Notes: Ran a questionable 6.49 and an impossible 6.25 at US 30, Gary, Indiana. | Bobby Wood was at Miami in January for a sixteen-car show. He qualified third and was running 6.9s, but he failed to reach the final. He was back at Miami on February 13 for its Winter Championships race. A 7.57/193.96 qualified #6 in the eight-car show, but he lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round. He was at Lakeland on March 6 for the IHRA Winternationals where his 7.17 qualified #11. Unfortunately, he fouled in the opening round against Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car. Wood then went to Atlanta for a best of three match race against Larry Arnold in the "Kingfish" 'Cuda. In their first race, Bobby caught Larry napping and his 7.20 beat the 'Cuda's quicker 7.03. Bobby wrapped up the match in the next race where his 7.10 won over Arnold ailing 11.20. Larry had some satisfaction in the last race as he won with a 6.87 when Wood fouled. Also ran 6.75 at Columbus. |

Notes: Dale was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he ran 5.465/274.39 to qualify #11. He improved to a 5.366/269.70 to beat Tom Hoover's close 5.37/275 in the first round. In round two, he ran 5.378/268.97 over Art Hendey's 5.66/225. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.89/235. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Dale ran 5.386/270.51 to qualify #7. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, 5.335/262.39 to 5.43/263, and in the second round, his 5.329/268.81 beat Hoover's 5.47/266. Pulde moved into the final by getting around John Force in the semifinals. It was a close race as both drivers ran 5.33 (Dale at 5.330/260.86, John at 5.334/274), but the "In-N-Out Burger" car got the win. In the final, Dale was up against the '89 NHRA Champ, Bruce Larson. Bruce had problems and shut off while Pulde motored to a 5.371/266.27 for the victory. The team also ran at Sonoma (5.665/262.46 Q16 and a first-round loss to Larson, 5.30/276 to 5.672/247.04), Seattle (5.703/262.92 Q15 and a first-round loss to Jim White, 5.44/262 to 7.30/112), and the Pomona Finals (5.672/261.39 second alternate). |

Notes: Howell was at Rockingham on April 19 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was the third AHRA Grand American race. He was the low qualifier for AHRA's "seeded" entries with a 7.35. His 7.52 defeated Malcolm Durham in round two, and in the semifinal, his 7.57 stopped Clyde Morgan. In the final, he faced Gene Snow, and Snow had run 7.16 while winning his semifinal race. Jay really needed to pick it up. However, it was not in the cards as Snow got the victory with a 7.14 with an early shut-off speed of 168 while Howell ran 7.45/193.54 for the runner-up honors. Jay drove this car at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.82/170 and in round two a 7.69/185.56 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.84/181. The "Snake" got back in on the "break rule." The two were to race again in the semifinal, but Howell blew his transmission on the burnout. Prudhomme advanced and went on to win the event. Jay was the Shop Foreman at Logghe Stamping Co. AKA Warhorse. Ran 7.15/199.87 in win at AHRA Detroit race. |

Notes: Larry was the low qualifier at Gainesville for the first NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.17/203.65. He beat Sid Foster in the first round, but his 7.21 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.10 in the second "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals. Shortly after that, he was at Miami-Hollywood for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.49/192.71 beat Leonard Hughes' very close 7.49/199, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.80/184.04 that lost to eventual winner Clare Sanders' 7.74/191. On April 5, he won over an eight-car field at Kansas City. Arnold ran times on 7.40/187, 7.37/197, and finally, a track record 7.30/199 to win. | He also ran 7.19 at KCIR on another date. The best NHRA times were the 7.176/203.65 at Gainesville. Where was the 7.08 run? Larry also ran 6.11 at Dallas, GA (900 feet). |

