Notes: After Ford pulled the plug on its racing support early in '70, the Ford racers were forced to "go it alone" for the season. Up until the axing of its racing operations, Ford was still doing well in drag racing. But this was a severe blow as Ford had asked Kalitta to sort out its Boss 429 for fuel racing. The car was not responding well with the 429, and at numerous races, he reverted to the 427 SOHC to stay competitive. Parts for that engine were now scarce, so after Ford bailed, he switched to a 426 Hemi to power his TF dragster and the Mustang FC. In one of its earliest outings with the Hemi, Kalitta was at New York National Speedway in mid-May for its Springnationals. His 8.59 beat Arnold Arnold in the "Super Cuda," which had transmission trouble in the first round. Rain disrupted the race, and in between, they kept trying to run it until finally completing it on Sunday, May 24. Conrad did not reach the final; he had transmission problems himself, and his best pass was 7.92/179.09. Maple Grove held a sixteen-car show on Wednesday, August 12. Kalitta lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the second round. Conrad was at Tri-City in September for an eight-car show. He soloed in the first round with an 8.12/123.62 when the "Hawaiian" broke on the line. In the semifinals, his 7.43/173.74 beat Roger Lindamood. In the final, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Pat got the win when Kalitta lost a clutch to the line. We need confirmation of the listed 6.93. (See the other entry for the Boss 429 times).

Notes: Dick Poll was hired to drive the Gas Ronda Mustang for '70. Not much news was made by the team, and it faded late in '70. Gas Ronda ran the Irwindale New Year's Day race and beat Dave Beebe in the first round with a 7.43/196.06. A second-round wheelstand ended his chances against Johnny Wright. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on January 4, Gas qualified eighth with a 7.60, but he blew his transmission, and non-qualifier Don Schumacher took his place in the race. At the second OCIR All-Pro race, Ronda was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he failed to better the 7.57 "bump." On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, Ronda took his last ride in a Funny Car during qualifying; a transmission exploded near the end of a run, and he was severely burnt. He had third-degree burns to over 30% of his body. Ronda was taken to Orange Country Medical Centre. He survived, but that was it for Fuel Funny Cars for Gas Ronda. Jim Tice chose to hold a benefit race at Beeline Dragway on April 11 to help raise funds for Ronda. Tice's words, "It is inconceivable to me that a man that has made the contribution to our sport over the last ten years such as Gas Ronda has, should possibly wind up his career with only unpaid bills to show for it." Contributions poured in; the first was from Kelsey Producy=ts, who was not even a sponsor of Ronda's. Ed Pink donated to the cause, as did Anton Racing Apparel, Logghe Competition, Quaker State, Dow Chemicals, B&M Transmissions, Goodyear, Cyclone Automotive, Conelec Fuel Pump, Bill Hielscher and Associates, JR Headers, and Carter Carburetors. It was good to see such an outpouring of support for Ronda. | Ronda retired after a career-ending fire at the AHRA Winter Nationals at Beeline Dragway, Arizona. This occurred in January 1970. Notes: The 1969 Chi-Town Hustler Dodge Charger was legendary for its long smoking burnouts and tough performance. The team claimed that the car had a 90 percent win-loss record in 1969. Minick did the driving, Austin Coil tuned the engine, and John Farkonas was the behind-the-scenes engineer. The car was built with an offset roll cage for the driver, one of the last funny cars built in that configuration. The Hustler ran a best of 6.96 in 1970 and ran 206 in 1969. US 30 ad claimed a 6.99/219 in 1970. Previously listed 198.23 in 1970. As tough as the car was in 1969, it became outdated by 1971, and a new car had to be built. (Photo provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info from Draglist.com). | A drag racing magazine dated from '70 (due to magazine lead time) claimed that by early '70, Minick had run a best ET of 7.02. The car used a homemade 120" chassis with a 1,600 hp 426 Hemi. American Racing Engines got the credit for building the motor. It used M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons along with an Engle cam. American Racing did the heads as well as the crankshaft. The transmission was a TorqueFlite, and the rear axle ratio was 3.54. The Charger body came from Fiberglass Ltd. | The "Chi-Town Hustler" team started the '70 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. The race featured six Funny Car's running round-robin style. Pat won all three of his races, first getting around a broken Kip Brundage in the "Parts Mart" Camaro with a 7.48/194.80 and then another 7.48 in a solo after Don Schumacher had blown a rear end in his first race and was unable to repair. In his third and final run, Minick really laid one down, running a 7.26/203.60 over a crossed-up Jim Liberman. Minick failed to qualify at the NHRA Winternationals. But he rebounded nicely on February 14, where he competed at Lions. Thirty cars tried to make the eight-car show. Pat not only made the show, but he also won the race with a final round 7.19/204.54 over Don Prudhomme. Earlier, he had beaten Dick Bourgeois in the first round, with a 7.32/201.79 and a 7.37/200.88 beat Liberman in the semifinals. Minick won the Fremont Northern Nationals the next day (February 15). He ran 7.34/200.88 and 7.41/200.88 in the first two rounds before setting Low ET with a 7.18 in the semifinal over Bourgeois' 7.39. In the final, he defeated Liberman's 7.39/200 with a 7.27/205.46. In April, he met Bobby Rowe in the Super Duster for a best two out of three match race at Miami-Hollywood. He beat Rowe in the first two races with times of 7.42/199.55 and 7.38/199.55, but a broken blower drive in the final race kept him from taking a clean sweep. Another match race was run at Capitol on April 17 against Johnny Wright in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. A track record 7.25/199.54 beat Wright in the first race, who fouled on a 7.66/181 run. Minick reset the track record to a 7.19 in his second race and tied the track speed record of 203.60 held by Tommy Grove as Wright fouled again. Johnny got a 7.85/175 win in the final race when Minick's transmission let go. In May, the team traveled way up North to Keystone Dragways near Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he ran a match race against Liberman. Pat beat Jim three straight, setting both ends of the track records with a 7.45/196.92. Shortly after this, the team stopped at Marion, South Dakota, for a best of three match against Marc Susman. Pat won all three races and ran a best of 7.65/188.66. The ET was a new track record. Minick beat Clare Sanders in the final at the UDRA Springnationals. He also won at Epping on June 30 over a 16-car field. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.39/199.10 before running an 8.48/180 in the final to win when Schumacher lost a trans. Pat competed at Capitol's King of King's Funny Car Invitational on July 11, but he fouled away a 7.25/201.34 in the first round. He then won an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat Sanders in the "Super Camaro" in the first round, with a 7.40/194.80, and another 7.40 at 200.00 beat Randy Walls in the semifinal. He saved his best for last when he ran Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 7.32/201.46 blast to beat Bryan Teal in Nelson Carter's Charger. Pat won his first race at the second annual Rockford Manufacturer's Meet by out driving Ron Rivero's quicker 7.48 with a 7.52/198.67, but he fouled out in his next two races. On August 2, Minick faced Leonard Hughes in a best two out of three match race at Atco. Pat won two straight with times of 7.44/195.65 and 7.18/199.11 to wrap up the match. The following weekend he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. All cars ran the first-round, with the eight lowest ET's advancing to the second round. Pat's 7.16/200.44 was the lowest ET in the first round, and he ran 199.11 in the second round over Teal. In the semifinal, he had some luck on his side when Gene Snow fouled away a Low ET and Top Speed 7.06/210.77. Still, Pat's 7.12/185.95 was strong. Larry Arnold lost fire in the final, and Pat motored to a 7.23/199.11 for the victory. Another victory came on August 30 at the Cordova World Series. Pat tied the track record there with a 7.11 Low ET run over Fred Goeske in the semifinals. The next day (August 31), he was at US 30, Gary, Indiana, where he beat Kenny Safford two straight in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Minick's best was a 7.17/218. On September 1, he won an eight-car show at Saginaw. He ran 7.17/204 over Clare Sanders, who lost fire. A 7.23 in the semifinals beat Terry Hedrick's 7.26 in the "Super Shaker." In the final, a 7.13 (Low ET) at 200 took the victory when Connie Kalitta lost a clutch in his Mustang.

