Notes: A great-looking machine that was lost in a spectacular top end crash at the '77 Nationals in Indy. Dale broke his arm in that crash. Formerly listed 6.085/236 best, but Cars Magazine article cited 6.07/237. | I also have those numbers from GVR for '77, but wasn't sure if the whole 'timing' thing at GVR was legit now. If those numbers were still considered sketchy, I found a 6.18 at Union Grove and a 234.98 at Indy in '77. - Dennis Doubleday | Ran 6.33/209.79 at PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. Also legit 6.192 at the NHRA Winters. On May 15, Dale won the NHRA Division 4 race at Houston. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49. Due to his low qualifying run, he got the odd-lot solo in round one, and ran 6.58. A 6.56/208 beat Billy Meyer in the semifinals. Emery faced Gordon Mineo in the final and he got the victory with another 6.49 at only 183.67 over "Flash Gordon's" 6.60.

Notes: Looking back at some notes I made back in the day, I think the best run for Fever in '76 was a 6.61/237 at US 30. I choose to forget most of what happened in '76 :-). Our car always ran about the same ETs at US 30 as elsewhere, but it would mile per hour better if Ed drove it out the back door. That's because the speed trap at 30 was from the finish line to 30 feet beyond the finish line, while at other tracks, it was from 15 feet in front of the finish line to 15 feet behind the finish line. So It was possible to add another five to ten mph. That 6.61/237 at 30 in '76 probably would have been a 6.61/227 at Martin. - Paul Stenquist | The car was destroyed at Martin, Michigan, on May 23 during the NHRA Division Three race. Notes: Summernationals Champ one year, runner-up the other. Confirm photo is from 1974 or 1975 (note says 1974 at York). | Liberman started his '75 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He didn't get very far as in the first round, his ailing 8.17 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.48. Jim qualified #1 with a 6.30 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He made it into the second round before smoking his tires and losing to Jim Dunn. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified fifth, but lost early. A 6.33 at Pomona qualified him seventh for the NHRA Winternationals and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, before smoking his tires on a 7.11/166 loss to Mike Miller's 6.50/217. Qualified at 6.306/227.27 at Ontario Finals. Was that in the Vega or the Monza?

Notes: Second Fever car. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. | The second Vette, the yellow one, was a handful as well. It would make it to the end of the track with a stock stroke motor, but was way up on the tires. I remember looking at the black tracks: They were only about three inches wide at the finish line. Both of the Vettes always had handling problems - they got up way too high on the tires. They didn't have enough downforce, due to how close the spoiler was to the rear of the roof - I think. That did produce big mph. We ran over 230 a number of times, with a best ET of 6.37, running a stock stroke motor built - I believe - to approximately the same combination as those that Dale Pulde and Cliff Brown were running. Jungle watched the car run somewhere one day, shook his head and said you guys gotta put a lot more spoiler on that thing. Finally, I asked the guys who owned the car - Tollstam, Trybula, and Marrone - to make a new spoiler for the rear, at least ten inches taller with air dams on the side. I was working on the car by myself at the time, and I had all I could do to get the motor and clutch ready. I dropped the body off at Frank's boneyard, and he said he'd try to get it done. He didn't. Our next race was at Martin. I had another stroker motor in the car, and Ed went backwards into the guardrail at about half track when the car got totally loose. That was the last of the Corvette experiment. When McEwen premiered his Vette the next year (with the newer body style) it had a tall spoiler with air dams. And yes, somewhere in between the US 30 crash and the Martin crash, the car got turned around at Detroit Dragway and slid through the traps backwards. And that's the whole Fever Vette story. - Paul Stenquist

Notes: Bobby won the AHRA Southern Nationals at Memphis on May 31, running a 7.74/191.31 in the final. On June 28, at Miami-Hollywood, he met Paula Murphy for a best two out of three match race. In the first race, he set a 7.65 track record at 194.38 over Paula, who fouled on an 8.17/189 pass. Wood won all three races with second and third runs of 7.78/191.88 and 7.73/190.66. On July 6, he was runner-up to Arnie Behling when they both ran 7.72 in the final of US 30's Grand Prix of Drag Racing. Bobby's speed was 204. The following day, they ran again at US 30, and this time Wood won with a 7.58/207 (Top Speed) after earlier setting Low ET at 7.49. On July 11, he faced a tough match race against Leonard Hughes at Memphis. The first race went to Wood's 7.59/191 when Hughes got out of shape. He won the second race as well with a 7.61/191.92, beating Hughes' 7.65/202. In the third race, Leonard's 7.71/195 beat Wood's 7.78, but his two wins had already won Bobby the match. On August 3 at Shelby Raceway, he set a new NHRA record at 7.58 while beating Ed Schartman three straight. His times were 7.58/194, 7.54/191, and 7.58/190. Ed's best was a 7.97/181. Still, on the match race trail, he met Sid Foster on August 9 at Palmetto and won three straight with a 7.56/198, winning the first race when Foster fouled on a 7.72/194 pass. Foster's Torino broke and couldn't make the final two races, so Wood ran a 7.54/180 while breaking a blower drive and a track record 7.39 at 201. On September 7, he went back to Shelby Raceway for the Memphis Funny Car 500. He ran a first-round 7.62 when Frank Oglesby's Cougar broke. A 7.50 beat Gary Dyer in the Mr. Norm Charger in the second round. In the final, his 7.45 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.50. He qualified eighth at the NHRA Nationals at Indy with a 7.45/199.89. In the first round, Kelly Chadwick's 7.38/196 beat his 7.55/199.11. At the 900 foot track at Southeastern Dragstrip, they held an eight-car show on September 28. Bobby ran a first-round 6.20 over Scottie Sharp. In the semifinal, a 6.53 beat Paul Aray's Cuda. But a final round 6.15 by Curtis Wasson gave Wood the runner-up spot. Atlanta held its big $20,000 meet on October 12, and Bobby won it all when a final round 7.79/207.38 beat a fouling Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. On October 19, he was at Courtland for a best of three match against Schartman's Cougar driven by Arnie Behling. Wood won all three races with 7.62, 7.64, and 7.66 times. He ran a match race at Dallas on October 26 against Don Garlits' dragster. There was no handicap as the cars ran heads-up. Although Wood got out first on every run, he still lost all three races. As the season ended, he took another win at the Turkey Trot Nationals at Gainesville on November 30. He set Low ET in the final when his 7.30/193.76 beat Joe Petruccelli. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed 7.155/215 in this car, which is highly suspect for this year. Removing those times until further confirmation comes in. | Kendall GT-1 "Rebel." Held NHRA record with this car. - Danny White | Confirmed 7.45 at Memphis.

