Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Qualified #4 at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.885-238.72. John was at Indianapolis for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.87-240.57. An off-pace 6.06-218.97 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.74-242 in the first round. He skipped going to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, going to Spokane instead for the ADRA World Finals. There he lasted until the semifinals before shutting off and losing to Gary Phillips. Martin was back on the NHRA tour for the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex but his 5.86-236.46 failed to qualify and was only good enough for third alternate. He ran much better at the NHRA Fallnationals, qualifying in the top half of the field with a 5.82-246.83 (#7). A first round 5.91-242.06 got around Jim Dunn but a 6.03-214.54 in round two lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.80-254. Back at Pomona for the season ending NHRA World Finals, he ran 5.77-250.00 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, on the run the blower exploded and it tore the body off the car. He was OK but was unable to run in eliminations and first alternate, Tim Grose replaced him in the field. Martin ran well enough to finish fourteenth in the NHRA points standings.

Notes: In mid-Sept, Collins faced Al Graeber's "Tickle Me Pink" Charger at Suffolk for a best of three match. The Maverick won the first two races and the match with times of 7.42, 195.22 and 7.34-205.00. They ran a third race, but Collins fouled and shut off giving Al the last race win. He was runner-up at Lions on Oct 24 for an eight car show that saw 25 cars attempting to qualify. He qualified and then beat Bob Pickett in the first round with a 7.19-189.47. In the semifinals, he advanced with an out of shape 8.13-153.06 when Dick Bourgeois shut off. In the final, he ran Dave Beebe. Collins tried hard with a 7.26, 196.93 but Beebe got the victory with a track record 7.07 at 193. John drove the Maverick at Lions on Nov 21 for an eight car show where he qualified #2 with a 7.11. He hurt the motor and was unable to run in eliminations. On Dec 12 he was at Irwindale's Toys for Tots race where he ran 7.39 to qualify #5. He shut off early in the first round and lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme.

Notes: In 1969 Gene Snow had R&B Race Cars build a narrowed Charger with direct drive and hired Jake Johnston to run the car on the match race circuit. Gene was one of the first funny car racers to seriously evaluate direct drive and was quite successful. Jake would drive the Blue Max in 1970 but would return to drive for Snow in '71 and '72. Molded in color like a boat.

Notes: Raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. Confirmed 7.68 at OCIR Also, 7.90-194.80 Low ET and Top Speed at OCIR Funny Car Championships. Dave was driving the "Beebe and Fedak" Top Fuel car until the end of July. On Aug 17, he showed up at Irwindale behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's "Super Chief" Dodge Charger FC. The race was between FC's and Fuel Altereds. In the first round, he ran an 8.21-186.72 that lost to Leon Fitzgerald's 8.11-184 in the "Pure Heaven." In the second round, he picked up to a winning 7.80-191.88 over a crossed up Gary Reed in the "Groundshaker." In the third race, he ran 8.32-190.66 that lost to Sush Matsubara's 7.78-192. It was obvious that the car could run. On Aug 31, he went to OCIR for a sixteen car show. Dave set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round with a 7.74-187.88 over Larry Barker's "Psycho" Mustang. In the semifinals, a 7.81-184.80 beat Gene Conway in the "Destroyer" Jeep at 8.27. Unfortunately, in the final, the transmission let go and Gas Ronda soloed for the victory. OCIR held a Fuel Altered vs. FC race on Sept 21. Once again Beebe was there. He beat Willie Borsch in the first round with an 8.35-187.50. A second round 7.95-183.20 beat Matsubara's 8.09, 197. And in round three, he made it a clean sweep by beating Fitzgerald's 8.17-189 with an 8.11-191.48. On Oct 5, OCIR held a 10 car round robin race. Beebe won two of his three races with a best of 7.95-189.06 while beating Fred Goeske.

Notes: Nicholson ran his Comet for the early part of '68. He started the season with a win at Irwindale for the New Year's Day meet. He qualified second with an 8.04 and ran Low ET of the meet in the first round when his 7.99-172.74 beat Dick Loehr's 8.18-180. An 8.04 and an 8.03 advanced Don into the finals where another 8.04 beat low qualifier Terry Hedrick. At Lions on Jan 28 for the AHRA Winter meet, Don qualified first with a Low ET of the meet 7.63 at 180.36. A first round 7.65-175.56 advanced when Joe Pisano broke a transmission. Another 7.72-180.72 advanced Dyno Don into the third round where his 8.02-169.85 beat Ronnie Runyan. In the semi's both Nicholson and Dick Loehr had transmission problems but Don won the coasting contest. He was to face Jim Liberman for the title but even though Jim gave him extra time to fix his trans, Don was not ready. Gene Snow was brought to the line to face Liberman again (he had lost to Jim in the semifinal). The starter motioned Gene to fire up and just as he did Nicholson's car came running out of the pits. There was quite a bit of yelling by officials, fans, and racers but in the end, Snow ran and lost to Liberman's strong 7.84. It was just a bump in the road for Nicholson as at the next race, the second annual Stardust Open, he qualified first with a 7.94 and set Low ET at 7.83 while beating Ed Schartman in the final. He then took on Terry Hedrick at a match race at OCIR winning the first two rounds with a best of 7.97-172.74 before smoking the tires and shutting down in the last race. On March 3 at Irwindale for a sixteen car show, he qualified second with a 7.99-180.46. A first round 8.09-149.49 beat Al Vanderwoude (8.45). A second round 8.00-169.49 just nipped Lew Arrington's 8.03 at a fast closing 183.68. A semifinal 7.88-182.54 over Ronnie Runyan came close to his 7.81 track record. He was to face Steve Bovan in the final but it was never run as a curfew ended the race. On May 30 he competed at the Olympics of Drag Racing at Union Grove but he lost a supercharger and went out early. A match race against Dick Bourgois in the Doug's Headers Corvair was run at Houston early in June and Don's first two runs of 8.24-161.89 and 8.66-153.55 were enough to beat Dick two straight. The Corvair's final 8.39-177 won the last race when Don shut off. By late June Nicholson was driving the Cougar which debuted at a match race at Capitol against Jim Liberman.

Notes: Photo from Martin, MI 1982. Tim qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.10-226.13. A 6.21-218.96 lost to Raymond Beadle's 5.97-243 in the "Blue Max" in the first round of eliminations. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.17-231.95 and in round one, his 6.26-231.95 beat Craig Epperly's 6.42-227. In round two, a 6.31-230.17 beat John Pott's off pace 6.95-181 and he advanced into the final by running 6.48-226.70 to beat Paul Smith in the semifinals. In the final he met up with the "Chi-Town Hustler" with Frank Hawley doing the handling. Tim had problems and shut down to a 7.53-109.89 while Hawley grabbed the victory with a 6.07-231. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Grose set low ET of the meet in qualifying first with a 6.10-231.95 but he failed to reach the finals. In April, NHRA held its Southern Nationals at Atlanta and it was a tough field to qualify in as there were only eight spots available. Tim qualified #2 with a 5.93-233.16 but in the first round he had trouble and slowed to a 6.74-221.67 that lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.49, 196.

Notes: On this car's very first run, we set a new track record at Detroit for ET and MPH. We raced at 14 events in 1971 and set track records at 11 of the 14 events. Later that year, I had the worst funny car fire in the history of drag racing to that point at Lebanon Valley, NY. I was burned over 60 percent of my body. I needed skin grafts, etc. I was laid up for a year. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6-08-15
