Notes: Kenny started the year winning at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he didn't do quite as well. Bernstein ran 6.342/222.22 to qualify #15, and he beat Dale Pulde in the first round, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. Burgin got him at the next NHRA meet as well, the Gatornationals in March. Kenny qualified #10 with a 5.95/241.93, but a first-round 5.94/245.90 lost to Gary's Low ET run of 5.78/238. Things went more Bernstein's way at Darlington the following weekend (March 20) for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.14 and set Low ET with a 6.13. He beat Pulde in a semifinal tire smoker and then met Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" in the final. Kenny took the win with a 6.21/227.27 over Beadle's 6.39/215. At the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17 at Atlanta, Kenny's best of 6.08/234.98 (second alternate) failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Yet the following week (April 24), he qualified easily for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.02 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He didn't make the finals at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk either, but he did set Low ET at 5.88. A 6.02/222.77 qualified #4 in the eight-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Another 6.02 at 242.58 beat Pulde's 6.14/238, but an off-pace 6.26/226.69 in the semifinals lost to the eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.00/241. He followed the NHRA tour to Columbus for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kenny ran a 5.96/246.57 to qualify #4 but slowed to an off pace 6.25/237.46 in the first round, that lost to John Force's 6.01/246. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field with a "bump" of 6.01. The rough spell continued, with Bernstein failing to make the show at the NHRA Grandnationals, another eight-car show. Things went much better at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There he not only qualified, but he made his way into the final before losing to Beadle and taking the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Summernationals, Kenny made the show with a 6.02/245.23 (#11). He beat a tire-smoking Tom Anderson in the first round, before slowing to a 6.14/236 in round two that lost to Rick Johnson's 6.05/240 in the "Custom Body" Omni. He was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late July. Kenny qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.05/234.37 in the thin air. He beat Pulde's 6.29/229 in the first round, with a 6.08/237.46. In the semifinals, an off pace 6.33/217.91 lost to the race's eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler" at 5.97/233. In August, he won over an eight-car field at Bonneville Raceway. He met Force in the final, and his 6.23/227.85 got the victory over John's 6.25/227. Bernstein got his first NHRA win of the year at Brainerd on August 21 for the Northstar Nationals. He ran 5.88/245.23 to qualify #2. In round one, a 5.96/244.56 beat Pulde, and in round two, a 5.97/238 advanced when Ken Veney fouled. He got an easy run in the semifinals when Mark Oswald broke in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he still ran 5.97/243 for the win. In the final, he was up against Hawley. Kenny gunned him down with a 5.92/246.57 over Frank's 5.96/244. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. Longtime Bernstein crewman Mike Guger poses with the Bud King. |

Notes: Rob qualified #5 at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals at 6.032/241.93 (Top Speed). In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.08/234.98 lost to Al Segrini's 6.09/234. At OCIR, for the NHRA World Finals, he ran 6.05/239.99 to qualify #7. Many cars burned up at OCIR during the Finals, and the "Assassination" was one of them. Williams blew an engine while defeating Hank Johnson in round one. The resulting fireball knocked the team out of competition for round two. | I have 5.98 in '81. 5.92/248 in '82. Notes: World champion in 1976. Ran 5.978 at Indy to qualify number one. Also 6.026 at Winters and duplicated it at the Ontario Finals. Both the Winternationals 6.02 and Indy 5.97 were national records (the 5.987 at Ontario 75 was not backed up). Went 235.60 at Sanair 76 and 240.00 at Ontario 76. Did Don run 247.93 somewhere? Formerly listed that, but removed it until we get confirmation. Ran 6.24 Gainesville Dragway track record. Won 7 of 8 NHRA National events in '76; his only loss was to Burgin at Indy. Great article on HotRod.com with Snake describing his performance advantage over the rest of the Funny Car field in '75 and '76. |

