Notes: Gary qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.337/276.49. Unfortunately, the car broke in the first round against eventual winner K.C. Spurlock. He went to Arizona for the NHRA Quality Care Nationals but was the second alternate with a 5.704/253.02 best. He qualified #10 at Houston Spring at 5.286/279.24 and went to the semifinals. Gary qualified #15 at the Gators at 5.322/272.47 but lost to John Force in round one. He qualified #14 at Atlanta at 5.361/252.31 and went two rounds. Gary qualified #11 at Atlanta at 5.360/280.46 and improved to 5.344/280.11 in a round one win over Gary Bolger. He beat Jim Epler in round two with a 5.472/274.72 before losing round three to Gordie Bonin. Gary qualified #12 at the Mopar Parts Nationals at 5.328 but lost in round one. He also qualified #12 at Columbus (5.366/274.72) and lost in round one, again. He ran 5.374/272.14 in qualifying #11 at Topeka but lost to Kenji Okazaki in round one. Gary also had similar results at Bandimere (5.749/246.44) and Sonoma (5.359/270.59). He ran 5.285/272.97 to qualify #14 at Seattle, but his round one losses continued. But Gary went all the way to the finals at Brainerd in August, losing to John Force there with best times of 5.335/277.94. He was a disappointing DNQ at Indy (5.641/207.37) but ran 5.317/275.31 at Maple Grove to qualify #9. Gary Bolger got a measure of revenge with a first-round win. He went 5.270/283.01 (#10) at Topeka Fall but did not get past round one again. The same thing happened at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals, although Gary went 5.258 to qualify. He also made the field at the World Finals with a 5.281/282.48 but fell in round one, again. All year, it was a gutsy performance as the independent mixed it up with the big boys. |

Notes: After ending the '93 season with a blower explosion that wrecked his Cutlass body at the NHRA World Finals, Caminito hoped for better luck in '94. The season didn't start so well. Jerry attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.55/254.38 was good for the third alternate. He made the field at the NHRA Quality Care Nationals in Arizona, where his 5.36/272.06 qualified #14. Jerry improved to a 5.343/282.92 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat K.C. Spurlock's 5.30/285. He then went to Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals and failed to qualify. That also happened at the Gatornationals, where his best of 5.61/198.76 was good for the fourth alternate. Things were bad; Jerry was out of money and even had to borrow money for his mortgage. He parked his Funny Car. But he decided to go to Atlanta for the Southern Nationals. He ran 5.39 on his first qualifying attempt, came back out Saturday, and ran 5.35/274.80 to qualify #13. Unfortunately, on that run, he lost a clutch. He borrowed parts from other racers and pieced the clutch back together for eliminations. Chuck Etchells smoked the tires in the first round, and Jerry's 5.38/258.84 advanced. In round two, he got out on Jim Epler and led almost all the way. He didn't see Epler, so he clicked it off early (5.56/211.16) for fear of losing the clutch again. Jim roared past just before the finish line to win with a 5.49/263. Caminito earned $8,000 for his efforts. But things would get a lot worse. He went to Memphis in May for the Mid-South Nationals. Jerry ran 5.40/279.76 in qualifying, which was good enough for the #13 spot in the field. He came back out for another pass and lost control of the car. He crashed head-on into the guardrail at 275 mph. Caminito was seriously injured. He had a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and a fractured leg. 1986 McKinney chassis. |

Notes: Ronny ran four NHRA national events this year. He was the fourth alternate at Memphis at 6.987/142.11. Young qualified on the "bump" for the NHRA Western Auto Nationals at 5.615/264.62. In round one, he lost to number one qualifier John Force, 5.07/291 to 5.695/193.88. It was deja vu at the Heartland Nationals, where he again qualified on the bump with a 5.380/266.58. In the first round, he slowed to 5.561/211.91 in a loss to low qualifier Force's 4.95/297. Ronny attempted to qualify at the NHRA Chief Nationals in October, but his 5.408/247.38 best was good for the second alternate. |

Notes: Wyatt attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but his best of 5.689/233.22 was good for the fifth alternate. Wyatt qualified #15 at the World Finals at 5.399/255.97 but did not race in the first round. We need to confirm the World Finals appearance was in this car. | Car was well-worn by this time. Notes: As a result of a horrific fire at the '94 US Nats, the Research Labs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio conducted tests on fire-Extinguishing with assitance from Firefox Industries. Rick Howard took both photos, one of the car after the fire at Indy and the one for the brochure used by the Air Vehicle Structures Lab at WPAFB. Rick was Senior Safety Specialist during the tests and was required to monitor all tests. Test car was a Ford Probe built by Murf McKinney. |

