Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42-268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round and beat him with a 5.39-260.11 to Force's 5.46-275. In the second round be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43-264.23 and once again met Force in the first round. Again Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60-150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45-264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49-244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid South Nationals where a 5.36-264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round after qualifying #11 with a 5.57-263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44-252.66 setting up a first round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67-183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55-242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42-275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79-135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54-256.77 qualified #5 and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round with a 5.57-251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47-270 beat Tom's 5.68-211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5 and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76-248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round be beat Gary Ritter but in round two he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47-256.70. But once again McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47-273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one.

Notes: Billy Meyer downed Raymond Beadle in the final at the Golden Gate Nationals, 5.75 to 5.78, in what was then the quickest side-by-side Funny Car race of all time. Meyer finished second to Frank Hawley in the 1982 points battle but had slumped badly in 1983, winning just one round of competition heading into the Baylands event. Meyer was not even ranked in the top 10, but after qualifying sixth with a 5.90, his Chief Auto Parts, 7-Eleven Pontiac came to life with a 5.84 in the semi's and a 5.75 in the final against low qualifier Beadle. - NHRA

Notes: Set national record at 5.90 at 1981 Mile High nationals (altitude factored?) Ran first five with a 5.99 at Gainesville 3/15/81 to become the 7th member of the Cragar Five Second FC Club. Need to confirm that this was a Mike Kase car. | Kenny started the season in a good way, by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson on Jan 18. He qualified #2 with a 6.69-196 and in the first round he picked up to a 6.56-211 to beat Tom Hoover's 6.85-209. In the semifinals, he ran 6.56 again at 213 to beat a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. In the final, he unleashed low ET (traction was poor) 6.54-214 to take the win over low qualifier Gordie Bonin's 6.68-202. At Pomona on Feb 1 for the NHRA Winternationals, Kenny barely made the field, qualifying #15. He lost to Denny Savage in the first round. That should have been it for his Pomona story but in the semifinals, his Texas neighbors, the "Blue Max" team had blown off its roof on a 245 mph run that beat Prudhomme. They had no spare body so Bernstein offered up his spare. The "Max" team cut the roof off of his car and grafted it onto theirs. All that effort and they lost to Billy Meyer in the final. On March 8, Kenny was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.42-226.13 qualified #8 in the sixteen car field. Unfortunately, the race was postponed one week due to rain and he was unable to return the following week. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 6.01-245.90. He beat Ron Colson's 6.06-233 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round with a 5.99-238.72. He advanced past Prudhomme in round two when the "Snake" got crossed up. In the semifinal, he lost to Bonin. A week later (March 22), he was in the winner's circle at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET at 6.18 and beat Shirl Greer and Dale Pulde to reach the final. In the final, he ran the team he helped at Pomona, the Raymond Beadle driven "Blue Max." Kenny took the victory with a 6.45-212. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. It was an eight car show and Kenny's 6.27-233.76 qualified #2. He set low ET in the first round with a 6.15-240.00 that beat Brian Conway. In the semifinals, a 6.45-209.79 lost to Beadle's 6.25-228. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta also had an eight car field. It was a tough show to make with a 6.16 "bump." A 6.09-241.28 qualified Bernstein #3. He made his way to the finals by beating Meyer in the first round with a 6.08-242.58, and in the semifinals, Prudhomme broke against him. In the final, he faced Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. It was a close race but Tripp's 6.07-233 beat Kenny's 6.08-243.90 (top speed). May 3 found the "Budweiser King" team at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 6.03 and won his first round race over Paul Smith with a 6.14-231.36. In the semifinal, his 6.28-226.70 lost to Meyer's 6.26-213.77. OCIR hosted the NHRA Western Regional on May 9. Things didn't go well there. It was an eight car show with a soft "bump" of only 6.47. The "Budweiser King" failed to qualify. After that it was off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.17-245.90 (top speed) qualified #5 in the eight car field. He faced low qualifier, Beadle in the first round and smoked the tires and lost. He ended the month of May with a runner up finish to Meyer at the IHRA World Nationals. He did come away with low ET at 5.97. At the NHRA Springnationals, Kenny qualified #5 with a 6.12-239.36. This set up an interesting first round race with his eventual crew chief, Dale Armstrong. Bernstein won that first round race with a 6.18-238 but he didn't get much further when his round two 6.21-233.16 lost to Beadle's 6.15-235.

Notes: This was one of the first five funny's to top 200 mph. Making a lot of horsepower to push that big frontal area to those speeds. Sid debuted this car for some test runs at Memphis on August 17. The car had just been finished earlier that week. With some old slicks on the car the ET's weren't the best but on the second pass he ran 174 and on his last of three runs he turned 179.64. This was on a 184 track record. Best et in '68 was a 7.51. Confirmed 7.76 Jackson Sid raced at an eight car show at New York on Oct 13. He singled in the first round when Ken Poffenberger failed to fire, and another single run of 7.88 got him into the final when Al Hanna was unable to show. In the final, a 7.89 finished second best to Henry Garcia's 7.73 in the Car Shop Camaro. -- RH | Photo from the '68 OCIR mfg. meet. Ran 7.80s.

