Notes: Car ran as an NHRA legal AA/FA. The car was the gorgeous Psycho '67 Mustang of Snodgrass and Mahnken. The car started out as an injected gas Fiat with the Ford Single Overhead Cam engine made just for racing. The Pat Mahnken driven machine did manage to win one four-car fuel altered event at Lions with a good 9.43/160.14 run. According to Don Montgomery's book, this win was due to the inconsistent nature of the other fuel altereds. Then in 1967, the team decided to capitalize on the growing funny car craze and got a new Mustang body to put on the car in place of the Fiat. The Tom Sherlock Ford sponsored beauty also got a new engine - a wedge head 427 Ford on fuel. Larry Barker now drove the all yellow car to nine-second runs until 1969. The car managed to win the 1967 Hot Rod Magazine Competition eliminator category in the AA/FA class, the car's career highlight. Pat Mahnken wascome one of the first professional bracket racers with an another Mustang funny car. According to nearby neighbor Bill Duke, he raced for a living after losing his regular job.

Notes: "Big John" Mazmanian is known for having great looking cars that also ran great. Mazmanian ran a series of gassers and funny cars, all in his trademark Candy Apple Red. Big John's first funny car was a stunner. The '68 Barracuda featured deep shades of Candy Apple Red with real gold leaf lettering. Rich Siroonian, Big John's nephew, drove the beauty. The team took its biggest win at the 1968 Manufacturer's Funny Car Championships at Orange County, defeating Don Schumacher in the final. Siroonian's best times in the car were 7.30 at 192. - BS | Multi-page build-up car feature in 1/69 Car Craft reported chassis by Ron Scrima's exhibition Engineering, motor to be 392" early hemi, and trans as B&M TorqueFlite. Photos confirm it was an early hemi, though there were suggestions they might switch to a later 426. - RT | Confirmed 7.48 at OCIR. | This car was debuted late in the year making one of its first appearances at Irwindale in early September for a best of three match race against Charlie Allen. Unfortunately, new car blues held Siroonian back. In the first round all he was able to run was 9.07/160.71 and it wasn't enough to beat Allen's Dart at 8.02/157. In the second race, the 'Cuda blew a rear end and slowed to 9.23/106.76 in a loss to Allen's 7.87/183. On September 21, Siroonian was at OCIR for an Funny Car vs Fuel Altereds race. Rich's 8.10/186.32 in the first round, lost to Glenn Way's 7.87/196 in the "Groundshakers" car. He beat a tire smoking Willie Borsch in his second round race with an 8.11/187.10. In the third race his transmission let go, and he lost to Sush Matsubara. The following week (September 28) he was at Irwindale for an Funny Car vs Top Gas Dragster event. Rich's 7.96/185.56 beat Kenny Ellis' 8.00/189 in the first round, but in round two he smoked the tires to an 8.29/183.28 loss to Jack Jones' 7.72/194. In his third race, he ran Low ET of the meet for Funny Car's, but his 7.90/184.80 wasn't enough to beat Bob Muravez's 7.85/193 in the "Freight Train." Siroonian drove the car to its best time and speed (up to this point) at OCIR on October 5. He lost to Art Ward in round one, when he shut off, but he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.75/192.30 to beat Ronnie Runyan in round two.

Notes: In the sixties, Bill Lawton was Rhode Island's most successful funny car driver. Teamed with Tasca Ford and tuner John Healey, Lawton won many races in the Super Stock, Factory experimental, and Funny Car classes. Lawton's biggest win came at the 1965 NHRA Winternationals, where he won Factory experimental. The win came in the "Mystery 8," so dubbed for the goal of running an eight-second time. Bill continued to race with Tasca until the "Mystery 7." Tasca left drag racing at the same time the Ford Motor Company did. Lawton continued to race funny cars on his own. Tasca returned to drag racing in the new century with an associate sponsorship for John Force. Tasca also raced a TA/FC with his son, dubbed the "Mystery 5." The photo shows the '67 Logghe-built Mustang, still running an injected SOHC 427, but the car would soon have a blower like the majority of the fuel funny cars. | Lawton was at Englishtown for a best of three match race against Roy Gay and his "Infinity" Firebird. In the first race, Bill won with an 8.09/180.72. Unfortunately, Roy lost an engine on his losing 8.19/172 pass, so Lawton ran a solo that set both ends of the track record at 7.85/185.56. He was going to make a third run attempting to better his record, but he lost a motor 500 feet off the line. Bill ran 191.48 at Crofton, MD, on June 1. On July 14, in Connecticut, Lawton ran 189.06 in a match race against Dick Bourgeois. The speed was a track record. Back at Connecticut on August 4, he raced Frank Federici in a best, two out of three match race. In the first race, his 7.68/171.75 beat Frank's 8.58/167. Frank's Corvette broke in the second race, and Lawton singled for the match race victory. He raced Roger Lindamood on August 11 for a best of three match at Norwood, Mass. It was a 1/8 mile track, and Lawton won the first race with a 5.31/145 over Roger's 5.37/152. Both ran 5.01 in the second race, but the "Color Me Gone" Charger got the win light. In the third race, Lindamood got the match race victory with a 5.14/153, beating Bill's 5.32/142. Bill was at Capitol Raceway on September 21 for a match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. In their first race, JJ's 7.64/190 came out on top over Lawton's 7.71/185.94. In the second race, Lawton fouled while the Nova blew its transmission and coasted to a 9.38 win. With Liberman winning two straight and now having the blown trans, no other runs were made. On November 24, the "Mystery "7" was at Connecticut for a match race against Malcolm Durham. The "Strip Blazer" had nothing but problems, and the Camaro lost three straight to the Mustang. Bill had run 7.80/187.50,8.30/189.46 and a 7.78/192.70 to sew up the match. His final speed was also a new track record. Photo courtesy Drag Racing Memories.

