Notes: Dick Loehr was one of many funny car drivers based out of Michigan. An engineer by trade, Dick used his job connections to get sponsorship and assistance for his racing operations. In 1967, Loehr had a new Mustang funny car built. The Max Curtis Ford "Stampede" was much lower than most of its competition. That car debuted with a 427 SOHC engine, later replaced by a reliable 392 Chrysler Hemi, Torqueflite combination. Loehr ran a best of 7.86 at 189.70 with the car at Orange County. The car was replaced by a new, lighter Mustang in 1969. Dick Loehr eventually left funny cars for Pro Stockers. - BS | Dick started the season on New Year's Day at Irwindale, where an 8.40 qualified tenth in the sixteen-car field. He ran a first-round 8.18/180 but lost to Don Nicholson's 7.99/172. At OCIR on January 14 for an eight-car show, he qualified seventh with an 8.29/177.86, but Terry Hedrick's first-round 8.28/182 beat his 8.43/168.22. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet, he qualified third with a 7.79/178.92 and ran another 7.79/176.12 over Mike Burkhart in the first round. A second-round 7.92/179.78 beat Kelly Chadwick's 8.44/162. He had an easy third-round win before meeting Don Nicholson in the semifinal. Both cars lost transmissions, but Don coasted across the line first. Shortly after that (February 4), he went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA did not have a Funny Car class at this time, so the cars had to qualify for Super Eliminator. Unfortunately, Loehr failed to qualify. On February 25, Loehr singled in the opening round with an 8.98/141 when Jack Chrisman had injector problems at the South Coast Funny Car Championships. An 8.14/169.17 beat a tire-smoking Clare Sanders in the second round. In the semifinal, he broke on the line against Roger Lindamood. On March 3, Irwindale held a sixteen-car show, and Dick's 8.21/180.72 qualified seventh. He lost a blower belt and the race in the first round when Fred Goeske's 8.03/182.18 beat his 8.23/153.74. A big win came at Riverside on March 24 for the HRM Championships. On April 13, Loehr was at OCIR for an eighteen-car show. All cars were to run the first round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into round two. Dick's 8.30/175.78 beat Joe Pisano and advanced into round two. His opponent, Steve Bovan, broke, so he soloed with a 10.62. He faced Goeske in the semifinals. An 8.04/182.54 finished second best to Fred's 7.93/179. Another win came at OCIR for their Funny Car Team Championships on May 4. He ran as good as a first-round 7.86/188.66 before winning the final when Charlie Allen broke a rear end. He failed to win on May 10 at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, but he set Top Speed at 185.16. He was at Detroit Dragway on June 28 for the Super Stock Midwest Funny Car Championships, but an off-pace 9.90/132.35 lost to Pat Minick's 8.12/172 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." At Cecil County in July for the CARS All-Star International meet, Dick ran a first-round 7.79/179.28 over Dick Bourgeois' 8.38 and went on to win the final Saturday with a 7.86/182.54 over Frank Federici's 8.25/181. He was at an eight-car show in Gary, Indiana, on July 30. He ran 7.80/188 (Top Speed) in the opening round of eliminations to beat Pat Minick's 7.99/182 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the semifinals, his 7.77/185.71 beat Ed Schartman's 7.92/160. He faced Don Schumacher in the final, and another strong 7.76/175.47 gave Dick the title over Don's 7.97/183. On September 1 at Minnesota Dragways for an eight-car event, Dick lost to Tommy Grove in the first round, Tom's 7.62/191.88 over Dick's (8.02/175.43). Another win came on October 5 at the Irwindale Grand Prix. On November 16, Irwindale held a Ford vs. Mopar Championships, and Loehr's first-round 8.08/177.86 beat Larry Reyes' 8.10/181.08. A second-round 7.87/188.67 beat Fred Goeske's 7.99/182.18. He lost his third race to Dave Beebe's 8.36/185.33 when he got up on two wheels and shut down to a 13.47. He won two of his races at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on December 1, running a best of 7.95/179.28 over Goeske.

Notes: "All American Boy" Charlie Allen's best remembered funny car was this 1968 Dodge Dart. This was his first flip-top funny car, replacing his A/FX Dart. The new machine marked his first flip-top, one-piece unit. It was a test in part for Crower products. The car ran OK, registering high 7s. Allen built the car with a Contemporary Fiberglass body with Kenny Ellis tin. Charlie raced the car under the blue & silver Atlantic Dodge and Crenshaw Dodge banners in 1968. Allen collected a $2000 win at Irwindale at the 16-car experimental Stock Invitationals. Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from James Ibusuki). | Charlie was driving the "Crenshaw" backed Dart at OCIR on July 20. All eight cars ran the first two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Allen made sure he got into the final by setting Low ET in the first round, with a 7.60/184.80 that beat Dale Williams in Jess Tyree's Firebird. In his second race, he ran 8.04/188.28 to beat Dee Keaton's 8.34/177.51. In the final, he met up with Ray Alley. The two had a good race going until Allen's transmission failed to shift, and he shut off to 8.83/113.20 while Alley got the win with a strong 7.88/190. In Mid-August, he was at Mission Raceway in BC, where he set the track record down to 7.60. On a backup run, he ran 7.75. He set a 7.68 Irwindale track record in October. - Ron Howard | Formerly listed this car at 7.95. We need to confirm it was this one and not the new red Dart that went the 7.68. - BP

