Notes: The Condits had an OK year on the NHRA trail. They qualified #9 at Pomona at 6.279/226.13 but lost a close round one to Raymond Beadle, 6.18/238.72 to 6.260/236.22. At Indy, they were 5th alternate after making the maximum number of runs - 10! They were rewarded with a nice but non-qualifying 6.197/236.84. Dave qualified #11 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 6.24/235.60. He had trouble in the first round, and shut off to 7.51/118.42, while Raymond Beadle advanced with a 6.12/231. Dave failed to qualify at the NHRA World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway (times not reported). The team sold the body to Garth Hogan in NZ. | '79 Top Speed/Low ET at the March Meet, 6.14/234, out of shape against Dunn's Trans Am first-round. (ND). Qualified at the '79 Fallnationals. Notes: Dale Pulde drove the car in late 75 and early 76. Chapman Automotive ran iron block 426, then switched to Donovan. Pulde started his season at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race. All cars made three runs there. In his first race, his 6.87/155.44 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.60/218. He solo'ed in the second round with a 6.53, and in the third, he smoked the tires to a 7.19 loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.66. He also competed at the Irwindale Grand Premier race, where he qualified #16 with a 7.94. Unfortunately, he broke on his burnout in the opening round, giving eventual winner Bob Pickett a solo into round two. Dale qualified #12 at Pomona, 6.316/199.11, but lost in the first round, to Jake Johnston when he lost a blower. That was Dale's last NHRA national event appearance until the World Finals, where he showed up in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang.

Hedrick easily won the first two races with times of 8.83/173 and 8.90/163. Nick had motor problems and was unable to run the third race, so Terry soloed with an 8.24/181.08. Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for its third annual exhibition Car Championships. Hedrick was running well; he even stopped the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove in the semifinals with an 8.55/176.55. He faced the newly supercharged Comet of Ed Schartman in the final and lost to the Comet's 8.08. His next stop was at Irwindale for its experimental Stock Invitational race. Notes: John started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #11 and, in the first round, lost to John Collins. John failed to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.47/221.13 missed the 6.45 cut-off. He managed to get into the show when the #15 qualifier, Larry Fullerton, had a bad fire and could not run in eliminations. His second chance didn't help much as an off-pace 7.23/183.67 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.31/232 in the first round. He made it into the final at the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway, but he was late off the line, and his 6.62 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.66. His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.35/231.95 qualified #4. Force then made his way to his first NHRA National event final by running 6.40/223.32 in the opening round over Tom McEwen's 6.43/224. A semifinal 6.52/227.27 advanced when Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" failed to fire. This put him into the final against Kenny Bernstein. Unfortunately, John's transmission broke, and he slowed to 12.27/64.01 while Bernstein picked up his first NHRA Oscar with a 6.45/233. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Columbus for the Springnationals. A 6.34/230.17 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, he improved to 6.27/220.58 to beat Bernstein's 6.36/229. But in round two, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" had a tire-smoking battle that saw Colson's 6.61/225 win out over John's 7.58/126.76. Force was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car field. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.24/231.95 qualified #11. He beat Gary Burgin in the first round, and a 6.24/231 beat a tire boiling Tom Hoover in round two. Colson also boiled the hides in the semifinals, and John's 6.29/233 advanced. It was his second NHRA final of the year, and he faced a formidable competitor in Beadle. Force slowed to an off-pace 6.46/212.26 that finished second best to the "Blue Max's" 6.37/232. John was disappointed at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He failed to make the show; his 6.19/230.76 best was good for the fourth alternate. He also was unable to make the show at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. There he was the second alternate with a 6.32/224.46 best. At the NHRA World Finals held at Ontario Motor Speedway, the track was in rough shape. Force managed to qualify #6 with a 6.35/217.39. In the first round, his slower 6.70/222.22 beat Hoover's 6.65/229. A tire-smoking 7.23/217 beat Tom Ridings, who got out of shape in Joe Pisano's car in round two. The semifinals saw smoke city as both he and Tripp Shumake smoked the tires. Tripp recovered first to win with a 6.88/231 over Force's 6.99/218. John finished #8 in the NHRA Funny Car division for '79. Where was the 6.111 run? | I don't know anything about the 6.11, but Force did run 6.19 at a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race over local racer Paul Luppy in the 1st round. In the final, he beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore

Notes: Talk about a bad way to start your new year. John was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. On Friday the 13th, he crashed his Camaro into the guardrail during qualifying. He was OK, but the car was not as he failed to qualify. The damage was not too bad as he had the car running at Firebird Raceway at the end of the month for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He didn't reach the finals there, but he ran well enough to beat the "Hawaiian" with Mike Dunn onboard. He was one of four cars running at Sacramento's East-West meet, where he was declared the winner after beating Gary Densham, who had his reverser explode in the final. At Pomona, his 5.92/249.30 qualified #9. He and Kenny Bernstein had a close first-round race that saw Force's 5.89/247.93 come out on top over Kenny's 5.90/251. He got to solo in round two when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems. John advanced with a 5.92/249.30. In the semi-finals, he lost a tire-smoking dual with Al Segrini. He stopped at Carlsbad and drove the "L.A. Hooker" in an eight-car show but lost to Bryan Ranes in the opening round. The week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. His 6.19/239.36 qualified #6. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.54 in a loss to Segrini's 5.88. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.89/247.93. Once again, the car went up in smoke, but his 6.55/245.90 still beat Tim Grose, who blew an engine at 6.79/142. In round two, he lost to John Collins. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Qualifying wasn't a problem as only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Force ran 5.95 for the #5 spot in the field. In round one, a 5.96/242.55 beat Jim Head, but a 6.00/241 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.93/241 in round two. Things did not go too well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Force failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. In the first week of May, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors 32 car show. Denny Savage was supposed to run John in the final but he had hurt his engine and Gary Thompson took his place. It didn't make a difference to Force, who had set Low ET at 5.98 and then ran 6.07 for the victory. He then won the Bakersfield March Meet that was now held in May. He "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.98, but he beat low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round with a 5.95/245. He smoked the tires in the final, but his 6.49/239 held up to win over a crossed-up Tom McEwen. John also ran 5.80 at ADRA Eunice LA in 9/84, 5.92/245.90 at Gary US 30, and 5.94/252.80 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. Photo from Indy 1984. | Ran 5.76 over Jim Dunn's 6.02 at a Carlsbad match race in May 1984. Frazier and Force were surprising non-qualifiers at Indy, running 5.958/249.30 against a 5.939 bump spot. - Joe Moore

Notes: Stan ran well at the IHRA Nationals at Dragway 42 in August. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.60/221.13. An improved 6.52/212.76 beat a tire-smoking Ron O'Donnell, and in round two, his 6.36/220.58 took out Kenny Safford's 6.58/214 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He lost in the semifinals when his 6.61/200.44 fell to Denny Savage's 6.42/222 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." After such a good showing, it was surprising to see Bowman DNQ a week later (August 24) at the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. His best of 6.63 failed to make the eight-car show. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #4 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.244/226.13 (behind only Beadle, Prudhomme, and McCulloch). Unfortunately, he lost to Bob Pickett with this huge wheelstand in the first round, 6.43/229 to 12.83/70.20. That was the team's only NHRA national event this year.