Notes: LaPlace held a four-car match race early in June. The "Candies and Hughes" car was one of the cars running. In the first round, Hughes lost to Kelly Chadwick when he fouled away an 8.06 at a track record 185.94. In his second race, Hughes reset both ends of the track record with a run of 7.82/188.66 over Della Woods' new Charger. In the third race, Hughes ran 8.16/184.42 to beat Tom Smallwood's 8.24/179 in the "Kingfish."In November, Hughes was back at LaPlace for a best of three match race against Larry Arnold, driving the "Super 'Cuda." Leonard's 8.31/175.09 lost to the similar 8.3/178 of Arnold in their first race. But Hughes continued to get quicker in the next two races while Arnold got slower. In the second race, Leonard's 8.23/181.44 tied up the match over Larry's 8.43/164, and Hughes sewed it up in the third race with an 8.10/185.56 that beat the "Super 'Cuda's" 8.49/168. Is this the same as the "Jake's Speed Equipment" Barracuda?

Notes: After wrecking his primary car at Virginia Beach, Grove ran his '67 Mustang until he totaled it as well. So he used Ed Schartman's back-up Comet and stuffed one of his potent Cammers in it. On September 1 at Minnesota Dragways for an eight-car event, Tom drove this car to a first-round, Low ET of the meet, 7.62/191.88 over Dick Loehr (8.02/175.43). In the semis, he ran a 7.72/191.48 over a fouling Roger Lindamood (7.80/191.88). In the final, a 7.71/191.08 beat Pat Minick's 8.12/181.44 in the Chi-Town Hustler 'Cuda. - Ron Howard

Notes: This Corvair would have been Ralph Nader's worst nightmare if he had seen it. Michigander Pete Seaton was one of the first match bash funny car racers. The "Seaton's Super Shaker" '67 Corvair was, in fact, his fourth funny car. The new Chevy was built by the Logghe Bros. At their Logghe Stamping Company. A 427 Chevrolet Semi-Hemi powered the car and was backed by a Torqueflite transmission. Terry Hedrick was chosen to drive the wild Corvair. Hedrick's seat of the pants driving style was awe-inspiring to the funny car fans of the sixties. The Corvair garnered many wins while touring the country in 1967 and 1968. Terry won one day and was runner-up the next at the 1967 AHRA Drag World Super Stock Championships at Wichita, Kansas. Was this Corvair unsafe at any speed? Nah. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday, Bill Duke, and James Ibusuki). - BS | He started the season at Irwindale for the New Year's Day Meet where he qualified #1 with an 8.01. A first-round 8.03 advanced him past a fouling Marv Eldridge. He made it past the next two rounds to meet Don Nicholson in the final. An 8.04 by Nicholson put Terry in the runner-up spot. On January 14 for OCIR's eight-car show, Hedrick qualified third with an 8.24/170.77. A first-round 8.28/182.18 beat Dick Loehr's 8.43/168. But in the semi's he was shut off on the line with a fuel leak. On February 25 he raced a best two-out-of-three at OCIR against Nicholson. Don's 8.03/166 and 7.97/172 beat Terry's 8.39/176.12 and 8.36/178.21. He did win the last race with an 8.29/178.57 over Nicholson's shut-off 13.21, but Don won the match. The two met again on April 6 for another best of three match at New York. This time Terry evened the score by winning the match. He won the first race with an 8.00/184.04 over Don's off the track 11.58. Nicholson came back to win the second race with a 7.79/166 over Hedrick's 8.04/182.18. But in the final race, the Corvair set both ends of the track record with a 7.75/185.18 to beat Don and win the match. The next day (April 7), he was at Detroit's Anchorville Motor City Dragway to race Sid Foster's Mustang in a best of three match. Once again Terry set a track record, this time it was an 8.09 at 178. He beat Foster three straight. Nicholson wanted another shot at Hedrick and he got it on May 5 for a best of three at Detroit. Don was now running his new Cougar. Hedrick won the first race with an 8.08/177.51 over "Dyno's" 8.36/164. Nicholson came back to win the second race with an 8.15/171 over the Corvair's 8.16/175.43. But Terry came through to win the match with an 8.09/177.86 to beat Don's shut off run. On May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships he failed to win, but he did set Low ET at 7.80. At Pittsburgh in May, Terry set both ends of the track record with a 7.84/180.36 while winning the Pittsburgh Funny Car Championships over Jim Liberman. A final round 7.92 beat Jim's quicker 7.88. On June 28, Terry was back at Detroit Dragway for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show. Hedrick beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" in the first round, with an 8.29/173.07. In round two, a 7.83/179.64 beat Leonard Hughes' 7.94/182. But in the semifinals, against Roger Lindamood, he got out of shape and went into a ditch along side the top end of the track. It damaged the front end pretty good, but Terry was not hurt. Don Gay met up with Terry on August 4 at LaPlace for a best of three match. Terry took the match two straight with runs of 8.02/182.92 and 7.99/178.82. Hedrick got his biggest win of the year on August 18 at New York National for the AHRA Nationals. He ran times of 7.60 (Low ET), 7.63, 7.67 and a final round 7.68 over Dick Harrell for the title. At Minneapolis on September 1, a first-round 7.89/180.36 was wasted when he fouled against Pat Minick (9.00) in the first round. Another match race against Nicholson was run at New York with the "Seaton Shaker" winning the match with a best of 7.75. He lost in the first round, again at Suffolk for an eight-car show when he got crossed up against Mel Perry. On September 29, he was at Windsor Dragway for a best of three against Lindamood. Terry won all three races with runs of 7.79/181.80, 7.77/184.04 and a final 7.93/179.64. On October 6, he won the AHRA World Finals at Kansas City International. Lakeland International held their Fuel Funny Car Championships on October 20 and Hedrick was there. He won his first-round race with an 8.39/179.64 over Terry Ivey's new Torino, but in the second round, he lost a torque converter and the race to Henry Garcia. - Ron Howard

