Notes: The "Kamikaze" Monza was finished in time for Bakersfield March Meet. Unfortunately, Uyehara failed to qualify for the show. At the opening NHRA Division Seven race at Fremont. It was only the team's third outing, but Dave herded the car to a 6.15/229.00 to qualify low for the field. Don Prudhomme was second at almost a tenth back with a 6.24. But in the first round, Dave's 6.44/223.32 lost to John Lombardo's 6.41/214. At the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race, a 6.47 qualified #4. But the car had issues and was unable to run in eliminations.

Notes: In January '80, ND reported that at the Fremont Opener, Raymond Beadle ran 5.92/244. Beadle ran at OCIR for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. The car turned out to be a handful there as he lost to John Force in the opening round, where the car went into a wheelstand, and he had to shut down. He again was forced to shut down in his second race when he got out of shape against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." At Pomona, the team waived its points for the NHRA Winternationals. Beadle qualified #3 with a 6.06/243.90. He went into a wheelstand in the first round and shut off, giving Colson the win. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Division 4 Opener on March 9, and the "Blue Max" ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.24/233.76 to win over Billy Meyer's close 6.27/230. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.13 and, in the first round, beat Tom McEwen with a 5.99/238.09. In the second round, a 6.06/227.27 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/233. A piston-burning 6.11/207.85 beat Tom Ridings' 6.46/180 in Joe Pisano's car in the semifinals. This put him into the final against Don Prudhomme, who had just run 5.93 in the other semifinal race. Beadle tried hard in the final, but his 6.17/231.95 was good for the runner-up spot to the "Snake's" 5.98/238. He went to Darlington the following week (March 23) and cleaned up. The only thing he didn't get was the pole. He qualified #2 with a 6.42 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28 beat a tire-smoking Burgin, and a 6.29 beat John Force in the semifinals. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. Raymond capped off the weekend by running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.06/237.46 to win the event. He then set Low ET and Top Speed while winning the second NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley on March 30. The win put the "Blue Max" into the lead in NHRA points. Things did not go well at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where the team failed to qualify. A best of 6.23/238.09 failed to better the 6.18 "bump." Raymond toured England this year, too. He came out with a new Omni to run the second half of the season.

Notes: Prudhomme started the year with his venerable Arrow but debuted this Plymouth Horizon in April at OCIR for the 64 car show. In the opening round, Don ran a track record 5.96 at 238 to beat John Force. He made it into the final against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." The "Snake" got crossed up and shut off while Colson ran 6.48 for the win. On April 20, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.94/238.72, but rain interrupted the race, and Don could not run on the rain date since he chose to go to Baton Rouge instead for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He would've been better off at Fremont since his best of 6.21/235.60 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge. On May 17, he was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.03/238.09. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.18. He then went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. Prudhomme ran well, hitting a 6.04 in the semifinals over Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the final, he set Low ET with a 5.97 at 235.60 over Colson's 6.70/229. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.21/231.95 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Colson. Don improved to 6.08/222.77 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round two, advancing Billy Meyer into the semifinals. He did not compete at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, choosing to run the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas instead. Don qualified #1 with a questionable 5.92. He then ran 6.19 and 6.28 over Kenny Bernstein and Tom McEwen to reach the final, where he faced John Collins. A final 6.18/229 gave him the victory over an up-in-smoke Collins at 7.24. He was back on the NHRA tour for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown in July. Don qualified #3 with a 6.02/237.46. An opening round 5.99/240.64 beat Bernstein, and he made an easy single in the second round when Dale Pulde was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Prudhomme faced Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max" in the semifinals, and Don's 6.05 beat the "Max's" ailing 6.85. Once again, he found himself in the final. There he faced and beat Meyer's 6.58/192 with a 6.10/238.05. Prudhomme was back at Union Grove in July for the NHRA Division 3 race. While he didn't reach the final, he did set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.15. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42. This time, the "Snake" really had to work for it. He qualified #2 with a 6.20 behind Pulde's 6.12 in the "War Eagle." A first-round 6.23 beat Gary Burgin's 6.44, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Len Imbrogno could not show. The final came down to Pulde and Prudhomme. Don got the win with a 6.26, stopping Pulde's out-of-shape run. August started with Prudhomme winning the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. The "Snake" did not have the quickest car (Tom Hoover did at 6.05), but he was the most consistent, running 6.15 and 6.14 (at 232.55) to reach the final. There, he faced Billy Graham, and a 6.13/231.93 gave him yet another win over Graham's 6.25/219. He did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was runner-up to McEwen at the Funny Car Nationals at US 131. There, his final round, 6.31/206.89 lost to the "Mongoose's" 6.17/233. On August 18, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Don was the only 5-second qualifier with a 5.95 (Low ET). In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover's 6.52 in the "Pacemaker" Firebird. Don was reinstated when officials found out that Hoover was driving two cars. It didn't do Prudhomme much good as he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bill Spevacek. He had problems with his race car transporter on the way to Indianapolis and had to be towed in. He was still able to run a 6.07/234.37 to qualify #10. In round one, he beat Colson with a 6.12/234.98, but a second-round 6.27/226.75 lost to Meyer's 6.18/234. Ran 6.07/236.22 NHRA Indianapolis 9/80.

