Notes: Hughes attempted to qualify for the AHRA Winternationals but failed to make the show. At the NHRA Winternationals, Hughes qualified #8 with a 7.66 (low qualifier was 7.53). He beat Steve Bovan in the first round, and a holeshot 7.71 in round two beat Larry Arnold's quicker 7.58. He faced Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" in the semifinals, and he fouled, advancing Reyes into the final. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Candies and Hughes debuted their new 'Cuda. They made a deal and had Reyes drive their '69 car at the race. In qualifying, the old car out-qualified the new one. Leonard ran 7.28/202 for the #4 spot, while the old car qualified one spot higher in #3 with a 7.21/208 (Top Speed). Both made their way to the final, with the old car's times being much better than the new one's. Times for Hughes were 7.32 over Huston Platt in Tommy Smith's Dart and 7.34 in the semifinals over Bobby Rowe's 7.39 in the "Super Duster." By comparison, Reyes ran 7.15 and 7.107. In the final, the two staged, and after the light turned green, Reyes waited a very long time before leaving the line. Leonard took the victory with a 7.29/202.24, but Reyes still almost caught him and had to lift, running 7.12/191.08. In the semifinals, Reyes had run 206. LaPlace held a Funny Car vs. Top Fuel race on March 15. Hughes won all three of his races, running 7.55/187.11, 7.35/202.24, and 7.36/205.01. On April 12, the Candies and Hughes team was at Amarillo for a match race against Kelly Chadwick. Hughes won both the first two races to sew up the match, but they ran a final race, and Chadwick won with an 8.07 to Hughes' 8.08. The team was tough to beat at the Super Stock Nationals. It was a two-day affair, and on the first day, Leonard qualified #1 with a 7.24/200.44. He beat Phil Castronovo with a 7.22/202.70, while in round two, a 7.19 (Low ET) at 200.44 beat Rowe. Tom Sneden broke on the line in the Bob Banning Dodge in the semifinals, and Hughes 7.22 went into the final. Once again, he met his good friend Reyes. This time out, the outcome was reversed from the Gatornationals final. The "Hawaiian" took the win with a 7.35/201.34 over Leonard's 7.42/200.89. The following day (May 10), these two again worked their way to the final. This time Leonard got the victory with a 7.35. Later in May, LaPlace held a six-car show with all cars running three rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Leonard beat Kenny Bernstein in his first race with a 7.64/189.87. In his second race, Mart Higginbotham's 7.53/185 beat his 7.59/193.13. Hughes got all crossed up against Don Gay and lost his third race with a 7.95/147.70. His best ET did not advance to the final. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Hughes qualified #4 with a 7.26. A first-round 7.30 beat John Dekker, and a 7.29/200 beat Bernstein's ailing Cougar in round two. He fell off to a 7.63/145 in the semifinals, losing to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 7.07/207 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. In July, Hughes competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. All cars made three runs. Leonard lost to Tommy Grove's "Cammer" powered Mustang in the first round. In his second race, a 7.47 beat Randy Walls, while in his third race, a 7.34 beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick. Leonard raced at the 900-foot track at Southeastern Dragway for the Dallas Funny Car Championships near the end of July. It was a sixteen-car show with many "name" drivers in attendance. Hughes' 7.13 in the first round beat Susman, but he lost to Shirl Greer in the second round.

Notes: This car was a late season replacement for the '70 Duster which burned in a trailer fire while on the road. Runner-up to Gene Snow at '70 NHRA World Finals in Dallas, car ran 6.86/214.79 at that race. | After the Duster burnt in the trailer on the way home from the Seattle WCS race on August 22, Whipple and McCulloch had to ready a new ride. On September 12, Ed was driving his new 'Cuda at Capitol for the Funny Car Grand Prix.

