Notes: John was at OCIR in September for the East vs. West Championships. All sixteen cars were to make three runs. In Collins' first race, his 6.86/190.67 defeated Tripp Shumake in the "Sundance" car. John Dekker smoked the tires against him in his second race, and Collins won easily. A 7.18 in the third race beat Mike Halloran. Only he and Jim Dunn had won all their races, so they ran for the title. I have no times for their race, but Jim got the win as Collins had to settle for the runner-up spot. On October 20, he was at Fremont for its National Open. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his opponent Billy Meyer failed to fire, so John advanced with a 6.56/194. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde's 6.44/201 in the M/T Grand Am. |

Notes: Gervase O'Neill was originally from Canada before moving to California. Gervase's brother Johnny, who opened up Johnny's Tune Up in Gardena, California, was his tuner. After racing a Chevelle and a Corvette, a new Camaro was built in 1972, complete with Chevrolet cast iron Rat Power. The "King Rat" Camaro was a regular at Southern California match races until 1977. The Camaro eventually ran a best of 6.67 with pure Chevy power. Only a couple of racers went faster with a Chevy. Gervase might not have been a big winner or as well known as other Chevy racers, but he goes down in history as one of the quickest fuel Chevy racers ever. 6.92 at Irwindale Raceway Grand Prix 8/74. |

Notes: Aquasco held an eight-car show on April 4 and Durham was there. It wasn't a good day for him. In the first round, he ran 7.81/186.32 in a loss to Tom Prock who was resetting the track record with a 6.60. After losing, he decided to come back out and make another run. Malcolm improved to 7.52, but the blower exploded and ripped the top off the Camaro. On August 15, Durham was at York's US 30 for the AHRA Nationals. He lost to Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto in the first round. Malcolm was at Bristol on August 29 for the IHRA All-American Championships. He lost to eventual winner Gary Dyer in the first round. |

Notes: Bob was at Beeline Dragway in February for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified with a 7.45 and ran a 7.51 in the first round, to beat Dick Bourgeois in the Mickey Thompson Boss 429 powered Mustang. In round two, he lost to eventual winner Dick Harrell. In late March, he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race, but he fouled against Mike Thermos in the first round. He was runner-up to Jim Dunn at an eight-car show at Lions on April 24. He had some luck on his side when in the first round, low qualifier Dale Beebe broke at the eighth mile and Bob squeaked by for the win. In the semifinals, Gary Burgin blew a motor and Bob's 7.32/174.41 advanced into the final to face Dunn. McFarland ran 7.65/159.01 in the final that lost to Jim's 6.96. Things really fell into place for him at OCIR on May 1 for the Big Four Championships. This was a 32 car show. A first-round 7.64 beat Jr. Brogdon. In the second round, his 7.59/171.75 beat Bob Hawkins off pace 8.29/132. In the third round, a 7.42/182.92 beat Mert Littlefield who shut off to an 8.56/102. In the semifinals, Randy Walls crossed the centerline and Bob's 7.70/185.95 advanced into the final. In the final, he met up with Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's "Cuda that had set Low ET and Top Speed (6.64/220.04). Rich had problems in the final and shut off just off the line and Bob got his first big win. |

Notes: Real style Corvette, just longer. Dave sez: My first Funny Car was in '72 I think. It was patterned after Jim Dunn's car with a high gear 392. Home built (literally) and ran in the high country of New Mexico, Colorado, and West Texas. I believe the best was a 7.67/191 at Amarillo. |

Notes: Henry's first NHRA national event of the year was the Cajun Nationals in Baton Rouge, and he qualified #11 at 6.777/216.91. He won his first-round with a 15-second shutoff as Mark Oswald did not show. In round two, he lost to Raymond Beadle, 6.10/250 to 9.789/86.90. Phillips was at Atco in the first week of June for the IHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, he had the car turn into a "fireball" during qualifying. The car ended up in a lake at the end of the track as the fire burnt the parachute off. He was ok, but the car was badly damaged. They must have really worked on it as he showed up at Columbus the following week for the NHRA Springnationals. He ended up as the sixth alternate with a 6.365/223.82 best. Those were Henry's best times of the year. He went to Denver and was the third alternate at 6.611/169.87. Henry burned the car to the ground at Indy '87 on a 6.964/146.43 effort. Bill witnessed this. Henry suffered second and third-degree burns on his hands and face following his engine fire during qualifying. He never rebuilt the car. Photo from Indy 1987. Notes: Dale started his national event season at Gainesville, where his 6.350/214.08 was the fifth alternate. He was the third alternate at Atlanta at 6.692/193.71. Those were Dale's only two NHRA national events. He went to Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, and the car caught fire during a 6.22 run. His fire extinguishers failed, and the car burnt to the ground. |

Notes: Adolph was at OCIR near the end of March for its final All-Pro race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he failed to qualify. He got in as an alternate, and his 8.03/177.16 beat Vic Morse in round one. In the second round, the car lost reverse after he did his burnout. Eventual winner Dave Beebe soloed for the win. Jim was back at OCIR for an eight-car show on April 18. He failed to qualify but got into the show when another car broke. The Firebird came to the line ailing in the first round, and could only run 15.25 in a loss to Beebe's 7.50. He was back at OCIR on May 2 for the Big Four Championships. In the first round, he broke and advanced Mike Van Sant. |
