Notes: On Oct 11, OCIR held an FC Open and after driving Tom Sturm's Corvair for most of the year, Bob showed up behind the wheel of this car. A blown trans in the first round gave Frank Pisano a single... The following weekend (Oct 18) was much better. At Lions for a Coca Cola Cavalcade event, Bob ran a first round 7.41-183.67 over Fred Goeske's 7.84, a second round 7.28-196.07 (top speed of meet) over Ken Safford's 7.95 in the Stone, Woods and Cook Mustang and in the final he set low ET at 7.26-193.13 but he had fouled it away and Kelly Chadwick took the win with an 8.06-138.46... At the Lion's East/West meet on Oct 25, Bob ran a first round 7.29-200.44 but still lost to Pat Minick's 7.24-199.55.

Notes: This was Doug Thorley's new 1968 Corvair, Logghe Chassis, Fiberglass Trends one-piece fliptop Corvair body, Al Bergler aluminum. I think Watson paint, Kelly lettering. This car replaced Doug's '67 Indy winner. Dick Bourgeois and Earl Wade took the car on tour during the summer of '68. On a Sunday night at Motor City Dragway, Dick ran a 7.57 for low e.t. over Lew Arrington's Brutus, Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda and Don Gay in his rainbow Firebird. In '69 the Corvair body was replaced with a Javelin body but continued with the blown 490 Chevy and ran the Coke tour. | On July 14, at Connecticut Dick, set a 7.81 track record. - Ron Howard

Notes: Fiberglass Trends body & paint. This car was run in 1969. The 1970 version was all red and didn't carry the Javelin 2 name. Confirmed 7.77 at US 30. | Dick raced Don Schumacher at Aquasco for a best two out of three match race on April 13. Dick fouled away an 8.17-182.18 in the first race but came back with a 7.99-181.44 to beat Don's 8.19-185 in the second race. In the tiebreaker, the Javelin broke and Don singled to a 7.95-188 for the match race win. At the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Amarillo on April 27, Bourgeois' 8.36 beat Jess Tyree who lost a transmission. Fred Goeske ran the track's first seven (7.91) in the second race and poor Dick was in the other lane at the time and lost. At another Cavalcade race on June 15 at Epping, a holeshot 8.21-187 beat Tyree's quicker 8.08-176. In his second race, a 7.73-179 beat Goeske's 8.56-175. Unfortunately, he broke a rear end in his third race and lost to Ken Safford. National Trail held a Cavalcade race on August 17. Bourgeois' singled with an 8.17 in the first race when Kelly Chadwick broke a driveshaft. In the second race, a 7.75-189.46 beat an ailing, Stone-Woods-Cooke Mustang driven by Ken Safford at 8.93. In the third race, Gary Dyer's 7.83-194 beat his fouling 8.16-186.32. Dick ran a 7.47-196.93 to qualify ninth at the US Nationals on Sept 8. He improved to a 7.45 in the first round, but that was no match for Leonard Hughes' 7.28. On Sept 14 he raced a four car round robin race at National Trail. In his first race, Jim Liberman's holeshot 7.89-186 beat his quicker 7.85-189.86. He shut off on the line with no oil pressure for his second race, and a 7.63-191.88 lost to Gary Dyer's 7.46-195 in the third race. He raced at the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lion's on Oct 18, but he had engine problems and lost fire in the first round. At the Fremont Fallnationals the next day (Oct 19), he qualified first with low et of the meet, a 7.48. A first round 7.89-191.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.68-193 in the first round. On Nov 1 he qualified first again at an eight car show at Irwindale. A 7.53-193.54 gave him the top spot. In the first round, he set low et of the meet with a 7.49-191.48 over Frank Pisano's 7.89-179.28. He lucked out in the semi-final when his Javelin lost fire on the line against Ed Lenarth. Lenarth did his burnout and his left rear wheel came out the car causing him to swerve and hit the guardrail. While all this was going on, Dick refired and ran a 7.98-172.92 to advance to the final. In the final he met another Javelin, that of Rusty Dellings. Dick went on to run a 7.97-192.30 for the victory over Delling's 8.09-185. He qualified fifth (7.65) for the Wacky FC team at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet.

