Notes: The "Candies and Hughes" team would never have suspected their car to not qualify in its debut at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. On every qualifying attempt, the car smoked the tires. Oswald's best was only 7.33/126.93 (seventh alternate). Early in March, the team went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark's 6.00/250.69 (Top Speed) qualified second behind Al Segrini's 5.95/237. Oswald beat Johnny White in the first round with a 6.09/246.57. In the semifinal, his 6.03/250.00 beat Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" car. He faced Segrini in the final, and Oswald's car died on the line giving Al a solo pass for the win. Things really turned around at Gainesville, where Mark qualified #1 with a 5.87/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record). Unfortunately, the car went up in smoke in the opening round, and he lost to Frank Hawley driving the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Atlanta, Mark's 5.93/245.23 (Top Speed) qualified second to John Lombardo's similar 5.93/232. Oswald faced Hawley in the first round, and he fouled, giving the "Chi-Town" bunch an easy win. The team's first IHRA event of the season was the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. It was another eight-car field, and Mark's 6.02 qualified #3. He lasted until the semifinal. He then went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals, where the team got its first win of the year by defeating Raymond Beadle, who was driving the "Blue Max" in the final. The following week (May 29), Mark took the pole at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.90 (Low ET) at 243.24. By now, the team was becoming the car to watch. Billy Meyer overpowered the track in the opening round and smoked the tires against him, and Mark's 6.21/229.59 advanced. Don Prudhomme did the same in the semifinal, and Mark ran 6.02/249.99 (Top Speed). He faced Segrini in the final, and both ran 6.17 (Oswald at 241.28), but Al crossed the stripe first for the win. Oswald wasn't down for long as he then went to Bristol on June 5 and won the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.92 and then beat a tire-smoking Tom McEwen in the first round with a 6.13/240.00. In the semifinal, he set Top Speed with a 6.52/248.61 that beat Beadle. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and Mark cut a great light while the "Snake" didn't. Oswald's 6.00/236 beat Don's better 5.86/245. The team "only" qualified #8 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.02/247.93 (Top Speed). But Mark had a bit of luck on his side. His 6.19/240.00 defeated a crossed-up Frank Mancuso in the first round. John Force smoked the tires hard in round two, and Oswald advanced with a 6.18/241.93. Johnson had his parachute deploy early in the semifinal, and Mark won with a 6.41/222.22. In the final, he faced Beadle, and Raymond's 6.05/238 got the victory over Mark's 6.27/235.60. Still, with the runner-up finish, Oswald now sat second in the NHRA FC points chase with his 2,980 running behind Hawley's 3,730. Early in July, the team made the trip to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Mark's 5.97/247.25 qualified second to Prudhomme at 5.91. Seeming bogus times were given in the first round to both Hawley and Oswald, but Mark's 5.62 at only 240.00 beat Force's 6.08/240. In the semifinal, he ran 6.07/243.90 to beat Ken Veney. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and another holeshot got the "Candies and Hughes" team the win. Mark's 6.34/245.245.23 beat the "Snake's" 6.31/241. The following week (July 10), he was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Mark qualified #4 but failed to reach the finals. Then came the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. In qualifying, Mark had made runs of 5.90/228.42, 5.99/235.36, and 5.93/251.39. His times set Low ET and Top Speed. His 5.88/248.61 in the first round beat Tom McEwen's 5.93/247. In round two, Segrini's 6.11/243 fell to Oswald's 5.92/249.30. Johnson's "Custom Body" car broke a rear end in the semifinal and a 5.95/243 advanced. In the final, he raced Force, and John's 6.00/245 finished second to Mark's 5.92/251.39. It was quite a performance, and it brought Oswald within 19 points of Hawley in the points chase. Hawley gained some points back at Denver. Oswald qualified #5 for the NHRA Mile High Nationals for the eight-car field with a 6.14/243.24, and Frank qualified #1. That set up a first-round meeting between the two that saw Hawley's 6.08/233 beat Mark's 6.18/242.58. Hawley went on to win. At Brainerd, he lost more points to Hawley. Mark qualified #4 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.89/250.69. He beat Ron Correnti in round one, and in round two, his 5.95/248 took out Segrini. In the semifinal, the car broke against Bernstein. Hawley made the final and finished runner-up. The point spread was now at 8,097 for Frank to Mark's 6,600. Mark had earned enough points (1265) to qualify first for the Big Bud Shootout at Indy. In the first round of the specialty race, he ran 5.86/250.00 to beat Tom Anderson. Another 5.86 at 251.39 in the semifinal was not enough to beat Bernstein's 5.81/256. The actual race at the NHRA U.S. Nationals saw Oswald's 5.86/253.52 qualify #5. In the first round, his 6.15/236.22 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.27/234. In round two, Bernstein got him again. Mark's late 5.88/257.87 (Top Speed and a new track record) lost to Kenny's 5.93/250. The points now stood at 8,917 for Hawley to Oswald's 7,484. The next week (September 11), he picked up the win at the IHRA U.S. Open Championships at Rockingham. He qualified #3, and he set a 254.23 track speed record. He also set Low ET in the semifinal with his 5.83/253 beating Beadle. In the final, Pulde's 5.96 lost to Mark's 5.84. Going into the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol, Oswald was also second in the IHRA's FC points chase. He was just 54 markers behind Beadle. The two qualified one-two, with Mark's 5.74/253.52 (Top Speed and Low ET) getting the pole. He soloed in the first round when Bernstein broke, and a 5.89 beat Correnti in the semifinal. In the other semifinal race, Beadle smoked the tires and lost to Pulde. Oswald was the IHRA FC Champion for '83, and in the final, he also won the race with his 5.79/252.80 topping Pulde's 5.85/245. In his funny car debut at Pomona, Oswald ran a 7.335/126.93 to DNQ. He ran 254.23 on March 11, 1983, at the 1983 Gators to become the fifth entry in the Crane Cams 250 MPH Club for Funny Car. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. NHRA time sheets credit him with a 5.621 Low ET in eliminations at Sanair. Frank Hawley was credited with a 5.716 in that round. It seems fishy, but it's on the sheets. Low ET for Top Fuel cars there was Richard Tharp's 5.662! Mark's booming 257.87 was actually a massive holeshot loss in round two at Indy; Kenny Bernstein treed him, .472 to .546, and then held on to take a 5.930/250 to 5.888/257.87 win (.032 second margin of victory - about 12 feet). Mark ran a 5.825 at NHRA Fremont for his second-best ET of the year.

Notes: Blown fuel. This was the car Jack ran for Sachs & Sons in 1964 with all updated sheet metal. (Started 1964 with Sachs & Sons on side). Roof was about the only thing that didn't change. July 1966 Car Craft says this car ran 'around 9.20's' in 1965. Confirmed 9.79. We need confirmation of best ET. Run by Dee Keaton in 1966, then bought back from him by Chrisman when Chrisman's 1966 Comet roadster burned to the ground. - DD, BP

