Notes: 427 Ford Cammer, C-6 automatic combo. This was Dyno Don's last flopper. He joined many of the early funny car drivers as they migrated back to the Super Stock and the new-for-1970 Pro Stock classes. Nicholson never drove this car after November 1968, instead handing the controls to Frank Oglesby. |

Notes: 398" early hemi, Hilborn bug catcher, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis combo. Car was featured in 3/68 SS&DI magazine. - RT | Lew set Maple Grove's speed record at 181.80. He ran an 8.24/181.80 at Carlsbad on 2/25/68. - Ron Howard | Confirmed 7.72 at Cecil County. | Lew started the season by running at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. Thirty-three cars showed for the sixteen available spots, and Lew's 8.44 qualified eleventh. In the first round, an 8.40/175.78 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.18/180. Lew qualified second with a 7.99 at the Funny Car Spectacular at Lions on February 24. He beat Jim Liberman's 8.39/177 in the first round, with a 7.95/183.66. In the second round, he ran an off pace 8.64/174.75 that lost to Gas Ronda's troubled, but even slower, 8.75/144. The following day (February 25) found Lew at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.00/184.82 (Top Speed) beat Fred Goeske. A second-round 8.24/181.80 beat Gene Conway, but in the semifinals, Liberman's 7.86/180 beat his 8.20/182.18. On March 3, he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show where 30 cars attempted to qualify. He qualified #14 with an 8.36/173.74. He beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" Barracuda in the first round, with a 7.97/186.32 (Top Speed). In the second round, he lost a close one to Don Nicholson's 8.00/169 to his 8.03/183.68. He was at Pittsburgh for its Funny Car Championships on May 4, but he lost to Eddie Schartman in the first round. Lew set a 7.77 track record at Aquasco on May 5 during the running of the Funny Car Invitational. Unfortunately, he was caught napping by Dick Bourgeois, who beat him with an 8.31/178 while "Brutus" played catch up, setting that record while running 181.44. Arrington had a best-of-three-match race against Hayden Proffitt in the "Grand Rebel SST" at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 10. Proffitt won the first race when Lew got crossed up and slowed to 6.62, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 5.62/136. On May 26, Arrington was in New Orleans for a best of three match against Sid Foster. Sid's Mustang was having severe handling problems and could not get down the track straight, but he still managed to win their first race when Lou fouled. Arrington easily won the last two races for the match race victory with runs of 8.14/180.36 and 8.24/178.21. |

Notes: Denny was at Martin, Michigan, for a sixteen-car show in June. While he didn't make the final, he did run impressive times of 6.27 and 6.28. Indy 1977 was a quick field. Savage and the Hustler were the second alternate at 6.248. But it made Coil realize that if they were going to run national events, he had to take a different approach. Due to finances, it had to happen gradually, but just few years later, they qualified number one at the Winternationals and went on to win two world championships. — Paul Stenquist |

