Notes: Tommy Grove was really getting his act together in '67. Near the end of the season, a supercharger was added to his SOHC motor and the car began to lay down some numbers. On October 22, he was at Fremont for the exhibition Car Championships. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Terry Hedrick. Just a week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. He upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the opening round of eliminations, but he lost in round two. Grove was at Lions on November 4 for the East-West Championships. He got some payback on Hedrick in round two where he beat him with a 7.98. He faced Nicholson in the final and despite running a strong 8.10/167.59 he finished runner-up to "Dyno's" 7.97/174. At OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, Grove went up against Hedrick in his first race and Grove was late off the line. Terry's 8.23/180 held off the Mustang's quicker 8.11/185.90. Notes: The Gerry Glenn driven Plueger and Gyger Mustang was one of the strongest Donovan-powered Funny Cars in '73. Most observers of the sport in '73 felt like the lower end of the Donovan failed to get the heavier Funny Car's off the line as well as it did in the Top Fuel dragsters. This team proved that that wasn't the case. Glenn's driving was good, but it wasn't just his driving that made the team win. The car was able to put down the numbers. He was out of a ride early in '73; in fact, he drove John Lombardo's car at the Bakersfield March Meet. But by May, he was in this ride. He won the Memorial Day Championships at Irwindale over another Donovan-powered FC, Roger Garten's "Warhorse. Both cars smoked the tires in the final, but Glenn's 7.06/191.39 got him the victory. Earlier, he had set Low ET at 6.59. He was runner-up to Bobby Rowe at Sacramento's NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #1 for the 32 car field at the AHRA National Challenge race with a 6.48/214.79. The ET held for Low ET among FCs. "Jungle Jim," Liberman fouled against him in the opening round. In round two, Glenn's off pace 7.40 lost to Billy Meyer's 6.63. He was back at Irwindale for its Back to School race, where he set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.58. A first-round 6.66/204.08 beat Gervase O'Neil, while a tire-smoking 12.60 solo advanced in round two. Gerry's 7.03/201.79 beat Mike Halloran in the semifinals and moved him into the final against Mert Littlefield. These two were taking turns winning at Irwindale, and this time it was Mert's turn as his 6.68/216 got the victory over Glenn's crossed up, shutting off 7.83/141. At OCIR for the AHRA Western Nationals, he made it into the final against Tom McEwen, but the Mustang broke a rear end, giving the "Goose" the win. He qualified surprisingly slow (#15) at the Irwindale Grand Prix race. His troubles continued in the first round, where his 7.65/140.40 lost to Littlefield's 6.97/200. The team's next stop was at Fremont for the AHRA World Championships. It was a tough show as his 6.52 only qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show. A first-round 6.79 beat Dave Uyehara's quicker 6.65, and in round two, Charlie Therwhanger had to shut off on the line, and Glenn took a single. He advanced again in the semifinals when Dale Pulde had to shut Mickey Thompson's Grand Am off on the line for leaking oil. He was to face Ed McCulloch for the money, but the "Ace" had broken while beating Jim Dunn, so Dunn was reinstated on the "break rule" for the final. The race was good, but Jim's 6.61/215 got the measure over Glenn's 6.77/204.04. It was then back to Irwindale for the East-West Funny Car Championships. All cars there ran three rounds of racing. Glenn fouled against Meyer in his first race and then shut off. In his second race, he ran 6.48/211.76 to beat a fouling Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" Vega. In the third race, the Mustang broke at half-track against Littlefield. Gerry also ran 6.56 at Irwindale. |

