Notes: This had to be Gary's best season behind the wheel of a flopper. Although it sure didn't start that way. He was at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race, where all the cars made three runs. In his first race, his 6.67/204.08 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.55/207. In his second race, he was to run Roger Garten, but Burgin's car failed to fire. He finally won his third race, where his 6.63 beat a tire-smoking Bob Pickett in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He ran at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson, where he qualified #3 with a 6.47/205.47. He lasted until the second round when his 7.02 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.99. The following week, he was at Beeline for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #1 with a 6.27/233.76 and an opening-round 6.47/220.04 beat Twig Zeigler. Shirl Greer fouled against him in round two, so Burgin took it easy and advanced with a 7.11/175.43. He set Top Speed at 236.84 in the semifinals while running 6.28 to beat Dale Emery. He faced Prudhomme in the final. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline, and the "Snake" got the win. Burgin qualified #1 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.29/223.32, but the car went into a wheelstand in his first-round race, and he lost to Tom Prock. At Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals, Gary again made it into the final. He made runs of 6.59 and 6.46 to meet with Prock; this time, he took a little nap, and his 6.43/222.22 finished runner-up to Tom's 6.52/219. He was at Rockingham early in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did set Top Speed at 228.00. On May 23, he was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Burgin made it into the semifinal before losing to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 6.49 in the "Blue Max" with a slightly quicker 6.48. Gary lost to Beadle at the NHRA Springnationals, as well. Gary qualified #8 with a 6.53 and a first-round 6.59/214 beat Tom Hoover's 6.60/218. The two met in the second round, and Burgin smoked the tires while Raymond went 6.60/219 for the win. The next week (June 20), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He won the race by beating R.C. Sherman's 6.58/226 in the final with a 6.29/233.32. Earlier in the day, Gary reset the IHRA ET record to 6.14. On July 4, he was at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. Gary won this one as well, and he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/236.84. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He ran well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals as well. A 6.22 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. A first-round 6.18 beat Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. In round two, a 6.29 beat Pee Wee Wallace's "Virginian," but in the semifinals, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. Opponent McEwen cruised into the final with a 6.62/202. Gary won Englishtown's Funny Car and Halter Top Nationals later in July. He ran a best of 6.52/226 and beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. In August, he won the Race of Champions event at Maple Grove. He set Top Speed and low et at 6.27/228 (track record). In the final, he beat R.C. Sherman. Surprisingly, he failed to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The front end came up on every one of his qualifying passes, and he had to get out of it. He then competed at the IHRA US Open. He qualified #1 with a 6.38/230.76 but failed to reach the finals. The next win is the one that makes the year. At Indy for the US Nationals, Gary qualified #4 with a 6.127/233.76. A first-round 6.123/221.67 beat John Lombardo, while in round two, a 6.21/238.09 (Top Speed) beat Prock's 6.52. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 6.21/231.95 when Beadle's car had fuel injector problems and shut off. In the final, he faced Prudhomme's all-conquering Monza. Gary was up to the task, beating the "Snake's" 6.46/226 with a 6.25/237.46. There was no love lost between Prudhomme and Burgin at this time, so the win was especially sweet. Shortly after that, he went to Epping, New Hampshire, for its Funny Car Nationals. Gary looked like he was well on his way to another win as he beat Dale Creasy in the first round, with a 6.49/212. Another 6.49 at 229 (Top Speed) beat Fred Dename in round two, and a third-round (32 car show) 6.40/207 advanced when George Johnson broke. Unfortunately, the win was costly as he blew his engine and was replaced by Al Bergler for the semifinal. On September 26, he made the final at the IHRA All-American Championships at Bristol. Unfortunately, the car failed to fire, and Larry LaDue soloed for the victory. Formerly listed a 6.11 for this year, but we need confirmation on that.

Notes: Al qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.30/280.28. In the first round, he beat Gary Bolger with a 5.28/273.97. In round two, he ran a 5.30/277.52 but lost to Jim Epler's 5.27/272. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Hofmann continued to qualify well, running a 5.38/265.56 for the #7 spot. However, he lost in the first round, to Gary Densham. The next race on the NHRA schedule was at Houston for the Supernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.29/271.90. He made it into the semifinals by beating Bolger in the first round, with a 5.30/272.14, and in round two, a 5.28/273.30 beat Del Worsham. In the semis, a 5.23/273.30 finished second best to Cruz Pedregon's track record 5.10/272. A 5.25/277.17 qualified #2 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 10.31/74.14 loss to Bolger's 5.23/275. Rockingham hosted the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Al qualified for the eight-car show with a 5.31/277.09. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore's 5.45/270 with a 5.34/271.65. In the semifinals, both he and Mark Oswald ran 5.40 (Al at 272), but Mark got the win. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #9 with a 5.38/276.66. He really stepped it up for the first-round, running a 5.22/281.25, but that wasn't good enough to advance, as John Force ran a 5.19/269 to get the win. Al was smiling after the next NHRA race, as he won the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.30/280.37 and improved to a 5.25/273.14 in winning his first-round race over Jerry Caminito's 5.67/231. In the second round, another 5.30 at 273.97 beat Chuck Etchells, and in the semifinals, a 5.38/274.22 beat a motor blowing Force at 5.41/269. He met Bazemore in the final, and Whit smoked the tires while Hofmann recorded a 5.40/279.67 victory. He repeated at the very next race, winning the NHRA Springnationals to make it two in a row. There he ran 5.29/275.65 to qualify #4. A first-round 5.35/273.14 beat Norm Wilding, and in round two, a 5.31/274.47 advanced when Gordon Mineo fouled. Al was sharp on the tree in the semifinals when his 5.28/273.22 took out Etchells' quicker 5.26/278. A final round 5.31 at only 263.31 got the win when Pedregon fouled. He almost made it three in a row when he made it into the finals at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Al qualified on the pole with a 5.34 (Low ET) at 274.22. He advanced past the first-round with a 5.45/270.67 when Troy Ray broke. In round two, a 5.43/266.50 stopped Worsham's 5.58/272, and in the semifinals, a 5.41/263.85 beat Mark Oswald's off pace 5.84/196. In the final, he ran Force, and John's 5.34/278 got the victory over Al's 5.42/264.70. His luck ran out at the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. He didn't run badly there; he just didn't make it into another final. A 5.24/264.08 qualified #3, and he ran a strong 5.21/277.86 in the first round, to beat R.C. Sherman, but in round two, he smoked the tires and lost to Worsham's 5.32/277.