Notes: Everyone expected this car to win the NHRA Funny Car Championship in '89. After winning the championship the previous four years, it was a little disappointing how the season went for Kenny. It started at Pomona for the Winternationals. Kenny qualified way down the ladder in the #13 spot with a 5.47/266.74. He improved to a 5.42/264.16 in the first round to beat Dale Pulde. In round two, a consistent 5.43/269.21 beat Tom Hoover. In the semifinal, he beat Chris Lane with a 5.48/265.33. In the final, he met who was soon to be his nemesis, Bruce Larson. And sure enough, Larson scored the win over Bernstein. The next event on the NHRA schedule was the Supernationals. Kenny qualified #4 with a 5.30/270.27 but broke a rear end in the second round and lost to Art Hendey. The Gatornationals was the next stop; a 5.39/269.70 qualified #6. He lost to Larson in the second round. At the fourth race of the year, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.47/266.27, but once again, he lost in the second round, this time to Eric Reed. He looked like the Bernstein of old at the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. He qualified #1 with a 5.25 (Low ET) at 280.11. He beat Scott Kalitta in the first round and then got a couple of lucky breaks when, in round two, both he and Hoover smoked the tires, but Kenny's 6.45/232 held on for the win. In the semifinals, he ran a 5.42/270 to win over Ed McCulloch, who shut off to a 10.00. In the final, he ran Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Probe, and once again, he had a little luck when Oswald broke, and Bernstein scored his first victory of the season. The next race was the Cajun Nationals. Kenny used a 5.50/266.50 to qualify #4. In the first round against John Martin, the car broke on the burnout, giving Martin an easy single. The seventh race of the season was the Springnationals at National Trail. Bernstein qualified #3 with a 5.33/269.13. He beat Kalitta in the first round with another 5.33 but smoked the tires and lost to Jim White in round two. A strong performance was turned in at the Grandnationals in Canada. Kenny set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.44/265.72. In the first round, both he and Johnny West had problems, and both ran 5.60, West at 253 and Bernstein at 212.31, but the Buick still won the race. A 5.47/270.92 (Top Speed) beat Hoover's 5.68 in round two. In the semifinals, he beat Don Prudhomme's 5.73/231 with a 5.48/254.47. Once again, he met with Oswald in the final, and the results were the same, with Kenny's 5.51/265.72 beating Oswald's close 5.54/258. He didn't have to wait long for his third victory of the year as it came at the next event, the Summernationals at Englishtown. He qualified #3 with a 5.35, beat Hendey in the first round, and John Force in the second with a 5.36/272. He ran a solo 5.40/270 in the semifinals when Prudhomme broke just off the line. In the final, he was paired with McCulloch, and Kenny ran a 5.41 to win over Ed's 5.50. He was a favorite to win when the teams headed to Denver for the Mile High Nationals. He didn't disappoint in qualifying when his 5.53/263.38 (Top Speed) got the pole. He beat Hendey in the first round, and a 5.62/254 beat Mike Dunn's close 5.65 in round two. But in the semifinals, Oswald put him away with a track record 5.50. The California Nationals was next, and again Kenny qualified well with a 5.39/273.88, taking the #3 spot. Unfortunately, he and Tony McCallum ran 5.52 in the first round, with Tony winning. The next race was the Seafair Nationals at Seattle. Bernstein qualified #4 with a 5.34/278.89 (Top Speed). He beat Hendey's 5.57/260 in the first round with a 5.35/276.66. In round two, a 5.41/248.23 beat R.C. Sherman, and in the semifinals, he took a big win over Prudhomme with a 5.34/276.07, beating the "Snake's" 5.40/263. In the final, he met Larson, and despite running quicker and faster with 5.37/273.22 times, he lost to Larson's holeshot 5.40/271. At the Northstar Nationals, a 5.43/266.11 qualified #2. When McCallum broke, he ran an easy 11.70/72.42 in the first round. But in round two against Larson, Kenny ran even worse when he smoked the tires to a 14.35/70.56 to lose to Bruce's 5.51/271. Kenny and Dale probably thought things couldn't get worse when they went to Indy for the US Nationals. A 5.37/276.75 qualified #8 there, but he lost to Hoover in round one. They went to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals and set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.35/264.71. Kenny got past a fouling Gary Bolger in the first round, and in the semifinals, he ran a 5.64/216.35 that beat Doc Halladay's quicker 5.61. In the final, he met the second qualifier, R.C. Sherman, who beat him with a 5.50 to the "Budweiser King's" 5.54. On September 10, he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. A 5.51/264.41 qualified #2. He smoked the tires to a 6.67 in the first round but still beat Halladay. A 5.54/272 beat Johnny West's 5.98/244 in the semifinals. Kenny got his first IHRA victory of the year when he stopped a tire-smoking Darrell Amberson in the final with a 5.56/273.53. A week later (September 17), he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He broke 280 in qualifying with a 5.25/280.37 (#3). Another 5.25 at 279.06 beat a fouling Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in round two, he smoked the tires in a 6.80/141.17 loss to Larson's 5.30/276. He also lost in the second round at Topeka for the NHRA Heartland Nationals. There, his 5.44 lost to Oswald's 5.34. The following week (October 8), he was at the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.21/277.60. Another 5.21 at 278.46 beat Hendey in the first round. A 5.24/277.43 advanced in round two when Tony McCallum broke, but in the semifinals against Prudhomme, he smoked the tires to a losing 9.29/79.33. The NHRA tour then went to Arizona for the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway. Kenny qualified #2 with a 5.48 at a track record 271.98. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, while a 5.49/267 in round two advanced when Jim White lost a blower on the line. In the semifinals, he slipped to a 5.56/268.17, losing to eventual winner Larson's 5.43/268. At the season-ending World Finals at Pomona, Bernstein did not end his Funny Car career as he would have liked. He qualified #4 with a 5.32/278.46, but in the first round, against Jerry Caminito, he lost with a 7.30/184.84. In the season-long NHRA points chase, he finished third behind Larson and Prudhomme. In the IHRA standings, he finished #7, even though he only ran two events. Some drivers would have loved to have seasons like that, but it was below his expectations for Kenny. Set 5.257 national record at Memphis 89. Ran 276.75 at 89 Big Bud Shootout. Photo from Indy 1989.

Notes: Baddest dog in the land. Ran quickest and fastest times in the class in Round 1 at Ontario 72 (6.294). Then ran 6.30/235.64 in Round 2 and 6.31 in Round 3. Lost in finals to Jim Dunn when Pat redlighted. Earlier in the year, Foster had a blower explosion at Lions in May, hit the guardrail and destroyed the body. They put a new body on it and repaired the chassis at Buttera's. | Ran 6.59 Low ET at OCIR Funny Car 500. Also ran 6.47 at OCIR 72. Featured prominently in the movie Funny Car Summer. Pat was the number one qualifier at 6.36 at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2, but the chutes tangled, and he went into the sand trap, damaging the car beyond repair. Omer Carruthers took his place in the field.

