Notes: Blown 364" (stroked 327) Chevy/hydro combo. Basically, Davis swapped the Topolino body from the Davis & Ingram BB/A for a steel Mustang coupe. Altered-style chassis with narrow rear and traverse buggy-sprung front with 12-spoke Americans contributed to unique appearance. Car received multi-page feature treatment in 10/65 issue of Cars magazine. - RT | Run through 1966, then sold to Frank Reinauer in 1967. - DD (11/18/65 Drag News) |

Notes: Gary went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the show with a 5.55/272.47. He lost to Cruz Pedregon in the opening round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.55/221.23 was the second alternate. But he got into the field when #7 qualifier Paul Smith could not race. The first two alternates were not ready, so Densham got in. Unfortunately, he lost to Chuck Beal. Only sixteen cars showed up to qualify at Gainesville, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Gary ran 5.25/284.36 to take the #14 spot. But in the opening round of eliminations, his 5.21/290.32 lost to Chuck Etchell's 5.18/294. He really stepped up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, where his career-best 5.13/293.63 qualified #4. He beat Dean Skuza in round one, with a 5.20/290.88 but his off-pace 5.38/244.43 in round two lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.12/300. Rick Howard photo from 1996 NHRA US Nats, Indy. Failed to qualify for the main show with a 17th best 5.24/292. Did qualify for Big Bud Shootout and improved to 5.05/301 in round one, but lost to Cruz Pedregon. |

Notes: Jim started the season at Pomona, where he qualified #11 with a 5.29/282.48. Another 5.29 at 288.27 advanced in round one, when his opponent, Ray Higley, broke. In round two, an off pace of 5.61/225.16 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.38/281. Epler qualified #2 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.19/290.97 behind Hofmann's 5.14. In the opening round of eliminations, his 5.26/288.73 beat Dean Skuza's 5.38/272. In the second round, Jack Wyatt fouled against him, and Jim's 5.81/180.46 advanced. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinal. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Slick 50 Nationals. Jim's 5.32/280.51 "only" qualified #11. He had a close race in the opening round that saw his 5.31/289.85 beat Tony Pedregon's 5.32/282, but he lost to the eventual winner Hofmann, in round two. The NHRA Gatornationals was not a memorable outing for Epler. He only qualified #15 with a 5.35/285.26, and he lost to Skuza in round one. He did not race at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational, but he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals held in mid-April. His 5.31/286.98 qualified #9, and in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Chuck Etchells. Shortly after that, he was at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. There he ran 5.38/287.90 to qualify #11. An easy 6.34/150.40 advanced in round one, when Whit Bazemore got out of shape and shut down, but in round two, his 5.31/288.36 fell to Etchells' 5.20/293. |

Notes: After a blower explosion earlier in the summer damaged Dale's regular ride, the red Mickey Thompson Pinto, a decision was made to bring Mickey's other car, the blue Mickey Thompson Vega, back from the West Coast. At the 1972 IHRA Summernationals (Dragway 42, West Salem, OH), Dale qualified the Vega fourteenth. He beat Gary Bolger, Al Marshall, and Fritz Callier in advancing to the final round, running a best of 6.64/221.67. In the final, he met Clare Sanders (Ramchargers Demon) and lost 6.54/229 to his 6.71/226.69. | Pulde drove Vega at AHRA Olathe, KS 8/72 and AHRA West Salem, OH 72 (RU) per Dale Pulde and Dennis Doubleday - Danny White |

Notes: Chuck didn't race at the first two NHRA events of '92, but he was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. He debuted his new sponsor, Nobody Beats the Wiz. His associate sponsors included Snap-On Tools, Mopar Performance, and Mothers. Other major sponsors included Superwinch and Kendall GT-1. At Houston, his 5.37/276.58 qualified #9 for the show. In the first round, an even better 5.26/272.47 lost to a quicker, leaving Cruz Pedregon at 5.29/252. Cruz would go on to win his first win in NHRA Funny Car competition. Etchells then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #5 with a 5.28/274.55. A first-round 5.23/281.60 beat Tom Hoover, but he again fell to a Pedregon holeshot in round two. This time Cruz's 5.21/285 stopped his 5.17/281.77. The next stop was at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and Chuck's 5.35/272.89 qualified #4. He beat Paul Smith in the opening round with a 5.37/273.05, and a semifinal 5.40/261.02 beat Freddie Neely. He faced Mark Oswald in the final, and Etchells slowed to 5.50/235.23 in a runner-up finish to Oswald's 5.33/279. NHRA's next race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.27/270.75 qualified #5 and another 5.27 at 266.35 beat a tire-smoking Jim Epler in the first round. In the second round, Oswald broke a rear end, and Etchells' 5.30/273.30 advanced. In the semifinals, eventual winner John Force ran 5.22/265 to beat his 5.31/251.53. The NHRA Mid-South Nationals at Memphis was next on the calendar, and Chuck's 5.35/274.64 qualified #7. He beat Hoover in round one, with a 5.37/275.48, but he lost to Al Hofmann in round two. At NHRA's seventh race of the season, the Springnationals at Columbus, Etchells grabbed his first pole of the year with a 5.23/279.85. He continued to look tough in the first round, where his 5.26/275.56 beat Gary Litton. In round two, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.28/271.16. But in the semifinals, he lost a close race with Hofmann. Etchells' quicker 5.26/278.89 lost to Al's 5.28/273. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where he ran 5.51/259.59 to qualify #8. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 5.93/197.32 lost to Del Worsham's 5.64/266. |