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight cars. But at one time, he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of fuel funny cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Bros. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides-built cars, including a front-hinge flip-top funny car. - BS | Don Schumacher really started to run well when crew chief John Hogan came on board in July. Things didn't start so well when Don drove the car into the ditch during the Super Stock Nationals, and the team showed up at Detroit on July 26 with the front of the car wearing primer. A blown transmission on a warm-up run was followed by an off-pace 8.90 in the opening round of the eight-car show that lost to Bruce Larson. The next day (July 26), Detroit ran them again, only now they expanded the field to twelve cars. In the first round, Don's 7.82/182.18 beat Bob Fulp in the "Limefire." He got to solo in round two and made an easy 13.02 pass. In the semi-final, he had trouble and shut down to 11.73/78 in a loss to Larson's 8.27/166. Sunday was the last day for the three-day event at Detroit, and this time Schumacher went all the way. An off-pace 8.42/170.77 defeated Fulp's equally troubled 8.46/172 in the first round. In the second round, his 7.89/181.80 took out Mike Burkhart's 7.91/153. He got some revenge over Larson in the semi-final by running 7.78/183 over Bruce's 7.79/182. In the final, he faced Kelly Chadwick, and his 7.93/184.42 got the victory over Chadwick's 8.27/145.

Notes: Larry was at Lions on January 28 for the second half of its Winternationals. Fullerton's 9.27/138.03 qualified for the 32 car show. He lost to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round of eliminations. He was at Lions on June 29 for a double Funny Car show. There were two eight-car fields, with those that didn't qualify quick enough for the first eight fell into a second eight-car field. Fullerton failed to qualify for the quick eight and well as the second eight. He did get into the show as an alternate, but his 9.52/122.95 lost to Gene Modlin's 9.36/129. On August 3, he was at Irwindale for its Gold Cup Championships. He fouled against eventual winner Gas Ronda in the first round and shut off to 10.30-99.53. As far as I know, Fullerton ran SOHC Ford's in his cars until his Maverick switched to an early Hemi in Mid-'70. Larry ran 8.46 at Irwindale.

Notes: Tom was on top of his game in 1968; his best time of 7.52 set early in the year would have been a lot lower if the car had not been totaled in a crash at Virginia Beach, the same place he had run his Top Speed of 202 in May. But in June he had just finished running 201 and his chute failed to release. He hit the brakes hard until the master cylinder let go. Grove ended up skidding sideways into a tree and demolishing the Mustang. He finished out the season with his 1967 car. Before the crash, he had beaten the best. On April 7, he had a hiccup at Kingston where he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super 'Cuda" in a best of three match. Reyes won their first race with an 8.12/187 when Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand. There had never been a 7-second Funny Car run at Kingston until their second race when both ran sevens. Grove's 7.99/187.50 prevailed over Reyes' quicker 7.98. In the final race, Larry got the holeshot and his 8.10 went on to win the match over Grove's quicker 7.98. On April 14 he beat Don Nicholson in a best of three match. Another match race victory came at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 3. There he stopped Arnie Beswick three straight. His times were 5.15/148.50 over a fouling Beswick, followed by a track record 5.05/150 and a 5.35/140. He was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational, but after the first-round it was rained out. He had run 8.63/184.42 (Top Speed) in a first-round solo, and he was Aquasco's track mph record holder at 187.88. Tom won the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18. He ran 7.79/189.06 over Roger Lindamood (8.10/179), and in the semifinals, he reset both ends of the track record with a 7.64/194.38 over Roy Gay who shut off. In the final, a 7.65/192.70 stopped Jim Liberman's 7.85/182. On June 8, he beat the "Hemi-Cuda" of Fred Goeske three straight at Capitol. In the first race, his 7.71 at a new track record speed of 196.92 beat Goeske's 7.96/170. The speed was 5 mph faster than the old track record. Tommy got the ET record as well in their second race with his 7.64 at 190.66 beating the 'Cuda's 7.99/178. A final 7.76/196.92 finished up the match. He ran his lowest ET of the year at a match race at Cecil County against Liberman on June 19. He beat Jim in the first race with a track record 7.52 at 197.36. In the second race, a 7.81/193.12 did the deed, winning the match. - Ron Howard