Also, Don was runner up to Paul Stage's AA/C in Super Eliminator (pre-Funny Car Eliminator) at '68 Indy Nationals. - Danny White | Nicholson's early-season '68 car was destroyed in late July in a collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle, according to the 7/26/68 edition of Drag Times. Crewmembers Jim Campbell and Wally English were returning Nicholson's car to Detroit following the Super Stock Nationals. The impact threw the Cougar over the cab and onto the roadway, demolishing it. English was killed in the collision; Campbell was injured but recovered. - RT | The Cougar debuted at a match race in May against Jim Liberman at Capitol. Don lost two transmissions and the match when Jim strapped a 7.66/187.88 on him in the first race and rain kept the next two rounds from being run."Dyno also didn't have too much luck when he showed up for the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18. During a time trial run, he broke a timing chain, and he was unable to run in eliminations."Dyno" showed the world that he was still one of the top dogs in Funny Car racing when he showed up at Milan, Michigan on July 7 for a match race against "Fast Eddie" Schartman. Nicholson won all three races. His times were 7.66/184.04 and 7.70/182.18 in the first two races. But he really showed 'em in the last race with his 7.48/185.86. The following week (July 13), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Supercharged Invitational race. In the first round, Malcolm Durham fouled against him at Don advanced with an 8.11/165.74. He lost to Lyle Fisher's 8.19/180 in round two with an ailing 8.36/116.88. But due to the "break rule," he got back into the show for the semifinal. Once again, he faced Fisher. Lyle failed to fire this time, so "Dyno" soloed at 11.66. He met Larry Reyes in the final, and the 'Cuda had him covered, running 7.54/192 for the win over Don's 8.05/181.80 runner-up effort. - Ron Howard

Notes: In the new millennium, Don Schumacher has become the owner of the largest professional team in drag racing with eight cars. But at one time, he was a driver himself with the "Stardust" series of fuel funny cars that he raced from 1966 to 1974. The car is the "Stardust" '68 Barracuda. The car featured a late Chrysler engine inside a Logghe Bros. frame. Schumacher bought the car from Butch Leal, who gave up funny cars to go doorslammer racing. This was a departure for Schumacher, who previously raced Romeo Palamides-built cars, including a front-hinge flip-top funny car. - BS | Don Schumacher really started to run well when crew chief John Hogan came on board in July. Things didn't start so well when Don drove the car into the ditch during the Super Stock Nationals, and the team showed up at Detroit on July 26 with the front of the car wearing primer. A blown transmission on a warm-up run was followed by an off-pace 8.90 in the opening round of the eight-car show that lost to Bruce Larson. The next day (July 26), Detroit ran them again, only now they expanded the field to twelve cars. In the first round, Don's 7.82/182.18 beat Bob Fulp in the "Limefire." He got to solo in round two and made an easy 13.02 pass. In the semi-final, he had trouble and shut down to 11.73/78 in a loss to Larson's 8.27/166. Sunday was the last day for the three-day event at Detroit, and this time Schumacher went all the way. An off-pace 8.42/170.77 defeated Fulp's equally troubled 8.46/172 in the first round. In the second round, his 7.89/181.80 took out Mike Burkhart's 7.91/153. He got some revenge over Larson in the semi-final by running 7.78/183 over Bruce's 7.79/182. In the final, he faced Kelly Chadwick, and his 7.93/184.42 got the victory over Chadwick's 8.27/145.

Notes: Bruce Larson was one of the best Chevrolet funny car racers of all time. The "USA-1" 1967 Camaro was the second funny campaigned by Larson. It was one of the best in the northeast. The car featured a Logghe Stage II chassis and a 427 Chevrolet engine backed by an automatic transmission. The Camaro held the NHRA National record at 7.41 seconds in 1968 when he amazed everyone at SSDI Nats with the Low ET. That run hurt the motor and Bruce had to put in backup motor for the rest of the weekend (still went rounds). The "USA-1" 67 Camaro raced until 1969. Larson now makes exhibition runs with the restored car. (Photos provided by Mike Ditty. Info provided by James Ibusuki and draglist.com) | Capitol Raceway held its Mr. Chevrolet race on August 13 and it was fitting that Larson took the crown. He beat Joe Black in round one, with a 7.83/178.21 while in round two his 7.80/184.94 beat Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette. In the semifinals, he beat Mel Perry with a 7.90/182.18 to move into the final against Dick Bourgeois. Larson took the victory with a final round 7.90/189. Won NE Dragway Funny Car Nats in 68 at 7.71/189.87. Cecil held a best of three match race between Larson and Jim Liberman on October 6. Bruce won the first race with a quick-leaving 7.64/188.28 over JJ's 7.59/187." Jungle Jim's" 7.78/187 won the second race when Larson fouled away an 8.03/183.66. In the deciding race, both ran well, but Liberman's 7.81/183 won the match over Larson's close 7.82/186.72. Bruce set both ends of Maple Grove track record with a 7.62/186.72 in October. On October 13 he faced off against Clare Sanders driving Liberman's #2 car in a best of three match race at Englishtown. He lost the match when he fouled in the first two races although he had run the best time of the two at 7.78. The two came out for one more run and Bruce beat Sanders' 7.88 with a 7.65. The track record was 7.64 at the time. The two had a rematch on November 3 at New England. This time Larson won all three races with times of 8.23/155.97,a track record 7.59 at 184.42 and 7.98/171.42. Sanders was not running well, as his best was 8.23/177. He was at Irwindale on November 9 for the Mopar vs Chevy Funny Car Race. A tire-smoking 8.28/180.36 lost to Charlie Allen in the first round, while an 8.34 in round two lost to Steve Bovan's 8.33 in Nelson Carter's Charger in round two. Bruce got his lone win in round three where he beat Larry Reyes. He lost three straight against Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's "Cuda at Irwindale on November 28. Bruce smoked the tires in the first and third rounds while his best run, a 7.93/182.92 in the second race, lost to Siroonian's 7.88/186. At the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Bruce broke a pinion shaft in the first round, against Leonard Hughes. In his second race, something in the drivetrain broke and his 8.39/176.81 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.69/193. He was unable to repair for his third race and Mike Burkhart replaced him.

Notes: 1968 Charger designed by Gary Dyer with a dragster-type roll cage, built by Race Car Specialties. Campaigned during '68 season and burned to the ground in late '68 at US 30 (Gary, Ind.) due to oil filter coming off the engine, catching fire, and injuring Gary Dyer. Ran 7.47/196 on that pass. Also ran 7.46/195.87 at NY National 68. | Norm Kraus and driver Gary Dyer were a tough act to beat in the early years of Funny Car racing. The '65, '66, and '67 seasons saw the team beat every superstar at one time or another. Then came '68. It was not a good year for the "Mr. Norm" team. It started well enough with Dyer driving the new Charger into the high sevens with ease. It looked like the start of another successful season. Then came the trouble. While racing in Texas, the motor blew and Gary got the car stopped and got out OK, but then for no known reason, the car caught fire. It burned to the ground as once the magnesium caught fire, there was no putting it out. All that was left was the bare chassis. So, while Dyer set about rebuilding the car, they hired a local driver to drive the '67 mount. That didn't go so well when the driver lost control of the car at Cordova and smacked it into a telephone pole. The driver was seriously injured and the car was totaled. After this, the team was out of racing for a short while as they had no car. Then came the oil filter incident at Gary US 30 mentioned above.

