Notes: Kenji started the season by pushing Jim Dunn's car to a 5.25/278.46 to qualify #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires in the first round, with Hoover's 8.45/150 beating Okazaki's shut off 11.42/73.87. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.29/280.46 qualified #9. He beat Whit Bazemore in the first round, with a 5.30/268.09, but an even better 5.27/267.05 in round two lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.13/289. The NHRA Supernationals at Houston was not a good outing for Dunn and Okazaki. They qualified #8 with a 5.30/267.45. Kenji went back out to try to better his time and had a motor blow. The resulting fire wrecked the body and they were unable to run in eliminations. The team was unable to repair in time for the NHRA Gatornationals, but they were back in action at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. Unfortunately, a best of 6.16/155.44 failed to qualify. Kenji qualified at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in May. His 5.43/261.62 qualified #9. More bad luck set in when he broke in the first round, against Gordon Mineo. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenji ran 5.27/262.92 to qualify #10. A 5.23/269.13 advanced past the first-round when Bazemore broke(?). He lost to Chuck Etchells in round two.

Notes: Pedregon started the season at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January He and crew chief Lee Beard made six passes with a best of 5.33/272.06. Tire shake killed three runs, but the other two were 5.52/257.28 and 5.39/269.29. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Cruz set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 5.10/285.26. He eased to 5.87/170.68 in the first round, when Jerry Caminito broke, but in the second round, his 5.20/286.44 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.12/284 in Joe Pisano's car. The following week, he was in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a track record 5.07 at 284.18. He went on to win the race by beating Tom Hoover with a 5.13/288.00, Kenji Okazaki with a 5.13/289.01 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, his 5.20/287.90 took out Del Worsham's 5.27/283. In the final, he faced Jim Epler, and Cruz won with a 5.21/263.31 over Epler's troubled 9.56/89.65. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. Cruz qualified #4 with a 5.14/286.16. Once again, Cruz ran well, running 5.15/279.50 in the opening round over Worsham and a 5.22/277.26 beat Chuck Etchells' identical 5.22/276 in round two. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 5.17/281.09 in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.04/294. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.20/285.71 qualified #6. He beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.29/280.72, but a 5.27/250.83 lost to Force's 5.09/292 in round two.

Notes: Rookie Year, NHRA Champ in 1992 (winning 5 straight races). Also first funny car in the 5.0 zone with a 5.077 qualifier at Maple Grove 9/92, followed by a 5.076 in eliminations. | Cruz started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.20/287.08 (Top Speed). He beat Gordon Mineo in the first round, with a 5.22/286.89, but in round two, his Cutlass broke against Mark Sievers. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.34/279.06. A 5.33/269.78 beat Jerry Caminito in round one, but in round two his engine let go on the line against Johnny West. After breaking in the second round at the first two NHRA events, Pedregon did much better at Houston for the Supernationals. In qualifying, his 5.34/268.41 got him the #8 spot. He improved to 5.29/252.52 in the first round, over Chuck ETchell's quicker 5.26/272. Another holeshot in round two made his 5.18/276.66 a winner over John Force's 5.15/287. Then he really opened some eyes when he reset the NHRA National Record 5.10 at 272.89 in the semifinals to beat A Hofmann's 5.23/273. This put Cruz in the final against veteran, Mineo. A 5.14/284.62 backed up his 5.10 for the record and it was enough to give Pedregon his first NHRA Funny Car Eliminator victory. There was no sneaking up on the field for the NHRA Gatornationals after that, performance. At Gainesville a 5.26/275.98 qualified #4. His 5.20/285.08 beat Paula Martin's 5.37/271 in round one, while a second round 5.21/285.71 beat ETchell's quicker, but later 5.17/281. In the semifinals, crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in a little too much horsepower for Cruz's race against Force. As a result, Pedregon smoked the tires to a 5.31/242.78 loss to Force's 5.20/286. There were no points on the line at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Cruz set a track record 5.26 at 277.26 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, the gremlins persisted and Pedregon broke in the first round. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Cruz qualified #1 with a track record 5.15 at 282.57. It was strange to see his former crew chief, Fedderly helping Force's team for the first time. Pedregon advanced past Freddie Neely in the first round, with a 5.55/239.04 before smoking the tires in round two and losing to Force. He was low man at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.26/272.97. His 5.30/269.38 beat Norm Wilding, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.24/277.69 behind Etchells' 5.23. But in round one, he set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 5.17/288.00 to beat Jim Epler. A 5.21/286.62 beat Tom Hoover in round two while a semifinal 5.29/283.19 took out Del Worsham's close 5.31/275. This set up a final against Hofmann. Cruz fouled against Al in the final and shut off to a 6.57/132.29 while Hofmann got the victory with a 5.31/263.

Notes: Finished number 8 in NHRA championship points in 1976. Photo shows the Jake Johnston driven, Revell sponsored "Pisano & Matsubara" Chevy Monza in the staging lanes at Indianapolis Raceway Park during the 1976 NHRA US Nationals. Jake qualified #5 with a 6.148/228.42 pass and lost in the first round, of eliminations to Gordie Bonin when his 6.552/191.08 was no match for Gordie's 6.347/225.56. - Tom Nagy | Jake debuted the new Monza for Pisano and Matsubara in January at the Sixth annual Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The race was run differently with all 14 cars making three runs and the winner based on the number of wins in competition. Johnston set Low ET in his first-round win with a 6.45 over Roger Garten, who was driving the "Warhorse." In his second race, he got out of shape and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch. The team hurt some parts on that run and was unable to run their third race. He then went to OCIR for the season opener. A 7.03 was all that was needed to advance in the first round, when Don Prudhomme failed to show and a 6.39/203.16 got around McCulloch in the next round. In the final, Jake faced off against John Lombardo, who debuted a new Mustang II here. He wasn't even supposed to be in the show, but when the "Hawaiian" blew during warmups, Lombardo filled in. Jake tried hard in the final, but there was no stopping John this day as he had earlier set Low ET at 6.30 and he almost duplicated it with a 6.31 in the final to take the win. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.228/204.54 qualified #4. A first-round 6.365/202.24 beat a blower-popping Dale Pulde, but in round two, Johnston slowed to an off-pace 6.822/169.81 that lost to Gene Snow's 6.623/212.76. In March, Jake competed at OCIR's Fox Hunt race. There were 27 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and Johnston's 6.62 got the #8 spot. He failed to reach the final, but ran well. He was back at OCIR on May 8 for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #5, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the first round. John smoked the tires while Jake ran 6.37/218 to advance. In the semifinals, he outran Tom McEwen's 6.50/206 with a 6.42/223. He faced the "Blue Max" driven by Raymond Beadle in the final and Beadle took the win with a 6.28/227. The team qualified #9 at Ontario at 6.327/222.22. They lost a first-round decision to Don Prudhomme, 6.211/222.22 to 6.421/225.56. Formerly listed 229.00 best speed. We need confirmation of that.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1988. | Bruce stepped up his act in '88 and it showed when he won his first NHRA National event this year. He made the switch from Chevy bodies cars to Oldsmobile. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 5.54. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. In that race, Ed smoked the tires while Larson motored into the second round where his 5.58 lost to John Force's 5.42. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.69. Unfortunately, he lost to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He did not race in the IHRA events this year so the next big event he attended was the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta where he lasted until the second round where Oswald's 5.55 stopped his 5.62 from advancing. Oswald got him again at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, only this time it was in the first round. Bruce qualified #12 there with a 5.72. Larson got his first NHRA win at the Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He beat Tom Hoover and a fouling Force with a 5.60/254 in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, he beat McCulloch and in the final, it was Kenny Bernstein he beat for his first victory. After that, it wasn't long before he was in another NHRA final; in fact it came at the very next race, the Springnationals at Columbus. Bruce qualified #4 with a 5.51. He took out Chuck Etchells in the first round, and a 5.50/268 beat John Martin in round two. In the semifinals, Mike Dunn smoked the tires against him and Bruce's 5.54/254 run moved him into the final to face Force. It was not much of a race in the final; when Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.69/50.65 while John ran 5.52/262 for the victory. Bruce followed the NHRA tour up north to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.65/263.00 and lasted until the second round when eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.50 beat his 5.59. Then came another final round appearance at the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.55 qualified #5, and he beat Frank Kramberger in the first round. A second round 5.59/260 beat Force's 5.65/251, and in the semifinals, a 5.57/260 beat Bernstein's 5.62/255. In the final, he ran Prudhomme who had been running steady 5.4's. Bruce tried hard, running a 5.63/260, but it finished second best to the "Snake's" 5.41/257. He made a stop at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals where he qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 5.55/254.95. R.C. Sherman fouled against him in the first round, and Bruce advanced with a 5.68/251.29. In the semifinals, he soloed with a 5.76/254.23 when Tim Grose broke and was unable to run. He found himself in another final, and while it wasn't a national event, I'm sure he still felt good. In the final, he faced low qualifier Bernstein. Kenny got the win while Larson got another runner-up finish. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals in Aug, everyone was running 5.3's in qualifying, except, it seemed, Larson. He qualified #8 with a 5.45/267.30. In the first round, he showed he could run with the big dogs by beating Bryan Raines with a 5.35. In the second round, a 5.52 beat a tire smoking Oswald. He was surprised by a quick-leaving Brad Tuttle in the semifinals and his 5.59 couldn't catch Brad's 5.62.