Notes: Dick Harrell, known to his many fans as Mr. Chevrolet, was forced to abandon his trusty semi-hemi and adopt Chrysler elephant power for his final season. He had stayed with Chevy through 1970, knowing he would not be able to win any major meets, just because he thought his fans expected brand loyalty. In the short 1971 season that followed, that turned out not to be a problem. The fans stayed with him. Harrell was killed on September 12/1971 on a strip in Toronto, Ontario, when a lightweight front tire came apart at over 200 mph, sending him into a utility pole. Just two days earlier at US 30 Dragstrip (Gary IN) he had participated in a benefit race to defray hospital bills for racer Larry Reyes, who was himself seriously injured in an earlier crash caused by the failure of a front tire. - RT | In July at Deer Park, Harrell set a 6.95 track record. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Dunn started his season at OCIR for its Grand Premiere race. It was an eight-car show that had all eight cars make two runs, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. He and Kenny Bernstein both got out of shape and shut off in their first race, and Mike crossed the stripe first with a 16.11. In the second race, he had to shut down again when the "Hawaiian" went up in smoke. He lost to Trip Shumake's 6.65. Mike attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.493/233.16 (fourth alternate) failed to make the show. After qualifying second, he won the Bakersfield March Meet with a 6.08/240.00 behind John Force's 6.03/237. He set Low ET in the first round while beating his dad with a 6.00/240.64 to Jim's 6.19/241. A 6.07/240.4 in the semifinal defeated Tim Grose's 6.26/223. In the final, he beat Henry Harrison with a 6.04/238.09. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 5.93/245.90. A 5.879/247.25 beat Billy Meyer in the first round, and he advanced into the semifinals when Force fouled against him in round two. But in his semifinal race, Mike's 6.06/233.76 lost to Frank Hawley's 5.94/240 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." The "Hawaiian" team was at OCIR for its 64 Funny Car race in April. There were 22 FCs, and all made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Unfortunately, his 6.05/243.24 time in his first race lost to Shumake's 5.93/233 in Joe Pisano's car, and his 6.32/230.76 over Bruce Iverson in his second race was still nowhere near quick enough to qualify for the final. The following weekend(April 9), OCIR did it again; they held another race run in the same format. Dunn still didn't reach the final, but he won both his races. A 6.27/234.37 beat Gary Densham in the first race, and his 6.24233.76 beat Mert Littlefield in the second one. He failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 6.05/243.90 best was the second alternate. Early in May, the team made a stop at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and Mike's 6.81 qualified #6. In the opening round, his 6.53/230.17 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.22/236. In mid-June, things went bad at Columbus during the running of the NHRA Springnationals. Mike had the throttle stick wide open during qualifying, and the car's supercharger exploded. The car then went up in flames, and Dunn drove into the "catch net" at around 130mph. The right rear slick had blown out and the body shredded upon impact with the net. Mike was ok, but the car was wrecked. Car owner Roland Leong immediately purchased Steve Chrisman's BB/FC Omni for racing the following week. Mike ran his best NHRA speed while qualifying at the World Finals. Unfortunately, he crashed on the run and could not compete. |

Notes: Condit was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. His 6.68/207.37 qualified #14 in the 32 car field. He improved to 6.53/213.27 in the opening round of eliminations to beat Mike Burkhart. His 6.57/216.34 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.96/205 in the "Trojan Horse" in the second round. But despite running another 6.53 at 217.91 in round three, he lost to Richard Tharp's 6.50/218 in the "Blue Max."The team failed to qualify at Pomona, but it wasn't for lack of power. The track was horrible, and a high seven-second time could get you a spot in the show. Dave qualified on the bump in Gainesville with a 6.607/215.34. He beat Harlan Thompson in round one, 6.789/187.89, when Harlan lost fire. He lost to eventual winner Pat Foster in round two, 6.36/223 to a 10-second shutoff. Dave was at Beech Bend in June for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He ran 6.78/197.80 in the qualifying round, and in the semifinal, his 6.96/206.89 beat Ron O'Donnell. He faced David Ray, driving Mike Burkhart's Vega in the final. Condit had problems and shut down to 8.28/106.37 while Ray picked up the victory with a 6.83/208. He was one of three dozen DNQs at NHRA Indy with a best attempt of 6.75/218.44. Dave was at Ontario Motor Speedway in November for the NHRA Supernationals. He qualified #14 with a 6.506/216.34, but in the first round, he got crossed-up against eventual winner Tom McEwen, and he shut down at 9.65. The best NHRA national event times were the 6.506 at Ontario and 218.44 at Indy. Dave ran 6.53 at Phoenix and 6.55/227.40 at Lebanon Valley Coke race 1973. Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.51/227. Did Dave run 6.46/231 this year? |

