Notes: AKA the Super Chief. This is Steve Bovan at OCIR in 1968. The car ran mainly on the West Coast in 1968. The fans loved the car as the Keith Black hemi always ran great. Nelson held a contest asking the fans to name the car. They came up with "Super Chief" for his Indian (Native American) heritage. The 7.68 was run at OCIR. - Danny White | Steve started driving the car in early April. He raced Nelson's car at Carlsbad on April 7 for an eight-car show where he made it into the semifinals before Jack Chrisman's 8.06/182 beat him. On April 13, he was at OCIR, where 20 cars ran the first-round, and the lowest eight ETs advanced into round two. Bovan had no problem advancing as his 7.81/195.64 was Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. In round two, however, the big Charger broke, giving Dick Loehr a free ride into the semifinals. He was back at OCIR on May 4 for its 1968 1/2 Funny Car Team Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. Another event at OCIR that he participated in was the Fuel Altered vs. Funny Cars race on May 18. Steve won all three of his races and set a 7.68 track record. He first beat a fouling Leon Fitzgerald with a 7.76/193.96. Then a 7.85/194.38 beat Willie Borsch's 8.17/187. Then he set his track record with a speed of 195.64 while beating Gary Reed's 8.06/195 in his last race. - RH | Four-page feature in 2/69 Super Stock and FX magazine. - RT

Notes: The '68 season had to be the best for Chevy-powered FCs. Many of them were being built, often setting Low ET or Top Speed at many events. The Chevy engine was doing this at a fraction of the cost compared to running a Chrysler or a Ford. The engine lived, and it was surprising that it could not compete in TF. But many racers sure took note that building a Chevy was a far cheaper and easier way to enter fuel Funny Car racing. The party ended early in the '69 season as after the Winter meets, the Chevys were hard-pressed just to qualify at most big events, on a local level that still fared well until '70. Huston Platt was always a Chevy supporter even when they were not competitive. He never gave up, and in '68, he reaped the rewards as his Camaro ran really well. Platt took a big win over a sixteen-car field on February 18 at the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships at Orlando, Florida. He ran an easy first-round 9.48/150 over Tom Smith's unblown 'Cuda. In the second round, an 8.29/177.86 beat Pete Gates'8.91/159. In the semifinal, an 8.27/175.51 beat Frank Federici. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.25/179.28, beating Kelly Chadwick's 8.60/163. Early in April, he was at Southeastern Dragway for a four-car show. In his first race, he defeated Arnie Beswick's GTO. He lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the second race, and in the third race, both he and Dick Bourgeois crossed the centerline and almost collided. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the All-American Funny Car Championships. His 8.14/182 won when Della Woods shut down early in the opening round. In the second round, his 8.25/183.28 fell to Don Biggers' 8.01/189.

Notes: Johnny West, Scott Graham, Mike Lui, and Wyatt Radke started building a new car on November 27, 1992. The team finished it in Jan, the day before Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event. On the car's first run, Wyatt's first run was an early shutoff to 7.02/127.87. The team only made one other pass at Firebird, an 11.62/79.89. Things went much better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.25/284.62 qualified #11, and a shut off 7.20/122.01 advanced past round one when Mark Oswald failed to fire. In the second round, his 5.97/211.86 lost to eventual winner Del Worsham. A week later, they were in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Radke qualified #11 again with a 5.45/267.30. He improved to 5.37/284.45 in the first round to beat Oswald's 5.39/217, but a 5.39/233.52 in the second round lost to Del Worsham's 5.25/283. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. There, Wyatt's 5.33/264.31 qualified #10. In round one, an off-pace 5.67/251.32 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.13/281. He was the #14 qualifier at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.43/271.82, but he lost to Force in the first round. He got back at Force at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and Wyatt's 5.44/263.15 qualified #7. He faced Force in round one, and John smoked the tires while Radke got the win light with a 5.33/240.64. Unfortunately, the Daytona broke in the semifinals against Gordie Bonin. The team made up for it at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, where a 5.27/284.09 qualified #2. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.49/268.81 and a 5.35/281.33 stopped Whit Bazemore's 5.43/269 in round two. But in the semifinals, old veteran Tom Hoover ran 5.44/256 to end Radke's hopes with a 5.52/271.73. The team skipped the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown but was back on the Springnationals. A 5.142 was low qualifier, Low ET, and a new track record. After qualifying #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Radke beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.32/277.60. A second-round 5.24/279.24 beat Chuck Etchells' close 5.26/282. In the semifinals, he faced Bonin, and Gordie got off the line first, and his 5.31/284 beat Wyatt's quicker 5.30/278.89. At the NHRA Western Nationals, Wyatt's 5.45/265.48 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he lost to Cruz Pedregon in the first round. That was Wyatt's last event in the car. Best times of 5.142/288.18 from Columbus.