Notes: Allen debuted his new Dodge Dart funny car sponsored by Crenshaw Dodge at Irwindale on Jan. 28. That began a season filled with match races against other "experimental stock" racers such as Fred Goeske, Gas Ronda, John Mazmanian, Kip Brundage, and Cecil Yother. He took funny car eliminator wins at OCIR and Irwindale. He also won the funny car eliminator title at what was billed as the North American Fuel and Gas Championships at Puyallup Dragway in Washington on June 15 against a 16-car field. Notes: Raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. Confirmed 7.68 at OCIR Also 7.90/194.80 Low ET and Top Speed at OCIR Funny Car Championships. Dave was driving the "Beebe and Fedak" Top Fuel car until the end of July. On August 17, he showed up at Irwindale behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's "Super Chief" Dodge Charger FC. The race was between FC's and Fuel Altereds. In the first round, he ran an 8.21/186.72 that lost to Leon Fitzgerald's 8.11/184 in the "Pure Heaven." In the second round, he picked up to a winning 7.80/191.88 over a crossed up Gary Reed in the "Groundshaker." In the third race, he ran 8.32/190.66 that lost to Sush Matsubara's 7.78/192. It was obvious that the car could run. On August 31, he went to OCIR for a sixteen-car show. Dave set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 7.74/187.88 over Larry Barker's "Psycho" Mustang. In the semifinals, a 7.81/184.80 beat Gene Conway in the "Destroyer" Jeep at 8.27. Unfortunately, in the final, the transmission let go and Gas Ronda soloed for the victory. OCIR held a Fuel Altered vs. Funny Car race on September 21. Once again, Beebe was there. He beat Willie Borsch in the first round, with an 8.35/187.50. A second round 7.95/183.20 beat Matsubara's 8.09/197. And in round three, he made it a clean sweep by beating Fitzgerald's 8.17/189 with an 8.11/191.48. On October 5, OCIR held a 10 car round-robin race. Beebe won two of his three races with a best of 7.95/189.06 while beating Fred Goeske.

Notes: Bovan's Camaro was painted red on the passenger side and blue on the driver's side, with a wide swath of white down the middle, making for somewhat confusing profile photos. - RT | Steve started the season with a Chevy motor (see the other 1968 entry), but he jumped behind the wheel of Nelson Carter's Charger for a while. It was only for a short time as Dave Beebe later took over. But Steve really noticed the power difference between his Chevy and the Keith Black Hemi the Charger ran. Soon after, the Chevy was gone from the Camaro, and a Hemi resided in its place. On June 22, he showed up at OCIR with Barry McGowen's Keith Black Hemi neatly tucked into the Camaro's chassis. Bovan was there for the Funny Car vs. Fuel Altereds race. He beat Sush Matsubara and Randy Bradford in the first two rounds with a best of 8.03/184.80. Due to breakage, he lined up against Charlie Allen in the third round. Steve fouled, but he still proved the power of his new Hemi as he set Top Speed of the day with an 8.03/187.10. He was at Lions on June 29 with the now Hemi-powered car. Larry Fullerton's "Trojan Horse" Mustang broke in the first round, so Bovan soloed at 8.29/184.74. In the semifinal, he had transmission issues and lost to eventual winner Wendell Shipman. The following week (July 3), he was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He fouled against Charlie Allen in the opening round, but he came back out for a couple of consolation races. In one of the races, his 8.25/185.58 beat Ray Alley who broke, and in his other consolation race, he shut off against Gene Modlin in Gene Conway's Firebird. He also ran a best of three best against the "Freight Train" driven by Bob Muravez at this race. In their first race, the Camaro blew its transmission. After Steve replaced it, Steve ran a great 7.63/194.38 beat he lost to Bob's 7.69/196. | Steve ran 8.28/187.10 at OCIR Funny Car Meet in late 1968 (Cars Magazine, January 1969). - Danny White