Notes: Crowerglide Direct Drive. Snow's 7.23/208.71 mph run at the Dallas Int'l Motor Speedway-based Springnationals on May 3 was the first 200-mph run in NHRA Funny Car competition. He also went 211.26 at that event, but did not back it up. Set Low ET and Top Speed at York at 7.23/214.24. Snow also won three AHRA Grand American Series events, the AHRA Points Championship, and the AHRA Driver of the Year award. He concluded the year with a best run of 6.76/218.44 at Lions Drag Strip. "We carried a spare motor the whole year and never had to use it," said Snow. "It was an extraordinary deal." - NHRA | Qualified fourth at NHRA Ontario 11/21/70 at 7.086/203.61. Ran 6.83 at Suffolk. | Gene Snow hit some shocking speeds with his Charger in '69, like 214 mph, so why on earth would you change cars for '70. It was easy as in those years the cars were advancing so fast that last year's winner was this year's non-qualifier. Also Dodge had brought out the new Challenger and it had a smaller front end than the big boxy Charger did. The Challenger featured a 2" chopped top and the body came from Fiberglass Ltd. Al Bergler did all the interior tin. Keith Black built the 426 Hemi that used M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons. A Crower roller cam was used. Black also used his magic on the heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold and Don Hampton modified the 6/71 GMC blower. Up top sat an Enderle injector. The power was transmitted through a Crowerglide clutch and flywheel setup with four discs to a Detroit Locker rear with 4.30 gears. This became the car to beat in '70. | Gene started the season at the AHRA Winternationals in Jan where he didn't do too well. He advanced past round one with a 7.76 when Roy Gay's GTO broke, but in round two, he slept on the line and his 7.66 lost to last year's big winner Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Fortunately, Ongais broke and was unable to run in the semifinals so Gene was reinstated. He was unable to capitalize on it, when he was started leaking oil and was shut off on the line, giving Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" a single into the final. A week later, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track wasn't great for the high horsepower cars and Snow qualified #5 with a 7.61. A 7.68/202 in the first round, beat Lew Arrington's quicker 7.61. In the second round, a 7.40 beat a tire smoking Ongais, and in the semifinals, a 7.30/200 beat Ken Safford's 7.47 in the Mr. Norm car. In the final, he ran the car that flew here the year before, the "Hawaiian" with Larry Reyes behind the wheel. Gene lost this one, with his 7.83/184.42 finishing runner-up to Reyes' 7.55/196. He ran at Lions on March 8 for the AHRA Grand American where he won his first two rounds with runs of 7.32 and 7.26, but in the semifinals his reverser failed after his burnout and he had to shut off in his race against Don Prudhomme. At the Dallas season opener on March 15, he beat Bobby Steakley with a 7.44/197.36, but then lost in his next race. Then Gene began he hit his stride. He won a best of three match race at Amarillo against Reyes. Times were not the greatest, but he won all three races with 7.84, 7.89, and 7.92 ETs. He then went to Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he won with a final round 7.14 (Low ET) at only 168.53 over Jay Howell. He ran a strong 7.16/186.72 while beating Prudhomme in the semifinal. At the NHRA Division 4 Opener at Dallas, Gene didn't win as he had mechanical issues, but he did set both ends of the NHRA record to 7.23/208.81. Snow ran faster, setting Top Speed of the meet with a 212.76, but he didn't run fast enough to back it up for the record. He also made the final at the next AHRA Grand American race at Frontier International. Snow actually lost to Leroy Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals when Leroy's 7.42/197 beat his 7.77/173, but Goldstein lost a motor on the run and once again Gene was reinstated. In the final, he fouled against Prudhomme. Another runner-up finish came at Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals where his final round 7.56/179.80 lost to Jay Howell's 7.37/180. Early in June, he was at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals. He dominated the Funny Car program running a 7.61/192.16 in the first round, over Jerry Jokerst. A second round 7.39/203.61 beat Goldstein's 7.63/175, while in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 7.34/196.92 to beat Clyde Morgan's 7.52 in Dick Harrell's second Camaro. In the final, his 7.35/205.00 (Top Speed) took the victory over Fritz Callier's 7.77/187. He almost doubled up the following week at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals. Snow qualified #3 with a 7.22/209.79. He worked his way into the final by running a 7.19 in round one, a 7.20/207.37 in round two over Mike Snively's 7.38/199 in Jim Annin's Challenger, and a 7.09/211.76 in the semifinal while stopping Prudhomme's 7.64/166. He met up with Goldstein in the final, and the "Ramchargers" driver laid down a 7.03 (Low ET) at 208 to take the victory against Gene's 7.56/148.51. He wasn't down for long as two days later, he scored a victory over an eight-car field at Kansas International. There he beat Bobby Wood in the first round, with a 7.40/189.86 while another 7.40 at 197.36 beat Dale Pulde's 7.54/183 in the semifinals. He reset the track speed mark in the final with a 7.21/200.88 that won the race over Larry Arnold's 7.53/177. On June 24, he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Oklahoma City. Snow qualified #1 in the eight-car field with a 7.81 and in the final ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.35/207.36 on a single since Mart Higginbotham lost fire on the line. He faced off against Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster" on June 28 at Southland Dragway. Gene won the first race while setting a track ET record of 7.29 at 204.54 over Rowe's 7.83/170. Bobby came back to win the second race with his 7.49/196 beating the "Snowman's" 7.56/200. Gene won the match when he won the third race with a 7.34/201 over Bobby, who fouled with a 7.73/170. It was Gene who fouled in the first round, at Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 11. He was running Prudhomme and he fouled away a 7.15/187.50 while the "Snake" got the win with a 7.45/185. Another win came at the first running of the NHRA Summernationals. Only nine cars showed and Snow ran 7.23/211.26 to qualify first. He got the "bye run" in the first round, and ran 7.34. In round his 7.32/207 beat Bruce Larson while in the semifinals, he got serious and set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.20/214.24 to take out Phil Castronovo. In the final, he ran Vic Brown driving Gary Richards' "Black Shadow" Mustang. A final 7.27/210.77 wrapped up the win over Vic's 7.47/191. Another win on the AHRA Grand American series came at New England Dragway on August 2. He beat Don Schumacher in the first round, with a 7.09/189.98. He got around Morgan in round two with a fairly easy run, but in the semifinals, he set a bit of history when his 6.95/212.76 was the first six second run by a Funny Car in AHRA competition. On that pass, he beat Howell's 7.20/192. In the final, a Low ET and Top Speed effort of 6.93/213.77 took home the "bucks" over Goldstein. A week later (August 9), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified for the show with a 7.37/191.48. A 7.12/204.54 beat an impressive 7.23/200 from Randy Walls' Chevy-powered car. Unfortunately, while racing eventual winner Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town-Hustler" in the semifinals, he fouled away the Low ET and Top Speed of the meet, a 7.06/210.77. He ended August by winning the AHRA Grand American race at Bristol. Gene qualified #1est with a 7.22/199.54 and waltzed through the field. The field was short and since Snow was the low qualifier, he got the "odd lot" solo in the first round, and ran 7.55. In the second round, a 7.36/203.61 beat Charlie Wilson, and in the semis, his 7.21/202.24 dropped Al Vanderwoude. A track record ET of 7.04 at 205.46 (Top Speed) beat Prudhomme's 7.43/185 in the final. | Best NHRA National Event time for Gene in 1970 was 6.955/213.27.

Notes: Anderson qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.26/260.11. He had problems in the first round against Chuck Etchells and shut off. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.36/294.21 qualified #11. He pulled off a big upset in the first round when both he and John Force smoked their tires. Randy recovered first, and his 5.96/190.83 beat Force's 6.23/222. In round two, he pulled off another upset where his 5.04/308.11 defeated Cruz Pedregon's 5.23/285. I'm sure that put a smile back on Force's face!. In the semi-final, Anderson lost to eventual winner Etchells. Gainesville was his next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. Randy qualified #5 at 4.96/272.64. Jim Dunn replaced Larry Frazier as tuner.

