Notes: First funny car in the 5.70s at Indy 1982. This car was painted in Budweiser colors for Indy because Anderson made the first Big Bud Shootout and Bernstein didn't. Photo from the 1982 US Nationals. | Tom qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.04/231.95. He beat Bobby Hilton and Dale Pulde in the first two rounds before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 6.11/234 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" with a 6.29/164.49 in the semifinals. A week later (June 20), the team was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Anderson’s 5.98 qualified #6 in the eight-car field. He beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to reach the final against Pulde. In the final, Tom had traction problems and slowed to a 6.80 loss while Pulde grabbed the victory with a 6.04. The NHRA Grandnationals in Canada was another eight-car show and Tom qualified #7 with a 6.14/233.76. Unfortunately, he lost early in eliminations. |

Notes: At Pomona for the Winternationals, Mark didn't qualify all that well with a 5.44/269.13 fitting in the #11 spot. He improved to a first-round 5.34/274.05 over Ed McCulloch, but in the second round, he lost to Chris Lane's 7.17/246 to Mark's 7.50/170.71 in a troubled run for both drivers. He qualified much better at the next NHRA race, the Supernationals, where a 5.29/272.23 put him in the #3 spot. Mark made it into the semifinals before smoking the tires and losing to Bruce Larson. At the Gatornationals, the team again qualified #3 with a 5.34/271.41 getting the spot. Unfortunately, they lost to Art Hendey in the second round. A 5.55/260.86 qualified in the dreaded #9 position at the Southern Nationals setting up a first-round matchup against low qualifier Larson. Bruce triumphed over Oswald in that race. By the fifth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, the team was getting antsy to win. A 5.36/275.06 qualified #4, and Mark ran 5.38 over Eric Reed in the first round. In the second round, he got a break when John Force broke at half-track and a 5.40/259 advanced into the semifinals to meet Don Prudhomme. In that race, a 5.41/272 beat Prudhomme's quicker 5.39, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was in its first final of '89. All good things come to an end, and in the final against Kenny Bernstein, the Probe broke, giving Kenny a single for the win. It was off to the Cajun Nationals on May 28 for the sixth stop on the NHRA tour. A 5.44/266.66 qualified #2 just behind Prudhomme. Mark beat a tire-smoking Force in the first round with a 5.52/264. A second-round 5.57 lost to McCulloch's 5.46. It was then off to National Trail for the Springnationals, where Mark qualified #5 with a 5.34/271.49. An even better 5.32 in the first round beat Frank Kramberger, but the car broke after his burnout against Tom Hoover in the second round. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Oswald ran 5.51/253.95 to qualify #2. He beat R.C Sherman in the first round, with a 5.49/246.23 and a second-round 5.60/256.55 beat Force's 5.63/263. In the semi's, another 5.60/238.98 beat Hendey and set up another final round matchup against Bernstein. Oswald didn't break this time, but his 5.54/258.69 just lost to Kenny's 5.51/265. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, a 5.36 qualified #4. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, but against Don Gay Jr. in round two, the Probe broke. It was beginning to become a long winless season for the team when they rolled into Denver for the Mile High Nationals. They qualified #3 with a 5.59/253.09 and beat Gay Jr. in the first round and in round two a 5.64/249 beat Force's 5.70. In the semifinals against Bernstein, Mark beat him with a track record 5.50 at 258, putting himself in the final against Larson. In the final, Oswald ran a 5.62 but lost it on the starting line to Bruce's slower 5.66. The eleventh race of the season was the California Nationals on July 30. Once again, the team made it to the finals. A 5.40/274.47 qualified #4. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and in the second round, both he and Hendey smoked the tires with Oswald's 6.49/239.61 coming out on top. Mark pulled a driving job on McCulloch in the semifinals beating Ed's 5.47/270 with a 5.49/267.85. In the final, he ran Prudhomme, who had set Low ET and Top Speed (5.30/276.49). Mark picked it up in the final to a 5.36/274.72 but still lost to the "Snake's" 5.32/272. It was the fourth runner-up finish of the year for the team. The tour continued to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Mark qualified #8 with a 5.43/266.27 but lost to R.C. Sherman in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. A 5.46/263.23 qualified #7. In the first round, the Probe spun the tires to a 6.12/248.07 and lost to Larry Camenzind's 5.94/212. The bad luck continued right into Indy for the US Nationals. The team qualified #5 with a 5.33/272.06, but upstart Scott Kalitta beat them in the first round. After losing in the first round at the last three events, the team rebounded somewhat at the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Mark qualified #2 with a 5.21/283.10. A 5.29/265.09 advanced when Tom Hoover fouled in the first round. In round two, he backed up his qualifying marks for both ends of the NHRA record when he beat Tony McCallum with a 5.23/279.50. Unfortunately, Mark smoked the tires to a shut-off 8.86/87.20 loss to Force's 5.34/276 in the semifinals. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, a 5.19/280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #3. Oswald beat Mike Dunn in the first round, with a 5.24 and a second-round 5.29/273.39 beat Al Hofmann in round two. Mark finally got one back from Larson in the semifinal when his 5.23/281.60 beat Bruce's close 5.24/274. In the final, he met Prudhomme, and while Don blasted to a 5.26/269 victory, Mark smoked the tires to another runner-up finish. The team got its first #1 qualifying position of the year at the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway with a 5.41 (Low ET) doing the deed. Things looked rosy until Mike Dunn put them on the trailer in the first round. It was back to Pomona for the season-ending World Finals, where a 5.28 (Low ET) at 279.41 got their second pole of the year. In the first round, he beat Hoover with a new NHRA Top Speed record of 283.28, but he ended his season in the next round against McCulloch when Mark spun the tires and lost to Ed's 5.56/264. Also, set the record at 5.214 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 5.298/283.10 National Records at 89 Supernationals. The 283.28 National Record was the fastest NHRA speed of the decade (second only to Scott Kalitta's 286.62 at IHRA Ennis 1988). Also, great 5.232 at 89 Chiefs was part of the quickest side-by-side pass (Bruce Larson 5.247). Also, 281.60 at Chiefs was half of the fastest side-by-side pass (Larson 274.72). Mark Oswald and the "Candies and Hughes" team had a good season in '89 despite finishing the season fourth in points. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: After Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein switched to Top Fuel for the '90 season, everyone expected this team to dominate. Things didn't work out that way. Mark started '90 by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.29/279.41 (Top Speed). He lost to Art Hendey in the first round. At Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Mark's 5.40/275.06 qualified #8. In the first round, he had a close race with Ed McCulloch that saw his 5.37/277.77 defeat Ed's 5.37/265. In round two, another 5.37 at 275.48 beat K.C. Spurlock's slightly quicker 5.36/276. Both he and opponent Bruce Larson had problems in their semifinal race, but Larson's tire-smoking 6.43/147 beat Oswald, who shut down to a 10.97/71.03. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals in Texas. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.32/282.22 (Top Speed). An even better 5.30/278.37 in the first round, beat Gary Densham, and he got a solo in round two when Tom Hoover could not show. Mark ran a wheelstanding 7.29 to advance. In the semifinals, his 5.41/283.10 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.28/278. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.36/276.41 qualified #4, and a 5.63/231.24 in the opening round beat Frank Kramberger's 5.68/261. But Oswald lost to eventual winner McCulloch in round two. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car show; his 5.35/278.12 (Top Speed) qualified #6. His times were not great, but Oswald made it into the final. He started by running 5.48/272.23 in the opening round to beat Jim White in the "Hawaiian." Both he and Larson smoked the tires in the semifinal, with Mark's 5.62/267.69 coming out on top over Bruce's 5.86/247. He faced John Force in the final, and the two put on a great race as both ran 5.43 (Oswald at 277.26), but Force crossed the stripe first for the victory. Atlanta was a race Oswald would rather forget. The car kept dropping cylinders on every pass. He "only" qualified #14 with a 5.64/277.34, and he was out after the first round as McCulloch's 5.35/267 beat his 5.48/268.81 and went on to win. But as bad as Atlanta had been, Memphis was the exact opposite. Mark qualified #7 with a 5.36/281.16, beating Johnny West in the first round. He had a close race with Spurlock in round two, where both ran 5.37 (Oswald at 278), but Mark crossed the line first. A 5.40/265 in the semifinals stopped Larson's 5.50, and Oswald found himself in the final against McCulloch. He got some payback from the last couple of losses to the "Ace" by running a 5.42/279.15 in the final over Ed's 5.47/265. Baton Rouge was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Cajun Nationals. Oswald qualified #3 with a 5.43/273.14. He beat Del Denton in the first round, and despite smoking the tires to a 6.85/145 in round two, he won when Neely fouled. But he smoked the tires once again in the semifinals and lost to Richard Hartman. He also made it as far as the semifinals at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/272.06 and, in round one, beat Hartman's 5.52/260 with another 5.44 at 274.55. Larson fouled against him in round two, and Mark advanced with a 5.45/274.30. But in the semifinals, Oswald fouled against White. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Mark's 5.45/268.97 qualified #4. Things went fairly well for the team. A 5.49 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann, and a second-round 5.47/267 beat Tom Hoover. Mark's driving in the semifinal got the car into the final as his 5.43/268.41 defeated Larson's 5.42/269. Oswald even had lane choice over Force for their final round meeting, but Mark had problems and shut down to 10.92/70.15 while Force won with a 5.40/267. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: On November 1, Richard was at Amarillo to get his Funny Car license. Jake Johnston was there driving the "Blue Max" and it was in this car that Tharp made his licensing runs. At the NHRA Supernationals on November 22 at Ontario Motor Speedway, Richard was the new driver behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." He qualified #9 with a 7.19 and in the first round, was up against low qualifier Don Prudhomme. Tharp was up for the task, running a 6.96 over the "Snake" who had transmission problems. In round two, he beat Rich Siroonian's 7.16 in John Mazmanian's car with a 7.12. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, a steering link broke and he had to shut off giving Larry Arnold a free ride into the final. He won the OCIR final race of '70 on December 5. It was an eight-car show and Tharp dominated. A first-round 6.94/210 beat Stan Shiroma while in the semifinals, his Low ET shot of 6.83/216.34 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster." In the final, a 6.91/216.94 snagged him his first Funny Car victory. He ended his season at Irwindale on December 12 for the Toys for Tots race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 7.31, but he shut off in his first-round race against Dale Pulde. | Tharp's best NHRA time was 6.966. |