Notes: Nicholson ran his Comet for the early part of '68. He started the season with a win at Irwindale for the New Year's Day meet. He qualified second with an 8.04 and ran Low ET of the meet in the first round, when his 7.99/172.74 beat Dick Loehr's 8.18/180. An 8.04 and an 8.03 advanced Don into the finals where another 8.04 beat low qualifier Terry Hedrick. At Lions on January 28 for the AHRA Winter meet, Don qualified #1 with a Low ET of the meet 7.63 at 180.36. A first-round 7.65/175.56 advanced when Joe Pisano broke a transmission. Another 7.72/180.72 advanced Dyno Don into the third round where his 8.02/169.85 beat Ronnie Runyan. In the semis, both Nicholson and Dick Loehr had transmission problems, but Don won the coasting contest. He was to face Jim Liberman for the title, but even though Jim gave him extra time to fix his trans, Don was not ready. Gene Snow was brought to the line to face Liberman again (he had lost to Jim in the semifinal). The starter motioned Gene to fire up and just as he did, Nicholson's car came running out of the pits. There was quite a bit of yelling by officials, fans, and racers, but in the end, Snow ran and lost to Liberman's strong 7.84. It was just a bump in the road for Nicholson as at the next race, the second annual Stardust Open, he qualified #1 with a 7.94 and set Low ET at 7.83 while beating Ed Schartman in the final. He then took on Terry Hedrick driving the "Seaton's Shaker" Corvair at a match race at OCIR, winning the first two rounds with a best of 7.97/172.74 before smoking the tires and shutting down in the last race. On March 3 at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show, he qualified second with a 7.99/180.46. A first-round 8.09/149.49 beat Al Vanderwoude (8.45). A second round 8.00/169.49 just nipped Lew Arrington's 8.03 at a fast closing 183.68. A semifinal 7.88/182.54 over Ronnie Runyan came close to his 7.81 track record. He was to face Steve Bovan in the final, but it was never run as a curfew ended the race. Then came a series of match races in April. On the 6th, he was at New York for a best of three against Hedrick. Don lost that match, but he won the following day at Cecil County where he took on another Corvair. This time he faced the "Doug's Headers" car driven by Dick Bourgeois. Don won the first race with his 8.03/170.77 beating the Corvair's 8.19/175 and in the second race, Dick fouled away an 8.39/124 while "Dyno" coasted to the win with a 9.78/89.95. While Nicholson had already sewn up the win, they came back for one more race. This time Bourgeois got the win with an 8.04/179 when "Dyno" fouled at 8.09/168.22. These two would face each other again on April 11 in Ontario, Canada. Don won their first race with an 8.47/161, but he fouled in the second and broke a transmission in the third. Shortly after that, (April 14), he faced the strong Mustang of Tommy Grove and he lost that match as well. He had a rematch against Hedrick on May 3 at Detroit. Once again, Hedrick got the better of him. In their first race, Don’s 8.36/164.83 lost to Terry's 8.08/177. He came back to win the second with a close 8.15/171.75 beating the Chevy driver's 8.16/175. In the third race, Nicholson had problems and shut off to 10.23 while Hedrick picked up the match race victory with an 8.09/177. On May 30, he competed at the Olympics of Drag Racing at Union Grove, but lost a supercharger and went out early. A match race against Bourgeois was run at Houston early in June and Don's first two runs of 8.24/161.89 and 8.66/153.55 were enough to beat Dick two straight. The Corvair's final 8.39/177 won the last race when Don shut off. By late June, Nicholson was driving the Cougar, which debuted at a match race at Capitol against Jim Liberman.

Notes: Chrisman started the year at Lions for the AHRA Funny Car meet on January 28. It didn't go too well. He qualified 31 with a 9.90/154.90 and lost a motor on the line in round one. He ran 8.40 to qualify 13th on February 24, again at Lions, and ran 8.09/180.00 to win his first-round race. An 8.11/176 failed to beat Fred Goeske in the second round. The following day at Carlsbad, he had injection problems and couldn't run, giving Dick Loehr a single. Chrisman was at Lions on March 30, where all fourteen cars made three runs. His 9.14/145.11 lost to Bob Pickett's 9.10/109 when both cars got out of shape in his first race. Motor trouble kept him from making a second run, and on the third, his ailing Comet lost to Johnny Wright's 8.41/160. After doing a stint with Hayden Proffitt's Rebel, Amos Satterlee came back as the chief mechanic. On April 7, Jack ran a best of 8.06/182.18 and finished runner-up to Fred Goeske at the Carlsbad Funny Car Championships. A first-round loss to Dick Harrell's 8.17 to Chrisman's 8.32 followed on May 4 at OCIR. An 8.02/151.50 qualified him second at Lions on May 18, but the pass cost him as a timing chain broke, and he bent some valves. As a result, he was unable to race. He was at Tulsa on June 9 for a best-of-three-match race against Don Gay. Jack lost the first race to the Pontiac, but he ran a strong 7.64 to win over Gay, who lost a motor in the second race. Gay could not return for the third race, so Jack soloed for the match race victory. At Irwindale on June 22, Jack lost to Dee Keaton in the second round. Jack was at Irwindale on August 17 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. There were four of each that were to race round-robin. In his first race, he ran 8.13/179.28, but it wasn't strong enough to beat Gary Reed's 7.69/204 in the "Groundshaker."In the second race against Sush Matsubara, the Comet broke at 1/8 track and lost to Sush's 9.47/163. The car could not run the last race, and Willie Borsch filled in for him. A big win at Lions on October 12 followed with his 7.98/177.86 dropping Dale Pulde in the final. He almost pulled it off again on November 16 at Lions, where he qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 7.97/185.44. He then ran two 7.88's at 185.56 and 181.08 to beat Ronnie Runyon twice(Ronnie had gotten back into the show on the "break rule"). That got him into the final against Jim Liberman. Jack had to shut off on the line with a leaking transmission. He also raced at the OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. It was his last season running a Comet.

