Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1979. Don was trying to get his fifth straight NHRA Funny Car Championship in '79. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, he qualified #4 with a 6.13. But in the first round, he fell off to 6.32 at 201 and lost to Billy Meyer's 6.18/241. At Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener, he qualified #1 but lost early to Pat Foster. The season was not starting so well for the "Snake." Things went better at Gainesville for the Gatornationals in March. A track record 6.15 at 243.90 qualified #1, and he beat Bob Pickett in the opening round. In round two, his 6.31/236 beat Meyer's 6.37/236. Unfortunately, he went up in smoke in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. Surprisingly, Don did not go to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the Springnationals. He qualified poorly (#13) with a 6.29/236.22, but he picked up to 6.21/228.42 in the first round, to beat Meyer's 6.68/170. In round two, Prudhomme's 6.31/222.22 lost to Al Segrini's 6.20/226. He did not run at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.09/240.64. But in round one, he was late off the line, and his 6.26 lost to Ron Colson's 6.28 in the "Hawaiian." He made a trip to Martin, Michigan, for the NHRA Division 3 race. Don qualified #2 with a 6.08, just behind Gary Burgin's 6.07. These two would meet in the final. Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed during eliminations with a 6.02/240.00. In the final, a 6.16/236.84 gave him the victory over Burgin's 6.30/215. He showed up at Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race in early July. He had the only Funny Car there, and he singled for the win. He also stopped off at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Don qualified #1 at 6.26 and then ran 6.24/231.95 and 6.23/234.37 to reach the final. His final-round opponent was Dale Pulde driving the "War Eagle," who had run Low ET at 6.12 during eliminations. Don smoked the tires and slowed to a 6.85/178.21 runner-up finish to Pulde's 6.28/236. He then went to US 131 and won their Funny Car Nationals. Prudhomme had run as well as 6.10/237.46 before stopping Frank Oglesby in the final. Another win came at the PHR Championships. In the final, his 6.24/228 beat Pete Williams driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." The wins kept stacking up as he then won the NHRA Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.21/234.98 qualified #3. The first-round saw him pick up to 6.12 over Roy Harris' 6.35. A semifinal 6.19 took out Burgin's 6.40. The final was against Pulde, and this time the "Snake" reversed the outcome of the PHR meet by winning with a 6.63 over Pulde's 6.69 in a tire-smoking battle. He didn't run so well at Byron, where he lost to Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car in the first round. But he really showed them up in Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Don reset the NHRA ET record to 5.95 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 245.23. A first-round 6.18/215 beat Pulde, but the car went into a wheelstand in round two, and Prudhomme had to shut off against Colson. Shortly after that, he was at Jackson County Sports Park for the NHRA Division 6 Final. He made it into the final only to lose to Raymond Beadle's 6.16/237 in the "Blue Max" with a 6.36/195.50. Going into Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, Beadle held a 324 point lead over Prudhomme for the championship. Don had to act fast. He qualified #2 at Seattle with a 6.08/243.24. A first-round 6.13/226.70 advanced over a tire-smoking Kosty Ivanof. Meyer also smoked the tires against him in round two, and Don's 6.32/215.82 moved into the semifinals. There he was upset by Jim Dunn. Jim had been running really well, and in the semis, his 6.17/223 beat Prudhomme who dropped a couple of cylinders at 6.26/223.88. Don had to watch as Beadle went on to win the race. He got some payback at the Winston Challenge race held at Fremont on September.30. Both he and Beadle made up the Funny Car final. It was close as the "Snake" had run 5.99/242.58 in his semifinal race while the "Max" had run 5.98. It was close, but Don's starting line advantage got him the win with his 6.07/236.22 narrowly beating Beadle's 6.06 at the same speed. That was the last highlight of the year as at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Don was off-pace. He only qualified #11 with a 6.43/227.84, and in the first round, his 6.85/229.59 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.53/229. Still, most was happy with a season like this, and he maintained his hold on the second spot in the NHRA points. | At NHRA Seattle, Snake and his Arrow appeared at the JC Penny Firestone behind the mall. - Joe Moore

Notes: This Corvair would have been Ralph Nader's worst nightmare if he had seen it. Michigander Pete Seaton was one of the first match bash funny car racers. The "Seaton's Super Shaker" '67 Corvair was, in fact, his fourth funny car. The new Chevy was built by the Logghe Bros. At their Logghe Stamping Company. A 427 Chevrolet Semi-Hemi powered the car and was backed by a Torqueflite transmission. Terry Hedrick was chosen to drive the wild Corvair. Hedrick's seat of the pants driving style was awe-inspiring to the funny car fans of the sixties. The Corvair garnered many wins while touring the country in 1967 and 1968. Terry won one day and was runner-up the next at the 1967 AHRA Drag World Super Stock Championships at Wichita, Kansas. Was this Corvair unsafe at any speed? Nah. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday, Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki). - BS | He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day Meet where he qualified #1 with an 8.01. A first-round 8.03 advanced him past a fouling Marv Eldridge. He made it past the next two rounds to meet Don Nicholson in the final. An 8.04 by Nicholson put Terry in the runner-up spot. On January 14 for OCIR's eight-car show, Hedrick qualified third with an 8.24/170.77. A first-round 8.28/182.18 beat Dick Loehr's 8.43/168. But in the semi's he was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. On February 25 he raced a best two-out-of-three at OCIR against Nicholson. Don's 8.03/166 and 7.97/172 beat Terry's 8.39/176.12 and 8.36/178.21. He did win the last race with an 8.29/178.57 over Nicholson's shut-off 13.21, but Don won the match. The two met again on April 6 for another best of three match at New York. This time Terry evened the score by winning the match. He won the first race with an 8.00/184.04 over Don's off the track 11.58. Nicholson came back to win the second race with a 7.79/166 over Hedrick's 8.04/182.18. But in the final race, the Corvair set both ends of the track record with a 7.75/185.18 to beat Don and win the match. The next day (April 7), he was at Detroit's Anchorville Motor City Dragway to race Sid Foster's Mustang in a best of three match. Once again Terry set a track record, this time it was an 8.09 at 178. He beat Foster three straight. Nicholson wanted another shot at Hedrick and he got it on May 5 for a best of three at Detroit. Don was now running his new Cougar. Hedrick won the first race with an 8.08/177.51 over "Dyno's" 8.36/164. Nicholson came back to win the second race with an 8.15/171 over the Corvair's 8.16/175.43. But Terry came through to win the match with an 8.09/177.86 to beat Don's shut off run. On May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships he failed to win, but he did set Low ET at 7.80. At Pittsburgh in May, Terry set both ends of the track record with a 7.84/180.36 while winning the Pittsburgh Funny Car Championships over Jim Liberman. A final round 7.92 beat Jim's quicker 7.88. On June 28, Terry was back at Detroit Dragway for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show. Hedrick beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" in the first round, with an 8.29/173.07. In round two, a 7.83/179.64 beat Leonard Hughes' 7.94/182. But in the semifinals, against Roger Lindamood, he got out of shape and went into a ditch along side the top end of the track. It damaged the front end pretty good, but Terry was not hurt. Don Gay met up with Terry on August 4 at LaPlace for a best of three match. Terry took the match two straight with runs of 8.02/182.92 and 7.99/178.82. Hedrick got his biggest win of the year on August 18 at New York National for the AHRA Nationals. He ran times of 7.60 (Low ET), 7.63, 7.67 and a final round 7.68 over Dick Harrell for the title. At Minneapolis on September 1, a first-round 7.89/180.36 was wasted when he fouled against Pat Minick (9.00) in the first round. Another match race against Nicholson was run at New York with the "Seaton Shaker" winning the match with a best of 7.75. He lost in the first round, again at Suffolk for an eight-car show when he got crossed up against Mel Perry. On September 29, he was at Windsor Dragway for a best of three against Lindamood. Terry won all three races with runs of 7.79/181.80, 7.77/184.04 and a final 7.93/179.64. On October 6, he won the AHRA World Finals at Kansas City International. Lakeland International held their Fuel Funny Car Championships on October 20 and Hedrick was there. He won his first-round race with an 8.39/179.64 over Terry Ivey's new Torino, but in the second round, he lost a torque converter and the race to Henry Garcia. - Ron Howard