Notes: In January '80, ND reported that at the Fremont Opener, Raymond Beadle ran 5.92/244. Beadle ran at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. The car turned out to be a handful there as he lost to John Force in the opening round, where the car went into a wheelstand, and he had to shut down. He again was forced to shut down in his second race when he got out of shape against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." At Pomona, the team waived its points for the NHRA Winternationals. Beadle qualified #3 with a 6.06/243.90. He went into a wheelstand in the first round and shut off, giving Colson the win. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9, and the "Blue Max" ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.24/233.76 to win over Billy Meyer's close 6.27/230. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.13 and, in the first round, beat Tom McEwen with a 5.99/238.09. In the second round, a 6.06/227.27 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/233. A piston-burning 6.11/207.85 beat Tom Ridings' 6.46/180 in Joe Pisano's car in the semifinals. This put him into the final against Don Prudhomme, who had just run 5.93 in the other semifinal race. Beadle tried hard in the final, but his 6.17/231.95 was good for the runner-up spot to the "Snake's" 5.98/238. He went to Darlington the following week (March 23) and cleaned up. The only thing he didn't get was the pole. He qualified #2 with a 6.42 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28 beat a tire-smoking Burgin, and a 6.29 beat John Force in the semifinals. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. Raymond capped off the weekend by running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.06/237.46 to win the event. He then set Low ET and Top Speed while winning the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley on March 30. The win put the "Blue Max" into the lead in NHRA points. Things did not go well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where the team failed to qualify. A best of 6.23/238.09 failed to better the 6.18 "bump." Raymond toured England this year, too. He came out with a new Omni to run the second half of the season.

Notes: Tim ran his Corvette at Pomona and Gainesville, but he debuted his new Trans Am at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #4. A first-round 5.94/241.28 beat John Collins, and he got past the second round to face Billy Meyer in the semis. A 5.99/243.90 lost to eventual winner Meyer's 5.88/247. He qualified for the tough eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. That was good; what was bad was that he qualified in the #5 spot, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Oswald, which Grose lost. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals on June 10. Tim qualified #6 with a 5.90/247.25. He fouled in the first round, against Gary Southern. Grose then went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 6.01 qualified #6. He lasted until the second round before losing to Dale Pulde. In Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.87/253.52 but failed to reach the finals. The Summernationals at Englishtown was NHRA's next stop, and once again, Tim qualified easily, running a 5.81 for the #7 spot in the show. He beat Dale Barlet in the first round, but smoked the tires in round two and lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Tim's best times with the Trans am were a great 5.782/257.87 run at NHRA Brainerd. He had run 5.780 in Gainesville with the Corvette. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore

Notes: Eddie was the early number one qualifier on Friday at the PRO Winternationals at Beeline, 1/14/77. He ran 6.24/231.95, which the local paper noted was the quickest car on the grounds for a time, even among the top fuel cars. (Jeb Allen eventually went 6.02/238.72 to lead the fuelers). Dale Emery was number two at 6.33, and Gary Burgin was number 3 at 6.42. The car ran well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Pauling qualified with a 6.29, then when eliminations began, his times dropped two-tenths. An opening round 6.09 beat Henry Harrison and another 6.09 in round two beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. Pauling set Low ET with a semifinal 6.03 that took out Gordie Bonin. The final was run late and he went up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was an entertaining final as Pauling had the body blow off the chassis, and it seemed like Pulde had an easy win, but Pulde got out of shape and crossed the centerline. Eddie's 13.70 won the race over Pulde, who was disqualified. It didn't end there as tempers flared between Pulde's car owner, Mike Hamby, and track management. The following week (March 13), the team was supposed to race at the NHRA Gatornationals, but their win at Bakersfield had been a costly one. The team had used up one aluminum block, 40 pistons, and the Monza body. They didn't have enough parts to run at Gainesville. The Monza body became a Plymouth Arrow in April.

Notes: Former Whipple & McCulloch Cuda. How would you like to go to a drag race and leave with a funny car? That's exactly what Jim Murphy did. He attended the Fremont New Year's race, and Ed McCulloch was there with his new Demon. A deal was struck for Jim to buy his highly successful '71 'Cuda. Go figure; some people are happy with a T-shirt. Since Murphy still didn't have his Funny Car driver's license, the car was driven at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals by Butch Maas. They didn't do too badly, qualifying #2 and going a couple of rounds. Things went even better at the Bakersfield March Meet, where Jim had McCulloch drive, and Ed won the race. In July, Jim qualified #2 at Tri-City Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division 3 race with a 6.59. But his opening round 7.02 lost to Al Marshall's 7.00. Jim was the low qualifier at Ontario at 6.334/231.95 (his best NHRA national event times of the year). He went 6.537 at 220.58 at Indy.

