Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. Also 5.193 National Record at 3/89 Houston Supernationals and 5.172 National Record at Indy 89. | Don's last season driving an FC. He started the year by qualifying #12 with a 5.47/261.39 at the Winternationals at Pomona. In the first round, a 5.50/263.92 lost to Bruce Larson's 5.32/259. At Houston for the Supernationals, he ran a 5.19 (Low ET) at 265.80 to qualify first. He lasted until round two when he smoked the tires and lost to Larson again. He qualified badly at the Gatornationals where a 5.52/261.09 was #15 on the list. He lost to Art Hendy in the first round. At the fourth NHRA event, the Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Don qualified #7 with a 5.50. He beat Scott Kalitta in round one, and a 5.53/252.31 beat R.C. Sherman in round two. But another 5.53/250.62 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.48/263 in the semifinals. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals and another semifinal finish. He qualified #6 with a 5.38/266.74 and beat Sherman in round one, and in round two, a 5.37/268 beat Art Hendey. In the semifinal, he should have won as his 5.39 was better than his opponent Mark Oswald's 5.41. But Oswald got him on the tree. He qualified #1 at the Cajun Nationals with a 5.38/264.55 and ran a first-round solo when Sherman broke. He got one back from Larson in round two when his 5.44/261 beat Larson's 5.50. In the semifinals, both he and Dunn smoked the tires, but Mike got the win. He qualified #1 again at National Trail with a 5.27/272.72 for the Springnationals. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track in the first round, and smoked the tires to a loss against Tom Hoover. The next event was the Grandnationals in Canada. Prudhomme qualified #7 with a 5.57/257.51. In round one, a 5.72/256.99 beat Gary Densham's 5.79/242. He got another one over Larson in round two when Bruce broke. In the semifinals, a strong running Kenny Bernstein beat him with a 5.48/254 to Don's 5.73/231. The NHRA tour was at Englishtown for the ninth race of the season, the Summernationals. Prudhomme set a track record 5.27 in qualifying #1. He was running well, making it into the semifinals against Bernstein before breaking just off the line in their semifinal race. At Denver, for the Mile High Nationals, Don helped save Don Gay Jr. in qualifying. Gay had hit the wall during a qualifying run and was knocked unconscious. The car continued down the track with the now bent in headers lighting the body on fire. It finally rolled to a stop, but one of the pressurized fire bottles exploded, blowing the body into pieces. Gay was still unconscious. Prudhomme had been in the other lane on the run and he came to Gay's aid since he still had his fire suit on. He pulled Gay out of the car. In the actual race, the "Snake" qualified #12 with a 5.89/249.16, but lost to Ed McCulloch in the first round. Things went better at the next event, the California Nationals, where Don took his first win of the year. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.30/276.49. In the first round, another 5.30/268.65 beat Kalitta. In round two a 5.38/268.73 beat Jim White and in the semifinals he beat John Force with a 5.35/268.09. He stayed consistent in the final with a 5.32/272.64 taking the title over Oswald's 5.36/274. Seattle International was the next stop for the Seafair Nationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.33/271.98, but set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.29/271 over Tom Hoover. A second round 5.38/268.33 beat Force, but a semifinal 5.40/263.77 lost to Bernstein's 5.34/276.

Notes: Captured top honors at the famed Manufacturers Meet at Orange County International Raceway, where Johnston ran the lowest elapsed time in class history, 6.72, and, in the final, beat Rich Siroonian in Big John Mazmanian's Barracuda on a holeshot, 6.89 to 6.88. Also, Top Speed at the 1970 Winternationals at 203.61. - Phil Burgess, NHRA | Jake started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals on January 25. He made it into the finals by beating Dick Harrell's 7.92 with a 7.70. In round two, Don Schumacher broke a transmission and the "Max" advanced with a 7.77. He got another break in the semifinals when Gene Snow's car started leaking oil and was shut off on the line. Johnston soloed with a 9.16. In the final he was matched against Tommy Grove's strong Cammer powered Mustang. Jake ran a 7.67/198.23 that finished runner-up to Grove's 7.54/196. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.55/201.34 qualified #3. He lasted until round two where Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car dropped him with a 7.44 to Jake's quicker 7.40/203.61 (Top Speed). On February 15 he was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. A first-round 7.32 beat Dick Bourgeois' 7.42 in Don Cook's Corvette. But in round two he fouled against Jim Liberman. The following week (February 22), he won the third OCIR All-Pro event. Johnston actually lost to Gene Conway's 7.33/200 in the first round, with a quicker 7.28/181.08, but he got back in on the "break rule" as Low ET loser when Dave Beebe broke. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 7.26/170.77 over a fouling Clyde Morgan. In the final, he ran Conway again and a 7.37/189.47 took the win over Gene's quicker 7.35/201. | Best NHRA times were 7.361/201.34. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/70

Notes: This is Don's first Buttera Cuda that made its debut in late 1970 replacing his Ron Scrima built car. This car was originally painted yellow using the same design that was on Don's first Hot Wheels car. Don was low qualifier at the 1970 NHRA Hot Wheels Supernationals with a 7.044/200.00, losing to Richard Tharp in the first round, (Don's Top Fuel car also qualified number 1 with Butch Maas at the wheel). At the 1970 OCIR Manufacturer's Championships Don ran consistent 6 second ETs (6.93/6.91/6.89) and had Top Speed of the meet (217.91 mph) while helping Plymouth win the overall team championship. Don also won the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on 12/12/70, running a track record 6.92 ET at 192.70. This car was painted white with red flames for the start of the 1971 season and ran successfully for almost two years.

Notes: Scott used a 5.40/279.06 to qualify #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.78/218.44 lost to Art Hendey's 5.54/260. He broke through with his first-ever NHRA national event win at the Supernationals on March 5, defeating Bruce Larson in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.32 and set Top Speed at 279.58. Scott was one of 21 Funny Car drivers at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. It was a tough weekend for Scott as he had used up two engines in qualifying. He qualified #4 and then beat R.C. Sherman in round one, with a 5.69/256.71. He defeated a blower-popping Ed McCulloch in the semifinal with a 5.85/241.65. Still, it cost him another engine, and Kalitta never showed up for his race against Tony McCallum in the final. The following weekend (May 29), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.57 qualified #8. He lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to John Martin. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Sprignationals. His 5.50/272.97 qualified #11. In round one, his 5.59/240.32 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.33/272. Notes: This car was literally put together in the pits at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals by Mike Hamby and Dale Pulde. On the car's maiden run, Dale ran 6.10/183. After some adjustments to the spoiler, he came back out and ran 6.01/247. On his first official qualifying pass and third run ever on the car, Pulde blasted it to a 5.91/252.80. On Saturday, he ran an amazing 5.76/263 in the heat of the day (85 degrees). Then during the "Night of Fire," Dale ran 5.69/256.41 to take the pole. Pulde went on to win by beating Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.71/260. He ran 5.68/260 in the second round to beat John Collins. Another 5.69 at 257 beat Kenny's quicker 5.66 (Low ET) at 258 in the semifinal. In the final, he ran Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" broke on the line, and Pulde took the victory. They next towed to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where a 5.97/252.38 qualified #13. He beat Tim Grose in the first round, with a 5.86/251. In the second round, Pulde's tire-smoking 6.56/152.18 lost to Bernstein's 5.74/249. The "High Life Warrior" picked up another win at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. Dale qualified #1 with a 5.66/249.30. A first-round 5.84/236.84 beat Dominic Santucci, and in the semifinals, he beat Joe Amato's 5.98/221 with a 5.70/249.30. In the final, he beat Bernstein with a 5.90/247.25. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue. Still, Dale ran 5.89/253.23 to qualify #12. Ed McCulloch fouled against him in the opening round, and he advanced with a 5.82/248.48. But in round two, he smoked the tires once again and lost to Don Prudhomme. The following week (July 7), he was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He qualified #1, and his 5.78/252 beat Tim Grose's 5.85/233 for yet another victory in the final. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.71/249 qualified #5, and in round one, his 5.78 advanced when Ron Correnti shut off with problems. But in round two, the car went into a wheelstand, and he lost to eventual winner Bernstein. He then went to St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals, and he bagged that one as well, stopping John Pott in the final. He then went to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 by resetting both ends of the track record with a 5.73/251.39. He ran 5.87/238.09 he beat Jim Head in the opening round. A round two 5.83/244.56 beat Rick Johnson's 6.04/229 in the "Hawaiian." Another 5.83 at 245.23 stopped a tire-smoking John Force in the semifinal. Once again, he faced the red and white "Budweiser King" of Bernstein in the final. The two had a great race that saw Pulde's 5.81/250.69 come out second best to Kenny's 5.79/245. | At the NHRA Castrol GTX Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove, Pulde qualified #2 with a 5.612/255.24. He Defeated #10 qualifier Graeme Cowin in round 1 with a 5.651/251.53 & #6 qualifier John Force in round 2 with a 5.722/246.44, but lost to #8 qualifier & eventual winner Tim Grose in the Semis. | Photo from Milan, MI, 1985.

