Notes: Fred Goeske came to fame as the second owner of the B&M Plymouth Dealers Barracuda in late 1966. Goeske raced the heavy stock rear engine car until the end of 1967. Tom McEwen ran this car in 1965 and early 1966. February 17, 1967 (National Dragster) says this car ran '8.50s in 1966' but confirmed 8.71 at Las Vegas (per 10-14-66 National Dragster).

Notes: The original "Kingfish" match bash funny car was one the wildest funny cars of the 1960s. Famed Memphis racer Bill Taylor built the car in 1965 with the original wheelbase, but it got a needed extension by John Albright in 1966 to keep up with the new flip tops. The "Kingfish" Barracuda ran a 426 Chrysler Hemi on a heavy load of nitro. California racer Larry Reyes moved to Memphis just to drive the "Kingfish. " The brave driver ran a best of 8.59 at 169 with the car. The machine was retired at the end of the 1966 season to be replaced by a new flip top Barracuda. Notes: Car started its life with a 421 Pontiac punched out to 440" and running ultra-ultra-rate Mickey Thompson hemi heads before reliability dictated the switch to an early 392 Hemi. An Irwindale ad says this car ran 8.55, and the Hot Rod Yearbook #6 says the best speed was 164.97. (Need confirmation of those times, slightly better than the timeslip-derived numbers provided here. ) Liberman started 1966 in his "Hercules" Chevy II before teaming up with Lew Arrington to make his name with this car. He finished 1966 behind the wheel of his new Chevy II. Liberman did drive the GTO early in 1967, as did owner Lew Arrington. The car was sold to Don Williamson in 1968, and destroyed in a crash later that year with future altered driver Jim Trillo at the wheel. -- RT and DD

Notes: This is that car, my personal favorite of all the Jungle Jim cars. Built by Romeo Palamides of jet car fame in Chicago, painted by Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint, then lettered by the infamous "Mr. J," it was a pretty trick piece at the time. Previously, Jungle had bought cars from various builders and even built a few himself at his shop in West Chester, Pennsylvania. This was Jungle's first store-bought piece in a long time and he decided to take it out to Ontario, California, for the 1972 NHRA SuperNationals. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know that one pass that weekend was Jungle's personal best at the time. -- Berserko Bob Doerrer

Notes: Ray built another car and was going to drive it himself. He asked me to come to Memphis for the first race. But we decided that it would be better if I drove the car and so I did after being laid up for a year. Notes: Dated photos confirm this car ran under the banner of "Fred Gibb Super Camaro Dealers" in the summer of '69. 7.37 Green Valley ick Harrell was the model drag racer of the 1960s. His race cars were immaculate, his car haulers were kept clean, and Harrell's interaction with sponsors and fans was second to none. Known as "Mr. Chevrolet," Harrell was one the most successful racers in AHRA drag racing history. Dick raced a series of stockers, super stockers, and factory experimentals until reaching the funny car ranks. Many felt his best funny car was the Fred Gibb sponsored 1969 Camaro. Don Hardy built the car in his Floydada, Texas, shop. The Camaro featured a 427 Chevrolet Rat for power backed by an automatic transmission. The car won many match races during 1969, running a best of 7.35 at 200 MPH plus. Info provided by James Ibusuki. -- BS | On Feb 16, Harrell ran 7.81 for Miami-Hollywood track record. Also ran 7.58 at Bristol. - Ron Howard

He switched to the team of Candies & Hughes in the Fall of 71 and promptly reset the NHRA National Record at Amarillo during the NHRA World Finals with an altitude corrected 6.80. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet he ran a very competitive 6.74 at 221.13 narrowly missing the final round which pitted the two lowest ET cars.

Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12, 1970. Ran 7.42-175 at OCIR on 4-18-70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race but there he lost in the first round to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off-pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round and a 7.50-195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (low et) 7.43-172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76-187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on Jan 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran a 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight car show at Lions on Feb. 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (Feb 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round and was disqualified. He had qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on Feb 22, a first round win forecast the final. Gene's 7.33-200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28-181.08 in the Blue Max.