Notes: West started the 1988 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 5.82/247, setting up a first-round race with low qualifier John Force. He lost the race, running a 5.93/243.24 to Force's 5.40/268. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he again lost to Force in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 5.68/254.45. His 5.98/234.37 in the first round lost to Force's 5.49/267. Shortly after that, the team made a stop at Baylands Raceway for a four-car match run at the East/West Meet. West beat Mike Dunn's 5.67/253 in his first race with a 5.64/249.30. He ran another 5.64 at 245.90 in his second race but lost to Force's 5.61/252. The final was another race between him and Force. Once again, John got the win, running a track record 5.51 at 248 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 5.82/221.13. At the NHRA Gatornationals, West did much better in qualifying, turning a 5.45/268.57 (career-best) for the #5 spot. Unfortunately, he still couldn't get out of the first round, as this time, Jim Head's 7.29/138 beat his 9.67/87.83 in a troubled match. He qualified for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta with a 5.87/258.10 before losing in round one. The next stop for the team was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. West ran 5.70/257.36 to qualify #10. He slowed to 5.86/247.72 in the first round and lost to Jim Head's 5.68/253. The month of May ended with the team at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Only 13 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, West ran 5.72/259.74 for the #10 spot. He continued to have problems getting past round one as this time, he fell to Kenny Bernstein. At Columbus, his 5.77/258.59 qualified #15 for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he took a loss in the first round, this time to Ed McCulloch. He finally got around the first round at the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 14 cars showed for the race, and his 5.67/259.74 qualified #9. Typically, he would have run the low qualifier in a sixteen-car field, but because the field was two short, he ran the second qualifier McCulloch in round one and won. He then sent Jerry Caminito home in round two with a 5.70/251. His run ended in the semi-final, where a 5.68 was not enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.55. Johnny ran 5.35/270 at the Englishtown Funny Car Nationals. His best NHRA national event times were 5.427 at Maple Grove and 268.65 at the World Finals at Pomona.

Notes: Ran 5.023 at the Winston Invitational in Rockingham. The best standard National Event time was 5.068 at Englishtown. Hofmann was the second Funny Car driver to exceed 300 mph. He recorded a run of 301.10 mph 2/19/94 in Phoenix to become the 13th member - and only one of two Funny Car drivers - of the Slick 50 300-mph Club. - NHRA | Al started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.12/289.85 and worked his way to the final by beating Gary Clapshaw in round one, with a 5.35/277.17 and a 5.14/288.09 in round two beat Gary Bolger. In the semifinals, he ran 5.11/278.72 over Dean Skuza's 5.25/283. This put him in the final against Cruz Pedregon. The two had a close race as both ran 5.12 (Al at 285.08), but Cruz won. The next race was the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona. Hofmann became the second Funny Car driver to reach 300 mph when he ran 5.09/301.10 to qualify #2. Unfortunately, he slowed to an off-pace 5.59/206.99 in the first round, and lost to Del Worsham's 5.22/289.

Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3. In the first round, he faced Bernstein, and both cars ran 5.84 (5.843/244 to Tim's 5.847/243.63), but Kenny got the win light. His next stop was Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He only qualified #10, but he beat Mark Oswald in the first round and worked his way into the final against Pulde. A good 5.85/233.16 finished runner-up to Dale's 5.78/252. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.669 at 242.06 to qualify #2 behind Bernstein's 5.62. A first-round 5.776/239.10 beat Billy Meyer, and in round two, his 5.825/240.00 took out John Collins. Grose slowed to 5.900/247.38 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." He was up against Bernstein in the final. It was a good, close race, but Kenny's 5.77/249 got the victory over Tim's 5.805/250.13. Tim qualified #10 at Bandimere at 6.056/225.00. In round one, he lost to Bernstein, 5.79/245 to 5.957/237.46. He qualified #13 at Brainerd at 5.927/240.64. In round one, he beat Billy Meyer, 6.008/239.36 to 6.48/239, but lost to John Collins in round two, 5.87/246 to 5.905/246.57. Tim qualified #10 at Indy at 5.754/258.17. Nemesis Bernstein got him in round one, again, 5.70/255 to 5.954/255.24. Tim broke through at Maple Grove, winning the inaugural NHRA Keystones. He qualified #8 at 5.745/234.78. In round one, he beat Bobby Lagana, 5.751/230.71 to 6.71/173. He beat Rick Johson in round two, 5.739/237.46 to 5.91/241. In round three, he beat Dale Pulde, 5.802/244.83, to a 13-second shut-off. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein. Tim finally broke the curse, driving around a Bernstein holeshot to take a 5.821/237.96 to 5.887/234.74 win. Tim qualified #14 at Phoenix at 6.012/227.27. In round one, he lost a close one to Al Segrni, 6.00/244 to 6.036/248.28. At the World Finals, Tim qualified #13 at 5.857/248.34. In round one, he upset Dale Pulde, 5.849/243.11 to 5.88/250. Tim did not show up for his second-round race against Kenny Bernstein. His best times were the 5.669 at Englishtown and 258.17 at Indy.