Notes: In January, John started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. His track record 5.34 at 266.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He then made his way to the final by running 5.40/268.85 over Johnny West's 5.93/243 in the "Hawaiian" and 5.41/267.85 in the semi-final when Kenny Bernstein broke. In the final, he faced second qualifier Ed McCulloch, and his 5.47/267.06 got him his first victory of the season. The following week (February 7), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.44/274.13 qualified #5. He best West's 5.98/234 in the opening round with a 5.49/267.22. In round two, he improved to 5.42/272.64 to stop Bruce Larson's 5.58/259. But in the semi-finals, he smoked the tires to a 6.40/168.25 in a loss to eventual winner Dale Pulde who won with a 5.42/269. Shortly after that, he was at Baylands Raceway for its East/West drags. Four FCs were competing in a roundabout race. Force first ran 5.74/241.93 to beat Pulde's wheelstanding 10.84/77. He then ran 5.61/252.80 over West's 5.64/245. These two would come back for the final, and Force won with a track record 5.51 at 248.61 over West's 5.82/221. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified second to Tripp Shumake. A 5.40 (Low ET) at 268.85 advanced in round one when Scott Kalitta broke. Bernstein shut down just after leaving the line against him in the semi-final, and John won with a 5.45/267.06. He faced Shumake in the final, and he fouled. His 5.98/249.30 lost to Tripp's 11.10-96. The following week, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. In the future, Force would often win there. But back in '88, he was still getting his feet wet. He ran 5.40/265.64 and 5.36/270.02 in qualifying. The 5.36 gave him the pole. In the first round, the transmission failed, and he lost to Tom Hoover's 7.66/118. The rain-delayed IHRA Supernationals was run at DeSoto at the end of March. In the first round, his 5.64 beat Shumake's 5.69, but the car broke against Kalitta in the semi-final. He had qualified second at the Texas Motorplex for the IHRA Texas Nationals with a 5.32/279.50, but the race was rained out, and he could not return as IHRA ran it the same day as the Bakersfield March Meet. This race was now run in mid-April, and Force set both Top Speed and Low ET during qualifying at 5.57/259.36. But it didn't stick around long in eliminations, as in the first round, his rear slick came off, and he had to watch as Jim Adolph soloed into the semi-final with a 6.58/171. He also qualified #2 at Atlanta, where his 5.54/260.11 followed McCulloch's 5.53/269 at the NHRA Southern Nationals. After an easy first-round win, he got another in round two when Jim Head smoked the tires against him and shut down. Force advanced with a 5.58/264. He then ran 5.60/263 to defeat Bernstein's 5.72 in the semi-final. He faced McCulloch in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Ed's track record 5.52/266 win over John's 5.60/265.17. The team was having a rough time during qualifying at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. A 5.60 was followed by a tire-smoking, shut off 22.84. He then ran 5.55/263.69 and came back out and smoked the tires again. Still, the 5.55 qualified #1. But he was upset in the first round, where Chuck Etchells' 5.65/254 put his 5.78/254.23 on the trailer. After this race, Force was sitting in fifth place in NHRA points. Photo from Columbus 1988.

Notes: Third Woody Gilmore car. Photo from the 1973 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Confirmed 6.47 at 221 for this car in 1973. | We ran back to back 6.30s at 235 at Englishtown 1973, match racing Jungle Jim. This was just the 426 Ramchargers motor, not the 475 inch Ed Pink stroker. We could not make that bigger motor run as well as the smaller Rams motor, although the Snake, Ray Beadle, Pat Foster, and others had luck with it. We had two Ed Pink motors, but ran a tenth and a half slower than the 426. We ran high 6.30s at NY National. We ran 6.39 at Detroit. Then the Ramchargers came out and ran 6.38 to get the track record back. Then we came out and ran 6.36 to take it back again. I stopped racing at the end of 1973. I had developed some ulcer problems and that ended my deal. Too much living out a suitcase and not eating right, etc. Had a chance to race for Mazmanian a year later when Danny Ongais went IndyCar racing, but was having too much fun with my young son and stayed out. Ended up driving display rigs for Mr. Gasket and Bob Glidden, but that was as close as I got to the action again. - Dwane Ong, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com radio show, 6/08/15 | Best NHRA national event times of 6.699/214.28 at the 1973 Supernationals.

Notes: The first 290 mph Funny Car in the sport at Ennis 1991 with a 290.13 blast. Wes Cerny's 290 mph tuning skills on this car caught the attention of Kenny Bernstein, who hired him for the 1992 season, resulting in the sport's first 300 mph run. Photo from Indy 1991. | Jim qualified #1 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with track records of 5.25/278.63. The team was running a new engine set-up that used Leonard Hughes cylinder heads with Wes Cerny's tune up. They actually qualified with their "old" engine and switched to the "new" combination for eliminations. A first-round 5.39/277.26 stopped Gary Litton's 5.58/259. In round two, Dominic Santucci lost to White's 5.36/273.63 and a semifinal 5.33/272.89 beat Mark Oswald, who smoked the tires and shut off. He faced Mike Dunn in the final. Their times in eliminations had been close, but White's 5.39/263.77 finished second best to Dunn's 5.34/275. The "Hawaiian" team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where, once again, Jim qualified #1 with track records of 5.34/274.72. The field was short, so White got the "odd-lot" solo in the first round, and ran 5.35/274.72 (again!) He was flexing the car's power as that was easily Low ET of the opening round. In round two, he downed Ed McCulloch with a 5.41/255.39 and a semifinal 5.44/270.83 beat Al Hofmann, whose car broke an A-arm on the run. He came up against John Force in the final. White had been running a tenth faster than Force. Jim got the victory with a 5.54/271.90 when Force tried to match the "Hawaiian's" times and put too much power into it and smoked the tires. Jim continued to set track records at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 5.18 track record at 280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #1 for the third straight NHRA event. An opening round 5.39/273.47 beat Gary Bolger's 5.53/261 and a 5.38/276.66 beat Santucci's close 5.38/272 in round two. But in the semifinals, White blew an engine and slowed to a 5.70/193.88, losing to eventual winner Del Worsham's 5.37/272. The team's combination didn't work quite as well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Jim’s 5.50/263.00 qualified #4 and he was upset in the first round, when Richard Hartman's 5.71/255 got the better of his 5.74/249.30. Jim's 291.82 at the World Finals was the Top Speed of the entire meet, including the Top Fuelers.