Notes: Car featured "Flynn & Kushi" primary signage on door, replacing Bill Flynn's customary "Yankee Peddler" tag, which is radically downsized and moved to front fender. Photo from Connecticut Dragway 9/07/70. - RT | Bill faced Al Hanna's "Eastern Raider" on April 12 for a best of three match race at Maple Grove. Flynn's 7.84/185.18 won the first race when Hanna blew his engine. The back-up car of Al Phillips filled in for the last two races and Bill won both with runs of 8.00/185.94 and 7.71/186.72. A week later (April 19), he was up against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in another best of three match at Connecticut. Bill won the first two races with runs of 7.83/183.29 and 7.73/191.48 to sew up the match, but the two decided to make a third run for the fans. This time Bill lost his transmission on the line and Frank took a win with a 7.72/187. He ran really well at Maple Grove on June 20 for an eight-car show. In the first round, he ran a track record 7.15 at 198 while beating Tom Sneden's 7.45/196. But in the semifinals, his quicker 7.54/190 lost to Phil Castronovo's 7.56/191. Flynn was at Epping, N. H., on September 20 for the Fourth Annual New England Funny Car Nationals. It was a big 32 car show and Bill made it all the way into the semifinals. He started his day by beating the "Super Twister" with a 7.27/206.80. A 7.40/208 beat Sarge Arciero in the "Frantic Ford" in round two. He got crossed-up in the third round, but he still advanced with a 7.84/160 before losing to Jim Liberman's 7.37/207 in the semifinal with an ailing 11.40 time.

Notes: Torqueflite transmission. 1980 lbs. ready to run. Also 7.14 at 210 and 7.15 at 204. NED 214.28 was a track record and won the NE Funny Car Nats that year. | As far as I know, this car never ran with a Chevy engine. It used only a Chrysler Hemi as even in late '69, his Nova switched over to a Chrysler. I understand that his second car used a Rat motor. | Jim started the season at Fremont's New Year's Day Championships. There were six cars running and Liberman beat Kip Brundage in his first race with a 7.45/189. A 7.83/189.46 lost to his close friend Lew Arrington's 7.55/184 in the second race and in his third he got out of shape and shut off against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was at Irwindale on January 26 for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round, and his 8.82/177.68 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 7.69/184. He was still running his Nova when he failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The new Camaro was debuted at Lions on February 14. There were 30 cars attempting to qualify for the eight-car field and Liberman's 7.26 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 7.23. JJ soloed in the first round, with a 7.35 when Gene Conway broke, but he had problems in the semifinals and shut off to a 15.38 loss to eventual winner Minick. The following day (February 15), he was at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. Arrington lost a close first-round race to Liberman in his new Camaro. Jim's 7.57/195.22 beat Lew's 7.58/189.46. In round two, Jake Johnston fouled against him in "Blue Max" Mustang. He faced Tommy Grove's tough Cammer powered Mustang in the semifinals, but Grove broke so Jim advanced with a 7.43/200.44. This put him into the final against Minick. Once again, Pat got the better of him and JJ's 7.39/200.00 finished runner-up to Minick's 7.27/205. Early in '70, Jim bought up all of John Mazmanian's 392 Hemi motors and spare parts. In April, Liberman faced Don Schumacher in a best of three match at Capitol. Jim won two straight with times of 7.68/156.25 (over a fouling Schumacher), and 7.34/194.38. — Ron Howard

Notes: Jim Annin had Race Car Engineering build him this Challenger for the '70 season. The body for the car came from Fiberglass Trends. Keith Black built the 426 Hemi. Internals included M/T rods with Forgedtrue pistons, and Black's favorite, an Engle cam. Eagle was also responsible for the pushrods and lifters, but the rockers were stock. Black also ported and polished the heads and installed Donovan 2/1/4" intake and 2/1/8" exhaust valves. Larry Bowers built 21% overdriven GMC 6/71 that sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The 90% nitro was fed to the engine by Enderle injection. The 1,800 hp went through a B&M modified TorqueFlite transmission. Total weight for the car was 2,093 lbs. | Driver Mike Snively had a great year in Annin's Challenger. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified seventh with a 7.63. At the third OCIR All-Pro event, the car failed to fire for the first-round. At Bakersfield on March 8, he set Low ET at 7.63 before losing in the final. At the San Francisco National Open at Sears Point on March 15, Snively won the eight-car show with a final round 7.69/194.38 over Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian. On March 28, OCIR held a final All-Pro race and Mike's 7.57/196.50 and 7.37/200.44 got him into the semifinal where a 7.48/196.07 by Tom McEwen stopped his 7.51/191.00. Mike won the eight-car race on April 4 at Irwindale, setting Low ET at 7.35 and meeting Dave Beebe in the final. Both cars ran 7.65, but Snively prevailed. On April 18 at OCIR, Mike had Low ET and Top Speed at 7.29/201.34, but Ray Alley's 7.48/198.23 beat Mike's quicker 7.44/200.00 in round one. At OCIR's 32-car Big Four Championships on May 2, Snively ran 7.62/147.18, 7.95/153.58, and a Low ET and Top Speed shot of 7.21/205.01 before losing to Dave Beebe's 7.42/195.65 in the semis with a 7.59/196.50. Mike again set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.51/192.30 at NHRA's Division 7 race at Irwindale on May 23 and he defeated Ray Alley in the final with a 7.56/191.80. Another win came over a 16-car field on May 30 at the OCIR Funny Car 500. There he ran 7.48/200.00 for Top Speed of the meet, a second round 7.49/196.93 over Ed Lenarth, and a semifinal 7.51/188.67 over Dick Poll's 7.94/174 SOHC Mustang. In the final, Leroy Hales' Cougar broke so Mike singled to victory with a 7.41/195.22. Gene Snow's 7.20/207 beat Snively's 7.38/199 in round two at the NHRA Springnats. Yet another win came on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes race. Mike ran 7.44/174.75 and 7.33/187.89 to make the finals against Low ET car (7.25) Arnie Behling. In the final, Arnie fouled away a 7.41/202.70, but Mike's 7.26/203.61 was long gone for the win. The OCIR Nitro Championships on July 3 was next on Mike's list, but after running 7.41/183.29 and 7.46/180.36 he lost to Behling's 7.43/200 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda in the semifinal with a 7.67/194.38. At NHRA's third Division 7 Points race at Bakersfield on August 9, Mike set Low ET at 7.41, but lost to Ed McCulloch's Duster in the final. Mike lost in the first round, to Dale Armstrong on August 15 at the OCIR Anniversary Race, but Dale's car exploded in the lights and Mike got back in on the break rule. So, with a second chance, he ran a second round 7.37/188.28 over a fouling Dave Beebe. He got an easy ride into the final when Marv Eldridge broke in the semis, but Snively still ran a 7.44/201.34. But his best pass of the night, a 7.30/203.61 wasn't enough to stop Gene Conway's 7.18/206. At the fourth Division 7 race at Bonneville on August 23, he won, setting both Low ET and Top Speed at 7.29/200.36 before dropping Steve Bovan's Hemi-Camaro in the final with a 7.32/198.59 to Bovan's 7.89/182. On August 29 at OCIR, Snively qualified second with a 7.19 and then ran 7.33/204.54 and a career-best 7.12/205.47 in the semis to beat Gene Conway's quicker 7.10/202.70. In the final, Snively's 7.33/201.34 narrowly beat Dave Beebe's 7.34/197.36. Mike took another win at Irwindale at an eight-car show on September 12. He qualified #1 with a 7.41/198.66 and ran 7.31/174.75 and 7.35/201.78 to make the final against Gene Conway. Mike's 7.26/204.54 set Low ET and Top Speed, beating Conway's 7.45/177. At the Fremont Fall Championships on September 26, Mike again made it into the finals, running 7.02/211.76 and 7.03/203.63 to meet Rich Siroonian in the final. A 7.07/210.76 wasn't enough to stop Rich's 6.86/214.28 Low ET and Top Speed run. On October 10, OCIR held its East/West Championships and Mike qualified #1 in the western team with a 7.07. He ran another 7.07/208.33 in round one, over Dave Beebe (7.23/204.54), and a second round 7.32/201.34 beat John Collins' 7.47 in the Atlas Oil Tool car to meet Gene Conway for the Western final (winner goes against the winner of the East for the title). Conway's 7.19/198.67 beat Mike's 7.30/205.01. On November 14, Irwindale held a 32-car Funny Car show. Mike ran a 7.27/201.78 in round one, but a 6.95/194.80 by eventual winner Jim Dunn beat him in the second frame. On November 22 for the NHRA Supernationals, Mike qualified sixth with a 7.13 and beat Ed McCulloch in round one, with a 7.03/203. Dunn then beat him again in round two. Snively got a six at OCIR's final race for '70 on December 5. Snively ran a first-round 7.02/212.76 over Leroy Goldstein's 7.09/211.76 in the Ramchargers Challenger. A second round 6.99/212.76 beat the Ramchargers again as they got back in with the break rule in effect (Low ET loser returns if breakage takes you out). In the final against Low ET car (6.83) Richard Tharp in the Blue Max, Mike had problems and an 8.12/112 is all he could do while Tharp won with a 6.91/216.94. - Ron Howard | Best NHRA time was 7.01/197.36.