Notes: Three successive class bests in 1973: 6.35 and 6.27 at Indy (won Funny Car Eliminator over the Ace in the final), then a fantastic 6.16 at the Supernationals. When Don didn't like his new '74 US Army Vega, this car was pulled out of the garage, painted in US Army colors, and won Indy again. 6.29 Green Valley | In 1973, Prudhomme singlehandedly won the team title for Plymouth over a 16-car field at the 5th Annual Manufacturer's Meet at Rockford, Ill. - RT | Photo from 1973 AHRA Grand Nationals, Dragway 42. | Early in '73, Don was still racing his Top Fuel car. He didn't enter his Funny Car in competition at the AHRA or the NHRA Winternationals; he ran in Top Fuel instead. But on March 11, he showed up at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals with his 'Cuda. He qualified #9 and, in the first round, set Low ET of the meet with a 6.45 to beat low qualifier Tom Hoover who ran 6.56. In round two, he faced Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega panel. Don fouled away a 6.60/209.30, giving Brown an easy 7.09 run into the semifinals. The following week, he was at NHRA Gatornationals but was back in the top fuel car. He was back in the Funny Car for the Seattle Northwest Open in April. He ran a 6.43 to qualify, but in the first round, he lost a rod while doing his burnout. On April 11, he was at the AHRA Grand American in Tulsa. A Low ET and Top Speed of the meet pass of 6.50/226.13 qualified #1. He had a clutch explode during eliminations and hit the guardrail, thus ending his day. The car was wearing black primer from being repaired when he showed up at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships on April 21. He set Top Speed at 230.76, but after making a first-round solo, he crossed the centerline and was disqualified while racing Gerry Glenn. The following week, he was in Seattle for its Northwest Open. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.54/229 (Top Speed), but while doing his burnout for his first-round race against Rich Rogers, a rod let go, and he had to shut down. There were no shortages of places for Don to run as everywhere he raced, a crowd followed. He was at Green Valley for the AHRA Grand American early in May. He qualified #1 at 6.37 and then beat Mart Higginbotham and Dale Pulde (MT Grand Am). He then defeated Don Schumacher in the semifinal with an engine blowing 6.29. He would face Tom Grove in the final. Grove's car failed to fire, so Prudhomme limped it down the track for the win.

Also, Don was runner up to Paul Stage's AA/C in Super Eliminator (pre-Funny Car Eliminator) at '68 Indy Nationals. - Danny White | Nicholson's early-season '68 car was destroyed in late July in a collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle, according to the 7/26/68 edition of Drag Times. Crewmembers Jim Campbell and Wally English were returning Nicholson's car to Detroit following the Super Stock Nationals. The impact threw the Cougar over the cab and onto the roadway, demolishing it. English was killed in the collision; Campbell was injured but recovered. - RT | The Cougar debuted at a match race in May against Jim Liberman at Capitol. During a time trial run, he broke a timing chain, and he was unable to run in eliminations."Dyno" showed the world that he was still one of the top dogs in Funny Car racing when he showed up at Milan, Michigan on July 7 for a match race against "Fast Eddie" Schartman. Nicholson won all three races. His times were 7.66/184.04 and 7.70/182.18 in the first two races. But he really showed 'em in the last race with his 7.48/185.86. The following week (July 13), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Supercharged Invitational race. In the first round, Malcolm Durham fouled against him at Don advanced with an 8.11/165.74. He lost to Lyle Fisher's 8.19/180 in round two with an ailing 8.36/116.88. But due to the "break rule," he got back into the show for the semifinal. Once again, he faced Fisher. Lyle failed to fire this time, so "Dyno" soloed at 11.66. He met Larry Reyes in the final, and the 'Cuda had him covered, running 7.54/192 for the win over Don's 8.05/181.80 runner-up effort. - Ron Howard

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | John Force started his '89 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #2 with a 5.37, but failed to reach the finals. John set Low ET while qualifying #1 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.32/277.26. He lost in round one, with a 5.46/275.22 that finished second best to Tom Hoover's 5.39/260. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, his 5.26/277.52 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's strong 5.19/265. Once again, he lost to Hoover in the first round. Gainesville was NHRA's next stop for the Gatornationals. Force qualified #4 with a 5.36/276.92. This time, Chuck Etchells stopped him in the first round. He finally got past round one at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #10 with a 5.57/255.75. He beat Art Hendey in the first round, and in round two a 5.48/273.14 beat Hoover. His semifinal 5.55/268.01 lost to upstart Eric Reed's 5.51/259. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, he broke in round two and lost to Mark Oswald. He ran well, qualifying #8 with a 5.42/274.72 and improved to a 5.41 first-round win over Paul Smith. Oswald got him again at the next NHRA event, the Cajun Nationals, where Mark stopped John's tire smoking car in the first round. Force qualified #10 with a 5.57/267.61. By the seventh race of the NHRA season, the Springnationals, John was hoping his luck would turn around. It didn't. A 5.37/273.05 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to alternate Jim White. He was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 25. A 5.55/268.17 qualified #6 in the field. He beat Etchells in the first round, with a 6.06/177.97. But in round two, Oswald's 5.60/256 beat his 5.63/263.00. He qualified #7 with a 5.39/276.15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, but a 5.54 in round two lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.36. The next NHRA event was the Mile High Nationals in Denver. Crew chief Austin Coil tuned the car to a 5.70/250.00 in the thin air to qualify #7 in the show. John beat Richard Hartman in the first round, but in round two his 5.70 lost to Oswald's 5.64. On July 30, John was running at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.45/274.22 qualified #7 in the field and he improved to 5.42/273.72 to beat Jim Murphy in the first round. In round two, his 5.51/272.97 beat Tony McCallum's 5.57/258. Unfortunately, in the semifinals, he ran into a hard running Prudhomme who strapped a 5.35/268 on John's 5.50/271.65.