Notes: Arnie started driving John's Cuda in competition on June 13 at Lions for its All-American series race. Arnie qualified #1 with a 7.39 but came up against the always tough Gene Conway in the first round. Sure enough, Conway set Low ET at 7.26/202.70 while beating Behling's close 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed). Arnie got back into the show for the semifinals when Steve Bovan broke. He made good use of his second chance by running a 7.60/196.07 to beat Bob Smith's 7.95/163 in "Bad Bascomb's Ghost." That put him in the final, where once again, he faced Conway's Corvette. Arnie must have been a little nervous as he fouled away a 7.79/193.54, giving Gene the victory. At the OCIR March of Dimes race on June 20, he set Low ET at 7.25/199.50 in his first-round victory over Conway's 7.74/195. In the semifinal, a 7.67/199.55 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.72/194. But against Mike Snively in the final, he got a little anxious and fouled, running a 7.41/202.70. Snively ran a 7.26/203.61 for the win. On July 3 for the Nitro Championships at OCIR, he again set Low ET at 7.25, but this time, it came in the final while beating Ray Alley for the win. He ran an easy 7.64/190.67 in the first round, when Jack Chrisman's Mustang broke. A 7.46/180.36 beat Dave Beebe's 7.48/195 in round two, and in the semifinal, he set Top Speed with a 7.43/200.44 pass over Snively's 7.67/194. His final round numbers were 7.25/200.00 over Alley's 7.95/191. He went out and did it again the next day at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. He beat a troubled John Lombardo with a 7.81/190.26 in the first round. In the semifinal, he was to have met Ray Alley, but Alley broke, so Arnie soloed with a 7.59/186.32. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.53/191.88, beating Conway's off pace 8.36/111. On July 11, he ran at the AHRA All-American meet at Lions. Again he came away with Low ET and Top Speed when he won his first-round race over Vic Morse with a 7.31/198.67. He beat Ray Alley in the semifinal with a rear-end breaking 8.02/133.13 but could not fix the car in time for the final, so Alley returned to run with the break rule in effect. He qualified #1 on August 1 at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships and beat Barry Kelly's Corvair in the first round, with a 7.38 (Low ET) at 186.32, but in round two, he won the race when Frank Rupert crossed the centerline, but Behling's car caught fire and was unable to return for the semifinals. He was ok. On August 15, they were back at it at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Once again, Arnie had Low ET and Top Speed at 7.14/210.78 (track speed record). He beat John Lombardo's 7.57/192 in the first round, with a 7.19/208.81. But the car came up ailing in round two and could only muster a 7.99/171.42, losing to Ed Lenarth's 7.64/181. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 6.895/214.79 qualified #3, but he lost a blower belt on the line in the first round, and Ken Safford advanced. That was the only NHRA national event that the team ran together. On September 13, Behling was at Lions for an eight-car All-American race. He qualified #1 with a 7.39, and in the first round, his 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed) lost to Conway's 7.26/202. He got back into the show on the break rule and beat Bob Smith driving the "Bad Bascomb's Ghost" car in the semifinals with a 7.60/196.07. In the final, he reran Conway, and once again, the results were the same. Gene got the victory while Arnie's 7.79/193.54 finished runner-up. By the end of September, Rich Siroonian was back behind the wheel.

Notes: Mike started the year by running 5.89/245.90 to qualify #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He beat Billy Meyer's 5.85/242 in the first round, with a 5.91/241.28 before losing to John Force's 5.75/252 in round two with a 5.90/250.00. In May, he was at Bakersfield, where his 5.82/257.87 (Top Speed and new track record) qualified #2 behind Force's 5.76/243. Dale Pulde broke a transmission against him in the first round, and Mike advanced with a 5.81. He got out of shape in the semifinal, and his 7.87/117 lost to John Martin's tire-smoking 6.78/199. Dunn ran NHRA Bandimere CO 7/86. Best 1986 NHRA national event times of 5.656/265.72 at the World Finals. Ran in the first nitro match race at Ennis (against Billy Meyer himself). Both cars ran 262 to show the track's potential. Also ran 257.28 at Indy 1986. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9.

Ed won his first race with a 6.60/218.44 (Top Speed) over Dale Pulde's 6.87/155 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In round two, his 6.62 beat Jake Johnston, who got out of shape and shut off in the "Pisano-Matsubara" car. But in his final run, he ran his best ET, and it wasn't good enough. His 6.52 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.51, and McEwen's win gave him the title as he won all three of his races. Ed then went to OCIR for its season opener, where once again he set Top Speed, this time at 217.91, but lost to Johnston in round two. He did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, nor was he at Beeline for the NHRA Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.24/225.56 and an opening-round 6.37/210.28 beat John Lombardo. A second-round 6.32/220.58 beat a tire-shaking Tripp Shumake, and in the semifinals, he broke a throttle linkage and slowed to 9.75 but lucked out as opponent Gene Snow fouled. He then faced Don Prudhomme in the final, and despite running a good 6.36/223.88, he still finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.26/227. He then went to OCIR for its East vs. West Meet, and while he didn't win, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/232.55. Early in March, Irwindale held its Night Opener. Eight cars made two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ed was nowhere near running quick enough to reach the final. In his first race, both he and Lombardo smoked the tires with the "Ace's" 7.40 coming out on top. He again smoked the hides in his second race, finally backing out of it to 13.15, while eventual winner McEwen won with a 6.67. McCulloch ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Jim Dunn. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He competed at the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race on March 20.27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.50 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.61/200.44 beat Mike Halloran who broke. In the second round, his 6.43/211.76 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.32/182. A week later, McCulloch was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven Opener. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.50/227.84. In the first round, he got a solo as Steve Leach had crashed in qualifying. Ed advanced with a 6.63/196.93. But in round two, he had problems against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and his shut off 12.41 lost to Jim's strong 6.19. On the Fourth of July weekend Ed was entered in the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Ed beat a broken Larry Gould while breaking himself on the run. Ed’s best NHRA national event times were 6.161/237.46 at Indy. Did Ed run 6.15 somewhere this year? | Indy runs were in the new Foster/Hume car debuted that August. In the pictured '75-'76 car, he also won the SIR Funny Car opener in early April with a 6.46 over Mike Miller's Boredom Zero Mustang II. - Joe Moore

Notes: Russell was runner-up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham on April 4. He beat Ray Sherman in the semifinals with a 6.84/208.33, but his final round 6.90/197.80 lost to the "Max's" 6.38/226. At the next IHRA event, the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on May 2, he repeated that finish. Even the victor was the same as Beadle's 6.36/216 beat Russell's 6.82/164.80. Earlier, Long ran 7.14 and 6.81 to reach the final. Sacramento held an Funny Car race and Long picked up the victory there. His final round 6.31/221 beat Dave Condit's 6.37/221 in the "L. A. Hooker." The team also competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, but Russell lost early there. At the end of July, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. All the cars made two runs and Russell ran 6.58 and 6.71. | We need to confirm that Russell ran 6.18/237 this year (or is that a mistaken duplication of Ron Colson’s similar numbers?)

