Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Also 5.49 at Ennis All Stars race in April. Battle for FC ET record at Ennis 87 was amazing: John Force (5.453), Mark Oswald (5.449), Mike Dunn (5.443), and Force (5.396) all reset the mark, but Ed McCulloch finally landed the mark with the 5.366 (with a best speed of 271.73). Later went 272.06 at Pomona Finals 87.

Notes: Held Fremont track record at the end of 1969 with a 7.25, 202.54. -- DW | Won 1st Annual Manufacturers Championship at Rockford (Ill.) Dragway with three sequential 7.37-7.37-7.39 passes, setting a track record of 7.37-205.46. -- RT | Hughes started his season at the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Larry Arnold in the Super Ford in the first round but lost to Clare Sanders in round two. The team ran at the NHRA Winternationals on Feb 2 and due to the poor track surface ran an 8.31-187.89 that still qualified them #13. Hughes ran low et of the first round with an 8.01-193.96 that beat Randy Walls' 8.22. He again had low et of round two with a 7.86 that beat Marv Eldridge's 8.25. But in the semifinal, Leonard had trouble and shut down to an 11.30 while Clare Sanders motored on to a 7.80 for the win. On May 4, they raced at the fourth annual Aquasco FC Invitational but Leonard got out of shape and lost against Frank Oglesby in the first round. They set a track record of 197.63 at Miami-Hollywood's mid-May FC race but failed to get into the finals. Back at Aquasco on May 27 for an eight car show, Hughes' 7.83-197.36 (track speed record) beat Tommy Grove's 8.10-188 in the first round. Unfortunately, Hughes fouled against Jim Liberman in the semifinal. At Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals on June 8, a 7.65-201.78 qualified fourth. In the semifinal, a low et and top speed of the meet 7.52-202.70 put Tom McEwen on the trailer. In the final he faced Danny Ongais and fouled. He was not happy. A 7.89-203.61 (top speed) qualified the team sixth at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A first round 7.58-198.67 over Cogo Eads lead to a second round meeting with Ongais. Leonard was hoping to correct his loss from the week before by dumping the MT Mustang, but in a straight up and up race, Danny's 7.64-190 beat Hughes oh so close 7.65-201.79. The Candies and Hughes team was getting known for putting up the big numbers being one of the few cars to hit 200mph consistently. An eight car show was run on July 26 at Dallas. Hughes' 7.50-206.42 beat a blower-popping Mart Higginbotham. In the semifinal, a 7.47 (low et) at 204.84 beat Dick Harrell's 7.76-196. In the final, a 7.67-207 (top speed) beat Mike Burkhart. If there was any doubt about this team, it was erased at Indy where Hughes qualified first with a 7.24 and ran 7.28-207.37 in the first round over Dick Bourgeois' 7.45 Javelin. Another run of 7.25 beat Jack Chrisman's 7.72 in the second round, but a 7.28 in the semifinal lost to Rich Siroonian's 7.25. The team still left on a high note, setting low et and top speed at 208.81. Leonard showed up at Gainesville on Sept 14 gunning for the NHRA FC speed record of 190.26. He made a 7.15-201.34 pass but blew the blower off so was unable to make any other runs. Without a backup run within 2% of his speed the old record stood.

Notes: Kendall GT-1 "Rebel." Held NHRA record with this car. Is the 215 run legit? - DW | Confirmed 7.45 at Memphis. | Bobby won the AHRA Southern Nationals at Memphis on May 31, running a 7.74-191.31 in the final. On June 28, at Miami-Hollywood, he met Paula Murphy for a best two out of three match race. In the first race, he set a 7.65 track record at 194.38 over Paula who fouled on an 8.17-189 pass. Woods won all three races with second and third runs of 7.78-191.88 and 7.73-190.66. On July 6 he was runner-up to Arnie Behling when they both ran 7.72 in the final of US 30's Grand Prix of Drag Racing. Bobby's speed was 204. The following day, they ran again at US 30 and this time he won with a 7.58-207 (top speed) after earlier setting low et at 7.49. On July 11, he faced a tough match race against Leonard Hughes at Memphis. The first race went to Woods' 7.59-191 when Hughes got out of shape. He won the second race as well with a 7.61-191.92 beating Hughes' 7.65-202. In the third race, Leonard's 7.71-195 beat Woods' 7.78 but his two wins had already won Woods the match. On Aug 3 at Shelby Raceway, he set a new NHRA record at 7.58 while beating Ed Schartman three straight. His times were 7.58-194, 7.54-191, and 7.58-190. Ed's best was a 7.97-181. Still on the match race trail, he met Sid Foster on Aug 9 at Palmetto and won three straight with a 7.56-198 winning the first race when Foster fouled on a 7.72-194 pass. Foster's Torino broke and couldn't make the final two races so Woods' ran a 7.54-180 while breaking a blower drive, and a track record 7.39 at 201. On Sept 7, he went back to Shelby Raceway for the Memphis FC 500. He ran a first round 7.62 when Frank Oglesby's Cougar broke. In the second round, a 7.50 beat Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norm Charger. In the final, his 7.45 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.50. He qualified eighth at the NHRA Nationals at Indy with a 7.45. Kelly Chadwick's 7.38-196 beat his 7.55-199.11 in the first round. At the 1,000 foot track at Southeastern Dragstrip, they held an eight-car show on Sept 28. Bobby ran a first round 6.20 over Scottie Sharp. In the semifinal, a 6.53 beat Paul Array's Cuda. But a final round 6.15 by Curtis Wasson gave Woods the runner-up spot. On Oct 19, he was at Courtland for a best of three match against Schartman's Cougar driven by Arnie Behling. Woods won all three races with 7.62, 7.64, and 7.66 times. He ran a match race at Dallas on Oct 26 against Don Garlits dragster. There was no handicap as the cars ran heads-up. Although Woods got out first in every run, he still lost all three races. As the season ended he took another win at the Turkey Trot Nationals at Gainesville on Nov 30. He set low et in the final when his 7.30-193.76 beat Joe Petruccelli. - Ron Howard