He lasted until the second round at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as well. There he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he barely made the show, qualifying #16 with a 5.92/249.58. A consistent 5.94/246.17 in the first round, beat Segrini, but once again he lost in round two. Notes: Mike and Joe had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals, where Mike qualified #2 with a 5.34/279.85 (Top Speed). He had a bit of a snooze in the first round, and his 5.42/269.13 lost to Jim White's 5.46/258. They went on to the Supernationals, where they lost in the first round once again. At the Gatornationals, Mike set track records of 5.28/280.19 in qualifying #1, but for the third straight race, they lost in round one, this time to R.C. Sherman. Things went much better in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.48/266.35 qualified #5. In the first two rounds, he beat Tony McCallum and low qualifier Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.53 with a 5.48/263.15. In the final, he met newcomer Eric Reed. Reed smoked the tires, and Dunn claimed his first win of the season with a 5.60/264.08. The next event on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Mike used a 5.31/280.98 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He lost to Art Hendey in round one. Mike took his second win at the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.44/272.23 (Top Speed). He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, and in the second round, he got a solo because his competition, Whit Bazemore, was unable to run. Both he and Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, but Mike's 5.83/254 came out on top. In the final, he faced John Martin, but Martin broke, and Dunn's 5.63/268.25 got the victory. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals. Mike qualified #4 with a 5.33/274.97. He beat Martin in the first round. In the second round, both he and Chuck Etchells smoked the tires, and Chuck got the win. Mike and the Joe Pisano team did not run in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were back on tour for the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. Dunn ran 5.44 to qualify #10, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.68/255.46 qualified #5 in the thin air. He beat Jim Murphy in round one before losing to Kenny Bernstein's 5.62 with a 5.65 in round two. At Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals, Mike qualified #12 with a 5.59/265.33 but lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. Also ran 5.397 at the 1989 US Nationals. The car was deep PURPLE. The best NHRA National Event times were the 5.281/280.98. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Three successive class bests in 1973: 6.35 and 6.27 at Indy (won Funny Car Eliminator over the Ace in the final), then a fantastic 6.16 at the Supernationals. When Don didn't like his new '74 US Army Vega, this car was pulled out of the garage, painted in US Army colors, and won Indy again. 6.29 Green Valley | In 1973, Prudhomme singlehandedly won the team title for Plymouth over a 16-car field at the 5th Annual Manufacturer's Meet at Rockford, Ill. - RT | Photo from 1973 AHRA Grand Nationals, Dragway 42. | Early in '73, Don was still racing his Top Fuel car. He didn't enter his Funny Car in competition at the AHRA or the NHRA Winternationals; he ran in Top Fuel instead. But on March 11, he showed up at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals with his 'Cuda. He qualified #9 and, in the first round, set Low ET of the meet with a 6.45 to beat low qualifier Tom Hoover who ran 6.56. In round two, he faced Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega panel. Don fouled away a 6.60/209.30, giving Brown an easy 7.09 run into the semifinals. The following week, he was at NHRA Gatornationals but was back in the top fuel car. He was back in the Funny Car for the Seattle Northwest Open in April. He ran a 6.43 to qualify, but in the first round, he lost a rod while doing his burnout. On April 11, he was at the AHRA Grand American in Tulsa. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 6.50/226.13 qualified #1. He had a clutch explode during eliminations and hit the guardrail, thus ending his day. The car was wearing black primer from being repaired when he showed up at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships on April 21. He set Top Speed at 230.76, but after making a first-round solo, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified while racing Gerry Glenn. The following week, he was in Seattle for its Northwest Open. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.54/229 (Top Speed), but while doing his burnout for his first-round race against Rich Rogers, a rod let go, and he had to shut down. There were no shortages of places for Don to run as everywhere he raced, a crowd followed. He was at Green Valley for the AHRA Grand American early in May. He qualified #1 at 6.37 and then beat Mart Higginbotham and Dale Pulde (MT Grand Am). He then defeated Don Schumacher in the semifinal with an engine blowing 6.29. He would face Tom Grove in the final. Grove's car failed to fire, so Prudhomme limped it down the track for the win.