Notes: Al started the '98 season by setting a track record 4.86 at Pomona in qualifying #1 for the NHRA Winternationals. His speed on the run was 304.15. In the opening round of eliminations, he got out of shape and ran 6.68163.30. He got lucky, as his opponent, Mark Sievers, had shut down with problems. But Hofmann continued to have problems in round two, where his shut off 15.57/72.70 lost to Gary Densham's 4.99/305. He also qualified #1 at the next NHRA event, the Arizona Nationals held in Phoenix. His 4.99/304.67 got him the pole. A first-round 5.02/302.21 defeated Del Worsham's early shut-off 5.79/173. But in round two, Al smoked the tires and shut down to an 8.51/97.82 that lost to Ron Capps' 5.07/302.

Notes: Won IHRA Springnationals Bristol 1990. | K.C. Spurlock was at the Texas Motorplex in January making his licensing runs. He ran 5.56/223 while getting the license. He then went to Pomona and showed 'em how it's done. He qualified last with a 5.57/255.60. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Force. John probably thought he had K.C. covered easily, but Spurlock ran 5.32/272.14 to trailer Force's 5.42/278. In round two, a 5.37/263.00 beat Ray Sherman's 5.61/270, and in the semifinals, his 5.39/276.49 beat Bruce Larson's 5.54/267. Everyone was now looking at this guy when he faced veteran Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had run as quick as 5.27 in the first round, but his semifinal win came with only a 5.89. Spurlock's 5.78/186.64 won in the final over McCulloch, who smoked the tires and shut off. It was quite the Funny Car debut for K.C. Of course, everyone wondered if it was just a flash in the pan when the teams showed up at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. But Spurlock continued to impress, running 5.30/276.15 for the "pole." He beat Gary Densham in the opening round before losing to Mark Oswald's 5.37/275 in round two with a quicker 5.36/276.32. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals early in March. Spurlock's 5.45/269.78 qualified #7 and an improved 5.40/277.00 in the opening round beat Jim Murphy. But an even stronger 5.34/275.48 in round two lost to Larson's 5.31/265. He made it into another final at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals at Gainesville. He qualified #3 with a 5.36/270.64, and in round one, his 5.39/266.11 advanced when Rune Fjeld shut off with tire shake. Another 5.39 at 268 beat Jim Dunn in round two, and in the semifinals, Force overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Spurlock moved on with a 5.51/259. Once again, he was up against McCulloch in an NHRA final, but this time the "Ace" came through for the win. His 5.33/267 beat Spurlock's 5.40/273 runner-up effort. Things didn't go well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.37/275.90, but he blew it after Al Hofmann fouled against him in the first round. K.C. stayed in it, got out of shape, and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. K.C.'s best times this year were a 5.199 low qualifying and Low ET effort at Englishtown and 282.13 at Memphis.