Notes: The team made some stout passes this year in NHRA competition. Qualified #14 at Bandimere at 5.827/250.97, but lost to Al Hofmann in round one, with an 11-second shut off. The team qualified #16 at Brainerd with a 5.560/265.40 for their best ever speed, but an off pace 8-second run lost to John Force in round one. Notes: Ray Higley was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.663/250.48 ended up as the fourth alternate for the show. He was the fourth alternate at Houston as well, running 5.807/261.02. Ray was the second alternate at Memphis at 5.900/254.09, but he got into the show. He dropped a 5.36 to 5.801/256.82 decision to Cruz Pedregon in round one. Ray was the first alternate at Englishtown at 5.808/222.18, but he got into the show as an alternate again. He broke in the first round, against Al Hofmann. Ray qualified #15 at Columbus with a solid 5.559/268.89. Unfortunately, it was he who could not make the call in round one, and Rick Sherrell took his place. Ray was the third alternate at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 5.520/266.35 best. He was also the third alternate at NHRA Ennis with a 5.579 at only 198 mph. And then, you guessed it, the third alternate at the World Finals at 5.765/189. |

Notes: Rick attempted to qualify at several NHRA national events this year with marginal success. He ran 14.104/52.94 at the Pomona Winters, 6.378/166.35 at Phoenix, 15.931/45.16 at Houston, 6.397/214.59 at Memphis, 6.041/238.72 at Englishtown, and 8.389/83.99 at Columbus. All his efforts were within the top five DNQs, but at Columbus, it paid off. He got into the show and nearly upset Richard Hartman in round one, 6.44/196 to 6.483/186.45. An 8.290/112.61 was the third alternate at Topeka, and a 9.888/82.41 missed at Brainerd. Rick attempted to qualify for the NHRA Chief National,s but he had trouble. The best run he made was 7.481/113.35 which was a long way off the 5.26 "bump". He then went to Pomona for the NHRA World Finals where he ran even worse. A 9.682/67.72 was his best there. |

Notes: Ran two NHRA national events in 1994. Ricky did not qualify for either. Ran 6.579/214.59 second alternate DNQ at Autolite Nationals on 7/30/94. Got in as an alternate and broke against John Force in round one. He ran 6.705/221.02 for the fourth alternate at the World Finals on 10/29/94. |

Notes: First funny car in the fours. First member of the Castrol 4-Second Club for Funny Cars on October 1/1993, with a 4.987 at the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals in Topeka, Kan. Terrible & terrific year in 1993: crew chief Yingst died during NHRA Slick 50 Nats in Spring, rebounded to make historic pass in Fall. Photo from Columbus 1993. | Chuck started the year at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #3 with a 5.14/285.44, but in round one, he smoked the tires and lost to Del Worsham. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, his 5.41/265.01 qualified #10. He improved to 5.22/272.39 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Al Hofmann's 5.15/287. Houston was the next stop on the NHRA schedule for the Slick 50 Nationals. Etchells qualified #5 with a 5.16/270.59 and in round one, his 5.14/286.35 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.46/275. In the second round, both he and Cruz Pedregon ran 5.22 (Chuck at 276.83), but Cruz crossed the finish line first. Gainesville was the next stop for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, Chuck ran 5.30/277.86 to qualify #8. His 5.21/274.30 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.28/281 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, but he broke against Hofmann in round two. He went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational and qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 5.27/266.03. But in the first round, while faced Bonin, Chuck did his burnout and then was unable to back up after his reverser failed. After having such a rough time in the first few events, things went a little more his way at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.09 at 291.07. In the first round Caminito fouled against him and Etchells advanced with a 6.05/167.09. Round two saw Whit Bazemore fail to show and Chuck soloed to a 5.26/271.41. In the semifinals, he and his opponent, Freddie Neely smoked the tires with Chuck recovering first with a 5.49/265.95 over Freddie's 5.69/262. This put him into the final against Force. Unfortunately, John got the victory. The sixth NHRA race of the season was the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis. Etchells qualified #4 for the show with a 5.29/277.60. An easy 5.66/207.75 in round one, beat Brent Fanning, but in round two he lost a close race to Bonin. Gordie's 5.26/285 nipped his 5.27/274.97. At the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown, Chuck qualified #2 with a 5.04/288.46 just behind Force's 5.01/289. Etchells beat Caminito in round one, with a 5.18/281.69 while in round two his 5.22/279.32 took out Kenji Okazaki. A semifinal 5.27/265.17 topped Tom Hoover's close 5.30/283 and moved him into the final against Force. Once again, John stopped him in the final. Force won with a 5.14/290 while Etchells was busy smoking his tires to an 8.01/104.69 for the runner-up spot. On May 28 these two faced off in a best of three match race at the 1/8 mile Lancaster track. Things didn't go well for Etchells as he lost two straight with times of 4.13/170 and 3.92/178 while Force ran a best of 3.73. Repeated his 299.50 from Topeka at when he set Top Speed at Ennis Fall 1993. |
