Notes: Chapman Automotive built the 120" frame for the car. The Camaro body came from Fiberglass Ltd. It used an early 354 Hemi that kept its stock displacement. A factory crank was used along with M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Isky supplied the cam. An Enderle injection unit sat on the 18% overdriven blower that rested on a Cragar intake manifold. The car was run on 70% nitro. An estimated 1,200 hp was on tap. John Hogan helped maintain the engine. A Torqueflite transmission was used that fed the power back to a Ford rear axle carrying 3.90 gears. The car weighed 2,120 lbs. The cost of the project was $15,000. O'Donnell was at Gary, Indiana, for a UDRA Circuit race in August. Going into the race, he held both ends of the track record at 8.07/181. By the end of this race, he would not hold either. His 8.10/180.00 beat Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler," who blew a transmission in the first round. In the semi-final, he ran 8.11, but he lost to Doug Cook's 8.01 in the "Stone, Woods & Cooke" Mustang. Ron drove the car to 7.85/193 at Union Grove. The speed was a track record. | Gary ran 8.30/185.94, 8.36/180.72, and 8.48/181.08 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Also ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DL

Notes: "Fast Eddie" Schartman was one of the racers chosen to receive one of the Logghe-built Comet Cyclones from Ford Motor Company. Schartman had worked his way up the racing ranks before getting into funny car racing. In 1966, he was one of the top funny car racers with the advanced machines. In 1967, he was already on his third paint job when he received the Air Lift sponsorship. The Air Lift Rattler featured the updated Logghe chassis and kept on winning. With Amos Satterlee tuning, Schartman won the Manufacturer's Funny Car Championship at Orange County with runs of 8.17/184.08, 7.85/185.18 (Low ET), and 7.87/185.56. - BS | 427 SOHC, C-6 auto combo. | Ran 8.65/164 at AHRA Winters on January 29. Eddie first ran a blower late in the year at Fremont's Third Annual exhibition Car Championships in Oct. They ran 30% nitro and beat Ronnie Runyan and Pat Minick, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with an 8.20/179. He won the race beating Terry Hedrick's Corvair in the final with an 8.08 (Low ET). A week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. Eddie won this race, too. He beat Doug Thorley and Roger Lindamood in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, his 7.97/181.08 beat Butch Leal's 8.28/150. Schartman faced Ron O'Donnell in the final, and he set Low ET with a 7.93 at 181.36 to win. He was at Lions in the first week of November for the East-West Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, he exploded a blower in the opening round and lost to Leal. He wasn't down and out for long as he then won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. All cars ran three rounds of racing, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. An opening round 8.17/184.04 beat Leal's 8.22/176. His second round 7.85/185.18 won over Thorley, and a 7.87/185.56 in round three assured him a spot in the final. There he faced surprise finalist Roy Gay. - Ron Howard Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA 11/25/67

Notes: Won IHRA Longhorn Nationals at Dallas International Motor Speedway in early June by defeating Pat Foster. Richard ran 6.37/225.00 against Pat's 6.40/227.27. Came out with flamed paint job later in the year. Ran 6.671/213.27 at Tulsa PRA National Challenge 8/72. | Tharp won the Miami Funny Car race on Jan 9. It was a sixteen-car field and in the final, the "Max" dropped Jerry Jokerst's Firebird. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, almost 40 cars showed for the sixteen spots and Tharp headed the list of qualifiers with a 6.70. In the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.57 beating Jerry Ruth. Unfortunately, he got out of shape in the second round and crossed the centerline while racing Gene Snow. The team did a lot of match racing for a cash guarantee, but when they showed up at the national events, they were a team worth watching. On March 6 they were at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Harry Schmidt and Tharp woke up to find that someone had "borrowed" their transporter. The police found it in time for the team to race, but a complete engine plus an extra blower and injector were gone. They had to borrow parts to race. After piecing together an engine, Richard goes out and runs a 6.62, good enough for the pole. A first-round 6.81 beat Jake Johnston's 6.87. In round two the "Max" got a solo when Don Schumacher broke a rear end. In the semifinals, a 6.61 (Low ET) beat a crossed up Arnie Behling in the "Ramchargers" Demon. In the final, Tharp grabbed the victory with a 6.86 over Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto.