Notes: Dave started the year by qualifying third with a 7.52 at Irwindale's New Year’s Day Race. He smoked his tires in the first round, to an 8.25/129.10 that lost to Gas Ronda's 7.43/196. On Jan 4, he raced at the first OCIR All-Pro race. He won his first-round with a 7.46/200.89 over Marv Eldridge who shut off, but the drivetrain broke in the Challenger in the semifinal and Charlie Allen's 7.45/175 advanced to the final. At the second All-Pro event on January 18, he advanced past the first-round when Ray Alley broke, but again he had troubles when his transmission let go in the semifinal advanced Gene Conway. On January 26 he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show, but a 7.67/179 by Charlie Allen in the first round, beat his 7.73/186.22. At the third OCIR All-Pro event on February 22, he won his first-round race with a 7.41/189.07 over Danny Ongais' 7.69/193 in the Mickey Thompson Mustang. Unfortunately, he hurt the motor and was unable to run in the semifinal. He competed at Famoso on March 8 for the March Meet. He beat Bob Pickett's 7.88/182 in the first round, with a 7.86/189.46, but a semifinal 7.67/190.66 lost to Hank Clark's 7.65/195. The following week saw Dave at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified, but a broken blower manifold kept him out of the show. On March 28, he won the final OCIR All-Pro race. They ran 16-cars at the final event. In the first round a 7.74/157.61 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.01/177. Dave ran an easy single in the second round when Jim Adolph lost reverse after his burnout and was unable to run. An easy 8.16/177.86 got him into the final when Don Hampton fouled. A final round 7.56/196.07 beat Tom McEwen. On April 4, Irwindale held an eight-car show. Beebe finished runner-up after running 7.76/190.26 over Hampton's Corvette, and a 7.62/188.66 over Leroy Hales. In the final, both he and Mike Snively ran 7.65, but Mike got there first. He took another win on April 18 at an eight-car show at OCIR. Dave qualified #5 with a 7.45/188.67. A first-round 7.50/191.89 beat Adolph, and in the semis a 7.46/185.56 advanced when Ongais suffered a broken fuel pump. A final round 7.45/195.22 took the win when Gene Conway broke a rear end. He won at OCIR again on May 2 over a 28 car field for the Big Four Championships. Dave beat Jack Chrisman in the first round, with a 7.61/177.51, and Mert Littlefield lost to Dave's 7.54/178.92 in the second round. He got an easy win in the third round when Alley fouled. In the semifinal, he ran a 7.42/195.65 over Snively's 7.59/196. In the final he met Manuel Herrera driving John Lombardo's normally gas powered Corvette that had switched to Nitro for this event. Manuel lost a transmission and Dave won with a 7.71/185.18. Dave qualified #14 at the NHRA Springnationals in June, but a first-round 7.53 lost to Bobby Rowe's 7.36. He also suffered a first-round loss on June 20 at the OCIR March of Dimes race. A 7.50/192.30 lost to Ray Alley's 7.41/193. Dave was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships. He beat Dean LaPole's "King Camaro" in the first round, with a 7.75/191.48, but he lost a close race against Snively in the second round. Mike's 7.46/180 beat his 7.48/195.22. Irwindale held a 16-car show on July 17 and an 8.05/171.10 qualified Beebe #6. He beat Chrisman in the first round, with an 8.02 and a 7.90 advanced past a fouling Bob McFarland in the second round. He singled in the semifinals when both John Lombardo and the break rule car of Larry Fullerton broke. In the final, Gene Conway beat him with Low ET of the meet, a 7.63 to Dave's 7.97. He returned to Irwindale on July 25 for a best two out of three match race against Dave Hough's "Nanook" AA/FA. It was a good match with some close racing. In the first race the fuel altered ran 7.59/196 that lost to Beebe's 7.55/190.66. In the second race, Hough evened the score with a 7.34/207 beating the Challenger's 7.55/193.12. In the final race, Hough wrapped up the match with a 7.35/206 beating Beebe's 7.97/190.66. Dave picked up a win on August 1 at the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships. He ran 7.48/201.54 (Top Speed) over Mert Littlefield, a 7.58/179.28 over Marv Eldridge, and a 7.56/176.12 over Dick Poll. In the final, he ran an easy 8.05/176.81 when Bob McFarland blew his motor on the line. At the OCIR Anniversary race on August 15, he beat Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 7.54/199.11, but he fouled away a 7.43/193.54 in the second round against Snively. Dave found himself in another final round on August 29 at OCIR for an eight-car show. Beebe advanced past a broken Bovan in the first round, with a 7.38/208.81. In the semifinals, Don Schumacher broke a rear end and once again Dave advanced. He faced Snively in the final and despite running a good 7.34/197.36 he lost to Mike's 7.33/201. On September 12, Irwindale held an eight-car show and Dave won his first-round race over Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" with a 7.53/192.70. In the semifinals, he slowed to a 7.88/197.80 that lost to Conway's 7.42/197. He set a 7.08 track record at OCIR in qualifying #1 for the Lions Anniversary Meet. He went on to win by running 7.19/193.13 over a broken Bob McFarland and 7.36/190.27 over John Collins in the "Atlas Oil Tool Car" in the semifinals. In the final he beat Frank Rupert driving Don Cook's Corvette with a 7.24/191.89. | The 7.53/189.07 were the best NHRA times.

Notes: After driving the successful "Super Ford" Torino in '68 and '69, Foster had this new 118" Logghe built Mustang for '70. The car used a stock displacement 427 SOHC with M/T rods and pistons. A pair of Joe Lunati cams were also used with the stock heads and valve train. Up top, a Cragar intake manifold supported the 20% overdriven GMC 6/71 blower. Enderle injectors were used. A Coleman and Taylor prepared C-6 transferred the estimated 1,500 hp back to the Detroit Locker with 3.70 gears. The Mustang weighed in at 2,180 lbs. Cammer-powered Mustang set a short-lived track record at Gainesville at 7.296 (193.13) on February 13 for the Gatornats. The record was beaten the same day by Larry Arnold. On April 12, Foster was at Delmar for a match race against Charlie Allen. Sid had handling problems in their first race, and his 11.54/168.66 lost to Allen, who blew a transmission at 10.22/125. The Mustang lost a transmission in the second race and slowed to 10.32/78.12 to lose to the Dodge's 8.01/188. Sid blew his engine in the final race, and Allen ran 7.94/182 to win three straight. He then went to Connecticut for another match race. This time he was up against Jimmy King, who was driving Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. Both had problems on their first run, but Foster's 8.43/178.57 beat the 'Vette's 9.61/160. King fouled in the second race, and Sid saw it, so he coasted through for the win. In the final race, the Mustang broke while Jimmy ran a great 7.64/189. Sid took on "Jungle Jim" Liberman in a best of three match at a 1,000-foot track late in May. In the first race, the Mustang lost second gear and the race. In their second race, JJ took the win. They decided to run the third race anyway, and Liberman fouled while Foster got the win with a 6.14. Near the end of May, he was at Huntsville, Alabama, for a match race against Shirl Greer. In the first race, Shirl's 7.45 held off Sid's 203.77 top-end charge. In the second race, Greer broke, and Foster's 7.50/204.66 got the win. Greer could not return for the final race, so Sid soloed with a 7.42/205.87 for the match race win. - RH | Sid was the first alternate at the NHRA Springnationals (times unavailable). Columbus and Gainesville were his only two NHRA national events this year. Sidney also ran 6.18 at 1,000 feet at Humboldt IA 9/70 | Photo from Minnesota Dragways, summer 1970. – RT

