Notes: Car had that really wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI 1985. Billy started the '85 season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 6.03-239.36. He lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91-254 beat his 5.97-243. A best of 5.93-229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. In the semifinal, he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95-243 with a 5.88-250. In the final, he faced Pulde and they both ran 5.80's (Billy's at Top Speed of the meet,261.62), but Dale got the win. He lost early in Atlanta for NHRA's Southern Nationals after qualifying #8 with a 5.93-208.04. Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3 with a 5.84-247.38 but in the first round he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.83-236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round. A second round 5.81-242 beat a tire smoking John Force and in the semi finals, a 5.82 beat John Collins' 5.94. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81-251 gave Meyer a runner-up finish. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.70-256.70 for the #2 spot.

Notes: Billy qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced Don Prudhomme in the first round and his 6.18-241 beat the "Snake's" 6.32-201. Meyer lost to the eventual winner Tom Hoover in round two. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals and in the first round he beat Dale Pulde but a 6.37-236 in round two lost to Prudhomme's 6.31-236. He failed to qualify at the rain postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals.

Notes: Without question, the most successful rear-engine funny in drag racing history was "Big Jim" Dunn's Cuda. This was the only one that ran a six-second time and the only one to win a national event, the 1972 NHRA Supernationals. The car featured a trick Woody Gilmore chassis with Dunn & Reath's 392 Chrysler Hemi for power. This car was the one featured in the movie Funny Car Summer in 1972. Dunn has mentioned that this car was very difficult to drive and seldom made a full pass. Jim's best time was an amazing 6.44 -- more than a half a second quicker than the next rear-engine funny car. The car was replaced by a new Satellite in 1974. It now resides in Western Canada. Ran 6.798-205.94 at Tulsa PRA race. Also a 5th qualifying 6.46 at Ontario 72. Set Bonneville track record at 6.85, then reset that in the final with a win over Bob Pickett in Pete's Lil' Demon (but ET unknown). Ran 6.63-213.27 at OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. Qualified at final OCIR WCS points meet with a 6.67 in the last qualifying pass. Featured (of course) in the movie Funny Car Summer.

Notes: Photo from 1990 Nationals. Scott qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38-269.94. A first round 5.39-268.49 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled but in round two he slowed to 5.44-250.62 and lost to Bruce Larson's 5.31-271. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.42-269.38 but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals and the best time Scott was able to run (6.72-135.48) failed to qualify. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, things went better, but not much. He qualified #15 with a 5.64-257.21 but he lost to John Force in the first round. Another first round loss came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.56-262.00 before losing to McCulloch.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Drag Racing List has 5.845-250.69 times from Maple Grove national event. | Larson attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but his best of 6.31-168.53 failed to make the field. In March he faced off with Dominic Santucci for a best of three match race at Englishtown. Larson won two straight running times of 6.28-230.76 and 6.17-238.09. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.28-225.79 failed to qualify. He competed at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #3 in the eight car field. He advanced past the first round with a 6.00 before losing in the semifinals. Bruce got into the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.25-220.26 held the "bump spot" in the sixteen car show. He lost to Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 6.02-237.21 at the NHRA Springnationals but he lost early. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Magazine Nationals and Larson was there, running a 6.03-233.76 to qualify #5 in the eight car field. Unfortunately, that set up a first round meeting with low qualifier (5.62) Kenny Bernstein. Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.00-144.69 that lost to Kenny's 5.75-254. In late June he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Only twelve cars showed for the sixteen car show so qualifying wasn't a problem. Bruce ran a 6.12-240.12 to qualify #11. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Billy Meyer's ailing 9.22-91. On July 2, Englishtown held its Funny Car Spectacular. Larson lost to West's 5.78-258 in the first round with a 6.31-184.04, but he got back in on the "break rule." So in round two he ran Roy Harris but Bruce had problems and shut off to a 9.10-86.04 that lost to Roy's 6.39-180. He was back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals where he ran a 5.99-243.11 to qualify on the "bubble." In the first round he lost to Tom Hoover. On August 3, he competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #8 with a 6.20 in the sixteen car show. He lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. The following week (Aug 9), he was at the U.S. Funny Car Nationals where he ran a 6.19-236.22 to qualify #6 in the six car show. He lost early. At Indianapolis for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, his best of 6.07-237.59 was only good enough for the sixth alternate spot. He also attempted to make the show at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals but he had problems and failed to qualify with a 7.32-118.18 best. In the season long NHRA points chase he finished #19.

