Notes: In 1965, funny cars were gaining popularity across the country. A lot of drag racers and fans alike regarded the funny car and FX cars as "circus" acts and not real race cars. The car that changed a lot of peoples' opinions on funny cars was Mr. Norm's Grand-Spaulding Dodge. When Norm Kraus and Gary Dyer brought the former Roger Lindamood factory-altered wheelbase car to Lions in 1965, the team was unknown outside the Midwest. Dyer then ran 8.63 at Lions, and it went down as one of the great runs in history. The other new funny cars had just broken into the eights. This run and the many victories put Gary Dyer into the headlines. Car sold to Chris Fairly in 1966, repossessed by Norm Kraus and sold to a new owner in Texas. (Photo from Gary Dyer. Info from Gary Dyer and James Ibusuki.) | 1965 acid-dipped A/FX (former Roger Lindamood Color Me Gone) - Gary Dyer | Dyer was an 8.630. - Bret Kepner, 7/23 |

Notes: After driving for Mickey Thompson for several seasons, Pickett went on his own in 1979. Bob was at the AHRA Winternationals but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 at 6.229/233.16, but he broke against Tom Prock in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at 6.330/229.59, meaning he had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. Sure enough, the "Snake" beat him, 6.44/228 to 6.650/221.13. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.40/233.76. A 6.55/222.77 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.36/234 in round one. Bob qualified #11 at Columbus at 6.27/228.42 and lost to Tom Hoover in round one, 6.33/231 to 14.59/50. Bob qualified #13 at Englishtown at 6.25/232.55 and again had issues in round one, falling to Jim Adolph, 6.28/231 to 11.86. Bob qualified on the bump at Indy at 6.130/230.76, but round one blues set in again, and Pat Foster took a 6.25/235 to 11.22/72 decision. Bob was the fifth alternate at the Ontario Finals (no time reported, but no quicker than 6.56). |

Notes: Dale was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.465/274.39 to qualify #11. He improved to a 5.366/269.70 to beat Tom Hoover's close 5.37/275 in the first round. In round two, he ran 5.378/268.97 over Art Hendey's 5.66/225. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.89/235. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Dale ran 5.386/270.51 to qualify #7. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.335/262.39 to 5.43/263, and in the second round, his 5.329/268.81 beat Hoover's 5.47/266. Pulde moved into the final by getting around John Force in the semifinals. It was a close race as both drivers ran 5.33 (Dale at 5.330/260.86, John at 5.334/274), but the "In-N-Out Burger" car got the win. In the final, Dale was up against the '89 NHRA Champ, Bruce Larson. Bruce had problems and shut off while Pulde motored to a 5.371/266.27 for the victory. The team also ran at Sonoma (5.665/262.46 Q16 and a first-round loss to Larson, 5.30/276 to 5.672/247.04), Seattle (5.703/262.92 Q15 and a first-round loss to Jim White, 5.44/262 to 7.30/112), and the Pomona Finals (5.672/261.39 second alternate). |

