Notes: Jim drove at two NHRA events in 1979. Did Jake Crimmins drive at IHRA Milan? The car reportedly went 238.09 there. Jim was at Englishtown in the spring for the NHRA Division One race. In the first round, his 6.65/210.77 defeated Bob Seifert. A 6.50/164.53 beat George Johnson in the semifinals. He lost to Jake Crimmins in the final. Qualified #14 at NHRA Columbus at 6.300/216.34 and defeated Trip Shumake in round one, 6.282/216.34 to 6.322/236.84. Raymond Beadle and Jim were both off the pace in round two, but Beadle was less so and won a 6.61 to 6.93 contest. Adolph Improved to a #5 qualifying 6.194/231.95 at NHRA Englishtown. He won another first-round contest with another 6.28. A 6.280/231.36 took out Bob Pickett's 11-second shut-off this time. Ron Colson's 6.27/230 took out Adolph's (blown transmission) own 11-second shut-off in round two. He was back at Englishtown for the Crazy Eddie Night of Thrills race. This race had all ten cars competing, running two rounds with the two Low ET cars advancing to the final. Jim didn't reach the final as he got out of shape in his first race and shut off against Jake Crimmins, and his 6.36/226.13 lost to Roy Harris' 6.29/230 in his second. This was the last NHRA event for the team. Jim showed up at the World Finals in Pat Johnson's Playboy-sponsored Corvette. | R/U at the March Meet to Menzies/Jackson. - Joe Mooore