Notes: Tom had a great season in '86. The season started on a bad note when his 5.93/212.26 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He wasn't at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he made sure he was noticed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.82/253.52. A 5.86/247.93 beat Ray Higley in the first round, and in round two, a 5.86/249.03 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. He faced low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, and McEwen was up to the task. He left on time and beat Bernstein's quicker 5.65/255 with a 5.677/256.11. That put him into the final with Ed McCulloch. Unfortunately, Tom's Corvette broke, and the "Ace" soloed for the victory. He qualified #2 at the IHRA Bayou Nationals but failed to reach the finals. He didn't have a very good outing for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His best of 6.11/238.47 in qualifying put him in the #15 spot, and he lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. McEwen qualified second to Mark Oswald, and in the opening round, his 5.78/255.68 advanced over Scott Kalitta, who crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, his 5.77/257.87 lost to Kenny Bernstein's track record 5.58 at 246. He sure ran well at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, where he found himself in the winner’s circle. It started with a 5.70/257.87 that qualified #3. An easy 5.99/242.06 advanced past the first round when John Martin failed to show. In the second round, his 5.78/249.16 beat Tim Grose's 5.89/239. In the semifinals, a 5.85/236.71 beat Oswald's 5.94/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. That put him into the final against Billy Meyer. Meyer smoked the tires and Tom roared to a 5.78/249.16 for the victory. He continued to run well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where after qualifying #4 with a 5.77/252.17, he made his way to the semifinals before having problems and shutting off to a 6.43/143.28 loss to Bernstein's 5.72/255. The following week (June 22), he was runner-up to Oswald at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 29. McEwen qualified #6 with a 5.85/240.77 and a first-round 5.82/233.28 beat Jim Head, but in the second round, he went up in smoke and lost to Johnny West's 5.79/259 in the "Hawaiian." Milan, Michigan, was his next stop on July 6 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.99/227.27, and once again, he smoked the tires, losing to McCulloch in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.69/254.66. He got payback by beating McCulloch in the first round, but in round two, he had problems and shut off against Oswald. A week later (July 20), he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He ran well, qualifying #2 for the show, but failed to reach the finals. His best NHRA times were the 5.677 from Gainesville and 257.87 at the Cajuns. Lost a close one on a holeshot to John Force in round one, 5.835/253 to 5.813/253.80 (MOV - .015 seconds, about 5.5 feet). Maple Grove - #10 qualifier at 5.781/255.24. Shut off to a 14-second run against Dale Pulde in round one. Seattle - #10 qualifier at 5.924/247.25. Shut off to a 15-second run against Force in round one. Pomona World Finals - #7 qualifier at 5.776/257.87. Put a big holeshot on Al Segrini in round one, but Al came around him for the win, 5.760/248.48 to 5.829/243.50 (MOV .042 - about 16 feet). We need to confirm where 5.67/266 numbers came from. I remember them, but it was not on the 1985 NHRA national event trail. The 266.27 was reported in an Aussie drag mag in December 1985. Probably an IHRA national event.

Notes: The '81 season had an interesting start for the "Blue Max" team. They showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Beadle ran a track record 5.97 at 245.90 (Top Speed) to qualify first. He beat Dennis Geisler with a 6.01/238, and in round two, Mike Dunn with another new track record 5.93 at 245.90. In the semifinals, he again went 5.93 at 245.23 to beat Don Prudhomme. But the win came at a price as the engine blew and tore the roof of the Horizon body. The team didn't have a spare body, so Kenny Bernstein offered his spare. The roof of Bernstein's car was grafted onto the "Max's" topless body for the final. After all that work, he came up to the line in the final to face Billy Meyer, who had been having his own troubles (used up four engines), but the two both had problems, and Meyer's 6.52/205 got the victory over Beadle's 6.66/236.22. The next stop was at Fremont for the East/West meet, and while Beadle didn't win, he did set Low ET at 6.04. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, the team qualified unusually further back in the field with a 6.05/230.76 that was good for the #10 spot in the show. He beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.20/234.37, but an off-pace 6.31/230.76 in round two lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.27/237. The next event they attended was the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington. Raymond made it to the final before losing to Bernstein. Green Valley Raceway was their next stop for the NHRA Western Regional Opener. A 6.45/227.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, and he picked up to 6.32/233.76 in the first round to beat Chris Berg. A 6.25/228.42 beat Bernstein in the semifinals, and he went into the finals to meet with Hoover. Beadle got another runner-up finish as his 6.45/231.36 lost to Hoover's 6.32/231. Atlanta hosted the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 26, featuring eight-car fields in the nitro classes. Raymond qualified #1 with a track record 5.96 at 230.17. Unfortunately, a blown motor slowed him to a 6.23 in the first round, which lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.11. Things went much more their way at Rockingham; the "Max" ran a track record 5.99 at 231.95 in qualifying #1. This was IHRA's first five-second time in the Funny Car division. A 6.00/233.70 beat Shirl Greer in the first round and backed up the 5.99 as a new IHRA record. In round two, Raymond's 6.22 beat Al Segrini, setting up a Meyer vs. Beadle final. The "Max" got the win, running 6.23/229.59 over Billy's troubled 7.46. These two would meet again in the final at the next IHRA race, the Springnationals at Bristol. There Beadle qualified #1 with a track record 5.98 at 240.64. He beat a tire-smoking Bernstein in the first round with a 6.22, while a solo run of 6.18 advanced him into the final when Segrini's car broke on the line. The two reversed their finishes of the last race, with Meyer winning with a 6.21/228 over Raymond's 6.26/236.84. The FCs boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, holding out for more money. May ended with the team running at the IHRA World Nationals, but they failed to reach the finals. In June, the "Blue Max" made it into another final round at the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.05 at 234.37. Bob Pickett got out of shape against him in the first round, and his 6.20/219 advanced. In round two, Beadle went up against Texas neighbor Bernstein. The "Max's" 6.15/235 beat the "Budweiser King's" 6.21/233. Another 6.15/227 in the semifinals took out Hoover's 6.36/202. This put him into the final against 24-year-old Craig Epperly in Don Tait's car. This had the makings of an upset, and it was. Both recorded 6.21 (Beadle at 236.84), but Epperly scored his first NHRA National event victory while Beadle had to settle for runner-up. On July 4, the team was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.23/229.59 behind Bernstein's 6.17. These two worked their way to the final. Beadle survived a close first-round race with Henry Harrison, where his 6.32/230.17 just beat Henry's 6.33/209. In the semifinals, he improved to 6.21/229.59 in stopping Meyer's Citation at 6.49/219. This put the two Texas cars in the final together. But again, the "Blue Max" team had to settle for the runner-up spot as Beadle's 6.32/202.24 lost to Kenny's 6.21/234. The following week (July 12), things went their way as Beadle beat Meyer to win the IHRA Northern Nationals. Then it was off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where both he and Bernstein qualified with 5.86s. Kenny got the pole while Raymond qualified #2, but his speed of 245.23 was tops for the meet. A first-round 6.11/219.51 beat John Collins, but he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Mike Dunn. The team then went to Brainerd for an eight-car show.In the first round, Beadle's 6.46/222.77 beat Carl Swenson's 6.56/221. He then set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.22/226.70 over Dunn's tire-smoker in the "Hawaiian." He faced Tom Hoover in the final; this time, the "Blue Max" went up in tire smoke and lost. | Craig won Indy and had two runner-up finishes to take his second straight championship. Set mph record. The photo from Columbus, where he was runner-up to Craig Epperly.

A first-round 6.03 beat John Martin, but in round two he lost a close won to Al Segrini. His 5.95 lost to Al's 5.94. He lasted until the second round at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as well. There he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he barely made the show, qualifying #16 with a 5.92/249.58. A consistent 5.94/246.17 in the first round, beat Segrini, but once again he lost in round two. This time John Lombardo stopped him in the "Blue Max."