Notes: Tom McEwen had a very successful season in '72. It started at Fremont's New Year's race. There, he qualified #7 for the eight-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.87 lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.85. He then went to Lions for the Grand Premiere race. Once again, he lost in the opening round; this time, his sleepy 6.85/217.39 lost to Stan Shiroma's 6.94/190. Beeline Dragway was his next stop for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car show, and he lasted until round two, where his 6.85 lost to his "Hot Wheels" teammate, Don Prudhomme's 6.75. Tom qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.91. He beat Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian" in round one, but he lost to low qualifier Pat Foster in round two. He chose not to run his Funny Car at the Bakersfield March Meet. Instead, he devoted his time to the Top Fuel car there. It proved to be a wise choice. He was back at Fremont on March 12 for the AHRA Northern Nationals. His 6.70 qualified #1. The sixteen-car field was short, so he got to take the "odd-lot" solo in round one. In round two, he ran 6.69/184.04 to beat Tom Hoover, but in the semifinal, his 6.71/204.54 lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 6.55/216 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He raced his Top Fuel race at the NHRA Gatornationals. Late in April, he faced Clare Sanders, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for a best-of-three match at Epping. McEwen won the match two straight with times of 6.79/201 and 6.61/200. The 6.61 was a new track record. Shortly after that, he was at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. An opening round 6.93 beat Cogo Eads, but a 6.91 in round two lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.77. He was the #2 qualifier at Tulsa PRA at 6.581/220.04. Tom also won the AHRA Spring Nationals in Denver with a 6.81/205.90. Tom was also on the losing end of the quickest and fastest pass in funny car history when he lost to Pat Foster's 6.29/234.98 blast in the first round of the NHRA Supernationals. Tom qualified fourth at OMS with a 6.43/225.56 and was a slight favorite when meeting the Barry Setzer Vega. While Foster reset the record book, Tom blew an engine, had a big fire, and stopped in the middle of the track, an inauspicious end to a highly anticipated race. Tom won the final event of 1972 at the OCIR All-Pro event on 12/31/72 with a 6.70/221.13 win over Bob Pickett at 7.04/209.79. It was Tom's first funny car win at OCIR. Tom was the fifth qualifier at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 at 6.58. He ran 6.92 to win round one when Mert Littlefield shut off. He won a close one in round two over Omer Carruthers, 6.60 to 6.62. Round three saw him step up to 6.40 to beat Jim Dunn's 6.64. In the final, he took out nemesis Don Prudhomme with an excellent 6.39 to 6.97 drubbing. Although Ed McCulloch seemingly had a more successful year, Tom McEwen was named the 1972 Drag News "Funny Car Driver of the Year." Several late-season successes, notably his victories at the inaugural PRA "National Challenge 72'" and "The Last Drag Race" at Lions Drag Strip, helped convince Drag News to give Tom the year-end award. He ran strong all year after changing from a Ramchargers to an Ed Pink combination.

Notes: Debuted the 1969 blown Logghe Nova at Detroit Dragway and set the track MPH record at 197 (with a 427 Chevy motor). Two weeks later the car went end over end at Englishtown and the Army decided I should crew chief a M1A1 tank instead of race cars. End of story. - Dick Abbott

Notes: 1971 Woody car replaced the heavy '70 Cuda. Qualified second at Indy 9/71 with a 6.59 and won the race, defeating Dale Pulde with an ET of 6.64 at 223.32 mph. The win at the 1971 NHRA Nationals was the first for Ed McCulloch and was a springboard for his dominating 1972 season. The photo was taken late in 1971 at Ontario during the NHRA Supernationals and shows the car shortly after signing Revell as a sponsor.