Notes: 398" early hemi, Hilborn bug catcher, TorqueFlite, Logghe chassis combo. The car was featured in 3/68 SS&DI magazine. - RT | Confirmed 7.32/199.10 at Fremont in 11/69. | The 202 mph run was at Gary, which was suspect, unfortunately. He did run 200 at New England Dragway in 1969. Fiberglass Trends 68 body with a 69 upgrade. 1958 392 Chrysler Hemi. - Dennis Doubleday | Won NE Dragway Funny Car Nats in 69 at 7.32/200.00. |Arrington started his '69 season by qualifying with a 7.98 at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. But by qualifying ninth, he had to face low qualifier Don Schumacher in the first round. Don laid down a 7.59/195 to trailer Lew's 8.06/195.56. At the second OCIR All-Pro race on February 9, Lew qualified eighth with a 7.75/189.46. That alone was impressive since 35 cars were going for the eight spots available. He failed to make it to the finals. Lew beat the super-tough Tom Grove at Aquasco on March 30. It was a best of three match, and in the first race, Arrington got out of shape and lost to the Mustang with a 9.01 at a flying 184.42. Grove sawed an engine in half in the second race, and Lew won with an 8.35/185.18. He soloed for the match race win when Tom couldn't return for the third race. On May 25, he had a match race against Charlie Allen at Connecticut. In the first race, Allen's 7.67/184 beat his 8.19/182.18. In the second race, Arrington's 7.99/188.92 beat Allen's 8.30/164, and the last race saw Charlie win the match with a 7.73/188 beating Brutus at 8.30/187.88. On May 30, Lew was at Budds Creek for its Memorial Day Funny Car Championships. It was a six-car field, but it had some excellent cars in the show. Lew beat the "Frantic Ford" in the first round, with an 8.00/187.10. In the semifinals, his 8.01/183.66 beat Allen's 8.14/163. In the final, he ran Bruce Larson's USA-1 Camaro. Larson had earlier set a new track record 7.33, so things weren't looking too good for "Brutus." Sure enough, in the final, Lew had problems and shut off to a 9.16/157.89 while Larson got the victory with a 7.84/187. New England held its Funny Car Championships on June 8, and Lew set a track record 7.54/196.92 in the first round. He got out-of-shape in the second round and lost to Paul Stefansky's 7.85/172. Also, in June at New York National for an eight-car show, Lew set a 199.54 track record while beating Ron Rivero (7.80/180) in the first round. In the semifinal, a 7.68/196.50 beat Frank Oglesby's 7.78/188, but in the final, he lost to Tony Wahlay. Lew competed at the President's Gold Cup Championships at Aquasco on June 22, winning his first-round race with an 8.07/187.88 over Tom McEwen's tire-smoking 8.71/152. In the semifinal, Jim Liberman's 7.74/190 was too much for Lew's 7.86/189.46. Malcolm Durham was paired up against him at a match race at Budds Creek, Maryland, on June 28, and although Malcolm won the first race, Lew won the next two when Durham broke and couldn't repair. On July 3, Arrington went to Edgewater for an eight-car show, and a 7.90 in the first round, beat an out-of-shape Dick Harrell. In the semis, Pat Minick's 7.47/191 sent Brutus to the trailer. The next day (July 4), he went to Suffolk for another eight-car show. There he ran a first-round 7.67/191.08 over Pat Minick's ailing 10.33 and a semifinal (Low ET) 7.55/193.54 beat Liberman's 7.62/191. But in the final, Dean LaPole, driving Larry Christopherson's Nova, beat him with a 7.97/193. Atco held its fourth annual Funny Car Championships on July 9, and a first-round 7.48 track record by Ed Schartman beat Arrington's 7.81. Durham's 7.59/195 beat Lew's 7.73/194.38 in the first round, on July 16 at Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race, but Malcolm blew his engine, and with the break rule in effect, Brutus got back in for round two, where his 7.60/198.66 (Top Speed) beat Tom McEwen's 7.91/184. Unfortunately, Arrington fouled against Dick Harrell in the semifinal. He got himself a big win on July 20 at the Cars Magazine meet. He ran a best of 7.50/193.96 before beating Clare Sanders' 7.77 in the final with a 7.55. Lew lost early at the PHR Championships on August 2 when Minick set Low ET with a 7.33/201 over Lew's 7.48/196.93 in the first round. Lew ran at the AHRA Nationals on August 17 in New York but failed to get to the late rounds. He raced at Suffolk on September 7 and won his first race with a 7.56/191.08 over Ron Rivero's 7.60. In the second round, an 8.06/129 won when Henry Garcia lost a trans. In his third race, he fouled away Low ET at 7.45/196.50. He then went to Connecticut the following day (September 8) for a 14 car show. A first-round 7.63/193.12 beat Phil Castronovo's 8.33/162. He soloed in the second round with a 7.62/192.30 when Durham lost fire and a Low ET 7.56/191.08 beat Clare Sanders' 7.77/189.46, putting Lew in the final against Rivero. In the final, a 7.72/188.28 beat Ron's 7.93/181 for the title. He faced Liberman at Maple Grove for a best two-out-of-three Match race on September 13 and beat Jim two straight with runs of 7.61/188.66 and 7.53/191.48 over JJ's best of 7.67/186.32. On September 21 at New England's third annual Funny Car Championships, Lew beat Bill Lawton with a 7.32/195, to Lawton's close 7.32/200, followed by a 7.38/199.50 over Paul Stefansky's 7.88/181. In the final, he beat Liberman again with a 7.44/199.50 to JJ's off pace 8.70. He failed to make it into the final on November 2 at the Sears Point North/South Championships, but he did run a 7.89/194.60 over Kelly Chadwick in one of his races. On November 7 at OCIR for the Manufacturer's Meet, he qualified second with a 7.55 on the Wacky Funny Car team (cars that had motors that were not manufactured by the same manufacturer as the body). He won two of his three races running 7.61/196.93 over Mike Burkhart's 7.99/197 and 7.57/196.93 (again) over alternate Pete Bagnard. He lost to Gene Snow's 7.29/208 in the third round when he smoked the tires and slowed to an 8.09. Lew set both ends of Maple Grove track records at 7.39/196. - Ron Howard