Notes: Billy was still running his Camaro when he showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. In March, he was driving his new Arrow at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #6 with a 6.36/235. He broke an engine in the first round, but his 6.37/221 still beat Pat Foster's 6.39/230 in Joe Pisano's Firebird. A new Milodon was installed for round two, and he blew the oil pan off while running a 6.91/192 that advanced over Tim Kushi's troubled 13.51. In the semifinals, he singled with a 9.32 when Gordie Bonin failed to fire. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. This would not be easy as Pulde had been running steady 6.3s. Sure enough, Dale prevailed with a 6.42/234 over Meyer's runner-up effort of 6.52/213.77. Still, not too bad for a new car. The following week (March 19), he won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace. He qualified #2 with a 6.56/214.79 behind Tripp Shumake's 6.52/207. Meyer set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.28 that beat Raymond Beadle, who smoked the tires in the "Blue Max." His 6.37/221.67 took out Tom Prock's off-pace 7.18/147 in the "Detroit Tiger" in the semifinal. He stopped Tom Hoover's 6.81/204 in the final with a 6.71/218.44. Early in April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.21/221.67. Unfortunately, the car broke on the run, and he could not run in eliminations. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division Four race. His 6.34/214.79 qualified #4. He improved to 6.25/226.13 in the opening round to defeat Larry Brown. The car broke a rod in the semifinal while doing a burnout to prepare for its race against Billy Graham. Meyer was at OCIR later in April for its enormous 64 Funny Car show. He lasted until round two before losing to Ed McCulloch.Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of the month (April 30). It was an eight-car show, and Meyer qualified #6 with a 6.50/222.22. In the first round, his 6.60/229.00 fell to Hoover's 6.52/226. Billy was at Cayuga in May for the NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.45 (Low ET). He then beat Rick Johnson in the opening round with a 6.54/209.79. In round two, he got a solo as both Roy Harris and Ron Colson both had broken in their first-round match. In the final, he faced Al Segrini, and the two had a great race that saw Al's 6.56/222 beat Billy's slightly quicker 6.55/227.84 (Top Speed). Edgewater hosted an eight-car show that was to have all eight cars make three runs, with the two Low ET cars coming back to run for the final. In Billy's first race, his 6.40 beat Dale Creasy. In the second race, his 6.41 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. He ran his best time in the third race, a 6.32, but he still lost to Denny Savage's 6.19. Meyer did not run quick enough to reach the final. He qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.32/230.17, and in the first round, his 6.40/209.30 advanced when Denny Savage shut down early with problems. But in round two, Meyer had troubles and shut down to an 8.10/113.78 loss to Tom McEwen's 6.25/215. At the beginning of the year, Meyer had switched from the KB engines he had used in '77 to Milodon engines for '78. But around the beginning of July, he ordered four new KB engines to replace the Milodon motors he had been running. Delivery was to take eight to ten weeks. He was at Byron for its Manufacturer's race, where his 6.47/218.44 beat Bill Pryor in round one. But although he set Low ET and Top Speed in his next round race against McEwen, his 6.31/238.72 lost to Tom's 6.33/214. He really qualified well at Englishtown, where a 6.060/236.84 got him the #2 spot in the field, but he was upset by Segrini in the first round. | The 6.060 was his best NHRA ET for this year, and a 241.93 at the World Finals was his best NHRA speed. Billy ran 5.99 at New England in August. Did he also run a 5.97 somewhere this year?

Notes: After a great '76 season, Burgin was hoping for more success in '77. He debuted his new Monza at Fremont on January 1 for the Sixth Annual Nitro Bowl. He had handling problems in the first round, but he still won his race. Burgin was lined up against Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" for their second-round race when it started to rain, and the race was canceled. Gary qualified #7 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But he was back in the Mustang II (thanks, Joe Moore). He beat Dale Pulde in the second round to face Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Burgin had trouble, and his new Monza caught fire on the line while eventual winner Prudhomme headed for the final with a 6.29/216 solo. The damage was lite, and Gary showed at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5. In the second round, he got out of shape and lost to Gordie Bonin. In May, he won the Olympics of Drag Racing event, beating Prudhomme in the final with a 6.17/233.16. At Columbus, Ohio, for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified on the pole with a 6.10/236.84 (Low ET and Top Speed). Unfortunately, he lost to Bonin in the first round. He was runner-up to Tom Hoover at a Memorial Weekend Funny Car race at Martin, Mich. Gary qualified #3 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.17/234.98. He lost to Hoover in the second round when he smoked the tires and shut off. A week later (July 24), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. It was good to see him back on the IHRA tour as he hadn't run any IHRA events in '77 up until Milan. Gary must have been glad to be back as well as he won the race and set a new IHRA record of 6.08. He qualified #3 with a 6.28 in the eight-car field. In the first round, Burgin beat Jim Pryor in Jim Naramore's car, then stepped up to a 6.13 in the semifinals to beat Tom McEwen's quicker 6.11. In the final, he took the victory with his 6.08 beating Dale Pulde's right there 6.09. On August 4, he was back at Englishtown for its Funny Car Race of Champions event. All cars ran two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gary won his first race with a 6.43/218 that was Low ET of the first-round over Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." But in the second race, he fouled and shut off. Two other cars bettered his 6.43, and Burgin failed to reach the final. He was up North in Canada a few days later, on August 7, for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.31/230.76 qualified #3. He advanced past the first-round with a solo 6.30 when Tim Kushi's Vega failed to fire, but in the second round, he had a fuel pump break, and he lost to Prudhomme. Another win came a week later, on August 14, at Martin, Michigan's US 131 for the PHR Championships. All cars ran the first-round race with the eight lowest ETs regardless of winning or losing, advancing into round two. Gary's first-round 6.44 lost to Ron Colson's 6.40 in the "Hawaiian," but his ET qualified for the show. In the second round, he ran 6.18 to beat Prudhomme, and in the semifinals, a 6.23/234 beat recent Grandnationals winner Tom Hoover. In the final, he grabbed the victory when Pulde had problems and slowed to a 15.22 while Gary ran 6.61/231.36 to win. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, almost 40 cars fought for the sixteen spots available. Burgin qualified #2 behind Prudhomme with a 6.07/238.09. In the first round, he set Low ET of the meet with a 6.02 at 237, beating John Lombardo's 6.59. In round two, a 6.08/236 beat Tom McEwen's 6.24/233. But he was not going to repeat as the winner when in the semifinals, his parachute deployed on his run and his 'chute pulling 8.18/92 lost to Richard Rogers' 6.54/216 in Jim Green's "Green Elephant." That was a tough loss. Gary did not attend the NHRA Fallnationals, but he was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, where he qualified on the pole with a 6.04/241.93 (Low ET and Top Speed), but he lost early. As the season was coming to a close, he won the Governor's Cup Funny Car race at Sacramento over Ed McCulloch, with his 6.20 winning over the "Ace's" 6.25.

Notes: Ray qualified #11 at NHRA Gainesville at 6.62/225.56. In round one, he lost to Raymond Beadle, 6.85/220 to 7.80/140.84. He was the ninth alternate at NHRA Columbus (times unavailable). He qualified #6 at Englishtown at 6.26/236.84 and best Dale Pulde in round one, 6.33/217 to 6.46/234. R.C. beat Tom McEwen in round two, 6.90 to 7.45 (speeds unavailable). Billy Meyer ended his day in the semis, 6.66/193 to 9.98. Ray was the 11th alternate at Indy at 6.432/226.70. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. R.C. also ran 6.42 at Warner Robins, GA. Where did the team run 6.12/241.93?