Notes: Roland got the sponsor, but no money ever changed hands. That is why Roland parked the car after this race. The team switched between two beautiful bodies on this car in '93: a purple one and the aqua, blue one pictured here at Columbus 1993. One half of the quickest side-by-side race in history at Houston Slick 50 Nats with John Force, Gordie 5.131, and Force 5.156. This team made its NHRA debut at the Supernationals. Car owner Roland Leong turned the wrenches over to Leonard Hughes, and he hired "240 MPH" Gordie Bonin to drive. Things started slowly when they failed to qualify at Houston, but things went much better at the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin qualified #9 with a 5.36/286.35. He improved to 5.28/281.86 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Chuck Etchells' 5.21/274. NHRA's next event was the non-points Winston Invitational at Rockingham. A 5.37/276.32 qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.42/268.01 advanced when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, Gordie had a bit more luck when Wyatt Radke broke against him, and his 5.33/237.34 advanced into the final. There he met Al Hofmann, and this time Bonin had problems and slowed to a 10.14/80.97 while Al got the victory with a 5.18/288. The team really picked up the pace at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Gordie's 5.14/286.53 qualified #3. Unfortunately, the throttle linkage broke in the first round, and his 6.58/134.60 lost to Tom Hoover's 5.72/195. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. A 5.30/282.22 qualified #5. Bonin picked up to a 5.23/279.76 in the first round to beat Jim Epler, and in round two, his 5.26/285.89 got around Etchells close 5.27/274. In the semifinals, Bonin slowed to 5.53/242.71, which lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.27/284. At Englishtown for the Mopar Parts Nationals, a great 5.08 at 285.80 qualified #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in round one, with a 5.23/277.60, but in the second round, he lost to Hoover. It had been twelve years since Bonin's last NHRA victory, but at the Springnationals, he got another. In qualifying, a 5.23/289.48 (Top Speed) had placed him #4 on the grid. A first-round 5.27/282.39 took out Gary Densham, while in round two, his 5.24/288.73 beat Hofmann's 5.25/281 in a close one. Bonin had to do a bit of driving in the semifinals as his 5.31/284.90 beat Radke's slightly quicker 5.30/278. He beat Mineo in the final with a 5.60/194.34. He almost made it two in a row when he reached the final at the next NHRA race, the Western Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 5.27/282.75. A first-round 5.40/280.46 beat Densham. He lost a blower belt in round two, and the car slowed to 6.48/144.92, but it was still enough to beat a tire-smoking Hoover who registered a 9.80 in losing. Gordie had a close semifinal race with Cruz Pedregon, where his 5.37/271.98 narrowly beat Pedregon's 5.39/268. This set up a final-round meeting with Force. This was Force's race as he qualified #1, set Low ET and Top Speed, and in the final, his 5.25/283 got the victory over Bonin's troubled, shut off 9.97/82.16. Another final round appearance came at the NHRA Mile High Nationals in Denver. Hughes tuned the car to a 5.45/259.44 in qualifying #4 in the thin air. Bonin made his way to the finals by stopping Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.52/265.33 and a second-round 5.45/273.55 beat Bruce Nilson. Etchells smoked his tires against him in the semifinals, and Bonin's 5.60/240.96 got him into the final. He faced Pedregon, and Gordie's 5.71/253.23 was no match for Cruz at 5.48/263. After all those good runs, Sonoma was a bit of a disappointment. The team qualified #8 for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.35/281.51, but Hofmann beat them in the first round. |