Notes: By '78, few teams were using Vega bodies in AA/FC racing, and those that were, were more times than not, underfunded teams. This was one Vega that was feared by other teams. Anderson had the only Vega to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. His 6.41/221.67 put him in the dreaded #9 spot forcing him to run low qualifier Don Prudhomme, in the opening round. The "Snake" won their race with a 6.52/221 over Tom's 6.81/202.70. He made it into the final at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car show, and, in the semifinals, Tom Hoover smoked the tires against him and shut off. He faced Bob Pickett in the final, and this time Anderson smoked the tires while Pickett ran 6.61/219 for the victory. He was also runner-up to Mike Miller at the NHRA Division 3 Opener at Indianapolis. Tom also had the only Vega that made the field for the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. His 6.36/228.45 qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. But in the first round, the car got out of shape against John Lombardo, and he shut off to a 7.72/113.06 loss. Anderson got another runner-up finish at the NHRA Division 3 race at Martin, Michigan. A final round 6.25/222.77 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16/237. He was at Edgewater for the next Division 3 race, where he qualified #2 with a 6.43/218.97. A first-round 6.46 beat Murf McKinney's 6.91, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and lost to Larry Fullerton. Of course, he had the only Vega in the show at Englishtown for the Summernationals, but this Vega was laying down some numbers. His 6.17/230.76 qualified #9 and put him up against Prudhomme for the first round again. Prudhomme's 6.13 won their race, but Anderson's 6.25 in losing was nothing to be ashamed of. Tom did not race at any IHRA races until the Northern Nationals at Milan in July. At Milan, his 6.35 qualified #3. An opening round 6.25/227.27 beat Fullerton's 6.69/211, and a strong 6.12/229.59 in the semifinal beat Dave Settles' 6.17/215 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He faced Denny Savage in the final. Savage had run 6.11 in his semifinal race. But the hoped-for close final never came about as Anderson's wheelie bar broke, causing suspension damage to the Vega and forcing him to shut off. Savage had his own problems, as his on fire 7.28/134 got him the trophy. He went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show. His speed in qualifying was 225.56, but he blew his engine and was replaced by Kenny Bernstein in eliminations. Things didn't go so well back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. 21 cars were attempting to qualify for the eight-car field, and all just got one crack at it. Unfortunately, Anderson failed to run quick enough to qualify. He was at Beech Bend for the NHRA Division 2 race. In the opening round, his 6.40/219.51 defeated Ray Moats' 6.75/215. But he had damaged the engine and couldn't make his semifinal date with eventual winner Billy Meyer. He then went to Baton Rouge for the Division 4 final, where he finally picked up a victory. He was long overdue. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, Anderson had the only Vega that qualified for the field. His 6.19/224.59 got him the #13 spot. He ran 6.25/224.43 in the first round of eliminations, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.16/236.

Notes: McCulloch was at OCIR early in the year for its Funny Car opener. He ran well, reaching the final against Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max." Despite running a good 6.30/228.42, the "Max" stepped up to 6.01/234 to claim the victory. Ed did not go to Tucson to race at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.435/230.76. He lost in round one to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.206/226.13 to 7.118-153.06. Ed was back at OCIR for a sixteen-car show in March. While he didn't reach the final, he did run a strong 6.24. Ed's next NHRA national event was not until the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus in June. He ran 6.410 to claim the third alternate position. At Englishtown, Ed qualified #13 at 6.350/227.27. He got a measure of revenge on Ron Colson with a first-round win, 6.75/229.00 to 6.82/229.00. Ed shut off against Don Prudhomme in round two, sending the Snake on a 6.26/227.27 single. Ed debuted a new Plymouth Arrow at the Fallnationals in Seattle. His hometown for 1977 was confirmed on NHRA Summernationals TV coverage. | The Foster/Hume car, new in August '76, burned up at the '77 Fremont PDA in July, and he repainted and ran the '75-'76 Slawick car (at '77 SIR 64 Funny Cars, also) until the Arrow was ready. He even ran the old Orange, low-slung Dodge at a May match race at SIR. - Joe Moore

Notes: Bob won the Cajun Nationals this year. Pickett qualified #5 at Martin, Michigan, for the NHRA Division Three race with a 6.45/207.37. He picked up to a 6.39/228.42 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat low qualifier Don Prudhomme's 6.14/236. He was at Brainerd International for the US Funny Car Championships. On Saturday, he raced Prudhomme, and his 6.54/220.58 lost to Prudhomme at 6.24/235. Bob qualified on the "bump" at Ontario for the NHRA World Finals with a 6.260/230.76. He had problems in the first round against Pat Foster and shut down to 16.20-45. The 6.26 was Bob's best NHRA time this year. Did he run 6.165 somewhere? Former Tom Hoover "Showtime" Monza.

Notes: 107 IHRA. Definitely had this Trans Am at Gainesville. | Shirl Greer failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He did qualify on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.66/205. An opening round 6.35/230.76 beat Denny Savage's off-pace 7.55/134. A second round 6.43/222.22 lost to Gordie Bonin who had no ET recorded. The following week, he went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. The track was slick and he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Late in April, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 7.62/170 qualified #10, but in the first round, he shut down to 13.05/60 in a loss to Savage. Shirl did not qualify at the NHRA Springnationals. He didn't compete in any other NHRA events this year.