Notes: Beadle was running with Ford sponsorship for 1982, which included a new EXP body on his car. He started the season by qualifying third at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.99-228.42. He ran as well as a 5.97-244.56 in his semifinal win over Frank Hawley's quicker 5.96-239. In the final, he met Al Segrini where his 6.32-226.13 fell to Al's 6.26-238.09. A 5.91-243.90 (Top Speed) qualified first at the Gatornationals but in the first round he met Segrini again and this time Beadle got out of shape and hit the guardrail. The car ended up flipping upside down and slid into the opposite guardrail before coming to a halt. He was OK but the EXP body was totaled. At the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, the team showed up with last year's Omni body and qualified first with a 6.02 (Low ET) but he failed to make the finals. He then went to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 25 where a 5.98-235.60 qualified third. A first round 5.88-238 beat Gary Burgin and a 5.93-240 beat Paul Smith in the semifinals. In the final, he reset the NHRA record to a 5.87 with a speed of 243.24 to win the race over Hawley. On May 2 he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am where a track record 5.86 led qualifying. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the first round and lost to John Pott. He followed that race up with a win at the NHRA Cajun Nationals beating Don Prudhomme in the final with a 6.08-239.36 over Don's 6.13-247.25. He qualified second with a 6.00. Another win came at the IHRA Springnationals where he set Low ET (6.00) and beat Billy Meyer in the final. He then ran at the NHRA Springnationals on June 13 where a 5.98-242.58 qualified third but in the first round he smoked all eight pistons and lost to Segrini. A week later at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, Beadle set a 5.88 track record in qualifying and ran another 5.88 in his first round win over John Pott. In the semifinals, Dale Pulde's 6.29 beat Beadle's 6.31. Raymond won the U.S. FC Championships at Brainerd on June 27. He beat Doc Halladay and Glen Mikres before stopping Burgin in the final. He qualified eighth with a 6.48-226.70 in the eight car field at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first round 6.51-222 beat Tom Anderson's 6.58 and a 6.25-226.69 beat Craig Epperly's quicker 6.19-230.17 in the semifinal. In the final he met Meyer who had set Low ET and Top Speed (6.12-240), but he shut down to a 6.85-149.75 and had to settle for runner-up. A 6.00 qualified second at the IHRA Summernationals but he lost to Pott in the first round. Another first round loss followed at the NHRA Grandnationals on July 4 where he qualified eighth again in an eight car show but he had a rear end break on his burnout for his race against Prudhomme. A 5.93 qualified second at the NHRA Summernationals but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified second again with a 5.94-236.22 at the PHR Championships in August at Martin, Michigan, and ran a first round 5.97 over Tim Grose. A semifinal 6.07 beat Ken Veney's quicker 6.03. In the final, a 6.02-248.61 (Top Speed) lost to Hawley's 6.01-236.22. Another win came at the IHRA Northern Nationals where he beat Tim Grose in the final. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, he qualified seventh. A first round 5.97-246.57 by Gary Burgin beat Ray's 6.05-243.90. At Indy, for the U.S. Nationals, the Max qualified a disappointing twelfth with a 5.98-224.99. And once again he failed to make the finals. A 6.19 failed to qualify for the eight car show at the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. He rebounded with a 5.98 to qualify seventh at the NHRA World Finals but again failed in his bid to make the finals. - Ron Howard

Notes: After starting the year driving the Super Duster Bobby took the seat in the Hawaiian replacing Butch Maas. At the 1971 OCIR Manufacturers Meet Bobby lead the Dodge team (6.78) in qualifying and eventually set Top Speed of the meet with 6.75, 224.43 run. He won 2 of the 3 rounds contested losing only to Jim Dunn's Low ET of the meet 6.70 while running a very respectable 6.76.

Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12, 1970. Ran 7.42-175 at OCIR on 4-18-70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race but there he lost in the first round to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round and a 7.50, 195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (Low ET) 7.43-172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76-187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on Jan 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight car show at Lions on Feb. 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (Feb 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round and was disqualified. He qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on Feb 22, a first round win foretold the final. Gene's 7.33-200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28-181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis, a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27-201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50-194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35-201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37-189.47. OCIR held another eight car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the Final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight car event, a first round 7.86-172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81-192.30 beat his 7.92-186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette FC Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (Low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first round 7.35, 197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41, 198.23 in the Invader. A semifinal 7.42-175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44-191.08 but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95-141 and 7.86-179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88-185.56 and an 8.13-153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR FC 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42, 198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's Low ET blast of 7.25, 199.50 beat his 7.74, 195.65. Snively must have had a hEx on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54-188.28). A win came at a sixteen car field at Irwindale on July 17. He qualified first with a 7.67-190.26 (Top Speed) and beat Dave Beebe in the final with Low ET at 7.63. He then won the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 25, beating Ray Alley in the final with a 7.65-181.81. On Aug 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships, he ran a 7.42-188.28 in the first round and a 7.73-177.51 in the second before his car caught fire in the semis. Gene was OK. Conway fixed the car and installed a Crowerglide clutch set up with a Lenco two-speed transmission. With this set up, he showed up at OCIR on Aug 15 for their Anniversary Race. A first round 7.27-188.28 beat Leroy Hales' 7.84-184. In the second round, a 7.33-194.80 beat Bob McFarland's 7.97-176 and in the semifinal, a 7.70-200 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.84-177. In the final, Gene ran his best ever speed and et of 7.18-206.89 over Mike Snively's 7.30-203. On Aug 29 back at OCIR for an eight car show, Gene ran a first round 7.03-204.68 and a semifinal 7.10-202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12-205.47. A runner-up finish on Sept 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44-194.80 and 7.42, 197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.26-204.54 to Gene's 7.45-177.51. On Sept 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42-181.81 beat his 7.61-132.74 in the first round. At the OCIR East-West Championships on Oct 10, Gene's 7.19, 198.67 beat Snively's 7.30-205.01 in the West portion of the race but for the overall title he lost to Don Schumacher. Conway had run a best of 7.09-201.34 at the race. Gene (7.23-184.80) lost to Dave Beebe (7.09, 198.23) in the first round at the next event on Oct 24 at Lions, followed by a runner-up finish to John Collins in John Bateman's Maverick at the Pumpkin Day Open at Irwindale. He qualified fifth with a 7.30 and ran a first round 7.28-208.32 over Larry Arnold. A semifinal 7.37-205.46 beat Charlie Therwhanger but Collins' 7.23-200.88 beat his 7.44-188.24 in the final. At Irwindale for a 32 car show on Nov 14, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Arnold's 7.09-208.80 (Top Speed) in the second round. Gene qualified fifth on Nov 21 at Lions for an eight car show. He ran 7.28-185.18 to beat a wheelstanding Randy Walls in the first round before smoking the tires to a losing 15.50-58 in the semis against Bob Pickett who won with an 8.49-131. Gene failed to qualify for Irwindale's Toys for tots race. He had a streak of luck when number eight qualifier Larry Arnold broke and Conway got into the show. He almost went all the way, beating Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round with a 7.29, 196.05 and then beating Jim Liberman in the ailing "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with a 7.37-200.44. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don had been running in the sixes on every run and in the final it was no different as the "Snake's" 6.92-192 beat Conway who crossed the centerline. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed at 6.925-218.97. Assuming that was run in 1971.