Notes: Fred Goeske came to fame as the second owner of the B&M Plymouth Dealers Barracuda in late 1966. Goeske raced the heavy stock rear-engine car until the end of 1967. His season started at Irwindale's New Year's FC race. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the tough eight-car field. At the AHRA Winternationals on January 29, Fred ran 8.94 in the first round, but he lost to Roger Wolford's 8.91. He was back at Irwindale on February 19 for its Factory Showdown race. An 8.83/180.36 in the opening round beat Doug Nash's 9.50/145 Bronco. In the semifinal, Jim Liberman lost fire in the "Brutus" and Goeske's 8.72/182.54 advanced. In the final, he faced Eddie Schartman's Comet. Fred got crossed-up and shut off while Eddie ran 8.71/170 for the victory. On March 19, he qualified #6 for an eight-car show at Carlsbad with an 8.88. He improved to 8.56/181.80 in round one to defeat Pete Gates' Comet, but in the semifinals, despite running a career-best (to this point) of 8.48/184.20 (Top Speed), he lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 8.45/164. He won the "heavy" (2400 lbs.) funny car category at the 4th Hot Rod Magazine Championships at Riverside, CA, in April 1967. His 8.69/183.28 qualified #1, and his 8.72/186.72 (Top Speed) won over Gas Ronda's 9.06/162. In June, Goeske was at Fremont to take on Doug Thorley's new Corvair in a best of three match race. In their first race, Fred ran 8.65/185.56 to beat Doug, who broke a couple of valves. The Corvair was done for the day, and Goeske wanted to make another run and try to top 190. Unfortunately, a blown head gasket held him back to 8.82/168.85, but he won the match. Fred also ran 8.31 at the Lions Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA, 11/25/67.

Notes: Al started the '98 season by setting a track record 4.86 at Pomona in qualifying #1 for the NHRA Winternationals. His speed on the run was 304.15. In the opening round of eliminations, he got out of shape and ran 6.68163.30. He got lucky, as his opponent, Mark Sievers, had shut down with problems. But Hofmann continued to have problems in round two, where his shut off 15.57/72.70 lost to Gary Densham's 4.99/305. He also qualified #1 at the next NHRA event, the Arizona Nationals held in Phoenix. His 4.99/304.67 got him the pole. A first-round 5.02/302.21 defeated Del Worsham's early shut-off 5.79/173. But in round two, Al smoked the tires and shut down to an 8.51/97.82 that lost to Ron Capps' 5.07/302.

Notes: The car had that wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January, Meyer had his supercharger explode on a 5.84/218.44 qualifier. The brand-new Mustang body was blown to pieces, and he received slight burns to his forehead. He was done for the day. Billy started the '85 NHRA season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with final attempt, 6.03/239.36. Billy lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He destroyed another Mustang body at Atlanta on March 10. He was there for an eight-car show where he qualified #8 with a 6.42/223.88. In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking Pulde with a 5.82/240.00, but in the lights, the blower exploded and took the Mustang body with it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91/254 beat his 5.97/243. A best of 5.93/229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the semifinal, he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95/243 with a 5.88/250. In the final, he faced Pulde, and they both ran 5.80 (Billy at Top Speed of the meet, 261.62), but Dale got the win. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #8 with a 5.93/208.04. A 5.99/250.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/224. In round two, he got out of shape and shut off in a loss to John Lombardo's 5.91/246 in the "Blue Max.” Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3 with a 5.84/247.38, but in the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.83/236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.89/231.60. A second-round 5.81/242.06 beat a tire-smoking John Force and in the semifinals, a 5.82/241.54 beat John Collins' 5.94/244. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81/251 beat Meyer tire-smoking run. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.704/256.70 for the #2 spot. He smoked the tires hard in the first round, with a 6.05/254.09, but still beat Head, who blew an engine. He lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian" in round two. He was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals. After that, he made the trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.80, but he lost to Tim Grose in the opening round. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Meyer's 5.96 at only 205.94 qualified #7. He beat Cal Jackson in the first round, with a 6.59/153.73 before losing to John Force's 5.95/243 with a 5.99/222.77 in the next round. He then went to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Billy qualified #4 and ran 5.806/250.00 and 5.889/245.23 to reach the semifinals where he lost to Pulde.

Notes: AKA the Batmobile. Set national record at 5.482 (low qualifier) at Pomona Winters, then first in the 5.30s with a 5.39 and finally a 5.364 at the Ennis, Texas, All-Stars race in April (but records were not recorded at that race). Won 1987 world championship with a quarterfinal finish at Ennis on 10/87. Best non-special event ET was 5.429 at Ennis Fall 87. | Bernstein debuted the "Batmobile" at Firebird Raceway on January 18 for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.69/253.52. A first-round 5.73/250.69 beat Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" while he beat Ed McCulloch in the semifinals with a 5.72/254.28 (Top Speed). In the final, he met #2 qualifier, John Force. The two had a good race, but Force's 5.70/252 got the win over Kenny's 5.78/243.24. He won his 18th NHRA National event at the Winternationals. Bernstein set a 5.48 track record in qualifying #1. More importantly, the ET was a new NHRA record. His speed on the run was 266.66. He had some problems as in the first round, he burned a main bearing on a 5.62/261.24 single when Force lost a blower on the line. The team installed a new engine for their round two race with Ed McCulloch who had run a strong 5.53/266 in his first-round race. Ed overpowered the track and Kenny's 5.54/265.64 advanced. In the semifinals, Dale Pulde got out on him, but the "Budweiser King's" 5.56/263.62 got the win over Pulde's 5.75/253. This put Bernstein into the final against Australian Graeme Cowin. The final went to Kenny as his 5.48/264.16 beat Cowin who blew an engine. Kenny then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. His 5.67/253 in qualifying held for Low ET of the meet, and he made his way to the final where he faced Tom McEwen. A 5.73/256.41 (Top Speed) got Bernstein another victory over McEwen's 5.87/243. The following week (March 22), the "Budweiser King" was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Kenny set a new track record 5.47 in qualifying #1. His speed on the run was 264.31. Crew chief, Dale Armstrong backed it down to 5.58/261.93 in the first round, but it was still enough to beat Tom Hoover's 5.73/252. A 5.59/263.85 in round two took out Doc Halladay's 5.95/241, but in the semifinals, Bernstein, Bernstein smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 5.71/257. He didn't have to wait long before he got his next win. It came at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Winston All-Star race on April 5. There were no points on the line at this race. Kenny ran 5.41/264.93 to lead the eight-car field. A 5.39/263.77 in round one, beat West's 5.64. He really opened it up in the semifinals with a 5.36/265.56 to beat Mike Dunn's 5.71. Just as he had at Darlington, he faced McEwen in the final. This time McEwen was behind the wheel of Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max.” Tom ran a great 5.42/231 in the final only to be overshadowed by Kenny running another 5.36 at 266.35 for the victory. Another win in the still young season came at Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. There his 5.52 track record at 263.62 qualified #1. He beat John Martin in the first round, with a 5.82/255.53 and in round two he ran Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. The two had a good race with Bernstein's 5.61/264.47 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the measure of Oswald's 5.68/263. In the semifinals, a 5.57/262 beat the "Ace" McCulloch. This set up a final round meeting with Force. Kenny avenged his lost to Force from Firebird Raceway in Jan by downing John's 5.74/262 with a 5.55/264 for his 19th NHRA National event victory. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Kenny set Low ET and Top Speed in the final where his 5.61/256.41 beat Jim Head for the trophy. The wins kept stacking up as he then went out and won the NHRA Cajun Nationals.

