Notes: Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. - RT | Steve started the season with a Chevy motor (see the other 1968 entry), but he jumped behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's Charger for a while. It was only for a short time as Dave Beebe later took over. But Steve really noticed the power difference between his Chevy and the Keith Black Hemi the Charger ran. Soon after, the Chevy was gone from the Camaro, and a Hemi resided in its place. On June 22, he showed up at OCIR with Barry McGowen's Keith Black Hemi neatly tucked into the Camaro's chassis. Bovan was there for the Funny Car vs. Fuel Altereds race. He beat Sush Matsubara and Randy Bradford in the first two rounds with a best of 8.03/184.80. Due to breakage, he lined up against Charlie Allen in the third round. Steve fouled, but he still proved the power of his new Hemi as he set Top Speed of the day with an 8.03/187.10. He was at Lions on June 29 with the now Hemi-powered car. Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang broke in the first round, so Bovan soloed at 8.29/184.74. In the semifinal, he had transmission issues and lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman. The following week (July 3), he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He fouled against Charlie Allen in the opening round, but he came back out for a couple of consolation races. In one of the races, his 8.25/185.58 beat Ray Alley who broke, and in his other consolation race, he shut off against Gene Modlin in Gene Conway's Firebird. He also ran a best of three best against the "Freight Train" driven by Bob Muravez at this race. In their first race, the Camaro blew its transmission. After Steve replaced it, Steve ran a great 7.63/194.38 beat he lost to Bob's 7.69/196. | Steve ran 8.28/187.10 at OCIR Funny Car Meet in late 1968 (Cars Magazine, January 1969). - Danny White |

Notes: Used Cordoba body after ruining Dart. Tom blew the Cordoba body off this car in early 1977 and finished the season in yet another Dart. Chronology for this Cordoba is July/August 1976 through March/April 1977. Due to the notch-back roof, the car had turbulence issues on the rear deck, and just weeks after its debut, Ivo was using coat hangers (!) to keep the rear spoilers from tearing off the car. This is a true story; I witnessed it firsthand. - David Hapgood | Ivo was at Sacramento on January 1 for a best of three match race against Dale Armstrong who was running Nitro for the first time. Ivo won all three races and the match with a best of 6.22/214. |

Notes: Bob debuted the new Starfire at Fremont's Nitro Bowl. He set Low ET and Top Speed there with a 6.49/210.77 in the opening round. He failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals as the 5th alternate (times unavailable). At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.709/173.41 qualified on the "bump spot" of the sixteen-car field. In the first round, Pickett beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" at 6.45/197.80, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Don Prudhomme. On April 9, he was Irwindale for the big 64 car show. While Pickett never reached the final, he did turn the third-best ET, a 6.28. Tulsa was his next stop for the AHRA Springnationals. There he lasted until round two before losing to Gene Snow. In June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.43/228.43 behind Tom Hoover's 6.39. Unfortunately, he lost a driveshaft and the race in the first round to Tom Prock. He got his first NHRA National event victory a week later (June 12) at the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #8 with a 6.24/231.95. He bested Gordon Mineo in round one, 6.25/212.76 to 6/65/177. In round two, he then ran 6.21/228.42 over Eddie Pauling's identical 6.21 at 198.67. He took out Billy Meyer's 7.05 in the semis with an excellent 6.19/228.42. In the final, he faced none other than Don Prudhomme in the Army-sponsored Arrow. Bob ripped off a 6.22/231.95 to do what few did in '77 - beat the "Snake." Don followed Pickett through with a 6.26/236.84. It was a really good showing for the team. At the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown, Bob qualified #10 with a 6.33/228.42. But he broke against Tom McEwen in the opening round. He had another first-round loss at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42 on July 31. Pickett qualified well, running 6.38/227.77 for the #3 spot in the eight-car show, but a 6.56/225.00 lost to Billy Graham's 6.35/222 in the opening round. The team did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they did attend the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. The Starfire ran well there, beating Al Bergler in the first round, with a 6.24, and he beat Prock in round two before losing to Dale Pulde's 6.13 in the semifinals with a 6.21. A week later (August 21), he was at Spokane Raceway for the AHRA World Finals. In the first round, he ran 6.52/208.80 over Bob Papirnick, but in round two, his 6.57/220.04 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.45/212 in the "Blue Max." The team qualified #11 at Indy with a 6.213/229.00. Bob beat Gordie Bonin in round one, 6.369/216.87 to 6.62/224. In round two, he lost to Tom Prock, 6.24/221 to 6.325/208.33. Bob grabbed the #13 spot at Ontario for the World Finals at 6.26/233.76. He shut off on the line against Gordie Bonin in round one. | The 6.17 might have been run during qualifying at the '77 Manufacturer's Meet, which Pickett won, according to my long-gone NDs and Drag News as a 16-year old Funny Car geek. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Mikres was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5,46/263.77 to qualify #10. An opening round 5.64/256.70 beat Jim Murphy but a second-round 5.63/257.06 fell to Ed McCulloch's 5.38/258. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.33/273.22. His first-round win was costly as he blew his engine, but his 7.75/197.41 beat a troubled Jim Dunn. Glenn was unable to run his second-round race against Bruce Larson. Things went worse at the NHRA Supernationals, where the team failed to qualify with a 10.34/90.70 best. Gainesville was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Mikres qualified on the "bump" with a 5.67/255.53. He faced low qualifier Jim White driving the "Hawaiian" in round one. White had a left rear slick explode that destroyed the body in their race, and Glenn advanced. A second-round 5.47/251.60 lost to Larson's 5.28/278. Glen qualified #3 at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals with a 5.260, his best NHRA ET. He fireballed an engine in the first round, while beating Freddie Neely and could not return for his second-round race against Mark Oswald. Ran his best NHRA speed at the World Finals at 274.64. Formerly listed 5.187/286.25, but the speed was from 1991, and I'm unsure about the ET. Does anybody know? Photo from 1990 Nationals. |