Notes: Photo from Martin, MI 1981. Also hit first five with a 5.98 at Gainesville on 3/14/81 to become the sixth member of the Cragar Five Second FC Club. | Armstrong ran really well at Famoso on March 8 for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #2 with a 6.251-236.22. A first round 6.27-231.95 beat Dave Condit's 6.45-228. In round two, a consistent 6.25 beat Gary Densham who shut off and in the semifinals, he improved to a 6.17-242.58 (Top Speed), over Craig Epperly who broke. He lost to Dale Pulde in the final but it was still a strong showing. From there he went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He ran his first ever "five," a 5.98-241.93 to qualify #4. A first round 6.04-234.37 took out John Force but he hurt some parts and was unable to show for his second round match against Pulde. In May he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Eastern Regional, and while he failed to reach the finals, he did get Top Speed with a 234.99. On June 21 he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.25-229.59 qualified #13 in the field. He lost to future employer Kenny Bernstein in the first round. He made it into the final at the next NHRA race, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #4 with a 5.99-231.95. In the first round, opponent Rick Johnson broke and Dale ran an easy 6.23-209.78 to advance. In round two, a 6.14-229.59 beat Fuzz Miller's 6.32-224. In the semifinal, a 6.18-231 advanced into the final over a tire smoking Mike Dunn. In the final, he had lane choice over Don Prudhomme but Armstrong blew an engine and his 7.08-125.52 finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.07-241. At the NHRA Grandnationals in August, Dale qualified #3 in the eight car show with a 6.05-236.22. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round and Armstrong advanced with a 6.25-231.36. He lost to Bernstein in the semifinals. The two met again at the PHR Championships. Dale qualified #5 with a 6.22 in the eight car show. He beat a fouling Mike Dunn with a 6.08-231.36 and Tom Hoover in the semi's with a 6.19-225.56. So once again Bernstein and Armstrong ran against one another, this time in the final. Unfortunately, Dale hurt his engine in his semifinal win and was unable to run so Kenny soloed for the win.

Notes: Won AHRA Winternationals 1972. | At the end of June through the July 4 weekend, ran nine races in 14 days! Set the track record at Beech Bend at 6.45-220.04 over the July 4 weekend. - Dale Pulde, 7/03/15 | Pulde started the season with a win at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline but he had to beat the "killer car" of the day, not once but twice to get the victory. In the semifinals, Dale ran a 6.71 to beat Pat Foster's 6.72 in the bucks-up "Barry Setzer Vega." Leroy Goldstein won the other semifinal race but he broke and was unable to make the final. That meant that Dale would race Foster again for the title. Dale won that final with a 6.68 over Pat's 6.85. The MT Pinto was at the Lions Grand Premiere race and Dale beat Bill Leavitt's 7.11 in the first round with a 6.79-215.82 but he lost in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, once again Pulde met Foster. It happened in the semifinals and they both smoked the tires with Dale's 7.57 beating the Vega's 7.78. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch and the Pinto lost a motor giving Ed the victory. The team was at Lakeland on March 6 for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.96 qualified #6 in the field. He beat Charlie Wilson in the first round with a 7.02, and in round two, he beat a crossed up Jim Liberman. In the semifinal, a 7.15 beat Preston Davis and he found himself in another final round. Unfortunately, in the final he crossed the centerline and Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" got the win. At the AHRA Pro-Am race at West Palm Beach, Dale lost in the second round to McCulloch. He was at Rockingham on April 30 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It didn't go smoothly for the MT team as he lost two engines. The second engine let go while winning his second round race and he was unable to run against Foster in the semifinal.