Notes: Ed had the most dominant funny car during 1972, winning the NHRA Winternationals, Gatornationals, Springnationals, and Nationals. He also won the Bakersfield March Meet, driving his former car, the Jim Murphy owned "Holy Smokes" Cuda, and was the runner-up to Don Schumacher at the NHRA Summernationals. He also won the huge Seattle Seafair Funny Car Nationals in August. This car made its debut at Fremont on January 2 for the New Year's Funny Car race. On its first full pass it ran a 6.9. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94, but he lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. At the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, 40 Funny Cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Ed ran 6.71 to qualify #2. He beat Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's Vega in the first round, but lost to Pat Foster driving Barry Setzer's Vega in round two. He won the NHRA Winternationals by qualifying #6 with a 6.93/213 and beating Jerry Ruth's 6.96/209 in the first round, with a 6.90/218. In round two, he set Low ET with a 6.65/217.91 over Butch Maas' 6.84/216. Ed had an easy run in the semifinals when Jake Johnston fouled against him. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Pulde had problems and slowed to a 7.22 while McCulloch scored the victory with a 6.68/215.82. He drove his old car to a win at the Bakersfield March Meet. He was back in the Demon the following week (March 12) at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Ed lasted until round two before he got out of shape and lost to Harrison. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.65 qualified #3 and in the opening round his 6.63/220.04 beat Lew Arrington's 6.74/213. That was followed by a 6.69 in round two over Joe Jacono's 6.87 and he got a solo in the semifinal when the Setzer Vega caught fire behind the line and was unable to run. He faced Larry Arnold in the final and McCulloch ran 6.54/224.43 to take the victory over Arnold's 6.68/218. The month of April started with a visit to Miami-Hollywood for its Big Go South race. It was an eight-car field and Ed qualified #1 with a 6.87/208. He beat Harry Hudson in round one, and he set a track record 6.71 in the semifinals while beating Paul Smith. He definitely had the edge in the final where he beat Ed O'Brien for the money. He then went to West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he ended up in the final, but this time he lost to Bill Leavitt. He was runner-up again at OCIR's Big Four Championships in early May. It was a 32 car show and Ed started his run to the final by beating Bob Hawkins in the "Blue Blazer" Pinto. In round two, he beat another Pinto, the "Keeling and Clayton" car driven by Tom Ferraro. In round three, Mert Littlefield broke on the line against him. McCulloch then ran 6.98/197.36 to turn back Twig Zeigler and move into the final where he faced the killer car of Setzer. Pat Foster had driven it to a track record 6.52 in the semifinals so Ed was the underdog for their race. Sure enough, Foster shot to a 6.65/225 for the win as Ed smoked the tires and had to settle for the runner-up. On the final day of the Drag Racing Olympics race at Union Grove, Ed was running well. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals with a 6.52/216.86 and was set to race Don Prudhomme in the final when the "Snake" lost fire. McCulloch soloed for the win with a 6.50/217.91. He ran at the AHRA Springnationals in Denver, but failed to reach the finals. Things went much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.78 and an opening round 6.73 beat Gary Henderson in the "Super Duster.” In round two his 6.79/206 beat Jake Johnston in Gene Snow's second car and a shut off 7.99 advanced in the semifinals when Foster fouled. This put Ed into the final with Leonard Hughes who qualified #2. In their race, Hughes got the jump and it looked like that was it for Ed, but the Cajun 'Cuda started to smoke the tires and McCulloch's 6.85/217.39 got the win light over Hughes' 7.08/196. 1972 NHRA Supernationals, OMS

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1981. This one is wild, here it goes guys: old mag (I believe Hot Rod) had Jim driving for Mike very early in the year at a match race in SoCal. It specifically mentioned that the 5.85 he ran was identical to Mike's 5.85 (within a month or so of one another). Both runs were considered suspect by their competitors. | Video shows the actual run, including the scoreboard and announcer claiming the run was the quickest in history. Raced against Prudhomme's yellow Pepsi Challenger. | Jim drove Roland Leong's car at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in Jan while Mike was on tour in Australia. He ran the 5.85 and made it to the final where he faced Bob Pickett. Bob won with a 6.25 over Jim's off-pace 6.99.

Notes: Dennis was from Alaska, but the car was housed in Phoenix. Tripp's '76 season consisted of 65 races. The car averaged 6.61 in 125 passes and won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade title. In the sixteen race series, he won three races and was runner-up eight times. The best NHRA national event times were 6.137/228.42 at the Pomona Winters. | Saw this car at the 1976 SIR 64 Funny Car event, completed in the overcast daytime in a rush. It was my last chance to see some early 70s type FCs (Halibrands in front, 6.71s, steel motors.) The CC Cavalcade ran their own bracket, Shumake over Custy. - Joe Moore

Notes: McEwen ran this car twice during the first ten days of January 1971. At Irwindale Raceway's "New Year's Day Funny Car Championship," he was runner-up to Jim Dunn, and at Lions, during the first AHRA Grand American of the year. At Lions, the Goose had Low ET of the Meet with a questionable 6.55. This car was soon replaced with Tom's 1971 ride, a Ramchargers-powered John Buttera Duster. | 5/71 HRM coverage said the dicey 6.55 was an early shut-off at 198.23! True, not intentional on the 'Goose's part. The story was written, without skepticism, by none other than the renowned Ralph Gudahl (sp.) Jr, with vernacular, apostrophe-absent, driver quotations verging on Ring Lardner's gerund-eliminating speech. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ran 6.12/238.09 at NHRA Indianapolis IN 9/78. Pat qualified #8 at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.18/236.22. He set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.083/236.22 over a troubled Bob Pickett. But in round two, his 6.23/239.36 lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle's 6.15/233 in the "Blue Max." Pat was at the OCIR Funny Car Spectacular held on June 10. In the second round, he ran 6.26/244.98 to beat Jeff Courtie's 6.74/206.89. Was that in the Pisano car or the Super Shops car?