Notes: Jim was the first alternate at NHRA Pomona with a 6.39 (no speed reported). He ran well at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.40/224.32 in round two over low qualifier Dave Condit who got out of shape and shut off. Unfortunately, the car broke against eventual winner Simon Menzies in the semi-final. At OCIR's 12 annual Nitro Championships in July, Jim qualified #1 with a 6.22. He went to the final, beating Pat Foster when both had sub-par runs, but Dunn won. Jim's next national event was Seattle, where he had a great race. He qualified #4 at 6.10/236.84. In round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein with another 6.100/238.98 to 6.24/238.09. Round two saw Jim take a 6.14/232.55 decision over Tom Ridings at 6.49/184. He upset Don Prudhomme in the semis, 6.17/223.32 to 6.26/223. Jim shut off to a troubled 12.11/64 in the final, giving the win to Raymond Beadle at 6.22/230. Jim was the 7th alternate at Ontario (times not reported). Photo from Indy 1980. | At a June '79 SIR 16-car AA-BB/FC match race, John Force beat Jim Dunn with a 6.40/216 to Dunn's quicker 6.36/222. I recorded the cars (and ETs) on a cassette player. - Joe Moore

Notes: Tom Ridings got the Joe Pisano ride for 1979. The team qualified #13 at the Winternationals with a 6.368/231.36 and then lost a close first-round race to the team's former driver, Pat Foster, in the Super Shops car, 6.251/234.37 to 6.383/226.70. In April, Tom was at OCIR for its big 64 car show. He set Low ET at 6.15, but in the final, his 6.88 fell to Raymond Beadle's 6.28 in the "Blue Max." Their next NHRA event was Seattle, where Ridings claimed the bump spot at 6.30 with a booming 238.09 mph. He won a thrilling 6.240/235.60 to 6.240/238.72 first-round battle over Tom McEwen but fell to Jim Dunn in round two, 6.140/232.55 to 6.490/184.80. The team qualified #10 at the Ontario Finals at 6.415/224.43 and claimed a 6.679/223.32 to 6.723/230.76 upset over Kenny Bernstein in round one. In round two, John Force won a close but off-pace battle to put them out, 7.238/217.39 to 7.271/205.01. We need confirmation of a 6.00 ET the team reportedly ran this year. Where did that occur? I recall hearing about it but do not know where it was run.

Notes: Skuza's first NHRA event of the season was at the Gatornationals. He had lots of problems there, and his 11.20-74.44 best failed to qualify. He did better at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where although he still failed to qualify, he improved to 6.39/155.89. Dean was the first alternate at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 6.06 best. Things really clicked at Englishtown in May for the Mopar Parts Nationals. His 5.26/274.80 qualified #9. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Cellone in the opening round. He was the first alternate at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.44/254.02. The next stop was at Topeka at the end of June for the NHRA Western Nationals. Skuza qualified #9 with a 5.41/271.98. But once again, he fell in the first round, this time to Kenji Okazaki. He bypassed the following few events before returning to the schedule at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Only 15 cars showed, so qualifying wasn't an issue. Dean's 7.61/112.55 qualified #14. This time he lost to Chuck Etchell's in round one. Then came Indy, Dean's 5.34/284.09 just made the field qualifying on the "bump." In the first round, his 5.39/269.46 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.15/285. He stepped it up at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where his 5.25/277.17 qualified #7. Despite the good qualifying effort, he still lost in the first round to Okazaki. He ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.08/291.07 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Heartland Nationals. He also got his first-round win of the year when his 5.25/274.47 beat Tom Hoover's 5.35/271. In round two, his 5.26/274.89 lost to Freddie Neely's 5.16/288. He also ran well at the NHRA Chief Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.19/284.45. A slightly better 5.17/290.13 fell o Del Worsham's 5.17/292 in the first round. Dean ran his best ET of 5.087/291.07 at the NHRA Sears/Craftsman Nats, Topeka 1993. He ran 5.088/294.69 for his best speed at the 1993 World Finals. Notes: Tony had a great NHRA season, qualifying nearly everywhere and running some stout numbers. He drove a Thunderbird through Columbus, where a blower explosion destroyed that body. Was the Daytona just a new body? It probably debuted at Englishtown, where Tony qualified with a 5.429/243.27 and lost to Don Prudhomme in round one. | At the IHRA Loctite Nationwise World Nationals in Norwalk, McCallum qualified #4 for the 8 car field with a 5.568/238.73 & Faced #5 qualifier Doc Halladay in Round 1 where McCallum would lose. | Tony died in a car crash (later this year?) Pomona Finals: 5.050/289.20 Q7. Lost R1 to Okazaki, 5.19/299 to 5.550/254.52. Like Hoover, one had to wonder what caused the inconsistency for some teams this year. Inconsistent clutch discs?