Notes: Jim Robbs of RFI backed the car. After driving for Mike Burkhart, Mart Higginbotham stepped out on his own for '71 with this Ramchargers Hemi-powered Vega. Don Long built the 118" chassis, and the body came from J&E. The engine used M/T rods and pistons and a Crower cam. A 30% overdriven Air Research blower sat on a Cragar manifold, and the 80% nitro was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The power was transferred to the 5.14 Detroit Locker rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. | This was Mart's most successful season. It was a welcome change after attempting to run the Chevy engine with little success in '70. The new car took a little time to come around, but that was expected. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he did much better at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.20 qualified #5 among the "seeded" entries, and an easy 7.60 in the opening round got around a crossed-up Gary Densham. He improved to 7.03/195.22 in an all-Vega battle with Tom Prock in round two and a third-round 6.90/204.54 beat Don Schumacher's 7.01/198. His run ended in the semifinals, where Gene Snow unleashed Low ET and Top Speed (6.84/214) on him. Higginbotham's next good run came at the NHRA Gatornationals. There he qualified #6 with a 7.03. A 7.05 in round one, advanced when Bill Flynn's car lost fire. Mart really picked up in round two, running a 6.82/205.94 over Leonard Hughes' 6.92, but a semifinal 7.17 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.02 in the "Super Duster." He then went to West Palm Beach for the third AHRA Grand American race. Mart qualified #1 with a 6.82 (Low ET) at 208.80. He then ran a 7.21 "odd-lot" solo. Round two saw Higginbotham's 6.96/199.54 turn back Dick Harrell's 7.36/200, and in the semifinals, his 6.94 beat Dale Pulde in the Mickey Thompson Pinto. In the final, he was to face Snow, but Snow's two-speed transmission broke, so Mart soloed for the win with a 6.97/208.80. Until this time, the car had been running a stock-stroke 426, but after this race, Mart also went the stroker route and his times improved to 6.66/217. He was running a lot of match races with the car, and on May 8, he was at Wichita for a best of three against Dave Condit's "L. A. Hooker." Unfortunately, Mart lost that match. Shortly after that, he was at Lebanon Valley for an eight-car show where he finished runner-up to Gary Bolger. On May 23, AHRA held its Southern Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. Art ran really well, hitting a first-round 6.96/203.60 over Vic Cecelia in Charlie Proite's ailing Challenger. A second-round 7.09/169.17 beat John Dekker, but a troubled 7.68/161.87 in the semifinals lost to eventual winner Snow's 6.98/203. The following week (May 28), he won over a sixteen-car field at US 30. A final round 6.76 beat Tom Hoover's 6.96 for the victory. Mart lost early at Baton Rouge for the AHRA Grand American held there on June 6. It was then off to Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. It was a tough field to get into. Mart sat on the "bump" on Saturday with a 7.23, but he improved to a 7.09 to stay in the show. But in the first round, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline against Henry Harrison, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang. He stopped off at Blaney for a best of three match against Warren Gunter's "Durachrome" VW. Mart won all three races and ran the track's first "six," a 6.97. |

Notes: This was the Beaver brothers' second Funny Car. The car was built by S&R Race Cars (Steve Plueger & Richard Conklin), and the wheelbase was 118 inches. Riveren Plastics made the Maverick body. The engine was a stock-sized 426 Hemi from Keith Black. A stock stroke Reath crank, M/T rods, and Forgedtrue pistons were used. Engle supplied the cam. Reath also did the cylinder heads. Cragar was used for the blower drive, and manifold and Don Hampton prepared the blower. An Enderle injection unit sat up top. The transmission was a Lenco two-speed, and the rear was a Ford with 4.30 gears. Kenny Youngblood did the lettering, and Don Kirby applied the enamel paint. The car cost $12,500 to build, and its best early run was 6.84/217. Was that the OCIR 216.86 from March? | Dave qualified at the first OCIR All-Pro race in Jan but broke and was not able to run in eliminations. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals on February 7, a 7.23/205.47 qualified #13. He lost to Larry Reyes in the first round. He was at Beeline on February 21 for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.39 qualified for the show, but once again, he lost in the first round to Gordon Mineo. Condit ran well at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He beat Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto in the first round, and in round two, a 7.13 beat Butch Maas in the "Hawaiian." Another 7.13 in the semifinal beat low qualifier Rich Siroonian's 7.20 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. In the final, his 7.17/204.08 finished runner up to Jim Dunn's 6.99/212. OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and Dave qualified #1 with a 6.98. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round when he beat Pulde's 7.20/206 with a strong 6.87/216.86. Unfortunately, the Maverick broke in the semifinal giving eventual winner Gene Conway a solo into the final. On March 20, Lions held an eight-car show. Dave got out of shape in the first round and shut off to an 8.45 loss to Randy Walls' 7.04. The last OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27 and featured a sixteen-car Funny Car field. Dave ran 6.99/213.77 to beat Cliff Zinc's 7.43 in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car in the first round, but in the second round, he lost fire on the line against Gene Snow. On April 11, at Seattle for the Northwest National Open, he got a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme's on fire, up on two wheels run of 6.94. While everyone was watching the "Snake's" amazing run, Dave's runner-up effort of 6.98/215.30 wasn't bad. Early in May, he was at Wichita, where he won a best of three match race over Mart Higginbotham. |

Notes: Although Tom Hoover started the 1971 season in his 1970 Challenger, he had this Charger built for the new season. Just like his last car, the new one used an RCE chassis. This one had a 120" wheelbase It was built in less than two months. It used a Halibrand Quick-change rear with 5.12 gears as well as a Lenco two-speed transmission. Keith Black supplied the stroked late model Hemi. A 33% overdriven Air Research blower sat on a Cragar manifold. M/T rods and Forged True pistons were used along with a Crower cam. The body was by Ed Wills. Hoover won AHRA St. Louis 71 in this machine. He also ran the car at NHRA Indy and Ontario. Tom was the sixth alternate at Indy with a 7.050/210.28. He qualified #12 at Ontario with a 7.027/206.42. In round one, he lost to Don Schumacher, 6.90/212 to 7.22/200.89. |