Notes: Tom West sez: This is one of those blue flame shots. This would have been from the Manufacturers Meet in '71, I think. This is the IFS Buttera chassis, but the body appears to be a bit high. Did something happen to the original body? I can't imagine building the car to sit quite that high. Also, it did not appear to be the best car to see out of either. One of several paint jobs he ran in 71. | Don Schumacher's new car for '71 was a 120" John Buttera car. The Ed Pink built 1,500 hp 426 Hemi was stroked to 480 cubic inches. The rods and pistons were by Pink. A Cragar manifold supported the Larry Bowers prepared blower, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The 80% nitro mix was pumped into the engine by an Enderle injection unit. A two-speed Lenco transmitted the power to a Halibrand Quick-change rear with 5.12 gears. | Don started the season at Irwindale on January 1 for its New Year's Funny Car Festival. Traction was poor, and Don's 7.43 qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field. He faced low qualifier (6.99) Jim Dunn in the first round, and Schumacher smoked the tires and shut off to 8.20 in a loss to Dunn's 6.96. The next day he was at Fremont for its New Year's Funny Car race. It was another sixteen-car show. Don's 7.41/197.36 in the first round, beat Dick Bourgeois' Javelin. But in the second round, he had engine problems and shut off against Kenney Goodell. On January 10, he was at Lions for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified with a 7.32, but a 7.35/195.66 in the first round, lost to Larry Arnold's 7.12. Don barely made the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals; his 7.306/208.81 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. He lost to Rich Siroonian in the first round, 7.03/205 to 7.67/184. He did considerably better at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. During qualifying, he was credited with a (play with my clocks) 6.56/204.54. It was a 32 car show, and in the first round, Don got a solo and ran 7.18/204.08. He beat Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered Vega in round two, but in the third round, his 7.01/198.22 lost to Mart Higginbotham's 6.90/204. Don qualified #1 at the NHRA Springnationals in Dallas at 6.787/214.28. He beat Tom McEwen in round one, 6.02/205.21 to a fouling 6.96/207. In round two, he got some Winternational revenge on Rich Siroonian, 6.78/210.77 to 6.87/216. Don continued rolling on in the semis, his 6.80/210 defeating Sush Matsubara's 6.96/216. In the final, Schumacher set Low ET of the Meet at 6.76/218.44 to defeat Kelly Brown's 6.81.

It was another eight-car show and Pete's 7.89/188.67 in the first round, beat Tom Prock in Al Bergler's car. But in the semifinals, he lost to the strong Chevy-powered car of Charlie Therwhanger. The team went to Maple Grove on June 26 for the NHRA Division 1 race. Pete qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 7.28 and in round one, he made an 8.35 solo when Tom Sneden broke and was unable to run. In the semifinals, his 7.41/203.16 lost to eventual winner Casey Powell's 7.19/197.