He ran an 8.24/181.80 at Carlsbad on 2/25/68. - Ron Howard | Confirmed 7.72 at Cecil County. | Lew started the season by running at the Irwindale New Year's Day race. Thirty-three cars showed for the sixteen available spots, and Lew's 8.44 qualified eleventh. In the first round, an 8.40/175.78 lost to Jim Liberman's 8.18/180. Lew qualified second with a 7.99 at the Funny Car Spectacular at Lions on February 24. He beat Jim Liberman's 8.39/177 in the first round, with a 7.95/183.66. In the second round, he ran an off pace 8.64/174.75 that lost to Gas Ronda's troubled, but even slower, 8.75/144. The following day (February 25) found Lew at Carlsbad for the South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 8.00/184.82 (Top Speed) beat Fred Goeske. A second-round 8.24/181.80 beat Gene Conway, but in the semifinals, Liberman's 7.86/180 beat his 8.20/182.18. On March 3, he was at Irwindale for a sixteen-car show where 30 cars attempted to qualify. He qualified #14 with an 8.36/173.74. He beat Clare Sanders in the "Limefire" Barracuda in the first round, with a 7.97/186.32 (Top Speed). In the second round, he lost a close one to Don Nicholson's 8.00/169 to his 8.03/183.68. He was at Pittsburgh for its Funny Car Championships on May 4, but he lost to Eddie Schartman in the first round. Lew set a 7.77 track record at Aquasco on May 5 during the running of the Funny Car Invitational. Unfortunately, he was caught napping by Dick Bourgeois, who beat him with an 8.31/178 while "Brutus" played catch up, setting that record while running 181.44. Arrington had a best-of-three-match race against Hayden Proffitt in the "Grand Rebel SST" at Norwood's 1/8 mile track on May 10. Proffitt won the first race when Lew got crossed up and slowed to 6.62, but he came back to win the next two races and the match with a best of 5.62/136. On May 26, Arrington was in New Orleans for a best of three match against Sid Foster. Sid's Mustang was having severe handling problems and could not get down the track straight, but he still managed to win their first race when Lou fouled. Arrington easily won the last two races for the match race victory with runs of 8.14/180.36 and 8.24/178.21.

Notes: AKA the Super Chief. This is Steve Bovan at OCIR in 1968. The car ran mainly on the West Coast in 1968. The fans loved the car as the Keith Black hemi always ran great. Nelson held a contest asking the fans to name the car. They came up with "Super Chief" for his Indian (Native American) heritage. The 7.68 was run at OCIR. - Danny White | Steve started driving the car in early April. He raced Nelson's car at Carlsbad on April 7 for an eight-car show where he made it into the semifinals before Jack Chrisman's 8.06/182 beat him. On April 13, he was at OCIR, where 20 cars ran the first-round, and the lowest eight ETs advanced into round two. Bovan had no problem advancing as his 7.81/195.64 was Low ET and Top Speed of the meet. In round two, however, the big Charger broke, giving Dick Loehr a free ride into the semifinals. He was back at OCIR on May 4 for its 1968 1/2 Funny Car Team Championships, but he failed to reach the finals. Another event at OCIR that he participated in was the Fuel Altered vs. Funny Cars race on May 18. Steve won all three of his races and set a 7.68 track record. He first beat a fouling Leon Fitzgerald with a 7.76/193.96. Then a 7.85/194.38 beat Willie Borsch's 8.17/187. Then he set his track record with a speed of 195.64 while beating Gary Reed's 8.06/195 in his last race. - RH | Four-page feature in 2/69 Super Stock and FX magazine. - RT

