Notes: Third Woody Gilmore car. Photo taken at the 1973 NHRA U.S. Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 6.47 at 221 for this car in 1973. | We ran back to back 6.30s at 235 at Englishtown 73, match racing Jungle Jim. This was just the 426 Ramchargers motor, not the 475 inch Ed Pink stroker. We could not make that bigger motor run as well as the smaller Rams motor, although the Snake, Ray Beadle, Pat Foster, and others had luck with it. We had two Ed Pink motors, but ran a tenth and a half slower than the 426. We ran high 6.30s at NY National. We ran 6.39 at Detroit. Then the Ramchargers came out and ran 6.38 to get the track record back. Then we came out and ran 6.36 to take it back again. I stopped racing at the end of 1973. I had developed some ulcer problems and that ended my deal. Too much living out a suitcase and not eating right, etc. Had a chance to race for Mazmanian a year later when Danny Ongais went Indycar racing, but was having too much fun with my young son and stayed out. Ended up driving display rigs for Mr. Gasket and Bob Glidden, but that was as close as I got to the action again. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6-08-15

Notes: First paint of 73. Qualified in a field of Top Fuel cars at OCIR on 5/12/73 with a 6.72. Moved to Fresno in 74? Ran a 6.40 runner up at Indy U.S. Nationals on 9/73 Ran 6.37 at Portland. | After his tremendous '72 season, McCulloch hoped for more success for '73. It wasn't to be. '73 was good for him, but it was hard to top such a winning season as he had the year before. Ed started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran well but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona, he barely made the show, qualifying on the "bump" spot. The track was not good and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the "Hawaiian" in the first round with a 7.25-204. But in the second round, his 7.82-136 lost to Jim Murphy's 7.35-176. He did not qualify well at the Bakersfield March Meet either (#10), but he advanced past round one when Bill Leavitt fouled against him. A 7.48 in round two beat Gerry Glenn in John Lombardo's car and in the semifinals, his 7.42 beat Mike Van Sant in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. He was the underdog in the final against Tom Hoover who had run 7.15 and 7.17 in the last two rounds and sure enough, Tom's 7.14-218 in the final gave Ed the runner-up spot with a 7.57-196. Times were more "normal" at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran 6.46-219.51 to qualify #3 and he beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round. Gene Snow shut off against him in round two and McCulloch advanced with a 6.63 but he hurt his motor while winning. He ran out of time to repair for his semifinal race so Don Schumacher soloed into the final.Ed then won a sixteen car show at Miami near the end of March. He qualified #2 with a 6.76 and in the final he beat Al Marshall driving Dale Creasy's Mustang. Another win came in early April at Seattle's Northwest Open. He qualified first, set both ends of the track record, and went on to beat Kenney Goodell in the final. On April 21, McCulloch was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola FC Championships. It was a 32 car field and Ed set low ET in round two with a 6.56. In the third round his 6.81-211 lost to Danny Ongais' 6.73-218 in the "Vel's Parnelli Jones" Cuda. Seattle held its first FC event in April, and Ed set low ET and top speed at 6.52-218 but in the final he was a little slow off the line and his 6.56-218 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.58-217. As noted, at OCIR's Constructor's Championships, Ed was the only FC to qualify in a field of dragsters. His 6.72 qualified #23 in the 32 car show. He lost to John Stewart in the first round.

Notes: Low qualifier at Sonoma 1993 (setting a new track record). | Mineo, 61, and four others, including three members of his family, died in September 2006 as the result of a high-speed boating accident on a Texas lake. News accounts reported Mineo's craft collided with another boat during a 100-mph poker run. -- RT | Photo from Ennis 93. -- RO | Mineo started the '93 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.88-187.57 was only good enough for the second alternate spot. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, he qualified #14 with a 5.55-253.95. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round with an off-pace 6.14-163.01. He broke in round two, giving Jim Epler a free ride into the semifinals. Gordon qualified #6 at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.20-257.06. A troubled 6.14-166.29 beat an equally troubled Gary Densham at 7.40-104 in round one, but in round two he lost a motor against Brent Fanning and the resulting fire destroyed the Firebird body. He was OK. He had a new body installed in time for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.28-282.04 qualified #7. In the first round, Paul Smith fouled against him and Mineo advanced with a 5.68-222.99. He lost to Freddie Neely in round two.

Notes: This was one of the original four Mercury Comets built by the Logghe Brothers. Nicholson, Chrisman and Kenz & Leslie got the other three. Injected 427 SOHC, C-6 automatic combo. Set both ends of the S/XS national record at 8.61 and 172.72 mph at Tulsa World Finals and bettered that by better than three-tenths at Indy. -- DW | The 1966 NHRA Nationals at Indy were the first to feature dedicated classes for funny cars: S/XS, A/XS, B/XS. Supercharged Experimental Stock was where the blown cars and class-dominating (but normally aspirated) Logghe Comets went to play. Schartman and his yellow RSE Merc clinched the S/XS trophy with an 8.28-174.41 blast. Since the NHRA had not yet established a formal Funny Car Eliminator, the class runs for S/XS were the closest thing the fans were going to get. -- RT | Listed in FUELFC due to its lightweight, flip top configuration despite being injected. | Ed started the year at Fremont on Jan 7 for a best of three match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman and his Nova. Ed won the match three straight with runs of 8.35-176.81,8.37-176.81 and a 8.14. Jim's best was 8.61. He was runner-up to teammate Don Nicholson at the AHRA Winternationals. He had beaten Arnie Beswick in the first round with a 8.55 and in the semifinals his 8.65-164.83 beat Roger Wolford. But in the final, despite running his best time of the event at 8.48-169.49, he lost to "Dyno's" low ET of the meet run of 8.26 at 171. The following week (Feb 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He ran in the S/XS class and he ran low ET for the class in the first round with a 8.33 at 173.41 to beat Bobby Woods. Unfortunately, he was unable to make the second round. He won the Irwindale Factory Showdown beating Fred Goeske's "Hemi-Cuda" in the final and setting low ET of the meet with a 8.21. On March 5 he faced Hubert Platt's SOHC powered Mustang for a best of three match at Lakeland. Platt won the first race with a 9.59-159 over Eddie's off-pace 9.72-151.77 but the Comet came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 8.61-168.85.

