Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Nicoll didn't have the success in '74 that he enjoyed in '73. Jim qualified #7 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.44. He beat Gordie Bonin's 6.73 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.49/225.00. He advanced past the second round when Sush Matsubara broke on the line. In the semifinal, a 6.37/230.17 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.41/230, but, unfortunately for Jim, he broke and was unable to make the final, reinstating Prudhomme. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.87 qualified #12, but an opening round 6.83/212.76 lost to Paul Smith's 6.65/221 in the "Fireball Vega." The team was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim’s quick-leaving 6.71/211.76 beat Pat Foster's 6.66/215 in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn in round two. He fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals at the AHRA Grand American held at Dragway 42 in May. Nicoll failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals. |

Notes: LOW and mean. The OCIR 6.01 made Beadle the second quickest Funny Car in the sport after Prudhomme's 5.98 at Ontario 1975 and 5.97 at Indy 1976. | Beadle started the season at the OCIR Opener in January. The car ran great, hitting 6.18/228 in the first round, over Tommy Ivo and a semifinal 6.13 to advance to the final. There he beat Ed McCulloch with his track record 6.01 at 234.37. It was an excellent start to the year. He then went to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #12 with a 7.61. The track was terrible, and Tom Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.73. But the "Blue Max" crew got "her tuned up" in the first round, where his 6.52/223.88 beat Jim West. Beadle set Low ET in round two with a 6.48 to beat Steve Harris, but in the semifinals, the rear-end let go, and Beadle lost to eventual winner John Collins. Then it was off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where a 6.18/232.55 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.14. He beat Tom Prock in the first round, with a 6.15/231.95, and a round two 6.27 beat Hoover's quicker 6.19. Another good light in the semifinals made his 6.41 a winner over Gordie Bonin's 6.40. This put Beadle into the final against Prudhomme. It looked like the "Blue Max" faltered in the final, but it was really just the "Snake" running a great 6.03/247 for the win while Beadle had to settle for the runner-up spot. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Raymond ran 6.31 to qualify #3. He improved to 6.28/228 on a second-round solo when Al Bergler broke, but he lost to Bonin in the semifinals. The team did not run the IHRA Winternationals, and while the "Max" did not reach the finals at the IHRA Dixie Nationals, Beadle was the low qualifier. Raymond was also the low qualifier at the AHRA Springnationals with a 6.57/218.44. He beat Jim White and Tom Hovland before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinals. The team was at Union Grove for the Drag Racing Olympics race on May 29 and 30. The show was run with 22 cars running the first-round, with the four lowest ET's advancing into the semifinals. Beadle's 6.33 was good enough to advance, but he lost to McEwen in the semis. The following day (May 30), they did it again, but the "Max" failed to qualify for the semifinals this time. Surprisingly, they skipped running the NHRA Cajun Nationals in favor of the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, as the races were run on the same weekend (June 5). It was an eight-car field, and Beadle qualified on the "bump" with a 6.59/220.59. But the car came alive during eliminations, running 6.35/229.01 in the first round, to beat Graham and a 6.46/210.78 over Prock's 6.53/213 in the semifinals. He faced Collins in the finals, and Raymond's 6.53/223.52 got the victory over John's tire-smoking 7.13/181. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #11 and lost to Prudhomme in the first round. Beadle won the second PDA race held at Fremont on June 23. There he stopped John Lombardo in the final. He then won the third NHRA Division 4 race at Green Valley. He qualified #2 with a 6.31 and a final round 6.43/191 beat Gordon Mineo's off-pace 7.95/103. The team skipped the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown as the weekend before the team used up three aluminum engines. The team got things sorted out, and they ended the month of July by winning Portland's 32 car show on the 31st. Beadle had set Low ET, and in the final, his 6.35 beat Mike Miller's 6.39. Beadle could not get the "Max" to run a number at Firebird Raceway for the Night Fire 500 race. He smoked the tires and shut off in both his races losing to Bonin and Hank Johnson. A week later (August 19), the car ran right as Beadle won the Division 6 final at Portland. He beat Rich Rogers, driving the "Green Elephant" in the opening round with a 6.43/211.76. A semifinal 6.39/209.30 beat Jim Dunn, and he faced the Low ET car of Bonin in the final. Beadle got out first, and his 6.34/227.84 hung on to win over Bonin's slightly quicker 6.33/225. He then went to Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. Beadle qualified #3 in the eight-car field and then proceeded to run 6.45/212.26 over Bob Pickett and a motor-saving 7.29/141.06 solo when Bonin failed to hear the call for the semifinals. He faced Tom Hoover in the final, and Beadle's 6.53/214.73 finished runner-up to Hoover's 6.40/215. After the team's northern swing, they returned to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, where a 6.22/226.13 qualified a disappointing #14. A first-round 6.20/228 by Tom McEwen sent the 6.45/200.44 of Beadle packing for home. |

