Notes: Ed failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (not sure what car he was driving), where the weak 7.74 "bump" was attributed to bad track conditions. On May 3, he was at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division Six race. He was the only FC driver to show up. On May 24, only three cars showed for the NHRA Division Six race at Bremerton. Ed reset both ends of the NHRA record in qualifying with a 7.19/211.76. After an easy "bye run," he beat Kenny Goodell in the final with a 7.52/210.28. At the third NHRA Division Six race held at Mission Raceway in BC, five cars showed, and McCulloch won again. An easy 7.31 advanced in the opening round, and he got a solo in the semifinal. He faced Frank Hall driving Jerry Ruth's Camaro in the final, and Ed set Low ET and Top Speed while winning at 7.12/212.76. Shortly after that (July 25), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field at 7.11/205.46. In round one, he defeated Johnny Wright with a 7.17/205. But he fouled away a 7.26/193.46 in round two against John Lombardo. He then went to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals. Ed made runs of 7.45,7.12 and 7.19/208.60 to reach the final against Ray Alley. Ray's times were more than two-tenths off McCulloch's times throughout eliminations. Somehow, Alley stepped up to 6.99/199 in the final, but he still lost to Ed's 7.05/210.95 (Top Speed). This car's last event took place in Seattle in August for the final NHRA Division Six race. Ed's 7.33/207.84 (Top Speed) beat Kenny Martin, who broke in the opening round. But in the semifinal, the Duster's transmission failed, and he lost to Goodell. So after leaving the race with the trailer in tow, the trailer caught fire due to faulty wiring. The tow car, as well as the trailer and race car, went up in flames. | Cover and 5-page feature in 10/70 issue of Drag Racing USA. - RT

Notes: Gave the car away at Ontario 78. | Dave qualified #7 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.00/205 beat Ezra Boggs in the first round, but in the second round, his 7.08/211 lost to John Collins' 6.90/216. Times were a little more normal at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.367/226.70 qualified #10 on 2/04/78. Dave's 6.47/216 in the first round, lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.38/220. His next stop was at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was a sixteen car field and his 6.35/231.36 qualified #4. He was upset in the first round where his off-pace 7.05/228.42 lost to Gene Modlin's 7.09/195. He also lost early at the Bakersfield March Meet where his tire-smoking 6.55/217.91 lost to John Force's 6.39/212 in round one.Dave was at Fremont on April 2 for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.34/223.32, and another 6.34/223.32 beat Pat Foster in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, the "Super Shops" car broke against the eventual winner John Lombardo. Shortly after(May 13), he was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.19/229.00 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.05/235.60 in the opening round to beat Foster. But a semifinal 6.35/230.17 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.00/242. He finished runner up to Henry Harrison at Beeline Dragway's Gold Cup Funny Car series race.

Notes: Won Winston Invitational in 1992. Made history in round one at Ennis, when Mark Oswald powered to the best Funny Car speed ever, 5.163/293.06, in beating Dale Pulde. Mark also went 5.161 at Seattle and 5.188/290.79 at Maple Grove. We think he drove the Petosa Bros. car exclusively starting in Gainesville (he definitely drove it there). The team qualified well at every event but suffered terrible consistency problems on race day, leaving them first or second-round losers for most of the year. We need to confirm that he did not run the In-N-Out Cutlass at any of the other late-season NHRA events.

