Notes: John ran 6.63/187.10 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He qualified #13 at 6.39/217.39 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and lost to John Collins in the first round. On April 9, John was at Irwindale testing his new Milodon engine he had just installed in his three-year-old car the morning of this race. He had no intention of running in competition, but the field was one car short. He ended up winning the race. He ran 6.28 and 6.23 on the way to the final. He ran Eddie Pauling, who had set Low ET with a 5.97 in Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but John's 6.09/216 got him the victory over Eddie's 6.25/208. John was low qualifier at the Cajun Nationals at 6.42/213.27. He fouled and lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. John qualified #6 at Columbus at 6.190/220.58 and won round one at 6.27 over Stan Bowman's 6.37. He lost to Meyer again in round two, 6.30 to 6.37. John won the NHRA Division 7 race on May 5 with a 6.12. (BP was in attendance at that race). Qualified #10 at Indy at 6.202/231.95 but lost to Gary Burgin in round one, 6.02 to 6.59. Qualified #8 at Seattle at 6.38/216.86 and improved to a 6.30/211 win over Gary Saindon in round one. But Gary Cochran beat John in round two. Qualified #10 at the World Finals at 6.22/228.42 but could not start in round one, and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.06. John did win the OCIR Funny Car 500 in May (Bill was there). And he won the 64 car event in Irwindale with a 6.09. | At the '77 64 FCs at SIR, Lombardo did some dry hops in front of the spectator side stands. - Joe Moore

Notes: Rick drove the car a couple of times, ran its best 1986 times. | Rick was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event where he had Pat Galvin turning the wrenches. A best of 5.96/253.52 failed to qualify for the eight-car show. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Rick ran 5.77/255.68 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Kenny Bernstein. Johnson's 5.92/242.58 lost to Kenny's 5.60/246.

Notes: The team first raced together was a booked race at the 1986 D4 Green Valley, TX, where Amberson rode out a wild wheelstand. The team won IHRA Bristol in 1986. Darrell was at Kansas City for the ADRA Summernationals. He failed to reach the finals, but he did run 6.01/251.39 to qualify #6 for the eight-car show. Amberson qualified #13 at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 6.037/242.58. In the opening round, his 5.975/244.56 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.868/254.95. This was the team's only NHRA race in 1986. The following week (August 24), he was at Cordova for the 33rd annual World Series. The race was run "Chicago Style," with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In the first round, he broke against Johnny West, who was driving the "Hawaiian." In the second round, Darrell's 6.26/235.41 lost to Wayne Minick's 6.13/244 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Amberson's ET failed to get him into the final. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1986. The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9, had 5.945/251.39 at Tulsa (first time with dual mags, dual pumps, 14/71 blower) in 1986. Where was the 5.825/255.68 run? Munro thinks it was IHRA Milan. We need to confirm.

Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12/1970. Ran 7.42/175 at OCIR on 4/18/70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race, but there he lost in the first round, to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round, and a 7.50/195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (Low ET) 7.43/172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76/187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round, and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight-car show at Lions on February 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (February 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, a first-round win foretold the final. Gene's 7.33/200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28/181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis, a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27/201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50/194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35/201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37/189.47. OCIR held another eight-car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight-car event, a first-round 7.86/172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81/192.30 beat his 7.92/186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette Funny Car Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (Low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first-round 7.35/197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41/198.23 in the Invader. A semifinal 7.42/175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44/191.08, but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95/141 and 7.86/179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88/185.56 and an 8.13/153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR Funny Car 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42/198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round, on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's Low ET blast of 7.25/199.50 beat his 7.74/195.65. Snively must have had a hex on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round, and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54/188.28). A win came at a sixteen-car field at Irwindale on July 17. He qualified #1 with a 7.67/190.26 (Top Speed) and beat Dave Beebe in the final with Low ET at 7.63. He then won the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 25, beating Ray Alley in the final with a 7.65/181.81. On August 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships, he ran a 7.42/188.28 in the first round, and a 7.73/177.51 in the second before his car caught fire in the semis. Gene was OK. Conway fixed the car and installed a Crowerglide clutch set up with a Lenco two-speed transmission. With this set up, he showed up at OCIR on August 15 for their Anniversary Race. A first-round 7.27/188.28 beat Leroy Hales' 7.84/184. In the second round, a 7.33/194.80 beat Bob McFarland's 7.97/176 and in the semifinal, a 7.70/200 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.84/177. In the final, Gene ran his best ever speed and ET of 7.18/206.89 over Mike Snively's 7.30/203. On August 29 back at OCIR for an eight-car show, Gene ran a first-round 7.03/204.68 and a semifinal 7.10/202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12/205.47. A runner-up finish on September 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44/194.80 and 7.42/197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.26/204.54 to Gene's 7.45/177.51. On September 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42/181.81 beat his 7.61/132.74 in the first round. At the OCIR East-West Championships on October 10, Gene's 7.19/198.67 beat Snively's 7.30/205.01 in the West portion of the race, but for the overall title he lost to Don Schumacher. Conway had run a best of 7.09/201.34 at the race. Gene (7.23/184.80) lost to Dave Beebe (7.09/198.23) in the first round, at the next event on October 24 at Lions, followed by a runner-up finish to John Collins in John Bateman's Maverick at the Pumpkin Day Open at Irwindale. He qualified fifth with a 7.30 and ran a first-round 7.28/208.32 over Larry Arnold. A semifinal 7.37/205.46 beat Charlie Therwhanger, but Collins' 7.23/200.88 beat his 7.44/188.24 in the final. At Irwindale for a 32 car show on November 14, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Arnold's 7.09/208.80 (Top Speed) in the second round. Gene qualified fifth on November 21 at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.28/185.18 to beat a wheelstanding Randy Walls in the first round, before smoking the tires to a losing 15.50-58 in the semis against Bob Pickett who won with an 8.49/131. Gene failed to qualify for Irwindale's Toys for tots race. He had a streak of luck when number eight qualifier Larry Arnold broke and Conway got into the show. He almost went all the way, beating Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 7.29/196.05 and then beating Jim Liberman in the ailing "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with a 7.37/200.44. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don had been running in the sixes on every run and in the final it was no different as the "Snake's" 6.92/192 beat Conway who crossed the centerline. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed at 6.925/218.97. Notes: This is actually the '69 car that Danny had great success with. A '70 grill, new paint, but still a 427 SOHC power plant. Not as much success in 1970. See Barb's comments on the '69 car. Ongais started the '70 season at Irwindale for their New Year's Day race, where he qualified fifth with a 7.55 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 7.58/190.66 beat a crossed-up Marv Eldridge. He ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196.92 over Tom Grove's 7.71/194.38. Danny's motor blew in the semifinal, and the car caught fire on a 7.71/178.92 pass losing to Johnny Wright in another Mickey Thompson Mustang. Danny was OK other than some minor leg burns, and the car had minor damage. On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, he cooked his motor in the first round, while waiting for teammate Arnie Behling in M/T's Maverick to stage. He finally ran and won with a 7.61 over the ailing Maverick. A second-round 7.90 beat a sleepy Gene Snow at 7.66. Unfortunately, Ongais was unable to make the semis, and Snow was reinstated. He qualified second at NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53 but lost in round two. An eight-car show was run at Irwindale on February 15, and a 7.65 qualified Danny second. A first-round 7.68/189.06 beat Mike Miller's out-of-shape Dart. In the semis, a 7.52/195.94 beat Gordon Mineo, and in the final, Ken Safford cracked off a 7.35/197 over Ongais' 7.60/169.81. He suffered a rare first-round loss on February 22 at the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22 when Dave Beebe's 7.41/189 beat his 7.69/193.54. Ongais beat Prudhomme with a 7.25/201 to win the Lions AHRA meet. This was the meet where Don Garlits trans exploded, and he lost part of his foot. Because the lights were damaged, the funny car final used a flag starter. At Fremont, Ongais set a 208.32 track record. Another win came over an eight-car field on March 14 at OCIR for the blue Mustang's last win. A first-round 7.60/193.96 advanced when low qualifier Mike Van Sant lost oil pressure and shut off on the line. A semifinal 7.72/193.13 beat Steve Bovan, who lost an engine. In the final, a 7.61/187.50 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.09/176.12. OCIR held its final All-Pro race on March 28, and Ongais ran a first-round 8.37/113.63 easing up over a fouling Leroy Hales. Up against Tom McEwen in round two, he lost fire, and Gunter's VW was called in on the break rule to replace him. On April 18 at OCIR for another eight-car show, Danny qualified with a 7.39/182.18. He beat Bob Pickett (8.37/182) in the first round, with a 7.61/184.80. In the semifinal, a broken fuel pump drive ended his chances. Arnie Behling crashed and totaled the car at Lions soon after. Best NHRA National event speed 199.11, but in this car?