Notes: Day ran IHRA PHR Martin MI 1986 | In 1986, Norm came out with a new Corvette FC. His first NHRA National event with it was at Brainerd. In round one he was racing Tim Grose when his engine exploded just past the finish line. It was one of the worst Funny Car fires of that year. The chutes burned off and Norm hit the ditch where the car flipped and he was trapped inside. The safety crew had to punch a hole in the side of the car to get him out. Fortunately, Norm escaped with minor burns, but the car was destroyed. I posted a clip of it from ND. He stopped the timers with a 6.06/238.72 on the unfortunate pass. In qualifying, his 6.37/229.59 was #15 for the show. |

Notes: In January, Hoover started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was driving his new Firebird Trans Am. It was an eight-car field, and he ran 5.91/227.27 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.97/238.09 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.95/238. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.68/252.31. In the first round, both Hoover and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car ran 5.76 (Hoover at 229.65), but Oswald won. On March 15, Tom was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 5.81/248.61 (Top Speed). He advanced to the final, where he faced Jim Head. In the final, he slowed to 6.01/228, which lost to Jim's 5.66 track record pass. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.68/254.16. Once again, Hoover lost in round one, when Kenny Bernstein's 5.58/261 beat his 5.73/252.88. He didn't race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. Hoover was back in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.76/254.38 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 5.99/233.34 advanced when Tom McEwen exploded a supercharger. In the second round, his 5.88/231.36 lost to McCulloch's 5.66/260. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lost to Oswald in the first round. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as it was postponed one week due to rain and run on May 31, the same day Tom was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tom sold the car to Gary Page in England. Tom ran a confirmed 260.94 at Englishtown 87. Where was the 264 run? He went 5.87/234 at the AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Update on "264 run" He ran that in his #1 Qualifying performance at Ennis during the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge on 8/1/87 with a 5.592 ET. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: The roof was blown off this car late in 1969 at Irwindale. | On May 17, for an eight-car show at Irwindale, Dave qualified #1 with a 7.67. In the first round, he beat Gas Ronda (8.21/185.18) with Low ET and Top Speed of 7.62/200.00. Both he and Mike Van Sant broke in the semifinal, with Van Sant crossing the line first. The Invader couldn't repair, so Dave was reinstated to run Rich Siroonian in the final. A holeshot win by Siroonian at 7.79/190.26 beat Beebe's 7.77/196.06. Another eight-car field at Irwindale on May 30 saw Ronda's 7.81/185.18 beat Dave in the first round. The next day at OCIR for the Funny Car 500, he qualified second with a 7.56/199.11 but broke a rear in the first round. He faced off against Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian at Irwindale on June 21. Reyes' 7.62/180 beat his 7.70/194.38 in the first race, but a 7.63/197.36 beat the Hawaiian's 7.93/182.92 in the second race. So for the tiebreaker, Beebe ran a 7.59/201.34 but lost to Reyes 7.65/189.46. On July 4, he showed up at Irwindale in John Mazmanian's Cuda. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Also 7.61 at Mission. Kenny Goodell qualified his Challenger #15 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 7.261/198.23. He nearly matched that time in the first round, with a 7.291/200.00 win when Don Schumacher broke a rear end. In round two, he slowed to 7.449/196.50 a loss to Larry Arnold's 7.381/196.50. |

Notes: This was one of the cars chosen to run the Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour for '76. Dave was a DNQ at NHRA Pomona, but he ran really well at OCIR's Fox Hunt race in March. 27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field, and his 6.38 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He did appear in the final at Sacramento's Funny Car race later in the month. But he lost to Russell Long. Dave qualified #16 at the NHRA World Finals at 6.450/218.97. He lost to Rick Johnson in round one, 6.32/227 to 7.23/140. |

