Notes: Tom started the '74 season by qualifying #4 in the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12 with a 6.57. His first-round 6.64/203.16 beat Joe Lee, but he and Gordon Swearingen, driving Jim Terry's Mustang, both broke in round two. McEwen's coasting 14.95 lost to Swearingen's 12.77. Another 6.57 qualified #13 at the AHRA Winternationals. He improved to a 6.49/225.00 in the first round to beat Richard Tharp's 6.50/204. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.47/195. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's best of 6.70/215.31 failed to qualify, and to add insult, he crashed into the safety net during qualifying. Early in March, he was at Fresno Dragway for its Winter Race of Champions event. It was an eight-car show, and Tom qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. Tom lost their race with a 6.71, but the "Ace" did not get an ET on his run. He won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 31, beating McCulloch in the final with a 6.41/212. In getting there, he ran a 6.50 over Mike Van Sant's 6.66 in the "Hawaiian," a single (6.43) over Don Schumacher, who had lost fire, and a semifinal 6.42 over an out of shape Danny Ongais. It was a strong showing for the "Goose." In mid-April, he had one of the 30 FCs competing at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. Clarence Bailey broke against him in the opening round, and Tom advanced with a 6.91/187.61. He also got a solo in round two, but he hurt the engine during his run and could not return. The following was (April 27), he was at Seattle for the fifth annual Northwest Open. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut down against Kenny Goodell. Tom ran 6.705/215.31 at Pomona, 6.624/220.58 at Columbus, 6.620/216.34 at Englishtown, 6.474/231.36 at Indy, and 6.515/229.00 at NHRA Ontario 10/74.

Notes: Scott used a 5.40/279.06 to qualify #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.78/218.44 lost to Art Hendey's 5.54/260. He broke through with his first-ever NHRA national event win at the Supernationals on March 5, defeating Bruce Larson in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.32 and set Top Speed at 279.58. Scott was one of 21 Funny Car drivers at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. It was a tough weekend for Scott as he had used up two engines in qualifying. He qualified #4 and then beat R.C. Sherman in round one, with a 5.69/256.71. He defeated a blower-popping Ed McCulloch in the semifinal with a 5.85/241.65. Still, it cost him another engine, and Kalitta never showed up for his race against Tony McCallum in the final. The following weekend (May 29), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.57 qualified #8. He lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to John Martin. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Sprignationals. His 5.50/272.97 qualified #11. In round one, his 5.59/240.32 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.33/272. His best times were a 5.281 at Ennis Fall and 279.58 (Top Speed) at Houston Spring. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Roy ran a career-best (up to this point) 6.130 at 237.46 to qualify #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen in the opening round of competition. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he ran 6.31/230.76 to qualify #7 in the eight-car field. Harris' first-round 6.35 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. At the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, Harris reached the final against Al Segrini, but had problems and shut down to 9.50-78.12 for the runner-up spot. He earlier had set Top Speed at 229.00. Roy was back at Maple Grove for the "Jungle Jim" Memorial Funny Car Championships. In the first round, his 6.37/214.28 lost to Tom Prock's 6.35/217. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. There, he finished runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Indy didn't go the greatest for Harris as his best of 6.21/239.36 left him as the fifth alternate for the NHRA US Nationals. The 6.130/239.36 were his NHRA national event best times for 1979. Where did Roy run 6.03/241.93?

Notes: Bernstein was one of the first FC racers o transport his car with an eighteen-wheeler. The Peterbilt also carried two spare engines as he entered the '79 season with four Ed Pink 1/2 strokers. Kenny failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He did much better on February 18 for Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified for the eight-car show and lasted until the final, where he finished runner-up to Tripp Shumake. He then went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he easily won his first-round race. In the second round, he ran 6.55/216.34 to beat a tire-shaking Shumake. The car got out of shape in the semifinal, and Kenny shut off to 9.53 in a loss to Jim Adolph's 6.29. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.33/229.59, but he got crossed up again and lost to Al Segrini in the first round. The following week (March 18), Kenny was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.17 but failed to reach the finals. On April 22, he won the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta by stopping Dale Pulde in the final. The NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge was postponed by rain and run on May 2. It was here that Kenny got his first NHRA National event victory. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.32/231.95. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.55/222 with a 6.36/234.98 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, a 6.49/202.55 beat Ron Colson's tire-smoking "Hawaiian." The final saw Kenny face future superstar John Force, and Force had his transmission break giving Kenny the victory with a 6.45/233.76. Bernstein was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 6.17 qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.19/232.55 beat a tire-smoking Pulde, but in the semifinals, Paul Smith in the "Entertainer" got a jump on him, and his 6.39/226 beat Kenny's quicker 6.31/230.76. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.20/233.76 but lost to Force's 6.27/220 in the first round with a 6.36/229.00. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, he again ran well. A 6.24 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. A 6.34 in the first round beat Smith's 6.61, and in the semifinals, his 6.57 beat John Pott's 6.95 in the "Mr. Norm" car. That put him in the final with Pulde. Unfortunately, Bernstein took a nap in the final, and his 6.31/223.88 finished runner-up to Dale's 6.47/234. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.35, but in the first round, he fouled against Pulde. The NHRA Summernationals was Kenny's next stop, and he qualified #6 there with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.28 lost to Shumake's 6.23. He was in another final round the following week (July 22) at the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.15 qualified #2 for the eight-car show, and he worked his way into the final against Tim Grose. His 6.35/222.22 finished second best to Grose's 6.23/211. Bernstein followed the NHRA tour to Canada in early August for the Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/234.37. He improved to a 6.25 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Segrini's 6.19. Kenny failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran one round, and the eight lowest ETs advanced into the show regardless of winning or losing. He was runner-up to Billy Meyer at the NHRA Division 4 race at Baton Rouge. His final round 6.47/226.13 lost to Meyer's 6.41/232. At Indy, Kenny's 6.108/231.36 qualified #13 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. In the opening round, his 6.120/241.93 lost to Ron Colson's 6.06/236 in the "Hawaiian." The Indy times were Kenny's best of the year. He followed that up with a big win at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships, where he stopped Roy Harris in the final. The following week, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.27/227.84 qualified #12. In round one, he improved to 6.24/238.09 but lost to Jim Dunn's 6.10/238.

