Notes: This is that car, my personal favorite of all the Jungle Jim cars. Built by Romeo Palamides of jet car fame in Chicago, painted by Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint, then lettered by the infamous "Mr. J," it was a pretty trick piece at the time. Previously, Jungle had bought cars from various builders and even built a few himself at his shop in West Chester, Pennsylvania. This was Jungle's first store-bought piece in a long time and he decided to take it out to Ontario, California, for the 1972 NHRA SuperNationals. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know that one pass that weekend was Jungle's personal best at the time. -- Berserko Bob Doerrer

Notes: Ray built another car and was going to drive it himself. He asked me to come to Memphis for the first race. But we decided that it would be better if I drove the car and so I did after being laid up for a year. In addition to qualifying at Indy 72 with a 6.533, 224.43, we ran 6.48, 6.46, and 6.44 at OCIR at the Manufacturer's Race in 1972. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6-08-15

Notes: Leroy started the year at the wheel of the Ramchargers Challenger. He was runner-up to Butch Maas at the NHRA Winternationals before winning the NHRA Gatornationals. He switched to the team of Candies & Hughes in the Fall of 71 and promptly reset the NHRA National Record at Amarillo during the NHRA World Finals with an altitude corrected 6.80. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet he ran a very competitive 6.74 at 221.13 narrowly missing the final round which pitted the two lowest ET cars.

Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12, 1970. Ran 7.42-175 at OCIR on 4-18-70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race but there he lost in the first round to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off-pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round and a 7.50-195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (low et) 7.43-172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76-187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on Jan 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight car show at Lions on Feb. 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (Feb 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round and was disqualified. He had qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on Feb 22, a first round win forecast the final. Gene's 7.33-200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28-181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27-201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50-194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35-201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37-189.47. OCIR held another eight car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the Final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight car event, a first round 7.86-172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81-192.30 beat his 7.92-186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette FC Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first round 7.35-197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41-198.23 in the Invader. A semi-final 7.42-175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44-191.08 but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95-141 and 7.86-179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88-185.56 and an 8.13-153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR FC 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42-198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's low et blast of 7.25-199.50 beat his 7.74-195.65. Snively must have had a hex on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54-188.28). A win came at a sixteen car field at Irwindale on July 17. On Aug 29 back at OCIR for an eight car show, Gene ran a first round 7.03-204.68 and a semifinal 7.10-202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12-205.47. A runner-up finish on Sept 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44-194.80 and 7.42-197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's low et and top speed of the meet 7.26-204.54 to Gene's 7.45-177.51. On Sept 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42-181.81 beat his 7.61-132.74 in the first round. Notes: Mid-size, all-steel Olds F-85 ran a lightened stock Olds frame with the front wheels moved up 7" and the rear a whopping 17". 400-cube Olds was bored and stroked to 496". GMC 6-71 blower, upright 4-hole Hilborn injection, Turbo-Hydramatic 400 trans, dropped front axle, leaf springs in back, Olds rear, 3,020 pounds. Following a towing accident towards the end of the '66 season the damaged driver-side sheetmetal was replaced and the previously red car got a new coat of black paint. Car occasionally ran gas but generally ran a 25 percent load of nitro. (Note: Times quoted not necessarily the car's fastest. "1967 New Funny Cars" magazine says car ran 180+ mph, likely in 1966.) -- RT

Notes: Without question, the most successful rear-engine funny in drag racing history was "Big Jim" Dunn's Cuda. This was the only one that ran a six-second time and the only one to win a national event, the 1972 NHRA Supernationals. The car featured a trick Woody Gilmore chassis with Dunn & Reath's 392 Chrysler Hemi for power. This car was the one featured in the movie Funny Car Summer in 1972. Dunn has mentioned that this car was very difficult to drive and seldom made a full pass. Jim's best time was an amazing 6.44 -- more than a half a second quicker than the next rear-engine funny car. The car was replaced by a new Satellite in 1974. It now resides in Western Canada. Ran 6.798, 205.94 at Tulsa PRO race. Also a 5th qualifying 6.46 at Ontario 72.