Notes: Tom qualified #4 at Pomona with his best NHRA speed of the year, 6.320/227.84. He fell off to an 8.93/92 in round one, that fell to Charlie Therwhanger's 6.40/212. Prock qualified #12 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.55/221.13. He reached the final by beating Gordie Bonin in the first round, with a 6.62/224.43, and in round two, he fouled away a 6.68 but got a second chance when his opponent, Kosty Ivanof, crossed the centerline. He stopped Raymond Beadle's 6.78 in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals with a 6.68. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme, but Prudhomme's engine was hurting. So Prock was too single for the win, but his car broke a rear end. Both teams were given extra time to repair. Tom could not repair, so the "Snake" spit and puttered to a 6.52/172 for the victory. His next race was the IHRA Winternationals at Miami-Hollywood. There a 6.56 qualified #4 in the eight-car show, and in the first round, his 6.67 beat Shirl Greer. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinals. He won a best of three match race against Ivanof in New England. In the first race of the match, Prock lost a blower, and Kosty won with a 6.71, but Tom came back to win the next two rounds and the match with a best of 6.74. He was at Atco for the CARS Magazine race, but he lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, when he had problems and shut down to 9.03/130.62. More problems followed at Columbus. Tom qualified #12 for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.56/220.04, but in his first-round race against Dale Emery, the car coughed up its blower and caught fire. Prock got it stopped and got out OK, but the car was badly burned. It wasn't long before the team was up and running again, and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Prock put the car into the field with a 6.55/220.04 (#13). He beat Bob Pickett driving Mickey Thompson's Grand Am in the first round, and a 6.66/222.77 in round two stopped Tom McEwen's 6.86/189. In the semifinals, he ran Ivanof, and a 6.64/210.77 put Kosty's 6.78/222 on the trailer. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and once again, the car let him down. Tom slowed to 11.49 in a runner-up finish to Liberman's 6.49. He did win the Englishtown Free Girls Funny Car night event, a final round 6.43 (Low ET) at 194.80 beat Dodger Glenn's 6.69/218 in the final. Tom made a third NHRA National event final at the Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #2 with a 6.48/223.32, just behind Prudhomme's 6.46/207. These two would meet in the final. Prock's first-round 6.54 beat Bonin and a semifinal 6.45/217.39 took out Pat Foster's tire-smoking 7.08/221 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In the final, Prock slowed to 7.08/121.08 in a loss to Prudhomme's 6.45/224. The team was the fourth alternate at Indy, running 6.486/225.56. They qualified #5 at Seattle (6.446/223.38) but lost a close round one race via holeshot to surprising local Richard Rogers, 6.61/218.44 to 6.60/198.23. Tom qualified #4 at Ontario for the World Finals with a 6.230/222.77. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett, 6.66/168 to 7.10/225, but broke against John Lombardo in round two. Tom ran 6.25/225.00 at the Orange County International Raceway Manufacturer's Meet 11/75. AKA Utica Flash. Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. |

Notes: Gene raced at the Irwindale Grand Premiere and hit 6.67/205.94. He was out for most of the first six months of 1975 after back surgery but returned in June 1975 to win at IHRA Bristol with a best of 6.36/223.88, defeating Denny Savage in the Chi-Town Hustler in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Denny Savage). | Gene was at Edmonton International on July 30 for its Funny Car Spectacular race. There were 24 cars present. All were to run three rounds of racing, with the winner being determined by wins. In Snow's first race, his 6.54/194 beat a badly out-of-shape Bill Spevacek. In his second race, he beat Ken McLean with a 6.39/215. His third race didn't go as planned as Raymond Beadle got out of shape and crossed the centerline, sideswiping Gene's Vega. Shortly after, he was in Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was a big 32-car show. Snow's 7.09/149 in the opening round of eliminations beat Bryan Raines' 7.14/194. But in the second round, his 6.53 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.38. |