Notes: Crowerglide. In 1971, Snow fielded one of the first multicar teams in the sport, running a pair of mini-Chargers with longtime crew chief Jake Johnston as the other driver. Highlights of the season included the Super Stock Magazine Championships in York, Pa., a runner-up finish at the Summernationals, a win at the OCIR All Pro Series, and a Drag News Driver of the Year award. Ran 6.71 at Lions Drag Strip 10/71. Ran 6.71 Low ET at AHRA St. Louis. | Snow debuted his new Charger at a four-car race at Southland in March. The car was still in primer, and on Gene's first-ever pass in the car, his 8.19/128.20 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.35/187. In the second round, he singled, running a track record 7.03 at 194.38. A follow-up run of 6.94 showed that the new car was tough. The car's national event debut came at the NHRA Gatornationals, where Snow qualified #3 with a 6.85/204. He beat Tom Prock's 7.02 in the opening round with a 6.89, but in round two, he smoked the tires to an 8.13 loss to Phil Castronovo's 6.93. He dominated the final OCIR All-Pro race run the following week (March 27). There he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.82/217.39. He then went on to win by running 7.02/201.79 over Dean LaPole, and an easy 6.9/210 advanced in round two when Dave Condit lost fire in the "L. A. Hooker." He eased past the semifinals to meet with Jim Dunn in the final. Dunn broke, and Snow ran 7.89/120.34 for the victory. The next day he jumped on a plane and went to Amarillo to drive his old Challenger, and he won there too. In April, he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final against Mart Higginbotham only to have his Charger break. He then won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas. A final round 7.36 stopped Charlie Smith. Then came his big win at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30. Gene qualified #1 with a 6.93 but ran nothing but 6.8's in eliminations. He started with a 6.88/199.11 over Lew Arrington. Low ET came in round two, where his 6.85/209.79 stopped McCulloch's 6.97/214. Another 6.85 at 214.79 in the semifinals beat Leonard Hughes' 6.97/201. In the final, he faced newcomer Tim Kushi, and Snow stormed (pun intended) to a 6.88/219.51 (Top Speed) to beat Tim's 7.37/199. After that, he won an eight-car show at Epping, stopping Terry Hedrick in the final. He also won the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway on May 23. He ran times of 6.93 (Low ET) at 201.34, 6.97/192.70 over Dick Harrell, and 6.98/203.60 over Higginbotham to reach the final. For the money, he raced Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. Snow's 6.99/169.81 got him the victory. June started with Snow bagging another win, this time at the Baton Rouge AHRA Grand American race. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.79 over a fouling Hughes. The next week (June 13), he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.89/215.31 qualified #3, and he beat Dunn in the first round, but he fouled against Sush Matsubara in round two. His next win came at the AHRA Springnationals held at Denver on June 27. There he beat John Dekker in the final. Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.92. A first-round 7.05/196 beat Kelly Brown who lost an engine in Barry Setzer's Vega. He got to solo in the next two rounds when Casey Powell was unable to run, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals faced Hughes in the final, and Snow was just a bit late off the line, and his 6.95/207.37 lost to Hughes' 6.96/211. He won over an eight-car field at Union Grove two days later, setting Low ET at 6.71. Another runner-up finish came at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where despite setting track records of 6.73/220.58 in the final, he lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.77/217. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinals at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.

Notes: This was Bonin's best season since he started driving Funny Cars. It started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he debuted his new Firebird. He qualified #12 with a 6.37, and in the first round, picked up to 6.18/239.36 to beat Dale Emery's close 6.19/229. He then beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" before losing to Raymond Beadle's 6.41 in the "Blue Max" with a quicker, but later 6.40 in the semifinals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with a 6.35. Bonin ran a best of 6.10 before losing to eventual winner Eddie Pauling's 6.03 in the semifinals. He dominated the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with a 6.26/238.72 (Top Speed). He beat Dodger Glenn in the first round, and then set Low ET in round two with a 6.19/236 over Gary Burgin. In the semifinals, he dispatched Beadle with a 6.64/236. In the final, he raced veteran Roger Lindamood. Bonin took his first NHRA national event victory. Gordie then stopped off at OCIR for an eight-car show where he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.13/240.00 before beating Dale Pulde in the final with a 6.26/236.84. He then won the Portland Funny Car Opener. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a track record 232.95. The next day he went to Seattle and won its Funny Car Opener. Once again, he had the top times at 6.37/230.00. Bonin beat Terry Capp in the final. On April 9, he was at Irwindale's 64 car race. While he failed to reach the finals, he did run a best of 6.34/235.60. He did reach the final at the NHRA Division Six race at Firebird Raceway. There, his 6.58/227.76 times were good for both Low ET and Top Speed, but in the final, he fouled against Rob Bruins, who was driving the "Green Elephant." Gordie won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. He was runner-up at the third Division 6 race in Seattle. He set Low ET at 6.22 before running 6.57/219.51 in the final only to lose to Mike Miller's 6.37/231. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Bonin qualified #9 at 6.25/233.76, and in the first round, low qualifier, Burgin, fouled away a 6.15/234 while Bonin advanced with a 6.27/226.70. A second-round 6.29/230.76 advanced over Tom McEwen's troubled 10.12. In the semifinals, he smoked the tire to a 7.09/133.18 in a losing effort to Don Prudhomme, who was long gone with a 6.17/235. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships before winning Woodburn's fourth NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/229.59 while beating Mike Miller in the final. He did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. On July 31, he was at Portland for a 32 car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he set Top Speed at 224.43. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7, Gordie qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.36/229.59. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Don ran 6.21/234 to beat Bonin's 6.29/227. A week later (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. All ten cars there made two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gordie didn't make the final, but he did win his two races. A 7.21/215.74 beat Beadle in his first race, while he shut off when Twig Zeigler fouled against him in his second race. The NHRA Division 6 final was held at Portland International on August 19, and Gordie set Low ET and Top Speed on a first-round single with a 6.20/236.22. He then beat Miller to reach the final only to have Beadle gate him off the line, and his 6.33/225.56 lost to Raymond's 6.34/227. Bonin was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #1 with a 6.34/230.17, and in round one, his 6.30/230.76 solo advanced when Jim Liberman lost fire. Gordie had another solo in round two when Capp shut off, and Bonin advanced with a 6.38/219.50. He looked like he was on his way to another win as his times were the best in each of the first two rounds, but he failed to hear the call for his semifinal race against Beadle, and the "Blue Max" was able to make a solo run into the final. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.106/240. An off-pace 6.62/224.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.36/216 in the first round. Only fifteen cars showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, so qualifying wasn't a problem. Still, Bonin ran 6.28/234.98 (Top Speed) to qualify #5 for the show. A 6.42/222.77 advanced over Bob Papirnick in the first round, but in round two, his 6.40/230.76 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.28/223. Irwindale held its last race ever on October 1, and Gordie was there. It was a sixteen-car field, and Bonin ran 6.69/223 in the first round, over Tom McEwen, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on the line, and Gordie advanced with an easy run. In the semifinals, he faced Lombardo and Bonin ended up having traction problems and shutting off while John ran 6.28/193 to advance. At Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, Gordie ran 6.19/239.36 to qualify #5. Bob Pickett broke against him in the opening round of eliminations, and his 6.19/232 advanced. A strong 6.16/239 beat low qualifier Burgin's 6.25 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.22/232 beat Tommy Ivo's troubled 11.68. The final came down to Bonin vs. The "Snake." Prudhomme had run been running like a bracket racer, hitting 6.06 on all three runs in eliminations, not to mention his 6.05 in qualifying. So it looked like Bonin was done. But, both slowed to 6.3's in the final, and Bonin's 6.31/228.42 triggered the win light ahead of Don's 6.36/238. | Runner-up to Mike Miller at Seattle PDA. - Joe Moore