Notes: Won three straight weekends at Lions and set a track record at 6.63. This car didn't get the recognition it deserved, beating a lot of the "name" drivers at the time. Stan ran at Irwindale's New Year's Day FC Festival to start the season. He qualified #6 in the sixteen car show with a 7.28. In the first round, he beat Mert Littlefield with a 7.54-189.06. In round two, he got past a motor blowing Ron O'Donnell and in the semifinals, he beat Gene Conway but blew his engine doing it and was unable to make the final. He was at OCIR for the first All-Pro event where he beat Conway in the first round with a 7.10-204.54. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the semifinals. Lions hosted the AHRA Grand American on Jan 10 and Shiroma made it to the final. He ran a 7.71 over Dick Harrell's Vega and a 7.12 beat Larry Arnold in round two. A semifinal 7.55 beat a tire-smoking Dunn and advanced him into the final against Gene Snow. The 'Cuda lost fire on the line and Snow singled for the win. At Pomona for the Winternationals. Stan qualified #6 with a 7.17. In the first round, he advanced with a 7.19-205.47 when Don Prudhomme broke. He lost in round two when the 'Cuda failed to fire advancing Snow. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost in the second round to Dunn. Still, in March, he raced at an eight car show at OCIR. He lost to John Lombardo in the first round. On March 20 he was at Irwindale for the "Potpourri" race. He set Low ET at 7.17 but failed to make the finals. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race on March 27. He ran a strong 6.95-211.76 over Conway in round one but in round two he lost to Dave Beebe. The "Skulker" caught fire on the run but Stan was OK. He was back in business in April at an eight car show at Lions. A first round 7.05-189.47 beat Wendell Shipman and in the semifinals, a good 7.00-208.33 lost to Dunn's better 6.92-194. At the OCIR "Hang Ten" FC race, Stan ran a 7.11-189.87 in the first round over Densham's 7.24. In round two a 6.94-213.27 beat Bob Hawkins but he lost to Rich Siroonian in the semifinals.

Notes: Third Woody Gilmore car. Photo taken at the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 6.47 at 221 for this car in 1973. | We ran back to back 6.30s at 235 at Englishtown 73, match racing Jungle Jim. This was just the 426 Ramchargers motor, not the 475 inch Ed Pink stroker. We could not make that bigger motor run as well as the smaller Rams motor, although the Snake, Ray Beadle, Pat Foster, and others had luck with it. We had two Ed Pink motors, but ran a tenth and a half slower than the 426. We ran high 6.30s at NY National. We ran 6.39 at Detroit. Then the Ramchargers came out and ran 6.38 to get the track record back. Then we came out and ran 6.36 to take it back again. I stopped racing at the end of 1973. I had developed some ulcer problems and that ended my deal. Too much living out a suitcase and not eating right, etc. Had a chance to race for Mazmanian a year later when Danny Ongais went Indycar racing, but was having too much fun with my young son and stayed out. Ended up driving display rigs for Mr. Gasket and Bob Glidden, but that was as close as I got to the action again. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6-08-15

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI 1985. Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79-250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73-252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76-253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semi finals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91-254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off 25.41-31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93-253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70-250.83. A first round 5.75-250.69 beat Oswald but while running Pulde in the second round he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified first with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254 but against Scott Kalitta in the first round he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79-254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round against him and McCulloch's 5.82-255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semi finals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81-247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69-252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90-244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77-253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88-233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79 251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75-254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI 1985. | After a great season in '84, Jim returned to the Funny Car wars in '85 hoping for more. He started the season by qualifying #12 with a 5.94-249.44 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.25 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.80. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.23 and lated until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.89-244.69 qualified #14 and in the first round he had problems and shut off to a 14.60-56.13 that lost to Dale Pulde's 5.87-243. Jim was having a tough time getting past the first round and it continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he lost to Jody Smart in the first frame. On a good note, he was qualifying for all these shows, a hard thing to do. He almost didn't make the field at the NHRA Southern Nationals where his 6.02-248.89 qualified #15. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. He made up for those early losses at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge on May 26. There he qualified #13 with a 5.98-246.44. He beat Tim Grose in the first round and in round two, Prudhomme broke on his burnout, advancing Jim into the semifinals. In his semifinal race, a 5.93-245 beat Ron Correnti putting him in the final against Bernstein. Head would have rather raced for the win than take a solo trip, but Bernstein broke on the line and Jim soloed with a 5.93-248.48 for the victory. Things reverted bad to "normal" at the next few races. His next event was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" spot of the sixteen car show with a 5.98 but he lost to Pulde in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.95-234.13 but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. The pattern continued at the NHRA Grandnationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.83-251.53 and lost early.