Notes: The '68 season had to be the best for Chevy-powered FCs. Many of them were being built, often setting Low ET or Top Speed at many events. The Chevy engine was doing this at a fraction of the cost compared to running a Chrysler or a Ford. The engine lived, and it was surprising that it could not compete in TF. But many racers sure took note that building a Chevy was a far cheaper and easier way to enter fuel Funny Car racing. The party ended early in the '69 season as after the Winter meets, the Chevys were hard-pressed just to qualify at most big events, on a local level that still fared well until '70. Huston Platt was always a Chevy supporter even when they were not competitive. He never gave up, and in '68, he reaped the rewards as his Camaro ran really well. Platt took a big win over a sixteen-car field on February 18 at the second annual East Coast Funny Car Championships at Orlando, Florida. He ran an easy first-round 9.48/150 over Tom Smith's unblown 'Cuda. In the second round, an 8.29/177.86 beat Pete Gates'8.91/159. In the semifinal, an 8.27/175.51 beat Frank Federici. He set both Low ET and Top Speed in the final with an 8.25/179.28, beating Kelly Chadwick's 8.60/163. Early in April, he was at Southeastern Dragway for a four-car show. In his first race, he defeated Arnie Beswick's GTO. He lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson in the second race, and in the third race, both he and Dick Bourgeois crossed the centerline and almost collided. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the All-American Funny Car Championships. His 8.14/182 won when Della Woods shut down early in the opening round. In the second round, his 8.25/183.28 fell to Don Biggers' 8.01/189.

Notes: Dick had his new Camaro at OCIR for a best of three match raced against Fred Goeske in February. In their first race, Harrell fouled and slowed to a 9.13 loss. He came back to win the second race to even the match. But in the third race, he was slightly late off the line, and his 8.14/174.75 lost to Goeske's 8.17/171. He lost to Al Vanderwoulde in a match race at Kansas City on April 7. He went to OCIR on May 4 for the Funny Car Team Championships. He won his first-round race with an 8.17 but lost soon after and didn't reach the final. Vanderwoulde and Harrell had a rematch at Minneapolis a month later (May 12) that had Harrell come out on top. Both Al and Dick pulled wheelstands in their opening race, but Harrell won with a 9.37/170.13 to Vanderwoulde's 9.48. Harrell made two straight with his track record 8.01 at 184.04 over Al's 8.39/179. Dick set both ends of the track record at Detroit Dragway while winning the AHRA Grandnationals later in May. His final round 7.84/184.04 beat Dick Loehr's 8.16/160. He ended the month at Green Valley Raceway for an eight-car show. In the opening round, his 7.99/178.92 beat Don Biggers. His 8.02/170.13 defeated Ron Leslie in the "High Country Cougar in the semifinal." He faced Larry Reyes, driving the "Super 'Cuda" in the final. The two had a great race, but Larry's 7.93/177 got the victory over Harrell's 8.03/182.54 (Top Speed) runner-up effort. Shortly after that (June 2), he was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, for a six-car show. All the cars were to make three runs. His 8.25/178 beat Ron O'Donnell's 8.25/173 in the "Mr. Norm" Charger in his first race. He ran his best time of the day, a 7.91/180, in winning his second-round match against Arnie Beswick. His only loss came in the third race, where Dick's 8.20/173 lost to "Dyno Don" Nicholson's 7.76/180. Harrell ran 7.79/184.04 at Bristol, but on July 10 at Atco, he set both ends of the track record with 7.68/188.68. Also ran 7.68 at Detroit. Flip-top Camaro. Photo at New York International Speedway.

Notes: Mike debuted the Camaro at Oklahoma City Raceway in April. He was supposed to run against John Wiebe's Top Fuel car with a one-second handicap, but the cars were only allowed solo passes due to high winds. Burkhart ran a best of 8.37/184.00. Mike was at Green Valley Raceway in June for an eight-car show. He made an easy solo in the first round of the competition when Al Vanderwoude failed to fire, and in the semifinals, his 8.05/166.66 advanced when Charlie Therwhanger fouled. The final was supposed to be between him and Gene Snow, but rain canceled it. He was back at Green Valley on August 7 for an eight-car show. Mike set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, where he ran 7.89/189.92 to beat the "Bear-A-Cuda." But in the semifinal, the Camaro got out of shape, and Burkhart shut off against eventual winner Ronnie Runyan. On September 8, he was at Bristol for the AHRA All-American Funny Car Championships. This was a sixteen-car field, and in round one, his 7.86/175 defeated Bob Fulp's 8.36/175 in the "Limefire." He was late off the line in the second round, and his 8.06/180.36 lost to Runyan's 8.25/169. Confirmed 7.86 at 180.36 at 1968 Bristol All American Funny Car Championships and 7.81 Irwindale. Had real doors. Ran as an alternate at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. We need to confirm aspiration, fuel, and class. Edit these fields if necessary when we get confirmation.