Notes: John started the 1986 season with the Corvette at the NHRA Winternationals but converted to a new Cavalier by the Gatornationals. But he ran his best ET with the Corvette, qualifying #2 at Pomona at 5.643/260.86. He ran 5.704/252.10 in round one, to beat Ray Higley's 6.35/152. He took out Mike Dunn in round two, 5.750/252.10 to 5.90/250. John beat Dale Pulde in the semis, 5.756/255.68 to a 13-second shutoff. Tim Grose continued a 5.60 pace in the final with a 5.69/236.22 win over John's consistent but losing 5.757/254.95. John got the holeshot, but Dale drove around him by .022 seconds - about eight feet.

Notes: Etchells will always be remembered as the first to run a four-second time in an FC. His '96 season was good, as he was always competitive. Chuck qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.46/287.63. He improved to 5.33/252.17 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to John Force's 5.12/296. At Firebird Raceway, for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.05/299.60 qualified second to Force's 5.04/301. A 5.12/295.27 in the first round beat Jim Epler, while he got to run a 5.36/290.69 solo in round two when Chuck Beal failed to show. An off-pace 5.41/289.85 still beat Whit Bazemore in the semi-finals, but fellow finalist force ran 5.14 in his semi-final win. The final saw Chuck slow to a 5.75/186.48 in a runner-up finish to John's 5.19/295. He always seemed to run well at Gainesville, and '96 was no different. A 5.08/306.22 (Top Speed) qualified #3, and he was able to work his way into the final for the second straight race. He started by running a 5.18/294.50 over Gary Densham's 5.21/290. In round two, his 5.15/295.46 stopped Paul Smith's 5.17/285, and in the semi-final, he took out Del Worsham's 5.32/229 with a 5.07/305.18. Once again, the final would come down to Force vs. Etchells, and the results were the same as Force blasted out a track record 4.9301 for the win over Etchells' 5.23/302.01. NHRA's next race was the Supernationals held at Houston at the end of March. Chuck qualified #6 at 5.14/299.70. But he didn't hang around long in eliminations as Mark Oswald's 5.13/287 in round one beat his 5.20/244.96. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field. It's good that no points were awarded at this race as Etchells failed to qualify. He came off the truck and ran 5.37, but it all went downhill as tire shake did him in. His next three passes were 5.62, 9.13, and 7.68. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. Qualified 9th at 5.10/303.23. He defeated Paul Smith in round one with an improved 304.25 before falling to John Force in the quarterfinals. He qualified for Big Bud Shootout but dropped round one to Tony Pedregon.

Notes: The 1969 Chi-Town Hustler Dodge Charger was legendary for its long smoking burnouts and tough performance. The team claimed that the car had a 90 percent win-loss record in 1969. Minick did the driving, Austin Coil tuned the engine, and John Farkonas was the behind-the-scenes engineer. The car was built with an offset roll cage for the driver, one of the last funny cars built in that configuration. The Hustler ran a best of 6.96 in 1970 and ran 206 in 1969. US 30 ad claimed a 6.99/219 in 1970. Previously listed 198.23 in 1970. As tough as the car was in 1969, it became outdated by 1971, and a new car had to be built. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com). | A drag racing magazine dated from '70 (due to magazine lead time) claimed that by early '70, Minick had run a best ET of 7.02. The car used a homemade 120" chassis with a 1,600 hp 426 Hemi. American Racing Engines got the credit for building the motor. It used M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons along with an Engle cam. American Racing did the heads as well as the crankshaft. The transmission was a TorqueFlite, and the rear axle ratio was 3.54. The Charger body came from Fiberglass Ltd. | The "Chi-Town Hustler" team started the '70 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. The race featured six Funny Car's running round-robin style. Pat won all three of his races, first getting around a broken Kip Brundage in the "Parts Mart" Camaro with a 7.48/194.80 and then another 7.48 in a solo after Don Schumacher had blown a rear end in his first race and was unable to repair. In his third and final run, Minick really laid one down, running a 7.26/203.60 over a crossed-up Jim Liberman. Minick failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. But he rebounded nicely on February 14, where he competed at Lions. Thirty cars tried to make the eight-car show. Pat not only made the show, but he also won the race with a final round 7.19/204.54 over Don Prudhomme. Earlier, he had beaten Dick Bourgeois in the first round, with a 7.32/201.79 and a 7.37/200.88 beat Liberman in the semifinals. Minick won the Fremont Northern Nationals the next day (February 15). He ran 7.34/200.88 and 7.41/200.88 in the first two rounds before setting Low ET with a 7.18 in the semifinal over Bourgeois' 7.39. In the final, he defeated Liberman's 7.39/200 with a 7.27/205.46. In April, he met Bobby Rowe in the Super Duster for a best two out of three match race at Miami-Hollywood. He beat Rowe in the first two races with times of 7.42/199.55 and 7.38/199.55, but a broken blower drive in the final race kept him from taking a clean sweep. Another match race was run at Capitol on April 17 against Johnny Wright in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. A track record 7.25/199.54 beat Wright in the first race, who fouled on a 7.66/181 run. Minick reset the track record to a 7.19 in his second race and tied the track speed record of 203.60 held by Tommy Grove as Wright fouled again. Johnny got a 7.85/175 win in the final race when Minick's transmission let go. In May, the team traveled way up North to Keystone Dragways near Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he ran a match race against Liberman. Pat beat Jim three straight, setting both ends of the track records with a 7.45/196.92. Shortly after this, the team stopped at Marion, South Dakota, for a best of three match against Marc Susman. Pat won all three races and ran a best of 7.65/188.66. The ET was a new track record. Minick beat Clare Sanders in the final at the UDRA Springnationals. He also won at Epping on June 30 over a 16-car field. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.39/199.10 before running an 8.48/180 in the final to win when Schumacher lost a trans. Pat competed at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car Invitational on July 11, but he fouled away a 7.25/201.34 in the first round. He then won an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat Sanders in the "Super Camaro" in the first round, with a 7.40/194.80, and another 7.40 at 200.00 beat Randy Walls in the semifinal. He saved his best for last when he ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.32/201.46 blast to beat Bryan Teal in Nelson Carter's Charger. Pat won his first race at the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet by out driving Ron Rivero's quicker 7.48 with a 7.52/198.67, but he fouled out in his next two races. On August 2, Minick faced Leonard Hughes in a best two out of three match race at Atco. Pat won two straight with times of 7.44/195.65 and 7.18/199.11 to wrap up the match. The following weekend he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran the first-round, with the eight lowest ET's advancing to the second round. Pat's 7.16/200.44 was the lowest ET in the first round, and he ran 199.11 in the second round over Teal. In the semifinal, he had some luck on his side when Gene Snow fouled away a Low ET and Top Speed 7.06/210.77. Still, Pat's 7.12/185.95 was strong. Larry Arnold lost fire in the final, and Pat motored to a 7.23/199.11 for the victory. Another victory came on August 30 at the Cordova World Series. Pat tied the track record there with a 7.11 Low ET run over Fred Goeske in the semifinals. The next day (August 31), he was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, where he beat Kenny Safford two straight in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Minick's best was a 7.17/218. On September 1, he won an eight-car show at Saginaw. He ran 7.17/204 over Clare Sanders, who lost fire. A 7.23 in the semifinals beat Terry Hedrick's 7.26 in the "Super Shaker." In the final, a 7.13 (Low ET) at 200 took the victory when Connie Kalitta lost a clutch in his Mustang.