Notes: Paul attempted to qualify Chuck Etchells' car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.782/232.55 was good for the first alternate position. He also failed to qualify the car at the Gatornationals with a 6.23/234.37 best. | Paul finally tapped into the 5.60s at the Englishtown K-Mart/Polaroid US All Pro Funny Car Championships on 8/30/87 with a 5.67/247.25 in his 2nd Run against Al Hofmann. Paul would then Run the IHRA US Open Nationals at Rockingham where he set the IHRA Nitro Funny Car Speed record at 274.39. In round 1 Paul would defeat Mike Edstrom but would lose to Doc Halliday in the Semis. In December, Paul ran another 5.60 pass to close out the 1987 Season at Moroso during the Citrus Nationals in his Final Round victory with a 5.65.

Notes: First funny car in the fours. First member of the Castrol 4-Second Club for Funny Cars on October 1/1993, with a 4.987 at the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals in Topeka, Kan. Terrible & terrific year in 1993: crew chief Yingst died during NHRA Slick 50 Nats in Spring, rebounded to make historic pass in Fall. Photo from Columbus 1993. | Chuck started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.14/285.44, but in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Del Worsham. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, his 5.41/265.01 qualified #10. He improved to 5.22/272.39 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.15/287. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Slick 50 Nationals. Etchells qualified #5 with a 5.16/270.59 and in round one, his 5.14/286.35 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.46/275. In the second round, both he and Cruz Pedregon ran 5.22 (Chuck at 276.83), but Cruz crossed the finish line first. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, Chuck ran 5.30/277.86 to qualify #8. His 5.21/274.30 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.28/281 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, but he broke against Hofmann in round two. He went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational and qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.27/266.03. But in the first round, while faced Bonin, Chuck did his burnout and then was unable to back up after his reverser failed. After having such a rough time in the first few events, things went a little more his way at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.09 at 291.07. In the first round Caminito fouled against him and Etchells advanced with a 6.05/167.09. Round two saw Whit Bazemore fail to show and Chuck soloed to a 5.26/271.41. In the semifinals, he and his opponent, Freddie Neely smoked the tires with Chuck recovering first with a 5.49/265.95 over Freddie's 5.69/262. This put him into the final against Force. Unfortunately, John got the victory. The sixth NHRA race of the season was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Etchells qualified #4 for the show with a 5.29/277.60. An easy 5.66/207.75 in round one, beat Brent Fanning, but in round two he lost a close race to Bonin. Gordie's 5.26/285 nipped his 5.27/274.97. At the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, Chuck qualified #2 with a 5.04/288.46 just behind Force's 5.01/289. Etchells beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.18/281.69 while in round two his 5.22/279.32 took out Kenji Okazaki. A semifinal 5.27/265.17 topped Tom Hoover's close 5.30/283 and moved him into the final against Force. Once again, John stopped him in the final. Force won with a 5.14/290 while Etchells was busy smoking his tires to an 8.01/104.69 for the runner-up spot. On May 28 these two faced off in a best of three match race at the 1/8 mile Lancaster track. Things didn't go well for Etchells as he lost two straight with times of 4.13/170 and 3.92/178 while Force ran a best of 3.73. Repeated his 299.50 from Topeka at when he set Top Speed at Ennis Fall 1993.

Notes: Roy ran a career-best (up to this point) 6.130 at 237.46 to qualify #2 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen in the opening round of competition. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals where he ran 6.31/230.76 to qualify #7 in the eight-car field. Harris' first-round 6.35 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. At the fourth NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove, Harris reached the final against Al Segrini, but had problems and shut down to 9.50-78.12 for the runner-up spot. He earlier had set Top Speed at 229.00. Roy was back at Maple Grove for the "Jungle Jim" Memorial Funny Car Championships. In the first round, his 6.37/214.28 lost to Tom Prock's 6.35/217. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships. There, he finished runner-up to Kenny Bernstein. Indy didn't go the greatest for Harris as his best of 6.21/239.36 left him as the fifth alternate for the NHRA US Nationals. The 6.130/239.36 were his NHRA national event best times for 1979. Where did Roy run 6.03/241.93?

Notes: Bernstein was one of the first FC racers o transport his car with an eighteen-wheeler. The Peterbilt also carried two spare engines as he entered the '79 season with four Ed Pink 1/2 strokers. Kenny failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He did much better on February 18 for Beeline's NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified for the eight-car show and lasted until the final, where he finished runner-up to Tripp Shumake. He then went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he easily won his first-round race. In the second round, he ran 6.55/216.34 to beat a tire-shaking Shumake. The car got out of shape in the semifinal, and Kenny shut off to 9.53 in a loss to Jim Adolph's 6.29. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #8 with a 6.33/229.59, but he got crossed up again and lost to Al Segrini in the first round. The following week (March 18), Kenny was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.17 but failed to reach the finals. On April 22, he won the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta by stopping Dale Pulde in the final. The NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge was postponed by rain and run on May 2. It was here that Kenny got his first NHRA National event victory. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.32/231.95. In round one, he beat Bob Pickett's 6.55/222 with a 6.36/234.98 (Top Speed). In the semifinals, a 6.49/202.55 beat Ron Colson's tire-smoking "Hawaiian." The final saw Kenny face future superstar John Force, and Force had his transmission break giving Kenny the victory with a 6.45/233.76. Bernstein was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 6.17 qualified #2 in the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 6.19/232.55 beat a tire-smoking Pulde, but in the semifinals, Paul Smith in the "Entertainer" got a jump on him, and his 6.39/226 beat Kenny's quicker 6.31/230.76. He qualified #8 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.20/233.76 but lost to Force's 6.27/220 in the first round with a 6.36/229.00. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol, he again ran well. A 6.24 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. A 6.34 in the first round beat Smith's 6.61, and in the semifinals, his 6.57 beat John Pott's 6.95 in the "Mr. Norm" car. That put him in the final with Pulde. Unfortunately, Bernstein took a nap in the final, and his 6.31/223.88 finished runner-up to Dale's 6.47/234. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.35, but in the first round, he fouled against Pulde. The NHRA Summernationals was Kenny's next stop, and he qualified #6 there with a 6.20/238.09. A first-round 6.28 lost to Shumake's 6.23. He was in another final round the following week (July 22) at the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 6.15 qualified #2 for the eight-car show, and he worked his way into the final against Tim Grose. His 6.35/222.22 finished second best to Grose's 6.23/211. Bernstein followed the NHRA tour to Canada in early August for the Grandnationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 6.28/234.37. He improved to a 6.25 in the first round, but it wasn't enough as he lost to Segrini's 6.19. Kenny failed to qualify at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran one round, and the eight lowest ETs advanced into the show regardless of winning or losing. He was runner-up to Billy Meyer at the NHRA Division 4 race at Baton Rouge. His final round 6.47/226.13 lost to Meyer's 6.41/232. At Indy, Kenny's 6.108/231.36 qualified #13 for the NHRA U.S. Nationals. In the opening round, his 6.120/241.93 lost to Ron Colson's 6.06/236 in the "Hawaiian." The Indy times were Kenny's best of the year. He followed that up with a big win at Rockingham for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships, where he stopped Roy Harris in the final. The following week, he was in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.27/227.84 qualified #12. In round one, he improved to 6.24/238.09 but lost to Jim Dunn's 6.10/238.