Notes: The "Gold Digger" used a 120" Logghe chassis. The 426 Hemi used a Reath crank and now displaced 480 cubic inches.MT rods held ForgedTrue pistons, and the cam of choice was Howards. A Gary Dyer prepared GMC 6/71 sat on top of a Cragar intake manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The fuel was fed by Enderle injection. A Lenco two-speed was used, and the whole car weighed in at 1,850 lbs. The Mustang body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Gary qualified #9 at NHRA Gainesville at 6.80/214.79. He lost to Pat Foster in round one, 6.64/204 to 6.75/215.31. He qualified #5 at the Springnationals. His times were not listed, but #4 was a 6.80, and #9 was a 6.92, so he was between those two. Gary beat Steve Tansy in round one with a shutting off 11.11 after Tansy broke. Pat Foster got him again in round two, 6.73/215 to 6.87/212.26. The team debuted a new Dodge Charger at IHRA Dragway 42 and then ran NHRA Indy. According to the team, the Mustang's best numbers were 6.64/224. They also ran 6.64 at Tri-City and 6.65 at a match race at National Trail on April 12. We need to validate the 224; the best validated speed is the 215.31 from Gainesville. (See the other entry for the Charger). |

Notes: Roger Lindamood's '72 car continued to run a stock-stroke 426 Hemi. The chassis was built by the Logghe Brothers. Al Bergler did the tin. The engine used a stock Chrysler crank that was balanced and clearanced. M/T rods and Venolia 5.2:1 pistons were used. The cam was an Isky flat-tappet and Isky also supplied the lifters and valve springs. The pushrods were stock. Also stock were the intake valves, but Donovan valves were used for the exhaust. Kenyon Porting Service cleaned up the heads, but they were not ported or polished. The blower manifold and drive came from Cragar and Gary Dyer set up the GMC 6/71 blower. To get the 90% nitro into the motor, Enderle injection was used. To get the power to the ground, it went through a Lenco two-speed back to a Halibrand quick change rear end. The paint and lettering were done by Dennis Rickleff. According to a Rodder and Super Stock article, Roger had run a best of 6.69/224 at the time. | Also ran 6.84 at Connecticut. Ran a 6.82 first-round loss to Bobby Wood (6.78) at Warner Robins in 10/72, but Roger got back in on the break rule only to fall to the Trojan Horse at 6.60/223. Roger won Lubbock Dragway's season finale over Dave Condit and the L. A. Hooker with a 7.45/201.45 in 10/72. |

Notes: Tim started the season with a runner-up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 at 5.918/225.00. Tim and Steve Chrisman lost traction in the first round, but his 6.728/162.16 held off Steve's 6.86/220. In round two, he advanced with a 5.959/241.93 when Frank Hawley had severe tire shake and crossed the centerline in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, another 5.959/241.93 beat a tire-smoking 6.97/154 by Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Tim's final round 6.039/247.93 finished second best to Al Segrini's 5.96/234. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.780/238.72. Unfortunately, Tim blew a motor in the first round, and his 6.798/142.40 lost to John Force's tire-smoking 6.55/245. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington, racing his Corvette for the last time before his new Firebird was finished. He qualified #15 with a 6.29 and in the opening round, the car broke against Roy Harris. |

Notes: Ran this car at the 1984 World Finals and then sold it to Joe Pisano after his car crashed. Pomona Finals - 7th alternate DNQ at 6.120/247.93. Was this car running an early JP-1 at the finals? Formerly listed 5.88/249.30 for John this year. Where did he run that? Were those 1985 Blue Max times (where he went 5.88 at Brainerd)? We are removing them until we get confirmation. | Lombardo ran the 1985 Plueger Daytona at the '84 Finals (JP-1 initial testing?) to a tire-hazing 6.12 best on Saturday. Then sold it to Joe Pisano for 1985. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Steel GTO with factory frame. Along with Chrisman's Comet, Mr. Norm's AWB '65 Dodge and a handful of others, Beswick's blown Mystery Tornado match racer prompted Super Stock & Drag Illustrated to ask whether "we may see a return of the fuel coupe and sedan-type racing, so popular in the early days of drag racing." - RT | Built during the 1964 season when Jack Chrisman and the Dodge Chargers factory teams were grabbing headlines, this car also had the only set of aluminum 1964 GTO fenders Pontiac ever made according to Arnie. Beswick found the car so popular that he dropped his new A/FX Mercury sponsorship deal midway through the '65 season rather than park the Tornado. After building the 1963 Tameless Tiger Tempest, the chassis was sold to a circle track team in the Quad Cities region and was subsequently destroyed. The lightweight panels from the car were lost in a well-publicized fire at Beswick's farm. - GS | Arnie faced Dick Landy for a best-of-five match race at Capitol on July 31. He won the first race when Landy fouled, but Dick came back to win the second race. The third race saw Beswick's 9.72/145 beat the Dodge. Landy tied up the match at two, each with a 9.78/140 in the fourth race. The tiebreaker was won by Landy, giving him the match race win. – RH | Apparently, Arnie was credited with an 8.63/163 at Byron, IL, in the September 19, 1965, Drag News issue. Byron IL 1965 (9/18/65 Drag News), but Bret Kepner confirmed it was actually an 8.69 at Cordova (7/23, Bill & Bret late night phone call) |