Notes: Stock stroke motor. | Best NHRA ET was 7.263/196.07. Also 194.38 at Seattle 8/22/70. | Ray was at Lions for an eight-car show on June 27. His 7.49/194.38 beat Andy Clary in the first round, but his 7.67 in the semifinal lost to Dave Beebe's 7.49. On July 3, he competed at the OCIR Nitro Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.53/191.08 beat John Lombardo's 7.86/185. Marv Eldridge fouled against him in round two, so Alley advanced with a 7.51/189.07. His next opponent, Mert Littlefield, shut down early and Ray's 7.66/177.86 went to the final. He faced Arnie Behling, who was behind the wheel of John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. The final wasn't very close as Behling set Low ET with a 7.25 at 200 to easily cover Alley's 7.95/191.89. The following day, he was at Irwindale for the Fourth of July Championships. This was only an eight-car show, but Alley qualified. An opening round 8.53/135.13 advanced when Don Hampton crossed the centerline, but the Duster broke in its semifinal match against eventual winner Behling. Ray got another runner-up finish at Lions on July 11 for the AHRA All-American race. In the first round, his quick-leaving 7.83/179.28 beat Steve Bovan's 7.76/188. He actually lost to Behling's 8.02/133 in the semifinals when he ran an off-pace 8.81/187.50, but Arnie's Cuda had blown a rear end, so Alley was reinstated for the final. There he ran against Roger Wolford, who was driving the "Mako Shark" Corvette. The two had a good race, but Roger's 7.61/176 got to the stripe first before Alley's 7.65/193.54. Yet another runner-up finish came at OCIR on July 25 for the PDA Championships. In the first round, Ed Lenarth lost fire, giving Alley a 7.71/185.56 solo. In the second round, Danny Ongais lost fire in the M/T Mustang. Ray ran 7.51/185.56 to advance. Once again, he needed a little "help" with the "break rule" as he lost his semifinal race to Gene Conway. Alley's 7.79/186.33 lost to Conway's 7.47/192.71. But in the other semifinal race, both Lombardo and Dave Condit were able to get their cars down the track due to breakage, so both were disqualified. Alley now had to rerun Conway in the final. This time Ray had troubles and shut off to 11.52/99.77 while Conway got the victory with a 7.65/181. He ventured to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals on July 31. He ran times of 7.85, 7.50, and 7.48/193.12 to reach the final. It was an all-Duster final as he faced Ed McCulloch. The two had a great race that saw Ed's 7.05/210 win over Ray's quicker 6.99/199.48. McCulloch also stopped him at the third NHRA Division Seven race held at Bakersfield on August 9. This time it came in the semifinals. A week later (August 15), he was at OCIR for its anniversary race. It was a sixteen-car field, and Alley's opening round 7.53/192.71 beat Condit's 7.70/196 in the "L. A. Hooker." But in round two, he fouled away a 7.49/192.71 against Eldridge.

Notes: Tommy Grove's "Going Thing" 1969 Ford Mach I Mustang was one of the best Ford-powered funny cars of all time. Grove was loyal to the 427 SOHC engine and Ford from mid 1965.rnrnThis was after his 3 year FX winning tenure with Dodge’s 426 Maxwedge & Race Hemi from 1962.rnrn Logghe Stamping Company built the 69 chassis, and Paul Shedlik built and painted the Mach I Mustang body. Larry Shinoda designed the paint scheme. Master tin man Al Bergler did the aluminum work. Grove debuted the car in late 1968 and raced it through 1970. Tommy ran 7.28 at 203.69 in 1969 to become one of the first 200 MPH funny cars. Grove achieved notoriety for cracking 200 mph while at the same time rumored to be experimenting with an exotic fuel (hydrazine?) Tommy raced the car until the end of 1970. The "Going Thing" was replaced when it became outdated. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke and James Ibusuki). | Ford-powered Funny Car's won more than their share of races in '69, with Danny Ongais driving Mickey Thompson's Mustang to many victories and Gas Ronda's Mustang also winning a few events. Dick Loehr also won a couple of events. But for '70, there was only one strong Ford-powered car, and that was Grove's. Thompson switched his cars to the unproven Boss 429 engine, Ronda had his career end with his fire at the AHRA Winternationals, and Loehr went Pro Stock racing. Grove, like Don Nicholson in Pro Stock and Pete Robinson in T/F, was Ford's strong holdout. He won many races and matches but also seemed to set track ET and speed records at will. His season started at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. Tommy qualified #1 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.48. He got sideways in round one, but still won with an 8.45/192.76 over Bob Pickett. In the second round, Danny Ongais ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196 over Grove's 7.71/194.38. On January 18 at OCIR for their second All-Pro race, he beat Randy Walls in the first round, and a 7.55 in the semifinal beat Johnny Wright, but in the final against Gene Conway, his trans let go, and he had to settle for runner-up. He did better at the AHRA Winternationals on January 25 with a big win. He ran a first-round 7.58 over Mart Higginbotham, who fouled. A second-round 7.5 beat Tom McEwen's new Duster at 7.89. In the semifinal, a 7.58 advanced over Larry Reyes in the Hawaiian, who fouled away a 7.46. In the final, his 7.54/196.65 beat Jake Johnston's 7.67/198.23 in the Blue Max. He broke again in the semifinals on February 15 at the Fremont Northern Nationals despite turning 7.37/195.22 and 7.39/195.22. On April 5, Aquasco held an eight-car show, and Tom won a close 7.90/184.80 to 7.91/182.92 first-round race over Al Graeber. He lost in the semis to Bobby Wood's 7.68/193 with a 7.91/183.66. He faced Don Prudhomme in a match race at Capitol on April 11, and he won his first race with a 7.50/193.12 over Prudhomme's quicker 7.35/202.24. Prudhomme came back to win the next two rounds and the match. Grove was supposed to be at Connecticut the next day for a best of three match against Hank Clark in the "Chapman" Camaro, but he failed to show. He did better at his match against Malcolm Durham on May 10 at US 13 in Delaware, where he beat Durham three straight with a 7.71/189.46 best. In May at the Super Stock Nationals, he lost early when Larry Reyes' 7.38 beat his 7.60. Late in May, he was at Southeastern Dragway for a four-car show. He beat the "Invader" Corvette in his first race with a 6.38 on the 1,000 feet. Track. In his second race, he improved to 6.08 to beat Curtis Wasson and win the match. He set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.25/201.34 in winning at Minneapolis on May 30 for an eight-car show. He beat Ron Rivero's 7.41/187.50 in the final with a 7.29/198.67. And on May 31, they ran again at Minneapolis, and again Grove won. He set Low ET with a 7.32 and beat Bryan Teal's (Nelson Carter) 7.47/196 in the final with a 7.44/193.96. At Tri-City on June 7, he lost to Larry Arnold in the first round, when he got out-of-shape and ran off the track. In June, Arnold got him again in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show where Grove set Top Speed of the meet at 205.01 but lost to Larry's 7.19/202 to his 7.48 182.55. Bruce Larson faced off with Tom on June 27 at Maple Grove. In the first race, Bruce's 7.75/173 won when Grove blew a head gasket. Larson beat the backup car of Ken Poffenberger in the second race, but by the third race, Grove had fixed his Cammer and beat Larson's 7.49/190 with a 7.39/190.26. He lost the match but had the satisfaction of having the Low ET. On July 11, for Capitol's King of King's meet, Tom's first-round 7.42/188.28 beat a fouling Don Schumacher (7.46/170). A second-round 7.16/201.78 beat Roy Gay's 7.44/197, but in the semifinal, Prudhomme's 7.16/206 beat his 7.33/198.22. At Blaney in July, Grove set both ends of the track record at 7.17/205. In July, Edgewater held an eight-car show, and a first-round 7.40/196.12 beat Sid Foster's 8.44 out-of-shape pass. He lost to Bryan Teal's 7.60/154 in the semis when he had to lift and shut off. Grove ran a 7.50 best over Leonard Hughes at the Rockford Manufacturer's meet. He showed up with a new unpainted car and only won one of his three races. He won again on July 26 at the Dallas Funny Car Championships. The track was 900 feet, and Grove held the track record at 5.95 going into this race. A first-round 5.97 beat Houston Platt's 6.28. A second-round 5.95 beat Dick Harrell, and in the semis, he ran another 5.95 over Charlie Allen. In the final, his third 5.95 beat Larry Arnold. In August, the two foes had a match race at Suffolk, where Arnold won the first race with a 7.51/161 when Grove fouled away a 7.42/195.64. He then took the next two wins with runs of 7.17/200.00 and a track record 7.13 at 202.60. On August 10, he was up against Lew Arrington for a match race at Epping. Tom's 7.25/196.92 beat Lew's 7.54/196.06 in the first race, and an even quicker 7.22/201.78 over Arrington's 7.58/186 made it two straight for the match race win. Another win came at Minnesota on September 6 over an eight-car field. A first-round 7.31/194.38 beat Charlie Allen's 7.37/197, and in the semifinal, a 7.29/197.80 beat a shutting-off Terry Hedrick. In the final, his 7.27/201.34 beat Roger Lindamood's 7.45/204.54. He was at Suffolk on September 13, where he ran 7.03/203.60 in the opening round over Arrington and a second-round 7.00/205.46 beat Paula Murphy. He was to face Gene Snow in the final, but the car failed to fire. Tom finished the year with another victory on October 3 at the Dixie Finals at Blaney, where he ran Low ET and Top Speed at 7.17/205 before beating Pat Foster in the Hawaiian in the final. — Ron Howard