Notes: Set the national record at 5.900 at 1981 Mile High nationals (altitude factored from a 6.124). Ran first five with a 5.993 at Gainesville 3/15/81 to become the 7th member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. We need to confirm that this was a Mike Kase car. | Kenny started the season well by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson on January 18. He qualified #2 with a 6.69/196, and in the first round, he picked up to a 6.56/211 to beat Tom Hoover's 6.85/209. In the semifinals, he ran 6.56 again at 213 to beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. In the final, he unleashed Low ET (traction was poor) 6.54/214 to take the win over low qualifier Gordie Bonin's 6.68/202. Kenny barely made the field at Pomona on February 1 for the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #15. He lost to Denny Savage in the first round. That should have been it for his Pomona story, but in the semifinals, his Texas neighbors, the "Blue Max" team, had blown off its roof on a 245 mph run that beat Prudhomme. They had no spare body, so Bernstein offered up his spare. The "Max" team cut the roof off of his car and grafted it onto theirs. All that effort, and they lost to Billy Meyer in the final. On March 8, Kenny was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.426/226.13 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, the race was postponed one week due to rain, and he could not return the following week. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 6.014/245.90. He beat Ron Colson's 6.06/233 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 5.993/238.72. He advanced past Prudhomme in round two when the "Snake" got crossed up. In the semifinal, he lost to Bonin. A week later (March 22), he was in the winner's circle at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET at 6.18 and beat Shirl Greer and Dale Pulde to reach the final. In the final, he ran the team he helped at Pomona, the Raymond Beadle-driven "Blue Max." Kenny took the victory with a 6.45/212. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. It was an eight-car show, and Kenny's 6.27/233.76 qualified #2. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.15/240.00 that beat Brian Conway. In the semifinals, a 6.45/209.79 lost to Beadle's 6.25/228. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta also had an eight-car field. It was a tough show to make with a 6.16 "bump." A 6.09/241.28 qualified Bernstein #3. He made his way to the finals by beating Meyer in the first round, with a 6.08/242.58, and in the semifinals, Prudhomme broke against him. In the final, he faced Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. It was a close race, but Tripp's 6.07/233 beat Kenny's 6.08/243.90 (Top Speed). May 3 found the "Budweiser King" team at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 6.03 and won his first-round race over Paul Smith with a 6.14/231.36. In the semifinal, his 6.28/226.70 lost to Meyer's 6.26/213.77. OCIR hosted the NHRA Western Regional on May 9. Things didn't go well there. It was an eight-car show with a soft "bump" of only 6.47. The "Budweiser King" failed to qualify. After that, it was off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/245.90 (Top Speed) qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He faced low qualifier Beadle in the first round, smoked the tires, and lost. Kenny ended May with a runner-up finish to Meyer at the IHRA World Nationals. He did come away with Low ET at 5.97. At the NHRA Springnationals, Kenny qualified #5 with a 6.12/239.36. This set up an interesting first-round race with his eventual crew chief, Dale Armstrong. Bernstein won that first-round race with a 6.18/238, but he didn't get much further when his round two 6.21/233.16 lost to Beadle's 6.15/235. Kenny did really well in the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.17/217.91; in the first round, his 6.24/227.84 beat Shumake's 6.28/228. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.12/238.72, beating John Collins' 6.49/189. In the final, he ran the "Blue Max." Bernstein won a 6.21/234.37 over Beadle's 6.32/202. The "Budweiser King" really opened some eyes at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where Kenny pushed the car to a 5.860 at 237.46 in qualifying. Of course, that was Low ET and a new track record. He beat Smith in round two with a 6.08/238.72, while a tire-smoking 6.38/225.56 advanced in round two when Frank Hawley broke in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Unfortunately, a semifinal 6.24/233.76 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.19/230. He lost to Prudhomme again the following week at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Only this time, it was in the final. The Budweiser team then returned to Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals in early August. Kenny qualified #3 with a 6.14, and then in the first round, his off-pace 6.70 lost to Smith's 6.50. But Paul's Citation broke while getting the win and could not run the semifinals, so Kenny got back into the show. A 6.30/232.55 beat Meyer, who smoked the tires. He ran the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle won, running 6.20/238 to Bernstein's 6.30/221.67. A week later (August 9), he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Kenny's 6.07/241.93 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He beat Tom Anderson and Beadle to reach the final, where he faced Prudhomme again. This time, Bernstein got out of shape and shut off to 14.01/55.14, giving the "Snake" the win at 7.18. The next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was another eight-car show, and things didn't look so good when he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.32. His 6.35/225.80 beat Hawley's 6.39/217 in the opening round. In the semifinals, he advanced when Gary Burgin broke. The final featured Bernstein versus Armstrong, but Dale had broken in his semifinal win, so Bernstein soloed for the victory. A week later (August 23), these two would meet again in the final at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Beech Bend. They qualified 1/2, with Armstrong's 6.10/223 leading and Bernstein chasing with a 6.18/222.22. A first-round 6.35/219.51 beat Fuzz Miller's 6.63/190. Kenny's 6.19/217.39 in the semifinals beat John Pott's 6.27/217. That put the two into the final, where Kenny improved to 6.14/234.98 to take the victory over Armstrong's 6.24/235. Then came the US Nationals at Indianapolis. Bernstein ran an impressive 247.25 while qualifying in the dreaded #9 spot. This set up a first-round pairing with low qualifier Beadle. They had a good race, but Raymond's 6.02/246 won over Kenny's 6.09/241.28. Beadle would go on to win the race. Bristol was next on the calendar for the IHRA US Open. Bernstein's track record 5.98 at 242.58 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. In the first round, Burgin smoked the tires, and Kenny's 6.10/220.04 advanced. In the semifinals, he had a blower explode that ripped the roof and windshield off the car. His 6.36/197.80 lost to eventual winner Pott's 6.07/234 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." NHRA held its final Western Regional race at Houston on September 20. Only five cars showed, and Kenny's 13-second time qualified last. In the first round, he and Shumake had a tire smoker that saw his 6.75/185.95 beat Tripp's slightly quicker 6.74/213. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.25/218.44 over Miller's right there at 6.28/229. This put the "Budweiser King" into another final. But this time, a tire-smoking 10.80/79.00 lost to Burgin's 6.49/220. The year was winding down, and Bernstein wanted to move up in the NHRA points standings. Going into the Golden Gate Nationals, he was second in points with 6,070 behind Beadle's 7,062. Prudhomme followed these two with 5,772 points. But Fremont was not good to the points chasers. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the 16-car field. While Beadle qualified and made it into the semifinals, neither Bernstein nor Prudhomme made the show! Kenny was the fifth alternate with a 6.22/207.85 best. On his last qualifying attempt, he blew a motor. That pretty much ended his hopes in the points chase. Things went even worse at the season-ending NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Bernstein could do no better than the sixth alternate with a 6.27/188.28 best. Prudhomme snuck past him in points, and Bernstein finished third for the year. The NHRA season might have ended, but a whole new chapter in the Bernstein story was about to begin. It started at OCIR on November 7 for the Manufacturer's Meet. For the first time, Armstrong came on board as crew chief. While the results were not immediately felt, it was the start of a super team. Bernstein won his first race with a 6.56/211 over Dave Condit, and in his second race, he smoked the tires and lost to Mike Dunn. The track was not at its best, as Low ET was 5.98 by Billy Meyer. Formerly listed a 250 mph run at an AHRA national event. We need confirmation of that and using the Indy 247.25 until we get it. |