Notes: Bruce Larson was one of the best Chevrolet funny car racers of all time. The "USA-1" 1967 Camaro was the second funny campaigned by Larson. It was one of the best in the northeast. The car featured a Logghe Stage II chassis and a 427 Chevrolet engine backed by an automatic transmission. The Camaro held the NHRA National record at 7.41 seconds in 1968 when he amazed everyone at SSDI Nats with the Low ET. That run hurt the motor and Bruce had to put in backup motor for the rest of the weekend (still went rounds). The "USA-1" 67 Camaro raced until 1969. Larson now makes Exhibition runs with the restored car. (Photos provided by Mike Ditty. Info provided by James Ibusuki and draglist.com) | Won NE Dragway FC Nats in 68 at 7.71, 189.87. Bruce set both ends of Maple Grove track record with a 7.62-186.72 in Oct.

Notes: This is the second car of 69, the mini Charger. After crashing the car at the Winternationals, Roland Leong had Logghe build a new Charger and he debuted on May 30 at an eight-car show at Irwindale where Reyes set low et at 7.47 but lost his first round race when Mike Van Sant's 7.55-196 in the Invader beat his 7.65-184.80. But Reyes got back in with the break rule in effect when Johnny Wright who won his first round race broke and couldn't return for the semifinal. So the Hawaiian had the lowest et of the first round losers was brought back into the show to race Mike Van Sant again, only this time in the semis. The Invader lost fire on the line and Reyes advanced to the finals where he ran a 7.64-184.80 to win over Ron Leslie. The next day (May 31) he raced at OCIR for the FC 500. A 7.40-200.06 qualified first and a better 7.38 (low et) at 199.55 got past the first round, and another 7.38-199.11 beat Gordon Mineo in the second round. Larry got a free ride into the final when Manuel Herrera blew his motor on the line. In the final, a 7.63-200.07 (top speed) beat Randy Walls for another win. On Oct 11, the "Hawaiian" was at Irwindale for a best of three match race against the Fuel altered roadster of Sush Matsubara. Reyes won the match by winning the first two races with a 7.53-190.26 beating Sush's 7.78-194 in the first race and his 7.72-176.81 beat the out of shape roadster in the second race. Matsubara did win the last race with a 7.78-194 when the Charger lost a transmission. Larry finished the year by winning on Dec 14 at Irwindale for an eight car show. He had qualified second with a 7.45 but improved to a 7.38-193.96 in the first round over Johnny Wright's 7.59-179. In the semifinal, he set low et with a 7.27-199.10 over Ray Alley's 7.74-194. In the final, a 7.35-199.54 beat Dave Beebe.

Notes: Rick Howard photo from 1996 U.S. Nats, Indy. Force put on a virtuoso performance at Indy in winning a record-tying 11th event of the season, a 59th career win and a record sixth Winston Funny Car title. And if that wasn't enough, he also won his 4th Big Bud Shootout. Force qualified 1st (4.966 Low ET of Meet and Track Record).

Notes: Used Cordoba body after ruining Dart. Tom blew the Corboda body off this car in early 1977 and finished the season in yet another Dart. Chronology for this Cordoba is July, August 1976 through March, April 1977. Due to the notch-back roof, the car had turbulence issues on the rear deck, and just weeks after its debut, Ivo was using coat hangers(.) to keep the rear spoilers from tearing off the car. This is a true story, I witnessed it firsthand. - David Hapgood

Notes: Sold the Mustang to the Suffolk Dragway owner, who later sold it to Butch Kernodle. The Barracuda was built by Don Hardy in late 1968 for Larry Reyes. Larry ran it a few times prior to signing on to drive Roland Leong's Hawaiian. He sold the car to Paula. This photo is from Tulsa - I think there are some pictures somewhere on the internet from the '68 OCIR manufacturer's meet with Larry's name still on the car. Same paint, just different lettering. | Paula debuted the 'Cuda on May 25 at Suffolk for a match race against Lee Jones. She won two out of three races to win the match with a best of 8.03-182.92. Paula raced at the New England FC Championships at Epping on June 8, but she broke against Lew Arrington in the first round. On July 4 Paula ran 194.36 at Union Grove and shortly after this she ran 197.36 at Martin Mich. At the PHR Championships on August 2, Della Woods' 8.08-179 beat Paula's 8.11-188.67 in the first round. Paula took a big win at the New Jersey State Championships at Atco on Aug 10. The two woman met again in the first round but this time, they finished in reverse order with Murphy's 7.86-192 beating Della Woods' 8.50-174. A 7.95-195.65 beat Bruce Bohen's Buick at 8.59-160 in the semifinal. And in the final, a 7.74-190 beat a motor blowing Ken Poffenberger. On Aug 24 at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA World Championships, Paula became the first woman drag racer to break 200 mph. She ran a 7.55-200.00 in time trials. She also made it into the semifinals there before blowing an engine and losing to Dick Harrell. At Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on Oct 19, she lost to Mart Higginbotham in the first round. Another first round loss came on Oct 25 at the Lions East/West meet when Johnny Wright's 7.33-198 defeated her 8.20-191.89. Paula ran well at the Sears Point North/South Championships on Nov 2, running as quick as 7.91-192.30 over Bob Velseka's Mustang. She failed to make the finals, however. On Nov 7, a 7.62 qualified her fourth on the Chrysler team for the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet.
