Notes: Bryan was at Minnesota Dragway on May 31 for an eight-car show. He lost to Tommy Grove's 7.32/196 in the first round, with a 7.60/181.45, but got back into the show on the "break rule." He made it into the final, facing Grove's Mustang again. Once again, the results were the same, but it was a little closer, with his 7.47/196.06 finishing runner-up to Grove's 7.44/193. The following week (June 7), he was at Tri-City for another eight-car show. He pulled a wheelstand in the first round and lost. He ran a strong 7.21/202.70 in his second race to beat Charlie Allen's 7.40/199. Teal didn't have a very good day at the Funny Car Championships at Martin, Michigan. All the cars there made three runs. In his first race, he crossed the centerline and lost to Pat Foster, driving the "Atlas Oil Tool" Maverick. He got out of shape in his second race and clicked it early to a 9.94 loss to Grove's 7.35/205. In his third race, he lost to Larry Arnold. In July, Teal was at Suffolk for the Tidewater Funny Car Meet. The car still had handling problems, as in the first round, he crossed the centerline against Phil Castronovo. In his second race, his 7.62/168.85 lost to Lew Arrington's "Brutus" at 7.53/190. He got it squared away enough to run a 7.54/175.78 in his third race to beat Malcolm Durham's 8.03/182. Bryan made it into the final at an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 7.58/180 in the first round, with a 7.46/182.18, and in the semifinals, Grove got out of shape and had to shut down while Teal ran 7.60/154.10 to advance into the final. There, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Teal smoked the tires while Minick set Low ET and Top Speed, winning at 7.32/201.46. He was back at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All eighteen cars ran the first round as qualifiers, with the lowest eight ETs getting to run in round two. Bryan's 7.32/206.89 qualified, but in round two, his 7.41/180.00 lost to eventual winner Minick's 7.26/199. Late in August, he was at Minnesota Dragways for a four-car show. A first-round 7.58/181.08 lost to Kenny Safford's 7.17/207 in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the second race, Teal soloed with a 7.54/168.22 when Tom Hoover lost his brakes. In his last race, he made his best pass, a 7.38/210.28, but he was slow off the line and lost to John Collins' 7.41/209 (Atlas Oil Tool Special). In early September, Tri-City held an eight-car show that had Teal's 7.47/161.57 lose to Roger Lindamood's 7.26/202 in the first round. He then went to Iowa for the Humboldt County Funny Car Championships. It was a 1,000-foot track. He lost to eventual winner Mike Burkhart in the first round, then returned on the "break rule" only to lose with a 6.29 to Paula Murphy's 6.21. He frequented US 131 at Martin, Michigan, quite a bit as he was back there for another eight-car show. He ran really well, beating Gary Bolger with a 7.42/199.11, and in the second round, his 7.33/199.55 beat Larry Reyes' 7.51/199 in the "Hawaiian." He went up against Leroy Goldstein, driving the "Ramchargers" Challenger in the final. Unfortunately, it wasn't close; Goldstein's 7.04/206 got the money over Teal's 7.51/170.77. Minnesota held a Labor Day Funny Car race, and Bryan was there, but an off-pace 8.63/144 in the opening round lost to Terry Hedrick's 8.34/131 in the "Super Shaker." At Suffolk for the Dixie Drag Classic, he ran a best of 7.38/208.80 but failed to reach the final. He went up against Fred Goeske on September 19 at Maple Grove for a best-of-three-match race. He won the first race with a 7.30/204.30 over Fred's 7.64/196, but in the second race, Goeske won, but he blew the engine, and the car turned into a fireball. Fred ended up with some burns around his neck, and he and the car were done for the day. Teal soloed with a 7.33/205.96 for the match win. The speed was a new track record. Notes: Roy won the NHRA Division 4 race at Southland Dragway on May 24. Opponent Jake Johnston fouled away a 7.57 in the final and Gay's 7.97 got the victory. Only ten funny cars showed up at Dallas for the NHRA World Finals on October 15. Roy qualified #8 with a 7.41. In the opening round, he fouled away a 7.43 against eventual winner Gene Snow's 7.14/185. |