Notes: One of the biggest surprises at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona in '86 was Oswald's not qualifying for the show. His best attempt yielded only a 9.56/87.89. That was nowhere near the 6.09 "bump spot." The team then went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark was still not running up to par, qualifying #7 with a 6.61/237.46. A first-round 6.38/247.93 (Top Speed) beat Billy Meyer, who shut off, but in the semifinals, he shut off and lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86 (Low ET) at 236. In Gainesville, things went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mark ran a 5.70/263.00 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. In the first round, an even better 5.65/259.36 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." In the second round, it was Oswald who smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.96/49.71 that lost to Ed McCulloch. Due to a rain delay, the Gatornats were run the same weekend as the IHRA Winternationals, so obviously, they didn't run the Darlington race. But they did make IHRA's second event, the Bayou Nationals at Louisiana Raceway Park. Oswald qualified #1 and beat McCulloch in the final for the victory. He lost to Jim Head in the first round, at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta after qualifying #2 with a 5.72/258.91 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. On May 4, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Oswald qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.70, but he was upset in the opening round by Steve Hodkinson. Mark's off-pace 6.05/205.94 fell to Steve's low buck car that won with a 5.88/246. Early in June, Oswald went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 5.76/263.11 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He improved to 5.74/260.11 to defeat Force's 5.78/253 in round one, but he lost in the battle of the "beer cars" in the semifinal, where his 5.78/257.14 fell to Bernstein's 5.71/252. Mark qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.75/249.86. In their first-round race, Hodkinson crossed the center line against him, and Oswald advanced with a 5.92/246.77. John Force also crossed the centerline against him in the second round, and once again, Mark advanced, this time at 5.84/252.59. This did not happen again in the semifinal, as eventual winner Tom McEwen laid a straight as an arrow 5.85/236 on him to beat the Firebird's 5.94/251.81. Another win finally came at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.65/259.66 (speed was a new track record). He continued to run strong through eliminations, and in the semifinal, his 5.76/255.17 beat Force's 5.84/253. The only problem was, Bernstein won his semifinal race with a 5.72/255, giving him lane choice in the final. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes had to be given a lot of credit in this win as he didn't dial in too much power and smoke the tires. Oswald won the final with a 5.76/255.76 over Kenny's 5.80/250. The following week (June 22), he also won the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.84/247.25. Larry Gould's 6.67/212 fell to his 5.89/252.80 in the opening round, and Mark reset both ends of the track record in the semifinal with a 5.77/254.95 that beat Paul Smith's 6.12/222 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced McEwen in the final, and there was no stopping the "Candies and Hughes" car on this day as Mark's 5.80/254.95 easily took the win over Tom's off-pace 6.19/176. At the end of June, the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.69/260.25 got the pole, but Mark and Brad Tuttle fried the tires in the opening round. Brad's 6.59/251 came out on top over Oswald's 6.61/251. It was probably the best race to watch of round one. The two "beer cars then met again in the final at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. They qualified one and two, with Bernstein's 5.81/256 getting the pole over Oswald's 5.87/245.90. Mark ran an easy 6.03/239.36 to advance in round one, when Doc Halladay broke. In the semifinal, he stepped it up to a 5.91/249 to beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch. Bernstein had the edge in performance at this event, and it stayed true in the final where his 5.87/253 got the victory over Mark's 5.99/238.09 runner-up effort. Photo from Indy 1986. Mark also ran 265 at IHRA Bristol and won the 1986 IHRA championship. He also ran 5.619 at the 1986 Chiefs at Ennis. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Cool rear spoiler. Oswald, smoking the tires, also beat Bernstein wire-to-wire in the final of the '86 Mile-Highs, a hell of a race on YouTube. Bernstein didn't smoke 'em, and Oswald still beat him. - Joe Moore |