Notes: JJ ran the Nova at Irwindale on January 26 and at the NHRA Winternationals on February 1, where he failed to qualify. He raced on February 14 at Lions, but we are not sure in which car. Considering that he ran the Camaro the next day, I would think the Camaro was first used around the middle of February, starting at Lions. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Hoover was still racing his Monza at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9, but his 7.23/202 in the first round, lost to low qualifier Tripp Shumake's 7.08/211. His Corvette debuted at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, a best of 6.43/218.97 (first alternate) failed to qualify. He made up for it by winning the Green Valley Raceway Opener. There he had run 6.25/225 to beat Billy Graham's quicker 6.21 in the opening round, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.11/232.77 that defeated Gordon Mineo's 6.45. Graham got back into the show on the "break rule," and Billy was Hoover's final round victim. Tom's 6.15/232.77 beat Graham who's Monza got out of shape. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 with a 6.47/227. But in round one, he shut down with problems to an 11.29 against eventual winner Dale Pulde. The following weekend (March 19), he went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division Four opener. His 6.66/210.28 qualified #3. In the opening round, he beat Randy Lackey with a 6.72/206.42. A good light combined with a 6.80/205.47 beat low qualifier, Shumake's quicker 6.78/224. He then met up with Billy Meyer in the final. Meyer got the win, running 6.71/218 to beat Hoover's 6.81/204.08 runner-up effort. He was back at Green Valley on April 16 for the second NHRA Division Four race. A 6.29/223.32 qualified #3. Chip Woodall fouled against him in round one, and Tom advanced with a 6.40/214.79. But he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.97/91.00 in the semifinal that lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.26/215. On April 30, Hoover was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.50 and lasted until the semifinals before he smoked the tires and lost to Tom Anderson. He was at Tulsa the following week (May 7) for the AHRA Springnationals, where his 6.90/212.76 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A 6.81/214.28 in round one, beat Lee Beard, but in the semifinals, he and Shumake and a close race with Tripp's 6.71/218 coming out on top over his 6.73/216.34. His next stop was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where a 6.61/219.52 qualified #3. He beat Larry Gould's SOHC-powered Mustang in round one, with a 6.62/220.05 (Top Speed). He and Tom McEwen smoked the tires in the semifinals, with McEwen's 7.16 winning over his 7.25. The NHRA Springnationals did not go well for Hoover. Tom had just made a qualifying pass at 229 mph when his blower backfired. It caused the fuel tank to explode, and the car turned into a fireball as it continued down the track. The fire burned up all the oxygen, and Hoover felt that he would pass out. So at 40 mph, he bailed out the side window of the car. The car must not have been burnt bad as he returned to competition at Alamo Dragway the following week (June 18) for the AHRA Nationals. A 6.41/215 qualified #4, and in round one, his 6.48/205 beat Billy Graham. A 6.42 in the semifinals failed to beat McEwen's 6.36. His next stop was at Brainerd early in July for the US Funny Car Championships. On Saturday, he raced Don Prudhomme and his 6.52/220.58 lost to the "Snake's" 6.54/227. On Sunday, the eight cars raced for the win. Hoover's 6.41/214.83 defeated Lee Beard in the opening round, and a 6.35/229.00 beat Bob Pickett's 6.65/218 in the semifinal. Once again, he faced Prudhomme, but it was in the final for all the marbles this time. Tom led wire to wire with his 6.27/231.36 getting the victory over Don's 6.30/230 in a close race. At the Byron Funny Car Championships, he and Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" both ran 6.44 (Hoover at 230.17) in the opening round, but Colson got to the stripe first. He was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. And while he didn't win, he did run a best of 6.37 and set Top Speed of the meet at 222.70. Englishtown was the next stop on the calendar for the NHRA Summernationals. Hoover's 6.21/234.98 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he fouled against John Lombardo in the first round. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnational Molson. This was only an eight-car show, and his 6.20/228.42 qualified #3. But once again, he fouled in the opening round. This time he ran 6.41/229.59 while his opponent, Tom McEwen, won with a 6.23/225. The following week (August 12), found the "Showtime" at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars ran the first-round, with only the eight lowest ET's advancing into the first-round of competition. Hoover's 6.28 got him the #7 spot for the show. In round one, he improved to 6.25/224.43 to beat Rick Johnson's 6.34/207 in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.10/210 put Hoover's 6.32/190.27 on the trailer. August 20 found Tom at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.37/222.76 qualified #3. An opening round 6.50/226 defeated Jim White's 6.72, and a 6.39/225.00 beat Billy Graham's 6.51/216 in the semifinal. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final. In their race, Tom's 6.36/221.12 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.29/229. |

Notes: Did not NHRA in 1978. Where did Roy run the 6.20/227. Was that 1978 or 1979? | Roy was at Englishtown on May 7 for the NHRA Division One opener. In the first round of eliminations, his 6.63/203.33 lost to Bruce Larson's 6.50/220. He was at Cayuga for the next Division One race on May 21, but in the first round, both he and his opponent, Ron Colson driving the Hawaiian" broke, and they were both out of further competition. In June, he was back at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. In his first race, Dodger Glenn's 6.63/209 beat his 6.69/207.81, and in his second race, he got out of shape and shut off to 9.63 in a loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.35. |