Notes: The Snake's first funny car. Ron Scrima exhibition Engineering chassis, Keith Black 426 with a B&M TorqueFlite. Jay Howell drove this car at '70 Indy Nationals, qualifying with a 6.99 while Prudhomme was running and winning Top Fuel Eliminator. Prudhomme also ran 6.94 at Union Grove, and 7.07 at 212.26. | exhibition Engineering built the 118" chassis and Keith Black built the 1,800 hp 426 Hemi. The Fiberglass body was a product of Fiberglass Ltd. It used an Engle cam and M/T rods with Forgedtrue pistons. A B&M modified TorqueFlite delivered the power to the rear wheels. Don debuted this car at Beeline on January 25 for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.68 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.57 in the "Hawaiian." He failed to qualify the 'Cuda at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, so he concentrated on his Top Fuel effort instead. On February 14, he was at Lions for an eight-car show that saw 30 cars attempt to qualify. Prudhomme qualified #1 with a 7.23/206. He set Low ET and Top Speed (both track records) in the first round, with a 7.18/208.81 that beat Rich Siroonian's 7.55/171 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. In the semifinals, he faced the "Mongoose" Tom McEwen and his 7.20/207.36 moved into the final over Tom's out of shape shut off run. In the final, it was the "Snake" who had problems and shut down to a 12.74/53 mph run that finished runner-up to Pat Minick's 7.19/204 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." A week later (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 7.30/206.89 (Top Speed). A first-round 8.51/114.94 advanced when Charlie Allen fouled, but, in the semifinals, Gene Conway stepped up to a best-ever 7.27/201 to beat Don's 7.50/194.38. In early March, he was back at Lions for the second AHRA Grand American race. This was the race where Don Garlits lost part of his foot when his clutch exploded in the Top Fuel final. The accident damaged the Christmas tree and the Funny Car final had to be flag started. Prudhomme was in that final, facing Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Danny got the victory with a 7.25/201 over Don's 7.41/204. His next appearance in the Funny Car was at a best of three match race against Tommy Grove at Capitol on April 11. Grove won the first race with a holeshot 7.50/193 over Don's quicker 7.35/202.24. Prudhomme came back to win the match by winning the last two races with times of 8.25/190.66 over Grove's out of shape 8.53/167, and 7.64/193.96 when Tom's transmission let go on the line. He was at Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships where in the first round, both he and Malcolm Durham ran 7.65 with Durham getting the win. Prudhomme got back into the show on the "break rule" and advanced past round two when Ron Umbach fouled against him. In the semifinals, his 7.86 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.16. At the fourth AHRA Grand American race at Frontier International Raceway, he finally got a victory. His times were not that impressive with a 7.80/187.50 winning in his first-round race and in round two he actually lost with his 7.84/181.08 falling to Howell's 7.69/185. But he got back in on the "break rule" and faced Howell again in the semifinals. This time Jay lost a transmission in his Mustang and Don advanced into the final with a 10.36. His final round foe was Snow and Gene fouled giving Prudhomme the win. ET from (11/70 Popular Hot Rodding) MPH from Union Grove WI (8/01/70 Drag News)

Notes: Pulde started his '81 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.19/220.04. His 6.25/231.95 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.11/241 in Johnny Loper's Arrow in the opening round. He did much better on March 8 at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Pulde qualified #1 with a 6.241/216.34, and in the first round, he beat a tire-smoking John Force with a 6.28/223.88. The Challenger had both front wheels off the track for most of the run in the second round, but his 6.68/217 still came out on top over Dennis Geisler's troubled 10.18. In the semifinal, he advanced with a 6.27 when Bob Pickett was shut off on the line with an oil leak. He took the victory in the final over Dale Armstrong with a 6.26/229. He had another good showing the following week (March 15) at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.04/233.16 qualified the "War Eagle" in the #8 spot. In the first round, he beat John Collins' wheelstanding Datsun with a 6.10. He ran an engine saving 13.94 in the second round when Armstrong was unable to run. In the semifinal, a 6.33/223.32 beat Shumake's 6.75/174. All looked well for another victory, but Gordie Bonin stopped him with a 6.18/241 in the final. Dale ran 6.21/223.3 in a runner-up effort. On March 22, he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.18/236. Pulde made it into the semifinal before losing to Kenny Bernstein. Things did not go well in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held near the end of April. Dale's 6.21 failed to qualify for the eight-car field that had a 6.16 "bump." Dale won the NHRA Eastern Regional on May 3 at Raceway Park. He beat Tim Grose in the final with a 6.02 (Low ET). In June, at the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.25/216.34 qualified #15, and he lost to Roy Harris in the first round. He qualified #15 again at the next NHRA show he attended, the Summernationals at Englishtown. This time, he got the spot with a 6.20/231.95. He got around a tire-smoking Gary Burgin in the first round with a 6.14/234.37. But in the second round, he shut down to a 10.16 loss to Don Prudhomme. Pulde was at the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol in July. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show, but he met up with low qualifier Billy Meyer in the first round, smoked the tires, and lost. Dale ran a 5.97 in qualifying for the NHRA US Nationals, and it only placed him #5 in the tough field. He lasted until the second round, where he ran a 6.15 that lost to Raymond Beadle's 5.92 in the "Blue Max." It was back to Bristol on September 13 for the IHRA US Open. Dale qualified #3 in the eight-car show, and the first-round beat Al Segrini with a 6.11/235.60 to the "Super Brut's" 6.29/219. In the semifinal, he smoked the tires to a 12.73 and lost to Paul Smith driving the "Entertainer." Fremont hosted the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals on October 4, and Pulde set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.943/227.84. An off-pace first-round 6.34/229.00 lost to Burgin's 6.09/229. He closed out the NHRA season by qualifying #4 with a 6.01/234.98 at OCIR on October 18 for the World Finals. Dale lasted until the semifinals before smoking the tires to a 6.92/154.10 loss to Jim Dunn's 6.06/238. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Dale ran well, but to reach the final, you had to have one of the two lowest ETs after three rounds of racing. He didn't get into the final, but he turned in some good times. A 6.16/226.70 beat Gary Densham and in his third race, a 6.10/237.46 beat Tim Grose. All in all, it was a good season for the "War Eagle" team. Dale's best NHRA times were the 5.943 at Fremont and 241.93 at Indy. Where was the 245 run?