Notes: Consistently fast machine with a stock stroke motor. Won 1977 IHRA Dixie Nationals and World Nationals. Set 245.23 NHRA Record at Martin MI on 8/77. Stood through 1979, at least. Dale ran 6.24 at Pomona, 6.29 at Columbus, 6.36 at Englishtown, and 6.16 at Indy. | If I had to choose the season Pulde was most successful, it was a toss-up between '77 and '85. It would go to this "War Eagle" car for sentimental reasons. Pulde started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3. A 6.25 in the first round beat Jake Johnston, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. He went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ran 6.24 to qualify and finished runner-up to Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. The final was very interesting as Pauling had his Monza's fiberglass body come up the chassis, and he ran 13.70. Pulde had been high-tailing his out-of-shape car to an 8.55 but was said to have crossed the centerline and was disqualified. There was almost a fight as crew chief Mike Hamby argued with track personnel and Pauling about the finish. Mike said the car touched the line but did not go over it. Regardless, the decision stood. Another runner-up finish came at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Dale set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.14/234.37 before losing to Ken Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He won the NHRA Division 3 points race at Indianapolis and the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he set Low ET at 6.24 before beating Tom McEwen in the final. Another win came his way at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race held there. He beat Chuck Finders in the final with a 6.22/236.22 (Top Speed). His next win came at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on June 5. He had beaten Jerry Boldenow and Safford to reach the finals, where he stopped Ray Sherman for the title. Bristol was the team's next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Pulde qualified #2 with a 6.45. Another 6.45 at 227.27 beat Safford in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.39/222.22 beat Denny Savage's 6.42/224. In the semifinals, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.28/233.76, covering Johnny White's ailing Mustang. He went up against Larry Fullerton in the title round. Fullerton's Mustang broke, and Pulde legged it to 6.30/233.76 for yet another win. It was off to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals on July 4. A 6.33 qualified #2, but in the first round, he and Fullerton both smoked the tires, with Larry's 8.23/152 winning over Pulde's 9.45/107.91. The following week (July 10), the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde only qualified #14 with a 6.36/234.98. In the first round, his 6.46 lost to Sherman's 6.33. Two weeks later, Pulde was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he reset the IHRA Funny Car speed record to 241.28. The funnies were flying here, and Dale qualified #2 with a 6.21. He then beat Shirl Greer and Tom Prock to reach the final, facing Burgin. The two had an amazing race, with Pulde running 6.09/241.28 only to lose to Burgin's 6.08. He made up for his runner-up finish by winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron Dragway on July 31. He qualified with a 6.80/222 and then set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.37/235.60 (track record). In the final, all he needed was a 6.67/191 to beat a tire-smoking Bill Pryor at 7.22/194. That was followed by a win at Englishtown's Eighth Annual Funny Car Race of Champions on August 4. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.47/234 to beat Gordon Mineo in his first race, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.34/236 beat a fouling Burgin in his second race. His final-round opponent was Arnie Swensen, who had gotten the second-lowest ET with a 6.42. Dale got the victory with another strong run of 6.35/235. A couple of days later (August 7), he was at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Nationals. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals before the car broke on the line, advancing eventual winner Dale Emery into the final. A week after that (August 14), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he reset the NHRA Funny Car speed record to 245.23. It was another sixteen-car field, and Pulde set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.00/247.93 over John Pott. He "slowed" to 6.20/240 in round two to beat Ron Colson's 6.52 in the "Hawaiian," and a semifinal 6.13/245.23 beat Bob Pickett's 6.21. In the final, he went up against Burgin. Pulde had difficulties and slowed to a 15.22 in a runner-up finish to Burgin's 6.61/231. Dale qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/240.00 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships on August 21. But he boiled the tires in the second round and lost to Emery, who would win in Mike Burkhart's Camaro.Pulde qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA U.S.Nationals, but he fell off to 6.56/225.56 in the first round and lost to Al Segrini's 6.39/225.

Notes: In Jan, Johnson was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.83/245.23. He was up against Paul Smith driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the first round. Rick went into some hard tire shake and shut off. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85.

Notes: Al was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.45. His opponent, Kenny Bernstein, got out of shape in the first round, and Segrini advanced. Unfortunately, Al's engine was ailing, and he could not run eventual winner Gordie Bonin in round two. He won the New England Spring Funny Car Championships in May, running a best of 6.05/231. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.127 (Low ET) at 234.37. A first-round 6.16/230.76 beat Bonin's 6.58/187. He continued to run well in round two, with his 6.20/226.70 beating Don Prudhomme's 6.31/222. He had a small fire on the line in the semifinals and had to shut down, advancing eventual winner Gary Burgin. Englishtown was a stop that he would rather forget. He was there for the NHRA Summernationals. He had made a qualifying pass and stopped the car. He attempted to shut the engine down, but it wouldn't shut off. Oil got onto the headers, and the car caught fire. Al bailed out, and the car started idling down the track on fire. No worry, the concrete retaining wall was easily able to stop this flaming mess. It did. The car was then rebuilt and stolen the day after. Not sure if it was recovered, but Segrini was driving for Castronovo at the NHRA Grandnationals. Segrini qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.21/229.59. An opening round 6.19 beat Bernstein's 6.25, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a losing 6.86 while Dale Pulde's 6.72 in the "War Eagle" advanced into the final. He won the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Al set Low ET at 6.15 and a troubled 7.22/189.87 in the final beat an even more troubled Roy Harris at 9.50-78. Segrini went to Indy with high hopes for running well at the NHRA US Nationals. But he made a dozen passes attempting to qualify, with the best being a 6.14/234.98 (second alternate). The problem was traced to two bad fuel pumps. Shortly after this, he won the New England Funny Car Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.00/238.71 and a 6.11/235 beat Bruce Larson in the final. He scored another big win at the IHRA Nationals at the end of September. There, he stopped Burgin in the final. His next stop was at Atco for their Funny Car Spectacular. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, Segrini beat R.C. Sherman with a 6.45/217.39. But in the semifinals, he shut down to 9.77/84.58 in a loss to Harris' 6.71/212. AKA Utica Flash. Al ran 6.127/234.98 for best NHRA national event times.

Notes: This car made its debut in August and made shakedown runs at OCIR before heading east for the NHRA Nationals. At Indy Don used consistent low seven second times to capture his first NHRA National Event. He beat Leroy Goldstein (Ramchargers) in the final 7.001/214.79 to a losing 7.14/211.26. | Don debuted this car at OCIR on August 29 for an eight-car show. He ran really well, qualifying #1 with a 7.02/211.76 (Top Speed and a track record), well ahead of Mike Snively's 7.19 in the #2 spot. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.93 (track record) at 210.28 to beat alternate Johnny Wright in the "Fiberglass Trends" Javelin. Unfortunately, on that pass, Don shelled a rear axle and was unable to compete in the semifinals. A week later (September 7), he got his big win at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. Things didn't start out so well as on a Thursday qualifying attempt, Don lost a motor. But after installing a new one he qualified with a 7.07 and in the first round, his 7.17 beat Leonard Hughes quicker 7.10. In the second round, he ran another 7.07 at 210.28 to beat Jay Howell's 7.64/152 in Don Prudhomme's 'Cuda. Schumacher picked up to a 7.01/212.26 in the semifinals to beat Bobby Rowe's 7.18/205 in the "Super Duster" and in the final, he was just a tick of the clock away from the "sixes" with a 7.00/214.79 (Top Speed) that beat Leroy Goldstein's 7.14/211 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger for the title. It should also be noted that Schumacher had hired back his former crew chief, John Hogan, to help with his new car. | Best NHRA time was the 7.001/214.79.

Notes: This car was a late season replacement for the '70 Duster which burned in a trailer fire while on the road. Runner-up to Gene Snow at '70 NHRA World Finals in Dallas, car ran 6.86/214.79 at that race. | After the Duster burnt in the trailer on the way home from the Seattle WCS race on August 22, Whipple and McCulloch had to ready a new ride. On September 12, Ed was driving his new 'Cuda at Capitol for the Funny Car Grand Prix.

Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1989. Jim replaced Johnny West as the driver of Roland Leong's "Hawaiian" entry for '89. The team started the season by qualifying #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.43/258.24. Jim cut a good light in his first-round race against Mike Dunn and his 5.46/258.10 beat Mike's better 5.42/269. In round two he beat Art Hendey with a 5.55/216.50, but as can be seen by his speed, he hurt some parts and was unable to make his semifinal race against Bruce Larson. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, the team qualified #13 and lost to Larson in the first round. White qualified #8 at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but once again he was on the trailer after the first-round. Things went even worse at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where the team failed to qualify. The "Hawaiian" was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. Jim qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.54/251.32, but he smoked the tires to a 6.33/181.96 in the first round, that lost to Tony McCallum's 5.76/247. The team continued to have trouble qualifying for NHRA fields. At the Springnationals, White was first alternate with a best of 5.58/260.11. He managed to get into the show when #15 qualifier McCallum had a blower explode and destroy his T-Bird. Jim beat John Force in the first round. In round two, Kenny Bernstein smoked the tires against him and Jim's 5.70/253 advanced. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. The NHRA tour then shifted to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.64/237.52 qualified #11. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.63/78.78 that lost to Larson's 5.49/265. After that, it was back to the US at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The "Hawaiian" qualified #2. A 5.63/248.75 advanced past R.C. Sherman in the first round, but the Daytona broke on the line in the semifinals against Doc Halladay. The following week (July 9), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals where they again failed to qualify. White qualified well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals with a 5.68/255.53 for the #6 spot. He beat Gary Densham in the first round, before losing to Larson's 5.65 with a 5.78. It seemed as though the team found something as at Sonoma they qualified #5 with a 5.40/268.41. He beat Dale Pulde in the first round, with a 5.67/258.74. Jim then had problems and shut off to a 10.69 that lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.38/268. The good runs continued when at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. Jim qualified #3 with a great 5.33/266.98. A 5.48/253.16 beat a tire-smoking McCallum in the first round, and in round two, his 5.50/258.77 beat Jim Murphy. He was in the semifinals at an NHRA national event for the third time this season, but once again the gremlins stepped in and he broke against Larson. On August 13, he was at Martin, Michigan, for its Wolverine Nationals. It was an eight-car show and all cars ran two runs with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Jim ran a 6.03/246.21 in his first race over Ronny Young, but in his second race, he smoked the tires and shut off. His ETs were not good enough to advance to the final. His next stop was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.45/267.69, but he slipped to an off pace 7.51/111.85 in the first round, that lost to R.C. Sherman's 5.68/256.

Notes: Baddest dog in the land. Ran quickest and fastest times in the class in Round 1 at Ontario 72 (6.294). Then ran 6.30/235.64 in Round 2 and 6.31 in Round 3. Lost in finals to Jim Dunn when Pat redlighted. Earlier in the year, Foster had a blower explosion at Lions in May, hit the guardrail and destroyed the body. They put a new body on it and repaired the chassis at Buttera's. | Ran 6.59 Low ET at OCIR Funny Car 500. Also ran 6.47 at OCIR 72. Featured prominently in the movie Funny Car Summer. Pat was the number one qualifier at 6.36 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2, but the chutes tangled, and he went into the sand trap, damaging the car beyond repair. Omer Carruthers took his place in the field.

Notes: Billy had a strong year in '84. He won three races in NHRA and another three in IHRA and finished second to Mark Oswald in the NHRA Funny Car points chase. He also ended the season with the second quickest Funny Car time ever, a 5.628 at the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol. In January, Billy started the season by qualifying for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway with a 5.96/225.00. He beat John Martin in the first round with a 6.02/200.89, but he broke an oil line and advanced Tom McEwen in the semifinals. As good as he ran in NHRA, he started the year by failing to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.07/234.98. A new Plueger-built Mustang debuted in March, and it qualified #3 at Atlanta's eight-car field on March 11 with a 5.94/232.55. His 5.93/228.42 advanced when Al Hofmann broke in the opening round. In the semifinal, he and Kenny Bernstein had a great race that saw Meyer's 5.81 (Low ET) at 248.61 defeat Bernstein's 5.87/252. He faced Gary Southern in Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the final, and Gary went up in smoke while Meyer ran 6.02/223.88 for the victory. He qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.93/243.90. A first-round 5.85 beat Frank Hawley's 5.91 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In round two, a 6.17/226.70 got around Al Segrini, but in the semifinals, both he and John Collins smoked the tires, and John's 6.45/216 beat Meyer's 6.44/239. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.90 qualified #4. His 5.92/221.81 beat Ron Correnti in the opening round, while a 6.14 advanced in round two. In the semifinals, his 5.88 lost to McEwen's 5.89. Then things began to click, starting with the NHRA Southern Nationals. He won four straight races (two NHRA and two IHRA) and averaged 5.83 for 19 runs in those events. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.78/249.30 and went on to win over Kenny Bernstein in the final with a track record 5.73/252.80 over Bernstein's 5.80/254. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) and beat Oswald in the final for the $31,000 purse. The next win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In the first round, Billy qualified #8 in the eight-car show but beat a tire-smoking Bernstein with a 5.94/250. In the semifinals, he soloed to a track record 5.81/246 when Dale Pulde could not appear. He took his third win in the final with a 5.92/249.30 over Jim Head's 6.01/245. The crown jewel of this four-race winning stretch came next, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 3. He beat low qualifier, Don Prudhomme, in the first round and then Sherm Gunn in round two with a 5.86/236.84. And in the semifinals, a 5.81/243.24 beat Denny Savage. In the final, he faced Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird and won with a 5.776/252.10 over Mark's 5.97/251. The win was worth a record $41,500. In comparison, the two NHRA wins were worth slightly over $10,000 each. His good run ended the following week (June 10) at the NHRA Springnationals. Although he qualified #1 with a track record 5.81 at 249.30, he lost in the first round, with an off-pace of 6.27/207.31 that lost to John Force's 6.06/242. He made another $10,000 at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified #2 with a 5.84/250.69 and beat Ed McCulloch in the final with a 5.85/247.25. At the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 8, he ran horribly; his 6.49/157 qualified last in the sixteen-car field, and a tire-smoking shut-off 10.09/71 lost to McEwen's 5.88/245 in the opening round. A week later, he did make the finals at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.88 qualified #12, and he burned several bearings on his 5.85/240 in the first round that beat McCulloch's quicker 5.82/252. The team installed a new engine for round two, where his 5.88 beat Mike Dunn's 6.15. In the semifinal, his 5.79 took out Hawley's 5.85. In the final, he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," and his 5.97/248.61 lost to Beadle's 5.95/247. He lost early at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, and the week after that, he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Meyer qualified #1 and lasted until the second round before losing to Oswald. Billy ran a confirmed 254.95 at the NHRA World Finals. We assume the 255.68 is an IHRA time. It seems legit, but we need confirmation. Photo from Indy 1984.