Car went back to all blue, unsponsored in '86. | John qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.09/234.98. A much improved 5.82/243.90 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.73/247. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.89/240.51 qualified #10. Unfortunately, in the first round, Lombardo smoked the tires and shut off against Mark Oswald. John made it past the first-round at the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/244.16 meaning that he would face low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in round one. He got around Bernstein and also beat recent Winternationals winner Grose with a 5.93/244.16. In the semifinals, he broke a transmission and advanced Ed McCulloch into the finals. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway, Baton Rouge. A 5.95/222.49 got the spot. This time both he and John Force smoked the tires in their first-round race and Force's 6.07/237 came out on top over the "Blue Max's" 6.32/244.56. | At the NHRA US Nationals John qualified #5 with a 5.741/254.16. He would face #13 Qualifier Jim White in round 1 where Lombardo smoked the tires & watched White take the win. |

Notes: Jenner had nothing to do with this car. It was Ron Hodgson and Verheul. The car was new in 1980. Still, it was the same setup as the 1979 car, and it was an Al Swindahl Chassis Components car. There were two cars. One stayed in Canada and was pulled around to shows. The other one was a national event car. When we ran the tour deal in the NW (Portland, Boise, Edmonton, Seattle), we ran both cars and got twice the money. Frank Hall usually drove the local car. Leon Lippoldt - crew member | Qualified #6 at Bakersfield at 6.342/220.04. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, Bonin qualified #1 with a 6.68/223. A 6.65/219 beat John Collins' 6.77/216 in the first round, while he beat a tire-smoking Gary Densham in the semifinals. This put Gordie in the final against Kenny Bernstein. As you can tell by the times, traction was poor, and in the final, Bernstein set Low ET with a 6.54/214 to get the victory over Bonin's runner-up 6.68/202 effort. The team then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18 qualified #6. Unfortunately, they lost to Bryan Raines in the first round. As mentioned, they qualified #6 at Bakersfield for the sixteen-car show. But Bonin broke the tires loose in round one, and his shut off 7.15 run lost to Densham's 6.52/224. Everything lined up the following week (March 15) at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Gordie ran 5.97/245.23 to qualify #3 (tough show!) He ran an easy 6.24/237.46 to advance past a fouling Shirl Greer in the first round. A second-round 6.16/242.58 beat Fuzz Miller and a 6.12/243.24 in the semifinal beat Bernstein. In the final, he was up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was a good close race, but Bonin's 6.18/241.28 got the victory over Dale's 6.21/223. |

