Notes: The unique spoiler was later outlawed. Meyer ran this body in the last half of '87. Qualified #9 at 5.521 and ran 262.54 in a first-round loss at the same race. The car began the year blue & white. | At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Meyer ran 5.60/251.81 to qualify #6. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 8.62/90.18 loss to John Martin. He had a rough outing at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He had a supercharger explode in qualifying, and he wrecked the Firenza body. His 5.73/255.73 qualified #10. Billy put on his backup body, a Tempo, for eliminations. In the first round, he lost another blower and the race to Ed McCulloch. On April 5, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race. It was an eight-car field, and Meyer's 5.64/256.48 qualified on the "bump." McCulloch broke against him in the first round, and Billy advanced with a 5.60/260.56. A 5.61 at only 188.20 in the semifinals lost to Tom McEwen's 5.45/262 in the "Blue Max."Meyer had more bad luck at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified well with his 5.76/255.75 getting him the #6 spot, and his 5.71/254.59 easily beat Raymond Beadle's 6.21/215 in the "Blue Max" in round one. But in the second round, he blew another supercharger, and the force of the explosion blew the body off the car. He lost to John Force. Baton Rouge was more or less a normal event for Meyer. He qualified #10 at 5.98/236.03. Qualifying wasn't much of an issue as only sixteen cars showed. But he was late against Force in the opening round, and his 5.67/241.93 lost to Force's 5.74/252. He won his 11th NHRA career victory and his first since the '84 Grandnationals when he won the Springnationals at Columbus in June. He qualified #7 with a 5.79/241.28. He had a bit of luck on his side when in the first round, he had a rod break on his 6.94/66.38. But his opponent, Rod Dudley, crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the second round, his 5.86/250.27 defeated McCulloch's late5.81/253. Don Prudhomme smoked the tires against him in the semifinal and shut down to 7.05/152 while Meyer advanced with a 5.81/249.58. He ran Jim Head in the final, and this was Meyer's race as he could do no wrong; his 5.84/251.95 got the victory over Head's troubled 7.07/132. RH |

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Chadwick is well-known in two different fields. In Texas, as a girls’ basketball coach and nationwide as a premier drag racer. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful 1969 Camaro was his third funny car and his first with a flip top and tube chassis. Chadwick had raced the "Wild Thing" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mainly in the Southwest. The Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) - BS | Did he run 7.22/209 in 69/70? | Kelly Chadwick had Don Hardy built him a new Camaro for '69. The car used a 427 Chevy. Mondello did the heads, and Don Hardy prepared the blower. A Hilborn four-port injector unit fed the 60% nitro mixture. Howards supplied the cam. A TorqueFlite transmission transferred the power back to a Pontiac rear with 3.90 gears. | Chadwick started the season by qualifying eleventh with an 8.298/187.89 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Clare Sanders' 8.09 beat his 8.53/161.57 in the first round. On April 27 at Amarillo, Texas, he won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race beating Fred Goeske in the final with track records of 7.82/192.70. Kelly beat Jack Chrisman with an 8.18 in the first round, and he the semifinal, he fouled against Norm Weekly, but Mr. Norm's Charger had engine trouble and couldn't repair for the final, so Chadwick was reinstated. In May, he was at Capitol for the "Mr. Chevrolet" Invitational. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.68/193.96, but in the second round, the Camaro got sideways while racing Malcolm Durham, and he shut down to an 8.96/179.64 loss. Epping held a Cavalcade race on June 15. Kelly lost his first race to Gary Dyer's 7.76/186. He did win his second race with a 7.71/188.28 over a fouling Jess Tyree (7.90/177). In the final, Dyer ran a track-record 7.55 over Kelly's 7.97/164.50 runner-up effort. Later in June, he did win at the Maple Grove Cavalcade race, where he beat Dyer in the final for the win. On July 3, Chadwick picked up another Coca-Cola Cavalcade win at US 30, Gary, Indiana. It was his third Cavalcade win in a row. He beat Ken Safford in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.68/196, and in the second round, he beat Jess Tyree's Firebird with a 7.71/199. In the final, he beat Marv Eldridge's 7.98/188 with a 7.66/200. Another Coca-Cola Cavalcade race was run at National Trail on August 17, where Chadwick broke a driveshaft in his first race and watched Dick Bourgeois single to an 8.17 win. In his second race, against Marv Eldridge, he won with a 7.79 when Marv broke. In his third race, an 8.78 beat Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 9.40. Dyer won the race in the Mr. Norm car. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 7.543/195.22 qualified Chadwick sixteenth. But in the first round, he stepped it up to a 7.383/196.93 to beat Bobby Wood’s 7.55/199. In round two, Danny Ongais' 7.38 put him on the trailer. On September 20 at Dallas International, he competed in an eight-car show. A first-round 7.52 beat Fritz Callier's 7.69. But a 7.29/204 from Gene Snow in the semifinal dropped his 7.48/194.38. Another win came his way on October 18 at Lions for its Cavalcade race. He ran a 7.53/177.86 over Tyree in the first round, and a second-round 7.47/190.67 beat Eldridge's 7.76/181. In the final, Bob Smith in the Invader fouled away a Low ET of the meet 7.26/193.13, letting Chadwick cruise to an 8.06/138.46 win. At the Lions fifth annual East/West Championships on October 25, he lost to Jim Liberman's 8.06/175 in the first round, with an ailing 10.00. He competed at the Sears Point North/South Championships on November 2 but lost to Lew Arrington's 7.89/194 before the finals. He managed to qualify third for the GM team with a 7.71 for the OCIR Manufacturer's meet on November 7. The following day, a much better 7.47/196.06 beat Rusty Delling's 7.63/191 in his first race. A series of wheelstands did in any chance of winning against Larry Reyes' 7.40/202 in his second race. And a 7.85 in his third race beat a quicker Tony Weathers' 7.75. A Coke circuit ad cited best times of 7.51/195.83 at the time. - Ron Howard |

Notes: John attempted to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.59 was good for the fourth alternate. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified #12 for the twelve-car field with a 6.73/211.16. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.63/191.08 beat Jim Dunn's tire-smoking 7.11/199. Ed McCulloch broke on the line in the second round, and Lombardo advanced with a 7.60/151.51. He faced Don Prudhomme in the semifinals but had problems and shut down to a 10.78. The "Snake" also had a rough time, but his 7.91 got him into the final. Shortly after that, John was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West race. He had problems in round one, against Dale Pulde and shut down to 11.39. But Dale also had trouble, he got the "win" light, but he lost an engine on the run and could not make it back for round two. Lombardo was reinstated, but he lost to Gary Densham. Photo from the 1975 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: Smith debuted his new Monza at the NHRA Gatornationals. On his first qualifying attempt, he ran 6.70. Paul improved to 6.422/208.33 to qualify #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.39/205. He lost a close one in the opening round, where his 6.525/206.42 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.51/200. Paul was at Warner Robins in April for the NHRA Division Two Opener. He qualified #2 behind Shirl Greer, and these two made their way into the final. The two had a great race that saw Greer run 6.40/219 to win over Smith's hard-charging 6.41/229.00 (Top Speed). Not long after this, he was at Englishtown for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, Smith smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Pee Wee Wallace. Smith came back out later for a consolation race against Dodger Glenn, driving the "Frantic Ford." Paul ran 6.93/193.96 to beat Glenn's 7.57/188. Paul qualified #15 at Columbus at 6.623/199.11. In round one, he lost to teammate and Division 2 nemesis Greer, 6.469/205.94 to 7.349/118.57. Paul got into the top half of the field at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.450/209.79 that qualified #8. He beat a broken Ron Jackson in round one, (12-second shutoff) but crossed the centerline against eventual winner Jim Liberman in round two. The team qualified #7 at NHRA Sanair with a 6/63/218.97, but Paul lost a close one to Bob Pickett in the first round, 6.51/207.37 to 6.61 216.86. The team qualified well at Indy, claiming the #6 spot at 6.292/226.13. Paul lost another close one in round one, however, this time to Dale Pulde, 6.340/211.26 to 6.401/210.28. The team's next and final NHRA national event was the World Finals, where Paul was the fourth alternate at 6.439/217.90. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Notes: Confirmed 6.38/225 at Seattle 7/75. | Ruth started the '75 season at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round, with a 6.48/208.81 and a 6.41 beat Sush Matsubara in round two. In the finals, he ran Don Prudhomme. Jerry had troubles and shut off to a 16.33 loss to Prudhomme's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.39/215.31. Ruth had some problems at the NHRA Winternationals. His tow rig's air conditioner failed and Ruth attempted to fix it. His hand got stuck in the belt and he required 12 stitches. Jerry had to rehire former driver Frank Hall to drive his Mustang at Pomona. Unfortunately, Frank's best of 6.50 failed to make the show. In April, Ruth was at Seattle for its opening race of the season. It was an eight-car show with all cars making two runs and the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ruth’s 6.88/214.99 in his first race lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.56/220, but a 6.62/221.13 beat Rich Rogers' 7.55 in his second race. The third race had Twig Zeigler pull a holeshot and hang on with a 6.88/206 beating Jerry's quicker 6.79/221.67. His ETs were not quick enough to advance him into the final. Shortly after that, he was at Portland for its Grand Premiere race. It was run in the same format as Seattle. An opening round 6.47/221.67 beat Johnny White in the "Oly Smoker" and in his second race he ran a strong 6.46/228.21 (Top Speed), but it wasn't enough to beat Ed McCulloch who set a track record 6.22 in beating him. In his third race, he smoked the tires and lost to Bonin. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the fifth annual Ignitor Funny Car Championships. Ruth set Top Speed at 222.14 on his way to reaching a final round showdown with McCulloch. In the final, both ran 6.82 (Ruth at 219.96), but the "Ace" got the victory. |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. Confirmed 6.57/226.70 at IHRA Bristol in June 1975. Kenny was at Byron in mid-June for the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships. In his first race, he lost when he crossed the centerline against Larry Fullerton, but in his second race, he beat Shirl Greer with a 6.73/212.26. The following weekend (June 22), found the "Mr. Norm" car at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Safford qualified #9 in the sixteen-car field, forcing him to run low qualifier Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round one. The two had a good race, but Beadle's 6.43 got the win light over Kenny's 6.57. |

Notes: Jim brought out this second car (sister to the Black Magic Vega), but it only ran in 1975. Wallace was at Englishtown in April for its Spring Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.91/207.85 beat Paul Smith. He improved to 6.75/213.77 in a semifinal win over Tommy Grove. In the final, he faced Grove again as Tom Prock had exploded a supercharger while winning and could not run the final. Once again, Wallace was able to beat Grove. This time his victory came with a 6.56 (Low ET) at 214.28. In May, he was at Maple Grove for the Dutch Classic race. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified in the first round, while racing eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Shortly after that, he was at Cayuga for the second NHRA Division 1 race. He set Top Speed during qualifying at 214.28, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 6.98/207.37 beat Stephen Bernd. In the semifinals, a 7.02/207.37 beat a wheelstanding Jim Wemett. His final-round opponent was Ira Hollensbe. Pee Wee got the title with a 7.01/206.89 beating Ira's 7.46/175. His next stop was at Napierville for another eight-car show. He lost early there. At Atco, for the Cars Magazine Championships, Wallace's off-pace 7.38/192.71 lost to Liberman's 6.91/225 in the first round. Another first-round loss came at Englishtown's Memorial Day Classic. There, eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.47/205 stopped his 6.83/217.39. The first-round losses continued at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals in the first week of June. He qualified #13 with a 6.57/223.32, but he smoked the tires to a 7.30 and lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.63. At the Division 1 race at Maple Grove, he ran 6.63 to qualify #3. This time, he made it past the first-round only to lose to Don Prudhomme's 6.59/204 with a 6.63/212 in the semifinals. He was back at Cayuga in July for its Gold Cup Championships race. There were thirteen FCs there, and all ran three races, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Wallace soloed with a 7.30 on his first run. In his next race, he lost to Larry Fullerton, and in his third race, his quicker 6.97/196.07 lost to Joe Jacono's 7.08/209. His times were not quick enough to advance into the final. At the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships, Wallace's tire-smoking 8.57/191.48 lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.39/194 in the opening round. While he didn't win or even make the final, Wallace set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.59 at Maryland International for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. That was pretty impressive, considering eventual winner Don Prudhomme could not match or beat his time. | Later sold to Willie Borsch. - Joe Moore |