Notes: In Jan '84, Gary was at Firebird's Drag Racing Superbowl. He ran 5.99/252.10 to become the first driver over 250 at Firebird. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 at a stout 5.925/254.95, but a first-round 6.57 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.21 in the "Blue Max," but both cars were disqualified. Southern crossed the centerline, and Beadle hit the wall! Mark Oswald had the resultant bye run in round two. The team attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.255/234.37 best was good for the fifth alternate. The team's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There were only seventeen cars on hand for the sixteen-car field, so Gary didn't have to push too hard in qualifying, running 6.33 for the "bump" spot. He lost to Beadle in the opening round of eliminations. At NHRA Atlanta, he also ran 6.338/229.59, but that was only good for the #e alternate slot. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, now run in May, he failed to qualify in the eight-car field with a 6.07 best. The bump was a 6.03. After qualifying ended, Gary made another pass and ran 5.86/251. Southern was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He qualified on the bump spot at 6.138/241.28, but eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.88/248 beat Gary's 6.200/248.61 in the first round. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified #3 with a career-best(to this point),5.81 at 248. He broke against Al Segrini in the first round. He also lost early at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #10 with a 6.34 before losing to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Surprisingly, the team failed to qualify for the eight-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 5.996/250.00 qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Gary advanced with a 6.123/243.90. In round two, his 6.075/247.93 lost to eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.85/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. The NHRA Summenationals at Englishtown were a disappointment as Gary failed to qualify, ending up as the first alternate with a 6.052/253.52. Gary also finished one slot outside the field in Brainerd with a 6.075/249.30 effort. The team had a rough outing at Indy, finishing as the last non-qualifier with a 6.312/246.57. The car always had the power. Where did the 5.73/259 numbers occur? We remember them but not the track or year. We need confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. | At the beginning of '84, Jeb Allen helped with the clutch, and his name was on the back quarter panel for a short time. I saw the 604 number at the Winternationals and thought it was Kenney Goodell. The announcer said Dunlap had 500 gallons of nitro and several motors. Gary Southern's last go in this car was at the Oct. 5th FC show at Carlsbad; saw it myself. ND-covered meet. In eliminations GS ran an rnon-and-off 6.64/233. Don't recall the other lane, rn'Goose/Grose, all Corvette Final. He drove the Dave Korzan Corvette at the Finals. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Beadle started the '84 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he smacked the guardrail while beating Gary Southern in the first round with a 6.21. He could not make the second round due to damage to the car. Things improved at the Gatornationals, where he qualified for #8 with a 5.88/253.52. A first-round 6.04/202.70 beat Jim White's 6.12/233, and in round two, he shut down to a winning 8.34/109.35 when Tom McEwen broke. In the semifinals, he faced Kenny Bernstein and unfortunately smoked the tires, losing to Kenny's 5.79/256. He qualified #8 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.01 but lost early. In April, the team was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Raymond ran 5.92 to qualify #11. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. On May 6, Raymond qualified #3 at Rockingham with a career-best (to this point) 5.77/258.52 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lasted until round two before his tire-smoking, 7.24/128 lost to Jim Head's 6.09/250. He also smoked the tires in a first-round loss to Al Segrini at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bristol was the next stop for the team for the IHRA Springnationals. Beadle's 5.89/250 qualified #6, and his 5.95/249.30 advanced over a fouling Paul Smith in the "Custom Body" car in the first round. He and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car had a great race in round two that saw Oswald's 5.82/254 get the better of the "Max's" 5.89/252.10. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships shortly after. A 5.96 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field, and Beadle lasted until round two before his off-pace 6.50 lost to Smith's 5.99. Beadle had won the '83 NHRA Springnationals and hoped to repeat in '84. He started by qualifying #8 at Columbus with a 5.94/248.61. An opening round 5.97/238.09 beat Head's 6.07/243, and in round two, a 5.93/247.25 took out Sherm Gunn's 6.28/191. But his repeat chances were over in the semifinal when Beadle's 5.96/241.93 lost to eventual winner Oswald's 5.89/242. Things didn't go so well in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.93/251.39 but lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the opening round. The following week (July 8) saw more of the same. They were in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Raymond's 5.79/259.36 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field. But in round one, a sheared fuel pump ended their chances of advancing. But after a couple of weeks of lows came the highs. Beadle won for the first time in thirteen months at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A lot of racer's luck helped out in this win, but it was still a win. He had only qualified #11 with a 5.87/247.93. Don Prudhomme had a blower explode in the opening round of eliminations, and Beadle advanced with a 6.58. Tim Grose smoked the tires in the second round, and a 5.92/249.30 advanced the "Max." He was to face Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, but the "Budweiser King" broke a reverser after its burnout, and Beadle singled into the final with a 5.93/250.00. He went up against Meyer in the final, and his 5.95/247.93 took the victory over Billy's 5.97/248. Then came a stop at Dragway 42 for the ADRA's first race, the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field. Beadle qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal before his blower exploded on a 6.53 pass that lost to eventual winner Jim White. His best times there were 5.92/244. Raymond sure didn't have to wait long before scoring his next NHRA victory, as it came at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.92/233.76 and then set a 5.90 track record during eliminations. He beat Prudhomme in the semifinal and then went up against Frank Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for the title. Hawley fouled, and Beadle ran 5.93/248.61 (speed was a track record) for the victory. At the IHRA Summernationals, held at Edgewater, he qualified #3, then during eliminations, he set Low ET at 5.78 but lost to Oswald in the semifinal. After running so well, the team had to be disappointed at Brainerd. Beadle "only" qualified #12 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, and he lost to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Raymond's best NHRA times of 5.750 at Indy and 257.14 at Atlanta. We formerly listed 5.735 but are removing that until we get confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. |