Notes: Jim filled in for an ill Pat Minick at Irwindale on December 12 at the "Toys for Tots" race. He pleased the "Chi-Town Hustler" fans by doing the same long smoky burnouts that Pat was known for. Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 7.40. He beat Jim Dunn's out of shape 'Cuda in the first round, with a 7.24/201.78. Unfortunately, the transmission refused to shift in the semifinals, and his 8.77/93 lost to Gene Conway's Corvette. |

Notes: This is actually the '69 car that Danny had great success with. A '70 grill, new paint, but still a 427 SOHC power plant. Not as much success in 1970. See Barb's comments on the '69 car. Ongais started the '70 season at Irwindale for their New Year's Day race, where he qualified fifth with a 7.55 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 7.58/190.66 beat a crossed-up Marv Eldridge. He ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196.92 over Tom Grove's 7.71/194.38. Danny's motor blew in the semifinal, and the car caught fire on a 7.71/178.92 pass losing to Johnny Wright in another Mickey Thompson Mustang. Danny was OK other than some minor leg burns, and the car had minor damage. On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, he cooked his motor in the first round, while waiting for teammate Arnie Behling in M/T's Maverick to stage. He finally ran and won with a 7.61 over the ailing Maverick. A second-round 7.90 beat a sleepy Gene Snow at 7.66. Unfortunately, Ongais was unable to make the semis, and Snow was reinstated. He qualified second at NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53 but lost in round two. An eight-car show was run at Irwindale on February 15, and a 7.65 qualified Danny second. A first-round 7.68/189.06 beat Mike Miller's out-of-shape Dart. In the semis, a 7.52/195.94 beat Gordon Mineo, and in the final, Ken Safford cracked off a 7.35/197 over Ongais' 7.60/169.81. He suffered a rare first-round loss on February 22 at the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22 when Dave Beebe's 7.41/189 beat his 7.69/193.54. Ongais beat Prudhomme with a 7.25/201 to win the Lions AHRA meet. This was the meet where Don Garlits trans exploded, and he lost part of his foot. Because the lights were damaged, the funny car final used a flag starter. At Fremont, Ongais set a 208.32 track record. Another win came over an eight-car field on March 14 at OCIR for the blue Mustang's last win. A first-round 7.60/193.96 advanced when low qualifier Mike Van Sant lost oil pressure and shut off on the line. A semifinal 7.72/193.13 beat Steve Bovan, who lost an engine. In the final, a 7.61/187.50 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.09/176.12. OCIR held its final All-Pro race on March 28, and Ongais ran a first-round 8.37/113.63 easing up over a fouling Leroy Hales. Up against Tom McEwen in round two, he lost fire, and Gunter's VW was called in on the break rule to replace him. On April 18 at OCIR for another eight-car show, Danny qualified with a 7.39/182.18. He beat Bob Pickett (8.37/182) in the first round, with a 7.61/184.80. In the semifinal, a broken fuel pump drive ended his chances. Arnie Behling crashed and totaled the car at Lions soon after. Best NHRA National event speed 199.11, but in this car? |

Notes: Also 7.61 at Mission. Kenny Goodell qualified his Challenger #15 at Ontario for the NHRA Supernationals with a 7.261/198.23. He nearly matched that time in the first round, with a 7.291/200.00 win when Don Schumacher broke a rear end. In round two, he slowed to 7.449/196.50 a loss to Larry Arnold's 7.381/196.50. |