Notes: This Corvair would have been Ralph Nader's worst nightmare if he had seen it. Michigander Pete Seaton was one of the first match bash funny car racers. The "Seaton's Super Shaker" '67 Corvair was, in fact, his fourth funny car. The new Chevy was built by the Logghe Bros. At their Logghe Stamping Company. A 427 Chevrolet Semi-Hemi powered the car and was backed by a Torqueflite transmission. Terry Hedrick was chosen to drive the wild Corvair. Hedrick's seat of the pants driving style was awe-inspiring to the funny car fans of the sixties. The Corvair garnered many wins while touring the country in 1967 and 1968. Terry won one day and was runner-up the next at the 1967 AHRA Drag World Super Stock Championships at Wichita, Kansas. Was this Corvair unsafe at any speed? Nah. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday, Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki). - BS | He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day Meet where he qualified #1 with an 8.01. A first-round 8.03 advanced him past a fouling Marv Eldridge. He made it past the next two rounds to meet Don Nicholson in the final. An 8.04 by Nicholson put Terry in the runner-up spot. On January 14 for OCIR's eight-car show, Hedrick qualified third with an 8.24/170.77. A first-round 8.28/182.18 beat Dick Loehr's 8.43/168. But in the semi's he was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. On February 25 he raced a best two-out-of-three at OCIR against Nicholson. Don's 8.03/166 and 7.97/172 beat Terry's 8.39/176.12 and 8.36/178.21. He did win the last race with an 8.29/178.57 over Nicholson's shut-off 13.21, but Don won the match. The two met again on April 6 for another best of three match at New York. This time Terry evened the score by winning the match. He won the first race with an 8.00/184.04 over Don's off the track 11.58. Nicholson came back to win the second race with a 7.79/166 over Hedrick's 8.04/182.18. But in the final race, the Corvair set both ends of the track record with a 7.75/185.18 to beat Don and win the match. The next day (April 7), he was at Detroit's Anchorville Motor City Dragway to race Sid Foster's Mustang in a best of three match. Once again Terry set a track record, this time it was an 8.09 at 178. He beat Foster three straight. Nicholson wanted another shot at Hedrick and he got it on May 5 for a best of three at Detroit. Don was now running his new Cougar. Hedrick won the first race with an 8.08/177.51 over "Dyno's" 8.36/164. Nicholson came back to win the second race with an 8.15/171 over the Corvair's 8.16/175.43. But Terry came through to win the match with an 8.09/177.86 to beat Don's shut off run. On May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships he failed to win, but he did set Low ET at 7.80. At Pittsburgh in May, Terry set both ends of the track record with a 7.84/180.36 while winning the Pittsburgh Funny Car Championships over Jim Liberman. A final round 7.92 beat Jim's quicker 7.88. On June 28, Terry was back at Detroit Dragway for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show. Hedrick beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" in the first round, with an 8.29/173.07. In round two, a 7.83/179.64 beat Leonard Hughes' 7.94/182. But in the semifinals, against Roger Lindamood, he got out of shape and went into a ditch along side the top end of the track. It damaged the front end pretty good, but Terry was not hurt. Don Gay met up with Terry on August 4 at LaPlace for a best of three match. Terry took the match two straight with runs of 8.02/182.92 and 7.99/178.82. Hedrick got his biggest win of the year on August 18 at New York National for the AHRA Nationals. He ran times of 7.60 (Low ET), 7.63, 7.67 and a final round 7.68 over Dick Harrell for the title. At Minneapolis on September 1, a first-round 7.89/180.36 was wasted when he fouled against Pat Minick (9.00) in the first round. Another match race against Nicholson was run at New York with the "Seaton Shaker" winning the match with a best of 7.75. He lost in the first round, again at Suffolk for an eight-car show when he got crossed up against Mel Perry. On September 29, he was at Windsor Dragway for a best of three against Lindamood. Terry won all three races with runs of 7.79/181.80, 7.77/184.04 and a final 7.93/179.64. On October 6, he won the AHRA World Finals at Kansas City International. Lakeland International held their Fuel Funny Car Championships on October 20 and Hedrick was there. He won his first-round race with an 8.39/179.64 over Terry Ivey's new Torino, but in the second round, he lost a torque converter and the race to Henry Garcia. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Fiberglass Trends body & paint. This car was run in 1969. The 1970 version was all red and didn't carry the Javelin 2 name. Ran a confirmed 7.77 at US 30. On March 2, Dick won over a sixteen-car field at Irwindale. He qualified with an 8.12/181.08 and an 8.10/182.18 beat Marv Eldridge in round one. In round two, he picked up to 7.91/184.04 to advance. In the semifinals, he dropped Steve Bovan with a 7.99/184.04. This put him into the final against Roger Wolford. The Javelin took the win. Dick raced Don Schumacher at Aquasco for a best two out of three match race on April 13. Dick fouled away an 8.17/182.18 in the first race but returned with a 7.99/181.44 to beat Don's 8.19/185 in the second race. In the tiebreaker, the Javelin broke, and Don singled to a 7.95/188 for the match race win. At the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Amarillo on April 27, Bourgeois' 8.36 beat Jess Tyree, who lost a transmission. Fred Goeske ran the track's first seven (7.91) in the second race, and Dick was in the other lane at the time and lost. At another Cavalcade race on June 15 at Epping, a holeshot 8.21/187 beat Tyree's quicker 8.08/176. In his second race, a 7.73/179 beat Goeske's 8.56/175. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in his third race and lost to Ken Safford. National Trail held a Cavalcade race on August 17. Bourgeois' singled with an 8.17 in the first race when Kelly Chadwick broke a driveshaft. In the second race, a 7.75/189.46 beat an ailing, Stone-Woods-Cooke Mustang driven by Ken Safford at 8.93. In the third race, Gary Dyer's 7.83/194 beat his fouling 8.16/186.32. Dick ran a 7.47/196.93 to qualify ninth at the US Nationals on September 8. He improved to a 7.45 in the first round, but that was no match for Leonard Hughes' 7.28. On September 14, he raced a four-car round-robin race at National Trail. In his first race, Jim Liberman's holeshot 7.89/186 beat his quicker 7.85/189.86. He shut off on the line with no oil pressure for his second race and a 7.63/191.88 lost to Gary Dyer's 7.46/195 in the third race. He raced at the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lions on October 18, but he had engine problems and lost fire in the first round. At the Fremont Fallnationals the next day (October 19), he qualified #1 with Low ET of the meet, a 7.48. A first-round 7.89/191.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.68/193 in the first round. On November 1, he qualified #1 again at an eight-car show at Irwindale. A 7.53/193.54 gave him the top spot. In the first round, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.49/191.48 over Frank Pisano's 7.89/179.28. He lucked out in the semifinal when his Javelin lost fire on the line against Ed Lenarth. Lenarth did his burnout, and his left rear wheel came out of the car, causing him to swerve and hit the guardrail. While all this was going on, Dick refired and ran a 7.98/172.92 to advance to the final. In the final, he met another Javelin, that of Rusty Delling. Dick went on to run a 7.97/192.30 for the victory over Delling's 8.09/185. He qualified fifth (7.65) for the Wacky Funny Car team at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet. |

Notes: Marv's Corvette used a 392 Hemi running on 80% nitro. It used M/T rods and Venolia pistons. Howards supplied the cam. A Don Hampton prepared blower sat on a Cragar manifold, and a Scott injection unit sat up on top. A Cragar blower drive was also used. C&O prepared the Torqueflite transmission, and the power was fed back to a Mopar rear with 3.73 gears. Eldridge started the season at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. Unfortunately, he was one of 24 cars that failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Marv qualified ninth at Pomona's tricky surface with an 8.27/185.95 for the NHRA Winternationals. By qualifying ninth, it meant he had to race the number one qualifier, and the only car that ran a seven in qualifying, Tom McEwen, in the first round. But a smoking 8.60 defeated the 8.96 of McEwen. He ran an 8.25/183.67 in the second round that lost to Leonard Hughes 7.86. On March 9 at the Sears Point National Open, he finished runner-up to Danny Ongais. National Trail hosted a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race on August 17. He lost to Jack Chrisman's 8.20 in the first race with an 8.26. In the second race, he broke, allowing Kelly Chadwick a 7.79 single. A 7.54/189.07 qualified #15 at the US Nationals, but his transmission let go against Connie Kalitta in the first round. Lions held an eight-car show on October 4, and Eldridge ran a first-round 7.59/187.89 over Steve Bovan's 7.74/190. The Corvette got too close to the guardrail in the semifinal and kissed it, losing to Mike Van Sant. At the OCIR Funny Car Open on October 11, Marv beat Randy Walls in the first round, with a 7.62. Both he and Frank Pisano broke in the semifinals, but the Corvette out-coasted Pisano for the win. In the final, he was paired against Walls again, and again he beat him; this time, a 7.56/187.50 won the race. On October 18, he raced at Lions for a Cavalcade race. He ran a 7.84/180.72 over Jack Chrisman, who lifted a blower in the first round. A 7.76/181.08 in the second round fell to Kelly Chadwick's 7.47/190. Coke circuit ad from 1969 cited best times of 7.59/195.89. |