Notes: This was one of the first five funny's to top 200 mph. Making a lot of horsepower to push that big frontal area to those speeds. Sid debuted this car for some test runs at Memphis on August 17. The car had just been finished earlier that week. With some old slicks on the car the ET's weren't the best, but on the second pass he ran 174 and on his last of three runs he turned 179.64. This was on a 184 track record. Best et in '68 was a 7.51. Confirmed 7.76 Jackson Sid raced at an eight-car show at New York on October 13. He singled in the first round, when Ken Poffenberger failed to fire, and another single run of 7.88 got him into the final when Al Hanna was unable to show. In the final, a 7.89 finished second best to Henry Garcia's 7.73 in the Car Shop Camaro. - RH | Photo from the '68 OCIR mfg. meet. Ran 7.80s.

Notes: Larry was at Lions on January 28 for the second half of its Winternationals. Fullerton's 9.27/138.03 qualified for the 32 car show. He lost to Ronnie Runyan in the opening round of eliminations. He was at Lions on June 29 for a double Funny Car show. There were two eight-car fields, with those that didn't qualify quick enough for the first eight fell into a second eight-car field. Fullerton failed to qualify for the quick eight and well as the second eight. He did get into the show as an alternate, but his 9.52/122.95 lost to Gene Modlin's 9.36/129. On August 3, he was at Irwindale for its Gold Cup Championships. He fouled against eventual winner Gas Ronda in the first round and shut off to 10.30-99.53. As far as I know, Fullerton ran SOHC Ford's in his cars until his Maverick switched to an early Hemi in Mid-'70. Larry ran 8.46 at Irwindale.

Notes: Tom was on top of his game in 1968; his best time of 7.52 set early in the year would have been a lot lower if the car had not been totaled in a crash at Virginia Beach, the same place he had run his Top Speed of 202 in May. But in June he had just finished running 201 and his chute failed to release. He hit the brakes hard until the master cylinder let go. Grove ended up skidding sideways into a tree and demolishing the Mustang. He finished out the season with his 1967 car. Before the crash, he had beaten the best. On April 7, he had a hiccup at Kingston where he lost to Larry Reyes in the "Super 'Cuda" in a best of three match. Reyes won their first race with an 8.12/187 when Grove's Mustang went into a wheelstand. There had never been a 7-second Funny Car run at Kingston until their second race when both ran sevens. Grove's 7.99/187.50 prevailed over Reyes' quicker 7.98. In the final race, Larry got the holeshot and his 8.10 went on to win the match over Grove's quicker 7.98. On April 14 he beat Don Nicholson in a best of three match. Another match race victory came at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 3. There he stopped Arnie Beswick three straight. His times were 5.15/148.50 over a fouling Beswick, followed by a track record 5.05/150 and a 5.35/140. He was at Aquasco for the Funny Car Invitational, but after the first-round it was rained out. He had run 8.63/184.42 (Top Speed) in a first-round solo, and he was Aquasco's track mph record holder at 187.88. Tom won the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18. He ran 7.79/189.06 over Roger Lindamood (8.10/179), and in the semifinals, he reset both ends of the track record with a 7.64/194.38 over Roy Gay who shut off. In the final, a 7.65/192.70 stopped Jim Liberman's 7.85/182. On June 8, he beat the "Hemi-Cuda" of Fred Goeske three straight at Capitol. In the first race, his 7.71 at a new track record speed of 196.92 beat Goeske's 7.96/170. The speed was 5 mph faster than the old track record. Tommy got the ET record as well in their second race with his 7.64 at 190.66 beating the 'Cuda's 7.99/178. A final 7.76/196.92 finished up the match. He ran his lowest ET of the year at a match race at Cecil County against Liberman on June 19. He beat Jim in the first race with a track record 7.52 at 197.36. In the second race, a 7.81/193.12 did the deed, winning the match. - Ron Howard

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis, and a 426 Chrysler Hemi powered the car on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Photo courtesy Mike Ditty. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info courtesy James Ibusuki). | Reyes raced Ed Schartman on March 3 at Lakeland for a best two out of three match race. He took the win by winning the first two races with 8.22 and 8.27 times. In the last race, Schartman won with an 8.35. On April 7, Reyes had a tough best of three match against Tommy Grove at Kingston. Both cars were strong runners in early '68, with Grove's Mustang being the "killer car" on the match race circuit. Grove went into a wheelstand in the first race, and Reyes won with an 8.12 at a track record speed of 187.50. Tommy got a holeshot win in the second race with his 7.99 beating Reyes' track record 7.98. These were the first sevens even turned by an Funny Car at Kingston. In the final race, the "Super 'Cuda" got the holeshot, and its 8.10 beat Grove's 7.98. On April 13, Larry beat Terry Hedrick in a best of three match at Houston, and the following day (April 14), he downed Kelly Chadwick three straight, running a track record 7.94. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for an eight-car show. A first-round 8.02/167.28 beat Bob Sullivan's 8.30/181, while in the semifinals, he soloed with a 9.54/104.40 when Ted Detar's new car broke. In the final, he faced Dick Harrell. The two had a good race, with Reyes' 7.92 (Low ET) at 177.16, beating out Harrell's 8.03/182. Early in June, Reyes took on "Dyno Don" Nicholson in a best of three match at Milan. In their first race, Don's 7.81/175 beat Larry's 7.88/183.66, but the "Super 'Cuda" came back to win the next two races for the match race with runs of 7.84/178.57 and 7.78/182.92. He won the Norwood, New England, 1/8 mile Funny Car Championships on June 21. Going into this race, the track record was held by Grove at 5.08. It was an eight-car show, and Reyes ran 5.12/146.34 in the opening round to beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 5.23/142. He broke the track record in the semifinals with a 5.03/149 over Lew Arrington's 5.86/115 in the "Brutus" Firebird. He faced Dick Loehr in the final. Dick's Mustang had engine trouble and slowed to 10.4 while Reyes lowered the track mark ever further with a 4.99 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was back at Milan for another match race with Schartman. Reyes won the first race with an 8.02/181 over Eddie, who blew a transmission. But the Comet was strong on that day and, after fixing the trans, beat Larry in the last two races. In the second race, Larry's 7.99/179.79 lost to Schartman's 7.81/181, and in the last race, Ed reset the track record with a 7.73 at 184 over Reyes' 7.87/189.64. Near the end of June, he went to Detroit for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and he opened up eliminations by running 8.07/176.81 over Tom Smallwood's 8.24/159 in the "Kingfish." But a second-round 8.13/177.51 lost to Hedrick's 7.83/179. Another win came at the Supercharged Invitational at Capitol on July 13. There he ran 7.77/191.88 to beat Lyle Fisher's 7.88/188 in the first round. In round two, his 8.07/185.94 advanced when Fred Goeske blew a transmission. A semifinal 7.68/189.06 beat Arrington, who got out of shape and shut down. He faced Nicholson in the final, and he covered him easily with a 7.54/192.03 (Top Speed and Low ET), taking the win over "Dyno's" 8.05/181. By this time, the "Super 'Cuda" was considered one of the top FCs to beat as it was almost always setting top times everywhere it ran. Yet another win came at the Super Stock Nationals. There a final round 7.53 beat a blower exploding Schartman in the final. Reyes had set Top Speed of the meet at 193.12. | Confirmed 7.54/192.03 at Fremont 1968 - Mick Coyne