He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.67/207.85. After a one-week rain delay, John improved to 6.15 in the first round, to beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.12 that lost to Dale Armstrong's 6.15. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Force ran 6.065/240.64 to qualify #8. Notes: Pat Foster took over driving from Ron Colson in 1975. | At the 1975 IHRA Summer Nationals (Great Lakes Dragway) in July, Pat qualified number one with a 6.397. He ran 6.45/225.00 in a first-round defeat of the "Chi-Town Hustler" and eventually finished as runner-up to Raymond Beadle (Blue Max) when he smoked the tires in the final. | Pat Foster drove for a lot of teams in '75. He started the season by driving John Lombardo's car at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. Just a week later, he was driving the Pisano and Matsubara car. In March, he showed up at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American West race, driving for Keeling and Clayton. He drove for them until June, when Billy Meyer replaced him in that ride. Ron Colson had still been driving the "Chicago Patrol" at the NHRA Springnationals where the team failed to qualify, but the following weekend at the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, Pat was behind the wheel. All cars made two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Foster didn't make the final as a 6.99/202.70 lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the first round, and in the second round, he had a small oil fire on the line and had to shut off. The team then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Foster qualified #12, but a 6.72 in the opening round lost to Tom Hoover's 6.61. At the third NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater, the "Patrol" showed ‘em with a 6.34 to qualify low in the four-car field. (Some divisional races had trouble filling their fields, so many shows were four-car affairs). Unfortunately, the car broke on the pass and could not run in eliminations, letting the first alternate, Don Prudhomme(!), into the show. The 6.34 held for Low ET. As mentioned above, he qualified #1 and finished runner-up at Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals. Things didn't go nearly as well at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Although he qualified #15 with a 6.580/219.51, he lost to Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford" in the opening round. Foster also went up to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.680/216.34. An improved 6.490/221.72 beat Shirl Greer's 6.520/225.00 in the first round, but a tire-smoking 7.08/145.16 in the semifinals lost to Tom Prock's 6.457/217.39 in the "Custom Body" car. He failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He failed to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where he was the second alternate with a 6.43/205.94. The following week(Sept.7), Foster was at Rockingham for the US Open Championships. A 7.44 qualified #13, but in the first round, of eliminations, he improved to 6.73/214.28 to beat Kenny Safford's 6.77/194. But in round two, his 6.81/181.08 lost to Gene Snow's 6.70/215. The team did not run at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals but was at OCIR for the East vs. West Championships. There Foster had nothing but problems as he could not get a good run in as the car smoked the tires on every pass. He lost all three of his races. On October 5, he was at Irwindale's 32 car show. The race was run with all cars making two passes, and the two lowest ET cars would meet in the final. An opening round 6.58/207.85 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.63/216. In round two, he won when Neil Lefler broke a transmission. He failed to run well enough to advance into the final. DNQ at Indy US Nationals 9/75. Qualified #13 at Ontario 10/12/75 at 6.352/225.00, followed by a 6.448/222.22 to 6.600/226.13 win over Gary Cochran in round one. The unstoppable Don Prudhomme ended Pat’s day in round two, 6.140/223.76 to 6.571/196.50. |

Notes: Segrini was driving Kosty's car from at least March through June 1973. He was at Lakeland on March 4 for the IHRA Winternationals. Al qualified #11, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.13/193.53 lost to eventual winner Pat Foster's 6.83/205 in the Barry Setzer Vega. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.58/225.00 qualified #11. The car lost fire on the line in the first round, advancing Ed McCulloch. Al was at Englishtown in April for an eight-car show. A first-round 6.68/219.51 beat Tom Prock's 7.08/181 in the "Custom Body" car, but he had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. He was really running well at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. He only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.76 in the first round, beat #2 qualifier Dale Emery driving the "Jeg's" Camaro. That time was good enough for Low ET, but he stepped it up even further in the semifinals when he tied the track ET record with a 6.65 at 218.97 (Top Speed) while beating Bill Leavitt. Unfortunately, he had troubles in the final and lost to Russell Long, driving Charlie Proite's Charger. Al was at Connecticut for its 13th annual Memorial Day Championships. He set Low ET at 6.60 and finished runner-up to Leavitt. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals (times not reported). The following weekend (June 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he reached the second round before he lost to Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." On July 4, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He won his first-round race but lost to Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals. |