Notes: Clare replaced Arnie Behling as the Ramchargers driver for 1973. He started his NHRA tour as the firth alternate at Gainesville (times not available but slower than 6.75). On April 28, he was at Capitol for an eight-car show. All cars there were to run two races with the two cars with the lowest ET's meeting in the final. Sanders ran 6.54/189 in his first race, but he lost to a quick-leaving Tommy Grove, who won with a 6.56/216. In his second race, he beat Bobby Rowe's off-pace 7.33/224 with a 6.73/189. Neither of his times qualified him for the final. Clare qualified #13 at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals at 6.894/216.86. In the first round, he slowed to 7.104/213.77, which lost to Dale Emery's 6.63/209. At Bristol the following week (June 17) for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a 6.71. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. Sanders looked like a sure bet to win at Englishtown on July 4. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round, with a 6.68/215.31, and in the semifinals, his 6.88/211.26 beat the "Boston Shaker." In the final, he was up against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus" Mustang, but he broke a blower pulley and could not run, giving Arrington a solo for the win. Shortly after this, he was at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Liberman. In their first race, Sanders' 6.92/198.23 beat Jim's tire-smoking 7.30/170. In the second race, Clare got severely out of shape and shut off while Liberman legged it through at 7.19/192. With the score now even, they had their "rubber" match. Clare got the win with his 7.32/216.34 topping "Jungle's" 7.50/206. Sanders was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All cars ran the first-round, with the lowest eight ETs advancing into round two. Clare's 6.49/218.97 easily got him into round two, where he beat Jim Nicoll's 6.66/210 with a 6.58/222.77. But in the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.93/209.79 loss to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.72/201. Almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Sanders' 6.410/225.13 got him the #7 spot for the show. But in the opening round, former "Ramchargers" driver Leroy Goldstein ran 6.37/229 to beat Clare's 6.522/225.00. He reportedly also ran 6.39 and 230.17 this year in addition to a 6.34/219.73 at Lebanon Valley.

Notes: Twig started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Traction there was non-existent, and he ended up as the seventh alternate for the sixteen-car field. His next stop was at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 7.15 qualified #8 for the sixteen-car show. In the first round, Bob Pickett got crossed up against him in the "Lil Demon." But in round two, his 7.48 lost to Mike Van Sant's 7.25 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. In April, he was at Renegade Raceway in Washington for a best of three match race against Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian." The match didn't go too well as he lost three straight to the Charger. Twig qualified #1 with a 6.67 in the eight-car field at Portland International's opener. In the first round, he got some revenge on Chadderton when his 6.67/208 beat Leroy's 6.77/215. In the semifinals, Zeigler stayed consistent, running 6.68/218.44 to beat Mike Snively's 6.71/196 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. He faced Gordie Bonin in the final, and Twig had some problems and shut down to 10.53 while Bonin grabbed the victory with his strong 6.64 run. On April 29, Seattle held its annual Northwest Open race. It was a sixteen-car show, and Twig qualified #9. In the opening round of eliminations, his troubled 8.92 lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch's 6.62. Twig was back home at Portland on July 29 for the fourth NHRA Division Six race. He won the race with a 6.69/220.58 in the final over Denny Savage's 7.18/193 in the "Rat Trap." Zeigler did pretty well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He ran 6.394/230.17 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round, against Bobby Rowe and shut down to 11.81. Twig qualified #5 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 6.415/229.68. In the first round, his 6.53/222.77 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.41/226. Twig also ran 6.47 at Portland. Notes: Uyehara looked like the car to beat at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. He "only" qualified #12 for the 32 car field with a 6.66/226.13, but he picked up two tenths and ran 6.46/230.17 in the opening round of eliminations to beat John Collins' 6.72/209. That was Low ET of round one, and he also set Low ET of round two with his 6.47/220.04, taking out Larry Christopherson's 6.71/199. Unfortunately, in round three, a blown rear end slowed him to a 7.29 that lost to the eventual winner Don Schumacher, who ran 6.46/218 to advance. Dave was driving Larry Huff's car at the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.97. He lasted until the semifinals before he lost to the eventual winner Tom Hoover. Also reported to have run 6.51 somewhere.

Notes: Won IHRA Springnationals Bristol 1990. | K.C. Spurlock was at the Texas Motorplex in January making his licensing runs. He ran 5.56/223 while getting the license. He then went to Pomona and showed 'em how it's done. He qualified last with a 5.57/255.60. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier John Force. John probably thought he had K.C. covered easily, but Spurlock ran 5.32/272.14 to trailer Force's 5.42/278. In round two, a 5.37/263.00 beat Ray Sherman's 5.61/270, and in the semifinals, his 5.39/276.49 beat Bruce Larson's 5.54/267. Everyone was now looking at this guy when he faced veteran Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had run as quick as 5.27 in the first round, but his semifinal win came with only a 5.89. Spurlock's 5.78/186.64 won in the final over McCulloch, who smoked the tires and shut off. It was quite the Funny Car debut for K.C. Of course, everyone wondered if it was just a flash in the pan when the teams showed up at Firebird for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. But Spurlock continued to impress, running 5.30/276.15 for the "pole." He beat Gary Densham in the opening round before losing to Mark Oswald's 5.37/275 in round two with a quicker 5.36/276.32. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals early in March. Spurlock's 5.45/269.78 qualified #7 and an improved 5.40/277.00 in the opening round beat Jim Murphy. But an even stronger 5.34/275.48 in round two lost to Larson's 5.31/265. He made it into another final at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals at Gainesville. He qualified #3 with a 5.36/270.64, and in round one, his 5.39/266.11 advanced when Rune Fjeld shut off with tire shake. Another 5.39 at 268 beat Jim Dunn in round two, and in the semifinals, Force overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Spurlock moved on with a 5.51/259. Once again, he was up against McCulloch in an NHRA final, but this time the "Ace" came through for the win. His 5.33/267 beat Spurlock's 5.40/273 runner-up effort. Things didn't go well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.37/275.90, but he blew it after Al Hofmann fouled against him in the first round. K.C. stayed in it, got out of shape, and crossed the centerline, disqualifying himself. K.C.'s best times this year were a 5.199 low qualifying and Low ET effort at Englishtown and 282.13 at Memphis.