Notes: Kenny started the year winning at the OCIR Grand Premiere race. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he didn't do quite as well. Bernstein ran 6.342/222.22 to qualify #15, and he beat Dale Pulde in the first round, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. Burgin got him at the next NHRA meet as well, the Gatornationals in March. Kenny qualified #10 with a 5.95/241.93, but a first-round 5.94/245.90 lost to Gary's Low ET run of 5.78/238. Things went more Bernstein's way at Darlington the following weekend (March 20) for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.14 and set Low ET with a 6.13. He beat Pulde in a semifinal tire smoker and then met Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" in the final. Kenny took the win with a 6.21/227.27 over Beadle's 6.39/215. At the NHRA Southern Nationals on April 17 at Atlanta, Kenny's best of 6.08/234.98 (second alternate) failed to qualify for the eight-car show. Yet the following week (April 24), he qualified easily for the eight-car field at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.02 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he failed to reach the finals. He didn't make the finals at the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk either, but he did set Low ET at 5.88. A 6.02/222.77 qualified #4 in the eight-car field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Another 6.02 at 242.58 beat Pulde's 6.14/238, but an off-pace 6.26/226.69 in the semifinals lost to the eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.00/241. He followed the NHRA tour to Columbus for the Springnationals at National Trail. Kenny ran a 5.96/246.57 to qualify #4 but slowed to an off pace 6.25/237.46 in the first round, that lost to John Force's 6.01/246. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals but failed to qualify for the eight-car field with a "bump" of 6.01. The rough spell continued, with Bernstein failing to make the show at the NHRA Grandnationals, another eight-car show. Things went much better at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There he not only qualified, but he made his way into the final before losing to Beadle and taking the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Summernationals, Kenny made the show with a 6.02/245.23 (#11). He beat a tire-smoking Tom Anderson in the first round, before slowing to a 6.14/236 in round two that lost to Rick Johnson's 6.05/240 in the "Custom Body" Omni. He was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late July. Kenny qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.05/234.37 in the thin air. He beat Pulde's 6.29/229 in the first round, with a 6.08/237.46. In the semifinals, an off pace 6.33/217.91 lost to the race's eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler" at 5.97/233. In August, he won over an eight-car field at Bonneville Raceway. He met Force in the final, and his 6.23/227.85 got the victory over John's 6.25/227. Bernstein got his first NHRA win of the year at Brainerd on August 21 for the Northstar Nationals. He ran 5.88/245.23 to qualify #2. In round one, a 5.96/244.56 beat Pulde, and in round two, a 5.97/238 advanced when Ken Veney fouled. He got an easy run in the semifinals when Mark Oswald broke in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but he still ran 5.97/243 for the win. In the final, he was up against Hawley. Kenny gunned him down with a 5.92/246.57 over Frank's 5.96/244. Photo from '83 Cajun Nationals. Longtime Bernstein crewman Mike Guger poses with the Bud King.

Notes: Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79/250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73/252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76/253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91/254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off-25.41/31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93/253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70/250.83. A first-round 5.75/250.69 beat Oswald, but while running Pulde in the second round, he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254, but against Scott Kalitta in the first round, he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79/254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round, against him and McCulloch's 5.82/255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line, advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81/247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69/252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90/244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77/253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88/233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79/251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75/254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

Notes: Larson had his best season ever in '89. He and crew chief Maynard Yingst jelled, and he went on to win the NHRA Funny Car World Championship by winning six events in eleven final round showings. He started the year by qualifying #4 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.62. He improved to a 5.32/259.81 in the first round, to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.50/263. Another 5.32 at 256.41 beat John Martin in round two, while in the semifinals, Bruce eased to a 12.89/54.76 to advance when Jim White broke in the "Hawaiian." In the final, he grabbed his first victory of the year with a 5.63/231.24 over Kenny Bernstein. To show it was no fluke, they then went to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where a 5.30/275.06 qualified #5. He beat White in the first round, and in round two, he reset the NHRA ET record to 5.27 while beating a tire-smoking Prudhomme. (The "Snake" had set Low ET at 5.19 in qualifying but failed to back it up for a record). Mark Oswald smoked the tires in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals, and Larson was in his second final of the new year. Unfortunately, he blew a head gasket in the final, and his 5.58/207.32 finished runner-up to Scott Kalitta's 5.57/264. He was in another final at the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.33/276.07 qualified #2, and in round one, he advanced with a 5.40 when Tom Hoover fouled. His 5.33/273 put Bernstein on the trailer in round two, while a great 5.31/275.48 took out Chuck Etchells in the semifinals. Things were looking good for another victory when he faced Ed McCulloch in the final. Ed had been having a hard time getting his Larry Minor-owned Cutlass down the track. The "Ace's" last two runs were 6.47 and 9.76 in the semis, so Larson was the favorite. Unfortunately, Bruce crossed the centerline on a 5.67 run in the final, and Ed's 19.70 got the victory. Still, three finals in three NHRA races was nothing to laugh at. They were tough. The fourth NHRA event was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Larson qualified #1 with a 5.38/266.82. He beat Oswald in round one, but lost to Mike Dunn in the second round. At Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, they qualified well with a 5.35/268.69 for the #3 spot, but in round one, Larson smoked the tires and lost to Tony McCallum. The team continued their short dry spell at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bruce qualified #5 with a 5.55/268.73, but he only made it as far as round two, where his 5.50 lost to Prudhomme's 5.44. They rebounded from their slump at the NHRA Springnationals. There, Larson qualified #2 with a 5.30/271.32. He reset the NHRA ET record in the first round, with a 5.25 at 271.32 to beat Art Hendey. In round two, he set the track speed record with a 5.35/276.75 over a tire-smoking Johnny West, and in the semifinal, Etchells also smoked the tires against him, and his 5.33/270.27 moved him into the final against Hoover. In the final, Tom had problems and slowed to 6.79/135 while Bruce motored to his second win of the season with a 5.52/275.31. It was a dominant performance. The NHRA teams then headed to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Larson again qualified well, running 5.52/269.38 for the #3 spot. In the first round, he picked up to a 5.49/265.72 to beat White, but the Cutlass broke in round two against Prudhomme, giving the "Snake" a solo into the semifinals. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, a 5.39 qualified #6 for the show. He beat R.C. Sherman in round one, but his quicker 5.50 in round two lost to a quick-leaving McCulloch at 5.56. Maynard tuned the car to a 5.55/251.53 in Denver's thin air for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Bruce beat Kalitta in the first round, and White in the second with a 5.65/248. His 5.54/249 in the semifinals beat McCulloch and Bruce found himself in his fifth final round of the year. He made the best of it, running a 5.66/255.97 to beat Oswald's quicker 5.62/255. At the end of July, the NHRA tour was at Sonoma for the California Nationals. Larson qualified #6 at 5.42/276.07. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. Another win came at Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #1 with a 5.31/277.00. On his way to the final, he ran 5.31/271.98, 5.35/270.10, and 5.37/271.57 to beat Kalitta, Densham, and White in that order. In the final, he faced Bernstein, and once again, Larson used his reflexes to get the victory; his 5.40/271.08 beat Kenny's 5.37/273. 1989 World Champ. Photo from Columbus 1989. Great 5.247/274.72 at 1989 Chiefs was the quickest side-by-side pass (Mark Oswald, 5.232/281.60). Ran 5.282/276.92 at Indy 1989.