Notes: After not getting out of the six-second zone in '85, Scott did much better in '86. Scott qualified on the "bump spot" at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.03/235.10. In the first round, both he and opponent Johnny West smoked the tires, with Kalitta's 6.22/186.25 getting the win over West's 6.35/250. In round two, Scott advanced with a 7.35/202.06 when John Martin lost a supercharger, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the semifinals. A best of 7.01/136.76 failed to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals. Shortly after that, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.90/248.61 qualified #7. He had help from Larry Frazier at this race. In the first round, Kalitta had some trouble controlling his newly found horsepower, and the car ended up crossing the centerline in his race with Tom McEwen. He then went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he managed to qualify in the top half of the field with a 5.838/250.20 (#6). In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking McCulloch with a 5.804/252.10, but a 6.87/145.63 lost in round two against West. On June 15, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.888/246.64. He lost to low qualifier Mark Oswald in the first round. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kalitta qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A first-round 5.90/243.24 beat Della Woods' 6.24/217, but a semifinal 6.05/240.64 lost to West's 5.90/249. Near the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.903/243.50. Scott's first-round 5.924/251.81 lost to Kenny Bernstein's Low ET of the meet blast of 5.66 at 258. The following week (July 6), Scott was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but he got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to Tim Grose. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, Scott’s 5.799/251.25 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in round one. The best NHRA speed was 254.45 at NHRA Maple Grove. Did Scott run 258.52 somewhere this year? Was this a new body or car? (He ran off the end of the track at an IHRA race with the white body, tore up the front end. Probably a new body.) Notes: Higginbotham was at Green Valley Raceway on September 3. It was a day that he would never forget. He had won his first-round race with a 7.49. Everything seemed good for his second-round race. His opponent was running a Chrysler Hemi. The Chevy engines would heat up quickly, so the two competitors agreed to do two burnouts and then stage. While Mart did his two burnouts and pulled to the line. He looked over as the other driver was in the process of doing his third. Higginbotham checked his temperature gauge, and it was creeping up. He was getting frustrated as his opponent pulled to the line and did one more short burnout. By now, the engine was hot. When the two finally raced, Mart got out on him and was in the lead, but coming up to the finish line, the car exploded into a ball of fire. He couldn't see anything and reached around for the fire bottle. He didn't know if he was on or off the track, and the parachute had burned off shortly after he deployed it. He was having a tough time getting the mess stopped, and five feet from the end of the track, he finally did. Harry Schmidt was the first to get to him as he had been down at the end of the track. The ambulance arrived, and they flipped the body's remains off the chassis. Mart's arm had been badly burnt. The fire extinguisher system had been installed only three weeks before this race. He did not like to race with his fire boots as he found them too uncomfortable and bulky to use. He hadn't worn them on his first pass but had them on for the second. He also was wearing his goggles for the first time. Usually, he wore his glasses. It was a wake-up call for him as he always wore them after that. Not long after (September 6), Mart raced at LaPlace for a four-car round-robin. He was unable to get the car to run in the sevens. He lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.33/205 in the first race with an 8.01/184.42. He singled in his second race with an 8.20/157.61. In the last race, Al Vanderwoulde's 7.98/150 beat his 8.24/158.42. He ran an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20 but popped a blower in the first round and lost. He did much better the following week (September 28) at Rockingham for the AHRA US Open, where he made it to the final before losing to Gene Snow's 7.13. He got a big win at Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19. He qualified second with a 7.60 and ran an even quicker 7.56 over Paula Murphy in the first round. In the second round, a 7.72 beat John Dekker's 8.22. Snow fouled against him in the semifinals. In the final, he ran another good run of 7.57, but it wasn't needed as Connie Kalitta broke, giving Mart his first big victory. Sid Foster met Mart at Carlisle ark for a best two out of three match race. A 7.97/193.20 lost to Sid's 7.92/198 in the first race, but he picked it up to a 7.33/193 in the second race to beat Foster's 7.51/199. In the tiebreaker, Mart broke a rear end on the burnout letting Foster single for the match race win. He was the quickest qualifier (7.30) at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on November 7. The actual race was postponed by rain until November 16. In his first race, a 7.95/195.65 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.74/161. In his second race, he did his burnout and found that he had no reverse. That let Gene Snow run a 7.54/194 solo pass. Mart got it all together for his last race, beating Bob Bedell with a 7.64. Mart won at Irwindale on November 23 over a 32-car field. He ran 7.54/187.50 over Della Woods (8.44/174), an 8.68 over a blowing-up Paul Gordon, a 7.60/176.81 over Jess Tyree (8.23/182), and a 7.73/187.10 in the semifinals beat Fred Goeske's 7.81/184 Road Runner. In the final, he defeated Dave Beebe for the victory. - RH | BBC/TorqueFlite/Hardy combo. Featured in 1/71 issue of Super Stock & Funny Car. - RT | Ran 7.35 at Rockingham. |

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and Paul Shedlik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 MPH funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph while at the same time rumored to be experimenting with an exotic fuel (hydrazine?) | Grove had a bad year in '69. At least in comparison to '68 and '70. He had lots of transmission problems and was also trying to sort out the Boss 429 as well as running the proven SOHC. He failed to qualify at both the Irwindale New Year's Day Race and the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9 where an 8.08 was only good for the eighth alternate. He also failed to qualify at Bakersfield for the March Meet. Grove was the Killer Car on the match race trail in '68 and was feared by everyone who matched against him, but '69 was not the same. On March 30, he was at Aquasco for a best of three match against Lew Arrington. He won the first race with a shut off 8.61/168.22 when Lew got out of shape, but in the second race while coming to the line, it looked like a blower let go, but it was actually his motor self-destructing. Lew soloed in the "Brutus" to two more wins for the match race win. He ran Fred Goeske at Capitol on April 12 and lost two straight even though he set Top Speed at 195. He ran better at Aquasco on May 4 for their fourth annual Funny Car Invitational. A first-round 7.91/191.08 beat Tom McEwen's off pace 8.23 and another 7.91/191.88 in the semis advanced over Frank Oglesby in the Don Nicholson Cougar. In the final, Tom fouled against Jim Liberman's 7.86/189. On May 27, Aquasco held another eight-car Funny Car race. Grove's 8.10/188.66 in the first round, lost to Leonard Hughes' 7.83/197. After his loss, Tommy came back out later and made two runs, an 8.12/189.86 and an 8.09/191.88. Liberman met Grove at York US 30 on June 7 for another match race and JJ beat Grove three straight races. On June 21, Grove was at Lakeland for the Memphis Funny Car Championships. He fouled against Dick Harrell in the first round, and shut down to an 8.81/165. He had some more bad luck the next day at Kingston when he lost a best of three match to Paula Murphy. On July 3, Edgewater held an eight-car Funny Car show. Unfortunately, Charlie Allen strapped a 7.37 Low ET of the meet run on Tom in the first round, putting the Mustang on the trailer. He also lost in the first round, at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car event on July 16. This time, Oglesby's 7.98/178 beat Tom's ailing 8.71/187.88. He ran much better at the Cars Magazine Meet on July 20 where he set a 7.42 track record at 201 in the first round, while beating Al Graeber. In round two a 7.74/197.36 beat Ron Rivero's out-of-shape pass. But then the rain came and the rest of the race was to be run on Sunday. Grove had prior commitments and could not run Sunday. Liberman had a rematch with Grove at Capitol on September 20 and once again JJ prevailed although the times were close. Jim ran a best of 7.28/199.10 to Grove's 7.29/203. The following day (September 21) he ran at the third annual New England Funny Car Championships where he set a 7.30 Epping track record in the first round, while losing to Roger Lindamood's 7.33/198. Tom's speed was 199.50. An interesting thing happened to Grove on October 11 when he showed up to run at the OCIR Funny Car Invitational. He was informed that his competition license had expired back in Jan and he was unable to run. After straightening out the drivers license issue, he showed up at Irwindale on October 18 for the East/West Championships, but lost to Liberman's 7.76/195 in the first round, with an out-of-shape 8.23. All cars had run the first-round with the losers going into a bracket two while the winners ran bracket one. So Tom then met Rich Siroonian in bracket two, but his 8.02/184.80 lost to Rich's 7.53/199. He competed at Sears Point on November 2, but lost a blower early in the race. - Ron Howard |

