Notes: First funny car in the fours. First member of the Castrol 4-Second Club for Funny Cars on October 1/1993, with a 4.987 at the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals in Topeka, Kan. Terrible & terrific year in 1993: crew chief Yingst died during NHRA Slick 50 Nats in Spring, rebounded to make historic pass in Fall. Photo from Columbus 1993. | Chuck started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.14/285.44, but in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Del Worsham. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, his 5.41/265.01 qualified #10. He improved to 5.22/272.39 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.15/287. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Slick 50 Nationals. Etchells qualified #5 with a 5.16/270.59 and in round one, his 5.14/286.35 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.46/275. In the second round, both he and Cruz Pedregon ran 5.22 (Chuck at 276.83), but Cruz crossed the finish line first. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, Chuck ran 5.30/277.86 to qualify #8. His 5.21/274.30 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.28/281 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, but he broke against Hofmann in round two. He went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational and qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.27/266.03. But in the first round, while faced Bonin, Chuck did his burnout and then was unable to back up after his reverser failed. After having such a rough time in the first few events, things went a little more his way at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.09 at 291.07. In the first round Caminito fouled against him and Etchells advanced with a 6.05/167.09. Round two saw Whit Bazemore fail to show and Chuck soloed to a 5.26/271.41. In the semifinals, he and his opponent, Freddie Neely smoked the tires with Chuck recovering first with a 5.49/265.95 over Freddie's 5.69/262. This put him into the final against Force. Unfortunately, John got the victory. The sixth NHRA race of the season was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Etchells qualified #4 for the show with a 5.29/277.60. An easy 5.66/207.75 in round one, beat Brent Fanning, but in round two he lost a close race to Bonin. Gordie's 5.26/285 nipped his 5.27/274.97. At the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, Chuck qualified #2 with a 5.04/288.46 just behind Force's 5.01/289. Etchells beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.18/281.69 while in round two his 5.22/279.32 took out Kenji Okazaki. A semifinal 5.27/265.17 topped Tom Hoover's close 5.30/283 and moved him into the final against Force. Once again, John stopped him in the final. Force won with a 5.14/290 while Etchells was busy smoking his tires to an 8.01/104.69 for the runner-up spot. On May 28 these two faced off in a best of three match race at the 1/8 mile Lancaster track. Things didn't go well for Etchells as he lost two straight with times of 4.13/170 and 3.92/178 while Force ran a best of 3.73. Repeated his 299.50 from Topeka at when he set Top Speed at Ennis Fall 1993.

Notes: Raymond won his first championship in 1979. He had two wins and three runner-up finishes. Photo from Byron Dragway's Manufacturer's Meet. Did Raymond run 5.96 somewhere this year? Confirmed 5.996/244.56 NHRA bests at Indy US Nationals 9/79. | Beadle started the season by qualifying #1 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. The team made it into the semifinals before losing to Gary Burgin. At the NHRA Winternationals, they again qualified #1. This time with a 6.07 that held up for Low ET. Beadle then ran 6.18, 6.17, and 6.27 to reach the final to run Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, Raymond smoked the tires and lost to Hoover's 6.29. The "Blue Max" qualified well at the next NHRA race, the Gatornationals, where a 6.18 qualified #2. Beadle's best run in eliminations was a first-round 6.21, but in round two, a 6.69/226 beat Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in a twin tire smoker. The "Max" broke in the semifinals, giving Gordie Bonin a free ride into the finals. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where a 6.05/240.00 (Low ET & Top Speed) qualified #1. But in round one, Beadle smoked the tires to a 7.01 loss against Dale Pulde's 6.32. Things went their way at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. There Beadle qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.13. A first-round 6.17 advanced when Frank Oglesby broke, and in the semifinals, a 6.16/233.16 beat Shirl Greer. In the finals, he unloaded a 6.09/238.09 (Low ET & Top Speed) for the win over Paul Smith's runner-up 6.37/190. The NHRA Cajun Nationals featured an eight-car field as well. Beadle qualified #2 with a 6.30/234.37. He beat Hoover's 6.44/223 in the first round, with a 6.37/229.00, but in the semifinals, a bad coil wire kept the "Max" from firing, and John Force got a free ride into the final. Raymond made it into the finals at the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.13/238.09. In the opening round, another 6.13 at 231.95 beat Dick Rosberg's 6.35/212. In round two, his 6.61/223.88 beat a tire-smoking Jim Adolph. The semifinals saw Raymond make an easy pass when Colson broke on the line. He faced Burgin in the final, but his 6.69/207.37 was good for the runner-up spot to Gary's 6.49/239. The team then went to Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. Both he and Burgin broke in the first round, with Beadle coasting through first for the win. Unfortunately, the "Blue Max" could not run in the semifinals and was replaced by Tom Prock. From there, the team went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Once again, Beadle qualified #2, with a 6.18/234.98. A first-round 6.37 beat Pete Williams' 6.61 in the "Chi-Town Hustler," but a semifinal 6.87 lost to Pulde's 6.49. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals in late June, Ray qualified #7 in the eight-car field and then ran a great 6.31 in the first round over Simon Menzies. He made it into the final, where he faced Billy Meyer. The "Blue Max" slowed to an off-pace 6.86 to take the runner-up spot to Meyer's 6.51. Beadle took a win at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown on July 15. He qualified #4 in the show with a 6.18/230.76. He beat Meyer in the first round with a 6.17, and a second-round 6.09/233.16 beat Pulde's 6.11/236. In the semifinals, Raymond's 6.18/235 beat Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's car. In the final, he ran Force's Corvette. Beadle's 6.37/232.55 took his third NHRA National event victory over John's 6.46/212. The team did not race at the NHRA Grandnationals.

Notes: Radici failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals and the NHRA Gatornationals (need confirmation of this - I don't see Paul on either non-qualifier list. - BP). He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at the end of March. It was a 32 car field, and in the opening round, he beat Neil Leffler. He lost to Pat Foster in round two, who was driving the "Keeling and Clayton" car. Paul was at Portland in July for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. Unfortunately, his late 6.89 in the opening round lost to Don Rae's 6.96. He got back in for round two, but this time his 7.09 lost to Dale Pulde's 6.54 in the "Plueger & Gyger" car. Paul qualified #12 at Seattle for the Fallnationals with a 6.705/210.28. He lost to Ed McCulloch in round one, 6.64/222 to 7.108/212.76. Bill saw this car run at the Coke circuit race at Dragway 42 in the Summer of 1975. He sent them a rendering of their car, and they asked him to design their paint scheme for 1976. Unfortunately, they did not come out until late that year and did not use a patriotic scheme as they had planned. Still, it was great to get a hand-written note with the request from Dave Wise!

Notes: Sunday October 12/1975: The "Snake" makes history on a pit lane drag strip no less, at Ontario: 5.987 at 237.46 in the semis against Raymond Beadle at the Winston World Finals. Also went 241.53 for the sport's first 240 fuel FC. - Ricko. | Strange thing about the 241. It was not possible on the 3 decimal clocks of the day, which only displayed 241.28 and 241.93. It is likely that Prudhomme actually ran 241.93, but the clock was misread as 241.53. Inaugural member of the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. Won 6 of 8 NHRA National events in '75 - biggest loss was Indy to Beadle and the Blue Max. | Started the '75 season with the 'Cuda, but the Monza debuted at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. Things didn't start so well for the Monza. First off, the tow rig broke down outside of Phoenix and had to be towed in. Then once it arrived, Don went to make the car's first pass ever and the rear end broke. After getting it fixed, he ran a 6.40 to qualify #3. He lasted until round two where the Monza got crossed up and lost to Billy Meyer driving Gene Snow's Vega. With the bad luck behind him, Don towed into Pomona for the Winternationals where he ran a 6.25/228.42 to qualify #2. In the first round, he beat Meyer's tire smoking 8.15 with a 6.39/189.87. In round two, a 6.37 