Notes: In January, John started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His track record 5.34 at 266.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He then made his way to the final by running 5.40/268.85 over Johnny West's 5.93/243 in the "Hawaiian" and 5.41/267.85 in the semi-final when Kenny Bernstein broke. In the final, he faced second qualifier Ed McCulloch, and his 5.47/267.06 got him his first victory of the season. The following week (February 7), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.44/274.13 qualified #5. He best West's 5.98/234 in the opening round with a 5.49/267.22. In round two, he improved to 5.42/272.64 to stop Bruce Larson's 5.58/259. But in the semi-finals, he smoked the tires to a 6.40/168.25 in a loss to eventual winner Dale Pulde who won with a 5.42/269. Shortly after that, he was at Baylands Raceway for its East/West drags. Four FCs were competing in a roundabout race. Force first ran 5.74/241.93 to beat Pulde's wheelstanding 10.84/77. He then ran 5.61/252.80 over West's 5.64/245. These two would come back for the final, and Force won with a track record 5.51 at 248.61 over West's 5.82/221. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified second to Tripp Shumake. A 5.40 (Low ET) at 268.85 advanced in round one when Scott Kalitta broke. Bernstein shut down just after leaving the line against him in the semi-final, and John won with a 5.45/267.06. He faced Shumake in the final, and he fouled. His 5.98/249.30 lost to Tripp's 11.10-96. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the future, Force would often win there. But back in '88, he was still getting his feet wet. He ran 5.40/265.64 and 5.36/270.02 in qualifying. The 5.36 gave him the pole. In the first round, the transmission failed, and he lost to Tom Hoover's 7.66/118. The rain-delayed IHRA Supernationals was run at DeSoto at the end of March. In the first round, his 5.64 beat Shumake's 5.69, but the car broke against Kalitta in the semi-final. He had qualified second at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals with a 5.32/279.50, but the race was rained out, and he could not return as IHRA ran it the same day as the Bakersfield March Meet. This race was now run in mid-April, and Force set both Top Speed and Low ET during qualifying at 5.57/259.36. But it didn't stick around long in eliminations, as in the first round, his rear slick came off, and he had to watch as Jim Adolph soloed into the semi-final with a 6.58/171. He also qualified #2 at Atlanta, where his 5.54/260.11 followed McCulloch's 5.53/269 at the NHRA Southern Nationals. After an easy first-round win, he got another in round two when Jim Head smoked the tires against him and shut down. Force advanced with a 5.58/264. He then ran 5.60/263 to defeat Bernstein's 5.72 in the semi-final. He faced McCulloch in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Ed's track record 5.52/266 win over John's 5.60/265.17. The team was having a rough time during qualifying at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.60 was followed by a tire-smoking, shut off 22.84. He then ran 5.55/263.69 and came back out and smoked the tires again. Still, the 5.55 qualified #1. But he was upset in the first round, where Chuck Etchells' 5.65/254 put his 5.78/254.23 on the trailer. After this race, Force was sitting in fifth place in NHRA points. Photo from Columbus 1988.

This was a clash of two good racers who rarely got out of the first round this year. Unfortunately for Dean, Hoover won one of his few opening rounds with his best ET of the season. Pomona Finals: 5.050/289.20 Q7. Lost R1 to Okazaki, 5.19/299 to 5.550/254.52. Like Hoover, one had to wonder what caused the inconsistency for some teams this year. Inconsistent clutch discs?

Shortly after that (July 1), he was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Thirteen FCs showed up and attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Santucci's 5.91/254.50 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, his opponent, low qualifier Jerry Caminito broke, and Dominic's tire-shaking 5.99/253.74 advanced. Richard Hartman smoked the tires against him in the semi-final, and Santucci ran 5.68/262.26 to win. He faced Chuck Etchells in the final, and Santucci set both Low ET and Top Speed to win at 5.65/263.79. The speed was also a new track record. The following week, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.44/272.64 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Etchells in the first round. He was at Atco Raceway in August for the IHRA Eastern Nationals. In the first round, he ran Carl Ruth, who was debuting his new '56 Ford. Dominic's 5.47/270.04 beat Ruth's 6.05. He broke against Etchells in the semi-final. Also in August, Dominic won the Polaroid US All-Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown, defeating Richard Hartman in the final. He also ran well at Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he qualified #9 at 5.36/271.73. But once again, Etchells stopped him in round one. A week later (September 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships. He qualified second, and in round one, his 5.87/217.77 took out Bobby Lagana. He lost to Freddie Neely in the semi-final. Dom also ran 280 at Epping on September 9 and 273.88. He won the IHRA Empire Nationals at Empire International Raceway in 1990.