Notes: After driving for Mickey Thompson for several seasons, Pickett went on his own in 1979. Bob was at the AHRA Winternationals but failed to reach the finals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #6 at 6.229/233.16, but he broke against Tom Prock in the first round. At the Gatornationals, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot at 6.330/229.59, meaning he had to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme in the first round. Sure enough, the "Snake" beat him, 6.44/228 to 6.650/221.13. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, he qualified #7 in the eight-car show with a 6.40/233.76. A 6.55/222.77 lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.36/234 in round one. Bob qualified #11 at Columbus at 6.27/228.42 and lost to Tom Hoover in round one, 6.33/231 to 14.59/50. Bob qualified #13 at Englishtown at 6.25/232.55 and again had issues in round one, falling to Jim Adolph, 6.28/231 to 11.86. Bob qualified on the bump at Indy at 6.130/230.76, but round one blues set in again, and Pat Foster took a 6.25/235 to 11.22/72 decision. Bob was the fifth alternate at the Ontario Finals (no time reported, but no quicker than 6.56). |

Notes: Teal qualified ninth at the NHRA Springnationals with an 8.13/200.44. That put him against Danny Ongais in the first round, and an 8.34/202.24 lost to the Mustang's 7.77/173. He ran a best-of-three-match race against Terry Hedrick in the "Seaton Shaker" Rat-powered Nova on July 13. He ran well but lost three straight. In the first race, Hedrick got him with a track record 7.49 at 197 to Teal's 7.73/196.50. The second race was a close contest, with the Nova's 7.59/196 just beating the Charger's 7.60 at a track record 201.78. Bryan again reset the track speed record in the final race with a 7.62/203.60 that lost to Terry's 7.56/197. On July 20, Continental Divide Raceway hosted the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships. Bryan ran well in the thin air, hitting a first-round 8.49/160.42 over Jack Bradley's Camaro. A semifinal, Low ET at 8.26 at a track-record 181.80 beat Ron Leslie, who lost a transmission. But the final was called due to rain. Martin, Mich held an eight-car show on August 30, and Bryan ran well. He advanced past the first-round with an 8.12/138.46 when Terry Hedrick fouled away a 7.42/197. In the semifinal, an 8.58/159.57 advanced when Pete Gates fouled. In the final, a 7.81/195 by Gary Bolger left Teal the runner-up money. |

Notes: This was the '69 Charger of Nelson Carter (Super Chief). The car remained intact except for a change in the paint job, lettering, and graphics. Verified by Steve Condit. The team bought the car from Nelson Carter in 1970. They picked the car up from the Native American reservation in Oklahoma in early 1970. - Tommy Naccarato | Car debuted in mid-1970 with aerodynamic '69 Charger 500 skin. Early hemi by Keith Black with TorqueFlite/Logghe combo, per 3-page feature in 10/70 Drag Racing USA. - RT | Dave was at OCIR for the second annual March of Dimes race on June 20. He lost fire in the first round, against Ed Lenarth. He was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships. Condit advanced past the first-round when Don Cook's Corvette broke, but in round two, the "L. A. Hooker" could only produce an ailing 12.19/63.87 that lost to Arnie Behling in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. The following day (July 4), he was at Irwindale's Fourth of July Championships. Unfortunately, he lost fire in the first round, against Gene Conway. He was back at Irwindale on July 17 for a sixteen-car show. He qualified #5 with a 7.91/188.28, but an off pace 8.20 in the first round, lost to John Lombardo's 7.77. Condit was at Lions on August 22 for an eight-car show. His opening round 7.47/195.22 lost to Ed Lenarth's 7.46/176. Dave came back out after being eliminated for a "grudge race" against the "King Camaro." He won the race with a slightly quicker 7.46/190.67. The "L. A." bunch was at Irwindale's Labor Day Championships, but Dave fouled (13.07/56.57) in the first round, against John Lombardo. | Originally listed 7.10/210 ET and speed need to be confirmed. We do have a confirmed 7.37 from Lions 1970 and the 188.28 from Irwindale 7/17/70. |