He qualified #5 with a 6.331/239.36. In the first round, he beat an out of shape Rodney Flournoy with an early shut off 6.70. In the second round, he had trouble and slowed to a 10.18 that lost to Dale Pulde's 6.68/217. On March 15, he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. Dennis qualified #6 with a 6.41/231.95, but an off pace 7.14/151 lost to Flournoy's 6.50/216 in the first round. Dennis was the eighth alternate at the NHRA World Finals at OCIR with a 6.393/224.43 effort. |

Notes: Gary was running hard in '75. It was a good lead-up to his great '76 season. He started the '75 season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere, qualifying #5 in the sixteen-car show. He lost in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.44 qualified #14. A first-round 6.40/205.47 beat Neil Leffler, but unfortunately, he had crossed the centerline and was disqualified. He ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.46/212.76 qualified #7 in the twelve-car field but had the misfortune of breaking in the first round, against Don Prudhomme. At the Gatornationals, Gary ran 6.42/227.27 to qualify #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in the first round, but lost to Shirl Greer in round two, where he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. His next stop was at Irwindale for the 32-car Coca-Cola Championships. Gary beat an out-of-shape Leroy Chadderton in the opening round with a 6.80/178.92 and an easy 7.43/152.02 advanced past Larry Arnold who got sideways in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am and shut off. In round three, Burgin had another easy run where Norm Wilcox, driving the "Hawaiian," had issues and shut off on the line. But in the semifinals, he broke against Prudhomme, and the "Snake" ran a track record 6.25 to win. In May, he got a runner-up finish to Jake Johnston in the Pisano and Matsubara Vega at the Irwindale Fox Hunt race. Fremont also held a "Fox Hunt" race in May, and it featured the FC's running the Top Fuel cars with a .30 handicap on the 'tree. The cars all made three passes, and in Gary's first run, his 6.55/213 beat Dave Uyehara's Chevy-powered car. The second race was weird as the 'tree was never activated, yet his opponent, Gary Ritter, flew to an apparent win with a 6.71/172 while Burgin shut off on the line. The third round was stranger still: as soon as the 'tree blinked green, he and James Warren roared off, and the power went out. No times were recorded for their runs, but witnesses said that they were flying. Warren crossed the line first. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.50/215.82. A first-round 6.54/211.76 beat Al Segrini's 6.68/201 in the "Black Magic" Vega. But in round two, his 6.58/221.13 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.45/205. Gary was back at Irwindale for its Doubleheader (motorcycles and FC) event. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.72/197.80 beat a tire-smoking Arnold who was now driving the "Lil' Demon." But a 6.76/208.33 failed to get past Jim Dunn's 6.57/210 in the semifinal. He had an interesting outing at the first NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento. He soloed in the first round, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.55/211.77. In the semifinals, he made another single at 6.73/161 when Dunn's Satellite broke. In the final, he went up against Roger Garten. It wasn't much of a race as Burgin had an oil fire on the line and shut off while Garten grabbed the win. Near the end of June, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.29/222.22. He advanced past a broken Bill Leavitt in the first round, with a 6.54/204.80. In round two, he smoked the tires and lost to McCulloch. The following week (July 20) found Gary at Minnesota for the third NHRA Division 5 race. It was only a four-car show, and Burgin won quite easily, setting low et and Top Speed in the final with a 6.67/221.67 over Carl Swanson's 6.97/200. He also won the next Division 5 race at Bison Dragways in Manitoba. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 6.69/222.22, and in the final beat Topper Kramer's 7.06/184 with a 6.73/222.22. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Gary didn't run as well as he would have liked. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.60/213.27, putting him in a first-round match with low qualifier Prudhomme. Gary's off pace 6.75/216.86 lost to the "Snake's" 6.47/212. The fourth NHRA Division 7 race was held at Bonneville Raceway on August 17, and the Funny Car field was again reduced to just four cars. Gary's 6.84/201.27 qualified #2, but in the first round, he was upset by Dennis Geisler's 6.65/199 in the "Lil' Demon" that beat his 6.94/204. Burgin ran 6.313/203.61 and 6.47/184.42 in winning the Funny Car Race of Champions at Englishtown, NJ, in August 1975. He had won Division 7 in 1974. - RT | Photo from Indy 1975. - MS | Ran 6.31/228.42 at Indy US Nationals 9/75. |