beat Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's potent Mustang. In the semifinals, a 6.28/212.76 beat Charlie Therwhanger in Mickey Thompson's Grand Am. He picked up his first win of the year with the Monza with a 6.24/226.70 in the final over Mike Miller who broke in Jim Green's "Green Elephant" Vega. On March 2, Prudhomme shocked everyone when he laid down a 6.08/235.60 to qualify first at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. The times were good for Low ET and Top Speed as well as new track records. But after qualifying, his times weren't so good. He singled in the first round, with an easy pass when Gary Burgin's Mustang II broke. In round two, a 6.51/212 beat Leroy Chadderton's quicker 6.48/222. A tire smoking 7.91 in the semifinals beat John Lombardo. And in the final, he ran a 7.17/141.28 to take the runner-up spot to Dale Pulde's 6.53/196 in the "Eastern Raider" Mustang II. At Gainesville for the Gatornationals, Don got the pole with a 6.39 (Low ET) at 205.47. Tommy Grove's Mustang lost to Prudhomme's 6.61 in the first round, and Tom Raley's Vega lost to the Monza's 6.53/198.23 in round two. A semifinal 6.87/167 advanced to the finals when Shirl Greer got out of shape. In the final, Don got his second NHRA national event win of the year with a 6.52/172.74 getting the win over Tom Prock whose "Custom Body" Dart broke a rear end. Portland held the Seattle Opener and Prudhomme made it into the final before losing to Ed McCulloch. At the NHRA Division 6 Opener on May 31 at Seattle, Don qualified #1, set Low ET, and won the race over McCulloch who broke in the final. Don went 3 for 3 at NHRA's third national event of the year, the Springnationals at National Trail. He ran Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 and then ran 6.31/200.44 over Jim Liberman's 6.59, a 6.40/219.51 over Jim Nicoll's 6.56, and a 6.84 over Greer in the semifinals when they both smoked the tires. In the final he ran Raymond Beadle behind the wheel of the "Blue Max." It was an interesting final when the "Max" had its Mustang II body come unhinged and blow off shortly after leaving the line. Don went on to score a 6.46 victory. Beadle got back at Prudhomme at the third Division 3 race at Cincinnati when he beat Don in the final with a 6.43/219 over the Monza's 7.19/147.29. He was runner-up at the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove on June 21 as well. He qualified #1 with a 6.53 and made his way into the final to run Harlan Thompson in the "Fireball Vega. Harlan ran a Low ET and Top Speed 6.36/222 to beat Prudhomme for the victory. He lost his first NHRA national event of the year at the Summernationals on July 13. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.22/205.01. But in the first round, he got crossed up and shut off to a 9.55/89.46 against Tom McEwen. Don wasn't down long as he picked up his fourth NHRA National event win of the season at the Grandnationals in Canada on August 16. Once again, he qualified #1 with a 6.46/207.37. He beat Burgin in the first round, with a 6.47/212.26 and in the semifinal, a 6.59/222.22 beat Bob Pickett. In the final he ran Prock again. Don set Low ET in the final with a 6.45/224.43 getting the win. He won the fourth Division 1 race at Maryland International, as a final round 6.79/225.00 (Top Speed) beat Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang II. Another win was added to his long list when he won the PHR Championships at US 131 Martin, Michigan. He qualified #1 with a 6.28/233.76 then ran 6.12/213.27 to beat Greer's Mustang II in the first round. A semifinal 6.28/220.04 beat Denny Savage in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final he ran a 6.12/222.77 to beat Vic Cecelia's 6.35/225 in Charlie Proite's "Telstar." Prudhomme and Beadle staged their own little war at the NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis. They qualified #1 and second with Don's 6.17/232.55 (Top Speed) getting the #2 spot. In the first round, Don beat Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee" with a 6.16. In the second round, a 6.21 beat Pulde's 6.94 in the "Arizona Wildcat" and in the semifinals, a 6.45 beat Pickett's tire smoking 7.89 in Mickey Thompson's car. In the final, Prudhomme got beat. Raymond shot to a 6.16/226 for the win over the "Snake's" 6.26/224.44. After that, Don went to Portland International for the NHRA Division 6 final. He qualified #1 with a 6.44/196.50 and advanced past the first-round with a 6.69/175.78 when Miller broke in the "Green Elephant." A semifinal 6.20/193.96 beat Rich Rogers and in the final, he unleashed Low ET with a 6.12/211.76 getting the win over Gordie Bonin.