Notes: The "Hawaiian" qualified #9 at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, which meant that Colson had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the opening round. Don's 6.23 put Ron's 6.32 on the trailer. The team was really running well at Sacramento for the Governor's Cup Championships. Colson ran a 6.16 on his way to a final-round meeting with Gordie Bonin. In the final, he improved to 6.14/226 to win over Bonin's 6.20. In Ontario for the NHRA World Finals, Ron's 6.18/225.56 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.24 beat Bonin, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.66 in a loss to Ed McCulloch. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.184 at Ontario and 230.17 at Seattle (plus a nice 6.191 at Indy). South Chicago Auto Parts sponsored.

Notes: The car that broke the Corvette curse. Also 6.14/233.76 at 77 US Nats. Won IHRA Winternationals 1977. Ran 6.11 at Milan, 6.37 at Gainesville, 6.18 at Columbus, 6.14 at Englishtown, and 6.14 at Indy. | Tom debuted his Corvette at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The car failed to qualify, but it was awarded "Best Appearing Professional Car." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #6, but broke on the line in round two, advancing Roger Lindamood. Things went a little better for the "Goose" the following week (March 20) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and the field was "weak,", but Tom's Corvette ran well. He qualified #2 with a 6.79/216 behind Shirl Greer, but he soloed with a 9.47 when Wilfred Boutilier was shut off on the line with an oil leak. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.62/216.86 that beat Pete Miner's 7.48 in his Duster. In the final, he ran Greer. Shirl had problems and slowed while McEwen ran a 6.65/216.86 for the victory. A week later (March 27), he was in another final. This time it was at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. He lost in the final, but it wasn't too bad as how many cars were outrunning Don Prudhomme at the time? His 6.33/229.59 lost to the "Snake's" 6.20/240. On May 1, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to Dick Bourgeois driving the Creasy Brothers car in the first round. He was runner-up to Dale Pulde at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 21. On the Memorial Day weekend of May 29 and 30, Tom was at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. All cars ran the first-round with the four lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. McEwen's 6.28 made the semis where he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" with a 6.16/227.27. In the final, he faced Tommy Ivo and McEwen got the victory with a 6.26/190.67. The next day, they did it again and once again Tom qualified for the semifinals, this time with a 6.36. He met Prudhomme in his semifinal race and lost to Don's 6.15/205. The following weekend (June 5), he was at Amarillo for the IHRA World Nationals. He beat Shirl Greer before losing to Ray Sherman in the semifinals. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.18 qualified #5. Tom failed to reach the finals. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove of July 4. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET), and advanced past the first-round with a 6.55/171.75 when Ken Safford fouled in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the semifinals, he beat Tom Prock's 6.52/206 with a 6.34/214.28. In the all Corvette final, Tom ran Jerry Boldenow's "Moby Dick." McEwen's 6.28/218.97 came out on top over Jerry's 6.47/225. That was Tom's first win ever in IHRA competition. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, qualifying #2 to Prudhomme with a 6.14/233.16. His only other pass in qualifying was a 6.23. He beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a tire smoking 7.13, but he lost to Sherman in round two when he smoked the tires again to a 7.45. McEwen ran at York US 30 on July 16 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified #1 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.13. In the first round, a 6.24 beat Boldenow's 6.38. In the semifinals, Tom stepped up to a strong 6.11 and still lost to Gary Burgin's 6.13. On July 31, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.31/224 qualified #2 behind Tom Hoover. In the first round his 6.31/214.79 beat Gene Snow's 6.68/185. Unfortunately, McEwen broke and was unable to run in the semifinals, so Snow got reinstated. He competed at Atco for its Fuel Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs with the two lowest ETs coming back for the final. Tom lost his first race to Les Cassidy's 6.63 with an off pace 8.93. He won his second race with a 6.68/174 over Arnie Swensen's 6.78/193. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. On August 21, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #2 with a 6.29, but in round one, his fuel pump broke and opponent Bill Leavitt advanced. At the US Nationals at Indy, McEwen qualified #6 with a 6.14/230.17. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.45/200 in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 6.20/228. In the second round, his 6.24/233.76 lost to Burgin's 6.08/236. He went to Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals on September 18. A 6.48 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he slipped to a 6.60 that lost to Tom Prock's 6.44. He did not go to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals.