Notes: Vic was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.62/209.79. Unfortunately, a tire-smoking 7.97 in the first round lost to Norm Wilcox's 7.08 in the "Hawaiian." At St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals, a 6.80/196.51 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He lost to eventual winner Dick Custy in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Tri-City for an eight-car show. All cars were to make three passes. Vic ran 6.96/197.80 to beat Wilcox's 7.97 in his first race. In the second race, his 6.83/200.00 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.72/191. In his final appearance, he got a solo run, running 7.02/196.93. In August, Vic was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. In the first round, he set Top Speed with a 6.53/222.77 that beat Denny Savage's out-of-shape 8.83 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, he improved to a 6.50 at 220.04 to beat Al Segrini's 6.80/211. Unfortunately, he suffered engine damage on the run and could not return for the final. Runner-up to PHR Championships race at US 131 to Don Prudhomme. Cecelia ran 6.60, 6.51, and 6.44. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1976. |

Notes: Ran late 1966/67, first as Hilborn-injected, later as blown. Notable for stock-displacement, stock crank small block 289 Ford. Ran fuel, backed with a C-4 auto trans. One-piece lift-off glass body and unusual aluminum frame (including roll bar) contributed to light weight. (The truck weighed in sub-1400 pounds, and Nash was quoted in late '66 as saying he was still shooting for 1200.) Still, the aluminum frame scared the NHRA, which banned this construction in 1967, ending the Bronco's career. Nash went on to earn fame for developing the very popular Doug Nash 5-speed transmission. | Doug Nash ran a B/FX 289 Comet in '64-'65. He debuted this Bronco late in '66. It still ran a 289, but after that, it was like night and day. His new Bronco featured a 112" aluminum chassis built by himself and Tom Smith of Wolverine Diesel. The transmission was a C-4 Ford and the rear was also a Ford with 4.71 gears. First runs were made without the body on the chassis and the best was 9.00/160. After the body was mounted, the best was 9.20/145. The boxy Bronco body really slowed the mph down. The candy lime and burgundy lacquer was applied by Paul Shedlik. |