Notes: Runner up to Don Prudhomme at the Toys for Tots race at Irwindale on December 12/1970. Ran 7.42/175 at OCIR on 4/18/70. He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day race, but there he lost in the first round, to Clyde Morgan's Javelin at 8.05 to Gene's off pace 8.25. At the first OCIR All-Pro race on Jan 4, he beat Morgan in the first round, and a 7.50/195.22 in the semis beat Arnie Behling's quicker (Low ET) 7.43/172.08 in Don Schumacher's old car. In the final, Charlie Allen lost a trans and an easy 7.76/187.89 gave him his first win of '70. Another win came at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18 when Dick Bourgeois fouled against him in the first round, and Dave Beebe lost a trans against him in the semifinal. In the final, Conway ran an 8.58 to win over Tommy Grove who lost a trans on the line. At an eight-car show at Lions on February 14, Gene broke against Jim Liberman in the first round. The following day (February 15) at Irwindale he had more bad luck when he crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He qualified third with a 7.68. At the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22, a first-round win foretold the final. Gene's 7.33/200.89 beat Jake Johnston's quicker 7.28/181.08 in the Blue Max. In the semis, a best-ever (to that point) of 7.27/201.79 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.50/194.38. In the final, he met Johnston again who had gotten back in with the break rule. Gene's quicker 7.35/201.34 lost to Jake's 7.37/189.47. OCIR held another eight-car race on March 14 and Gene advanced to the semifinal before fouling against Warren Gunter's VW. At the final OCIR All-Pro event on March 28, Gene lost a rear-end in the first round. Back at Irwindale on April 4 for an eight-car event, a first-round 7.86/172.08 advanced him into the semis where Mike Snively's 7.81/192.30 beat his 7.92/186.32. He then went to OCIR and won the Corvette Funny Car Championships. He beat Marv Eldridge in the final with a 7.54 (Low ET) at 182.55. Another runner-up finish and another broken rear end came on April 18 at OCIR. A first-round 7.35/197.36 beat Mike Van Sant's 7.41/198.23 in the Invader. A semifinal 7.42/175.43 beat Ray Alley's 7.44/191.08, but Dave Beebe won in the final where Conway broke. OCIR held its Big Four Championships on May 2. A 32-car field saw Gene run 7.95/141 and 7.86/179.28 over Jack Chrisman's close 7.88/185.56 and an 8.13/153 before breaking in the semis against Manual Herrera. On May 30 at the OCIR Funny Car 500, Conway fouled away a 7.42/198.23 against Snively in the first round. He lost again in the first round, on June 20 at OCIR's March of Dimes event. Arnie Behling's Low ET blast of 7.25/199.50 beat his 7.74/195.65. Snively must have had a hex on Gene because on July 3 for the OCIR Nitro Championships Conway again fouled against him in the first round. The next day at Irwindale for the fourth of July Championships, he went all the way to the finals before losing to Arnie Behling. On July 11 at the AHRA All-American at Lions, Gene got out of shape (8.33) in the first round, and lost to Roger Wolford (7.54/188.28). A win came at a sixteen-car field at Irwindale on July 17. He qualified #1 with a 7.67/190.26 (Top Speed) and beat Dave Beebe in the final with Low ET at 7.63. He then won the PDA Championships at OCIR on July 25, beating Ray Alley in the final with a 7.65/181.81. On August 1 at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships, he ran a 7.42/188.28 in the first round, and a 7.73/177.51 in the second before his car caught fire in the semis. Gene was OK. Conway fixed the car and installed a Crowerglide clutch set up with a Lenco two-speed transmission. With this set up, he showed up at OCIR on August 15 for their Anniversary Race. A first-round 7.27/188.28 beat Leroy Hales' 7.84/184. In the second round, a 7.33/194.80 beat Bob McFarland's 7.97/176 and in the semifinal, a 7.70/200 beat Ed Lenarth's 7.84/177. In the final, Gene ran his best ever speed and ET of 7.18/206.89 over Mike Snively's 7.30/203. On August 29 back at OCIR for an eight-car show, Gene ran a first-round 7.03/204.68 and a semifinal 7.10/202.70 lost to Snively's 7.12/205.47. A runner-up finish on September 12 at Irwindale followed. He ran 7.44/194.80 and 7.42/197.80 to reach the finals before losing to Snively's Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 7.26/204.54 to Gene's 7.45/177.51. On September 26 at Lions for the Anniversary Race, Ed Lenarth's 7.42/181.81 beat his 7.61/132.74 in the first round. At the OCIR East-West Championships on October 10, Gene's 7.19/198.67 beat Snively's 7.30/205.01 in the West portion of the race, but for the overall title he lost to Don Schumacher. Conway had run a best of 7.09/201.34 at the race. Gene (7.23/184.80) lost to Dave Beebe (7.09/198.23) in the first round, at the next event on October 24 at Lions, followed by a runner-up finish to John Collins in John Bateman's Maverick at the Pumpkin Day Open at Irwindale. He qualified fifth with a 7.30 and ran a first-round 7.28/208.32 over Larry Arnold. A semifinal 7.37/205.46 beat Charlie Therwhanger, but Collins' 7.23/200.88 beat his 7.44/188.24 in the final. At Irwindale for a 32 car show on November 14, Gene smoked the tires and lost to Arnold's 7.09/208.80 (Top Speed) in the second round. Gene qualified fifth on November 21 at Lions for an eight-car show. He ran 7.28/185.18 to beat a wheelstanding Randy Walls in the first round, before smoking the tires to a losing 15.50-58 in the semis against Bob Pickett who won with an 8.49/131. Gene failed to qualify for Irwindale's Toys for tots race. He had a streak of luck when number eight qualifier Larry Arnold broke and Conway got into the show. He almost went all the way, beating Ron O'Donnell in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the first round, with a 7.29/196.05 and then beating Jim Liberman in the ailing "Chi-Town Hustler" in the semifinals with a 7.37/200.44. In the final, he faced Don Prudhomme. Don had been running in the sixes on every run and in the final it was no different as the "Snake's" 6.92/192 beat Conway who crossed the centerline. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed at 6.925/218.97. Assuming that was run in 1971.