Notes: Ed's Cougar didn't enjoy nearly as much success as his earlier flip-top Comets. He debuted the Cougar on June 9 at a match race against "Jungle Jim" at Cayuga. He made a first-ever warm-up pass of 8.89/160. In the best-of-three match against Jim, he won two straight. In the first race, he ran an 8.17/182 over Liberman, who blew his engine on an 8.25/170 run. Jim could not run after that, so Ed soloed with an 8.20 for the match race win. On June 30, he won a four-car show at Grand Bend Dragway in Ontario. In his first race, he ran an 8.14/169.49 over Bob Smith in Tom Sturm's Corvair. In his second race, he beat Arnie Beswick with an 8.39/164.83. In the final, he met with Gary Dyer in the "Mr. Norm" Charger. Unfortunately for Dyer, he fouled away Low ET 7.98 at a track record speed of 186.72 while Schartman motored to the victory. He was runner-up at the Super Stock Nationals on Sunday, July 21. He lost a blower in the final against Larry Reyes. On July 30, he ran at an eight-car show at US 30 in Gary, Indiana. A first-round 7.84/180 beat alternate Al Fontanini's 8.01/176. But in the semifinals, his 7.92/160 lost to the eventual winner Dick Loehr's 7.77/185. On September 22, Ed raced Liberman in another best-of-three match race. This time it was held at Maple Grove. He ran a 7.95/177 in a losing effort in the first race to Jim's 7.72/184. He won the second race when Jim fouled away another 7.72 at a track record 185.92. Ed beat the Nova in the third race to continue the hex he held in match race competition against Liberman. At Irwindale's Grand Prix, Ed won his first-round race over Lew Arrington with an 8.01/178.12. In the semifinal, he ran a strong 7.85/187.10 but lost to Ron Leslie's 7.80/193. Schartman was at OCIR on October 26 for an eight-car show. He beat Tommy Grove's Mustang in the first round with a 7.81/183.28. In the second round, he ran a 7.77/179.64 over Fred Goeske. In the final, he ran up against Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's new 'Cuda. Rich ran his best time (to this point), a 7.65 (Low ET) at 191.88, to take the win and give Eddie a runner-up finish. The next day (October 27), he was in Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine's East-West Championships. It was a sixteen-car show, and Ed qualified #13 with a slow 9.25. In the first round, he lost to Goeske's 8.31/179 when the Cougar's transmission let go, slowing Ed to an 8.94/150.57. He took another first-round loss at Irwindale's East-West Meet on November 2. He ran a 7.93 that lost to Arrington's holeshot aided 7.97 in the "Brutus" Firebird. On November 16, Irwindale staged a Ford vs. Mopar Funny Car show. Four Mopars battled against four Ford FCs. Ed won his first race with an 8.04/175.43 over Dave Beebe in the "Super Chief" at 8.82/186. He lost his second race despite running a quicker 7.81/184.04 that lost to Charlie Allen's 7.88/186. In his third race, the SOHC motor was hurting, as Ed's losing 8.79/109.79 attests. Goeske beat him with an 8.01/183. Ed also ran at the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet on December 1. He ran a best of 7.89/186.32 to beat Goeske. That pretty much sums up his Cougar's '68 season.

Notes: Former Clare Sanders Lime Fire. Bob was at Bear Creek, Pa., for a best-of-three-match race against Mel Perry on August 11. In their first race, the Camaro's 7.98/168 beat the "Cuda's close 8.01/176.89. The "Limefire" broke on the line in the second race, and Perry ran 7.77/180 to win the match race. Notes: This restyled-for-'68 Skylark replaced the previous '66 iteration. It remained early hemi powered. Pellegrini later recounted that the Romeo Palamides-built chassis was not a successful idea. The upper and lower rails were intentionally not welded together to allow for more chassis flex. The flex made it difficult to steer and Pellegrini ended up barrel-rolling it at 175 mph at Rockford (now Byron) Dragway shortly after its debut. According to Pellegrini, he decided at that point he was a car owner, but no longer a driver. - RT