Notes: "Jungle Jim" had a pretty good season in '73. His new Vega had been running well. He went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.58/214.79 to qualify #5 in the 32 car field. That was impressive considering there were 75 funny cars at the meet. He didn't just qualify well, he ran well in eliminations as well. An opening round 6.49/225.00 beat Frank Huff's 6.93/212 in the "King Cobra" and in round two his quick-leaving 6.60/211.76 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.59/217. Jim had another close race in round three that saw his 6.57/221.13 beat Mart Higginbotham's 6.62/218. His easiest run on his way to the final came in the semifinals where Jim Paoli smoked the tires against him. Liberman advanced with a 6.61/212.76. He faced Don Schumacher in the final and the "Shoe" had the edge. He had been running quicker and quicker in every round. His semifinal win came with a 6.42. Sure enough, Jim tried to get the power to the ground in the final and smoked the tires while Schumacher ran 6.44/220 or the win. Jim then went to Miami-Hollywood for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show and Jim once again qualified #5, this time with a 6.86. He improved to 6.65/220.58 in the first round, to beat Pee Wee Wallace and in round two he beat Paul Smith in the "Fireball Vega", but Jim wounded his engine on the run and was unable to make it back for the semifinals. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona was a mess. The track was horrible and it was rained out twice. Still, even with the tricky track conditions that kept a lot of strong teams from qualifying, Jim showed that he knew how to "read" the track and managed to qualify #14. Unfortunately, with the rain delay, Jim was unable to stay for eliminations and alternate Tom McEwen took his place in the field. He was back at Miami for its Winter Funny Car Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.86 behind Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." He never ran that slow again during eliminations. He opened with a 6.72/197.80 to beat Al Marshall's 6.91/210 in the "Tyrant." Liberman had to race Marshall again in the semifinals when he got back in on the "break rule" and the results were the same. Jim’s 6.78/207.37 beat Al's 6.82/209. This put Jim in the final against Tharp. It was a close race, but JJ set Low ET and Top Speed in winning with a 6.65/216.80 over Tharp's 6.70/215. He then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 with a 6.74/209.30. He dropped his ET by over two tenths in the first round, when he ran 6.50 to advance over a fouling Paul Radici. He took an easy second round win and then lost to Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega in the semifinals. Jim’s 6.90/212.26 lost to Kelly's motor-blowing 6.88. Brown was unable to return to run in the final so Liberman was reinstated. It was a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, right down to the winner. Schumacher’s 6.55/215 beat JJ's 6.81/216.86 for the victory. In April he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He had a bit of luck in the first round, where his smoky 7.74/130.81 advanced when his competition, Harlan Thompson, had his transmission stick in low gear. After that, Jim ran strong. He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.44/215.31 that beat Al Segrini. In the final, he faced Jake Crimmins driving the "Swensen & Lani" Mustang. Liberman picked up the win with a 6.48/215.31 over Jake's 7.03/167. On April 28, he was at Capitol, where although he failed to reach the final, he was one of four cars that ran 6.5's. The next day he won at Atco. He then won an Funny Car show at Aquasco in early May before going to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field and in the first round, he beat McEwen's 6.94 with a 6.82. A second round 6.70/205 advanced when Jim Nicoll broke and he shot to a 6.64/214.28 in the semifinals to beat Dean LaPole's Chevy powered car at 6.81. This put him into the final against Gene Snow. Gene had trouble and slowed to 14.11 while JJ picked up yet another win with a 6.86/200.44. Another win came in June over a sixteen-car field at Connecticut. There Jim ran his old friend Lew Arrington in the final. Jim was running too strong for Arrington on this day as JJ set Low ET in the final with a 6.59/213.27 that easily covered "Brutus" at 7.00/205. Liberman didn't fare so well at a best of three match race against Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega at Englishtown. In their first race Foster's 6.27/226 beat Jim's 6.55/220.58. In the second race, JJ's throttle linkage broke and he shut down on the line. No ET's were recorded in their third race, but Foster led them through at 227 while Jim crossed the line second at 218.44. It was a minor setback as then Jim went to Cayuga for the Canadian All-Pro Championships where he beat Bobby Rowe in the final with a 6.95/200.89. He lost early on July 4 at an eight-car show at Englishtown where Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" Demon beat him in the first round. He was back at Englishtown a couple of weeks later for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.59, but a first-round 6.84/210 lost to Foster's 6.66/208. In Nov, Jim set Atco record at 6.45. |