Notes: Beadle debuted his new Omni-bodied car on August 3 at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. He had problems getting the car to hook up and he finally ran 6.56 to get the final qualifying spot in the eight-car show. He improved, only slightly, to a 6.50 in the first round, but it was enough to beat John Pott who smoked the tires to a 7.93. In the semifinals, he fell of to a 6.79 that lost to eventual winner Paul Smith's 6.42 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." It was not a great start with the new ride. On August 17, the "Blue Max" team was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 3 race. Raymond advanced past the first-round with a 6.26/228.42 when Joe Godwin's Lincoln broke. In the semifinals, he improved to a 6.20/235.60, but lost to Billy Meyer's 6.14/204. The car performed better at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals where he qualified #1 with a 5.963/240.00. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Roy Harris' 6.28/236. A week later they were at Jackson County Sports Park for another NHRA Divisional race. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.31/226.13 behind Ed McCulloch's 6.14/226. These two worked their way into the final. Beadle started by running 6.22/230.76 over Nick Harmon and in the semifinals, set Low ET with a 6.09 while beating Dale Armstrong. In the final, he got Top Speed to go along with his Low ET when he ran 6.15/236.22 for the victory over Ed's 6.24/229. Fremont held a four-car show on a Wednesday night in September. They all made two runs with the two Low ET cars running in the final. Beadle gained his spot in the final with runs of 6.03 and 5.99 (Low ET). He was to meet Tom Ridings in the final who had run 6.05 and 6.09. Beadle also set Top Speed at 243.90, but the last race was never run due to a curfew at the track. The "Max" was strong at Seattle on September 21 for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.13/241.93 qualified #4 and in the first round, he beat Hank Johnson with a 6.19. In the second round, his 6.28/231.95 advanced when Tom McEwen broke just off the line. He picked up to a 6.01/243.90 (Top Speed) in the semifinals over Meyer which won him his second NHRA Funny Car Championship. In the final, he beat Dale Armstrong with a 6.04/243.24. Notes: A dismal year, performance and sponsor-wise. Gary started the year by qualifying #1 at the AHRA Winternationals. He lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Don Prudhomme. Gary failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and a best of 6.30 also was unable to qualify at the Gatornationals. He did make the eight-car field at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 but went up in smoke in the first round, and lost to Raymond Beadle. Gary was at Maple Grove in April for its Spring All-Pro race. It was an eight-car show, and Burgin won his first-round race over Bruce Larson with a 6.20/232.55 but fouled in the semifinals against Bob Seifert. He was back at Maple Grove in May for the Jungle Jim Memorial race. Six cars made two runs each, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gary's first race saw Dale Pulde beat him with a 6.27/229 to his 6.43/229.00. His 6.35/228.42 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" Mustang in his second race. Unfortunately, neither of his times was good enough to make the final round race. At the NHRA Springnationals, Gary had all kinds of problems and failed to qualify. He had a blower explode, and after fixing it, every other attempt to qualify had the car go up in tire smoke. It was upsetting considering that he had won this event the year before. He did much better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where a 6.015/242.58 qualified #2 behind Beadle's 5.94. Gary beat Rick Johnson in the first round, with a 6.12, but in round two, he lost to Al Segrini. He then went to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44, but another 6.44 in round one, lost to Prudhomme's 6.23. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field at the PHR Championships with a 6.15/235.60. An opening round 6.42/222 beat an out-of-shape Stan Bowman, and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.31/238.09 (Top Speed) when Billy Meyer's reverser broke after his burnout. In the final, he ran Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," and his 6.44/236.84 finished second best to Colson's 6.20/231. The following week (August 17), he stopped off at Epping, New England, for the NHRA Division 1 Final, where he qualified #1 with a 6.01/241.28 (Top Speed). He set Low ET in the first round, where his 6.01/240 beat Pulde's 6.13/223. He shut off to 8.70 in the semifinal, but that was good enough to win as Al Hanna crossed the centerline and was disqualified. This put Gary into the final against Johnson. Once again, Gary's opponent crossed the centerline, and Burgin got the victory with an 11.33/71.59. Another win came at Englishtown over an eight-car field where Gary set Low ET at 6.09. He also ran 6.26/240.64 to beat John Speelman. In the final, he met Paul Smith driving Larry Coogle's "Sting." Gary won with a 6.12 at a new track speed record of 243.90 over Paul's 6.38/194. More disappointment came at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where his best of 6.11/241.28 failed to qualify for the show. Yet, just two weeks later, he won the IHRA US Open Championships at Rockingham. There he qualified #3 with a 6.19, and in the first round, he beat Frank Oglesby with a 6.37. He set Low ET of the meet in the semifinals with a 6.07/238.72 over Pulde's 6.24. This put him against Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" car in the final. It was a close race between the two, but Gary's 6.26/237.46 prevailed over Rosberg's 6.28/239. | I've heard that Gary built this car himself at J. Ed Horton's shop? - Tim Simplot | Yes, Burgin usually ran Jaime Sartes', later built his own cars in '80-'82. - Joe Moore

Notes: Tom started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals for the second year in a row. He qualified #6 and, in the final, beat Don Prudhomme for the victory. Tom was hoping for a repeat at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but it didn't happen. He qualified #15 with a 6.200/230.76 and a 6.27/230.76 in the first round, beating Billy Meyer's 6.32. In the second round, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.32/234 to 6.92/150.25. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 at 6.201/225.56, and in round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.18/232 with a quick-leaving 6.247/229.59. In round two, he improved to a 6.126/233.76 but lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.06/227 in the "Blue Max." At the end of March, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division 4 race, but he lost to John White's 7.29/226 in the first round, with a quicker 7.09/219.51. Hoover set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Houston's third NHRA Division 4 race. There were only three FCs at the race, and Tom soloed due to his top qualifying spot and ran 6.37/225.56 to advance to the final against John White. In the final, Hoover's Corvette developed problems, and he shut down, giving White the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 6.10/236.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In round one, he ran 6.27/220.04 but lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.25/234. Hoover ran really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.20/231.95 qualified #8, and in the first round, he beat Roy Harris, 6.22/230.76 to 6.60/186. Another 6.22/227.84 in round two topped Rick Johnson's 6.25/236, while in the semifinals, his 6.30/224.43 advanced when Ed McCulloch had a header come loose and shut down. He faced Beadle in the final, and Tom smoked the tires to a runner-up finish to the "Max's" 6.09/235. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 6.51/209.80. He then went on to win by beating Dale Tuter and Henry Harrison before stopping Larry Fullerton in the final with a 6.63/212.27. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, choosing to go to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.11 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme's 5.92. But in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.89 that lost to John Collins' 6.29. He also didn't go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Things went his way at Union Grove on July 27 for the NHRA Division Three race. A 6.21 qualified #2, and he went on to win, running 6.24 in the final to beat Frank Hawley. Tom's next NHRA national event was Indy, where he qualified #3 at 6.021/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke on the burnout against McCulloch in round one. He qualified well at Seattle, hitting 6.045/230.76 for the second slot. But again, first-round troubles set in, and he shut off against Gordie Bonin in the first round. Tom's qualifying prowess continued at Ontario, as his 6.123/234.98 grabbed the #2 spot. He beat John Collins in round one, 6.173/221.13 to 6.83/188, but Raymond Beadle got him in round two, 6.13/237 to 6.32/222.27.