Notes: AKA Chain Lightning. 1974 NHRA World Champion by winning the World Finals after a severe fire in qualifying. Seemingly half the Funny Car pits helped to reconstruct the badly damaged Mustang to enable Shirl to defeat Don Prudhomme for the championship. The following year, the year-long Winston Points championships began, ending the "Super Bowl"-style "win one race, and you're the champion" method of selecting the world champ. | The Mach I Chain Lightning Mustang was started by Chuck Finders & completed by Cecil Hicks. — Brian Greer | Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. | Ran 6.71 at Gainesville, 6.51 at Columbus, 6.55 at Englishtown, 6.47 at Ontario, and 6.41 at KCIR. | Shirl had been around since before the term "funny car" was used. But '74 was a great year for him. He started the season by qualifying #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.71, but he lost early. He followed that up with a win at the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace, where his final round 6.85/175.78 got the victory when Frank Oglesby broke. On March 31, Greer was at Charlotte Speedway for the IHRA Southern Nationals. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Shirl's 4.44 qualified #1 for the eight-car show. Raymond Beadle broke against him in the first round, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 4.42/173.07 in the semifinals beat Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final, he faced Ken Safford driving the "Mr. Norm" car and lost. He qualified #5 at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships with a 6.92/203.16, but he failed to reach the finals. Another win came at Lakeland for the NHRA Division 2 Opener held there in May. He stopped Pete Miner in the final. Greer then went to Suffolk for the NHRA Division 2 race, where Miner got revenge by beating him in the first round. A 6.51/212.44 qualified #5 at the NHRA Springnationals, debuting his first aluminum block. But a first-round 6.60/206.42 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.62/220. His next stop was at Blaney in South Carolina for the third NHRA Division 2 race. He won that race with a final round 6.80/204.30 that beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.70/217 in the "Fireball Vega." At Bristol, 35 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car field at the IHRA Springnationals. Greer qualified #3 with a 6.56. He beat Smith in round one, with a 6.61/200.00, and in round two, his 6.58/194.80 beat Miner's 6.78/206. He lost a motor against Billy Meyer in the semifinals, and the Mustang went up in flames. It was minor damage, and he was OK. He qualified #1 at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Mid-America Dragway but failed to reach the finals. Shirl qualified #1 again at Kansas City International for the AHRA Drag Nationals. A 6.41/221.13 got him the spot. His 6.50/220.04 lost to a quick-leaving Ed McCulloch in the first round, at 6.53/222. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #13 with a 6.65, but he picked up to 6.55/216.34 in the first round, to beat Russell Long's 6.65/214. Unfortunately, his car failed to fire against Don Prudhomme in round two. Greer got his first NHRA National event victory at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He ran 6.58/209.79 to qualify #2. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.61 beat Pee Wee Wallace. In the semifinals, he picked up to 6.52/207.85 to take out Al Segrini's 6.69/217. In the final, he faced Kosty Ivanof, who broke. Greer ran Low ET with a 6.511 at 198.67 for the victory. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships the following week. Sixteen cars ran the first-round with the eight lowest ETs regardless of winning or losing times advancing into round two. Shirl's 6.46/217.91 was the quickest time of the first-round. In round two, Gordie Bonin stepped up to 6.42/225 to beat his 6.50/215.31. He failed to qualify at the NHRA US Nationals, but he won the NHRA Division 2 final at Gainesville. A final round 6.81/203.16 beat Jerry Gwynn. He was back at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open, where he didn't reach the finals, but he set Top Speed at 212.76. Shirl won IHRA's next event, the All-American at Bristol, on September 29. He qualified #12, and he beat Gene Snow in the first round, but in round two, he lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.41 with a 6.64. Fortunately for Greer, Leavitt hurt his engine on the run, and Greer was reinstated on the "break rule." Shirl capitalized on his second chance by running 6.45 in the semifinals to beat Tom Hoover. In the final, his quicker-leaving 6.49/222.22 beat Smith's 6.47/221 for his first IHRA victory. Then came his dramatic NHRA World Finals race. Greer was fighting for the Points Championship with Smith, who was leading going into this race, Frank Hall, and