Notes: Ed failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (not sure what car he was driving), where the weak 7.74 "bump" was attributed to bad track conditions. On May 3, he was at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division Six race. He was the only FC driver to show up. On May 24, only three cars showed for the NHRA Division Six race at Bremerton. Ed reset both ends of the NHRA record in qualifying with a 7.19/211.76. After an easy "bye run," he beat Kenny Goodell in the final with a 7.52/210.28. At the third NHRA Division Six race held at Mission Raceway in BC, five cars showed, and McCulloch won again. An easy 7.31 advanced in the opening round, and he got a solo in the semifinal. He faced Frank Hall driving Jerry Ruth's Camaro in the final, and Ed set Low ET and Top Speed while winning at 7.12/212.76. Shortly after that (July 25), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field at 7.11/205.46. In round one, he defeated Johnny Wright with a 7.17/205. But he fouled away a 7.26/193.46 in round two against John Lombardo. He then went to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals. Ed made runs of 7.45,7.12 and 7.19/208.60 to reach the final against Ray Alley. Ray's times were more than two-tenths off McCulloch's times throughout eliminations. Somehow, Alley stepped up to 6.99/199 in the final, but he still lost to Ed's 7.05/210.95 (Top Speed). This car's last event took place in Seattle in August for the final NHRA Division Six race. Ed's 7.33/207.84 (Top Speed) beat Kenny Martin, who broke in the opening round. But in the semifinal, the Duster's transmission failed, and he lost to Goodell. So after leaving the race with the trailer in tow, the trailer caught fire due to faulty wiring. The tow car, as well as the trailer and race car, went up in flames. | Cover and 5-page feature in 10/70 issue of Drag Racing USA. - RT

Notes: Tom McEwen got one of the biggest sponsorship deals for the '70 season. He and Don Prudhomme went to Mattel Toys and linked their FCs with the "Hot Wheels" corporation. It brought the "Mongoose" and the "Snake's" names into households everywhere and drew many up-and-coming fans. McEwen debuted this Duster at Beeline on January 25 for the AHRA Winternationals. In the first round, both he and Gordon Mineo ran 8.40's with the "Goose" getting the win. In the second round, his 7.89 lost to eventual winner Tommy Grove. On February 14, he was at an eight-car show at Lions. He beat Bob Pickett's quicker 7.35 in the first round, with a 7.41, but he got out of shape in the semifinals and shut off against Don Prudhomme. The following week (February 22), he was at OCIR for the third All-Pro event. He broke a transmission and was unable to run. He was back at Lions on March 8 for the second AHRA Grand American race. He failed to reach the finals. The Duster was in its first final on March 28 at the last OCIR All-Pro race. In the first round, he beat Roger Wolford in Jack Chrisman's Mustang, with a 7.80/190.27. In round two, a 7.65/194.38 beat Warren Gunter's 8.87. He had a close one in the semifinals when his 7.48/196.07 beat Mike Snively's 7.51/191 in Jim Annin's Challenger. In the final, he lost to Dave Beebe. At Rockingham for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships, Tom fouled in the first round against Ron Umbach. He lost in the first round, at the next AHRA race as well, the Grand American at Frontier Raceway. He ran 7.92/189.07 in the first round, which lost to Mart Higginbotham's 7.70/187. McEwen was at Bristol on June 7 for the AHRA Springnationals. A first-round 8.01 beat Shirl Greer, but in round two, his 7.79/171.79 lost to Dick Harrell's 7.64/176. A week later (June 14), he was at Dallas for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #8. He had problems in the first round and shut off on the line giving future superstar Kenny Bernstein a solo in Ray Alley's Cougar. Tom participated in a Top Fuel vs. Funny Car race at LaPlace on June 21. Just before this race, Tom had installed a two-speed transmission in the Duster. The Funny Cars were given a half-second handicap. LaPlace was having trouble with its timing equipment, so the mph clocks were out for this race. Tom lost his first race when his 7.57 fell to Preston Davis' 7.07. In his second race, he had Low ET for the funnies with a 7.41 that beat Richard Tharp's 7.12. In his third race, he fouled away a 7.61 while Ronnie Martin got the win with a 7.03. McEwen was at Capitol for the King of Kings Funny Car Invitational on July 11. In the first round, he was running Clare Sanders in the "Super Camaro," but at half-track, the Duster broke. McEwen kept up a busy match race program during the season, mostly against Don Prudhomme for his "Hot Wheels" sponsor. On July 26, the two met at Union Grove, where Prudhomme won three straight with a best of 6.94/214 compared to Tom's best of 7.25/206.80. At the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet, McEwen beat Randy Walls in the first round, 7.56/197.36. He had a close race with Grove's SOHC-powered Mustang in round two. Tom won with a 7.51 over Tommy's 7.52. In round three, he soloed with a 7.47/202.24 when Sid Foster's "Super Ford" broke. His ETs didn't qualify for the final. Tom had some bad luck at Epping on August 2 for the AHRA Grand American held there. He won his first-round race over Al Hanna, but his motor blew, and he had a flash fire that put the car out of competition for the rest of the day. He raced Prudhomme in a best of three at Capitol on August 8 but lost two straight. New York National hosted the AHRA Nationals at the end of August, and Tom made it into the second round before losing to Prudhomme's 7.11/209 with a 7.40/180.36. At Indy for the US Nationals, McEwen made the show with a career-best (for FC) of 7.06 that qualified #8, but in the first round, he lost to Bruce Larson's 7.17 with a 7.212. On September 27, he was runner-up to Leroy Goldstein at US 30's Funny Car Spectacular. OCIR held its East vs. West Funny Car Championships on October 10. McEwen was on the East's team. In his first of three races, he lost to Jim Liberman's 7.22/202 with a 7.56/198.07. In his second race, his 7.44/196.07 lost to Jake Johnston's 6.94/208 in the "Blue Max." He won his last race on a solo when Ken Safford blew a motor on his burnout in the "Mr. Norm" car. Tom ran a 7.09/206.89 single. His times were not good enough to get into the final. Fremont held its own version of the East/West Meet on October 24. Once again, Tom's ETs failed to get him into the finals. As the year was coming to a close, Carlsbad held its Match Race of Champions event. Four cars competed and made three runs against one another. Tom lost to Prudhomme in his first race, and in his second race, he lost a blower and the race to Goldstein in the "Ramchargers" Challenger. He came back to win his third race with a 7.31/200.88 over Pat Minick's 7.43/192 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At the AHRA World Finals at Beeline on November 15, McEwen kept his bad luck streak alive in AHRA races. In the first round, his engine let go, and he slowed to a 7.69/184.08 loss to Ed McCulloch's 7.23/207. The Duster was getting a little long in the tooth by the time the NHRA Supernationals came around. Tom failed to qualify for the field that had a 7.27 bump spot. Formerly listed 6.80/220.00, but we don't believe this car ever ran a "six" or hit 210. Let us know otherwise. | Best NHRA times were 7.06/204.08.