Notes: The "Tennessee Bo-Weevil" had been a fixture at the NHRA US Nationals for 17 years when this car was built for the '72 season. Car owner Ray Godman spent $18,000 to build this 'Cuda. It had nothing but the best parts: a Woody Gilmore (RCE) 119" chassis, a KB Hemi, and Don Kirby paint. The Hemi used a stroker crank with M/T rods holding Black 5.6:1 pistons. A Lunati flat tappet cam was used. Jentzen Porting Service prepared the heads. The intake manifold, blower drive, and headers were all by Cragar, while Air Research built the GMC 6/71. Most funny cars by this time were running Enderle injection, but the "Bo-Weevil" was still using a Hilborn unit. The motor burned 98% nitro. The Lenco transmission fed the power back to a Halibrand rear end. Kenny Youngblood did the lettering. Preston Davis was at Lakeland in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.06. He had an easy first-round, and then in round two, Larry Arnold fouled against him. In the semifinal, Davis lost to Dale Pulde, who was driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Early in April, he was at Chandler Raceway in Indiana for a four-car show against Pulde, Clare Sanders in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and Gary Henderson driving the "Super Duster." I have no times for the race, but the final came down to Pulde and Sanders. Davis won the NHRA Division 2 Opener on April 9 at Phenix City. His final round 7.25/205.49 beat Paul Aray. Later in the month, he was at Blaney for another four-car match. Once again, he ran well but failed to reach the final. Preston qualified #6 at Indy at 6.547/223.88 but crossed the center line against Al Hanna in round one, and lost. He ran 6.66/213.27 at the Tulsa PRA race (where Preston was runner up to McEwen's 6.61). Another amazing team that somehow made both races on the same weekend. Preston also ran 6.619/215.31 at NHRA Amarillo 1972. Preston had a big wheelstand at the NHRA Supernationals at Ontario, and when the car landed, the steering was knocked out. He ended up hitting the wall on a qualifying run. We need confirmation and location of the 6.46. |

Notes: Brown started the season driving for "Mr. Ed" at Fremont's New Year's Day Race on January 2. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, the transmission broke against Gene Snow. At the 1972 Lions Grand Premiere (January 15/16), he was the last qualifier with a 6.64. A first-round 6.71/213.77 beat Leroy Goldstein's 6.89 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Kelly used a holeshot in the second round to beat Pat Foster, who was now driving Kelly's former ride, the Barry Setzer Vega. Kelly's 6.58/223.88 was good enough to beat Pat's quicker 6.54/223.32. He subsequently lost to Bobby Rowe (Hawaiian) in the semifinals. Kelly was the 20th alternate at the NHRA Winternationals (times unknown). On February 13, he was at the third OCIR All-Pro race, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field. An off-pace 8.00 lost to eventual winner Foster's 6.85 in the first round. Kelly also made the semifinals at the 1972 March Meet, losing to Jim Dunn. |