He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.46/222.55 best was the first alternate. Things went much better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.14/287.44. In the opening round, his 5.19/289.66 defeated Tom Hoover's tire-smoking 6.04/163. In the second round, his 5.41/215.67 beat Richard Hartman's 5.54/221. Worsham's run ended in the semifinal, where Chuck Etchell's 5.07/305 beat his 5.32/229.12. He also qualified #7 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.16/280.89. In round one, Del's 5.22/278.03 dropped Cruz Pedregon. Tim Wilkerson had problems against him in round two and shut off to 10.08, while Worsham advanced at 7.35/121.47. He gave Hofmann a good race in the semifinal, but his 5.17286.35 fell to Al's 5.12/290. Still, back-to-back semifinal finishes were impressive. He also qualified for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. A 5.14/289.94 qualified #5. In the opening round, he beat Tony Pedregon's 5.26/285 with a 5.21/281.42. He lost to the eventual winner John Force's 5.21/287 with a 5.30/271.16 in yet another semifinal finish. Del's best times came in qualifying at the NHRA World Finals, where a 5.036/299.70 earned him the #6 qualifying slot. He lost to Tony Pedregon in round two.

Notes: Dale didn't run at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, but he was at the NHRA Gatornationals in mid-March. He qualified #5 with a 6.06/233.76, but he shut off when the car went into a wheelstand in the first round. His 6.94/149.00 lost to Al Segrini, who had his own problems at 6.40/223. In April, he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. He qualified #3 with a 6.49/218.97 and went on to win. In the first round, he ran 6.41/197.80 over Dominic Santucci's 6.92/170. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-final at 6.25/231.36 while defeating Tim Grose's 6.74/195. In the final, his 6.30/226.13 got the victory over Murf McKinney's 7.21. Near the end of April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a tough eight-car field, and drivers such as Raymond Beadle, Don Prudhomme, and Dale Pulde failed to make it. Dale did, however, run 6.16/234.98 for the #7 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, running a 6.30/218.34 best that was good for the third alternate. He didn't run at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 6.05/232. He ran his best NHRA national event times of the year with a 6.049/238.72 defeat of Tom McEwen but lost the second round to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." The following week (July 20), Dale was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified #6. He lost to Dick Rosberg in the first round. In August, he won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Armstrong set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.20/231.95 to beat future employer Kenny Bernstein. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He ran 6.20/233.76 to qualify #2. In round one, he picked up to a 6.10 (Low ET) at 236.22 to beat a tire-smoking Al Segrini. In the semifinals, his 6.15 beat John Force, who also smoked the tires. In the final, he faced off against Pulde. This time, the "Speed Racer" smoked the tires, Armstrong shut off, and Pulde got the victory with a 6.16/237. He got another win on August 17 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.08. He beat Paul Smith in the "Sting" in the first round, with a 6.21/227.84, and he ran an easy single in the semifinals to go into the final against Billy Meyer. The two had a good race, but Dale's 6.16/236.84 got the win over Meyer's close 6.20/238. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.10/234.98. In the first round, an off pace 6.39/220.58 lost to Meyer's 6.13/229. The following week (September 7), he was at Jackson County Sports Park in Medford for the NHRA Division race there. Dale qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/221.13. He ran 6.54/216.86 to beat Gary Lewis in the first round, but in the semifinals, his 6.38/218.97 lost to eventual winner Beadle's 6.09/235. Mike Kase owner; wrecked Challenger bodied car. Ran 6.101/234.08 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80.

Notes: Rosberg failed to qualify for the NHRA Gatornationals, but the following week (March 18), he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he lost early. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, Dick's 6.250/231.95 qualified #10, but an opening round 6.357/212.76 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.13/231 in the "Blue Max." At the end of July, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight car show and he lasted until the semi-finals, where he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme. Rosberg was at New England in August for the NHRA Division 1 Final. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.23/230.17 (Top Speed) and an easy 6.50/211.79 advanced in the first round when George Johnson fouled. In the semifinals, he beat Jimmy King with a 6.32/220.50, but he broke on the run and was unable to run in the final against Al Bergler. He was the third alternate at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals with a 6.150/235.60 best.