Notes: Oglesby was at Darlington attempting to qualify for the eight-car field for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.83/205 best was good for the first alternate. He got into the show when #8 qualifier Murf McKinney had some problems and could not race. Frank took his place in the show and nearly pulled off the upset. In the opening round, Oglesby's 6.96/211 beat Bob Gottschalk's 7.18. A semifinal 6.60/218 beat Denny Savage's 6.59/218. He went up against Dale Pulde in the final. It wasn't much of a race between the two as while Frank was slipping and sliding to 12.39/65, Dale was winning with a Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.35/229. At the AHRA Ozark Nationals, Frank's 7.34/172.08 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He improved to a 6.95/197 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get past John Collins, who beat him with a 6.87/191. Shortly after that (July 23), he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, his 6.62 best (first alternate) failed to qualify for the eight-car with a 6.59 "bump." Frank was in Atlanta in October for the IHRA Winston Nationals. He lost to eventual winner Pete Williams driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. Frank did not race in any NHRA national events in 1975. We need confirmation of the 6.40/238 times. | Spring 1977 SS&DI: John H. Johnson, Jr., son of Ebony Magazine Publisher John Johnson, temporarily threw in with Oglesby on his car. No national tour or even updating the car, probably local expenses, but this is still a highly unlikely venture. I saw a picture of the car. - Joe Moore |

Notes: This is the second car of 1969, the mini Charger. After crashing the car at the Winternationals, Roland Leong had Logghe build a new Charger, and he debuted on May 24 at an eight-car show at Lions. The car was still a little too new, and his best of 7.90 failed to qualify. On May 30, Reyes was at Irwindale for another eight-car show, but the team had the "bugs" worked out this time. He set Low ET at 7.47 but lost his first-round race when Mike Van Sant's 7.55/196 in the Invader beat his 7.65/184.80. But Reyes got back in with the break rule in effect when Johnny Wright, who won his first-round race, broke and couldn't return for the semifinal. The Hawaiian had the lowest ET of the first-round losers, so the team was brought back into the show to race Mike Van Sant again, only this time in the semis. The Invader lost fire on the line, and Reyes advanced to the finals, where he ran a 7.64/184.80 to win over Ron Leslie. The next day (May 31), he raced at OCIR for the Funny Car 500. A 7.40/200.06 qualified #1, and a better 7.38 (Low ET) at 199.55 got past the first-round, and another 7.38/199.11 beat Gordon Mineo in the second round. Larry got a free ride into the final when Manuel Herrera blew his motor on the line. In the final, a 7.63/200.07 (Top Speed) beat Randy Walls for another win. Larry was at Martin, Michigan's US 131, for a best-of-three-match race against Charlie Allen on July 12. Things didn't go well for Reyes on this day as his 7.78/182.54 lost the first race to Allen's 7.68/185. In the second race, the big Charger was shut off on the line with an oil leak, and Allen soloed with an 8.49 for the match race victory. On July 20, the "Hawaiian" was at Suffolk for a best of three against Della Woods and her "Funny Honey" Charger. A 7.65/181.44 beat her 7.97/178 in the first race, and in the second race, Della's car lost a rear end, and Larry's 8.36/137.82 won the match. Reyes made a third run of 7.86/158.45. On October 11, the "Hawaiian" was at Irwindale for a best of three match race against the Fuel altered of Sush Matsubara. Reyes won the match by winning the first two races with a 7.53/190.26, beating Sush's 7.78/194 in the first race, and his 7.72/176.81 beat the out of shape roadster in the second race. Matsubara did win the last race with a 7.78/194 when the Charger lost a transmission. Larry finished the year by winning on December 14 at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified second with a 7.45 but improved to a 7.38/193.96 in the first round, over Johnny Wright's 7.59/179. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 7.27/199.10 over Ray Alley's 7.74/194. In the final, a 7.35/199.54 beat Dave Beebe. By the end of the season, Reyes had racked up an 80% win record for '69. |

He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with an 8.91/166.66, but he lost in the first round. He was at Fremont on Jan 7 for a best of three match race against Ed Schartman. Ed "rattled" his cage winning three straight. Schartman's best was an 8.14 while JJ's best was an 8.61. He competed at Pomona in the S/XS class for the NHRA Winternationals. Jim beat Pete Gates in the first round, before losing to Roger Wolford's 8.47/172 in the second round with an 8.79/167.59. On March 19, Carlsbad held an eight-car event and 15 FCs attempted to qualify. Jim ran an 8.84 for the #5 spot. He beat low qualifier Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 9.00/164.23. In the semifinal, he ran his best ever (to this point) 8.45/164.23 to beat Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-Cuda." In the final, he was to run Randy Walls, but Walls had blown his transmission in the semis so Liberman soloed for the victory. On April 1, Jim was driving the "Brutus" GTO at a match race against Malcolm Durham at Capitol. He blew the GTO's engine in the second race and he pulled his Nova of the truck to race against Durham in the final race. It paid off as the two had both won a race each and in the decisive last race, the Nova hustled to an 8.75/162.74 for the match race win. Jim ran Schartman at York, Pa., for a match race on April 29. He won the first race with an 8.63/163.04 when Ed lost a rear end. In the second race, Schartman set an 8.17 track record over JJ who lost a transmission. In the third race, Jim wrapped up the match with a blower exploding in the lights pass of 8.54/163.04 that just beat Schartman's 8.54/151. On May 10 he was at Cecil County for the Factory Showdown. He crossed the center line in the first round, on an 8.31/171.10 pass against Jack Chrisman. After his first-round loss, he came out and ran a solo pass of 8.19. It was his best ever to this point. Set Maple Grove track records of 8.29/172.85 on May 13. Also ran a 7.83 Irwindale track record. On May 26 at Gary, Ind., US 30 for the UDRA Championships, ran 8.40/168.59 over Roger Wolford's 8.66/168.54 in the semifinal. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Mike debuted the Camaro at Oklahoma City Raceway in April. He was supposed to run against John Wiebe's Top Fuel car with a one-second handicap, but the cars were only allowed solo passes due to high winds. Burkhart ran a best of 8.37/184.00. Mike was at Green Valley Raceway in June for an eight-car show. He made an easy solo in the first round of the competition when Al Vanderwoude failed to fire, and in the semifinals, his 8.05/166.66 advanced when Charlie Therwhanger fouled. The final was supposed to be between him and Gene Snow, but rain canceled it. He was back at Green Valley on August 7 for an eight-car show. Mike set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, where he ran 7.89/189.92 to beat the "Bear-A-Cuda." But in the semifinal, the Camaro got out of shape, and Burkhart shut off against eventual winner Ronnie Runyan. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the AHRA All-American Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.86/175 defeated Bob Fulp's 8.36/175 in the "Limefire." He was late off the line in the second round, and his 8.06/180.36 lost to Runyan's 8.25/169. Confirmed 7.86 at 180.36 at 1968 Bristol All American Funny Car Championships and 7.81 Irwindale. Had real doors. Ran as an alternate at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation. |