Notes: Just before September, Wood replaced his 427 Chevy with a 426 Hemi. He ran at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals and, in the first round, ran a career-best (to this point) of 7.077/206.42 in beating Gene Snow. Ironically, he lost in round two to the only Chevy-powered car to qualify in FC, Bruce Larson. Bruce ran a career-best 7.161/205.94 to beat Wood's 7.220/199.55. On September 20, a match race was run at Southeastern's 900-foot track against Tommy Grove's Cammer-powered Ford Mustang. Wood won the first race with a 5.93, but Grove came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 5.78. He took a win on October 18 at the Atlanta $10,000 meet. He actually lost in the semifinals of the eight-car show when Tommy Smith beat him in his new Duster. Unfortunately for Tommy, his parachute failed and the car crashed off the end of the strip so Wood was reinstated to run against Huston Platt's Camaro for the money. A final round 7.34/204.08 won the event for Bobby.

Notes: Howell was at Rockingham on April 19 for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was the third AHRA Grand American race. He was the low qualifier for AHRA's "seeded" entries with a 7.35. His 7.52 defeated Malcolm Durham in round two, and in the semifinal, his 7.57 stopped Clyde Morgan. In the final, he faced Gene Snow, and Snow had run 7.16 while winning his semifinal race. Jay really needed to pick it up. However, it was not in the cards as Snow got the victory with a 7.14 with an early shut-off speed of 168 while Howell ran 7.45/193.54 for the runner-up honors. Jay drove this car at Frontier International for the fourth AHRA Grand American race. He beat Dick Harrell in the first round, with a 7.82/170 and in round two a 7.69/185.56 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.84/181. The "Snake" got back in on the "break rule." The two were to race again in the semifinal, but Howell blew his transmission on the burnout. Prudhomme advanced and went on to win the event. Jay was the Shop Foreman at Logghe Stamping Co. AKA Warhorse. Ran 7.15/199.87 in win at AHRA Detroit race.

Notes: Larry was the low qualifier at Gainesville for the first NHRA Gatornationals with a 7.17/203.65. He beat Sid Foster in the first round, but his 7.21 lost to Larry Reyes' 7.10 in the second "Candies and Hughes" car in the semifinals. Shortly after that, he was at Miami-Hollywood for an eight-car show. An opening round 7.49/192.71 beat Leonard Hughes' very close 7.49/199, but in the semifinals, he smoked the tires to a 7.80/184.04 that lost to eventual winner Clare Sanders' 7.74/191. On April 5, he won over an eight-car field at Kansas City. Arnold ran times on 7.40/187, 7.37/197, and finally, a track record 7.30/199 to win. | He also ran 7.19 at KCIR on another date. The best NHRA times were the 7.176/203.65 at Gainesville. Where was the 7.08 run? Larry also ran 6.11 at Dallas, GA (900 feet).

Notes: Surprisingly, this car was run for two seasons, and in its first season ('69), the car's performance was only fair. But in '70, it ran really well, setting 29 track records across eastern strips and becoming the NHRA Division 1 points champion. The car ran a best of 7.09/215.71. Wallace ran an eight-car NHRA Circuit race at Blaney on April 4. He lost to Phil Castronovo in the first round but got back in on the break rule. In the semis, he ran an 8.14/175.74 over Tom Sneden and then went on to win by defeating Mel Perry in the final with an 8.02/197.44. He met Charlie Allen for a match race at Maple Grove on May 30. In the first race, he beat Allen's 7.92/160 with a 7.70 at a track speed record of 202.70. In the second race, Wallace's 7.67/199.54 lost to Allen's 7.44/187.36, and in the final race, Allen took the match with a 7.54/173 that beat Pee Wee's off pace 8.53/191.48. On July 25, he was back at Maple Grove for its Coca-Cola FC Meet. A 7.88/185 in the opening round, lost to Bruce Larson's 7.70/184. | Pee Wee ran 7.37/206.89 at Atco NJ Championships in 1970 from a Quaker State Oil ad that touted Pee Wee's amazing 1970 season. Pee Wee also ran 7.45 at Suffolk. - Mike Gagnon

Notes: Larson debuted his '70 Camaro on March 15 at York US 30 at a match race against Ken Safford in the Mr. Norm Charger. In his first race, he ran 177.12 that lost to Ken's 7.50. An improved 8.05/187.11 in the second race was still unable to beat the seasoned Charger's 7.44/189. And in the last race, the Camaro broke. York US 30 held an 8-car show on April 5. The finalists were based on the two rounds of competition, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Larson's 7.71/187.50 beat Arnie Beswick's 8.24/173 in the first round, and in round two, he fouled away a 7.71/185.95 opposite Charlie Allen. He still made the final due to his ETs, and there he laid down a 7.56 (Low ET) at 189.07 to beat Malcolm Durham's 7.64/191.89. A week later (April 12), he was at Columbus for a four-car show. In his first race, his 7.76/190.26 beat Bobby Rowe in the "Super Duster.” The second race had him up against Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Minick's 7.45/197 beat Larson's 7.71/190.26. In his final race, he faced Johnny Wright in Mickey Thompson's Mustang. Bruce's 7.59/193.12 beat Wright's off-pace 8.00/165. On April 26, he ran a match race at Englishtown against Ron Rivero. Both cars ran 7.79 in the first race, with Ron's slower speed of 185, getting the win over Larson's slightly faster 186.33. Unfortunately, Larson could not run due to his engine quitting after the one race, and Rivero took the match. Bruce ran the Super Stock Nationals but lost early both days. He went up to Cayuga Dragway in Canada for an eight-car show in May and finished runner-up. He had beaten Clare Sanders' 7.81/188 in the Super Camaro with a 7.67/191.48 and a semifinal 7.71/191.48 advanced when Don Schumacher broke on the line. In the final, he ran a good 7.59/194.88 but lost to Phil Castronovo's Low ET and Top Speed run of 7.52/196.92. Phil got him again at Connecticut for a 16-car show on May 31. This time, the two met in the first round, with the same results. Castronovo's 7.56/175 beat Bruce's off pace 8.45/184.42. On June 7, Larson was on his way to the final after setting Low ET with a 7.14 at the New England Spring Funny Car meet. Unfortunately, after a strong burnout, his transmission let go, and this reinstated Rowe with the break rule in effect. Maple Grove hosted a match race between Larson and Tommy Grove on June 27. Larson's 7.75/173.41 won the first race when Grove blew a head gasket. He then won the second race and the match when he beat the backup Corvair of Ken Poffenberger with a 7.65/181.80. Grove got his car fixed in time for the third race and blasted a 7.39/190 to beat Larson's 7.49/190.26. On July 5, Connecticut held a 16-car show. In the first round, Paula Murphy's 8.10/189 lost to Larson's 7.54/192.71. He had to race her again in the second round when she got back in on the break rule. This time a 7.45/189.47 beat Paula's 7.79/192. In the semifinal, a 7.81/186.72 lost to Paul Stefansky's 7.69/195. National Trail hosted a match race between Larson and Rowe. A holeshot-aided 7.67/187.88 beat Rowe's quicker 7.55/202 in the first race. In the second race, Rowe came back with a 7.47/192 to beat Bruce's 7.54/195.22. In the deciding match, Larson's 7.54/195.22 beat Rowe's better 7.53/195. He competed at the NHRA Summernationals on July 19. A 7.67/191.89 qualified #5. He won his first-round with a 7.81/192.71 over Poffenberger's 8.28/186. In the second round, his 7.74/193.13 was far behind Gene Snow's 7.32/207. The Chevy-powered cars were feeling the pinch as it was getting harder and harder to run against the Mopars, especially once they started stroking the Hemis. Bruce was holding out exceptionally well, but even his "Rat" motors were being hard-pressed. Budds Creek held an Funny Car show, and Larson managed to make it into the final. He had beaten Pee Wee Wallace with a 7.96/190 and an 8.05 beat Al Graeber in the second round. He lost to Larry Reyes' 7.35/196 in the semifinal but got back in on the break rule to face Reyes again in the final. Reyes took the win. Another runner-up finish came on July 25 at the 1/8 mile Sunset drag strip's Funny Car Nationals. Larson ran 5.04, 5.08, and a semifinal 5.05 over Stefansky's 5.49. In the final, he ran his best ET, a 5.01, but lost to Kelly Chadwick's 4.97 Low ET of the meet. Larson was back in New England on August 9 for a match race against Lew Arrington. Both cars were off in their first race, with Lew's 8.21/191 beating Bruce's 8.85/166. Lew won the match when he beat Larson in the second race with a 7.57/188 over the Camaro's 8.1/183. Maple Grove held a 16-car show in August, and once again, Bruce was runner-up, this time to Leroy Goldstein in the Ramchargers Challenger. Larson really made the Chevy fans stand up and cheer at the NHRA Nationals. He was the only non-Mopar-powered qualifier with a 7.24 that held on for the "bump spot." He beat Tom McEwen's 7.21 in the first round, with a career-best 7.17/205. He improved his all-time best in the second round to a 7.161/205.94 while beating Bobby Wood's 7.22. All good things have to come to an end when in the semifinals, he fouled against Goldstein. Larson was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. It was an eight-car show, and he beat Pete Hill in the first round, with a 7.69. A better 7.46 in the semifinals lost to Jim Liberman's 7.31. On September 20, he was at Epping for the fourth annual New England Funny Car Championships. It was a 32 car show, and Larson beat Kosty Ivanof in the first round, with a 7.66/202. In the second round, a 7.36/199.50 beat Paul Stefansky's Mustang, but in round three, he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super Duster."