Notes: Stock stroke motor. | Dale started the '80 season by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #8 with a 6.12/238.09, and another 6.12 won his first-round race over Jim Dunn. In round two, he beat Hank Johnson with a 6.21. In the semifinals, he beat Kenny Bernstein and moved into the final against Ron Colson, who was driving the "Hawaiian." Dale won his second NHRA National event with a 6.25/238.72 that beat Colson, who crossed the centerline. He survived until the semifinals at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.31/212.26 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.04/233. The "War Eagle" was voted "best-appearing car" at the NHRA Gatornationals, and Pulde proved that it could go too by qualifying #7. His 6.13/232.55 advanced in the first round when Gordie Bonin crossed the centerline. He picked up to 6.07/239.36 in round two to beat Paul Smith. He faced Prudhomme in the semifinals, but an oil leak developed on the line, and he had to shut off. The following week (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and Dale's 6.48 qualified #5. Once again, he ran well, beating low qualifier Smith in the first round and working his way to the final, where he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Dale had problems and shut down to an 11.52 while Beadle motored to the victory with a 6.06/237. It was pretty impressive that he at least made it into the semifinals at all these races. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Pulde had an interesting qualifying run. He started to go into a wheelstand, and instead of easing off the throttle, he just shifted it into high gear to get the front wheels back down onto the track. When he did that, the fire extinguisher came loose and cracked him in the forehead. So, on that pass, he qualified #4 with a 6.14, and to boot, he got a nice-sized bump on his forehead. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced Shirl Greer, and both of them went up in smoke, but Pulde's back-peddling 6.35/221 beat Greer's 6.90/181. In the semifinals, he and opponent Billy Meyer went up in tire smoke again, but once again, Pulde came out on top. In the final, he faced Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. Unfortunately, the "War Eagle" busted a rear end, and Tripp made an easy pass for the victory. Things didn't go as well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his best of 6.19/243.24 (Top Speed and a new track record) failed to qualify. He was at Maple Grove for the Jungle Jim Memorial race in May. It was a six-car show with all the cars making two passes each and the two lowest ET meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.27/229.00 in his first race to beat Gary Burgin's 6.43/229, and a slightly quicker 6.26/232.55 won his second race over Bruce Larson. His ET was good enough to transfer into the final, where he would face Roy Harris, who had run 6.13 for a final-round appearance. But Roy had trouble in the semifinal, blowing an engine and turning the car into a fireball. He and his crew did an amazing job swapping out the engine and getting the car ready for the final with Pulde. But the final saw Harris get out of shape and cross the centerline while Dale improved again with a 6.24/222.22 for the victory. He did not run at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals as it was rained out until May 25. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #2 with a 6.14/238.72, right behind Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" at 6.12. He beat Bernstein in the first round, but in round two, he got out of shape against Ed McCulloch and shut off. The mile-high air of Denver gave the team some problems in qualifying for the eight-car show at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Dale was one of many that failed to qualify. In July, the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde's 6.10 qualified #7. He beat John Collins in the opening round before being shut off on the line in round two with a fuel leak. A week later (July 20), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The team's performance was off here as they only qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show and, in the first round, lost to John Pott in the "Mr. Norm" car. On July 27, Pulde showed up at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.12. In the first round, he took an easy win over alternate Don Nieves, who was in for Tom McEwen. In the semifinals, his 6.37 beat Collins. This set up a final-round meeting with #2 qualifier Prudhomme. Prudhomme had the edge during eliminations running 6.2s. Sure enough, the "Snake" scored a 6.23 in the final to win. Things took a turn for the better up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The race was delayed for one week due to rain. Dale qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.20/225.56. He had a bit of luck in round one, where he got crossed up, got off the gas, and then hammered it again, went into a wheelstand, and yet still ran 6.25! This beat Frank Mancuso, who fouled anyway. In the semifinals, a 6.19/237.46 beat Tim Grose who overpowered the track. In the final, he faced Dale Armstrong. Dale was tough as he had set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.10, and he won his semifinal race with a 6.15. In the final, Pulde ran his best of the weekend, 6.16 at 237.46. This got the win, while Armstrong must have hopped it up a bit and went into heavy tire smoke before shutting down. Usually, Dale would have been at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, but the rain date for the Grandnationals conflicted with that. Pulde showed at New England for the NHRA Division 1 final on August 17. A 6.21/224.43 qualified #5 for the eight-car show. But this field was tough. In the first round, Pulde improved to 6.13/223.88, yet he lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.01/240. Dale's best NHRA ET was a first-round 6.022 at the Summernationals, and the best speed was the 243.24 at the Cajuns. He also went 6.044 in qualifying at Indy.