Notes: One of the biggest surprises at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona in '86 was Oswald's not qualifying for the show. His best attempt yielded only a 9.56/87.89. That was nowhere near the 6.09 "bump spot." The team then went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark was still not running up to par, qualifying #7 with a 6.61/237.46. A first-round 6.38/247.93 (Top Speed) beat Billy Meyer, who shut off, but in the semifinals, he shut off and lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86 (Low ET) at 236. In Gainesville, things went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mark ran a 5.70/263.00 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. In the first round, an even better 5.65/259.36 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." In the second round, it was Oswald who smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.96/49.71 that lost to Ed McCulloch. Due to a rain delay, the Gatornats were run the same weekend as the IHRA Winternationals, so obviously, they didn't run the Darlington race. But they did make IHRA's second event, the Bayou Nationals at Louisiana Raceway Park. Oswald qualified #1 and beat McCulloch in the final for the victory. He lost to Jim Head in the first round, at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta after qualifying #2 with a 5.72/258.91 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. On May 4, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Oswald qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.70, but he was upset in the opening round by Steve Hodkinson. Mark's off-pace 6.05/205.94 fell to Steve's low buck car that won with a 5.88/246. Early in June, Oswald went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 5.76/263.11 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He improved to 5.74/260.11 to defeat Force's 5.78/253 in round one, but he lost in the battle of the "beer cars" in the semifinal, where his 5.78/257.14 fell to Bernstein's 5.71/252. Mark qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.75/249.86. In their first-round race, Hodkinson crossed the center line against him, and Oswald advanced with a 5.92/246.77. John Force also crossed the centerline against him in the second round, and once again, Mark advanced, this time at 5.84/252.59. This did not happen again in the semifinal, as eventual winner Tom McEwen laid a straight as an arrow 5.85/236 on him to beat the Firebird's 5.94/251.81. Another win finally came at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.65/259.66 (speed was a new track record). He continued to run strong through eliminations, and in the semifinal, his 5.76/255.17 beat Force's 5.84/253. The only problem was, Bernstein won his semifinal race with a 5.72/255, giving him lane choice in the final. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes had to be given a lot of credit in this win as he didn't dial in too much power and smoke the tires. Oswald won the final with a 5.76/255.76 over Kenny's 5.80/250. The following week (June 22), he also won the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.84/247.25. Larry Gould's 6.67/212 fell to his 5.89/252.80 in the opening round, and Mark reset both ends of the track record in the semifinal with a 5.77/254.95 that beat Paul Smith's 6.12/222 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced McEwen in the final, and there was no stopping the "Candies and Hughes" car on this day as Mark's 5.80/254.95 easily took the win over Tom's off-pace 6.19/176. At the end of June, the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.69/260.25 got the pole, but Mark and Brad Tuttle fried the tires in the opening round. Brad's 6.59/251 came out on top over Oswald's 6.61/251. It was probably the best race to watch of round one. The two "beer cars then met again in the final at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. They qualified one and two, with Bernstein's 5.81/256 getting the pole over Oswald's 5.87/245.90. Mark ran an easy 6.03/239.36 to advance in round one, when Doc Halladay broke. In the semifinal, he stepped it up to a 5.91/249 to beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch. Bernstein had the edge in performance at this event, and it stayed true in the final where his 5.87/253 got the victory over Mark's 5.99/238.09 runner-up effort. Photo from Indy 1986. Mark also ran 265 at IHRA Bristol and won the 1986 IHRA championship. He also ran 5.619 at the 1986 Chiefs at Ennis. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Cool rear spoiler. Oswald, smoking the tires, also beat Bernstein wire-to-wire in the final of the '86 Mile-Highs, a hell of a race on YouTube. Bernstein didn't smoke 'em, and Oswald still beat him. - Joe Moore

Notes: Armstrong followed the path least traveled by relying on a strong-running 352" small block Chevy for power. He claimed to never deviate from a diet of 20 percent nitro (in alky). The combo was good enough to set low qualifying time (8.33) for funnies at the AHRA Championship at Lions in late July 1966. - RT | Armstrong ran this car three different ways in 1966: injected fuel, blown fuel coupe, and blown fuel as a roadster, pictured here. This is the car he ran in 1965. In 1967, he stretched the now roofless Chevy II. In 1968, the car was run by Ron Lorenz and John Wright. - DD | On November 27, at the Lions East-West Meet, Dale put Frank Pedregon's Chrysler Hemi in the car. He ran 9.32 in the opening round to beat Eddie Marcek's Mustang, and he got out of shape in round two, where he lost to Ronnie Runyan.

Notes: Gordie had a fabulous year in 1979. He won the Gatornationals, the US Nationals, and the World Finals. His Indy 5.979 was the 4th entry into the Cragar Five-Second Club. | Gordie started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the field, but he lost early. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 but lost to Tripp Shumake driving Johnny Loper's Arrow in the first round. Bonin always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '79 was no exception. His 6.38 qualified #12, and his 6.47 advanced over a crossed-up Shumake in the opening round. In round two, he soloed with a 6.92/221 when Al Segrini could not run. More luck came his way in the semifinals when Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," broke at half-track, and Gordie's 6.93/223 got the win. He faced Tom Hoover in the final and got a great leave that saw his 6.93/224.43 hold on for the victory over Hoover's quicker 6.84/227. A holeshot also won him the NHRA Division 6 Opener at Firebird Raceway. There, a final round 6.66/216.78 beat John Force's 6.62. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, but he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.20/236.22 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Segrini who was driving the "Custom Body" car. Bonin slipped to a 6.58/187.11 that lost to Al's 6.16/230. Although he failed to make the finals at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he did qualify #2 with a 6.39. H did not race at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals.