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedlik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 MPH funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph while at the same time rumored to be Experimenting with an Exotic fuel (hydrazine?) | Grove had a bad year in '69. At least in comparison to '68 and '70. He had lots of transmission problems and was also trying to sort out the Boss 429 as well as running the proven SOHC. He failed to qualify at both the Irwindale New Year's Day Race and the second OCIR All-Pro race on Feb. 9 where an 8.08 was only good for the eighth alternate. He also failed to qualify at Bakersfield for the March Meet. Grove was the Killer Car on the match race trail in '68 and was feared by everyone who matched against him, but '69 was not the same. On March 30, he was at Aquasco for a best of three match against Lew Arrington. He won the first race with a shut off 8.61-168.22 when Lew got out of shape but in the second race while coming to the line, it looked like a blower let go but it was actually his motor self-destructing. Lew soloed in the "Brutus" to two more wins for the match race win. He ran Fred Goeske at Capitol on April 12 and lost two straight even though he set Top Speed at 195. He ran better at Aquasco on May 4 for their fourth annual FC Invitational. A first round 7.91-191.08 beat Tom McEwen's off pace 8.23 and another 7.91-191.88 in the semis advanced over Frank Oglesby in the Don Nicholson Cougar. In the final, Tom fouled against Jim Liberman's 7.86-189. On May 27, Aquasco held another eight-car FC race. Grove's 8.10-188.66 in the first round lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.83-197. After his loss, Tommy came back out later and made two runs, an 8.12-189.86 and an 8.09-191.88. Liberman met Grove at York U.S. 30 on June 7 for another match race and JJ beat Grove three straight races. On June 21, Grove was at Lakeland for the Memphis FC Championships. He fouled against Dick Harrell in the first round and shut down to an 8.81-165. He had some more bad luck the next day at Kingston when he lost a best of three match to Paula Murphy. On July 3, Edgewater held an eight car FC show. Unfortunately, Charlie Allen strapped a 7.37 Low ET of the meet run on Tom in the first round, putting the Mustang on the trailer. He also lost in the first round at Capitol's King of King's FC event on July 16. This time, Oglesby's 7.98-178 beat Tom's ailing 8.71-187.88. He ran much better at the Cars Magazine Meet on July 20 where he set a 7.42 track record at 201 in the first round while beating Al Graeber. In round two a 7.74-197.36 beat Ron Rivero's out-of-shape pass. But then the rain came and the rest of the race was to be run on Sunday. Grove had prior commitments and could not run Sunday. Liberman had a rematch with Grove at Capitol on Sept 20 and once again JJ prevailed although the times were close. Jim ran a best of 7.28-199.10 to Grove's 7.29-203. The following day (Sept 21) he ran at the third annual New England FC Championships where he set a 7.30 Epping track record in the first round while losing to Roger Lindamood's 7.33-198. Tom's speed was 199.50. An interesting thing happened to Grove on Oct 11 when he showed up to run at the OCIR FC Invitational. He was informed that his competition license had expired back in Jan and he was unable to run. After straightening out the drivers license issue, he showed up at Irwindale on Oct 18 for the East/West Championships but lost to Liberman's 7.76-195 in the first round with an out-of-shape 8.23. All cars had run the first round with the losers going into a bracket two while the winners ran bracket one. So Tom then met Rich Siroonian in bracket two but his 8.02-184.80 lost to Rich's 7.53-199. He competed at Sears Point on Nov 2 but lost a blower early in the race. - Ron Howard

Notes: Russell "James" Liberman topped the 60sFunnyCars.com poll as the number one funny car racer of the 1960s. Not much more can be said about Russell Liberman, the man. Liberman ranked number 17 on the list of top NHRA drivers, had two NHRA national events victories (one of those as an owner), and an infamous legacy rivaling that of a rock star. Russell began his funny car career in such cars as the "Hercules," the "Gypsy" Corvette, and the "Brutus" GTO. Russell's stardom skyrocketed when he built the first "Jungle Jim" Chevy II. By 1969, "Jungle Jim's" long, smoking burnouts (some preceded by a fire burnout), high-speed backups, and long, twisting wheelstands had cemented his place as a popular racer with the fans. The showmanship had previously been backed up with average finishes, but these stopped in 1969. Russell had two Chevrolet-powered Novas in 1969 with Clare Sanders in the second car. The two started the year off with a bang with Sanders beating Jungle at Pomona for the Winternationals title. Liberman then went on the match race circuit to win countless races, running bests of 7.28, 198.64. By the end of 1969, Jungle had one of the most successful years in history for a Chevy powered funny car. Liberman knew that the day of the successful Chevy powered engine in AA/FC was limited. By the end of the next year, "Jungle" had switched to a Hemi. (Info from Dennis Doubleday). | JJ started his season by qualifying #13 at the Irwindale New Year's Day race and a first round 7.67-191.08 beat Fred Goeske's 7.88-184. In the second round, his Nova came up ailing against Don Schumacher who unloaded a 7.52, 198 to put Jim on the trailer. He