Notes: The first time out for this car in competition was at Lions on June 28. Gunter debuted the car with 9-second runs at 166. Warren was at OCIR on July 19 for the PDA Championships. His 8.54 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. His 8.68 lost to Mike Van Sant's 8.14 in the "Invader in the opening round." The following week, Gunter was at Irwindale for another sixteen car show. In the opening round, he had drivetrain problems and shut off against Danny Ongais. On August 2, Lions held an eight-car show with so many cars they formed two eight-car fields. Warren failed to qualify for the "quick" eight, but he was in the second program. Unfortunately, he blew a transmission in his first-round race against the "Mako Shark." Shortly after that (August 10), the "Durachrome Bug" was at Woodburn's Funny Car Festival. In the opening round, an off-pace 9.47/151.00 lost to Ken Smith's 8.61/174. He also lost in the first round at Irwindale's sixteen car show held on August 16. This time Gas Ronda's 7.54/194 stopped him. At the end of the month, he competed at the Drag News Nationals held at Lions. Gordon Mineo's 8.01/157 put the bug's 8.43/173.74 on the trailer in the first round. Irwindale held an eight-car show on September 1, and Gunter qualified on the "bump" with a 7.91. Tom Sturm's Corvair failed to fire for its opening race against Warren, so he soloed with a 9.36/109.33. In the semifinal, the car got crossed-up, and Gunter's 9.81/91.00 lost to Van Sant's 7.97/187. The photo is of the car at Lions just after getting sponsors. The Don Burns lettering was added to the space in front of the Durachrome name. This chassis was damaged at OCIR, and new chassis was built just before two full seasons on a USA national tour. The second car had darker shadowing along the body lines.

Notes: Waterman built Hemi. Billy ran 6.197 for Low ET and a National Record at Indy in '74 but ended up smoking the tires in a rain-delayed final and lost to the Snake in the ARMY 'Cuda. Ran 6.34 at Bristol, 6.44 at Englishtown, 6.44 at Ontario. | Billy Meyer was 19 in '74, and he had already been behind the wheel of a funny car for a few years. He had won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet at only 17 years of age! Before this new Mustang II was built, he had already been involved with four other Funny Car's. His new car was built by S&R and used a 118" chassis. The fiberglass Mustang II body came from J&E. Sid Waterman built the Hemi, which used a Moldex 1/2 stroker crank for a displacement of 484. M/T pistons held Venolia pistons. Crower was the choice for the camshaft. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and on top of the GMC 6/71 sat an Enderle fuel injection unit fed by a Hilborn pump. A Lenco transmission transferred the power back to a Ford rear with 3.90 gears. The car wasn't cheap to build as it cost Meyer $25,000. The August '74 issue of Drag Racing USA claimed that the car's best (at the time) was 6.35/231. Billy started the '74 season by qualifying #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.41. A first-round 6.48/211.26 advanced when Russell Long shut off early. In the second round, a 6.72/195.22 beat Gordon Mineo's 6.83/188. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line in the semifinals with an oil leak. Billy was at Englishtown in June for a best of three match race against Russell Long, who was driving one of "Jungle Jim" Liberman's Vegas. The two had a really close first race that saw Meyer's 6.86/195.65 beat Long's 6.87/174. Both lost traction in the second race, but Billy's 8.13/119.65 still came out on top over Russell's 8.36/181. Meyer had already won the match, but the two came out for a third run. The Mustang II ended up exploding a blower and slowing to 7.41/146.81 that lost to Long's 7.05/152. Shortly after that (June 16), he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.49 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, his 6.55/200.89 beat Bob Lagana's 6.90/191. He really picked it up in round two, where his 6.37/218.97 defeated Ron Colson's 6.53/218 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Shirl Greer blew his engine and caught fire in the semifinal, so Billy's 6.56/213.27 advanced easily. He went up against the "Black Magic" Vega of Al Segrini in the final. Their best times in eliminations were so close as Al had run a 6.38 best compared to Meyer's 6.37. It was going to be anyone's race. Meyer rose to the occasion, running Low ET at 6.34/223.88 to win over Segrini's 6.43/228. Another match race was run at West Salem, where he lost the match to Denny Savage driving the "Hawaiian." He also reached the final of IHRA's next national event, the Northern Nationals held at Mid America Dragway at the end of June. The final was kind of embarrassing for Meyer as he had to shut off on the line due to one of his headers falling off. Colson soloed for the victory. During the month, he had also driven the "Keeling and Clayton" car at several events. On July 3, he competed at the Funny Car Spectacular at Englishtown. He set Low ET in his first-round race, where he ran 6.50/202.70 to beat Roy Harris' 6.93/210 in "Jungle Jim" Liberman's second car. Unfortunately, the car broke on the burnout in the semifinal against eventual winner Raymond Beadle. He suffered three straight losses to Colson at Bluegrass Dragway. His best time for their match was only 7.12, while the "Chi-Town" car ran in the 6.7's and set track records. Many people had Meyer on their radar for the NHRA Summernationals, as when his car was right, he was tough to beat. A 6.55 qualified #7, and he improved to 6.44/210.77 in the opening round to beat an out-of-shape Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse." But he was disappointed in the second round, where he smoked the tires at 7.48 in a loss to eventual winner Segrini's 6.60. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 6.78/191.08 qualified #7 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round against Kosty Ivanof and shut off to a 10.14/67.77. Billy did not run high speeds ever on the NHRA tour. His 6.287/223.32 low qualifier at Indy was his fastest. The 6.197 was at only 218.44 on race day. Where did he run the cited 231?