Notes: Hedrick drove Pete Seaton's Super Shaker Corvair in '67 and '68. In 1969, they built this new Chevy Nova with a Logghe chassis featuring independent front suspension. Early in the year, Terry bought out Pete and renamed the car Terry Hedrick's Super Shaker. Same orange, black and white paint scheme. No. 1 qualifier (7.30) at '69 Manufacturers Meet at OCIR. On April 5, at Orlando for the East Coast FC Championships, Hedrick ran a best of 8.02-185.56 on the way to winning the event over Norm Weekly in the Mr Norm Charger. He met Pat Minick at Connecticut for a best of three match race on May 4 and prevailed. Both cars ran 7.80 in the first race with Terry winning with a speed of 188.66 to Pat's faster 189. In the second race, Hedrick got out-of-shape and Minick's 7.71-190 won. In the do-or-die final race, Terry's 7.64-193.96 beat the Chi-Town-Hustler's 7.79-191. He didn't win the New York Spring Championships on May 18, but he did get top speed at 197.80. He also won his first round race with a 7.50, but he failed to make the finals. On May 29 he competed in a UDRA FC race at US 131, Martin, Mich. A first round 7.63-191.88 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.89-189. In the semi-final, he set top speed with a 7.67-196.50 over Gary Dyer in the Mr Norm Car. But in the final, a 7.83-191.08 was no match for Dick Harrell's strong 7.52-195.22. He won a four-car match race at Minnesota on June 1. The winner was decided on whoever won the most rounds. Terry won all three of his races and set low et at 7.56. His best speed at the event was 192.70. He met Bill Lawton at Connecticut on June 22 for a match race. Lawton proved he was hard to beat on his home track, winning the first race with a 7.75-188.66 over Terry's close 7.81-189.46. In the second race, Lawton had transmission trouble and shut off on the line giving Hedrick a 7.76-191.48 solo for the win. In the final race, Lawton came back with a 7.57-187 to win the match over Terry's out of shape 9.23 pass. On July 13, at Lebanon, he met Al Hanna for a match race. In the first round, Hedrick set a 7.31 track record at 200.00 over Al Hanna's 7.95-176. Al won the second race when Terry fell off to a 9.69-172, but in the third race, he reset the track record to a 7.29 again at 200.00 to Hanna's 7.62-191. He lost in the second round to Don Schumacher at the AHRA Nationals at New York National on August 17. Late in August, Detroit Dragway held an eight car show where all cars ran three rounds and the winner was decided by who won the most rounds. Hedrick won his first race with a holeshot, beating Lawton's 8.28-154 with an 8.38-191.44. He lost to Arnie Beswick's 8.19-183 in the second race with an 8.32-186.40. In his last race, he picked it up to a 7.44-195 to beat Beswick's 8.00-182. Another eight car show was held in Martin, Mich. US 131 on August 30. Terry ran a first round 7.42-197.80 over Bryan Teal's 8.12-138. But unfortunately, he fouled and was out.