Notes: Grove showed up at Beeline with his still unfinished Mustang for the AHRA Winternationals. He ran 6.91/202.24 to qualify #29 in the 32 car field, but an opening round 7.05/196.50 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.49/220. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the eleventh alternate. He also could not qualify for the sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ended up as the first alternate. Jim Adolph qualified, but his car broke, and he was unable to run in eliminations, so Grove got into the field. Mert Littlefield shut down early into his run in the opening round, and Tommy advanced with a 7.69. In round two, his 7.56 lost to Dave Uyehara's 7.18 in Larry Huff's car. On April 28, he was a Capitol for an eight-car show that had all the cars run two rounds of racing, with the two Low ET's cars meeting in the final. Grove's 6.56/216 defeated Clare Sanders' quicker 6.54/189 in the "Ramchargers" car in his first race. In his second race, he faced Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max. Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand, and he backed out of it while Tharp ran 6.62/195 to win. Grove ran really well at the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway in May. It was a sixteen-car show, and Grove made it into the semifinal where Jim Nicoll fouled against him. Unfortunately, Grove hurt some valvetrain parts and repaired them for his final round showdown with Don Prudhomme. Those repairs did not work out as the car failed to fire for the final, and Tom had to watch as the "Snake" made an easy solo for the win. He qualified #12 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he damaged his engine and could not compete in eliminations. Near the end of June, he went to US 13, Delmar, for a best-of-three-match race against Shirley Muldowney. He won all three of their races, running a best of 7.09/202.24. In July, he was in New England for a sixteen-car show. The car got out of shape in the first round, and the rear almost hit the guardrail. After he straightened it out, he took off in hot pursuit of Dale Pulde, who was running 7.03/172 in the other lane. Grove lost with an 8.61/202. He came back out later for a consolation race with Fred Goeske. Fred broke in their race, and Grove ran 6.82/207. Grove was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56 qualified #8. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.79 lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.50. Grove ended his '73 season at Beeline for its sixth annual Funny Car Nationals held on December 2. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.78/213.76 qualified #4. He improved to 6.68 as just 192.30 in the opening round to beat Roger Garten's 7.28/156 in the "Warhorse." But an even better 6.65/217.38 fell to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.53/210 in the second round. Several DNQs at NHRA national events with best times of 6.888/211.76 in qualifying #12 at Columbus. We remember the 6.42/227 but need to validate track and year. |

Notes: Phillips and Shores spent $35,000 to build this car. It used a 118" Logghe chassis, and the engine was a 426 Hemi built by Ed Pink. It used a half-inch Moldex stroker crank as well as M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons. Crower supplied the cam. The blower drive and manifold were from Cragar, and Marc Danekas prepared the GMC 6/71. The 87% nitro mix was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. A Lenco two-speed transmitted the power back to a Dana rear with 3.90 gears. The Vega body came from J&E Fiberglass. | Early in the season, Paul Smith drove this car before moving into the seat of the "Sir Wells" car. After that, Tom Crevasse jumped behind the wheel. To say that the car ran well was an understatement. He won the Warner Robins National Open in May. Tom had a close first-round race where both he and Frank Oglesby ran 6.81, but the "Fireball Vega" got the win. Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" broke in the semifinals, and Tom ran an easy single. In the final, he faced Smith. Tom was up to the task, running Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.61/218.44 while Smith slowed to 8.72/86.77 after losing his blower belt. Things didn't go too well at the NHRA Springnationals. The car went into a ball of flame during qualifying. Tom was OK, but the car was badly damaged. Atlanta held a 14 car show later in the month, and Crevasse was there. He soloed in the first round, when Ed O'Brien had a leak on the line. But shortly after that, it rained, and the race was canceled. On July 29, he was at Tri-City Dragway for the fourth NHRA Division Three race. In the first round, he defeated Steve Tansy with a 6.75/212.76, but his late 6.68/219.51 in the semifinal lost to Dale Emery's 6.74/218. Tom did not race at Indy for the NHRA Nationals; instead, he was at Connecticut for its East Coast Mini-Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and he lost to Lew Arrington in the opening round. Shortly after that, Crevasse raced at another eight-car show at Atco. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.56/225.00 that beat a tire-smoking, Pete Hill. In the semifinal, a 6.59/217.91 beat Roy Harris in the "Frantic Ford." He faced Arrington in the final. But there was a major screw-up, as the light went green as soon as Arrington staged. Crevasse had not even had a chance to stage the "Fireball Vega." The two drivers split the purse. Tom won the final NHRA Division One race at Atco on September 15. In the opening round, his 6.65/221.13 beat Dave Condit's 6.98/192 in the "LA Hooker." He set Low ET and Top Speed in the semifinal, where his 6.48/227.27 beat Arnie Swensen's Mustang. He faced Charlie Therwhanger, who was driving Mike Burkhart's Vega in the final. Tom's 6.59/223 got the win. The following day, he was at New England Dragway for its Funny Car Nationals. This was a 32 car show, and after winning the first-round easily, his 6.54 in round two lost to Pee Wee Wallace's 6.55. Shortly after that, Tom was at Suffolk for the Dixie Classic. In round one, his 6.69/216 defeated Joe Jacono's 6.99/202. In round two, his 6.64/215 lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.55/201. |

Notes: Tripp qualified #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.427/268.09. In the first round, he had a blower explode. The car caught fire, and Shumake fought for control, crossing the centerline before bringing it back into his own lane and hitting the guardrail. He got the car stopped, and he was OK. By the time the IHRA Winternationals rolled around in March, the car was fixed. Tripp qualified for the eight-car show and ran 5.56/258.62 in the first round, to beat a tire-smoking Brad Tuttle. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.44/269.46 when Ed McCulloch broke on the line. In the final, he faced low qualifier, John Force. John fouled, and Tripp took the victory by idling to an 11.10 for the win. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.501/264.62 qualified #7. In the first round, he lost to R.C. Sherman, 5.83/250 to 6.024/237.65. That was Tripp's last NHRA national event this year. A week later (March 27), he was at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. A first-round 5.69 lost to Force's 5.64. Photo from Milan, MI, 1988, with Pulde driving. Did Tripp run 5.405 in this car? Formerly listed that time but removed it until we get confirmation. |

Notes: Tom was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.53 and had an easy first-round win. In the second round, both he and opponent Gene Snow had difficulties getting traction, and Hoover's 6.92 got the win over Snow's 7.13. In the semifinals, Hoover's "Showtime" once again smoked the times, and this time, his 7.52 lost to eventual winner Mike Van Sant's 6.82 in the "Invader." Tom did not race at the NHRA Phoenix Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. There, he qualified #9 with a 6.300/211.26. But again, he went up in smoke, and his opening round 8.187/104.04 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.062/219.51. Tom then went to Gainesville in March for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.444/214.79 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 6.47/209.30 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.57/207.37. He lost to Bob Pickett's 6.65/221.13 in round two with a 6.74/220.04. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Bob Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Later in April, Hoover was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show Me Nationals. He reached the final at that event by stopping Wilfred Boutilier in the first round with a 6.41. A 6.39 in round two took out Dick Custy, and a 6.35 in the semifinals beat Tom McEwen. He faced Snow in the final. Snow had been running just a little quicker throughout eliminations with a 6.26 best, but the race never came off as Hoover lost oil pressure and shut off, giving Gene a solo for the victory. In May, he was in Tulsa for the AHRA Okie Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.81 and lasted until round two, where Dale Emery's 6.65/208 beat his 6.71/217.88. Later in the month, he was runner-up to Snow again at the AHRA Grandnationals at Detroit Dragway. He grabbed a victory at St. Louis on June 6 for the AHRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his opening round 6.65/217.40 advanced over Jerry Messer's broken Mustang II at 14.24. In the semifinals, his 6.73/210.86 beat Emery, who smoked the tires. For the third time that season, Hoover would face Snow in the final. Once again, Gene had been running quicker during eliminations with a 6.56 best. But this time, Snow overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover ran his best, a 6.53/209.86, to pick up the win. The following week (June 13), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.635/207.85. He lost a close race against Gary Burgin in the first round, with his 6.604/218.97 falling to Burgin's 6.591/214.79. He was still driving the Vega in July at the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley Raceway. He was quick off the line in his first-round race with Custy as Tom's 6.24 beat Dick's slightly quicker 6.23. He lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.19 lost to Tom Prock's 6.09. Tom's 5.999/232.55 times were among several questionable numbers recorded at Green Valley Race City events. Tom came out with a new Monza at Martin, Michigan, in mid-August for the PHR Championships and raced it throughout the end of the season. | Former Don Prudhomme Vega that Tom Hoover ran from Spring 1974 through mid-Summer 1976 with three different paint schemes. Notes: In my opinion, this was Henry Harrison's best year behind the wheel of an FC. Before this, his biggest claim to fame had been his booting Mickey Thompson's Mustang to a 6.54/226 to take Low ET at the '71 NHRA US Nationals. Having Amos Satterlee as his crew chief didn't hurt either. Ten years earlier, Amos had put a blower on Eddie Schartman's SOHC-powered Comet and made him the most feared Funny Car at the end of the '67 season. While it was no longer a SOHC, he still knew how to make a KB run. Henry's season started at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he ran 6.79 to qualify #4 for the sixteen-car field. Traction was poor at the meet, and in the first round, he lost to Jack Maroney's 7.65/189 with a 7.69/146. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was another sixteen-car show, and his 6.45 qualified #6. His 6.48/226.70 beat Wayne Stoeckel in the opening round of eliminations. But in round two, the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.56/204, beat his 6.85/225.56. He competed at the Bakersfield March Meet, but a 6.65/220.58 lost to Bryan Raines' 6.61/218 in the first round. On April 2, Harrison was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.44/226.70. In the opening round, his 6.40/226.70 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.32/215. In May, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was a tough show as his 6.34 qualified on the "bump." But he improved to 6.29/229.59 to beat Tom McEwen's sleepy 6.07/217 in round one. In the semifinals, Dave Condit's 6.70/181 in the "L. A. Hooker" lost to Henry's 6.26/225.00. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the "Snake's" 6.04/242 got the victory over his 6.37/229.00. Things went better on June 10 at OCIR's Funny Car Spectacular. He beat Russell Long, driving the "Sundance" Arrow in round one. A second-round 6.22 (Low ET) at 223.32 sent Jim Adolph packing for home. Henry got a solo in the semifinals when Gary Densham broke, and he ran 6.43/214 to advance. In the final, he faced Pat Foster, who was driving for Joe Pisano. Pat had problems and shut down to 12.03 while Henry won another 6.22 at 226. He was at Sacramento for the third NHRA Division Seven race. He set Low ET in qualifying for the eight-car show with a 6.26/224.44. He opened eliminations with a 6.41/224.44 to stop Densham at 6.54/207. Henry got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals as only six cars had shown. He advanced with a 6.33/227.85. He went up against Dave Hough, driving the "Super Shops" Arrow in the final. Dave got the victory with a 6.27/229, while Harrison's motor-blowing 6.40/214.29 got him the runner-up spot. Harrison won the fourth NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville Raceway. He set Low ET at 6.52 but only needed a 7.19/219.52 in the final to win as Foster lost a blower belt. On July 29, he qualified #3 at the PDA Championships held at OCIR with a 6.32. He made it into the final before losing to future superstar John Force. He was also runner-up at Beeline's Gold Cup Funny Car race. There it was Tripp Shumake who stopped him in the final. | 1978 D7 Champs.