Notes: Jim started his '68 season at Irwindale's New Year's day race by qualifying third with an 8.08 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.18/180 beat Lew Arrington's 8.40/175, but he failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #1 with a 7.88/180.72 on January 14 at OCIR for an eight-car show and his first-round 7.85/183.28 beat the New Breed. A semifinal 8.02/181.08 beat Gas Ronda's 8.33. In the final, Jim's 7.86/183.28 beat Clare Sanders' 7.71/187.91 in the Limefire. He then went to Lions for the AHRA Winter meet where he qualified way down in twelfth place with an 8.52/141.50 in the 32 car field. He had an easy first-round race, but then ran his best time ever at 7.75/184.80 in round two over Marv Eldridge's 8.08/174. In the third round, he advanced with an 8.18 and in the semifinal, an 8.05 beat Gene Snow's 8.91. He was to face Don Nicholson in the final and Jim was good enough to give Don extra time to fix his transmission he blew in the semis. But the starter signaled for the backup car of Snow to fire just as Nicholson came out of the pits. There was a lot of yelling by racers, officials, and fans, but Liberman beat Snow for the win with a 7.84. On February 24, Lions held a sixteen-car show and an 8.39 qualified Jim eleventh. Arrington ran a first-round 7.95/183 to drop his 8.39/177.86 in the first round. The following day on February 25, he set Low ET at 7.83 in the final while beating Roger Lindamood who fouled in the final at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 7.89/182.92 beat Steve Bovan (8.32), a second round 7.84/183.28 beat Ray Alley (8.35), and a semifinal 7.86/180.72 beat Arrington (8.20). Thirty funny cars showed to qualify on March 3 for a sixteen-car field at Irwindale and Jim qualified third with an 8.12/178.21. A first-round 7.99/174.41 advanced when Eldridge's Corvette lost fire on the line. A second round 8.18/171.10 beat Fred Goeske's ailing 8.73 and in the semis, he lost to Steve Bovan. In May at Pittsburgh for their Funny Car Championships, he made it into the finals only to lose to a Terry Hedrick holeshot. Jim's better 7.88 lost to Terry's 7.92. Another runner-up finish came on May 18 at Cecil County's Fuel Showdown. He ran well, posting a 7.79/182.18 first-round win over Bill Lawton's 7.96/180, and a second round 7.92/182.18 over Arnie Beswick's 8.17/174. But in the final a 7.85/182.92 was no match for Tom Grove's 7.65/192.70. Another win came on May 30 at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. His final round 7.88/183.28 beat the Kingfish. Aquasco held their third annual Funny Car Invitational in June and a first-round 7.98/181.80 beat a fouling Beswick, but the rest of the meet was rained out. On June 19, Liberman and Grove had a match race at Cecil County. In the first race, Tom's track record 7.52/197.36 beat Jim who fouled away a 7.85/181.08. In the second race, Tom got Jim two straight with a 7.81/193 over JJ. He did better against Nicholson who debuted his new Cougar at a match race at Capitol. Jim won the first race with a 7.66/187.88 when Don blew his trans and rain washed out the other two races so Liberman won the match. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 27, he broke on the line in the first round, advancing Tony Wahlay. He was at Detroit Dragway on August 6 where he drove off the track to avoid hitting some people that were on the track. He was OK, but the car was damaged. Jim ran 185.92 on September 22 for a Maple Grove track record in a match race against Eddie Schartman. JJ's 7.72/184.80 won the first race over Ed's 7.95/177, but another 7.72/185.92 was foiled by the evil red light. Ed won the last race and the match. Another match race was run against Larry Reyes on October 4 at Norwood, Mass. Reyes beat JJ two straight before Jim won the final with a track record 4.94 at 152.54. He then took on Bruce Larson for a best of three match at Cecil on October 6. Jim lost the first race when Larson got a good jump and his 7.64/188 held on to win over JJ's quicker 7.59/187.50. But Jim came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.78/187.50 and 7.81/183.66. At the Lions Funny Car Championships on November 16, Jim set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.65/187.50 and went on to win over Jack Chrisman in the final. He won both his first and semifinal rounds with 7.65's. At the OCIR Manufacturer's meet, he ran a 7.89/181.44 best, but failed to run fast enough to make the final. He qualified second with an 8.20/185 (Top Speed) at Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine meet, but lost to Kip Brundage in the first round. Jim won the final race of the year he competed in, the first OCIR All-Pro event of '69, which was run on 12/29/68. He qualified third with a 7.80/182.30 and advanced past the first-round when Charlie Allen broke. He had another easy run in the semis when Randy Walls fouled against him. In the final he ran his all-time bests of 7.53/193.12 to beat Don Schumacher's 7.57/196.50. — Ron Howard