Notes: Anderson qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.26/260.11. He had problems in the first round against Chuck Etchells and shut off. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.36/294.21 qualified #11. He pulled off a big upset in the first round when both he and John Force smoked their tires. Randy recovered first, and his 5.96/190.83 beat Force's 6.23/222. In round two, he pulled off another upset where his 5.04/308.11 defeated Cruz Pedregon's 5.23/285. I'm sure that put a smile back on Force's face!. In the semi-final, Anderson lost to eventual winner Etchells. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. Randy qualified #5 at 4.96/272.64. Jim Dunn replaced Larry Frazier as tuner.

He smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 11.52 that lost to Gary Burgin's 5.94. A week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. The traction was horrible, and it only took a 7.48 to qualify. Still, guys like Raymond Beadle and Kenny Bernstein failed to better that mark and qualify! Meyer's 6.42 got him the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he fouled against Rick Johnson in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.05/225.00, but once again, he went out early. In the first round, his 6.22/184.04 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.87/247 in the "Hawaiian." Meyer qualified on the "bump spot" for the eight-car show at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.56/220 just made the field, but he lost to Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round. Early in April, OCIR held its first of two 64-car shows. All 22 Fuel FCs were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Meyer made the final by making runs of 5.97/218.44 over Dale Pulde and 5.86/228.42 over John Force. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, who had reached the final with 5.93 and 5.74 runs, so he had his work cut out. Billy overpowered the track in the final and went up in smoke. He shut off to 11.52 while Shumake ran 6.37 for the win. The following week (April 9), OCIR held another 64-car show run in the same format. Once again, Meyer reached the final, but things didn't look too promising in the first round, where his 6.19/222.77 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.17/240. He stepped up to 5.98/230.76 in his second race over Prudhomme, who had shut off on the line. This time, he would face Force in the final, who had gotten there with a 5.91. Billy ran 6.06/233.16 to get the victory over Force. He was back in Atlanta on April 17 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he failed to qualify for the eight-car field with a 6.03/240.64 (first alternate) best. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Rain postponed the race until May 1. He qualified #6 (another eight-car show) with a 6.11 but failed to make the finals. Meyer must have been wondering what was going on by this time, as he had run so well in '82. But NHRA had made a rule change for '83, outlawing the use of Nitrous Oxide. Billy had been using it in '82. The NHRA Cajun National was run at Baton Rouge near the end of May, and Billy's 6.04/228.42 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald, who was driving for "Candies and Hughes." Meyer smoked the tires and shut down to 10.08/77.38 while Oswald advanced at 6.21/229. Shortly after that (June 5), he was in Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Only Oswald had outdone him in qualifying, but Meyer lost to Prudhomme in the first round. The following week, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he ran 6.00/230.17 to qualify #7. But as was the case for most of the year, he had problems in the first round and slowed to 9.12/83.79 and lost to Burgin's 6.27/235. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.16 best failed to qualify for the tough eight-car show. Billy's best times came at the World Finals at OCIR, where he qualified #2 at 5.752/246.57. | Billy Meyer downed Raymond Beadle in the final at the Golden Gate Nationals, 5.75 to 5.78, in what was then the quickest side-by-side Funny Car race of all time. Meyer finished second to Frank Hawley in the 1982 points battle but had slumped badly in 1983, winning just one round of competition heading into the Baylands event. Meyer was not even ranked in the top 10, but after qualifying sixth with a 5.90, his Chief Auto Parts, 7-Eleven Pontiac came to life with a 5.84 in the semis and a 5.75 in the final against low qualifier Beadle. - NHRA | At the '83 Finals, monster-sounding, wheel-lifting, dry hops off the starting line (r/h lane)in round 1. OCIR was one of the tracks where both fences were equidistant to the track, the spectator side just as close a view as the tower side. Tower side was a SIR habit I brought. - Joe Moore