Notes: Mike and Joe had a good season in '89. It started at the Winternationals, where Mike qualified #2 with a 5.34/279.85 (Top Speed). He had a bit of a snooze in the first round, and his 5.42/269.13 lost to Jim White's 5.46/258. They went on to the Supernationals, where they lost in the first round once again. At the Gatornationals, Mike set track records of 5.28/280.19 in qualifying #1, but for the third straight race, they lost in round one, this time to R.C. Sherman. Things went much better in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. A 5.48/266.35 qualified #5. In the first two rounds, he beat Tony McCallum and low qualifier Bruce Larson. In the semifinal, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.53 with a 5.48/263.15. In the final, he met newcomer Eric Reed. Reed smoked the tires, and Dunn claimed his first win of the season with a 5.60/264.08. The next event on the schedule was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Mike used a 5.31/280.98 (Top Speed) qualified #2. He lost to Art Hendey in round one. Mike took his second win at the Cajun Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.44/272.23 (Top Speed). He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, and in the second round, he got a solo because his competition, Whit Bazemore, was unable to run. Both he and Prudhomme smoked the tires in the semifinal, but Mike's 5.83/254 came out on top. In the final, he faced John Martin, but Martin broke, and Dunn's 5.63/268.25 got the victory. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals. Mike qualified #4 with a 5.33/274.97. He beat Martin in the first round. In the second round, both he and Chuck Etchells smoked the tires, and Chuck got the win. Mike and the Joe Pisano team did not run in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but they were back on tour for the next NHRA event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. Dunn ran 5.44 to qualify #10, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in round one. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, a 5.68/255.46 qualified #5 in the thin air. He beat Jim Murphy in round one before losing to Kenny Bernstein's 5.62 with a 5.65 in round two. At Sonoma at the end of July for the NHRA California Nationals, Mike qualified #12 with a 5.59/265.33 but lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. Also ran 5.397 at the 1989 US Nationals. The car was deep PURPLE. The best NHRA National Event times were the 5.281/280.98. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Scott used a 5.40/279.06 to qualify #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.78/218.44 lost to Art Hendey's 5.54/260. He broke through with his first-ever NHRA national event win at the Supernationals on March 5, defeating Bruce Larson in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.32 and set Top Speed at 279.58. Scott was one of 21 Funny Car drivers at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. It was a tough weekend for Scott as he had used up two engines in qualifying. He qualified #4 and then beat R.C. Sherman in round one, with a 5.69/256.71. He defeated a blower-popping Ed McCulloch in the semifinal with a 5.85/241.65. Still, it cost him another engine, and Kalitta never showed up for his race against Tony McCallum in the final. The following weekend (May 29), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.57 qualified #8. He lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to John Martin. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Sprignationals. His 5.50/272.97 qualified #11. In round one, his 5.59/240.32 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.33/272. His best times were a 5.281 at Ennis Fall and 279.58 (Top Speed) at Houston Spring. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Sid started driving this car early in June. He was in Tyler, Texas, for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Burkhart on June 7. He won the match. Times he reeled off since jumping behind the wheel included 7.52/199.10 at Memphis on June 11. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.91/192.71, beat Mike Burkhart in the first round, with a 7.79/196.50, but lost to Tom McEwen in the second round, 7.67/185 to Foster's 7.60/201.79. He still managed to have the fastest Ford Funny Car at the meet with the 201.79 pass. On June 27, he went to Courtland, Tenn., and ran 7.51. He then reset the ET record at National Trail with a 7.63/201.79 on June 29. Sid raced at an eight-car show at Suffolk on July 4, but an 8.03/185.04 lost to Dean LaPole in Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round. The next day it was off to Blaney, S.C., where he set another track record at 7.93/200.44. Another best-of-three-match race was run at LaPlace on July 20 against Don Gay's "Infinity" GTO. Sid won the first race with an 8.51/174.41 when Roy Gay got out of shape and hit the guardrail with minor damage to the GTO. Gay evened the score in the second race, winning with an 8.02/189 over the Torino's quicker 7.99/188.28. Foster lost an engine on the line in the third race, and Gay soloed to the match race victory. The following week (July 27), the "Super Ford" was at Southland Dragway for a best of three match against Leonard Hughes in the "Candies & Hughes" 'Cuda. Foster won the first race by default with an 8.15 when the 'Cuda broke a transmission in the first race. A new trans was installed, and in the second race, Hughes' 7.48/203 beat Sid's 7.83/191.89. In the third and deciding race, Foster ran a strong 7.67 but still lost to Leonard's 7.57/203. Foster lost to Gene Snow at Rockford Manufacturer's meet but beat Pat Minick with a 7.75/196.50 and Arnie Beswick with a 7.85. He ran a best-of-three-match race against Bobby Wood at Palmetto on August 9. Sid fouled in the first round while running a 7.72/194; the run also cost him a transmission. Wood won the first race with a 7.56/198, then singled to two more wins when the Super Ford couldn't return. A big win came at the AHRA Drag World Championships. There he beat Bob Sullivan in the final. He went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals but failed to crack the 7.54 "bump." On September 6, he ran at Bristol for the AHRA All-American. Sid beat Jim Maybeck in the first round, with a 7.80, before losing to Ronnie Runyan in round two. He lost early at Nashville's King of the Funnys race on September 13, where Runyan got him again, this time in the first round. On October 4, Foster showed up at the National Dragster open at National Trail. He was gunning for the NHRA Funny Car speed record of 198.67. On his first and only pass, he ran 202.74 but could not stop the car and crashed into the safety net. Sid was OK, but the Torino body was crunched up. He raced Wood again in mid-October for another best of three match at Shelby Country. Wood fouled in the first race, but Sid still managed to drive past him with a 7.49/201.78, tying the track speed record. In the second race, the Ford's transmission let go, and Bobby won with a 7.59/193, but in the last race, Sid sewed up the match by setting both ends of the track record with a 7.41/202.24 blast that beat Wood, who fouled again. On November 2, he raced at the Sears Point North/South Championships. The car ran well, hitting a 7.89/194.60, but he failed to make the finals. Sid qualified second on the Ford team at OCIR on November 7, and after the renewed, he returned on November 16 for their manufacturers meet; Sid won the first round with a motor blowing 8.11/186.72. But that was the only run he made due to the blown engine. According to a Drag News issue from November '69, Sid had mentioned that the car had run a best of 7.11/209. No mention of where these times were run. (Drag News 11/69) Ran 7.74 at first Annual Manufacturers' Championships at Rockford (Ill.) Dragway. - RT | Also 196.06 at Rockford Dragway, Byron, Ill., 7/69 | As far as I know, this car always campaigned with a Cammer. In 1970 the Mustang had a 426 installed to run at the manufacturer's meet, but Sid insisted that the SOHC was back for the next meet.

Notes: LOW and mean. The OCIR 6.01 made Beadle the second quickest Funny Car in the sport after Prudhomme's 5.98 at Ontario 1975 and 5.97 at Indy 1976. | Beadle started the season at the OCIR Opener in January. The car ran great, hitting 6.18/228 in the first round, over Tommy Ivo and a semifinal 6.13 to advance to the final. There he beat Ed McCulloch with his track record 6.01 at 234.37. It was an excellent start to the year. He then went to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 with a 7.61. The track was terrible, and Tom Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.73. But the "Blue Max" crew got "her tuned up" in the first round, where his 6.52/223.88 beat Jim West. Beadle set Low ET in round two with a 6.48 to beat Steve Harris, but in the semifinals, the rear-end let go, and Beadle lost to eventual winner John Collins. Then it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18/232.55 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.14. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, with a 6.15/231.95, and a round two 6.27 beat Hoover's quicker 6.19. Another good light in the semifinals made his 6.41 a winner over Gordie Bonin's 6.40. This put Beadle into the final against Prudhomme. It looked like the "Blue Max" faltered in the final, but it was really just the "Snake" running a great 6.03/247 for the win while Beadle had to settle for the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Raymond ran 6.31 to qualify #3. He improved to 6.28/228 on a second-round solo when Al Bergler broke, but he lost to Bonin in the semifinals. The team did not run the IHRA Winternationals, and while the "Max" did not reach the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals, Beadle was the low qualifier. Raymond was also the low qualifier at the AHRA Springnationals with a 6.57/218.44. He beat Jim White and Tom Hovland before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinals. The team was at Union Grove for the Drag Racing Olympics race on May 29 and 30. The show was run with 22 cars running the first-round, with the four lowest ET's advancing into the semifinals. Beadle's 6.33 was good enough to advance, but he lost to McEwen in the semis. The following day (May 30), they did it again, but the "Max" failed to qualify for the semifinals this time. Surprisingly, they skipped running the NHRA Cajun Nationals in favor of the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, as the races were run on the same weekend (June 5). It was an eight-car field, and Beadle qualified on the "bump" with a 6.59/220.59. But the car came alive during eliminations, running 6.35/229.01 in the first round, to beat Graham and a 6.46/210.78 over Prock's 6.53/213 in the semifinals. He faced Collins in the finals, and Raymond's 6.53/223.52 got the victory over John's tire-smoking 7.13/181. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 and lost to Prudhomme in the first round. Beadle won the second PDA race held at Fremont on June 23. There he stopped John Lombardo in the final. He then won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. He qualified #2 with a 6.31 and a final round 6.43/191 beat Gordon Mineo's off-pace 7.95/103. The team skipped the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown as the weekend before the team used up three aluminum engines. The team got things sorted out, and they ended the month of July by winning Portland's 32 car show on the 31st. Beadle had set Low ET, and in the final, his 6.35 beat Mike Miller's 6.39. Beadle could not get the "Max" to run a number at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. He smoked the tires and shut off in both his races losing to Bonin and Hank Johnson. A week later (August 19), the car ran right as Beadle won the Division 6 final at Portland. He beat Rich Rogers, driving the "Green Elephant" in the opening round with a 6.43/211.76. A semifinal 6.39/209.30 beat Jim Dunn, and he faced the Low ET car of Bonin in the final. Beadle got out first, and his 6.34/227.84 hung on to win over Bonin's slightly quicker 6.33/225. He then went to Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Beadle qualified #3 in the eight-car field and then proceeded to run 6.45/212.26 over Bob Pickett and a motor-saving 7.29/141.06 solo when Bonin failed to hear the call for the semifinals. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Beadle's 6.53/214.73 finished runner-up to Hoover's 6.40/215. After the team's northern swing, they returned to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where a 6.22/226.13 qualified a disappointing #14. A first-round 6.20/228 by Tom McEwen sent the 6.45/200.44 of Beadle packing for home.