Notes: Blown 400" early hemi, TorqueFlite combo in 110" owner-built tube frame. Stock wheelbase and lack of signage made for a very stock-appearing (and reportedly sanitary-appearing) race car. Rollout garnered feature treatment in mid-67 issues of Drag Strip and SS&DI magazines, but the car was not frequently seen at the head of the pack. Sanders went on to pilot the #2 Jungle Jim car in 1969. - RT | Jim St. Clair and Jack Green owned Boss Bite, Inc. Confirmed 8.36 at 175.78 at 1968 All-American Funny Car Championships at Bristol. The car was billed as the "Worlds Most Beautiful Funny Car." - Danny White | Sanders drove the car at the Irwindale's New Year's Day meet, where he qualified fifth with an 8.25 but failed to advance to the final of the sixteen-car field. On January 14, he qualified last with an 8.29/174.75 at an eight-car show at OCIR and ran 8.19/170.13 over Ronnie Runyan's 8.34/171 in the first round. He soloed in the semi's when Terry Hedrick was shut-off on the line with a fuel leak. In the final, his 7.71/187.91 Low ET and Top Speed run fell to Jim Liberman's 7.86/183. Another runner-up finish came on January 21 at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline when he blew his engine in the final against Eddie Schartman. At Lions on February 24 at a sixteen-car show, an 8.55 was only good for the third alternate. The following day on February 25, at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships, Sanders first-round 8.31/173.07 beat Rich Hammons 8.58/165 in Samson. In the second round, he smoked the tires and ran a losing 8.68/174.40 against Dick Loehr's 8.14/169. Back at Irwindale on March 3, an 8.19/175.43 qualified Clare sixth in a sixteen-car field, but a first-round 7.97/186 pass from Lew Arrington trailed Limefire's 8.24/176.81. In June at Aquasco for the third annual Funny Car Invitational, Sanders ran a first-round 8.31/154 over Malcolm Durham, but the event was then rained out after just the first-round was run. In September, he started driving Liberman's second car.

Notes: Flip roof, removable front. In April, Al was at Cecil County for a best of three match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. The Charger was newly equipped with a supercharger after running injected early in the season. Graeber lost all three races and the match, but his times were good. He ran 8.38/175.09 that lost to Liberman's 8.38/151. In the second race, his 8.49/175.09 lost to JJ's 8.21/143, and a final 8.39/175.43 lost to Jim's 8.07/176. The track record was 8.03 by Don Nicholson. Graeber was at Cecil County for the CARS All-Star Championships. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.72/180 advanced over a fouling Arnie Beswick. In the second round, he ran 8.11/177.86 to beat Tony Wahlay, but in the semifinal, eventual winner Dick Loehr's 7.87/182 beat Al's 8.33/175.09.

Notes: Roger Lindamood raced funny cars from the very beginning. He won Super Stock at the US Nationals at Indy, but he went the funny car route like other racers. Roger's Charger relied on the same chassis from '67 to '68 but obviously went from injectors to blowers. I know that Lindamood experimented with having the injector hat reversed. It was a failed experiment in air turbulence, I guess. Low 8s and high 7s were the norm. By 1968, Lindamood was racing the beautiful full-size "Color Me Gone" 1968 Charger. Logghe Stamping Company built the Charger, and Al Bergler did the tin for the massive body. The paint featured layers of pearl white and a wild rainbow paint scheme on top. A 426 Chrysler Hemi backed by a TorqueFlite transmission powered the behemoth. Lindamood ran a 7.73 at 193.12 with the full-size Charger in 1968. He raced at OCIR Mfg. Championships 1968. (Stats courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Info from Bill Duke and James Ibusuki) | Lindamood started the season at the New Year's Day race at Irwindale, where he qualified on the bump for the 16-car field with an 8.52, but he lost early. On January 28 at Lions for the AHRA Winternationals Funny Car race, he qualified #6 out of a field of 32 with an 8.20/180.00 and ran a first-round 7.97/180 before losing in the second. He then went to Pomona, where he qualified for Super eliminator(there was no Funny Car class), but he had problems with the car and could not compete. At Carlsbad on February 25 for the South Coast Funny Car Championships, he went all the way to the finals with an 8.34/180 best before fouling against Jim Liberman. He lost to Tom Grove's 7.79 in the first round at the Cecil County Fuel Showdown on May 18, running an 8.10/179.64 in the loss. On July 4, Roger set a Union Grove speed record of 190.46. He was at Gary, Indiana, on July 30 for an eight-car show. He needed only a 11.97 to advance in round one when his competition fouled. In the semifinals, his 8.05/186.26 lost to Don Schumacher's 7.70. Roger was at Norwood, MA, on August 11 for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. It was a 1/8 mile track, and in their first race, Lawton's 5.31/145 beat Lindamood's 5.37/152. Both ran 5.01 in the second race, with the Charger picking up the track speed record with its 155.17 top end that managed to cross the stripe before the Mustang. Roger wrapped up the match by winning the final race with a 5.14/153 that covered Lawton's 5.32/142. On September 1 at Minnesota for their 8-car Funny Car meet, Roger ran a first-round 7.86/193.12 (track speed record) that beat Don Schumacher's (8.19/181.08) Charger. But he fouled away a 7.80/191.88 against Grove (7.72/191.48) in the semis. On September 14, Roger faced off against Pat Minick in a best two out of three match race at Hollywood, Florida. Roger lost the first race with an ill-handling 10.20-83.72 to Minick's shut off 9.81/95. Pat took the match in the second race with an 8.25/177, beating Roger's 8.44/189.46. Lindamood ran a 7.92/191.48 solo in the third race when Minick's "Chi-Town Hustler" broke. Another best of three match was run on September 29 at Windsor Dragway, where Terry Hedrick was in the "Seaton's Shaker" Rat-powered Corvair. Roger had a bad day, losing all three races and only running a best of 8.05/189.46. At the OCIR manufacturer's race, Roger won all three races with a best of 7.96/189.46. Shortly after that, he had a bad day racing at Columbia, South Carolina. The windshield blew out of the car at speed. Because he ran the car with windows, the air pressure caused the body to explode. The front end had also collapsed. Roger was hit by some debris that had struck him in the chest and knocked him unconscious. Other than some cracked ribs, he was ok. He needed a new Charger body for his race commitments. - Ron Howard