Notes: This car was literally put together in the pits at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals by Mike Hamby and Dale Pulde. On the car's maiden run, Dale ran 6.10/183. After some adjustments to the spoiler, he came back out and ran 6.01/247. On his first official qualifying pass and third run ever on the car, Pulde blasted it to a 5.91/252.80. On Saturday, he ran an amazing 5.76/263 in the heat of the day (85 degrees). Then during the "Night of Fire," Dale ran 5.69/256.41 to take the pole. Pulde went on to win by beating Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.71/260. He ran 5.68/260 in the second round to beat John Collins. Another 5.69 at 257 beat Kenny's quicker 5.66 (Low ET) at 258 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" broke on the line, and Pulde took the victory. They next towed to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.97/252.38 qualified #13. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, with a 5.86/251. In the second round, Pulde's tire-smoking 6.56/152.18 lost to Bernstein's 5.74/249. The "High Life Warrior" picked up another win at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Dale qualified #1 with a 5.66/249.30. A first-round 5.84/236.84 beat Dominic Santucci, and in the semifinals, he beat Joe Amato's 5.98/221 with a 5.70/249.30. In the final, he beat Bernstein with a 5.90/247.25. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Dale ran 5.89/253.23 to qualify #12. Ed McCulloch fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 5.82/248.48. But in round two, he smoked the tires once again and lost to Don Prudhomme. The following week (July 7), he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1, and his 5.78/252 beat Tim Grose's 5.85/233 for yet another victory in the final. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.71/249 qualified #5, and in round one, his 5.78 advanced when Ron Correnti shut off with problems. But in round two, the car went into a wheelstand, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. He then went to St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, and he bagged that one as well, stopping John Pott in the final. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 by resetting both ends of the track record with a 5.73/251.39. He ran 5.87/238.09 he beat Jim Head in the opening round. A round two 5.83/244.56 beat Rick Johnson's 6.04/229 in the "Hawaiian." Another 5.83 at 245.23 stopped a tire-smoking John Force in the semifinal. Once again, he faced the red and white "Budweiser King" of Bernstein in the final. The two had a great race that saw Pulde's 5.81/250.69 come out second best to Kenny's 5.79/245. | At the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, Pulde qualified #2 with a 5.612/255.24. He Defeated #10 qualifier Graeme Cowin in round 1 with a 5.651/251.53 & #6 qualifier John Force in round 2 with a 5.722/246.44, but lost to #8 qualifier & eventual winner Tim Grose in the Semis. | Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. |

Notes: Won 1973 Winternationals and was runner-up at Gatornationals with a 230.76 national mph record. Ran this car until the Wonder Wagons. Yellow Wonder Wagon debuted at Indy 1973. Where were the white Wonder Wagon panel wagons raced? The Video link shows Don racing this car against Paula Murphy at Santa Pod 1973. Gainesville 3/73 record stood for three years! Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.33/228, but there was no way to know which of the three Cudas ran at that event. | Don had a great early season. It started at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for the AHRA Winternationals. Seventy-five cars showed for the 32-car nitro Funny Car field. Schumacher qualified #8 with a 6.61/208.81. In the first round, his 6.58/208.33 beat Mike Van Sant's off-pace 7.54 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. A second-round 6.57/214.38 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.83/200 in the "Lil Demon," He continued to improve in round three, where his 6.46/218.44 stopped Dave Uyehara, who broke a rear end in Larry Huff's car. Richard Tharp had his "Blue Max" go up in flames against him in the semifinals, while Don reset the AHRA ET record with his 6.42 at only 196. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final and won with a 6.44 (Low ET) at 220.04, while Liberman smoked the tires in his runner-up effort. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where 58 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Traction was horrible as the low qualifier was in at 7.18. Don qualified #14 with a 7.65/206.89 and then ran 7.64 over alternate Ron O'Donnell. In round two, his 7.43/210 beat Tom Hoover's 7.59/207. He improved a bunch in the semifinals, where his 7.26/218.44 stopped Jim Murphy's close 7.28/210. He met future superstar Kenny Bernstein driving Ray Alley's Charger in the final, and Schumacher's 7.18/220.58 rn (Low ET and Top Speed) prevailed for his fifth NHRA National event title. At the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland, Don's 7.02 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field. A 7.00/207 in round one beat Gary Henderson's 7.18/173 in the "Super Duster," but his second round 7.09/211 lost to Harlan Thompson's 6.93/205 in the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang. The wins continued at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He beat Art Ward in the first round with a 6.58/197.80. He had an easy run in round two and the semifinals, where Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian," lost fire. He met up with Liberman again in the finals, and his 6.55/215.82 scored the win over JJ's 6.81/216. The following week (March 18), he almost won the NHRA Gatornationals. He set Low ET at 6.34/228.42 in qualifying #1 and made his way to the final by running 6.48/230.76 (not Top Speed, but a new national record) over Roger Lindamood, another 6.34 at 226.70 over Leroy Goldstein's 6.61 in the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda and a 6.54 single in the semifinals when Ed McCulloch was unable to show. He faced Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega in the final, and it was a good race, but Foster took the victory with a 6.37/221 over Schumacher's 6.41/233.16 (just short of being backed up for the record)! The winning didn't come quite so easy after that. He was at Miami for a sixteen-car Funny Car show that had him qualify #7 with a 7.25/187.11. He soloed in round one when Paul Smith was shut off on the line with a fuel leak, but his 6.94/199.11 lost to Al Marshall's 6.80/220 in round two. Don won his third consecutive AHRA race when he beat Hoover with a 6.73 in the final at the rain-delayed Tulsa Grand American Race on April 11. His streak ended at the AHRA Green Valley race when he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Shortly after that (May 24), Schumacher was at Dragway 42 for the next AHRA Grand American race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.53. In round one, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 6.90/199.55 to advance. But in round two, his 7.15/211.76 fell to Gene Snow's 6.67/220. He also set Low ET in qualifying at the AHRA Springnationals held in Denver, where his 6.54 was almost two-tenths ahead of the second qualifier. A 6.76 in the opening round defeated Tom McEwen, but his car was shut off on the line for an oil leak in round two, and Don had to watch as Art Ward soloed into the semifinal. A week later, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He debuted his new Wonder Bread sponsor at its first national event. His 6.72 qualified #4, and his 6.79 beat alternate Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" Satellite in round one. In round two, his off-pace 7.32/191.08 lost to Jim Nicoll's 6.84/211. On July 4, he competed at Englishtown's Funny Car Spectacular event. Fourteen cars were there, and all ran the first round, with the four Low ET cars advancing into the semifinal. Don ran 6.93/199.55 to beat Al Bergler's out-of-shape Vega. Unfortunately, his ET did not advance into the final four. He came back out later for a consolation race with Fred Goeske that saw his 6.76/200.89 lose to Fred's 6.80/215. He was back at Englishtown on July 15 for the NHRA Summernationals. He "only" qualified #15 with a 6.62, and he smoked the tires to a 10.58 loss against McEwen's 6.87 in the first round. At the end of the month (July 29), he was at Rockford for its Manufacturer's Meet. He did not have a good day. In his first race, his 6.80 lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.79, and in his second race, Pulde's 6.75 in the M/T Grand Am beat his quicker 6.66. The car broke, and was unable to run round three. Schumacher then went to Atco for its World Funny Car Championships. This was an eight-car show, and he lost to Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega in the first round. He came back out later for a consolation race and set Low ET and 6.56. |