Notes: Kelly Chadwick is well known in two different fields. In Texas, Kelly is well known as a girls’ basketball coach. Chadwick is also known as a premier drag racer in Texas and beyond. Kelly worked his way through a series of race cars until he reached the funny car ranks. Don Hardy built all of Kelly Chadwick's cars, including the pictured Camaro. The beautiful '69 Camaro was Chadwick's third funny car and his first with a fliptop tube chassis. Kelly had raced the "Wild Thing I" Chevy II and the "Wild Thing II" Camaro, mostly in the southwest. The 1969 Camaro was the first car he took on a national tour. Chadwick joined the original Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars and was said to be the champion in 1969. The Camaro’s best times were 7.10 at 209 by the end of 1970. (Photos provided by Drag Racing Memories. Info provided by James Ibusuki) | Kelly Chadwick was always a Chevy guy. He ran really well even into '70 using the Chevy engine against the more powerful Mopar Hemis. The Hardy built 124" wheelbase Camaro used a stock sized 427 "Rat.” It used a Bowers built GMC 6/71 that was 22% overdriven. He used Hilborn injection and as much as he was a Chevy guy he did use a TorqueFlite transmission. What was unusual was the fact that he was still running a Chevy rear end with 3.70 gears. Most of this info was taken from the September. 70 S/S Magazine. The article claimed at the time of the writing a best of 7.26/207. His season started at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #9 with a 7.70. An opening round 7.76 beat low qualifier Dick Bourgeois who was driving Don Cook's Chevy-powered Corvette. Unfortunately, Kelly fouled against Larry Reyes in the "Hawaiian" in round two. Reyes would go on to win the race. The NHRA Gatornationals was only an eight-car show and Chadwick failed to qualify there. On March 15 he was at Dallas for the season opener. There were ten Funny Car's there and they all were to run three rounds. Kelly beat John Dekker in his first race with a 7.81 and in his second race, he again faced Dekker and he won again with a 7.75. His best time came in the third race where a 7.59/190.27 beat Bobby Steakley. He and Mike Burkhart were co-winners as both won all three of their races. In April he was at Amarillo for a best of three against the "Candies and Hughes" 'Cuda. Kelly lost the match when he lost the first two races, but he did win the third race with his 8.07 beating Leonard Hughes' 8.08. Chadwick won the Canadian Drag Race Championships held at Napierville in May. A final round 7.91/184 beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman for the money. He was one of the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of stars that raced from track to track. In early June he was at the Cavalcade race at Atco. He lost to Dale Pulde's 7.32/190 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang in the first round, with a 7.69/174.75. In his second race, he beat Liberman's 7.57/181 with a quick-leaving 7.91/183.29. His times were not good enough to get to the final. The following week (June 13), he was at Great Meadows for another Coke race. A first-round 7.58 lost to Pulde's track record 7.45. But he beat Pulde in the semifinals and got to race Fred Goeske in the final. It was a weird final round as Chadwick lost fire and then Fred blew his engine and coasted across the line for the victory. By mid-'70, you had to run a Hemi to qualify at NHRA national events. At the NHRA Springnationals, every Funny Car qualifier ran one. But at the smaller tracks, where traction was difficult to get, the Chevys still had a chance. Kansas City held an eight-car show in the middle of June and Chadwick was there. But a first-round 7.57/178.92 was no match against Don Schumacher's 7.34/193. Suffolk held a Cavalcade race at the end of June and Kelly proved there was still a place for the "Rat" motor in Funny Car competition. His times weren't great, but he still took home the trophy. He started with a 7.50/182.92 over the ailing Mickey Thompson Mustang and n round two his 7.56 beat Bobby Wood. This put him into the final against Goeske's 'Cuda. Fred broke his transmission and Chadwick got the win with a 7.68. To show it was no fluke, he won the next Cavalcade race at Salem (Quaker City). There he ran 7.80/186.92 over Wood and he set Low ET in round two with a 7.64 at 185 while beating Johnny Wright (M/T Mustang). He again faced Goeske for the gold and this time the 'Cuda lost fire giving Kelly a 7.69/187 run for the win. The wins didn't stop as on July 5 he won the Cavalcade race at Blaney. There he beat Cliff Zink (Stone, Woods and Cook) in the final with a track record 7.50 at 199. Englishtown was the next stop for the Coca-Cola circuit and Chadwick ran well there, too. Zink beat him in the first round, with a 7.42/193 to his 7.54/192.71, but Chadwick then made runs of 7.62 and 7.50/182.92. He made another final at the Cavalcade race held at Cecil County, but he fouled against Wood. He got another big win at the PDA Funny Car Nationals held at Sunset Drag Strip, an eighth-mile track. He opened eliminations with a 5.04 over Paul Aray's 6.05. A second round 5.09 took out Jerry Caminito's SOHC-powered Mustang at 6.15 and a semifinal 5.05 beat Gordon Mineo. He met with another Chevy-powered car in a rare all-Chevy final. Bruce Larson had mirrored his times in his USA-1 Camaro. He had run 5.04, 5.08, and 5.05 to reach the final. It was sure to be a close race, and it was as both stepped it up, but Chadwick's track record 4.97 got him the victory over Larson's close 5.01. His next stop was at the Cavalcade race at Aquasco. He didn't win there. There were no Hemi-powered cars in the final at Cecil County for the Cars Magazine Championships. It was a good old Ford vs. Chevy match with Chadwick facing Tommy Grove's SOHC Mustang in the final. Grove was both quicker and faster at 7.21/196, but Kelly's 7.32/191.08 got there first, bringing home another trophy. He then faced off against the Stone, Woods and Cook Hemi-powered Mustang for a best of three match at Humboldt Country's 1,000 foot track. Chadwick won three straight, resetting the track record in the first two races with first a 5.85 and then a 5.81. A final 5.99 won the match when the Mustang blew a rear end. Yet another win came at the Niagara Cavalcade race where he stopped Steakley in the final.

Notes: The last of Bovan's cars. Car ran occasionally from 70 to 72. Steve did drive for others from 1973 to 1976. Best of everything in the car resulted in decent times (low 7s and 200 plus). Bovan fell on bad times with a bad group of people in the late 70s, which resulted in his demise.

Notes: Larry Reyes drove Candies and Hughes car only once at the Gatornationals. Leonard Hughes debuted a new '70 Cuda at the Gatornationals and had asked Roland Leong and Larry Reyes to tune and drive the '69 car there as well. Reyes was able to out qualify the new car with a 7.21/208.8 to Hughes 7.28/202. Reyes then ran 7.15 followed by a Low ET 7.10/207.85 in the semifinal before meeting Leonard in the final. For the final Reyes let Hughes get a big lead before leaving the line, but still almost nipped Hughes's 7.29 with a 7.12.