Notes: Dale started his NHRA national event season at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He was having all kinds of problems in qualifying and, at one point, field-stripped the car down to the bare chassis in the Gainesville Hilton Hotel parking lot. Even after all that, he could only run a 7.380 best (speed unknown), far from the 6.03 "bump." He went to Baton Rouge, where he was the third alternate for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 10.98 (speed unknown) shutoff pass. He was at Columbus on June 10 for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 6.194/207.37 (fourth alternate) failed to crack the 6.00 "bump." Shortly after that (June 24), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.12/231.95 qualified #6. He lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the first round. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Grandnationals at 6.400/180.36 but lost to Frank Hawley in round one when he fell off to a 7.799/111.38. The following week (July 8), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Dale's 6.11/225 qualified #11, and in the first round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.02 at 236. The problem was that Don Prudhomme was running 5.82/250 in the other lane. Dale qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a new personal best, a 5.980/233.76. In the first round, he lost to Tim Grose, 5.941/243.90 to 8.315/113.92. That was Dale's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Raymond won the 1974 AHRA Winternationals beating Don Prudhomme in the final. He did not qualify a the NHRA Winternationals, however. Raymond was at Atco Dragway in May for its Factory Showdown race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.67/225.56 (Top Speed)defeated Pete Hill's 6.98/200. In the semifinal, a 6.65/207.85 beat the "Pabst" Charger's 7.14. He faced Pee Wee Wallace in the final, and the two had a great race that had Wallace's 6.57/214 come out on top over Beadle's better 6.55 (Low ET) at 225.56. He went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify. Beadle won the Funny Car Spectacular at Englishtown on July 3. Twelve cars ran the first-round, with the four lowest ETs moving into the semifinals. In the first round, Raymond's 6.59/210.77 beat Fred Goeske and advanced into the semis. There, a 6.77/161.87 got him into the final when Billy Meyer's Mustang II broke on his burnout. He went up against Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car in the final. Beadle's 6.65/192.71 beat Prock's 6.72/213 for the victory. Back at Englishtown on July 14 for the NHRA Summernationals, things didn't go as well as he failed to qualify, ending up as the second alternate. That and Pomona were Raymond's only two NHRA national events this year. | Draglist contributor Rick Howard has a great photo of Barbara Coil, dressed in her skimpy backup girl outfit, reaching into this car with the following story: The US Air Force actually used this photo for their traffic safety program dated circa 1982. Unknown photographer showing Raymond Beadle behind (I believe) Barbara Coil at Muncie (I guess again), circa 1974. I was the Traffic Safety Director (civilian) for the Wright-Patterson (Ohio) AFB Safety Office. I had to actually show this slide (the only one related to drag racing) to hundreds of Air Force trainees for years before they decided in 1985 to turn in the program and destroy the same at Norton AFB, Calif., because of the content the photo. Instead of destroying the 35mm slide, I kept it. Strange, but true. - RH |

Notes: John qualified #12 at Pomona at 6.563/225.56, then went to the semis on race day, hitting a nice 6.510/198.67 in the process. John lost to eventual winner Dale Emery in the Jeg's Camaro. That was his only NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: West started the 1988 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/247, setting up a first-round race with low qualifier John Force. He lost the race, running a 5.93/243.24 to Force's 5.40/268. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he again lost to Force in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 5.68/254.45. His 5.98/234.37 in the first round lost to Force's 5.49/267. Shortly after that, the team made a stop at Baylands Raceway for a four-car match run at the East/West Meet. West beat Mike Dunn's 5.67/253 in his first race with a 5.64/249.30. He ran another 5.64 at 245.90 in his second race but lost to Force's 5.61/252. The final was another race between him and Force. Once again, John got the win, running a track record 5.51 at 248 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 5.82/221.13. At the NHRA Gatornationals, West did much better in qualifying, turning a 5.45/268.57 (career-best) for the #5 spot. Unfortunately, he still couldn't get out of the first round, as this time, Jim Head's 7.29/138 beat his 9.67/87.83 in a troubled match. He qualified for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 5.87/258.10 before losing in round one. The next stop for the team was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. West ran 5.70/257.36 to qualify #10. He slowed to 5.86/247.72 in the first round and lost to Jim Head's 5.68/253. The month of May ended with the team at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Only 13 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, West ran 5.72/259.74 for the #10 spot. He continued to have problems getting past round one as this time, he fell to Kenny Bernstein. At Columbus, his 5.77/258.59 qualified #15 for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he took a loss in the first round, this time to Ed McCulloch. He finally got around the first round at the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 14 cars showed for the race, and his 5.67/259.74 qualified #9. Typically, he would have run the low qualifier in a sixteen-car field, but because the field was two short, he ran the second qualifier McCulloch in round one and won. He then sent Jerry Caminito home in round two with a 5.70/251. His run ended in the semi-final, where a 5.68 was not enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.55. Johnny ran 5.35/270 at the Englishtown Funny Car Nationals. His best NHRA national event times were 5.427 at Maple Grove and 268.65 at the World Finals at Pomona. |

Notes: Tharp was at the Texas Motorplex in April for the IHRA Texas Nationals. His 5.80/242.45 qualified #14, but he lost to Mike Dunn in the first round, of competition. On May 15, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There, his 5.61 qualified #6, but he lost to R.C. Sherman in the opening round. Photo from Columbus 1988. Richard drove the 'Max for most of the NHRA season, although Ronny Young took over at the World Finals. Richard's best NHRA times were a 5.569 in eliminations at Seattle and 259.94 in a second alternate effort at Columbus. Where did Richard run 5.40/270? We may need to remove those times. |