Notes: Beautiful car. Despite stock stroke motor, set Top Speed everywhere it went. Photo from Gainesville, FL-1978. | After a great '77 season, the '78 season was very humbling to Dale Pulde and Mike Hamby. They purchased a new car just because of all the runs they put on their last one. The car came from Plueger and he had changed his chassis jig so that the engine sat higher and the frame was narrower. According to Pulde, “he never liked this car.” It was very hard on parts. Pulde had also purchased 200 sets of bad oil rings from a manufacturer that were killing the cylinder walls. Despite the setbacks, he did win his first NHRA National event this season. Their season started badly when they failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But things turned for the better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Dale ran 6.29/241.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. An opening round 6.35/224.43 beat Tom Hoover and in round two his 6.37/234.37 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.44. Another 6.37 at 236.84 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.54/212 in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final and Dale picked up his first NHRA victory with a 6.42/234.37 over Meyer's 6.52/213. Hamby claimed that they "never had the valve covers off" after the win. It looked like it was the start of a great season when they went to Darlington the following week (March 19) for the IHRA Winternationals and won that too. The track was bad and Dale's 6.88/221.67 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. A 6.49/224 in the first round, beat Les Cassidy while a semifinal 6.44/228.42 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.97/208 in the "Trojan Horse.” He ran alternate Frank Oglesby in the final and won easily with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.35/229.00. The team then went to Seattle in April for its opening race of '78 and won that too. A final round 6.49 beat Tommy Ivo's 6.64. Pulde also set Top Speed at 231. The next day he won the Portland Opener. Once again, it was Pulde against Ivo and this time they both smoked the tires, but Pulde's 6.96 beat Ivo's 7.23. Earlier, Dale had set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.38/233. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.35/233. A first-round 6.59/223 beat Murf McKinney and in round two, his 6.49 advanced when Jimmy King fouled. He soloed with a tire-smoking 11.27/79 in the semifinals when Dennis Lockaby failed to show. But in the final, Dale had problems and shut off against Denny Savage who went on to win with a 7.12/223. In May, the "War Eagle" was at Blaney for a four-car show. Dale ran 6.48 and 6.45/217.06 (Low ET and Top Speed) while beating Shirl Greer and Fullerton. He was declared the winner of the event. On May 21, the team was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.32, but he was upset in the first round, when Savage's 6.26 beat his 6.35. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/232.56 qualified #11, but Dale fouled against Gary Burgin in the first round. The following week (June 18) found the team at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #7 with a 6.51, but picked up to a 6.33/231.95 in the first round, to beat Larry Gould's SOHC-Ford powered car. A solo 6.53 advanced in round two when Roger Lindamood broke on the line. But once again, it was Savage who stopped Pulde in the semifinals with a 6.11 to Dale's 6.32. Early in July, Pulde was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.72 lost to Fullerton's 6.75. The team was down after not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. That was followed up by a so-so performance at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. Dale’s 6.40 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.69/200.04 lost to Lindamood's 6.64/213. Another surprise was the team's failure to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The team rebounded by winning the IHRA US Open at Rockingham on August 20. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.46 and then he beat Lindamood and Pete Miner (with a 6.48) to reach the final against Pete Williams in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Dale got out first in the final and his 6.52/235.60 (Top Speed) beat Williams' 6.51. | Best NHRA times of 6.198 at Indy and 241.93 at the Gators. Twice ran 6.29 as well. Did Dale go 6.15/247 somewhere this year?

Notes: In Jan '84, Gary was at Firebird's Drag Racing Superbowl. He ran 5.99/252.10 to become the first driver over 250 at Firebird. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 at a stout 5.925/254.95, but a first-round 6.57 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.21 in the "Blue Max," but both cars were disqualified. Southern crossed the centerline, and Beadle hit the wall! Mark Oswald had the resultant bye run in round two. The team attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.255/234.37 best was good for the fifth alternate. The team's next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There were only seventeen cars on hand for the sixteen-car field, so Gary didn't have to push too hard in qualifying, running 6.33 for the "bump" spot. He lost to Beadle in the opening round of eliminations. At NHRA Atlanta, he also ran 6.338/229.59, but that was only good for the #e alternate slot. At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, now run in May, he failed to qualify in the eight-car field with a 6.07 best. The bump was a 6.03. After qualifying ended, Gary made another pass and ran 5.86/251. Southern was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May. He qualified on the bump spot at 6.138/241.28, but eventual winner Billy Meyer's 5.88/248 beat Gary's 6.200/248.61 in the first round. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals and qualified #3 with a career-best(to this point),5.81 at 248. He broke against Al Segrini in the first round. He also lost early at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He qualified #10 with a 6.34 before losing to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Surprisingly, the team failed to qualify for the eight-car field at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 5.996/250.00 qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Tim Grose fouled against him in the first round, and Gary advanced with a 6.123/243.90. In round two, his 6.075/247.93 lost to eventual winner Mark Oswald's 5.85/243 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. The NHRA Summenationals at Englishtown were a disappointment as Gary failed to qualify, ending up as the first alternate with a 6.052/253.52. Gary also finished one slot outside the field in Brainerd with a 6.075/249.30 effort. The team had a rough outing at Indy, finishing as the last non-qualifier with a 6.312/246.57. The car always had the power. Where did the 5.73/259 numbers occur? We remember them but not the track or year. We need confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. | At the beginning of '84, Jeb Allen helped with the clutch, and his name was on the back quarter panel for a short time. I saw the 604 number at the Winternationals and thought it was Kenney Goodell. The announcer said Dunlap had 500 gallons of nitro and several motors. Gary Southern's last go in this car was at the Oct. 5th FC show at Carlsbad; saw it myself. ND-covered meet. In eliminations GS ran an rnon-and-off 6.64/233. Don't recall the other lane, rn'Goose/Grose, all Corvette Final. He drove the Dave Korzan Corvette at the Finals. - Joe Moore

Notes: Beadle started the '84 season at the NHRA Winternationals, where he smacked the guardrail while beating Gary Southern in the first round with a 6.21. He could not make the second round due to damage to the car. Things improved at the Gatornationals, where he qualified for #8 with a 5.88/253.52. A first-round 6.04/202.70 beat Jim White's 6.12/233, and in round two, he shut down to a winning 8.34/109.35 when Tom McEwen broke. In the semifinals, he faced Kenny Bernstein and unfortunately smoked the tires, losing to Kenny's 5.79/256. He qualified #8 at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals with a 6.01 but lost early. In April, the team was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Raymond ran 5.92 to qualify #11. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. On May 6, Raymond qualified #3 at Rockingham with a career-best (to this point) 5.77/258.52 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lasted until round two before his tire-smoking, 7.24/128 lost to Jim Head's 6.09/250. He also smoked the tires in a first-round loss to Al Segrini at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bristol was the next stop for the team for the IHRA Springnationals. Beadle's 5.89/250 qualified #6, and his 5.95/249.30 advanced over a fouling Paul Smith in the "Custom Body" car in the first round. He and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car had a great race in round two that saw Oswald's 5.82/254 get the better of the "Max's" 5.89/252.10. They were at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships shortly after. A 5.96 qualified #4 in the sixteen-car field, and Beadle lasted until round two before his off-pace 6.50 lost to Smith's 5.99. Beadle had won the '83 NHRA Springnationals and hoped to repeat in '84. He started by qualifying #8 at Columbus with a 5.94/248.61. An opening round 5.97/238.09 beat Head's 6.07/243, and in round two, a 5.93/247.25 took out Sherm Gunn's 6.28/191. But his repeat chances were over in the semifinal when Beadle's 5.96/241.93 lost to eventual winner Oswald's 5.89/242. Things didn't go so well in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.93/251.39 but lost to eventual winner Billy Meyer in the opening round. The following week (July 8) saw more of the same. They were in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Raymond's 5.79/259.36 qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field. But in round one, a sheared fuel pump ended their chances of advancing. But after a couple of weeks of lows came the highs. Beadle won for the first time in thirteen months at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A lot of racer's luck helped out in this win, but it was still a win. He had only qualified #11 with a 5.87/247.93. Don Prudhomme had a blower explode in the opening round of eliminations, and Beadle advanced with a 6.58. Tim Grose smoked the tires in the second round, and a 5.92/249.30 advanced the "Max." He was to face Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, but the "Budweiser King" broke a reverser after its burnout, and Beadle singled into the final with a 5.93/250.00. He went up against Meyer in the final, and his 5.95/247.93 took the victory over Billy's 5.97/248. Then came a stop at Dragway 42 for the ADRA's first race, the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field. Beadle qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal before his blower exploded on a 6.53 pass that lost to eventual winner Jim White. His best times there were 5.92/244. Raymond sure didn't have to wait long before scoring his next NHRA victory, as it came at the next NHRA event, the Mile High Nationals in Denver. He qualified #2 with a 5.92/233.76 and then set a 5.90 track record during eliminations. He beat Prudhomme in the semifinal and then went up against Frank Hawley, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for the title. Hawley fouled, and Beadle ran 5.93/248.61 (speed was a track record) for the victory. At the IHRA Summernationals, held at Edgewater, he qualified #3, then during eliminations, he set Low ET at 5.78 but lost to Oswald in the semifinal. After running so well, the team had to be disappointed at Brainerd. Beadle "only" qualified #12 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, and he lost to Dale Pulde in the opening round. Raymond's best NHRA times of 5.750 at Indy and 257.14 at Atlanta. We formerly listed 5.735 but are removing that until we get confirmation. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984.