Notes: Strongest Chevy-powered Funny of '69. Ran a 7.60/191.88 at Englishtown in March. Set a 187.50 Maple Grove track record. On April 13, Larson faced Frank Oglesby for a match race at Cecil County. Bruce's 7.79/191.48 won the first race of the match when Frank's Cougar broke. Bruce made a second-round single to win the match when the Cougar couldn't be repaired in time. Another match race was run in April at US 131, Martin, Mich., against Ed Schartman. A first-round 8.29/187.88 beat Ed's 8.42/172.41. Larson had transmission problems in the second round, and Ed's 8.37/173.41 won. In the third round, Larson won to take the match. In May, he raced at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet Invitational but fouled against Mel Perry in the first round. On May 24, he raced Schartman's second car driven by Arnie Behling at Suffolk for a match race. Larson beat Arnie two straight with runs of 7.80/154.10 and 7.56/180.00 to win the match. He was at Cecil County the next day for their Funny Car Manufacturers Meet. Bruce set a track record 7.46 at 193 (Top Speed), but he didn't make it past the first round as he fouled against Jim Liberman. Bruce cracked off the 7.33 at Budds Creek, Maryland, on May 30. It was during a six-car show that he set the track record. He won his first-round race with a 7.95/187.88 over Schartman's 8.11/178. In the semifinals, he ran the 7.33/189.46 to beat Liberman's 7.92/185. This put him into the final against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus." A final round 7.84/187.88 won when Lew got crossed up and shut off to 9.16/157. In June, he returned to Maple Grove for another match race with Schartman. This time, he beat Ed three straight with a best of 7.69/187.88 for the track speed record. On June 8, he ran at the New England Funny Car Championships, where a first-round single (7.98) advanced when Pete Gates lost fire on the line. In the second round, Liberman's 7.61/190 beat his off-pace 8.22/189. Another match race against Schartman was run at York US 30 on June 21. A big holeshot by Ed in the first race gave the Cougar a 7.86/182 win over Larson's quicker 7.62. Bruce lost fire on the line, so Ed raced the backup car of Al Graeber and won, giving him the match race win, but Larson wanted a final attempt at a win, so they lined up for a final race. Sure enough, Larson got out of shape, and Ed's 7.95/180 gave him three straight victories. Bruce did much better the following week on June 28 at Budds Creek, Maryland, where he beat Charlie Allen two straight. At Capitol's King of King's Funny Car race on July 16, Roy Gay's 8.03/179.28 beat his out-of-shape 8.11/180.72 in the first round. At the Cars Magazine Funny Car Nationals on July 20, a first-round 7.61/189.46 beat Ron Rivero (7.72/190.66), but in the second frame, Arrington's 7.50/192 beat Bruce's 7.77/171.16. A big win came at Sunset Dragway's fifth annual Funny Car Championships, where he set a 5.09 eighth-mile track record before beating Schartman in the final of the ten-car field. A match race against Jim Liberman was run on August 2 at York US 30, where Jim beat him two straight with two 7.56s at 191. Bruce's best was a 7.65/189. At the US Nationals, he was the top qualified Chevy with a 7.43/195.22 (qualifying sixth). He had the Chevy fans screaming when his first-round 7.43/194.38 advanced when Schartman fouled. He upset Don Schumacher, who lost a transmission in the second round with a 7.35. The fans were on their feet for the semifinal race between him and Danny Ongais. But Larson fouled away a 7.48; Ongais' 7.27 would've been hard to beat anyway. On September 21 at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships, Paul Stefansky's 7.70/175 beat him in round two when Bruce lost third gear. On October 26, he won at Connecticut over an eight-car field, setting a 7.42 track record. He ran 7.42/194.38 and 7.50/196.50 before beating the Super' Cuda in the final with a 7.48/196.50. - Ron Howard | Ted Pappacena photo of the modern recreation of the car. |

Notes: Won Eastern Funny Car Showdown event at Fremont in October at 6.68/212.76 over Liberman (6.88/208.80). Lew Arrington ran 6.75 at the event. Info from local newspaper (The Argus). Report said Callier was in a Camaro, however. We need to confirm. We had a 6.71 listed for the Vega in 1971. |

Notes: Did the team race the blown fuel car this early? They still ran the injected nitro Cuda at Gainesville 3/72. We need to confirm if this was 1971 or 1972. |

Notes: Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Confirmed 7.95 at Cecil County. | Frank Federici continued to use his '67 car throughout the '68 season. A December '69 Speed and Supercar magazine claimed that the car had run a best of 7.60/203.87. Frank ran at National Trail on June 23. He made two exhibition passes. The first was an 8.24/180.72 that tied the former track ET record and set a new track speed record. On his second pass, an 8.12/181.44 reset both ends of the track record. On July 27 he made it into the final on Saturday at the Cars All-Star International at Cecil County. He had beaten Malcolm Durham earlier with a 7.95/187.10, but in the final, an 8.25/181.08 lost to Dick Loehr's 7.86/182. He didn't do as well on Sunday and failed to make the final rounds. Frank faced off against Bill Lawton at a best two out of three match race at Connecticut on August 4. In the first race, a 7.68/171 by Lawton beat his 8.58/167.28 and in the second race, he lost again when he broke a rear end giving Bill the match race win. | We formerly listed 7.895/195. |