Notes: Don started the year at the AHRA Winternationals where he debuted his new Horizon. He was also debuted his new sponsor, Pepsi, which replaced the Army that had backed him since '74. It was an eight-car show and Prudhomme qualified #4 on the tricky track surface with a 6.89/213. He faced Tom Hovland in the first round, and they both smoked their tires, but the "Snake" got the win with a 7.32 over Hovland's 8.54. In the semifinals, Prudhomme again lit up the tires and lost to the eventual winner of the event, Kenny Bernstein. Don qualified #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.06/239.99, but lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" who ran 5.93/245 in the semifinals when he had tire shake and had to shut down. After the first two races of the year, Don had the engine moved back about two inches in the chassis to combat his early season traction problems. He went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals and in qualifying #1 set NHRA records of 5.926/247.25. Don dumped Billy Meyer in the first round, with a 5.97/245.23, but in round two against Bernstein, he got crossed up and crossed the centerline. He then went to State Capitol for a best of three match race against Tom Hoover on March 22. He won the match hitting a best of 6.25/211.76 while Tom's best was 6.45/201. On April 26 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was an eight-car show. Don qualified #5 with a 6.11. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Beadle and won with another 6.11 when Beadle lost a motor. Unfortunately, the "Snake" broke in the semifinals advancing Bernstein into the final. Early in May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 and made it into the semifinals before losing to Hoover. A week later (May 9), Prudhomme won the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.02/241.93 in the eight-car show. In round one, a 6.19/238.09 beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Dunn's 6.32/214 with a 6.17/238.72. In the final he ran Craig Epperly in Don Tate's "Superstar." Craig overpowered the track and smoked the tires and Don got the victory with a 6.56/227.84. Back on the AHRA trail, he was at St. Louis for the Gateway Nationals on June 7. He qualified #2 with a 6.37/231, second to Hoover. A first-round 6.34/233 beat Glenn Mikre's 6.76/231 in Bill Schifsky's Citation. In the semifinals, a 6.26/238.10 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat John Collins' 6.36. In the final, he lost to Hovland's Corvette. At the NHRA Springnationals, Don qualified #2 with a 6.09/239.99 (Top Speed). Unfortunately, he lost to Collins in the first round, with an off-pace 6.56/175.78. At the end of June, he won the AHRA Nationals at San Antonio, Texas. A 5.97/242.58 qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Prudhomme stopped Epperly in round one, with a 6.07/242.58. Dale Pulde shut off in round two and Don's 6.11/225.56 advanced. In the semifinals, his 6.19/230.76 beat Bernstein's 6.24/233. In the final he met a strong running Dale Armstrong. Dale lost a motor and the "Snake" won with a 6.07/241.28. Prudhomme made it two in a row on the NHRA trail when he also won the Grandnationals in Canada on August 9. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 6.15/238.09. This meant that he had to face low qualifier Meyer in the first round. Don was up to the task as he thumped a tire-smoking Meyer with a 6.24/236.22. In the semifinals, Armstrong also smoked the tires against him and his 6.33/227.27 advanced into the final. There, both he and Bernstein had traction problems, but Don recovered first and his 7.18 took the victory. He didn't do so well at the AHRA Western Nationals although he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.12. In the first round, he ran a sub-par 6.43/214.71 that lost to Jim Dunn's 6.25/224. A week later (August 23), AHRA held its World Finals at Spokane and Prudhomme won. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.97 that beat Gary Densham. In the semifinals, he blew an engine on a 6.51/215.82 solo when opponent Mardy Maltais was unable to show. With a new engine installed for the finals, Don once again dipped into the fives with a 5.98/239.36 that beat Gordie Bonin's 6.09/236 for the title. He had more engine trouble at the US Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #2, behind Beadle. He made it into the second round before he lost his engine and the race to Fuzz Miller. Surprisingly, Prudhomme failed to qualify for the sixteen-car show at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. His best of 6.17/234.37 was good for the third alternate. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #2 with a 6.00/238.72 at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals. |

Notes: Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Confirmed 7.95 at Cecil County. | Frank Federici continued to use his '67 car throughout the '68 season. A December '69 Speed and Supercar magazine claimed that the car had run a best of 7.60/203.87. Frank ran at National Trail on June 23. He made two exhibition passes. The first was an 8.24/180.72 that tied the former track ET record and set a new track speed record. On his second pass, an 8.12/181.44 reset both ends of the track record. On July 27 he made it into the final on Saturday at the Cars All-Star International at Cecil County. He had beaten Malcolm Durham earlier with a 7.95/187.10, but in the final, an 8.25/181.08 lost to Dick Loehr's 7.86/182. He didn't do as well on Sunday and failed to make the final rounds. Frank faced off against Bill Lawton at a best two out of three match race at Connecticut on August 4. In the first race, a 7.68/171 by Lawton beat his 8.58/167.28 and in the second race, he lost again when he broke a rear end giving Bill the match race win. | We formerly listed 7.895/195. |

Notes: Rick Howard photos from 2000 NHRA Pontiac excitement Nats, Columbus. John Force showed up with new '00 Mustang (top photo) and struggled in qualifying (finally netting 15th at only 5.09, 285). After deciding the car undriveable, pulled out the 9X Champion '99 Mustang body for eliminations (bottom photo). Improves somewhat, but still lost round one to Jerry Toliver. |

Notes: Gordie had a fabulous year in 1979. He won the Gatornationals, the US Nationals, and the World Finals. His Indy 5.979 was the 4th entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club. | Gordie started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the field, but he lost early. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 but lost to Tripp Shumake driving Johnny Loper's Arrow in the first round. Bonin always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '79 was no exception. His 6.38 qualified #12, and his 6.47 advanced over a crossed-up Shumake in the opening round. In round two, he soloed with a 6.92/221 when Al Segrini could not run. More luck came his way in the semifinals when Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," broke at half-track, and Gordie's 6.93/223 got the win. He faced Tom Hoover in the final and got a great leave that saw his 6.93/224.43 hold on for the victory over Hoover's quicker 6.84/227. A holeshot also won him the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway. There, a final round 6.66/216.78 beat John Force's 6.62. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.20/236.22 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Segrini who was driving the "Custom Body" car. Bonin slipped to a 6.58/187.11 that lost to Al's 6.16/230. Although he failed to make the finals at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he did qualify #2 with a 6.39. H did not race at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Force put on a virtuoso performance at Indy in winning a record-tying 11th event of the season, a 59th career win and a record sixth Winston Funny Car title. And if that wasn't enough, he also won his 4th Big Bud Shootout. Force qualified #1 (4.966 Low ET of Meet and Track Record). |