Notes: Set the national record at 5.900 at 1981 Mile High nationals (altitude factored from a 6.124). Ran first five with a 5.993 at Gainesville 3/15/81 to become the 7th member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. We need to confirm that this was a Mike Kase car. | Kenny started the season well by winning the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson on January 18. He qualified #2 with a 6.69/196, and in the first round, he picked up to a 6.56/211 to beat Tom Hoover's 6.85/209. In the semifinals, he ran 6.56 again at 213 to beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. In the final, he unleashed Low ET (traction was poor) 6.54/214 to take the win over low qualifier Gordie Bonin's 6.68/202. Kenny barely made the field at Pomona on February 1 for the NHRA Winternationals, qualifying #15. He lost to Denny Savage in the first round. That should have been it for his Pomona story, but in the semifinals, his Texas neighbors, the "Blue Max" team, had blown off its roof on a 245 mph run that beat Prudhomme. They had no spare body, so Bernstein offered up his spare. The "Max" team cut the roof off of his car and grafted it onto theirs. All that effort, and they lost to Billy Meyer in the final. On March 8, Kenny was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. A 6.426/226.13 qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, the race was postponed one week due to rain, and he could not return the following week. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 6.014/245.90. He beat Ron Colson's 6.06/233 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 5.993/238.72. He advanced past Prudhomme in round two when the "Snake" got crossed up. In the semifinal, he lost to Bonin. A week later (March 22), he was in the winner's circle at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET at 6.18 and beat Shirl Greer and Dale Pulde to reach the final. In the final, he ran the team he helped at Pomona, the Raymond Beadle-driven "Blue Max." Kenny took the victory with a 6.45/212. On April 5, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. It was an eight-car show, and Kenny's 6.27/233.76 qualified #2. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.15/240.00 that beat Brian Conway. In the semifinals, a 6.45/209.79 lost to Beadle's 6.25/228. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta also had an eight-car field. It was a tough show to make with a 6.16 "bump." A 6.09/241.28 qualified Bernstein #3. He made his way to the finals by beating Meyer in the first round, with a 6.08/242.58, and in the semifinals, Prudhomme broke against him. In the final, he faced Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. It was a close race, but Tripp's 6.07/233 beat Kenny's 6.08/243.90 (Top Speed). May 3 found the "Budweiser King" team at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #2 with a 6.03 and won his first-round race over Paul Smith with a 6.14/231.36. In the semifinal, his 6.28/226.70 lost to Meyer's 6.26/213.77. OCIR hosted the NHRA Western Regional on May 9. Things didn't go well there. It was an eight-car show with a soft "bump" of only 6.47. The "Budweiser King" failed to qualify. After that, it was off to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/245.90 (Top Speed) qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He faced low qualifier Beadle in the first round, smoked the tires, and lost. Kenny ended May with a runner-up finish to Meyer at the IHRA World Nationals. He did come away with Low ET at 5.97. At the NHRA Springnationals, Kenny qualified #5 with a 6.12/239.36. This set up an interesting first-round race with his eventual crew chief, Dale Armstrong. Bernstein won that first-round race with a 6.18/238, but he didn't get much further when his round two 6.21/233.16 lost to Beadle's 6.15/235. Kenny did really well in the thin air of Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.17/217.91; in the first round, his 6.24/227.84 beat Shumake's 6.28/228. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 6.12/238.72, beating John Collins' 6.49/189. In the final, he ran the "Blue Max." Bernstein won a 6.21/234.37 over Beadle's 6.32/202. The "Budweiser King" really opened some eyes at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where Kenny pushed the car to a 5.860 at 237.46 in qualifying. Of course, that was Low ET and a new track record. He beat Smith in round two with a 6.08/238.72, while a tire-smoking 6.38/225.56 advanced in round two when Frank Hawley broke in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Unfortunately, a semifinal 6.24/233.76 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.19/230. He lost to Prudhomme again the following week at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. Only this time, it was in the final. The Budweiser team then returned to Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals in early August. Kenny qualified #3 with a 6.14, and then in the first round, his off-pace 6.70 lost to Smith's 6.50. But Paul's Citation broke while getting the win and could not run the semifinals, so Kenny got back into the show. A 6.30/232.55 beat Meyer, who smoked the tires. He ran the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle won, running 6.20/238 to Bernstein's 6.30/221.67. A week later (August 9), he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Kenny's 6.07/241.93 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He beat Tom Anderson and Beadle to reach the final, where he faced Prudhomme again. This time, Bernstein got out of shape and shut off to 14.01/55.14, giving the "Snake" the win at 7.18. The next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. It was another eight-car show, and things didn't look so good when he qualified on the "bump" with a 6.32. His 6.35/225.80 beat Hawley's 6.39/217 in the opening round. In the semifinals, he advanced when Gary Burgin broke. The final featured Bernstein versus Armstrong, but Dale had broken in his semifinal win, so Bernstein soloed for the victory. A week later (August 23), these two would meet again in the final at the NHRA Eastern Regional at Beech Bend. They qualified 1/2, with Armstrong's 6.10/223 leading and Bernstein chasing with a 6.18/222.22. A first-round 6.35/219.51 beat Fuzz Miller's 6.63/190. Kenny's 6.19/217.39 in the semifinals beat John Pott's 6.27/217. That put the two into the final, where Kenny improved to 6.14/234.98 to take the victory over Armstrong's 6.24/235. Then came the US Nationals at Indianapolis. Bernstein ran an impressive 247.25 while qualifying in the dreaded #9 spot. This set up a first-round pairing with low qualifier Beadle. They had a good race, but Raymond's 6.02/246 won over Kenny's 6.09/241.28. Beadle would go on to win the race. Bristol was next on the calendar for the IHRA US Open. Bernstein's track record 5.98 at 242.58 qualified #1 in the eight-car show. In the first round, Burgin smoked the tires, and Kenny's 6.10/220.04 advanced. In the semifinals, he had a blower explode that ripped the roof and windshield off the car. His 6.36/197.80 lost to eventual winner Pott's 6.07/234 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." NHRA held its final Western Regional race at Houston on September 20. Only five cars showed, and Kenny's 13-second time qualified last. In the first round, he and Shumake had a tire smoker that saw his 6.75/185.95 beat Tripp's slightly quicker 6.74/213. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.25/218.44 over Miller's right there at 6.28/229. This put the "Budweiser King" into another final. But this time, a tire-smoking 10.80/79.00 lost to Burgin's 6.49/220. The year was winding down, and Bernstein wanted to move up in the NHRA points standings. Going into the Golden Gate Nationals, he was second in points with 6,070 behind Beadle's 7,062. Prudhomme followed these two with 5,772 points. But Fremont was not good to the points chasers. Twenty-five cars were attempting to qualify for the 16-car field. While Beadle qualified and made it into the semifinals, neither Bernstein nor Prudhomme made the show! Kenny was the fifth alternate with a 6.22/207.85 best. On his last qualifying attempt, he blew a motor. That pretty much ended his hopes in the points chase. Things went even worse at the season-ending NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Bernstein could do no better than the sixth alternate with a 6.27/188.28 best. Prudhomme snuck past him in points, and Bernstein finished third for the year. The NHRA season might have ended, but a whole new chapter in the Bernstein story was about to begin. It started at OCIR on November 7 for the Manufacturer's Meet. For the first time, Armstrong came on board as crew chief. While the results were not immediately felt, it was the start of a super team. Bernstein won his first race with a 6.56/211 over Dave Condit, and in his second race, he smoked the tires and lost to Mike Dunn. The track was not at its best, as Low ET was 5.98 by Billy Meyer. Formerly listed a 250 mph run at an AHRA national event. We need confirmation of that and using the Indy 247.25 until we get it.

