Notes: Blown fuel, 113" AWB, glass body, 427 Cammer, C-6 trans combo in rectangular-tube frame by Holman & Moody. Started 1966 season in injected fuel Fairlane. Then built this Mustang, first running it on injection with fuel, then blown alky, finally blown fuel. These times are blown fuel. This car debuted at the NHRA Springnationals in June, it ran as a CC/FD. At the U.S. Nationals in '66, Darrell ran 8.88-161 and an 8.77. Darrell ran a best two out of three match race against Bobby Woods at Biloxi on May 14. The blown Mustang won the first race with a 9.30-140.34 but Droke fouled in the second race. In the final race for the match race win, Darrell's 8.99-149.50 beat Wood's Chevelle.

Notes: Photo taken at the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ran 6.65 at Pomona, 6.47 at Indy. | Sush ran at the Irwindale Grand Premiere on Jan 12. He won his first round race with a 6.68-219.51 (top speed), but in the semifinals of the eight car show, he broke against Don Prudhomme. Sush qualified #3 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.39. In the first round a 6.46-211.76 beat Henry Harrison. Unfortunately, he broke on the line in the second round. At the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.65-218.44 qualified #15. A first round 7.10-198.23 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.52-220. The team failed to qualify at Bakersfield. On April 6, they were at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American. Unfortunately, Matsubara lost to Gene Snow in the first round.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1984. | Tim started the season with a runner up finish at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, both he and Steve Chrisman lost traction but his 6.72 beat Steve's 6.86. In round two, he advanced when Frank Hawley and severe tire shake and crossed the centerline in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, a 5.95-241.93 beat a tire smoking 6.97 by Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His final round 6.03-247.93 finished second best to Al Segrini's 5.96-234. He set low ET in qualifying first at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.78-238.72. Unfortunately, he blew a motor in the first round and his 6.79-142 lost to John Force's tire smoking 6.55-245. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, he qualified #4. A first round 5.94-241.28 beat John Collins and he got past the second round to face Billy Meyer in the semis. There, a 5.99-243.90 lost to eventual winner Meyer's 5.88-247. He qualified for the tough eight car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. That was good; what was bad was that he qualified in the #5 spot, setting up a first round meeting with low qualifier Oswald, which Grose lost. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals on June 10. Tim qualified #6 with a 5.90-247.25. He fouled in the first round against Gary Southern. Grose then went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 6.01 qualified #6. He lasted until the second round before losing to Dale Pulde. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.87-253.52 but failed to reach the finals. The Summernationals at Englishtown was NHRA's next stop and once again Tim qualified easily, running a 5.81 for the #7 spot in the show. He beat Dale Barlet in the first round but smoked the tires in round two and lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max."

Notes: 1976 was an outstanding year in terms of performance for the Frantic Ford team. The Mustang II ran a best of 6.253, 224.39 mph at Capitol Dragway in April, won the prestigious Dutch Classic, the Winston points race at Englishtown, the Funny Car Nationals at York, and made it to the semifinals of the NHRA Summernationals losing to Don "The Snake" Prudhomme. Notes: Conway qualified seventh with a 7.95 at the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 19 and he improved to a 7.79 in the second round before losing to Dave Beebe in the semis. At the OCIR Anniversary Race on Aug 9, Conway lost in the first round with an off-pace 8.18-139.53. His times were improving with a 7.64-185.36 run on Aug 16 at Irwindale. He competed at the Drag News Nationals at Lions on August 30 but was having handling problems with the car. He lost in the first round to Jim Adolph's 8.13-167 when the car again refused to go straight and slowed to an 11.65-67.97. On Sept 1, Irwindale held an eight car show and Gene qualified first with a 7.67. He set top speed in the first round when his 7.76-194.38 lost to Ray Alley's low et of the meet 7.58-190. Fortunately for Gene, Alley broke and he was reinstated but it did him little good as the Corvette broke a rear in the semifinals. The car was then running mid pack, losing early on Sept 6 at OCIR with a 7.88 best and failing to qualify on Sept 21 at Irwindale. Gene turned it up a notch, cracking a 7.40-184.80 at Lions on Oct 25 for the East-West Championships. Back at OCIR for the Manufacturer's meet, Conway qualified with a 7.69 and won his first race with a 7.67-191.08. A semifinal finish and a 7.55-198.66 best came next at Irwindale's big 32-car show on Nov 23. The car almost caught the Corvette curse at Lions the following week on Nov 29, when it caught fire on the line in round one. Yet on Dec 6, Conway returned to OCIR to run his best time of 7.37-181.08. He broke in the semifinal. He went back to Irwindale on Dec 14, where he failed to qualify.