Notes: Tom was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 6.130/236.84. He lost to low qualifier, Kosty Ivanof in the first round, 6.130/236.22 to 6.330/235.60. He went to Bakersfield for the March Meet where he lasted until the semifinals before getting out of shape and losing to eventual winner Jim Dunn. The following week (March 16), Ridings was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #14 at 6.213/234.98 and in the first round, he got around Billy Meyer who crossed the centerline. In round two, Ron Colson got out of shape in the "Hawaiian" and shut off against him. Tom advanced with a 6.357/185.18. In the semifinals, Ridings' off-pace 6.466/180.36 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.115/207.85 in the "Blue Max.” In April, Ridings was at Fremont for the NHRA Divisional race. He qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.14/223.32, but in the first round, his sleepy 6.44/147.05 lost to Sherm Gunn's 6.72/215. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as the Fremont race was rain postponed to the same weekend. At the OCIR Divisional race on May 17, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.35/235.60. A 6.46/230.76 in the first round, narrowly lost to Jim Moore's 6.44/224. The team had a great outing at NHRA Indy. Tom qualified #4 at 6.039/243.90. He then defeated Jim Dunn in round one, 6.176/235.60 to 6.231/233.16. Round two saw Tom take out Len Imbrogno, 6.158/240.00 to 6.307/199.11, and he defeated Billy Meyer in the semis, 6.122/236.22 to 6.466/188.67. Joe and Tom were the quicker car in the final as well, but cagey Ed McCulloch got the win on a holeshot, 6.271/231.95 to 6.242/236.84. Tom qualified #7 at the Fallnationals with a 6.220/228.42. He beat a broken Sherm Gunn in round one, with a 6.050/238.72, but shut off to a 12-second loss to Don Prudhomme’s 6.080/238.09 in round 2. The team made it into a tough program for the Ontario Finals with a 15th qualifying 6.288/233.16. They lost to Roy Harris in round one, 6.376/226.13 to 6.469/226.70. Notes: Photo from Orange County. Ran 6.091/237.46 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80. | At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR, McCulloch made his debut driving the "Super Shops" car. It was quite spectacular when the car caught fire on his first pass ever and was seriously damaged. He was OK. Ed qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.14/243.90. In the first round, he got out of shape and slowed to an 8.13 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.16. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11, but again got crossed up in the first round, and his 6.83/153.06 lost to Paul Smith's 6.11/229 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.18/230.76. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.38/209.30 when alternate Dave Condit (filling in for Don Prudhomme) broke. His 6.21/226.70 beat Mike Dunn in Bill Schifsky's Mustang II in the semifinals. In the final, McCulloch ran Sherm Gunn. Gunn had problems and slowed to a 9.95/84 while Ed got the victory with a 6.12/236.84. On May 4, Ed was in Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 points race. He qualified #1 with a 6.14/236.84, but he lost in a dual tire smoker in the first round. Hank Johnson won with a 6.74 over Ed's slightly quicker 6.72. At the third Division 6 race at OCIR, Ed qualified #2 with a 6.13/225 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.03. McCulloch's 6.35/234.37 beat a tire-smoking Jim Dunn in the first round. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen. In June, the "Super Shops" team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.25/223.32 qualified #14 in the field. He beat Tripp Shumake in round one, and a 6.26/226.70 beat Dale Pulde in round two. But in the semifinals, he had a header come loose, and he shut off, giving Tom Hoover an easy ride into the final. The team failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the NHRA Summernationals, Ed lasted until the second round, where he lost to Billy Meyer. At the NHRA Division 5 race at Bonneville Raceway, McCulloch lost in the semifinals to Rob Williams. His 6.68/208 lost to Rob's 6.44/200. We formerly listed 6.04 for this car this year. Removing until we get validation. That did not occur on the NHRA national event trail, where Ed ran the 6.091 at Indy and plenty of 6.1s. His 243.90 from the Winters was his fastest speed of the year. Ed won NHRA Indy in this car. The OCIR fire happened late in '79, not sure if it was at the MM. In January '80 ND reported a 6.08 at the Fremont Opener, where Beadle ran 5.92/244. - Joe Moore

Notes: Henry didn't run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. However, he failed to reach the late rounds there. In April, Henry was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.34/231.36, but the race was rain-delayed and Harrison was unable to run the Fremont race as he went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals where he qualified #6 with a 6.12/234.98. This was a race where Don Prudhomme, Dale Pulde, and Raymond Beadle all failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, Henry lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals, Henry's best of 6.29/231.36 failed to qualify (first alternate). At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, he qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 6.69/203.17. A 6.89/196.64 beat Bill Chappelle in the first round, but in the semifinals, the Corvette lost high gear and he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. Harrison was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of June. A 6.38 qualified last in the eight-car field. He beat Gordie Bonin in a close first-round race with the "L. A. Hooker's" 6.48/216.34 defeating Bonin's 6.52/229. In the semifinals, the Corvette failed to fire and Rob Williams soloed into the finals.