Notes: Jim started the '71 season by running at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. He qualified #10 with a 7.54 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he was caught napping by Ron O'Donnell, who put a 7.27/202 run on Jim's quicker but losing 7.23/202.70. He was at Fremont the next day for its Funny Car Championships. Jim Dunn and JJ had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Liberman's 8.25/187.88 coming out on top over Dunn's 8.36/182. In round two, a 7.42/189.46 beat Rich Siroonian, but he lost in the semifinals to Gene Snow. On January 10, he was at Lions for AHRA's first of ten Grand American races of '71. Jim qualified with a 7.01 and in the first round, ran his best ever (to this point) of 6.89 at 206.42. Unfortunately, even with that strong run, he was late off the line and lost to Leroy Goldstein's 6.96/207 in the "Ramchargers" car. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Jim qualified with a 7.47 and, in the first round, ran 7.02/202.70 over John Lombardo. A 7.39 beat an out-of-shape Tom Sturm in round two, but a third-round 6.91/211.76 wasn't enough to beat Snow's 6.87/211. Early in March, Jim covered for a sick Pat Minick and drove the "Chi-Town Hustler" to win Southeastern Dragway's Spring Funny Car Championships. Late in March, he was back in his own car for a best-of-three-match race against Arne Swensen at Cecil County. Liberman reset the track record with a 7.08 at 179.64 to win the first race, and he made it two straight by winning the next race as well. Formerly listed 6.51/226.70 times, but those are very quick for 1971. We need confirmation. Jim ran a confirmed 6.78/217.39 and 6.82/201.79 at Atco. He ran 6.77/216.86 track record at NED on 9/19/71 in winning the New England Funny Car Nats and ran 6.95/211.26 (track record) at Epping on 7/04/71.

Notes: Larry was at Irwindale for its New Year's Day Race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Arnold's 7.06/205.94 qualified #3. A first-round 7.15/180.72 advanced, but he lost in round two. His next stop was at Lions for the first AHRA Grand American of '71. Over 30 cars attempted to qualify, and Larry's 7.08 just made the show. In the opening round, his 7.12 beat Don Schumacher's off-pace 7.35, but the "Kingfish" came up to the line ailing in round two and lost to Stan Shiroma. Irwindale held a four-car, pre-Winternationals race. Larry qualified #2 with a 7.05/211.76 (Top Speed). A first-round 7.21/178.21 beat Randy Walls, who lost an engine. In the final, he went up against Jake Johnston. The two had a great race, with both running 7.15 (Arnold at 209.78), but the "Kingfish" got the win light. Unfortunately, he didn't run nearly that well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, as he failed to qualify. He qualified #4 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.84/217.39, but opponent Wayne Mahaffey failed to fire in the opening round. So, Larry went on a single that saw his motor blow, and he coasted through with a 9.32 to advance. Arnold was unable to repair for his second-round race against Bobby Rowe driving the "Super Duster." Larry won the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario in November with best times of 6.84/212.