Notes: Successor to Lenarth-Wolford's "Secret Weapon" Jeep. Aiming to circumvent the NHRA's "no roadster" rule for AA/FC, Lenarth based the 120", aluminum-bodied funny on the convertible Jeep Commando. Initially ran direct-drive but went to two-speed trans late in year. Four-page feature in 10/69 DRM. -- RT | On March 22 at Lions, 22 cars showed for an eight-car field and Ed's Jeep just got in with an 8.19 on the bump. A first round 10.81 advanced over a troubled Ronnie Runyan but against Ron O'Donnell in the semis he lost a motor and watched Ron's 7.88-189 advance. At a sixteen car race at Irwindale on April 26, Ed again made it into the semis beating Dale Armstrong (8.29-170) in the Travelin Javelin with an 8.20-185.18 and a second round 8.26-177.86 over Steve Bovan's Mister T Camaro (8.93-175.09). In the semifinal against Mike Van Sant's Invader, he smoked the tires and lost while Mike ran 7.71-191 to win. At Lions on May 10 for an eight car race, Ed qualified seventh then put a big holeshot on Runyan for a first round win. He lost in the semis. Ron Leslie beat Lenarth's Jeep in the first round on May 30 at Irwindale for another eight car show. The next day (May 31) at OCIR for the FC 500, Ed qualified last in the sixteen car field at 8.42 and he fouled against Leslie in the first round. At the OCIR Benefit race on June 14, Ed qualified fifth with an 8.02 but Gary Gabelich's 8.26-187 in the Beach City Corvette beat him in round one. At the AHRA Grand American Championships at Lions on June 21, he again lost in the first round with an 8.06-178 losing to Van Sant's 7.84-170. It was getting harder and harder to make a brick fly but Ed was determined so on June 28 at an eight car show at Lions he qualified sixth with an 8.00 and again lost to Van Sant in the first round. Mike's 7.63-196.07 in the Invader beat Ed's 7.93-185.18. OCIR held its Nitro Championships on July 5 and Ed qualified fourteenth but fouled against Larry Fullerton in round one. On July 19 at OCIR for the PDA Championships, Ed's 8.32 qualified thirteenth but Gas Ronda's 7.92 beat his 8.15 in the first round. On July 26 at Irwindale against Bob Smith in Tom Sturm's Corvair he lost a blower belt and the race. On Aug 2 at an eight-car show at Lions, he again lost in round one but his losing time was a much-improved 7.75-194.80. Gary Gabelich's 7.56-178.57 beat him. On Aug 9, he ran a first round 7.75-179 over Gene Conway (8.18-139.53), and a best ever of 7.67-187.11 over Bob Smith (8.02-157.89) to make it into the final against Dave Beebe at the OCIR Anniversary race. In the final the Jeep broke and Beebe ran an uncontested 7.61-197.36 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda for the win. Back at Irwindale for a sixteen car meet on Aug 16, Ed's first round 7.87-165.44 beat Rusty Delling (7.92-167.39) but he fouled against Gabelich in round two. At Lions on Aug 30 for the Drag News Nationals, Ed ran a 7.74-186.33 over Ray Alley's 8.40 in the first round but the Jeep broke and couldn't be repaired in time for the second round and Alley was reinstated. And it did fly. On Sept 6, he qualified third at OCIR for an eight car race and a best ever 7.52-182.55, good for low et of the meet, beat Fullerton in the first round. A 7.65-171.10 beat Bob Smith in the semis and when Mike Van Sant's Invader burned enough that it couldn't appear in the final a reinstated Smith faced the Holy Toledo for the money. There Ed ran a 7.80-166.05 to pick up the win. Just prior to a Lions FC race on Sept 13, Ed installed a two-speed transmission in the Jeep. At that event, he failed to qualify in the top eight but they held a bracket two funny car race for cars that had failed to qualify in the top eight. He won that bracket by running a 7.74-168.22 and a 7.66-184.04 in the first two races. In the final, a 7.75-182.55 won over a crossed up Gervase O'Neil in the King Rat. At Irwindale on Sept 21 for an eight-car show, Ed qualified fifth with a 7.88 but lost to Gas Ronda's 7.72-193.54 in the first round. Another first round loss came on Oct 11 when he fouled against Don Schumacher at the OCIR FC Invitational. On Oct 25 at Lions for the East/West Championships, Ed ran a great 7.37-197.36 in the first round to