Notes: Worsham qualified #14 at Columbus with a 5.37/275.56. In the opening round, his 5.42/226.98 fell to Cruz Pedregon's 5.28/276. Shortly after that (June 27), he was at Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals. Unfortunately, he ended up as the second alternate with a 5.69/250.55 best. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or any other NHRA events until the U.S. Nationals at Indy. There, his 5.288/285.89 qualified #12. He cut a good light in the first round that saw his 5.367/284.36 defeat Gordon Mineo's 5.33/276. Worsham improved to 5.257/287.63 in round two, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.17/286. Del's best numbers were 5.179/292.96 on race day at Ennis. He practically lived in the 5-teens and low 5.20s and ran near or over 290 mph everywhere. Notes: Tommy Grove was really getting his act together in '67. Near the end of the season, a supercharger was added to his SOHC motor and the car began to lay down some numbers. On October 22, he was at Fremont for the exhibition Car Championships. He made it into the semifinals before losing to Terry Hedrick. Just a week later, he was at Irwindale for the experimental Stock Invitational. He upset "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the opening round of eliminations, but he lost in round two. Grove was at Lions on November 4 for the East-West Championships. He got some payback on Hedrick in round two where he beat him with a 7.98. He faced Nicholson in the final and despite running a strong 8.10/167.59 he finished runner-up to "Dyno's" 7.97/174. At OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, Grove went up against Hedrick in his first race and Grove was late off the line. Terry's 8.23/180 held off the Mustang's quicker 8.11/185.90. Notes: Jody ran 5.86/256.84 to qualify #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He might have qualified higher, but he had a blower explosion on his last attempt. He lost to John Force in the opening round of eliminations. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 5.773/247.93 qualified #7. A off-pace 7.35/116.36 in the opening round lost to John Collins. The following week (March 24), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field but lost in round one. In April, he was one of twenty FC drivers attempting to qualify at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 5.99/246.44 qualified #13. In round one, he improved to 5.95/224.32 to beat John Force's 6.01/251. He got a little quicker in round two with a 5.92/241.41, but it wasn't enough to beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.80/249. Best NHRA national event times for 1985 were 5.773 at Gainesville and 256.84 at Pomona Winters. Did Jody run 5.68/258.62 away from the NHRA trail this year?

Notes: After a great '89 season that saw them win the NHRA Funny Car Championship, Larson and crew chief Maynard Yingst put forth another strong effort in '90. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.37/273.97 qualified #4. Bruce improved to a 5.34/277.43 in the first round to beat Al Hofmann, and a further improving 5.31/271.16 in round two stopped Scott Kalitta's 5.44/250. But in the semifinals, an off-pace 5.54/267.06 lost to K.C. Spurlock's 5.39/276. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Larson qualified #5 with a 5.34/273.14. He set a track record 5.24 in the first round, while beating Johnny West. In the second round, he ran a 5.26/272.72 solo when Glenn Mikres broke and could not run. In the semifinals, he met Mark Oswald in the "Candies & Hughes" Probe. Both drivers had problems, and Larson recovered first to win with a 6.43/147.05 over Mark's 10.97/71. In the final, he again had problems and shut off to 13.18, while Dale Pulde won a 5.37. He got into the final at the next NHRA event as well, the Supernationals at Houston. Bruce qualified #2 with a 5.30/277.69. He got lucky in round one, where his 6.63/186.11 advanced over a troubled Al Hofmann. In round two, he picked up the pace to a 5.31/265.72 to stop Spurlock's 5.34/275. Ed McCulloch smoked the tires against him in the semifinals and his 5.32/268.97 advanced into the finals. There, he ran John Force. Unfortunately, Larson smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.70-98.72, while Force won with a 5.36/272. The Gatornationals at Gainesville was the next stop on the NHRA tour. Bruce ran 5.48/271.00 to qualify #8. He beat Richard Hartman in the first round, while a strong 5.28/272 beat Mikres in round two. He got out of shape and shut off in the semifinals, losing to McCulloch's 5.44/265. At Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Larson