Notes: Everyone expected this car to win the NHRA Funny Car Championship in '89. After winning the championship the previous four years, it was a little disappointing how the season went for Kenny. It started at Pomona for the Winternationals. Kenny qualified way down the ladder in the #13 spot with a 5.47/266.74. He improved to a 5.42/264.16 in the first round to beat Dale Pulde. In round two, a consistent 5.43/269.21 beat Tom Hoover. In the semifinal, he beat Chris Lane with a 5.48/265.33. In the final, he met who was soon to be his nemesis, Bruce Larson. And sure enough, Larson scored the win over Bernstein. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Supernationals. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.30/270.27 but broke a rear end in the second round and lost to Art Hendey. The Gatornationals was the next stop; a 5.39/269.70 qualified #6. He lost to Larson in the second round. At the fourth race of the year, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.47/266.27, but once again, he lost in the second round, this time to Eric Reed. He looked like the Bernstein of old at the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #1 with a 5.25 (Low ET) at 280.11. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round and then got a couple of lucky breaks when, in round two, both he and Hoover smoked the tires, but Kenny's 6.45/232 held on for the win. In the semifinals, he ran a 5.42/270 to win over Ed McCulloch, who shut off to a 10.00. In the final, he ran Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Probe, and once again, he had a little luck when Oswald broke, and Bernstein scored his first victory of the season. The next race was the Cajun Nationals. Kenny used a 5.50/266.50 to qualify #4. In the first round against John Martin, the car broke on the burnout, giving Martin an easy single. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals at National Trail. Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.33/269.13. He beat Kalitta in the first round with another 5.33 but smoked the tires and lost to Jim White in round two. A strong performance was turned in at the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.44/265.72. In the first round, both he and Johnny West had problems, and both ran 5.60, West at 253 and Bernstein at 212.31, but the Buick still won the race. A 5.47/270.92 (Top Speed) beat Hoover's 5.68 in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.73/231 with a 5.48/254.47. Once again, he met with Oswald in the final, and the results were the same, with Kenny's 5.51/265.72 beating Oswald's close 5.54/258. He didn't have to wait long for his third victory of the year as it came at the next event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #3 with a 5.35, beat Hendey in the first round, and John Force in the second with a 5.36/272. He ran a solo 5.40/270 in the semifinals when Prudhomme broke just off the line. In the final, he was paired with McCulloch, and Kenny ran a 5.41 to win over Ed's 5.50. He was a favorite to win when the teams headed to Denver for the Mile High Nationals. He didn't disappoint in qualifying when his 5.53/263.38 (Top Speed) got the pole. He beat Hendey in the first round, and a 5.62/254 beat Mike Dunn's close 5.65 in round two. But in the semifinals, Oswald put him away with a track record 5.50. The California Nationals was next, and again Kenny qualified well with a 5.39/273.88, taking the #3 spot. Unfortunately, he and Tony McCallum ran 5.52 in the first round, with Tony winning. The next race was the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.34/278.89 (Top Speed). He beat Hendey's 5.57/260 in the first round with a 5.35/276.66. In round two, a 5.41/248.23 beat R.C. Sherman, and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Prudhomme with a 5.34/276.07, beating the "Snake's" 5.40/263. In the final, he met Larson, and despite running quicker and faster with 5.37/273.22 times, he lost to Larson's holeshot 5.40/271. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.43/266.11 qualified #2. When McCallum broke, he ran an easy 11.70/72.42 in the first round. But in round two against Larson, Kenny ran even worse when he smoked the tires to a 14.35/70.56 to lose to Bruce's 5.51/271. Kenny and Dale probably thought things couldn't get worse when they went to Indy for the US Nationals. A 5.37/276.75 qualified #8 there, but he lost to Hoover in round one. They went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals and set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.35/264.71. Kenny got past a fouling Gary Bolger in the first round, and in the semifinals, he ran a 5.64/216.35 that beat Doc Halladay's quicker 5.61. In the final, he met the second qualifier, R.C. Sherman, who beat him with a 5.50 to the "Budweiser King's" 5.54. On September 10, he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. A 5.51/264.41 qualified #2. He smoked the tires to a 6.67 in the first round but still beat Halladay. A 5.54/272 beat Johnny West's 5.98/244 in the semifinals. Kenny got his first IHRA victory of the year when he stopped a tire-smoking Darrell Amberson in the final with a 5.56/273.53. A week later (September 17), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 280 in qualifying with a 5.25/280.37 (#3). Another 5.25 at 279.06 beat a fouling Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in round two, he smoked the tires in a 6.80/141.17 loss to Larson's 5.30/276. He also lost in the second round at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. There, his 5.44 lost to Oswald's 5.34. The following week (October 8), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.21/277.60. Another 5.21 at 278.46 beat Hendey in the first round. A 5.24/277.43 advanced in round two when Tony McCallum broke, but in the semifinals against Prudhomme, he smoked the tires to a losing 9.29/79.33. The NHRA tour then went to Arizona for the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.48 at a track record 271.98. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, while a 5.49/267 in round two advanced when Jim White lost a blower on the line. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.56/268.17, losing to eventual winner Larson's 5.43/268. At the season-ending World Finals at Pomona, Bernstein did not end his Funny Car career as he would have liked. He qualified #4 with a 5.32/278.46, but in the first round, against Jerry Caminito, he lost with a 7.30/184.84. In the season-long NHRA points chase, he finished third behind Larson and Prudhomme. In the IHRA standings, he finished #7, even though he only ran two events. Some drivers would have loved to have seasons like that, but it was below his expectations for Kenny. Set 5.257 national record at Memphis 89. Ran 276.75 at 89 Big Bud Shootout. Photo from Indy 1989.

