Notes: Kelly Brown initially drove Barry Setzer's first funny car in 1971. Finished runner up to Don Schumacher at NHRA Springnationals in Dallas. Brown also qualified at '71 Indy but went out early. Schumacher and Foster would later drive this car. Ran 227.27 after only three weeks in the sport -- at the time the fastest run ever. (Photo shows Foster's name, number). |

Notes: Hayden Proffitt was one the great racers of the 1960s. Proffitt won many races in Super Stock with a Chevrolet 409, then jumped to a Ford when they gave him a Comet A/FX. Proffitt built a Corvair funny car in 1966. The car began with a top, but it was cut off after the car wanted to lift at speeds. Proffitt got the car to run 8.49. In 1967, Hayden took over the Grant Industries Rebel SST funny car program. Proffitt hired famed Amos Satterlee to tune the large 439 C. I. AMC engine. The problems that original bunch had with the Rebel continued with Proffitt. The red car ran 8.11 at 180.85 before being retired at the end of 1967. In 1968, Hayden put the AMC Rebel body on an unused Logghe Stage II chassis he had. By the end of 1968, AMC dropped out of funny car racing and Proffitt retired from racing for a few years. Hayden returned to racing with a rocket dragster driven by his son Brad. Proffitt later drove the "Hot Streak" jet dragster. |

Notes: This car made its debut at the 1972 NHRA Nationals were it qualified fourteenth with a 6.617, 217.39. There were several magazine articles on this car and the March 1973 issue of Drag Racing USA states that the best recorded ET and Speed for this car was a 6.50, 224.50. At the 1972 OCIR Manufacturers Meet Al qualified for the Ford team and won all three of his races that evening. He and Billy Meyer were the only members of the Ford team that won all of their races, these wins insured that Ford won the "Manufacturers" team title. |

Notes: Terry Hedrick HUGE on side of car. AKA 'Super Shaker.' Hedrick drove Pete Seaton's Super Shaker Corvair in '67 and '68. In 1969, they built a new Chevy II Nova with a Logghe Chassis featuring independent front suspension. Early in the year Terry bought out Pete and renamed the car Terry Hedrick's Super Shaker. Same orange, black and white paint scheme. In 1971 Terry changed to the Camaro body shown here. By the end of the year I think he also joined the crowd with a 426 hemi. Speed of 228.42 was originally listed, but seems too fast for 1971. Need confirmation. |

Notes: This restyled-for-'68 Skylark replaced the previous '66 iteration. It remained early hemi powered. Pellegrini recounts that the Romeo Palamides-built frame was not a successful idea. the upper and lower rails were intentionally not welded together to allow for more chassis flEx. The flEx made it difficult for Pellegrini to steer and he ended up barrel-rolling it at 175 mph at Rockford (IL) Dragway shortly after its debut. According to Pellegrini, he decided that he would be a car owner, but no longer a driver, at that time.(Iconic trees and cornfields in background of photo show this to be Union Grove, WI, oldest continually operating dragstrip in the U.S.) -- RT |