Notes: Kelly Brown did really well driving this car at its first major event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.904/208.33 and an opening-round 6.89/212.26 beat Leonard Hughes. In round two, he made an easy pass when Bobby Rowe failed to fire. In the semifinals, Brown set Top Speed at 218.97 (6.81) while defeating Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's now Chrysler-powered Mustang at a close 6.96/213. He faced low qualifier Don Schumacher in the final. Don had been running quicker in eliminations, but the final was close. Kelly stepped it up to 6.81 in a runner-up finish to Schumacher's 6.76/218. Early in July, he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. He ran his remarkable 227.27 in qualifying, at the time, the fastest run ever. In the first round, he beat Bob Pickett with a 6.91/213.27, but he fouled against Stan Shiroma in round two. A couple of weeks later, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Only ten cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue, and Brown got the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in the first round, and slowed to a 7.35/153 loss to Gene Snow's 7.05/196. Apparently, Kelly had some extra time on his hands on August 19 when he went to OCIR to test the new "Blue Max" Mustang for Harry Schmidt. Ed Pink was also there to see what the car would do. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.731/221.67 qualified #6, but a troubled 7.32/212.76 in the first round, lost to Jim Dunn's 6.97/200. His next stop was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, the following week (September 10) for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All nineteen cars made just one pass, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Brown ran 6.93/220 to beat Dave Condit's 7.03/214 in the "LA Hooker." His time was the fourth lowest overall. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Amarillo's NHRA Division 4 final. Not long after this, Don Schumacher and then Pat Foster replaced him behind the wheel. Kelly drove the Mr. Ed Charger at NHRA Ontario. We formerly listed a 6.70 for Kelly. Removing that until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Started the year in Permatex livery. Changed to Fast Orange. First career NHRA final round at Memphis, TN '92. Curt Swartz photo from Bristol, TN, 1992. | Whit qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.39/264.78. He could not run in eliminations, and the first alternate, Mark Sievers, took his place in the field. A 5.56/261.24 qualified #14 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. In the first round, a troubled 6.67/147.14 got around an equally troubled Dale Pulde. He lost to Richard Hartman in round two. Houston held the third NHRA event of the season, the Supernationals, where Bazemore ran 5.37/263.92 to qualify #11. An off pace 5.78/178.42 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/193. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals on March 15. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/233.10. In the first round, he and Hoover ran 5.62 (Whit at 255.10), with Tom winning. |

Notes: Teamed with Joe Amato. Photo from Columbus 1987. Bruce had been running his Corvette for the early part of the season until he debuted his Beretta at the NHRA Springnationals in June. It did well during qualifying, running 5.74/249.93 for the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The following week, he took it to Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. A 6.16/166.66 qualified #5 in the eight-car field setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein. Larson improved to 5.85/232.55 in their race, but Kenny's 5.71/244 got the win. Bruce went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Qualifying was easy as only 15 cars showed. Still, Larson laid down a 5.88/244.83 to qualify #7. He had a close first-round race against Tom McEwen that saw his 5.93/247.72 lose to McEwen's 5.91/240. Closer to home, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.75/248.55 qualified #10, but a 5.87/251.81 lost to Mark Oswald's 5.64/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" car in round one. He followed the NHRA tour to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.85/244.56. But in the opening round, he smoked the tires and lost to Steve Hodkinson. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, a 5.75/251.18 qualified #12, but again he lost in round one. This time Don Prudhomme's 5.73/253 beat his off-pace 6.08/234.92. Bruce was one of eight-cars that had run well enough to qualify for the "Big Bud Shootout" held in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. But his first-round bad luck persisted when he smoked the tires and shut of to 6.95/135.29 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 5.71/259. For the US Nationals the next day, 21 cars attempted to qualify for the show. Larson qualified #9 with a 5.72. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein where once again Bruce went into tire smoke, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. | 261.02 was at the 1987 NHRA Motorcraft Gatornationals Gainesville with the Corvette. He ran 256.33 at Phoenix for the NHRA Castrol GTX Fallnationals on 10/18/87. Just looking for the Fastest Speed recorded in 1987 for Bruce with this Beretta. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: John was at Tucson Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was slick, and he qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.77. He improved to 6.60/204.78 in the first round, to beat Jim Liberman's 6.82. Another 6.60 in the second round beat Rick Johnson while a semifinal 6.61 advanced when Raymond Beadle broke a rear end in the "Blue Max." In the final, he faced Tom Hoover, and Collins ran his best time of the weekend, a 6.58/221.12, to take the victory. John qualified #5 at the NHRA Winternationals at 6.293/231.36 and then won a round one matchup with John Lombardo, 6.250/228.42 to 6.80/138. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two, 6.14/203 to John's 12-second shut-off pass. He didn't race another NHRA national event until Indy, where his 6.281/225.56 was the third alternate. That was John's last NHRA national event of the year. | Second quickest at SIR '77 64 FCs at 6.38, after John Lombardo's meet's quickest 6.24. They met in the final, where people (me included) climbed over the fence into the grass, and some blind drunk stepped into Lombardo's beams for an instant red light, giving Collins the win. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Ed McCulloch debuted his new Arrow at the NHRA Fallnationals in September. He qualified #6 at 6.331/226.13. In round one, he fell off the pace and lost to Jim Adolph, 6.58/191.89 to 7.24/155.17. On October 1 at Irwindale's Grand Finale. This was Irwindale's final race, and it featured a sixteen-car field. Ed ran 6.55/211 in the opening round to beat Gary Densham's 6.59/205, but he shut off in round two against the eventual winner, John Lombardo. He qualified #xx at the Ontario World Finals at 6.25/229.59 but again lost in the first round, this time to Tom McEwen, 6.174/230.76 to 6.422/211.26. Notes: This car debuted at the Epping WWCS in August 1980. Its maiden pass was during Saturday night qualifying on a racing surface that had been wet for an hour while the rain was still falling. Classic Roy Harris! Photo from Indy 9/80, where Roy qualified #9 with a 6.067/238.72. He faced low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max in the first round." Luck was on his side, though, as Beadle smoked the tires in their race, and Harris advanced into the second round with a 6.28/236.22. Tim Grose smoked the tires in his second-round race, and Roy ran 6.31/233 for the win. His luck ran out in the semifinals when he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open on September 14. Roy qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.40 lost to Dick Rosberg's 6.19 in the "Fighting Irish" Firebird in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals. In October, he was at Fremont for the Winston Record Challenge race. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Prudhomme in the semifinal, where his 6.35/214.28 fell to the "Snake's" 6.08/220. Harris ended his season at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #7. He beat Tom Ridings in round one, and in the second round, his 6.21 beat Rob Williams' 6.29. He got out of shape in the semifinals and crossed the centerline while racing Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." Roy's Indy 6.06 was his best NHRA national event ET of the year, and an earlier 240.64 from Pomona was his best speed in the Arrow). |

