 beat Smith's slightly quicker 6.45. He was at Englishtown for the Night of Thrills race. All ten Funny Cars made two passes with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paul’s times were not good enough to make the final as a first-round 6.43/226 lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.08/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and a 7.08/137.82 in his second race lost to John Speelman's 6.55/207. He was back at Englishtown in July for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.10/240.64 qualified #9. Problem was, he hurt some parts on the pass. He ordered new parts to be sent by overnight express. Paul took $4,800 cash to pay for the parts, but he was robbed by two gunmen who stole the money. His first-round opponent, low qualifier Bernstein, loaned the team the parts they needed for their first-round race. In their race, Bernstein’s 6.08/238 beat Paul's 6.17/231.36. Shortly after that, Smith was at Atlanta for a four-car show, but there a first-round 6.53/205 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.33/230. On July 26, he was at Atlanta again for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/229.59. But more bad luck stepped in when his 'chute released in the first round, against Roy Harris. Early in August, he stopped off at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #7 and an opening round 6.50 upset Bernstein at 6.70. But even in winning, his luck was not good as the car broke and he was unable to return in the semifinals so Bernstein was reinstated. Pontiac version of the Chevy Citation body. Notes: In mid-1969 Big John rebuilt his 'Cuda, replacing the old 392 with a Keith Black 426. The car was repainted, relettered, and Dave Beebe drove at the '69 PDA meet at OCIR, winning Funny Car eliminator over Ongais in the M/T Mach 1. Ran 7.38/205. Rich Siroonian was back at the wheel by Indy. 120" chassis, Fiberglass Trends body. | Just before July, Mazmanian switched from a 392 Hemi to a Keith Black 426 Hemi mounted farther back in the chassis. At Irwindale for their Fourth of July race, Beebe qualified second with a 7.73, but broke against Larry Fullerton in the semis. The next day (July 5) for the OCIR Nitro Championships, he qualified third with a 7.64, but lost early. At Irwindale's Race with a Reason on July 12, Beebe won the first-round with a 7.54/195.64 over Ray Alley (7.93/184.82), but both he and Bob Smith broke in the semis with Dave taking the win. In the final against Danny Ongais, he broke again and lost. He beat Ongais in the final at the PDA Championships on July 19 with a 7.45/205.01 (Top Speed) over Danny's 7.55/193.54. He qualified #1 with a 7.56 and a first-round 7.45 beat Steve Bovan (7.90). In the second round, he set Low ET at 7.38/204.08 over Gas Ronda (8.93). In the semifinal a 7.89 beat Gene Conway (10.86). On August 2 he was at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships. Dave made it to the final by stopping Larry Fullerton in the semifinals with a strong 7.44/202.24. In the final, he fouled against Pete Bagnard's Nova. Another win came on August 9 at the OCIR Anniversary Race. He singled with a 7.94/191.08 when Pete Bagnard broke. Ran a semifinal 7.64/197.80 (Top Speed) over Gary Gabelich who brushed the guardrail, and a final round 7.61/197.36 (Low ET) over Ed Lenarth who broke. Shortly after this Rich Siroonian returned to driving John's car. - Ron Howard

Notes: Loehr ran this car, his fourth and last Mustang funny, for a year before selling it to Bob Veselka (Corpus Christi, Tex.). Veselka ran it for a few months in 1970 as the "Going Texas Mustang." Like many funny car pilots, Loehr abandoned floppers and moved to Pro Stocks in 1970. - RT | After running a 392 Hemi-powered Mustang with great success in '68, it was a little surprising that Dick went back to the temperamental SOHC Ford engine for '69. It almost paid off as near the end of the season; he had one of the strongest funny cars in the nation when it was running right. The Chapman-built 125" wheelbase chassis was unusual as it was built so that Dick could relocate the engine forward or backward in the frame. This was done by a hydraulic cylinder. This could be done right from the driver’s seat while staging the car. The idea was to aid in weight transfer depending on traction at the strip at which he was racing. The driveshaft was splined to fit all engine locations. The SOHC engine used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Crew Chief John Skiba ported and polished the steel heads, and a pair of Isky 650 cams were used. Skiba also prepared the blower. A Hilborn injector fed the 68% nitro mix to the engine. Fiberglass Ltd. made the Mustang body, and the whole car weighed 1,800 lbs. | Dick qualified at the March Meet at Bakersfield and beat Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round, with a 7.90/188.67. He broke in the semifinal, however, letting Rich Siroonian single into the final. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the HRM Championships. He also failed to qualify on March 22 for an eight-car show at Lions. In April, Loehr was at Connecticut for a best of three match against Frank Federici in the "Shark" Corvette. The Mustang was having bad handling problems, and he lost two straight. He was still ironing out the bugs to his car when he was paired up against Jim Liberman for a match race at Aquasco on April 20. Liberman beat him two straight for the match race win. He had a rematch against JJ on May 14 at US 131 Martin, Mich. Jim's 7.80/188 won the first race when Dick fouled away a 7.86/189.06. Dick won the next two races to win the match with runs of 7.72/186.72 and 7.77/185.94 over Liberman's 7.95/189 and 7.76/188. He lost in the first round, on May 16 at the UDRA race at Union Grove when Clare Sanders beat him in Liberman's second car. On May 29, back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., for another UDRA race, Loehr got sideways in the first round, and lost to Pat Minick's 7.72/184. At St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 1, they held a four-car race with the winner being decided on who won the most rounds. Dick won his first race with a 7.75/184.80 over Clare Sanders' 7.91/184. He got crossed-up and shut down to an 11.09 to lose to Terry Hedrick's track record 7.56 at 192.70. In his third race, a 7.59/193.54 beat Don Schumacher's out-of-shape run. Hedrick was declared the winner for winning three rounds, while Loehr had won two and was runner-up. He went to Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals and bagged a win, running a first-round 7.61 and a second-round 7.71 over Fritz Callier. In the final, a 7.72 beat Roger Lindamood for the title. A 7.82/196.07 qualified him fifth for the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but Callier's 8.03/172 beat Loehr in the first round. This was followed by another win on July 3 at US 131 at Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race where he set a 7.36 track record and Top Speed of the meet at 202.78. The next day (July 4), he won another UDRA race at Cordova, setting another track record at 7.41. On July 6, a match race was run at Milan against Lindamood. Roger won the first race with a track record 7.41/200.44 over Dick. At the PHR Championships, a 7.67/189.47 beat Hank Clark's Rebel in the first round. In round two, he advanced when Tom McEwen broke. But in the semis, a 7.49/202 by Minick beat Dick's 7.54/191.48. At New York on August 17 for the AHRA Nationals, Dick Harrell ran a 7.48/200 in round two to stop Loehr's 7.68/190. He ran a 7.35/200.44 at the US Nationals to qualify fifth, but he slept on the line in the first round, and lost to Jack Chrisman's 7.66 with a tenth quicker 7.56. An early '70 issue of National Dragster had an article on Loehr which mentioned that he had run a best of 7.20/205 in this car. Best NHRA national event times of 7.354/200.44 at Indy. Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight-cars. But at one time he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of AA/Funny Cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Stamping Co. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides built cars, including a front-hinge flip top funny car. The Barracuda ran a best of 7.22/205 in 1969 as No. 1 qualifier, Low ET at NHRA Nationals, Indy. - Danny White | Don started the year by qualifying #1 with a 7.50 at the Irwindale New Year's Day Race. A first-round 7.59/195.64 beat Lew Arrington's 8.06/195. In the second round, a 7.52/198.66 took care of Jim Liberman's ailing Nova and in the semifinal he set a 7.44 track record at 198.66 over a fouling Dick Bourgeois. In the final, a blown trans stopped his march to victory. He again qualified #1 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.67/194.38. He was upset by a new car in the first round, Danny Ongais. At Pomona on February 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, Don could only muster an 8.02/195.