Notes: Ran 6.34 at Pomona, 6.45 at Gainesville, 6.25 at Columbus, 6.31 at Englishtown, 6.15 at Indy, 6.26 at Detroit, 6.21 at Ontario. | Tom qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.34. Unfortunately, he lost to Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," in the first round. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.45 qualified #8, and once again, he lost in the opening round, this time to Bob Pickett. He was at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Dale Pulde. Shortly after that, he was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.98/138. In the first round, he improved to 6.43/223.88 to beat Al Bergler's 6.67/213. A 6.49/203.61 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Pulde who won with a 6.23/235. Tom went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event held in late May. On May 29, 22 cars ran the first-round, with only the four Low ET cars advancing into the semifinals. Prock didn't run quick enough to make the final four. The following day (May 30), they ran again, and this time six cars would advance. Prock almost made it as both he and Denny Savage ran 6.47, but Prock's was a tick slower at 6.476, and once again, he sat out the final eliminations. A week later (June 5), he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There, his 6.50/226.14 qualified #6. He ran 10.10 to advance in the first round, when Pickett lost a driveshaft and, in the semifinals, he ran a good 6.53/213.32, but it wasn't good enough as he lost to the eventual winner Beadle’s 6.46/210. The team's next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/228.42 qualified #10, but Prock lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. A week later (June 19) found the "Detroit Tiger" at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Prock qualified #5 6.62, but he ran a sub-par 6.97 in round one, that lost to Donnie Plunkett's 6.91. He did better at Union Grove on July 4th for the IHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.37 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. An opening round 6.63/204.54 beat Shirl Greer's 6.65/199. In the semifinals, Prock's 6.52/206.89 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.34/214.

Notes: Also ran 6.50 at Martin. | Tharp was at the AHRA Winternationals in January, but he lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher in the semifinals. He qualified #2 at Miami-Hollywood for the Funny Car Nationals with a 6.75, but failed to make the finals. The team failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals, but that was more due to horrendous track conditions. Miami held another Funny Car race late in February Tharp qualified #1 for the eight-car show and then beat Lou Azar in the "Fireball Vega" with a 6.84/205.01. In the semifinals, he had a close race with Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” Richard's 6.71/211.76 nipped Ron's 6.70/213. He faced "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and he ran a strong 6.70/215.82, but it wasn't strong enough to beat JJ's 6.65/216. In March, the "Max" was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Richard qualified #1 with a 6.87, but was upset in the first round, by Harlan Thompson's 6.96 to his 7.02. He was back in Miami for another Funny Car race in March where he qualified #4. Tharp lost in the semifinals. The team attended the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 at OCIR, but failed to reach the finals. On April 28 they were at Capitol for an eight-car show. Tharp was one of four cars that ran 6.50s. He made it into the final before losing to Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega. The following day (April 29), was a bad day for the "Blue Max" team. They were at Atco for a race, but Tharp had an oil line break and spray oil onto the headers. The Mustang body went up in frames. Richard bailed out of the flaming inferno at about 30 mph. He was OK other than a hurt shoulder from jumping from the car. Because of the fire, Tharp showed up at Rockingham on May 6th for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships driving a borrowed Mustang from Billy Meyer. The team used its own engine in the car. He qualified #11 for the show with a 7.63, but in the first round, they shocked everybody with an amazing 6.33 (Low ET) at 211.26 that beat Colson's 6.58/221. In round two he slowed to 6.82/221.67, but it was still enough to beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Tharp's run came to an end in the semifinals where the Mustang went into a wheelstand and lost to Foster's 6.44/225. He was still using Meyer's car on May 20 when the team showed at Muncie for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Richard qualified #1 with a 6.78 and then beat Danny Miller in the first round. A 6.71/217 got around Safford in round two, but in the semifinals, his 'chute fell off on the line and Foster soloed into the final. In June, Tharp was at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Colson. The "Chi-Town" bunch had problems as they broke a crank in the first race of the match. So, Tharp won the first race with a 7.14 and made two singles with a best of 7.15/203 to win the match. Things didn't go well at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where the "Blue Max" failed to qualify. Tharp was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he was there without a car, so he assisted Foster's team who went on to finish runner-up.