Notes: Photo from Pomona, CA 1979. | Tom had a great year in '79, especially the early part of the season. He started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals over Gary Burgin, and then he went to Pomona for NHRA's Winternationals where he qualified #8 with a 6.26/229. He ran 6.24 and 6.18 in the first two rounds on the way to meeting Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. There he ran another 6.24 to beat Tripp. In the final he met low qualifier, Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked his tires and Hoover ran a consistent 6.29/232.55 for the victory. It was his second career NHRA national event win. The following week (February 11), he was at Fremont for the East-West Meet. Hoover's first-round 6.86/139.10 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.37/208, but in the second round, he reset Fremont's ET record with a 6.06 at 230.76 to beat Ed McCulloch. He also backed it up with a 6.09. It was a strong showing for the "Showtime.” He made the finals at the next NHRA event as well, the Gatornationals in March. Tom qualified #3 with a 6.22. He beat Tom McEwen in round two with a 6.56/230 and a 6.50/226 beat a tire smoking Prudhomme in the semifinals. In the final he ran Gordie Bonin and despite Tom's quicker and faster 6.84/227.27 he lost to Bonin's 6.93/224. Also, in March he was runner-up to McEwen at the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field and Tom ran 6.38/231.36 to qualify sixth. It was a hard show to make as Billy Meyer, Gene Snow, Shumake, and John Collins among others failed to qualify. A first-round 6.44/223.32 lost to Beadle's 6.37/229. Hoover then ran at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals where he qualified #1 with a track record 6.22 at 232.56. He was upset by Billy Graham in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus, but he qualified well, running 6.15/235.60 for the #3 spot in the field. An opening round 6.33/231.95 advanced when Bob Pickett's Starfire broke, but in round two his 6.40/237.16 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.35/235. Tom was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals later in June. The Corvette was running strong going 6.19/242.60 (Top Speed) in his first-round win and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.21. In the final, he ran McEwen, but Hoover had problems and shut off. Hoover's 242.60 was a new AHRA speed record. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Early in July, he was at Houston for a best of three match race against McEwen. It wasn't Hoover day as he lost two straight running a best of 6.49. He was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Tom qualified #7 with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.23 beat Al Hanna, but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to John Force. Also, in July he finished runner-up to Pete Williams in the "Chi Town Hustler" at the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove. At the US 131 Funny Car Nationals Tom lost in the first round, to Frank Oglesby. At the PHR Championships at US 131 he failed to qualify. He skipped over the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada choosing to race at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City instead. Tom qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and lasted until the semifinals where he got crossed up and lost to Tom Hovland. He was upset in the first round, by Doc Halladay at the fourth NHRA Division 5 race at Brainerd. At the AHRA World Finals, he again qualified #1, this time with a 6.30/225. He beat Bill Spevacek in round one, before losing to Bonin in the semifinals. Indy was the next stop for the NHRA |US Nationals. Hoover qualified with a 6.07 and in the first round, his 6.12/241.93 beat Meyer's 6.32. A second round 6.24/234.37 lost to eventual winner Bonin's 6.04/244. Hoover's next stop was Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.17/240.65. A consistent 6.18/240.00 beat Jim Moore in the first round, but his 6.26/239.36 in round two was no match for Beadle's 6.08/234.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Ran 5.94/240 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. | Prudhomme had an interesting season. He was one of only six drivers to run in the 5.60s. In six IHRA starts, he made the final round in four of them, but in NHRA competition, he was winless for the second straight year. In fact, he failed to make an NHRA final. The last time that happened was in '72. Don started the season in the best way, by winning. He won the AHRA Winternationals in January. He qualified #1 with a 6.23 on the tricky surface. He advanced past the first-round when opponent Bill McCahill crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 6.46/218 beat Bryan Raines in the "Impulse" Mustang. A final round 6.66/208 took the victory over Henry Harrison who had earlier set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.15/232. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 5.95/217.91 beat Ed McCulloch's quicker 5.90/243, but he shut off with problems in the second round, letting John Force single. At the Gatornationals, 24 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Don ran 5.94/240.64 to qualify #13. Once again, he had problems and shut off, this time in the first round, advancing John Collins. Things went much better the following week (March 25) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. The track record going into this race was a 6.02 by Raymond Beadle. Prudhomme broke both ends of the track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.79/254.23. He got past the first-round easily and then beat Force's 6.00/241 in the second round with a 5.93/241. In the semifinals, both Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and Don ran 5.96, but the "Snake" got the win. In the final, he met up with his old friend, Tom McEwen. Don had problems and limped across with a 15.58/58.17 while McEwen ran 5.91/248 for the victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Don qualified #10 with a 5.92, but he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Also in May, he ran at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. An eight-car Funny Car show was run and 10 cars attempted to qualify. Don ran 5.81 to qualify #2. A first-round 5.72 at a career-best speed of 257.14 beat Gary Thompson, but he hurt his motor and was out of the competition. We needless to say, that pass was good for Low ET and Top Speed. Don failed to qualify for the eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #1 at Bristol on June 3 for the IHRA Springnationals. A 5.74 (Low ET) got the spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Meyer in the first round. On June 10, he qualified #5 with a 5.85/252.80 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first-round 5.87/246.57 beat Paul Smith, while a second round 5.99/212.36 advanced when Force broke. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.24/69 that lost to McEwen's 5.87/251. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, he qualified #5 with a 6.01, but lost to Jim Head's 6.06 in round two with a 6.13.

He failed to reach the finals, but it was still a good outing for the newcomer to the Funny Car ranks. Jody made his NHRA Funny Car debut at Indy for the US Nationals. He did pretty well, qualifying #6 with a 5.78/256.41. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to eventual winner Jim Head. A week later he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals where he qualified #2, but lost early.

Notes: Al qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.13/289.20. A first-round 5.25/282.48 beat Richard Hartman while in round two, a 5.16/281.86 beat a tire-smoking Tom Hoover. In the semifinals, his 5.30/283.72 lost to Del Worsham's 5.22/290. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.26/282.48 qualified #7. He beat Chuck Etchells' 5.22/272 in the first round, with a 5.15/287.72. In the second round be beat John Force's 5.22 with a 5.16/276.07. Unfortunately, the run came at a price as the engine blew and the resulting fire destroyed the car. He was unable to run in the semifinals giving his scheduled opponent, Jim Epler a freebie into the final. He recovered nicely at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. There he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.09 at 289.57 to qualify #2. In round one a 5.13/281.86 beat Jack Wyatt. In the second round, his 5.18/285.62 beat Hoover. In the semifinals, he beat Brent Fanning with a 5.18/269.05. This moved him into the final against Force. Al wanted this one badly, maybe too badly, as he fouled and shut down to 10.16/81.16 while John got the victory with a 5.05/289. He picked up a bit more at the NHRA Gatornationals when he set a Gainesville track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.08 at 284.36. Hofmann and Force worker their way to the final for the second NHRA event in a row. Al beat Epler with a 5.40/268.33 in the first round, while a 5.21/283.46 advanced in round two when Chuck Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gary Bolger smoked the tires and Al's 5.17/284.27 moved into the final. Luck was not on Al's side as he when into a wheelstand and shut down to 11.08/74.61 while Force got another one with a 5.21/257. He hit a home run at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. While the event didn't offer points, it was sure a dominating performance. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.26/278.63. He ran like a bracket racer hitting 5.26/276.83 and 5.26/282.39 to beat Bolger and Cruz Pedregon and advance into the final. In the final, he met Gordie Bonin driving the "Hawaiian." Al got the victory with a Low ET and Top Speed blast of 5.18/288.55.