beat Gene Snow (7.50-148.51) but broke on the line in round two. On Nov 2 he qualified fourth on the wacky racers team with a 7.63 at the OCIR Manufacturers' meet. Ed fouled away a 7.74 in his first race and slept late on the line against Marv Eldridge in round two when Marv's 8.01 beat his 7.59-191.08. He won his third race when Dale Armstrong crossed the centerline. On Nov 23, Irwindale held a 32 car show and Frank Pisano's 7.65-192.70 beat Lenarth in the first round. On Dec 6, OCIR held an eight car show and qualifying was tough. Ed ran a 7.76 and it was only good enough for sixth alternate as Frank Pisano was on the bump with a 7.51-195.65 in his Corvair. -- RH

Notes: Roger qualified ninth with an 8.01 at the HRM Championships but Danny Ongais' 7.50-180.00 (low et) beat his 8.11-181.08 in the first round. At Lions on June 28 for an eight car show, he qualified seventh with an 8.21 but lost to Gary Gabelich's 7.51-184.80 in the first round with an off-pace 8.99-118.42. On Aug 16 at Irwindale for a sixteen car show, Gene Conway (7.64-185.36) beat Wolford in the first round but with the break rule in effect, he was reinstated. It did him little good as he fouled against Gabelich in the second round. At Lions on Sept 13 for an eight car show, Rich Siroonian set low et of the meet in the first round with a 7.29-194.80. Wolford was in the other lane and his 7.62-188.67 lost. The following week (Sept 21) at Irwindale for an eight car show, he failed to qualify. Another eight car show was held at Irwindale on Nov 1. Roger's 7.66 qualified fourth. A first round 7.71-194.80 beat Rusty Delling's 7.71-188. Dellings got back in on the break rule when Pete Bagnard had his blower lift and take the roof off his car. So the two met again in the semifinal but this time, Delling's 7.82-185 beat Roger's 7.84-191.08. On Nov 7 for the OCIR Manufacturer's race, Roger qualified fourth on the GM team with a 7.79. He blew a motor in the final round but still won when Ed Lenarth fouled away a 7.74. Notes: Ran 7.63 at Lions. | Ed started the season at Irwindale's New Year's Day race where he lost in the first round when he got out of shape against Don Hampton in the Beach City Corvette. On Jan 26 he fared better at an eight car show, again at Irwindale. His first round 8.47-171.10 beat a crossed-up Bob Pickett but a second round 7.87-185.18 lost to Ken Safford's 7.62-196. On May 2 at OCIR for the Big Four Championships, Ed advanced past round one when Bill Lerner fouled. In round two he beat Wendell Shipman but in round three, Mike Snively's 7.21 low et of the meet beat him. Back at OCIR on May 30 for the Funny Car 500, Ed's first round 8.10-151 advanced when Gary Densham fouled away a 7.87-182. He lost to Snively in round two when he lost an engine. On June 20 for the March of Dimes race at OCIR, Ed race a first round 7.97-155.17 and a semifinal 7.72-194.38 that lost to Arnie Behling's 7.67-199. Another showing came on July 11 at Lions for the AHRA Grand American race. He singled with a 7.80-188.67 in the first round when the Wild Breed broke on the line. But he fouled against Roger Wolford in round two. He lost fire in the first round on Aug 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships. On Aug 15 at OCIR for their Anniversary Race, Ed ran well, running a first round 7.58-180.00 over Mert Littlefield's 7.80. In the second round a 7.64-181.81 beat Arnie Behling's ailing 7.99-171 in John Mazmanian's Cuda. He lost to Gene Conway's 7.70-200 in the semis with a 7.84-177.51. Another first round loss came on Aug 29 at OCIR for their doubleheader where Snively's 7.33-204 beat Ed's off-pace 8.72-179.64. He broke on the line against Snively in the first round of an eight car show at Irwindale on Sept 12. At Lions Anniversary Meet on Sept 26, Lenarth ran a first round 7.42-181.81 over Gene Conway's 7.61. But in the semis against Frank Rupert he had drivetrain trouble and was unable to run. On Nov 14 he lost to Dick Custy's 7.37 in round one with an 8.08-195.22 at a 32 car show at Irwindale. He ran his best ever of 7.12-200 in qualifying fourth on Nov 21 at Lions for an eight car show. He bogged badly against Mike Van Sant's 7.32 and ran a losing 8.19-150 in the first round.