Notes: Tom debuted his new Sarte-built car at Phoenix on January 25 for the Winter Classic. He qualified at 6.34/220.04 behind Gary Burgin and Don Prudhomme. Bill Leavitt fouled against him in the first round, and Prock ran 7.23/141.95 to advance. Unfortunately, the car broke against Dale Emery in round two. At Pomona, he qualified #11 for the NHRA Winternationals at 6.305/220.35. A 6.303/221.13 in the opening round dropped Raymond Beadle's 6.45/215 in the "Blue Max." In round two, Gordie Bonin got crossed up and shut off against him, and Tom ran 6.277/212.76 to advance. In the semi-final, his 6.819/200.89 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.74/225. In 1976, Green Valley Race City track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The first was on February 7/8, and Tom Prock won both days on his first trip ever to the state of Texas. Saturday, Prock beat Jim Nicoll with a 6.14/226, and on Sunday, he stopped Ray Motes with a 6.14/233.76. The second 200 MPH FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, March 6/7. Prock won Saturday with a 5.974 at 233.76 mph over Dick Custy. This run officially made Prock the second FC driver in the fives behind Prudhomme's 5.98 at Ontario, CA, on October 12, 1975. Initially, Prock's run was to be entered into the Cragar 5-Second Funny Car Club, but the NHRA intervened. That club eventually included only runs recorded at NHRA National Events and the 5.99 of Pat Foster clocked at a booked-in show at Fremont with the Super Shops Arrow. Meanwhile, Sunday was a rainout and rescheduled for the next series event. At Gainesville, Tom's 6.472/222.22 qualified #9 for the NHRA Gatornationals. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Burgin. Gary went into a wheelstand and shut down while Prock won their race with a 6.39/224.43. He smoked the tires and lost to Shirl Greer in round two with a 12-second shutoff. He then went to Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals and won over an eight-car field. His 6.57 in the first round beat Ray Sherman, and another 6.57 at 209.30 took out Beadle's 6.57/220 in the semi-final. He faced Burgin in the final, and Tom got a great light, and his 6.52/219.51 hung on to take the victory over Gary's better 6.43/222. At the end of March, he was at Warner-Robins for the NHRA Division Two opener. He ran 6.76/200.89 to qualify second to Greer's 6.60/213. These two would meet in the final. In round one, Prock's 6.62/210.28 beat Willie Borsch, followed by a 6.59/203.16 to beat Larry Fullerton, who had his 'chute fall out. But Prock's car broke in the final, and Greer soloed for the win. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event was different as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Tom Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. Tom was the first alternate at NHRA Columbus at 6.636/216.34. When the '76 AHRA Nationals started on Friday, July 2, Gordon Mineo led the sixteen-car FC field at 6.09/225.56, followed by Dale Emery in the new Burkhart Monza at 6.21/214. On Saturday, rain left teams with only one more session, and Mineo remained on top with few changes in the field. On Sunday, hot weather kept Mineo still the leader at 6.09. Prock moved to second ahead of Emery, and Hoover moved to fourth, followed by Snow and Paul Gordon. On Monday, Prock beat Larry Gould, Snow, and Hoover to face McEwen in the final. Prock won with a 6.12/236.84. Prock ran Low ET and Top Speed of 6.08/236.84 against Snow. Tom qualified #3 at NHRA Englishtown with a 6.272/230.17. He took a 7.024/138.46 win over a fouling Raymond Beadle at 6.56/222. But he did not show against Dodger Glenn. Tom qualified #2 at NHRA Sanair at 6.350/225.56. He won round one over Pee Wee Wallace, 6.43/219.51 to 6.64/210.77, and ran 6.36/218.97 to win round two when Tom McEwen didn't show. In the final, his solid 6.32/230.76 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.17/235. At Indy, Tom qualified #8 at 6.162/231.95. In round one, he ran 6.244/223.32 to beat Stan Bowman's 6.44/205. Gary Burgin got the best of him in round two, however, 6.21/238 to 6.521/180.36. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year. AKA Utica Flash. We formerly listed 237.46 for Tom this year. We originally thought that was great AHRA Green Valley and are updating it based on the GVRC report. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner

Notes: Won INDY. Silver and Black Vette. Also 6,264 232.55 at 78 Winters and 231.95 at 78 Springnationals. Ran 6.05/235.60 in big Indy win over Prudhomme. This car was sold to Dick Moritz then to Jamie Hopheimer/Whit Bazemore and to Donnie Holbrook and to Troy Ray. | McEwen started his season at the OCIR Super Bowl event in February Unfortunately, he had problems against Raymond Beadle driving the Blue Max" and shut down to a 10.54 loss in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's 6.26/232.55 qualified #5. He beat Dave Condit's 6.45/216 in the first round, with a 6.32/220 and in round two his 6.42/216 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. It was a good old "Snake vs. Mongoose" semifinal that saw the "Goose" have problems and slow to 7.63/137 loss to Don Prudhomme's 6.41/229. He then laid low and the "English Leather" Corvette was not seen again until early May when he showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a eight-car field and his 6.29/194.80 qualified #3. He improved by a tenth in round one where his 6.19/216.86 defeated Jim Moore's 6.79/164. He blasted low qualifier,Gordie Bonin in the emi-final with a 6.22/221.67 that put the Firebird's 6.41/230 on the trailer. He faced the "Snake" in the final and the two old pals had a great race that saw Don get the victory with a 6.11/238 over Tom's 6.18/217.91.The following week(May 13), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race.A 6.20 qualified #4 but in the opening round, he extremely late 6.07/217.91 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.29/229.Shortly after that, he was at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was supposed to be a eight-car show but a field was a couple cars short.McEwen got to solo in the first round and he did, running 6.19/206.89.For some reason, he was given another solo in the semifinal and this time he shut down at 6.95. Once again he was up against Prudhomme in the final. This time the two didn't get a chance to race as Tom had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure so the "Snake" solo'ed with a 10.17 for the win. His next stop was Detroit Dragway for the UDRA North American Grandnationals. All cars ran the first round "qualifying" that had the eight lowest ET cars reguardless of winning or losing advance in the first round of actual competition.Tom set low Et with a 6.23. In the first round of actual competition, he advanced with a 6.34/194.38. In the semifinal, the car again lost oil pressure and the "Goose" had to shut it down on the line against Tom Prock. He ended the month of May at the three day Drag Racing Olympics at Union Grove. He made sure everyone knew that he was there. On Friday, May 27, he qualified for the final four with a 6.36. In the semifinal, he dropped the Pete Williams driven, "Chi-Town Hustler's" 6.32 with a 6.29. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the results were the same.Don's 6.14/229 beat his 6.19/221.67. On Saturday, he qualified for the final four with a 6.23.There were eighteen cars attempting to qualify.Tom's time was the third best. But this time the "Snake" got to him in the semifinal.Don's 6.10/236 trailed the Corvette's 6.22/223.32. On Sunday, the field swelled to twenty four cars.Tom qualified for the final four with a second quickest 6.24. He beat Bob Pickett's 6.43/225 in the semifinal with a 6.32/201.34.Low and behold, he faced Prudhomme in yet another final round. But this time, the "Snake" got out of shape and had to shut off while McEwen ran 6.28/222.22 for the victory. It was then off to St.Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.A 6.41/211.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat a tire smoking Gene Snow in the opening round with a 6.48/212.76. In the semifinal, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires but the "Goose's" 7.16 came out on top. He faced his protege, John Collins in the final. The two had a good race with the student getting the better of the teacher.Collins' 6.46 took the win over McEwen's 6.67 runner-up effort. That was followed by a trip to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The car got the award for best appearing. This car was more than just show though, and Tom proved it by qualifying second with a 6.16/217.91 behind Prudhomme's 6.07/240.These two would meet in the final(what else is new).McEwen opened up eliminations with a 6.31/216.86 over Bonin's 6.49/223.A second round 6.25/215.31 dispatched Billy Meyer's ailing ride.John Lombardo's 6.26/233 fell to his 6.17/230.76 in the semifinal.Problem was,Prudhomme had won his semifinal heat with a 6.07/241.Tom needed to pick up a tenth for his final round race. He didn't.The two ran almost exactly the same times they had run in the semifinals, with Don's 6.07/240 getting the win over Tom's 6.17/231.95.By this time, McEwen must have been tired of playing second fiddle to the "Snake".The week following the Springnationals(June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. There was no Prudhomme in site as he was racig elsewhere.Tom's 6.36/219 qualified second for the eight-car field behind Snow's 6.26/216.After that, McEwen was unstoppable. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.73 in the "Blue Max" in the first round with a 6.36/219.Like a bracket racer, he ran another 6.36 in the semifinal to beat Hoover's 6.42. He went up against Johh White in the final, and even though he slowed a bit,to a 6.39/210, he won easily as White had problems and shut down. Both the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" were at Martin, Michigan on June 24 for the NHRA Division Three race.Tom's 6.18/217.91 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.09/237.But the two would never run each other.Tom's easy 6.31 in the first round beat alternate,Paul Radici. In the semifinal, his 6.22/216.86 got back by Tom Anderson's 6.20/215.The "Snake" would go on to win. Best NHRA speed was 236.84 at Ontario. Formerly listed 241.28. We need to confirm if the Goose ran that speed in 1978 and where.

Notes: Began the year with the Monza but later switched to the Corvette. They ran 6.382/222.77 to qualify #12 at NHRA Pomona, CA but hit the guardrail in round one. A 6.668/222.77 was the first alternate at the Gatornationals. The team stepped up to the #5 qualifier at NHRA Columbus with a 6.200/235.60 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.33/229 to 6.43/229.59. Ron also qualified #5 at Englishtown at 6.130/236.84. He beat Kenny Bernstein in round one, 6.23/236.22 to 6.52/205. In round two, Ron laid a massive holeshot on Don Prudhomme and took a 6.33/236.22 to 6.17/241 victory. However, Ed McCulloch got to him in the semis, 6.13/236 to 6.65/230.76. We think the Corvette debuted at Indy. | R/U to the resurgent Blue Max at the '78 SIR 64 FC meet, then the Fallnationals over the War Eagle, who won the rain-delayed SIR opener that April over Ivo. - Joe Moore

Notes: AKA 240 Gordie. At the NHRA Winternationals, Bonin set Top Speed in qualifying with a 6.18/245.23 that placed him in thirteenth on the grid. It wouldn't be fair not to mention that the front end was up on that pass, and he drove it through to qualify. Few drivers would have been able to save that run. In the first round, he beat Don Prudhomme with a 6.27/242.58 but failed to get the car stopped and drove the car into the catch net. In round two, he lost to Kosty Ivanof. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #15, and in the first round, he crossed the centerline and lost to Dale Pulde. He won the NHRA Division race at Beeline. In the final, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.42/227 with a 6.22 (Low ET) at 237.46. He also ran 6.18/231 at the US Nationals but failed to qualify on a 6.10 bump!