Notes: Pat drove the car at the Fallnationals and the World Finals. He ran 6.274/234.98 at Seattle to qualify #6 (setting Top Speed). In round one, he beat Tripp Shumake, 6.72 to 7.16 (speeds unavailable). In round two, Mike Miller broke on the line, sending Pat forward, but he fouled against Ed McCulloch in the semis, tossing out a 7.63/79 as the Ace motored to a 12-second win. Pat ran 6.244/230.17 for the #4 slot at the World Finals. He beat a broken Raymond Beadle in round one, with a shutoff 8.31/100. In round two, he beat Rick Johnson, 6.396/224.42 to 6.44/228. He had a heartbreaking loss in the semis. McCulloch broke on the line, but Pat crossed the centerline in taking his single and was disqualified. That reinstated McCulloch, who broke again in the final, giving Don Prudhomme the win. We need to confirm the 6.21.

Notes: Won three straight weekends at Lions and set a track record at 6.63. This car didn't get the recognition it deserved, beating a lot of the "name" drivers at the time. Stan ran at Irwindale's New Year's Day Funny Car Festival to start the season. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 7.28. In the first round, he beat Mert Littlefield with a 7.54/189.06. In round two, he got past a motor blowing Ron O'Donnell and in the semifinals, he beat Gene Conway, but blew his engine doing it and was unable to make the final. He was at OCIR for the first All-Pro event where he beat Conway in the first round, with a 7.10/204.54. Unfortunately, he fouled against Jim Dunn in the semifinals. Lions hosted the AHRA Grand American on January 10 and Shiroma made it to the final. He ran a 7.71 over Dick Harrell's Vega and a 7.12 beat Larry Arnold in round two. A semifinal 7.55 beat a tire-smoking Dunn and advanced him into the final against Gene Snow. The 'Cuda lost fire on the line and Snow singled for the win. At Pomona for the Winternationals. Stan qualified #6 with a 7.17. In the first round, he advanced with a 7.19/205.47 when Don Prudhomme broke. He lost in round two when the 'Cuda failed to fire advancing Snow. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he lost in the second round to Dunn. Still, in March, he raced at an eight-car show at OCIR. He lost to John Lombardo in the first round. On March 20 he was at Irwindale for the "Potpourri" race. He set Low ET at 7.17, but failed to make the finals. He was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race on March 27. He ran a strong 6.95/211.76 over Conway in round one, but in round two he lost to Dave Beebe. The "Skulker" caught fire on the run, but Stan was OK. He was back in business in April at an eight-car show at Lions. A first-round 7.05/189.47 beat Wendell Shipman and in the semifinals, a good 7.00/208.33 lost to Dunn's better 6.92/194. At the OCIR "Hang Ten" Funny Car race, Stan ran a 7.11/189.87 in the first round, over Densham's 7.24. In round two a 6.94/213.27 beat Bob Hawkins, but he lost to Rich Siroonian in the semifinals.

Notes: Blown fuel, Howell 109" tube steel chassis. A Feburary 3/1967, Drag News booking ad says the car ran 8.30/175, probably in 1966. Car was run into 1967, then sold to Dick Stokes, who ran it as an injected funny car on the UDRA circuit as the "Blue Bandit" into 1969. Don Gay, like Arnie Beswick, was a tried and true Pontiac racer. Dubbed the "Texas Teenager" by the drag racing press, Gay started racing stockers and super stockers when he was barely legal to drive out his father's Pontiac dealership. Don Gay's father not only bought racecars for his sons Don and Roy, he also bought Houston International Dragway. In 1964, the Gays built their first funny car out of a GTO. That car was replaced by an all-new 1965 GTO for Don and the old car was passed on to Roy. The Gays contracted famed racer Jay Howell to build the new car, an all fiberglass machine with a full tube chassis. The 421 Pontiac in the "Infinity" GTO was built by James Osteen, who was hired to oversee the Gay's racing operation. Don match raced regularly at Houston International and toured across the country. The beautiful GTO ran deep into the eights. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com) ET Irwindale CA 1966 (1/13/67 Drag News) MPH Dickinson TX 1966 (12/23/66 Drag News)