Notes: John started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 and, in the first round, lost to John Collins. John failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.47/221.13 missed the 6.45 cut-off. He managed to get into the show when the #15 qualifier, Larry Fullerton, had a bad fire and could not run in eliminations. His second chance didn't help much as an off-pace 7.23/183.67 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/232 in the first round. He made it into the final at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway, but he was late off the line, and his 6.62 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.66. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.35/231.95 qualified #4. Force then made his way to his first NHRA National event final by running 6.40/223.32 in the opening round over Tom McEwen's 6.43/224. A semifinal 6.52/227.27 advanced when Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" failed to fire. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein. Unfortunately, John's transmission broke, and he slowed to 12.27/64.01 while Bernstein picked up his first NHRA Oscar with a 6.45/233. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.34/230.17 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he improved to 6.27/220.58 to beat Bernstein's 6.36/229. But in round two, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" had a tire-smoking battle that saw Colson's 6.61/225 win out over John's 7.58/126.76. Force was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.24/231.95 qualified #11. He beat Gary Burgin in the first round, and a 6.24/231 beat a tire boiling Tom Hoover in round two. Colson also boiled the hides in the semifinals, and John's 6.29/233 advanced. It was his second NHRA final of the year, and he faced a formidable competitor in Beadle. Force slowed to an off-pace 6.46/212.26 that finished second best to the "Blue Max's" 6.37/232. John was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He failed to make the show; his 6.19/230.76 best was good for the fourth alternate. He also was unable to make the show at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. There he was the second alternate with a 6.32/224.46 best. At the NHRA World Finals held at Ontario Motor Speedway, the track was in rough shape. Force managed to qualify #6 with a 6.35/217.39. In the first round, his slower 6.70/222.22 beat Hoover's 6.65/229. A tire-smoking 7.23/217 beat Tom Ridings, who got out of shape in Joe Pisano's car in round two. The semifinals saw smoke city as both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires. Tripp recovered first to win with a 6.88/231 over Force's 6.99/218. John finished #8 in the NHRA Funny Car division for '79. Where was the 6.111 run? | I don't know anything about the 6.11, but Force did run 6.19 at a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race over local racer Paul Luppy in the 1st round. In the final, he beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore |

Notes: After not getting out of the six-second zone in '85, Scott did much better in '86. Scott qualified on the "bump spot" at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.03/235.10. In the first round, both he and opponent Johnny West smoked the tires, with Kalitta's 6.22/186.25 getting the win over West's 6.35/250. In round two, Scott advanced with a 7.35/202.06 when John Martin lost a supercharger, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the semifinals. A best of 7.01/136.76 failed to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals. Shortly after that, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.90/248.61 qualified #7. He had help from Larry Frazier at this race. In the first round, Kalitta had some trouble controlling his newly found horsepower, and the car ended up crossing the centerline in his race with Tom McEwen. He then went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he managed to qualify in the top half of the field with a 5.838/250.20 (#6). In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking McCulloch with a 5.804/252.10, but a 6.87/145.63 lost in round two against West. On June 15, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.888/246.64. He lost to low qualifier Mark Oswald in the first round. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kalitta qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A first-round 5.90/243.24 beat Della Woods' 6.24/217, but a semifinal 6.05/240.64 lost to West's 5.90/249. Near the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.903/243.50. Scott's first-round 5.924/251.81 lost to Kenny Bernstein's Low ET of the meet blast of 5.66 at 258. The following week (July 6), Scott was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but he got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to Tim Grose. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, Scott’s 5.799/251.25 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in round one. The best NHRA speed was 254.45 at NHRA Maple Grove. Did Scott run 258.52 somewhere this year? Was this a new body or car? (He ran off the end of the track at an IHRA race with the white body, tore up the front end. Probably a new body.) A 6.43/217.39 dispatched John Collins' 6.76/168 in the semis. But against Dale Emery in the final, he broke. |