Notes: Blown fuel, Howell 109" tube steel chassis. A Feburary 3, 1967, Drag News booking ad says the car ran 8.30-175, probably in 1966. Car was run into 1967, then sold to Dick Stokes, who ran it as an injected funny car on the UDRA circuit as the "Blue Bandit" into 1969. Don Gay, like Arnie Beswick, was a tried and true Pontiac racer. Dubbed the "Texas Teenager" by the drag racing press, Gay started racing stockers and super stockers when he was barely legal to drive out his father's Pontiac dealership. Don Gay's father not only bought racecars for his sons Don and Roy, he also bought Houston International Dragway. In 1964, the Gays built their first funny car out of a GTO. That car was replaced by an all-new 1965 GTO for Don and the old car was passed on to Roy. The Gays contracted famed racer Jay Howell to build the new car, an all fiberglass machine with a full tube chassis. The 421 Pontiac in the "Infinity" GTO was built by James Osteen, who was hired to oversee the Gay's racing operation. Don match raced regularly at Houston International and toured across the country. The beautiful GTO ran deep into the eights. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com)

Notes: On Oct 11, OCIR held an FC Open and after driving Tom Sturm's Corvair for most of the year, Bob showed up behind the wheel of this car. A blown trans in the first round gave Frank Pisano a single. The following weekend (Oct 18) was much better. At Lions for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade event, Bob ran a first round 7.41-183.67 over Fred Goeske's 7.84 and a second round 7.28-196.07 (Top Speed of meet) over Ken Safford's 7.95 in the Stone, Woods and Cook Mustang. In the final he set Low ET at 7.26-193.13 but fouled it away with Kelly Chadwick taking the win with an 8.06-138.46. At the Lions East/West meet on Oct 25, Bob ran a first round 7.29-200.44 but still lost to Pat Minick's 7.24-199.55. -- RH

Notes: Early in '69, until the Danny Ongais-Mickey Thompson combo jelled, there were calling Rich Siroonian the killer of the funny cars. He started the year like most other FC drivers at the Irwindale New Year's Day meet where he qualified second with a 7.62. He got crossed-up in the first round and lost to Norm Weekly's 8.10-192. Another first round loss came at the AHRA Winternationals where Dave Beebe got him in the first round. At Pomona on Feb 2 for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with an 8.22-185.11 and a first round 8.45 beat Ed Schartman's quicker 8.39. In the second round, an 8.10 beat Don Schumacher's 8.12. But in the semifinal, both he and Ray Alley ran 8.27's with Alley winning. He won the second OCIR All-Pro race on Feb 9 after qualifying #2 with a 7.47-196.50 (Top Speed) . In the final, he met and defeated Schumacher with a 7.39-195.22. Another win came at an eight car show at Lions on Feb 22. He ran 7.71-188.28 in the semifinal over Jim Liberman's 7.82 and in the final a 7.70-189.07 beat Alley. At Bakersfield on March 2, a 7.73 qualified Siroonian #2, and after two easy round wins (8.50-181 and 8.23-189) he met Ongais in the final. Danny ran a 7.56-193 Low ET of the meet to stop Rich's 7.74-192.71. At Riverside on March 16 for the HRM Championships, a 7.73 qualified Rich #5 and he beat Rusty Delling in the first round with a speed of 191.89 he broke and could not make the second round. On March 29 for the final OCIR All-Pro event, he ran a first round 7.62-193.80 over Gordon Mineo but Charlie Allen's 7.62-191 stopped his 7.68-192.70 in the semi's. Irwindale held an eight car show on April 13 and a 7.58-191.88 (Top Speed) qualified the 'Cuda #2. Mike Van Sant fouled against him in the first round and Rich still ran a 7.64-190.66. In the semifinal, against Steve Bovan it was his turn to foul. On May 3 at the OCIR Manufacturer's FC Open he qualified #1 for the Mopar team with a 7.68-190.26. Ongais' 7.55-192 beat his 7.61-194.80 in the first race and not only did he foul in his second race against Jim Ward's Javelin but he blew his trans as well. In his third race, an 8.71-168.53 beat Mike Van Sant. For the title, it was Ongais against Siroonian but the 'Cuda broke and Danny's 7.88-188 won. On May 10, Lion's held an eight car show and Rich's 7.70 (Low ET) qualified #1. He singled with a 7.71-189.43 in the first round but lost in the semifinal. Another win came his way on May 17 over an eight car field at Irwindale on May 17. A first round 7.74-192.30 beat Randy Walls' 7.81-180 and a semifinal 7.70-195.22 beat Johnny Wright's ailing Corvette. In the final, Rich's 7.79-190.26 beat Dave Beebe's quicker 7.77-196. Shortly after this, the car was revamped with a Keith Black 426 installed farther back in the chassis, replacing the 392.