Notes: Cruz Pedregon started the NHRA season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 4.935/307.06. An opening round 5.08/296.06 beat Gary Densham, and in round two, his 5.12/299.10 took out Dale Pulde. He faced John Force in the semifinals, and Cruz smoked the tires and lost to John's 5.25/298. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.17 qualified #4, but he fouled against Kenji Okazaki in the first round. Only sixteen cars showed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, so qualifying wasn't an issue - Pedregon's 5.16/300.30 got him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.21/268.89, followed by a second round 5.11/297.02 that advanced over a fouling Al Hofmann. But in the semifinals, he and Force had a good race that saw Force's 5.08/300 outrun Cruz's 5.13/301.30.

Notes: Al was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals in March. He qualified on the "bump" with a 6.45. His opponent, Kenny Bernstein, got out of shape in the first round, and Segrini advanced. Unfortunately, Al's engine was ailing, and he could not run eventual winner Gordie Bonin in round two. He won the New England Spring Funny Car Championships in May, running a best of 6.05/231. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.127 (Low ET) at 234.37. A first-round 6.16/230.76 beat Bonin's 6.58/187. He continued to run well in round two, with his 6.20/226.70 beating Don Prudhomme's 6.31/222. He had a small fire on the line in the semifinals and had to shut down, advancing eventual winner Gary Burgin. Englishtown was a stop that he would rather forget. He was there for the NHRA Summernationals. He had made a qualifying pass and stopped the car. He attempted to shut the engine down, but it wouldn't shut off. Oil got onto the headers, and the car caught fire. Al bailed out, and the car started idling down the track on fire. No worry, the concrete retaining wall was easily able to stop this flaming mess. It did. The car was then rebuilt and stolen the day after. Not sure if it was recovered, but Segrini was driving for Castronovo at the NHRA Grandnationals. Segrini qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.21/229.59. An opening round 6.19 beat Bernstein's 6.25, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a losing 6.86 while Dale Pulde's 6.72 in the "War Eagle" advanced into the final. He won the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Al set Low ET at 6.15 and a troubled 7.22/189.87 in the final beat an even more troubled Roy Harris at 9.50-78. Segrini went to Indy with high hopes for running well at the NHRA US Nationals. But he made a dozen passes attempting to qualify, with the best being a 6.14/234.98 (second alternate). The problem was traced to two bad fuel pumps. Shortly after this, he won the New England Funny Car Nationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.00/238.71 and a 6.11/235 beat Bruce Larson in the final. He scored another big win at the IHRA Nationals at the end of September. There, he stopped Burgin in the final. His next stop was at Atco for their Funny Car Spectacular. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, Segrini beat R.C. Sherman with a 6.45/217.39. But in the semifinals, he shut down to 9.77/84.58 in a loss to Harris' 6.71/212. AKA Utica Flash. Al ran 6.127/234.98 for best NHRA national event times.

Notes: Tom McEwen was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified on the "bump", but lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in the first round. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.30/231.95 qualified #7 and he beat alternate John Force in the opening round with a 6.31/232.55. In the second round, he lost a motor and the race to Hoover. He then went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 race where he got back at Hoover by beating him in the final for the victory. The rain delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals only had an eight-car field. Tom ran 6.46/227.27 to get the last spot in the show, but a first-round 6.43/224.43 lost to Force's 6.40/223. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where his 6.49 qualified #3 in another eight-car show. He beat John Collins before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinal. Next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.31/220.58 qualified #15 and a 6.53/214.28 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.41/233 in the first round. He followed that up with a runner-up finish at the North American Grand Nationals at Detroit. A strong 6.22/217 beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" in round two and a 6.50 beat Len Imbrogno in the semifinal. But a blown engine in the final slowed him to a 7.14/146 that lost to John Pott's 6.66 in the "Mr. Norm" car. On June 24, McEwen was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. He reset the AHRA Funny Car record to 6.08 at 240.00 in the first round, and a semifinal 6.12/236.22 beat low qualifier Johnny White. He faced Hoover in the final who had also been running well and had reset the AHRA speed record to 242. The two both had problems - Hoover shut off and McEwen won with an 8.00. Hoover and McEwen raced against each other quite a bit in '79 and early in July, the two met for a best of three match race at Houston. McEwen won two straight. The first-round saw his 6.36/209.30 beat Hoover's 6.49/178 and a motor blowing 6.41/209.30 won again. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Tom qualified #10 with a 6.23/223.32 and he set Low ET of the first-round with a 6.15 that beat Roy Harris. But he hurt his crank on the run and was unable to show for his second round race against Tripp Shumake. Early in August, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and in the semifinal, set Low ET with a 6.21 to beat Collins. He met Tom Hovland in the final and he overpowered the track, smoking the tires to a 6.72 in a runner-up finish to Hovland's 6.36. Another win came his way at the AHRA World Finals on August 19. There he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals before setting a track record 6.15 at 223.88 in the final to beat a troubled Gordie Bonin at 13.08. He almost got into the "fives" at Indy for the NHRA U. S. Nationals. His 6.01/238.72 qualified #4. McEwen had scored an emotional victory here the year before and was hoping to repeat. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.21/234 lost to eventual winner Bonin’s 6.16/240. He then made the trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. His 6.18/238.72 qualified #8, but in the opening round both he and opponent Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's car ran 6.24 (McEwen at 238.72 again), but Ridings got the win light. The NHRA season came to an end at Ontario Motor Speedway for the World Finals. McEwen qualified #3 with a 6.24/230.76 and a 6.53/229.59 beat former "Hot Wheels" teammate Don Prudhomme's 6.85/229 in the opening round. But in round two, his 6.57/225.56 fell to Ron Colson's 6.35/236 in the "Hawaiian.” McEwen finished tenth in the NHRA season long points standings. | Where was the 243 run?

Notes: This was one of the first five funny's to top 200 mph. Making a lot of horsepower to push that big frontal area to those speeds. Sid debuted this car for some test runs at Memphis on August 17. The car had just been finished earlier that week. With some old slicks on the car the ET's weren't the best, but on the second pass he ran 174 and on his last of three runs he turned 179.64. This was on a 184 track record. Best et in '68 was a 7.51. Confirmed 7.76 Jackson Sid raced at an eight-car show at New York on October 13. He singled in the first round, when Ken Poffenberger failed to fire, and another single run of 7.88 got him into the final when Al Hanna was unable to show. In the final, a 7.89 finished second best to Henry Garcia's 7.73 in the Car Shop Camaro. - RH | Photo from the '68 OCIR mfg. meet. Ran 7.80s.

Notes: In Jan, Johnson was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.83/245.23. He was up against Paul Smith driving Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the first round. Rick went into some hard tire shake and shut off. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRL Kansas City International Raceway 8/85.