Notes: Reyes started the '70 season at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. He qualified second with a 7.50 and ran a first-round 7.58/196.06 over Marc Susman. In the second round, he lost to Don Hampton's 7.48/201 with a 7.57/198.66. He raced at the second OCIR All-Pro race on January 18 but fouled away a 7.27/202.70 in the first round. At the AHRA Winternationals, he beat Don Prudhomme's 7.68 in the first round, with a 7.57. A second-round 7.64 beat Leroy Goldstein, who fouled, but in the semifinal, it was Reyes, who fouled away a strong 7.46 against Tommy Grove's Mustang at 7.58. A 7.73 was the best Larry could do in qualifying at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, placing the team #14. He improved to a 7.54 in the first round to beat Rich Siroonian's 7.93. An easy 7.72 advanced past a fouling Kelly Chadwick in the second round, and Leonard Hughes made it easy in the semis by fouling against him. In the final, a 7.55/196.39 beat Gene Snow's 7.83/184 for the win. It was a sweet victory since the year before the car was destroyed after winning his first-round race and flipping onto its roof. At the Gatornationals, Reyes drove Candies and Hughes old, proven'69 Cuda while Leonard Hughes sorted out the team's new '70 car. Reyes qualified third with a 7.21/208.80 (Top Speed), set Low ET at 7.10, and threw the final when the two team cars met. Hughes motored to a 7.29/202 while Larry waited and ran a 7.12/191.08 for the runner-up spot. Just before Indy, Roland Leong and Reyes parted ways amicably as Larry was getting burnt out from the extensive traveling. Pat Foster drove the "Hawaiian" at the NHRA Nationals. | Reyes ran 7.58/195 at Budds Creek late in 1970 (defeating Lew Arrington on a holeshot). We need to confirm it was in Roland's car. - Mike Gagnon |

Notes: Drove the former Ongais car after wrecking Maverick. This car came to an end at Lions on June 21. A new engine was being tested and regular driver Danny Ongais had broken three fingers in the Baja 500 race. Behling stepped in to test the car. On the first pass the Mustang ran well, but on the second attempt, the front end came up. Arnie backed out of it and looked like he had it saved. Unfortunately, the car took a sharp turn and crashed hard into the guardrail. It bounced off and continued to roll about 100 feet downtrack before coming to a stop upside down on fire. Arnie was able to walk away from the crash, but the car was history. There were lots of other rumors about the Mustang's demise, but this was reported in a Drag News Magazine from '70. Ironically, this car was credited with a 6.96 way back in September of '69. The day before this crash, on June 20 at New York International, Leroy Goldstein ran the first "accepted" six second times. |

Notes: Ran Coca-Cola Circuit. The car served as one of three cars being campaigned at the time, including a Vette and Javelin. The car was actually Fred Goeske's '69 Road Runner with a Challenger body mounted for Coke Circuit events. Eldridge was killed that Winter in Hawaii while piloting a blown Anglia. 120" Ron Scrima (Exhibition Engineering) chassis, B&M Torqueflite. Super Stock September 1970, claimed this car ran a stock-size 426 Hemi and ran a best of 7.28/202.70. |

Notes: On January 26, Charlie was at Irwindale in his Challenger for an eight-car show. He made it into the final by beating Dave Beebe's 7.73/186 in the first round, with a 7.67/179.78. In the semifinals, a 7.67/170.13 took out Dick Bourgeois' 7.95/193 in Don Cook's Corvette. In the final, he met Kenny Safford who was driving the "Mr. Norm" car for the first time. Safford got the win with a 7.49/196 over Allen's 7.54/191.88. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At the third OCIR All-Pro race on February 22, he fouled in the first round, against low qualifier Don Prudhomme. He didn't do very well at the Bakersfield March Meet where he lost to Fred Goeske in the first round, of the eight-car show. York US 30 held an eight-car show on April 5 where all cars would make two runs and the two Low ET cars would meet in the final. While Allen didn't run quick enough to make the final, he did win his two races. Kosty Ivanof's Camaro lost fire against him in the first race and his 8.35/163.04 won. In the second race, Bruce Larson fouled away a 7.71 against him and Charlie won with an 8.31/171.10. On April 12, he was at US 13 Delmar, Delaware, where he beat Sid Foster's new Mustang three straight. It was not without some issues as in the first race, Charlie lost a transmission, but still managed to win with a 10.22/125 as Sid got completely sideways and shut off to an 11.54/168.53. Allen won the second race with an 8.01/188.66 when the Mustang lost a trans and a third run of 7.94/182.92 sewed up the match when Foster blew an engine. He beat Clare Sanders at Connecticut in a best of three match where he set a 7.34 track record. He beat Pee Wee Wallace's "Virginian" 'Cuda at Maple Grove in a best of three match on May 30. He lost the first race with a 7.92/160.14 to Wallace's 7.70/202, but he came back to win the second and third races with times of 7.44/187.36 and 7.54/173.74. Allen was running well at Saginaw, Michigan, on June 7 for the Tri-City Manufacturer's Meet. It was an eight-car show and he won his first-round race with a 7.41/199.10 over Mike Burkhart while a semifinal 7.40/199.10 lost to Bryan Teal's 7.21/202. |