Notes: Tim qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.10/226.13. In the first round of eliminations, a 6.21/218.96 lost to Raymond Beadle's 5.97/243 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.17/231.95, and in round one, his 6.26/231.95 beat Craig Epperly's 6.42/227. In round two, a 6.31/230.17 beat John Pott's off pace 6.95/181, and he advanced into the final by running 6.48/226.70 to beat Paul Smith in the semifinals. He met up with the "Chi-Town Hustler" with Frank Hawley doing the handling in the final. Tim had problems and shut down to a 7.53/109.89 while Hawley grabbed the victory with a 6.07/231. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Grose set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 6.10/231.95 but failed to reach the finals. In April, NHRA held its Southern Nationals at Atlanta, and it was a tough field to qualify in as there were only eight spots available. Tim qualified #2 with a 5.93/233.16, but in the first round, he had trouble and slowed to a 6.74/221.67 that lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.49/196. Tim's best NHRA times were the 5.932 at Atlanta and 243.90 at Indy. |

Notes: Qualified at 6.288/230.76 at 78 NHRA Pomona Winternationals. Lost a close 6.420/217.91 to 6.440/233.32 first-round match against Gene Snow. | Foster was at Bonneville for the fourth NHRA Division 7 race. He made it into the final against Henry Harrison, but the Firebird tossed a blower belt, and Harrison got the victory. Did Pat run 6.20 in this car? Also, the 233.32 in a close first-round loss at Pomona was probably 223.32, but we are taking it right off the NHRA lists. He qualified #14 at the Gatornationals at 6.600. Improved to a 6.390/230.76 in round one, but lost to Billy Meyer's 6.370/231.95. At Indy, Foster showed up in the Super Shops car and finished the season in that ride. Joe Pisano did not run any additional NHRA events. Pat was at the OCIR Funny Car Spectacular held on June 10. In the second round, he ran 6.26/244.98 to beat Jeff Courtie's 6.74/206.89. Was that in the Pisano car or the Super Shops car? |

Notes: Gary attempted to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, but a best of 6.411/231.36 failed to make the field. | Pete Jackson injector installed later in '83, Henry Velasco the CC last part of the year. Ran a series of 5.97s/5.99s for early alternate at Indy (ultimately, first alternate at 5.975/245.23), 5.904/238.09 at the '83 Finals with the roof hatch flying off halfway down. (Lost on a holeshot to Denny Savage in round one, (6.188/231.95 to Gary's 6.150/231.95). In January '84, ND reported Densham winning a Sacramento match race win at 6.02/241, with the drive line breaking up, causing injuries. Densham/ND said he "could wear a narrower shoe" after the incident. - Joe Moore | Photo from 1983 US Nationals. |

Notes: Ran 6.34 at Pomona, 6.45 at Gainesville, 6.25 at Columbus, 6.31 at Englishtown, 6.15 at Indy, 6.26 at Detroit, 6.21 at Ontario. | Tom qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," in the first round. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.45 qualified #8, and once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Bob Pickett. He was at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Dale Pulde. Shortly after that, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.98/138. In the first round, he improved to 6.43/223.88 to beat Al Bergler's 6.67/213. A 6.49/203.61 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Pulde who won with a 6.23/235. Tom went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event held in late May. On May 29, 22 cars ran the first-round, with only the four Low ET cars advancing into the semifinals. Prock didn't run quick enough to make the final four. The following day (May 30), they ran again, and this time six cars would advance. Prock almost made it as both he and Denny Savage ran 6.47, but Prock's was a tick slower at 6.476, and once again, he sat out the final eliminations. A week later (June 5), he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There, his 6.50/226.14 qualified #6. He ran 10.10 to advance in the first round, when Pickett lost a driveshaft and, in the semifinals, he ran a good 6.53/213.32, but it wasn't good enough as he lost to the eventual winner Beadle’s 6.46/210. The team's next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/228.42 qualified #10, but Prock lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. A week later (June 19) found the "Detroit Tiger" at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Prock qualified #5 6.62, but he ran a sub-par 6.97 in round one, that lost to Donnie Plunkett's 6.91. He did better at Union Grove on July 4th for the IHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.37 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.63/204.54 beat Shirl Greer's 6.65/199. In the semifinals, Prock's 6.52/206.89 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.34/214. |