Notes: Lombardo started the '78 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 7.25. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.25/236.22 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.23/238. But in the opening round of eliminations, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 6.93/205.47 loss to Tim Kushi's 6.47/223. Lombardo then won the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont in April. He set Low ET at 6.18 and a 6.33/213.77 grabbed the win when John Force broke in the final. John also set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.27/231.95. But once again, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Tripp Shumake. Not long after that (June 4), he was at Portland for the NHRA Division 6 race. Only six FC's showed, and he qualified #1 with a 6.36/202.24. A 6.33/213.27 beat Nick Harmon in the opening round, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal. He won that by beating Twig Zeigler's 6.52/221 in the final with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.25/229.00. In Mid-June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John ran 6.24/227.84 to qualify #8, and an opening-round 6.28/222.77 beat an out-of-shape Tom Anderson. In round two, Bob Pickett's 6.46/221 fell to Lombardo's 6.29/229.59. The car stayed consistent in the semifinals, running a 6.26/233.16, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.17/230. On July 1, he won the OCIR Nitro Championships, setting Low ET at 6.05 along the way. He made a stop at Seattle for a best of three match race against Gordie Bonin. Lombardo won two straight with a 6.23 best. John then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.12/240.64 qualified #4, and he beat a fouling Tom Hoover in the first round. In round two, he ran another 6.12 at 236.84 to beat Gordie Bonin, but the car slowed to a 6.33/216.34 in the semifinals that lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.19/236. On July 29, John was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.20, and he set Low ET in round one, where his 6.07/223 defeated Dennis Geisler. Unfortunately, the car broke in round two against Dave Condit John had a great US Nationals, running steady 6.0s in eliminations, but lost a step and the match to Prudhomme in the semis. Best NHRA ET was 6.057 at Indy, where he also duplicated his 240.64 best.

Notes: This was Bonin's best season since he started driving Funny Cars. It started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he debuted his new Firebird. He qualified #12 with a 6.37, and in the first round, picked up to 6.18/239.36 to beat Dale Emery's close 6.19/229. He then beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" before losing to Raymond Beadle's 6.41 in the "Blue Max" with a quicker, but later 6.40 in the semifinals. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he qualified with a 6.35. Bonin ran a best of 6.10 before losing to eventual winner Eddie Pauling's 6.03 in the semifinals. He dominated the next event, the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #1 with a 6.26/238.72 (Top Speed). He beat Dodger Glenn in the first round, and then set Low ET in round two with a 6.19/236 over Gary Burgin. In the semifinals, he dispatched Beadle with a 6.64/236. In the final, he raced veteran Roger Lindamood. Bonin took his first NHRA national event victory. Gordie then stopped off at OCIR for an eight-car show where he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.13/240.00 before beating Dale Pulde in the final with a 6.26/236.84. He then won the Portland Funny Car Opener. There he set Low ET and Top Speed with a track record 232.95. The next day he went to Seattle and won its Funny Car Opener. Once again, he had the top times at 6.37/230.00. Bonin beat Terry Capp in the final. On April 9, he was at Irwindale's 64 car race. While he failed to reach the finals, he did run a best of 6.34/235.60. He did reach the final at the NHRA Division Six race at Firebird Raceway. There, his 6.58/227.76 times were good for both Low ET and Top Speed, but in the final, he fouled against Rob Bruins, who was driving the "Green Elephant." Gordie won the NHRA Division 6 race at Mission Raceway. He was runner-up at the third Division 6 race in Seattle. He set Low ET at 6.22 before running 6.57/219.51 in the final only to lose to Mike Miller's 6.37/231. In June, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals. Bonin qualified #9 at 6.25/233.76, and in the first round, low qualifier, Burgin, fouled away a 6.15/234 while Bonin advanced with a 6.27/226.70. A second-round 6.29/230.76 advanced over Tom McEwen's troubled 10.12. In the semifinals, he smoked the tire to a 7.09/133.18 in a losing effort to Don Prudhomme, who was long gone with a 6.17/235. He was runner-up to John Lombardo at the OCIR Nitro Championships before winning Woodburn's fourth NHRA Division 6 race. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/229.59 while beating Mike Miller in the final. He did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. On July 31, he was at Portland for a 32 car show, and while he failed to reach the final, he set Top Speed at 224.43. Up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on August 7, Gordie qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 6.36/229.59. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Don ran 6.21/234 to beat Bonin's 6.29/227. A week later (August 13), he was at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. All ten cars there made two runs, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Gordie didn't make the final, but he did win his two races. A 7.21/215.74 beat Beadle in his first race, while he shut off when Twig Zeigler fouled against him in his second race. The NHRA Division 6 final was held at Portland International on August 19, and Gordie set Low ET and Top Speed on a first-round single with a 6.20/236.22. He then beat Miller to reach the final only to have Beadle gate him off the line, and his 6.33/225.56 lost to Raymond's 6.34/227. Bonin was at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals on August 21. He qualified #1 with a 6.34/230.17, and in round one, his 6.30/230.76 solo advanced when Jim Liberman lost fire. Gordie had another solo in round two when Capp shut off, and Bonin advanced with a 6.38/219.50. He looked like he was on his way to another win as his times were the best in each of the first two rounds, but he failed to hear the call for his semifinal race against Beadle, and the "Blue Max" was able to make a solo run into the final. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #3 with a 6.106/240. An off-pace 6.62/224.43 lost to Bob Pickett's 6.36/216 in the first round. Only fifteen cars showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals, so qualifying wasn't a problem. Still, Bonin ran 6.28/234.98 (Top Speed) to qualify #5 for the show. A 6.42/222.77 advanced over Bob Papirnick in the first round, but in round two, his 6.40/230.76 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.28/223. Irwindale held its last race ever on October 1, and Gordie was there. It was a sixteen-car field, and Bonin ran 6.69/223 in the first round, over Tom McEwen, and in round two, Prudhomme broke on the line, and Gordie advanced with an easy run. In the semifinals, he faced Lombardo and Bonin ended up having traction problems and shutting off while John ran 6.28/193 to advance. At Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals, Gordie ran 6.19/239.36 to qualify #5. Bob Pickett broke against him in the opening round of eliminations, and his 6.19/232 advanced. A strong 6.16/239 beat low qualifier Burgin's 6.25 in round two, and in the semifinals, a 6.22/232 beat Tommy Ivo's troubled 11.68. The final came down to Bonin vs. The "Snake." Prudhomme had run been running like a bracket racer, hitting 6.06 on all three runs in eliminations, not to mention his 6.05 in qualifying. So it looked like Bonin was done. But, both slowed to 6.3's in the final, and Bonin's 6.31/228.42 triggered the win light ahead of Don's 6.36/238. | Runner-up to Mike Miller at Seattle PDA. - Joe Moore

Notes: The C&O Jeep used a fiberglass body from Fibercraft Co. It used a 392 Hemi that was overbored .030. It also ran a 1/2 stroker crank from Reath. M/T rods and pistons were used as well as a Schneider cam. Syverson ported and polished the heads and both the intake and exhaust valves from Donovan measured 2 1/8 inches. An M/T intake manifold held the 30% overdriven blower in place. A Hilborn injection unit topped it off. The engine was run on 70% nitro. The hp was claimed to be 1,000. A C&O built TorqueFlite was used. The tube frame had a 110" wheelbase and the car weighed in at 2,200 Lbs. Early runs produced an 8.23/177.62. Gene was at Riverside for the HRM Championships in early April, but his first-round 9.22/166.66 lost to Fred Goeske's 8.70/181 in the first round, of the 2400 lb. Funny Car class. On April 15, he competed at an eight-car show at Lions. He qualified #3 with a 9.14 and another 9.14 in the first round, beat Rusty Delling's "Fiberglass Trends" Corvair. He lost to the race's eventual winner Hayden Proffitt in the semifinals. Irwindale held an eight-car show on August 26 and Gene was there. A first-round 8.24/176.12 beat Don Williamson in the "Hairy Canary", but in the semifinals, he fouled away an 8.53/171.10 against Marv Eldridge's 9.53/169. Conway won over an eight-car field at Lions on September 30. He beat Eldridge's Corvette in the first round, with an 8.39/172.74 and in the semifinals, his 8.31/172.08 beat Steve Barrett's 8.45/171 in the "New Breed." The final found Conway running Frank Pisano's Camaro. Frank ran a personal best of 8.19/170, but lost to Conway's holeshot-aided 8.25/175.78. On December 17, he was at OCIR's final race of '67. He led the eight-car field in qualifying with an 8.07/177 and went on to win, beating Ray Alley in the final. Also ran 8.13 at Fremont in late 1967.