Notes: Alley literally tore the roof off his three-week-old Charger at Irwindale on August 25. According to the 9/01/67 National Dragster, this occurred when his throttle stuck during a qualifying pass, resulting in a wide-open run that ended a full 1/8th mile past the finish line. He turned Low ET of 8.19 of the event in the process and returned to participate in eliminations, topless. - RT | Ran 8.62 and 8.77 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Ran 8.19 at Irwindale. - DC | This car took a long time to build. Alley had wanted to have the first Charger Funny Car, but problems held the car back and it actually took 18 months to get finished. The frame was designed by Ray and Bob Brown, but the final welding was done by Don Long. The wheelbase was 118" and it used an Olds rear axle with 3.90 gears. Of course, Alley’s company, Engine Masters, built the TorqueFlite transmission. The engine was an early 354 Hemi built by Dave Cole. Ed Pink line-bored the block. The crank was a standard Chrysler unit. M/T rods and Venolia 7:1 pistons were used. Chet Herbert supplied the cam. The heads were ported and polished by Lockerman with stock 2" Chrysler intake valves. The exhausts were 2 1/8" Donovans. Tom Jobe of the Surfers built the blower running at 28% overdrive. Hilborn injection sat up top. The car was run on 70% nitro and Ray was willing to tip the can if needed. The car weighed 2,200 lbs. and within weeks of being done he ran early times of 8.46/179.98. Ray was at Fontana on Jan 7 for an eight-car show. It was a hard show to get into as 42 cars attempted to qualify for the eight positions. Ray beat the "Whinemaker" in the first round, with an 8.11/180.72. In the semifinal, he ran an easy 9.08/146.57 when Marv Eldridge fouled. In the final, he was up against "Dyno" Don Nicholson. Ray ran an 8.52/178.21 for the runner-up money as Don's 8.08/172 took the win.

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Hoover entered the '89 season with a new carbon fiber body on his McKinney chassis. He continued to run the AFT clutch that had served him so well in late '88. His 82 year old father, George, continued to serve as crew chief. Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42/268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round, and beat him with a 5.39/260.11 to Force's 5.46/275. In the second round, be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43/264.23 and once again, met Force in the first round. Again, Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round, for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time, he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60/150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45/264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49/244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where a 5.36/264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round, but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round, after qualifying #11 with a 5.57/263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44/252.66, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67/183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55/242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42/275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79/135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54/256.77 qualified #5, and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.57/251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47/270 beat Tom's 5.68/211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5, and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76/248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round, be beat Gary Ritter, but in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47/256.70. But once again, McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66/261.55 and in the first round, he improved to a 5.54/265.48, but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49/261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55/259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In all, he made four qualifying runs; the times were 5.72, 5.69, 5.55, and 5.58. In the first round, he improved to a 5.42/238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80/111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (September 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 5.54/265.01, but in the first round, he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41/253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round.

Notes: Waterman built Hemi. Billy ran 6.197 for Low ET and a National Record at Indy in '74 but ended up smoking the tires in a rain-delayed final and lost to the Snake in the ARMY 'Cuda. Ran 6.34 at Bristol, 6.44 at Englishtown, 6.44 at Ontario. | Billy Meyer was 19 in '74, and he had already been behind the wheel of a funny car for a few years. He had won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet at only 17 years of age! Before this new Mustang II was built, he had already been involved with four other Funny Car's. His new car was built by S&R and used a 118" chassis. The fiberglass Mustang II body came from J&E. Sid Waterman built the Hemi, which used a Moldex 1/2 stroker crank for a displacement of 484. M/T pistons held Venolia pistons. Crower was the choice for the camshaft. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and on top of the GMC 6/71 sat an Enderle fuel injection unit fed by a Hilborn pump. A Lenco transmission transferred the power back to a Ford rear with 3.90 gears. The car wasn't cheap to build as it cost Meyer $25,000. The August '74 issue of Drag Racing USA claimed that the car's best (at the time) was 6.35/231. Billy started the '74 season by qualifying #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.41. A first-round 6.48/211.26 advanced when Russell Long shut off early. In the second round, a 6.72/195.22 beat Gordon Mineo's 6.83/188. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line in the semifinals with an oil leak. Billy was at Englishtown in June for a best of three match race against Russell Long, who was driving one of "Jungle Jim" Liberman's Vegas. The two had a really close first race that saw Meyer's 6.86/195.65 beat Long's 6.87/174. Both lost traction in the second race, but Billy's 8.13/119.65 still came out on top over Russell's 8.36/181. Meyer had already won the match, but the two came out for a third run. The Mustang II ended up exploding a blower and slowing to 7.41/146.81 that lost to Long's 7.05/152. Shortly after that (June 16), he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.49 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, his 6.55/200.89 beat Bob Lagana's 6.90/191. He really picked it up in round two, where his 6.37/218.97 defeated Ron Colson's 6.53/218 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Shirl Greer blew his engine and caught fire in the semifinal, so Billy's 6.56/213.27 advanced easily. He went up against the "Black Magic" Vega of Al Segrini in the final. Their best times in eliminations were so close as Al had run a 6.38 best compared to Meyer's 6.37. It was going to be anyone's race. Meyer rose to the occasion, running Low ET at 6.34/223.88 to win over Segrini's 6.43/228. Another match race was run at West Salem, where he lost the match to Denny Savage driving the "Hawaiian." He also reached the final of IHRA's next national event, the Northern Nationals held at Mid America Dragway at the end of June. The final was kind of embarrassing for Meyer as he had to shut off on the line due to one of his headers falling off. Colson soloed for the victory. During the month, he had also driven the "Keeling and Clayton" car at several events. On July 3, he competed at the Funny Car Spectacular at Englishtown. He set Low ET in his first-round race, where he ran 6.50/202.70 to beat Roy Harris' 6.93/210 in "Jungle Jim" Liberman's second car. Unfortunately, the car broke on the burnout in the semifinal against eventual winner Raymond Beadle. He suffered three straight losses to Colson at Bluegrass Dragway. His best time for their match was only 7.12, while the "Chi-Town" car ran in the 6.7's and set track records. Many people had Meyer on their radar for the NHRA Summernationals, as when his car was right, he was tough to beat. A 6.55 qualified #7, and he improved to 6.44/210.77 in the opening round to beat an out-of-shape Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse." But he was disappointed in the second round, where he smoked the tires at 7.48 in a loss to eventual winner Segrini's 6.60. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 6.78/191.08 qualified #7 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round against Kosty Ivanof and shut off to a 10.14/67.77. Billy did not run high speeds ever on the NHRA tour. His 6.287/223.32 low qualifier at Indy was his fastest. The 6.197 was at only 218.44 on race day. Where did he run the cited 231?