Notes: Ed qualified #7 with a 6.517/218.97 at the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.52/220.58 beat Sush Matsubara at 7.10/198, but a second-round 6.63/203.61 lost to Frank Hall's 6.39/217. He got a big win at Bakersfield on March 3 when final-round opponent Twig Zeigler broke. Still, Ed hustled to a 6.44/223.32 for the win. He had earlier set Top Speed at 226.70. Ed found himself in another final on March 17 at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Ed set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.38 over Gene Snow. He fell off to a 6.91/186 in the final that lost to Tom McEwen's strong 6.41/212. He was runner-up again on April 6 at the OCIR AHRA Grand American. Ed ran 6.62/221.67 over Danny Ongais' 6.68/220, 6.70/221.67 over Don Prudhomme, and a 6.59/223.88 solo when Bob Pickett broke on the line in the semifinal. In the final, he lost to Jim Dunn's 6.66/220. He then stopped at Irwindale for the big 30 car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. In the opening round, he beat Gerry Glenn with a 6.64/203.61 but had problems in round two and shut off to 7.47 in a loss to Dunn's 6.37. McCulloch always ran well at Seattle, and in May, it was no exception for the fifth annual Northwest Open. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show, meaning he had to run low qualifier Prudhomme in the first round. Ed won, running a 6.47/213.27, while Don crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.37/225 over Ken Goodell's 6.43/218. Somehow Prudhomme had gotten reinstated and had made it to the final to face Ed again. This time, McCulloch got out of shape (15.27) and settled for runner-up again. At the AHRA Springnationals held at Spokane, McCulloch qualified #6 and beat Mike Miller in the first round, before losing to Danny Ongais in round two. In June, a 6.453/227.27 (Top Speed) qualified #4 at the NHRA Springnationals, but a sleepy first-round 6.847/214.79 lost to Paul Smith's 7.00/214. The Rockford Manufacturer's Meet at Byron Dragway was Ed's next stop. All cars were to run three races, and Ed won his first with a 6.63/218.97. In his second race, his 6.64/217.91 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.44/223 in Don Schumacher's car, and in his final race, he lost a motor, giving Cliff Brown an easy win. In July, he finished runner-up to Gene Snow at the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City when he fouled away a 6.51 in the final. Ed qualified #5 in the field with a 6.60/211.76 and beat low qualifier Shirl Greer in the second round with a 6.53/222.77 over Shirl's quicker 6.50. In the semifinals, a 6.57 dropped Dale Creasy. Another runner-up finish came the following week (July 13) at Capitol Raceway's King of Kings Funny Car race. Ed was not running up to par as he beat Russell Long with a 7.01/171.39 and an 8.17/135 beat Beadle's tire-smoker in the semifinals. In the final, he did pick up to 6.94/226.19, but it was still second best to Al Segrini's 6.65/210. The next day he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.375/229.00 qualified #3. In the first round, the car went into a wheelstand and lost to eventual winner Segrini at 6.60/197. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for their All-American Series race. In the opening round, he beat Tom Prock's 6.63/204 with a 6.45/205.94. Ed set Low ET in the second round with a 6.40/222.22 over Jim Liberman. In the semifinals, he broke a brake caliper and could not stage against Kosty Ivanof. The Super Stock Magazine Nationals was held at York US 30 near the end of July, and it featured two Funny Car fields. One was called the Independents, and the other was the NHRA class cars. Ed raced in the NHRA class as both were eight-car shows. He opened with a 6.93/221.67 to beat Jimmy Boyd, while a semifinal 7.31 advanced when Bill Leavitt fouled. He ran the "Frantic Ford" driven by Dodger Glenn in the final, and his 6.69/209.30 took the victory over Glenn's troubled 7.53/154. Back to Seattle in August, he set Low ET at a track record 6.27 and had Top Speed at 231, and won the Seafair 64 car show over Jerry Ruth. He was favored to win at the Irwindale Grand Prix race. There he set Low ET with a 6.38 at 219.51 in beating Dave Condit, but in the semifinals, he was surprised by Mike Halloran, whose 6.50/220 outran his 6.59/206.89. The next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. McCulloch qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals, where he went up in smoke against Prudhomme. Then came the "big one," the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. Ed's 6.375/227.27 qualified #5, and an even better 6.319/210.77 beat Dunn's 7.09/138 in the first round. But in round two, he got out of shape and shut off against Billy Meyer, who was long gone, setting Low ET with a 6.19/218. He then got another runner-up finish at the AHRA Grandnationals, where Prudhomme beat him in the final. Ed qualified #5 at the Ontario World Finals with a 6.365/226.13. He beat Gordie Bonin in round one, 6.428/216.34 to 6.55/226, and beat Mike Miller in round two, 6.315/220.58 to 6.86/200. Ed kept rolling in the semis, taking out Jim Dunn, 6.384/209.79 to 7.04/144. However, in the final, Dave Condit got the win in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang, 6.24/212, to Ed's consistent 6.338/225.56. Notes: Tripp ran as team car "blocker" for Meyer's title points chase in final two NHRA events. Tripp qualified #7 at Fremont at 6.036/240.64, but rocketed to a 5.940/250.00 to beat a fouling Dale Pulde in round one, (5.99/233). Trip lost to Frank Hawley in round two, 5.89/239 to 6.048/241.93. Tripp qualified #5 at the World Finals at 5.975/229.59. In round one, he unloaded a 5.834/232.55 to take out Tim Grose at 6.67/157. In round two, he beat Don Prudhomme, 6.487/231.95 to 16.28/36. He beat Frank Hawley in the semis, 6.039/226.69 to 6.18/218, while team owner Billy Meyer was losing to Kenny Bernstein. In the final Tripp sealed the deal with a 5.864/243.24 win over Bernstein at 6.23/223. He was let go after winning the World Finals. The Fremont 250.00 was the fourth entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car (Meyer himself owned the second entry).