Notes: John Force entered the '81 season with a new sponsorship with Mountain Dew. John qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Frank Hawley and Tripp Shumake in rounds one and two before fouling against Billy Meyer in the semifinals. He qualified #9 at the Bakersfield March Meet at 6.494/220.04, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Dale Pulde. Force smoked the tires to a 6.91/168.85 that lost to Dale's 6.28/223. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, Force qualified #12 with a 6.100/246.57. The speed held the national record for six minutes until Prudhomme reset it at 247.25. Unfortunately, he lost to Dale Armstrong in the first round. He failed to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and the NHRA Western Regional at OCIR. The Funny Cars boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals in a move to generate more money into the class. At the NHRA Springnationals, his best of 6.27/231.36 was good for the second alternate. It was a long dry spell for Force, but he finally made the show at the NHRA Western Regional at Sacramento. His 6.43/233.17 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and his first-round 6.87/181.09 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.28/218. Still, he had made the show. Things went the wrong way at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where John's 6.63/218.44 failed to qualify (third alternate). Only six cars showed at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Indianapolis in July, so there was no doubt that he would qualify. He ran a 6.41 for the #3 spot in the show. Something must have "clicked" because Ric Deschner failed to show in the first round, and Force ripped off a 6.14/238.72 single. In the semifinals, he improved even more to a Low ET and Top Speed shot of 6.06/243.90 to beat Tom Anderson. All he had to do to win was to beat Craig Epperly in the final. That he did with another strong run of 6.12 while Epperly had trouble and slowed to 9.56. The best NHRA times were 6.049 at Indy and 246.57 at Gainesville. Handouts claim 5.99/247 in 81 or 82 in Citation. | ND reported the 5.99/247 at the Sept. '81 OCIR Parade of Champions, with a full semi-trailer pit shot. I missed it by a week on leave prior to permanent duty station in SoCal. I did get the handout picture in '82, though. - Joe Moore |

Notes: In 2002, Force became only the third motor sports driver to hit 100 career wins, joining NASCAR stars Richard Petty and David Pearson. This win also gave Force a victory in a record 16 consecutive seasons. Prior to Force, Bob Glidden held the drag racing record with 1986 career wins and Don "the Snake" Prudhomme held the Funny Car record with 36. |

Notes: This is my personal favorite of all the Jungle Jim cars. Built by Romeo Palamides of jet car fame in Chicago, painted by Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint, then lettered by the infamous "Mr. J," it was a pretty trick piece at the time. Previously, Jungle bought cars from various builders and even built a few himself at his West Chester, Pennsylvania shop. This was Jungle's first store-bought piece in a long time, and he decided to take it out to Ontario, California, for the 1972 NHRA SuperNationals. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know that one pass that weekend was Jungle's personal best at the time. - Berserko Bob Doerrer | Jim ran 6.69 at OCIR and was featured in the film Funny Car Summer. He ran a confirmed 6.54/218.97 in winning the Epping Funny Car Nationals on September 10, 1972, but was that the Vega or his Camaro? | The NHRA qualifying sheets from Ontario 1972 show that Jim was the 12th alternate (no time). However, Frank Rupert was the 9th alternate at 7.143. We need to validate this 6.44/233. |

Notes: The strip was so bad at Tucson on January 23 that Force qualified last in the eight-car field for the AHRA Winternationals with an 8.58. He lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in the first round. At Pomona, Times were a little more normal for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.08/243.90 to qualify #5. In the first round, he improved to a 6.01/238.09 to beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He round two, his 6.68/196.07 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.11/242. He then went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.03/243.24. But in the opening round against Tim Grose, the car went into heavy tire shake, and John shut it down to an 8.39/104. At the NHRA Gatornationals, John ran an excellent 5.88/240.64 to qualify #3. He beat Al Segrini in the first round with a 6.18/227.27. But in round two, he fouled away a 5.95 against Mike Dunn. Not only had he fouled, but to add insult to injury, he didn't realize it, made a hard run, and blew the motor in the lights. The car went into a fireball that was quickly put out, and he was OK. Early in April, he was at OCIR for its 64-car show. All cars were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In his first race, he smoked the tires and lost to Henry Harrison. In the second race, he did it again against Billy Meyer and shut down to 10.86. Needless to say, he did not run quick enough to reach the final. OCIR did it again the following week (April 9). The race was run in the same format. In the first race, John's 6.20/225.56 beat an engine-blowing Don Prudhomme. He set Low ET and Top Speed in his second race with a 5.91/248.61 that defeated Gary Densham. He lined up against Meyer in the final, and, unfortunately, he lost to Meyer's 6.06. NHRA held its Southern Nationals in Atlanta on April 17, and it was a hard field to break into as it was only an eight-car field. The drivers who failed to qualify included Ken Bernstein, Beadle, Meyer, Gary Burgin, Dale Pulde, and Mike Dunn. John made the show, running 5.94/241.93 for the #4 spot. In the first round, his 6.12/230.17 lost to Ken Veney's 6.03/233. John set Low ET and Top Speed of the Fuel Wars event at Fremont in April at 5.94/241 in the final but was considered the runner-up as Mike Miller won all three of his races. The other cars were the Pisano car and Dale Pulde. Winner of the OCIR Son of 64 Funny Car 4/83 with a 5.91. He was at Tulsa in early May for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.88 qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Jim White in the first round. Shortly after, he was in Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show; he was the first alternate at 6.10/237.46. At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.08/239.36 qualified #12. An opening round 6.01/246.52 beat Bernstein's 6.25/237, but John could not stop and crashed the car into the catch net. The team repaired the car for round two but smoked the tires and shut it off to 10.37/69.82 in a loss to Mark Oswald's 6.18/241 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified in the field's top half (#4) with a 6.23/215.32, but he improved to 6.07/240.01 in the opening round over White. But again, he fell to that dreaded tire smoke in the semifinal, where he lost to Tom McEwen. Early in July, he traveled to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. His 6.06/233.16 qualified #7 for the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.08/240 lost to Mark Oswald's controversial 5.62/240.At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, his 5.94/243.90 qualified #4.He ran 6.01/243.24 in the first round to beat Dunn's 6.11/229 in the "Hawaiian." A great light combined with a 6.03/241 in the second round defeated Veney's quicker 5.96/245.Prudhomme encountered tire shake against him in the semifinal and shut off while Force advanced with a 6.01/247. His string of 6.0s continued into the finals, but the 6.00/245.23 he ran finished runner-up to Oswald's 5.92/251.At the end of the month (July 30), he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.22/232.55. He and Beadle had a really close first-round race that saw John's 6.22/238.09 beat the "Blue Max's" 6.22/239. In the semifinal, he fell off to 6.40/193.13, losing to Anderson's 6.16/220. John won a summer match race event at OCIR with a 5.89 in the final. He also ran 5.78 at 249.30 at the OCIR World Finals, ending as runner-up to John Lombardo. He became the 8th and final entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 250.69 pass at NHRA Indianapolis on September 3, 1983. Good stuff on the NHRA tour with competitive runs all over and best times of 5.782 at the OCIR Finals and the 250.69 at Indy. | Video link from AHRA Tucson 1983. |