Notes: First Funny Car in the 5.20s with a 5.255 at Ennis IHRA 1988, followed by a quicker 5.230. Photo from Columbus 1988. Best NHRA times of 5.252 at Houston Fall 1988 and 277.26 at Maple Grove 9/88. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing that featured an eight-car Funny Car show. McCulloch qualified #2 with a 5.56/261.62 behind John Force's 5.34. These two would end up meeting in the final. The "Ace" got there by first beating Ron Fassl with a 5.60/260.86 and in the semifinals, a 5.73/255.68 got around a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. John was running two tenths quicker with 5.40 and 5.41 times. In the final, it was a foregone conclusion. John beat Ed's 5.73/204.08 with a 5.47/267 to take the title. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.39 (Low ET) got the pole, but in the first round, the "Ace" smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a first-round 5.69/256.41 beat a tire smoking Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but in the semifinals against Tripp Shumake, the Cutlass broke on the line. A week later (March 20) he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It was a weekend he would rather forget as he failed to qualify and was only third alternate for the show. How things change in a week, as on March 27 he was low qualifier with a 5.54/258.62 at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.75 lost to Scott Kalitta's holeshot 5.77.

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight cars. But at one time, he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of fuel funny cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Bros. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides-built cars, including a front-hinge flip-top funny car. - BS | Don Schumacher really started to run well when crew chief John Hogan came on board in July. Things didn't start so well when Don drove the car into the ditch during the Super Stock Nationals, and the team showed up at Detroit on July 26 with the front of the car wearing primer. A blown transmission on a warm-up run was followed by an off-pace 8.90 in the opening round of the eight-car show that lost to Bruce Larson. The next day (July 26), Detroit ran them again, only now they expanded the field to twelve cars. In the first round, Don's 7.82/182.18 beat Bob Fulp in the "Limefire." He got to solo in round two and made an easy 13.02 pass. In the semi-final, he had trouble and shut down to 11.73/78 in a loss to Larson's 8.27/166. Sunday was the last day for the three-day event at Detroit, and this time Schumacher went all the way. An off-pace 8.42/170.77 defeated Fulp's equally troubled 8.46/172 in the first round. In the second round, his 7.89/181.80 took out Mike Burkhart's 7.91/153. He got some revenge over Larson in the semi-final by running 7.78/183 over Bruce's 7.79/182. In the final, he faced Kelly Chadwick, and his 7.93/184.42 got the victory over Chadwick's 8.27/145.

Notes: Larry was at Lions on January 28 for the second half of its Winternationals. Fullerton's 9.27/138.03 qualified for the 32 car show. He lost to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round of eliminations. He was at Lions on June 29 for a double Funny Car show. There were two eight-car fields, with those that didn't qualify quick enough for the first eight fell into a second eight-car field. Fullerton failed to qualify for the quick eight and well as the second eight. He did get into the show as an alternate, but his 9.52/122.95 lost to Gene Modlin's 9.36/129. On August 3, he was at Irwindale for its Gold Cup Championships. He fouled against eventual winner Gas Ronda in the first round and shut off to 10.30-99.53. As far as I know, Fullerton ran SOHC Ford's in his cars until his Maverick switched to an early Hemi in Mid-'70. Larry ran 8.46 at Irwindale.

Notes: Tom was on top of his game in 1968; his best time of 7.52 set early in the year would have been a lot lower if the car had not been totaled in a crash at Virginia Beach, the same place he had run his Top Speed of 202 in May. But in June he had just finished running 201 and his chute failed to release. He hit the brakes hard until the master cylinder let go. Grove ended up skidding sideways into a tree and demolishing the Mustang. He finished out the season with his 1967 car. Before the crash, he had beaten the best. On April 7, he had a hiccup at Kingston where he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super 'Cuda" in a best of three match. Reyes won their first race with an 8.12/187 when Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand. There had never been a 7-second Funny Car run at Kingston until their second race when both ran sevens. Grove's 7.99/187.50 prevailed over Reyes' quicker 7.98. In the final race, Larry got the holeshot and his 8.10 went on to win the match over Grove's quicker 7.98. On April 14 he beat Don Nicholson in a best of three match. Another match race victory came at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 3. There he stopped Arnie Beswick three straight. His times were 5.15/148.50 over a fouling Beswick, followed by a track record 5.05/150 and a 5.35/140. He was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational, but after the first-round it was rained out. He had run 8.63/184.42 (Top Speed) in a first-round solo, and he was Aquasco's track mph record holder at 187.88. Tom won the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18. He ran 7.79/189.06 over Roger Lindamood (8.10/179), and in the semifinals, he reset both ends of the track record with a 7.64/194.38 over Roy Gay who shut off. In the final, a 7.65/192.70 stopped Jim Liberman's 7.85/182. On June 8, he beat the "Hemi-Cuda" of Fred Goeske three straight at Capitol. In the first race, his 7.71 at a new track record speed of 196.92 beat Goeske's 7.96/170. The speed was 5 mph faster than the old track record. Tommy got the ET record as well in their second race with his 7.64 at 190.66 beating the 'Cuda's 7.99/178. A final 7.76/196.92 finished up the match. He ran his lowest ET of the year at a match race at Cecil County against Liberman on June 19. He beat Jim in the first race with a track record 7.52 at 197.36. In the second race, a 7.81/193.12 did the deed, winning the match. - Ron Howard

Notes: Jim showed up at Columbus driving this Cutlass rather than the Daytona-bodied car he had been running in the first half of the season. He had many problems, and his 7.84/117.89 best failed to qualify. Epler then went to Topeka for the NHRA Western Nationals, where although he improved to 5.75/263.15, he still failed (third alternate)to qualify. He debuted a new McKinney-built Cutlass at the NHRA Mile High Nationals, where his 5.49/241.15 qualified #5. He fell off to 5.68/215.82 in the first round in a loss to Bruce Nilsen's 5.56/257. He did not race at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, but he was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.17/287.44. An easy 6.57/134.77 advanced in the first round when Gordon Mineo broke. In the second round, his 5.22/247.11 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.20/287. He skipped going to Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. Jim's 5.25/291.54 (Top Speed) qualified #7. He improved to 5.23/263.85 over Paul Smith's 5.32/261 in the first round. Freddie Neely fouled against him in round two, and Jim took it easy at 7.38/117.61. In the semi-final, his 5.22/291.26 lost to Kenji Okazaki's 5.19/270. Maple Grove was the next stop on the NHRA tour, and Epler qualified #6 for the Keystone Nationals with a 5.22/279.06. In round one, his 5.29 fell to Cruz Pedregon's 5.24. First funny car over 300 MPH and ninth member of the Slick 50 300 MPH Club (including Top Fuel) on October 3/1993, with a 300.40 at Topeka, Kan.

Notes: Blown fuel. This car was built late in 1966, probably did not hit the strip until 1967. Alley ran this same chassis through 1970 with Cudas replacing the Charger, and a Duster replacing the Cuda bodies.