Notes: The first time Emery drove this car in competition was at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the field. Emery set a track record at Edgewater Park National Open at 6.53/230.76 and ran 6.38/231.95 at Bristol. | Dale won the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 6. He set both Low ET and Top Speed at 6.44/222.22 and beat Pee Wee Wallace in the final with a 6.48/183.29. At the NHRA Division 3 Opener, he won again. This time he set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.44/228.42 while beating Jim Paoli. The second Division 3 race was held at National Trail, and Dale qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.94. In the first round, he improved to 6.73 but lost to a holeshot by Al Segrini, whose 6.76 got the win. On May 24, Emery was at Dragway 42 in Ohio for the AHRA Grand American. The car wasn't up to speed, but Dale beat Tom Hoover's ailing Satellite in the first round with an 8.01. In round two, a 7.12/162.45 lost to Dean LaPole's "pure" Chevy-powered car at 6.78/193. He qualified #5 back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car in the first round with a 6.63, but in round two, he slowed to 7.28/173.74 that lost to Prudhomme's troubled 7.02/216. A 6.61 qualified #14 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. In the first round, he advanced with a 6.56/228.42 when Russell Long's Charger broke. In round two, he picked up the pace to 6.46/229.00, beating Jim Nicoll's 6.83. Dale lost in the semifinals when his car broke against Leroy Goldstein. On July 25, Emery was at Maple Grove for its All-American race. It was a sixteen-car show, and he made it into the final before being stopped by Ed McCulloch. A 6.63/217.91 in the final lost to Ed's 6.45/225. Dale was runner-up again, this time to Paul Radici, on July 29 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City Dragway in Michigan. He ran 6.61/221.13 (Top Speed) in the final but lost to Paul's 6.54/209. At the NHRA Grandnationals in early August, Emery qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.71/216.34. A first-round 6.73/216 beat Harlan Thompson; in the semifinals, he had a great leave, and his 6.71/215.35 beat Goldstein's 6.70/218 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In the final, he went up against Frank Mancuso and took his first NHRA victory with a 6.70/219.50 (Top Speed) that beat Mancuso's 6.80. Emery qualified #8 in the 32-car show with a 6.60/222.77 at AHRA's National Challenge. He improved to 6.56/216 in the first round while beating John Dekker's 6.66/225. In round two, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.88 with a 6.61/216, but an off-pace 6.91/206 in round three lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/197. With 50 FCs attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Dale ran 6.45/224.43 to qualify #10. A first-round 6.69/207 lost to Jim Liberman's 6.41. On September 8, he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round against Paul Day. Dale set a new IHRA Speed record in the final while winning at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Nationals. His final round 6.38/231.95 beat Raymond Beadle who smoked the tires in Don Schumacher's Vega. His speeds were real; in round two, he ran 6.48/225.56 over Shirl Greer and, in the semifinals, hit 227.27 while beating Billy Meyer. He was in the final at the next IHRA race as well, the US Open Nationals at Rockingham, where he runner-upped to Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. Dale finished runner-up to Tom McEwen at NHRA Ontario, where he ran amazing 6.280/229.59 best times. Info and times from National Dragster, 2/01/74.

Notes: Pulde first drove Mickey Thompson's Grand Am at St. Louis in early May. He made his debut in the car a successful one as he won over an eight-car field, stopping Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered Vega in the final. Shortly after this, he was at the AHRA Grand American at Green Valley, but he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in round two. He was at the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 24, but the car broke in the first round, against Jim Nicoll. Pulde went to Century 21 Raceway in Denver for the AHRA Springnationals on June 3. He used an Ed Pink-built stock-stroke 426 Hemi for this race, and it paid off. Dale beat Ron O'Donnell in the first round, while a quick-leaving 7.40 in round two beat Rob Williams better 7.34. He picked up to 6.77 in the semifinals over Raymond Beadle. This set up a final-round meeting with Art Ward. Dale took the victory with a 6.81/201.79. He was also declared the winner at a four-car show at Tri-City. He won all three of his races and ran a best of 6.68/216 over Gary Bolger, Kenny Safford, and Dick Rosberg. At the Rockford Manufacturers Meet, Pulde showed that he could drive by beating Don Schumacher's quicker 6.66 in round two with a 6.75. But in the third round, he beat Shirley Muldowney, but then the motor let go, and the car went up in flames. Pulde got the car stopped, and he managed to get out. The Grand Am was badly burnt, but Dale was OK. It didn't take Mickey long to fix the car, as on August 5, the team was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. It was an easy field to qualify in as Dale's 7.46 qualified #13. He beat Gene Snow in the first round, setting up a round two meeting with Prudhomme. Pulde tried hard, but his 6.72 lost to the "Snake's" 6.51. At the AHRA National Challenge race, Dale ran 6.68/217.39 to qualify #14 in the 32 car field. In the first round, he picked up to 6.63 over Pat Foster in the "Barry Setzer" Vega. In the semifinals, he lost to Prudhomme. The following week (September 3), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.404/223.32 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show. Impressive considering that almost 50 cars attempted to qualify. Unfortunately, an off-pace 6.905/225.56 in the first round, lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.62. Pulde was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.43 qualified #4. A 6.45 in the opening round beat Gene Snow's off-pace 7.24, and he picked up to 6.37 in the second round to defeat Sush Matsubara's 6.45. Unfortunately, the Grand Am was shut off on the line for leaking oil in the semifinal. Pulde had to watch as Gerry Glenn made a solo to advance into the final. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale's East/West Funny Car Championships. Pulde smoked the tires hard in the first round, where his 10.54 lost to Prudhomme's 6.74. Ran 6.45 at Bristol. Where did the team run 231.95?