Notes: 1984 was not Tom's most successful year. He qualified #3 for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.25 but fouled against Bryan Raines in the first round. He failed to qualify at Pomona (#4 alternate at 6.15/236.84), and things didn't go much better at Gainesville, where he was the sixth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 6.362/233.16. He also missed the field in Atlanta, finishing as the #2 alternate at 6.217/238.09. Early in May, Tom was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.53/168 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round of eliminations. He also lost in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships after qualifying #9. Hoover qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a booming 6.057/250.00, but that resulted in a first-round loss to Jim Head, 5.84/254 to 6.98/138. Indy also was disappointing as he failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals with a #5 alternate 6.070/239.36 effort. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year.

Notes: Blown fuel-128" square-tube chrome moly chassis by R&B Automotive. Fiberglass Ltd. body. The car debuted later in the 1966 season, running most of 1967. - DD | Gary Dyer's new '67 mount was up and running late in '66. Owner Norm Krause of Grand-Spaulding Dodge in Chicago estimated the new Charger cost about $25,000. That was a very high dollar amount in those days. It took eight months to build. The engine was a stock-sized 426 Hemi that used M/T rods and 8.5:1 pistons. Racer Brown supplied the roller cam. The only modifications to the heads were a polish job by Dyer, although the valves were from Donovan. The blower drive and manifold came from Cragar, and the GMC 6/71 was overdriven 17%. A Hilborn gear-driven pump and fuel injection delivered the 40% nitro to the engine. Dyer had little engine trouble in '66, with most of his troubles coming from transmission breakage. The TorqueFlite was used again for this car, but this time the aluminum planetary shafts were replaced by custom-built steel ones. The power was put to the ground through a Mopar rear that ran either 3.70 or 3.90 gears, depending on the track. The total weight of the car was 1,920 lbs. Grand-Spaulding Dodge painted the Charger a Rally Red enamel with silver leaf. ET Fontana 1966 (12/02/66 Drag News) MPH Fontana 1966 (12/02/66 Drag News)

He improved to 5.26/287.44 in the opening round, but he lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.23/273. He won the next race, the NHRA Arizona Nationals. His 5.14/288.27 qualified #7, and in the opening round, his 5.24/282.57 advanced when Dean Skuza fouled. In round two, Del Worsham's 5.25/264 lost to John's 5.23/285.35. He then defeated Dale Pulde in the semifinal with a 5.37/289.48. His final-round opponent was Cruz Pedregon, who had not run any slower than 5.20 in eliminations. The two had a great race that had Force getting his 33rd NHRA career victory, with a 5.18/288.83 that just nipped Pedregon's 5.19/253.