Notes: Ran 7.47 at Rockingham. | On March 16, Fritz raced at an eight-car show at Green Valley Raceway. He won his first-round race with an 8.32 over Bob Manion's 8.61. In the semifinal, a 7.98/180 beat Gene Snow's ailing Charger. In the final, Henry Garcia's 8.12/181 beat his 8.47/178.21. In mid-April, he was at Indianapolis, where four FCs were running. A 7.75/184 beat Terry Ivey in his first race while in his second race, a 7.82/182 lost to Pat Minick's 7.66/194 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He ran his best of the day in his last race, a 7.74/185 over Paul Stefansky. On April 26, Callier won an Funny Car meet at Houston, setting a 7.86 track record. Late in May, he was at Gary, Indiana's, US 30 for the Drag News Invitationals. A first-round 8.11/198 beat Arnie Beswick, while in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.66/204 to beat Don Schumacher's close 7.67/200. He was to face Minick in the final, but it rained, and the final never came off. Fritz had an interesting day on June 8 at the AHRA Springnationals. He ran well and was on his way to the finals, but things didn't work out. He started by winning his first-round race with a 9.96 when Shirl Greer fouled against him. In the second round, the impossible happened, Danny Ongais fouled away a 7.61, and Fritz won with a 7.89. In the semifinal, Callier was to face Dick Harrell, but Dick lost fire, and the backup car of Mickey Thompson/Danny Ongais was fired up to replace Harrell. Unfortunately, the starter failed to notice Ongais fire up and sent Callier on a single. During the mix-up, Harrell refired, and he and Ongais raced down the track. Thompson, quite heated, demanded a rerun between the cars, and Fritz agreed. On the rerun, Danny's 7.76 beat the Camaro's 7.93. During this time, Callier's car was known as the car to beat in Houston. He ran against Co-Go Eads' Mustang there in a best of three match race in June. Eads actually beat Fritz in the first race with an 8.12/176 win over the Camaro's 8.41/175, but Fritz came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 8.13/178 and a solo when the Mustang broke a blower drive, 8.08/180. On August 24 at the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley, a first-round 7.82 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.65. At Bristol for the AHRA All-American Championships, they held a race on September 6 during qualifying; their actual race was to be held the next day. But on the 6, Fritz ran 7.64/187.50 and 7.99 in the first two rounds before meeting Terry Hedrick in the semifinal. A 7.75 beat Terry's quicker 7.72. In the final, he had to shut off with no oil pressure giving Ronnie Runyan the win. The next day, for the real race, a 7.70 beat Tony Wahlay in the first round, but Wahlay got back in on the break rule and met Fritz again in round two. Once again, Fritz beat the 'Cuda, this time with a 7.73. Unfortunately, the Camaro broke and was unable to make the semifinal, reinstating Mike Burkhart. He competed at an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20, but a first-round 7.69 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.52. At Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19, he ran a first-round 7.79 over Bob Manion, but a 7.68 by Gene Snow in the second round beat him. He met Snow at Houston for a best of three match. Fritz lost the first two races and the match when he smoked the tires to an 8.25 loss to Gene's 7.88, and in the second race, he fouled away a 7.94. He did win the final race with a 7.97, beating Snow's 8.20. |