Notes: Mickey Thompson's Grand Am sure stood out from the other FC's in '73. It was big, mean, and sexy. The team started the season at Irwindale early in January for its Grand Premiere race. Butch set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.60. He had over two-tenths on the second qualifier(6.83). He then opened up eliminations by beating Ed McCulloch with a 6.70. Another 6.70/209.79 defeated Bob Pickett's 6.85/219 in the "L'il Demon."Maas had his closest race in the semifinal, where his 6.77/204.54 just outdid Mike Van Sant's hard-charging,6.80/214. His final-round opponent was Jeff Courtie, who had lost to Jim Dunn in the semifinal but got back into the show on the "break rule."It looked like the MT team would win easily as Jeff had not gotten into the sixes to this race. As they went to line up for the final, Butch did his burnout and the Hemi let-go. Somehow, Dunn got on to the starting line, and he then raced Courtie and won. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Maas ran 6.66/223 to qualify #10 in the 32 car field. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut off, giving opponent Gene Snow an easy ride into round two. Butch qualified this car no. 1 at '73 NHRA Winternationals with a 7.18/216.34 but lost in the first round when the car broke against Kenny Bernstein. He qualified #5 at the '73 AHRA Northern Nationals and won his first-round match-up with Kelly Brown, running 6.48/213.88, but could not make the second round because of breakage. Qualified #7 at the '73 NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.54/231.95 but suffered a severe fire at the end of that Friday qualifying run, preventing him from racing in eliminations. After that fire, Butch spent time in the hospital recovering from burns, and when Mickey Thompson rebuilt the car, Dale Pulde was driving.

Notes: Matsubara started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #4 with a 6.93. In the opening round of competition, his off pace 7.29/210.28 lost to Jeff Courtie's 7.08. Sush was the top qualifier at the second OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.62 (Low ET). He ran 6.76/213 to beat Tom McEwen's 6.79/215 and 6.71/213.77 over Jim Paoli's 6.73/200 to make the finals against Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer owned Vega. He lost the final to Foster's 7.03. He competed at the AHRA Winternationals at Phoenix, where his 6.50/215.82 qualified #2 in the 32 car field behind Foster's 6.40. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 11.47/57.80 loss to Richard Tharp's 6.55 in the "Blue Max." Sush once again qualified #1 at the third OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.66 (Low ET), and once again, he reached the finals, but this time lost to Tom McEwen's 7.72/104.77 with an off pace 8.08/159.01. Traction was horrible at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and the team failed to qualify there. After being on such a lousy racing surface, the team was happy to be going to Irwindale for an eight-car show. But as luck would have it, Irwindale had the rocket car of Bill Fredrick's running there as well. Bill had some problems and dumped rocket fuel all over the left lane, making it useless. In the opening round, Matsubara's 6.95/213.27 won when Leroy Chadderton slipped and slipped the "Hawaiian" across the centerline. Russell Long also slid all over the track in the "Pabst" Charger in the semifinals while Sush took an easy pass down the right lane to win. The track officials decided that they ran the final with both cars making one run each down the right lane, with the car that got the lowest ET being declared the winner. Bill Leavitt was his final-round opponent, and Bill ran 6.83/206. Sush then made his run and ran 6.64/224.43 for the victory. Things returned no normal at Fresno Dragway's Winter Race of Champions. The track was fair, and there were no issues. It was another eight-car field, and Sush qualified #5, meaning that he would have to run the low qualifier, Dave Beebe, in the first round. Dave had driven the "Mr. Ed" Satellite to an excellent 6.47 in qualifying, which was over two-tenths quicker than the rest of the field. So in round one, Sush tried hard, but his 6.85/211.26 finished far behind Beebe's 6.56/219. Shortly after that (March 24), the team was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. The final race featured sixteen-car fields. A 6.91 qualified Sush in the #11 spot. In round one, he picked up to 6.84/220.04 to defeat Mert Littlefield's6.87/205. In round two, Mike Halloran shut off against him, and a 7.49/193.96 advanced. In the semifinals, his opponent Dave Uyehara had problems in the "Pure Hell" car and shut down to 13.80 while Matsubara cranked out a 6.89/215 to win. He faced Tom McEwen in the final. Tom had not run better than 6.96 in eliminations. But the "Goose" ran a 6.69/222 in the final to beat Sush's consistent 6.86/221.67. Back at OCIR on April 14 for an eight-car show, Sush led the qualifiers with the only six-second time, a 6.96. The time held for Low ET, but that was it as Sush failed to reach the final there. He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships a week later. This was a 32 car field. He beat Stan Bowman in the opening round, and then a 7.02/212.76 beat a tire-smoking Dale Armstrong in round two. But in the third round, his 6.92/220.04 lost a close one to Mike Van Sant's 6.91/216 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. At the NHRA Division Seven race at Bakersfield, Sush set Low ET on Saturday while qualifying #1 with a 6.87. He had a flash fire on the run and had burned his neck and hands. He was treated and released and ran the car on Sunday. A 6.96/220.04 beat Mike Snively in the "Mr. Ed" car. But he smoked the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Danny Ongais. A week later (May 26), it was back to OCIR for the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 race. Sush's 6.68 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car show, but problems arose in the first round when after doing his burnout and backing up, the car got stuck in reverse. His opponent, Gerry Glenn, soloed into round two. Sush qualified at NHRA Indy at 6.486/231.95 and then went to the semis, where he lost a close one to eventual winner Ed McCulloch, 6.480/225.00 to 6.550/229.59. The team was a 6.629/223.32 DNQ at the Ontario World Finals.