Notes: Photo from the 1992 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | John started his '92 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.22/283.91. He ran 5.34/273.80 over Tom Hoover in the first round, and a track record 5.18 at 281.25 in round two beat Jerry Caminito. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.28/271.41 when Marc Sievers shut off on the line with no oil pressure. In the final, he faced Jim Epler. Jim had been running steady 5.2's during eliminations and had lane choice going into the final. Epler ran his best ET of eliminations in the final, a 5.26/273, to take the win over Force's 5.32/275.65. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, John set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.24/283.37. In the first round, he beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.33/277.60, but in round two, he fell off to a 5.46/271.98 that lost to eventual winner Hoover's 5.32/259. He qualified #1 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.18/285.08. An improved 5.15/273.30 in the first round, beat Paula Martin, and he ran another 5.15 at 287.35 (Top Speed) in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat Cruz Pedregon's quick-leaving 5.18/276. John took everything there was to win at the NHRA Gatornationals. He took the pole with a 5.21/284.99. He ran 5.27/285.89, 5.21/287.44, and 5.20/286.16 to beat Gary Densham, Whit Bazemore, and a tire-smoking Cruz Pedregon to face Epler in the final for a rematch of the Winternationals final. This time John got the victory, running Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with a 5.15/289.01, winning over Jim's 5.27/275. NHRA held its Winston Invitational at Rockingham in April, and Force qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.33/280.11 (Top Speed and a new track record). Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to a 12.92/69.08 that lost to Mark Oswald's 5.32/276. He won the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. There he qualified #8 with a 5.34/271.98. He improved to a 5.19/269.05 in the first round, over Al Hofmann's 5.22/281. Pedregon smoked the tires in the second round, and John moved on with a 5.21/285.35. In the semifinals, his 5.22/265.33 dropped Chuck Etchells' 5.31/251. He went up against Del Worsham in the final, and the two had a close race with John's 5.24/282.04 beating Del's right-there 5.25/277. |

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Nicoll didn't have the success in '74 that he enjoyed in '73. Jim qualified #7 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.44. He beat Gordie Bonin's 6.73 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.49/225.00. He advanced past the second round when Sush Matsubara broke on the line. In the semifinal, a 6.37/230.17 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.41/230, but, unfortunately for Jim, he broke and was unable to make the final, reinstating Prudhomme. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.87 qualified #12, but an opening round 6.83/212.76 lost to Paul Smith's 6.65/221 in the "Fireball Vega." The team was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim’s quick-leaving 6.71/211.76 beat Pat Foster's 6.66/215 in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn in round two. He fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals at the AHRA Grand American held at Dragway 42 in May. Nicoll failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals. |