Notes: Car was destroyed at IHRA Dragway 42 on August 20, 1972, putting Muldowney in hospital with burns. The incident was not depicted accurately in the movie Heart Like A Wheel. Shirley ran 6.70 in Connecticut, 6.82/205.90 at Epping, NH. Muldowney failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. She was not alone as many good cars failed to make the field, including Richard Tharp, Larry Fullerton, the "Ramchargers" and "Pisano and Mastsubara."On Feb.26, she had one of six cars competing at Orlando. Muldowney did well, finishing runner-up to Mart Higginbotham. On March 12, Shirley lost a best of three match race to Gary Bolger at Edgewater. Her 7.0's-207 lost to the "Golddigger's" 6.9's-210. The following week(March 19), she failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Shortly after that, she was back at Edgewater for a best of three match race against Frank Huff, driving the "Super Vega."Shirley won all three of their races, running a best of 6.94/200.44. Unfortunately, at her next match race, held at Kilkare Dragway on March 25, she lost all three of her races against Larry Arnold, driving the "Kingfish."On April 30, her 6.8's at 210 beat Dick Bourgeois in the "Doug's Headers" Vega two straight. In May, Muldowney was one of four FC's that competed at Tri-City. In her first race, she ran 6.90/208 to beat Connie Kalitta's 7.23/172. An off-pace 8.55 lost to Jim Paoli's 6.76 in her second race, and the car died on the line in her last race, giving Butch Maas a single. A Monday night show was run at Toronto on May 22, and she was runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Shirley ran well on May 26 at Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics. She ran 6.76 twice, with a best speed of 213 to reach the final against Bobby Rowe. There was no stopping Rowe this day as he won with an easy 6.68/193. She was back at Union Grove the next day, where she lasted until the semifinals before her 6.72/202 lost to eventual winner Al Marshall's 6.66/210. She was at Milan Dragway in June for the NHRA Division Three race. In the opening round, her 7.35 beat Ed O'Brien, but in the semifinals, a 6.87/205 lost to Maas' 6.80/208. Shirley was at Atco on July 12 for its Funny Car Championships. Although she had lost to Leroy Chadderton in the first round, she came back out for a consolation race against Charlie Therwhanger. She won their race with a 6.93/225.00. It was a career-best speed for her(up to this point). She was back in Toronto on August 6 for a fourteen-car show. This time Muldowney won, stopping Don Schumacher and Arnold along the way. |

Notes: Jerry's early NHRA event record: 6.100/236.46 DNQ-3 at Gainesville; 6.004/244.10 Q11 at Columbus, R1 loss to John Force, 5.80/248 to 6.271/233.46; 5.900/241.02 Q14 at Englishtown, R1 loss to Johnny West, 5.82/250 to 5.916/241.54. Jerry qualified #12 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 5.864/256.04. In the first round, he could not appear, and Scott Kalitta took his place against Mark Oswald. At the NHRA Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, a 5.915/245.70 qualified #14. Another 5.915 at 235.66 in the first round, lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.80/246. The following week (September 21), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. Caminito qualified #7 in the eight-car show, but in round one, he picked up to a 5.79/238 to beat Doc Halladay. In the semifinals, he lost to Dominic Santucci. On September 28, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.853/248.96 was good for the second alternate. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. Listed times from the December 86/Jan 87 Drag Racing List. Photo from Indy 1986. | ET was probably an east coast match race; it was '86, though. - Curt Swartz |

Notes: The race car was a gutted '66 Mustang steel shell with a Cal Auto glass front end, doors and deck lid, and Tom Hanna tin. 120" exhibition Engineering chrome-moly tube frame, 448" early hemi (392 with a half-inch CT stroker), B&M TorqueFlite trans, 2050 lbs. The car was destroyed in a crash at Alton, Illinois, in September 1967, seriously injuring longtime S-W-C shoe Cook and causing his retirement from racing. Seven-page feature in Drag Strip 4/67, including the full-page color plate. 5-page feature in Car Craft 3/67, including color plate and cutaway illustration. Doug ran an 8.19 track record at York US 30. | Doug qualified second with an 8.54/167.81 at the Irwindale New Year's Funny Car race. He lost in the first round. He was at Lions shortly after that (January 8) to make some test passes. The car went 8.48 and 8.98 on its first two passes before Cooke drove it to a final 8.50/166.97 and called it a day. At the Bakersfield Meet on February 19, the Stone, Woods & Cook team ran in the 2400 lb. fuel Funny Car class and won with a final round 8.58/159 over Al Vanderwoude. He raced "Jungle Jim" Liberman on March 5 for a best of three match race at Beeline, but Doug lost two straight. On March 11, he was in Texas for a best of three match against Arnie Beswick at San Antonio. Doug beat Arnie two straight. The next day, the same two squared off again at Green Valley. Cook, once again, won two straight, running a best of 8.64/168 over the Pontiac. Another match race win came at Alton on March 19, where he took on Gary Dyer driving