Notes: Tony qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.10/295.37 behind Cruz Pedregon's 4.93/307. In the opening round, he was upset by Richard Hartman's 5.04/297, which defeated his 5.11/300.50. He then went to Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.17/297.52 qualified #5. In the first round, his 5.14/296.54 beat Dean Skuza's 5.24/280, but he lost to Kenji Okazaki in round two. He qualified #5 again at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.12/291.45. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. The next NHRA event was the Slick 50 Nationals at Houston. He slipped to #12 in qualifying with a 5.23/297.02. A slightly better 5.21/283.46 beat Hartman in round one, and a 5.12/300.40 (Top Speed) beat Gary Densham's 5.38/244 in round two. Despite running a strong 5.15/300.30 in the semi-final, he lost to car owner John Force's 5.02/273. Shortly after that, Tony was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was only an eight-car field, and his 5.14/284.90 qualified #4. In the first round, his 5.26/285.53 fell to Del Worsham's 5.21/281. The following week, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #6 at 5.15/275.81. In round one, his 5.11/300.50 took out Skuza's 5.23/279. A 5.12/298.30 dropped Densham's 5.32/265 in round two, and in the semi-final, a 5.05/296.73 took care of Whit Bazemore's 5.34/286. He faced Force in the final, and Pedregon ran 5.10/294.59 to get the victory over his boss's 5.31/275. He then went to Richmond in the first week of May for the NHRA Virginia Nationals, where he hoped to score another win. He qualified #4 with a 5.09/291.54. A off-pace 5.56/269.78 ended any chance in the first round, where he lost to Brad Platt's 5.32/238. Tony was the fifth member of the Castrol Four Second Club on July 5, 1996, with a 4.971 at Topeka, Kan. Tony's best times of the year came in a 4.909/208.64 #1 qualifying effort at NHRA Ennis Fall.