Notes: Tom failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the sixth alternate at 5.59/247.45. He did much better at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.39/255.68 qualified #14. He improved to 5.24/287.90 to upset Cruz Pedregon's 5.34/287 in the first round. He then ran 5.29/258.62 to defeat Wyatt Radke in round two. In the semi-final, he ran his best time of the weekend, where his 5.23/276.32 took out Jim Epler. That put him in his first NHRA final since the '93 Autolite Nationals. Unfortunately, he slowed to 5.40/238.28 in the final and lost to John Force's 5.05/298. Houston was not a good race for Hoover. His 5.59/219.94 qualified on the "bump," and in the first round, his 5.86/178.11 fell to low qualifier Mark Oswald's 5.15/297. He stepped it up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.22/256.33. A 5.43/234.98 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.55/227 in the first round. He then lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. Shortly after that, he raced at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field; his 5.47/228.60 qualified last. He lost to low qualifier Pedregon in the first round. He was again on the "bump" at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.56/241.02. Being last on the qualifying sheet always forced you to run the low qualifier in the first round. That did not help Hoover, as in the first round, his 5.30/257.43 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.15/262. He managed to qualify #13 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.38/231.30, but he still got beat in the first round, this time by Al Hofmann. |

Notes: Denny qualified #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 6.160/236.84, and in the first round, ran a strong 6.02/239.36 to beat Kenny Bernstein. Unfortunately, in round two, he lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer on a holeshot, 6.35/228 to Denny's 6.32/226.70. That was Denny's only NHRA national event of the year. | Car sold to Bill Daily |

Notes: The Tension Charger was a Ramchargers car that had been crashed. Dad front-halved & re-vamped the chassis & mounted the body himself. Later, he & Don Gatliff cut & sectioned the body to make it a Mini-Charger. — Brian Greer | Shirl was at Gainesville in Jan for a best-of-three-match race against Tom Donahee. In the first race, Greer's 8.78/161.57 beat the Corvair's off pace 9.77/165, but in the second race, Tom's 8.57/176 evened the score over Shirl's 8.92/126.65. The final race had Shirl win by resetting both ends of the track record with an 8.09/180.72 over Tom's 8.38/174. Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. |