Notes: Photo from the 1992 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. | John started his '92 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.22/283.91. He ran 5.34/273.80 over Tom Hoover in the first round, and a track record 5.18 at 281.25 in round two beat Jerry Caminito. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.28/271.41 when Marc Sievers shut off on the line with no oil pressure. In the final, he faced Jim Epler. Jim had been running steady 5.2's during eliminations and had lane choice going into the final. Epler ran his best ET of eliminations in the final, a 5.26/273, to take the win over Force's 5.32/275.65. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, John set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.24/283.37. In the first round, he beat Ron Sutherland with a 5.33/277.60, but in round two, he fell off to a 5.46/271.98 that lost to eventual winner Hoover's 5.32/259. He qualified #1 again at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals with a 5.18/285.08. An improved 5.15/273.30 in the first round, beat Paula Martin, and he ran another 5.15 at 287.35 (Top Speed) in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat Cruz Pedregon's quick-leaving 5.18/276. John took everything there was to win at the NHRA Gatornationals. He took the pole with a 5.21/284.99. He ran 5.27/285.89, 5.21/287.44, and 5.20/286.16 to beat Gary Densham, Whit Bazemore, and a tire-smoking Cruz Pedregon to face Epler in the final for a rematch of the Winternationals final. This time John got the victory, running Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with a 5.15/289.01, winning over Jim's 5.27/275. NHRA held its Winston Invitational at Rockingham in April, and Force qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.33/280.11 (Top Speed and a new track record). Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and shut off to a 12.92/69.08 that lost to Mark Oswald's 5.32/276. He won the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. There he qualified #8 with a 5.34/271.98. He improved to a 5.19/269.05 in the first round, over Al Hofmann's 5.22/281. Pedregon smoked the tires in the second round, and John moved on with a 5.21/285.35. In the semifinals, his 5.22/265.33 dropped Chuck Etchells' 5.31/251. He went up against Del Worsham in the final, and the two had a close race with John's 5.24/282.04 beating Del's right-there 5.25/277.

Notes: Loehr ran this car, his fourth and last Mustang funny, for a year before selling it to Bob Veselka (Corpus Christi, Tex.). Veselka ran it for a few months in 1970 as the "Going Texas Mustang." Like many funny car pilots, Loehr abandoned floppers and moved to Pro Stocks in 1970. - RT | After running a 392 Hemi-powered Mustang with great success in '68, it was a little surprising that Dick went back to the temperamental SOHC Ford engine for '69. It almost paid off as near the end of the season; he had one of the strongest funny cars in the nation when it was running right. The Chapman-built 125" wheelbase chassis was unusual as it was built so that Dick could relocate the engine forward or backward in the frame. This was done by a hydraulic cylinder. This could be done right from the driver’s seat while staging the car. The idea was to aid in weight transfer depending on traction at the strip at which he was racing. The driveshaft was splined to fit all engine locations. The SOHC engine used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Crew Chief John Skiba ported and polished the steel heads, and a pair of Isky 650 cams were used. Skiba also prepared the blower. A Hilborn injector fed the 68% nitro mix to the engine. Fiberglass Ltd. made the Mustang body, and the whole car weighed 1,800 lbs. | Dick qualified at the March Meet at Bakersfield and beat Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round, with a 7.90/188.67. He broke in the semifinal, however, letting Rich Siroonian single into the final. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the HRM Championships. He also failed to qualify on March 22 for an eight-car show at Lions. In April, Loehr was at Connecticut for a best of three match against Frank Federici in the "Shark" Corvette. The Mustang was having bad handling problems, and he lost two straight. He was still ironing out the bugs to his car when he was paired up against Jim Liberman for a match race at Aquasco on April 20. Liberman beat him two straight for the match race win. He had a rematch against JJ on May 14 at US 131 Martin, Mich. Jim's 7.80/188 won the first race when Dick fouled away a 7.86/189.06. Dick won the next two races to win the match with runs of 7.72/186.72 and 7.77/185.94 over Liberman's 7.95/189 and 7.76/188. He lost in the first round, on May 16 at the UDRA race at Union Grove when Clare Sanders beat him in Liberman's second car. On May 29, back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., for another UDRA race, Loehr got sideways in the first round, and lost to Pat Minick's 7.72/184. At St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 1, they held a four-car race with the winner being decided on who won the most rounds. Dick won his first race with a 7.75/184.80 over Clare Sanders' 7.91/184. He got crossed-up and shut down to an 11.09 to lose to Terry Hedrick's track record 7.56 at 192.70. In his third race, a 7.59/193.54 beat Don Schumacher's out-of-shape run. Hedrick was declared the winner for winning three rounds, while Loehr had won two and was runner-up. He went to Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals and bagged a win, running a first-round 7.61 and a second-round 7.71 over Fritz Callier. In the final, a 7.72 beat Roger Lindamood for the title. A 7.82/196.07 qualified him fifth for the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but Callier's 8.03/172 beat Loehr in the first round. This was followed by another win on July 3 at US 131 at Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race where he set a 7.36 track record and Top Speed of the meet at 202.78. The next day (July 4), he won another UDRA race at Cordova, setting another track record at 7.41. On July 6, a match race was run at Milan against Lindamood. Roger won the first race with a track record 7.41/200.44 over Dick. At the PHR Championships, a 7.67/189.47 beat Hank Clark's Rebel in the first round. In round two, he advanced when Tom McEwen broke. But in the semis, a 7.49/202 by Minick beat Dick's 7.54/191.48. At New York on August 17 for the AHRA Nationals, Dick Harrell ran a 7.48/200 in round two to stop Loehr's 7.68/190. He ran a 7.35/200.44 at the US Nationals to qualify fifth, but he slept on the line in the first round, and lost to Jack Chrisman's 7.66 with a tenth quicker 7.56. An early '70 issue of National Dragster had an article on Loehr which mentioned that he had run a best of 7.20/205 in this car. Best NHRA national event times of 7.354/200.44 at Indy. Notes: Al qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.13/289.20. A first-round 5.25/282.48 beat Richard Hartman while in round two, a 5.16/281.86 beat a tire-smoking Tom Hoover. In the semifinals, his 5.30/283.72 lost to Del Worsham's 5.22/290. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.26/282.48 qualified #7. He beat Chuck Etchells' 5.22/272 in the first round, with a 5.15/287.72. In the second round be beat John Force's 5.22 with a 5.16/276.07. Unfortunately, the run came at a price as the engine blew and the resulting fire destroyed the car. He was unable to run in the semifinals giving his scheduled opponent, Jim Epler a freebie into the final. He recovered nicely at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. There he ran a career-best (to this point) 5.09 at 289.57 to qualify #2. In round one a 5.13/281.86 beat Jack Wyatt. In the second round, his 5.18/285.62 beat Hoover. In the semifinals, he beat Brent Fanning with a 5.18/269.05. This moved him into the final against Force. Al wanted this one badly, maybe too badly, as he fouled and shut down to 10.16/81.16 while John got the victory with a 5.05/289. He picked up a bit more at the NHRA Gatornationals when he set a Gainesville track record in qualifying #1 with a 5.08 at 284.36. Hofmann and Force worker their way to the final for the second NHRA event in a row. Al beat Epler with a 5.40/268.33 in the first round, while a 5.21/283.46 advanced in round two when Chuck Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gary Bolger smoked the tires and Al's 5.17/284.27 moved into the final. Luck was not on Al's side as he when into a wheelstand and shut down to 11.08/74.61 while Force got another one with a 5.21/257. He hit a home run at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. While the event didn't offer points, it was sure a dominating performance. He qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 5.26/278.63. He ran like a bracket racer hitting 5.26/276.83 and 5.26/282.39 to beat Bolger and Cruz Pedregon and advance into the final. In the final, he met Gordie Bonin driving the "Hawaiian." Al got the victory with a Low ET and Top Speed blast of 5.18/288.55.