Notes: John started the '86 season with last year's Corvette, but he started running the Cavalier by the Gatornationals in March. In its first NHRA National event, John qualified the car #5, and in round one, a 5.81/247.38 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/209. In round two, John's 5.91/212.56 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.66/256. He won the Coor's 32-car Funny Car show at Firebird in April. He ran 5.92/237.46 over Billy Meyer and a Low ET shot of 5.71/252.10 to beat John Martin. In the final, a 5.76/243.90 won over Johnny West's 5.96/249 in the "Hawaiian." On April 20, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.75/252.95 qualified #4. He beat Martin in the first round before getting out of shape in round two and crossing the centerline. He took another win when he won the Bakersfield May meet. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76/243.90. A first-round 5.80/245.90 beat West's 5.84; in the semifinals, another 5.76/245.90 beat Meyer's 5.78/253. In the final, he ran Martin. Force took the victory with a 5.92/251.39 over Martin's 6.01/229. The next NHRA race on the schedule was the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge's State Capitol Raceway. John set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.66/258.17. A first-round 6.07/237.96 beat John Lombardo's 6.32/244 in the "Blue Max." But in round two, Force again crossed the centerline, giving Mark Oswald the win. Photo from Indy 1986. Listed MPH from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. John's best NHRA National event times in the Cavalier were 5.647/258.17 at Englishtown and Baton Rouge. Where did John run 264 mph?

Notes: Larson had his best season ever in '89. He and crew chief Maynard Yingst jelled, and he went on to win the NHRA Funny Car World Championship by winning six events in eleven final round showings. He started the year by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.62. He improved to a 5.32/259.81 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.50/263. Another 5.32 at 256.41 beat John Martin in round two, while in the semifinals, Bruce eased to a 12.89/54.76 to advance when Jim White broke in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he grabbed his first victory of the year with a 5.63/231.24 over Kenny Bernstein. To show it was no fluke, they then went to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.30/275.06 qualified #5. He beat White in the first round, and in round two, he reset the NHRA ET record to 5.27 while beating a tire-smoking Prudhomme. (The "Snake" had set Low ET at 5.19 in qualifying but failed to back it up for a record). Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals, and Larson was in his second final of the new year. Unfortunately, he blew a head gasket in the final, and his 5.58/207.32 finished runner-up to Scott Kalitta's 5.57/264. He was in another final at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.33/276.07 qualified #2, and in round one, he advanced with a 5.40 when Tom Hoover fouled. His 5.33/273 put Bernstein on the trailer in round two, while a great 5.31/275.48 took out Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. Things were looking good for another victory when he faced Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had been having a hard time getting his Larry Minor-owned Cutlass down the track. The "Ace's" last two runs were 6.47 and 9.76 in the semis, so Larson was the favorite. Unfortunately, Bruce crossed the centerline on a 5.67 run in the final, and Ed's 19.70 got the victory. Still, three finals in three NHRA races was nothing to laugh at. They were tough. The fourth NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Larson qualified #1 with a 5.38/266.82. He beat Oswald in round one, but lost to Mike Dunn in the second round. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, they qualified well with a 5.35/268.69 for the #3 spot, but in round one, Larson smoked the tires and lost to Tony McCallum. The team continued their short dry spell at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bruce qualified #5 with a 5.55/268.73, but he only made it as far as round two, where his 5.50 lost to Prudhomme's 5.44. They rebounded from their slump at the NHRA Springnationals. There, Larson qualified #2 with a 5.30/271.32. He reset the NHRA ET record in the first round, with a 5.25 at 271.32 to beat Art Hendey. In round two, he set the track speed record with a 5.35/276.75 over a tire-smoking Johnny West, and in the semifinal, Etchells also smoked the tires against him, and his 5.33/270.27 moved him into the final against Hoover. In the final, Tom had problems and slowed to 6.79/135 while Bruce motored to his second win of the season with a 5.52/275.31. It was a dominant performance. The NHRA teams then headed to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Larson again qualified well, running 5.52/269.38 for the #3 spot. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.49/265.72 to beat White, but the Cutlass broke in round two against Prudhomme, giving the "Snake" a solo into the semifinals. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.39 qualified #6 for the show. He beat R.C. Sherman in round one, but his quicker 5.50 in round two lost to a quick-leaving McCulloch at 5.56. Maynard tuned the car to a 5.55/251.53 in Denver's thin air for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bruce beat Kalitta in the first round, and White in the second with a 5.65/248. His 5.54/249 in the semifinals beat McCulloch and Bruce found himself in his fifth final round of the year. He made the best of it, running a 5.66/255.97 to beat Oswald's quicker 5.62/255. At the end of July, the NHRA tour was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. Larson qualified #6 at 5.42/276.07. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Another win came at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.31/277.00. On his way to the final, he ran 5.31/271.98, 5.35/270.10, and 5.37/271.57 to beat Kalitta, Densham, and White in that order. In the final, he faced Bernstein, and once again, Larson used his reflexes to get the victory; his 5.40/271.08 beat Kenny's 5.37/273. 1989 World Champ. Photo from Columbus 1989. Great 5.247/274.72 at 1989 Chiefs was the quickest side-by-side pass (Mark Oswald, 5.232/281.60). Ran 5.282/276.92 at Indy 1989.

Notes: In April, Kosty was at Epping, New England, for a best of three match race against Tom Prock, driving the "Custom Body" car. He won all three races with times of 6.39/218.44, 6.38/207.37, and 6.70/185.56, as Prock could do no better than 6.68 on this day. He was at Englishtown for its Spring Funny Car Bonanza race, but he blew his engine on an 8.50/119.36 run in the first round. He won the race as Al Bergler had broken on the line, but he could not show for his semifinal race against eventual winner Tommy Ivo. He raced at Maple Grove for the Duitch Classic but got out of shape in the first round and shut off against Pee Wee Wallace. Kosty won the Gold Cup Championships race held at Empire Dragway in August. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.74/191.90 beat Bruce Larson's 6.93/203. Another 6.74 at 195.22 in the semifinal defeated George Johnson's 6.82/204. He stepped it up in the final, setting Low ET at 6.54/191.08 while beating Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford."