In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76/187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round, and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight-car show at Lions on February 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (February 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, a first-round win foretold the final. Gene's 7.33/200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28/181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis, a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27/201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50/194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35/201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37/189.47. OCIR held another eight-car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight-car event, a first-round 7.86/172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81/192.30 beat his 7.92/186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette Funny Car Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (Low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first-round 7.35/197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41/198.23 in the Invader. A semifinal 7.42/175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44/191.08, but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95/141 and 7.86/179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88/185.56 and an 8.13/153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR Funny Car 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42/198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round, on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's Low ET blast of 7.25/199.50 beat his 7.74/195.65. Snively must have had a hex on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round, and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54/188.28). A win came at a sixteen-car field at Irwindale on July 17. He qualified #1 with a 7.67/190.26 (Top Speed) and beat Dave Beebe in the final with Low ET at 7.63. He then won the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 25, beating Ray Alley in the final with a 7.65/181.81. On August 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships, he ran a 7.42/188.28 in the first round, and a 7.73/177.51 in the second before his car caught fire in the semis. Gene was OK. Conway fixed the car and installed a Crowerglide clutch set up with a Lenco two-speed transmission. With this set up, he showed up at OCIR on August 15 for their Anniversary Race. A first-round 7.27/188.28 beat Leroy Hales' 7.84/184. In the second round, a 7.33/194.80 beat Bob McFarland's 7.97/176 and in the semifinal, a 7.70/200 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.84/177. In the final, Gene ran his best ever speed and ET of 7.18/206.89 over Mike Snively's 7.30/203. On August 29 back at OCIR for an eight-car show, Gene ran a first-round 7.03/204.68 and a semifinal 7.10/202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12/205.47. A runner-up finish on September 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44/194.80 and 7.42/197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.26/204.54 to Gene's 7.45/177.51. On September 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42/181.81 beat his 7.61/132.74 in the first round. At the OCIR East-West Championships on October 10, Gene's 7.19/198.67 beat Snively's 7.30/205.01 in the West portion of the race, but for the overall title he lost to Don Schumacher. Conway had run a best of 7.09/201.34 at the race. Gene (7.23/184.80) lost to Dave Beebe (7.09/198.23) in the first round, at the next event on October 24 at Lions, followed by a runner-up finish to John Collins in John Bateman's Maverick at the Pumpkin Day Open at Irwindale. He qualified fifth with a 7.30 and ran a first-round 7.28/208.32 over Larry Arnold. A semifinal 7.37/205.46 beat Charlie Therwhanger, but Collins' 7.23/200.88 beat his 7.44/188.24 in the final. At Irwindale for a 32 car show on November 14, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Arnold's 7.09/208.80 (Top Speed) in the second round. Gene qualified fifth on November 21 at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.28/185.18 to beat a wheelstanding Randy Walls in the first round, before smoking the tires to a losing 15.50-58 in the semis against Bob Pickett who won with an 8.49/131. Gene failed to qualify for Irwindale's Toys for tots race. He had a streak of luck when number eight qualifier Larry Arnold broke and Conway got into the show. He almost went all the way, beating Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 7.29/196.05 and then beating Jim Liberman in the ailing "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with a 7.37/200.44. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don had been running in the sixes on every run and in the final it was no different as the "Snake's" 6.92/192 beat Conway who crossed the centerline. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed at 6.925/218.97. Assuming that was run in 1971.