Notes: Followed Joe Amato into the 260 mph zone by minutes. He also ran a nice 5.80/255.68 at IHRA Cincinnati. | Bernstein ran well in '84, becoming the first Funny Car driver to run 260. He benefited from wind tunnel testing the previous December. He ended up finishing third in the NHRA year-long points chase and if it were not for Sherm Gunn, he may have finished higher. Gunn beat Bernstein in the first round, three times on the NHRA tour. Still, with the addition of an on-board computer to aid crew chief Dale Armstrong, Kenny was always a threat to win. He started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January. A final round 5.98/248.61 beat Tom McEwen's 6.07/236. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.83 (Low ET) at 252.80. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.90/251.91 lost to John Force's 5.89/247. He made history at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals in March. He qualified #2 with a 5.78/256.41. In the first round, he beat Tom Anderson with a 5.84/256.41. Round two saw his 5.79/257.87 advance when Mark Oswald broke, and in the semifinals, a 5.79/256.41 beat a tire-smoking Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." In the final, he ran his historic 5.80/260.11 to win over John Collins' 5.92/245. This was the last 260 mph run he would make this season as well as his only NHRA win of '84. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.88/254.23 qualified #2, and he lasted until round two, where McEwen's 5.87/245 put the Tempo's 6.04/245 on the trailer. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Kenny qualified #1 with a 5.78/255.68. He made it into the final where he ran 5.80/254.23 for the runner-up spot to Billy Meyer's 5.73/252. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships and ran well, but failed to make the finals. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified fourth in the field and lost in the second round when he smoked to tires and lost to Meyer. He lost in the first round, at the IHRA Springnationals where he qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field with a 5.83/250. Once again, he smoked the tires, this time losing to Sherm Gunn in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.84/252.10, but in the first round, smoked the tires and lost to Gunn. At the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, a 5.96/252.80 qualified #12, but once again, he lost early. Things went better the following week (July 8) at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he won by beating Don Prudhomme in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.78/249. In the opening round, his 5.99/205 beat Scott Kalitta and a second-round 5.77/251 beat a tire-smoking Tim Grose. He got a bit of a holeshot in the semifinals that saw his 5.81/255.68 beat Jim Head's slightly quicker 5.80/257. A final round 5.81/257.87 beat the "Snake's" 5.89/236. At Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.79, but broke a reverser after his burnout in the semifinals. This gave eventual winner Beadle a single into the final. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he again made it as far as the semis before losing. On August 5, Kenny won his second IHRA event, the Summernationals at Edgewater Park near Cincinnati. He beat Oswald in the final with a 5.80/255.68 to Mark's 5.84/251. Mark got one back at the next race, the NHRA Northstar Nationals at Brainerd, where he stopped Bernstein in the semifinals. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.73/249.89, but he failed to reach the finals. The Budweiser King team had made enough points in qualifying at NHRA national events to be able to run in the Big Bud Shootout at Indianapolis. It was an eight-car affair and in the first round, Kenny's 5.95/247.93 beat Dale Pulde's 5.97/246. In the semifinals, his 5.91/252.10 lost to McEwen's 5.84/254. For the running of the NHRA US Nationals, Kenny qualified for the field with a 5.78/257.14 (#7). He beat a tire-smoking Gunn in the first round, with a 5.91 and in round two, a 5.84/249.30 beat Meyer who also smoked the tires. In the semifinals, a 5.74/250.69 advanced when Frank Hawley got out of shape in the "Chi-Town Hustler" and almost smacked the guardrail. In the final, he had problems and slowed to a 15.24/50.81 that lost to Head's 5.96/254. A week later, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals, where once again he ran well, but failed to reach the finals. Best NHRA ET was a 5.747 in round 3 at Indy. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Qualified on the bump at 2006 US Nats at 5.809. We need to confirm these best times for 2006. Ran identical 5.531 at Ennis Fall 87. Drag Racing List has 5.686/261.62 in the 86/87 issue. | Head started the '86 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 5.90/247.93. In the first round his 5.93/257.14 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86/245. Jim attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.16/205.47 failed to make the field. Atlanta held an eight-car show early in the year and Jim qualified #5 with a 6.39/188.28. Unfortunately, on his qualifying pass, the blower let go and it tore up the tinwork in the Firenza. He was unable to run and alternate Steve Hodkinson replaced him in eliminations. The car was fixed in time for Gainesville and the running of the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #11 with a 5.89/253.52. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he ran 5.91/250.41 to qualify #10. He beat Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round, and in round two, both he and Paul Smith smoked the tires with Jim's 6.22/248.48 getting the win. In the semifinals, Johnny West, driving the "Hawaiian," fouled against him, so he motored into the final with an 8.38/108.93. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch and although both ran 6.00 (Head at 250.13), Ed got the win. Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals was NHRA's next stop and Head was there, qualifying #8 with a 5.94/250.97. A first-round 6.07/214.18 beat Jerry Jefferson, but in round two against Billy Meyer, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline. |

Notes: In 73, Foster was still the driver. Burned the car at Martin in August. I think one of these cars went to Chuck Tanko. - Dennis Doubleday | Ran 6.360 (National Record) and 233.76 in winning Gainesville. Reported to have a 520 inch Pink Elephant. Also ran 231.36 at AHRA Beeline. - Danny White | Pat started the year off by winning the second OCIR all-pro race at OCIR, beating Sush Matsubara in the final. He also set Top Speed at 223.32. He followed that up by taking Top Speed honors again at the AHRA Winternationals with a 231.36 run. He failed to make the finals there, however. He qualified #3 with a 6.94 at the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland and then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.63/214.79, taking the win over Ron O'Donnell. He won again on March 18 at the NHRA Gatornationals after qualifying #4 with a 6.489/216.34. Pat ran a 6.472/227.27 in the first round, over Charlie Therwhanger and improved to a 6.360/233.76 in the second round over Dave Condit. A semifinal 6.416/206.42 beat Al Bergler, and a final round 6.371/221.13 beat Don Schumacher's 6.416/233.16. Pat qualified #1 at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham in May with a 6.49/223.88. He singled with a 6.53/196.07 in the first round, when Preston Davis failed to show. A 6.34/227.27 beat Jim Paoli's 6.55/214 in the second round and in the semifinals, a 6.44/225.56 beat Richard Tharp's wheelstanding "Blue Max." In the final, he slowed to a 7.02/194 for runner-up spot to Mike Snively's 6.53/227 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. Pat was runner-up again at the NHRA Springnationals on June 10. He qualified #3 with a 6.66 and improved to a 6.61/226.13 while beating Tom McEwen in the first round. Another 6.61 at 217.91 in round two beat Larry Arnold and a 6.74/220.58 in the semifinal beat Don Prudhomme's off pace 7.34/144. Foster slowed to a 7.01/216.86 that was second best in the final to Dave Beebe's 6.71/221. Pat set Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 6.54, but he lost early there. On July 4, Englishtown held an eight-car show. Pat set Low ET with a 6.36/209.79, beating Jimmy King in the first round. A semifinal 6.67/223.88 set Top Speed as well, but he lost to Lew Arrington's 6.68/218. At the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.47/227 qualified #3. He ran well, getting into the final by beating Paoli in the semis with a 6.74/224.43. In the final, he lost a close race with his 6.78/223.32 falling to Leroy Goldstein's 6.74/214 in the Candies and Hughes car. He ran at Maple Grove on July 25 for their All-American Funny Car race. Unfortunately, he lost oil pressure in the first round, giving Harlan Thompson a single into the second round. More bad luck hit when he raced at the fifth annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. He beat Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round, but blew a motor doing it and was done for the day. Things started going better at the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pat qualified #3 with a 6.98. He set Top Speed at 220.58 and made his way into the finals by running a 6.87/219.51 single in the semifinals when Tharp's parachute fell off on the line. In the final, he once again grabbed a runner-up spot when his 6.66 narrowly lost to Paoli's 6.65. In August, AHRA held its National Challenge race and a 6.53/212.76 qualified Pat #2. He made it into round three of the 32 car field before running a 7.36/154 that lost to Dale Pulde's 6.63/200 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. The following week it was off to Indy for the NHRA Nationals where a 6.39/226.70 qualified #5. Going up against Tharp in the first round, he fouled. This high dollar car was running well, but it seemed like every time the money was on the line some bad luck would step in. In September, Foster did get a win at the NHRA WCS Points Race at Englishtown. His Low ET 6.28 was good for a new track record and he set Top Speed at 231. A final 6.37/229.59 beat Jim Liberman's 6.59 for the title. Another win followed at the IHRA US Open. There, he beat Larry Fullerton, Shirl Greer, and Billy Meyer before stopping Dale Emery for the money. At the IHRA Nationals at Lakeland on October 14, a 6.69 qualified #1, but a first-round 6.94/174 lost to Colson's 6.86/209. | Beat Jungle Jim at an August match race at Englishtown. Ran bests of 6.27/227. |