Notes: The first time Emery drove this car in competition was at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the field. Emery set a track record at Edgewater Park National Open at 6.53/230.76 and ran 6.38/231.95 at Bristol. | Dale won the NHRA Division 1 Opener at Englishtown on May 6. He set both Low ET and Top Speed at 6.44/222.22 and beat Pee Wee Wallace in the final with a 6.48/183.29. At the NHRA Division 3 Opener, he won again. This time he set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.44/228.42 while beating Jim Paoli. The second Division 3 race was held at National Trail, and Dale qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.94. In the first round, he improved to 6.73 but lost to a holeshot by Al Segrini, whose 6.76 got the win. On May 24, Emery was at Dragway 42 in Ohio for the AHRA Grand American. The car wasn't up to speed, but Dale beat Tom Hoover's ailing Satellite in the first round with an 8.01. In round two, a 7.12/162.45 lost to Dean LaPole's "pure" Chevy-powered car at 6.78/193. He qualified #5 back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. He beat Clare Sanders in the "Ramchargers" car in the first round with a 6.63, but in round two, he slowed to 7.28/173.74 that lost to Prudhomme's troubled 7.02/216. A 6.61 qualified #14 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. In the first round, he advanced with a 6.56/228.42 when Russell Long's Charger broke. In round two, he picked up the pace to 6.46/229.00, beating Jim Nicoll's 6.83. Dale lost in the semifinals when his car broke against Leroy Goldstein. On July 25, Emery was at Maple Grove for its All-American race. It was a sixteen-car show, and he made it into the final before being stopped by Ed McCulloch. A 6.63/217.91 in the final lost to Ed's 6.45/225. Dale was runner-up again, this time to Paul Radici, on July 29 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Tri-City Dragway in Michigan. He ran 6.61/221.13 (Top Speed) in the final but lost to Paul's 6.54/209. At the NHRA Grandnationals in early August, Emery qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.71/216.34. A first-round 6.73/216 beat Harlan Thompson; in the semifinals, he had a great leave, and his 6.71/215.35 beat Goldstein's 6.70/218 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In the final, he went up against Frank Mancuso and took his first NHRA victory with a 6.70/219.50 (Top Speed) that beat Mancuso's 6.80. Emery qualified #8 in the 32-car show with a 6.60/222.77 at AHRA's National Challenge. He improved to 6.56/216 in the first round while beating John Dekker's 6.66/225. In round two, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.88 with a 6.61/216, but an off-pace 6.91/206 in round three lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/197. With 50 FCs attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Dale ran 6.45/224.43 to qualify #10. A first-round 6.69/207 lost to Jim Liberman's 6.41. On September 8, he was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round against Paul Day. Dale set a new IHRA Speed record in the final while winning at Bristol for the IHRA All-American Nationals. His final round 6.38/231.95 beat Raymond Beadle who smoked the tires in Don Schumacher's Vega. His speeds were real; in round two, he ran 6.48/225.56 over Shirl Greer and, in the semifinals, hit 227.27 while beating Billy Meyer. He was in the final at the next IHRA race as well, the US Open Nationals at Rockingham, where he runner-upped to Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega. Dale finished runner-up to Tom McEwen at NHRA Ontario, where he ran amazing 6.280/229.59 best times. Info and times from National Dragster, 2/01/74.

