Notes: Mike qualified #5 at Pomona with a 6.15/234.98. and in round one, he beat Gary Burgin's 6.47/229 with a 6.21/236.22. In round two, he was on the receiving end of Raymond Beadle's track record 5.93 in the "Blue Max." Mike lost with a 6.38/231.95. The team did not go to Bakersfield for the March Meet, choosing to run at Sacramento instead. Mike really opened some eyes when the car made a tire hazing 5.84 pass. This was the quickest time ever for a flopper, and it backed up the run Mike's dad, Jim, made in January at OCIR when Jim had driven the "Hawaiian" to a 5.85 while covering for his son behind the wheel. Mike's next pass at Sacramento was 6.11. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.10/231.95. His first-round 6.064/233.76 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/238. The team did not compete at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, and all the Funny Car teams boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals that year. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.12/229.00 qualified #4. In the opening round, he slowed to an off-pace 6.41 that lost to Tom Anderson's 6.31. Mike qualified #6 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.02/243.24. Roy Harris smoked the tires against him in round one, and he advanced with a 6.04/241.28. In the second round, both he and Beadle smoked the tires hard, and Mike recovered first to win with a 6.56/231.95. Dunn blazed the tires again in the semifinal and shut off to a 9.48/79 loss against Dale Armstrong's 6.18/231. Shortly after that, he won the Byron Manufacturer's Meet, where his 6.28/227.28 stopped Burgin's 6.36/228 in the final. Yet another win followed at Brainerd Raceway for the fifth NHRA Western Regional. Mike qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/233.76. In the opening round, he then improved to 6.23/234.98 to defeat Glenn Mikres in the "Bear Town Shaker." In the semifinal, a consistent 6.24/236.84 covered Tom Hoover's 6.75/222. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and Pickett had troubles and shut down while Dunn ran 6.50/234.37 for the victory. Martin, Michigan, held its U.S. 131 Funny Car Championships that had all cars make two runs and the two quickest cars meeting in the final. The "Hawaiian" was strong, running 6.12/238.72 (Top Speed) to beat Frank Hawley's 6.13/220 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the second race, Mike set Low ET with a 6.09/236.22 over Mikres. He ran Hawley again in the final, but the "Hawaiian" broke and slowed to an 11.00 in a runner-up effort to Hawley's 6.15/216. Mike won the Golden Gate Nationals. His best NHRA times were 5.933 at Indy and 243.24 at the Summernationals.

Notes: Randy raced at three events in 1999 with great success at the Joliet event. He also may have run the family funny car at some of these. We need to validate. Randy was the third alternate at the Winternationals at 5.730/257.33. He qualified #16 at Phoenix at 5.382/266.69 and lost to John Force in round one, 4.98/301 to 5.123/294.56. He qualified #5 at Joliet (definitely in the Gibbs car) at 4.986/306.53. In round one, he beat ron Capps, 5.014/295.34 to 5.18/282. Randy took out Del Worsham in round two, 4.988/286.07 to 5.39/203. He had a thrilling race with John Force in the semis, but he lost a close 5.003/298 to 5.006/292.84 decision to the champ. That was Randy's last national event of the year.

Notes: The T-Bird debuted at the Grandnationals in Sanair at the end of June. Only fifteen cars showed, and Ron's 5.82/252.38 qualified #7. In the opening round, he had problems and shut off against Mark Oswald. The following week, he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The car was still unlettered and wearing black primer. He qualified #14 and ran an easy 5.97/249.30 in the first round to advance when Kenny Bernstein could not show due to a fire he had in qualifying. In the second round, Ron lost to Tom McEwen. At the NHRA Summernationals, Correnti qualified #13 with a 5.81. He had problems in the first round against Dale Pulde and shut off. His next stop was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Ron qualified #13 with a 6.13/241.93 in the thin air. In the first round, he lost to Rick Johnson in the "Hawaiian." This car's career ended at Edgewater during the IHRA Summernationals in August. It caught fire during qualifying, and the T-Bird body was destroyed. Ron was not hurt. IHRA number was 154. We formerly listed 5.71 for this car, but 5.779/253.52 were his best NHRA national event times at the World Finals. We are removing the 5.71 until we get confirmation.

Notes: Lombardo took out top end blocks on Thursday, damaged left side of body, repaired and white primered. Car went back to all blue, unsponsored in '86. | John qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.09/234.98. A much improved 5.82/243.90 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.73/247. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.89/240.51 qualified #10. Unfortunately, in the first round, Lombardo smoked the tires and shut off against Mark Oswald. John made it past the first-round at the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/244.16 meaning that he would face low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in round one. He got around Bernstein and also beat recent Winternationals winner Grose with a 5.93/244.16. In the semifinals, he broke a transmission and advanced Ed McCulloch into the finals. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway, Baton Rouge. A 5.95/222.49 got the spot. This time both he and John Force smoked the tires in their first-round race and Force's 6.07/237 came out on top over the "Blue Max's" 6.32/244.56. | At the NHRA US Nationals John qualified #5 with a 5.741/254.16. He would face #13 Qualifier Jim White in round 1 where Lombardo smoked the tires & watched White take the win.

Notes: Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. - RT | Steve started the season with a Chevy motor (see the other 1968 entry), but he jumped behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's Charger for a while. It was only for a short time as Dave Beebe later took over. But Steve really noticed the power difference between his Chevy and the Keith Black Hemi the Charger ran. Soon after, the Chevy was gone from the Camaro, and a Hemi resided in its place. On June 22, he showed up at OCIR with Barry McGowen's Keith Black Hemi neatly tucked into the Camaro's chassis. Bovan was there for the Funny Car vs. Fuel Altereds race. He beat Sush Matsubara and Randy Bradford in the first two rounds with a best of 8.03/184.80. Due to breakage, he lined up against Charlie Allen in the third round. Steve fouled, but he still proved the power of his new Hemi as he set Top Speed of the day with an 8.03/187.10. He was at Lions on June 29 with the now Hemi-powered car. Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang broke in the first round, so Bovan soloed at 8.29/184.74. In the semifinal, he had transmission issues and lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman. The following week (July 3), he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He fouled against Charlie Allen in the opening round, but he came back out for a couple of consolation races. In one of the races, his 8.25/185.58 beat Ray Alley who broke, and in his other consolation race, he shut off against Gene Modlin in Gene Conway's Firebird. He also ran a best of three best against the "Freight Train" driven by Bob Muravez at this race. In their first race, the Camaro blew its transmission. After Steve replaced it, Steve ran a great 7.63/194.38 beat he lost to Bob's 7.69/196. | Steve ran 8.28/187.10 at OCIR Funny Car Meet in late 1968 (Cars Magazine, January 1969). - Danny White

Notes: Prudhomme started the year with his venerable Arrow but debuted this Plymouth Horizon in April at OCIR for the 64 car show. In the opening round, Don ran a track record 5.96 at 238 to beat John Force. He made it into the final against Ron Colson, driving the "Hawaiian." The "Snake" got crossed up and shut off while Colson ran 6.48 for the win. On April 20, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.94/238.72, but rain interrupted the race, and Don could not run on the rain date since he chose to go to Baton Rouge instead for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He would've been better off at Fremont since his best of 6.21/235.60 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Baton Rouge. On May 17, he was at OCIR for the third NHRA Division 6 race. Once again, he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.03/238.09. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.18. He then went to Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. Prudhomme ran well, hitting a 6.04 in the semifinals over Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler," and in the final, he set Low ET with a 5.97 at 235.60 over Colson's 6.70/229. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.21/231.95 qualified #9 and set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Colson. Don improved to 6.08/222.77 to beat the "Hawaiian's" 6.20/237. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line with an oil leak in round two, advancing Billy Meyer into the semifinals. He did not compete at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, choosing to run the AHRA Nationals at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas instead. Don qualified #1 with a questionable 5.92. He then ran 6.19 and 6.28 over Kenny Bernstein and Tom McEwen to reach the final, where he faced John Collins. A final 6.18/229 gave him the victory over an up-in-smoke Collins at 7.24. He was back on the NHRA tour for the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown in July. Don qualified #3 with a 6.02/237.46. An opening round 5.99/240.64 beat Bernstein, and he made an easy single in the second round when Dale Pulde was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. Prudhomme faced Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max" in the semifinals, and Don's 6.05 beat the "Max's" ailing 6.85. Once again, he found himself in the final. There he faced and beat Meyer's 6.58/192 with a 6.10/238.05. Prudhomme was back at Union Grove in July for the NHRA Division 3 race. While he didn't reach the final, he did set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.15. Another win came at the AHRA Grandnationals at Dragway 42. This time, the "Snake" really had to work for it. He qualified #2 with a 6.20 behind Pulde's 6.12 in the "War Eagle." A first-round 6.23 beat Gary Burgin's 6.44, and in the semifinals, he soloed when Len Imbrogno could not show. The final came down to Pulde and Prudhomme. Don got the win with a 6.26, stopping Pulde's out-of-shape run. August started with Prudhomme winning the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City. The "Snake" did not have the quickest car (Tom Hoover did at 6.05), but he was the most consistent, running 6.15 and 6.14 (at 232.55) to reach the final. There, he faced Billy Graham, and a 6.13/231.93 gave him yet another win over Graham's 6.25/219. He did not make the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He was runner-up to McEwen at the Funny Car Nationals at US 131. There, his final round, 6.31/206.89 lost to the "Mongoose's" 6.17/233. On August 18, he was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Don was the only 5-second qualifier with a 5.95 (Low ET). In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover's 6.52 in the "Pacemaker" Firebird. Don was reinstated when officials found out that Hoover was driving two cars. It didn't do Prudhomme much good as he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bill Spevacek. He had problems with his race car transporter on the way to Indianapolis and had to be towed in. He was still able to run a 6.07/234.37 to qualify #10. In round one, he beat Colson with a 6.12/234.98, but a second-round 6.27/226.75 lost to Meyer's 6.18/234. Ran 6.07/236.22 NHRA Indianapolis 9/80.

Notes: Don started the '80 season by winning the OCIR Super Bowl race. He beat Kenny Bernstein in the final. At the AHRA Winternationals, he again reached the final, but this time, he finished runner-up as Tom Hoover beat him. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.10/240.64 qualified #5. Prudhomme suffered a rare first-round loss to Gordie Bonin. On March 9, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Prudhomme set Low ET in qualifying #1, and he ran another 6.04 at 233.16 in the semifinals while beating Dale Pulde. In the final, he faced Jim Dunn, and the "Snake" boiled the hides while Jim took the victory with a 6.35/231. Everything went Don's way at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #1 at 5.98/238, then ran 6.12/235.60 over Roy Harris, a 5.94/234.98 over Al Segrini, and a semifinal 5.93/239.36 single when Pulde developed an oil leak and shut off on the line. Don's 5.93 set a new NHRA record. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." It was the "Snake's day as his 5.98/238.09 beat Beadle's 6.17/231. His new Horizon debuted soon after this in April at OCIR.

Notes: Colson qualified #2 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a career-best 6.00/240.64. He lost to Don Prudhomme in the first round. At the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, a 6.14/234.98 qualified #5, but he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Nick Harmon. His season ended on a high note when he won the NHRA World Finals at OCIR. He had announced his retirement shortly before the race and then went out and qualified #1 with a 6.11/238.09 (Top Speed). He beat Dale Armstrong in the first round. In round two, his 6.21 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.30, while a 6.41/231.36 advanced in the semifinals when Roy Harris crossed the center line. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle was running well, setting Low ET at 6.06. But in the final, he had trouble and shut off, giving Colson's 6.28/230.17 the victory. Ron did well in the NHRA points standings, finishing third for the season.

Notes: This car debuted at the Epping WWCS in August 1980. Its maiden pass was during Saturday night qualifying on a racing surface that had been wet for an hour while the rain was still falling. Classic Roy Harris! Photo from Indy 9/80, where Roy qualified #9 with a 6.067/238.72. He faced low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max in the first round." Luck was on his side, though, as Beadle smoked the tires in their race, and Harris advanced into the second round with a 6.28/236.22. Tim Grose smoked the tires in his second-round race, and Roy ran 6.31/233 for the win. His luck ran out in the semifinals when he lost to eventual winner Ed McCulloch. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open on September 14. Roy qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.40 lost to Dick Rosberg's 6.19 in the "Fighting Irish" Firebird in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Fallnationals. In October, he was at Fremont for the Winston Record Challenge race. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Prudhomme in the semifinal, where his 6.35/214.28 fell to the "Snake's" 6.08/220. Harris ended his season at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified #7. He beat Tom Ridings in round one, and in the second round, his 6.21 beat Rob Williams' 6.29. He got out of shape in the semifinals and crossed the centerline while racing Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian." Roy's Indy 6.06 was his best NHRA national event ET of the year, and an earlier 240.64 from Pomona was his best speed in the Arrow).

Notes: Hoover's first funny car. Woody Gilmore chassis, Fiberglass Trends Challenger body. Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. | After running a SOHC Ford-powered Top Fuel dragster for the last couple of seasons, Tom switched to FC's for '70. It was definitely a learning experience. His first time out with the car came at Irwindale shortly before the NHRA Winternationals. The first time they lowered the body, he was claustrophobic; he "got over that weird feeling after a few runs." He failed to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals but had transmission trouble in the first round and lost to Frank Federici in the "Shark." Tom had one of only two FCs that showed up at NHRA's third Division 5 race held at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD. Unfortunately, in their run for the money, his 8.13/187.50 lost to Art Ward's 8.05/175. He competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where all cars were to run three rounds. He fouled (8.16) in his first race, but a 7.47 in his second race beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" car. He also won his third race with a strong 7.28/206.42. He had a bad day in August at Minnesota Dragways. It was a four-car race, and he soloed in his first race with a 7.55/197.36 when John Collins, who was now driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" car lost fire. Hoover was to race Bryan Teal in the "Super Chief" in his second race, but while backing up from his burnout, Tom's brakes failed. He tried to stop the car by swerving it into the sand that ran alongside the track. Everyone got out of the way except for one boy who escaped with just some bruises. He repaired the brakes in time to make a final run against Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. Safford lost a rod on their run, and Tom's 7.34/200.89 got the win. His next stop was at Bristol for the eighth AHRA Grand American race. An opening round 7.99/164.23 got past Bob Sullivan's ailing Camaro, and in round two, his 7.67/187.10 beat Dick Harrell's 7.94/184. In the semifinals, Don Prudhomme's 7.18/204 sent Hoover's 7.56/198.96 packing. Hoover ran a career-best since joining the Funny Car ranks of 7.048/209 in qualifying #7 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. A first-round 7.209/204.54 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.22/206 in the "Super Duster." A National Dragster article stated that he had run a best of 6.90 this season. Tom's known best IHRA ET was a 7.04 at Rockingham.

Notes: Warren was at Irwindale on January 1 for its New Year's Day race. He failed to qualify but got into the show when Fred Goeske's Road Runner broke. Unfortunately, the car developed problems in the first round, and opponent Gordon Mineo soloed into the second round. On March 28, Warren was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.01/177.86 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 7.74/157. Gunter was back at OCIR on May 2 for its Big Four Championships. It was not a good outing. Warren stuffed it into the guardrail just past the finish line during qualifying. He was ok, not so much the car. | Very early picture of the first chassis under the original body. C&O TorqueFlite and Chrysler rear end. It was a real handful and ended up along the fence at OCIR, and new chassis was built. The original car weighed less than 1800 lbs. Even with the new lower and stronger chassis, the car still wanted to make a quick "jog" at about half-track. Every run was a surprise. I spent two years on tour back east and will never forget the good times. - Warren Gunter

Notes: Pedregon started the season at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January He and crew chief Lee Beard made six passes with a best of 5.33/272.06. Tire shake killed three runs, but the other two were 5.52/257.28 and 5.39/269.29. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Cruz set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 5.10/285.26. He eased to 5.87/170.68 in the first round, when Jerry Caminito broke, but in the second round, his 5.20/286.44 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.12/284 in Joe Pisano's car. The following week, he was in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a track record 5.07 at 284.18. He went on to win the race by beating Tom Hoover with a 5.13/288.00, Kenji Okazaki with a 5.13/289.01 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, his 5.20/287.90 took out Del Worsham's 5.27/283. In the final, he faced Jim Epler, and Cruz won with a 5.21/263.31 over Epler's troubled 9.56/89.65. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. Cruz qualified #4 with a 5.14/286.16. Once again, Cruz ran well, running 5.15/279.50 in the opening round over Worsham and a 5.22/277.26 beat Chuck Etchells' identical 5.22/276 in round two. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 5.17/281.09 in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.04/294. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.20/285.71 qualified #6. He beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.29/280.72, but a 5.27/250.83 lost to Force's 5.09/292 in round two.

Notes: Gary was running hard in '75. It was a good lead-up to his great '76 season. He started the '75 season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere, qualifying #5 in the sixteen-car show. He lost in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.44 qualified #14. A first-round 6.40/205.47 beat Neil Leffler, but unfortunately, he had crossed the centerline and was disqualified. He ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.46/212.76 qualified #7 in the twelve-car field but had the misfortune of breaking in the first round, against Don Prudhomme. At the Gatornationals, Gary ran 6.42/227.27 to qualify #3. He beat Gordon Mineo in the first round, but lost to Shirl Greer in round two, where he overpowered the track and smoked the tires. His next stop was at Irwindale for the 32-car Coca-Cola Championships. Gary beat an out-of-shape Leroy Chadderton in the opening round with a 6.80/178.92 and an easy 7.43/152.02 advanced past Larry Arnold who got sideways in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am and shut off. In round three, Burgin had another easy run where Norm Wilcox, driving the "Hawaiian," had issues and shut off on the line. But in the semifinals, he broke against Prudhomme, and the "Snake" ran a track record 6.25 to win. In May, he got a runner-up finish to Jake Johnston in the Pisano and Matsubara Vega at the Irwindale Fox Hunt race. Fremont also held a "Fox Hunt" race in May, and it featured the FC's running the Top Fuel cars with a .30 handicap on the 'tree. The cars all made three passes, and in Gary's first run, his 6.55/213 beat Dave Uyehara's Chevy-powered car. The second race was weird as the 'tree was never activated, yet his opponent, Gary Ritter, flew to an apparent win with a 6.71/172 while Burgin shut off on the line. The third round was stranger still: as soon as the 'tree blinked green, he and James Warren roared off, and the power went out. No times were recorded for their runs, but witnesses said that they were flying. Warren crossed the line first. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 6.50/215.82. A first-round 6.54/211.76 beat Al Segrini's 6.68/201 in the "Black Magic" Vega. But in round two, his 6.58/221.13 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.45/205. Gary was back at Irwindale for its Doubleheader (motorcycles and FC) event. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.72/197.80 beat a tire-smoking Arnold who was now driving the "Lil' Demon." But a 6.76/208.33 failed to get past Jim Dunn's 6.57/210 in the semifinal. He had an interesting outing at the first NHRA Division 7 race at Sacramento. He soloed in the first round, setting Low ET and Top Speed at 6.55/211.77. In the semifinals, he made another single at 6.73/161 when Dunn's Satellite broke. In the final, he went up against Roger Garten. It wasn't much of a race as Burgin had an oil fire on the line and shut off while Garten grabbed the win. Near the end of June, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. On July 13, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #2 with a 6.29/222.22. He advanced past a broken Bill Leavitt in the first round, with a 6.54/204.80. In round two, he smoked the tires and lost to McCulloch. The following week (July 20) found Gary at Minnesota for the third NHRA Division 5 race. It was only a four-car show, and Burgin won quite easily, setting low et and Top Speed in the final with a 6.67/221.67 over Carl Swanson's 6.97/200. He also won the next Division 5 race at Bison Dragways in Manitoba. He set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 6.69/222.22, and in the final beat Topper Kramer's 7.06/184 with a 6.73/222.22. At the NHRA Grandnationals, Gary didn't run as well as he would have liked. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5 with a 6.60/213.27, putting him in a first-round match with low qualifier Prudhomme. Gary's off pace 6.75/216.86 lost to the "Snake's" 6.47/212. The fourth NHRA Division 7 race was held at Bonneville Raceway on August 17, and the Funny Car field was again reduced to just four cars. Gary's 6.84/201.27 qualified #2, but in the first round, he was upset by Dennis Geisler's 6.65/199 in the "Lil' Demon" that beat his 6.94/204. Burgin ran 6.313/203.61 and 6.47/184.42 in winning the Funny Car Race of Champions at Englishtown, NJ, in August 1975. He had won Division 7 in 1974. - RT | Photo from Indy 1975. - MS | Ran 6.31/228.42 at Indy US Nationals 9/75.

Notes: Vic was at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.62/209.79. Unfortunately, a tire-smoking 7.97 in the first round lost to Norm Wilcox's 7.08 in the "Hawaiian." At St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals, a 6.80/196.51 qualified #7 in the eight-car field. He lost to eventual winner Dick Custy in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Tri-City for an eight-car show. All cars were to make three passes. Vic ran 6.96/197.80 to beat Wilcox's 7.97 in his first race. In the second race, his 6.83/200.00 lost to Tom Hoover's 6.72/191. In his final appearance, he got a solo run, running 7.02/196.93. In August, Vic was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. In the first round, he set Top Speed with a 6.53/222.77 that beat Denny Savage's out-of-shape 8.83 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, he improved to a 6.50 at 220.04 to beat Al Segrini's 6.80/211. Unfortunately, he suffered engine damage on the run and could not return for the final. Runner-up to PHR Championships race at US 131 to Don Prudhomme. Cecelia ran 6.60, 6.51, and 6.44. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1976.

Notes: Woody Gilmore chassis and Don Kirby body. The 6.44 was a Maple Grove track record set in June. Ran 6.57 at Gainesville, 6.67 at Columbus, 6.60 at Englishtown. Al debuted the "Black Magic" Vega at the NHRA Gatornationals in March. It created quite a stir as it was awarded the "Best Appearing Car" and the crew was awarded "Best Appearing Crew." The car could run as well as Segrini proved when he ran 6.77 to qualify #7. He improved to 6.56 in his first-round win over Gene Snow, but in the second round against Don Schumacher, the car went into a wheelstand and Al shut off. He was at Charlotte Speedway on March 31 for the IHRA Southern Nationals. Al qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show on the 1/8 mile track with a 5.05. He set Low ET with a 4.41/163.93 to win in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Kenny Safford driving the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals. He was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships where he qualified #2 with a 6.69/201.34 behind Ron Colson's 6.62/214.79 in the "Chi-Town Hustler.” Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He did reach the final at Englishtown's Super Sunday race in May, but he lost to Raymond Beadle. At the NHRA Springnationals, he just made the show qualifying in the #15 spot. He advanced past round one when Leroy Goldstein shut off in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. A second round 6.67/209.79 lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.56/207. The following week (June 16), Segrini was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. There, he qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.56. He soloed to a 6.48/216.34 in round one, when Frank Oglesby was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. In the second round, his 6.45/221.13 covered Bob Parmer's 6.59/219. He picked up to 6.38 in the semifinals to beat Bill Leavitt. This put him into the final against Billy Meyer. A final round 6.43/228.42 (Top Speed and a new track record) finished runner-up to Meyer's 6.34/223. He then won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 22. Al qualified #2 in the eight-car show behind Ivanof. He beat Tom Prock in round one, with a 6.54, and he advanced easily in the semifinals. His final round opponent was Jimmy King in the "King and Marshall" Satellite. Segrini set Low ET with a track record 6.44 at 221.67 (Top Speed) in the final to win over King's 6.62/201.

Notes: Mart started his last season by running at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. His 6.65/213.82 qualified #9 for the 32 car field. He improved to 6.56/219.51 in the opening round to beat Jim Adolph. In the second round, he beat low qualifier Pat Foster in the Barry Setzer Vega with a 6.63/217.39 to Foster's 6.73/209. In the semifinal, he had a close race with "Jungle Jim" Liberman that saw his 6.62/218.97 lose to JJ's 6.57/221. Higginbotham failed to qualify at the rain-delayed NHRA Winternationals, where 58 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His not qualifying was not because of insufficient power; it was the horrible track conditions as low qualifier was a 7.18! At Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals, his brakes failed to hold the car on the line for his first-round race against Paul Radici. Higginbotham's last race was the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 24. He qualified #4 and, in the opening round, his 6.67/218.97 beat Tommy Grove's 7.09/205. He got the "odd-lot" solo in round two and made an easy pass, but he fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals. After that, he retired from driving. Jim Robbs of RFI backed the car.

Notes: In January, Hoover started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was driving his new Firebird Trans Am. It was an eight-car field, and he ran 5.91/227.27 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.97/238.09 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.95/238. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.68/252.31. In the first round, both Hoover and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car ran 5.76 (Hoover at 229.65), but Oswald won. On March 15, Tom was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 5.81/248.61 (Top Speed). He advanced to the final, where he faced Jim Head. In the final, he slowed to 6.01/228, which lost to Jim's 5.66 track record pass. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.68/254.16. Once again, Hoover lost in round one, when Kenny Bernstein's 5.58/261 beat his 5.73/252.88. He didn't race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. Hoover was back in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.76/254.38 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 5.99/233.34 advanced when Tom McEwen exploded a supercharger. In the second round, his 5.88/231.36 lost to McCulloch's 5.66/260. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lost to Oswald in the first round. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as it was postponed one week due to rain and run on May 31, the same day Tom was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tom sold the car to Gary Page in England. Tom ran a confirmed 260.94 at Englishtown 87. Where was the 264 run? He went 5.87/234 at the AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Update on "264 run" He ran that in his #1 Qualifying performance at Ennis during the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge on 8/1/87 with a 5.592 ET. - Rob McCabe

Notes: The team ran the second half of the season, beginning at Indy, where Cristen qualified #7 at 4.921/306.12. She lost to a Jim Epler holeshot in round one, 5.02/303 to 4.987/301.60. Cristen was the firth alternate at Maple Grove with a troubled 12.599/66.34. Christen qualified #4 at Topeka at 4.971/263.56 and took a first round win over Al Hoffmann, 8.409/111.41 to an even more troubled 13.36/59. In round two, Tommy Johnson Jr. ended her day, 4.97/311 to 5.430/189.71. The team qualified #7 at Memphis at 5.026/292.71. Cristen took out Whit Bazemore in round one, 4.947/290.26 to 5.14/292. In round two, Tommy Johnson Jr. again got her, 4.99/300 to 9.049/88.22. That was the team's last event of the season. We formerly listed 4.915/309 for this car but that did not occur on the NHRA national event trail.

Notes: Crowerglide. In 1971, Snow fielded one of the first multicar teams in the sport, running a pair of mini-Chargers with longtime crew chief Jake Johnston as the other driver. Highlights of the season included the Super Stock Magazine Championships in York, Pa., a runner-up finish at the Summernationals, a win at the OCIR All Pro Series, and a Drag News Driver of the Year award. Ran 6.71 at Lions Drag Strip 10/71. Ran 6.71 Low ET at AHRA St. Louis. | Snow debuted his new Charger at a four-car race at Southland in March. The car was still in primer, and on Gene's first-ever pass in the car, his 8.19/128.20 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.35/187. In the second round, he singled, running a track record 7.03 at 194.38. A follow-up run of 6.94 showed that the new car was tough. The car's national event debut came at the NHRA Gatornationals, where Snow qualified #3 with a 6.85/204. He beat Tom Prock's 7.02 in the opening round with a 6.89, but in round two, he smoked the tires to an 8.13 loss to Phil Castronovo's 6.93. He dominated the final OCIR All-Pro race run the following week (March 27). There he set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.82/217.39. He then went on to win by running 7.02/201.79 over Dean LaPole, and an easy 6.9/210 advanced in round two when Dave Condit lost fire in the "L. A. Hooker." He eased past the semifinals to meet with Jim Dunn in the final. Dunn broke, and Snow ran 7.89/120.34 for the victory. The next day he jumped on a plane and went to Amarillo to drive his old Challenger, and he won there too. In April, he was at West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. He reached the final against Mart Higginbotham only to have his Charger break. He then won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas. A final round 7.36 stopped Charlie Smith. Then came his big win at the Super Stock Nationals at York US 30. Gene qualified #1 with a 6.93 but ran nothing but 6.8's in eliminations. He started with a 6.88/199.11 over Lew Arrington. Low ET came in round two, where his 6.85/209.79 stopped McCulloch's 6.97/214. Another 6.85 at 214.79 in the semifinals beat Leonard Hughes' 6.97/201. In the final, he faced newcomer Tim Kushi, and Snow stormed (pun intended) to a 6.88/219.51 (Top Speed) to beat Tim's 7.37/199. After that, he won an eight-car show at Epping, stopping Terry Hedrick in the final. He also won the AHRA Grand American held at Green Valley Raceway on May 23. He ran times of 6.93 (Low ET) at 201.34, 6.97/192.70 over Dick Harrell, and 6.98/203.60 over Higginbotham to reach the final. For the money, he raced Cecil Lankford in the "Brand X" Mustang. Snow's 6.99/169.81 got him the victory. June started with Snow bagging another win, this time at the Baton Rouge AHRA Grand American race. He set Low ET in the final with a 6.79 over a fouling Hughes. The next week (June 13), he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.89/215.31 qualified #3, and he beat Dunn in the first round, but he fouled against Sush Matsubara in round two. His next win came at the AHRA Springnationals held at Denver on June 27. There he beat John Dekker in the final. Englishtown was his next stop for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.92. A first-round 7.05/196 beat Kelly Brown who lost an engine in Barry Setzer's Vega. He got to solo in the next two rounds when Casey Powell was unable to run, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinals faced Hughes in the final, and Snow was just a bit late off the line, and his 6.95/207.37 lost to Hughes' 6.96/211. He won over an eight-car field at Union Grove two days later, setting Low ET at 6.71. Another runner-up finish came at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, where despite setting track records of 6.73/220.58 in the final, he lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.77/217. He lost to Tom Hoover in the semifinals at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals.

Notes: On this car's very first run, we set a new track record at Detroit for ET and MPH. We raced at 14 events in 1971 and set track records at 11 of the 14 events. Later that year, I had the worst funny car fire in the history of drag racing to that point at Lebanon Valley, NY. I was burned over 60 percent of my body. Notes: Phil was at Miami-Hollywood in March for its Winter Championships. An 8.24/166.35 advanced in round one, while in the second round, he set both ends of the track record with a 6.97/211.26 over Mike Burkhart who broke. In the semifinals, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 7.03/194.80. He faced Curtis Wasson's Chevy-powered Camaro in the final. Wasson's best in eliminations had been 7.59, but in the final, the Charger broke and slowed to 9.78/73.95 while Curtis got the victory with an 8.77/186. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the NHRA Gatornationals, the car was extensively damaged when the throttle stuck and Phil intentionally drove the car into the guardrail. He qualified #7 with a 7.05 and ran a best of 6.93 in eliminations before the crash in the semifinals. With the repaired and repainted car, he went to Maple Grove in May for an eight-car show. A 7.28/193.54 beat Pete Hill's 7.80/195 in the first round, but he broke against Bob Cain in the semifinals. He made the finals at the inaugural NHRA Grandnationals. During that final race against Sam Miller, Phil had a two-car length lead when he lost traction and skidded on the grease-sweep that was still in his lane after the cleanup of a Ray Motes blown engine during the Top Gas final. After losing the race in the manner that he did Phil was understandably upset at NHRA for what he thought was an insufficient effort in cleaning the track. He said "Another ten minutes of sweeping would have made all the difference. I don't plan to run any more NHRA events ever - I could have killed myself." That off the cuff remark cost him entry into the years biggest race, the NHRA Nationals at IRP over Labor Day weekend. The NHRA pulled out and rejected his previously approved entry for Indy. Cooler heads prevailed later in the year, and he was allowed to enter the NHRA World Finals in Amarillo. In that race, he used consistent low to mid-7-second ETs and opponents' breakage to become the NHRA World Champion. His 7.15 at 210.28 was good enough in the final to beat a broken Jake Johnson. Ironic that the man that said he would never run another NHRA event became world champion. And the association that denied him entry into their biggest race now had to honor him. Phil ran the Charger until November when a new Woody Gilmore built Challenger made its debut.

Notes: Blown fuel, rear-engine exhibition racer. Former Dick Branstner, Roger Lindamood-campaigned 1965 "Dart Charger." Garlits originally painted this car white with polka dots and called it the "Polka Dart." Promoters insisted it carry his name and be black, so it was painted that way. Garlits yanked the Dart's original TorqueFlite trans, replaced it with a direct drive unit, and moved the entire mill rearward another 13 inches. This car was destroyed in a crash in Detroit in 1966. Garlits replaced this car with the "Don Garlits Dart 2," a slingshot rail with a Dart roadster shell. | As mentioned, the Dart was wrecked in Detroit on June 11. The car went into a wheelstand in the lights at 157 mph and flipped over onto its roof. Luckily, it never got airborne but just continued sliding down the track on its roof. Emery was not hurt, and at first, it seemed that the car was not too badly damaged. However, upon further inspection, it was found that the frame was damaged pretty badly. Notes: Undefeated at SIR until McCulloch beat them on 8/05/72. Despite the loss, set 6.49/224 track records at SIR Seafair Funny Car Nats (14,000 fans watched.) Won the 1972 OCIR PDA Championships, beating Gary Burgin in the final. Also #1 qualifier, Low ET and Top Speed (6.551/223.32) at Tulsa PRA race. Ran 6.49 at Seattle on August 15/1972. Featured in the 2/73 issue of Hi-Performance Cars. - RT | Art Whipple teamed up with Ed Wills for the '72 season. Wills was still the owner of the car, but Art came on board with his mechanical skills. The 118" Don Long car cost Ed $25,000 to build. It used a 1,700 hp Keith Black Hemi. The crank rods, and pistons all came from KB's shop. Engle supplied the cam. The blower was the work of Marc Danekas and an Enderle injection unit sat on top. A Lenco two-speed with a Crowerglide flywheel and clutch was used. Wills built the Satellite body and Kenny Youngblood painted the realistic-looking grill. The lettering was done by Neil Aveill while the candy red and gold paint was sprayed on by Ron Schramek. The car weighed 1,800 lbs. and according to the January '73 Drag Racing USA issue, it had run a best of 6.40/225 up until that time (the magazine had three month lead time). Confirmed 6.48 at Lions. ET from (Drag Racing USA 1/73)

Notes: Qualified number 3 at Indy '72 with a 6.529 and finished runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Ran 6.769 at NHRA Amarillo 72. | Bonin debuted the "Pacemaker" Vega in April at the Seattle season opener. He qualified for the eight-car field and, in round one, beat Rich Rogers. Unfortunately, he lost in the semifinal. He did better at the Northwest National Open, also held in Seattle. It was another eight-car show, and Bonin ran 6.92/185.56 to advance over a broken Kenny Martin in the opening round. In the semifinals, his 6.89/207.36 beat Twig Zeigler's quicker 6.85/213. This put him into the final against Kenney Goodell. Gordie tried hard, but his 6.91/206.42 finished runner-up to Goodell's 6.68/207. Gordie qualified #9 for the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 (times unknown but between 6.63 and 6.68). He lost a 7.10 to 7.10 decision to first alternate Omer Carruthers in round one.