Notes: Hughes attempted to qualify for the AHRA Winternationals but failed to make the show. At the NHRA Winternationals, Hughes qualified #8 with a 7.66 (low qualifier was 7.53). He beat Steve Bovan in the first round, and a holeshot 7.71 in round two beat Larry Arnold's quicker 7.58. He faced Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" in the semifinals, and he fouled, advancing Reyes into the final. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Candies and Hughes debuted their new 'Cuda. They made a deal and had Reyes drive their '69 car at the race. In qualifying, the old car out-qualified the new one. Leonard ran 7.28/202 for the #4 spot, while the old car qualified one spot higher in #3 with a 7.21/208 (Top Speed). Both made their way to the final, with the old car's times being much better than the new one's. Times for Hughes were 7.32 over Huston Platt in Tommy Smith's Dart and 7.34 in the semifinals over Bobby Rowe's 7.39 in the "Super Duster." By comparison, Reyes ran 7.15 and 7.107. In the final, the two staged, and after the light turned green, Reyes waited a very long time before leaving the line. Leonard took the victory with a 7.29/202.24, but Reyes still almost caught him and had to lift, running 7.12/191.08. In the semifinals, Reyes had run 206. LaPlace held a Funny Car vs. Top Fuel race on March 15. Hughes won all three of his races, running 7.55/187.11, 7.35/202.24, and 7.36/205.01. On April 12, the Candies and Hughes team was at Amarillo for a match race against Kelly Chadwick. Hughes won both the first two races to sew up the match, but they ran a final race, and Chadwick won with an 8.07 to Hughes' 8.08. The team was tough to beat at the Super Stock Nationals. It was a two-day affair, and on the first day, Leonard qualified #1 with a 7.24/200.44. He beat Phil Castronovo with a 7.22/202.70, while in round two, a 7.19 (Low ET) at 200.44 beat Rowe. Tom Sneden broke on the line in the Bob Banning Dodge in the semifinals, and Hughes 7.22 went into the final. Once again, he met his good friend Reyes. This time out, the outcome was reversed from the Gatornationals final. The "Hawaiian" took the win with a 7.35/201.34 over Leonard's 7.42/200.89. The following day (May 10), these two again worked their way to the final. This time Leonard got the victory with a 7.35. Later in May, LaPlace held a six-car show with all cars running three rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Leonard beat Kenny Bernstein in his first race with a 7.64/189.87. In his second race, Mart Higginbotham's 7.53/185 beat his 7.59/193.13. Hughes got all crossed up against Don Gay and lost his third race with a 7.95/147.70. His best ET did not advance to the final. At Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, Hughes qualified #4 with a 7.26. A first-round 7.30 beat John Dekker, and a 7.29/200 beat Bernstein's ailing Cougar in round two. He fell off to a 7.63/145 in the semifinals, losing to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 7.07/207 in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. In July, Hughes competed at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. All cars made three runs. Leonard lost to Tommy Grove's "Cammer" powered Mustang in the first round. In his second race, a 7.47 beat Randy Walls, while in his third race, a 7.34 beat Marc Susman in the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick. Leonard raced at the 900-foot track at Southeastern Dragway for the Dallas Funny Car Championships near the end of July. It was a sixteen-car show with many "name" drivers in attendance. Hughes' 7.13 in the first round beat Susman, but he lost to Shirl Greer in the second round. |

Notes: This car was a late season replacement for the '70 Duster which burned in a trailer fire while on the road. Runner-up to Gene Snow at '70 NHRA World Finals in Dallas, car ran 6.86/214.79 at that race. | After the Duster burnt in the trailer on the way home from the Seattle WCS race on August 22, Whipple and McCulloch had to ready a new ride. On September 12, Ed was driving his new 'Cuda at Capitol for the Funny Car Grand Prix. |