Notes: The 1969 Chi-Town Hustler Dodge Charger was legendary for its long smoking burnouts and tough performance. The team claimed that the car had a 90 percent win-loss record in 1969. Minick did the driving, Austin Coil tuned the engine, and John Farkonas was the behind-the-scenes engineer. The car was built with an offset roll cage for the driver, one of the last funny cars built in that configuration. The Hustler ran a best of 6.96 in 1970 and ran 206 in 1969. US 30 ad claimed a 6.99/219 in 1970. Previously listed 198.23 in 1970. As tough as the car was in 1969, it became outdated by 1971, and a new car had to be built. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com). | A drag racing magazine dated from '70 (due to magazine lead time) claimed that by early '70, Minick had run a best ET of 7.02. The car used a homemade 120" chassis with a 1,600 hp 426 Hemi. American Racing Engines got the credit for building the motor. It used M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons along with an Engle cam. American Racing did the heads as well as the crankshaft. The transmission was a TorqueFlite, and the rear axle ratio was 3.54. The Charger body came from Fiberglass Ltd. | The "Chi-Town Hustler" team started the '70 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. The race featured six Funny Car's running round-robin style. Pat won all three of his races, first getting around a broken Kip Brundage in the "Parts Mart" Camaro with a 7.48/194.80 and then another 7.48 in a solo after Don Schumacher had blown a rear end in his first race and was unable to repair. In his third and final run, Minick really laid one down, running a 7.26/203.60 over a crossed-up Jim Liberman. Minick failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. But he rebounded nicely on February 14, where he competed at Lions. Thirty cars tried to make the eight-car show. Pat not only made the show, but he also won the race with a final round 7.19/204.54 over Don Prudhomme. Earlier, he had beaten Dick Bourgeois in the first round, with a 7.32/201.79 and a 7.37/200.88 beat Liberman in the semifinals. Minick won the Fremont Northern Nationals the next day (February 15). He ran 7.34/200.88 and 7.41/200.88 in the first two rounds before setting Low ET with a 7.18 in the semifinal over Bourgeois' 7.39. In the final, he defeated Liberman's 7.39/200 with a 7.27/205.46. In April, he met Bobby Rowe in the Super Duster for a best two out of three match race at Miami-Hollywood. He beat Rowe in the first two races with times of 7.42/199.55 and 7.38/199.55, but a broken blower drive in the final race kept him from taking a clean sweep. Another match race was run at Capitol on April 17 against Johnny Wright in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. A track record 7.25/199.54 beat Wright in the first race, who fouled on a 7.66/181 run. Minick reset the track record to a 7.19 in his second race and tied the track speed record of 203.60 held by Tommy Grove as Wright fouled again. Johnny got a 7.85/175 win in the final race when Minick's transmission let go. In May, the team traveled way up North to Keystone Dragways near Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he ran a match race against Liberman. Pat beat Jim three straight, setting both ends of the track records with a 7.45/196.92. Shortly after this, the team stopped at Marion, South Dakota, for a best of three match against Marc Susman. Pat won all three races and ran a best of 7.65/188.66. The ET was a new track record. Minick beat Clare Sanders in the final at the UDRA Springnationals. He also won at Epping on June 30 over a 16-car field. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.39/199.10 before running an 8.48/180 in the final to win when Schumacher lost a trans. Pat competed at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car Invitational on July 11, but he fouled away a 7.25/201.34 in the first round. He then won an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat Sanders in the "Super Camaro" in the first round, with a 7.40/194.80, and another 7.40 at 200.00 beat Randy Walls in the semifinal. He saved his best for last when he ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.32/201.46 blast to beat Bryan Teal in Nelson Carter's Charger. Pat won his first race at the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet by out driving Ron Rivero's quicker 7.48 with a 7.52/198.67, but he fouled out in his next two races. On August 2, Minick faced Leonard Hughes in a best two out of three match race at Atco. Pat won two straight with times of 7.44/195.65 and 7.18/199.11 to wrap up the match. The following weekend he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran the first-round, with the eight lowest ET's advancing to the second round. Pat's 7.16/200.44 was the lowest ET in the first round, and he ran 199.11 in the second round over Teal. In the semifinal, he had some luck on his side when Gene Snow fouled away a Low ET and Top Speed 7.06/210.77. Still, Pat's 7.12/185.95 was strong. Larry Arnold lost fire in the final, and Pat motored to a 7.23/199.11 for the victory. Another victory came on August 30 at the Cordova World Series. Pat tied the track record there with a 7.11 Low ET run over Fred Goeske in the semifinals. The next day (August 31), he was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, where he beat Kenny Safford two straight in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Minick's best was a 7.17/218. On September 1, he won an eight-car show at Saginaw. He ran 7.17/204 over Clare Sanders, who lost fire. A 7.23 in the semifinals beat Terry Hedrick's 7.26 in the "Super Shaker." In the final, a 7.13 (Low ET) at 200 took the victory when Connie Kalitta lost a clutch in his Mustang.

Notes: Photo from Pomona, CA 1979. | Tom had a great year in '79, especially the early part of the season. He started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals over Gary Burgin, and then he went to Pomona for NHRA's Winternationals where he qualified #8 with a 6.26/229. He ran 6.24 and 6.18 in the first two rounds on the way to meeting Tripp Shumake in the semifinals. There he ran another 6.24 to beat Tripp. In the final he met low qualifier, Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked his tires and Hoover ran a consistent 6.29/232.55 for the victory. It was his second career NHRA national event win. The following week (February 11), he was at Fremont for the East-West Meet. Hoover's first-round 6.86/139.10 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.37/208, but in the second round, he reset Fremont's ET record with a 6.06 at 230.76 to beat Ed McCulloch. He also backed it up with a 6.09. It was a strong showing for the "Showtime.” He made the finals at the next NHRA event as well, the Gatornationals in March. Tom qualified #3 with a 6.22. He beat Tom McEwen in round two with a 6.56/230 and a 6.50/226 beat a tire smoking Prudhomme in the semifinals. In the final he ran Gordie Bonin and despite Tom's quicker and faster 6.84/227.27 he lost to Bonin's 6.93/224. Also, in March he was runner-up to McEwen at the NHRA Division 4 race at LaPlace. The NHRA Cajun Nationals had an eight-car field and Tom ran 6.38/231.36 to qualify sixth. It was a hard show to make as Billy Meyer, Gene Snow, Shumake, and John Collins among others failed to qualify. A first-round 6.44/223.32 lost to Beadle's 6.37/229. Hoover then ran at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals where he qualified #1 with a track record 6.22 at 232.56. He was upset by Billy Graham in the first round. At the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus, but he qualified well, running 6.15/235.60 for the #3 spot in the field. An opening round 6.33/231.95 advanced when Bob Pickett's Starfire broke, but in round two his 6.40/237.16 lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.35/235. Tom was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals later in June. The Corvette was running strong going 6.19/242.60 (Top Speed) in his first-round win and in the semifinals, he soloed with a 6.21. In the final, he ran McEwen, but Hoover had problems and shut off. Hoover's 242.60 was a new AHRA speed record. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Early in July, he was at Houston for a best of three match race against McEwen. It wasn't Hoover day as he lost two straight running a best of 6.49. He was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Tom qualified #7 with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.23 beat Al Hanna, but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to John Force. Also, in July he finished runner-up to Pete Williams in the "Chi Town Hustler" at the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove. At the US 131 Funny Car Nationals Tom lost in the first round, to Frank Oglesby. At the PHR Championships at US 131 he failed to qualify. He skipped over the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada choosing to race at the AHRA Summernationals at Kansas City instead. Tom qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and lasted until the semifinals where he got crossed up and lost to Tom Hovland. He was upset in the first round, by Doc Halladay at the fourth NHRA Division 5 race at Brainerd. At the AHRA World Finals, he again qualified #1, this time with a 6.30/225. He beat Bill Spevacek in round one, before losing to Bonin in the semifinals. Indy was the next stop for the NHRA |US Nationals. Hoover qualified with a 6.07 and in the first round, his 6.12/241.93 beat Meyer's 6.32. A second round 6.24/234.37 lost to eventual winner Bonin's 6.04/244. Hoover's next stop was Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #7 with a 6.17/240.65. A consistent 6.18/240.00 beat Jim Moore in the first round, but his 6.26/239.36 in round two was no match for Beadle's 6.08/234.
