Notes: First year with Budweiser sponsorship. Crashed brand new car at press conference. Crashed rebuilt car at Winternationals. ET and MPH from either NHRA Fallnats or Finals (Ontario). Think MPH was on same run. I think he also got pole with that run for whichever. - Curt Swartz | Kenny started the '80 season with a runner-up finish to Don Prudhomme at the OCIR Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. At the NHRA Winternationals he qualified #2 with a 6.06-233.16. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round when he hit the guardrail. He got out of shape and ended up crossing the centerline and hitting the rail. He was OK but the Arrow body was wrecked. Bernstein went to Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet but failed to reach the finals. A 6.06 qualified #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals but he slept in the first round and his 6.18-232.55 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.24-229. A week later (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals but he failed to qualify for the eight car field. Kenny qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, running 6.11-241.93 for the spot. It was an eight car show and by qualifying #5, it set up a first round race with low qualifier Paul Smith in Larry Coogle's "Sting" Firebird. Paul won the race when Bernstein smoked the tires and shut off. On May 4, he was runner up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the rain delayed IHRA Dixie Nationals. At Bristol for another rain delayed event, the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 in the eight car show with a 6.21. He lasted until the semifinals where his 6.59 lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.44. The "Budweiser King" wasn't running that well at the NHRA Springnationals, only qualifying #10 with a 6.22-232.55. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He also lost in the first round at the next NHRA race, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Kenny qualified #7 in the eight car show but his 6.57-225.00 in the first round lost to Beadle's 6.29-226. He then went to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. It was another eight car field and his 6.33 qualified #5, setting up a first round encounter with low qualifier Prudhomme. It was a close race, but the "Snake's" 6.19 beat Kenny's 6.20. He won the NHRA Division Two race at Blaney, beating John Speelman in the final with a 6.43-233.16 (top speed). He earlier had set low ET at 6.37. At Englishtown, he qualified poorly, only getting the #11 spot and in the first round he lost to Prudhomme. Early in August,he was at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He qualified #7 in the eight car field with a 6.52 but in round one he smoked the tires to a shut off 12.40 that lost to Roy Harris' 6.30-236. Kenny was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Division One race. He ran well, making it into the final against future crew chief, Dale Armstrong, but he had problems and shut off giving Dale's 6.20-231 the victory.

Notes: Photo from Martin, MI, 1980. | Tom started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals for the second year in a row. He qualified #6 and in the final beat Don Prudhomme for the victory. He was hoping for a repeat at Pomona as well for the NHRA Winternationals but it didn't happen. He qualified #15 with a 6.20-230.76 and a 6.27 in the first round beat Billy Meyer's 6.32. In the second round he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 and in round one he beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.18-232 with a quick leaving 6.24-229.59. In round two, he improved to a 6.12-233.76 but lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.06-227 in the "Blue Max." He was at Green Valley Raceway at end end of March for the second NHRA Division Four race but he lost to John White's 7.29-226 in the first round with a quicker 7.09-219.51. Hoover set Low ET in qualifying first at the third NHRA Division Four race at Houston. There were only three FCs at the race and Tom soloed due to his top qualifying spot and ran 6.37-225.56 to advance to the final against John White. In the final, Hoover's Corvette developed problems and he shut down, giving White the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 6.10-236.84 qualified #4 in the eight car field. In round one, he ran 6.27 but he lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.25.

Notes: Photo from Columbus. Ran 6.091-237.46 at NHRA Indy 9/80. | At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR,McCulloch made his debut driving the "Super Shops" car. It was quite spectacular when on his first pass ever, the car caught fire and was seriously damaged. He was OK. Ed qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.14-243.90. He got out of shape in the first round and slowed to a 8.13 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.16. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 but once again got crossed up in the first round and his 6.83-153.06 lost to Paul Smith's 6.11-229 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Six Opener. Ed qualified #5 in the eight car show with a 6.18-230.76. He advanced past the first round with a 6.38-209.30 when alternate Dave Condit (filling in for Don Prudhomme) broke. In the semifinals, his 6.21-226.70 beat Mike Dunn in Bill Schifsky's Mustang II. In the final, McCulloch ran Sherm Gunn. Gunn had problems and slowed to a 9.95-84 while Ed got the victory with a 6.12-236.84. On May 4, Ed was at Seattle for the NHRA Division Six points race. He qualified first with a 6.14-236.84 but in the first round he lost in a dual tire smoker. Hank Johnson won with a 6.74 over Ed's slightly quicker 6.72. At the third Division Six race at OCIR, Ed qualified #2 with a 6.13-225 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.03. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.35-234.37 beat a tire smoking Jim Dunn. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen. In June, the "Super Shops" team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.25-223.32 qualified #14 in the field. He beat Tripp Shumake in round one and a 6.26-226.70 beat Dale Pulde in round two. But in the semifinals he had a header come loose and he shut off, giving Tom Hoover an easy ride into the final. The team failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the NHRA Summernationals, Ed lasted until the second round where he lost to Billy Meyer. At the NHRA Division Five race at Bonneville Raceway, McCulloch lost in the semifinals to Rob Williams. His 6.68-208 lost to Rob's 6.44-200.