Notes: Arnie started driving John's Cuda in competition on June 13 at Lions for its All-American series race. Arnie qualified #1 with a 7.39 but came up against the always tough Gene Conway in the first round. Sure enough, Conway set Low ET at 7.26/202.70 while beating Behling's close 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed). Arnie got back into the show for the semifinals when Steve Bovan broke. He made good use of his second chance by running a 7.60/196.07 to beat Bob Smith's 7.95/163 in "Bad Bascomb's Ghost." That put him in the final, where once again, he faced Conway's Corvette. Arnie must have been a little nervous as he fouled away a 7.79/193.54, giving Gene the victory. At the OCIR March of Dimes race on June 20, he set Low ET at 7.25/199.50 in his first-round victory over Conway's 7.74/195. In the semifinal, a 7.67/199.55 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.72/194. But against Mike Snively in the final, he got a little anxious and fouled, running a 7.41/202.70. Snively ran a 7.26/203.61 for the win. On July 3 for the Nitro Championships at OCIR, he again set Low ET at 7.25, but this time, it came in the final while beating Ray Alley for the win. He ran an easy 7.64/190.67 in the first round, when Jack Chrisman's Mustang broke. A 7.46/180.36 beat Dave Beebe's 7.48/195 in round two, and in the semifinal, he set Top Speed with a 7.43/200.44 pass over Snively's 7.67/194. His final round numbers were 7.25/200.00 over Alley's 7.95/191. He went out and did it again the next day at Irwindale's Fourth of July race. He beat a troubled John Lombardo with a 7.81/190.26 in the first round. In the semifinal, he was to have met Ray Alley, but Alley broke, so Arnie soloed with a 7.59/186.32. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.53/191.88, beating Conway's off pace 8.36/111. On July 11, he ran at the AHRA All-American meet at Lions. Again he came away with Low ET and Top Speed when he won his first-round race over Vic Morse with a 7.31/198.67. He beat Ray Alley in the semifinal with a rear-end breaking 8.02/133.13 but could not fix the car in time for the final, so Alley returned to run with the break rule in effect. He qualified #1 on August 1 at Irwindale's Gold Cup Championships and beat Barry Kelly's Corvair in the first round, with a 7.38 (Low ET) at 186.32, but in round two, he won the race when Frank Rupert crossed the centerline, but Behling's car caught fire and was unable to return for the semifinals. He was ok. On August 15, they were back at it at the OCIR Anniversary Race. Once again, Arnie had Low ET and Top Speed at 7.14/210.78 (track speed record). He beat John Lombardo's 7.57/192 in the first round, with a 7.19/208.81. But the car came up ailing in round two and could only muster a 7.99/171.42, losing to Ed Lenarth's 7.64/181. At Indy for the US Nationals, a 6.895/214.79 qualified #3, but he lost a blower belt on the line in the first round, and Ken Safford advanced. That was the only NHRA national event that the team ran together. On September 13, Behling was at Lions for an eight-car All-American race. He qualified #1 with a 7.39, and in the first round, his 7.30/203.61 (Top Speed) lost to Conway's 7.26/202. He got back into the show on the break rule and beat Bob Smith driving the "Bad Bascomb's Ghost" car in the semifinals with a 7.60/196.07. In the final, he reran Conway, and once again, the results were the same. Gene got the victory while Arnie's 7.79/193.54 finished runner-up. By the end of September, Rich Siroonian was back behind the wheel. |

Notes: Tom had a great season in '86. The season started on a bad note when his 5.93/212.26 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He wasn't at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he made sure he was noticed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.82/253.52. A 5.86/247.93 beat Ray Higley in the first round, and in round two, a 5.86/249.03 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. He faced low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, and McEwen was up to the task. He left on time and beat Bernstein's quicker 5.65/255 with a 5.677/256.11. That put him into the final with Ed McCulloch. Unfortunately, Tom's Corvette broke, and the "Ace" soloed for the victory. He qualified #2 at the IHRA Bayou Nationals but failed to reach the finals. He didn't have a very good outing for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His best of 6.11/238.47 in qualifying put him in the #15 spot, and he lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. McEwen qualified second to Mark Oswald, and in the opening round, his 5.78/255.68 advanced over Scott Kalitta, who crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, his 5.77/257.87 lost to Kenny Bernstein's track record 5.58 at 246. He sure ran well at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, where he found himself in the winner’s circle. It started with a 5.70/257.87 that qualified #3. An easy 5.99/242.06 advanced past the first round when John Martin failed to show. In the second round, his 5.78/249.16 beat Tim Grose's 5.89/239. In the semifinals, a 5.85/236.71 beat Oswald's 5.94/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. That put him into the final against Billy Meyer. Meyer smoked the tires and Tom roared to a 5.78/249.16 for the victory. He continued to run well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where after qualifying #4 with a 5.77/252.17, he made his way to the semifinals before having problems and shutting off to a 6.43/143.28 loss to Bernstein's 5.72/255. The following week (June 22), he was runner-up to Oswald at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 29. McEwen qualified #6 with a 5.85/240.77 and a first-round 5.82/233.28 beat Jim Head, but in the second round, he went up in smoke and lost to Johnny West's 5.79/259 in the "Hawaiian." Milan, Michigan, was his next stop on July 6 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.99/227.27, and once again, he smoked the tires, losing to McCulloch in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.69/254.66. He got payback by beating McCulloch in the first round, but in round two, he had problems and shut off against Oswald. A week later (July 20), he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He ran well, qualifying #2 for the show, but failed to reach the finals. His best NHRA times were the 5.677 from Gainesville and 257.87 at the Cajuns. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Photo from Milan, Mich., 1986. |