Notes: Beadle debuted his new Omni-bodied car on August 3 at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He had problems getting the car to hook up and he finally ran 6.56 to get the final qualifying spot in the eight-car show. He improved, only slightly, to a 6.50 in the first round, but it was enough to beat John Pott who smoked the tires to a 7.93. In the semifinals, he fell of to a 6.79 that lost to eventual winner Paul Smith's 6.42 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." It was not a great start with the new ride. On August 17, the "Blue Max" team was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. Raymond advanced past the first-round with a 6.26/228.42 when Joe Godwin's Lincoln broke. In the semifinals, he improved to a 6.20/235.60, but lost to Billy Meyer's 6.14/204. The car performed better at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals where he qualified #1 with a 5.963/240.00. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Roy Harris' 6.28/236. A week later they were at Jackson County Sports Park for another NHRA Divisional race. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.31/226.13 behind Ed McCulloch's 6.14/226. These two worked their way into the final. Beadle started by running 6.22/230.76 over Nick Harmon and in the semifinals, set Low ET with a 6.09 while beating Dale Armstrong. In the final, he got Top Speed to go along with his Low ET when he ran 6.15/236.22 for the victory over Ed's 6.24/229. Fremont held a four-car show on a Wednesday night in September. They all made two runs with the two Low ET cars running in the final. Beadle gained his spot in the final with runs of 6.03 and 5.99 (Low ET). He was to meet Tom Ridings in the final who had run 6.05 and 6.09. Beadle also set Top Speed at 243.90, but the last race was never run due to a curfew at the track. The "Max" was strong at Seattle on September 21 for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.13/241.93 qualified #4 and in the first round, he beat Hank Johnson with a 6.19. In the second round, his 6.28/231.95 advanced when Tom McEwen broke just off the line. He picked up to a 6.01/243.90 (Top Speed) in the semifinals over Meyer which won him his second NHRA Funny Car Championship. In the final, he beat Dale Armstrong with a 6.04/243.24. Notes: A dismal year, performance and sponsor-wise. Gary started the year by qualifying #1 at the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Don Prudhomme. Gary failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and a best of 6.30 also was unable to qualify at the Gatornationals. He did make the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 but went up in smoke in the first round, and lost to Raymond Beadle. Gary was at Maple Grove in April for its Spring All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show, and Burgin won his first-round race over Bruce Larson with a 6.20/232.55 but fouled in the semifinals against Bob Seifert. He was back at Maple Grove in May for the Jungle Jim Memorial race. Six cars made two runs each, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gary's first race saw Dale Pulde beat him with a 6.27/229 to his 6.43/229.00. His 6.35/228.42 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" Mustang in his second race. Unfortunately, neither of his times was good enough to make the final round race. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gary had all kinds of problems and failed to qualify. He had a blower explode, and after fixing it, every other attempt to qualify had the car go up in tire smoke. It was upsetting considering that he had won this event the year before. He did much better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.015/242.58 qualified #2 behind Beadle's 5.94. Gary beat Rick Johnson in the first round, with a 6.12, but in round two, he lost to Al Segrini. He then went to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44, but another 6.44 in round one, lost to Prudhomme's 6.23. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field at the PHR Championships with a 6.15/235.60. An opening round 6.42/222 beat an out-of-shape Stan Bowman, and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.31/238.09 (Top Speed) when Billy Meyer's reverser broke after his burnout. In the final, he ran Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," and his 6.44/236.84 finished second best to Colson's 6.20/231. The following week (August 17), he stopped off at Epping, New England, for the NHRA Division 1 Final, where he qualified #1 with a 6.01/241.28 (Top Speed). He set Low ET in the first round, where his 6.01/240 beat Pulde's 6.13/223. He shut off to 8.70 in the semifinal, but that was good enough to win as Al Hanna crossed the centerline and was disqualified. This put Gary into the final against Johnson. Once again, Gary's opponent crossed the centerline, and Burgin got the victory with an 11.33/71.59. Another win came at Englishtown over an eight-car field where Gary set Low ET at 6.09. He also ran 6.26/240.64 to beat John Speelman. In the final, he met Paul Smith driving Larry Coogle's "Sting." Gary won with a 6.12 at a new track speed record of 243.90 over Paul's 6.38/194. More disappointment came at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his best of 6.11/241.28 failed to qualify for the show. Yet, just two weeks later, he won the IHRA US Open Championships at Rockingham. There he qualified #3 with a 6.19, and in the first round, he beat Frank Oglesby with a 6.37. He set Low ET of the meet in the semifinals with a 6.07/238.72 over Pulde's 6.24. This put him against Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" car in the final. It was a close race between the two, but Gary's 6.26/237.46 prevailed over Rosberg's 6.28/239. | I've heard that Gary built this car himself at J. Ed Horton's shop? - Tim Simplot | Yes, Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore

Notes: Tom started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals for the second year in a row. He qualified #6 and, in the final, beat Don Prudhomme for the victory. Tom was hoping for a repeat at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but it didn't happen. He qualified #15 with a 6.200/230.76 and a 6.27/230.76 in the first round, beating Billy Meyer's 6.32. In the second round, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.32/234 to 6.92/150.25. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 at 6.201/225.56, and in round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.18/232 with a quick-leaving 6.247/229.59. In round two, he improved to a 6.126/233.76 but lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.06/227 in the "Blue Max." At the end of March, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division 4 race, but he lost to John White's 7.29/226 in the first round, with a quicker 7.09/219.51. Hoover set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Houston's third NHRA Division 4 race. There were only three FCs at the race, and Tom soloed due to his top qualifying spot and ran 6.37/225.56 to advance to the final against John White. In the final, Hoover's Corvette developed problems, and he shut down, giving White the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 6.10/236.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In round one, he ran 6.27/220.04 but lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.25/234. Hoover ran really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.20/231.95 qualified #8, and in the first round, he beat Roy Harris, 6.22/230.76 to 6.60/186. Another 6.22/227.84 in round two topped Rick Johnson's 6.25/236, while in the semifinals, his 6.30/224.43 advanced when Ed McCulloch had a header come loose and shut down. He faced Beadle in the final, and Tom smoked the tires to a runner-up finish to the "Max's" 6.09/235. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 6.51/209.80. He then went on to win by beating Dale Tuter and Henry Harrison before stopping Larry Fullerton in the final with a 6.63/212.27. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, choosing to go to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.11 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme's 5.92. But in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.89 that lost to John Collins' 6.29. He also didn't go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Things went his way at Union Grove on July 27 for the NHRA Division Three race. A 6.21 qualified #2, and he went on to win, running 6.24 in the final to beat Frank Hawley. Tom's next NHRA national event was Indy, where he qualified #3 at 6.021/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke on the burnout against McCulloch in round one. He qualified well at Seattle, hitting 6.045/230.76 for the second slot. But again, first-round troubles set in, and he shut off against Gordie Bonin in the first round. Tom's qualifying prowess continued at Ontario, as his 6.123/234.98 grabbed the #2 spot. He beat John Collins in round one, 6.173/221.13 to 6.83/188, but Raymond Beadle got him in round two, 6.13/237 to 6.32/222.27.

Notes: Tom was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 6.130/236.84. He lost to low qualifier, Kosty Ivanof in the first round, 6.130/236.22 to 6.330/235.60. He went to Bakersfield for the March Meet where he lasted until the semifinals before getting out of shape and losing to eventual winner Jim Dunn. The following week (March 16), Ridings was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #14 at 6.213/234.98 and in the first round, he got around Billy Meyer who crossed the centerline. In round two, Ron Colson got out of shape in the "Hawaiian" and shut off against him. Tom advanced with a 6.357/185.18. In the semifinals, Ridings' off-pace 6.466/180.36 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.115/207.85 in the "Blue Max.” In April, Ridings was at Fremont for the NHRA Divisional race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.14/223.32, but in the first round, his sleepy 6.44/147.05 lost to Sherm Gunn's 6.72/215. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as the Fremont race was rain postponed to the same weekend. At the OCIR Divisional race on May 17, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.35/235.60. A 6.46/230.76 in the first round, narrowly lost to Jim Moore's 6.44/224. The team had a great outing at NHRA Indy. Tom qualified #4 at 6.039/243.90. He then defeated Jim Dunn in round one, 6.176/235.60 to 6.231/233.16. Round two saw Tom take out Len Imbrogno, 6.158/240.00 to 6.307/199.11, and he defeated Billy Meyer in the semis, 6.122/236.22 to 6.466/188.67. Joe and Tom were the quicker car in the final as well, but cagey Ed McCulloch got the win on a holeshot, 6.271/231.95 to 6.242/236.84. Tom qualified #7 at the Fallnationals with a 6.220/228.42. He beat a broken Sherm Gunn in round one, with a 6.050/238.72, but shut off to a 12-second loss to Don Prudhomme’s 6.080/238.09 in round 2. The team made it into a tough program for the Ontario Finals with a 15th qualifying 6.288/233.16. They lost to Roy Harris in round one, 6.376/226.13 to 6.469/226.70. Notes: Photo from Orange County. Ran 6.091/237.46 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80. | At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR, McCulloch made his debut driving the "Super Shops" car. It was quite spectacular when the car caught fire on his first pass ever and was seriously damaged. He was OK. Ed qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.14/243.90. In the first round, he got out of shape and slowed to an 8.13 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.16. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11, but again got crossed up in the first round, and his 6.83/153.06 lost to Paul Smith's 6.11/229 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.18/230.76. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.38/209.30 when alternate Dave Condit (filling in for Don Prudhomme) broke. His 6.21/226.70 beat Mike Dunn in Bill Schifsky's Mustang II in the semifinals. In the final, McCulloch ran Sherm Gunn. Gunn had problems and slowed to a 9.95/84 while Ed got the victory with a 6.12/236.84. On May 4, Ed was in Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 points race. He qualified #1 with a 6.14/236.84, but he lost in a dual tire smoker in the first round. Hank Johnson won with a 6.74 over Ed's slightly quicker 6.72. At the third Division 6 race at OCIR, Ed qualified #2 with a 6.13/225 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.03. McCulloch's 6.35/234.37 beat a tire-smoking Jim Dunn in the first round. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen. In June, the "Super Shops" team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.25/223.32 qualified #14 in the field. He beat Tripp Shumake in round one, and a 6.26/226.70 beat Dale Pulde in round two. But in the semifinals, he had a header come loose, and he shut off, giving Tom Hoover an easy ride into the final. The team failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the NHRA Summernationals, Ed lasted until the second round, where he lost to Billy Meyer. At the NHRA Division 5 race at Bonneville Raceway, McCulloch lost in the semifinals to Rob Williams. His 6.68/208 lost to Rob's 6.44/200. We formerly listed 6.04 for this car this year. Removing until we get validation. That did not occur on the NHRA national event trail, where Ed ran the 6.091 at Indy and plenty of 6.1s. His 243.90 from the Winters was his fastest speed of the year. Ed won NHRA Indy in this car. The OCIR fire happened late in '79, not sure if it was at the MM. In January '80 ND reported a 6.08 at the Fremont Opener, where Beadle ran 5.92/244. - Joe Moore