Notes: Higginbotham was at Green Valley Raceway on September 3. It was a day that he would never forget. He had won his first-round race with a 7.49. Everything seemed good for his second-round race. His opponent was running a Chrysler Hemi. The Chevy engines would heat up quickly, so the two competitors agreed to do two burnouts and then stage. While Mart did his two burnouts and pulled to the line. He looked over as the other driver was in the process of doing his third. Higginbotham checked his temperature gauge, and it was creeping up. He was getting frustrated as his opponent pulled to the line and did one more short burnout. By now, the engine was hot. When the two finally raced, Mart got out on him and was in the lead, but coming up to the finish line, the car exploded into a ball of fire. He couldn't see anything and reached around for the fire bottle. He didn't know if he was on or off the track, and the parachute had burned off shortly after he deployed it. He was having a tough time getting the mess stopped, and five feet from the end of the track, he finally did. Harry Schmidt was the first to get to him as he had been down at the end of the track. The ambulance arrived, and they flipped the body's remains off the chassis. Mart's arm had been badly burnt. The fire extinguisher system had been installed only three weeks before this race. He did not like to race with his fire boots as he found them too uncomfortable and bulky to use. He hadn't worn them on his first pass but had them on for the second. He also was wearing his goggles for the first time. Usually, he wore his glasses. It was a wake-up call for him as he always wore them after that. Not long after (September 6), Mart raced at LaPlace for a four-car round-robin. He was unable to get the car to run in the sevens. He lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.33/205 in the first race with an 8.01/184.42. He singled in his second race with an 8.20/157.61. In the last race, Al Vanderwoulde's 7.98/150 beat his 8.24/158.42. He ran an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20 but popped a blower in the first round and lost. He did much better the following week (September 28) at Rockingham for the AHRA US Open, where he made it to the final before losing to Gene Snow's 7.13. He got a big win at Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19. He qualified second with a 7.60 and ran an even quicker 7.56 over Paula Murphy in the first round. In the second round, a 7.72 beat John Dekker's 8.22. Snow fouled against him in the semifinals. In the final, he ran another good run of 7.57, but it wasn't needed as Connie Kalitta broke, giving Mart his first big victory. Sid Foster met Mart at Carlisle ark for a best two out of three match race. A 7.97/193.20 lost to Sid's 7.92/198 in the first race, but he picked it up to a 7.33/193 in the second race to beat Foster's 7.51/199. In the tiebreaker, Mart broke a rear end on the burnout letting Foster single for the match race win. He was the quickest qualifier (7.30) at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on November 7. The actual race was postponed by rain until November 16. In his first race, a 7.95/195.65 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.74/161. In his second race, he did his burnout and found that he had no reverse. That let Gene Snow run a 7.54/194 solo pass. Mart got it all together for his last race, beating Bob Bedell with a 7.64. Mart won at Irwindale on November 23 over a 32-car field. He ran 7.54/187.50 over Della Woods (8.44/174), an 8.68 over a blowing-up Paul Gordon, a 7.60/176.81 over Jess Tyree (8.23/182), and a 7.73/187.10 in the semifinals beat Fred Goeske's 7.81/184 Road Runner. In the final, he defeated Dave Beebe for the victory. - RH | BBC/TorqueFlite/Hardy combo. Featured in 1/71 issue of Super Stock & Funny Car. - RT | Ran 7.35 at Rockingham.