Notes: Car was campaigned throughout the 1970 season. Team burned the body off at Rockford, IL, and replaced the body with a Camaro to finish the season. Solano & Van Sant Invader Cuda was a different car. | This car came to an end, as mentioned, at the Rockford Manufacturer's Meet. All cars at the meet were to make three runs with the two quickest cars meeting in the final. Gary had been running strong as in the first race he fouled against Don Schumacher's 7.73, but the Corvette still ran 7.53. In the second race, he lost to Sidney Foster's holeshot aided 7.57 with a 7.49. The third race was the unfortunate one. Gary ran a 7.28 to beat a fouling Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler", but in the lights something blew as the car turned into an instant inferno. Scow got the car stopped and every fire extinguisher in the area was used up battling the blaze. The "Invader's" Corvette body was destroyed, but the chassis was salvageable. Gary was OK and his run ended the race as no more runs could be made as there was no fire equipment left at the track! |

Notes: Al Fontanini and crew member Jim Christensen were killed on June 25, 1970, in an accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. While stopped at a tollbooth, their rig was rear-ended by another truck. RIP. - RT | Early '70 photo from New England Dragway, I would ride in the tow car and check tire pressures before a run. Al and Jim were on their way to New England Dragway when the accident occurred. For years that weekend was declared the "Fontanini Memorial." I took this photo (when I was 16ish) . the noise would shake your guts . - Thomas Veilleux |

Notes: Ran 7.55 at Detroit - Mike Gagnon | Randy ran at the second OCIR All-Pro event on January 18, but he lost to Tommy Grove in the first round. He was at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD, for a best of three match race against Roger Lindamood in June. Unfortunately, he lost all three races to the "Color Me Gone" Challenger. In July, he was at an eight-car show at Edgewater. He beat Larry Arnold in the first round, with a 7.49/189.06, but lost to Pat Minick in the semifinals. Randy was a die-hard Chevy supporter, but as the season progressed, he found it harder and harder to keep his "Rat" motor competitive on Nitro. Where a good run for Walls was in the 7.20s, the top Hemi campaigners were now dipping into the sixes. He had a bad showing at the second annual Rockford Manufacturers meet. He got out of shape and lost to Tom McEwen in his first race and his car came up ailing against Leonard Hughes in his second race. Walls was at Lions on October 24 where 25 Funny Cars attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Randy made the show and in the first round, he beat Arnie Beswick with a 7.30/204.54. In the semifinals, he lost a motor on a 7.61/200.44 pass that lost to the meet's eventual winner Dave Beebe. | Formerly listed 6.905/216, but that was run in March of '71. |

Notes: Vic Brown was runner-up to Gene Snow at York 1970 NHRA Summernationals in this car (7.47 to Snow's winning 7.27). He won an Englishtown Funny Car show at a Low ET/Top Speed 7.43/198.23 over Tom Sneden in the Bob Banning Dodge. Early in September, he was at Englishtown for its Fallnationals. There was an eight-car field of FCs, and in round one, Vic's off-pace 8.51/190.67 lost to Arne Swensen's 7.86/180. He did not run in the semi-final, yet somehow got lined up against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final. JJ's 7.30/201 got the win over his 7.61/184.04. Soon after that (September 20), Vic was at Epping for the New England FC Nationals. It was a 32-car show, and in the first round, he lost to JJ. He got back in the show when Tom Sneden broke after winning his first-round race. He didn't get to stick around long as he again lined up against Liberman and lost again. This time JJ's 7.03/207 put his 7.43/203 on the trailer for good. Brown qualified with a 7.59 at Dallas International for the NHRA World Finals. In the opening round, he made an easy run when Jake Johnston broke a transmission in the "Blue Max." In the second round, he lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.86. | AKA Black Shadow. Why is Ray Beadle's number shown? Pretty sure this was Vic. Is 426 an AHRA number? Vic's NHRA number is 403. | Best NHRA national event time was 7.395/197.36. Formerly listed as 214.00, but that is likely incorrect. Let us know otherwise. |