Notes: Dick Loehr was one of many funny car drivers based out of Michigan. An engineer by trade, Dick used his job connections to get sponsorship and assistance for his racing operations. In 1967, Loehr had a new Mustang funny car built. The Max Curtis Ford "Stampede" was much lower than most of its competition. That car debuted with a 427 SOHC engine, later replaced by a reliable 392 Chrysler Hemi, Torqueflite combination. Loehr ran a best of 7.86 at 189.70 with the car at Orange County. The car was replaced by a new, lighter Mustang in 1969. Dick Loehr eventually left funny cars for Pro Stockers. - BS | Dick started the season on New Year's Day at Irwindale, where an 8.40 qualified tenth in the sixteen-car field. He ran a first-round 8.18/180 but lost to Don Nicholson's 7.99/172. At OCIR on January 14 for an eight-car show, he qualified seventh with an 8.29/177.86, but Terry Hedrick's first-round 8.28/182 beat his 8.43/168.22. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet, he qualified third with a 7.79/178.92 and ran another 7.79/176.12 over Mike Burkhart in the first round. A second-round 7.92/179.78 beat Kelly Chadwick's 8.44/162. He had an easy third-round win before meeting Don Nicholson in the semifinal. Both cars lost transmissions, but Don coasted across the line first. Shortly after that (February 4), he went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA did not have a Funny Car class at this time, so the cars had to qualify for Super Eliminator. Unfortunately, Loehr failed to qualify. On February 25, Loehr singled in the opening round with an 8.98/141 when Jack Chrisman had injector problems at the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An 8.14/169.17 beat a tire-smoking Clare Sanders in the second round. In the semifinal, he broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. On March 3, Irwindale held a sixteen-car show, and Dick's 8.21/180.72 qualified seventh. He lost a blower belt and the race in the first round when Fred Goeske's 8.03/182.18 beat his 8.23/153.74. A big win came at Riverside on March 24 for the HRM Championships. On April 13, Loehr was at OCIR for an eighteen-car show. All cars were to run the first round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. Dick's 8.30/175.78 beat Joe Pisano and advanced into round two. His opponent, Steve Bovan, broke, so he soloed with a 10.62. He faced Goeske in the semifinals. An 8.04/182.54 finished second best to Fred's 7.93/179. Another win came at OCIR for their Funny Car Team Championships on May 4. He ran as good as a first-round 7.86/188.66 before winning the final when Charlie Allen broke a rear end. He failed to win on May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, but he set Top Speed at 185.16. He was at Detroit Dragway on June 28 for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships, but an off-pace 9.90/132.35 lost to Pat Minick's 8.12/172 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Cecil County in July for the CARS All-Star International meet, Dick ran a first-round 7.79/179.28 over Dick Bourgeois' 8.38 and went on to win the final Saturday with a 7.86/182.54 over Frank Federici's 8.25/181. He was at an eight-car show in Gary, Indiana, on July 30. He ran 7.80/188 (Top Speed) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Pat Minick's 7.99/182 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, his 7.77/185.71 beat Ed Schartman's 7.92/160. He faced Don Schumacher in the final, and another strong 7.76/175.47 gave Dick the title over Don's 7.97/183. On September 1 at Minnesota Dragways for an eight-car event, Dick lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, Tom's 7.62/191.88 over Dick's (8.02/175.43). Another win came on October 5 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. On November 16, Irwindale held a Ford vs. Mopar Championships, and Loehr's first-round 8.08/177.86 beat Larry Reyes' 8.10/181.08. A second-round 7.87/188.67 beat Fred Goeske's 7.99/182.18. He lost his third race to Dave Beebe's 8.36/185.33 when he got up on two wheels and shut down to a 13.47. He won two of his races at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on December 1, running a best of 7.95/179.28 over Goeske. |

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip-top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip-top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. The car ran OK, registering high 7s. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. Charlie raced the car under the blue & silver Atlantic Dodge and Crenshaw Dodge banners in 1968. Allen collected a $2000 win at Irwindale at the 16-car experimental Stock Invitationals. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki). | Charlie was driving the "Crenshaw" backed Dart at OCIR on July 20. All eight cars ran the first two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Allen made sure he got into the final by setting Low ET in the first round, with a 7.60/184.80 that beat Dale Williams in Jess Tyree's Firebird. In his second race, he ran 8.04/188.28 to beat Dee Keaton's 8.34/177.51. In the final, he met up with Ray Alley. The two had a good race going until Allen's transmission failed to shift, and he shut off to 8.83/113.20 while Alley got the win with a strong 7.88/190. In Mid-August, he was at Mission Raceway in BC, where he set the track record down to 7.60. On a backup run, he ran 7.75. He set a 7.68 Irwindale track record in October. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed this car at 7.95. We need to confirm it was this one and not the new red Dart that went the 7.68. - BP |