Notes: Arnold's '72 car used a 114" Mike Leiby chassis. It weighed 1,850 lbs. The Ed-Pink Hemi produced 1,500 hp. On one of his earliest runs, he ran 6.69/218. Larry was at Miami-Hollywood on April 23 for the Florida State Championships. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #2. An opening round 6.88/190.27 beat Harry Hudson, and in the semifinals, Ed O'Brien fouled, so he ran an easy 7.90 to advance into the final. He faced Al Marshall in the "Tyrant" car, and Arnold set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.78/217.39 to claim the victory over Al's 6.94/208. A week later (April 30), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He beat Charlie Wilson in the first round with a 6.58, and a second-round 6.62 beat Sid Foster. He had a bit of luck in the semifinals when Richard Tharp had to shut down the "Blue Max" due to a cracked oil pan. Arnold ran a solo 6.83. In the final, he faced the tough Barry Setzer Vega driven by Pat Foster. Foster laid down an impressive 6.40/223 to get the win over the "Kingfish's" 6.76/214.24 runner-up effort. In July, Arnold was at Beech Bend for its Funny Car Invitational event. Larry qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.60/214.28, but in the first round, his 6.74 lost to low qualifier Don Schumacher's 6.45. Soon after that, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. There, his 6.66 qualified #6. In the first round, he beat Steve Tansy's 6.92 with a 6.64. An off-pace 7.85 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.51 in round two. The best NHRA national event times were 6.629 at Indy and 219.51 at Gainesville. Larry also ran 6.56 Tri-City. Where was the 6.45/225 run?

Notes: Won AHRA Winternationals 1972. | At the end of June through the July 4 weekend, I ran nine races in 14 days! Set the track record at Beech Bend at 6.45/220.04 over the July 4 weekend. - Dale Pulde, 7/3/15 | Pulde started the season with a win at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, but he had to beat the "killer car" of the day not once but twice to get the victory. Dale ran a 6.71 in the semifinals to beat Pat Foster's 6.72 in the bucks-up "Barry Setzer Vega." Leroy Goldstein won the other semifinal race but broke and could not make the final. That meant that Dale would race Foster again for the title. Dale won that final with a 6.68 over Pat's 6.85. The MT Pinto was at the Lions Grand Premiere race, and Dale beat Bill Leavitt's 7.11 in the first round, with a 6.79/215.82, but he lost in round two. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, once again, Pulde met Foster. It happened in the semifinals, and they both smoked the tires, with Dale's 7.57 beating the Vega's 7.78. In the final, he ran Ed McCulloch, and the Pinto lost a motor, giving Ed the victory. The team was at Lakeland on March 6 for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.96 qualified #6 in the field. He beat Charlie Wilson in the first round with a 7.02, and in round two, he beat a crossed-up Jim Liberman. A 7.15 beat Preston Davis in the semifinal, and he found himself in another final round. Unfortunately, he crossed the centerline in the final, and Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" won. Dale lost in the second round to McCulloch at the AHRA Pro-Am race at West Palm Beach. Pulde had one of the four cars competing at Chandler Raceway in Indiana late in April. He did well, winning his races and reaching the final round against Clare Sanders, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." Dale got the jump and looked like he had this one in the bag when the car suddenly got out of shape and almost went off the track and into the grass. He obviously had to shut it down and watch as Sanders roared past. He was at Rockingham on April 30 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It didn't go smoothly for the MT team, as they lost two engines. The second engine let go while winning his second-round race, and he could not run against Foster in the semifinal. Pulde was one of 22 cars attempting to qualify at the IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas. His 6.84 qualified #6, and in the opening round, he singled with a 6.70 when Charlie Therwhanger lost his 'chute on the line. In round two, he improved to 6.53 at 205.47 to beat Jake Johnston's 6.95/202, but in the semifinals, the Pinto lost a rear end, and eventual winner Tharp soloed into the final. The team's next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #13, and in his first-round meeting with Gene Snow, the car kicked off its blower belt while Snow made for the big end. He was at Rockford for the East-West meet, and it was an unusual 12-car show. Twenty-four cars attempted to qualify, and Pulde's 7.20 got him the #9 spot. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals there. Things went well at the AHRA Marathon Nationals in Marion County in July. There was even a little bit of lady luck riding on their side as in the semifinals, Don Prudhomme beat Pulde but lost a motor while doing it. In the final, Pulde was reinstated to run Leroy Goldstein driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. It was a close race, but Dale's 6.88 nipped Leroy's 6.89 for the gold.