Where was the 264.70 run? | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #9 with a 5.57. He beat low qualifier John Force in the first round, and Jim Head in round two before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Tom was at DeSoto Dragway in March for the IHRA Supernationals. In the first round his Firebird broke behind the line giving eventual winner Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird a solo into the semifinals. He made the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and lasted until round two where he got out of shape and shut off against Ed McCulloch. He also lasted until the second round at the IHRA Texas Nationals. There his 5.55/260.41 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.50/264. The next NHRA stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Hoover qualified #13 with a 5.77, but he lost to John Martin in round one. A week later (May 22), he was running at the IHRA Springnationals where he ran 5.76 in qualifying #5. In the first round, he only needed a 6.02/216.91 to advance when Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max," got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, Tom ran another 5.76 at 242.61, but lost to Oswald's 5.64/261. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May, and Hoover qualified for the show, but lost to Bruce Larson in the first round.

A week later (April 19), he was up against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in another best of three match at Connecticut. Bill won the first two races with runs of 7.83/183.29 and 7.73/191.48 to sew up the match, but the two decided to make a third run for the fans. This time Bill lost his transmission on the line and Frank took a win with a 7.72/187. He ran really well at Maple Grove on June 20 for an eight-car show. In the first round, he ran a track record 7.15 at 198 while beating Tom Sneden's 7.45/196. But in the semifinals, his quicker 7.54/190 lost to Phil Castronovo's 7.56/191. Flynn was at Epping, N. H., on September 20 for the Fourth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals. It was a big 32 car show and Bill made it all the way into the semifinals. He started his day by beating the "Super Twister" with a 7.27/206.80. A 7.40/208 beat Sarge Arciero in the "Frantic Ford" in round two. He got crossed-up in the third round, but he still advanced with a 7.84/160 before losing to Jim Liberman's 7.37/207 in the semifinal with an ailing 11.40 time.

Used to win the '69 Coke Circuit. Gary Dyer drove after recovering from burn injuries in 1968 Charger fire at US 30 in Gary, Ind. | Ran 7.46 at York US 30. Early in the season, Gary Dyer had planned on retiring from driving, and Norm Weekly was put behind the wheel. But the "racing bug" returned and before long, Dyer was once again driving the car. Norm went on to drive Chris Karamesines' new FC. The Charger 500 body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. It was narrowed ten inches and chopped two. The interior tin was done by Lee Austin, and it was his first attempt. It turned out really well. The Logghe Brother's 125" chassis held a stock-stroke 426 Hemi built by Dyer. It used M/T rods and pistons. Crower was the camshaft of choice. The heads were also done by Dyer. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and once again Dyer was involved as he prepared his own GMC 6/71. Up on top sat a Hilborn four port injector. The 1,500 hp was transferred to the 4.56 Dana rear end by a TorqueFlite transmission. Gary was a regular on the, new for '69, Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour.

Notes: Skuza's first NHRA event of the season was at the Gatornationals. He had lots of problems there, and his 11.20-74.44 best failed to qualify. He did better at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where although he still failed to qualify, he improved to 6.39/155.89. Dean was the first alternate at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 6.06 best. Things really clicked at Englishtown in May for the Mopar Parts Nationals. His 5.26/274.80 qualified #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Cellone in the opening round. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.44/254.02. The next stop was at Topeka at the end of June for the NHRA Western Nationals. Skuza qualified #9 with a 5.41/271.98. But once again, he fell in the first round, this time to Kenji Okazaki. He bypassed the following few events before returning to the schedule at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't an issue. Dean's 7.61/112.55 qualified #14. This time he lost to Chuck Etchell's in round one. Then came Indy, Dean's 5.34/284.09 just made the field qualifying on the "bump." In the first round, his 5.39/269.46 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.15/285. He stepped it up at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.25/277.17 qualified #7. Despite the good qualifying effort, he still lost in the first round to Okazaki. He ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.08/291.07 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He also got his first-round win of the year when his 5.25/274.47 beat Tom Hoover's 5.35/271. In round two, his 5.26/274.89 lost to Freddie Neely's 5.16/288. He also ran well at the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.19/284.45. A slightly better 5.17/290.13 fell o Del Worsham's 5.17/292 in the first round. Dean ran his best ET of 5.087/291.07 at the NHRA Sears/Craftsman Nats, Topeka 1993. He ran 5.088/294.69 for his best speed at the 1993 World Finals. Notes: Ed was at Fremont for its Nitro Bowl early in January. All cars there were to run three rounds with the winner based on the number of wins in the competition. Ed won his first race with a 6.60/218.44 (Top Speed) over Dale Pulde's 6.87/155 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In round two, his 6.62 beat Jake Johnston, who got out of shape and shut off in the "Pisano-Matsubara" car. But in his final run, he ran his best ET, and it wasn't good enough. His 6.52 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.51, and McEwen's win gave him the title as he won all three of his races. Ed then went to OCIR for its season opener, where once again he set Top Speed, this time at 217.91, but lost to Johnston in round two. He did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, nor was he at Beeline for the NHRA Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.24/225.56 and an opening-round 6.37/210.28 beat John Lombardo. A second-round 6.32/220.58 beat a tire-shaking Tripp Shumake, and in the semifinals, he broke a throttle linkage and slowed to 9.75 but lucked out as opponent Gene Snow fouled. He then faced Don Prudhomme in the final, and despite running a good 6.36/223.88, he still finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.26/227. He then went to OCIR for its East vs. West Meet, and while he didn't win, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/232.55. Early in March, Irwindale held its Night Opener. Eight cars made two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ed was nowhere near running quick enough to reach the final. In his first race, both he and Lombardo smoked the tires with the "Ace's" 7.40 coming out on top. He again smoked the hides in his second race, finally backing out of it to 13.15, while eventual winner McEwen won with a 6.67. McCulloch ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Jim Dunn. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He competed at the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race on March 20.27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.50 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.61/200.44 beat Mike Halloran who broke. In the second round, his 6.43/211.76 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.32/182. A week later, McCulloch was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven Opener. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.50/227.84. In the first round, he got a solo as Steve Leach had crashed in qualifying. Ed advanced with a 6.63/196.93. But in round two, he had problems against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and his shut off 12.41 lost to Jim's strong 6.19. On the Fourth of July weekend Ed was entered in the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Ed beat a broken Larry Gould while breaking himself on the run. Ed’s best NHRA national event times were 6.161/237.46 at Indy. Did Ed run 6.15 somewhere this year? | Indy runs were in the new Foster/Hume car debuted that August. In the pictured '75-'76 car, he also won the SIR Funny Car opener in early April with a 6.46 over Mike Miller's Boredom Zero Mustang II. - Joe Moore