Notes: Everyone loved the "Chi-Town Hustler." It had a mystique about it. The team didn't race at many major events as they did quite well on the match race trail. That being said, they could hold their own against any nationally touring pro quite easily. Seeing the team at a national event was kind of like seeing a movie star without their make-up. Ron Colson drove the car in '73, and if you had the "Hustler" at your track, you were sure to draw a crowd. In January, Colson started the '73 season with a win at the Miami-Hollywood Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and Ron qualified #3 with a 6.78. He ran 6.66, a track record 6.64, and a 6.67 to reach the finals, where he met Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" Mustang. A final round 6.69/218.44 got the victory over Al's 6.95/189. Colson competed at the eight-car show for the Spring Drag Race at Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway. His 7.33 defeated Al Hanna's 7.48 in the "Eastern Raider in the first round." But in the semifinals, Wayne Mahaffey set Low ET with a 6.90 in the "Alabamian" to beat Ron's 7.12. Shortly after that, he was back in Miami for the Winter Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car show, and in the opening round, Colson's 6.80/209.79 beat Shirl Greer's 6.98/207. A semifinal 6.70/213.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.71/211 in the "Blue Max." The team showed up at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals, where Ron qualified #4 with a 7.00. In round one, he ran 6.98/206.89 to beat Dave Condit's 7.11/200 in the "LA Hooker." Colson lost in the second round. On March 16/18, the team made a rare NHRA National event appearance at the Gatornationals. A strong 6.461/226.13 qualified #2, and a first-round 6.48 beat Paul Radici. In round two, the Charger slowed to a 6.70 that lost to Al Bergler's 6.57. Ron was in Connecticut in April for a four-car show. He ran Low ET at 6.61/218. A best of three match race against Tom Hoover was run at Minnesota, and Colson won three, straight setting a new track record 6.54. His best speed was 222. On April 28, the "Chi-Town Hustler" was at Capitol, and while Colson didn't reach the finals, he was one of four cars there that ran 6.5s. He ran 6.52/221 in beating "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.69/200 in one of his races. The next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Colson qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.62. In the first round, he was up against Tharp, who had only run 7.63 in qualifying. In their race, Ron improved to a 6.58/221.13, but Tharp improved even more, running a 6.33/211 to put Colson on the trailer. Colson did really well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the first round, his 6.62 defeated Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car. In round two, he beat Greer. He got a solo in the semifinal when Hanna lost oil pressure. In the final, he faced Bill Leavitt. The "Chi-Town" lost a supercharger, and Leavitt ran 6.71/207 for the win. Colson did get Top Speed honors at 221.67. Shortly after that, he was in New England for its fourth Funny Car Tourney race. Unfortunately, breakage killed Colson's chances when the car failed to fire for its first-round race with Dale Pulde. Breakage continued to plague the team at York US 30, where they were to run the "Blue Max" in a best of three match. Tharp won their first race when Colson broke a crankshaft. Ron was done for the day, and Tharp ran two solo passes for the match race win. July started right for the team, with Colson winning over an eight-car field at Edgewater's Funny Car Invitational. Shirley Muldowney fell to Ron's 6.85/212.76 in round one, and in the semifinals, his 6.83 advanced as Sanders broke a fuel pump. His final-round opponent was Low ET setter (6.56) Russell Long in the "Pabst" Charger. The two had a good race that saw Colson's 6.77/215.82 (Top Speed) victorious over Long's 6.89/206. The "Chi-Town Huster" was also at Rockford near the end of the month for its Manufacturer's Meet. Things didn't go so well as Colson lost to both Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega and Leavitt. In August, Colson was one of several cars that failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The team returned to Edgewater for its Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. Ron smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Foster. Colson won the Dixie Nationals held at Blaney Drag Strip in October. He beat Liberman's 6.88 in the final with track record times of 6.65/218.44. The team also returned to Lakeland on October 14 for the IHRA Nationals. It was supposed to be a sixteen-car show, but the field was too short. Colson qualified #6 and a 6.86/209.79 beat Foster's 6.94/174 in round one. Unfortunately, Colson lost in the next round. Gainesville was the team's only NHRA national event in 1973.