Notes: Bill entered the '72 season as the quickest in the class due to his 6.48 run at Lions in December. There was nothing "trick" about the car; it used a 118" Byron Blair chassis. The engine was a '58 354 Chrysler Hemi punched out to 471 inches built by Leavitt. Internals included Crower cam, Howards rods, and Venolia pistons. Cragar supplied the blower drive, manifold, and headers. The injection was by Crower. A Lenco transmission transferred the power back to a quick change rear end. Leavitt had a good season in '72. He started it the right way by winning the New Year's race at Fremont. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #1 with a 6.75. An opening round 6.67 beat Ed McCulloch, and in the semifinals, Bill's 6.76 beat Gene Snow, who had a transmission failure. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and he set a track record of 6.64 in winning. Leavitt's speed on the run was 208. He lost early at the AHRA Winternationals, where Leroy Goldstein stopped him. He also lost early at the second OCIR All-Pro race, where he had problems in the first round, and shut off to a 10.96 loss to eventual winner Snow's 6.69. The following week (January 28), he was at Lions for the Grand Premiere event. Unfortunately, a first-round 7.11/169.17 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.79/215 in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (times not reported). He had Jim Nicoll's name on the side of the car there. That was Bill's last NHRA national event of 1972. Leavitt set a 6.47 track record at Atco and a 6.45 Maple Grove track record in July. Bill ran 6.818/196.50 at Tulsa PRA in September. Bill qualified #10 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown). In round one, he beat a broken Danny Ongais with a 7.27. In round two, Billy Meyer nipped his 6.87 with a 6.81.

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, Michigan, Popular Hot Rodding event in 1982. Kenny started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, his best of 6.20/236.22 failed to qualify, and he was third alternate for the show. He continued to have problems at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals where he was second alternate with a 6.18/221.12 best. He qualified #5 with a 6.26 in the eight-car field at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, but he failed to reach the finals. The next NHRA meet was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta that had an eight-car field. Kenny and crew chief Dale Armstrong had nothing, but problems and the best they could get the LN-7 to run was 12.19. Obviously, they failed to qualify. As bad as they were doing in NHRA events at the time, in IHRA, they scored a victory at the Pro-Am Championships on May 2. Kenny still didn't qualify so well, running a 6.21 for the final spot in the eight-car field, but he advanced past the first-round when Dale Pulde lost an engine on the line. In the semifinals, Bernstein picked up to a 6.06 to beat Al Segrini and move into the final where he faced John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting" car. Kenny repeated his qualifying time with a 6.21 to take the win. At the end of May, he showed at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car show and once again he failed to qualify. He qualified for his first NHRA event of the year at the Springnationals in June. His 6.04/236.84 got the #5 spot in the sixteen-car field. He almost made it to the finals as well, by stopping Tom McEwen in round one, with a 6.24 and in round two, beating Don Prudhomme. But his 6.32/223.88 in the semifinals lost to Segrini's 6.27/236. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.98 in the eight-car show, but he lost in the first round, to Gary Burgin. On June 27, Bernstein was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. He beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round, with a 6.17/226.13, but in the semifinals, he got out of shape, hit the guardrail, and coasted across the center line. He was OK. Things started going a bit better for the team by July when they showed up at Sanair in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 6.01 qualified #1, and he ran 6.08 and 5.99 to reach the finals against Prudhomme. The "Snake" won with a 6.03/245 over Kenny's runner-up 6.13/233.16 effort. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.93 qualified #4, and he lasted until the semifinals before losing to Prudhomme again. The next race on the NHRA tour was the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere. The "Budweiser King" qualified #3 in the eight-car show and in round one, he beat Garth Widdison. In the semifinals, he was late off the line and Billy Meyer's 6.19/223 beat his quicker 6.17/233.76. Kenny set a track record at US 131, Martin, Michigan, when he qualified #1 with a 5.90 at 247.25 for the PHR Championships. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Brainerd was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Segrini. Al won their race with a 5.97/238 over the "Budweiser King's" 6.25/196.30.