Notes: Ed started the '68 season with a win at the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline on January 21. A final round Low ET of the meet 8.43 beat a motor blowing Clare Sanders. The following week, on January 28, Schartman ran 8.27/177.28 to qualify eighth in the 32-car field at Lions for the AHRA Winter meet. A first-round 7.92 beat the Vicious Vette and a second round 8.11 beat a wheelstanding Ray Alley. He blew a transmission in the third round and lost to Gene Snow. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. NHRA had no Funny Car class, so he ran in Super Eliminator. Ed had a really good, close first-round race against Willie Borsch's AA/FA. The Comet's 7.95/182.18 barely beat Willie's 7.52/202. A second round 8.10/182.92 lost to Richard Galli's A/FD. In March, he finished runner-up to Don Nicholson at the Stardust National Open. Both he and Nicholson ran sevens in the final, but Don's Low ET of 7.83 beat his 7.99. He ran a match race against Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda on March 3 at Lakeland and in the first round, Reyes' 8.22 beat his 8.31. The second race had Reyes' win again with an 8.27 beating Eddie's 8.33. He won the last race with an 8.35, but lost the match race. In May, Pittsburgh held its Funny Car Championships and Ed made it into the semis before losing to Terry Hedrick. On May 10, at Union Grove's Night Funny Car Championships, Eddie won, running a final round 7.86/180 for the title. In June, he was still running the Comet when he ran a match race against Larry Reyes in the Super Cuda at Milan, Mich. Reyes won the first race with an 8.92/181 when Schartman lost a transmission and slowed to an 8.49/171. The second race saw Eddie win, turning a 7.81/181.50 over Larry's 7.99/179. In the final deciding race, Ed won with a 7.73 track record at 184.48 over the Super Cuda's 7.87/189. - Ron Howard | Super Stock & Drag Illustrated 9/68 cover car, 3-page feature. 120" Logghe chassis, 427 Cammer, C-6 auto trans. Notes: Frank was at OCIR on May 18 for a Funny Car vs. Fuel Altered race. All cars were to run three races. In his first race, he was up against Willie Borsch. Pisano got a great jump on the lights and held it to win with his first "seven," a 7.93/182.92 that beat Willie's quicker and faster 7.85/189. In his second race, he got another holeshot win when Gary Reed's late 8.09/193 lost to Frank's 8.25/177.86. In his third race, an 8.29/171.00 beat Leon Fitzgerald's troubled 9.32/117. There were two Pisano Bros. Corvairs, one with doors and one without doors.

Notes: On August 11, Wahlay faced off against Dave Pinta in the Stone, Woods & Cook Mustang for a best of three match at Epping, New England. Early in September, he was at Aquasco for its Funny Car extravaganza event. It was an eight-car show, and Wahlay warmed up by running 8.36/170.45 and 8.74/166.05. In the first round, he got crossed up and shut off to a 9.75/110.29 loss to George Reese's 8.35/175. Tony was at Lions for an eight-car show on November 30. Notes: AKA Super Hugger. Mel was at Capitol Raceway on August 16 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. His 7.93/184.80 advanced over a transmission-blowing Ron O'Donnell in the "Chapman" Camaro in the opening round of eliminations. In round two, he soloed with a 10.44/94.73 when Dick Harrell lost his brakes and could not stage. But in the semifinals, his 8.04/181.80 lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson's 7.90/182. Mel was at Bear Creek, Pa. for a best of three match race against Bob Fulp in the "Limefire" 'Cuda. In their first race, Perry's 7.98/168 beat Bob's 8.01/176. The 'Cuda broke on the line in the second race, and Mel won the match with a 7.77/180.11.

Notes: Don was still running his '67 car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Since NHRA had no Funny Car class, he had to run in Super Eliminator. Of the Funny Cars that showed up and qualified for the class, Gay did the best. He beat the Joe Davis AA/Altered in the opening round with an 8.18/181.80 and in round two, Sush Matsubara failed to fire, so an 8.37/161.57 advanced. In the semifinals, his 8.35/182.18 was stopped by Richard Galli's A/FD.