Notes: The Akins and Hardcastle Stinger II, driven by Gary Southern, was a Chrysler-powered, direct drive, tube-framed Kellison Astra kit car. Neither fish nor fowl, it ran in the funny car classes, the sports car classes, and the fuel altered classes. This car was one of the reasons that NHRA when they instituted the Funny Car classes, specified "Production Bodies only." Hardcastle held the CC/FD record. |

Notes: The Grand Am was getting a repaint by Bill Carter before the start of the season. While the team did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, Pulde qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.35/222.77. He beat Mike Mitchell in the first round, with a 6.44/217.39, but in round two, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.79/79.29 in a loss to Dale Emery's 6.46/223 in the "Jeg's" Camaro. Early in March, he was at Amarillo for a best of three match against Gene Snow. The Pontiac won all three races with times of 6.80,6.71 and 6.76. Snow was not far off as his best was 6.72. Pulde's best speed was 203. The team also did not race at the NHRA Gatornationals. On March 23, the M/T car was at Irwindale's Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car field, and Pulde's 6.66 qualified #6. He the Leroy Goldstein, who was driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite, had a really close first-round battle that saw Dale's 6.93/215.82 defeat Leroy's similar,6.93/210. He slowed to 7.08/191.89 in a loss to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.69/217 in the "Lil Demon" in the semifinal. He won the Seattle Opener in April, stopping Twig Zeigler's 6.48/219 in the final with a 6.49/220. In June, Pulde was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #11 and an off-pace 7.42/157.61 in the opening round lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.61/192. The following week (June 14), he was at Byron's Manufacturer's Meet. It wasn't a good outing. His 6.85/191.08 fell to Tom McEwen's 6.86/201 in the first round, and in the second, the car caught fire in his race against Denny Savage. A valve cover gasket had failed, and oil got onto the headers causing the fire. Dale got it stopped ok, and there was little damage other than scorched paint. Not long after that, he was in Connecticut for an eight-car show. A 6.73/209.30 beat Fred Goeske's 6.90/210 in the opening round, but the car broke and could not run after that. They did not run at either the NHRA Summernationals or the Grandnationals, but they were at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Pulde ran 6.44/220.04 to qualify #7. Despite improving to 6.36/220.04 in round one, he lost to Pat Foster's 6.31/221 in John Lombardo's Vega. The next stop was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. Until this time, the car was not setting the world on fire as far as its performance went, but this race changed all that. Dale ran 6.38/224.43 to qualify #6. In the first round, he improved a bit, running 6.33 at just 201.79 to beat Pickett's 6.87/175. Everything changed in round two; his outstanding 6.16/233.76 (Low ET and Top Speed) dumped Don Prudhomme's 6.49/178. This changed everything for Shirl Greer, who had been fighting with Prudhomme for the points championships. Pulde's beating the "Snake" gave Greer the hard-fought title. In the semifinal, Dale banged out another stout number, a 6.17/233.76, but he was late off the line, and he finished second best to Dave Condit's 6.19/226 in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. Condit would go on to win the race. A week later (October 20), Pulde went to Fremont for its National Open. It was an eight-car field. The M/T Pontiac was running well there as well as he set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round with his 6.38/228.21 beating Prudhomme's 6.41. Beating the "Snake" two weeks in a row was pretty much unheard of. Pulde lasted to the final, where he was to face Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. But Dale had a supercharger explosion on the line, and Garten won the rave with a 6.61. Irwindale held its Team Funny Car Championships the next week, and Pulde ran well. A 6.42/205 beat Snow in the opening round. He then lost to Tom Hoover in his second race. Garten fouled against him in his third race. Set new world record for funny cars at 1974 Supernationals / World Finals at Ontario: 6.16/233.76. - RT | Yellow, red, black versions. Also was painted in red this season (raced at Indy '74 in that livery). - CS | Ran 6.44 at Fremont, 6.35 at Pomona, 6.36 at Indy. |