Notes: Henry didn't run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. However, he failed to reach the late rounds there. In April, Henry was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Six race. He qualified #7 in the eight car show with a 6.34-231.36, but the race was rain delayed and Harrison was unable to run the Fremont race as he went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 6.12-234.98. This was a race where Don Prudhomme, Dale Pulde, and Raymond Beadle all failed to qualify for the eight car show. Unfortunately, Henry lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Henry's best of 6.29-231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #4 in the eight car show with a 6.69-203.17. A 6.89-196.64 beat Bill Chappelle in the first round but in the semifinals, the Corvette lost high gear and he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. Harrison was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of June. A 6.38 qualified last in the eight car field. He beat Gordie Bonin in a close first round race with the "L. A. Hooker's" 6.48-216.34 defeating Bonin's 6.52-229. In the semifinals, the Corvette failed to fire and Rob Williams soloed into the finals.

Notes: Titanium Chassis. The '71 Pinto was the team car to a '71 Mach 1 driven by Henry Harrison. With trick titanium Woody chassis, the cars were somewhat lighter. Although they started with Fords, both ended up with Hemis early in the year. Harrison qualified the Mach 1 low at '71 Indy (6.54) but Pulde eventually made the final while running 6.70's, losing to the Ace as the Pinto went up in flames. In '72 the Pinto was painted red and the Mach 1 was replaced by a blue Vega. | Pinto ran 223 at Minneapolis 71. - Dale Pulde, 7/03/15

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Ran 5.94-240 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. | Prudhomme had an interesting season. He was one of only six drivers to run in the 5.60's. In six IHRA starts he made the final round in four of them but in NHRA competition, he was winless for the second straight year. In fact, he failed to make an NHRA final. The last time that happened was in '72. Don started the season in the best way, by winning. He won the AHRA Winternationals in Jan. He qualified first with a 6.23 on the tricky surface. He advanced past the first round when opponent Bill McCahill crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 6.46-218 beat Bryan Raines in the "Impulse" Mustang. A final round 6.66-208 took the victory over Henry Harrison who had earlier set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.15-232. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A first round 5.95-217.91 beat Ed McCulloch's quicker 5.90-243 but he shut off with problems in the second round letting John Force single. At the Gatornationals, 24 cars showed for the sixteen car field. Don ran 5.94-240.64 to qualify #13. Once again he had problems and shut off, this time in the first round, advancing John Collins. Things went much better the following week (March 25) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. The track record going into this race was a 6.02 by Raymond Beadle. Prudhomme broke both ends of the track record in qualifying first with a 5.79-254.23. He got past the first round easily and then beat Force's 6.00-241 in the second round with a 5.93-241. In the semifinals, both Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and Don ran 5.96's but the "Snake" got the win. In the final he met up with his old friend, Tom McEwen. Don had problems and limped across with a 15.58-58.17 while McEwen ran 5.91-248 for the victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Don qualified #10 with a 5.92 but he lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Also in May he ran at Famoso for the Bakersfield meet. An eight car FC show was run and 10 cars attempted to qualify. Don ran 5.81 to qualify #2. A first round 5.72 at a career best speed of 257.14 beat Gary Thompson but he hurt his motor and was out of competition. Needless to say, that pass was good for Low ET and Top Speed. Don failed to qualify for the eight car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified first at Bristol on June 3 for the IHRA Springnationals. A 5.74 (Low ET) got the spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Meyer in the first round. On June 10 he qualified #5 with a 5.85-252.80 at the NHRA Springnationals. A first round 5.87-246.57 beat Paul Smith, while a second round 5.99-212.36 advanced when Force broke. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 12.24-69 that lost to McEwen's 5.87-251. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, he qualified #5 with a 6.01 but lost to Jim Head's 6.06 in round two with a 6.13.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. Ex Billy Meyer 82 Pontiac Firebird. At Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals on Aug 26, Smart qualified #11 with a 6.01-229.99. He failed to reach the finals but it was still a good outing for the newcomer to the Funny Car ranks. Jody made his NHRA FC debut at Indy for the U.S. Nationals. He did pretty well, qualifying #6 with a 5.78-256.41. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and lost to eventual winner Jim Head. A week later he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals where he qualified #2 but lost early.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94-249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lated until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89-244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87-243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02-248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98-246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93-245 beat Ron Correnti putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93-248.48 for the victory. Things reverted bad to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen car show with a 5.98 but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95-234.13 but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83-251.53 and lost early.

