Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedilik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 MPH funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph, while at the same time rumored to be experimenting with an exotic fuel (hydrazine?)

Notes: Russell "James" Liberman topped the 60sFunnyCars.com poll as the number one funny car racer of the 1960s. There is not much more than could be said about Russell Liberman, the man. Liberman ranked number 17 on the list of top NHRA drivers, had two NHRA national events victories (one of those as an owner), and an infamous legacy rivaling that of a rock star. Russell began his funny car career in such cars as the "Hercules," the "Gypsy" Corvette, and the "Brutus" GTO. Russell's stardom skyrocketed when he built the first "Jungle Jim" Chevy II. By 1969, "Jungle Jim's" long, smoking burnouts (some preceded by a fire burnout), high-speed backups, and long, twisting wheelstands had cemented his place as a popular racer with the fans. The showmanship had previously been backed up with average finishes, but these stopped in 1969. Russell had two Chevrolet powered Novas in 1969 with Clare Sanders in the second car. The two started the year off with a bang with Sanders beating Jungle at Pomona for the Winternationals title. Liberman then went on the match race circuit to win countless races, running bests of 7.28, 198.64. By the end of 1969, Jungle had one of the most successful years in history for a Chevy powered funny car. Liberman knew that the day of the successful Chevy powered engine in AA/FC was limited. By the end of the next year, "Jungle" had switched to a Hemi. (Info from Dennis Doubleday).

Notes: In 1968, Fred ordered a new funny car to be built by Ron Scrima and Pat Foster at exhibition Engineering. The '68 Barracuda was more traditional than the one it replaced. Still sponsored by the Plymouth Dealers Association of Southern California, Goeske called it the Hemi-Cuda II. The car debuted with a win at Lions Drag Strip and Goeske was the hottest funny car in Southern California for the next couple of months. Fred ran a best of 7.78 at 191.88 with the car. This car was powered by a 426 late-hemi with a B&M Torqueflite. | Goeske set a 7.58 Union Grove track record in July. Also in July he set both ends at Maple Grove with a 7.81-183.44. - Ron Howard

Notes: Fred Goeske came to fame as the second owner of the B&M Plymouth Dealers Barracuda in late 1966. Goeske raced the heavy stock rear engine car until the end of 1967. Notes: The original "Kingfish" match bash funny car was one the wildest funny cars of the 1960s. Famed Memphis racer Bill Taylor built the car in 1965 with the original wheelbase, but it got a needed extension by John Albright in 1966 to keep up with the new flip tops. The "Kingfish" Barracuda ran a 426 Chrysler Hemi on a heavy load of nitro. California racer Larry Reyes moved to Memphis just to drive the "Kingfish. " The brave driver ran a best of 8.59 at 169 with the car. The machine was retired at the end of the 1966 season to be replaced by a new flip top Barracuda.