Notes: Henry didn't run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. However, he failed to reach the late rounds there. In April, Henry was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.34/231.36, but the race was rain-delayed and Harrison was unable to run the Fremont race as he went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 6.12/234.98. This was a race where Don Prudhomme, Dale Pulde, and Raymond Beadle all failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, Henry lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Henry's best of 6.29/231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.69/203.17. A 6.89/196.64 beat Bill Chappelle in the first round, but in the semifinals, the Corvette lost high gear and he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. Harrison was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of June. A 6.38 qualified last in the eight-car field. He beat Gordie Bonin in a close first-round race with the "L. A. Hooker's" 6.48/216.34 defeating Bonin's 6.52/229. In the semifinals, the Corvette failed to fire and Rob Williams soloed into the finals.

Notes: After a great '89 season that saw them win the NHRA Funny Car Championship, Larson and crew chief Maynard Yingst put forth another strong effort in '90. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.37/273.97 qualified #4. Bruce improved to a 5.34/277.43 in the first round to beat Al Hofmann, and a further improving 5.31/271.16 in round two stopped Scott Kalitta's 5.44/250. But in the semifinals, an off-pace 5.54/267.06 lost to K.C. Spurlock's 5.39/276. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Larson qualified #5 with a 5.34/273.14. He set a track record 5.24 in the first round, while beating Johnny West. In the second round, he ran a 5.26/272.72 solo when Glenn Mikres broke and could not run. In the semifinals, he met Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" Probe. Both drivers had problems, and Larson recovered first to win with a 6.43/147.05 over Mark's 10.97/71. In the final, he again had problems and shut off to 13.18, while Dale Pulde won a 5.37. He got into the final at the next NHRA event as well, the Supernationals at Houston. Bruce qualified #2 with a 5.30/277.69. He got lucky in round one, where his 6.63/186.11 advanced over a troubled Al Hofmann. In round two, he picked up the pace to a 5.31/265.72 to stop Spurlock's 5.34/275. Ed McCulloch smoked the tires against him in the semifinals and his 5.32/268.97 advanced into the finals. There, he ran John Force. Unfortunately, Larson smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.70-98.72, while Force won with a 5.36/272. The Gatornationals at Gainesville was the next stop on the NHRA tour. Bruce ran 5.48/271.00 to qualify #8. He beat Richard Hartman in the first round, while a strong 5.28/272 beat Mikres in round two. He got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, losing to McCulloch's 5.44/265. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Larson set a track record of 280.89 in qualifying. The accompanying ET of 5.24 qualified #2. He lost a motor in the first round, but his 5.26/273 still beat Doc Halladay. After putting in a new bullet, a 5.28/269 in round two beat Jerry Caminito. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner McCulloch. The Mid-South Nationals at Memphis were next on the NHRA schedule. A 5.28 qualified #3 in the field. Larson lasted until the semifinals before his 5.50 lost to Oswald's 5.40. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #5. He beat Tim Grose in the first round before losing a blower and the race to McCulloch in round two. Tim Richards gave tuning tips. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Notes: Richard 'Dick' Branstner did not drive, but was contracted by Dodge to do several projects in the 1964/66 era. This was one, created as a mid-engine experimental to move weight rearward in the Dodge Dart compact body. The motor and tranmission was located just forward of the rear axle. This followed Branstner's Little Red Wagon, presented to Super Stock standout Bill "Maverick' Golden. Associate Jay Howell drove this car, first called the 'Dart Charger' and later repainted as the 'Polka-Dart.' The car was destroyed on July 11/1966 after being turned over to sponsored Dodge racer Don Garlits earlier that year for further development. driver Emery Cook was uninjured in that accident, a testimony to Branstner's careful construction. Chris Martin cited a best speed of 171 mph.

Notes: 1971 Woody car replaced the heavy '70 Cuda. Qualified second at Indy 9/71 with a 6.59 and won the race, defeating Dale Pulde with an ET of 6.64 at 223.32 mph. The win at the 1971 NHRA Nationals was the first for Ed McCulloch and was a springboard for his dominating 1972 season. The photo was taken late in 1971 at Ontario during the NHRA Supernationals and shows the car shortly after signing Revell as a sponsor.

At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he ran 6.632/221.67 to qualify #3 for the tough show, but in the first round, he lost an engine, and oil got under the rear wheels. He got way out of shape and almost crashed into his opponent, Dale Pulde, driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Pat qualified #7 at Ontario at 6.985/202.70. In round one, he lost a close one to Jake Johnston, 6.93/205 to 6.96/210.77. Woody Gilmore chassis.