Notes: John started the year at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23. In the first round, he lost a supercharger, and his 6.00/200.89 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.99/238. He qualified #3 at Pomona for the Winternationals with a 5.73/256.41. A first-round 5.76/253 beat Jody Smart, but another 5.76/258 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.74/252 in round two. | At the Sacramento Raceway Winter Classic 4 Car Funny Car show, Force ran 5.69/247.94 in Round 1 & the Low ET 5.65/244.57 in Round 2 & then was the Runner Up to Rick Johnson where Force ran a 5.81/245.91 losing effort to Johnson's 5.72/254.24. | He went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals and set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.76. He lasted until round two when a spark plug blew out of the cylinder, and he had to shut off, giving Dale Pulde a solo into the semifinals. At the Gatornationals, John again qualified #3, this time with a 5.71/254.66. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.55/204.26 loss to Prudhomme's 5.78/251. John won the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza over Paul Smith in the Custom Body car, 6.29/229.88 to a tractionless 7.36/125.87. National Dragster indicated that "Force was batting about .735 at Raceway Park and had an impressive big-buck operation with the Coke-backed 'Vette." Force ran a 5.85/254.09 at Atlanta for the Southern Nationals to qualify #5. A 6.01/251.25 in the first round, lost to Smart's 5.95/224. His next stop was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. He made it into the final against Tom Hoover but was forced to shut off on the line with a water leak. On May 19, he was at Alamo Dragway for an eight-car show. John ran 5.91/237.46 to qualify first and then beat Doc Halladay in the first round with a 5.90/240.64. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinals with a 5.84/250.69 take and took out Johnny West. In the final, he met up with Ron Correnti driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo. John made his worst run of the meet, a 6.00/236.22, but it was enough to beat Ron's off-pace 6.45/191. His speed of 250 was the Top Speed of the meet, beating out eight Top Fuel dragsters, including Dick LaHaie and Chris Karamesines. He got a semifinal finish at the Cajun Nationals after qualifying #4 with a 5.85/241.54. He beat John Lombardo in the "Blue Max" with a 5.97/240.58 in the first round, and a 5.97/244 beat Rick Johnson in round two. But he smoked the tires in the semis and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #3, but he lost early. A 5.75/245.76 qualified #2 at National Trail for the Springnationals. He beat Mark Oswald in round one with a 5.89/247.38 but fell victim to tire smoke in round two, and his 6.29/223.32 was lost to Billy Meyer's 5.81/242. He ran at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Meet in June but had an oil pump break in the first round against Joe Amato's Mustang. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car show at the Grandnationals in Canada, so Force didn't push it in qualifying, running a 6.02/239.36 for the last spot in the field. In the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.50/179.49 and lost to John Lombardo's 5.93/246 in the "Blue Max." At the NHRA Summernationals, John qualified #3 with a 5.708/257.28. He beat Prudhomme and Jim Head in the first two rounds before smoking the tires in the semifinals and losing to Bernstein. Kenny went to Denver for NHRA's next event, the Mile High Nationals, where he qualified #3 with a 5.84/233.16. He beat John Collins in the first round with a 5.88/235.60, and in round two, his 5.95/243.24 beat Meyer's 5.99/222. This put him up against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. Dale had been running well, hitting 5.83 in his second-round win, so crew chief Austin Coil dialed in a little too much power for their race, and Force smoked the tires while Pulde ran another 5.83 to advance into the final. John skipped the NHRA Northstar Nationals but was back on tour for the US Nationals at Indy. Before the big race, he was one of the eight qualifiers for the Big Bud Shootout. Unfortunately, he was paired against Bernstein in his first-round race, and Kenny's 5.69 beat John's 5.78. The following day, John ran a strong 5.705/255.24 for the actual race to qualify #3. The field was tough, as attested by his first-round win. Force cut a good light, and his 5.83/253.52 held off Graeme Cowin's better 5.81/253. Head had problems and shut off in the second round, while John advanced with a 5.79/246.30. He and Pulde had a good race in the semifinals, but Dale's 5.79/249 outmuscled John's close 5.82/257.58. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Maple Grove for the Keystone Nationals. He lost a blower on a 5.72/232.55 pass on his last qualifying attempt. The time was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. He earlier had run 240.51. A first-round 5.97/230.88 advanced when Roy Harris lost fire. But in round two, his ailing 6.03/198.35 lost to Pulde's 5.72/246. He went to Englishtown for the following week (September 15) for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships. The two lowest ET cars would meet in the final of the ten-car show. Force qualified for the final with a 5.89, and Bruce Larson made the other half of the final with a 5.85. John won with a 5.91/248.56 (Top Speed) over Larson's 6.06/210. John also ran 5.825/243 in winning the ADRL Kansas City International Raceway event in 8/85. John's best NHRA ET was 5.705 at Indy. Did John run 5.65 somewhere this year (ADRA or IHRA)? 1985 ADRA Champion. Confirmed 5.89/245.23, 5.89/248.61, and 5.87/252.10 in winning ADRA Spokane. The best NHRA national event times were 5.705 at Indy and 258.17 at Pomona.

Notes: Tim debuted his new Firebird in April at the NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Unfortunately, he ended up as the first alternate for the show with a best of 6.108/234.98. He did much better at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, qualifying #5 with a 5.873/230.65. A first-round 5.970/240.51 lost to Jim Head's 5.94/245. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, Grose failed to qualify, with his 5.99/224 being the first alternate. Yet at the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.821/230.17. He slowed to 5.979/222.88 in a first-round loss to Dale Pulde. The following week (June 23), he was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Tim beat Bruce Larson in the first round with a 5.82/241.98, but in the semifinals, he fouled away a 5.87/241.93 against Kenny Bernstein's 5.78/243. The NHRA's next stop was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 fuel Funny Cars showed, so you didn't have to run hard to qualify for the sixteen-car field, but Tim ran a strong 5.716/248.48 to qualify #3. In the first round, he faced Bernstein, and both cars ran 5.84 (5.843/244 to Tim's 5.847/243.63), but Kenny got the win light. His next stop was Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He only qualified #10, but he beat Mark Oswald in the first round and worked his way into the final against Pulde. A good 5.85/233.16 finished runner-up to Dale's 5.78/252. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.669 at 242.06 to qualify #2 behind Bernstein's 5.62. A first-round 5.776/239.10 beat Billy Meyer, and in round two, his 5.825/240.00 took out John Collins. Grose slowed to 5.900/247.38 in the semifinals, but it was enough to beat Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." He was up against Bernstein in the final. It was a good, close race, but Kenny's 5.77/249 got the victory over Tim's 5.805/250.13. Tim qualified #10 at Bandimere at 6.056/225.00. In round one, he lost to Bernstein, 5.79/245 to 5.957/237.46. He qualified #13 at Brainerd at 5.927/240.64. In round one, he beat Billy Meyer, 6.008/239.36 to 6.48/239, but lost to John Collins in round two, 5.87/246 to 5.905/246.57. Tim qualified #10 at Indy at 5.754/258.17. Nemesis Bernstein got him in round one, again, 5.70/255 to 5.954/255.24. Tim broke through at Maple Grove, winning the inaugural NHRA Keystones. He qualified #8 at 5.745/234.78. In round one, he beat Bobby Lagana, 5.751/230.71 to 6.71/173. He beat Rick Johson in round two, 5.739/237.46 to 5.91/241. In round three, he beat Dale Pulde, 5.802/244.83, to a 13-second shut-off. In the final, he was up against Kenny Bernstein. Tim finally broke the curse, driving around a Bernstein holeshot to take a 5.821/237.96 to 5.887/234.74 win. Tim qualified #14 at Phoenix at 6.012/227.27. In round one, he lost a close one to Al Segrni, 6.00/244 to 6.036/248.28. At the World Finals, Tim qualified #13 at 5.857/248.34. In round one, he upset Dale Pulde, 5.849/243.11 to 5.88/250. Tim did not show up for his second-round race against Kenny Bernstein. His best times were the 5.669 at Englishtown and 258.17 at Indy.