Notes: Ronda had an amazing late 1969 season. He won the 1969 Manufacturer's Meet, the Irwindale East-West Championships, and the Sears Point North-South event. Performance info from Drag Stat 1969. | Ronda debuted his new Mustang on April 26 at Irwindale for a sixteen car show. He ran a 7.98 in qualifying and a first round 8.12-187.50 beat Leroy Hales. He lost to Clyde Morgan in the second round, but it was a good first showing for the new car. On May 3 he went to OCIR for their second annual Manufacturer's FC Open. He qualified fourth with an 8.06-177.51 in the four-car Ford team and in the first round beat Dale Armstrong with an 8.29-176.12. An 8.20-181.08 lost to Gordon Mineo's 7.99-185 in his second race. Back at Irwindale for an eight car show on May 17 he lost in the first round to low qualifier (7.67) Dave Beebe who ran low et and top speed of the meet against him in round one. A 7.62-200.00 beat Ronda's 8.21-185.18. He did much better at Fremont in May, stopping Danny Ongais in the final and setting top speed of the meet at 192.30. On May 30 at Irwindale for an eight car show, he got one back from Dave Beebe by running a first round 7.81-185.18 over the Dodge Fever car. He lost to Ron Leslie in the Kenz and Leslie Cougar in the semis. At the NHRA Winternationals on June 15, he qualified #11 with an 8.13-189.07 but Tom McEwen's 7.63-185 dropped Ronda's ailing Mustang. At Irwindale's Fourth of July Race he qualified #5 with a 7.98 but lost early. The next day (July 5) he went to OCIR for their Nitro Championships which had a sixteen car field. Ronda qualified #7 with a 7.93 and a first round 8.07-186.33 beat Leroy Hales in the New Breed at 8.58-184. Ongais' 7.49-191 beat his 7.84-195.22 in the second round. On July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Meet, Ronda's 7.82 qualified #5 in the sixteen car field and he beat Ed Lenarth (8.15) in the first round with a 7.92. Beebe unloaded a 7.38 low et of the meet on Gas who shut off to an 8.93 in round two. A win came at the Irwindale FC Open on July 26. He ran a first round 7.50-197.80 (top speed of the meet) over Mineo's 8.46-186. In the semi-final, a 7.76-193.12 beat the usually unbeatable Ongais who had handling problems. In the final a 7.78-191.88 beat Mike Snively for the title. He was runner-up at an eight car show on Aug 10 at Woodburn's FC Festival. He advanced past the first round when Ken Goodell's 'Cuda lost a rear end. In the semi-final, his 8.06 (low et of the meet) beat Ken Martin's Corvette. Steve Bovan beat Ronda in the final. One week later on Aug 16 at Irwindale for a sixteen car show, he set low et in the first round with a 7.54-194.38 over Warren Gunters's VW. He advanced to the semi-final with a 7.61-195.64 when Johnny Wright fouled in the Hellfire Corvette. He shut down on the line in the semis with problems letting Gary Gabelich single into the final. On Sept 3 he and Charlie Allen staged a match race at Irwindale. In the best of three match, Allen lost a transmission in his first race against Ronda but still won when the Mustang broke. In the second round, Charlie ran an 8.19-161 to win when a transmission let go in Ronda's car giving the match to Allen in two straight wins. He won a race at Irwindale on Sept 21 over an eight car field by qualifying #1 with a 7.70 and winning his first round race over Ed Lenarth with a 7.72-193.54. In the semi's a 7.59-193.12 (low et of the meet) beat Frank Pisano and a final round 7.60-191.88 beat Bovan's Mister T Camaro. At OCIR on Oct 11 for the FC Open event, Ronda's 7.65-195.65 qualified #3, but he hurt his engine and chose not to race. On Oct 18 it was back to Irwindale for the East/West Championships. All sixteen cars ran the first round with the winners running for the title in bracket one while the cars that lost in the first race were grouped into bracket two. Ronda lost his first race to Terry Hedrick's holeshot 7.56-192 that beat his quicker 7.52-197.10. Now racing in bracket two he ran a second round 7.40-200.88 over Don Schumacher (7.83-183) and in the semi's he singled when Wright's Corvette broke. In the bracket two final his 7.44-202.24 beat Gene Snow's quicker 7.38-214. The following day (Oct 19) he went to Fremont for their Fallnationals but he lost a motor in the final round against Rich Siroonian. Then came the win on Nov 2 at Sears Point's North/South Championships where he beat Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian in the final. Gas didn't look very strong in qualifying on Nov 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's meet when a 10.34 was the best he could do. And the next day didn't look any brighter when an 8.64 lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.49-197 in his first race. In his second race, a 10.58 advanced when Norm Weekly fouled away a 7.96-181. But the car came to life in the third round setting low et at 7.26-200 over Pete Bagnard. In the final his 7.47-199.56 beat Pat Minick's 7.48-202.70 in the Chi-Town Hustler. This was Ronda's biggest win of '69. He showed up at Irwindale on Nov 23 for a 32 car show but had driveline problems and lost in the first round. All in all, it was a great year for Gas.