Notes: Jim qualified #22 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.79/215.31. A first-round 6.77/221.67 lost to Larry Fullerton's 6.58/217. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Jim qualified #8 with a 6.55, but he lost to Dave Condit driving the "L. A. Hooker" in the first round. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for the AHRA Grand American where he reached the semifinals before he fouled against Tommy Grove. Dragway 42 hosted the next AHRA Grand American at the end of May and Jim qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round his 8.56/134.52 advanced as his opponent, Dale Pulde, broke in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am. But in round two, it was Jim who broke, giving "Jungle Jim" Liberman a free ride into the semifinals. On June 3, he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified with a 6.92, but lost early. The following weekend he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.93. He improved to 6.79/218.97 in the first round, to upset Ed McCulloch's 6.84/218. In round two, he defeated Don Schumacher with a 6.84/211.76, but a semifinal 6.99/176.47 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 6.71/222. Jim won the Amarillo WCS meet in June 73 with a 6.98/189.49 over Leroy Goldstein who smoked the tires in the Candies & Hughes car. Early in July, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim reached the final against Raymond Beadle, but both went up in smoke and Beadle's 7.39/223 got the victory over Nicoll's 7.59/189. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.58 qualified #10 and in the opening round, his 6.57 beat Tom Prock. But in round two, his 6.83 lost to Dale Emery's 6.46. He got a win at St. Louis on August 5 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Jim qualified #4 with a 6.65 and he beat Ira Hollensbe and Doc Halladay in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, Billy Meyer smoked the tires against him and Nicoll's 6.65/209.31 moved into the final against Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" had run 6.67 in his semifinal win so Jim had lane choice. It proved worth having as his 6.63/210.78 took the win over Prudhomme. Shortly after that he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The show was run differently as all cars raced the first-round, but only the eight lowest ETs, win or lose, moved into the first-round of the race. Jim’s 6.71/204.54 made the show, but in the first round, his 6.66/210.77 lost to Clare Sanders' 6.58/222 in the "Ramchargers" car. He ran at the AHRA National Challenge race at the end of August. A 6.58/213.27 qualified #5 in the 32 car field. He improved slightly to a 6.56/218 in the first round, to beat alternate DeWayne Engness. In round two, his 6.72/217 stopped Sush Matsubara and a round three 6.96/205 put Meyer on the trailer. He beat a tire-smoking Schumacher in the semifinal with a 6.77/206 and was to face Prudhomme for the money. Unfortunately, while pulling up to the line in the final, the car started leaking oil and he was shut down. Schumacher got back in on the "break rule.” | AKA Superman. Best NHRA national event times were 6.463 at Indy and 226.13 at Ontario. We originally had a 6.25/240 recorded for 1973, which was too fast for that year. Did Jim ever run those numbers?

Notes: Ran in 1973 and 1974. Was this one of the last space frame chassis? This 6.61 seems too quick. | Harry was at Miami-Hollywood's Funny Car Nationals in January It was a sixteen-car show and he qualified #11. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round to Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” He was back at Miami for another show in March. He qualified with a 7.37, but a 7.42 in the first round, lost to Ed McCulloch.

Notes: Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. | This team spent most of its time on the match race trail. They figured there was not a lot of money to be made at NHRA events and preferred booked in shows. Colson really ran well at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.62/214.79. During eliminations, he set Low ET at 6.50 and in the final, beat Raymond Beadle who was driving for Don Schumacher. The final wasn't pretty as his 7.28/226.70 (Top Speed) beat Beadle's equally troubled 7.38/220 for the victory. The team was at Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals where 35 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Ron’s 6.57 qualified #5 and he improved to 6.51/222.77 in the first round, to beat Beadle's 6.78/193. But in round two, eventual winner Billy Meyer ran 6.37/218 to beat Colson's 6.53/218.97. Colson got some revenge on Meyer at the next IHRA event, the Northern Nationals held at Mid-America Dragway on June 30. There, he stopped Billy in the final although Meyer sort of handed the win to the "Chi-Town" bunch when he had to shut off on the line when his headers fell off. Colson ran 7.31/216.86 for the win after earlier posting Top Speed at 222.58. The "Chi-Town Hustler" team always made a point in running at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The race was run with all cars running the first-round and the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. In the qualifying round, Colson ran 6.63/217.39. This was enough to advance into the second round where both he and "Jungle Jim" Liberman got out of shape. Ron’s 7.26/189.87 beat Jim's 7.81/197. The semifinals saw Colson run 6.49/211.26 to stop Jim Nicoll at 6.90/154. This moved him into the final against Don Prudhomme. Don was running really well with times of 6.52, 6.30, and 6.35 to reach the final. Colson's crew chief, Austin Coil, must have added some clutch for the final as the Charger went into a huge wheelstand that crashed down hard, busting their oil pan. Prudhomme was long gone with a 6.49 for the victory. Ron also ran well at the IHRA US Open. He qualified #8 and made his way to the semifinals, where a motor blowing 6.56 beat Denny Savage's 6.85 in the "Hawaiian.” Unfortunately, the team was unable to repair in time and Savage was reinstated for the final. Colson also had problems at the IHRA All-American race at Bristol. He qualified for the show, but broke a set of titanium pistons. Alternate Larry Gould took their place in the field.

Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Collins only ran two NHRA national events in '86, including the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a 5.67/252.10. In the first round, he beat a tire smoking Tom Hoover with a 5.80/210.77. In round two, he ran an off pace 6.10/167.28 that lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.68. Notes: Photo from 1975 US Nationals. Jake drove for Pisano at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He was substituting for Sush Matsubara due to injuries Sush had received from a motorcycle crash the week before. The car suffered a bad fire at the Bakersfield March Meet. Jake qualified the Vega with a 6.46/203.16 for the #8 spot in the twelve car field. A first-round 6.29/225.56 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.46/223, but in round two, his 6.71 lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde's 6.46 in the "Eastern Raider.” Unfortunately, at the top end of the track, a gasket let go and the car went up in flames. Jake got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was charred pretty good. It didn't take the team long to repair the damage as just two weeks later (March 16), they were at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West. It was a sixteen-car show and Johnston qualified #4 with a 6.70. He made his way to the final by beating Leroy Chadderton with a 6.86/208.81 followed by a 6.90/187.50 in round two over Bob Pickett who was driving the "Lil' Demon.” A semifinal 6.95/186.33 trailered Gary Densham and moved him into the final. His final round opponent was the #1 qualifier (6.57) Tom McEwen. The edge would have to go to McEwen as he ran a best of 6.58 during eliminations. The final turned out to be close; Jake improved to 6.78/220.04, but still lost to McEwen's 6.77/213. He lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round, at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. In May, Jake won the Irwindale Fox Hunt race, stopping Gary Burgin in the final. Another win at Irwindale came in June at its Doubleheader event. It was an eight-car field and Johnston beat Densham and Fred Mooneyham to reach the final. There he faced Jim Dunn. The two had a good race with Jake's 6.57/223.26 (Top Speed) getting the measure of Dunn's 6.67/220. Jake qualified #13 at Indy at 6.368/223.32. He lost a close first-round match to Gene Snow, 6.283/230.17 to 6.322/214.28. The team qualified #10 at Ontario at 6.331/225.00, but again, lost in the first round. Norm Wilcox’s outstanding 6.164/218.97 took the measure of their improved 6.311/220.04. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/75

Notes: Gary Clapshaw had a good year in '95. He won his first NHRA National event and ran well throughout the year. He started his season at Bakersfield in January for its warm-up race. Gary was the third quickest Funny Car, and he bettered the previous career-best of 5.24 with a great 5.12/255.75. A large part of the credit had to go to his new crew chief, Mike Kloeber. A week later (Feb. 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #7 with a 5.24/244.89. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.23/274.97 beat Whit Bazemore's 5.41/258. But in round two, he lost to the eventual winner Cruz Pedregon. He had the only Mustang-bodied car to qualify at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where a 5.24/277.09 got him the #7 spot in the show. Unfortunately, the car's fuel system problems and Gary could not show for his first-round race against Jack Wyatt. Clapshaw would probably rather forget the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. He ended up as the first alternate with a 5.62/251.04 best. He also failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He did not run at Rockingham for the Winston Invitational event, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #4 with a 5.21/289.85. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.46/228.31 beat Dean Skuza's 5.54/279. A second-round 5.20/269.46 defeated Whit Bazemore's 5.36/272. But in the semifinals, he faced John Force, and he smoked the tires to a 14.27/75.01 loss. Then came the highlight of his season. He went to Memphis early in May for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.29/289.38 qualified in the middle of the field (#8). He and Kenji Okazaki had a great race in round one, that saw both drivers run 5.37 (Clapshaw at 278.72), with Gary getting the win light. The run came at a price as he blackened a crankshaft and the crew installed another for round two. There, his 5.53 stopped Jim Blake. He picked up the pace in the semifinal with a 5.31/251.11 to beat Al Hofmann. This put him in the final against Gary Densham. Neither had won an NHRA national event, so it was bound to be a first-time winner. As luck would have it, Clapshaw's 5.33/285.99 gave him the win over Densham's 5.45/276. Best NHRA national event times were 5.07 at Ennis and 295 at the World Finals.