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis, Indiana, where he did not qualify with his best NHRA national event times, 6.570/214.28. He ran 6.44 at Union Grove and was at Rockingham on Sept. 22 for the IHRA US Open Championships, where he qualified #2 with a 6.62 behind Paul Smith's similar 6.62 in the "Fireball Vega." He ran well, reaching the semifinals before his 6.85 lost to Ron Colson's motor-blowing 6.56 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Since Colson could not return for the final, Savage got back in to run Gene Snow for the title. Unfortunately, an off-pace 7.13/203.13 finished runner-up to Snow's 6.65/202. Savage was doing an article for National Dragster in '78. At that time, he mentioned that he had run a 6.41 best driving the "Hawaiian" in '74. |

Notes: Waterman motor. This was Russell's first ride. He was a crewman for Don Schumacher before this. A 6.52 qualified #12 at the AHRA Winternationals on January 27. He shut off to a 9.45 in the first round, losing to Billy Meyer's 6.48/211. He was the sixth alternate at NHRA Pomona (times unknown). At Bakersfield on March 3, he qualified #7. The car was booked in for a best-of-three FC match against Billy Meyer at U.S. 30, Gary, Indiana, for April 21. The ad proclaimed he had run a best of 6.46/225 with the car. We need confirmation of those times. |

Notes: In my opinion, this was Henry Harrison's best year behind the wheel of an FC. Before this, his biggest claim to fame had been his booting Mickey Thompson's Mustang to a 6.54/226 to take Low ET at the '71 NHRA US Nationals. Having Amos Satterlee as his crew chief didn't hurt either. Ten years earlier, Amos had put a blower on Eddie Schartman's SOHC-powered Comet and made him the most feared Funny Car at the end of the '67 season. While it was no longer a SOHC, he still knew how to make a KB run. Henry's season started at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.79 to qualify #4 for the sixteen-car field. Traction was poor at the meet, and in the first round, he lost to Jack Maroney's 7.65/189 with a 7.69/146. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was another sixteen-car show, and his 6.45 qualified #6. His 6.48/226.70 beat Wayne Stoeckel in the opening round of eliminations. But in round two, the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/204, beat his 6.85/225.56. He competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, but a 6.65/220.58 lost to Bryan Raines' 6.61/218 in the first round. On April 2, Harrison was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/226.70. In the opening round, his 6.40/226.70 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.32/215. In May, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was a tough show as his 6.34 qualified on the "bump." But he improved to 6.29/229.59 to beat Tom McEwen's sleepy 6.07/217 in round one. In the semifinals, Dave Condit's 6.70/181 in the "L. A. Hooker" lost to Henry's 6.26/225.00. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the "Snake's" 6.04/242 got the victory over his 6.37/229.00. Things went better on June 10 at OCIR's Funny Car Spectacular. He beat Russell Long, driving the "Sundance" Arrow in round one. A second-round 6.22 (Low ET) at 223.32 sent Jim Adolph packing for home. Henry got a solo in the semifinals when Gary Densham broke, and he ran 6.43/214 to advance. In the final, he faced Pat Foster, who was driving for Joe Pisano. Pat had problems and shut down to 12.03 while Henry won another 6.22 at 226. He was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division Seven race. He set Low ET in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 6.26/224.44. He opened eliminations with a 6.41/224.44 to stop Densham at 6.54/207. Henry got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals as only six cars had shown. He advanced with a 6.33/227.85. He went up against Dave Hough, driving the "Super Shops" Arrow in the final. Dave got the victory with a 6.27/229, while Harrison's motor-blowing 6.40/214.29 got him the runner-up spot. Harrison won the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville Raceway. He set Low ET at 6.52 but only needed a 7.19/219.52 in the final to win as Foster lost a blower belt. On July 29, he qualified #3 at the PDA Championships held at OCIR with a 6.32. He made it into the final before losing to future superstar John Force. He was also runner-up at Beeline's Gold Cup Funny Car race. There it was Tripp Shumake who stopped him in the final. | 1978 D7 Champs. Satterlee worked at Keith Black's at the time, where Engle Cam alumni Wes Cerny was Shop Foreman at one time. - Joe Moore |