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/253.52. In the first round, his 5.82/240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69/250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well, with a 5.98/233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round, where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67/197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His tire-smoking, off-pace 6.22/234 beat Scott Kalitta in the semifinals, putting him in the final against another long-time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, McEwen broke, and the race never came off, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25/69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain-delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed could not run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals, on April 13. He made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86/256.41. He won, but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round, and in round two, his 6.02/242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12/244 in a tire-smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95/252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final, and Ed got the victory with a 6.00/247.52 over Head's right there 6.00/250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54/168.28. He slowed to a 6.65/162.68 in the first round, which lost to Kalitta's 5.80/252. Crewchief Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00/231.12 qualified #12, but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again, McEwen beat him, but this time it was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals, so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92/249.03. His first-round 5.94/250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78/234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round, when his 6.01/245.90 beat a tire-smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88/244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87/234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time, the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88/249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, with a 5.96/241.93. A 5.86/254 beat West in round two, and his 5.98/252 beat a tire-smoking Oswald in the semifinals. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44/30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81/254. Still, it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop before Indy, which was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight-car show and beat Head in round one, before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88/245.73. In the first round, he survived a tire-smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41/243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34/220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92/226.52, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64/260. The following week (September 7), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #4, but he lost in round one. The team then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Ed's 5.80/251.04 qualified #6. Another 5.80 at 246.30 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.91/235 in the opening round. In round two, eventual winner Oswald ran 5.65/262 to beat McCulloch's 5.85/235.17.

Notes: Tim ran his Corvette at Pomona and Gainesville, but he debuted his new Trans Am at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he qualified #4. A first-round 5.94/241.28 beat John Collins, and he got past the second round to face Billy Meyer in the semis. A 5.99/243.90 lost to eventual winner Meyer's 5.88/247. He qualified for the tough eight-car show at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. That was good; what was bad was that he qualified in the #5 spot, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Oswald, which Grose lost. The next NHRA event was the Springnationals on June 10. Tim qualified #6 with a 5.90/247.25. He fouled in the first round, against Gary Southern. Grose then went to Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. A 6.01 qualified #6. He lasted until the second round before losing to Dale Pulde. In Canada, for the NHRA Grandnationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.87/253.52 but failed to reach the finals. The Summernationals at Englishtown was NHRA's next stop, and once again, Tim qualified easily, running a 5.81 for the #7 spot in the show. He beat Dale Barlet in the first round, but smoked the tires in round two and lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Tim's best times with the Trans am were a great 5.782/257.87 run at NHRA Brainerd. He had run 5.780 in Gainesville with the Corvette. | Ran at an Oct. 5th '84 Funny Car match race at Carlsbad. The race featured a 'Goose/Grose final. Grose went 5.93 and 5.89 to win. Chi-Town was there (6.05) Dunn's new Mustang, Densham, Checker Auto Parts Citation, Amos Satterlee the CC, and Tom Ridings in the Lidtke Trans Am. - Joe Moore

Notes: Kelly Brown did really well driving this car at its first major event, the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #4 with a 6.904/208.33 and an opening-round 6.89/212.26 beat Leonard Hughes. In round two, he made an easy pass when Bobby Rowe failed to fire. In the semifinals, Brown set Top Speed at 218.97 (6.81) while defeating Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's now Chrysler-powered Mustang at a close 6.96/213. He faced low qualifier Don Schumacher in the final. Don had been running quicker in eliminations, but the final was close. Kelly stepped it up to 6.81 in a runner-up finish to Schumacher's 6.76/218. Early in July, he was at OCIR for its Nitro Championships. He ran his remarkable 227.27 in qualifying, at the time, the fastest run ever. In the first round, he beat Bob Pickett with a 6.91/213.27, but he fouled against Stan Shiroma in round two. A couple of weeks later, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Only ten cars showed, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue, and Brown got the #7 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he blew the engine in the first round, and slowed to a 7.35/153 loss to Gene Snow's 7.05/196. Apparently, Kelly had some extra time on his hands on August 19 when he went to OCIR to test the new "Blue Max" Mustang for Harry Schmidt. Ed Pink was also there to see what the car would do. At Indy, for the NHRA US Nationals, a 6.731/221.67 qualified #6, but a troubled 7.32/212.76 in the first round, lost to Jim Dunn's 6.97/200. His next stop was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, the following week (September 10) for the Larry Reyes Benefit race. All nineteen cars made just one pass, with the lowest ET being declared the winner. Brown ran 6.93/220 to beat Dave Condit's 7.03/214 in the "LA Hooker." His time was the fourth lowest overall. He was runner-up to Jake Johnston at Amarillo's NHRA Division 4 final. Not long after this, Don Schumacher and then Pat Foster replaced him behind the wheel. Kelly drove the Mr. Ed Charger at NHRA Ontario. We formerly listed a 6.70 for Kelly. Removing that until we get confirmation.

Notes: Bob Pickett debuted Mickey Thompson's newly painted Grand Am at the Nitro Bowl at Fremont. The car was still unlettered for the race. The team had trouble getting the car to "stick" as Pickett smoked the tires in all three of his runs. He won his first race where his 8.56/148.27 beat Raymond Beadle's even more smoked in 10.40 in the "Blue Max." A second-round 8.32 lost to Norm Wilcox's 6.51 in the "Hawaiian," and a 7.09 in his last race lost to Gary Burgin's 6.63. The team skipped both the AHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Winter Classic, but they were at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.301/187.50 qualified #10. But an opening-round 6.655/209.79 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.411/210.77. Shortly after that (February 21), he was at OCIR for its East/West meet. Six cars were competing that were to make three runs each. In Pickett's first race, his 6.38/214.28 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.48/232. The Grand Am broke in the second race and lost to Don Prudhomme. He won his third race easily as his opponent, Tommy Ivo, crossed the centerline. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Bob's 6.521/230.17 qualified #11, and in the first round, his 6.57/225.00 beat Beadle, who smoked the tires to a 6.69/228.42 (see linked video). A second-round 6.65/221.13 beat Tom Hoover's 6.74/220.04, but tire smoke did him in in the semifinals, where his 7.09/193.96 lost to Shirl Greer's 6.50/206.42. In 1976, Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 MPH Funny Car Championships. The third 200 MPH FC Championship was held on Saturday and Sunday, April 3/4. This event differed from the February and March events, as more than eight booked-in cars appeared, so Saturday was deemed a day of qualifying for an eight-car field on Sunday. On Saturday, Jim Liberman led the field with a 6.04, followed by Hoover at a 6.08 and Pickett at a 6.12 with Top Speed at 231 mph. The rest of the field included Gene Snow, Tom Hoover, Mike Burkhart, Gordon Mineo, and Tripp Shumake. Alternates included Tom Ivo, Al Vanderwoude, and Prock, among others. On Sunday, Liberman (who beat Snow and Shumake) met Hoover (who stopped Mineo and Pickett). In that final, Liberman won with a 5.964/234.98 to Hoover's 5.999/230.76. Pickett ran 235.60 in the first and second rounds for Top Speed. This made Liberman the third FC under 6.00 and Hoover the fourth. Bob's next stop was at Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He qualified #1 at 6.40/240.37 (Top Speed). The 240 may not have been totally legit, but Bob ran 230/235 several times during the year. Pickett lasted until round two before his 6.47 lost to eventual winner Gene Snow's 6.31. The following weekend, he was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. It was supposed to be a 32-car show, but only 30 cars showed. All were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. A 6.62/196.50 beat Bryan Raines in the first race, and he ran a decent 6.38/225.56 in the second race, but he lost to Gary Densham's 6.31/202. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. Early in May, he stopped off at Portland for the Oregon Open. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.40 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.20. He improved to 6.26/225.56 in the opening round over John Collins' 6.49/202. Unfortunately, he fouled to McCulloch in the semifinal. The next day (May 9), Bob was in Seattle for the NHRA Division Six opener. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.56/215.82 qualified #5. An easy 6.89/209.30 beat Nick Harmon in the first round. He was a tad late in round two, and his 6.46/223.32 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme's 6.52/216. The M/T car was at St. Louis for the AHRA Springnationals in the first week of June. He qualified #5 for the eight-car show, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom McEwen. Bob's 6.60/191.82 lost to McEwen's 6.33/221. The following week, Pickett was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.500/226.70 qualified #5. His 6.485/229.00 in the first round beat Larry Arnold's 6.506/196.07. Prudhomme stopped him again in round two; the "Snake's" 6.378/206.42 dropped his 6.411/222.22. Bob qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.598/206.89. He lost a close one to Dodger Glenn in round one, 6.837/213 to 6.879/217. He was the first alternate at Indy at 6.295/220.04 but was the fifth qualifier at Seattle at 6.269/199.55. Tom McEwen upset him in round one, 6.40/213.27 to 6.41/229.00. Bob qualified #3 at the World Finals at 6.214/233.76. He beat McEwen in round one, 6.195/233.16 to 6.698/158.73. In round two, he beat Tom Hoover, 6.248/234.37 to 6.429/228.42. Don Prudhomme nipped him in the semis with a 6.251/220.04 to 6.326/230.17 decision. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner.