Notes: Chuck didn't race at the first two NHRA events of '92, but he was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. He debuted his new sponsor, Nobody Beats the Wiz. His associate sponsors included Snap-On Tools, Mopar Performance, and Mothers. Other major sponsors included Superwinch and Kendall GT-1. At Houston, his 5.37/276.58 qualified #9 for the show. In the first round, an even better 5.26/272.47 lost to a quicker, leaving Cruz Pedregon at 5.29/252. Cruz would go on to win his first win in NHRA Funny Car competition. Etchells then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.28/274.55. A first-round 5.23/281.60 beat Tom Hoover, but he again fell to a Pedregon holeshot in round two. This time Cruz's 5.21/285 stopped his 5.17/281.77. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and Chuck's 5.35/272.89 qualified #4. He beat Paul Smith in the opening round with a 5.37/273.05, and a semifinal 5.40/261.02 beat Freddie Neely. He faced Mark Oswald in the final, and Etchells slowed to 5.50/235.23 in a runner-up finish to Oswald's 5.33/279. NHRA's next race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.27/270.75 qualified #5 and another 5.27 at 266.35 beat a tire-smoking Jim Epler in the first round. In the second round, Oswald broke a rear end, and Etchells' 5.30/273.30 advanced. In the semifinals, eventual winner John Force ran 5.22/265 to beat his 5.31/251.53. The NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis was next on the calendar, and Chuck's 5.35/274.64 qualified #7. He beat Hoover in round one, with a 5.37/275.48, but he lost to Al Hofmann in round two. At NHRA's seventh race of the season, the Springnationals at Columbus, Etchells grabbed his first pole of the year with a 5.23/279.85. He continued to look tough in the first round, where his 5.26/275.56 beat Gary Litton. In round two, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.28/271.16. But in the semifinals, he lost a close race with Hofmann. Etchells' quicker 5.26/278.89 lost to Al's 5.28/273. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 5.51/259.59 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 5.93/197.32 lost to Del Worsham's 5.64/266.

Notes: Ed also ran 5.188 that same day. The 5.132 was not bettered until March 1992. This photo from Columbus 1988. Confirmed 277.17 at Memphis 89. We need to confirm the Ennis 280.89. | Ed started the '89 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.36/276.58. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. At the next event, the NHRA Supernationals at Houston, he ran a 5.34/272.89 to qualify #7. Once again Ed got taken out by Oswald, but this time it was in round two where Mark's 5.38 nipped McCulloch's 5.40. He had some luck on his side at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.39/268.89 qualified #5, but that was the best he ran at Gainesville. He beat a tire smoking Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a second round 6.47 beat a tire smoking R.C. Sherman. In the semifinal, a 9.76/68 mph run advanced when Art Hendey broke on the line. In the final, Ed took the victory with a 19.70-70.94 beat Bruce Larson fouled. On April 23 he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.45/270.75 qualified #3, but he lost to Sherman in the first round. From there it was off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran a 5.41/274.97 to qualify #7. He beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a 5.55 took out Tony McCallum's 5.60 in round two. But in the semifinal, he shut off to a 10.00 loss to Kenny Bernstein. He made it into the semifinals of the next event as well, the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he qualified #6 with a 5.55/268.73. He got revenge on Oswald in round two, beating him with a 5.46/269 to Mark's 5.57. But in the semifinal, John Martin beat Ed. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and while he didn't make the final, he did set Low ET at 5.45. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.36/269.70, but he lost to Johnny West in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #4 with a 5.52/265.17, but a first-round 6.34/163 lost to Hendey's 5.63/260. McCulloch made the final at the NHRA Summernationals in July. A 5.30 qualified #2. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and a 5.56/268 beat Larson's quicker 5.50 in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.64/262 beat a tire smoking Don Gay Jr. In the final he ran Bernstein. A 5.50 by McCulloch came in second best to Kenny's 5.41. In the thin air of Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Ed ran 5.65/252.24 to qualify #4. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, and a 5.72/250 beat Tom Hoover in round two, but a semifinal 5.91 fell to Larson's 5.54. The eleventh race on the NHRA schedule was the California Nationals. A 5.38/275.31 qualified Ed #2. He made it into the semifinal before losing to Oswald's 5.49/267 with a quicker 5.47/270.92. The NHRA Seafair Nationals was the next race. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.35/274.39, but a first-round 5.98/222.82 lost to Jim Murphy. Ed hadn't won a race since March and the team was overdue. Things finally came together on August 20 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. McCulloch got his first pole of the year with a 5.42/267.53. He set a 5.37 track record at 270.27 in the first round, and a second round 5.45/270.02 beat Sherman's 5.51/263. In the semifinal, a 5.42/268.25 beat upstart Larry Camenzind, and for the win he faced off with Larson. It was Ed's driving that got the victory, as he pulled a holeshot and his 5.55/266.90 beat Bruce's quicker 5.51/264. After that, it was on to Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 5.35/275.90 qualified #6 and in round one, a 5.56/271.49 beat Jerry Caminito's 6.11/171. In round two, his 5.46/269.94 lost to Larson's 5.32/274. On September 17, Ed was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.28/274.39 and a 5.40/222 beat R.C. Sherman in the first round. But in round two, he was late off the line and his 5.30/271.57 finished behind Force's 5.34/275.

Notes: Al was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.45. His opponent, Kenny Bernstein, got out of shape in the first round, and Segrini advanced. Unfortunately, Al's engine was ailing, and he could not run eventual winner Gordie Bonin in round two. He won the New England Spring Funny Car Championships in May, running a best of 6.05/231. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.127 (Low ET) at 234.37. A first-round 6.16/230.76 beat Bonin's 6.58/187. He continued to run well in round two, with his 6.20/226.70 beating Don Prudhomme's 6.31/222. He had a small fire on the line in the semifinals and had to shut down, advancing eventual winner Gary Burgin. Englishtown was a stop that he would rather forget. He was there for the NHRA Summernationals. He had made a qualifying pass and stopped the car. He attempted to shut the engine down, but it wouldn't shut off. Oil got onto the headers, and the car caught fire. Al bailed out, and the car started idling down the track on fire. No worry, the concrete retaining wall was easily able to stop this flaming mess. It did. The car was then rebuilt and stolen the day after. Not sure if it was recovered, but Segrini was driving for Castronovo at the NHRA Grandnationals. Segrini qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.21/229.59. An opening round 6.19 beat Bernstein's 6.25, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a losing 6.86 while Dale Pulde's 6.72 in the "War Eagle" advanced into the final. He won the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Al set Low ET at 6.15 and a troubled 7.22/189.87 in the final beat an even more troubled Roy Harris at 9.50-78. Segrini went to Indy with high hopes for running well at the NHRA US Nationals. But he made a dozen passes attempting to qualify, with the best being a 6.14/234.98 (second alternate). The problem was traced to two bad fuel pumps. Shortly after this, he won the New England Funny Car Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.00/238.71 and a 6.11/235 beat Bruce Larson in the final. He scored another big win at the IHRA Nationals at the end of September. There, he stopped Burgin in the final. His next stop was at Atco for their Funny Car Spectacular. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, Segrini beat R.C. Sherman with a 6.45/217.39. But in the semifinals, he shut down to 9.77/84.58 in a loss to Harris' 6.71/212. AKA Utica Flash. Al ran 6.127/234.98 for best NHRA national event times.

Notes: Tom McEwen was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified on the "bump", but lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in the first round. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.30/231.95 qualified #7 and he beat alternate John Force in the opening round with a 6.31/232.55. In the second round, he lost a motor and the race to Hoover. He then went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 race where he got back at Hoover by beating him in the final for the victory. The rain delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals only had an eight-car field. Tom ran 6.46/227.27 to get the last spot in the show, but a first-round 6.43/224.43 lost to Force's 6.40/223. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where his 6.49 qualified #3 in another eight-car show. He beat John Collins before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinal. Next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.31/220.58 qualified #15 and a 6.53/214.28 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.41/233 in the first round. He followed that up with a runner-up finish at the North American Grand Nationals at Detroit. A strong 6.22/217 beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" in round two and a 6.50 beat Len Imbrogno in the semifinal. But a blown engine in the final slowed him to a 7.14/146 that lost to John Pott's 6.66 in the "Mr. Norm" car. On June 24, McEwen was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. He reset the AHRA Funny Car record to 6.08 at 240.00 in the first round, and a semifinal 6.12/236.22 beat low qualifier Johnny White. He faced Hoover in the final who had also been running well and had reset the AHRA speed record to 242. The two both had problems - Hoover shut off and McEwen won with an 8.00. Hoover and McEwen raced against each other quite a bit in '79 and early in July, the two met for a best of three match race at Houston. McEwen won two straight. The first-round saw his 6.36/209.30 beat Hoover's 6.49/178 and a motor blowing 6.41/209.30 won again. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Tom qualified #10 with a 6.23/223.32 and he set Low ET of the first-round with a 6.15 that beat Roy Harris. But he hurt his crank on the run and was unable to show for his second round race against Tripp Shumake. Early in August, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and in the semifinal, set Low ET with a 6.21 to beat Collins. He met Tom Hovland in the final and he overpowered the track, smoking the tires to a 6.72 in a runner-up finish to Hovland's 6.36. Another win came his way at the AHRA World Finals on August 19. There he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals before setting a track record 6.15 at 223.88 in the final to beat a troubled Gordie Bonin at 13.08. He almost got into the "fives" at Indy for the NHRA U. S. Nationals. His 6.01/238.72 qualified #4. McEwen had scored an emotional victory here the year before and was hoping to repeat. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.21/234 lost to eventual winner Bonin’s 6.16/240. He then made the trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. His 6.18/238.72 qualified #8, but in the opening round both he and opponent Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's car ran 6.24 (McEwen at 238.72 again), but Ridings got the win light. The NHRA season came to an end at Ontario Motor Speedway for the World Finals. McEwen qualified #3 with a 6.24/230.76 and a 6.53/229.59 beat former "Hot Wheels" teammate Don Prudhomme's 6.85/229 in the opening round. But in round two, his 6.57/225.56 fell to Ron Colson's 6.35/236 in the "Hawaiian.” McEwen finished tenth in the NHRA season long points standings. | Where was the 243 run?