Notes: Pat Foster ran the "Damn Yankee" car at NHRA Dallas, Indy, and Ontario. At Dallas, he qualified #13 at 7.049/205.94. In round one, he lost to Rich Siroonian, 6.09/209 to 7.15/209.30. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he ran 6.632/221.67 to qualify #3 for the tough show, but in the first round, he lost an engine, and oil got under the rear wheels. He got way out of shape and almost crashed into his opponent, Dale Pulde, driving Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Pat qualified #7 at Ontario at 6.985/202.70. In round one, he lost a close one to Jake Johnston, 6.93/205 to 6.96/210.77. Woody Gilmore chassis.

Notes: This was definitely, 24-year-old Epperly's best season in fuel FC racing. The rookie was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Craig qualified #11 with a 6.22/233.16. His off-pace 7.20/132.74 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.15/224 in the first round. The team then went to Elroy Airport Drag Strip. This was Elroy's first-ever race, and traction was poor. Craig qualified #1 with a 6.99/211.76. He beat Richard Day in the first round with a 7.27/205.46. Rod Hynes got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, so Epperly's 7.65 advanced. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, but Craig smoked the tires and shut off to 9.86 while Jim got the win with a 7.01/216. Craig qualified #4 at Bakersfield at 6.324/231.95 and, in round one, beat Ed Moore with a 6.16/227.84. In round two, he advanced with an off-pace 6.59/202.24 when Gary Ritter had problems, but in the semifinals, something in the driveline broke, and Dale Armstrong got the win. He attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but a best of 6.20/225.56 left him as the third alternate for the show. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.42/215.31 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but a 6.52/221.67 in the first round lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover's 6.17/238. He did not race at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Another Western Regional race was run at OCIR on May 9. Craig qualified #4 with a 6.30/229.79. He made it to the final by beating John Lombardo with a 6.47/220.04 and Tom McEwen with a 6.17/227.27. Unfortunately, crew chief Amos Satterlee dialed in too much power in the final, and Epperly smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.01/167.91 that lost to final-round opponent Prudhomme's 6.56/227. His next race was on May 30 at Bandimere Speedway for another NHRA Western Regional event. In the opening round, his 6.64/151.51 beat Dan Lexa, but in the semifinal, his 6.62/220.58 fell to Gary Densham's 6.60/207. Then came his big win at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He had never even run there before. A 6.22/231.36 qualified #8, and he beat Tripp Shumake's 6.36/222 in the first round with a 6.27/224. He caught a good light in round two, and his 6.35/227 held on to win over Tom Anderson's better 6.32/228. In the semifinals, John Collins' 6.34/232 fell to 6.29/210. That put him into the final against the defending winner of this race, Raymond Beadle, who was driving the "Blue Max." Both ran 6.21 in the final (Craig at 231.95), but the win light came on in Epperly's lane. It was an amazing upset. After such a great race, he was surprised himself when he failed to qualify on June 27 at Sacramento for the NHRA Western Regional. He was the first alternate at 6.61/217.92. The bad luck stayed with him the following week (July 4) when he was the first alternate for the eight-car field at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. His 6.48/215.31 missed the 6.42 "bump." Craig did finish in the NHRA top 10.

Notes: Mark was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.41/284.90. He did not race at Arizona but was at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals. He qualified #1 at 5.05/295.85 and, in round one, ran 5.15/297.22 over Tom Hoover's 5.86/178. Whit Bazemore had problems in the second round, and Oswald ran 5.23/249.72 to advance. In the semi-final, a 5.18/292.77 dropped Del Worsham. He faced Al Hofmann in the final, and Mark ran his slowest run of eliminations, a 5.31/284.53 that finished runner-up to Hofmann's 5.20/293. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Mark qualified #4 at 5.21/250.97. Unfortunately, he lost to Bazemore in the opening round. He did not go to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. Confirmed best NHRA times at 5.053/297.22 at Houston Spring.