Notes: Dick Poll was hired to drive the Gas Ronda Mustang for '70. Not much news was made by the team, and it faded late in '70. Gas Ronda ran the Irwindale New Year's Day race and beat Dave Beebe in the first round with a 7.43/196.06. A second-round wheelstand ended his chances against Johnny Wright. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on January 4, Gas qualified eighth with a 7.60, but he blew his transmission, and non-qualifier Don Schumacher took his place in the race. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, Ronda was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he failed to better the 7.57 "bump." On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, Ronda took his last ride in a Funny Car during qualifying; a transmission exploded near the end of a run, and he was severely burnt. He had third-degree burns to over 30% of his body. Ronda was taken to Orange Country Medical Centre. He survived, but that was it for Fuel Funny Cars for Gas Ronda. Jim Tice chose to hold a benefit race at Beeline Dragway on April 11 to help raise funds for Ronda. Tice's words, "It is inconceivable to me that a man that has made the contribution to our sport over the last ten years such as Gas Ronda has, should possibly wind up his career with only unpaid bills to show for it." Contributions poured in; the first was from Kelsey Producy=ts, who was not even a sponsor of Ronda's. Ed Pink donated to the cause, as did Anton Racing Apparel, Logghe Competition, Quaker State, Dow Chemicals, B&M Transmissions, Goodyear, Cyclone Automotive, Conelec Fuel Pump, Bill Hielscher and Associates, JR Headers, and Carter Carburetors. It was good to see such an outpouring of support for Ronda. | Ronda retired after a career-ending fire at the AHRA Winter Nationals at Beeline Dragway, Arizona. This occurred in January 1970. The photo shows the car's '69 iteration before the grill was updated to 1970 specs. - RT

Notes: The team did not race at any NHRA national events this season. We need to validate this ET. Thi Chi-Town car seems to be credited with a 6.18 in several consecutive years.

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Nicoll didn't have the success in '74 that he enjoyed in '73. Jim qualified #7 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.44. He beat Gordie Bonin's 6.73 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.49/225.00. He advanced past the second round when Sush Matsubara broke on the line. In the semifinal, a 6.37/230.17 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.41/230, but, unfortunately for Jim, he broke and was unable to make the final, reinstating Prudhomme. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.87 qualified #12, but an opening round 6.83/212.76 lost to Paul Smith's 6.65/221 in the "Fireball Vega." The team was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim’s quick-leaving 6.71/211.76 beat Pat Foster's 6.66/215 in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn in round two. He fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals at the AHRA Grand American held at Dragway 42 in May. Nicoll failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals.

Notes: Neil was at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race in January. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. An opening round 6.33/218.97 beat Gary Densham, but in round two, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" into the semifinals. The team then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals and qualified #1 with a 6.32 (Low ET). In the first round, he beat a motor-blowing Gordie Bonin with a 6.46/189.86. He got past a fouling Dale Pulde in the "Eastern Raider" in the second round, and a semifinal 6.72/199.10 beat Billy Meyer in Gene Snow's Vega. In the final, he ran Shirl Greer, and both had some traction problems, but Greer's 7.03/218 beat Neil's 7.08/220.58 for the win. Jim Terry and Leffler were hoping for more good fortune at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Once again, they qualified well, with a 6.333/225.56, taking the #6 position. In the first round, Neil slowed to a 6.88 that lost to Gary Burgin's 6.40. But Gary had crossed the centerline and was disqualified, and Leffler was back in the show. He didn't hang around for long, though, as he lost to a 6.37 pass by Don Prudhomme in round two. At the AHRA Grand American West at OCIR in March, 17 cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car show. Neil qualified #3 with a 6.66. A 7.21/196.50 beat a motor-blowing Bryan Raines in the first round, but his off-pace 7.56 in round two lost to Jim Dunn's 7.08. In May, Prudhomme reset the track record at Fremont with a 6.24, but Neil Leffler and Jim Terry amazed all by snatching it from him with a 6.18. By Indy, Neil was driving the California Charger car.