Notes: Raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. Confirmed 7.68 at OCIR Also, 7.90-194.80 low ET and top speed at OCIR Funny Car Championships. Dave was driving the "Beebe and Fedak" Top Fuel car until the end of July. On Aug 17, he showed up at Irwindale behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's "Super Chief" Dodge Charger FC. The race was between FC's and Fuel Altereds. In the first round, he ran an 8.21-186.72 that lost to Leon Fitzgerald's 8.11-184 in the "Pure Heaven". In the second round, he picked up to a winning 7.80-191.88 over a crossed up Gary Reed in the "Groundshaker." In the third race, he ran 8.32-190.66 that lost to Sush Matsubara's 7.78-192. It was obvious that the car could run. On Aug 31, he went to OCIR for a sixteen car show. Dave set low ET and top speed in the first round with a 7.74-187.88 over Larry Barker's "Psycho" Mustang. In the semifinals, a 7.81-184.80 beat Gene Conway in the "Destroyer" Jeep at 8.27. Unfortunately, in the final, the transmission let go and Gas Ronda soloed for the victory. OCIR held a Fuel Altered vs. FC race on Sept 21. Once again Beebe was there. He beat Willie Borsch in the first round with an 8.35-187.50. A second round 7.95-183.20 beat Matsubara's 8.09-197. And in round three, he made it a clean sweep by beating Fitzgerald's 8.17-189 with an 8.11-191.48. On Oct 5, OCIR held a 10 car round robin race. Beebe won two of his three races with a best of 7.95-189.06 while beating Fred Goeske.

Notes: Nicholson ran his Comet for the early part of '68. He started the season with a win at Irwindale for the New Year's Day meet. He qualified second with an 8.04 and ran low et of the meet in the first round when his 7.99-172.74 beat Dick Loehr's 8.18-180. An 8.04 and an 8.03 advanced Don into the finals where another 8.04 beat low qualifier Terry Hedrick. At Lions on Jan 28 for the AHRA Winter meet, Don qualified first with a low et of the meet 7.63 at 180.36. A first round 7.65-175.56 advanced when Joe Pisano broke a transmission. Another 7.72-180.72 advanced Dyno Don into the third round where his 8.02-169.85 beat Ronnie Runyan. In the semi's both Nicholson and Dick Loehr had transmission problems but Don won the coasting contest. He was to face Jim Liberman for the title but even though Jim gave him extra time to fix his trans, Don was not ready. Gene Snow was brought to the line to face Liberman again (he had lost to Jim in the semifinal). The starter motioned Gene to fire up and just as he did Nicholson's car came running out of the pits. There was quite a bit of yelling by officials, fans, and racers but in the end, Snow ran and lost to Liberman's strong 7.84. It was just a bump in the road for Nicholson as at the next race, the second annual Stardust Open, he qualified first with a 7.94 and set low et at 7.83 while beating Ed Schartman in the final. He then took on Terry Hedrick at a match race at OCIR winning the first two rounds with a best of 7.97-172.74 before smoking the tires and shutting down in the last race. On March 3 at Irwindale for a sixteen car show, he qualified second with a 7.99-180.46. A first round 8.09-149.49 beat Al Vanderwoude (8.45). A second round 8.00-169.49 just nipped Lew Arrington's 8.03 at a fast closing 183.68. A semifinal 7.88-182.54 over Ronnie Runyan came close to his 7.81 track record. He was to face Steve Bovan in the final but it was never run as a curfew ended the race. On May 30 he competed at the Olympics of Drag Racing at Union Grove but he lost a supercharger and went out early. A match race against Dick Bourgois in the Doug's Headers Corvair was run at Houston early in June and Don's first two runs of 8.24-161.89 and 8.66-153.55 were enough to beat Dick two straight. The Corvair's final 8.39-177 won the last race when Don shut off. By late June Nicholson was driving the Cougar which debuted at a match race at Capitol against Jim Liberman.