Notes: Blown fuel. This car was built late in 1966, probably did not hit the strip until 1967. Alley ran this same chassis through 1970 with Cudas replacing the Charger, and a Duster replacing the Cuda bodies.

Notes: The first 290 mph Funny Car in the sport at Ennis 1991 with a 290.13 blast. Wes Cerny's 290 mph tuning skills on this car caught the attention of Kenny Bernstein, who hired him for the 1992 season, resulting in the sport's first 300 mph run. Photo from Indy 1991. | Jim qualified #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with track records of 5.25/278.63. The team was running a new engine set-up that used Leonard Hughes cylinder heads with Wes Cerny's tune up. They actually qualified with their "old" engine and switched to the "new" combination for eliminations. A first-round 5.39/277.26 stopped Gary Litton's 5.58/259. In round two, Dominic Santucci lost to White's 5.36/273.63 and a semifinal 5.33/272.89 beat Mark Oswald, who smoked the tires and shut off. He faced Mike Dunn in the final. Their times in eliminations had been close, but White's 5.39/263.77 finished second best to Dunn's 5.34/275. The "Hawaiian" team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where, once again, Jim qualified #1 with track records of 5.34/274.72. The field was short, so White got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.35/274.72 (again!) He was flexing the car's power as that was easily Low ET of the opening round. In round two, he downed Ed McCulloch with a 5.41/255.39 and a semifinal 5.44/270.83 beat Al Hofmann, whose car broke an A-arm on the run. He came up against John Force in the final. White had been running a tenth faster than Force. Jim got the victory with a 5.54/271.90 when Force tried to match the "Hawaiian's" times and put too much power into it and smoked the tires. Jim continued to set track records at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.18 track record at 280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #1 for the third straight NHRA event. An opening round 5.39/273.47 beat Gary Bolger's 5.53/261 and a 5.38/276.66 beat Santucci's close 5.38/272 in round two. But in the semifinals, White blew an engine and slowed to a 5.70/193.88, losing to eventual winner Del Worsham's 5.37/272. The team's combination didn't work quite as well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Jim’s 5.50/263.00 qualified #4 and he was upset in the first round, when Richard Hartman's 5.71/255 got the better of his 5.74/249.30. Jim's 291.82 at the World Finals was the Top Speed of the entire meet, including the Top Fuelers.

Notes: Pulde qualified #8 at Pomona for NHRA Winternationals with 5.24/281.07. He improved to 5.11/285.53 in the opening to defeat Gary Bolger. In round two, his 5.12/284.27 beat Cruz Pedregon's 5.20/287. But despite running a consistent 5.13/283.37 in the semi-final, he got left on by John Force, and Force's 5.15/288 held on to win. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.18/282.84 qualified #3. Unfortunately, he shut down early with problems in the first round and lost to Gordon Mineo's 6.14/163. He did not go to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, but he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #4 there at 5.12/289.76. But he went home early again as his off-pace 5.82/240.77 fell to Bolger's 5.35/262 in the first round. Dale's best times were 5.088 at Ennis and 289.76 at Gainesville.

Notes: Cruz Pedregon started the NHRA season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 4.935/307.06. An opening round 5.08/296.06 beat Gary Densham, and in round two, his 5.12/299.10 took out Dale Pulde. He faced John Force in the semifinals, and Cruz smoked the tires and lost to John's 5.25/298. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.17 qualified #4, but he fouled against Kenji Okazaki in the first round. Only sixteen cars showed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, so qualifying wasn't an issue - Pedregon's 5.16/300.30 got him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.21/268.89, followed by a second round 5.11/297.02 that advanced over a fouling Al Hofmann. But in the semifinals, he and Force had a good race that saw Force's 5.08/300 outrun Cruz's 5.13/301.30.