Notes: Chrysler dominated the Funny Car ranks in '71, and the Chevy campaigners were having a really tough time keeping up. Chadwick was loyal to the Chevrolet cause and refused to switch to a Hemi. His performance was hurting for most of the season, but he turned the quickest time for Chevy-powered cars near the end of the year. The Camaro was built at Don Hardy's shop, and it had a 118" wheelbase. The body was a product of JE Fiberglass. Chadwick and his crew chief, Ray Sullins, put together the 427 Chevy engine. As much as he was a Chevy supporter, Chadwick did run a Mopar rear end with 4.56 gears. He attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals but failed to better the 7.30 "bump." Kelly was one of four Funny Cars running at the Amarillo Opener in March. On an early check-out pass, he warmed up with a 7.23. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, but his 7.53/184.04 lost to Snow's 7.02/209. In his second race, he ran Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max.” Once again, he lost. Another four-car race was run at Southland. In his first race, he faced Gene Snow, who was debuting his new Charger. Chadwick's 7.35/187.11 beat Snow's new car blues at 8.19/128. Unfortunately, the run cost Kelly a rear axle, and he was done for the day. Also, early in the year, Chadwick faced Art Ward driving the "Avenger" Challenger in a best of three match at Cornhusker. He had problems in the first race and shut off on the line, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.36 and 7.46 with a best speed of 196.07. He was at Cecil County for the Maryland State Funny Car Championships in May. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.14/190 in the first round, beat Sam Miller's 7.29/207. Chadwick fouled against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" in the semifinals. But Rowe burnt some pistons and could not run the final, so Chadwick got back into the show. He faced another Chevy-powered car in the final, Bruce Larson's. Kelly ran 7.31/177 for the victory when Larson blew a transmission. Chadwick was running really well at Oswego on August 8 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. He ran three 6.8's to win the event. He was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American race, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Kelly was Low ET qualifier with a 6.734 at OCIR's annual Manufacturer's Meet. He ran several more 6.70s during Saturday night eliminations, but parts breakage kept him from having a chance at making the finals. Won NHRA Division 3 event at Bowling Green on 9/19/71 when Al Marshall crossed the centerline in the final. |

Butch qualified #8 at NHRA Columbus (times unavailable) and won a first-round matchup with Ron Potter, 6.84/191 to 7.24. He lost. He beat Don Schumacher in round two, 6.74/203.16 but lost in the semis to Leonard Hughes, 7.38/212 to 10.00-82. Butch won the Mr. Chevrolet event at Capitol Raceway, MD, and he qualified at 6.728/218.44 at Tulsa PRA in August (was that in this car or the Hawaiian?) | Al Bergler's '72 Vega, Logghe Chassis, J&E body, Kirby paint, Keith Black Hemi with a Lenco 2 speed. Butch Maas drove the car that year, winning Mr. Chevrolet at Capitol Raceway. I got the et and speed info from "Ben Brown on Funny Cars" in the August 1972 issue of Car Craft. - Tom Nagy |

Notes: Castronovo Bros. Woody Car, Tom Prock was driving here. Phil Roberts was the crew chief; the number 2 is on the car as Phil Castronovo won the Funny Car World Championship in '71. Back then, the Top Fuel winner got the number 1. Funny car champ no. 2, Pro Stock no. 3. | After car owner Phil Castronovo won the NHRA World Championships and was crowned the '71 Funny Car Champion, he decided not to tour in '72 and placed Tom Prock behind the wheel of his "Custom Body" Challenger. Woody Gilmore built the 120" chassis. The car used a Keith Black-built 426 Hemi. It was stroked and used M/T rods, Venolia pistons, and a Crane roller cam. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and a Don Hampton prepared GMC 6/71 was overdriven 30%. A Hilborn pump fed the 92% nitro to the Enderle injection. The engine made 1,700 hp, and the power was sent to the Dana 5.12 rear by a two-speed Lenco transmission. Don Kirby did the paint while Kenny Youngblood did his touch with the rest. The car weighed 1,800 lbs. The new car debuted early in July at Englishtown's FC Spectacular race. |