faced off against Charlie Allen for a match race on Jan 12 at Irwindale and won his first race with an 8.12-191.08 over Allen's wheelstanding Dart. Allen came back with a 7.74-182 to win the second race over Jim who broke a rocker arm. JJ won the deciding match with an 8.23-190.26 when Charlie pulled another wheelie and lost. At the AHRA Winternats, Jim beat Tony Wahlay and Allen before meeting Clare Sanders in his second car in the semis. He beat a motor blowing Clare but since they were taking turns driving each of the cars he let Sanders drive in the final. He qualified #7 with a 7.74-186.32 on Feb. 9 at the second OCIR All-Pro race. It was an unusual event for Jim and he ended up getting beat twice. In the first round he lost to Danny Ongais' 7.60-160 in the first round with a 7.69-191.88. But Ongais lost an engine in his Mickey Thompson owned Mustang and was unable to repair for the semifinals. This got JJ reinstated and he faced Don Schumacher in the semis. He ran a good 7.74-192.30 but it wasn't good enough to get around Schumacher's 7.43, 198. JJ raced at an eight-car show at Lion's on Feb. 22 and ran a first round 7.72-184.42 over Steve Bovan. He lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.71 in the semis with a 7.82. Another match race was run this time against Sid Foster in the Super Cuda at Cecil County in March. JJ won the first race with a 7.83-171.11 beat Sid's 8.10-183 and Jim wrapped it up in the second race with a 7.60-187.10 to beat Foster's 8.07-169 and win the match. On April 6, he ran Schumacher at Connecticut and beat him three straight setting a 7.62 track record as well. He then took on Ron Rivero on April 13 at Atco where he won his first race with an out of shape 8.34-172.41. Ron won the second race with an 8.06-187 when JJ shut down early, and he went on to win the match with a 7.81, 196 when Liberman crossed the centerline in the last race. He got back into his winning ways on April 19 at Blaney when he took on Schumacher. JJ won the first race, but Don won the second race with an 8.00-191 beating JJ's 8.07-182. Both were up for the final, but Jim had a good leave and won the match with an 8.00-182 that beat Schumacher who set 7.94-190 track records in losing. Another match race win came the next day on April 20 at Aquasco where he beat Dick Loehr two straight with a best of 7.89. He lost a match race on May 3 at York U.S. 30 when Pat Foster beat him three straight. Jim got out of shape on his first race and lost to Pat's 8.11-175. In the second race, Jim fouled away a new track record of 7.66 at 191.48 against the Mustang's 7.82-189.86. In the last race, Foster reset the track record with a 7.63-188.28 over Jim's 7.71. He traveled to Aquasco the next day (May 4) for an eight-car show, where a first round 7.84-187.88 beat Malcolm Durham's 8.13-180. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.81-189.06 over Don Schumacher's 7.98-191. He faced Tommy Grove in the final but Grove fouled and Jim ran 7.86-189.06 for the win. On May 14 he met Dick Loehr at Martin, Mich for a match race. Jim won his first race with a 7.80-188.28 when Loehr fouled (7.86-189.06). Dick came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 7.72 to JJ's best of 7.76-189.86. Way up north, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, he had a match race against Pat Minick. The Chi-Town Hustler was running strong beating Liberman in all three races with track records of 7.45, 196. He went back to Aquasco for another eight-car show on May 27, and again he won, beating a fouling Durham in the final. Back as U.S. 131 in Martin, Mich on May 29, for a UDRA race. Dick Harrell ran a 7.84-192 to just nip JJ's 7.85-184.04 in the first round. Early in June, Larry Arnold in the Super Cuda met JJ at Suffolk for a best of three match. Jim ran 7.72-189.86 over Arnold's 8.16-179 in the first race, a 7.54-194.80 over Arnold's 7.66-190.26 in the second race and a 7.52-193.54 to make it three straight over Larry's 7.66-191. Another match race followed on June 7 at York U.S. 30 against Grove's Mustang. Once again JJ won three straight with times of 7.61-191.70, 7.65 and a 7.70. The following day (June 8) he ran the New England FC Championships at Epping. A first round 7.69-187.90 beat Al Hanna and a 7.61-190.22 beat Chevy foe Bruce Larson in round two. In the semis, JJ needed only a 7.95 to beat Roger Lindamood's ailing Charger at 11.37. In the final a 7.73-189 beat Paul Stefansky's 8.18 for the win. At an eight-car show at New York, he set Low ET at 7.49-193.54 while beating Frank Oglesby, but while lining up for his semifinal race the Chevy lost oil pressure and Jim shut off. Aquasco held their President's Gold Cup Championships on June 22. JJ ran a first round 7.86-183.66 over George Reese and then set a short-lived 7.74 track record at 190.66 over Lew Arrington in the semis.