Notes: Roland got the sponsor, but no money ever changed hands. That is why Roland parked the car after this race. The team switched between two beautiful bodies on this car in '93: a purple one and the aqua, blue one pictured here at Columbus 1993. One half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at Houston Slick 50 Nats with John Force, Gordie 5.131, and Force 5.156. This team made its NHRA debut at the Supernationals. Car owner Roland Leong turned the wrenches over to Leonard Hughes, and he hired "240 MPH" Gordie Bonin to drive. Things started slowly when they failed to qualify at Houston, but things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin qualified #9 with a 5.36/286.35. He improved to 5.28/281.86 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Chuck Etchells' 5.21/274. NHRA's next event was the non-points Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.37/276.32 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.42/268.01 advanced when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gordie had a bit more luck when Wyatt Radke broke against him, and his 5.33/237.34 advanced into the final. There he met Al Hofmann, and this time Bonin had problems and slowed to a 10.14/80.97 while Al got the victory with a 5.18/288. The team really picked up the pace at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Gordie's 5.14/286.53 qualified #3. Unfortunately, the throttle linkage broke in the first round, and his 6.58/134.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/195. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. A 5.30/282.22 qualified #5. Bonin picked up to a 5.23/279.76 in the first round to beat Jim Epler, and in round two, his 5.26/285.89 got around Etchells close 5.27/274. In the semifinals, Bonin slowed to 5.53/242.71, which lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.27/284. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, a great 5.08 at 285.80 qualified #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in round one, with a 5.23/277.60, but in the second round, he lost to Hoover. It had been twelve years since Bonin's last NHRA victory, but at the Springnationals, he got another. In qualifying, a 5.23/289.48 (Top Speed) had placed him #4 on the grid. A first-round 5.27/282.39 took out Gary Densham, while in round two, his 5.24/288.73 beat Hofmann's 5.25/281 in a close one. Bonin had to do a bit of driving in the semifinals as his 5.31/284.90 beat Radke's slightly quicker 5.30/278. He beat Mineo in the final with a 5.60/194.34. He almost made it two in a row when he reached the final at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 5.27/282.75. A first-round 5.40/280.46 beat Densham. He lost a blower belt in round two, and the car slowed to 6.48/144.92, but it was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Hoover who registered a 9.80 in losing. Gordie had a close semifinal race with Cruz Pedregon, where his 5.37/271.98 narrowly beat Pedregon's 5.39/268. This set up a final-round meeting with Force. This was Force's race as he qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed, and in the final, his 5.25/283 got the victory over Bonin's troubled, shut off 9.97/82.16. Another final round appearance came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Hughes tuned the car to a 5.45/259.44 in qualifying #4 in the thin air. Bonin made his way to the finals by stopping Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.52/265.33 and a second-round 5.45/273.55 beat Bruce Nilson. Etchells smoked his tires against him in the semifinals, and Bonin's 5.60/240.96 got him into the final. He faced Pedregon, and Gordie's 5.71/253.23 was no match for Cruz at 5.48/263. After all those good runs, Sonoma was a bit of a disappointment. The team qualified #8 for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.35/281.51, but Hofmann beat them in the first round.

Notes: First 280 mph run in history. Also 5.48 at 273.14 at Ennis All Stars 4/87 (no records set at that event). Set national record at 270.43 at 87 Summernationals. Then at Indy, ran 278.89, but did not back it up. However, did run 274.64, which the 278.89 backed up for the record. Finally, reset national record at 280.72 at Chief Nats. Ran 279.93 at Ennis 10/87 to back up record. Set ET record at 5.443 at Chief Nats (but ran 5.405 in qualifying). Duplicated 280.72 at World Finals (at 5.419). Photo from Indy 1987. | Mike was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #3 with a career best (to this point) 5.56/266.42. In the first round, he broke a blower pulley and slowed to 6.50/143.35 in a loss to Dale Pulde's 5.80/246.

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/253.52. In the first round, his 5.82/240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69/250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well, with a 5.98/233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round, where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67/197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His tire-smoking, off-pace 6.22/234 beat Scott Kalitta in the semifinals, putting him in the final against another long-time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, McEwen broke, and the race never came off, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25/69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain-delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed could not run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals, on April 13. He made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86/256.41. He won, but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round, and in round two, his 6.02/242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12/244 in a tire-smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95/252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final, and Ed got the victory with a 6.00/247.52 over Head's right there 6.00/250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54/168.28. He slowed to a 6.65/162.68 in the first round, which lost to Kalitta's 5.80/252. Crewchief Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00/231.12 qualified #12, but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again, McEwen beat him, but this time it was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals, so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92/249.03. His first-round 5.94/250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78/234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round, when his 6.01/245.90 beat a tire-smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88/244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87/234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time, the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88/249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, with a 5.96/241.93. A 5.86/254 beat West in round two, and his 5.98/252 beat a tire-smoking Oswald in the semifinals. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44/30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81/254. Still, it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop before Indy, which was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight-car show and beat Head in round one, before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88/245.73. In the first round, he survived a tire-smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41/243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34/220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92/226.52, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64/260. The following week (September 7), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #4, but he lost in round one. The team then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Ed's 5.80/251.04 qualified #6. Another 5.80 at 246.30 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.91/235 in the opening round. In round two, eventual winner Oswald ran 5.65/262 to beat McCulloch's 5.85/235.17.

In the second round, he lost to Chuck Etchells. Kenji and Big Jim had a great year. Their best times came at Pomona Winters and the Quality Care Nationals (Phoenix?)