Notes: Doug Thorley's new 1968 Corvair, Logghe Chassis, Fiberglass Trends one-piece flip-top Corvair body, Al Bergler aluminum. I think Watson paint, Kelly lettering. This car replaced Doug's '67 Indy winner. Dick Bourgeois and Earl Wade took the car on tour during the summer of '68. On a Sunday night at Motor City Dragway, Dick ran a 7.57 for Low ET over Lew Arrington's Brutus, Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda, and Don Gay in his rainbow Firebird. In '69, the Corvair body was replaced with a Javelin body but continued with the blown 490 Chevy and ran the Coke tour. | Bourgeois and Wade were at Carlsbad on February 25 for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.34/171.42 lost to Gene Conway's 8.35/175 in the "Destroyer" Jeep. Dick ran a series of match races against Don Nicholson in March, but unfortunately, he lost all three to Nicholson. They were run on Mt. Houston, March 24 at Dallas, and March 27 down in Greer, South Carolina. In early April, the "Doug's Headers" Corvair was at Southeastern Raceway for a four-car race. He pulled a holeshot on Nicholson in the first race and looked to have the race won until he got out of shape and nearly crashed into Don's Comet. "Dyno" roared past for the win. In Dick's next race, Arnie Beswick fouled, and Bourgeois won with a 7.09 on the 900-foot track. Dick really laid one on Lew Arrington in the first round, on May 5 at Aquasco's Funny Car Invitational. His 8.31/178.21 beat Lew's very sleepy track record 7.77/181. It rained after the first round was run, and the race was canceled. At the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18, Dick fouled away a 7.95/184.80 in the first round against Roy Gay. Union Grove held the Olympics of Drag Racing on May 30, and although Dick failed to win, he set Low ET at 7.68. He met with Bill Lawton at Capitol on June 1 for a best of three match. He was at Gary, Indiana, for the East vs. West Funny Car meet the following day. Six cars were competing, with all making three runs. In his first race, Nicholson's quick-leaving 7.89/180 beat his 7.78/186. He came back to win his second race with a 7.80/183 over Ron O'Donnell's 8.30/176. Dick really cut loose in his final race, running a track record 7.55 at 185 to beat an out-of-shape Arnie Beswick. Bill beat him two straight. Once again, he ran Nicholson at a match race at Houston, and once again, "Dyno" beat him. Don won two straight before Bourgeois came back in the final race to win with an 8.39/177.86 over Don's shut-off run. On June 23, Bourgeois was called in as a last-minute replacement for Tommy Grove, who had crashed his Mustang into a telephone pole the night before in Virginia. Grove was supposed to race Terry Hedrick at Kinston. Hedrick was racing against Grove the day the accident occurred, and he had blown his engine. He showed up at Kinston and was unable to run. So Dick made three solo passes. He broke both ends of the track record on his first run with a 7.64/189.47. He also ran an out-of-shape 8.29/171.42 and a 7.93/187.50. On July 14, in Connecticut, Dick faced Lawton in another best of three match. Lawton won the first race while Dick set a 7.81 track record to win the second race. In the third race, Bill beat the Corvair to win the match. Dick was at Cecil County for the first day of the CARS Magazine Meet. He fouled away an 8.38/169.81 in the first round against Dick Loehr, but he found himself back in the running in the second round. There Dick ran 8.17/172.08 to beat Nicholson's blower popping Comet (he had crashed the Cougar). An 8.17/174.75 lost to Frank Federici's 7.91/179 in the "Shark" Corvette in the semifinal. Bourgeois then found himself at Capitol Raceway on August 13 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. In the opening round of competition, his 8.13/186.32 was defeated by Federici's 7.94/185. Dick got back into the show on the "break rule" for being the Low ET loser from round one. He almost made good with his second chance. He raced Malcolm Durham, and Durham blew a tire while Bourgeois advanced with an 8.42/183.28. Dick Harrell fouled against him in the semifinal, and he cooled it with a 10.00/102.97. He faced Bruce Larson in the final, and the two had a good race. They came off the line together, and just inching away at the finish line for the win was the "USA-1" Camaro of Larson's with a 7.90/189. Dick also ran 187 at Detroit Dragway in August. On September 21, he was at Lions for an eight-car show where 35 cars showed. All cars ran together in a qualifying round where the lowest eight ETs advanced into the eight-car show regardless of winning or losing. Dick ran a 7.90/183.66 over Jack Chrisman to qualify. He only needed a 9.03/172.08 to beat Rusty Delling's crossed-up run in the "New Breed" Firebird in the first round. The semifinal was a heartbreaker for Bourgeois and Wade when they lost fire on the line and gave Bob Pickett a solo into the final. Dick refired the Corvair after Pickett had run and ran a 7.98/172.41. Pickett was running 8.30s. - Ron Howard

Notes: The car was built in 1968 to replace the scary Dart. Snow's first Logghe car. I think this started with a B&M Torqueflite, but by the end of summer, it had a Crowerglide and began running 200 mph. I know this car ran in the 7's; we need to check the best time. The 205 at OCIR was at the Mfg. Meet, so it is accurate. - Bill McLauchlan | On August 17, at Houston, Snow hit 200.88 for the first 200 MPH funny. At Wichita, 202.70 was the new mark. In October at Irwindale, a 196.50 was good enough for a new track record. - Ron Howard 7.65 at San Antonio in Dart or Charger? - Danny White; Photo: Hemmings Muscle Machines (Sep. 2007): p. 33 - MB