set a track record of 280.89 in qualifying. The accompanying ET of 5.24 qualified #2. He lost a motor in the first round, but his 5.26/273 still beat Doc Halladay. After putting in a new bullet, a 5.28/269 in round two beat Jerry Caminito. But in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner McCulloch. The Mid-South Nationals at Memphis were next on the NHRA schedule. A 5.28 qualified #3 in the field. Larson lasted until the semifinals before his 5.50 lost to Oswald's 5.40. At Baton Rouge, for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #5. He beat Tim Grose in the first round before losing a blower and the race to McCulloch in round two. Tim Richards gave tuning tips. Photo from the 1990 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Notes: Al didn't start the season the way he would have liked as he failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11 with a 5.98/239.36 but lost to John Force in the first round. Atlanta held an eight-car show near the end of March, and Al qualified #1 with a 5.95 (Low ET) at 237.46. A 6.03/233 in the first round, beat Ron Correnti, and he got past the semifinals to meet Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car for the title. Al got the victory. He was back in Atlanta on April 17 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Segrini qualified #7 with a 5.96/243.90. He made his way into the final by beating Tom McEwen and John Lombardo. There he was to face Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Al ran a good 6.07/214.28, but he lost to Hawley's better 5.99/240. The next NHRA race was the Cajun Nationals held at Baton Rouge. It was another eight-car show, and Al ran 6.04/238.84 to qualify #6. An opening round 6.07/240.00 took out McEwen's 6.11/234, and in the semifinal, a 6.00/241.28 stopped Kenny Bernstein at 6.26/226. He went up against Oswald in the final, and Segrini had things in hand as his 6.11/243.90 got the victory over Mark's 6.17/241. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, the car broke on his burnout in the first round, giving his opponent, Raymond Beadle, in the "Blue Max," a free ride into the semifinal. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.97/239.36 qualified #5. In round one, Al's 6.03/241.28 beat Lombardo's 6.10/236. But he had trouble in round two and shut down against eventual winner Beadle. He made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. In the opening round of eliminations, he lost to Hawley, who ran a controversial 5.71. It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Segrini qualified #5 there with a 5.94/246.57. In round one, he ran 5.96/247.93 to beat Dale Pulde's 6.16, but a 6.11/243 in round two lost to Oswald's 5.92/249. He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His first-round 5.91/234.98 beat Dominic Santucci, but he was shut off on the line in round two with an oil leak. That advanced Prudhomme to the semifinals with a solo. The best times were 5.870 at the World Finals and 250.69 at Indy.

Notes: Denny's first time driving the Chi-Town car came on March 2 at Miami-Hollywood for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. Runner up to Gene Snow at IHRA Bristol June 1975 (6.46/224.43 bests). His 6.33/230.17 lost to Prudhomme in the semis at the PHR 131 race. Denny qualified #14 at 6.358/226.13 at Ontario, the team's only NHRA event. He beat Dave Condit in round one when Dave lost fire, hitting 6.452/199.11. Norm Wilcox did not show in round two, and Denny got a 6.660/184.80 bye run. Austin Coil really turned up the wick in the semis, and Denny ran a season-best 6.210/231.36 to defeat John Lombardo's decent 6.344/225.00. Prudhomme could not back up his amazing 5.987/241.53 numbers, but a 6.158/240.64 made Denny's 6.937/155.44 a runner-up in the final. Finished third in 1975 IHRA points (tied with Gene Snow). Notes: At the Irwindale Grand Premiere, Halloran qualified #8 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, his 6.59/221.12 lost to Jim Liberman's 6.51/207. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Mike won the OCIR Nitro Championships in July. He ran 6.36 and 6.52 on his way to the final where he met and beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang for the title. It wasn't long after that, he won again at OCIR for the PDA Championships. It was a twelve car show, and he ran a best of 6.56/222.22 (Top Speed) on the way to the final where he met with Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker." Both drivers had trouble in the final, but Mike's 8.46/171.42 got the victory over Dave's 9.07/123.