Notes: Greer was the first driver to reset the NHRA flopper record in the decade of the 70s with a 7.30 in his "Tension" mini-Charger which erased Danny Ongais' 7.37 mark in Mickey Thompson's Mustang from 69. - Danny White | The 70 Tension Charger was a Ramchargers car that had been crashed. Dad front-halfed & re-vamped the chassis & mounted the body himself. Later, he & Don Gatliff cut & sectioned the body to make it a Mini-Charger. - Brian Greer | Shirl started the '70 season by winning the Drag News Championships in Orlando on Jan 4. He qualified #1 with an 8.23 and in the first round, he got the "odd-lot" single. In the second round, Bobby Wood broke on the line so Greer's 8.67/130.62 advanced. He got another solo in the semifinals. In the final he set Low ET and Top Speed of the meet with an 8.11/198.48 to beat Larry Arnold. On May 31, Shirl won the NHRA Division 2 race at Gainesville. He soloed in the first round, with an 11.63/129.31. In the semifinals, he advanced with an 8.81/156.25 when Huston Platt's Camaro broke. In the finals, he beat Julius Hughes' 7.96/193 with a 7.58/193.54. In May he was at Warner Robins for a best of three match against Jim Kirby's Camaro. Greer won the match two straight running 7.41 in the first race and a track record 7.37 in the second. |

Notes: The car debuted in classic Invader livery with Van Sant driving. Van Sant ventures off with Mickey Thompson to run one of his cars on Coke Circuit. The car later resurfaced in 71 as Contemporary Fiberglass Spl. - Mike Gagnon | Mike was at OCIR on March 14 for an eight-car show. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.30, but in the opening round, he lost oil pressure and shut down on the line against eventual winner Danny Ongais. He also set Low ET in qualifying on March 28 at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. Unfortunately, it came at a price as he could not run in the first round due to engine problems. |

Notes: Fred was a regular on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade Funny Car Circuit. On June 28, a Cavalcade race was run at Suffolk, Virginia. Goeske made in into the final by running 7.61 over a fouling Jess Tyree and in the next round, Cliff Zink, who was driving the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang, fouled against him. Fred was lucky in that race as his transmission had gone away. He faced Kelly Chadwick in the final. Fred pulled to the line with the ailing transmission still in the car, hoping that Chadwick would foul. He didn't and Fred had to settle for the runner-up spot. |

Notes: Ran 7.46 at OCIR. | Bob was at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships on August 1. He got to the final round, but had a bit of luck along the way. It was a sixteen-car show and in the first round, he ran 7.86/181.80 to get around a tire smoking Jr. Brogdon. In round two, his 8.01/185.56 lost to Dick Poll's 7.91/190, but Poll broke and McFarland got back in on the "break rule." In the semifinals, he faced Gene Conway, but Gene's Corvette caught fire so Bob advanced to the final with an easy 8.55/168.22. There his luck changed as he blew an engine and Dave Beebe soloed for the win with an 8.05/176. On August 15, he was at OCIR for its Anniversary Race. Once again it was a sixteen-car field. In the first round, a 7.90/169.81 got past Jack Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 8.16/151. In round two, his 7.87/176.47 lost to Conway's 7.33/194. Bob was back at OCIR on August 29 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but got in as an alternate. It didn't do him much good, however, as a first-round 8.06/192.71 lost to Conway's 7.03/204. At Irwindale's Labor Day Championships, his 7.71/184.04 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Mike Snively who ran 7.33/201 to win. Lions held its Anniversary Race near the end of September. McFarland qualified for the eight-car show, but he lost fire on the line in the first round, against eventual winner Beebe in the "Dodge Fever" car. |