Notes: The Grand Am was getting a repaint by Bill Carter before the start of the season. While the team did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, Pulde qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.35/222.77. He beat Mike Mitchell in the first round, with a 6.44/217.39, but in round two, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.79/79.29 in a loss to Dale Emery's 6.46/223 in the "Jeg's" Camaro. Early in March, he was at Amarillo for a best of three match against Gene Snow. The Pontiac won all three races with times of 6.80,6.71 and 6.76. Snow was not far off as his best was 6.72. Pulde's best speed was 203. The team also did not race at the NHRA Gatornationals. On March 23, the M/T car was at Irwindale's Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car field, and Pulde's 6.66 qualified #6. He the Leroy Goldstein, who was driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite, had a really close first-round battle that saw Dale's 6.93/215.82 defeat Leroy's similar,6.93/210. He slowed to 7.08/191.89 in a loss to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.69/217 in the "Lil Demon" in the semifinal. He won the Seattle Opener in April, stopping Twig Zeigler's 6.48/219 in the final with a 6.49/220. In June, Pulde was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #11 and an off-pace 7.42/157.61 in the opening round lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.61/192. The following week (June 14), he was at Byron's Manufacturer's Meet. It wasn't a good outing. His 6.85/191.08 fell to Tom McEwen's 6.86/201 in the first round, and in the second, the car caught fire in his race against Denny Savage. A valve cover gasket had failed, and oil got onto the headers causing the fire. Dale got it stopped ok, and there was little damage other than scorched paint. Not long after that, he was in Connecticut for an eight-car show. A 6.73/209.30 beat Fred Goeske's 6.90/210 in the opening round, but the car broke and could not run after that. They did not run at either the NHRA Summernationals or the Grandnationals, but they were at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Pulde ran 6.44/220.04 to qualify #7. Despite improving to 6.36/220.04 in round one, he lost to Pat Foster's 6.31/221 in John Lombardo's Vega. The next stop was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. Until this time, the car was not setting the world on fire as far as its performance went, but this race changed all that. Dale ran 6.38/224.43 to qualify #6. In the first round, he improved a bit, running 6.33 at just 201.79 to beat Pickett's 6.87/175. Everything changed in round two; his outstanding 6.16/233.76 (Low ET and Top Speed) dumped Don Prudhomme's 6.49/178. This changed everything for Shirl Greer, who had been fighting with Prudhomme for the points championships. Pulde's beating the "Snake" gave Greer the hard-fought title. In the semifinal, Dale banged out another stout number, a 6.17/233.76, but he was late off the line, and he finished second best to Dave Condit's 6.19/226 in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. Condit would go on to win the race. A week later (October 20), Pulde went to Fremont for its National Open. It was an eight-car field. The M/T Pontiac was running well there as well as he set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round with his 6.38/228.21 beating Prudhomme's 6.41. Beating the "Snake" two weeks in a row was pretty much unheard of. Pulde lasted to the final, where he was to face Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. But Dale had a supercharger explosion on the line, and Garten won the rave with a 6.61. Irwindale held its Team Funny Car Championships the next week, and Pulde ran well. A 6.42/205 beat Snow in the opening round. He then lost to Tom Hoover in his second race. Garten fouled against him in his third race. Set new world record for funny cars at 1974 Supernationals / World Finals at Ontario: 6.16/233.76. - RT | Yellow, red, black versions. Also was painted in red this season (raced at Indy '74 in that livery). - CS | Ran 6.44 at Fremont, 6.35 at Pomona, 6.36 at Indy. |

Notes: Gordie was at Beeline in January for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #9. In the first round, he faced low qualifier Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang. Unfortunately, Bonin's engine let go, and he had a major fire just off the line. He was OK. The damage was minimal, and the team repaired it in time to make it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where Gordie ran 6.410/233.16 (Top Speed) to qualify #11. A first-round 6.545/227.84 lost to Mike Miller's 6.43/220 in the "Green Elephant." At Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, Bonin qualified #2 with a 6.30/233.76 behind Don Prudhomme's amazing 6.08/235. A 6.46/223.88 in the first round lost to Jake Johnston's 6.29/225. On March 16, he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Bonin continued to qualify well, running 6.437/230.17 for the #4 spot in the field. A first-round 6.678/225.00 lost to Tom Prock's 6.62/224. At the Seattle Opener, Bonin beat Jerry Ruth's Mustang in the first round, with a 6.56/220.58, but in his second race, he went into a wheelstand and shut off, losing to Ed McCulloch's 6.27/218. Bonin was back in Seattle in June for the second Olympia All-Pro Series race. An opening round 6.54/224.43 beat Bill Spevacek's off-pace 7.87/138, and in the semifinals, Gordie ran 6.66/227.27 to beat Mike Miller's 6.84/211 in the "Green Elephant" car. He faced Twig Zeigler in the final, and Bonin took the victory with a track record speed of 230.17 coupled with an ET of 6.32 over Twig's 6.56/229 runner-up effort. Gordie qualified #3 at NHRA Columbus with a 6.472/220.04. He beat Bob Pickett in round one, 6.990/216.34 to 10.35/68. Shirl Greer beat him in round two, 6.53/206 to a 9.59 shut-off. On June 29, he was at Edmonton International for the NHRA Division Six race. Things did not go well there as he lost fire on his burnout in the first round, giving Ken McLean a solo. Things went better at Bremerton for the next NHRA Division Six race. A 6.69 qualified #1; in round one, his 6.82 beat Larry Palmer. He smoked the tires in the semifinals, but his 7.14 was still enough to beat Don Rae's 7.86. He faced Miller in the final and got a 6.61 victory over the "Elephant's" 6.97. He was running a new Schiefer clutch setup rather than the conventional Crower glide. He ran a 6.432/217 best at the PHR US 131 race, losing to Denny Savage. At NHRA Sanair, Gordie qualified #6 at 6.62/213.27 but lost to Tom Prock in round one, 6.54/216 to 6.67/217.39. Gordie was the seventh alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.560/227.27. He qualified #14 at Seattle at 6.980/195.22 and lost to John Lombardo in round one, 6.86/196 to 7.255/216.34. Gordie ended the year with a fourth alternate effort at Ontario. We don't have those times, but the third alternate was Paul Smith at 6.439. |