Notes: Burgin started the '81 season at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.53/223 lost to Ed Moore's 6.37/225. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.237/236.22. He faced Mike Dunn in round one, and lost a 6.21/236.22 to 6.47/229.59 decision. Gary qualified #15 at Gainesville with a 6.111/239.36, but he hit the guardrail in qualifying and could not return. His next event was the Summernationals, where he qualified #7 at 6.037/244.56. But he shut off an 11-second pass in round one, that sent Dale Pulde on a 6.14/234 ride to round two. Gary was the third alternate at Sanair (times not available), but he qualified #6 at Indy with a 5.982/234.37. However, first-round blues struck again, and Fuzz Miller advanced at 6.58/201 when Gary slowed to a 7.79/108. Gary qualified #9 at Fremont with a 6.074/234.98. He got past Dale Pulde in round one, 6.09/229.59 to 6.34/229. Gary then beat Al Segrini in round two, 6.15/232.55 to 6.24/225. And he won a great match over Ray Beadle in the semis, 6.22/234.37 to 6.23/230. He faced Mike Dunn in the finals, but despite a great .514 to .547 holeshot, the Hawaiian car passed him at the top end, taking a 6.11/236 to 6.16/230.76 victory (.017 seconds - about 5 feet). Gary qualified #3 at Orange County for the FInals, running 6.005/237.46. He beat Jim Moore in round one, 6.041/230.76 to 6.46/187, and got around Rob Williams in round two, 6.063/241.28 to a shutoff. Burgin then beat a broken Dale Armstrong in the semis with a 6.054/234.98. He faced Jim Dunn in the final. Dunn stayed consistent while Gary fell off and took his second runner-up of the season, 6.10/235 to 8.67/105. | Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore

Notes: Billy had a strong year in '84. He won three races in NHRA and another three in IHRA and finished second to Mark Oswald in the NHRA Funny Car points chase. He also ended the season with the second quickest Funny Car time ever, a 5.628 at the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol. In January, Billy started the season by qualifying for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway with a 5.96/225.00. He beat John Martin in the first round with a 6.02/200.89, but he broke an oil line and advanced Tom McEwen in the semifinals. As good as he ran in NHRA, he started the year by failing to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.07/234.98. A new Plueger-built Mustang debuted in March, and it qualified #3 at Atlanta's eight-car field on March 11 with a 5.94/232.55. His 5.93/228.42 advanced when Al Hofmann broke in the opening round. In the semifinal, he and Kenny Bernstein had a great race that saw Meyer's 5.81 (Low ET) at 248.61 defeat Bernstein's 5.87/252. He faced Gary Southern in Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the final, and Gary went up in smoke while Meyer ran 6.02/223.88 for the victory. He qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.93/243.90. A first-round 5.85 beat Frank Hawley's 5.91 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In round two, a 6.17/226.70 got around Al Segrini, but in the semifinals, both he and John Collins smoked the tires, and John's 6.45/216 beat Meyer's 6.44/239. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.90 qualified #4. His 5.92/221.81 beat Ron Correnti in the opening round, while a 6.14 advanced in round two. In the semifinals, his 5.88 lost to McEwen's 5.89. Then things began to click, starting with the NHRA Southern Nationals. He won four straight races (two NHRA and two IHRA) and averaged 5.83 for 19 runs in those events. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.78/249.30 and went on to win over Kenny Bernstein in the final with a track record 5.73/252.80 over Bernstein's 5.80/254. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) and beat Oswald in the final for the $31,000 purse. The next win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In the first round, Billy qualified #8 in the eight-car show but beat a tire-smoking Bernstein with a 5.94/250. In the semifinals, he soloed to a track record 5.81/246 when Dale Pulde could not appear. He took his third win in the final with a 5.92/249.30 over Jim Head's 6.01/245. The crown jewel of this four-race winning stretch came next, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 3. He beat low qualifier, Don Prudhomme, in the first round and then Sherm Gunn in round two with a 5.86/236.84. And in the semifinals, a 5.81/243.24 beat Denny Savage. In the final, he faced Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird and won with a 5.776/252.10 over Mark's 5.97/251. The win was worth a record $41,500. In comparison, the two NHRA wins were worth slightly over $10,000 each. His good run ended the following week (June 10) at the NHRA Springnationals. Although he qualified #1 with a track record 5.81 at 249.30, he lost in the first round, with an off-pace of 6.27/207.31 that lost to John Force's 6.06/242. He made another $10,000 at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified #2 with a 5.84/250.69 and beat Ed McCulloch in the final with a 5.85/247.25. At the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 8, he ran horribly; his 6.49/157 qualified last in the sixteen-car field, and a tire-smoking shut-off 10.09/71 lost to McEwen's 5.88/245 in the opening round. A week later, he did make the finals at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.88 qualified #12, and he burned several bearings on his 5.85/240 in the first round that beat McCulloch's quicker 5.82/252. The team installed a new engine for round two, where his 5.88 beat Mike Dunn's 6.15. In the semifinal, his 5.79 took out Hawley's 5.85. In the final, he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," and his 5.97/248.61 lost to Beadle's 5.95/247. He lost early at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, and the week after that, he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Meyer qualified #1 and lasted until the second round before losing to Oswald. Billy ran a confirmed 254.95 at the NHRA World Finals. We assume the 255.68 is an IHRA time. It seems legit, but we need confirmation. Photo from Indy 1984.