Notes: Raymond Beadle was having a tough time at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. It took him three passes to qualify, and his 6.321/242.58 got him the #13 spot. In the first round, he smoked the tires to an 8.07 and lost to John Force. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.91/244.56. He improved to a 5.89/246.57 over Tom McEwen in the first round. In round two, his 6.19/213.77 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.93/241 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The following week, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.43/215.82. Beadle beat Billy Meyer and Gary Burgin to gain a final round berth against Kenny Bernstein. In the final, his 6.39/215.97 finished runner-up to Bernstein's 6.21/227. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and, unfortunately, Raymond failed to qualify for the show. He was back in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17. It was another eight-car field, and once again, he failed to qualify with a 6.31 best. Things went better a week later (April 24) at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Beadle qualified #2 with a 5.99 behind Dale Pulde's 5.98 (Low ET). The two worked their way into the final, where Pulde's 6.11 got the victory over the "Blue Max's" 6.20. Raymond got another runner-up finish at the next IHRA event, the World Nationals at Norwalk, where Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car stopped him in the final. Beadle also failed to qualify at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his 6.13/241.93 was far short of the 6.08 it took to make the eight-car field. Oswald got him again at the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol. Beadle qualified #3, and a solo 6.65/187.89 made it past a broken Al Segrini in round one, but he lost to Oswald in the semifinals. Beadle won his 11th NHRA National event when he won the Springnationals at Columbus. He had set Low ET and a track record 5.88 at 238.64 in qualifying #1 for the field. He then ran 5.97/235.60 over Ken Veney and 6.28/180.36 over a broken Segrini. His opponent, Gary Burgin, smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Raymond's 6.10/228.42 advanced. Once again, he faced Oswald for the title, and his 6.95/238.09 got him the victory over Mark's 6.27/235. He then won the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan, beating Bernstein in the final. He set Top Speed with his 251.39 pass. The following week (July 17) found the "Blue Max" team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Beadle qualified #6 with a 5.95/233.76. A quick-leaving 6.14/236.84 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.10/238 in the opening round, but in round two, the car ruptured an oil pan while staging against Don Prudhomme. The next NHRA race was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. It was an eight-car show, and Beadle's 6.08/238.09 qualified #4. Both he and Force ran 6.22 (Raymond at 239.38) in their first-round race, but Force got to the other end first. Beadle did not race at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, as he chose to race at Spokane instead for the AHRA World Finals that was run the same weekend. It was just an eight-car field, and he qualified #2 behind Force. The two of them would make their way into the final. An easy 6.26/238.72 in the opening round defeated a tire-smoking Gary Densham, and in the semifinal, Raymond's 5.92/241.93 beat Tom McEwen, who also smoked the tires. It looked like Force would that an easy win in the final as he had run 5.79 twice during eliminations. But Beadle picked up to a 5.78/247.93 to win the race over Force's 5.91/220. It had to be upsetting for the "Blue Max" team to be watching the Big Bud Shootout at Indy on September 4 and not being a part of the show. The exclusive eight-car show was held during qualifying and only the top eight qualifiers from the past year ran. But the next day, Beadle's team showed them what they could do. A 5.83/251.39 qualified #3, and Beadle set Low ET in the opening round with his 5.804 at a booming 254.95 that beat Paul Gordon. In round two, his 5.91/245.23 beat Hawley's 6.02/235. But his quicker 5.87/247.93 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.90/254 in the semifinal. The next weekend (September 11), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. Beadle ran 5.89/250 to qualify low for the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinal before Oswald's 5.83/253 put his 5.84/252 on the trailer in a close race. Bristol was his next stop for the IHRA Fallnationals. Beadle ran well again, running 5.84/252.10 to qualify #2 behind Oswald's 5.74/253. This was a critical race for the "Max." Going into this race, Beadle led the IHRA Funny Car points chase by 54 points over Oswald. They both survived their first-round races, but Beadle smoked the tires in the semifinal and lost to Dale Pulde. Oswald went on to win the race and the IHRA Funny Car points Championship. Even with the loss, the "Blue Max" was running some numbers; 5.7's were becoming more and more frequent as well as 250 mph runs. Case in point, at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 2, Beadle's 5.779/251.39 claimed the pole for the eight-car field. He got lucky in the opening round when his crossed-up 6.31/240.64 advanced over Bernstein's troubled 13.13. In the semifinal, he was back on pace with a 5.767/249.30 that defeated Hawley's 5.95/220. He faced Billy Meyer in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Billy's 5.757/245 get the victory over Raymond's 5.78/246.57. Raymond became the 7th member of the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car with a 251.39 pass on July 10, 1983, at IHRA Milan, Michigan. |

Notes: Alley literally tore the roof off his three-week-old Charger at Irwindale on August 25. According to the 9/01/67 National Dragster, this occurred when his throttle stuck during a qualifying pass, resulting in a wide-open run that ended a full 1/8th mile past the finish line. He turned Low ET of 8.19 of the event in the process and returned to participate in eliminations, topless. - RT | Ran 8.62 and 8.77 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DC | This car took a long time to build. Alley had wanted to have the first Charger Funny Car, but problems held the car back and it actually took 18 months to get finished. The frame was designed by Ray and Bob Brown, but the final welding was done by Don Long. The wheelbase was 118" and it used an Olds rear axle with 3.90 gears. Of course, Alley’s company, Engine Masters, built the TorqueFlite transmission. The engine was an early 354 Hemi built by Dave Cole. Ed Pink line-bored the block. The crank was a standard Chrysler unit. M/T rods and Venolia 7:1 pistons were used. Chet Herbert supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Lockerman with stock 2" Chrysler intake valves. The exhausts were 2 1/8" Donovans. Tom Jobe of the Surfers built the blower running at 28% overdrive. Hilborn injection sat up top. The car was run on 70% nitro and Ray was willing to tip the can if needed. The car weighed 2,200 lbs. and within weeks of being done he ran early times of 8.46/179.98. Ray was at Fontana on Jan 7 for an eight-car show. It was a hard show to get into as 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight positions. Ray beat the "Whinemaker" in the first round, with an 8.11/180.72. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 9.08/146.57 when Marv Eldridge fouled. In the final, he was up against "Dyno" Don Nicholson. Ray ran an 8.52/178.21 for the runner-up money as Don's 8.08/172 took the win. |