Notes: Who had the strongest Donovan-powered Funny Car in '75? It had to be a toss-up between Leavitt and John Lombardo. Bill was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 with a 6.66 but lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, his low qualifying 6.21 held for Low ET. He made it into the semifinals before he smoked the tires to a 6.72 that lost to Mike Miller's 6.44 in the "Green Elephant." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bill qualified #14 with a 6.57. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.59/159 that lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.73/211 in the "Blue Max." Shortly after this, he was at the Englishtown Opener, where he got crossed-up against Tom Prock in the first round, and shut off. In April, he was at the NHRA Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins. He qualified #4 but failed to reach the finals. His next stop was at the Cecil County National Open. He made it to the final by beating Tom Raley (George of the Jungle) in the first round, and running an easy single in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Joe Jacono, and Leavitt's troubled 9.50 got the runner-up spot to Jacono's 6.86. Back at Maple Grove for the fifth annual Dutch Classic, Bill went into a huge wheelstand against Al Segrini in the first round, and shut down. Leavitt was at Atco for the CARS Magazine Meet in May. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, he beat Jacono's 7.15/213 with a 7.12/204.08. In the semifinals, his Mustang broke and coasted to a 10.27/86 loss to Segrini's 6.55/200. In June, he went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he failed to qualify for the show. Shortly after that, he beat Jacono in the final to win the New England Funny Car Championships. He qualified #1 for the eight-car show with a 6.75/183, and in round one, his 6.46/205.47 beat Jacono. A semifinal 6.45/205.94 beat Jimmy King's 7.10/197 and moved him into the final. Jacono was to be his final round opponent as he had gotten back into the show on the "break rule" when Dodger Glenn had his throttle stick open in the first round, and ended up smoking the pistons in the "Frantic Ford." Bill really picked up in the final, running a track record 6.28 at 212.26 to claim the victory over Joe's 6.77/182. Later in the month, he went to Suffolk, where he reset the track record to 6.18. Near the end of June, he was back in New England for a Wednesday night race. While he didn't win or reach the final, he was right in the thick of things, running 6.46/197. The month of July didn't start out the greatest for Leavitt as he went up to Canada for the Gold Cup Championships held at Cayuga and lost all three of his races. All the cars were to make three passes, and on Leavitt's first race, his 6.62/215.82 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.59/221. In his second race, he ran 6.84/194.80, but Don Prudhomme beat him to the finish line with a 6.76/205. For the last race, he faced Tommy Grove, but the "Quickie Too" broke on the line. He qualified #10 with a 6.50/216.34 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he lost fire on the line in the first round, giving Gary Burgin a single into round two. Leavitt won the Connecticut Summer Funny Car Championships. He had a little luck along the way. An opening round 6.63/210.77 beat Jacono's 6.91/193, but in the semifinals, his 7.08/215.31 lost to Segrini's 6.91/166. These two would race again in the final when Kosty Ivanof broke after winning his semifinal race. Bill returned via the "break rule." He beat Segrini's 6.63/209 in the "Black Magic" Vega with a 6.49/215.82. Bill used the same old 1971 Blair chassis with a new body.

Notes: First year for Castrol, and first year for NHRA National event wins. Photo from Columbus 1987. Also ran 5.453 at same Ennis race. | John started the season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing race at Firebird Raceway on January 18. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.79, a tenth behind Kenny Bernstein. In the first round his 5.87/244.56 beat Gary Densham, who went into tire shake and shut off. In the semifinals, he improved to 5.73/247.93 to beat a tire smoking Tom McEwen. This put him into the final against Bernstein. Kenny had run 5.72 in his semifinal race and had lane choice. The two had a good race, but Force ran his best of the meet, a 5.70/252.80 to win, while Bernstein made his worse run, a 5.78/243. Things did not go so well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. John blew up two superchargers in qualifying, finally getting a 5.67/260.94 run in for the #9 spot in the field. He faced low qualifier Bernstein in the first round, and lost when his third supercharger exploded. Things looked to be going in the same direction at the NHRA Gatornationals when once again a blower exploded in qualifying, but crew chief Austin Coil got it figured out and John qualified #6 with a 5.66/254.59. A first-round 5.62/261.24 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two, his 5.69/257.58 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.58/265.

Tripp qualified #7 at Fremont at 6.036/240.64, but rocketed to a 5.940/250.00 to beat a fouling Dale Pulde in round one, (5.99/233). Trip lost to Frank Hawley in round two, 5.89/239 to 6.048/241.93. Tripp qualified #5 at the World Finals at 5.975/229.59. In round one, he unloaded a 5.834/232.55 to take out Tim Grose at 6.67/157. In round two, he beat Don Prudhomme, 6.487/231.95 to 16.28/36. He beat Frank Hawley in the semis, 6.039/226.69 to 6.18/218, while team owner Billy Meyer was losing to Kenny Bernstein. In the final Tripp sealed the deal with a 5.864/243.24 win over Bernstein at 6.23/223. He was let go after winning the World Finals. Notes: 1968 Charger designed by Gary Dyer with a dragster-type roll cage, built by Race Car Specialties. Campaigned during '68 season and burned to the ground in late '68 at US 30 (Gary, Ind.) due to oil filter coming off the engine, catching fire, and injuring Gary Dyer. Ran 7.47/196 on that pass. Also ran 7.46/195.87 at NY National 68. | Norm Kraus and driver Gary Dyer were a tough act to beat in the early years of Funny Car racing. The '65, '66, and '67 seasons saw the team beat every superstar at one time or another. Then came '68. It was not a good year for the "Mr. Norm" team. It started well enough with Dyer driving the new Charger into the high sevens with ease. It looked like the start of another successful season. Then came the trouble. While racing in Texas, the motor blew and Gary got the car stopped and got out OK, but then for no known reason, the car caught fire. It burned to the ground as once the magnesium caught fire, there was no putting it out. All that was left was the bare chassis. So, while Dyer set about rebuilding the car, they hired a local driver to drive the '67 mount. That didn't go so well when the driver lost control of the car at Cordova and smacked it into a telephone pole. The driver was seriously injured and the car was totaled. After this, the team was out of racing for a short while as they had no car. Then came the oil filter incident at Gary US 30 mentioned above.