Notes: Ron qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.20. In lost to Gordie Bonin's new Firebird in the second round. He won the Sacramento race of Champions. He qualified #13 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his opening round 6.46 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.35. Early in June, Ron was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified third in the eight-car field with a 6.48/222.77. Unfortunately, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his first-round race against Rob Bruins in the "Green Elephant.” Not long after that, the "Hawaiian" was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Colson won his first-round race, but once again he hurts some parts and was unable to make his second round race against Don Prudhomme. The following week (June 18), Colson was at Martin, Michigan’s Funny Car Opener. He made it into the final where his 6.22 finished runner-up to Prudhomme's 6.13. The following day, he was at Byron for the Manufacturer's race. The "Snake" got him again, this time in round two where Ron's 6.42/222 fell to Prudhomme's 6.30/233. He was back at Martin, Michigan, in July for the third NHRA Division 3 race. He reached the final against Billy Meyer only to lose a 6.22/219 to 6.34/218.44 race. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.180 qualified #5. But in the first round, he lost in a tire-smoking battle against McCulloch. His 6.82 lost to the "Ace's" 6.75. Ron and Tommy Ivo were at Edgewater for a best of three match race in August. Each had won one race each and Colson had lowered the track record to 6.31, but the third race between the two was never run. The "Hawaiian" always seemed to run well at the PHR Championships at Martin. In '77, the team did alright. In the qualifying round, Ron’s 6.40 beat Burgin's 6.44 and in the next round, Ron’s 6.52 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.20. He also ran 6.22 at Indy 9/77. Best NHRA national event ET was the 6.180 at Englishtown and 233.16 at the Ontario World Finals. |

Notes: Miller won the inaugural NHRA Le Grandnational Molson in St. Pie, Quebec, topping Phil Castronovo's Custom Body Dodge in the final. He set Low ET and Top Speed for Funny Car at that event with a 7.01/216.86. - Chris Martin, DRO | Miller was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 15. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 6.99/213.27. A semifinal 7.03/215.82 beat Larry Fullerton's 7.29 and moved him into the finals against Phil Castronovo. It was a close race, and Phil had set Low ET in the semifinals with his track record 6.91. A car had blown its engine in the lane that Phil had chosen for the final. The track crew cleaned the track, but Castronovo had his car get out of shape in some leftover residue and publicly criticized NHRA for its clean-up. Nevertheless, Miller ran 7.01/216.86 for the victory while Phil recovered to 7.45 for the runner-up spot. A week later (August 22), these two was in another final round together. This time it came at the Dutch Classic held at Maple Grove. In the opening round, Sam had beat Jim Maybeck with a 6.95/200.44 and a semifinal 7.35/173.41 advanced when Lew Arrington's "Brutus" broke a rear end. Castronovo got some "revenge" for the previous week when he ran 6.94/198 for the win when Miller had a rear-end break on the line. Miller qualified #10 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.81, but he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch in round one. The weekend of September.19 did not go so well for Sam. He was in New England for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32 car field, and in the opening round, his 6.92/200 beat Tom Sneden's 7.02/201. In round two, he faced Arrington, and Miller had his engine let go, and the explosion ripped the body off the chassis. He was OK. |