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. In 1969, Saddleback Dodge was the new sponsor and Charlie repainted the car the more familiar red and silver. Charlie Allen and crew member Jeff Crowther ran a best of 7.29 at 199.96 in 1969. Keith Black 426 Hemi, B&M Torqueflite 3 spd. Auto. (Photo courtesy Bob Plumer and Drag Race Memories. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki, and Bill McLauchlan). | The 199.96 was run at Irwindale VERY early in 1969, and it never matched that speed the rest of its career. If that's a typo, this Dart did run 197.11 at Indy in 1969. February 1970 Speed & Super Cars magazine says this car ran 7.20s at Connecticut. I don't recall that. - Dennis Doubleday | Charlie started the '69 season with a big win at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. A 7.79 qualified sixth in the sixteen car field. A 7.72 beat Clare Sanders in Jim Liberman's second car at 7.90, and in round two he singled with a 7.61-193.96 when Norm Weekly failed to fire. In the semi-final, he ran his best ever, 7.56 (up to this time) at 199.96 over Ray Alley. In the final against Don Schumacher, he ran another 7.56 over Schumacher who lost a transmission. On Jan 12, he ran a match race against Jim Liberman at Irwindale. Jim won the first race with an 8.12-191 that beat the wheelstanding Dart. In the second race, Allen's 7.74-182.54 beat Jim who broke a rocker arm and shut off. In the final race, another wheelstand gave the match to Liberman who won with an 8.23-190. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. He rebounded nicely by qualifying first with a 7.46-191.88 at the second OCIR All-Pro race on Feb 9. Unfortunately, he failed to make it to the finals. He lasted until the semi-finals on Feb 16 at Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. He broke against Pat Foster at that race. The roles were reversed to the HRM Championships on March 16, when in the final, Foster broke a driveshaft and Allen motored to a 7.59-194.38 victory. He didn't back into this win as he qualified third with a 7.71, behind the two Mickey Thompson cars. A 7.67-193.96 advanced past the final round when Ronnie Runyan fouled. He singled in the second round with a 7.69-193.54 when Marv Eldridge failed to show. In the semi's, a 7.71-190.67 beat Rusty Delling's 8.05. Another big win came on March 29 at the final OCIR All-Pro race. There he ran 7.45-194.38 over a fouling Ray Alley, and a semi-final 7.62-191.88 beat Rich Siroonian's 7.68-192. In the final, he again took on a MT car, this time it was Danny Ongais. A blown transmission ended the Mustang's chances and Allen had another win. He took on Bill Lawton at Bill's home track, Connecticut, for a best of three match race. Charlie won three straight and lowered the track record on every run. In the first race a 7.61-193.54 beat Lawton's 7.90-175. He soloed with a 7.53-193.12 in the second race when Lawton had fuel pump problems. And a final run of 7.45-196.50 reset both ends of the track record. He set another track record while beating Tom McEwen at a match race at Suffolk on May 11 where a 7.29 was the new record. At Maple Grove, he beat Jim Liberman in another match race where he set a 7.60 track record. He went back to Connecticut on May 25 for a match race against Lew Arrington. In the first race a 7.67-184.80 beat Lew's 8.19-182. In the second race, a 7.99-188 by Brutus beat Allen's 8.30-164.86. In the final, both were loaded for bear, but a 7.73-188.88 by Allen beat Lew's 8.30-187 for the match win. He competed at the Connecticut Memorial Day Championships and a first round 7.99-150.75 beat an out of shape Joe Black. In the semi-finals, Lawton got some revenge by taking a 7.56-194 win over Allen's 7.60-191.05. He had some problems at the NHRA Springnationals when the NHRA didn't receive his entry in time. Luck was on his side though, when Doug Thorley, whose AMX had crashed three weeks before, gave Charlie his entry form. Thus, the car was qualified as a AMX in the entry blank. A 7.92-181.81 qualified eighth. As it was, he had trouble and withdrew from competition. On June 28, he raced Bruce Larson at Budd's Creek for a match race and lost two straight.

Notes: In 1968, Fred ordered a new funny car to be built by Ron Scrima and Pat Foster at exhibition Engineering. The '68 Barracuda was more traditional than the one it replaced. Still sponsored by the Plymouth Dealers Association of Southern California, Goeske called it the Hemi-Cuda II. The car debuted with a win at Lions Drag Strip and Goeske was the hottest funny car in Southern California for the next couple of months. Fred ran a best of 7.78 at 191.88 with the car. This car was powered by a 426 late-hemi with a B&M Torqueflite. | Goeske set a 7.58 Union Grove track record in July. Also in July he set both ends at Maple Grove with a 7.81-183.44. - Ron Howard