the "Mr. Norm" Charger. It was a good match, with Doug winning the first race with an 8.51/157.61 over Dyer's 8.72/164. The Mustang got a little crossed up in the second race, and a quicker 8.82 couldn't catch the Charger's 8.87. Cook really laid one down in the final, running an 8.32 to win the match. The Mustang was towed into Lakeland on April 2 with a blown engine from the night before. Cook was there for a best of three match against Joe Lunati. Larry Reyes filled in for the first race with the "Kingfish." After that, Doug and his crew had the Mustang up for the second race. Doug then won the match two straight with runs of 8.69/165.13 and 8.74/164.83. The following week, he was at York US 30 for another match against Malcolm Durham. Doug won three straight, turning a career-best 8.19 at 169.17 in the first race. Times of 8.22/169.17 and 8.23/169.48 wrapped up the match. Doug ran a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay's GTO at Englishtown on April 30. It didn't start so well when just before the first race, the rear end let go on the Mustang, and Gay soloed for the win. After fixing the car, Doug came back to win the next race with an 8.40/165.44 when Don fouled. Cook also won the final and deciding race with an 8.35/166.66 beating the GTO's 8.64/160. In July, he won the Supercharged Invitational held at Capitol Raceway. He stopped Dyer in the final. On July 22, he was at Motor City Dragway for a four-car show. The Mustang broke on the line against Bob Sullivan in the first round. But in the second round, Doug beat Arnie Beswick with an 8.50/165.74. He improved on that time in his third race, where he beat Paula Murphy with an 8.43. Shortly after that, he was at Alton for a best of three match against Jim Thornton driving the "Ramchargers" Dart. The Dodge won the first race with an 8.38/171 that beat Cook's slightly quicker 8.36/166.66. In the second race, Doug was ready, and when the light went green, he got a holeshot on Jim, and his 8.37/167.59 beat Thornton's 8.95/168. Doug saved his best for last by running 8.29 in the final race to win the match. Shortly after that, he won the AHRA Summernationals at New York with a 7.99/176.05 in the final. In the middle of August, he was at York for a best of three match against Eddie Schartman. Cook won two straight. This was big as the factory Comets were still considered the cars to beat. In their first race, Schartman got out of shape and shut off while Doug ran 8.29 for the win. In the second race, he ran 8.07 to beat the Comet's 8.60 by more than half a second. The Mustang broke after that, and Ed saved face with an 8.36 solo run. Shortly after that (August 18), Doug was at 75/80 for a match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. Doug's 8.73/165.13 won their first race, but Jim came back to win the second with an engine blowing 8.58/161 that won when Cook fouled. Doug then made a solo for the match race victory, but what a solo it was as he reset both ends of the track record with an 8.27/170.13. In September, a crash at Alton was attributed to the addition of a new rear decklid spoiler. The car had been running strong, and Cook wanted to try a rear spoiler on the car to see what it would do. He wanted the car to stay glued to the track harder and thought it would help. Tim Woods tried to talk Doug out of using the spoiler and even had Gene Adams talk to Doug and suggest another way of keeping the car planted. Adams thought that a lower rear gear might help. Doug felt that this would cause the engine to rev too high and blow. So, the rear spoiler stayed on the car. Just four days before his serious accident, he ran it into a cornfield as his 'chute failed to open due to the spoiler. At the top end of the track, he carried the front wheels six inches in the air, giving him no steering control until he popped the 'chute. He crashed hard in the lights after running 179 mph at Alton. The car was a total loss, and he had extensive injuries. That ended his driving career. |

Notes: This was the orange and black Beretta (former Jam-Air Plueger car) we purchased from John Martin. First car with the Chicago Trapper name before the pretty black car. Ran car all year in 90 starting at Bristol. Ran part of 91 until we burned the body off of it at Houston. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. |

Notes: Rear engine blown fuel. This car was run by McEwen in 1965 and into '66. He had crashed an earlier one in 1965. McEwen set Top Speed at the 1966 Winternationals at 170.45. He then sold the car to Fred Goeske. McEwen drove the car at first for Goeske, before turning driving over to him. Goeske ran this car into 1968 season. | Tom set Low ET and Top Speed at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals on February 13 with a 9.21/178.92 blast.