Notes: Qualified 5th at the 1975 NHRA Summernationals (Englishtown) with a 6.38/231.36 pass. Speed held up as "Top Speed of the Event." - TN | Ran a 6.32/228.42 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT | Ran 6.36/230.76 at Indy US Nationals 9/75 and 6.345/229.59 in qualifying at Ontario 10/12/75. | After driving Pete Everett’s "Lil’ Demon" for the first part of the year, Bob Pickett showed up at the Byron Manufacturer's Meet on June 15 behind the wheel of Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. It was a successful outing as all twelve cars ran round one, with the eight lowest ETs running in round two. Pickett’s 6.88/198.23 beat Shirl Greer's close 6.89/200 in the first round, and both advanced to round two. In this round, the two Low ET cars would then advance to the final. Bob faced Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems and shut down to a 7.64 loss (his first loss in eight years at this event) while Bob's 6.51/222.77 (Top Speed) was enough to reach the final against Gene Snow, who also ran a 6.51 in his win. Snow had just returned to driving after having back surgery. Both cars came to the line for the final, and the starter noticed an oil leak on Snow's car and shut him down. Pickett was signaled to run a single for the win, but he chose to shut down and wait for Snow's crew to fix the leak. After the leak was repaired, they lined up again, and they had a close race with Gene's 6.57/197 edging Bob's 6.58/175.35 for the win. He then went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where a 6.44/199 qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field behind Raymond Beadle's 6.42 in the "Blue Max." Pickett beat Jim Nicoll in the first round, before losing to Denny Savage, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The team also went to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals but failed to reach the finals. Shortly after that, Pickett was at Cayuga Dragway in Canada for the Gold Cup Championships. One thing about this car, the body was bigger than any other Funny Car competing on the track at this time, yet it constantly got Top Speed honors almost everywhere it was raced. At Cayuga, Bob’s first-round 6.59/221.67 set Top Speed while beating Bill Leavitt. He reached the finals against Beadle, but his 6.71/206.42 finished runner-up to the "Max's" 6.61/182. The car also showed its top-end horsepower in qualifying at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Pickett’s 6.38/231.36 (Top Speed) qualified the car #5. Unfortunately, he got out of shape and shut off in the opening round against Tom Prock in the "Custom Body" car. It was then off to York's US 30 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, where Pickett picked up the win with a final round 6.51 over Al Segrini's 6.89. The team was back at Englishtown for a four-car show that saw Pickett run 6.56/225 over Prock in his first race, but then the Grand Am got sideways in the second round and lost to Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford.” It was back to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals in early August. Pickett qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.51/207.37. Another 6.51 in the first round, beat Paul Smith's 6.61, but in the semifinals, he slowed down a tenth to a 6.61/218.97 that lost to eventual winner Prudhomme’s 6.59/222.

Notes: Don started the season by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.46/214.28. In the first round, an off pace 6.76/212.76 lost to John Collins' 6.51/198. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #3 on Saturday with a 6.57, but he had the Vega body come off the chassis and crash down onto the track. It broke into two pieces just behind the rear wheel well. Don and his crew repaired the body in time for eliminations on Sunday. He beat Harry Hudson, Al Segrini, and Al Bergler on his way to the final to meet Don Prudhomme. In the final, his 6.74 lost to the "Snake's" 6.38. Schumacher was running strong at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.39/225.00 and another 6.39 at 218.97 beat Leroy Goldstein's 6.69 in the first round. Unfortunately, he lost fire in the second round, giving eventual winner Tom McEwen a single into the semifinals. On April 6, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the first round, he beat Mert Littlefield with a 6.73/212.76. In round two, a 6.89/192.71 beat Gene Snow's 6.92/208. But in the semifinals, Jim Dunn's 6.83/205 beat his 6.92/209.30. He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships in April. It was a 32 car show, and Don's 6.86 in the first round beat Ron Williams' Pinto, but an off-pace 7.17 in the second round lost to Bob Pickett's 6.75 in the "Lil Demon." He qualified #2 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.43/225.00 (Top Speed). Schumacher was upset in the first round, where his 6.93/215.82 lost to eventual winner Snow's 6.67/205. Don's best NHRA times were 6.320 at Englishtown and 231.36 at Indy.