Notes: Don had a terrible start for the '83 season at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. Eight cars competed, all running two rounds, and the two cars with the lowest ET's would meet in the final. In the "Snake's" first race, he blew his engine, and the car caught fire. Still, his 9.12 beat Gary Burgin, who shut down early. The team installed another "bullet" for his second race, and once again, it blew up and caught fire. He still won as opponent Tom McEwen had shut down. Don crossed the stripe at 7.34/125.69. Things went better at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where his 6.80 (Low ET) qualified #1. Traction there was terrible as his 6.80 in qualifying held for Low ET of the meet. He went on to win by beating Tom Hoover in the first round with a 7.32/229 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, he beat Tom McEwen. That put him into the final against Gary Burgin. Gary had problems and shut off while Prudhomme took the win with a 7.00. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.097/227.84. A first-round 6.33/207.37 took out Mike Van Sant in the "Invader" Mustang, but in the second round, the "Snake" had to shut off against Frank Hawley due to severe tire shake. Don qualified #6 with a 5.92/233.16 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but an off-pace 6.19/209.78 lost to Tom Anderson's 6.04/239 in the first round. Early in April, he went back to OCIR for its first 64 car show. Once again, the race featured two rounds and the two Low ET cars meeting for the final. In the first race, his 6.13/222.77 defeated Burgin's 6.35/230. He raced McEwen in his second race, and the "Mongoose" smoked the tires while Prudhomme took the win with a 6.28/207.37. His best time of 6.13 was nowhere close to advancing into the final. The following week (April 9), OCIR did it again. They held another 64 car show run in the same format. It was not a good day for Don as in the first round, his motor-blowing 6.60/183 lost to John Force's 6.20/225. In his next race, the "Snake" shut off against Billy Meyer. He did not go to Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. On May 2, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. A 6.29 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He stayed tough during eliminations, running 6.36/235.60 over John Collins's 6.63/198 and 6.26/236.84 over Jim White's 6.77/225, but McEwen ran better laps of 6.22 and 6.22 to reach the final. In the final, the "Mongoose's" 6.20/238 got the better of the "Snake's" 6.51/194. Near the end of the month, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car show, and his 5.97/243.24 qualified #3. A troubled 6.94/197.36 beat an even more troubled Ken Veney at 7.11/227 in the first round. The car smoked the tires in the semifinals, and Don shut down, losing to Mark Oswald's 6.02/249 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Shortly after that (June 5), he made an appearance at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He "only" qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but once eliminations started, the car came to life. An opening round 5.87/226.69 took out Meyer, and in the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 5.81/246.57 that defeated Dale Pulde's 5.89/247. He faced Oswald in the final, and despite running a better 5.86/245, he lost to Mark's 6.00/236. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max," led qualifying with a 5.88/238, but Prudhomme was right behind in the #2 spot with a 5.94/243.30. Unfortunately, Don lost to Rick Johnson driving the "Custom Body" car in the opening round. He continued to run well at the AHRA events. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, Prudhomme set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.05/244.57. He stayed in the 6.0s by beating Ron Correnti in the opening round with a 6.09/238.10 and Mike Dunn in the semifinal with a 6.08/238.10. Once again, he faced McEwen in the final. This time it was no contest as Don's 6.13/243.91 won easily over McEwen's 6.68/155. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 5.916/252.80 (Low ET and Top Speed) qualified #1. He beat Anderson and Hawley to reach the final against Oswald. Mark was great on the lights, and in the final, it showed as his 6.34/245 nipped Don's 6.31/241.93 for the victory. The "Candies and Hughes" team continued to be a thorn in Prudhomme's side at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Mark's 5.90/251 got the pole with the "Snake's" 5.91/238.72 following. These two looked like they were headed for another final-round showdown. In round one, John Lombardo fell to Prudhomme's 5.96/233.16. The "Blue Max" ruptured an oil pan in the second round, so Don made a solo. The semifinal saw Oswald also make a solo as his competition broke. So, all Don had to do was beat Force. But fate stepped in as the car went into heavy tire shake, and Don shut down while Force legged it to a 6.01/247 for the win. Prudhomme bypassed the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver, choosing to go to Kansas City instead for the AHRA Summernationals. His 6.14/234.37 there qualified second behind Mike Dunn's 6.09/246 in the "Hawaiian." In round one, an easy 6.40/229 beat Johnny West, who lost a blower belt. He really picked it up in the semifinal, where his 6.05/218.97 won over West, who broke on the line. In another classic "Snake vs. Mongoose" final, Don's 6.07/239 got the victory over Tom's close 6.10/222. He always ran well at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships as he seemed to win it every other year. But this year, his 6.07/219.51 only qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field. He got an easy solo in round one when Bob Pickett broke, and in round two, Al Segrini was shut off on the line with an oil leak, so he advanced with a 6.10/233.76 solo. In the semifinal, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires, shutting off to 10.57 in a loss to eventual winner Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," who won with a 6.05/238. Don's best NHRA national event times were the 5.749 from the OCIR Finals and the 252.80 from Sanair. Don sold the car to Dennis Lockaby to Monty Todd. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1983.

Notes: Tripp started the '83 season at Pomona. He qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.206/244.56. It was unlucky because by qualifying in that spot you had to run the #1 qualifier in the first round. Shumake ran low qualifier Tom Anderson, and sure enough, Tom's 5.960/242.58 put the Camaro's 6.158/245.90 on the trailer. Back on the match race trail, the team ran an ungodly 5.749 at the 64 Funny Cars event at Orange County in April. They also competed at the Fuel Wars event in Fremont, but failed to impress with three straight losses due to tire shake and other maladies. The team’s next NHRA event was the Springnationals at Columbus, where Tripp did not qualify at 6.267/222.22. The team also failed to qualify at the US Nationals where their 6.017/243.90 was the fifth alternate. The team recovered at the Golden Gate Nationals, where a stout 5.858/250.00 grabbed the fourth slot in the eight-car field. Tripp defeated Dale Pulde in round one, 5.901/249.30 to 6.038/240.64, but fell to Billy Meyer in round two, 5.843/229.59 to 6.240/208.81. The team finished their NHRA season by qualifying #11 at the World Finals with a 5.932/247.25. Emerging star John Force got them in the first round, however, 5.809/247.25 to 6.174/179.64. Notes: Rear-engined. Maynard broke Don Nicholson's stranglehold on the 1966 season with a two out of three match win at Milan. Rupp made a shakedown pass at Detroit on April 24. He ran 9.56/161.57. On May 1, Maynard faced Ed Schartman in a best two out of three match race at US 131. Rupp beat "Fast Eddie's" SOHC Comet two straight with runs of 9.56/157.50 and 9.49/161.46 to the Comet's 9.90/144 and 10.02/140. Rupp showed up at Milan on May 29 and made three passes. The first was a personal best (to this point) at 9.18/164.64. He backed up that time with a 9.24/160 and a 9.26/162. The Chevelle had problems on June 18 at Detroit for a match race against Bob Harrop. Rupp won the first race with a 9.52/162.74, but he could not make it to the line for the second race due to a broken Heim joint. Harrop soloed to tie the race at one each. Maynard got the car fixed for the third race and then had the transmission let him down. Harrop won the race and the match with a 9.35/147. Another match race loss came at National Trail on August 14, where he lost to Don Nicholson three straight. The car was running strong even in the loss. In the first race, Maynard's 8.83/150.50 lost to "Dyno's" 8.41/168. The second race saw the Chevelle improve to an 8.74/163.93 that lost to Don's 8.47/170, and the third race saw Rupp improve even more to an 8.70/164.73 that still lost to Nicholson's track record 8.29/170. The following week (August 21), he was in Connecticut for a match race against Jack Chrisman. Jack's Comet was not running up to par, and Rupp won all three races. But his times were impressive. In their first race, he drove around the Comet with an 8.69/172.08 (track record). Chrisman shut down early in the second race while Rupp motored to 8.87/169.49 for the win. As the engine in the Comet was done, Rupp made one last solo pass, an 8.67/170.77. Every one of his speeds was above the previous track record. In September, at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, Rupp ran runs of 8.54 and 8.51 in the S/XS class, but he was still dwarfed by the Comets of Nicholson and Schartman, who ran 8.31 and 8.28 in class runoffs. On September 10, he was at Detroit, where he ran 8.45/166.85 to beat Emery Cook, who blew a transmission in Don Garlits' Dart. Hubert Platt then stepped in to cover for the broken Dart with his Mustang. Maynard got out of shape and shut off in the next race while Platt ran 8.59/158 to win. After that, the race was called due to rain. Rupp faced off against Jim Liberman, driving the "Brutus" GTO in a best of three at Lions on October 15. Unfortunately, he lost two straight. He got crossed up in the first race, and his 9.69/169.71 lost to Jim's 8.89/144. In the second race, his 9.19/165.13 lost to an 8.77/162 by the Hemi-powered GTO.