Notes: Raymond won his first championship in 1979. He had two wins and three runner-up finishes. Photo from Byron Dragway's Manufacturer's Meet. Did Raymond run 5.96 somewhere this year? Confirmed 5.996/244.56 NHRA bests at Indy US Nationals 9/79. | Beadle started the season by qualifying #1 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. The team made it into the semifinals before losing to Gary Burgin. At the NHRA Winternationals, they again qualified #1. This time with a 6.07 that held up for Low ET. Beadle then ran 6.18, 6.17, and 6.27 to reach the final to run Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, Raymond smoked the tires and lost to Hoover's 6.29. The "Blue Max" qualified well at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where a 6.18 qualified #2. Beadle's best run in eliminations was a first-round 6.21, but in round two, a 6.69/226 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in a twin tire smoker. The "Max" broke in the semifinals, giving Gordie Bonin a free ride into the finals. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 6.05/240.00 (Low ET & Top Speed) qualified #1. But in round one, Beadle smoked the tires to a 7.01 loss against Dale Pulde's 6.32. Things went their way at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There Beadle qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.13. A first-round 6.17 advanced when Frank Oglesby broke, and in the semifinals, a 6.16/233.16 beat Shirl Greer. In the finals, he unloaded a 6.09/238.09 (Low ET & Top Speed) for the win over Paul Smith's runner-up 6.37/190. The NHRA Cajun Nationals featured an eight-car field as well. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.30/234.37. He beat Hoover's 6.44/223 in the first round, with a 6.37/229.00, but in the semifinals, a bad coil wire kept the "Max" from firing, and John Force got a free ride into the final. Raymond made it into the finals at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.13/238.09. In the opening round, another 6.13 at 231.95 beat Dick Rosberg's 6.35/212. In round two, his 6.61/223.88 beat a tire-smoking Jim Adolph. The semifinals saw Raymond make an easy pass when Colson broke on the line. He faced Burgin in the final, but his 6.69/207.37 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 6.49/239. The team then went to Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Both he and Burgin broke in the first round, with Beadle coasting through first for the win. Unfortunately, the "Blue Max" could not run in the semifinals and was replaced by Tom Prock. From there, the team went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Once again, Beadle qualified #2, with a 6.18/234.98. A first-round 6.37 beat Pete Williams' 6.61 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," but a semifinal 6.87 lost to Pulde's 6.49. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late June, Ray qualified #7 in the eight-car field and then ran a great 6.31 in the first round over Simon Menzies. He made it into the final, where he faced Billy Meyer. The "Blue Max" slowed to an off-pace 6.86 to take the runner-up spot to Meyer's 6.51. Beadle took a win at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown on July 15. He qualified #4 in the show with a 6.18/230.76. He beat Meyer in the first round with a 6.17, and a second-round 6.09/233.16 beat Pulde's 6.11/236. In the semifinals, Raymond's 6.18/235 beat Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car. In the final, he ran Force's Corvette. Beadle's 6.37/232.55 took his third NHRA National event victory over John's 6.46/212. The team did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals. |

Notes: After Johnny Loper's Arrow body burnt up at the IHRA Springnationals, Loper replaced it with this Mustang. It was run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals where Tripp placed it on the "bump" for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.29/233.16 qualified #14 and an improved 6.23 in the first round, beat Bernstein's 6.28. Shumake got an easy single in round two when Tom McEwen was unable to run, but, in the semifinals, he lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max.”He won the Byron Funny Car race in July. In the first round, he even beat Don Prudhomme with a 6.45/230.76. He faced Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the final and Colson crossed the centerline giving Tripp the victory. The next stop was at Dragway 42, West Salem, Ohio for the AHRA Grandnationals. Tripp made it into the semifinals before losing to eventual winner Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle.” Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the PHR Championships. Yet the next week he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals where he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.11/240.64. In the first round, he slowed to 6.29 in a loss to Gary Burgin's 6.20. Then came Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.07/244.56 qualified well enough, but in the first round, he went into hard tire shake and shut off against Kosty Ivanof. Seattle was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Fallnationals. Tripp qualified #13 with a 6.29/236.84. Pat Foster fouled against him in the opening round and Shumake's 6.26/207.85 advanced. In round two he ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.23/225.56, but it wasn't enough to beat Colson's 6.02/238. The team ended the season on a high note at the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway. Tripp qualified #8 with a 6.37/230.17. The track was bad as everyone seemed to be smoking their tires. In round one, Pulde boiled the hides and Tripp's 6.54/229.59 advanced. In round two, both he and Beadle smoked heavily with Shumake's 6.60/227.27 coming out on top over Beadle's 6.74/225. The semifinals saw more of the same, it was smoke city, but Tripp recovered first in his race against John Force. His 6.88/231.86 got him the win. In the final, he faced Gordie Bonin. Tripp slipped and slid to 6.91/213.27 in a runner-up finish to Bonin's 6.53/234. All in all, it was a good season for the team as they finished seventh in NHRA points. |

Notes: Gary's one-year sponsor from Pete Rose Candy Bars. Burgin started the season by qualifying #2 at the AHRA Winternationals and going to the final, where he lost to Tom Hoover. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, his 6.37/230 qualified #15. He lost to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" in the first round. The NHRA Gatornationals had Burgin run 6.35/238.09 to qualify #10. In round one, he smoked the tires to a 7.72/125 loss to Raymond Beadle's 6.21/239 in the "Blue Max." The following week(March 18), he went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car but failed to reach the final. He also ran at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Dixie Nationals in April but failed to reach the final. In May, he won the "Jungle Jim" Memorial (Dutch Classic) race at Maple Grove. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/233.16 before stopping Bruce Larson's 6.42/219 in the final with a 6.33/231.36. He then won his second NHRA career race at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.19/237.46 qualified #7. in the opening round, Burgin's 6.41/233.16 defeated Tom McEwen's 6.53/214. A round two 6.35/235.60 beat Hoover's 6.40/237. Al Segrini's car caught fire on the line in the semifinal, so Burgin soloed with a 6.51/233. He faced Beadle in the final, and Gary's 6.49/239.36 got the victory over the "Max's" 6.69/207. Shortly after that, he was at Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Unfortunately, Burgin broke in the first round, against Beadle. Gary won the NHRA Springnationals this year. He ran well on the NHR tour, but not earth-shattering. His best numbers were from qualifying #14 at Indy with a 6.120/244.56. Is this the Monza, rebodied? |