He qualified #6 at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals with a 6.47/221.13. An opening round 6.50/217.91 lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.35/224. Al qualified #16 at NHRA Indy with a 6.234/232.55. He beat Dale Pulde in round one, 6.398/225.00 to 6.56/225. He fouled against Richard Rogers in round two and lost, 9.24/84 to Al's wasted 6.712/213. In mid-October, he was at Lakeland for a best-of-three match against Shirl Greer. He won the first race by default when Greer broke. But Greer came back to win the next two races and the match.AKA Utica Flash. |

Notes: Tom started his season at the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at OCIR in January. It wasn't a great start as although his 6.45/230 in the first round, of eliminations beat Kenny Bernstein, he kicked a couple of rods out of it, and he was done for the day. His next stop was the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field and, in the first round, lost to low qualifier Gary Burgin. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, McEwen qualified #4 with a 6.08/236.84. Unfortunately, he lost to Hank Johnson in the first round. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lasted until round two before his early-shut off 7.83/110 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.23/229.00. In the first round, he had problems and shut down to a 10.62 loss to Raymond Beadle's 5.99 in the "Blue Max." In April, he was at OCIR for a 64 car show. A first-round 6.23/227.84 lost a close one to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" at 6.22/235. A runner-up finish followed that at the Seattle Opener. The race was run Chicago-style, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. It was an eight-car show, and he singled with a 6.20/225 in the first round, when Jim Moore broke. In round two, Tom lost to Colson's 6.17 with a quicker 6.15. The times qualified both for the final. The "Mongoose" smoked the tires in the final, and his 6.46/169.81 lost to Colson's 6.15/238. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race, where he qualified #3 with a 6.09/231.95. However, it rained after qualifying, and the race was postponed. He was unable to come back and run on the rain date. McEwen qualified #11 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.23/234.98. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," who advanced with a 6.21. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Tom set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49/221.14. But he had a strange first-round race with Larry Gould that saw both cars leave the track. Normally both are disqualified, but for some reason, Gould advanced, and McEwen was out. He failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shortly after that, he was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.25 qualified #3, and he got to make an easy solo in the first round, when Paul Gordon broke. The old "Hot Wheels" teammates faced each other in the semifinals, and his 6.35/227 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.28/218. |

Notes: Johnson was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #12 with a 6.170/236.84 and beat Tom McEwen in the first round, 6.210/235.60 to 6.27/230. A 6.220/229.59 in round two lost to eventual winner Dale Pulde's 6.12/238. He was in Seattle on May 4 for the second NHRA Division Six race. It was an eight-car field, and Johnson qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. Both smoked their tires in that race, but Hank's 6.72 crossed the stripe first ahead of Ed's 6.74. Mike Miller had problems on the line and shut down in the semi-final, so Hank made a 6.51/225.56 solo to advance. He faced #2 qualifier Jim Moore in the final. Once again, both had traction difficulties, but Johnson got the victory with a 6.73/223.32 over Moore's 6.81/210. Hank ran 6.250/233.76 at NHRA Indy but was far outside the field. He qualified #12 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.387/229.59. In the first round, he lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," 6.19/238 to 6.96/152.38. Hank attempted to qualify at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals but failed to make the show (sixth alternate, times unavailable but not quicker than 6.82). |