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying second. A first-round 8.24 beat a crossed-up Dave Beebe in the Super Chief, but an 8.10 by Rich Siroonian in round two stopped his 8.12/191.08. On February 9 at OCIR for the second All-Pro race, he qualified fourth with a 7.63/192.30 and he made it into the final, meeting Siroonian who dropped a 7.39/195 bombshell on him. The following week on February 16 for the Stardust Open at Las Vegas he made it into the semifinal before Ongais' 7.88/193 put him on the trailer. He set Top Speed at 7.72/199.11 in qualifying fourth at Riverside for the HRM Championships, but he lost fire in the first round. On March 29 he competed in the final OCIR All-Pro race and had an easy first-round when Dave Beebe broke. In the semis against Ongais, both cars ran 7.71, but Don was disqualified for crossing the centerline. Jim Liberman faced Schumacher at a match race at Connecticut on April 6 and Jim beat Don three straight. A rematch was set for April 19 at Blaney. Liberman won the first race and Don's 8.00/191 won the second over JJ's 8.07/182. So both were loaded for bear for the final race. Jim's 8.00/182 won over Schumacher's track records of 7.94/190. At Aquasco's fourth annual Funny Car Invitational on May 4, Don ran a first-round 7.95/189.86 over George Reese, but Liberman's Low ET 7.81/189 shot in the semifinal beat his 7.98/191.88. Another match race was run on May 10 at York US 30 against Eddie Schartman. Don beat Schartman two straight before racing the backup car of Al Graeber and setting track records of 7.42/196.92. On May 27, Aquasco held an eight-car show and Don won his first-round race with a 7.84/194.38 and in the semifinal his 8.02/189.06 beat Ron Rivero who lost a transmission. Unfortunately, Schumacher also lost a trans so he was unable to make the final. He went to US 131, Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race on May 29, but he got out-of-shape in the first round, and lost to Gary Dyer's 7.55/193. Minnesota held a six car show on June 1, and Don broke against Hedrick (7.75/188) in his first race. In his second race, he beat Clare Sanders' 8.31/175 with a 7.58/194.80 (Top Speed). In his third race, he got out-of-shape and lost to Dick Loehr's 7.59/193. He got a big win at Aquasco on June 22 for the President's Gold Cup Championships. He beat Malcolm Durham's 8.05/186 in the first round, with a 7.77/194.38. Don singled in the semifinal with a 7.98/196.50 (Top Speed). In the final he set Low ET at 7.68/195.22 in beating Liberman's 7.75/194. On July 19, Don raced at the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships. He beat the ailing Colt 45 in the first round, with a 9.80/126.93, but lost to John Dekker's 8.74/173 in the semifinal with a 9.00/155.70. At the Cars Magazine meet, he ran a first-round 7.54 at a track speed record of 201.34 over Frank Federici, but he lost fire on the line against Frank Oglesby in the second round. He had a rare (for him) first-round loss at the PHR Championships on August 2 when Randy Walls' 7.69/180 beat Don's 7.86/191.08. At the next event, the AHRA Nationals at York on August 17, he more than made up for the first-round loss by winning the race with a final 7.39/198.22 over a fouling Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian. He set Top Speed at 200.88 and had beaten Terry Hedrick in the second round and ran a 7.30 in the semifinals while beating Dick Harrell's 7.39. At the US Nationals on September 1, Don qualified second with a 7.27 at only 189.47, and a first-round 7.22/204 over Jess Tyree's 7.46/199 was good for Low ET of the meet. But against Bruce Larson in the second round, he lost a transmission putting him out of the show. A big match race against Rich Siroonian was run at Irwindale on October 4 and Don won the first race with a 7.72/195.64 over Rich's 7.80/191. But Siroonian came back to win the next two races with runs of 7.63/201 and 7.43/204 over Schumacher's 7.65/197.26 and 7.69/200.44. On October 11, OCIR held its Funny Car Invitational event with eight-cars going for the win. Don advanced past the first-round when Ed Lenarth fouled and in the semifinal, a 7.52- 201.79 lost to Pat Minick's 7.40/200. He didn't do very well on October 18 at the Irwindale East/West meet when he lost to Ron Leslie's 7.84/185 in the first round, knocking him into the consolation round where be again lost in the first round. This time a 7.40/200 by Gas Ronda beat his 7.83/183.83. He ran much better the following day (October 19) at the Fremont Fallnationals, where a first-round 7.50/185.56 sent Terry Hedrick's 7.75/175 to the trailer. A semifinal 7.58/196.92 advanced when Siroonian lost a trans. In the final, a 7.53/198.22 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.71/186.32 in Mickey Thompson's white Mustang. That was followed by another win on October 25 over a sixteen-car field at Lions for the East/West Championships. A first-round 7.49/188.67 beat Randy Walls' 7.59/188, and a round two 7.52/182.92 advanced when Lenarth broke. In the final he met Siroonian and a 7.32/193.96 beat Rich's ailing 9.54/79. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but failed to get to the finals. A 7.55 on November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet qualified him first on the Chrysler team. But the following week (November 16) he won only one of his three races. A 7.57/197.80 beat Danny Ongais' 7.62/191. In his second race Terry Hedrick's 7.46/188 beat Don's 7.50/195.65. In his final race he exploded a trans against Mike Van Sant in the Invader. He ran well on November 9 at Carlsbad for the PDA Race of Champions. He ran a 7.60/188.10 over Liberman's 7.60/191 and a semifinal 7.56/187.50 beat Snow who had driveline problems. In the final, Larry Reyes 7.46/195 was too much for Schumacher's 7.84/166.66. - Ron Howard

Notes: Dated photos confirm this car ran under the banner of "Fred Gibb Super Camaro Dealers" in the summer of '69. 7.37 Green Valley ick Harrell was the model drag racer of the 1960s. His race cars were immaculate his car haulers were kept clean, and Harrell's interaction with sponsors and fans was second to none. Known as "Mr. Chevrolet," Harrell was one the most successful racers in AHRA drag racing history. Dick raced a series of stockers, super stockers, and factory experimentals until reaching the funny car ranks. Many felt his best funny car was the Fred Gibb-sponsored 1969 Camaro. Don Hardy built the car in his Floydada, Texas, shop. The Camaro featured a 427 Chevrolet Rat for power backed by an automatic transmission. The car won many match races during 1969, running a best of 7.35 at 200 MPH plus. Info provided by James Ibusuki. - BS | On February 16, Harrell ran 7.81 for the Miami-Hollywood track record. Also ran 7.58 at Bristol. - Ron Howard

Notes: Ran 8.06/182.92 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. | Jim was at Irwindale for the New Year's Funny Car race on January 2. He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with an 8.91/166.66, but he lost in the first round. He was at Fremont on Jan 7 for a best of three match race against Ed Schartman. Ed "rattled" his cage winning three straight. Schartman's best was an 8.14 while JJ's best was an 8.61. He competed at Pomona in the S/XS class for the NHRA Winternationals. Jim beat Pete Gates in the first round, before losing to Roger Wolford's 8.47/172 in the second round with an 8.79/167.59. On March 19, Carlsbad held an eight-car event and 15 FCs attempted to qualify. Jim ran an 8.84 for the #5 spot. He beat low qualifier Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 9.00/164.23. In the semifinal, he ran his best ever (to this point) 8.45/164.23 to beat Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-Cuda." In the final, he was to run Randy Walls, but Walls had blown his transmission in the semis so Liberman soloed for the victory. On April 1, Jim was driving the "Brutus" GTO at a match race against Malcolm Durham at Capitol. He blew the GTO's engine in the second race and he pulled his Nova of the truck to race against Durham in the final race. It paid off as the two had both won a race each and in the decisive last race, the Nova hustled to an 8.75/162.74 for the match race win. Jim ran Schartman at York, Pa., for a match race on April 29. He won the first race with an 8.63/163.04 when Ed lost a rear end. In the second race, Schartman set an 8.17 track record over JJ who lost a transmission. In the third race, Jim wrapped up the match with a blower exploding in the lights pass of 8.54/163.04 that just beat Schartman's 8.54/151. On May 10 he was at Cecil County for the Factory Showdown. He crossed the center line in the first round, on an 8.31/171.10 pass against Jack Chrisman. After his first-round loss, he came out and ran a solo pass of 8.19. It was his best ever to this point. Set Maple Grove track records of 8.29/172.85 on May 13. Also ran a 7.83 Irwindale track record. On May 26 at Gary, Ind., US 30 for the UDRA Championships, ran 8.40/168.59 over Roger Wolford's 8.66/168.54 in the semifinal. - Ron Howard

Notes: Halladay was at Cordova for its World Series of Drag Racing event in August. The race was a two-day affair, and he wasn't there on Friday. He showed up on Saturday. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. His 7.07/223.93 beat a wheelstanding "Jungle Jim" Liberman in his first race. In the second race, he ran 6.71/231.69 over a troubled Bob Pickett in the M/T Grand Am. His ETs were not good enough to advance into the final.