Notes: Allen debuted his new Dodge Dart funny car sponsored by Crenshaw Dodge at Irwindale on Jan. 28. That began a season filled with match races against other "experimental stock" racers such as Fred Goeske, Gas Ronda, John Mazmanian, Kip Brundage, and Cecil Yother. He took funny car eliminator wins at OCIR and Irwindale. He also won the funny car eliminator title at what was billed as the North American Fuel and Gas Championships at Puyallup Dragway in Washington on June 15 against a 16-car field. Notes: Tom started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals for the second year in a row. He qualified #6 and, in the final, beat Don Prudhomme for the victory. Tom was hoping for a repeat at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but it didn't happen. He qualified #15 with a 6.200/230.76 and a 6.27/230.76 in the first round, beating Billy Meyer's 6.32. In the second round, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.32/234 to 6.92/150.25. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 at 6.201/225.56, and in round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.18/232 with a quick-leaving 6.247/229.59. In round two, he improved to a 6.126/233.76 but lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.06/227 in the "Blue Max." At the end of March, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division 4 race, but he lost to John White's 7.29/226 in the first round, with a quicker 7.09/219.51. Hoover set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Houston's third NHRA Division 4 race. There were only three FCs at the race, and Tom soloed due to his top qualifying spot and ran 6.37/225.56 to advance to the final against John White. In the final, Hoover's Corvette developed problems, and he shut down, giving White the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 6.10/236.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In round one, he ran 6.27/220.04 but lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.25/234. Hoover ran really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.20/231.95 qualified #8, and in the first round, he beat Roy Harris, 6.22/230.76 to 6.60/186. Another 6.22/227.84 in round two topped Rick Johnson's 6.25/236, while in the semifinals, his 6.30/224.43 advanced when Ed McCulloch had a header come loose and shut down. He faced Beadle in the final, and Tom smoked the tires to a runner-up finish to the "Max's" 6.09/235. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 6.51/209.80. He then went on to win by beating Dale Tuter and Henry Harrison before stopping Larry Fullerton in the final with a 6.63/212.27. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, choosing to go to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.11 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme's 5.92. But in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.89 that lost to John Collins' 6.29. He also didn't go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Things went his way at Union Grove on July 27 for the NHRA Division Three race. A 6.21 qualified #2, and he went on to win, running 6.24 in the final to beat Frank Hawley. Tom's next NHRA national event was Indy, where he qualified #3 at 6.021/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke on the burnout against McCulloch in round one. He qualified well at Seattle, hitting 6.045/230.76 for the second slot. But again, first-round troubles set in, and he shut off against Gordie Bonin in the first round. Tom's qualifying prowess continued at Ontario, as his 6.123/234.98 grabbed the #2 spot. He beat John Collins in round one, 6.173/221.13 to 6.83/188, but Raymond Beadle got him in round two, 6.13/237 to 6.32/222.27. |

Notes: Photo from 1980 Pop Rods, US 131 Martin, MI. Ran 6.12/234.37 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80 | Smith had one of his best seasons ever behind the wheel of Larry Coogle's Firebird. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.06/238.09. A 6.11/229.59 beat a crossed up Ed McCulloch in the first round. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. The following week (March 23), Paul was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a 6.31/230.76 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to Pulde in the first round. He won the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins in April, stopping Billy Meyer who broke in the final with a 7.05/217.91 (Top Speed). On April 27 Smith was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field that was tough to crack into as Don Prudhomme, Raymond Beadle, and Dale Pulde among others failed to do. But sitting in the top qualifying spot was the "Sting's" track record 6.02 at 238.09. Smith made it to the final by beating a tire-smoking, shutting off Kenny Bernstein with a 6.16/234. In the semifinals, his 6.22 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against Meyer. Paul had problems and shut down to an 8.21/108.00 that lost to Billy's 6.66/215. At the rain postponed IHRA Springnationals, Smith didn't have a very good outing. He qualified last in the eight-car field and a 6.37 in the first round, lost to Roy Harris' 6.30. He won the NHRA Divisional race at Gulfport International on June 1 and a week later he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.19/230.76 qualified #7. He lost to alternate John Collins in the first round. Paul was at Milan Dragway in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.19. He lost to eventual winner Meyer in the first round. Paul won the IHRA Summernationals at Bristol. He qualified #2 with a 6.23/234.37 just behind Meyer's 6.20/221. These two would work their way to the final. Smith started by running 6.48 over Mike Mitchell and in the semifinals his 6.42 beat Beadle who was driving the new Omni bodied "Blue Max." In the final, Smith's 6.55/221.13 got him and victory over Meyer's 6.65/227. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend, Paul's 6.47/226.70 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Dale Armstrong's 6.21/227. At the PHR Championships, Smith failed to qualify with a 6.37 (third alternate) best. He also lost early at the US 131 Funny Car Nationals in August where Tom McEwen beat him. Smith was disappointed at Indianapolis where his best of 6.12/234.37 failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals. |