Notes: First in 6.40s. WITH a 354" Chrysler punched out to 371 inches. Only NHRA national event appearance was at the Ontario Supernationals where he qualified #2 with a 6.917/205.94 and went two rounds. Quite an ET drop a few weeks later. | Although Goldstein’s 6.80 ended the year as the national record, I’d be remiss for not mentioning Bill Leavitt, who ran a stunning series of passes — 6.48, 6.51, and 6.53 — at Lions’ Grand Finale in December, though national records were not available for those runs. - Phil Burgess, National Dragster

Notes: Raymond was the first to capitalize on selling merchandise such as T-shirts and halter tops (with free installation). They sold for between $5 and $10 each, and they sold lots (reportedly more than $100,000 of shirts, hats, and halters). The team started the season at Fremont for the sixth annual Nitro Bowl. All cars were to have made three runs, with the winner being based on the number of wins in competition. In Beadle's first race, he smoked the tires to a 10.40/92.30 loss to Bob Pickett's 8.56/148. In the second race, he improved to 6.56 to beat Jim Dunn's 6.66, and his best ET, a 6.48, beat Roger Garten's 6.51 "Warhorse."The team then went to Irwindale for the Grand Premier event. Beadle only qualified #13 with a 6.94/180, but in the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.27 at 216, then beat Bryan Raines. But in round two, the "Blue Max" had problems, and Raymond shut down to 8.35 in a loss to Tom McWen's 6.31/229. Then, it was off to OCIR for the season opener. Beadle lasted until the second round, where he lost a motor and the race to John Collins driving Tom McEwen's second Duster. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.21/200.01 qualified #3, but he lost to Tom Prock's 6.30/221 with a 6.45/215.31 in the first round. At the Gatornationals, Beadle again qualified #3, this time with a 6.34/222.22. Once again, he lost in the first round, when he smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 and lost to Bob Pickett's 6.57/225 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. In March, the team was at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Beadle set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.37 at 206.89 over Paul Smith. In the semifinals, his 6.57/220.58 lost to Prock's 6.57/209. Then things clicked for the team: the "Blue Max" went on its longest undefeated streak. It started at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships on April 4, which he won over Russell Long in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Raymond also set Low ET at 6.22. The streak lasted until June 13 at the NHRA Springnationals, where he finally lost when he fouled against McEwen in the semifinals. It should be mentioned that he was at Irwindale on April 17 for the Coca-Cola Championships. While he didn't win, he didn't get beat either. All cars made two passes, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Beadle soloed with a 6.51/188 in the first round, and his 6.45/172 beat McEwen in the second round. His times weren't good enough to reach the final. Between these races, he won the NHRA Division 7 race at OCIR over Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza with a 6.28/227.27 after earlier qualifying #2 with a 6.25/227. He won the NHRA Cajun Nationals at LaPlace Dragway. He qualified #1 with a 6.34 (Low ET) at 217.81 and beat Dale Emery in Mike Burkhart's Monza in the final with a 6.70/217.39 to Emery's 6.78/224. (Emery would eventually join the "Blue Max" team in a few years). On May 2, Beadle won the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo. He ran times of 6.55/205.82 and 6.37/219.61 (Top Speed) to get into the final, where he met and beat Long's 6.82/164 with a 6.36 (Low ET) at 216.16. He stopped at Fremont for a ten-car show and set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.14 that beat Dave Uyehara. His 6.26/215 beat Johnston in the second round, and he went up against Don Prudhomme for the title. It was as good as it gets as both ran 6.18 (Beadle at 229.00), but the win went to the "Max." Another IHRA win came on May 23 at Atlanta International for the Dixie Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show, and Beadle ran 6.41, 6.51, and a semifinal 6.49 that beat Gary Burgin's quicker 6.48. In the final, he ran 6.42 for the victory over Ron O'Donnell's 6.50. Still, another win came on June 5 when he won the NHRA Division 2 race at Blaney. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.28/220.04 before running 6.40/220 to beat Shirl Greer in the final. Then came the Springnationals, where he fouled out. Raymond's best NHRA times were 6.075/229.00 at Indy. Did he run 235.60 somewhere this year? | Won the 64 FCs in August at Seattle. Beadle ran 6.31 and 6.34 to qualify for the final against Mike Miller (6.41). Last year of the CC Cavalcade. Miller beat the engine-losing Max to the finish line to drunken cheers but swerved outside the boundary line. Raymond also won the Fremont leg of the PDA series over Johnston/Pisano. At both the Fremont PDA and SIR 64, the Max tested a larger, rectangular, polished Crower injector, the same type used by Garlits in '78. "Bad Bob" Williams' sometimes Clarence Bailey-driven '76 Dart used one. - Joe Moore