Notes: Monster 5.973/245.23 statement in round one, of the US Nationals over Pat Foster's 6.13. Dominant performance throughout, but Don dropped three tenths in the final, and Tom McEwen earned an emotional victory. Also 241.28 at 78 Summers and 240.64 at Springs. Third qualifier at Winters at 6.177/240.67. Won at Fremont over Ivo on 3/08/78 to repeat their Winters final, 6.15/234.37 to 6.25/230.17. Prudhomme had a new Arrow built for the '78 season. It was built by Pat Foster and Jim Hume of H&H Racecraft. The biggest difference between the Arrow and the '77 car was the new torsion bar front suspension. The old version used a solid front end. Foster stated, "Other than that, the car will just be a little lower and a little slipperier than last year's car." Don started his season on the right track by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He "only" qualified #5 with a 6.83 (traction was bad!). A pick-up of two-tenths in the first round, saw his 6.63/227 beat Bryan Raines' 7.34. His 6.65/228.42 (Top Speed) beat low qualifier Tripp Shumake in the second round. Don's 6.60 in the semifinals sent John Collins home, and a final round 6.61/227.27 beat Gene Snow for the title. As if that wasn't enough of a good way to start the year, he did it again at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 6.17/240.67 (Top Speed) qualified #3. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.30/236.22 beat Ed McCulloch. Snow had problems in the second round against him and the "Snake" advanced with a 6.56/205. He faced his buddy, Tom McEwen, and the "Mongoose" smoked his tires in the semifinals while Don ran 6.41/229. Prudhomme raced another old friend in the final," TV Tommy" Ivo. Unfortunately for Ivo, his car broke in the final, and Don soloed for the win with a 6.36/234.98. He looked well on his way to win a third major race at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Championships. Only one driver had out-qualified Prudhomme at the first two events, and he did it again at Beeline. Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow, qualified #1 at every race, and he did so again; his 6.23/232 got the pole while Don's 6.24/239.36 (Top Speed) followed close behind. These two would work their way into the final. Don ran 6.48, 6.56, and 6.86. Tripp had the edge, and both overpowered the track in the final, but Shumake recovered first with his 6.75/218, picking up the victory over Prudhomme's shut-off 8.91/114.00. Gainesville was the next stop on the calendar, and this time Don qualified #1 with a 6.23 (Low ET) at 238.09. A 6.52/221.13 beat Tom Anderson's 6.81/202 in the first round, followed by a 6.42/232.55 that topped Gary Burgin's 6.71/201. But a funny thing happened in the semifinal, the "Snake" got beat! Eventual winner Dale Pulde ran 6.37/236 to put Don's 6.54/212.76 on the trailer. Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.00/239.36 in qualifying #1 for the Bakersfield March Meet. In round one, he ran 6.13/234.98 to stop Jake Johnston's 6.66, but in the second round, a quick-leaving McCulloch stole a 6.09/231 to 6.07/234.37 win from the "Snake." Don skipped racing the NHRA Division Seven race held at Fremont on April 2 to go to Long Beach and race at a celebrity road race. He finished third in the 20-mile race behind Gordon Johncock and Dan Gurney. He then went to Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. His 6.30/228.4 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.19 in the first two rounds of eliminations before really getting on it and running Low ET and Top Speed in the final at 6.11/238.09 to beat McEwen's 6.18/217 for the victory. The following week (May 13), he won the NHRA Division Seven race at OCIR. He qualified #1 with a 6.08/240.64. An opening round 6.04/240.64 beat Shumake's 6.38/231. Don set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.00/242.58 that took out Dave Hough's 6.35/230 in the "Super Shops" car. A final round 6.04/242.58 (Top Speed) beat Henry Harrison's 6.37/229 for the title. | At the Seattle National Open, Prudhomme ran an experimental, after dark 6.56. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1979. Don was trying to get his fifth straight NHRA Funny Car Championship in '79. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #4 with a 6.13. But in the first round, he fell off to 6.32 at 201 and lost to Billy Meyer's 6.18/241. At Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener, he qualified #1 but lost early to Pat Foster. The season was not starting so well for the "Snake." Things went better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals in March. A track record 6.15 at 243.90 qualified #1, and he beat Bob Pickett in the opening round. In round two, his 6.31/236 beat Meyer's 6.37/236. Unfortunately, he went up in smoke in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. Surprisingly, Don did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the Springnationals. He qualified poorly (#13) with a 6.29/236.22, but he picked up to 6.21/228.42 in the first round, to beat Meyer's 6.68/170. In round two, Prudhomme's 6.31/222.22 lost to Al Segrini's 6.20/226. He did not run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.09/240.64. But in round one, he was late off the line, and his 6.26 lost to Ron Colson's 6.28 in the "Hawaiian." He made a trip to Martin, Michigan, for the NHRA Division 3 race. Don qualified #2 with a 6.08, just behind Gary Burgin's 6.07. These two would meet in the final. Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed during eliminations with a 6.02/240.00. In the final, a 6.16/236.84 gave him the victory over Burgin's 6.30/215. He showed up at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in early July. He had the only Funny Car there, and he singled for the win. He also stopped off at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Don qualified #1 at 6.26 and then ran 6.24/231.95 and 6.23/234.37 to reach the final. His final-round opponent was Dale Pulde driving the "War Eagle," who had run Low ET at 6.12 during eliminations. Don smoked the tires and slowed to a 6.85/178.21 runner-up finish to Pulde's 6.28/236. He then went to US 131 and won their Funny Car Nationals. Prudhomme had run as well as 6.10/237.46 before stopping Frank Oglesby in the final. Another win came at the PHR Championships. In the final, his 6.24/228 beat Pete Williams driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." The wins kept stacking up as he then won the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.21/234.98 qualified #3. The first-round saw him pick up to 6.12 over Roy Harris' 6.35. A semifinal 6.19 took out Burgin's 6.40. The final was against Pulde, and this time the "Snake" reversed the outcome of the PHR meet by winning with a 6.63 over Pulde's 6.69 in a tire-smoking battle. He didn't run so well at Byron, where he lost to Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car in the first round. But he really showed them up in Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Don reset the NHRA ET record to 5.95 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 245.23. A first-round 6.18/215 beat Pulde, but the car went into a wheelstand in round two, and Prudhomme had to shut off against Colson. Shortly after that, he was at Jackson County Sports Park for the NHRA Division 6 Final. He made it into the final only to lose to Raymond Beadle's 6.16/237 in the "Blue Max" with a 6.36/195.50. Going into Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Beadle held a 324 point lead over Prudhomme for the championship. Don had to act fast. He qualified #2 at Seattle with a 6.08/243.24. A first-round 6.13/226.70 advanced over a tire-smoking Kosty Ivanof. Meyer also smoked the tires against him in round two, and Don's 6.32/215.82 moved into the semifinals. There he was upset by Jim Dunn. Jim had been running really well, and in the semis, his 6.17/223 beat Prudhomme who dropped a couple of cylinders at 6.26/223.88. Don had to watch as Beadle went on to win the race. He got some payback at the Winston Challenge race held at Fremont on September.30. Both he and Beadle made up the Funny Car final. It was close as the "Snake" had run 5.99/242.58 in his semifinal race while the "Max" had run 5.98. It was close, but Don's starting line advantage got him the win with his 6.07/236.22 narrowly beating Beadle's 6.06 at the same speed. That was the last highlight of the year as at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Don was off-pace. He only qualified #11 with a 6.43/227.84, and in the first round, his 6.85/229.59 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.53/229. Still, most was happy with a season like this, and he maintained his hold on the second spot in the NHRA points. | At NHRA Seattle, Snake and his Arrow appeared at the JC Penny Firestone behind the mall. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Billy qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced Don Prudhomme in the first round, and his 6.18/241 beat the "Snake's" 6.32/201. Meyer lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in round two. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.28/241.28, and in the first round, his 6.35/239.36 beat Dale Pulde who smoked the tires, but a 6.37/236 in round two lost to Prudhomme's 6.31/236. He failed to qualify at the rain postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/241.93 qualified #5, but an off pace 6.68/170.45 in the opening round lost to Prudhomme's 6.21/228. Billy ran really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Although he "only" qualified #4 in the eight-car field, he made it into the final, where his 6.51 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.86 for the money. Earlier, Meyer had set a 231.36 track speed record. The following week (July 8), he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Amarillo. He did not run as well as he was used to at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.25/239.36 qualified #12, and he went down to Beadle in the first round. |