Notes: Jim failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Elroy Airport for an eight-car show shortly after that. It was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was rough, to say the least. Jim qualified #2 with a 7.00/211.76. A 7.12 in the first round, beat Jack Maroney, while his 7.10/217.38 (Top Speed) beat Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. He faced Craig Epperly in the final, and Dunn's vast experience from years of racing on poor tracks made the difference as he ran 7.01/216.86 to pick up the win over Epperly, who smoked the tires and lost. As mentioned, he qualified well at the Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, he got crossed up against Bob Pickett in the first round, and shut off. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals to run an eight-car show at OCIR being run the same day (March 15). Dunn qualified #1 with a 6.24/229.59 and went on to win, stopping Rodney Flournoy in the final. He had also set Low ET at 6.18. On April 5, he was at Green Valley for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. He qualified #1 with a 6.19/227.84, but he smoked the tires in round one, and lost to Shumake. OCIR hosted the next Western Regional, and Jim qualified #3 for the race with a 6.28/229.00. In the first round, Sherm Gunn had problems and shut off while Jim took it easy with a 7.03/196.50 to advance. He lost to the meet's eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Dunn's 6.32/214.79 was no match for the "Snake's" 6.17/238. At the end of June, he was at Sacramento for another Western Regional event. His 6.26/214.29 qualified second to Gordie Bonin's 6.24/236. These two would work their way into the final together. In the opening round, Jim's 6.28/218.96 defeated John Force's 6.87/181. In the semifinal, Hank Johnson's 6.48/221 lost to his 6.25/211.27. Both he and Bonin had been close in times during eliminations, with Bonin having a slight edge. It stayed that way as Bonin's 6.16/237 got the victory over Dunn's 6.19/213.38. Jim won the NHRA World Finals and was runner up to Raymond beadle at the US Nationals. Bakersfield at 6.286/224.43. Ran 6.050/238.72 at OCIR Finals. Jim won the 1981 OCIR World Finals over Gary Burgin. |

Notes: Miller was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.28/226.18 best. He also failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.14/234.98 best was the first alternate. He attempted to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but it was a tough eight-car show, and he failed to qualify. He made the field at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 6.25/232.55 qualified #14. In round one, he upset Billy Meyer's 6.47/238 with a 6.40/222. In round two, Miller's 6.61/192.71 fell to John Collins' 6.31/215. On June 27, Fuzz was at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional, but his 6.67/207.37 best was good for the second alternate for the eight-car field. A 6.42/225.56 qualified him on the "bump" for the eight-car field at the NHRA Mile High Nationals on July 4. He improved to 6.34/229.00 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Billy Meyer's 6.28/231. Fuzz qualified on the "bump" with a 6.20/234.98 at the NHRA Summernationals. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.35/226.13 when Meyer smoked his tires and lost. In the second round, he ran a 6.32/224.43 but lost to Dale Armstrong's 6.14/229. On July 26, he was in Atlanta International Raceway for the NHRA's fourth Eastern Regional. He qualified #5 with a 6.35/225.08, but in round one, he ran an even better 6.28/228.49 but lost to Tom Anderson's holeshot aided 6.31/226. At the next Eastern Regional race on August 2 at Maple Grove, he qualified #2 with a 6.11/236.84 and made it into the final before losing to Gary Burgin's 6.02/239 with a 6.19/234.37. The following week (August 9), he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Miller qualified #6 with a 6.20/233.16, but in round one, a 6.41/227.84 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.23/230 in the "Blue Max." Miller's next stop was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Eastern Regional. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.30/235.60 (Top Speed), but an off-pace 6.63/190.67 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.35/219 in the opening round. A strong 6.06 qualified #14 for the NHRA US Nationals. He beat Gary Burgin and a motor-blowing Don Prudhomme in the first two rounds of eliminations before losing to Jim Dunn in the semifinal. His next stop was at Houston International for the final NHRA Western Regional race. Only five cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field, and Fuzz ran 6.26/227.84 for the pope position. He got the "odd-lot" solo in the opening round and ran 6.33/228.00. But he lost a close one to Bernstein in the semifinal that saw his 6.28/229.59 (Top Speed) lose to Kenny's 6.25/218. Fuzz had a great year in 1981, qualifying at will at NHRA national events and hitting several nice 6.0 passes. |