Notes: This car was a Bad Hombre, way ahead of its time. We were always trying something new every time it went to the starting line. - Denny Savage | Best times of 6.09/239 cited in ad to sell the car. 1978 IHRA Champion. - Danny White | Savage started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.277/209.79 qualified #6. In the opening round of competition, his 6.39/214 beat John Collins' 6.55/217. But in round two, an off-pace 6.62/230 lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.48/226. The team then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. There Denny's 6.57/230.17 qualified #8. He beat Jim Adolph in the first round, with a 6.54/233.76. In round two, his opponent, Gene Modlin, broke on the line and the "Powers-Steel" car advanced with a 6.79/231.95. In the semifinals, he faced Don Prudhomme, and both smoked the tires. The "Snake" recovered first, and his 6.86/213 beat Denny's 7.75/134.00 to the stripe. Gainesville was their next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. The team continued to qualify well, with a 6.38/216.34 getting the #8 spot in the field. But a troubled 7.55/134.73 in the first round, lost to Shirl Greer's 6.35/230. Traction wasn't the best at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Savage's 7.16/196.50 qualified #2 behind Dale Pulde's 6.88/221. In round one, he improved a lot, where his 6.65/202 beat Pete Williams' 6.89/213 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Frank Oglesby got off the line a little quicker in the semifinals, and his 6.60/218 hung on to win over Denny's 6.59/218. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a great 6.09/212.26 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car show. Dennis Geisler broke on the line in the first round, and Savage ran 6.17/215.31 to advance. In round two, a 6.18/217.91 beat Bob Pickett's slightly quicker 6.16/230. He got another solo in the semifinals when Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker," had the car lock up in gear. A 6.22/230.76 advanced to the final. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, driving Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but the Camaro had a bit more in it than the Arrow, and Savage's 6.21/214.79 got the win over Tripp's hard-charging 6.30/226. From hero to zero. The following week (April 2), Denny failed to qualify for the eight-car field at the NHRA Division Seven race at Fremont. What's more surprising was that it only took a 6.59 to make the field. The roller-coaster ride continued at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There he qualified #2 with a 6.36/204. A 6.75/201 beat Greer's troubled 13.05 in round one. In round two, Les Cassidy also had problems against him, and Savage advanced with a 6.49/216. Even his semifinal opponent, Williams, could not get in a good run against him, and Denny ran 6.56/225 to meet low-qualifier, Pulde in the final. When it's your day, it's your day as Pulde broke, and Savage got the victory with a 7.12/223. On May 21, the IHRA held its Dixie Nationals at Atlanta. Savage qualified poorly, down in the #9 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Pulde. Crew Chief Dan Geare must have set the car on "kill" as Savage cracked off a 6.26 to beat Dale's 6.35. Denny set Low ET in round two with a 6.24 that sent Greer packing. He had a good race with Dave Settles in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. Savage's 6.34 came out on top over Settle's 6.37. He faced the "Chi-Town" bunch in the final. Savage had the edge in terms of their ET's in competition. But Williams pulled out a squeaker, running 6.45/215 to get the win over Denny's 6.47/226.13. Savage was also credited with Top Speed at 228.42. Savage was in Milan in July for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.50 but improved to 6.11/229.5 (Low ET and Top Speed) in the opening round over Pete Williams, who had shut the "Chi-Town Hustler" off on the line. Another 6.11 at 217.91 beat Roger Lindamood in the semifinals, and he went up against Tom Anderson in the final. Anderson was no slouch as he had won his semifinal race with a 6.12. But in the final, Tom had a wheelie bar break and went into a huge wheelstand while Savage ran a motor-blowing, on fire, 7.28/134.94 for the victory. Best NHRA ET of 6.120 236 at the Summernationals, which Denny won over Ed McCulloch. | We need to confirm the 6.02 from OCIR.

Notes: Comet roadster with Cammer, C-6 combo. Jack Chrisman got one of four original Logghe-built Comets in 1966. Jack took his proven blown 427 SOHC out of the Chrisman’s Comet to run in the new flip-top car, unlike Nicholson and Schartman, who ran injected Cammers. In 1966, it seemed that the four lightweight Comets dominated the funny car competition like no other cars. Car burned to the ground at New York National mid-1966. Repurchased the old Comet from Dee Keaton to finish the season. Chrisman ran a quickest-ever 8.71 and 184 mph at Riverside during the year. We need to confirm which combo ran that number. | This car would have been just at home at a car show as a race track. The Shedlik built fiberglass body weighed 200 lbs. and the whole car was just 1,870 lbs. Chrisman was experimenting with running direct-drive and C-6 automatic transmission. Jack was at Pomona on April 24 in his Comet roadster, making exhibition passes with a best of 9.06 at 171. At the end of May, he beat Emery Cook driving Don Garlits' Dart two straight at Cecil County. He ran times of 9.35/163.04 and 9.36/168 to win the match. He was still using his old '65 engine from the previous year's car, but he installed a new engine with aluminum heads shortly after. Chrisman won Funny Car at Riverside for the HRM Championships. He beat a fouling Al Vanderwoude in the first round, with an 8.72/184.42 (Top Speed). His 8.74/182.18 beat Bob Davis in the semifinals, while a final round 8.71/179.28 got the victory over Jim Liberman driving the "Brutus" car. On July 2, Jack was at Detroit in his Comet roadster to face Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" car in a best two out of three match race. Jack attempted to warm up before the match but had some problems with his supercharger. He got it straightened out in time for the first race as his 8.59/177.51 beat Dyer, who blew his transmission. Dyer could not repair his car, so Chrisman soloed to win the match, but what a solo it was. He set a new track record 8.50/178.57 for the win. On July 9, he was at Capitol for a best of three match against Dick Landy. Dick was late arriving as his truck had blown a rear end on the way to the match. So, in the first race, Hubert Platt subbed for him in his Mustang. Platt's words were, "maybe he'll foul." Chrisman didn't foul in their race, and he ran an 8.82/181.44 to beat Platt's wheelstanding 9.86/136. Landy arrived with some help in the form of Malcolm Durham's transporter. So, the two lined up for round two of the match. They were having a good race until half-track when Chrisman exploded a supercharger. Landy won with a 9.33/137. Jack was done for the day, and once again, Platt was called in to race Landy in the final race. Platt lost, so Dick was declared the winner of the match. Jack was at York, PA, on July 17 for the NHRA Division One race. He set the S/XS speed record to 175.43. He was supposed to run off against Ed Schartman in the S/XS final, but Chrisman had bearing problems, and Schartman soloed for the win. ET 1966 (July 1966 Car Craft) MPH Crofton MD 1966 (8/12/66 Drag News). Car Craft's "Top Ten Rods of 1966" feature credited 8.71 at 184.00 times during the year. - RT

Notes: If there's one thing you can say about John Mazmanian's cars, it's that they were clean. His cars were like works of art. Polished and gleaming like they were going to a car show. But you couldn't let that fool you, as they were always fast. It's a bit surprising that Mazmanian's trade was a rubbish contractor in Los Angeles. Only running Funny Cars since '68, John had his nephew, Rich Siroonian, drive as well as Wendell Shipman, Arnie Behling, and Mike Snively. But for the '72 season, he hired Danny Ongais. Back in '69, it seemed like every weekend, the Mickey Thompson Mustang, with Ongais behind the wheel, was facing Siroonian in "Big John's" car in a final. Now Mazmanian had Danny on his team. The car didn't debut until June and used a 112" Woody Gilmore chassis. The engine was a Keith Black-built 426 Hemi. It was stroked to 472. Black liked his Engle cams; of course, one was used in this car. The GMC-6/71 was overdriven 33% and was set up by Don Hampton. Enderle injection sat on top. A Lenco two-speed transmitted the power back to a Halibrand quick-change rear. Don Kirby was responsible for the paint. Joining Ongais on the team as the crew chief was Ray Zeller. The 'Cuda weighed 1,800 lbs. An early run with the car netted the team a 6.38. Danny was at Fremont on July 16 for its Summer Championships. The car ran well, but his 6.66/222.76 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.62/203. The second quickest car in the sport after Foster & Setzer in 1972. The run came against Foster's 6.30, making it the quickest side by-sider to date at that time. (And the 225 was paired with Foster's 235.60, making it the FASTEST side by sider as well.) Also ran 6.515/225.56 at Indy Nationals 9/72 and 6.75 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/72. Danny was the number two qualifier at 6.38 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2. He broke in the first round against Bill Leavitt.