Notes: Photo from Indy 1986. Drag Racing List has 5.845/250.69 times from Maple Grove national event. | Larson attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 6.31/168.53 failed to make the field. In March he faced off with Dominic Santucci for a best of three match race at Englishtown. Larson won two straight running times of 6.28/230.76 and 6.17/238.09. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his best of 6.28/225.79 failed to qualify. He competed at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.22 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.00 before losing in the semifinals. Bruce got into the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. His 6.25/220.26 held the "bump spot" in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Johnny West in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He qualified #13 with a 6.02/237.21 at the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. Maple Grove hosted the Super Stock Magazine Nationals and Larson was there, running a 6.03/233.76 to qualify #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier (5.62) Kenny Bernstein. Larson smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.00/144.69 that lost to Kenny's 5.75/254. In late June he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. Only twelve cars showed for the sixteen-car show so qualifying wasn't a problem. Bruce ran a 6.12/240.12 to qualify #11. But in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off, losing to Billy Meyer's ailing 9.22/91. On July 2, Englishtown held its Funny Car Spectacular. Larson lost to West's 5.78/258 in the first round, with a 6.31/184.04, but he got back in on the "break rule." So in round two he ran Roy Harris, but Bruce had problems and shut off to a 9.10-86.04 that lost to Roy's 6.39/180. He was back at Englishtown on July 13 for the NHRA Summernationals where he ran a 5.99/243.11 to qualify on the "bump." In the first round, he lost to Tom Hoover. On August 3, he competed at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. He qualified #8 with a 6.20 in the sixteen-car show. He lost to Scott Kalitta in the first round. The following week (August 9), he was at the US Funny Car Nationals where he ran a 6.19/236.22 to qualify #6 in the six car show. He lost early. At Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals, his best of 6.07/237.59 was good for the sixth alternate spot. He also attempted to make the show at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, but he had problems and failed to qualify with a 7.32/118.18 best. In the season long NHRA points chase he finished #19. |

Notes: Talk about a bad way to start your new year. John was in Tucson in January for the AHRA Winternationals. On Friday the 13th, he crashed his Camaro into the guardrail during qualifying. He was OK, but the car was not as he failed to qualify. The damage was not too bad as he had the car running at Firebird Raceway at the end of the month for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He didn't reach the finals there, but he ran well enough to beat the "Hawaiian" with Mike Dunn onboard. He was one of four cars running at Sacramento's East-West meet, where he was declared the winner after beating Gary Densham, who had his reverser explode in the final. At Pomona, his 5.92/249.30 qualified #9. He and Kenny Bernstein had a close first-round race that saw Force's 5.89/247.93 come out on top over Kenny's 5.90/251. He got to solo in round two when Don Prudhomme shut off with problems. John advanced with a 5.92/249.30. In the semi-finals, he lost a tire-smoking dual with Al Segrini. He stopped at Carlsbad and drove the "L.A. Hooker" in an eight-car show but lost to Bryan Ranes in the opening round. The week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. His 6.19/239.36 qualified #6. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.54 in a loss to Segrini's 5.88. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.89/247.93. Once again, the car went up in smoke, but his 6.55/245.90 still beat Tim Grose, who blew an engine at 6.79/142. In round two, he lost to John Collins. The following week (March 25), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Qualifying wasn't a problem as only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Force ran 5.95 for the #5 spot in the field. In round one, a 5.96/242.55 beat Jim Head, but a 6.00/241 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.93/241 in round two. Things did not go too well at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where Force failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. In the first week of May, he was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coors 32 car show. Denny Savage was supposed to run John in the final but he had hurt his engine and Gary Thompson took his place. It didn't make a difference to Force, who had set Low ET at 5.98 and then ran 6.07 for the victory. He then won the Bakersfield March Meet that was now held in May. He "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.98, but he beat low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round with a 5.95/245. He smoked the tires in the final, but his 6.49/239 held up to win over a crossed-up Tom McEwen. John also ran 5.80 at ADRA Eunice LA in 9/84, 5.92/245.90 at Gary US 30, and 5.94/252.80 at ADRA Dragway 42 1984. Photo from Indy 1984. | Ran 5.76 over Jim Dunn's 6.02 at a Carlsbad match race in May 1984. Frazier and Force were surprising non-qualifiers at Indy, running 5.958/249.30 against a 5.939 bump spot. - Joe Moore |