Notes: Beadle was running with Ford sponsorship for '82, which included a new EXP body on his car. He started the season by qualifying third at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.99-228.42. He ran as well as a 5.97-244.56 in his semi-final win over Frank Hawley's quicker 5.96-239. In the final, he met Al Segrini where his 6.32-226.13 fell to Al's 6.26-238.09. A 5.91-243.90 (top speed) qualified first at the Gatornationals but in the first round he met Segrini again and this time Beadle got out of shape and hit the guardrail. The car ended up flipping upside down and slid into the opposite guardrail before coming to a halt. He was ok but the EXP body was totaled. At the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, the team showed up with last year's Omni body and qualified first with a 6.02 (low et) but he failed to make the finals. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 25 where a 5.98-235.60 qualified third. A first round 5.88-238 beat Gary Burgin and a 5.93-240 beat Paul Smith in the semi-finals. In the final, he reset the NHRA record to a 5.87 with a speed of 243.24 to win the race over Hawley. On May 2 he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am where a track record 5.86 led qualifying. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round and lost to John Pott. He followed that race up with a win at the NHRA Cajun Nationals beating Don Prudhomme in the final with a 6.08-239.36 over Don's 6.13-247.25. He had qualified second with a 6.00. Another win came at the IHRA Springnationals where he set low et (6.00) and beat Billy Meyer in the final. He then ran at the NHRA Springnationals on June 13 where a 5.98-242.58 qualified third but in the first round he smoked all eight pistons and lost to Segrini. A week later at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Beadle set a 5.88 track record in qualifying and ran another 5.88 in his first round win over John Pott. In the semi-finals, Dale Pulde's 6.29 beat Beadle's 6.31. He qualified eighth with a 6.48-226.70 in the eight car field at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first round 6.51-222 beat Tom Anderson's 6.58 and a 6.25-226.69 beat Craig Epperly's quicker 6.19-230.17 in the semi-final. In the final he met Meyer who had set low et and top speed (6.12-240), but he shut down to a 6.85-149.75 and had to settle for runner-up. A 6.00 qualified second at the IHRA Summernationals but he lost to Pott in the first round. Another first round loss followed at the NHRA Grandnationals on July 4 where he qualified eighth again in an eight car show but he had a rear end break on his burnout for his race against Prudhomme. A 5.93 qualified second at the NHRA Summernationals but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified second again with a 5.94-236.22 at the PHR Championships in August at Martin, Michigan, and ran a first round 5.97 over Tim Grose. A semi-final 6.07 beat Ken Veney's quicker 6.03. In the final, a 6.02-248.61 (top speed) lost to Hawley's 6.01-236.22. Another win came at the IHRA Northern Nationals where he beat Tim Grose in the final. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, he qualified seventh. A first round 5.97-246.57 by Gary Burgin beat Ray's 6.05-243.90. At Indy, for the US Nationals, the Max qualified a disappointing twelfth with a 5.98-224.99. And once again he failed to make the finals. A 6.19 failed to qualify for the eight car show at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. He rebounded with a 5.98 to qualify seventh at the NHRA World Finals but again failed in his bid to make the finals. - Ron Howard