Notes: Ran incredible 5.74 to win at OCIR that year. Photo from 1983 U.S. Nationals. Tripp started the '82 season at Pomona driving for Joe Pisano. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.20-244.56. It was unlucky because by qualifying in that spot you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Shumake ran low qualifier Tom Anderson, and sure enough, Tom's 5.96-242 put the Camaro's 6.15-245.90 on the trailer.

Notes: Don started the '83 season by qualifying first at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. Traction there was terrible as his 6.80 in qualifying held for low ET of the meet. He went on to win by beating Tom Hoover in the first round with a 7.32-229 (top speed), and in the semifinals he beat Tom McEwen. That put him into the final against Gary Burgin. Gary had problems and shut off while Prudhomme took the win with a 7.00. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.09-227.84. A first round 6.33-207.37 took out Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang but in the second round, the "Snake" had to shut off against Frank Hawley due to severe tire shake. Don qualified #6 with a 5.92-233.16 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but an off-pace 6.19-209.78 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.04-239 in the first round. Photo from Martin, Mich., 1983. Car was sold from Prudhomme to Dennis Lockaby to Monty Todd.

Notes: Billy Meyer downed Raymond Beadle in the final at the Golden Gate Nationals, 5.75 to 5.78, in what was then the quickest side-by-side Funny Car race of all time. Meyer finished second to Frank Hawley in the 1982 points battle but had slumped badly in 1983, winning just one round of competition heading into the Baylands event. Meyer was not even ranked in the top 10, but after qualifying sixth with a 5.90, his Chief Auto Parts, 7-Eleven Pontiac came to life with a 5.84 in the semis and a 5.75 in the final against low qualifier Beadle. - NHRA | Meyer started the '83 season by qualifying #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.28-231.95. He smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to a 11.52 that lost to Gary Burgin's 5.94. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.05-225.00 but once again he went out early. In the first round his 6.22-184.04 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.87-247 in the "Hawaiian." Meyer qualified on the "bump spot" for the eight car show at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.56-220 just made the field but he lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round. Atlanta held an eight car show in March and Billy was there. A 6.42 qualified #4 but he lost early. He was back at Atlanta on April 17 for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he failed to qualify for the eight car field with a 6.03-240.64 best. The following week he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Rain postponed the race until May 1. He qualified #6 (another eight car show) with a 6.11 but he failed to make the finals. By this time, Meyer must have been wondering what was going on, as he had run so well in '82. But NHRA had made a rule change for '83, outlawing the use of Nitrous Oxide. Billy had been using it in '82.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42-268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round and beat him with a 5.39-260.11 to Force's 5.46-275. In the second round be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43-264.23 and once again met Force in the first round. Again Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60-150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45-264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49-244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid South Nationals where a 5.36-264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round after qualifying #11 with a 5.57-263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44-252.66 setting up a first round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67-183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55-242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42-275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79-135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54-256.77 qualified #5 and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round with a 5.57-251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47-270 beat Tom's 5.68-211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5 and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76-248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round be beat Gary Ritter but in round two he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47-256.70. But once again McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47-273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66-261.55 and in the first round he improved to a 5.54-265.48 but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49-261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55-259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In the first round he improved to a 5.42-238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80-111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (Sept 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA U.S. Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight car show with a 5.54-265.01 but in the first round he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41-253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Ran 5.023 at the Winston Invitational in Rockingham. Best standard National Event time was 5.068 at Englishtown. Hofmann was the second Funny Car driver to exceed 300 mph. He recorded a run of 301.10 mph Feb, 19, 1994, in Phoenix to become the 13th member -- and only one of two Funny Car drivers -- of the Slick 50 300-mph Club. - NHRA | Al started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.12-289.85 and worked his way to the final by beating Gary Clapshaw in round one with a 5.35-277.17, and a 5.14-288.09 in round two beat Gary Bolger. In the semifinals, he ran 5.11-278.72 over Dean Skuza's 5.25-283. This put him in the final against Cruz Pedregon. The two had a real close race as both ran 5.12 (Al at 285.08), but Cruz got the victory. The next race was the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona. Hofmann became the second F/C driver to reach 300 mph when he ran 5.09-301.10 to qualify #2. Unfortunately, he slowed to an off-pace 5.59-206.99 in the first round and lost to Del Worsham's 5.22-289.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI 1985. Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79-250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73-252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76-253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semi finals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91-254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off 25.41-31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93-253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70-250.83. A first round 5.75-250.69 beat Oswald but while running Pulde in the second round he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified first with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254 but against Scott Kalitta in the first round he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79-254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round against him and McCulloch's 5.82-255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semi finals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81-247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69-252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90-244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77-253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88-233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79 251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75-254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94-249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lated until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89-244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87-243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02-248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98-246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93-245 beat Ron Correnti putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93-248.48 for the victory. Things reverted bad to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen car show with a 5.98 but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95-234.13 but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83-251.53 and lost early.