Notes: In Jan, Johnson was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.83/245.23. He was up against Paul Smith driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the first round. Rick went into some hard tire shake and shut off. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85. |

Notes: Bonin debuted his new Monza at Beeline for the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #4 with a 6.40/223.88 and lasted until the second round where his 6.86/181.81 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.31/231. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #7 with a 6.25/221.13. Bonin beat Twig Zeigler's 6.61/216 in the opening round with a 6.35/212.76, but in round two, he got crossed-up and shut off against Tom Prock who advanced with a 6.27/212. He competed at the OCIR East vs. West Meet and then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He did really well there, beating Neil Leffler driving the Keeling and Clayton Mustang and setting Top Speed of the meet for FCs in the semifinals at 226.70 while beating Jim Dunn. He lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. He failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Another runner-up finish came at Firebird Raceway's Funny Car Championships in April. He had Low ET at 7.00 on the slippery track and in the final lost to Ed McCulloch's 7.69/212 with a quicker 7.58/210.69. | Gordie ran 6.59 at the NHRA Summernationals and 6.34/225.44 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/76. |

Notes: The "Chi-Town" bunch needed a new driver for '80 as their driver, Pete Williams, left at the end of '79. Austin Coil contacted Simon Menzies for the job, but Simon was unable to tour, so he recommended Frank Hawley. Coil decided to give Frank a try. Hawley went to Chicago to audition for the job, and his first race was to be a best of three match against Kenny Safford at US 30, Gary, Indiana. He won the match three straight. Since he still didn't have a fuel funny car license, Safford was the first to sign his license. After this, Hawley asked Coil if he had the job. Austin replied, "for another week." This continued for the next two years until they won the NHRA World Championship in '82. Then he was hired. The team ran at Union Grove a lot. Frank made it into the semifinals at the Olympics of Drag Racing in May before losing to Don Prudhomme. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove, Hawley finished runner-up to Tom Hoover. The team attempted to qualify at the PHR Championships, but a best of 6.56 left them as the seventh alternate for the show. |

Notes: AMAZING 5.63/244.56 shut-off run at Indy this year, plus 5.73/252.80 NHRA best speed. First Funny Car to run 250.00 at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on 5/29/1982 (initial entry into the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Cars). Also, 247.25 at 82 Southerns. Credited with 255 mph run at AHRA Gary, which was probably more like 245. | Don made one of the most incredible runs in Funny Car history at Indy. This came in a year when he switched from Mopar bodied cars to a GM for the first time since '76. He had won twice in '81 and switched to a Firebird for the '82 season. He started the season at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. A track record 6.34 qualified #1, and he made his way to the final by running 6.43 over Johnny West and 6.34 to beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. Prudhomme was upset in the final by Ed Moore, who had earlier reset both ends of the track record with 6.21/232.54 times. He ran 6.03/242.58 for the #4 spot at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. An off pace 6.31/185.95 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.11/243 in the first round. Things were even worse at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Don's best of 6.19/231.60 failed to qualify. The NHRA Southern Nationals was held in Atlanta in April, and it featured an eight-car Funny Car field. It was a tough show to qualify in, but Don's 6.13/244.56 got in on the "bump" spot. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Frank Hawley's 6.09/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week (May 2), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. Don won the race there, beating Tom Hoover and John Force to reach the finals. In the final, he beat upstart Tom Hovland's 6.46/222 with a 6.31/238.72. On May 29, Don ran 6.00/250.00 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. The first 250 mph run by a Funny Car made him the fifteenth NHRA driver to top 250 and the first to do it in a Funny Car. The time qualified him first in the eight-car show. The race was run on May 30, and Don ran well but ended up as the runner-up. He beat John Pott in Larry Coogle's car in the first round, with a 6.10/242. In the semifinals, another 6.10 at 246 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. But in the final, he came up against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." The two left together, but Beadle's 6.08/239 beat the "Snake's" 6.13/247.25 for the win. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Don set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.13, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.34 that lost to Hovland's 6.33. He qualified #1 again the following week at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.92 (Low ET) at a track record speed of 248.61 got him the pole. He fell off to a 6.20/241.93 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat Tim Grose's 6.31/216. He lost to Kenny Bernstein in round two. It was around this time that a few cars started running nitrous. Meyer was one of them, and he had run over 254 at Norwalk. Bob Brandt took a look in that direction. AHRA held its Summernationals at Kansas City, and once again, Don got the pole with a track record 5.97 at 244.56. A 6.03/229.00 beat Jim White in round one, while a semifinal 6.10/196.50 advanced to the final when Ron Correnti failed to fire. In the final, he met old foe, Burgin. Don had problems and shut down to 7.10/130.81 while Gary motored to the victory at 5.99/234. The next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The "Snake" qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.03/245.90 (Top Speed). This is where he got his first NHRA victory in the Firebird. Prudhomme advanced past round one when Beadle broke a rear-end while a semifinal 5.91 (Low ET) at 244.56 beat Hawley who smoked the tires. The final turned out to be a rematch right down to the winner as the '81 event. It was Bernstein against Prudhomme, and Don prevailed with a 6.03/245.23 over Kenny's 6.13/233. And just as he had done in '81, he went out and won the NHRA Summernationals as well. Meyer was the performance leader, but Don wasn't running too badly, qualifying #6 with a 5.96/248.61. He beat Murf McKinney, Beadle, and Bernstein to reach the finals, where he faced Mike Dunn. The "Snake" was not to be denied his 34th NHRA career victory, running 6.00/241.28 over Mike's 6.15/237 in the "Hawaiian." On June 27, he was at Brainerd for the US Funny Car Championships. He was upset in the first round, by Steve Gladieux. | 5.89 251.96 beating Tom McEwen, 5.944 226.30 in the semis, 5.901 255.45 AHRA US 30 1982 to win over Gary Burgin's 6.061 in the finals. Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White |