Notes: Confirmed 262.08 at Ennis at first nitro match race at the track (before the national event) August 1986. Times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Billy started the '86 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.75-241.28. He was a little late out of the gate in the first round as his 5.85-242.58 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.91-241 in Joe Pisano's Daytona. He attended an eight car show at Atlanta where he qualified #3 with a 6.20-210.28. He shut off against Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Meyer qualified #3 with a 5.76-251.11. He beat Jim Head in the first round before smoking the tires and losing to Tom McEwen in round two. Firebird raceway hosted the Coor's FC race in April and Billy had tire-smoking problems on both his runs; he lost to John Force and Johnny West with times of 12.62 and 6.38-205.01. Needless to say, he failed to make it to the finals. On April 20 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he ran 5.75-252.10 to qualify #3. He beat Tom Hoover before smoking the tires to a 6.12-244.16 loss to Ed McCulloch who also had traction problems at 6.02-242. In May, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. He ran 5.84-252.80 to qualify #3 in the eight car field. He stepped up to a 5.77-250 in the first round to beat Rodney Flournoy's 6.46 Firebird but in round two, a 5.78-253.52 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.76-245. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.75-256.99 qualified #4. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.99-230 with a 5.76-253.66. A second round 5.89-241.80 advanced when Head got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 5.86-245.40 beat Johnny West's 5.94-244 in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against McEwen. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost with an 8.37-94.59 while the "Goose" took the victory with a 5.78-249. Meyer qualified #5 with a 5.83-242.65 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. At the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.84-240.64 qualified #5 for the show. In the first round, Billy's ailing 9.22-91.53 advanced when Bruce Larson smoked the tires and shut off. In the second round he fouled away a 5.81 and lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Billy qualified #4 with a 5.66-255.82. He beat Head in the first round but in the second round the Mustang broke on the line giving Hoover a free ride into the semifinals. He lost early at the NHRA Mile High Nationals as well, after qualifying #6 with a 5.91-191.53. Meyer qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88-245.23. It was dreaded because if you qualified in that spot, you faced the number one qualifier in your first race. That's exactly what Billy did, but he lucked out when low qualifier Bernstein fouled away a 5.81 while Meyer motored into the second round with a 6.12-180.00. In the second round, he ran a 5.96-238.09 that lost to Hoover's 5.91-256.

Notes: This car made its debut in August and made shakedown runs at OCIR before heading east for the NHRA Nationals. At Indy Don used consistent low seven second times to capture his first NHRA National Event. He beat Leroy Goldstein (Ramchargers) in the final 7.00-214.79 to a losing 7.14-211.26. | Don debuted this car at OCIR on Aug 29 for an eight car show. He ran really well, qualifying first with a 7.02-211.76 (top speed and a track record), well ahead of Mike Snively's 7.19 in the #2 spot. In the first round, he set low ET with a 6.93 (track record) at 210.28 to beat alternate Johnny Wright in the "Fiberglass Trends" Javelin. Unfortunately, on that pass, Don had shelled a rear axle and was unable to compete in the semifinals. A week later (Sept 7), he got his big win at Indianapolis for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. There he qualified with a 7.07 and in the first round his 7.17 beat Leonard Hughes quicker 7.10. In the second round, he ran another 7.07 at 210.28 to beat Jay Howell's 7.64-152 in Don Prudhomme's 'Cuda. Schumacher picked up to a 7.01-212.26 in the semifinals to beat Bobby Rowe's 7.18-205 in the "Super Duster" and in the final, he was just a tick of the clock away from the "sixes" with a 7.00-214.79 (top speed) that beat Leroy Goldstein's 7.14-211 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger for the title.