Notes: Nickname: "The Professor." Added Blower, Sponsor. Early in June, Chadwick was one of four cars running in a match race at LaPlace. He ran a personal best (to this point) of 7.89 to beat a fouling Leonard Hughes at 8.06. In his second race, he shut down early to an 8.78 that lost to Tom Smallwood's 8.13 in the "Kingfish." The third race saw Chadwick doing battle with Della Woods' new Charger. The Camaro took the win with an 8.30/181.80. Kelly was at Amarillo on June 23 for a best-of-three-match race against Gene Snow. He was having transmission problems and lost two straight. Snow's transmission gave out in the third race, and Chadwick won with an 8.36/189.46. The following week (June 28), he was at Detroit for the Midwest Super Stock Funny Car Championships. A 7.98/182.92 advanced past the first-round when Don Schumacher lost fire, and in round two, an 8.04/169.81 beat Hank Garcia's 8.44/159 in the "Car Shop" Camaro. In the semifinals, he fouled against eventual winner Fred Goeske. On July 4, he was in Oklahoma City for an eight-car show. His 8.01/183.28 beat the "Site Brothers" 'Cuda in the opening round of eliminations. In the semifinals, his 7.93/191.80 beat Leonard Hughes' 8.08/190. It was an all-Chevy final as he faced Mike Burkhart's similar Camaro in the final. Chadwick got the victory, running Low ET with his 7.81/191.14 getting the best of Mike's 7.98/190. He raced Paul Stefansky in a best of three match at Houston in July. Kelly won all three races when Paul's car developed transmission problems. Chadwick's times were 8.13/185.18 in the first and only race, and he ran two solo passes of 8.45/181.80 and 8.44/185 to sew up the match. Hr ran a confirmed 7.79 at Detroit and 7.93/188.28 at Bristol 9/20/68. His '68 record had him race 68 times, and he won approximately 75% of his races.

Notes: Durham spent the off-season completing a new Logghe-chassised Camaro that proved to be one of his best rides. He clocked 7.5-second elapsed times regularly in 1968 and broke the 200-mph barrier in 1969. - NHRA | Malcolm was at Orlando for the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships on February 18. He qualified for the show but hurt his motor and could not run. On May 5, he was at the Funny Car Invitational at Aquasco, but he fouled against Clare Sanders in the first round. Durham was at Cecil County for the Fuel Showdown on May 18. He was caught napping on the line by Arnie Beswick in the first round, when Malcolm's 8.16/180 lost to Beswick's 8.34/156. He faced off against Beswick in a best two out of three match race at Aquasco on June 16. Malcolm had a bad day losing two straight. In the first race, he lost fire, and Arnie soloed to a win. In the second race, his throttle linkage broke, and he lost to Arnie's off pace 9.74/124. He was at Cecil County for the CARS Magazine All-Star International race in July. In the first round, he ran an 8.43/176 that lost to Frank Federici's "Shark" at 7.95/187. Another match race was run on August 4 at Gary, Indiana. His opponent was Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" Charger this time. Once again, Malcolm had problems and lost two straight. The first race saw Dyer's 7.74/180 just outright beat Durham's 8.35/150. In the second race, he blew a transmission and lost to Gary's 7.71/185. Durham did much better at Connecticut in early September when he faced off against Bill Lawton. Malcolm won the first race when Lawton's Mustang blew an engine. Bill could not run, and Durham soloed for the next race and won the match. The "Strip Blazer" Camaro became stronger and stronger as the season progressed. He won at his home track, Aquasco, for the first time on September 22. It was supposed to be an eight-car show, but Clare Sanders arrived late and Tommy Grove had no car, so only six cars ran. An 8.03/175.43 in the first round, beat Mel Perry, while in the semifinal, Durham got the odd-lot single and ran 8.12/178.21. In the final, he faced Bobby Wood, and his 8.20/175.78 got him the victory over Woods' 8.26/174. On September 29, he ran a best of three match race against Larry Reyes in the super tough "Super 'Cuda" at Englishtown. Reyes won the first race with a 7.71/190 when Durham lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.60/117.34. In the second race, the Camaro won with an 8.03, and in the third race, Malcolm wrapped up the match with a 7.94/183.66. Early in October, he beat Shirl Greer two straight at Houston. Every pass he made beat the former track record. He ran 7.69/186 over Shirl's 7.81 in the first race and a 7.63/188 beat a crossed-up Greer in the second race. Malcolm made a solo third pass and set a 7.57 track record at 182.92. Notes: In 1968, Fred ordered a new funny car to be built by Ron Scrima and Pat Foster at Exhibition Engineering. The'68 Barracuda was more traditional than the one it replaced. Still sponsored by the Plymouth Dealers Association of Southern California, Goeske called it the Hemi-Cuda II. The car debuted with a win at Lions Drag Strip, and Goeske was the hottest funny car in Southern California for the next couple of months. Fred ran a best of 7.78 at 191.88 with the car. A 426 late-hemi powered this car with a B&M Torqueflite. |In one of Fred's earliest races with the car, he faced Dick Harrell for a best of three match at OCIR. In their first race, the 'Cuda's 8.57/173.07 beat the Camaro's fouling,9.13/168. Hareel evened the score in the second race as he got out first, and his 8.17/173 held of Goeske's 8.20/178.92.Goeske then beat Harrell in the final race for the match race win.Fred faced off against Charlie Allen in a best two out of three match race at Irwindale on January 28. He won the first race with an 8.33/174.41 when Allen's Dart had the steering fail. Fred soloed with another 8.33 to win the second race and the match while Charlie repaired his Dart. Allen did manage to win the third race with an 8.82 ousting Goeske's out-of-shape run. He was at Lions on February 24 for the Funny Car Spectacular. Over 50 cars tried to qualify for the sixteen spots. Fred ran an 8.18 to qualify #6. He picked up to a 7.86/180 in the first round, over Rich Hammons, and in round two, a 7.95/174.41 beat Jack Chrisman's 8.11/176. He took it easy in the semifinal, needing only an 8.98/159.17 to win when Rusty Delling blew his motor in the "New Breed" Firebird. In the final, he faced off against Steve Bovan's Camaro. Unfortunately for Bovan, he lost a transmission, and Goeske motored to an 8.34/171.10 victory. The next day (February 25), he was at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An off pace 8.66/143.76 lost in the first round, to Lew Arrington's 8.00/184. On March 3, he was at a sixteen-car show at Irwindale. Thirty cars attempted to qualify, and Fred managed to qualify #15. He beat Dick Loehr in the first round, with an 8.03/182.18, but the "Hemi-Cuda" came to the line ailing in round two. An 8.73/159.01 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.18/171. He did win Funny Car eliminator at the Bakersfield March Meet, running a final round 8.28/181.44 over Norm Cowdrey. At the HRM Championships at Riverside on March 24, he won his first-round race over Ronnie Runyan with an 8.23, but in the semifinals of the eight-car show, a consistent 8.26 lost to Loehr's 8.07. Fred faced off against Gas Ronda at Irwindale in a best-of-three match race on March 30. He won two straight when Ronda fouled in the first race, and in the second race, the Mustang lost a transmission while Fred ran an 8.02/179.28 to sew up the match. Carlsbad held another Funny Car show on April 7, and Goeske took the win. In the first round, he beat Ronda with an 8.07/171, and a semifinal 8.07/153 beat the Wright Brothers. In the final, he set Low ET at 7.90 while beating Jack Chrisman's Comet. One week later (April 13), he was back in the winner's circle at OCIR over a big field. He advanced past the first round with a 7.89/161.57. In the second round, an 8.07/150 beat Hayden Proffitt. In the semifinal, he had a good race with Loehr's Mustang. His 7.93/179.65 beat Dick's 8.04/182. He ran a 7.91/177.51 for the win in the final, but he didn't need to as Cowdrey had broken on the line. Their roles were reversed on April 28 at Irwindale. It was an eight-car field, and Goeske and Cowdrey again met in the final. The "Hemi-'Cuda" started its march to the final by beating Runyan's 8.48/170 with an 8.27. Fred got a single in the semifinal when Gene Ciambella lost fire, and he advanced with a 7.97. In the final, Goeske set Low ET and Top Speed with a 7.90/182.18, but it was accompanied by and red light giving Cowdrey the victory. On May 4, he raced at OCIR's Funny Car Team Championships. He didn't reach the finals, but he ran well. Another race at OCIR on May 18 featured Funny Cars vs. Fuel Altereds. All cars were to run three races. Fred won all three of his races, running 7.85/184.04 over Sush Matsubara, 8.07/180.72 over Randy Bradford, and finally 8.12/180.72 to beat Willie Borsch. He was at Irwindale for a best of three match against Allen on May 23. He won all three races over Charlie's ailing Dart. Times were 7.99/183.28 over Allen, who not only fouled but lost a transmission as well. In the second race, an 8.12/177.46 beat the Dart's ailing 8.64/120. And to sew in all up, a final 7.99/181.44 defeated Charlie's way off pace 8.81/114. He was at Detroit Dragway for the Midwest Funny Car Championships in June. This was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round, Goeske's 7.85/177.86 beat Dave Pinta. A second-round 7.87/169.49 beat Pat Minick's 8.13/173 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Kelly Chadwick fouled against him in the semifinals advancing into the final against Roger Lindamood. Goeske scored the victory with a 7.84/181.44 over a troubled Lindamood at 9.80-98. He then won a Funny Car race at Union Grove on July 4, setting both ends of the track record with 7.58/189.86 times. Capitol Raceway held its Supercharged Invitational on July 13, and Fred was there. In the first round, he beat Dick Bourgeois with a 7.84/187.10, but he lost a transmission against eventual winner Larry Reyes in round two. He also competed at the Super Stock Nationals, where he was runner-up to Reyes on Friday with a 7.93/190.66, finishing second to the "Super'Cuda's" 7.70/187. Also, in July, he set both ends at Maple Grove with a 7.81/183.44. He had a bad weekend when he faced Arrington for a best of three match at Maple Grove on August 10. Fred Fred lost two straight, and Arrington took his mph record away with a 185.18 run in the second race. The''Cuda was ailing and could only run a best of 8.79. The next day (August 11), he was in Milan for another match race against Loehr's "Stampede." Once again, he lost two straight with times of 9.31/105.14 and 8.85/145.39. — Ron Howard