Notes: Hoover failed to qualify at Pomona for the season-opening Winternationals. His best of 6.25/218.55 was a bit short of the 6.08 "bump." Tom ran much better at the Gatornationals after having a top-end fire during qualifying. Gene Snow helped tune the car, and Hoover ran a 5.86/247.93 to qualify #13. When Rick Johnson fouled, he took it easy with a 7.23/126.19 in the first round. But in the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein. He qualified last (#16) in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 6.06/234.49, and his 6.12/224.66 in the opening round fell to Billy Meyer's 5.99/250. Shortly after that, Tom was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and he reached the finals, where he would face John Force. John had to shut down with a water leak, and Hoover soloed for the victory. In June, he went to Brainerd for the Crown Auto Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.94/240 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo, who was driving the "Blue Max." He improved to 5.88/251.31 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to beat Mark Oswald's 5.84/247 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He came back out later to run a consolation race against Tom McEwen. Hoover's 5.87/252.45 beat the "Mongoose's" quicker 5.84/250. Tom ran 6.157/239.36 at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway in August. The best times of the year were 5.740/258.17 at Indy (#7 qualifier).

Notes: When the Ford Motor Company commissioned Logghe Stamping Company to build four Mercury Comets, drag racing would change forever. The four Comets, raced by Don Nicholson, Ed Schartman, Jack Chrisman, and Kenz & Leslie, were far ahead of the competition in technology. They were even ahead of fellow FoMoCo racers who were racing Holman-Moody Mustangs. The three had everybody else catching up to them in 1966. The best-known of these four funny cars was Don Nicholson's "Eliminator I." The Comet's debut was less than graceful when the body came unlatched and flew off. Ford engineers burned the damaged body on the spot. The car was fixed, and the "Eliminator I" went on a tear. In 1966, Nicholson held off the heavier stock-bodied cars despite using an injected engine. A several hundred-pound weight advantage helped, but having Earl Wade tuning for him did not hurt. This was the first funny car into the 7-second zone with a 7.96/169 at Martin (info from Dennis Doubleday and Bill Duke). Additional note: This was the first Nicholson race car with an automatic (C-6 Ford). He preferred a stick, but period accounts report the centrally located driver's seat made it physically impractical to mount a manual shifter on the tunnel. | Classified S/XS due to extreme lightweight, despite not being supercharged. | This was the future of funny car racing. | As mentioned above, the tube-framed Comet debuted at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals. When the car made a run, the wind pushed against the body, and the latch holding it in place released. The body came loose at 159 mph and flew into the air. Don was OK, if not a little bit embarrassed. Good things were soon to come. The Comet returned to competition with the latch reversed and soon changed the face of Funny Car racing forever. On April 3, he faced Ronnie Sox for a best three out of five match at Cecil County. Don won the first race with a 9.50/155.97 over Sox's 9.62/148. Sox returned to win the second race with a 9.18/153 over "Dyno's" missed shift 13.84/47.36. Don ran his first-ever "eight" as his 8.94/157.61 beat Sox in the third race. To wrap things up, a track record 8.77/160.42 won the fourth race over a fouling Sox. On April 23, he beat Cecil Yother three straight at Lassiter Raceway. The MPH clocks were out, but Nicholson's times were 8.60, 8.82, and 8.91. He ran at Cecil County again on May 7. Once again, Don took the win. He won two straight with runs of 8.65/166.66 and 8.67/166.06. A week later (May 14), he was at Cordova for a best-of-three match against Arnie Beswick's Pontiac. Don won the first round when he limped through with a broken transmission. Arnie pulled a wheelstand and busted his oil pan. Don's 8.85/149.25 beat Beswick, who again stood it up on two wheels in the second race. Just for good measure, Don won the third race with an 8.81 when Arnie broke a trans. On May 21, he faced the "Mr. Norm" Dodge driven by Ron O'Donnell at US 131 Martin, Michigan. Don won two straight when O'Donnell fouled in the first race, and in the second race, "Dyno's" 8.78/164 won when Ron shut off. The next day (May 22), he faced Doug Thorley's Nova at the same track (US 131). Don again won two straight with an 8.99/159 best. Nicholson went to Union Grove on May 27 for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. He won easily, running 8.85 at 163 to take the win. Beswick got a rematch at Detroit on June 11. Once again, the Comet was too strong, winning three straight with times of 8.61/165.13, 8.62/165.13, and a solo of 8.57/166.66. Sox also got a rematch. It was a best-of-five at Aquasco on June 26. It did not go well for Sox as "Dyno" won three straight. Ronnie was running a full second slower than the Comet. The first race saw Don's 8.58/163.63 beat Sox at 9.42. The second race had Don set an 8.37 track record at 163.63 over Sox's 9.53/117, and Don reset the track record in the third race with an 8.35/166.97 over Ronnie's 9.66/148. Kinston was "Dyno's" next stop on July 10 for a best-of-three match against Don Gay. The Pontiac's transmission gave out in their first race, and Nicholson won with an 8.96. Gay replaced the transmission, and the two were set for their second race. Gay got a big jump on Nicholson, and it looked like he would win, but the Comet shot past just before the lights to win with an 8.85 over Gay's 9.01. The car was pretty much unbeatable in match races. Dick Landy gave it a try on July 16 at US 131 in a best two out of three. Don set an 8.56 track record at 150 in the first race when Landy shut off with a blown water hose. In the second race, Dick fouled, and Nicholson won with an 8.78/161. In the third race, Don made it three in a row with an 8.68/165, beating Landy's 8.94/154. On July 30, Don took a loss when he blew a transmission in the final against Mike Buckel in the "Ramchargers" Dart at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine Super Stock International. On August 13, Don reset the funny car world record at Motor City at 8.16/174 (Bret Kepner). On August 14, Don faced off against Maynard Rupp's "Chevoom," a Hemi-powered Chevelle. It was a best of three at National Trail. Don once again won three straight, but the competition was getting closer. In the first round, the Comet's 8.41/168.42 beat Rupp's 8.83/150. The second race saw Don's 8.47/170.70 beat the Chevelle's 8.74/163. And in the final race, "Dyno" set an 8.29 track record at 170.12 over Rupp's 8.70/164. Landy got another shot at Nicholson at Alton on August 20. Don won three straight, running times a half-second quicker than Landy's Dart. Don ran 8.56/159.01 and 8.53/171.75 against Dick's best of 8.97/146 and then ran 8.42/156.52 to win the match. Then the two met again at Gary, Indiana's US 30 the next day (August 21). Dick even managed to win the first race with an 8.83/166, beating Nicholson's out-of-shape 8.87/166.64. But Don returned to win the next two races and the match, running 8.65/169.19 and a track record 8.43/176.40. At the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis, Nicholson ran 8.41 and 8.31 in time trials. He lost to Ed Schartman in the final for the S/XS class. Gay was Don's next victim. The two met up at Cecil County on September 10 for a best-of-three match. "Dyno" won the first race with an 8.28, but he lost the second when the Comet broke a rear end. He returned to win the third race and the match with an 8.33/169.59. On September 17, history was made when Don beat teammate Schartman in a best of three at US 131. Nicholson ran a 7.96/169.10 while winning the match. It was the first seven-second run for a stock-bodied automobile. A week later, Don was at Capitol facing off with Landy again. The times were getting closer. Don won the first race with an 8.48/172.74 to Landy's 9.05/163. The second race and the match race win went to Nicholson when he beat Landy's 8.82/170 with an 8.70/152.02. Don blew a head gasket on this run and could not run the third race. Dick ran a solo pass of 8.55/172. Nicholson got beat in a match race on October 8 at Green Valley by Don Gay. Nicholson won the first race when Gay crossed the centerline, but "Dyno" broke a throttle cable in the second race, and Gay took the win. In the last race, Gay put a holeshot on the Comet that even a track record 8.68 failed to beat. On October 9, Don faced a newcomer to the Funny Car ranks, Larry Reyes, in a funny-looking Barracuda called the "Kingfish" with a blown fuel-burning Hemi. The two locked horns at Wichita, Texas, for a best two out of three match. Don won two straight with a best of 8.59/164, while Reyes' best was 8.95. Shortly after that, "Dyno" went to Virginia Beach for a match race against Sox. Nicholson won two straight with reported times of 7.92 and 7.94. Gay and Nicholson had a rematch at Houston on October 22. This time "Dyno" won two straight, running a track record 8.55/168.81. | Don's 8.35 at Aquasco equaled Arnie Beswick's 8.35 from March 1966. - Bret Kepner, 7/23