He started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals over Gary Burgin and then he went to Pomona for NHRA's Winternationals where he qualified #8 with a 6.26-229. He ran 6.24 and 6.18 in the first two rounds on the way to meeting Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. There he ran another 6.24 to beat Tripp. In the final he met low qualifier, Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked his tires and Hoover ran a consistent 6.29-232.55 for the victory. He made the finals at the next NHRA event as well, the Gatornationals in March. Tom qualified #3 with a 6.22. He beat Tom McEwen in round two with a 6.56-230 and a 6.50-226 beat a tire smoking Don Prudhomme in the semi finals. In the final he ran Gordie Bonin and despite Tom's quicker and faster 6.84-227.27 he lost to Bonin's 6.93-224. Also in March he was runner-up to McEwen at the NHRA Division Four race at LaPlace. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight car field and Tom ran 6.38-231.36 to qualify sixth. It was a hard show to make as Billy Meyer, Gene Snow, Shumake, and John Collins among others failed to qualify. A first round 6.44-223.32 lost to Beadle's 6.37-229. Hoover then ran at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals where he qualified first with a track record 6.22 at 232.56. He failed to make the finals but he ran well. He also failed to make it into the final rounds at the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus but he qualified well, running 6.15 for the #3 spot in the field. Tom was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals later in June. The Corvette was running strong going 6.19-242.60 (Top Speed) in his first round win and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.21. In the final, he ran McEwen but Hoover had problems and shut off. Hoover's 242.60 was a new AHRA speed record. In July he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Tom qualified #7 with a 6.20-238.09. A first round 6.23 beat Al Hanna but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to John Force. Also in July he finished runner-up to Pete Williams in the "Chi Town Hustler" at the NHRA Division Three race at Union Grove. At the U.S. 131 FC Nationals Tom lost in the first round to Frank Oglesby. At the PHR Championships at U.S. 131 he failed to qualify. Tom then qualified first at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City with a 6.22-232.55. He got crossed up in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hovland. At the AHRA World Finals, he again qualified first, this time with a 6.30-225 but again he failed to make the finals. During the year he also set a 6.06 track record at Fremont and a 6.07 at the Indy Nationals on Labor Day.

Notes: First FC in the 5.20s with a 5.255 at Ennis IHRA 1988, followed by a quicker 5.230. Photo from Columbus 1988. Best NHRA times of 5.252 at Houston Fall 88 and 277.26 at Maple Grove 9/88. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing that featured an eight car FC show. McCulloch qualified #2 with a 5.56-261.62 behind John Force's 5.34. These two would end up meeting in the final. The "Ace" got there by first beating Ron Fassl with a 5.60-260.86 and in the semifinals, a 5.73-255.68 got around a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. John was running two tenths quicker with 5.40 and 5.41 times. In the final, it was a foregone conclusion. John beat Ed's 5.73-204.08 with a 5.47-267 to take the title. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.39 (low ET) got the pole but in the first round, the "Ace" smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a first round 5.69-256.41 beat a tire smoking Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but in the semifinals against Tripp Shumake, the Cutlass broke on the line. A week later (March 20) he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It was a weekend he would rather forget as he failed to qualify and was only third alternate for the show. How things change in a week, as on March 27 he was low qualifier with a 5.54-258.62 at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, a first round 5.75 lost to Scott Kalitta's holeshot 5.77.

Notes: This needs to be substantiated. We have what appears to be the same car running into summer 1970, still as Nelson Carter's Super Chief. -- RT | Previously posted: This was the '69 Charger of Nelson Carter (Super Chief). Car remained intact except for change in paint job, lettering and graphics.

Notes: Photo is the car at Lions just after getting sponsors. Don Burns lettering was shortly moved to space in front of Durachrome name. This chassis was damaged at OCIR and new chassis was built just before two full seasons on U.S.A national tour. Second car had darker shadowing along body lines.