Notes: Tripp qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.427/268.09. In the first round, he had a blower explode. The car caught fire, and Shumake fought for control, crossing the centerline before bringing it back into his own lane and hitting the guardrail. He got the car stopped, and he was OK. By the time the IHRA Winternationals rolled around in March, the car was fixed. Tripp qualified for the eight-car show and ran 5.56/258.62 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Brad Tuttle. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.44/269.46 when Ed McCulloch broke on the line. In the final, he faced low qualifier, John Force. John fouled, and Tripp took the victory by idling to an 11.10 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.501/264.62 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to R.C. Sherman, 5.83/250 to 6.024/237.65. That was Tripp's last NHRA national event this year. A week later (March 27), he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. A first-round 5.69 lost to Force's 5.64. Photo from Milan, MI, 1988, with Pulde driving. Did Tripp run 5.405 in this car? Formerly listed that time but removed it until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Gene started his '78 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was slick, and it only took a 7.54 to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Snow qualified #6. He ran his best number of the weekend, a 6.66 at 213, in the first round to beat Bill Chappelle, and in round two, a 6.73/216 got around Billy Graham's crossed up Monza. He beat Carl Swanson in the semifinals to go up against Don Prudhomme in the final. Gene smoked the tires to a 7.02/176.41 that finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.61/227. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.413/226.13 qualified #15. An opening round 6.42/217 beat Pat Foster's 6.44/223 in Joe Pisano's car, but an off-pace 7.71/133 lost to Prudhomme's 6.56/205 in round two. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway for a ten-car show. His 6.53/227 advanced over a blower exploding Randy Lackey in the first round. But he lost to Graham in the semifinal. He was back at Green Valley for the second NHRA Division Four race. He set Low ET in qualifying with a 6.22/209.79. In the opening round, a 6.30/222.22 defeated Bob Pickett's 6.46/187. Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him in the semifinal, and Gene's 6.26/215.31 advanced. He faced Graham in the final, and Billy shut off with problems while Snow ran 6.23/218.97 for the victory. In May, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 7.00/200.00 qualified #5. He went up against low qualifier Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in round one. Both smoked the tires, but Snow's 7.36/176.47 won over Beadle's 7.58/143. Snow's 6.88/202.70 beat Graham, who also smoked the tires in the semifinal. He faced Tripp Shumake in the final, and despite running a good (for the track conditions) 6.90/217, Gene finished runner-up to Shumake's 6.79/218. Early in June, he went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Snow's 6.80/195.66 qualified #5 for the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Gene smoked the tires in their race and shut down to 10.86/77.79, while the "Goose" advanced with a 6.48/212. The following week (June 11), he qualified #9 at NHRA Columbus at 6.244/227.27 but lost to Prudhomme in round one, 6.12/239 to 6.200/213.77. His next stop was at Alamo Dragway near San Antonio on June 18 for the AHRA Nationals. Gene's 6.26 (Low ET) at 216 qualified #1. In the opening round, John Collins got crossed up against him, and Snow beat him with a 6.44/195. But in the semifinal, it was Gene who got out of shape, and his 7.76/114 lost to John White's 6.67/196. A pair of wins followed that. First, he won the fourth NHRA Division Four race held at Riverside. He made two solos to reach the final, one over a broken Chip Woodall and the other an "odd-lot" solo due to the short field. In the final, he ran Low ET and Top Speed with his 6.33/194.39 getting the victory over Larry Brown's 6.85/155. Gene then won the AHRA Show-Me Nationals at Kansas City, where he set Low ET as well at 6.27. He almost took another win at the AHRA Ozark Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.51/198.67 that followed McEwen's 6.44/189. Larry Gould's SOHC Ford-powered car caught fire on the line in the first round, and Snow singled with a 6.80/166. Collins got out of shape against him in the semifinal, and Snow advanced at 6.62/200. He faced Graham in the final, and the two had a good, close race that saw Billy's 6.54/205 score the win over Gene's 6.58/191. He qualified #11 at the E-town Summernationals at 6.190/233.11 but lost to McEwen in the first round, 6.22/233 to 6.40/217.39. In August, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. His 6.39/228.42 qualified #4.A 6.52/216 solo advanced in round one when Simon Menzies' brakes failed to hold him on the line. In the semifinal, he lost to eventual winner Beadle. Snow's 6.40/230.78 lost to the "Max's" 6.35/221. Gene was the second alternate at Indy at 6.250/231.95. He then sold the car to Roy Phelps in England. | In late '77, SS&Dl did a photo feature, and next to the left airbrushed headlight was "Rambunctious" in small cursive. - Joe Moore |

Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman was one of the racers chosen to receive one of the Logghe-built Comet Cyclones from Ford Motor Company. Schartman had worked his way up the racing ranks before getting into funny car racing. In 1966, he was one of the top funny car racers with the advanced machines. In 1967, he was already on his third paint job when he received the Air Lift sponsorship. The Air Lift Rattler featured the updated Logghe chassis and kept on winning. With Amos Satterlee tuning, Schartman won the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championship at Orange County with runs of 8.17/184.08, 7.85/185.18 (Low ET), and 7.87/185.56. - BS | 427 SOHC, C-6 auto combo. | Ran 8.65/164 at AHRA Winters on January 29. Eddie first ran a blower late in the year at Fremont's Third Annual exhibition Car Championships in Oct. They ran 30% nitro and beat Ronnie Runyan and Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with an 8.20/179. He won the race beating Terry Hedrick's Corvair in the final with an 8.08 (Low ET). A week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. Eddie won this race, too. He beat Doug Thorley and Roger Lindamood in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, his 7.97/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 8.28/150. Schartman faced Ron O'Donnell in the final, and he set Low ET with a 7.93 at 181.36 to win. He was at Lions in the first week of November for the East-West Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he exploded a blower in the opening round and lost to Leal. He wasn't down and out for long as he then won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. All cars ran three rounds of racing, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. An opening round 8.17/184.04 beat Leal's 8.22/176. His second round 7.85/185.18 won over Thorley, and a 7.87/185.56 in round three assured him a spot in the final. There he faced surprise finalist Roy Gay. - Ron Howard Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67 |