Don Prudhomme. Smith and Hall were eliminated when neither was able to qualify, so that left it between him and Prudhomme. Greer had already qualified for the race with a 6.47/212.26, but he attempted to improve his time with another qualifying run. The car erupted into a ball of fire on the pass when the motor let go. It was the worst fire of the event, and there were plenty of fires at this race. Greer suffered burns on his face, hands, and arms. The car was presumed a total loss, but while Shirl was at the hospital, his crew as well as the teams from the "Fireball Vega" and the "Eastern Raider" took the smoldering remains of the Mustang to Steve Montrelli's shop and rebuilt the car. They called Greer at the hospital and told him they thought they could get it fixed. He told them that if they could fix it, he would see about getting out of the hospital to run. He had to sign a release from the hospital stating that they were not liable for him. Shirl got to the track with his hands bandaged up. NHRA required him to make a half-pass check-out run. His firesuit had been burned, so he borrowed Al Hanna's. He had more problems putting a pair of fire gloves on. They wouldn't fit over his bandages. Prudhomme happened to stop by to see how Greer was, and he suggested putting on work gloves and then hitting the fire gloves on over them. Don even went over to his pit to get him the gloves. It worked. Going into eliminations, Greer held a 260 point advantage over Prudhomme. He had to last at least as many rounds as the "Snake" to win the championship. Greer beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, and once again, the car was on fire. Shirl got it stopped, and the fire was extinguished. Prudhomme beat Gene Snow. Round two started, and Greer was in line to race Jim Dunn, but he watched as Dale Pulde dropped the "Snake" with a 6.16. At this point, they saw that the championship was theirs, and they called it quits. Why push lady luck anymore. You would think that would bring his season to a close, but he still raced at the Irwindale Team Funny Car Championships, where he showed up with a Mustang II in primer. Ironically, he lost to Prudhomme in the first round. | Best NHRA times were 6.471 at the World Finals and 216.34 at the Summernationals. Formerly listed 6.38/225 times, but cannot find evidence of those times in 1974. Please let us know if you have that.

Notes: Times and info from National Dragster, 8/23/74. | This team spent most of its time on the match race trail. They figured there was not a lot of money to be made at NHRA events and preferred booked in shows. Colson really ran well at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.62/214.79. During eliminations, he set Low ET at 6.50 and in the final, beat Raymond Beadle who was driving for Don Schumacher. The final wasn't pretty as his 7.28/226.70 (Top Speed) beat Beadle's equally troubled 7.38/220 for the victory. The team was at Bristol in June for the IHRA Springnationals where 35 cars attempted to qualify for the sixteen-car show. Ron’s 6.57 qualified #5 and he improved to 6.51/222.77 in the first round, to beat Beadle's 6.78/193. But in round two, eventual winner Billy Meyer ran 6.37/218 to beat Colson's 6.53/218.97. Colson got some revenge on Meyer at the next IHRA event, the Northern Nationals held at Mid-America Dragway on June 30. There, he stopped Billy in the final although Meyer sort of handed the win to the "Chi-Town" bunch when he had to shut off on the line when his headers fell off. Colson ran 7.31/216.86 for the win after earlier posting Top Speed at 222.58. The "Chi-Town Hustler" team always made a point in running at the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The race was run with all cars running the first-round and the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. In the qualifying round, Colson ran 6.63/217.39. This was enough to advance into the second round where both he and "Jungle Jim" Liberman got out of shape. Ron’s 7.26/189.87 beat Jim's 7.81/197. The semifinals saw Colson run 6.49/211.26 to stop Jim Nicoll at 6.90/154. This moved him into the final against Don Prudhomme. Don was running really well with times of 6.52, 6.30, and 6.35 to reach the final. Colson's crew chief, Austin Coil, must have added some clutch for the final as the Charger went into a huge wheelstand that crashed down hard, busting their oil pan. Prudhomme was long gone with a 6.49 for the victory. Ron also ran well at the IHRA US Open. He qualified #8 and made his way to the semifinals, where a motor blowing 6.56 beat Denny Savage's 6.85 in the "Hawaiian.” Unfortunately, the team was unable to repair in time and Savage was reinstated for the final. Colson also had problems at the IHRA All-American race at Bristol. He qualified for the show, but broke a set of titanium pistons. Alternate Larry Gould took their place in the field.