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedlik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 MPH funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph while at the same time rumored to be experimenting with an exotic fuel (hydrazine?) | Grove had a bad year in '69. At least in comparison to '68 and '70. He had lots of transmission problems and was also trying to sort out the Boss 429 as well as running the proven SOHC. He failed to qualify at both the Irwindale New Year's Day Race and the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9 where an 8.08 was only good for the eighth alternate. He also failed to qualify at Bakersfield for the March Meet. Grove was the Killer Car on the match race trail in '68 and was feared by everyone who matched against him, but '69 was not the same. On March 30, he was at Aquasco for a best of three match against Lew Arrington. He won the first race with a shut off 8.61/168.22 when Lew got out of shape, but in the second race while coming to the line, it looked like a blower let go, but it was actually his motor self-destructing. Lew soloed in the "Brutus" to two more wins for the match race win. He ran Fred Goeske at Capitol on April 12 and lost two straight even though he set Top Speed at 195. He ran better at Aquasco on May 4 for their fourth annual Funny Car Invitational. A first-round 7.91/191.08 beat Tom McEwen's off pace 8.23 and another 7.91/191.88 in the semis advanced over Frank Oglesby in the Don Nicholson Cougar. In the final, Tom fouled against Jim Liberman's 7.86/189. On May 27, Aquasco held another eight-car Funny Car race. Grove's 8.10/188.66 in the first round, lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.83/197. After his loss, Tommy came back out later and made two runs, an 8.12/189.86 and an 8.09/191.88. Liberman met Grove at York US 30 on June 7 for another match race and JJ beat Grove three straight races. On June 21, Grove was at Lakeland for the Memphis Funny Car Championships. He fouled against Dick Harrell in the first round, and shut down to an 8.81/165. He had some more bad luck the next day at Kingston when he lost a best of three match to Paula Murphy. On July 3, Edgewater held an eight-car Funny Car show. Unfortunately, Charlie Allen strapped a 7.37 Low ET of the meet run on Tom in the first round, putting the Mustang on the trailer. He also lost in the first round, at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car event on July 16. This time, Oglesby's 7.98/178 beat Tom's ailing 8.71/187.88. He ran much better at the Cars Magazine Meet on July 20 where he set a 7.42 track record at 201 in the first round, while beating Al Graeber. In round two a 7.74/197.36 beat Ron Rivero's out-of-shape pass. But then the rain came and the rest of the race was to be run on Sunday. Grove had prior commitments and could not run Sunday. Liberman had a rematch with Grove at Capitol on September 20 and once again JJ prevailed although the times were close. Jim ran a best of 7.28/199.10 to Grove's 7.29/203. The following day (September 21) he ran at the third annual New England Funny Car Championships where he set a 7.30 Epping track record in the first round, while losing to Roger Lindamood's 7.33/198. Tom's speed was 199.50. An interesting thing happened to Grove on October 11 when he showed up to run at the OCIR Funny Car Invitational. He was informed that his competition license had expired back in Jan and he was unable to run. After straightening out the drivers license issue, he showed up at Irwindale on October 18 for the East/West Championships, but lost to Liberman's 7.76/195 in the first round, with an out-of-shape 8.23. All cars had run the first-round with the losers going into a bracket two while the winners ran bracket one. So Tom then met Rich Siroonian in bracket two, but his 8.02/184.80 lost to Rich's 7.53/199. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but lost a blower early in the race. - Ron Howard

Notes: Randy raced at three events in 1999 with great success at the Joliet event. He also may have run the family funny car at some of these. We need to validate. Randy was the third alternate at the Winternationals at 5.730/257.33. He qualified #16 at Phoenix at 5.382/266.69 and lost to John Force in round one, 4.98/301 to 5.123/294.56. He qualified #5 at Joliet (definitely in the Gibbs car) at 4.986/306.53. In round one, he beat ron Capps, 5.014/295.34 to 5.18/282. Randy took out Del Worsham in round two, 4.988/286.07 to 5.39/203. He had a thrilling race with John Force in the semis, but he lost a close 5.003/298 to 5.006/292.84 decision to the champ. That was Randy's last national event of the year.

Notes: 1973 winner Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars Series. Set Green Valley Race City Track Record on 3/73 at 6.50/219. Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.55/218 bests. David was at ESTA Drag Strip in mid-June for a four-car show. In his first race, a 6.82/171.42 beat Harland Thompson's 7.11/193 in the "Tom and Jerry" car. On his second run, he beat Pete Hill's 6.87/182 with a 6.61/202.24. Ray went undefeated when he ran 6.65/206.88 to beat Pee Wee Wallace's 6.84/196 in his final race. Shortly after that, he was at Beech Bend for the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. David was the low qualifier with a 6.64/223.32, and in the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.56 at 221.67 that beat Roger Lindamood. He went up against the "LA Hooker" driven by Dave Condit in the final, and Ray's 6.83/208.81 took the victory over Condit's troubled 8.28/106.