Notes: Confirmed 6.90 Portland, Well, this one is sorta rare. Mike is a nice guy, who had a dream. He wanted a funny car - not unlike others' dreams I s'pose. So, he built a BB/FC Vega and ran it for awhile, with Skipper's sponsorship. He suggested better "bang for their bucks" and this is what evolved. The chassis is from the former Pisano, former Green Elephant (Long Vega) rebodied and tinned as this Mustang with some Ford dealership help (they also provided a ramptruck which got a glass-sided body). It ran OK, but bucks-down Mike Cyr overspent the sponsor's $$ and was forced to park it. About that time, Jerry Ruth lost his similar Mach I in a horrific accident, leased this one and plugged Frank Hall in it to complete 1973. The car then sat for awhile before being sold to Gary Rogers who ran it sporadically in 1975. I lost track of the chassis, but the body then went to "Scotty" Knox who had Art Morrison build a suspended econo chassis for it and it received a 351 Cleveland for bracket racing. It evolved all the way back to blown alcohol for the Olympia, Washington racer. I've lost track of the body now because Knox moved on to newer bodies for his entries-Phil Elliot.

Notes: Pulde started the '85 season with the Firebird. At Pomona for the Winternationals, Dale qualified #7 with a 5.83/251.67. A first-round 5.84 beat Billy Meyer and a second round 5.74/252 beat John Force's 5.76/258. He had a little luck in the semifinals when he broke, but his opponent Ed McCulloch fouled and Pulde found himself in the final. He ran Al Segrini for the title, but his 6.02/233.52 finished runner-up to Al's 5.78/227. | At Baylands 2/85 4 Car Funny Car Show, Pulde ran 6.23/211 against Sherm Gunn in Round 1, 5.77/245 against Mike Dunn in Round 2 & ran low ET & Top Speed 5.714/250 to win the event over Don Prudhomme. | At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Dale lasted until the semifinals where he lost to McCulloch due to crossing the centerline. Crewchief Mike Hamby argued hard with IHRA officials saying that the car didn't cross the centerline, but the decision held. At the Gatornationals, a 5.72/244.69 qualified #6. Pulde beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.87/243.63. In round two, a 5.91/252 advanced when McCulloch lost a blower. But in the semifinals, Dale lost to John Lombardo's 5.76/255 in the "Blue Max." At the next NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, a 5.93/246.71 qualified in the dreaded #9 spot. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in which Pulde smoked the tires and lost. The "old" Firebird proved it could still win by winning the IHRA Pro Am Championships at Rockingham in May. Dale beat Billy Meyer in the final even though they both ran 5.80's. Pulde's was at 254. The last race the Firebird was used at was the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. Once again the old car proved itself by qualifying #1 with a 5.74 (Low ET) at 251.81. Unfortunately, Dale smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Don Prudhomme. At the next event, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, they literally finished the new Buick Somerset in the pits for the race. They went on to qualify first and win the race.

Notes: This run took place at Ennis Fall. Did Cruz own and run his own car for the remainder of the season sometime after Englishtown?

Notes: Gary surprised a lot of people at the AHRA Winternationals when he ran 6.24 to qualify #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.23. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round, and shut off, losing to Henry Harrison. On May 5, Gary was at Firebird International for the Coors 32-car Funny Car race. He ran a career best 6.08. Gary made the final, but finished runner-up to John Force. He bettered his previous best on May 13 at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. There he qualified #6 with his best ever (to this point) 5.99 in the eight-car show. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore