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and the car was powered by a 426 Chrysler Hemi on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Stats Courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy James Ibusuki). Confirmed 7.94 at Carlisle AR.

In the second round, the Camaro came to the line ailing and lost to Rusty Delling's 8.44/170.45. Still his 7.81/189.46 held for Low ET and Top Speed. On March 3, he qualified fourth with an 8.16/184.80 at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale where 30 cars attempted to qualify. A first-round 8.15/185.56 beat Norm Cowdrey's close 8.16/181 in the Blue Fox, but in round two, Bob blew his early Hemi while losing to Runyan's Corvair. Bob was at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show in May, but his first-round 8.30/181.44 lost to eventual winner Larry Reyes' 8.02/167 in the "Super 'Cuda."

Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12/1970. Ran 7.42/175 at OCIR on 4/18/70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race, but there he lost in the first round, to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round, and a 7.50/195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (Low ET) 7.43/172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76/187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round, and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight-car show at Lions on February 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (February 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, a first-round win foretold the final. Gene's 7.33/200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28/181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis, a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27/201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50/194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35/201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37/189.47. OCIR held another eight-car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight-car event, a first-round 7.86/172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81/192.30 beat his 7.92/186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette Funny Car Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (Low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first-round 7.35/197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41/198.23 in the Invader. A semifinal 7.42/175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44/191.08, but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95/141 and 7.86/179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88/185.56 and an 8.13/153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR Funny Car 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42/198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round, on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's Low ET blast of 7.25/199.50 beat his 7.74/195.65. Snively must have had a hex on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round, and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54/188.28). A win came at a sixteen-car field at Irwindale on July 17. He qualified #1 with a 7.67/190.26 (Top Speed) and beat Dave Beebe in the final with Low ET at 7.63. He then won the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 25, beating Ray Alley in the final with a 7.65/181.81. On August 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships, he ran a 7.42/188.28 in the first round, and a 7.73/177.51 in the second before his car caught fire in the semis. Gene was OK. Conway fixed the car and installed a Crowerglide clutch set up with a Lenco two-speed transmission. With this set up, he showed up at OCIR on August 15 for their Anniversary Race. A first-round 7.27/188.28 beat Leroy Hales' 7.84/184. In the second round, a 7.33/194.80 beat Bob McFarland's 7.97/176 and in the semifinal, a 7.70/200 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.84/177. In the final, Gene ran his best ever speed and ET of 7.18/206.89 over Mike Snively's 7.30/203. On August 29 back at OCIR for an eight-car show, Gene ran a first-round 7.03/204.68 and a semifinal 7.10/202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12/205.47. A runner-up finish on September 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44/194.80 and 7.42/197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.26/204.54 to Gene's 7.45/177.51. On September 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42/181.81 beat his 7.61/132.74 in the first round. At the OCIR East-West Championships on October 10, Gene's 7.19/198.67 beat Snively's 7.30/205.01 in the West portion of the race, but for the overall title he lost to Don Schumacher. Conway had run a best of 7.09/201.34 at the race. Gene (7.23/184.80) lost to Dave Beebe (7.09/198.23) in the first round, at the next event on October 24 at Lions, followed by a runner-up finish to John Collins in John Bateman's Maverick at the Pumpkin Day Open at Irwindale. He qualified fifth with a 7.30 and ran a first-round 7.28/208.32 over Larry Arnold. A semifinal 7.37/205.46 beat Charlie Therwhanger, but Collins' 7.23/200.88 beat his 7.44/188.24 in the final. At Irwindale for a 32 car show on November 14, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Arnold's 7.09/208.80 (Top Speed) in the second round. Gene qualified fifth on November 21 at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.28/185.18 to beat a wheelstanding Randy Walls in the first round, before smoking the tires to a losing 15.50-58 in the semis against Bob Pickett who won with an 8.49/131. Gene failed to qualify for Irwindale's Toys for tots race. He had a streak of luck when number eight qualifier Larry Arnold broke and Conway got into the show. He almost went all the way, beating Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 7.29/196.05 and then beating Jim Liberman in the ailing "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with a 7.37/200.44. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don had been running in the sixes on every run and in the final it was no different as the "Snake's" 6.92/192 beat Conway who crossed the centerline. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed at 6.925/218.97. Assuming that was run in 1971.

Notes: This is actually the '69 car that Danny had great success with. A '70 grill, new paint, but still a 427 SOHC power plant. Not as much success in 1970. See Barb's comments on the '69 car. Ongais started the '70 season at Irwindale for their New Year's Day race, where he qualified fifth with a 7.55 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 7.58/190.66 beat a crossed-up Marv Eldridge. He ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196.92 over Tom Grove's 7.71/194.38. Danny's motor blew in the semifinal, and the car caught fire on a 7.71/178.92 pass losing to Johnny Wright in another Mickey Thompson Mustang. Danny was OK other than some minor leg burns, and the car had minor damage. On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, he cooked his motor in the first round, while waiting for teammate Arnie Behling in M/T's Maverick to stage. He finally ran and won with a 7.61 over the ailing Maverick. A second-round 7.90 beat a sleepy Gene Snow at 7.66. Unfortunately, Ongais was unable to make the semis, and Snow was reinstated. He qualified second at NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53 but lost in round two. An eight-car show was run at Irwindale on February 15, and a 7.65 qualified Danny second. A first-round 7.68/189.06 beat Mike Miller's out-of-shape Dart. In the semis, a 7.52/195.94 beat Gordon Mineo, and in the final, Ken Safford cracked off a 7.35/197 over Ongais' 7.60/169.81. He suffered a rare first-round loss on February 22 at the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22 when Dave Beebe's 7.41/189 beat his 7.69/193.54. Ongais beat Prudhomme with a 7.25/201 to win the Lions AHRA meet. This was the meet where Don Garlits trans exploded, and he lost part of his foot. Because the lights were damaged, the funny car final used a flag starter. At Fremont, Ongais set a 208.32 track record. Another win came over an eight-car field on March 14 at OCIR for the blue Mustang's last win. A first-round 7.60/193.96 advanced when low qualifier Mike Van Sant lost oil pressure and shut off on the line. A semifinal 7.72/193.13 beat Steve Bovan, who lost an engine. In the final, a 7.61/187.50 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.09/176.12. OCIR held its final All-Pro race on March 28, and Ongais ran a first-round 8.37/113.63 easing up over a fouling Leroy Hales. Up against Tom McEwen in round two, he lost fire, and Gunter's VW was called in on the break rule to replace him. On April 18 at OCIR for another eight-car show, Danny qualified with a 7.39/182.18. He beat Bob Pickett (8.37/182) in the first round, with a 7.61/184.80. In the semifinal, a broken fuel pump drive ended his chances. Arnie Behling crashed and totaled the car at Lions soon after. Best NHRA National event speed 199.11, but in this car?

Shortly after that, he was at Fremont for its third annual exhibition Car Championships. Hedrick was running well; he even stopped the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove in the semifinals with an 8.55/176.55. He faced the newly supercharged Comet of Ed Schartman in the final and lost to the Comet's 8.08. His next stop was at Irwindale for its experimental Stock Invitational race. Qualified #11 at the Winters at 5.68/248.48, then beat Mike Dunn in round one, at 5.80/246 and Steve Hodkinson (shut off) in round two before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semis, 5.56/263 to 5.75/253. Dale qualified #12 at the Fallnationals at 5.75/252. He beat a fouling Mike Dunn in round one, but lost to Raymond Beadle in round two, 5.83/218 to an off pace 6.61/150. At the World Finals, Dale qualified 10th with a 5.569/262.92. He again beat Mike Dunn in round one, 6.17 to 6.32, and Don Prudhomme in round two with an improved 5.516/260. Dale got a flat tire on the burnout round three, sending Ed McCulloch's 5.48/268 into the final.

Notes: John started the season at the AHRA Winternationals at Tucson. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94/197. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Gordie Bonin. He lost that race when his 6.77/216 fell to Bonin's 6.65/219. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.21/234.37 but his 6.43/194.38 lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer's 6.15/238 in the first round. He barely made the show at the Gatornationals, qualifying #16 with a 6.143/241.28. The car went into a wheelstand in the first round, and he shut off, losing to Dale Pulde. The next race on the NHRA schedule was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. This was only an eight-car field, and his 6.64 best was well off the 6.16 "bump." The following weekend (May 3), he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #3. He failed to reach the finals. John went to St. Louis early in June for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. He qualified #4 and then ran 6.56/210.76 in the opening round to beat Larry Gould's quicker but later 6.51/221. He improved by two tenths in the semifinal to a 6.36, but that wasn't enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 6.26. Columbus was his next stop for the NHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #10 with a 6.23/226.70. He upset Prudhomme in the first round, where Collins' 6.20/239.36 beat the "Snake's" 6.56/175. In round two, he continued to impress, where his 6.31/215 easily defeated Fuzz Miller's 6.61/192. A 6.34/232.55 fell to eventual winner Craig Epperly's 6.29/210 in the semifinal. His best NHRA national event ET was a 6.127 at Englishtown. The Gainesville speed was his fastest number. Where did John run 6.01?

Notes: Worsham started the season by qualifying #9 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.36/284.18. A 5.31/284.81 in round one, beat Gary Densham's 5.44/249, but in round two, his 5.47/254.30 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.29/262. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.37/279.93 qualified #6. Unfortunately, he lost to Richard Hartman in round one. Houston was NHRA's next stop for the Supernationals. Del's 5.29/280.02 qualified #4. Paul Smith broke against him in the first round, and Del advanced with a 5.27/280.28. In round two, he lost to Al Hofmann. Worsham's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He ran 5.68/254.30 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. A 5.72/240.77 in round one, advanced when Paula Martin's Probe broke. In the semifinals, his 5.66/261.39 (Top Speed) beat Freddie Neely's 5.80/247. This put him into the final against Tom Hoover. This became an expensive pass for Del. About 700 feet into the run, the crankshaft broke. This caused a massive fireball. The engine explosion was so bad that it bent the upper main frame rail. The only thing holding the remains of the JP-1 in the car was the oil lines. Del was OK, but the car was totaled. Del recovered to have a pretty good NHRA national event season. He was runner up at Atlanta, Englishtown, and Indy and made it to round 3 at Memphis and Denver. He Ran NHRA best times of 5.194/286.89 at Ennis Fall, but he practically lived in the low 5.20s at 280 plus for the second half of the season. He set Top Speed at Sonoma at 280.89.

Notes: Although the car signage says "Boss 429," that is a 427 Cammer in the picture. Unsure whether Grove ran a 429 at some point, but it was not uncommon for Ford funny car teams to revert to the proven (if increasingly difficult to source) SOHC motor if the newer 429 hemi failed to get the job done. Car received a two-page spread feature in the 9/72 issue of SS&DI. - RT | Tom Grove was successful in '71, running his Ford-powered Funny Car. No one else was able to make the Ford run as well in Funny Car racing as he was. He was much like Bob Glidden had been in Pro Stock in the '80's. Unfortunately, while Glidden's run at the top lasted more than five years, Grove's was much shorter. In one of Tom's first appearances of the year, he downed Tim Beebe two straight using the Boss 429. The following week he ran a best of 6.98/213 using the SOHC. This was at a race where the Ramchargers couldn't go better than a 7.03. Early in April he was at Aquasco for an eight-car show. Grove had a small fire on the line in the first round, and his opponent, Pete Hill soloed. After the fire was extinguished, Tommy came out and ran a single. It was a 6.98 at a track record 213.76. He was going to try to better this on another run, but he had a blower explode and was done for the day. On April 10, he ran a 6.82/218 at Miami that was equaled at Suffolk on May 9. His best time of 6.76 came at Capitol on May 19 using the SOHC. He was at Suffolk for a best of three match race against Mike Burkhart. A late 7.11/207.36 lost to Mike's 7.21/206 in their first race, but Grove came back to win the next two races and the match with runs of 6.98/211.26 and 6.83/212.26. The speed was a track record and the ET tied Gene Snow's track record. At the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Tom had Low ET of eliminations with a 6.88 before losing to a holeshot by Charlie Therwhanger in the semifinals. Aquasco held a Ford vs Chevy Funny Car race. Tommy ran really well, running Low ET in the opening round with a 6.93/206.42 over Gene Conway. In the second round his 7.29/202.24 beat Terry Hedrick and a 7.27/205.46 won his third race over Malcolm Durham. On May 27 he was at Minnesota for a four-car, round-robin race. In the first race, Grove's 7.69/173.74 lost to Butch Maas' 7.25/168 in the "Hawaiian." In his second race a 7.37/207.85 beat Hedrick and the two ran again in the third round with the same results, Grove's 7.56/202.70 beat Hedrick's 7.82/198. Another semifinal finish came at Bristol on June 20 where he lost to Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Springnationals. He was back at Aquasco for the President's Cup Championships where a 6.96/210.28 (the only "six" of eliminations and Top Speed) beat Roger Lindamood's 7.17/178. But in the semifinals, while pulling away from Mike Burkhart his transmission exploded and Mike overtook his coasting car. On July 7, Grove was runner-up to Jake Johnston at the King of Kings Funny Car meet. On August 18 in Baltimore, Maryland, Tom's car hauler and car burnt to the ground, and he was forced to use his '70 car as a backup. Then, on September 3 in Orlando, Florida, Grove won a Funny Car meet with 7.51/191 times in the old car. Times were close to the track record for Orlando. He had no trouble booking match races, since promoters liked the fact that he was one of the few Ford-powered funnies left. — Ron Howard

Notes: Dick Rosberg teamed with Tim Beebe on this Camaro Funny Car. With the Chrysler entries ruling Funny Car competition in '71, it was good to have a competitive Chevy running, although it too used Hemi power. The car used a 118" wheelbase Fletcher chassis. The rear end was a Detroit Locker with 4.10 gears. Powering the car was a stock stroke 426 Hemi built by the "Ramchargers." Venolia pistons sitting on M/T rods were used as well as an Engle cam. A GMC blower sat on a Cragar manifold and was prepared by Larkin. Cragar also supplied the blower drive. Hilborn injection took care of the fuel. A B&J two-speed transmission was used. J&E Fiberglass built the Camaro body. At the time it was built, it cost over $15,000 and took three months. | At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Rosberg qualified for the 32 car field with a 7.52. He picked up to 7.40 in the first round, to beat Randy Walls' Chevy-powered Nova. A second-round 7.36/191.08 beat Dale Pulde's 7.65/186 in Mickey Thompson's Ford-powered Pinto, but in the third round, he fouled while his opponent, Gordon Mineo, crossed the centerline. Both were disqualified. In mid-March, he was at Tulsa for a round-robin show. Both he and Bobby Rowe kept taking turns resetting the track record. First Rowe's 7.63 got it, then Rosberg took it away with a 7.59. Bobby got it back with a 7.56. The "Fighting Irish" finally took it with a 7.49. The car's next good showing came at the NHRA Gatornationals. Dick qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.99. He advanced easily in the first round, when Tom Sneden broke. In the second round, he improved to 6.96, but it wasn't enough to get around eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 6.75 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. Rosberg had an interesting day at Suffolk on August 22. A best of three match race was scheduled between Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen. But McEwen's Duster broke and could not run, so Dick filled in. The fans did not expect to see the "Fighting Irish" car win two straight. Dick ran 6.86 and 6.87 to beat Prudhomme's 6.97 and 6.95. In the second race, the "Snake" hurt his engine and could not return. So Butch Kernodle raced Dick with his injected Ford-powered A/FC. Dick won easily with a track record 6.80. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.85 qualified #15, and Dick lasted until the second round before losing to Pulde. Rosberg used 774 at first and later 333 for comp numbers. Also, they ran 6.90/206 in winning at Epping 1971.

Notes: Dean started the season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #9 with a 5.20/282.04. He beat Richard Hartman in the first round, with a 5.24/283.01. Things didn't go as planned in round two. He beat his opponent Cruz Pedregon as planned with a 5.22/285.26 beating Pedregon's 5.25/283, but in the shut down area, Dean had trouble getting his car stopped and he ended up hitting the hay bails at the end of the track and wrecking the Firebird body. For the semifinals, they installed their old Probe body. Unfortunately, a 5.25/283.46 lost to Al Hofmann's 5.11/278. At the Quality Care Nationals, Skuza qualified #10 with a 5.28/280.63, but he fouled away a 5.34/261.32 in the first round, against eventual winner John Force's 5.24/282.