Notes: Al debuted this car at Lions on June 4. Unfortunately, Vanderwoude was setting up his new injectors and failed to get in a good run. The car was featured in the Sept. '66 issue of Drag Strip. The article stated that he built the car himself with a three to four-month lead time. It used a torqueflite transmission, and the 392 was usually run on 75% nitro. It stated that he had run a best of 8.55/176.40. He was at Riverside for the HRM Championships on June 19, but he fouled against Jack Chrisman in the first round and shut off to 15.34. Al was at Irwindale on June 25 for a best of three match race against Jim Liberman, driving Lew Arrington's "Brutus." Vanderwoude did not have a good showing against the GTO. In the first race, he fouled. In the second race, his 10.77/129.68 lost to Jim's 9.41/155, and in the third race, a 10.69/134.55 lost to a 9.71/154 from "Brutus." Another best of three match was run at Lions on July 2 against Ronnie Runyan in his "Blue Hell" Corvette. Al had trouble in his first race and showed to a 13.06 that lost to Ronnie's 9.71/145, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 9.55/157.34 and 9.92/161.57. On July 23, he was at Beeline Dragway in Arizona for a best-of-three match against Steve Bovan. Al's 9.67/143 won the first race over Steve's 10.19/142. But the Chevy came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 9.62/146 and 9.80 over the Mopar's 9.79/157.34, and a shut down 11.56. A rematch between the "Flying Dutchman" and "Brutus" was run on September 17 at Fresno. Once again, Al came out on the short end of the stick when Liberman beat him three straight. Still, Vanderwoude's Dart ran well, hitting 8.69/165.44 (that lost to Jim's slower 8.85/161) and 8.83/167.28. In October, he set a track record at Houston with an 8.72. His speed on the run was 164.53.Match racer. Cool Imperial valve covers. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation.