Notes: Tom debuted a new Daytona at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He had lots of problems and ended up losing two blowers, one in qualifying, and one in a first round loss against Del Worsham. He qualified #11 with a 5.39-269.92. He went to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran 5.43-272.72 to qualify #10. He lost to Chuck Etchells in the first round. At the seventh NHRA race of the '92 season, he was in Ohio for the Springnationals where a 5.40-256.04 qualified #7. He picked up to a 5.33 at 255.97 to beat Jerry Caminito's 5.59-252 in the first round but in the second round he lost to Cruz Pedregon. He made the trip up north for the NHRA Grandnationals at the end of June. He qualified #7 with a 5.44-267.45 and a first round 5.55-249.03 beat a tire smoking Gary Densham. Once again, he lost to Pedregon in the second round. Tom's 5.46-256.04 finished second best to Cruz's 5.39-274. This started to become routine when at Englishtown for the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, he qualified #8 with a 5.33-264.62 and in round one beat Whit Bazemore's 5.56-263 with a 5.36-258.32. But once again in round two for the third straight race he came up against Pedregon. This time Hoover lost oil pressure on the line and shut off giving Cruz a solo into the semifinals. At Denver in the middle of July for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Tom again made it into the second round. He qualified #6 with a 5.44-257.28 and then improved to a 5.37-265.56 in the first round while beating Norm Wilding. But in the second round, his 5.57-229.06 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.41-262.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 5.193 National Record at 3/89 Houston Supernationals and 5.172 National Record at Indy 89. | Don's last season driving an FC. He started the year by qualifying #12 with a 5.47-261.39 at the Winternationals at Pomona. In the first round, a 5.50-263.92 lost to Bruce Larson's 5.32-259. At Houston for the Supernationals, he ran a 5.19 (Low ET) at 265.80 to qualify first. He lasted until round two when he smoked the tires and lost to Larson again. He qualified badly at the Gatornationals where a 5.52-261.09 was #15 on the list. He lost to Art Hendy in the first round. At the fourth NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Don qualified #7 with a 5.50. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one and a 5.53-252.31 beat R.C. Sherman in round two. But another 5.53-250.62 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.48-263 in the semifinals. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals and another semifinal finish. He qualified #6 with a 5.38-266.74 and beat Sherman in round one and in round two, a 5.37-268 beat Art Hendey. In the semifinal, he should have won as his 5.39 was better than his opponent Mark Oswald's 5.41. But Oswald got him on the tree. He qualified first at the Cajun Nationals with a 5.38-264.55 and ran a first round solo when Sherman broke. He got one back from Larson in round two when his 5.44-261 beat Larson's 5.50. In the semifinals, both he and Dunn smoked the tires but Mike got the win. He qualified first again at National Trail with a 5.27-272.72 for the Springnationals. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track in the first round and smoked the tires to a loss against Tom Hoover. The next event was the Grandnationals in Canada. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.57-257.51. In round one, a 5.72-256.99 beat Gary Densham's 5.79-242. He got another one over Larson in round two when Bruce broke. In the semifinals, a strong running Kenny Bernstein beat him with a 5.48-254 to Don's 5.73-231. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the ninth race of the season, the Summernationals. Prudhomme set a track record 5.27 in qualifying first. He was running good, making it into the semifinals against Bernstein before breaking just off the line in their semifinal race. At Denver, for the Mile High Nationals, Don helped save Don Gay Jr. in qualifying. Gay had hit the wall during a qualifying run and was knocked unconscious. The car continued down the track with the now bent in headers lighting the body on fire. It finally rolled to a stop but one of the pressurized fire bottles exploded, blowing the body into pieces. Gay was still unconscious. Prudhomme had been in the other lane on the run and he came to Gay's aid since he still had his fire suit on. He pulled Gay out of the car. In the actual race, the "Snake" qualified #12 with a 5.89-249.16 but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Things went better at the next event, the California Nationals, where Don took his first win of the year. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying first with a 5.30-276.49. In the first round, another 5.30-268.65 beat Kalitta. In round two a 5.38-268.73 beat Jim White and in the semifinals he beat John Force with a 5.35-268.09. He stayed consistent in the final with a 5.32-272.64 taking the title over Oswald's 5.36-274. Seattle International was the next stop for the Seafair Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.33-271.98 but set Low ET in the first round with a 5.29-271 over Tom Hoover. A second round 5.38-268.33 beat Force but a semifinal 5.40-263.77 lost to Bernstein's 5.34-276.