Notes: Ray built another car and was going to drive it himself. He asked me to come to Memphis for the first race. But we decided that it was better if I drove the car and so I did after being laid up for a year. In addition to qualifying at Indy 9/72 with a 6.533/224.43, we ran 6.48, 6.46, and 6.44 at OCIR at the Manufacturer's Race in 1972. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15 | Duane broke at the OCIR Mfg. Notes: This car made its debut at the 1972 NHRA Nationals were it qualified fourteenth with a 6.617/217.39. There were several magazine articles on this car and the March 1973 issue of Drag Racing USA states that the best recorded ET and speed for this car was a 6.50/224.50. At the 1972 OCIR Manufacturers Meet Al qualified for the Ford team and won all three of his races that evening. He and Billy Meyer were the only members of the Ford team that won all of their races, these wins insured that Ford won the "Manufacturers" team title. - DH | Featured in the 2/73 issue of Hi-Performance Cars. - RT | OCIR Mfg. Meet 6.76 over Frank Rupert shown on the movie Funny Car Summer. |

Notes: Car featured "Flynn & Kushi" primary signage on door, replacing Bill Flynn's customary "Yankee Peddler" tag, which is radically downsized and moved to front fender. Photo from Connecticut Dragway 9/07/70. - RT | Bill faced Al Hanna's "Eastern Raider" on April 12 for a best of three match race at Maple Grove. Flynn's 7.84/185.18 won the first race when Hanna blew his engine. The back-up car of Al Phillips filled in for the last two races and Bill won both with runs of 8.00/185.94 and 7.71/186.72. A week later (April 19), he was up against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in another best of three match at Connecticut. Bill won the first two races with runs of 7.83/183.29 and 7.73/191.48 to sew up the match, but the two decided to make a third run for the fans. This time Bill lost his transmission on the line and Frank took a win with a 7.72/187. He ran really well at Maple Grove on June 20 for an eight-car show. In the first round, he ran a track record 7.15 at 198 while beating Tom Sneden's 7.45/196. But in the semifinals, his quicker 7.54/190 lost to Phil Castronovo's 7.56/191. Flynn was at Epping, N. H., on September 20 for the Fourth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals. It was a big 32 car show and Bill made it all the way into the semifinals. He started his day by beating the "Super Twister" with a 7.27/206.80. A 7.40/208 beat Sarge Arciero in the "Frantic Ford" in round two. He got crossed-up in the third round, but he still advanced with a 7.84/160 before losing to Jim Liberman's 7.37/207 in the semifinal with an ailing 11.40 time. |

Notes: Tommy Grove was really getting his act together in '67. Near the end of the season, a supercharger was added to his SOHC motor and the car began to lay down some numbers. On October 22, he was at Fremont for the exhibition Car Championships. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Terry Hedrick. Just a week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. He upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the opening round of eliminations, but he lost in round two. Grove was at Lions on November 4 for the East-West Championships. He got some payback on Hedrick in round two where he beat him with a 7.98. He faced Nicholson in the final and despite running a strong 8.10/167.59 he finished runner-up to "Dyno's" 7.97/174. At OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, Grove went up against Hedrick in his first race and Grove was late off the line. Terry's 8.23/180 held off the Mustang's quicker 8.11/185.90. Notes: The "Hawaiian" qualified #9 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, which meant that Colson had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the opening round. Don's 6.23 put Ron's 6.32 on the trailer. The team was really running well at Sacramento for the Governor's Cup Championships. Colson ran a 6.16 on his way to a final-round meeting with Gordie Bonin. In the final, he improved to 6.14/226 to win over Bonin's 6.20. In Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Ron's 6.18/225.56 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.24 beat Bonin, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.66 in a loss to Ed McCulloch. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.184 at Ontario and 230.17 at Seattle (plus a nice 6.191 at Indy). South Chicago Auto Parts sponsored. |

Notes: Began the year in the 1975 car before the new car was completed. Ran 6.46 at Bakersfield March Meet 3/76. | Tom had a good season in '76. It could have been a great season if it wasn't for his old teammate Don Prudhomme. That could be said for a lot of the funny car drivers in '76 as the "Snake" was cleaning up and winning everything. McEwen started the year by winning the Nitro Bowl at Fremont in Jan. All fourteen cars in the field made three runs and the driver with the most wins was declared the winner. Tom started by running 6.52 to beat Jim Dunn, a second-round 6.56 beat Tommy Ivo and a 6.51 in his last race beat Ed McCulloch's close 6.52. He then went to Tucson where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field for the AHRA Winternats. Traction was marginal at best and Tom beat Gary Burgin's 7.02 in the first round, with a 6.99. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.74 loss to Shirl Greer's 6.84. He did not go to Beeline and race the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals McEwen ran a best of 6.37/230.17 that failed to qualify. He then won the OCIR East-West meet the following week. He lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round, at the Bakersfield March Meet. |