Notes: The second car under 5.30. Set two national records at 1988 Gators, 5.333 then 5.314. Low qualifier at Indy with a 5.330. Photo from Columbus 1988. | Kenny started the '88 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.57. In the first round, an improved 5.53/257.14 beat Jim Dunn, but in the semifinals, the car broke and he lost to John Force. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.41. A 5.42 in the first round, beat Don Prudhomme, but in round two he smoked the tires and lost to Mark Oswald. More problems kept him from the winner's circle at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Bernstein set Top Speed in qualifying with a 271.90 pass and in round one, his 5.40/267.06 beat Dominic Santucci, but in the semifinals, he shut off just off the line giving Force an easy ride into the final. Kenny broke through with a win at the next race, the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.37/272 and in the first round, beat Chuck Etchells with a 5.33/278.46 (Top Speed). In round two, his 5.39/274.97 beat R.C. Sherman and a Low ET shot at 5.31 took out Tom Hoover in the semifinals. The 5.31 was a new NHRA record. To top it all off, he beat Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the final with a 5.35/278.12. At Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Bernstein lasted until the semifinals where his 5.72 lost to Force's 5.60. Things didn't go very well at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.64 and in the first round, beat Prudhomme, but in round two, the car broke at about half track, advancing Ed McCulloch into the semifinals. For the first time since the season opener at Darlington, Kenny was back on the IHRA trail at Bristol for the Springnationals. He qualified #1 and a 5.66/253.59 beat Scott Kalitta in the first round, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Dale Pulde. A week later he was in the finals at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he ran 5.47 over Johnny West, a 5.53/256 over Prudhomme, and a 5.50/257 over a tire smoking Oswald in the semifinals. In the final, he lost to an old veteran of the Funny Car wars, Bruce Larson. A 5.44 (Low ET) qualified #1 at the NHRA Springnationals and in the first round, he took out Jim Head. A 5.73/244 beat a tire smoking Pulde, but in the semifinals, he got out of shape and shut off, losing to Force. The wins certainly weren't coming as often as they did in years past and at the NHRA Grandnationals, he fouled in the first round, against Jerry Caminito. Kenny qualified #5 with a 5.56/257.65 while Jerry qualified with a 5.89. Things went better at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.48/258.39 qualified #3 in the field and he lasted until the semifinals where Larson's 5.57/260 beat his 5.62/255. The "Budweiser King's" next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. It was an eight-car show and Bernstein qualified #1 with a 5.54 (Low ET) at 248.61. He beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.66/248.61 and a 5.62/249.30 beat Santucci in the semifinals setting up a final, round race with Larson. Kenny won that race. After that, he won the NHRA Seafair Nationals at Seattle. A 5.33/269.46 qualified #3. He beat Eric Reed in the first round, and improved to a 5.32/270 in round two to beat Force. In the semifinals, a 5.43/258 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." In the final, he met Brad Tuttle and Bernstein got the win with a 5.35/271.16. The NHRA Winston All-Stars had only eight-car fields in the Fuel categories. Kenny qualified #3 and made it into the final by beating Force with a 5.43/257 and Mike Dunn with a 5.40/262 in the semifinals. In the final, he faced Oswald, and although both ran 5.52, Mark got the win. Bernstein set a 5.40 track record in Sonoma while qualifying #1 for the NHRA California Nationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, he lost to Reed when both ran 5.48, but Eric got the win light. The "Budweiser Team" had an interesting weekend at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Kenny had set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43 at 264.62, but in the first round, against Pulde, he did his burnout and then proceeded to back up to the line. He then found that the transmission was locked into reverse. Crew Chief, Dale Armstrong and fellow crew member Jim Male lifted the body and tried to help Kenny get the car out of reverse. The car lurched forward, hitting both Dale and Jim. Both were OK other than bruises. Pulde singled for the round win. The jokes started coming by the time Bernstein got to Indy. One team had a decal that read "I Break for Crewmen." It was all in good fun as no one got hurt. The Big Bud Shootout was held in conjunction with the NHRA US Nationals. Over the year, the "Budweiser Team" had earned 1,660 points in qualifying at the National events. They were second to Force. The Shootout consisted of the eight best qualifiers over the year. Kenny had won this event in prior years. He won his first-round race with a 5.41/270.18 over Larson's off pace 6.51/134. In the semifinals, it was Kenny who had trouble and his 9.05/83.42 lost to Head's 5.45/269. The next day (September 4), for the US Nationals, he qualified #1 with a 5.33/268.57. He beat Larson again in the first round, with a 5.40/270.51. In round two, a 5.38/267.30 beat Pulde's 5.40/267 and a 5.35/273.97 in the semifinals took out Oswald's 5.42/269. That put him into the final against McCulloch. Ed had just set a 5.32 track record in his semifinal race so he was tough. Kenny ran his best of eliminations in the final, a 5.34/270.83, but he lost to the "Ace's" slight holeshot with a 5.35/271. It was a close race. Bernstein resumed his winning ways at the next NHRA race, the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove on September 18. There, he didn't qualify so well, only running 6.68/134.16 for the #14 spot. He ran even worse in the first round, but his 7.62 advanced when John Martin crossed the centerline on a 5.52 run. Bernstein picked up the pace in round two when both he and opponent Mike Dunn ran 5.38 (Kenny at 266.50), but the red Buick got the win. In the semifinals, Bernstein out drove Pulde as his 5.38/268.49 beat Dale's quicker 5.34/276. Once again he was in the final, and once again his final round opponent was McCulloch. Kenny showed his reflexes were sharp as he once again won with a holeshot. His 5.36/268.49 got the victory over Ed's 5.34/276.