Notes: Segrini was driving Kosty's car from at least March through June 1973. He was at Lakeland on March 4 for the IHRA Winternationals. Al qualified #11, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.13/193.53 lost to eventual winner Pat Foster's 6.83/205 in the Barry Setzer Vega. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.58/225.00 qualified #11. The car lost fire on the line in the first round, advancing Ed McCulloch. Al was at Englishtown in April for an eight-car show. A first-round 6.68/219.51 beat Tom Prock's 7.08/181 in the "Custom Body" car, but he had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. He was really running well at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. He only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.76 in the first round, beat #2 qualifier Dale Emery driving the "Jeg's" Camaro. That time was good enough for Low ET, but he stepped it up even further in the semifinals when he tied the track ET record with a 6.65 at 218.97 (Top Speed) while beating Bill Leavitt. Unfortunately, he had troubles in the final and lost to Russell Long, driving Charlie Proite's Charger. Al was at Connecticut for its 13th annual Memorial Day Championships. He set Low ET at 6.60 and finished runner-up to Leavitt. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals (times not reported). The following weekend (June 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he reached the second round before he lost to Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." On July 4, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He won his first-round race but lost to Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals.

Notes: Qu Voe is a chemical company. | The best for Qu Voe Charger in '73 was 6.56/225 at New York National. We ran the Charger at Miami in early '73 - the second season for that car - and beat Shirl Greer first-round with a 6.68/223. At the time that was the best we had ever run. The car had a Halibrand quick change rear, which was being used by some cars at the time. It had worked okay the previous year with a smaller motor, but it couldn't handle a 484 inches. Second round, we had the Max, and the rear end broke about ten feet off the starting line. Back in Chicago, we replaced the Halibrand with a Bob Stange Dana 60 rear. Ed mounted his chutes on the rear end with a new bracket. Our next race was at Martin, and we ran McCulloch on our first pass. Ed ran 6.61 and lost to a 50-something from Ed. When he dumped the chutes, the bracket broke and the car went off the end of the track. We had to patch up the body and repaint it. What had been a very good looking car, ended up being kind of ugly. But we had some good days the rest of that season. - Paul Stenquist (Rick Howard photo from 1973 Martin, MI.)

Notes: Teal qualified ninth at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.13/200.44. That put him against Danny Ongais in the first round, and an 8.34/202.24 lost to the Mustang's 7.77/173. He ran a best-of-three-match race against Terry Hedrick in the "Seaton Shaker" Rat-powered Nova on July 13. He ran well but lost three straight. In the first race, Hedrick got him with a track record 7.49 at 197 to Teal's 7.73/196.50. The second race was a close contest, with the Nova's 7.59/196 just beating the Charger's 7.60 at a track record 201.78. Bryan again reset the track speed record in the final race with a 7.62/203.60 that lost to Terry's 7.56/197. On July 20, Continental Divide Raceway hosted the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships. Bryan ran well in the thin air, hitting a first-round 8.49/160.42 over Jack Bradley's Camaro. A semifinal, Low ET at 8.26 at a track-record 181.80 beat Ron Leslie, who lost a transmission. But the final was called due to rain. Martin, Mich held an eight-car show on August 30, and Bryan ran well. He advanced past the first-round with an 8.12/138.46 when Terry Hedrick fouled away a 7.42/197. In the semifinal, an 8.58/159.57 advanced when Pete Gates fouled. In the final, a 7.81/195 by Gary Bolger left Teal the runner-up money.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1988. Dale qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.601/255.68. He improved to 5.452/268.25 in round two to beat Darrell Amberson and an even better 5.429/269.05 in the semifinals beat a tire-smoking john Force. He faced Jim Head in the final. Head had problems and Pulde got the victory with a 6.024/223.26. NHRA best times of 5.404 at Indy and 270.27 at the Pomona finals. Formerly listed 274 mph. Did that occur at IHRA Ennis in October?