Notes: For the 1966 season, this car was lengthened 18 inches and fiberglass front end and doors were added, changing the weight of the car to 3,195 lbs. with a TorqueFlite transmission. Best time for this car was 177 mph and 9.43. | Bob faced Darrell Droke for a best of three match at Detroit. He lost the match to the blown Mustang, but did run a best of 10.19/150.50. The following week (April 24), Sullivan was at Minneapolis to make three exhibition runs. He went up in smoke on all three passes and ran times of 11.12/157.89, 10.77/157.89, and 11.23/150. On June 3, he was at Columbus for a best of three match against Bruce Larson. Sullivan was having magneto problems and it didn't help in the match as Larson got out first in the first two races and won the match despite the Barracuda's better times. Sullivan’s best was 10.02/148.06 compared to Bruce's 10.11/141.; Photo: Hot Rod, Archive Series No. 5, Hemi Power (winter 2007): p. 63 - MB |

Notes: The "Chi-Town" bunch needed a new driver for '80 as their driver, Pete Williams, left at the end of '79. Austin Coil contacted Simon Menzies for the job, but Simon was unable to tour, so he recommended Frank Hawley. Coil decided to give Frank a try. Hawley went to Chicago to audition for the job, and his first race was to be a best of three match against Kenny Safford at US 30, Gary, Indiana. He won the match three straight. Since he still didn't have a fuel funny car license, Safford was the first to sign his license. After this, Hawley asked Coil if he had the job. Austin replied, "for another week." This continued for the next two years until they won the NHRA World Championship in '82. Then he was hired. The team ran at Union Grove a lot. Frank made it into the semifinals at the Olympics of Drag Racing in May before losing to Don Prudhomme. At the NHRA Division 3 race at Union Grove, Hawley finished runner-up to Tom Hoover. The team attempted to qualify at the PHR Championships, but a best of 6.56 left them as the seventh alternate for the show. |

Notes: Shumake started the season at OCIR's Super Bowl, where he ran second Low ET with a 6.77 and was supposed to face John Lombardo for the title, but breakage kept him from running, and Raymond Beadle took his place in the final. At Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 6.58. As attested by his first-round win over Tom Hoover, Traction was poor with a 7.08/211 beating Tom's 7.23/202. He lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Tripp qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.157 (at 234.37) held for Low ET. A first-round 6.59/218 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.33/212. He then went to Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. A 6.23 (Low ET) at 232.55 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he raced Simon Menzies' alcohol burner and beat his 7.37 by almost a second with a 6.40/226.13. A second-round 6.46/224.43 beat a crossed-up Bob Pickett, and in the semifinals, he ran 6.36/231.36 over a tire-smoking John Collins. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and, for a change, the "Snake" was the underdog as Tripp's times in eliminations were about a tenth better. Sure enough, Don tried too hard, and he smoked the tires and shut off in the final while Tripp ran 6.75/218.44 for the victory. At the Gatornationals, he qualified #7 with a 6.37/237.46. A first-round 6.40/232.55 beat Ed McCulloch, but in round two, his 6.44 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.37. A week after that (March 19), Tripp was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener. His 6.52/207.37 qualified #1, and as the field was short, he got the "odd-lot" solo in round one and advanced with a 9.89/91.64. Tripp was late off the line in his semifinal race against Tom Hoover. He tried so hard to catch Tom he set speed with his 6.78/224.43 losing to Hoover's 6.80/205. At the Bakersfield March Meet, he did not get a speed on his qualifying run, but his 6.07 was second only to Prudhomme's 6.00. A 6.23/227.84 defeated Gary Cochran, who lost a blower belt in the opening round. Bryan Raines ailing 6.70/200 in the second round, lost to his 6.44/223.88. He got another easy pass in the semifinal when Dave Condit broke. Tripp still ran 6.22/230.76. He faced Denny Savage in the final, and Savage was tough. He had also won his semifinal race with a 6.22 and qualified #3 with a 6.09. Savage came through in the final, running 6.21/214 to win over Shumake's 6.30/226.70. In April, he competed at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.50/222.77, forcing him to run low qualifier Lombardo in the opening round of eliminations. Both smoked the tires, and John's 6.51/231 lost to Shumake's 6.54/226.70. Another tire-smoking 6.92/200.44 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.52/227. Shortly after that, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.74 and another 6.74 at 219.50 beat Randy Lackey in the first round. Tripp then set Low ET with a 6.71/218.76 in the semifinals to beat Hoover's close 6.73/216. He faced Gene Snow in the final, and a 6.79/218.44 won the race over the "Snowman's" 6.90/217. On May 13, he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division Seven race. A 6.23 qualified #5, which meant he had to run low qualifier Prudhomme in the opening round. It wasn't much of a race as the "Snake's" 6.04/240 easily covered Tripp's 6.38/231.95. He made up for that by winning the NHRA Division 3 race at Edgewater on May 21. It wasn't much of a race, as only two FCs showed. His final round 6.48/223.32 (Top Speed) beat Steve Stephens there. Tripp had earlier run 6.44 in qualifying for Low ET as well. His next stop was at Bandimere on June 3 for the NHRA Division Five race. His 6.72/213.27 in qualifying stood for Low ET and Top Speed. With the field being short, he got a solo in round one. He crossed the centerline and was disqualified in his race against Danny Pickett in the semifinal. I loved his words after the fact, "After the third time I crossed the centerline, I figured that they must have saw me, so I shut off." At the NHRA Springnationals, a 6.22/226.70 qualified #7. He improved to 6.15/232.55 in the opening round to beat Al Segrini's 6.29/223, and a 6.22/226.13 trailered Burgin's 6.40/230 in round two. But despite running a strong 6.17/230.76 in the semifinals, he lost to Prudhomme's Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.07/241. The following week (June 18), found Tripp at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He had some bad luck qualifying when he had a blower explode, a two-speed transmission fail, and a rear-end break. After getting everything straightened out, he ran a 6.35/234.37 to qualify #3. After all that work, he popped another blower in the first round and lost to Roger Lindamood. Shumake did not compete at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Johnny Loper took delivery of a new Sarte-built Arrow on August 8. They ran the old car at Beeline Dragway for the Gold Cup Funny Car Championships. Tripp won his final race in the "old car," running a best of 6.60/220 and stopping Henry Harrison in the final. The new car debuted at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Things didn't start too well, as, on one qualifying attempt, the new car turned into a fireball when the motor blew. The team got things going and managed to qualify #6 with a 6.09/237.46. An opening round 6.22/229.59 defeated Dale Pulde's 6.34/228. But he faced Prudhomme in round two, and once again, it was like hitting a wall; his 6.32/193.13 lost to Don's 6.04/243. The following week (September 10), he was back at Beeline for the NHRA Division Seven final. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.68 and a shutoff 9.56/96.96 in the opening round lost to Billy Meyer's 7.03/214. The team had another bad outing at OCIR for the Dr. Pepper Funny Car Championships. All cars were to make two passes, and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. Tripp's troubled 7.08 beat Pulde's equally troubled 7.11 in his first race, and he was not even able to race John Force in the second race as his 'chute fell out on the line. Confirmed NHRA bests of 6.097 at Indy and 237.46 at the Gators and Indy. |

Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64 car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division Six opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: Ed was at Fremont for its Nitro Bowl early in January. All cars there were to run three rounds with the winner based on the number of wins in the competition. Ed won his first race with a 6.60/218.44 (Top Speed) over Dale Pulde's 6.87/155 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In round two, his 6.62 beat Jake Johnston, who got out of shape and shut off in the "Pisano-Matsubara" car. But in his final run, he ran his best ET, and it wasn't good enough. His 6.52 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.51, and McEwen's win gave him the title as he won all three of his races. Ed then went to OCIR for its season opener, where once again he set Top Speed, this time at 217.91, but lost to Johnston in round two. He did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, nor was he at Beeline for the NHRA Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.24/225.56 and an opening-round 6.37/210.28 beat John Lombardo. A second-round 6.32/220.58 beat a tire-shaking Tripp Shumake, and in the semifinals, he broke a throttle linkage and slowed to 9.75 but lucked out as opponent Gene Snow fouled. He then faced Don Prudhomme in the final, and despite running a good 6.36/223.88, he still finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.26/227. He then went to OCIR for its East vs. West Meet, and while he didn't win, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/232.55. Early in March, Irwindale held its Night Opener. Eight cars made two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ed was nowhere near running quick enough to reach the final. In his first race, both he and Lombardo smoked the tires with the "Ace's" 7.40 coming out on top. He again smoked the hides in his second race, finally backing out of it to 13.15, while eventual winner McEwen won with a 6.67. McCulloch ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Jim Dunn. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He competed at the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race on March 20.27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.50 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.61/200.44 beat Mike Halloran who broke. In the second round, his 6.43/211.76 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.32/182. A week later, McCulloch was at Fremont for the NHRA Division Seven Opener. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.50/227.84. In the first round, he got a solo as Steve Leach had crashed in qualifying. Ed advanced with a 6.63/196.93. But in round two, he had problems against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and his shut off 12.41 lost to Jim's strong 6.19. On the Fourth of July weekend Ed was entered in the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Ed beat a broken Larry Gould while breaking himself on the run. Ed’s best NHRA national event times were 6.161/237.46 at Indy. Did Ed run 6.15 somewhere this year? | Indy runs were in the new Foster/Hume car debuted that August. In the pictured '75-'76 car, he also won the SIR Funny Car opener in early April with a 6.46 over Mike Miller's Boredom Zero Mustang II. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Russell was runner-up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham on April 4. He beat Ray Sherman in the semifinals with a 6.84/208.33, but his final round 6.90/197.80 lost to the "Max's" 6.38/226. At the next IHRA event, the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on May 2, he repeated that finish. Even the victor was the same as Beadle's 6.36/216 beat Russell's 6.82/164.80. Earlier, Long ran 7.14 and 6.81 to reach the final. Sacramento held an Funny Car race and Long picked up the victory there. His final round 6.31/221 beat Dave Condit's 6.37/221 in the "L. A. Hooker." The team also competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals at Atlanta, but Russell lost early there. At the end of July, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. All the cars made two runs and Russell ran 6.58 and 6.71. | We need to confirm that Russell ran 6.18/237 this year (or is that a mistaken duplication of Ron Colson’s similar numbers?) |