Notes: Photo from Pomona, CA 1979. | Tom had a great year in '79, especially the early part of the season. He started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals over Gary Burgin, and then he went to Pomona for NHRA's Winternationals where he qualified #8 with a 6.26/229. He ran 6.24 and 6.18 in the first two rounds on the way to meeting Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. There he ran another 6.24 to beat Tripp. In the final he met low qualifier, Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked his tires and Hoover ran a consistent 6.29/232.55 for the victory. It was his second career NHRA national event win. The following week (February 11), he was at Fremont for the East-West Meet. Hoover's first-round 6.86/139.10 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.37/208, but in the second round, he reset Fremont's ET record with a 6.06 at 230.76 to beat Ed McCulloch. He also backed it up with a 6.09. It was a strong showing for the "Showtime.” He made the finals at the next NHRA event as well, the Gatornationals in March. Tom qualified #3 with a 6.22. He beat Tom McEwen in round two with a 6.56/230 and a 6.50/226 beat a tire smoking Prudhomme in the semifinals. In the final he ran Gordie Bonin and despite Tom's quicker and faster 6.84/227.27 he lost to Bonin's 6.93/224. Also, in March he was runner-up to McEwen at the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field and Tom ran 6.38/231.36 to qualify sixth. It was a hard show to make as Billy Meyer, Gene Snow, Shumake, and John Collins among others failed to qualify. A first-round 6.44/223.32 lost to Beadle's 6.37/229. Hoover then ran at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals where he qualified #1 with a track record 6.22 at 232.56. He was upset by Billy Graham in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus, but he qualified well, running 6.15/235.60 for the #3 spot in the field. An opening round 6.33/231.95 advanced when Bob Pickett's Starfire broke, but in round two his 6.40/237.16 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.35/235. Tom was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals later in June. The Corvette was running strong going 6.19/242.60 (Top Speed) in his first-round win and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.21. In the final, he ran McEwen, but Hoover had problems and shut off. Hoover's 242.60 was a new AHRA speed record. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Early in July, he was at Houston for a best of three match race against McEwen. It wasn't Hoover day as he lost two straight running a best of 6.49. He was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Tom qualified #7 with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.23 beat Al Hanna, but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to John Force. Also, in July he finished runner-up to Pete Williams in the "Chi Town Hustler" at the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove. At the US 131 Funny Car Nationals Tom lost in the first round, to Frank Oglesby. At the PHR Championships at US 131 he failed to qualify. He skipped over the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada choosing to race at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City instead. Tom qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and lasted until the semifinals where he got crossed up and lost to Tom Hovland. He was upset in the first round, by Doc Halladay at the fourth NHRA Division 5 race at Brainerd. At the AHRA World Finals, he again qualified #1, this time with a 6.30/225. He beat Bill Spevacek in round one, before losing to Bonin in the semifinals. Indy was the next stop for the NHRA |US Nationals. Hoover qualified with a 6.07 and in the first round, his 6.12/241.93 beat Meyer's 6.32. A second round 6.24/234.37 lost to eventual winner Bonin's 6.04/244. Hoover's next stop was Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.17/240.65. A consistent 6.18/240.00 beat Jim Moore in the first round, but his 6.26/239.36 in round two was no match for Beadle's 6.08/234.

Notes: In 73, Foster was still the driver. Burned the car at Martin in August. I think one of these cars went to Chuck Tanko. - Dennis Doubleday | Ran 6.360 (National Record) and 233.76 in winning Gainesville. Reported to have a 520 inch Pink Elephant. Also ran 231.36 at AHRA Beeline. - Danny White | Pat started the year off by winning the second OCIR all-pro race at OCIR, beating Sush Matsubara in the final. He also set Top Speed at 223.32. He followed that up by taking Top Speed honors again at the AHRA Winternationals with a 231.36 run. He failed to make the finals there, however. He qualified #3 with a 6.94 at the IHRA Winternationals at Lakeland and then set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.63/214.79, taking the win over Ron O'Donnell. He won again on March 18 at the NHRA Gatornationals after qualifying #4 with a 6.489/216.34. Pat ran a 6.472/227.27 in the first round, over Charlie Therwhanger and improved to a 6.360/233.76 in the second round over Dave Condit. A semifinal 6.416/206.42 beat Al Bergler, and a final round 6.371/221.13 beat Don Schumacher's 6.416/233.16. Pat qualified #1 at the IHRA Pro-Am at Rockingham in May with a 6.49/223.88. He singled with a 6.53/196.07 in the first round, when Preston Davis failed to show. A 6.34/227.27 beat Jim Paoli's 6.55/214 in the second round and in the semifinals, a 6.44/225.56 beat Richard Tharp's wheelstanding "Blue Max." In the final, he slowed to a 7.02/194 for runner-up spot to Mike Snively's 6.53/227 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. Pat was runner-up again at the NHRA Springnationals on June 10. He qualified #3 with a 6.66 and improved to a 6.61/226.13 while beating Tom McEwen in the first round. Another 6.61 at 217.91 in round two beat Larry Arnold and a 6.74/220.58 in the semifinal beat Don Prudhomme's off pace 7.34/144. Foster slowed to a 7.01/216.86 that was second best in the final to Dave Beebe's 6.71/221. Pat set Low ET at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals while qualifying #1 with a 6.54, but he lost early there. On July 4, Englishtown held an eight-car show. Pat set Low ET with a 6.36/209.79, beating Jimmy King in the first round. A semifinal 6.67/223.88 set Top Speed as well, but he lost to Lew Arrington's 6.68/218. At the NHRA Summernationals, a 6.47/227 qualified #3. He ran well, getting into the final by beating Paoli in the semis with a 6.74/224.43. In the final, he lost a close race with his 6.78/223.32 falling to Leroy Goldstein's 6.74/214 in the Candies and Hughes car. He ran at Maple Grove on July 25 for their All-American Funny Car race. Unfortunately, he lost oil pressure in the first round, giving Harlan Thompson a single into the second round. More bad luck hit when he raced at the fifth annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. He beat Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round, but blew a motor doing it and was done for the day. Things started going better at the IHRA Northern Nationals. Pat qualified #3 with a 6.98. He set Top Speed at 220.58 and made his way into the finals by running a 6.87/219.51 single in the semifinals when Tharp's parachute fell off on the line. In the final, he once again grabbed a runner-up spot when his 6.66 narrowly lost to Paoli's 6.65. In August, AHRA held its National Challenge race and a 6.53/212.76 qualified Pat #2. He made it into round three of the 32 car field before running a 7.36/154 that lost to Dale Pulde's 6.63/200 in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. The following week it was off to Indy for the NHRA Nationals where a 6.39/226.70 qualified #5. Going up against Tharp in the first round, he fouled. This high dollar car was running well, but it seemed like every time the money was on the line some bad luck would step in. In September, Foster did get a win at the NHRA WCS Points Race at Englishtown. His Low ET 6.28 was good for a new track record and he set Top Speed at 231. A final 6.37/229.59 beat Jim Liberman's 6.59 for the title. Another win followed at the IHRA US Open. There, he beat Larry Fullerton, Shirl Greer, and Billy Meyer before stopping Dale Emery for the money. At the IHRA Nationals at Lakeland on October 14, a 6.69 qualified #1, but a first-round 6.94/174 lost to Colson's 6.86/209. | Beat Jungle Jim at an August match race at Englishtown. Ran bests of 6.27/227.