Notes: Guzman and Ward didn't venture out very far from home, but they were tough to beat when they did. On June 16, Art was at Omaha, Nebraska, where he ran 7.95/184.80 to beat a fouling Gene Kidder. In his next race, Ron Leslie fouled away a 7.83/191 while he picked up the win with a 7.81/186.32. The team ventured out to California in July. On the 3rd, Art drove the Corvair to a win over an eight-car field at Irwindale. He was running well, an 8.05/185.18 in the opening round beat Ray Alley, and in the semifinal, his 8.00/187.10 took out Charlie's 8.22/172. He was supposed to face Gas Ronda's Mustang in the final, but Ronda blew a torque convertor while winning his semifinal race. In the final, Gene Conway took his place, and Ward's 8.05/186.72 beat the Jeep's 8.41/181. They won the OCIR Nitro Championships on July 6 over a sixteen-car field. Art qualified #5 with an 8.06/183.28. A first-round 7.89/187.10 beat the "Funny Bunch." In round two, an 8.08/185.94 took out Wendell Shipman, and in the semifinal, an easy 8.32/185.94 advanced when Steve Bovan broke in Nelson Carter's Charger. He faced Dee Keaton's Cougar in the final and won with an 8.10/188.28, beating Keaton's 8.48/151. On October 5, they were at OCIR again. A first-round 8.12/187.50 beat Rich Siroonian's early shut-off run. In the second round, they lost a transmission and gave Dave Beebe a solo pass. As mentioned above, at the World Finals, he was the #1 qualifier in Super Eliminator, but he fouled in the first round. In 1968, this car was the No. 1 Qualifier in Super Eliminator (no Funny Car Eliminator in '68) at the NHRA World Finals in Tulsa. Ran 7.58 in S/XS, a tenth under the record. They also ran 7.79 at Omaha.

Notes: Per Bill Duke, all Sharks were 392 powered. Confirmed 7.95 at Cecil County. | Frank Federici continued to use his '67 car throughout the '68 season. A December '69 Speed and Supercar magazine claimed that the car had run a best of 7.60/203.87. Frank ran at National Trail on June 23. He made two exhibition passes. The first was an 8.24/180.72 that tied the former track ET record and set a new track speed record. On his second pass, an 8.12/181.44 reset both ends of the track record. On July 27 he made it into the final on Saturday at the Cars All-Star International at Cecil County. He had beaten Malcolm Durham earlier with a 7.95/187.10, but in the final, an 8.25/181.08 lost to Dick Loehr's 7.86/182. He didn't do as well on Sunday and failed to make the final rounds. Frank faced off against Bill Lawton at a best two out of three match race at Connecticut on August 4. In the first race, a 7.68/171 by Lawton beat his 8.58/167.28 and in the second race, he lost again when he broke a rear end giving Bill the match race win. | We formerly listed 7.895/195.