Notes: John made his driving debut in the "Blue Max" at Pomona by qualifying #1 for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.68/255.68. He improved to a 5.66/254 in the first round, to beat John Collins. The 5.66 held up for a new NHRA record. He slipped to a 5.76/253 in the second round that lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.73/252. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.71/253.66. A first-round 5.77/251.81 beat Tim Grose and in round two, his 5.80/251 took out Tom McEwen. He advanced into the final by beating Dale Pulde in the semifinal with a 5.76/255. He met Kenny Bernstein in the final and John had trouble and shut off to a 13.10-67.17 while Kenny got the victory with a 5.70/254. It was at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta that car owner Raymond Beadle debuted his new aerodynamic Mustang. The car ran well; John qualified it #4 with a 5.85/248.75. He made it all the way to the semifinals before losing a rod just off the line in his race against McCulloch. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, Lombardo's best of 5.96/241.02 only qualified #12. He lost to John Force in the first round. Things went even worse at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where the best he could run in qualifying was a 6.01/242.06 for the #14 spot on the grid. Billy Meyer took him out in the first round. At the end of June, the "Blue Max" team went up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. They qualified better running a 5.82/255.82 for the #8 spot. But Lombardo lost early. The next NHRA race was the Summernationals at Englishtown in mid-July. John qualified on the "bump" with a 5.97/239, but he lost in the first round, to Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." They made the trip to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals in early August and qualified #5. A first-round 5.92/252.10 advanced, but Lombardo lost to Meyer in the second round. John lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round, at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He ran 6.10/241.93 to qualify #12 there. At Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, he lost to Collins in the first round, after qualifying #9 with a 5.88/247.93. He made enough points to qualify for the Big Bud Shootout, but in the first round, of the eight-car event run in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals, he had problems and shut off against McCulloch. After having such a bad year, Indy turned things around for the team. Lombardo qualified #8 with a 5.74/256.99. In the first round, he recorded a 5.78/252 while beating Jim White. In the second round, his 5.77/250.55 beat Johnson, and another 5.77 at 252.66 beat Bernstein's 5.82/257 in the semifinals. In the final, they faced a tough competitor in Pulde. Dale was having one of his best seasons ever driving his new Buick Regal FC. But in the final, the "Max" prevailed with a 5.78/252.38 getting the victory over Pulde's 5.83/213. That was the highlight of the year for the team. After that, they went to Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships, where John qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. The team didn't go to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but did go to Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. John qualified #4 with a 5.72/247 and beat McCulloch in the first round. A great 5.68/249.30 in the second round lost to Pulde's 5.67/250. On September 29, Lombardo made it into the final at the IHRA World Nationals. He got there after winning a semifinal race with Jim Head where both ran 5.80 (Lombardo at 251). Unfortunately, the "Max" broke in the final, giving Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car an easy win. On October 6, the team elected to run at Darlington for the IHRA Stroh's Nationals rather than at the NHRA Fallnationals that was being run the same day. John qualified #2 behind Bernstein and lasted until the second round where he smoked the tires and lost to Paul Smith. At Pomona for the season ending NHRA World Finals, Lombardo qualified #9 with a 5.78/233.40. He lost to Bernstein in the first round.

Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64 car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division Six opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: John ran 6.63/187.10 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He qualified #13 at 6.39/217.39 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and lost to John Collins in the first round. On April 9, John was at Irwindale testing his new Milodon engine he had just installed in his three-year-old car the morning of this race. He had no intention of running in competition, but the field was one car short. He ended up winning the race. He ran 6.28 and 6.23 on the way to the final. He ran Eddie Pauling, who had set Low ET with a 5.97 in Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but John's 6.09/216 got him the victory over Eddie's 6.25/208. John was low qualifier at the Cajun Nationals at 6.42/213.27. He fouled and lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. John qualified #6 at Columbus at 6.190/220.58 and won round one at 6.27 over Stan Bowman's 6.37. He lost to Meyer again in round two, 6.30 to 6.37. John won the NHRA Division 7 race on May 5 with a 6.12. (BP was in attendance at that race). Qualified #10 at Indy at 6.202/231.95 but lost to Gary Burgin in round one, 6.02 to 6.59. Qualified #8 at Seattle at 6.38/216.86 and improved to a 6.30/211 win over Gary Saindon in round one. But Gary Cochran beat John in round two. Qualified #10 at the World Finals at 6.22/228.42 but could not start in round one, and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.06. John did win the OCIR Funny Car 500 in May (Bill was there). And he won the 64 car event in Irwindale with a 6.09. | At the '77 64 FCs at SIR, Lombardo did some dry hops in front of the spectator side stands. - Joe Moore
